  • Two day boating itinerary: Upper River Bure

Two day boating itinerary: Upper River Bure -->

Wroxham, salhouse broad and horning, day 1 – wroxham and salhouse broad.

Boating on Salhouse Broad

Holiday cruisers are available to hire from Norfolk Broads Direct and Barnes Brinkcraft in Wroxham, and Ferry Marina in Horning.

This 2-day itinerary starts in Wroxham, the heart of the Broads. The two villages of Wroxham and Hoveton sit on either side of the River Bure. Bustling hubs full of places to eat and shop, they are often referred to as the capital of the Broads. There is a Broads National Park Information Centre based at Station Road Hoveton. Book an early table at the Hotel Wroxham where you can enjoy breakfast on the terrace overlooking the water. The restaurant and stunning waterside terrace are open every day for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Watch the hustle and bustle of the day unfold as the hire boats go out and people start to arrive for their Broads Tours river trips.

After breakfast, wander up to the Bure Valley Railway station at Wroxham, where you will take a nostalgic trip by steam train on Norfolk’s longest narrow-gauge railway. Steam trains operate regularly between the old market town of Aylsham and Wroxham. The Bure Valley Railway was built on the trackbed of part of the former Great Eastern Railway and the 9 mile line runs through meadowland, ancient pastures and picturesque Broadland villages. The trip to Aylsham by train takes about 45 minutes. At Aylsham station, you’ll find lots of facilities including the Whistlestop Café and a shop stocking a wide range of railway-themed souvenirs and gifts, as well as being a paradise for any model railway enthusiasts.

Leave the station and take in the historic market town of Aylsham. The prominent marketplace is surrounded by beautiful 18th-century houses and reflects the town’s prosperity from the textile and cloth trade at the time. A mile from the marketplace you will discover Redwings Horse Sanctuary , home to almost 90 friendly horses and donkeys who now live there. They love visitors and you can get up close and cuddly every day between 10:30am - 4pm until the end of August. Take the return journey by steam train back to Hoveton station, where you will pick up your holiday cruiser.

The Fur and Feather at Woodbastwick

Follow the River Bure south out of Wroxham, taking in the pretty riverside properties along the way. After about 30 minutes, gently cruising you’ll come to Salhouse Broad . Moorings are available but it can get very busy in high season, so please arrive early. Salhouse Broad is a place of great natural beauty, where you can explore the nature boardwalks, walk through the woods or hire a canoe. In fact, you might find that one night just isn’t enough. If you decide to stay on, it’s worth hiring a canoe and paddling over to Hoveton Great Broad to discover some real Broadland wilderness at one of Britain's finest National Nature Reserves. Hoveton Great Broad Nature Trail is only accessible by boat and promises a peaceful hour-long stroll around this isolated reserve. Alternatively, you can moor up on the River Bure, just on the other side of Hoveton Great Broad, and walk to the start of the route.

Spend some time enjoying the peace and tranquillity of Salhouse Broad before dinner. You’re on holiday, so it’s time to leave the cooking to someone else! When hunger gets the better of you, head up to Woodforde’s Brewery and the Fur & Feather Inn , 20 minutes’ walk from the edge of the Broad. Their award-winning real ales and traditional home-cooked food are a Norfolk institution. Visit early for a brewery tour and some shopping, or just enjoy a great meal and a pint in the cosy pub or outdoor beer garden. You’ll need to take a torch if you’re planning to walk back to your mooring after dark.

Day 2 – Horning

Paddleboarding at Horning

In the morning take a 15 minute walk, into Salhouse village for a stop off at Prima Rosa . Combining crafts with a passion for baking, the owners Judith and Martin have created an amazing vintage style tea-room and craft shop that’s well worth a browse. From 9:30am you can treat yourself to breakfast or pick up a packed lunch to take away for later.

Back on board your holiday cruiser, continue your journey south along the River Bure for about half an hour or so to the pretty village of Horning. There are several places for you to moor at Horning, either side of the river, although it can get incredibly busy so please do arrive early. For this itinerary, you’ll need to access land from the north bank. Not to worry if you’ve moored on the other side, as the Horning Foot Ferry is available to take walkers and cyclists across the River Bure and also provides a customised water taxi service in the area.

Horning is full of riverside houses and pubs, restaurants and shops. It’s a stunning iconic Broads waterside location with so many places to sit back, relax and watch the world go by. At the weekends you can watch the sailing races from Horning sailing club. If you’d like to try something a little more energetic, book yourself a paddleboarding session with GoPaddle . They provide beginner sessions for adults and children of all ages and abilities as well as daily and weekly hire.

Walk from Horning village for approximately 20 minutes to BeWILDerwood , the award-winning forest of wild family fun and adventure. At BeWILDerwood you’ll discover treehouses, zip wires, jungle bridges, Crocklebogs, boat trips, storytelling and fabulous marsh walks where the whole family can enjoy a few hours running off some steam and exploring the wild Norfolk landscape.

After all that fun and adventure, it’s time to relax on board your cruiser and plan what you’re going to do tomorrow.

Superb Jazz Cruise

We had to book tickets a long time in advance to secure our place on the last Sunday afternoon Jazz Cruise of 2015. A gentle cruise in the sunshine on the Broads on a Sunday afternoon is hard to beat but when you add pleasant company and a highly experienced jazz band on the top deck - well - just perfect This 3 hour special explored some 'off the main stream' sections and we relaxed beautifully. Strongly recommended!

Glad you enjoyed your trip with us The dates for next years Lumiere Rouge jazz trips are now available !!

A great way to travel the Broads a great commentary on board with tea coffe and a bar on board. Advisable to book as it is very popular with bus excursions.

We had a lovely couple of hours cruising up and down the river/broad from Horning. The commentary was very informative and made for a nice afternoon on the water. Suggest you pre book to ensure you are able to board on the day and time you want.

A brilliant day out with beautiful scenery on the Southern Comfort paddle boat . A very informative trip, the skipper was brilliant and I got the chance to steer the boat. Reasonably priced and well worth doing.

Spent a couple of hours cruising aboard the Southern Comfort. Beautiful scenery, spotted lots of wildlife and had a very informative skipper. Could not fault.

Lovely trip on the Broads aboard the Southern Comfort Paddle Steamer. The Skipper was very informative throughout the journey from Horning and into the surrounding countryside. Pointing out places of interest and the different wildlife also giving us historical information about the Broads and the people who lived there.

Horning in Norfolk

Horning is a charming village situated on the banks of the River Bure, in the heart of the Norfolk Broads . With its picturesque location, rich history, and wealth of activities and amenities, it's no surprise that Horning is a popular destination for holidaymakers and day-trippers alike.

During the 19th and early 20th centuries, Horning became a popular holiday destination for the upper classes. Many wealthy families would spend their summers in the village, enjoying the beautiful scenery and boating on the river. Today, Horning remains a popular destination for tourists, and there are plenty of activities and amenities to keep visitors entertained.

The History Of Horning

Horning has a rich history that dates back to the Roman period. The village was first mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086 and was known as "Horninges" at that time. During the Middle Ages, the village grew in size and importance due to its strategic location on the River Bure. It was an important trading centre for goods such as wool, corn, and timber. The village also had its own shipyard, which produced boats for use on the Broads.

For those interested in history, there are several historic sites in and around Horning. The ruins of St. Benet's Abbey are just a short boat ride away and are well worth a visit. The abbey was founded in the 9th century and played an important role in the religious and social history of the area. Today, only the ruins remain, but they are a testament to the abbey's former glory.

In the 14th century, the village became an important port for transporting goods along the River Bure. During this time, it was also a centre for boat-building, with many skilled craftsmen producing a range of vessels, from wherries to yachts. The importance of the village as a trading and boat-building centre continued well into the 19th century when the introduction of the railway made transportation by water less necessary.

Today, Horning is primarily a tourist destination, with many visitors coming to enjoy the scenic beauty of the surrounding area and explore the village's history.

Wroxham Boat Trips

If you’re staying in Wroxham, you MUST go out in a boat! Cross the bridge into the village and you’ll see boats everywhere. T here’s several wheel-chair friendly boat trips, many times a day with fully licensed bar and light refreshments. Cost is around £10 per person, depending on distance and boat. These larger boats have a commentary and some run out of season too, with special evening, Halloween, music, and Christmas trips.  See cruise schedules at Broads Boat Trips .

Panorama Wroxham looks great from any angle, but  exceptionally beautiful  from the water. The enchanting landscape is like going back in time. From the river you see many things invisible otherwise: wildlife, reed beds, thatched cottages, beer gardens, and little canals like in Venice.

Day Boat Hire Don't be afraid to hire your own boat: it's more fun! The Bure is navigable 31-miles from Coltishall to Great Yarmouth – the longest of the Broads rivers. From Wroxham you only have time to cruise as far as Horning or Coltishall and back for the day. Plan your journey with a speed of 4 mph.  Day boats are easy to drive, most are electric.  If you can drive a car, you can control a boat. Steer by looking a long way ahead, and remember a boat doesn’t have breaks!

Cost & Where To Go Prices from £18 to £25 an hour or £85 a day for a small 6-person picnic boat. You must book ahead in the summer:  Richardson’s  or Wroxham Boat Hire .  Hire for at least 3-hours and cruise to Horning - an  hour each way . A  beautiful little village with pubs, restaurants, tea houses, post office and other shops. There's benches where you can sit and watch the boats sail by - if they're all taken: picnic in your boat!

  • Salhouse Broad is a lovely place to moor and take a walk on its grassy bank. The Fur & Feather next to Woodfords Brewery in Woodbastwick is only 15-minutes walk from the mooring, as is The Bell at Salhouse.
  • An hour from Wroxham is the picturesque village of Horning, running along the bank for more than a mile. Horning has two outstanding pubs, especially The Swan with log fires (even in late-summer evenings) and free moorings by the beer garden.
  • Ranworth is a pretty village situated on Malthouse Broad accessed via a dyke. The Malsters pub here has moorings close by and a nice beer garden. About 2-hours from Wroxham.
  • South Walsham is another typical broadland village with The Ship Inn in its centre – about a mile from free moorings on South Walsham Broad along Fleet Dyke.
  • St Benets Abbey is just downriver from where the River Ant flows into the Bure, near Ludham. A derelict wind pump and ruins of a Benedictine monastery founded in the 9th century.
  • Palmer’s Windmill is at Upton Dyke between Acle and the junction of the Bure and Thure Rivers. The dyke is narrow, but has public moorings at the end on its left. The village of Upton is a short walk, with a post office, 14th century church and the rustic White Horse Pub opened in 1872.
  • Acle is the limit on day trips from Wroxham: leave early morning. A traditional market town by the River Bure with a train station between Norwich and Yarmouth and three pubs. Closest mooring is Acle Dyke, slightly further downriver from Acle Bridge. However, Acle Bridge is easier to moor and is close to the Bridge Inn. Allow almost 3 ½ hours to get here from Wroxham.

  • Coltishall Common has two pubs, the Rising Sun and the Kings Head. A little further brings you to The Red Lion which is nearer the village where there is a fish & chip shop and other stores. About 1 ¼-hours from Wroxham Bridge.
  • Coltishall Lock is the end of navigation, with just enough room to turn round. Not much else there.
