This experience goes beyond traditional elephant riding and instead focuses on meaningful interactions.

Your day begins with a private tour guide meeting you at your hotel around 8:00 am. From there, you'll embark on a journey to the park, which takes approximately one and a half hours. Upon arrival, you'll change into provided uniforms and participate in an informative introductory discussion before engaging in the activities.

Interact with the elephants in a respectful manner, feed them, walk alongside them, embrace their gentle presence, and even have the chance to bathe these remarkable beings. After an enriching morning, savor a delicious lunch at the park. Your private guide and driver will then transport you back to your hotel around 2:00 pm.

Cooking Classes Experience: Embark on a culinary adventure in the serene countryside, just 9 kilometers (6 miles) east of Chiang Mai, at the Baan Hong Nual School. Thai cuisine's subtle flavors and unique presentation have gained worldwide acclaim. In this immersive program, you'll uncover the secrets of Thai cooking and master the art of crafting traditional Thai dishes.

The four-dish course encompasses a delightful selection of soups, salads, curries, satay, and desserts. You'll learn the techniques of stir-frying, steaming, and the art of serving food the Thai way. These newfound culinary skills will leave you well-prepared to impress your loved ones upon your return.

Evening at Doi Suthep: Chiang Mai's Sacred Sanctuary. Just a short drive from Chiang Mai, Doi Suthep is a captivating national park in northern Thailand. Here, nature's beauty shines with lush landscapes, serene waterfalls, and panoramic vistas. The park also houses the renowned Wat Phra That Doi Suthep temple, a spiritual gem constructed in 1382.

Doi Suthep beckons outdoor enthusiasts with activities like hiking and cycling. From the temple's hilltop perch, you'll enjoy sweeping views of Chiang Mai, particularly enchanting at twilight. Wat Phra That Doi Suthep holds deep significance in Buddhism, attracting Thai pilgrims, especially during Makha Bucha and Visakha Bucha (in February and May).

Our tour offers an exclusive experience, taking place in the tranquil late afternoon when crowds thin out. You'll have the privilege of exploring Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, where resident monks' soothing chants accompany the glittering lights of Chiang Mai below. Meditation at the temple is also an option for those seeking a deeper connection. This evening excursion promises spiritual enrichment amidst northern Thailand's cultural treasures.

Doi Inthanon National Park: Nature, Culture, and Adventure. Explore Doi Inthanon National Park's natural and cultural wonders as you journey through stunning landscapes. Visit pagodas dedicated to the King and Queen with breathtaking mountain views. Immerse yourself in a Karen hill tribe village and explore the Hill Tribe Market.

Experience adventure on the Kiew Mae Pan Nature Trail, a 3-kilometer trek through lush forests with stunning Rhododendrons, waterfalls, and streams. Enjoy mountain panoramas at the trail's end.

For a unique perspective, take the Mae Klang Luang Nature Trail downhill, passing the Pa Dok Siew Waterfall. Explore the Mae Klang Luang Karen village with coffee bushes and rice paddies. Don't miss trying freshly roasted coffee at a local coffee house. This day offers nature, culture, and adventure in Doi Inthanon National Park.

Our first stop is Wat Tham Sua (Tiger Cave Temple), one of Krabi's most stunning temples. Explore its limestone caves with mesmerizing stalagmites and stalactites. The temple's surroundings are graced with lush trees and a golden pagoda atop a mountain, reached by climbing over 1,000 steps.

Next, we'll visit the Hot Spring, where you can experience natural relaxation by immersing yourself in the warm stream. These hot springs are renowned for their high temperature (38-42°C) and mineral-rich waters, perfect for a soothing hydrotherapy bath.

Our final destination is the enchanting Emerald Lagoon. Nestled in a shaded, forested area, the lagoon's water changes color throughout the day. Dive into the crystal-clear, green waters of this 1.2-meter deep lagoon for a refreshing swim.

Alas Kedaton Monkey Forest: Begin your adventure in the famed Alas Kedaton, home to Bali's cheekiest inhabitants - the macaque monkeys. Wander among towering nutmeg trees, sacred to the Balinese people, and get up close and personal with these playful creatures. A visit to Bali is incomplete without witnessing their antics.

Pura Taman Ayung (Royal Temple): Our next stop takes us to Mengwi, where you'll explore the majestic Pura Taman Ayung, a 17th-century Royal Temple. Admire its architectural splendor and soak in the serene atmosphere of one of Bali's most beautiful temples.

Tanah Lot Temple at Sunset: As the day draws to a close, we'll take you to the iconic Tanah Lot Temple, perched dramatically on a rock just off the shore. This temple is not only a marvel of Balinese architecture but also a photographer's dream, especially during sunset when the surroundings take on a surreal glow. Textexaam.

Kelingking Beach: Our adventure kicks off at Kelingking Beach, one of Indonesia's most captivating natural wonders. Despite its name translating to "pinkie finger," this renowned viewpoint is famous for its uncanny resemblance to a Tyrannosaurus Rex. Stand atop steep cliffs and gaze at the imposing rock formation, which extends into the ocean, cradling a pristine white sand beach.

Broken Beach: Our next stop is Broken Beach, locally known as Pantai Pasih Uug. This unique destination boasts a naturally formed lagoon—a circular hole nestled within rocky cliffs, seemingly enclosed from all sides. Enjoy a refreshing coconut drink from a nearby stall and marvel at this natural spectacle as clear waters flow in from the surrounding ocean.

Angel's Billabong: From the towering heights of Broken Beach and Kelingking Beach, venture closer to the water at Angel's Billabong. This natural "infinity pool" is a serene lagoon framed by rugged volcanic rocks. The crystal-clear water allows you to observe intricate rock formations on the pool's floor.

Crystal Bay Beach: After an exploration-filled morning, savor lunch at a local restaurant before making your way to Crystal Bay Beach. Dive into the tranquil and pristine waters of this picturesque beach, teeming with exotic marine life. A thriving coral reef awaits not far from the shore, making it the perfect spot to rent snorkeling gear and explore underwater wonders. Whether you're swimming, diving, or simply relaxing under the shade of a swaying coconut tree, you'll find plenty of friendly "warungs" (local shops and eateries) offering snacks and cold drinks.

Jessie was amazing ! Everything from her level of English to her understanding of what we valued .

We had a good time exploring the city with Selinda!

Our guide lele is a wealth of information, Lele is very professional and very attentive to our needs. Lele is amazing. Lele got everything spot on. It probably helps that Guilin is a brilliant place to visit so Lele has great material to work with but that doesn't take anything away from how much Lele helped make it a great trip.

Our guide for Beijing was super knowledgeable and experienced and able to help us to achieve as much as we wanted within the time given. We had a fun time guided by him as he is also super humorous and you can see how he interacts with the vendors and people whom he comes by. Thank you for a very enjoyable time in Beijing and accommodating to all our needs!

Our China Highlight guide. Michael, was attentive, thoughtful and knowledgeable. He narrated many interesting historical events about Chengdu while touring around the city and having afternoon tea with us. He was thoughtful to provide us with snacks during long hikes at Leshan or walks around the city.

She was very flexible and added extra time when we needed it and we felt extremely well taken care of. She also chose the best restaurants for us,

Our tour guide Helen, was excellent, she was very kind, professional and passionate for her work and she also loves Pandas! She will take you to take the best panda photos and to know more about Chengdu city. Our tour was great, she took us to all our destinations always with the best spots: Temples, pagodas, famous streets, theaters, pandas...you name it! Everything was great.

He picked up our pre-booked boat/other excursions tickets so we were able to avoid all the long lines and chaos. He is knowledgeable of the places we visited, courteous, fun to travel with and well-versed in Chinese classics.

Tom is the guide that will take you to where no other guide will. We pushed for the experience and Tom and the team delivered more than what we could have ever asked for. His English speaking ability and his Chinese history knowledge is second to none.

Amazing Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam 18 days

This is Lillian, Robert’s wife, who also went on the tour. The guides were exceptional in Bangkok and Siem Reap. They should be used every time. The tours were interesting and educational. The vehicles were clean and with a lot of space. We definitely visited the best of what these countries have to offer. My only suggestion would be to include Danang with the Ba Na Hills cable car ride to see The Golden Bridge. We did that on our own before going to our second night in Hoi An. It is worth seeing plus the dragon bridge at night in Danang. We stayed at the Vanda Hotel in Danang and walked to the Dragon Bridge which was around the corner. I want to thank you for providing a wonderful and beautiful tour. Bravo Indochina tours did a great job. Lillian Loewen

Discover Indochina: 10-Day Private Expedition (Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand)

Amazing 14 days tour of Vietnam. We recently were fortunate enough to do Vietnam for 14 days with Vietnam Tour Fun company. From initial inquiries to the completion of the tour, everything went so smoothly. All queries were responded quickly and efficiently by email before we left, and once we were there, we were impressed with how smoothly everything went. All transfers and tours were organized, and we were very happy with the tour guides and drivers, all hotels were excellent. The beautiful scenery of the mountains in Vietnam impressed us a lot. We even received an upgrade in Hoi An as our original accommodation was under maintenance.

Thailand + Vietnam Intro Tour

Thailand + Vietnam Intro

The Intro 18 day thailand tour was an insane experience! My favourite places have to be Koa Sok for the amazing scenery and phi phi island! Would not change anything about the itinerary and managed to fit so much in! This was followed by the 12 day Vietnam Intro tour which was incredible! We saw the most incredible sunset in Ha Long Bay whilst on a beautiful boat cruise. Hoi An was my favourite place on the trip with the city full of energy! Crab fishing and the cooking class were my favourite activities! A very well planned trip. Our group leaders looked after everyone and made sure everything was so well organised :)

What people love about Thailand And Vietnam Tours

We did our tour with Bravo Indochina Tour. The tour was excellent arranged which met with our expectations. Our tour guide and driver were great knowledge and helpful. We felt so comfort with the services provided and arranged! We would highly recommend this tour!
The itinerary was interesting, hotels adequate and in most cases clean. Train ride was tiresome but we put it as life experience. Our CEO, Sita, was very enthusiastic and helpful. We had a great group of mostly older travelers so our needs were similar. We really enjoyed Halong Bay stay. The only change we would suggest was not getting up in the middle of the night to be at Angkor Wat so early. We waited for almost two hours in darkness waiting for sunrise and it wasn't worth it. We were so tired afterwards that we could not really enjoy visiting Angkor Wat temples. The local guides in Vietnam were very hard to understand (maybe find better ones?), so we've missed on some info. Cambodian guides were much better.
The communication and respect provided by Legend Tours was exceptional. I ask a lot of questions. I received timely responses every time. I made changes 3 times to my itinerary and each time was seamless, and without judgement. Eventually, I had to switch companies due to adding another country Legend doesn’t cover. Again, I was treated with the utmost respect. I plan to to use Legend Tour in the future because of the stellar customer service!

Thailand & Bali Trip: The Ultimate 7-Day Bali And Thailand Itinerary

  • SHERI-KAE MCLEOD
  • January 27, 2023
  • Bali , GUIDES AND ITINERARIES , Thailand

Making a 7-day itinerary for Thailand and Bail is certainly a daunting task. Between the two countries are world-famous tourist cities, thousands of attractions, top sights, restaurants, quirky neighborhoods, and more. Both countries are rich in culture and have so much to offer to every kind of traveller. So how do you choose so you can get the best of both countries? Much of your trip will be spent traveling from city to city so ideally, you will need to dedicate two days to each major city, visiting any three of your choice (Bangkok, Pattaya OR Phuket and Bali). That being said, we’ve compiled a detailed 7-day itinerary to see both of Thailand and Bali — two of the most stunning destinations in southeast Asia.

Bangkok (2 Days)

Bangkok is one of the most visited cities in southeast Asia for good reasons. With its many restaurants, tourists attractions, temples, and fun activities, the city serves as the cultural and tourist hub of Thailand. This is a great place to start your trip to Thailand and Bali.

Morning:  Begin your morning adventures in Bangkok by exploring the city on the Chao Phraya River. The scenic river runs through the city and is one of the cheapest and most convenient ways to see some of Bangkok’s most noteworthy attractions. The tours begin at 7 a.m. in the morning. So be sure to go early enough so you can purchase your tourist boat pass at the Sathon Bridge Pier and get a seat on the boat. Start your day early and head to BTS Skytrain stop Saphan Taksin on the Silom line. The boat passes cost ฿150 (about USD $4). Once on the boat, you’ll get to experience Bangkok’s beauty from the river. You also have the option to hop on and off the boat as you please at any one of the eight stops.

Afternoon:  One place in Bangkok where you’ll find a lot of tourists, especially on the weekend, is at the many markets in the city. Bangkok markets are known for being a one-stop-shop hub where you can get delicious food, souvenirs, clothing, handmade crafts, and much more. The most popular weekend market is the Chatuchak Weekend Market in eastern Bangkok, equipped with lots of stalls, full of everything from antiques to clothing. If you’re visiting Bangkok during the week, Pratunam Market is a great alternative.

Evening:  In the evening, catch the free shuttle to Asiatique, a large open-air mall located on the banks on Chao Phraya River. Aside from the shops and tons of Thai and international restaurants, the huge mall has plenty of other attractions like the Thai puppet show by Joe Louis Theatre and Calypso Cabaret. For some family fun, take a ride on the Asiatique sky, Bangkok’s largest Ferris wheel.

Morning:  There are plenty of parks in Bangkok to relax or simply go for a walk. The huge green spaces, with skyscrapers and luxury hotels as their backdrops, are some of the most serene areas you’ll find in a big city like Bangkok. The well-known Lumpini Park, full of those prehistoric-looking creatures, and the Benjakiti Park are the perfect places to start the day in Bangkok.

Afternoon:  The culture of Thailand is known for being rooted in spirituality and the best place to see and experience true Thai culture is at the many temples in the country. Most of the popular temples in Bangkok are located close to one another, so visitors can hop from one to the next. The must-see temples that are all found along the river are the Temple of the Reclining Buddha, Wat Phra Kaew, and Wat Arun or Temple of the Dawn.

Evening:  After a packed day of sightseeing and exploring, experience the buzzing Bangkok nightlife at Khao San Road, Bangkok’s infamous backpacker’s hub. There are plenty of bars and restaurants as well as stalls selling clothes and souvenirs here. If you want a slightly calmer experience, visit the nearby Rambuttri Village instead.

Phuket (2 Days)

Located in the Andaman Sea, Phuket is the quintessential island destination. Filled with rainforests, beaches, and fun tourist attraction, this city has so much to offer its visitors. Spend the day hopping from one attraction to the next or relaxing on the beach and soaking up some sun.

Morning:  In the morning, head to Phuket Town and spend a few hours exploring all the attractions and being mesmerized by the town’s charm. The town itself should be a tourist attraction, with its colorful streets, authentic restaurants, quirky shops, and old Sino-Portuguese buildings. In Phuket Town, you can visit the Phuket Tricky-eye Museum and Baan Teelanka (the Upside Down House) for family-friendly adventures that will keep you entertained for hours.

Afternoon:  After a morning of adventure and delicious lunch, relax with your loved ones at the Saphan Hin, a small, green space found in Phuket Town. This park is perfect for eating, exercising, or just relaxing for a few hours before taking on the busy nightlife in Phuket.

Night:  When the sun goes down, the fun on Bangla Road is just getting started. It is here you will find a plethora of go-go-bars, head throbbing nightclubs, and all the ‘sexpats’ and liquor that you can imagine. There are plenty of outdoor bars just waiting for you to pull up a stool and lose a game of Jenga to one of its bar girls. If you love going out and having an evening you will not remember, this is the stretch of road to visit.

The Free Trip Planning App for Bali!

It is a fun way to discover Bali and plan your entire trip by talking to someone who’s already been there and done that!

Morning:  The main reason why Phuket is so popular is its stunning beaches. While Patong Beach is certainly the most popular amongst foreigners, there are plenty of other sandy paradises found throughout the island. Some of the best beaches to check out on the island of Phuket include Laylan Beach, Bang Tao, Karon Beach, Surin Beach, Paradise Beach, and Kata Beach, just to name a few.

Afternoon:  After you’ve enjoyed a beautiful morning on the beach, head to the Khao Phra Thaeo National Park and explore the diversity of birds, animals, and plants. If you feel like walking, guides are available at the park to assist you through the eight-kilometer trek right through the park that leads to a stunning waterfall. There’s also a museum and an information center at the bottom of the waterfall.

Evening:  The Phuket Weekend Market is only open on weekends and well worth the visit. Here you’ll find a variety of different Thai dishes and snacks as well as an abundance of souvenirs. If you happen to be in Phuket during the week, take a stop at the Chillva Market or Phuket Indy Market for a range of cool items and food.

Pattaya (2 Days)

Multi-cultural Pattaya is a vibrant coastal city in Thailand known for its beaches, luxury resorts, and shopping malls. Along with the natural beauty of the city, the buzzing nightlife also attracts thousands of tourists who visit to experience the cabaret bars and 24-hour clubs.

Morning:  If there was ever an attraction in Pattaya to be completely fascinated by, Mini Siam is it. Mini Siam is a famous miniature park which features a small-scale replica exhibition of some of the most famous structures in the world. One can experience the Eiffel Tower, Statue of Liberty, Wat Phra Kaeo, and so much more in one area. The entrance fee is ฿300 (about USD $9) for foreigners and the property opens at 7 a.m. in the morning. Be sure to book your tour from early on because the attraction is quite popular and tours are limited.

Noon:  The young and old alike can enjoy themselves at Pattaya Park Tower. The interesting thing about this attraction is that it is an amusement park and tower view rolled into one. The 240-meter tall observation tower hosts three international restaurants, all with 360-degree views of Pattaya. There’s also a gigantic water park, a jumping platform and a fun park with a rollercoaster, monorail, musical carousel, and much more for children.

Evening:   After a day of excitement, relax with loved ones on Jomtien Beach. This six-kilometer stretch of sand is pretty peaceful in the evenings since it is not as crowded as Pattaya beach. A number of activities and watersports are available but if you’re exhausted from all the day’s activities, you can grab dinner at one of the many seafood or Thai restaurants on the beach.

Morning:  The Nong Nooch Tropical Garden & Cultural Village is a cool way to spend your morning in Pattaya. The entire area is designed like a theme park with various displays like the Stonehenge garden, the 17th-century French garden, and more. A number of orchid nurseries and tropical areas are also on display, making the park a good place to relax.

Noon:  The Four Regions Floating Market is a one-of-a-kind market in Pattaya. Traders, farmers, and fishermen in boats float along the water offering a variety of fresh produce, flowers, and handicrafts. Take a tour on a boat through the market, or stop and bargain for something, whether its food or unique crafts made by the locals.

Afternoon:   What better way to be up close and personal with the marine life in Pattaya than to visit Underwater World. This modern aquarium is home to an extensive display of tropical fish and other sea creatures. Visitors can go swimming with the sharks and stingrays here, feed the fish from bottles and watch their shows. Most activities are scheduled in advance, so check with the office before visiting.

Evening:  Walking Street is one of the most captivating features of Pattaya, known for its nightlife attractions. The street comes alive at 6 p.m. daily with a myriad of lively bars, nightclubs, restaurants, and the so-called “very friendly” girls. For cool souvenirs made by locals, check out the market or malls nearby.

Bali (2 Days)

Beautiful beaches and impetuous waves, enchanting rainforests and waterfalls, emerald rice terraces, and fascinating cultural and spiritual attractions. These and much more attract tourists from all over the world to the magical island of Bali. Two days is enough to get a taste of what makes Bali so special.

Morning:  Wake up in the morning and breathe in the clean Bali air on the world-famous Kuta beach, just minutes from the airport. While it’s a crowded and energetic place at night, Kuta is more laid-back in the morning, with only a few people jogging or relaxing on the white sand. There is also no problem finding delicious breakfast place on the beach, with shops and restaurants providing authentic Balinese and western meals.

Noon:  Within walking distance from Kuta are the upscale neighborhoods of Seminyak and Petitenget, lined with lavish boutiques and a variety of local and international restaurants. Indulge in a little shopping for the latest designer products, and enjoy some of the best Balinese or international food in the area.

Afternoon : No one wants to leave Bali without going to one of the many temples on the island. For a true Bali cultural experience, head to the Uluwatu Temple. The temple area is home to many playful monkeys that can get a bit grabby, so hold on to your personal belongings. The temple has tour guides that explain the origins of the temple, cultural practices, and religious rituals. The Uluwatu Temple often hosts traditional dance performances during sunset.

Evening:  For great food in the evenings at an oceanfront restaurant, slide over to the nearby Jimbaran Bay. Many of the restaurants serve seafood as well as Thai cuisine and offer outdoor seating on the sand so tourists can soak their feet in the sand while enjoying their meals. A bonus is that there are traditional dances and live music performances in the area.

Morning:  Travel to Ubud early the next day to experience the enchanting rice terraces. You can enjoy a walk or cycle in nature through villages and the world-famous rice terraces that embellish Ubud’s landscape.

Noon:  Afternoons are reserved for the animals at the Ubud Monkey Forest. Serving both as a natural reserve and sacred temple, this attraction offers the best of culture and nature in Bali. Many tourists visit to interact with the hundreds of monkeys that stay there, while others are more in awe of the Hindu temple. Regardless of your preference, this place is a must-visit.

Evening:  You absolutely cannot leave Ubud without seeing one traditional Balinese dance or music performance. The Ubud Royal Palace is arguably Ubud’s most important landmark and the best place to watch the cultural performances in the evenings. Tourists tend to crowd the palace during this time so visit early and reserve your seat.

The best countries and travel tips for visiting Southeast Asia: what to eat, where to go, what to see, how to get around. From backpacking to luxury travel, here’s everything you need to know

Southeast Asia is a place for an itinerary: when it comes to ‘best countries’ or ‘most interesting places’, it all depends on what you’re looking for. Two weeks on the beach ? Hitchhiking in the hills? Partying, self-indulgence, street food in Bangkok , river cruise in Phnom Penh? The list is endless. Here’s our guide to three of the top destinations in the region.

A taste for adventure

A selection of Thai street food served by a vendor — Shutterstock

Thailand is two extremes bound by a common thread. The cities are overwhelming, thrilling; a swarming mass of people, noises, smells and heat. The countryside is traditional, rural; plump hills, misty valleys, rice paddies and ancient villages. The one thing that runs through both ways of life is food .

Fresh, local, well-balanced and with a satisfying palette of flavors running from citrus to spice, herbal to sweet, Thai food is one of the most central parts of the culture. People do not just gather to have a meal, the meal is the reason people gather. It’s a small distinction, but an important one.

View this post on Instagram   A post shared by Kiwi.com (@kiwicom247)

No matter where you go, food will be central. Bangkok’s street food (different from a traditional Thai sit-down meal) is nonetheless an attraction in itself. Markets such as Ratchada Train Market, Chatuchak Weekend Market, Srinakarin Train Market and the touristy Khao San Road offer woks full of curries, noodles, stir-fries and seafood, as well as grilled chicken, steamed vegetables, or mango sticky rice.

Temples and beaches — two things that Thailand does extremely well

Once you’ve had your fill of food, it’s time to feed your soul. Thailand is a country of temples — over 40,000 of them in fact — and other things that look like temples, including the Sanctuary of Truth in Pattaya (the brainchild of an artist who spent two decades designing and building it out of teak), Chiang Rai’s White Temple (previously abandoned, now a sort of art gallery with colorful murals depicting strange but gentle representation of humanity… and Harry Potter), and the stunning Wat Mahathat, surrounded by national park in the ruined city of Ayutthaya.

Finally, you need to head to the sea. 2,815km of coastline means some of the world’s most stunning beaches , particularly in the south of the country, as well as on the 1,400 islands such as the famous Koh Samui in the Gulf of Thailand. Whether you’re looking for beach parties , water sports, cliff diving , or simply somewhere where no one will bother you for a while, head down to the clear, warm water and do your thing.

A place where hedonism and spirituality go surprisingly hand-in-hand

The island of Bali is Indonesia ’s most popular tourist destination, with people visiting all year round for its reputation as a party place. And while that’s certainly true, it also manages to be a place where you can get in touch with your spiritual side by visiting temples, learning about the local way of life, or attending a yoga retreat high up in the mountains.

The area comprising Kuta, Legian and Seminyak, to the southwest of Denpasar is many peoples’ first port of call if they’re looking for party action, with its 8km long beach backed by thronging streets of bars, restaurants, clubs and all the nightlife you could ever want. It’s not everyone’s cup of tea, but if you’re looking for wild nights followed by days of recovery on the beach, this is one of the top places to be.

For something a bit more on the local side, try Ubud, the cultural capital of the island. With scores of Hindu temples to explore, and the local economy underpinned by things like tea houses, art galleries, yoga studios and the like, it’s much more on the eat-pray-love end of the scale. Accommodation is generally pricier here than anywhere else, but it’s a great place to learn about the history and beliefs of the Balinese people: temple festivals and rituals happen almost every day, and traditional dances take place on the streets at night.

Surfing, scenery and spas

Woman in outdoor infinity pool at dusk — Shutterstock

No matter where you go around the coast of Bali, there are loads of opportunities to get involved in water sports like surfing (it’s one of the best locations in Indonesia), snorkeling , scuba diving, rafting and sailing. You might encounter dolphins or reef sharks, shoals of shimmering fish, manta rays, and the huge mola mola (or sunfish).

From down by the ocean, it’s up into the mountains or, even more exciting, trekking up to the threateningly smoky rims of volcanoes . Not for the faint of heart (figuratively or literally), you could alternatively choose to see the countryside by bicycle , taking a less stressful journey through rice paddies, and villages hidden in lush undergrowth. If even that sounds too much like hard work, Bali is home to some of the most luxurious and extravagant spa treatments anywhere in the world, including lava stone reflexology, a facial using sea quartz and diamond dust, and one spa offering bedtime stories whispered to you by a Buddhist nun .

Diversity makes for prosperity

The phrase ‘ cultural melting pot ’ is such a cliché as to be rendered virtually meaningless, but when a country has multiracialism (the ability for an individual to identify not as a member of one or multiple racial groups, but as a third category of something like ‘mixed-ness’) as part of its constitution, you realize you might need to wheel out the old cliché trolley.

With four official languages (English, Malay, Mandarin and Tamil) and 21 July being celebrated as Racial Harmony Day, Singapore has taken this multinationalism and used it as a basis for trade and commerce; since its independence in 1965, Singapore’s free trade agreements and direct foreign investment have seen mighty glass and steel skyscrapers spring up, marking it out as one of Asia’s great centers of wealth.

The modern-day miracle metropolis, just a stone’s throw away from nature

Monkeys crawling on the ground at a nature reserve in Singapore — Shutterstock

The ultimate aim, however, is to make Singapore a ‘City in a Garden’ as the project has it. This means making those skyscrapers sustainable , adding greenery wherever possible, and generally throwing vast amounts of money at making the city a leading light in the race for environmental equality. You don’t have to head far out of town before you’re on walking trails through the jungle , or rope walks across the treetops. You might meet some of the local wildlife —  monkeys, flying lemurs, hornbills, sea turtles, dolphins and the like — in one of the nature reserves , or by going on a night safari or river safari.

It’s an easy city to get around as well, due to the need for efficient public transport to cater to its 5.4 million inhabitants. The Singapore Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) is a shiny, modern system that can whizz you to pretty much anywhere around the city, from the Chinese temples to the temples of commercialism in the Marina Bay area. Shopping, street food and sightseeing are all within easy reach, so take time to investigate each area of the city. You can track the city’s evolving architecture, from the colorful shophouses of the Joo Chiat/Katong neighborhood, through the art deco stylings of Tiong Bahru, to the sleek, sci-fi biodomes of the Gardens by the Bay. That all of this exists at all is the true miracle of Singapore.

Vietnam vs Bali – Wondering which is better for your next trip? Both tourist places are extremely popular, have a lot of touristy offerings, and are relatively pocket-friendly. Therefore, this dilemma of whether to go to Vietnam or Bali for your next trip is understandable.

In this post, I will compare and contrast the two destinations based on my personal experience of traveling to the two places to help you determine which should be your next travel destination.

Quick Overview – Vietnam vs Bali While both Vietnam and Bali are excellent choices for your next trip, If you want friendly locals, pristine beaches, and a more relaxed outing – visit Bali. But if you want more variety in terms of tourist attractions, food, and cultural and historic offerings – visit Vietnam. If price is your primary criterion – you can visit either of the places on a small budget. The major differentiating factor would be the cost of flight tickets.

Read on to find out an in-depth comparison of Vietnam vs Bali based on my personal experiences.

Vietnam vs Bali: Which is Better For Travel

Cost of travel.

Riding a scooter in Hanoi

To be honest, both the places are extremely budget-friendly and the difference in the cost of travel only depends on how you choose to spend your money.

Nevertheless, as per Budget your trip , the average daily cost per day per person of Vietnam is USD 51 while that of Bali is USD 59. But just by looking at these numbers, don’t assume that Bali is more expensive than Vietnam.

My observations from traveling to the two places are

  • Accommodation is cheaper in Vietnam than Bali.
  • Drivers/Cars are more expensive in Vietnam
  • Manmade tourist attractions like Zoos, Amusement Parks are more expensive in Bali
  • Street food at both places is fairly comparable
  • Food at restaurants or cafés is slightly more expensive in Vietnam than in Bali

Thus, you can plan a trip to either place on a relatively low budget.

How Many Days Required

travelling thailand vietnam and bali

I have a full post on how many days are enough in Bali that you can read. It even includes a sample itinerary to make the most of your Bali trip. The post states that the minimum number of days required to visit Bali is between 7 and 10 . To do proper justice to your time in Bali, it is recommended to split your stay between a beach town in the south like Jimbaran, Nusa Dua or Pandawa and a green hilly area like Ubud.

On the other hand, if you are planning a trip to Vietnam, you need at least 10 days . Vietnam being a full country, there are lots of places to visit. You need to take internal flights or trains to cover the full country. To do justice to each place, you will need to spend about 2-3 days at every destination.

An ideal itinerary would require you to spend time at

  • Halong Bay,
  • Sapa or Ninh Binh,
  • Hoi An or Da Nang
  • Ho Chi Minh City

To see Vietnam in greater detail, it would even be advisable to add Ha Giang, Hue, Dalat, or Phu Quoc to your itinerary.

Friendliness of People

travelling thailand vietnam and bali

A big part of our overall experience of any place depends on how warm and welcoming the people are towards tourists.

In this regard, I felt that the Balinese people were extremely friendly. I never came across any rude or arrogant Balinese locals on my trips to Bali.

On the other hand, since tourism is not the primary source of income for Vietnamese people, Vietnamese people can come across as slightly rude. You would be rarely received with a warm, welcoming smile. Communication with Vietnamese locals would often even feel more transactional than friendly.

I have spoken all about this and other issues one could face in Vietnam in my post on 14 reasons why you may want to stay away from Vietnam.

(An exception to that was the staff at the Hammock Hotel in Ho Chi Minh City – read the full review of Hammock Hotel here)

It’s also easier to communicate with Balinese people as most understand basic English. Communicating with Vietnamese people without a translator is impossible in most cases.

Thus, from a people-friendliness point of view, Bali enjoys an upper hand over Vietnam

Geography and Climate

Rainy unpredictable weather in Vietnam

The geography and climate of Bali and Vietnam may be compared as follows

Accommodation

Hanoian Central Spa and Resort

Accommodation in Vietnam and Bali is comparable especially in the budget range. Both places offer good quality budget accommodation either in the form of hostels or budget rooms.

But in the mid-range category, you get much better value for money in Vietnam. In Bali, accommodation expenses can quickly start adding up once you move away from the budget range.

For the same price, you will get

  • bigger rooms in Vietnam
  • better amenities in Vietnam
  • better quality of stay

But the flip side to this is that there isn’t much difference between the offerings of a 3-4 star hotel in Vietnam vs that of a 5-star hotel. But in Bali, the difference in quality is noticeable. A 5-star property feels far more luxurious than a 3-4 star property.

Thus if you are looking to pamper yourself at a luxury property, Bali may be a better option for you. But if you want solid value from a mid-range property, you’ll be pleased with Vietnam.

Transport or Commute

Getting in a car in Vietnam

– Public transport in Vietnam is slightly more useful than the almost non-existent public transport in Bali – Renting a two-wheeler in Vietnam is slightly cheaper than in Bali. Vietnam per day scooter rental with petrol costs about USD 7, and Bali per day scooter rental with petrol costs about 9. – Hiring a car with a driver is cheaper in Bali than in Vietnam. In Bali, a full-day car with a driver costs about USD 40. In Vietnam, a full-day car with a driver costs about USD 55-60.

But the costs you save in Vietnam are often nullified because of the costs you need to incur on internal flights or trains to cover the length of the country.

travelling thailand vietnam and bali

In terms of food, Vietnamese food scores higher than Balinese food for its unique taste and excellent variety.

– The food options in Vietnam include Pho, Banh Mi, Spring Rolls, Bun Cha, Ban Xeo, Egg coffee, Goi Cuon, Com Tam, etc.

Non-vegetarian eaters would also be delighted to see preparations of snails, frogs, octopuses, etc available in street markets.

Vietnamese cold brew coffee and Vietnamese drip coffee are also famous all over the world for their rich, intense aroma.

– Bali, on the other hand, serves Nasi Goreng, Nasi Campur, Mie Goreng, Sate, Babi Guling, Bebek Betutu, Gado-Gado, etc. The cuisine relies heavily on rice and meat derived from pig, chicken, and duck.

But, international preparations like pasta, pizza, burgers, etc. are more easily available in Bali than in Vietnam where you need to mostly rely on local dishes.

In terms of vegetarian or vegan food availability, Bali scores higher than Vietnam

travelling thailand vietnam and bali

Vegetarian and vegan variants of rice, noodles, burgers, pizzas, pasta, salads, etc are found far more easily all across Bali. You won’t have to travel looking for vegetarian food places as almost all cafes, restaurants and beach-side shacks would serve vegetarian and vegan variants.

In Vietnam, the only vegetarian and vegan food options available in most restaurants and cafés would be steamed rice, rice paper, french fries, fruits, and salad. Many restaurants don’t serve vegan or vegetarian varieties of famous dishes like Banh Mi, Bun Cha, etc and you may have to specifically look for a restaurant serving vegan and vegetarian food using apps like Happy Cow.

Food in Vietnam is cheaper than in Bali.

Food in Bali is priced higher than in other Indonesian regions as it is the primary tourist destination in Indonesia. Vietnam, on the other hand, is not a tourist-centric economy and the food prices are very affordable.

travelling thailand vietnam and bali

Bali is a tourist destination and hence has quite a few hubs that stay open all night. Kuta, Seminyak, and Canggu have multiple bars and clubs. They are vibrant and full of life. Even the beach shacks at Kuta and Seminyak are bustling with spirited energy until well beyond midnight.

Vietnam, on the other hand, is not particularly famous for its nightlife. It does have a few pockets that turn into happening places like the Bia Hoi or the Beer Street in Hanoi, the Bui Vien Street in Ho Chi Minh City, or rooftop bars in other cities like Danang, etc. But other than that by 9 pm, most areas in Vietnam close for the day and turn into quiet, deserted areas.

Even the night markets set up in Hoi An, Hanoi and other parts of Vietnam close down by 11 pm.

History & Culture

War Remnants Museum at Ho Chi Minh City

If you love visiting places that give you a peak into the place’s history, Vietnam has a lot to offer. Its history has seen Indian, Chinese, and Japanese influences. Vietnam was also a French colony and its present-day architecture reflects that abundantly. In the second half of the 20th century, Vietnam also fought the Vietnamese war against the Americans.

If you want to understand more of these influences, you can visit the Hoa Lo Prison Museum in Hanoi, the National Historical Museum in Hanoi, the My Son sanctuary near Hoi An, the beautiful town of Hue, the War Remnants Museum in Saigon, the many structures in the UNESCO World Heritage town of Hoi An, etc.

To orient yourself culturally, you can also visit the many pagodas, ancient homes and caves, and temples all across Vietnam.

In Bali on the other hand, you would mainly find Hindu temples. These temples are found all over the island and include the famous Uluwatu Temple in the south, the Besakih temple, the Tanah Lot temple, the Taman Ayun temple, etc.

In addition to these, you would be thrilled to see the beautiful bamboo arches outside the homes, the idols of various Gods placed at the entrance of all homes, the stories of Ramayana told through cultural shows, etc. But from a historic point of view, the offerings of Bali don’t compare with those of Vietnam.

travelling thailand vietnam and bali

Bali beaches are famous all over the world. Being an island city, its coasts are home to all types of beaches. You can pick any based on your likes or dislikes

  • For surfing go to Padang Padang or Kuta
  • For partying try Seminyak
  • For seafood choose Jimbaran
  • For some sunbathing, get to Sanur
  • For watersports head to Nusa Dua

In addition to this, there are also islands near Bali that you could visit in a day.

Vietnam, on the other hand, has a long coastline that runs all through the length of the country. But its beaches are not the most tourist-friendly all over. In the North, if you want to spend time at the sea, you can stay at Halong Bay – but that is more of a port town than a beach area. In Central Vietnam too, there are a few great beaches in Da Nang and near Hoi An or Nha Trang. For a more concentrated beach holiday, you may have to visit Phu Quoc island.

Thus, if you want a classic beach holiday, Bali would be a much better choice than Vietnam.

Tourist Attractions

travelling thailand vietnam and bali

Both places have some extraordinary tourist attractions. But if you are considering versatility alone, Vietnam enjoys an edge because of its rich history and cultural diversity. Its food is also a strong pull for tourists.

In Vietnam, attractions range from

  • lakes e.g. Hoan Kiem lake
  • temples and pagodas
  • sanctuaries
  • cultural shows and theatre
  • farming trips
  • manmade attractions like the Ba Na Hills with its French village and Golden Hand bridge
  • old palaces and structures
  • zoos, parks, amusements areas
  • Cu Chi Tunnels
  • Islands and beaches
  • many types of boat rides like bamboo boat ride, basket boat ride, lantern boat ride, etc.
  • food tours and café hopping
  • shopping areas

travelling thailand vietnam and bali

Bali, on the other hand, has

  • temples and ancient homes
  • volcano and mountain range
  • rice fields
  • boating and watersport activities
  • island tours and adventure
  • zoos, gardens, and waterparks
  • cultural shows and theatres
  • shopping and handicraft markets

If you’re a typical tourist who wants a lot more variety in your itinerary, go for Vietnam. If you want a chilled-out vacation with a good dose of natural and cultural attractions – opt for Bali.

Kid-friendliness

At the Bali Zoo with our little one

Bali is a tourist-centric destination and as a result, has many manmade attractions that can keep kids happy.

The Bali Bird Park, the Bali Zoo, the cultural shows at Garuda Kencana, or the fabulous waterpark Waterbom make for excellent outings with kids. The turtle beach or other beaches with watersport activities are also excellent sources of entertainment for kids.

travelling thailand vietnam and bali

Vietnam, however, doesn’t have much to keep young kids interested. There are zoos, gardens, malls, and parks in major cities but what they offer is not worth a visit on a short trip. Older kids interested in history and culture would learn a lot from visiting the many historical places, museums, etc.

We have visited both places with our daughter and I definitely think she had more fun in Bali. In Vietnam too, she enjoyed observing the cultural differences, discovering new food items, spending time on a cruise, etc. – but there was nothing specially crafted for her age group.

Couple-friendliness

travelling thailand vietnam and bali

Want to decide between Bali and Vietnam for a romantic holiday? Bali definitely wins!

Bali has exotic beaches, prisitine mountain ranges, lush greenery and scenic beauty all across. Simply observing the beauty is enough to have a fulfilling holiday and you don’t necessarily need to pack your day with visits to various tourist attractions.

Vietnam, being a country, requires some city-hopping. The days are also jam-packed with visits to museums, temples, cruises, boat rides, etc. Visiting Vietnam and staying cocooned in one city would not feel as fulfilling as doing the same in Bali would.

Scams and Safety Concerns

Parking difficulties in Vietnam

Vietnam is fairly safe but not without its many scams that you have to constantly avoid.

Some common scams to avoid in Vietnam are

  • being given a lesser value similar currency note
  • bike thefts
  • showing you a more expensive tourist-only rate card or menu card
  • cab drivers taking you from a longer route to charge you more

Bali, on the other hand, felt safe throughout. We had to bargain when shopping for souvenirs when booking cars when getting two-wheelers on rent etc – but that’s expected at any place. The intention of the locals was not to scam or rob us.

Thailand Or Vietnam: The Honest Comparison [2023] You Need!

Last updated on February 1, 2023 by Wandering our World

S outheast Asia is one of those regions of the world everyone wants to visit at some point in their lifetime.

The vibrant cultures, incredible food, breathtaking landscape and exotic wildlife sum up the lure of this part of the globe – and Thailand and Vietnam have it all.

However Thailand and Vietnam are actually very different. So making the right decision about which to visit for your once-in-a-lifetime holiday is important.

For example, if you’re looking for breathtaking beaches, some adventure and a lively nightlife scene then Thailand will likely be a better choice than Vietnam.

But if your idea of a great vacation is a quieter country with authentic experiences and less travelled regions, then Vietnam with its unrivalled beauty and ethnic diversity could be the perfect choice for you.

However that’s just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to how Thailand and Vietnam differ.

That’s why we’re here to help! Having visited both destinations we compare them below, showing you their differences, similarities and what to expect in each.

  • A Quick Overview & Comparison

How Do The Beaches & Landscape Compare?

How does the culture & vibe compare, a taste of the east: how does the cuisine compare.

  • Which Is The Better Choice?

An infographic pitting Thailand vs Vietnam and showing some of the key differences that will be discovered later in the article.

A Quick Overview & Comparison : Thailand vs Vietnam

Which is the better holiday destination depends on what you want from your holiday.

But if beaches are the main priority then Thailand is a better choice than Vietnam. Thailand’s coastline is packed with stunning beaches (we name some of our favorites later in this article), and with 1430 islands there are countless to choose from.

However the popular beaches, cities, and tourist hotpots in Thailand can get very busy. After all, Thailand is one of the most popular destinations in the world.

But that also means a holiday in Thailand is often ‘easier’ than one in Vietnam. That is, if you want all-inclusive resorts and tourist excursions on your doorstep, then the popular regions in Thailand like Krabi and Phuket have those in abundance.

Crowds is less of a problem in Vietnam, which has its own great beaches too but less tourists. To put the two countries in context, Vietnam welcomes around 8-10 million tourists a year. Thailand welcomes 30+ million.

That makes Vietnam a great choice if you’re looking for less of the classic ‘tourist’ experience, and instead want to step away from chain hotels and into a country where tourists are far less in number and regions still feel very authentic.

Luckily, both countries have beautiful landscapes, mountains, jungles and waterfalls to explore too, so are great destinations for a sunseeker that’s also looking for some adventure.

A long boat docked on beach in Krabi, Thailand summers

However as we said, Vietnam is definitely less commercialized than Thailand. What that means is that a Vietnam vacation often feels like more of a cultural, rustic, and less ‘touristy’ experience than one in Thailand.

Locals and tourists intermingle often in Vietnam – more than in Thailand – and there’s a real enthusiasm for foreign visitors. Especially with the younger generation who love to try out their English skills on tourists!

The unfortunate reality is that in neighboring Thailand visitors are sometimes seen negatively. Therefore Thais are not always as friendly towards foreigners as Vietnamese are.

One of the reasons for that is the many party tourists who come to Thailand to drink, enjoy Full Moon parties, and visit Bangkok’s Red Light District.

But that does mean if you’re looking for a lively nightlife scene, Thailand is going to be a better destination than Vietnam.

In terms of expenses, Vietnam tends to be a cheaper country than Thailand for both accommodation and food.

Whilst in regards to crime, both countries have similar issues, and it’s important to keep an eye out for petty crime such as pickpockets. Don’t flash cash or expensive items, keep bags shut, and avoid badly lit areas at night.

Below we look at a some of our favorite areas in both countries, before comparing the culture and food in each. Stick around, because they’re quite different!

Beautiful sunset Tourist junks floating among limestone rocks at Ha Long Bay, South China Sea, Vietnam, Southeast Asia.

Thailand: The Beaches & Landscape

This country is one of those rare destinations that has it all. Beaches for relaxing, a famous nightlife and party scene, and food that’s known around the globe. It’s also one of the most beautiful countries on the planet. So if you’re looking for a destination that’s a great ‘all-rounder’, Thailand is hard to beat.

For unbelievable beaches, head out into the islands. Phuket’s famous beaches include Kata Beach , which offers a busy slice of paradise with street vendors, upmarket hotels, and beach activities such as surfing and snorkeling.

However Freedom Beach offers a more serene choice, whilst still providing convenient access to food vendors and beach chairs.

But in general, expect a livelier and busier beach experience than what you would get in Vietnam.

That said, if you travel away from Phuket there are more laid-back coastal options. One of our favorites is Sunrise Beach on Ko Lipe. This gorgeous long stretch of white sand has shallow warm water perfect for swimming. It’s laid back, quiet by Thai standards, and the perfect place to unwind.

Empty sunny Koh Lipe Beach with tall palms and beach bungalows

After a day’s relaxing, head to the region of Krabi where you can go rock climbing, jungle trekking and sea kayaking. Its stunning natural beauty, jungle-covered interior and incredible cliffs and caves offer an array of activities for tourists who want more from their trip than just relaxing on the beach.

For those looking for a more wholesome time, Koh Tao (meaning Turtle Island) on Thailand’s east coast is home to the country’s most beautiful coral reefs. Which naturally makes it the top destination for scuba diving and snorkeling. A great underwater camera – such as this one – is a must.

But if you want to see jaw-dropping wildlife head to Isaan . This barely visited region of Thailand – as we’ve written about before – is home to breathtaking national parks, hiking trails, elephants, and even temples built on volcanoes!

Isaan is a region almost all tourists ignore, but it feels a bit like Thailand before tourism took over.

Thailand elephant in the river

Vietnam: The Beaches & Landscape

This country reminds us a little of how Thailand used to be, before it became famous for Full Moon Parties, fun-filled Bangkok nights, and bucket list holidays. After all, Vietnam has exceptional beaches and dramatic scenery, but all with a rustic charm.

This less-traveled Asian destination also has loads of islands to explore. Many of which have secluded beaches that are breathtakingly beautiful.

One of our favorites is Sao Beach on the island of Phu Quoc. This stretch of soft white sand is serene, has calm swimming water, and there’s even a small swing attached to a palm tree so you can relax in style.

For some underwater fun, head to the Cham Islands . This UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve is made up of eight islands and is ringed by tropical coral reefs. The traditional fishing villages on these islands will take you back in time, and the crystal clear water has the ‘wow’ factor.

It’s probably the best snorkeling spot in Vietnam, and one of the best in the region. Our tip is to hire a kayak for the day and enjoy the serenity while spotting colorful reef fish beneath the surface.

Floating village near rock islands in Halong Bay

Back on the mainland, head to the port city of Da Nang , home to the Marble Mountains . These dramatic slabs of rock jut out from the city and into the sky and look otherworldly.

The five peaks are full of small walking trails that allow you to explore caves, tunnels, and discover statues that lie throughout this pilgrimage site.

For jungle trekking, monkey spotting, and the world’s largest cave – Hang Son Doong – visit Phong Nha Ke Bang National Park .

This spectacular area is a place where nature’s still in charge, and the noises of the cicadas coupled with the gorgeous waterfalls gives a sense of what Vietnam was like before humans inhabited the earth. It’s a wild and beautiful paradise.

Vietnam is also a country full of waterfalls, with many that are so big you must take a chartered raft to get up close to them! One of those is Ban Gioc Falls , a huge spectacular pair of gushing waterfalls on the China-Vietnam border. It’s well worth visiting.

Train Street Hanoi Vietnam

Thailand and Vietnam are culture-packed countries where you’re guaranteed to experience the incredible east.

As the less touristy of the two, Vietnam tends to offer a more authentic experience than Thailand. Although rural areas of Thailand, and regions like Isaan, also offer a look at this country before tourism took over.

However because Thailand has a much larger tourist sector there are many organized tours and excursion options available to visitors. Therefore it’s an easy country to navigate if you want cultural experiences without having to go out of your way to find them.

Thailand also has a lively nightlife scene, especially in Koh Phangan (more on that below), Patong and Bangkok. So if you’re looking for parties and fun past midnight, Thailand would be the best choice.

Thailand: The Culture & Vibe

Thailand is a country known for its food, culture, stunning scenery, and more recently a great party scene.

For those looking for a wild time, Bangla Road on Patong offers its own selection of bars, go-go clubs and neon-covered craziness. As well as the famous adult entertainment clubs that have become synonymous with Thailand.

Koh Phangan is most well-known for its Full Moon Parties. This small East Coast island is home to the most famous parties in Thailand and 10,000 to 30,000 people flock to them every month.

Around 90% of Thais identify as Buddhists, and there’s also a significant Hindu influence in the country too. Therefore away from the parties and beaches, Thailand is a very spiritual place filled with spectacular temples.

One of our favorites – and one of the most serene – is situated in Phanom Rung Historical Par k. A remnant of the Khmer Empire, Phanom Rung is a breathtaking temple built on the rim of an extinct volcano.

You could – and should – also have a go at Muay Thai , Thailand’s national sport. Muay Thai (or Thai Boxing) can be traced back to 18th century Thailand, and has its roots deeply ingrained in Thai culture.

Gyms up and down the country offer training sessions (from a single day, to several months) for foreigners and it’s a fantastic way to get to know this country and culture. In fact that’s something we’ve even written about in the past.

Vietnam: The Culture & Vibe

Vietnam is a country where tradition and culture still holds significant sway, and one where ancestors are revered. It’s also a country that still bears the scars of the Vietnam War.

To learn more about the war, a trip to the Cu Cui Tunnels near Ho Chi Minh City is a must. This huge sprawling network of underground tunnels was dug out by Viet Cong guerillas as they battled American troops. Now turned into a museum by the government, the tunnels give a brief insight into life during the war.

The ethnic diversity in Vietnam also means that throughout the country you will come across different groups with varying musical, cultural and culinary traditions.

A home-stay with one of those groups – such as the Red Dzao Hill tribe – is the best way to experience that first hand. They live in Vietnam’s Sapa region alongside the Black Hmong people, both of which have different languages and belief systems from the Kinh people who make up the vast majority of Vietnam’s population.

A trip to Vietnam shouldn’t be complete without spending some time in its famous capital city Hanoi . The centuries-old architecture is impressive, but so are the sprawling and chaotic markets in the Old Quarter.

Hanoi Night Market is a fun experience which is lively during weekend nights. Enjoy the street food, hunt out a bargain, and listen to the street musicians. As always in capital cities, be wary of pickpockets – our guide to safety in Hanoi can be found here.

Both countries will provide a treat for your tastebuds with unbeatable cuisine.

Thailand: The Cuisine

Thai food is famous around the world – and no wonder – so if you’re a food lover, then Thailand is going to be a dream destination.

Make sure you try the iconic Pad Thai – a stir fry dish made with thin rice noodles, meat or shrimp.

For something a little less known, Thailand’s remote and rarely visited northeast – Isaan – has a traditional dish called Laap which is delicious. It’s made up of minced meat seasoned with fresh herbs, lime juice and fish sauce, and is served with sticky rice.

You must try Thailand’s comfort food – Khao Phat – as well. This is good hearty fried rice that comes combined with a variety of ingredients. It’s perfect for a long day exploring Thailand’s sights.

Vietnam: The Cuisine

Vietnamese food rivals Thai when it comes to the taste test, so a holiday here won’t disappoint on the culinary scale either.

The country’s most famous dish is probably Pho – a noodle soup comprised of herbs and meat. Regarded as Vietnam’s national dish, this is best eaten on the street for an authentic experience.

For something a bit more hearty try Banh mi . This simple comfort food is Vietnam’s version of the submarine sandwich – a crusty baguette usually stuffed with pork and pickled vegetables.

If you have a sweet tooth then Vietnam will be just up your street too. One of the country’s specialties is Chè Trôi Nước – a sticky rice ball lathered in ginger syrup!

Thailand Or Vietnam: Which Is The Better Choice?

A holiday to either Thailand or Vietnam is going to be an unforgettable experience with great food, scenery and culture. But both countries do provide very different vacations.

If you’re looking for breathtaking beaches, some adventure and a lively nightlife scene then Thailand will be a better choice than Vietnam.

However if your idea of a great vacation is a quieter country with authentic experiences, then less-commercialized Vietnam with its unrivaled beauty and ethnic diversity could be the choice for you.

Vietnam or Bali: Which Southeast Asian Destination is Better?

Vietnam or Bali

Bali – a paradise island filled with natural beauty as far as the eye can see. And Vietnam – a country bundled with history and character. One thing for sure is that deciding which Southeast Asian destination to visit is no easy task.

Bali has been luring millions of tourists yearly and for good reason. What is arguably Indonesia’s most popular destination boasts affordable lodgings, scenery to keep your jaw dropping constantly and some of the friendliest people you could meet. Oh, and not to mention it’s backpacker central, so there’s always a good party to be had if that’s your scene. Vietnam, however, is a country of variety. From the hustle and bustle of its capital, Hanoi, to the sheer silent beauty of Ha Long Bay, this extraordinary destination further north of Bali is also a must see.

But we get it, time and budget can’t always permit both. So, we’ve curated a handy little comparison of all the top vacation necessities to see which one comes out on top. Vietnam or Bali? Let’s go.

Table of Contents

Vietnam or Bali: Prices

Hoi An in Vietnam

Luckily, like most destinations in Southeast Asia, your money will go a long way in both Vietnam and Bali. But in Vietnam you can stay in some of the most luxurious five-star hotels for as little as $40. So, if there’s any place to test out how the other half live, Vietnam is the place to do this. You are looking at spending around $15 a day on food, of course depending on your eating habits. But the good news is that the street food here is almost even better than the highest quality restaurants.

So, how does this compare to Bali ? Well, the prices can get a little steeper here due to it being the epicenter of Indonesia tourism, however, we’re not talking steep by Western standards. You can find accommodation here for the super cheap price of $5 and that’s not just basic. How does waking up surrounded by lush greenery and views out to the iconic rice fields sound? And you can certainly get by on a daily budget of around $25 here. There are also plenty of excursions to enjoy for under $10, such as the highly recommended, Sacred Monkey Forest.

So, overall, both will allow for a pretty comfortable vacation that shouldn’t drain the bank account too much.

Winner: Vietnam

Vietnam or Bali: Things to do

Balinese rice field

Where to even begin with things to do in Vietnam – let’s just say it’s a country with much to offer any tourist. However, there are a few things that are a definite must on any Vietnam itinerary, starting with Hanoi’s Old Quarter. This maze of narrow streets, filled with food vendors, shops, cafes and bars, set to a background noise of motorbikes buzzing past is the epitome of Vietnam’s colorful character.

But for when you want to escape the hustle and bustle of the capital, there are several options, ranging from the awe-inspiring architecture of the Golden Bridge , also known as The Hands of God (two huge hands supporting a mountain top walkway), to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Hoi An (a lantern covered ancient town). Or you could head further south to Vietnam’s largest city, Ho Chi Minh City or explore the country’s stunning islands by boat, we recommend the breathtaking Phu Quoc Island .

So how does Bali fare in comparison? Well, although Bali is much more concentrated in terms of size, you’d still be surprised at how much this island has to offer, besides soaking in the sun at some of the world’s most exotic beaches. A must see when you’re over in this part of the world is the spectacular, UNESCO World Heritage Site, Tegalalang Rice Terrace . These cascading emerald green fields, equipped with zip lines and jungle swings for the adventurous are one of the most photographed areas in all of Bali.

Or for the animal lovers , a trip to Sacred Monkey Forest and Bali Bird Park are not to missed. Other destinations you might want to tick off on the Bali checklist are Ubud (the cultural hub), Kuta (beach resort and party central) and Tanah Lot (temple situated on a rock in the sea and only around half an hour from the island’s capital, Denpasar).

Vietnam or Bali: Food

Local food in Vietnam

When it comes to Vietnam or Bali in the cuisine department, prepare for a very close call, as both destinations will leave you with an explosion of flavors on your taste buds. However, with Bali being an Island, many of its best dishes are sourced from the stunning surrounding waters. Some of the best grilled fish can be found on this idyllic hotspot.

So, while Bali may do the seafood a little better, Vietnam’s plethora of mouthwatering delicacies certainly keeps it in the game. Whether you’re tucking into a banh mi (baguette with a variety of fillings and plenty of coriander) for lunch, sipping on some pho (soup dish consisting of noodles, meat, and herbs) for dinner or grabbing a banh xeo (crispy pancake and street food favorite) on the go, you are guaranteed to be satisfied.

But when in Bali, eating like a local is a must, and there is no better way than to try some nasi goreng (fried rice, usually cooked with meat or vegetables and topped with a fried egg) and babi guling (stuffed pig, coated in a variety of spices). These are two of Bali’s most traditional dishes.

While Bali cuisine is influenced by other Asian nations such as China and India, Vietnam’s cuisine is heavily influenced by the French, however, one thing for sure is that both put their own stamp on dishes.

Winner: Draw

Vietnam or Bali: Beaches

Beach in Bali

So, while Bali certainly springs to mind as more of the dreamy island beach life, Vietnam’s less touristy beaches are equally stunning. Venture just a little further south from the capital and you will be blessed with the pristine white sands of Danang’s seaside offerings. Or for a more developed, traditional seaside resort, Nha Trang has plenty of sun, sea, and sand, with an abundance of eateries and shops nearby. But if a little seclusion is what you’re after, look no further than Bai Xep Beach, this little slice of peaceful heaven in a remote fishing village is the ultimate chillout spot.

But, with stunning tropical beaches often the poster choice of Bali advertising, it’s hard not to give the title to Bali in this one. Most of the best beaches can be found in the south of the island, around the areas of Kuta, Jimbaran, and Seminyak. However, don’t expect your own private spot around here, as Bali beaches can get rather crowded. But one look at the lush mountainous surroundings, dazzling turquoise waters and impeccably soft sand and you’ll understand why. Kuta Beach is generally where the party’s at (quite literally) and one of the most famous beaches in all of Indonesia. By day it is a haven for surfing, lounging, and soaking in the vacation buzz. After dark, it becomes nightlife central, with an abundance of bars and clubs on offer.

Winner: Bali

Vietnam or Bali: Nature

Halong Bay in Vietnam

Vietnam or Bali for nature is definitely a tough one. On the one hand there is Vietnam with its epic forests, spectacular caves, and fascinating mountain ranges. On the other hand you have Bali, a treasure trove of stunning waterfalls, incredible rice fields and sublime volcanic landscape.

For any nature lover in Vietnam, there is a plethora of activities to enjoy, from kayaking down the limestone cliff surrounded wetlands of Ninh Binh, to trekking in the emerald-green heaven of Sa Pa, or quad biking in the vibrant red sand dunes of Mui Ne.

While Bali has less landmass than Vietnam, the nature that this relatively small island has to offer is equally impressive. You can climb Bali’s highest mountain, Mount Agung, which is also an active volcano, in around 6 hours, although you may want to enlist the help of a guide for the best routes. Or perhaps you want to explore some of the finest lotus ponds and endemic plant species housed in the Bali Botanic Garden. Or maybe take in the astounding power of the 50-meter high, NungNung Waterfall.

Whichever way you choose to enjoy nature, both destinations have stunning scenery in bucket loads.

Vietnam or Bali: Nightlife

Man DJing in club

So, if the idea of having a few wild nights on vacation floats your boat, where will you find the best party scene, Vietnam or Bali? Well, unlike its fellow backpacker favorite, Bali, Vietnam is not as known for its wild nightlife. However, that’s not to say there isn’t a decent number of places to let your hair down around here. From Bia Hoi, Hanoi’s quintessential nightlife spot to the rooftop bars of Ho Chi Minh City and Danang, or even partying on a boat that’s drifting in the stunning Ha Long Bay, there’s sure to be something to take your fancy.

However, with Bali being the spring break destination of choice for Australians, that’s got to tip the balance in its favor, as we all know the Aussie reputation for liking a bit of a party. And what’s an island destination without a few epic beach bars thrown in? Enjoy cocktails by the sea in the popular Potato Head Beach Club in Seminyak. This area, along with the other southern gems of Kuta and Canggu reign supreme when it comes to nightlife, with rows of bars and clubs to party the night away. After all, the party doesn’t even really get started until midnight in Bali.

Vietnam or Bali: History & Culture

Crafting traditional Vietnam hats

And last but not least in our Vietnam or Bali battle, who will win in the history and culture department? Well, the fact that Vietnamese culture is one of the oldest in Southeast Asia certainly gives it an advantage.

With a history dating back thousands of years, this communist country has been occupied and divided by several nations. The French colonization in the 19th century can still be seen in much of the architecture today. Vietnam’s rich history can be found in the many museums dotted around the cities and there are several dedicated entirely to the Vietnam War (referred to as the American War in Vietnam), including the fascinating War Remnants Museum in Ho Chi Minh City, where you can see the equipment used during the war, as well as exhibits documenting different aspects of this brutal battle.

Bali, on the other hand is steeped in rich culture and religious tradition. It was once an important trading destination and much of the Hindu influence seen today is a result of early Indian traders.

There are many festivals held throughout the year, including one of their most important, Galungan, which marks a time when ancestral spirits return to earth. However, you don’t need to wait around for a festival for a bit of Balinese culture as it can be seen pretty much everywhere you go, from the art masterpieces to the traditional dance shows, as well as the many museums and sacred temples.

Vietnam or Bali: Conclusion

So, if you’re looking for a vacation in which to experience a bit of everything, including the hustle and bustle of city life, spectacular scenery, and cuisine to die for, Vietnam would probably be your best bet. However, if a more idyllic, concentrated setting, along with a great nightlife scene is what you’re craving, Bali may be more suited to what you’re looking for.
