Columbia River Gorge Tour

Experience one-of-a-kind views, majestic waterfalls & more!

DESCRIPTION: A half an hour east of Portland you can find some of the most magnificent scenery in the country – skyscraper cliffs, giant sturgeon, and majestic waterfalls. During the last ice age, a cataclysmic event occurred, that left a lasting monument along the path of the mighty Columbia River. A great flood sheared away the land, leaving stone cliffs and water falls that form the world famous “Columbia River Gorge”.

View the majesty from the Vista House atop 800-foot sheer rock cliffs, see Multnomah Falls (the second tallest year round waterfall in the country), or witness the free-falling splendor of Latourell Falls. In the autumn, you can witness salmon spawning in nearby Eagle Creek.

PRICE INCLUDES: – Pick-up & drop off at predetermined location – Plenty of bottled water & light snacks – Fun, friendly & knowledgable tour guide

PLEASE NOTE: This tour does not include gratuity. Pick-up and drop-off is at predetermined location of guest’s choice.

If you would like to be picked up outside of downtown Portland, please contact us for other options!

FUN FACT: The Columbia River Gorge is unique in many ways. Even though it is dramatic in it’s depth and size, it was only formed approximately 15 thousand years ago, during the last ice age. This is almost contemporary, in geologic terms. It is also home to the tallest waterfall in Oregon, Multnomah Falls, which is over twice the height of the Statue of Liberty!

$65 – 4 Hours

SCHEDULE: The morning tour leaves from downtown Portland at 8 AM and returns at Noon. The afternoon tour leaves from downtown Portland at 1 PM and returns at 5PM.

Special pick-up & drop-off locations are avalible upon request and may require an additional fee.

About the Columbia Gorge Waterfalls and Landscape

The Columbia River Gorge consists of over 290,000 acres and is designated as a National Scenic Area. Up to 4,000 feet deep, the Gorge is over 80 miles long, cutting through the mighty Cascade Range and forms the boundary between Washington and Oregon.

The Gorge began roughly 17 to 12 million years ago, and developed over a period of approximately 10 million years. It was during this time that the Cascades rose. The Columbia slowly eroded the new mountain range and managed to maintain its course.

The Columbia Gorge had the most dramatic help when the Missoula Floods raged through in the last ice age, cutting the steep cliffs visible today. The flood waters are believed to have been up to 2000 feet deep and flowed a estimated 80 miles a hour. The floods were also responsible for the many layers of exposed volcanic rock and the waterfalls themselves.

Columbia River Gorge Waterfalls Half Day Tour

Quick Details

  • Clock Duration: 4 hours

Embark on a Columbia River Gorge Waterfalls Tour from Portland, Oregon

Species seen nowhere else in the world, dramatic basalt lava flows nearly a mile deep, and some of the world’s most beautiful waterfalls are a few of the sights that await you on this tour. Come experience the grandeur of the Columbia River Gorge, one of the United States’ most photographed National Scenic Areas. We will drive along the oldest scenic highway in the US, stopping at sweeping viewpoints, flowing falls, and a historic lodge.

Columbia River Gorge Tour Highlights:

  • Crown Point Vista House
  • Columbia River Gorge
  • Latourell Falls
  • Horsetail Falls
  • Multnomah Falls

Typical Columbia River Gorge Trip Itinerary

T his is a half day tour, typically offered from 8:30AM – 12:30PM, 1PM – 5PM, or 2PM – 6PM. Please note, the tour route and sights may vary depending on the time of year and weather conditions.  It is always our goal to provide you with the most interesting adventure possible.

Departing downtown Portland, we’ll head east along the Columbia River towards the quaint town of Troutdale, known as the Gateway to the Gorge. We will join the beautiful Historic Columbia River Highway, the first planned scenic roadway in the United States, and wind our way along the Sandy River to our first stop for the day: Crown Point Vista House. This famous overlook sits 733 feet above the Columbia River, atop the remains of a lava flow that swept through the Gorge around 14 to 17 million years ago! There, we will find amazing 180-degree views of the Columbia River Gorge and have time to explore the Vista House. This intricately designed observatory and museum is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

From there, we will again join the historic highway as we drive deeper into the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area. Our first waterfall for the day will be the dramatic Latourell Falls, which plunges 249 feet over a massive wall of columnar basalt. Depending on the season, a short ¼-mile, well-maintained trail hike will be led to get a closer view of the falls.

Continuing on our journey through the gorge, we’ll get a sneak peek of the famed Multnomah Falls on our way to our next stop—an overlooked gem directly off of the historic highway called Horsetail Falls. Once at the base of these falls, it won’t be difficult to see how it received its name. Feel the mist on your face as the water plummets down into the deep pool below.

Worry not! The grand Multnomah Falls will be the final stop in our journey. Plummeting 620 feet in two major steps, Multnomah Falls is the highest waterfall in Oregon and second highest continuously flowing waterfall in the nation! There, we will explore the Multnomah Falls Historic Lodge (a Cascadian style stone and timber lodge built in 1925) as well as the beautiful Multnomah Falls itself. During the gorge fire of 2017, the wildland fire crew fought tirelessly and ultimately saved this historic landmark. The easily accessible viewing platform offers a full view of the Benson Bridge and cascading falls beyond it.

Our journey will return us to Portland via the Columbia River scenic route (approximately 45 mins). Depending on changing visitation patterns in the Columbia River Gorge, this tour may run in the reverse order than what is listed above.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Chevron down Will there be refreshments offered on the tour?

Yes! Complimentary bottled waters will be available throughout the day.

  • Chevron down What should I wear?

Oregon’s weather, although very temperate, can sometimes be unpredictable. Bringing along a rain jacket and wearing multiple layers is typically the best option for almost anywhere in Oregon. Umbrellas will be available on the tour. Comfortable, closed-toed shoes are highly recommended.

  • Chevron down What kind of vehicle will we be traveling in?

We will be exploring in a large van. This luxury vehicle comes with an extra tall roof so that everyone feels comfortable and not cramped. There are oversized windows to allow for the best visibility for our guests! See more information on our General Info page.

  • Chevron down How many fellow travelers should I expect on my tour?

We generally prefer to limit our group size to 12 travelers to ensure that everyone is comfortable and relaxed. Throughout the high travel season, one can expect tour group sizes to be around 6 to 12 people. During the rest of the year, group sizes can typically range from 2 to 8.

  • Chevron down We will be driving for a while, what are the bathroom options?

We have tried to include access to public bathrooms at all of our planned stops. No worries though! If the need arises, your guide can find a convenient place to stop. There are no restrooms in our tour vehicles.

  • Chevron down How much walking is required on this tour?

The half-day Columbia River Gorge Waterfalls Tour gives you the opportunity to walk on well-maintained trails, though it is not required. Typically, the furthest distance we walk at one time during the day is ½ a mile round trip. Some trails/paths are graded, but only slightly or for a short distance.

We aim to spend about 50% of our time on tour exploring the sights and stretching our legs. There is typically walking required to get the full experience at each stop, but for most of the sights, the actual distance walked is completely up to you. We make time at each stop for personal exploration, so you can choose to find a quiet place to sit, head to the nearest viewing point/platform, or meander further down the path or trail. Unfortunately, there are not many stops on tour that can be experienced if you choose to remain back in the vehicle.

  • Chevron down What if I've made a reservation, but can't make it? Is a refund available?

Please read the full Terms and Conditions here.

For more information, please refer to our General Info page. Please don’t hesitate to contact us with any questions!

We want to go to Columbia River Gorge next. Here is our question. Night 7 we need to be at a Portland airport hotel as we will have an early morning flight the next day. Should we stay at that same airport hotel for night 6 and then do a day trip to Columbia RIver Gorge? Or should we stay at a hotel/resort nearer to the hiking etc. If so...any recommendations in the 300-350 range?

Thank you! I have already learned so much from reading the previous posts.

If you are adventurous you could also look at Edgefield Hotel in Troutdale-just a bit east of the airport. Most rooms are 'European' with bathrooms down the hall, but a few rooms have private baths.

Other places to look at in Cannon beach is Inn at Cannon beach or stephanie inn - both nice places to stay

if want moderate place to stay check nearby Manzanita.

A few years ago, we discovered Manzanita when on a road trip out of Vancouver , WA that was suppose to be down the coast of Oregon. We ended up staying in Manzanita for several nights. Never made it past Tillamook on that trip.

Manzanita is about 20 minutes south of Cannon Beach. But it isn't a crazy, busy tourist town. The beach is easily accessible and not crowded.

Man charged with kicking, breaking landmark elevator in Oregon City

OREGON CITY Ore. (KPTV) - A man was charged with first-degree mischief Saturday after the Oregon City Municipal Elevator was damaged Friday, according to the Oregon City Police Department.

The Municipal Elevator has been in downtown Oregon City since 1955. It’s the only city-operated elevator in the country and is one of four in the world.

Wendy Wessel has lived in Oregon City her whole life and remembers taking the municipal elevator as a kid. On Saturday, she brought her own children to the elevator for prom pictures but was greeted by an ‘out of order’ sign.

“It’s really unfortunate that somebody has done such a devastating thing to a fixture of Oregon City,” Wessel said.

On Friday around 11:45 p.m., video surveillance footage caught a man kicking the door of the city landmark at 300 Seventh Street. Authorities said the elevator is now broken and estimate repairs will cost more than $1,000.

“If you look up Oregon City, it’s on all the pictures. It’s a great view, you get a viewpoint of the river,” Wessel said. “It’s been there forever. It’s been there since Oregon City.”

Police said they believe the man in the security footage was 22-year-old Evan Bettencourt. He was arrested Saturday and is being held at the Clackamas County Jail.

Terry Richardson works at the gift shop and said the vandalism is sad, but not shocking.

“We’ve had people break through the doors, get in here, fool around and kind of ransack the place, we’ve had these windows shot out, and it’s nice to see a little bit of attention paid to it this time so maybe we can address these issues,” Richardson said.

He’s worked at the elevator for more than five years, and said it’s a destination steeped in history.

“You go to the Gorge to see Multnomah Falls, you come to Oregon City you got to ride the elevator,” he said. “It’s just sad to know that people have come here from a long ways off and they’re not able to ride the elevator.”

Dan Walters, who also came to visit the elevator Saturday, agreed.

“It’s disappointing,” Walters said. “This has been here for decades and thousands of people come to see it. To have things like this interrupted by vandalism is just disappointing.”

Richardson said there’s no timeline yet as to when the elevator may be back up and running.

“There’s nothing to steal here,” Richardson said. “All you can do is damage historical things. Which is pointless. Pointless and sad. Really sad.”

NOAA Fisheries announces publication of the final rule (89 FR 22966, April 3, 2024) to approve changes to the Pacific Halibut Catch Sharing Plan for the International Pacific Halibut Commission's regulatory Area 2A off Washington, Oregon, and California. This action also approves and implements management measures for the 2024 recreational fisheries in Area 2A that are not implemented through the International Pacific Halibut Commission (IPHC). These measures include the recreational fishery seasons and subarea allocations for Area 2A. Additionally, this final rule includes a new inseason management provision to transfer anticipated uncaught recreational fishery allocation between states, as well as a new management line at Point Arena, California, creating two subareas with separate allocations off California. Regulatory Background

Since 1988, the NOAA Fisheries (NMFS) has implemented catch sharing plans that allocate the IPHC regulatory Area 2A Pacific halibut catch limit between treaty tribal and non-tribal harvesters, and among non-tribal commercial and recreational fisheries. The Council develops catch sharing plans in accordance with the Northern Pacific Halibut Act of 1982 (pdf). In 1995, NMFS approved a Council-recommended, long-term Catch Sharing Plan (pdf). The Council has recommended and NMFS has approved adjustments to the Catch Sharing Plan each year to address the changing needs of these fisheries. In addition, each year NMFS must issue management measures to govern the recreational fishery ( 50 CFR 300.63(b)(1) ). These measures include the recreational fishery seasons, allocations, closed areas, and bag limits for Area 2A.
