The Best Hotels in Barbados

By Rosalyn Wikeley and Angelina Villa-Clarke

Cobblers Cove

Barbados may have its own laid-back Caribbean island charm, where languorous afternoons stretch out along white-sand beaches that slope into surreal turquoise bays, but there’s more to this coral island than sand and sea. UNESCO World Heritage –listed Bridgetown thrums with independent stores, markets showing off Bajan fruit and art, and buildings steeped in history (and invariably, rum) such as St Nicolas Abbey. Community roadside rum shacks are as prolific here as tropical gardens—the Andromeda Botanic Gardens near Bathsheba village are particularly lovely—and festivals such as The Food and Rum Festival and Crop Over Festival peer into the Bajan. For several weeks, performers take to the streets in flamboyant costumes, and the warming smell of spiced sweet potatoes, chicken curry, and fried flying fish hangs in the air.

Only 21 miles from tip to tip, Barbados offers up this blend of beach and culture to all locations—surfers tend to cling to the underrated east coast for its Atlantic waves while the sun-worshippers stay west for the calm, bath-warm waters of the Caribbean Sea. Although parts of the island have succumbed to all-inclusive culture, Barbados’ shores play host to a clutch of stylish hotels, many that evoke a bygone era of pre-lunch gin and tonics over backgammon, a few channeling the island’s no-frills spirit with creative Creole menus and whitewashed rooms.

From family-owned pillared legends with country club rhythms and back garden patches of flawless beach to pared-down boutiques filled with Calypso music and plates of just-caught seafood, here are the best hotels in Barbados.

For even more options, see our pick of the best all-inclusive Barbados resorts .

Sandy Lane

Sandy Lane Arrow

One of Barbados’ most glamorous hotels, Sandy Lane’s polished marble floors, old-fashioned sofas, and heart-tugging sea views framed by stone arches and pillars set an opulent tone. It backs onto a pretty stretch of blond beach on the west coast, not far from colorful Holetown. Despite the impeccable service, the Neo-Palladian stone bedrooms and the multitude of diamonds flickering under candlelight at supper, the atmosphere here is seriously easygoing.

In British or American country club style, guests zip off in golf carts after a lazy buffet breakfast to one of Sandy Lane’s three golf courses, or commit to a full day in the palatial spa—easily done with its sauna, steam room, and hydrotherapy pool assault course, along with an impressive raft of delicious treatments, from Bajan sugar cane scrubs to cryotherapy energy facials. A gelato bar, water sports, and a truly superb Treehouse Club for smalls play to the country club idyll, buying deserving parents some time on the beach. Along with the romanesque pillared L’Acajou restaurant and the more relaxed Bajan Blue, an enormous layered pool with its own waterfall serves as a focal point in the hotel, where sunbathers can observe the comings and goings of tennis whites , or kaftans floating back from the bar with fresh piña coladas. — Rosalyn Wikeley

Cobblers Cove Arrow

This family-owned boutique hotel’s trump card, besides the photogenic striped pink scalloped umbrellas, is its quarter mile of powder-soft beach in a sleepy cove. Pastel-hued suites are dotted around tropical gardens festooned with palms and banana leaves and a terra-cotta pool terrace, which feels suspended over views of the bay like a theater seat. Tastefully dressed in subdued fabric of hand-printed corals, whitewashed rattan, and bamboo, rooms spill onto terraces framed by bougainvillea, inhaling the salty breeze. Camelot and Colleton are the hot-ticket turreted rooms of the coral-washed Great House, with their rooftop terraces and romantic bay views. The main spaces read like a British country pile, with a drawing room and cavernous hall, just with bright pinks and greens and plantation shutters—a blend that reflects the island's rich and complex history.

Mornings at Cobblers Cove recall country clubs of yore, where a genteel breakfast din is occasionally interrupted by the pop of tennis serve or Champagne cork. Sedate afternoons typically slump between lounge chairs and the balmy sea, where guests can paddle out in search of turtles or gently part the calm, glassy on a paddleboard. When not leaning into the hotel’s afternoon tea tradition or its phenomenal spa, sailing and waterskiing sessions take place every day, and guests can now join local fisherman Barker on his ‘catch of the day’ adventures. Bajan chef Jason Joseph ensures Camelot preserves its status as one of the island’s top restaurants (an elegant white tablecloth affair), while weekly buffets and barbecues show off local dishes in a more buttoned-down setting. — Rosalyn Wikeley

Colony Club by Elegant Hotels

From its swim-up pool rooms to the Rum Vault, where you’ll find 150 varieties of rum and private dining experiences, the offering at Colony Club is all about top-notch sophistication. Originally a private member’s club dating back to the 1930s, it has since shrugged off its outdated colonial associations and replaced them with a cool approach to hospitality.

There are a ton of activities on offer—from paddleboarding clinics to the Corks and Canvas workshop, where you can unleash your inner creative soul while sipping on a rum punch . Feeling jet lagged? Head to the petite but perfectly formed spa, which offers an exacting list of treatments. The Sun Salutation Ritual harnesses a cocktail of tropical goodies—think papaya and sea salt in a scrub and a body wrap made from cooling aloe—guaranteed to put the zing back in your step.

The 96 bedrooms are chic with contemporary four-poster beds, whitewashed walls, and bronze accessories. Adding further charm is a series of lagoon pools, with waterfalls and tropical plants, that meander through the property. Dining brings a touch of pizzazz—with lobster and jazz nights and beach BBQs with steel pan bands. The hotel is also a 10-minute walk from Holetown if you want to dip into the local nightlife. — Angelina Villa-Clarke

The House by Elegant Hotels Arrow

Bringing a different dimension to Barbados’ west coast—more typically the location of larger and swankier hotels—The House is a petite and intimate hotel catering to adults only. With just 34 bedrooms, the vibe here is hands-on and personal. Check-in and kick off your shoes, for you may as well be staying at a friend’s chic beach house. Attentive hotel staff—who are called ‘ambassadors’—are on hand to deliver housemade popsicles on the beach or to offer a complimentary tour of Hunt’s Gardens, a botanical oasis created in the 1950s, located in the center of the island.

Bedrooms are pared back and elegant—from the cool terra-cotta floors to the oversized padded headboards. Bathrooms continue the refined aesthetic with creamy marble vanities, rainfall showers, and full-sized, natural Elemental Herbology products.

Feeling deliciously under the radar, it’s the little thoughtful touches that are The House’s strong point. There is a complimentary jet lag massage, for instance, and a daily choice of wellness activities, including pilates and meditation sessions. When it comes to dining, the hotel is all-inclusive, but forget unimaginative buffets; the offering is more fine-dining than ‘fill-your-boots’ fare. Champagne breakfasts, Caribbean afternoon tea, and a crowd-pleasing coastal Italian menu at Positano are seriously grown-up, while nightcaps at the 1703 Mount Gay Rum Bar are a fun-fueled way to end the day Bajan-style. The morning after, you can soothe any sore heads by floating in the tranquil waters of Paynes Bay Beach—known as the best place on the island to bathe. — Angelina Villa-Clarke

Fairmont Royal Pavilion Arrow

Arriving via the grand palm tree-lined avenue sets the tone for what is one of the most historic properties in Barbados. The Fairmont Royal Pavilion was formerly The Miramar Hotel, built in the 1940s and the first hotel to be constructed on the west coast of Barbados. These days, its 12 rooms have since been expanded to 75 showstoppers—all with unspoiled ocean views and featuring handcrafted woodwork, local artworks, and navy-blue accents.

Stay in one of the ground floor rooms and you can pad across the sand every morning for a dip in the sea. Upper-level rooms have their own advantages—breezy terraces with curvy rattan daybeds and endless views over the arc of Alleynes Bay. The hotel has heritage sewn into its shell-pink walls, so you can expect traditional afternoon teas and refined Bajan cuisine conjured up by chef Tim Palmer (the crab cake with coconut curry emulsion is the star of the show).

The glorious gardens , originally designed by renowned South American landscape architect, Fernando Tabora, are a joy. Atriums and shady paths are lined with mango, breadfruit, cherry, and banana trees; frangipani cascades over courtyards and ponds are pretty with red and white lilies which bloom at night. Book a botanical tour every Wednesday morning to find out more about some of the rare plants and discover that there’s more to this coastline than just the beach. — Angelina Villa-Clarke

Coral Reef Club

Coral Reef Club

It’s easy to imagine 20th-century writers penning chapters of novels on The Coral Reef Club’s pretty verandas. The hotel is imbued with Old World charm, from its mahogany wicker sofas softened with cream cushions to the elaborate tea trays and heated games of doubles before breakfast. Suites seize on this unapologetically traditional yet laid-back theme with gold framed illustrations you’d expect in an English country home , mahogany cabinets displaying coral and those formal, structured sofas where cushions are as plump as they are stiff. Occupying a fairly narrow stretch of beach on the west coast, guests can wander along the boardwalk to pretty Holetown (the first town to be built on the island around 1695), but the form here tends to be poolside with several rounds of rum cocktails.

The hotel is owned by the O’Hara family, who also own a sister property, The Sandpiper , and whose presence in Barbados dates back to the 1950s. As such, a home-away-from-home feel pervades, despite the layout where two large pools, a water sports area, and a spa seem to absorb most of the coiffed crowds. The spa is a real draw—cleverly sewn into acres of resplendent tropical gardens as a vast open-air building. Guests float from first-class treatments to the thermal gardens or steam room and yogis head to the relaxation room for biweekly yoga classes. One restaurant serving elaborate plates avoids the agony of indecision and politely requests a shirt and good manners. — Rosalyn Wikeley

Little Good Harbour Barbados

Little Good Harbour

Here is a cool, carefree alternative on the quiet northwest coast, well away from the jet set and dress code barbecue buffets. Divided between the inland side of the Coastal Road and the beachside, Little Good Harbour’s whitewashed rooms are pared down, with gentle Bajan accents via the local art and occasional pops of color. Personal kitchens and large marble bathrooms suggest more private cottages than hotel rooms. Some feature mahogany four-poster beds draped, quite romantically, in mosquito nets, while others have large balconies where sunsets are best viewed from smart sofas and armchairs. The common thread seems to be laid back and lovely.

The main coral stone building blinks onto a charming and slightly disheveled beach through green shutters. The Fish Pot enjoys the same view from its lime-green veranda—the restaurant has worked hard to win the hearts (and stomachs) of locals and epicureans with a splendidly simple menu of fresh fish, pasta, and curries. It’s now considered one of Barbados’ best restaurants and without frills and steep prices. The poolside scene is refreshingly unpretentious here—guests sink into green cushioned loungers under the shade of giant palms, nodding off to the trickle of water from a Balinese sculpture, or (in the second, smaller pool) amid every shade of tropical green. A pocket-sized spa punches above its weight with all sorts of massages and scrubs. And, though cabin fever here is unlikely, buzzing Speightstown’s independent boutiques, bars, and cafes are a five-minute drive away. — Rosalyn Wikeley

The Sandpiper Arrow

A little smaller than its sister hotel, The Coral Reef Club (tucked just north along the west coast), The Sandpiper shares its easy-going elegance despite its position on the lively outskirts of tourist-heavy Holetown. The patch of golden sand and turquoise sea it backs onto is rarely empty, which makes for first-rate people watching and charting the progress of sailing boats and water skiers. While compact, the hotel is ensconced in tropical gardens, with bougainvillea, palms, and ferns springing from every angle. Rooms oscillate between a traditional, wicker-and-mahogany aesthetic and a more contemporary one, though all spring to life with bright colors and prints.

A large sun deck, suspended above the sand, makes the most of ethereal beach views, particularly as the sun burns the horizon a deep crimson at sunset. Rum cocktails in hand and deck shoes flicked off, guests relish The Sandpiper’s informal spirit. Even the refined open-air restaurant, ring-fenced by torch-lit tropical gardens and koi ponds, demands little more than a linen shirt for tasty plates of Bajan flying fish, Caribbean shrimp, and lobster salads. And while afternoons are easily whiled away alongside the large pool or magazine-ready lap pool lined with inviting creamy parasols, the Coral Club’s palatial spa is but a concierge call away. — Rosalyn Wikeley

Tamarind is the most family-friendly hotel in Elegant Hotels’ Barbados portfolio and is perfect for toddlers and teens alike. Set on Paynes Bay, swimming is safe for tiny tots in the crystal waters, while kayaking, sailing, and snorkeling will keep older kids amused for hours. Children can also join a dedicated island experience, during which they learn local phrases, cook typical dishes and take home a Bajan ‘passport’.

Styling is bright and breezy with pops of color from modern artwork, rugs, and printed textiles across the 101 bedrooms. For dining, search out the Bajan specialities, such as flying fish, roti, and macaroni pie, or take advantage of the Dine Around program at the other Elegant Resorts properties for a change of scenery.

Days at Tamarind start at the Sugar Cane Room, where you can enjoy fresh papaya juice, traditional ‘bakes,’ and the fluffiest herb omelettes. Head to the beach for snorkeling—you may spot sea turtles and manta rays—or to one of the three pools, where fruit kebabs and popsicles are served to cool you down. — Angelina Villa-Clarke

Pre-cruise and post-cruise

Cool Cruiser

We're looking at taking our first SIlversea cruise in 2023, and I had a few questions about pre-cruise and post-cruise. For the included flights, how much choice do you have over the schedule and carrier? And how do the included transfers work if you have a hotel stay before or after the cruise? WIll SIlversea supply the transfers regardless of the hotel choice, or do you need to stay in one of their preferred hotels? The cruise we're looking at is Southampton to Reyjkavik, and we'll probably want to spend a couple of days in the London area and up to a week in Iceland.

These questions assume the choices are within reason, like not using a hotel 100 miles away or taking an unreasonably expensive flight.

There are several threads on this topic .  But I’ll chime in…Regarding air, it pays to do a little research and request preferred airlines and routing before SS comes back to you with their offering.  If you deviate outside of their usual carriers and routing you’ll have to pay a deviation fee. It is still usually a better deal than booking on your own, especially when flying biz.  For example, for my Southampton to Lisbon cruise I will be arriving 5 days early in London and stopping over in Paris for several weeks after my cruise.  I don’t have a quote yet but expect it will be a few hundred $$ more.

As for hotels, you need to stay in their hotel for an inflated rate to utilize the transfer.  For London to Southampton there are some very reasonable car services.

60,000+ Club

Good morning,  in order to use the SS transfers you will need to stay at one of the SS hotels.

As for flights, I can tell you from experience, you can have a say in which flights you take. I always take the Business Class Upgrade on overseas flights and recently booked a cruise that sails out of Lisbon in April 2022.

They gave me a flight that had a short layover in Paris (too short) and it made me quite uneasy. I called my SS rep and we found another flight with much better times.....she contacted the air dept and they changed my flight. 🙂  So, yes, you can have a say in flights.

Thanks

On the air we a looking at a cruise out of Athens.  We have a retirement home in Belize and so we can fly out of pretty much any gateway.  Delta has a nonstop to Athens out of Atlanta  and American out of Philly.   Do the put you on a nonstop if available.    I prefer not to fly through LHR as that is always a mess.  We planned to do a stop over in Italy on the way as I still have some hotel credits there (covid cancellations)  Will they accommodate that?

@mahasamatman  Reykjavic is a compact city, so taking a cab from the port to your hotel of choice should be quite easy, fast and inexpensive.

@Lonedaddy  You can definitely do your research for your best flight options, and give them to your travel agent or SS representative to request them from the SS air department. If it's an airline they have a contract with, and they aren't over their allocated number of seats (per flight? day? month?), and it isn't significantly more expensive than some other flight combination, they will often give you your preferred flight. So it definitely pays to ask. Once you involve other factors, such as stopping somewhere else, they would likely charge you a deviation fee -- but it's still worth proposing the flights you want and seeing what cost they come up with. When you get the air department price quote, if you can buy it yourself for significantly less, then you can opt to do so.

MBP&O2/O

MBP&O2/O

The last couple of times we flew I told SS exactly which flights we wanted. All were given. We were using the KLM/AF codeshare which is on their lists.

Because we were going out early and arranging our own hotels and transfers, they never charged us for the ‘deviation’.

Hello I am starting thinking of what I should put into my luggage and was wondering whether SS provides  masks on a daily basis or if I should take my own supply? Thanks.

Good morning, yes, they do provide masks but I bring my own too. I have a black one with a bit of bling on it for evenings 🙂 ......it goes with every outfit 🙂

Thank you very much for your answer.

You're correct about the city but the international airport, KEF or Keflavik, is quite a ways from the city.  As I recall, It's about an hour drive from the city.  Reykjavik City airport is for domestic flights.

Unfortunately, a taxi or private transfer in Iceland is not what I consider inexpensive.  In July, they were running about $150 to $160, one-way.  A previous trip we used the shuttle bus but we had to transfer from the large bus to a smaller one and then stop at several hotels.  I think it doubled the transfer time.

To mahasamatman, whatever you decide, enjoy yourself.  Iceland is a great country.

Yes, but I didn't think that was the issue here. @mahasamatman  said "The cruise we're looking at is Southampton to Reyjkavik, and we'll probably want to spend a couple of days in the London area and up to a week in Iceland" -- so the issue was the initial transfer from the ship to a hotel in Iceland. I was noting that from the port SS uses to any hotel in Reykjavik is a short and inexpensive taxi ride.

Getting from Reykjavik to the airport in Keflavik is indeed about a 45-50 minute drive.  Private transfers are in the $150-$160 price range as you indicated. But there is also the FlyBus and other bus transfer services with modern coaches for $25-$35 per person. However, if they are spending a week in Iceland, they might also be renting a car, so returning the car at the airport removes the transfer cost entirely. The car return at their airport is very easy.

I'd be suggesting renting a car would be a must if staying for a week. Iceland is a very unique country and worth exploring. Obviously subject to time of year and places you want to visit (ie unmade roads, icy conditions and 4x4 needed.) My last visit was in April 2012 - when we drove to say thankyou to the volcano that got us a free week stay in Singapore 2 years previous.

Lots to see and do, but is expensive - or can be! We rented an apartment, made a hot breakfast in the morning, took a pack lunch out for the day, then basic hot meal back in the apartment in the evening. Look for the pink piggy for the supermarket! Eating and drinking in bars and restaurants is expensive. On arrival at Keflavik, we used the duty free shop for booze.... and then never drank any of it! lol Obviously won't be an option for your cruise, but nothing to stop you bringing something on the ship in Southampton.

I've also got a Summer 2023 Iceland cruise booked and intend to stay extra time, so will definitely do as suggested above.

jpalbny

IME, renting a car is the way to go here. Like everything else in Iceland, it's expensive, but it's the best way to see as much of Iceland as possible.

One hint - if you rent from Hertz, and you're arriving by cruise ship, you can arrange the pick up at the Reykjavik domestic airport and return the car to Keflavik for your international flight home. Hertz will come to the pier and pick you up to take you to your car, if you ask them in advance. We've done that twice and it ends up not costing any additional fee for the pick up. You do need to tell them which pier you're arriving at, though. Once I had to call them because they came to the wrong pier.

Another vote for renting a car. We did this for three days prior to a Reykjavik to Greenland cruise three years ago. I did the reverse of @jpalbny : I rented from Hertz at Keflavic and returned to Hertz near the small downtown airport. Hertz had a van drive me back to our hotel downtown at no charge. (I had planned on walking back if the van wasn't available, as it is only about 1.5 miles from the Hertz location to our hotel near the waterfront, but they were happy to drive me, and I was happy to save the time so we could head to the ship!)

Three days wasn't enough time to circumnavigate the island, but we did get to explore a lot of the western side of the island. Day 1: we landed around 6 am, rented a car, drove to Reykjavik and had "breakfast" at a great bakery, then left the city and did the Golden Circle, passed back through Reykjavik a did a pretty drive up to a lovely, small hotel in Husafell so we could do the Into The Glacier tour the next morning. (I highly recommend it, even though it's pricey.) ( That was a long day!) Day 2: we did the Into the Glacier tour in the morning, then drove up to Hellnar on the Snæfellsnes peninsula for the night. Day 3: we did a short exploration of Snæfellsjokull National park, on to the iconic Kirkjufell mountain, and then back to Reykjavik for the night. In the morning, we walked around Reykjavik before I returned the car to Hertz and we took a very short taxi from our hotel to board the Silver Cloud at the downtown port. (If we didn't have lots of luggage, it was close enough that we could have walked.) All in all, it was about 350 miles, and we got only about a sixth of the way around the island, but we felt we packed a lot in with our available time. I look forward to going back some day and taking a week to circle the island.

At the conclusion of our cruise in Greenland, we had a return flight to Iceland which arrived too late to fly home that day, so I rented a car again for one day in order to drive into Reykjavik for the night. We had the morning free to visit some places in Reykjavik which we missed on our first pass through the city, and then we drove back to Keflavic and returned the car in order to fly home.

Silversea Silver Moon Ship Reviews

Silversea Silver Moon Review

According to Cruise Industry News, Luxury and expedition cruises are the fastest-growing market segments, according to the 2022 Cruise Industry News Annual Report. The luxury passenger cruise ship segment has grown 119 per cent since 2012 to an annual capacity of approximately 721,078 passengers in 2022, from 324,512 in 2012.

Trying to determine which are the best ultra-luxury cruise lines and cruise ships can be a challenge, but it  is important to do so as you will be investing a large amount of money for your dream vacation.

In this post, we review the Silver Moon cruise ship, one of Silversea’s newest vessels and take a close look at the onboard facilities during our recent voyage.

Table of Contents

Introduction to the silver moon.

This voyage was our second cruise on the wonderful Silver Moon, one of Silversea’s newer ships and sister to Silver Muse and Silver Dawn. We joined the ship in Barbados for a 22-day voyage to Lisbon in Portugal which took in many of the islands in the Caribbean we had not visited before. Silver Moon is a sophisticated cruise ship which offers understated elegance at every turn – delightful cuisine plus excellent, intuitive service.

With just 596 passengers and a crew-to-passenger ratio of 1.45, this ship provides a relaxed feel, plenty of space around the vessel, and spacious public areas. Silversea is one of the few cruise lines offering an Ultra Luxury experience. If you love great food and being well cared for, Silver Moon is for you.

We enjoy Silversea as it is one of the few luxury cruise lines with a genuinely All-Inclusive fare. Our trip included the option of a Door-to-Door service, flights, a pre-cruise hotel in Barbados, accommodation, all beverages, gratuities and a selection of Shore excursions for each port of call.

The Voyage Itinerary

Welcome aboard.

Our transfer from the O2 Beach Club and Spa, booked by Silversea, was about a 20 minutes drive from the St Lawrence Gap area, where we stayed after our 8 hour flight from London to Barbados with Virgin Atlantic.

It was a hot and sunny day when we reached the Cruise Terminal to embark on Silversea Silver Moon ship.. The cruise terminal looked like an old warehouse, but it was well organised, and once the mandatory health checks and covid documents had been checked, we were all set to go.

Boarding was all very slick, and once onboard, we were presented with the obligatory glass of Champagne before finding our suite. Muster Drill for all newly embarked guests was a mandatory in-person session in the Venitian Lounge with a full demonstration and a trip to see our lifeboat. All very good and what we would expect from Silversea.

Pre Cruise Experience

Included in our package was Silversea’s much-heralded Door to Door service, whereby you are picked up at home and driven by chauffeur service to the airport. Subcontracted to Blacklane, we have used this service before, and it worked like a dream.

However, on this trip, we had to take three suitcases which, under Blacklane’s policies, meant we had to request a five-person MPV. Silversea only pays for the first 50 miles, so we faced a horrendous extra charge for the extra 40 miles to the airport. We decided to decline this offer and arrange our own transport. Silversea did credit us £150 for the non-use of the service, but it left a bad taste in our mouths and spoilt the start of our holiday.

The flight arrangements were acceptable, and our Silversea pre-cruise hotel in Barbados was perfect. The O2 Beach Club and Spa is an all-inclusive resort in the St Lawrence Gap area of the island. Watch our separate video review of the hotel.

A View from our Balacony Suite

We chose a Deluxe Veranda Suite 839, which at 323sq ft and a 64sq ft balcony, offers a luxury feel and is perfectly comfortable. The suite has a separate bathroom, walk-in closet, sleeping area and living area with a couch, table and desk. Storage is adequate for shorter journeys of up to 14 days, but a little more space for your clothes would be a bonus for longer trips.

The King size bed was extremely comfortable, and the sitting area was perfect for relaxing. Most suites include a balcony or veranda, which offers lots of personal outdoor space, making it an absolute joy to spend time outside. If you wish to take advantage of in-suite dining, the in-suite table converts into a proper dining table. There is a 40-inch LCD Tv with a generous selection of TV programs, movies and other features. You can view your daily activities and book restaurants and shore excursions. You can also do this using the Silversea Mycruise app on your mobile phone.

For those who love a hot soak in the bath, the full-size bathtub does not disappoint. The bathroom has lashings of marble, and it feels opulent but very functional and is a one-person bathroom with a single large sink/vanity. But in saying that, the separate shower cubicle has a sensational rain shower head and wand. A wide selection of Bvlgari toiletries is topped up each day.

There are plenty of power outlets, both US and European and US. WiFi is free for one connected device per passenger throughout the ship, which was painfully slow at times but just about useable. We experienced download speeds of 0.06Mb/s and 0.07Mb/s upload. An upgraded internet package was available at $29 per day, allowing streaming and up to four devices to connect simultaneously. We understand that Silversea will shortly be transitioning to the SpaceEx Starlink system, which should vastly improve internet speeds.

Every suite comes with a butler who caters to your every whim. It’s a nice touch and just another example of the warm, genuine service onboard Silversea ships. Our butler Wellesley was a very proactive butler who was always around to help restock our drinks fridge, provide canapés, book or cancel restaurants and the like—a big plus for Silversea.

Public Spaces and Bars

Public spaces are comfortable and enjoyable, and the pool area offers one of the biggest pools on a ship of this size. Overall, Silver Moon offers an upmarket experience, one where you never feel crowded. The decor takes influence from the successful design of her sister ship, Silver Muse, and maintains the small-ship intimacy and spacious all-suite accommodations that are hallmarks of the Silversea experience.

At the same time, several public spaces have been reimagined for the enjoyment of guests: the Dolce Vita lounge, the Connoisseur’s Corner, the Pool Deck, and the Spa and Fitness Centre have each undergone comprehensive redesigns. Moreover, the Arts Café, the Panorama Lounge, the Observation Library, the Venetian Lounge, and the Casino each welcome guests with atmospheres of understated luxury.

In terms of Bars, there are some beautiful venues onboard to enjoy your favourite tipple. Most beverages are included in the cruise fare unless you wish to order from the premium wine selection. We have found all the included wines, beers and spirits onboard to be of very high quality, and we never felt it necessary to order from the premium selection. For those who like to drink in their suite, your butler will stock this with your favourite wine, spirits or soft drinks. The bars on board include the Pool bar, Panorama Lounge, Dolce Vita, Observation Library, Silver Note, and Connoisseurs Corner.

Another favourite of ours is the SALT Bar, which has a lovely intimate feel with a lounge-style club setting. The cocktail menu is exciting and completely different. Whilst we love the signature cocktail, ‘Selene de Moon’, there is so much more on offer based on locally inspired cocktails! Tip: get there early to get a seat, as this is a very popular venue for pre-dinner drinks.

Silver Moon Review - The Arts Cafe

The Arts Cafe on Silver Moon

One of the many things we love about Silversea is the wide range of restaurants and dining venues onboard. Virtually all dining is included in the price of your cruise on Silver Moon, which means your fare includes extras like snacks, canapés, and afternoon tea, plus an extensive in-suite menu for those nights when you don’t want to go out.

One of the ingenious ideas is the commitment to local ingredients and local dishes, thanks to Silver Moon’s S.A.L.T program. S.A.L.T, which stands for Sea and Land Taste, is an immersive cultural and dining experience designed to give guests a fuller understanding of the food they are eating and its relation to the culture of the places the ship visits. We found that dining at all venues is executed well, with seemingly as much thought and care given to food at the pool grill as to dishes at the SALT Kitchen. Portion sizes are manageable, and they are always happy to cater to those with smaller appetites.

Silver Moon offers open seating, anytime dining during restaurant opening hours published in the Daily Chronicle, though many restaurants require reservations. In every restaurant, waiters/waitresses use iPads/tablets for taking our orders and should link through to your dietary instructions.

Silver Moon Review Atlantide Resturant

Dining Options

Silver Moon offers a choice of eight dining venues, each boasting a distinct concept and a five-star service that rivals any land-based hotel. From the delicious fresh seafood in Atlantide to the exclusive La Dame and Japanese Kaiseki, Silver Moon delights with unforgettable dining experiences. We tried all the venues, and we were happy with them all.

SALT Kitchen Deck 4

Designed to bring to life and experience the tastes together with the culinary customs of the places visited on your cruise, the exclusive SALT Kitchen is unlike any other restaurant at sea. Open seating with no booking required. Our View: We loved the SALT concept, which works very well. Both the food and service were of a very high standard.

Atlantide – Deck 4

Here, you can enjoy a wide range of international food with the high service levels you expect for an ultra-luxury line. Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Open seating with no booking required. Our View: A great restaurant offers good service levels and cuisine of a high standard. Excellent lunchtime menus. Some sofa-style seating in Atlantide is a little on the low side and can make you feel uncomfortably low when seated opposite someone on a regular chair.

La Terrazza – Deck 7 Inside and outside dining on the back of the ship

A firm favourite with us and most Silversea regulars, La Terrazza, is recommended for those seeking an authentic Italian dining experience. For breakfast and lunch, La Terazza offers a wide range of buffet options with the option to order freshly cooked favourites. At night, La Terrazza transforms into an Italian restaurant with an extensive menu that changes slightly each night. The seafood, meat options and plates of pasta are lovely. Try the Lasagne for a real treat. Reservations are required only for dinner at La Terrazza.

The Grill – Deck 10 Pool deck dining

For casual dining, the Pool Grill is the best option onboard. Open for lunch, the Pool Grill offers favourites, including wraps, burgers and salads—an excellent alfresco venue for when you want something satisfying but not too large. When night falls, the Grill becomes ‘Hot Rocks’ where you cook your own meal on hot volcanic stones—always great theatre and a treat where you can cook the steaks and seafood to perfection.

La Dame by Relais & Chateaux – Deck 8 Intimate venue.

A guest reservation fee of $60USD pp is required. In partnership with the luxury collection of hotels and restaurants, La Dame is Silver Moon’s upscale French fine dining restaurant, offering classic dishes with the occasional contemporary twist curated by Silversea’s top chefs. We tried this, and the food was exceptional, and this is a good choice for a special occasion. Whether the $120 per couple is good value is debatable, as the food is just as good elsewhere on the ship.

Our View: Whilst La Dame is perfect for special occasions, it is questionable whether the $60USD per person cover charge is worth it.

Kaiseki – Deck 4

A guest reservation fee of $40USD pp is required in the evening. Kaiseki is the Silveresea take on an Asian Fusion restaurant, executed well. Serving fresh Asian favourites, Kaiseki pays homage to the meticulous preparation and beautiful presentation of Japanese culinary excellence. The ship’s sushi bar during the day, Kaiseki, offers various sushi rolls and sashimi options. One of the smaller venues onboard, Kaiseki is a popular spot on sea days, especially when people are looking for something different. Diners can select tables or sit at the sushi bar while the chef makes rolls fresh to order. At lunch times reservations are not required.

Spaccanapoli – Deck 11

The best Pizzas we have ever had at sea. A trip to Naples without leaving the ship; Spaccanapoli is a relaxed Napolese-style pizzeria serving both Tradizione and Da Napoli pizzas. Our favourite: Tradizione Salsiccia, San Marzano Tomatoes, Fior di Latte, Sausage, Fresh Basil and Parmigiano Reggiano

Silver Note – Deck 7

Taking its cues from the world’s most exclusive nightspots if you are looking for something genuinely different, try Silver Note, which offers South American and Japanese fusion food. It’s a menu of smaller portions, so you choose between two to four dishes.

Silver Note also is a jazz club, so one night, you might hear a trio and another a pianist. Regardless, the music is a lovely complement to the meal, serving as a pleasant backdrop but still entertaining. Reservations are required at Silver Note, where dinner isn’t served until after 8 pm.

Our View: One of our favourites, but booking is essential as the venue is intimate and popular.

Arts Cafe – Deck 8

One of the trendiest venues onboard, thanks to its sophisticated cafe-style decor, artwork and floor-to-ceiling windows. The Arts Cafe is the go-to space for a snack, tea or coffee, with a light bites menu that changes throughout the day. For coffee lovers, the Arts Cafe doesn’t disappoint, serving only freshly ground Italian Illy coffee at all times.

All-Around Dining

On those occasions when you don’t want to go out, All-Around dining is your option. Silver Moon’s room service menu is excellent, giving guests extensive choices so you don’t feel like you are missing something by not visiting a restaurant. Food is available 24/7 and can be served in any of the public areas or bars.

Entertainment

The shows on board the Silversea Silver Moon start at 9:45 pm in the Venetian Lounge theatre with varied performances from Italian opera and classical pianists to 1960s West and Broadway show tunes. The performances by the Silversea Singers and Dancers were lively and always drew a full house.

In the evenings, many bars had background music with the Silver Moon Trio or Cocktail pianist. We would go to the Silver Note bar if we fancied some jazz music in the evening. During the day, there were several interesting lectures by guest speakers—all very high quality.

Our View: The seating in the Venetian lounge is a problem as people sitting on the comfortable bench sofas have their view interrupted/blocked out by guests seated in the individual tub chairs in front of them, which are higher than the sofas. Beware.

Silver Moon Review

Passenger Mix

Whilst there is no official dress code for the daytime on Silversea, they ask that swimsuits are only appropriate by the pool, and guests are requested to wear a shirt and shoes at all times in the public areas and to remove hats during mealtime (apart from hats or head coverings worn for religious reasons).

The evening dress code has three levels – Casual, Informal and Formal. The evening dress code is advertised daily in the Chronicles.

On Casual evenings, Ladies are expected to wear dresses, blouses, and pants, and for Gentlemen, Sports shirts and slacks—no shorts, flip-flops or jeans indoors after 6 pm.

The dress code for informal evenings is dresses or pantsuits for ladies and jackets for gentlemen (tie optional). On formal nights: cocktail dresses or pantsuits for ladies, tuxedos and dinner jackets or dark suits and ties for gentlemen.

On formal nights guests may choose informal wear for dining at La Terrazza, Kaiseki and Silver Note. Dining at Hot Rocks and Spaccanapoli is optional casual all nights. On our trip, we had three formal nights.

Boutiques & Onboard Shopping

There are three boutiques on the Silversea Silver Moon. One is a high-end jewellery shop, a large one with a great selection of watches, jewellery and perfume. On the other side of the corridor is another with men’s and women’s clothes, Silversea-branded merchandise and accessories. Final Thoughts

A genuinely refined experience, Silver Moon has an international feel mainly due to its Italian heritage and the mix of passengers from all over the world, with a heavy dose of Americans, Brits and Europeans. Fellow passengers are generally well-off, well-travelled, and accustomed to excellent service.

Decor onboard is understated, never veering into flashy. Silver Moon isn’t a ship loaded with crystal chandeliers or miles of marble, but it feels opulent yet relaxed at the same time.

Would we travel with Silversea again?

Yes, based on the itinerary and value for money. The new ships Silver Nova and Silver Ray are pretty tempting.

In December, before embarking on Silver Shadow, we stayed at the Hilton Barbados. It is really a very nice hotel, with an open lobby, nice rooms and balcony's all facing the water, and two big pools and a kiddies pool.

If you look closely at the kiddies pool, after the sun has gone down, you can see mongooses playing there!

If money is not an object--Sandy Lane is spectacular.

http://www.sandylane.com

The room was very luxurious and the cuisine superb... the problem is you won't want to leave to get on the ship!

We were on Wind at the end of March. We loved it. Worst we saw was a spot or two on the carpet on the whole ship.

We spent a day at Sandy Lane. I have loads of pics if you want to email me at [email protected] for them.

We just booked the Hilton for our cruise in October, the rate was very reasonable compared to other hotels.

We just booked the Hilton for our cruise in October, the rate was very reasonable compared to other hotels.   Joe

Joe, from our experience you will not be disappointed. We always stay at top hotels and usually in a suite, and we really enjoyed the Hilton, from the bar by the pool, to the open restaurant for dinner. There are two restaurants there.

unfathomable

unfathomable

It's good to hear that there is at least one good hotel in Barbados. We stayed two nights pre-cruise in one of the highly-rated (and high-priced) purpose-built resorts on the west coast a couple of years ago and despite being upgraded to a suite we were, er, very disappointed. We couldn't wait to get onto the ship.

please give me the name as it looks like anything on the west coast starts at 4 to 500 per night

If you'd like all-inclusive, you might try Crystal Cove. It has a tiered pool, waterfalls and caves - and a very nice beach. The standard rooms were just so-so. All food and beverages included in up-front price - nothing to sign for. 15 minutes to the pier.

I wouldn't stay there any longer than two nights, but for a short stay prior to a cruise, it was more than adequate.

thanks for all the info; looks like we will do 3 nites pre cruise in b arbados;will be arriving about midnite in bridgetown.any problem getting a cab then?has anyone stayed at coral reef lately or coral sands &which one would you recommend? any on on the wind on 10/06?? :o

3,000+ Club

Stayed a few years ago at the Royal Pavilion, and it was wonderful. Rooms right on the beach. It was a fairly small hotel so pretty quiet. We would go again.

greygypsy

The Hilton was really lovely and an excellent value. We considered the Crystal Cove and the reviews we saw were terrible.
