blog54 2

The direct route from Jodhpur to Jaisalmer is around 281 km which is roughly 175 miles. The entire road stretch is a paved National Highway. However, with the detours that we highly recommend (i.e., travel via Pokhran), the distance will be around 307 km (190 miles).

On this route, you will travel on two National Highways – NH 114 to Pokhran and on NH 15 from Pokhran to Jaisalmer.

You will find the route mostly uneventful and comfortable; however, there will be a few patches where the road will be unpaved and might cause you discomfort. So, do look out for these patches and try to drive slowly on them.

If you are worried about the number of petrol pumps and eateries, then let us tell you that there are ample of them on the entire route. So, even if you head out early in the morning, do not worry.

What is the drive time for the entire Jodhpur to Jaisalmer Road trip?

If you were to drive straight through, the drive would take you on an average of 4-5 hours, given that the roads are clear without any congestion. However, there are many eateries that you’ll want to stop along the way and many detours that you must not miss. So, add a variance of at least one hour for food, and estimate the rest as per the number of detours you are willing to make.

What Is The Best Time To Take The Jodhpur To The Jaisalmer Road Trip?

blog54 3

Ideally, the best season for a Jodhpur to Jaisalmer is between October to February as the weather during this time is pleasant and not unbearable for Jaisalmer.

However, if you ask us, we would suggest you take this road trip early on, maybe in September end or October first week, given that you can bear some extra hours in the sun.

That is because this way, you can save yourself from the maddening crowd that flocks here during the peak tourist season.

Note: May is the hottest month in Rajasthan, averaging 40° C ( 104 ° F). If you do not want to bear the brunt of the scorching sun, avoid taking this road trip at this time.

Also, avoid August, too, as the frequent rain showers might spoil all your travel plans.

What Is The Recommended Timeline For A Jodhpur To Jaisalmer Road Trip?

See for this road trip; you can either start early from Jodhpur, take a few detours, and reach Jaisalmer on the same day. Or you can take your time with the detours and complete this road trip in 2 days with a night stay in Osian.

The choice is yours, and to be honest, it boils down to how long you sit behind the steering wheel. If you think you’ll be able to drive for six-plus hours and enjoy everything that comes your way, then completing this trip in a day makes sense, otherwise not

Do note that to explore Jaisalmer and Jodhpur properly; you need two days each. So the ideal timeline of this road trip is around 5-6 days, depending on your preferred way of covering the Jodhpur Jaisalmer stretch.

What To See Between Jodhpur And Jaisalmer By Road? – Possible Detours

blog54 5

Rajasthan is a colossal land of incredible people, culture, and stunning natural terrains. Years after years, people have visited and revisited this state in search of a luxurious escape from everyday life.

So it only makes sense to say that there is a lot to see and do on this road trip. In fact, all the possible detours on it are very awe-inspiring—one of the reasons why we refrained from the itinerary concept on this road trip. There was no way in which we could fit these diverse places in a themed itinerary box.

So let your imagination run wild while you shortlist the detours from the following that you may want to add on your Jodhpur to Jaisalmer road trip.

1. Balsamand Lake

blog54 6

If you want to start your drive with some tranquility and peace, then, do visit the Balsamand Lake on your way to Jaisalmer from Jodhpur.

Balsamand Lake is an artificial lake built in 1159 AD. The lake is a kilometer long and is set amidst a manicured garden of trees not far away from Jodhpur.

You can easily cover it if you’ve made it early on the Jodhpur – Jaisalmer highway

Now a part of a heritage property, the lake was once a primary water source for the city of Jodhpur. You will find this property reminiscing its glorious past with its many red sandstone structures that are sprinkled all across its shores.

Visit this place early in the morning to spot monkeys and peacocks.

blog54 7

Mandore is the second pitstop that will grace you with its presence on your road trip.

Often referred to as the abandoned treasure trove of the desert, Mandore is located some 9 km (5.5 miles) from Jodhpur City.

What you are destined to see in this former capital of Marwar is a unique blend of melancholy and luxury, which is a rarity on its own.

Spend at least one to two hours here exploring the much-infused history of this town. In this pursuit, live an incomplete fairy tale straight out of a history textbook at the best-preserved structures.

If not for this, come here to get some fantastic pictures clicked.

To do so, go to Mandore Gardens for what can be undoubtedly called the town’s glorious past.

  • Cenotaphs or Chattris of the many Maharajas of Jodhpur – a group of red sandstone buildings with intricate carvings, pillars, and elaborate corridors dating back to the 17th- 18th century.
  • The Hall of Heroes showcases beautiful images and statues of Rajput heroes.
  • The temple of 33 crore Gods consists of a myriad of murals and sculptures dedicated to Hindu gods.
  • Mandore Palace and Fort: You can avoid this if you wish; however if you want to catch a glimpse of how a 6th-century structure looks, you should certainly go there.

Essential Info:

Mandore Gardens remain open daily from 9 am until 10 pm and charges INR 50 or ($ 0.78) per person.

blog54 8

Not even 100 km from Jodhpur lies your next pitstop, which is best known as the “Oasis of the Thar Desert.”

Like many others, you too may mistake this town as a small and uneventful getaway. However, to your surprise Osian or Osiyan will sprawl before you, enormous, stately, and strangely intimidating.

This town was once the major religious and cultural center of the Mewar Kingdom. It was home to a plethora of shrines, most of which got devastated with time, leaving behind a few temples that speak of the legacy of that era.

A rugged terrain, glittering sand dunes, and an array of ancient temples make Osian an offbeat delight, even today.

Besides basking in the gorgeous terrain, there are a plethora of activities you’ll be able to indulge in while you are here.

Here are some:

  • Visiting Sachiya Mata Temple. During your time in Osian, we’d highly recommend you see the beautiful Sachiya Mata Temple. This temple is perched on a hill and is dedicated to Lord Indra’s wife, who is of equal significance in both Hinduism and Jainism. Reach the temple complex after climbing a flight of hundred steps.
  • Surya Temple: Famous as the “Khajuraho of  Rajasthan ,” the Surya or Sun Temple is a 10th-century shrine of the Sun God best known for its architectural splendor and intricate carvings.
  • Mahavira Temples: 15 km from Osian lies another set of gorgeous ancient temples, that can make your heart skip a beat. Once there were around 108 of these beautifully carved temples, now only a few remain for pilgrims and tourists alike.
  • Indulging in camel safari is another great thing to do in Osian. Even though you’ll be heading to the safari city of Jaisalmer, there is a certain something to the camel safari in Osian that may not be found in Jaisalmer. Maybe it is because of its rural vibes or the less crowded camping scene, or its more pocket-friendly nature.

There is no entry fee per se for any of the temples in Osiyan. Plus, anytime before dusk and after dawn is suitable for a visit here.

4. Khichan Village

blog54 9

If birds fascinate you and make your heart happy, then taking a detour to Khichan Village (in winter) makes absolute sense for you.

Located some 150 km from Jodhpur, Khichan is the village of migrating birds.

Every year tens of thousands of birds flock to this village to demonstrate the unique man-bird relationship Khichan is famous for.

Note: Take this detour only if you travel in the winter months somewhere after October and before March

blog54 10

Pokhran is not only the halfway milestone on the Jodhpur to Jaisalmer road trip, but it is also a mesmerizing town that was once a favorite place of the  Rajasthan  royals.

Exhibiting the  authentic Rajasthani flavor  and an array of beautiful structures, a small halt at Pokhran can render you beautiful photography spots and fascinating views

Here are the places that you should definitely see in Pokhran:

1. Pokhran Fort is a beautiful structure smacked right in the heart of this town. It is several hundred years old and is home to some of the region’s most magnetic palaces. Do visit the Pokhran Museum inside the fort to view relics, sculptures, clothes, and frescos.

Entry to the fort is allowed from 8 AM onwards. The fort closes at 7 PM, and you can enter the fort by paying only 50 INR as a foreigner (20 INR for Indians). A visit to the museum will cost you extra. It will be around 200 INR (50 INR for Indians).

6. Ramdevra Temple

blog54 11

About 12 km from Pokhran is a village called Ramdevra dedicated to a Hindu saint with the same name.

You can make a brief stop at this temple as it holds in high reverence by both Hindu and Muslim devotees.

The temple is not out of the ordinary. Still, it attracts a lot of tourists and devotees.

If you stop here, you will totally find some solace, especially after hours of driving.

7. Jaisalmer War Memorial

blog54 12

Located 10 km before Jaisalmer city, right where greenery slowly begins to disappear and sand dunes appear, is this beautiful memorial of the Indo-Pak war.

If you stop here, you will be subjected to a sight filled with glorious memories of wars, struggles, weapons, etc.

You can spend an hour reminiscing about history if you may please. Entry to the park will cost you around 30 INR, and watching a documentary on the same will be another 30 bucks.

Jaisalmer Guide: Planning Your Trip

trip to jaisalmer and jodhpur

Michele Falzone/Getty Images

Remotely located in far western Rajasthan, near the border of Pakistan, Jaisalmer requires effort to reach but it's definitely worth it. Rising out of the sandy Thar Desert, this astonishing golden sandstone city will transport you to another era, back when it was a stop on the Silk Route from Central Asia to China. Dominating the landscape is Jaisalmer's evocative 12th-century fort, which was once inhabited by royal rulers and is still home to a quarter of the city's residents. It's one of the last living forts in India and the world, and is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Find out all you need to know in this Jaisalmer guide.

Planning Your Trip

  • Best Time to Visit: Jaisalmer has an extreme desert climate with cold winter nights, scorching summer days, and very little rain. The tourist season runs from October to March during the coolest parts of the year. In January, overnight temperatures drop to around 41 degrees F (5 degrees C), but the days are pleasant, with highs usually above 68 degrees F (20 degrees C). It's not advisable to visit Jaisalmer from April through August, unless you can deal with searing daily temperatures above 104 degrees F (40 degrees C). The September shoulder season will still be hot, but it can be ideal for avoiding the crowds.
  • Language: Rajasthani, Hindi, and English.
  • Currency: Indian rupee.
  • Time Zone: UTC (Coordinated Universal Time) +5.5 hours, also known as Indian Standard Time. Udaipur does not have daylight saving time.
  • Getting Around: Much of the city can be covered on foot, so do bring comfortable walking shoes. Bicycles (useful for accessing narrow lanes and avoiding traffic bottlenecks) and motorcycles are also available for rent. Alternatively, auto rickshaws are convenient for short trips and can be readily flagged down. If you're venturing further afield into the desert, it's best to hire a taxi for the day. Rates start from around 3,000 rupees ($40). Taxi companies also offer half-day local sightseeing excursions from around 1,500 rupees ($20). App-based cab services such as Uber don't operate in Jaisalmer as of yet.
  • Travel Tip: Try to catch the fun Jaisalmer Desert Festival, held over three days in late January or February each year.

Things to Do

Jaisalmer provides an incredible opportunity to immerse yourself in a piece of living history and learn about desert culture. The city revolves around the fort and has magnificent 19th-century noble mansions, ornate Jain temples dating back to the 12th century, royal cenotaphs, and a serene 14th-century man-made lake dotted with small shrines. Sunsets over the fort are spectacular, as its structure appears to merge with the desert. You'll want to devote at least a day to exploring the surrounding desert landscape, too.

  • Take a guided walking tour of the fort and surrounding vicinity. Several companies offer such tours, including this insightful Fort Heritage Walk by Jaisalmer Magic . There's a labyrinth of shops, restaurants, homes, hotels, places of worship, and a museum inside the fort. It's fascinating!
  • Marvel at the architecture and intricate stone carvings of Patwaon ki Haveli , Nathmal ki Haveli, and Salim Singh ki Haveli mansions. Patwaon ki Haveli is the pick of the bunch if you're short on time or money.
  • Go on a camel safari in the desert , or jeep safari if you don't have an affinity for camels.

Check out our article about the top things to do in Jaisalmer for more information.

What to Eat and Drink

Jaisalmer's distinctive regional cuisine is reflective of the ingredients available in the arid desert environment. It's typically vegetarian, and utilizes a lot of pulses and hardy grains such as millet. Ker Sangri is an unusual specialty of the region, made from pickled Indigenous berries and beans that grow wild in the Thar Desert. Try Haldi ki Sabji (turmeric yogurt curry) during winter. The city's most iconic drink is a cooling Makhania Lassi (sweet buttermilk with dry fruits). Pyaaz ki Kachori, a popular snack of deep-fried pastry discs with onion filling, is sold on streets all over the city. Local sweets include Ghotua Laddoo and Panchdhari Ladoo (balls of flour, ghee, and spices). Get them from Dhanraj Ranmal Bhatia sweet shop near the fort.

You'll no doubt encounter government-authorized bhaang shops in Jaisalmer. Bhaang is a paste made from cannabis plant leafs, and it has an ancient connection with Hinduism and Lord Shiva . It's commonly served in drinks during the Holi festival . The shops in Jaisalmer sell it in cookies, cakes, and lassi (a yogurt-based shake). Be careful to consume in moderation, though, because you won't feel the effects straight away.

Jaisalmer isn't known for its nightlife or extensive range of alcohol, so your best bet for a memorable evening is to head to a rooftop restaurant or bar with fort views at sundown. Cafe the Kaku at near Sunset Point and Helsinki House hotel near Gadi Sagar are both outstanding. The Dunes Bar at the Marriott Resort and Spa is more upmarket with cocktails and fine wines.

Where to Stay

Visitors to Jaisalmer are often keen to stay within the fort, which is understandable as it certainly is alluring. However, it's important to be aware of the environmental challenges the fort is facing, particularly damage from drainage and water seepage. In addition, keep in mind that accessibility can be an issue, as cars aren't permitted inside the fort and auto rickshaws can only go up to certain points. As an alternative, there are many atmospheric accommodations for all budgets in the area below the fort, and they provide a panoramic vista of the fort from their rooftops. Tourists often spend a night or two in the desert near Jaisalmer as well. The majority of desert camps are situated around the Sam Sand Dunes. This area is very commercial, though; if noise is a concern, choose a camp that's further out from the tourist hub there, or stay in the Khuri Sand Dunes.

Check out our recommendations of the best Jaisalmer hotels with fort views for all budgets, and the top Jaisalmer desert camps for glamping .

Getting There

Jaisalmer's small airport operates out of an Indian Air Force base. It receives limited direct flights from nearby major cities such as Delhi, Ahmedabad, and Mumbai. By road, Jaisalmer is about five hours from Jodhpur and Bikaner. Expect to pay 4,000 to 5,000 rupees ($55 to $65) for a cab from Jodhpur (we recommend stopping at Pokhran Fort along the way). Regular, inexpensive buses also run from Jodhpur to Jaisalmer; tickets cost around 500 rupees.

Indian Railways train is another option. There are trains from major cities such as Delhi, Jaipur, and Jodhpur. Two of the most prominent ones are the 14659 Runicha Express from Delhi (via Jaipur and Jodhpur), and the overnight 14810 Jodhpur Jaisalmer Express . You'll need to book well in advance.

Culture and Customs

Competition for tourist business is fierce in Jaisalmer, giving rise to the prevalence of touts and scams. You'll most likely be approached by someone wanting to provide their services or sell something outside the fort entrance, at the train and bus stations, and at the sand dunes. Touts can even be aboard buses from Jodhpur to Jaisalmer. Fortunately, locals have launched an anti-tout campaign to curb the harassment, but you should still be prepared to be firm in dealing with such people. Don't be swayed by their cheap prices for camel safaris and hotels, and don't believe it if they tell you your hotel has closed or burnt down. Touts and camel safari operators are also known to offer free accommodations on the Couchsurfing platform as a way of luring travelers in.

Conservative dress is most appropriate in Jaisalmer. It's respectful to keep your shoulders and legs covered. A shawl is handy to throw over a sleeveless top or dress.

Tipping isn't compulsory in India, although it's expected if you're happy with the service. A 10 to 15 percent tip is sufficient at a restaurant, or simply round the bill up on smaller amounts. Flag down the waiter to get your bill. Hotels will commonly have a tip box where you can leave gratuities for the staff.

Money Saving Tips

  • The fort is free to enter and never closes. Gadisar Lake is another free attraction.
  • You'll get hefty discounts from April to September if you can bear the heat.
  • Research thoroughly and bargain hard to avoid being ripped off, especially when doing touristy activities such as desert safaris.
  • Stay at a backpacker hostel such as Zostel.
  • Hire a scooter or motorbike for the day to reduce transportation costs. Backpacker hostels provide this service at a reasonable price.
  • Grab an unlimited Rajasthani thali (platter) for lunch. You'll be able to eat as much as you can for only a few dollars.

The city is often referred to as the "heart of Thar desert, Jaisalmer is an old town with stunning architecture.

A city that's come back almost from the dead over the last five decades, Jaisalmer might seem far away, but it's certainly not overlooked . 4 Places You Can't Miss On A Jodhpur To Jaisalmer Road Trip

Photo of Swati Jain

One of the most memorable journey which I took in the recent time is Jodhpur - Jaisalmer road trip. No doubt that this route is a perfect illustration of experiencing the real beauty of Rajasthan when you drive through Golden sand fields and periodic villages.

Photo of 4 Places You Can't Miss On A Jodhpur To Jaisalmer Road Trip 1/8 by Swati Jain

And exploring scenic yet lesser known places on your way can be an icing on the cake. Let me take you through 4 such places which I explored during this road trip:

Photo of 4 Places You Can't Miss On A Jodhpur To Jaisalmer Road Trip 2/8 by Swati Jain

Located at a distance of 9 KM from Jodhpur, Mandore is regarded as the former capital of Maharajas of Marwar, which was later abandoned for security reasons before moving to Mehrangarh Fort. It is said that before Jodhpur came into existence, the capital of Rathore clan of Rajputs that held sway over the Marwar region of Rajputana (early name of Rajasthan) was at Mandore (10 kms north of Jodhpur city).

It is believed that the ancient city was received as a dowry by a Rathore chief Chundaji who married a Parihar princess. Now this historic place is known for its garden, ancient temple and a ruined fort. The ruined Mandore fort, with its thick and tall walls was built in several stages and was once a fine piece of architecture. A huge ruined temple is a highlight of the fort. The outer wall of the temple depicts finely carved botanical designs, birds and animals. This place is a perfect seclusion from otherwise crowded city life.

Osian , also known as Osiyan is an ancient town which is located at a distance of 65 Kms on way to Jaisalmer. It is known for its ancient and ruined shrines which date back to centuries. It is said that the city of Osiyan was founded by Utpaladeva, a Rajput Prince belonging to Pratihara Dynasty and was named as Ukesha or Upkeshapur.

During the Pratihara dynasty, Osian is believed to be the major religious and cultural centre of the Mewar Kingdom. Major number of shrines got devastated with time; however the place is still left with few shrines that still unfold the royal legacy which the place had once. The architectural structures of Jain temple and Sachayi Mata are the sites in Osian, which is regarded as a prominent pilgrimage site for Oswal Jain community. Due to its erotic sculptures in few remains of the temples, Osian is also recognised as the " Khajuraho of Rajasthan"

Khichan Village

Photo of 4 Places You Can't Miss On A Jodhpur To Jaisalmer Road Trip 7/8 by Swati Jain

Khichan Village lies 150 km from Jodhpur in the northern part of the Thar Desert in Rajasthan. It is known as the village of ‘Migrating birds’ where you get to witness the unique symbolic existence of love between man and birds every year.

Photo of 4 Places You Can't Miss On A Jodhpur To Jaisalmer Road Trip 8/8 by Swati Jain

Welcomed with the mesmerising view of migrating birds flying high in the sky, Khichan comes alive every winter with the congregation of over 20,000 Demoiselle Cranes, who fly from their breeding grounds on the plains of Mongolia . These migrating birds arrive by end of August in Khichan and stay on till the end of March.

Ramdevra Temple

12 KM of Pokhran is a village called Ramdevra which falls under Jaisalmer district and has a temple which is dedicated to the saint Ramdevra who was considered to be the reincarnation of Lord Krishna by the Hindus. Ramdevra is apparently recognised as one place where you will spot abundant of Hindu and Muslim followers under one roof to pay respect to one deity who is believed to be a living form of god that worked towards equality and enrichment of human kinds. It is believed that Baba Ramdevji took Samadhi in 1459 A.D at the age of 33 and a temple was built around by King Ganga Singh of Bikaner in 1931 A.D. He was born as Ramdev in the household of Ajmalji in the Tomar Rajput. There is also Ramdeora Fair in Ramdevra which is held in the months of August and February and is attended by devotees in large numbers from all over India .

Jaisalmer railway station at dusk.

Onboard India's desert train: from Jodhpur to Jaisalmer

Travel deep into the Land of Kings on the adventurous passenger route from the ‘Blue City’ of Jodhpur to lesser-visited Jaisalmer, its gold-hued buildings set amid the devastating beauty of the desert.

Our train has barely begun to brake into the station when I hear the familiar sound of sandalled feet slapping on the ground followed by the excited cries of vendors passing baskets. Those who got off are now ambling towards the exit while the rest of us gather at the train’s doorways for a tussle with the passengers attempting to board. It’s 13 years since I first encountered the quirks of Indian railways and it feels like coming home. I’ve arrived in Jodhpur from Jaipur to embark upon a desert train adventure to Jaisalmer in the west of Rajasthan, not far from the Pakistan border, but I’ve got some time to kill before my connection, so set off to explore the blue-walled city.

On my last visit to Jodhpur, I bought pouches of pepper, rocks of quartz-like salt and sat around the medieval-style haveli courtyard at Khaas Bagh hotel eating silky mutton laal maans curry, smoking cinnamon beedi cigarettes and seeing little of the city beyond the showstopping, 15th-century Mehrangarh Fort, whose hulking mass of red sandstone towers above the city. So this time, I delve deeper into Jodhpur with a guide, Mahaveer Singh, who arrives in a beret and waistcoat, wearing a pair of ballooning black jodhpurs, tight to the knee. Expecting the clang of temple bells and rev of mopeds, I hear little but fat pigeons cooing in the archways as we wander around the old city’s indigo houses with their mint-green shutters, the alleys four-people wide. Mahaveer sets off down a passage of houses brighter than the sky, stopping briefly to rub at the cobalt-coloured paint with his fingers. “The foul smell of indigo keeps mosquitoes away,” he says, sharing that indigo pigment is produced by a herbal plant. All I can smell, however, is the aroma of pan-fried paratha bread.

Nailed to sandstone walls are Coca-Cola bottles cut in half to make vases, slapped with paint and filled with pink carnations, alongside cubby holes housing deities wrapped in silk that a passer-by stops to clean. Mostly inhabited by members of the Brahmin caste, there’s a strong sense of community here, with windows and doors left open and residents squatting in groups. “In the old cities, the elderly play cards and gossip — they know everyone and feel safe, so don’t want to move anywhere else,” explains Mahaveer. “Their children get married and go to the big cities, but they’ll stay,” he tells me, adding, “I’m born around Jodhpur, never left Jodhpur, never felt like leaving Jodhpur — but I know Jaisalmer is beautiful.”

Ghanta Gar, the old clock tower, is a popular landmark in the centre of Jodhpur’s Sardar Market.

At this moment, I don’t much feel like leaving Jodhpur either, having just begun to scratch beneath its facade, but my train is departing within the hour so we swing by Sardar Market to grab some fruit and snacks for the journey. At one end, queues are forming for makhaniya lassi (a fragrant yoghurt drink made with saffron and rose water) at Shri Mishrilal Hotel , carts are crushing sugar cane into juice and, at the other end, Ghanshyam Gawlani, the ‘omelette man’, is frying masala creamy cheese omelette sandwiches — crisp squares that ooze hot Amul cheese. Wrapping up two more for the train, I head back to Jodhpur Junction where the Jodhpur-Jaisalmer passenger special is yet to arrive. Travellers are perched on boxes or lying on the platform using bags as pillows and watching soaps on their phones. The digital carriage markers aren’t working, so I hover with the crowd, most of whom aren’t actually travelling but who have gathered for chats and that uniquely Indian descriptor, ‘timepass’. Then a cream engine roars into view and the platform galvanises into action: cartons are lifted onto heads, children are hauled by the wrists and polite but firm fingers poke into the backs of those in front of them to encourage them up the steps.

In the desert heat, my seat is already hot to the touch as a game of musical chairs ensues. However, with some raised palms and few nods, everyone shuffles around to accommodate one another. One passenger climbs up to his berth to watch a Hindi film on YouTube, leaving me the entire lower berth to stretch out on and enjoy unobstructed views from the window. Everything seems in order and on cue; a chaiwallah (tea-seller) calls out as he climbs aboard with his vat, followed by a second vendor selling ear pods, toy cricket sets and packets of moisture-wicking socks made in China. I’m often entertained by the tat touted on board, but today I glance down at my sockless feet in sweaty trainers and am thrilled to make a purchase. Two minutes and 100 rupees (£1) later, I pull my dry feet into a cross-legged position and get comfy by the window as the horn blares and the train pulls out of the station, past a flurry of lemon emigrant butterflies, scattered like confetti.

Fiery laal maans curry at Khaas Bagh restaurant, Jodhpur.

Within minutes, we’re clattering along the backs of houses, gathering pace as the warm breeze billows into a hot wind that tears at my hair and clothing, dust flying into my eyes. Pulling on a hat, I look out at camels tethered in backyards, coloured underwear clipped to washing lines and groups of women hoisting trays of bricks, their nose studs twinkling in the sun. Given its position, flung far into the western corner of Rajasthan, Jaisalmer isn’t as easily reachable as Udaipur, Jaipur and Jodhpur, common stops on most tours around the Land of Kings. There’s a dearth of fast, well-catered services covering this rail route, which makes the journey something of an exciting challenge — there’s no pantry car on board, few vendors and the seating is often unreserved. But six hours at an open window watching herders tend to their goats, tribal women sift grain in doorways and fields of flowering millet make it worth the dust and heat.

From the town of Mandore onwards, the scene turns rural: women with scythes appear from neck-high meadows, the monsoon having refreshed the thirsty ground. We pass huts shaped like mushrooms, children swinging on tyres tied to trees and village mandirs — small white temples — with single flags on top. An elderly man wearing a traditional pagri turban boards and begins to busk on a ravanhatha — a stringed wooden instrument — that brings my neighbour down from his berth to offer money. Abhishek Sharma is a 24-year-old from Ayodhya working as an engineer for the Indian Air Force, which has a base at Phalodi, en route. His work is secret and he won’t tell me what he does, but he enjoys the journey from his parents’ home to work: “Here you have different views, different culture, different food — and I make friends,” he says, pulling out his phone to find me on Instagram. “But this isn’t a tourist train. Tourists aren’t often travelling on this long, hot train. They take the sleeper. You’re unusual.” I glance around. There are no other tourists on the train — certainly no foreign tourists at least — the majority of passengers seem to be members of the air force, dressed in khaki and heavy boots. Abhishek shifts up to the window and points at the abundance of star-shaped purple flowers I’m admiring along the track. “Very beautiful. It’s like a rubber tree, used for worshipping Shiva, but if you get the liquid in your eyes, you’ll go blind.” I make a mental note to look but not touch.

A harmonium player entertains visitors to Gadsisar Lake, Jaisalmer.

For a couple of hours, there’s a lull as the late-afternoon heat overwhelms everyone. All I can see are the soles of feet flopped to the side. Saris are draped over heads. Limp arms swing in the aisles. Grateful for my omelette sandwiches, still warm, I sit down on the steps in the open doorway and watch the empty landscape pass by, stony, thorny and still. No wind, no movement, just sand and sunshine, and our train cutting through the silence. We pass an unmanned crossing where motorbikes wait at the edges, toddlers wearing anklets and eyeliner clinging to mothers sitting sideways. A passenger leans out over my head to make a call and I wander back to my seat, only six of us left in the carriage as we near the final destination.

Outside, the ground has turned to gold, the shadows of cacti growing longer as the sun begins to drop down in the sky, swirling like an eye behind a cloud. The sense of arrival stirs the sleeping bodies as the train begins to belt across the desert, wind beating through the windows. The butterflies are in a frenzy, the birds chirping wildly and a couple of peacocks scarper up the dunes, raking tracks with their tails. On we go, the wheels thudding as sunset begins, the air shimmering and the ridges of Jaisalmer Fort rising into view. And for a brief moment, everything turns to gold: the sand, the light, the skies. Then we slow down, and with a wail and a hiss, we glide into Jaisalmer station and jerk to a halt. Passengers amble off the train, Abhishek waves from the footbridge, and I hop down the steps, ready to embrace the next adventure.

Families walk around the morning fruit and vegetable market in Jaisalmer.

How to do it: Tailor-made travel specialists Hayes & Jarvis offer two nights at The Rohet House in Jodhpur, train travel, two nights in Jaisalmer, and walking tours of both cities, starting at £690 per person, as an add-on to longer itineraries like the 15-day luxury tour of Rajasthan, from £3,299 per person, including two nights at the Leela Palace Hotel Jaipur. Where Should I go: Jodhpur or Jaisalmer?

Jodhpur is a city in the Rajasthan state of India. This city is located on the outskirts of the Thar Desert and is known for having sunshine almost every day of the year. Rao Jodha, an ancient Rajput chief, founded the city in 1459 AD. Many of the houses in the city are shades of blue, hence the reason that the city is sometimes referred to as the Blue City.

Jaisalmer is located in western part of the Rajasthan state of India. The city is known as the "Golden City" for its Sonar Qila, or 'Golden Fort'. This fort is different than other forts in India in that it is a living fort, meaning that it contains many hotels, homes, and shops for locals and visitors. The city is very close to the Thar Desert, to which excursions can be made.
