The Virgin Atlantic responsible travel checklist

virgin travel checklist

If you love to travel and care about the planet, our responsible travel checklist can help you lower the impact you make when you set out to explore the world.

As a travel company, we believe we have a responsibility to care for the planet and its people. We’re also aware that flying is a carbon-intensive industry and that tourism poorly done can have negative consequences. These are things we’re trying incredibly hard to address, and we’re making significant progress. But on top of the big-ticket items, there are lots of small things we can all do to make a difference and to ensure that we tread lightly on our travels.

What is responsible travel?

virgin travel checklist

First and foremost, responsible travel is a mindset. Begin by understanding that travel is intrinsically good. It broadens your horizons, gives you a better view of the world and a greater understanding of its different cultures. Travel and tourism are essential for the economies of the places we visit. They connect the world, enable business, generate jobs and redistribute wealth. They can also help protect wild places such as game parks and coral reefs that would otherwise be exploited and depleted.

So, we shouldn’t stop travelling, but we do need to appreciate all its consequences. That means we should all do a bit more to reduce our impact; on the planet, on the people who live in the places we visit, their culture and their environment. It’s also about giving them a reason to protect it themselves. It’s about protecting the world for future generations and encouraging others to do the same.

Before you travel

virgin travel checklist

Lighter luggage equals lesser emissions.

Do your research. Spend your money with operators that work with local communities, employ local staff, pay decent wages, dispose of their waste correctly and are sensitive to local cultural heritage. We work with our hoteliers and tourism partners to improve against all areas of our Responsible Supplier Policy. Pick an airline with a modern fleet of twin-engine jets. One that cares. One that has a robust sustainability programme and has cut its emissions by 20% in the last ten years. An airline like Virgin Atlantic!

Watch your weight.  packing lighter for your trip will, in turn, save on fuel use and resultant carbon emissions. If all our passengers reduced the weight of their bag by 1kg, we could save around 4,000 tonnes of CO2 each year – that’s equivalent to the annual emissions of around 1,500 average cars.

Trains, planes and automobiles.  Think about travel options to and from the airport. Most airports are well connected to public transport links.

Bring your own.  fill up your reusable water bottle at the airport to save plastic waste, and have it refilled onboard.

Offset your flight. You can visit virginatlantic.com/changeisintheair/offset to use our carbon calculator. You’ll be able to offset the whole of your flight or simply make a contribution. Funds raised through offsetting help support projects around the world to reduce carbon.

virgin travel checklist

Our amenity kits are the most sustainable in the air, but can be reused if you leave them sealed.

Reduce your use. Only open items you really need. Anything which remains sealed, such as blankets and amenity kits, will be reused. Other items are refurbished or recycled by our partner MNH Sustainable Cabin Services.

Reuse your glass. In our onboard announcement, you’ll hear us asking you to consider keeping your plastic glass refilled during the flight rather than asking for a new one each time. This will reduce plastic wastage – each glass not used saves 5g of plastic.

Help us out. Recycling onboard is tricky, and we have stringent rules over what we can and cannot do. Keep your waste separate (for example, don’t stuff your drinks can with other rubbish). This will increase the likelihood that we can recycle things.

Go veggie. Reducing your meat consumption is one of the easiest ways to reduce your own carbon footprint – try one of our tasty vegetarian options onboard. And through our Thoughtful Food programme, we’re working with our caterers to meet challenging sustainability criteria, such as sourcing fairly traded products, promoting higher animal welfare standards, and sourcing sustainably certified fish, seafood, soy and palm oil.

At your destination

virgin travel checklist

Take only photographs, leave only footprints.

Reduce plastic waste. Always carry that water bottle that you bought with you. Plus, take along some reusable cutlery to use at street food stores instead of plastic. Carrying a reusable shopping bag is also a good idea.

Live like a local. Eat, drink and shop locally. Use local forms of public transport too. You’ll reduce your carbon footprint, help support the local economy and learn so much more about the country you’re visiting.

Spend your money at locally-owned shops and restaurants rather than multinational chains. Buy souvenirs direct from local craftspeople. Use local guides for excursions. The idea here is to make sure the money you spend benefits the local community.

Go explore . Grab a map and walk or cycle instead of taking a taxi. You’ll be amazed at what you’ll discover!

Be aware of animal exploitation. Travel can be a great way to develop your love of nature and see animals you might not see at home. Be mindful that what might look good at first sight might not be in the animals’ best interest. Research is your best tool to make sure the animals are not being exploited for tourists. Avoid anything that involves feeding or touching wild animals. And definitely don’t eat endangered species or buy illegal-trade animal souvenirs, such as items made from elephant ivory or coral.

Leave only footprints. If you see a piece of litter, pick it up. Take shopping bags with you. If you’re self-catering or planning on making packed lunches, think about taking your own containers too. Take things a step further and join a beach clean; you’ll meet some like-minded people and hang out on a beach for a couple of hours.

Conserve water. The average hotel guest uses more than 200 litres of water every day. Conserve water where you can.

Respect regional cultures and religions, adhere to local dress codes and always ask before taking someone’s photograph.

Be aware of history. Most of the world was at one time or another affected by colonisation. Understand how the past has shaped the places you’re visiting and accept that your knowledge is incomplete. That will make travel more rewarding for you and for the people that host you.

virgin travel checklist

If you’re lucky enough to be enjoying the beach and swimming at one of our gorgeous Caribbean destinations, please take a few minutes to read our blog about responsible swimming . It’s full of great tips and advice about how you can minimise your impact on these fragile ecosystems (without taking away any of the fun).

When you get home

virgin travel checklist

Being a responsible traveller doesn’t stop when you get on the plane to come home. Be a responsible travel evangelist. Talk about it. Inspire others. Leave good reviews for the responsibly run shops and restaurants you’ve found on your trip. And then plan your next trip to be even more awesome and responsible than the last one.

Medical conditions and fitness to fly

What you need to know before flying with a medical condition and what to do if you need to travel with  medication or medical devices.

In some cases you may need medical clearance before you can fly, this may be because you have a pre-existing medical condition or if you are travelling overseas to receive medical treatment.

On this page

virgin travel checklist

Fitness to fly

We want you to be as comfortable as possible on your flight, and medical clearance ensures your doctor is satisfied you’re able to take your journey as planned. It’s covered by clause 14 of our  Conditions of Carriage.

To confirm your fitness to fly, our Special Assistance team may request a copy of our Medical Information Form (MEDIF) or a detailed fit to fly letter.

virgin travel checklist

Part one of the Medical Information Form is for you to fill out and your doctor should complete part two. You'll then need to send the form to our Special Assistance team.

We'll assess your fitness to fly based on the international criteria set out by the  World Health Organisation , to ensure you travel safely and travel well.

Our medical team may request additional information to confirm your fitness to fly. If they determine that additional in-flight services are required (such as travelling with a medical escort or  supplementary oxygen ), we can put you in touch with partners that offer these services*.

*A fee is required for in-flight services provided by our partners, such as a medical escort or supplementary oxygen.

More information about travelling with a medical condition

Medical conditions affected by flying.

Certain medical conditions can be affected by flying, and may require medical clearance, which is written confirmation from your doctor that you are well enough to fly. These conditions include:

Heart or blood vessel problems such as a heart attack, heart failure, angina or stroke.

Deep Vein Thrombosis

Breathing difficulties such as chronic bronchitis or emphysema, pneumothorax (a collapsed lung), pulmonary embolism (a blood clot on the lung), or asthma, especially if you may need additional oxygen or use of a nebuliser during your flight

- Epilepsy  - A recent head injury  - Stomach or bowel problems  - Cancer  - A current infectious disease  - Ear or sinus pain  - Limb injuries, including fractures  - Psychiatric problems  - Any recent surgery

For passengers suffering from conditions like heart or lung disease, or blood disorders such as anaemia (including sickle cell anaemia), the lower oxygen levels in the cabin could lead to oxygen deprivation (hypoxia), making additional oxygen supplies necessary.

Additionally, the lower air pressure means that air within the cabin is expanded by about 30%. This could cause problems for passengers who have recently undergone surgery, have abdominal health problems, or blocked ears or sinuses.

If you are affected by any of these conditions, you should check your doctor is happy for you to fly. You should also check with our Special Assistance team in case you require official medical clearance from your doctor before you can fly.

Communicable and contagious diseases

We’re naturally keen to prevent our passengers from falling ill, so have guidelines for travelling with certain conditions.

If you’ve been unwell in the weeks before your flight, please contact our Special Assistance team to check if you’ll be OK to fly.

As the following illnesses can be contagious, we’ve put together some guidance on when you can travel with them. If you are unsure, please contact our Special Assistance department so your individual case can be assisted and supported.

As long as you feel well enough to fly, it’s fine for you to travel with these conditions:

- Hepatitis B or C  - Dengue fever  - Viral meningitis  - Malaria

Pregnancy and flying

As long as you haven’t experienced any complications during your pregnancy, you can fly until your 28th week without needing to tell us. Beyond the 28th week, you’ll need to take note of the guidelines below.

Single pregnancy

If you're expecting one baby and want to travel between your 28th and 36th weeks, we’ll need you to travel with a certificate from your doctor. The certificate should state that you have had no complications and your estimated delivery date. We don’t need to see this in advance, but it might be asked for at the airport or onboard. Travel may be delayed or denied if you do not have this if asked.

It's important to remember to include your return travel within these dates.

Multiple pregnancy

If you're expecting more than one baby and want to travel between your 28th and 32nd weeks, again you'll need to travel with a doctor's certificate stating you've had no complications and your estimated delivery date. Travel may be delayed or denied if you don't have your certificate available if asked.

You mustn't fly after the end of your 32nd week. Please do remember to include your return travel date in this time frame.

Contact our Special Assistance team

You can contact our Special Assistance team here if you need to discuss this information in more detail, or if you need to let us know about:

- A complicated pregnancy  - A recent Caesarean Section delivery  - A recent miscarriage.

We’re alert to the dangers of serious allergies.

If you have any kind of allergy, simply follow these guidelines for a safe and comfortable flight:

- If you have an allergy that could result in an anaphylactic reaction you should carry your medication, such as antihistamines or an Epi-Pen, in your hand luggage. Check our information on bringing medication onboard.

- If you’ve had an allergic reaction in the last 30 days, please contact our Special Assistance team . If you need a specific meal, take a look at our dietary requirements information and make sure you let us know at least 24 hours before your flight.

- Just in case we can’t meet your dietary requirements, we recommend you bring your own snacks onboard.

Our nut and allergen policy

We adhere to allergen guidance under European and UK food legislation, which may be different in other jurisdictions. The allergens declared refer to the ingredients only, the food items may contain traces of allergens since they are processed on or with equipment that processes products that may contain allergens.

We cannot guarantee the absence of food allergen or peanut traces in our meals, both on board and at the airport.  A list of food allergens contained in meals served on flights departing from the UK and USA is available on board from your Cabin Crew.

Our suppliers are based all around the world and not every country has the same legal requirements for providing allergen information. On flights to the UK, allergen labelling on pre-packaged items may not reflect all of the allergens required to be declared in the UK. For passengers flying from the USA, we also adhere to the three additional Nuts listed under US Allergen advisory information.

Peanuts are never knowingly included in any of our meals on board. However, our meals are not produced in a nut-free environment so may contain traces.

All other nuts may also be served on our flights to other passengers as part of the menu ingredients and/or the snack service, in any cabin. We also can’t stop other passengers from bringing (or eating) their own food onboard, which may include nuts.

In view of the above, we strongly encourage passengers to take all necessary precautions to prepare for the possibility of inadvertent exposure.

Other situations that will prevent you from flying

Please take note of the following situations. You cannot fly if:

- You have been SCUBA diving within 48 hours prior to your flight

- You’ve had a general anaesthetic or dental treatment within 48 hours prior to your flight

Prescription medication

If you need to fly with any controlled medication that has been prescribed for you by a doctor or other medical practitioner, there are a number of restrictions and guidelines you need to be aware of.

Tips for travelling with prescription medication

  • The medication should be in its original packaging, pharmaceutically labelled to clearly identify it as being prescribed for, and belonging to you.
  • Your medication should be carefully packed in your check in baggage and placed in the hold where the temperature is between 4-5°C
  • Pack three or four days of medication in your hand baggage in case you need it during the flight, or your check in baggage is delayed or lost.
  • Carry a repeat prescription so your medication can be replaced if if lost or damaged, or you need to top up your supply while away.
  • Make sure you have a letter from your medical practitioner confirming the type of medication (including the generic drug name), with prescribed doses, and details of any other medical items required, such as syringes or EpiPens.
  • Some medication may contain ingredients that are illegal in some countries, even if it has been prescribed by your doctor. It’s a good idea to check with the UK embassy at your destination.
  • Over-the-counter medicines (such as headache tablets) are fine to bring as long as they are legal in your destination country and you keep them in their original packaging.

Keeping your medication cold

The onboard fridge cannot be used to keep medication cold. However, if you bring a cool bag the crew will be happy to top it up with ice.

Liquid medication

Increased security at UK airports affects the amount of liquid medication that you can take in hand baggage.

For the latest airport security advice on carrying liquid medication, please check your airport’s website or  The Department of Transport .

There’s also more information on liquids on our own  liquid restrictions  page.

Travelling with an assistant or medical escort

Depending on your level of mobility or independence, you may choose to travel with an assistant or medical escort to help you during your journey.

Occasionally we ask passengers with severe medical conditions to travel with a medically qualified escort.

Your assistant must travel in the same class of cabin as you and they will be seated where’s best for you, either directly in front, next to or behind you.

You can discuss your requirements with our Special Assistance team.

More information about travelling with an assistant or medical escort

Administering medication on board.

Assistants or medical escorts that need to administer medication must be suitably qualified and will need to:

  • Carry all necessary medication and equipment required during the flight.
  • Carry appropriate identification and documentation and a medical kit to justify the purpose of their travel and to satisfy any security measures.
  • Adequately secure and lock medical kit bags.
  • Ensure medical equipment required during the flight is battery operated and cleared for use onboard prior to travel. Please see our information on carrying medical equipment onboard.
  • Assist in the evacuation of their patient during an emergency situation.

How much help the cabin crew can offer you

If you would need assistance with eating, medication or in the toilet during your flight, you should travel with a companion who can help you. Our cabin crew are not permitted to provide this kind of assistance.

If you are travelling alone, our cabin crew can help you from your seat to the toilet with the use of our onboard aisle wheelchair. The cabin crew are unable to assist with medication and eating, however they are able to open packaging (such as a bag of our onboard pretzels) for you.

If an adult passenger is unable to understand or respond to safety instructions (for reasons other than language barriers), our Special Assistance team might ask for more information to make sure the passenger is OK to travel alone.

Please contact our Special Assistance team in plenty of time so they can give clearance to travel if necessary.

Emergency situations during the flight

If you would have severe difficulties in emergency situations, we may ask you to travel with a safety assistant.

This person would need to be willing and able to physically help you in an emergency, but they do not need any official qualification or training.

Our stretcher policy

We do not permit stretchers to be used or carried onboard our aircrafts.

Flying with medical equipment

By 'medical equipment', we mean items like respiratory assistive devices including CPAP machines, needles and syringes. For specific guidance on bringing wheelchairs and other mobility equipment onboard, see  help with mobility .

Some medical equipment can be brought onboard, but you’ll need to make sure it complies with restrictions.

Needles and syringes

You’re allowed to bring needles and syringes onboard for the treatment of medical conditions. However, please make sure you also carry a letter from your medical practitioner confirming the kind of medication you have, and what it is for.

If you don't have a medical practitioner's letter, the medication must have a printed pharmaceutical label, clearly identifying it as being prescribed for and belonging to you.

Powered equipment

We can’t provide electricity to power medical equipment on our aircraft, so your equipment will need to be battery powered.

Guidelines for the use of batteries

  • Ensure you carry sufficient batteries for the duration of your flight.
  • Batteries must be fitted in the device if you check it into the aircraft hold.
  • Spare batteries must be individually wrapped and carried in hand luggage only.
  • Just like personal stereos and phones, any powered medical equipment must be switched off and stowed for taxi, take off, approach and landing, and during abnormal or emergency conditions.

More information about powered medical equipment

Respiratory assistive devices.

The following guidelines apply to any respiratory assistive devices you wish to bring onboard:

  • It must be labelled by the manufacturer, confirming it has been tested to meet the requirements for medical portable devices set by the UK Government or US Federal Aviation Authority.
  • The device must not be too big or too heavy to be used in the cabin.
  • Any extra batteries must be packaged in accordance with UK safety regulations.
  • You must carry sufficient fully-charged batteries to power the device for 150% of the expected maximum flight duration, to take any delays into account.
  • You may also need to carry a medical certificate for the condition that requires you to use the device.
  • We no longer carry therapeutic oxygen onboard, so if you anticipate needing  a POC (Personal Oxygen Concentrator) device with you, check out our information in the below section.

Portable Oxygen Concentrators

We no longer provide therapeutic medical oxygen on board, and Personal Oxygen Cylinders aren't approved for use on our flights.

However, if you own or rent a Portable Oxygen Concentrator (POC), these can be used on board, provided they have been approved. Please complete our  POC Approval and Battery Approval Request  form, and fax or email it to our oxygen provider  OxygenToGo®  at least 48 hours before your flight.

If you booked your flight with us, but it's operated by one of our partner airlines, please contact them directly for their policy regarding medical oxygen.

What you need to know when bringing a POC on our flights:

  • You won't be able to sit in an exit row or bulkhead seat
  • Your POC does not count toward your carry-on baggage limit
  • If you're planning to use it on the flight, your POC must have 150% of battery life for the duration of your flight(s) eg. For a 6 hour flight, you'll need 9 hours of battery power
  • To comply with airline safety policy, please don’t bring more than the battery requirement
  • The battery should be removed and packaged separately if not in use
  • It should have a recessed battery terminal, and the packaged battery terminals should not contact any metal objects

We may also need more info about your medical condition to make sure you're ok to fly.

You can ask us a question or let us know about the medical equipment you need to bring on your flight by completing this online  contact form .

The Special Assistance team might need to ask you a few questions about your medical condition.

The Ultimate Virgin Voyages Packing List

Trying to figure out what to pack for a Virgin Voyages cruise? You’ve come to the right place!

Ahoy there, fellow sailors! If you’re anything like me, you’re already dreaming about your next Virgin Voyages cruise. But before you set sail, follow my Virgin Voyages Packing List to make sure you’ve got everything you need.

As a frequent traveler and recent Virgin Voyages sailor, I’ve got some insider tips that will help you prepare for adventure. From famous Scarlet Night to the infamous Virgin Voyages dress code (or lack-thereof), I cover it all.

Also, be sure to bookmark my other Virgin Voyages travel guides for future reading .

The ultimate Virgin Voyages Packing List

Note : This article may contain affiliate links. As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases through these links, at no cost to you. But don’t worry, I only share products I’d truly recommend to a friend.

As with any cruise, your Virgin Voyages packing list will vary slightly depending on the route, time of year, sailing length, and weather. But in this ultimate Virgin Voyages packing list, you’ll find the essentials you can’t forget on any cruise, whether you’re sailing on the iconic Scarlet Lady, Valiant Lady, Resilient Lady, or Brilliant Lady.

Virgin Voyages Packing List Essentials

1. something red.

The Virgin Voyages Scarlet Night is one of the most iconic events on board . While you’re not required to wear red, its more fun if you do. Since there isn’t a dress code on board Virgin Voyages boats, you can wear anything from an old red tee shirt to a floor-length dress.

Scarlet Night Outfit

My Scarlet Night outfit doubled as a port day outfit while exploring San Juan, Puerto Rico

If you’re like me and you don’t own anything red, head to a thrift store or quickly order something online ( peruse red outfits on Amazon here ). Personally, I grabbed a red crop top at a thrift store in Miami and paired it with a black denim skirt and my favorite travel sandals ( these ones ). My goofy husband wore a red satin button-down shirt (several sizes too small) that he found at the same thrift shop. We expected more people to be wearing silly outfits, but he was the only one outside of the crew.

What to Wear on Virgin Voyages Travel Guide

2. Pajamas

Another event on board is the Virgin Voyages Pajama Party. You’ll want to have some pajamas to wear—whether they’re your actual pajamas, or something you buy ahead of time specifically for the cruise ( check Amazon options here ). As with Scarlet Night, the Virgin Voyages dress code is casual and varied. You’ll see couples in brand-new matching pajamas sets ( like these ), as well as plenty of people in regular clothing. If you want to go all out, figure out your pajama outfit ahead of time. But if you don’t care to dress in pajamas, you won’t be the only one.

PS: I have several pajama recommendations in my Virgin Voyages Dress Code article.

3. Travel insurance

While something red and pajamas are optional, travel insurance is something you absolutely need. Although you can expect things to go smoothly when you’re on your cruise, you never know when you might have an unexpected flight delay on your way, lost luggage in the airport, or an emergency while exploring a port city.

SafetyWing is my go-to insurance whether I’m living abroad or just spending a week or two on vacation. Their policies covers travel delays, lost checked luggage, natural disasters, personal liability, and dozens of adventure sports. Planning to rent a scooter on Cozumel or go canyoneering in the Dominican Republic? Make sure you choose a travel insurance policy like SafetyWing. It’s a small price to pay for a stress-free and enjoyable cruise.

4. Digital necessities

Unlike most other cruise lines, Virgin Voyages has free wifi (woohoo!). However, if you want to stream or download music or videos, you have to pay extra. Because of this, I highly recommend downloading music and shows ahead of time. You’ll thank yourself later!

Before you leave for your cruise, you should also figure out if you’ll need cell phone coverage in the port cities you’re visiting. Some phone plans include international coverage, and others don’t. If your plan doesn’t include the countries you’re visiting, you have three options: (1) upgrade your plan with your current carrier, (2) purchase a temporary eSIM through Airalo , or (3) plan to explore without phone coverage.

Whichever option you choose, I recommend downloading the local map on the Google Maps app, and downloading the local language on the Google Translate app if you don’t speak the language. If you download these two things correctly, you will be able to access the local map and Google Translate without data or wifi.

Virgin Voyages Packing List Essentials

Beautiful balcony views on the Valiant Lady (perfect spot to read a book!)

5. Kindle or book

Very few things are as idyllic as the experience of immersing yourself in a book while soaking in the sun on vacation. Whether you’re a frequently reader at home or not, a cruise is a great time to start (and finish) a new book. I recently invested in a Kindle and its changed the game for me. No more carrying around heavy books or squinting to see in dim light. Plus, you can switch between numerous books without adding any weight to your suitcase. Make sure you download your books before boarding the cruise, unless you want to pay extra for a wifi upgrade.

Virgin Voyages Spa Blog

6. headphones

Headphones are a must for me, for both exercise and lounging. Certain areas of the ship can get loud, and if you want to block out the noise, you can pop in some noise-cancelling AirPods and play some of your downloaded songs. Also, if you want to take advantage of the ship’s stunning upper deck track or gym, you’ll probably want to listen to your own music.

7. Tote bag or Backpack

You need some sort of bag to carry your belongings around the ship (and of course on port days). I prefer a simple tote bag to bring my Kindle, phone, headphones, and water bottle with me around the ship, but a small backpack works as well.

7. Sunglasses (plus extras!)

Sunglasses are a must have item for almost any cruise. I always bring two pairs, just in case a lose one. Plus, it can be fun to have several pairs to choose from!

My favorite sunglasses are SOJOS . They’re affordable (usually under $20), fairly good quality, cute, and always fit my small face surprisingly well (and my husband’s face too). I always have a pair of their vintage round frames , plus a second pair .

Virgin Voyage Packing List for Clothes

Don’t forget a few bathing suits (essential item in my Virgin Voyages Packing List)

Virgin Voyages Scarlet Night

Everything turns red on Scarlet Night!

9. Clothing

The amount of clothing you bring on your cruise depends on the length of your sailing, and your own personal preference. For this article, I’m going to assume you’re heading on an 8-day cruise, but this list would also work for a shorter cruise if you want plenty of clothing options. I’m also assuming you’re headed somewhere warm, since most of Virgin’s current routes sail through warmer climates.

What to Wear on a Virgin Voyages Cruise

Virgin voyages clothing packing list women.

  • 1 comfy tee shirt
  • 5 tank tops and short sleeve tops
  • 2 athletic tops
  • 3 bathing suits
  • 1 pair of jeans or flowy pants
  • 1 pair of jean shorts
  • 1 pair of comfy shorts
  • 1 pair of athletic shorts
  • 3 pairs of socks
  • 10 pairs of underwear
  • 1 sports bra
  • 1 regular bra

Virgin Voyages Clothing Packing List Men

  • 4 tee shirts
  • 3 button-up shirts (casual and fancy)
  • 2 athletic shirts
  • 2 pairs of swim trunks
  • 1 pair of jeans
  • 2 pairs of shorts
  • 5 pairs of socks
  • 8 pairs of underwear

What is the Virgin Voyages Dress code?

Short answer: Virgin Voyages does not have a dress code. But read my full article on the topic for more info about what to wear!

Don’t forget shoes! From fancy dinners and sea days by the pool to adventurous excursions and foot tours of foreign cities, you’ll want to a variety of footwear without overpacking. I only brought three pairs of shoes on my Virgin Voyages cruise, and it was perfect for me.

Virgin Voyages Cruise Shoe Packing List for Women

These are the exact shoes I brought on my Virgin Voyages cruise. I would 100% bring these three again.

1 — Arizona Essentials Plastic Birkenstock Sandals : These comfy plastic Birks have replaced my flip flops! Since they’re plastic, they work well for days by the pool and at the beach, but are also comfortable enough to walk in all day. ( Buy here ).

2 — Glenda Platform Birkenstock Sandals : Another comfy pair of Birkenstocks that can easily be dressed up for a fancy dinner, worn around the ship, or in a port city. I love how comfy, cute, and versatile these shoes are! ( Buy here ).

3 — Trail Runners/Tennis Shoes : If you plan on going on any hikes or adventures on shore, or working out on the ship, be sure bring some comfy sneakers. Altra Lone Peak trail runners are my go-to shoes since they’re compact, comfortable, and great for hiking.

Other comfy and cute shoes for your cruise: Reef Water Vista Waterproof Sandals , Mayari Birkenstock Sandals , Plastic Thong Birkenstock Sandals , and Classic Arizona Birkenstock Sandals . (Can you tell I’m a fan of Birks?)

Virgin Voyages Cruise Shoe Packing List for Men

My husband wishes he just packed two pairs of shoes. Here is his ideal cruise packing list for shoes:

1 — Mens Arizona Essentials Plastic Sandals : These shoes are so versatile and comfy! They are perfect for exploring a port city, spending a day at the beach, wandering around the ship, or even wearing to dinner. ( Buy here ).

2 — Running Shoes : Versatile running shoes for a morning run around the beautiful top-deck track, or for exploring a rainy port city. He also loves his Altra Lone Peak trail runners .

11. Toiletries

All Virgin Voyages cabins have soap, shampoo, conditioner, and body wash. I’m happy to use the provided body wash and hand soap, but always pack my own shampoo and conditioner. My recommended toiletry packing list for Virgin Voyages cruises includes:

Toiletry Basics

Shampoo Bar & Container : Solid shampoo bars help cut down on liquids and space when traveling. I love Bambu shampoo bars and use both them at home and while traveling. They’re the only shampoo bars I’ve found that don’t leave my hair feeling thick and full of buildup. ( Buy Bambu shampoo bar four pack , buy Bambu shampoo bar single bar ). Bonus: I always keep my shampoo bar in this handy container !

Face Wash Bar : After having such a good experience with shampoo bars, I recently started using a face wash bar. Like shampoo bars, face bars cut down on extra liquid and space in your bag. Plus, they’re more cost effective than regular face wash in my experience. ( Buy natural vegan shampoo bar ).

Toothbrush, Toothpaste & Floss: Don’t forget your dental essentials! Since I travel full time, I bring my normal toothbrush, which is a Burst electric toothbrush in lavender . My husband has a Burst brush in Black , so we just bring one charger when we travel to save space in our bags.

Deodorant : My favorite cost-effective natural deodorant is Arm & Hammer Essentials (unscented) .

Sunscreen : Make sure to pack your favorite sunscreen. I use Innisfree face sunscreen and a body sunscreen.

Dramamine or other sea sickness medicine : Since Virgin Voyages boats are so new, you may not need dramamine , but its better to pack it just in case.

12. My personal Essentials

Besides the other essentials on this list, I have a few items I won’t travel without, including:

1 — Jewelry organizer : I finally found the perfect travel jewelry organizer and I can’t go anywhere without it now! It keeps my necklaces from tangling and fits plenty of earrings, rings, and bracelets. Plus, it takes up very little room in my bag. ( Buy here ).

2 — Mirrorless camera : I used to travel with a DSLR but it was so heavy! I recently switched to a mirrorless Sony A7 III and I’ll never go back. I also bring a Sigma 24-70mm 2.8 lens , which is light and versatile, making it perfect for travel.

13. Optional: two bottles of wine

You can’t bring food or drinks on board, but you can bring two bottles of wine to store in your room. If you like wine and want to save a little on drinks during your cruise, take advantage of this rule!

Virgin Voyages Port Day Essentials

Reusable water bottle.

A reusable water bottle is a must for port days, and can be useful on board as well. Lots of people like HydroFlasks , but my personal preference is a Miir Narrow Mouth Bottle because they are easier to drink from, a little lighter, and less expensive.

If you plan to do any sort of adventure activities during your port days—like snorkeling or canyoneering or scuba diving—I highly recommend investing in a GoPro. I have the GoPro Hero 11 and I love it.

It’s always a good idea to have some cash, no matter where you go. I always bring a few twenty dollar bills regardless of what country I’m in (it’s really come in handy a few times!) If I’m spending more than a day in a different country, I always bring local currency as well. But since cruise port days are so short, I typically just bring U.S. dollars and if I need to, I get some local currency out at an ATM.

A good day pack is a must for cruise port days. I prefer to bring a large fanny pack like this one from Cotopaxi. It fits my phone, wallet, chapstick, snacks and even a small water bottle. If I need more supplies, I’ll bring a small backpack.

Prohibited Items and Things to Leave at Home

There are a few things that you should not bring on a Virgin Voyages cruise. Make sure to leave these unnecessary and/or prohibited items at home.

★ Food and drinks (besides two wine bottles) : Other than two wine bottles, you can’t bring any food or drinks on board a Virgin Voyages cruise. Unfortunately, this means that you can’t bring your own snacks. It also means that you technically can’t buy something edible (like chocolate) in a port city and bring it on board. However, I did end up buying chocolate in the Dominican Republic and no one took it from me when I boarded the boat. Thankfully, all Virgin Voyages cruises are all-inclusive (and vegan-friendly ), so you’ll have all the food and snacks you’ll need on board.

★ Curling irons : You can’t bring curling irons on board, but you can bring straighteners.

★ Laptop : Laptops are allowed on board, but I would recommend leaving yours at home. My husband and I typically travel with a laptop in case we want to watch shows, but you have to pay extra to stream shows. Plus, Virgin Voyages’ cabins have TVs with plenty of free movies and shows preloaded.

Virgin Australia has suspended its direct service from Adelaide to Bali after a delay in the delivery of 10 new Boeing MAX planes.

Travellers keen to head to the hotspot from the Aussie city won’t be able to do so between April 28 and June 9 as the airline awaits the delivery of the new aircraft.

Virgin Australia suspends flights from Adelaide to Bali from April 28 to June 9.

Holiday-makers can still fly from Adelaide to Bali — but will now have a travel time up to 14 hours as the aircraft will have to go via Brisbane, Sydney or Melbourne and transfer to a connecting flight.

The move comes after a delay in the delivery of 10 new Boeing MAX planes.

Those who have booked a flight during the impacted period will be contacted directly by the airline or their travel agent to provide alternative arrangements or “be offered a full refund”, the airline said.

“We have made the decision to continue suspension of direct Adelaide-Bali services from June 2024 due to various factors including the delayed delivery of new aircraft,” a Virgin Australia spokesperson told enews.com.au.

“We acknowledge this decision will be disappointing for some guests and we sincerely apologise for any inconvenience.

Adelaide Airport’s plan to bring back direct international flights

“Guests booked to travel between Adelaide and Bali from June onwards will be directly contacted by Virgin Australia or their travel agent to provide alternative arrangements, including connecting flights to and from Bali on the booked day of travel via Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne. Where an alternative is not suitable, guests will be offered a full refund.”

News.com.au understands the suspension of the route is to manage impacts to the airline’s international and domestic schedule as a result of the delayed delivery of new aircraft.

“Guests who wish to discuss alternative arrangements available to them, including travelling via an alternate port, are encouraged to reach out to the Virgin Australia Guest Contact Centre on 13 67 89,” the spokesperson continued.

Meanwhile, Jetstar operates up to 14 direct flights a week between Adelaide and Denpasar.

CLEVELAND, Ohio — James Karinchak was spotted in the Guardians clubhouse ahead of Thursday’s series finale against Boston at Progressive Field. The right-hander has been on the 60-day injured list since March 28 as he continues to recover from shoulder soreness that he experienced in spring training.

Manager Stephen Vogt said Karinchak will travel during the upcoming six-game road trip to Atlanta and Houston under the watchful eye of Guardians trainers and coaches.

“It’s a good time for our pitching guys to get their eyes on him,” Vogt said. “He’s getting closer to getting to the mound, so we just thought it would be a good time for him to come get with the guys, mix in with them. Also, just a chance for our trainers and pitching coaches to get their hands on him and see where he is at.”

Karinchak has progressed to throwing at 250 feet and is continuing to build toward a return to the mound, Vogt told reporters Tuesday. He is not eligible to come off the injured list until May 30, but will likely need several rehab appearances in minor league games before then.

Karinchak split last season between Cleveland and Triple-A Columbus, spending three extended stints on the major league roster. He finished with a 3.23 ERA in 39 innings across 44 appearances. Karinchack was 2-4 with a 3.90 ERA through 32 outings before he was optioned on June 10.

In his August and September stints with the Guardians, Karinchak made 10 scoreless appearances in 12 outings and posted a 1.59 ERA with 14 strikeouts. Karinchak’s walk numbers climbed in 2023 as he pitched to a 6.46 walks per nine innings and a career-low strikeout to walk ratio of 1.86. Still, the righty held opposing hitters to a .178 batting average and had the third-lowest opponent average among MLB relievers from 2019 to 2013 behind Devin Williams and Josh Hader.

Southwest Airlines CEO says airline may reevaluate open seating after financial loss

VIDEO: The controversy over Southwest Airlines’ new seats

Southwest Airlines famously allows passengers to select their own seats upon boarding, but the low fare carrier could be changing course.

virgin travel checklist

Earlier this week, after the Dallas-based carrier reported a $231 million net loss from the first quarter of 2024, CEO Bob Jordan commented on the "disappointing" results and said they are "evaluating options to enhance our Customer Experience" which he said includes "onboard seating."

"We are focused on controlling what we can control and have already taken swift action to address our financial underperformance and adjust for revised aircraft delivery expectations," he continued.

On a webcast recording of the earnings call, Jordan said, "It's been several years since we last studied this in-depth, and customer preference and expectations change over time."

Jordan later spoke about the potentially massive shift to its open seating cabins as a means to drive up revenue, CNBC first reported.

"We’re looking into new initiatives, things like the way we seat and board our aircraft," Jordan told CNBC.

While Southwest offers priority boarding groups for an additional fee, the company's all-Boeing 737 fleet of single economy class aircraft is known by consumers and among airline competitors for its simplistic and affordable experience.

Southwest did not respond to ABC News' request for additional comment and pointed to the quarterly earnings report.
