Fun and interesting!

We loved this tour- our guide was excellent- very knowledgeable and well-spoken. We loved the ghost stories, but also that there was lots of history mixed in. Seeing Colonial Williamsburg at night was lots of fun, too. Highly recommend this tour!

Colonial Ghosts Haunted Pub Crawl

The tour was both entertaining and very informative. William was our guide and was very interactive, well versed in the history, stories and legends of the area. We did the Haunted Pub Crawl and although several of the pubs are closed on Tuesdays, he did a great job filling in the time we may have spent at other pubs.

This is so amazing to hear! It means a lot to us that your guide made the experience so wonderful. We'd love to see you again in the next city you visit!

Fun and detailed tour

Tour guide was enthusiastic and detailed. My group had a great time.

Olivia was great

Olivia was great. Her additional historical knowledge was very interesting and worthwhile. The tour wasn't quite what I expected. I anticipated ghost stories about the pubs in the pubs. Overall still a very good experience.

We enjoyed this tour and the wonderful tour guide!! We caught some pictures and videos of some awesome things, and we really had a good time. To avoid the heat we took the late night tour and it was 100% worth it. We went out on a June night and it was just amazing. They had very good stories with some research behind each one.

Ask the Community

Ask a question

Do the guides wear colonial attire and carry a lantern on this tour?

No . They typically were a black T-Shirt that says the company name which considering the hot / humid weather and the RAIN, is very wise.

fun time. a lot of walking, but none-stop stories. Vince was our guy and easy to listen to and entertaining. He added to the stories photos from other tours of "odd events". we brought our own EMF reader for fun and had a lot of fun "alerts".

Photo of Emmy C.

Steve was our tour guide. Steve debunked almost everything that had occurred and as our guide that is unacceptable. Tour guide was not informed about the stories he would tell and couldn't give straight answers to questions. He did not know any years or any basic facts about it. He did not even add any type of dramatization or entertainment. He walked away from the group and extremely fast. There were 3 kids under the age of 13 that were talking over the guide, talking over the devices, disturbing those that were actually trying to make a connection, and all around disrespectful without any type of warning to stop from the tour guide. I (not the parent or tour guide) had to ask the children to please be respectful of the spirits we wanted to speak to. The kids (who weren't old enough to be there) truly ruined the tour due to their disrespect and their ignorance to the others in the group. It was billed as a 13 and over experience which is disappointing to have kids (not even old enough to be there) be a huge reason the paranormal investigation went poorly and the guide not stepping in made it 10x worse. We had spirit boxes, EMF detectors, and a laser type monitor that the tour guide himself said was "angry at him" as his reasoning for it not working. The devices that we did have were either dead or dying and we had to share since there wasn't enough for each person. The path we walked was the Market Square, a church, governors house, Randolfs house , and some type of market where they did amputations. This is not a listed path choice on the Ghost Hunt page on the company's website. Not sure if the website isn't updated, but I did a lot of research before going on this hunt so that was a little disappointing.

This tour was super fun, plus it was just a lovely evening walk. My 10 and 7 year old loved it. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable and the history was all interesting. Would definitely recommend, so glad we went!

Finally got to check out the Colonial Ghost Tour in Williamsburg. We purchased the extended tour with an EMF detector added. Our guide Chelsea was amazing! She was very well articulated and spoke loud enough for the whole group. She knew a lot of history with some personal experiences mixed in! We learned a lot we had never known about the area, while checking for readings on the detector and experiencing Colonial williamsburg at night. It was a lot of walking, but not any more than a normal day at Colonial Williamsburg. We had stopped at different historical sites, with a small speech on the history and background, along with notable figures and lore, then had some time to look around and take it all in before heading to the next stop. Guided by a lantern around midnight telling folklore and historical tales was just a whole different level of an experience! My recommendation would be to bring along a bottle of water and some good sneakers for walking. I wish I would have brought a camera just to take some epic night pictures, maybe next time!

Despite the temperature we really enjoyed ourselves. The host was very enthusiastic and shared a lot of information about the history of Colonial Williamsburg and the monuments.

It was very fun and our tour guide (Kathrine) was super sweet. The stories were very beautifully presented and she was super sweet and cared a lot about our group.

My family attended a one-hour tour in July 2024. The tour guide was a college student that acted like a wanna-be ghostbuster. His stories seemed embellished and not authentic especially when he was talking about his personal experiences. Several facts he stated were fact checked by our 13 year old daughter and could not be validated. We were looking for some kind of an exiting end to the final tour story and it fell flat. Fun to walk the streets of Williamsburg at night, but seemed made-up for entertainment. As a side note, my husband did seem to capture an orb on a live pic taken of the Randolph house.

Photo of Hank V.

Informative. Entertaining. Pace and presentation were excellent. Jarod also interacted well with the group.

9 reasons you must walk a colonial ghost tour if you’re in williamsburg, virginia… even if you don’t believe in ghosts (yet)!

You don't believe in ghosts.

Did you know scientists at Princeton University may have proven the existence of ghosts? Researchers at Princeton University have been studying paranormal phenomena in a scientific context for almost 30 years, through a department called “PEAR”. It stands for “Princeton Engineering Anomalies Research”. PEAR is a scientific study of consciousness-related physical phenomena.

You don’t like guided tours.

Have you ever had a terrible tour guide? Someone who wasn’t very likable, wasn’t very knowledgeable, didn’t have a good command of the group, was boring and unengaging? Not our tour Guides! They are the best. They will make a believer out of you. Not just in ghosts, but in how awesome a properly guided tour can be. Our guides take their role seriously - they are guiding you through 300 years of history, in places that have been evidently haunted, almost weekly, since they were discovered.

You want to learn the hidden secrets of our ghostly history.

Have you ever heard of a “memory palace”? It’s a technique used by memory athletes to remember fantastic amounts of information with perfect recall, in a short period of time. What you do is, you associate different imagery and stories with different features of locations you’re familiar with (like different rooms in your house).

You’ve only got a couple days in town, and you’re not sure what to do.

If you’ve only got a couple days in town, maybe you’re with your significant other, or maybe you’re with your friends, or even your whole family, and you’re spending your precious paid time off here in Williamsburg, so that every move you make counts… then you simply must come visit us.

You’re on a date.

Did you know the hormones our bodies release when we’re thrilled have an influence on attraction? It’s why roller-coasters make such a great first date. This has been studied over and over, but it’s worth repeating here. If you’re taking someone on a date, and you’re looking to have a lot of fun together, or to increase attraction for each other, it’s a good idea to find something that gets the blood pumping. The best activities are even a little scary, like a roller coaster. Or a haunted old church.

You want to do something you and your family will have fun with, and have even more fun remembering together!

What is it worth to take a trip with your family that actually brings everyone together, even if it’s just for an hour or two? Family vacations can be stressful, and sometimes it can be a real pain to get everyone to get into the spirit doing the same thing, without whining or eyes rolling. And how many memories do we really get to have fun reminiscing over as the years pass?

You want a REAL ghost tour.

US Ghost Adventure tours are the real deal. One of the first things you’ll notice, that makes us different than the other ghost tours in town, is we don’t walk the traditional paths. And we don’t use silly costumes or lanterns. Why? Because we only walk the paths of the stories we have fact-checked and verified. We explore real haunted sites across the U.S.

You have a tight schedule.

US Ghost Adventure tours are easy to fit into most schedules, because we run late in the evening. We have different start times in the evening to choose from, including with ghost tours starting at 8pm and 9pm, and the Ultimate tour at 10pm. Finally, at 90-125 minutes long, you can almost always find a tour that fits your schedule.

You believe modern science has debunked ghosts.

This is our favorite. Not long ago, a pop-science article was published that claimed the Large Hadron Collider at CERN had debunked ghosts. In reality, a scientist named Brian Cox mused that if there were a medium that could preserve a person (something like a ‘soul’), he believes he would have seen evidence of it in his particle physics work.

Colonial Williamsburg Ghost Tour: A Review of “Ghosts Among Us”

This Williamsburg Ghost Tour actually takes you into the historic buildings! #williamsburg #ghosttour

There are plenty of ghosts tours to choose from in Colonial Williamsburg, but by far, the best one in my book is the Ghosts Among Us Tour, offered by the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation.

The only tour in Williamsburg Ghost Tour that actually takes you inside historic buildings, tickets can be purchased at the Lumber House Ticket Office or online at https://www.colonialwilliamsburg.com/plan/calendar/ghosts-amongst-us .

We paid $18 per person for this experience, and it was well worth every penny.

This Williamsburg Ghost Tour actually takes you into the historic buildings! #williamsburg #ghosttour

Our tour started at the Lumber House Ticket Office on the Duke of Gloucester Street.   We checked in at the window where we were assigned to our group for the evening.

Our ticket taker then directed us to a meeting location just a few steps away from the ticket office.  After a very short wait, our guide, dressed in colonial clothing, met us on the street, carrying a lantern with a single candle burning in it.

Our tour guide then set the mood for the tour, explaining a few rules and a bit about the history of hauntings in Colonial Williamsburg.

The James Geddy House

This Williamsburg Ghost Tour actually takes you into the historic buildings! #williamsburg #ghosttour

Our first stop was the James Geddy House.  We were escorted inside, and seated in a parlor, illuminated only by a single candle.

Our guide then introduced us to our first storyteller, an indentured servant girl who told the ghoulish tale of the murder of her friend Jenny.  The storyteller was fully in character the whole time, and definitely made the story come to life.

At the end of her tale, we were escorted out of the building and down the Palace Green, while our tour guide elaborated on the story, giving us a more historical perspective.

The George Wythe House

This Williamsburg Ghost Tour actually takes you into the historic buildings! #williamsburg #ghosttour

The next stop on our Williamsburg Ghost Tour was the George Wythe House.  Lanterns lined the front stairs, where we were escorted inside to another parlor.

Our second storyteller was escorted in and told us a tale about the specter of Death.  Again, the story was elaborate and beautifully told to our group.

After the conclusion of this story, our tour guide escorted us outside, and elaborated on some of the superstitions and myths of colonial times.

Our final stop on the tour was in the Governor’s Palace.  Unlike our other encounters, this time our storyteller was already seated in the parlor waiting for us when we entered the room.

A disheveled looking man in his early 50’s, he sat in a chair next to a single candle and began spinning a tale of crime, punishment, and murder.  His eerie laugh made the experience very engaging.

When he stood at the end of the story, revealing his full height, it only added to the intimidation and tension of the story.

Our tour concluded with our guide leading us back out onto the Palace Green, and answering questions for us.

The tour was extremely enjoyable.  The stories were scary without being overly gory or inappropriate.

There was enough tension to make listeners jumpy in a fun way without terrifying anyone so much that they would be upset by it.  The actors were very good, especially in the close quarters of the parlors, and made the experience spooky and fun.

The tour isn’t recommended for children ages 12 and under, and I would agree.  The subject matter, especially in the last story in the Governor’s Palace, would likely be troubling to younger kids.

There was a child on our tour who appeared to be about 9 or 10 years old.  The child seemed like she was a bit too scared, her family skipped out on the last stop on the tour.

I would definitely take this Williamsburg Ghost Tour again, and would recommend it to anyone visiting Colonial Williamsburg who enjoys this kind of thing.

Colonial Williamsburg is oftentimes associated with the Revolutionary War era, but the old capital city is home to many Civil War-related sites as well. A nighttime stroll along Duke of Gloucester Street will reveal headquarters, barracks, arsenals, hospitals, and, some say, even ghosts!
