Trek Remedy 9.8 Review

Chico (13 of 14)

  • 650b Wheels
  • 66.5/66.0 degree head tube angle
  • Carbon Front triangle and seat stays
  • Sizes: 15.5″ 17.5″ 18.5″ 19.5″ 21.5″
  • 150mm travel front and rear
  • MSRP: $5299.99

The Remedy has been a staple in Trek’s line up for 10 years now. The 2017 Remedy has received some big improvements from past models. Notably, the Remedy line is now 650b only. Gone is the Remedy 29. Additionally, travel has been increased again to 150mm from the previous versions’ 140mm. Reach and wheelbase are longer and the headtube angle is 1 degree more slack, making it a much more capable machine. The versatility of this bike is amazing however. So far I have raced the Mammoth Kamikaze Bike Games Enduro, the collegiate downhill race at University of Nevada Reno(a course so gnarly that an unfortunate rider broke his back and another suffered a broken collarbone), and ridden several long days in the saddle with over 6,000 feet of climbing, all with ease!

The Remedy 9.8 comes with a Shimano XT 2×11 drivetrain, Rockshox Pike RC 150mm Fork, Rockshox Deluxe Shock with Reaktiv Damper, 125mm Bontrager Drop Line dropper post, XT Brakes, and Bontrager Line Comp Wheels.

You might have noticed a distinct difference in this bike’s downtube compared to a your traditional mountain bike. Trek designed this bike with a straight downtube that does not have a relief for the front fork. This creates a stiffer and lighter frame. To prevent contact between the fork crown and the frame, a molded rubber guard is glued to the downtube. Additionally, Trek designed a special keyed headset that prevents the fork and bars from rotating far enough to hit the frame.Sorry, no X-Ups or Bar Spins on this bike.

Cables are all internally routed on this frame. It’s not the best cable management I’ve seen, but certainly not the worst. All cables are “free” inside the frame but to control rattling a tab in the downtube allows a zip tie to wrangle all the cables and keep things quiet.

trek 2016 remedy 9.8

It is important to note how I have my suspension set up before we get into the details. The shock is running 30% sag in the open compression setting and rebound 4 clicks from open. The fork is at 25% sag with 3 of Fox’s orange volume reducers. Low speed compression two clicks from open, high speed compression 11 clicks from open, and rebound is right in the middle. I like my suspension to be progressive to help prevent wallowing and hard bottom-outs. Additionally, I am 5,8″ and I am riding a 17.5″ frame.

Our Remedy has a few changes from the stock spec:

  • Fox Float 36
  • 1×11 conversion
  • Sram Guide Brakes
  • Bontrager SE5 tires

We took the Remedy out to Bidwell Park in Chico, California to put it through its paces. If you’ve ridden here then you know that the park consists of:

  • Steep lava rock
  • Loose lava rock
  • More lava rock

There’s a reason they say, “If you can ride Bidwell, you can ride anywhere.” Most locals opt for burly bikes in the 140mm-160mm range as their daily drivers here. Its no wonder why when most of the trails look like this:

Chico (4 of 14)

The Remedy easily carries itself up whatever hill you throw at it. With a seat tube angle of 74.5 degrees, your legs are positioned right above the pedals to put down the power. When pedaling out of the saddle there is a subtle amount of bobbing; even with 30% sag. Up technical single track or smooth gravel, I never have found it necessary to switch the shock into a stiffer setting. When the grade gets the front wheel stay’s planted to the ground without much body position change.

With 150mm of front and rear travel, of course this bike is going to get rad on the descents. However, the bike has an overwhelming playful personality. The snappy handling yet burly confidence means you feel like a kangaroo on a trampoline, barely touching the ground. I noticed myself having more fun and carrying more speed on flatter trails and parts of the ride I don’t normally look forward too.

The Rockshox Deluxe took a while to get setup to my preference. After adding a few volume spacers the shock had no problem soaking up small chatter and big hits.

Accelerating from stops and out of corners is fast and easy. Typically bikes similar to this have a bit of a delay from when you start pedaling, the Remedy seems to respond quicker.

There are a few things that Trek missed the mark on. With both Sram and Shimano offering wide range options for their 1×11 drivetrains, a bike like this should come spec’ed without a front derailleur. That is somewhat rider preference, but after replacing the stock cassette with an 11-46 I haven’t found myself needing an easier gear.

Next, something that is kind of inherent in Trek’s frame design but nonetheless annoying is the seatpost limits the bike to be compatible with shorter dropper posts only. If you look, there is quite a bit of post sticking out from the frame. The problem is, in order to accommodate the rocker link, Trek puts a bend in the seatube, limiting the space for a longer dropper post. It’s not too noticeable, but I would prefer to have a 150mm post and have the seat well out of the way.

I did have the rubber bumper on the downtube fall off while riding in Mammoth too. Luckily, the Trek’s demo tour was down there and they hooked it up with a new one, but I’ll be keeping electrical tape on there to keep it secured.

Chico (12 of 14)

I’ve been riding the Remedy for a little over a month and over 200 miles. I felt really comfortable on this bike from the first ride. While its a playful bike it still maintains a good balance as a capable descender. Considering the carbon frame and that the build kit comes with powerful brakes, a solid drivetrain, carbon bars, and a dropper post, the bike is a good value. The wheels have been holding up well even after taking beatings from Downieville and Mammoth. This bike is an excellent choice for anyone looking for an all around trail bike or enduro rig for under $5,500.

What travel are the forks

Trek specs the bike with 150mm. I swapped the pike with the Float 36 that has 160mm. Raised the bottom bracket about 3mm and the head angle is 65.7 degrees in the low setting.

Oh nice! I have the remedy 8 2017 and have changed the Beatles and drivetrain and wanted to change the fork to the fox 36 160mm would u recommend ?

If you find yourself needing a little more travel, I totally recommend it.

Really enjoying your yt channel and this website. You’ve got an excellent thing goin here, keep it up!

It’s nice to hear you’re enjoying it. Thanks for the support!

Really like your review, and the video is insane, I find it hard to believe you can stay on the trail going that fast. I feel my tires washing out just watching the video. BTW, I just bought the 2017 Stumpjumper with the Purgatory tires, which I’ve found do not have good off camber edge grip at all when trying to cling to the edge of rutted sections. I Have WTB Velociraptor (rear) and Weirwolf (front) on my old Enduro which have excellent grip and controlled braking (another thing the Purgatory’s lack). I read you change the tires on the Trek, any recommendations based experience (I’m in SoCal with similar trail conditions to many of your videos). Thanks and keep rippin!

Awesome! Yeah I swapped out the stock tires for the SE5. They dont have any intermediate knobs so they have more grip overall but you really have to lean the bike in order for the tires to work. The Specialized Butcher and Maxxis Minions are good options as well.

” Raised the bottom bracket about 3mm and the head angle is 65.7 degrees in the low setting.” sure?

trek says 65 degrees for the RSL model with the 160mm lyric in the frame position “high”

The difference in geometry is because the RSL uses a different rear triangle than the non RSL frame. Additionally, Fox forks have a shorter axle to crown length than RockShox.

ok, thanks. didn’t know that!

i called trek today and they said the frame is 100% identical. so no difference between rsl and non rsl models on the frame.

where did u get this information from?

Well the RSL chainstay does not allow for a front derailleur, so they certainly are different. I work at a Trek store. I know for certain that the 65.7 HA is accurate on my bike, because I’ve measured it.

Really enjoy watching your youtube channel, and your reviews are very informative! looking forward to seeing more from you.

I have a question on fork choice. You went with a fox 36 up front is it better than the lyrik and Do you think it’s better with out the travel adjust which comes on the bike? Thanks for your time.

The complete build the bike came with had a 150mm Pike RC. I’ve never like travel adjust forks. To me its not worth the weight and I don’t think I’d use it too often. Both are good forks, I just prefer Fox.

I wasn’t sure if their was a performance reason for going with fox over Rock shox. Like suppleness, rigidity etc. I mentioned the lyrik because for a bike like the remedy it seems like it would benefit from a burlier fork like the 36 you went with or the lyrik. Is yours the rc2 or fit 4? Thanks!

The 36 is definitely stiffer than the Pike and has much more adjustability. Fox is a lot more reliable as well. It’s the FIT RC2 damper.

How tall are you and what size frame? thanks for the review!

I am 5,8″ and I am riding a 17.5″ frame

How did this bike manuel and jump? thank you

Would shorter cranks be worth the upgrade to allow switching the mino link to reduce pedal strikes and gaining a slacker ride? Maybe the F36’s would also help?

Hello, I’m thinking on picking the 2018 model and I’m interested into known how the shock has hold up on the long term. I’m little bit worried about reliability as its a proprietary technology and the shock length is not a standard one.

Also I’m interested on your thoughts about a 170 36 up front

Cheers from Madrid

The shock did hold up for me. I think 170 up front would be a little big.

I get from your previous answer that the HA with a 160 36 is steeper than with the stock 150 pike so that means shorter a2c. I’m trying to preserve the stack (2018 has a 160 lyric), but maybe you’re right and the difference in travel will not play well.

Hi, I’m considering a bike exchange. I own a Giant Reign advance in 2015 and am considering switching to trek remedy 9.8 2018 (with lyric). I would like to know your opinion, basically the trek will go up better than the reign, but down?

Thanks from portugal

I rode one of the the new Reigns. I think the reign is a better all around bike and a better value

Hi Just wondering how you found the 17.5 inch frame. At 5.8 I was wondering if it is a bit short. I am 5.6 and thought that the 18.5 inch frame might be a better fit. I know there is a lot to bike geometry but the reach and effective top tube measurements of the 18.5 look better although the wheel base is starting to stretch out a lot on the 18.5. Cheers

I just went off of the reach compared to the bike I was riding before the Trek. It might have been a tiny bit small but it wasn’t a problem.

Would love to see a review of the 2018 model. I’ve only seen a couple, and one (MTBR) was all about the thru-shaft shock, for the most part. I’m thinking of making the move from 26 (I have a Mojo SL) to the Remedy. A bit of a jump in head angle, but all reports are that it’s a very good all-round bike. Thanks.

Trek went deep for 2017 and launched all new models of their Fuel EX, Remedy, and Slash platforms. At their launch event last year in Squamish we were introduced to and rode the first two, but only got a sneak peek of the Slash as its announcement followed about a month later. Go here for a full run down on spec, geo, pricing, and my early ride impressions of the Fuel EX and Remedy, and you can read Perry's Slash review here. The reason I'm starting this Remedy review with all of that info is because Trek didn't just release new versions of those bikes, they also changed the way the lineup looked:

Trek Remedy 9.8 29 Review

trek 2016 remedy 9.8

The Trek Remedy 9.8 29 is the jar of marmite of the bike world, and – as ever – the 29er wheels continue to divide opinion in the enduro scene. But with riders from teams like Trek or BMC managing to prove time and time again just how fast you can ride them, we’ve put the Remedy 29 to the test to find out whether it can hack it as we drag it out for daily post-work rides.

Das Trek Remedy 9.8 29, für 4.999 € erhältlich.

Designed to live up to its name, the Remedy is Trek’s solution to an all-round enduro bike built to conquer any situation. Trek claim to have created a mountain bike for mountain bikers, one that will score full marks when it comes to performance and versatility. Or at least, that’s what the website says. The glance at the geometry reveals how this versatility is achieved: with a 1,151 mm wheelbase (frame height 18.5″, low geometry) the Remedy avoids being too long, which lends the bike its playful and agile nature despite the 435 mm chainstay and 417 mm reach. The 67.5° head angle and the low bottom bracket render it stable and predictable. What’s more, Trek has equipped the Remedy with the Mino Link adjustable geometry. If you’re after an improved climb or a more agile bike without having to forsake any travel, the geometry can easily be switched into a steeper position.

An overview of the Remedy 29’s geometry.

Aside from the geometry, the actual frame deserves a closer look. The stunning production of the shiny carbon top tube with a metal flake finish renders the Remedy with an aesthetic more suited to a hot rod than a mountain bike. Under the paintwork, there’s a revised carbon version of the Remedy frame, which weighs 400g less than the aluminium frame. The Remedy’s rear end is still made of aluminium, which piques our interest even further. Trek’s patented Full Floater technology explains how the rear shock has pivots on both sides. This results in more responsiveness and a better reaction to a wider range of impacts – as well as ensuring the 140 mm of travel feels far more generous. Moreover, the frame comes with the new Boost standard and is compatible with Shimano’s electronic Di2 shifting.

Der Boost-Standard soll den 29er-Laufrädern noch mehr Steifigkeit verleihen.

While the frame is already electronic shifting compatible, it features the tried and tested mechanical SRAM X1 drivetrain with a 32-tooth chainring and aluminium cranks. For suspension, the Remedy relies on the RockShox PIKE forks and FOX FLOAT Performance rear shock, including the DRCV air chamber that was designed exclusively for Trek. The Roam 30 wheels also hail from Shimano, as do the XT brakes. Not forgetting comfort, the RockShox Reverb dropper post offers 125 mm of much-appreciated adjustment.

Der Antrieb besteht aus SRAM X1-Komponenten.

The bike features many parts courtesy of Trek’s own Bontrager, which are high quality but affordable, ensuring that the price tag doesn’t go above 5,000 € – admittedly still far from a bargain.

On the trails

Das Trek Remedy 29 haben wir in unterschiedlichstem Terrain getestet. Neben Ausfahrten auf unseren Hometrails hat es uns auch in die Provence begleitet.

The frame and the choice of parts size up well and strike us as well selected for its purpose as a trail and racing bike. But naturally, this further piques our interest as to how the Remedy is going to live up to these assumptions.

On climbs the bike gleefully plays its 29er joker card, reliably overcoming everything the trail throws at it. The rear takes on a calmer nature by switching on the low-speed damping compression on the FOX FLOAT shock, even if you’re still low in the sag. Together with the steep 67.5° seat angle (tested, slack geometry position) and the well-considered reach, the riding position is exceptionally comfortable and effective.

Das Remedy überrascht mit hervorragender Lenkpräzision.

On downhills the Remedy immediately surprised us with its exceptional handling, giving us the satisfying feeling as if we were taking the corners on rails. You often need some time to get used to a bike with bigger wheels but this wasn’t at all necessary in this case. Playful and agile in virtually any situation, it was just a case of raising the stem with a few spacers to ensure that the front wheel has enough pressure on it. The Bontrager tyre combination only offers limited grip, but the reliable Shimano XT brakes have enough power. While the FOX FLOAT shock goes through its travel quickly, the RockShox PIKE at the front remained higher in its travel. To ensure both the front and the rear work in harmony, we recommend having the shock in the middle trail mode, and air volume spacers could be of use.

In steilem Gelände überrollen die 29"-Laufräder zuverlässig auch größere Hindernisse.

On steep and techy terrain, the 29″ wheels glide comfortably over big bumps, and in fast sections, the Remedy shows no sign of twitchiness. The riding position (test frame height: 18.5″) for a rider of 183cm is really stable, and a shorter stem would boost this confidence even further.

Beide Laufräder haben im Laufe der Testdauer an Steifigkeit verloren.

When it comes to rigidity, the Remedy’s frame gives no rise for complaint, although the SRAM RISE 30 wheels couldn’t match their owner. In general, the spoke tension was too low, which is particularly problematic when you’re riding full gas on a 29er. During our testing these got looser and looser, resulting in the front wheel kicking out so far in a burm that the tyre just wouldn’t get through the crown of the forks – by this time it was too late to true them.

Das Remedy kombiniert verschiedenste Eigenschaften extrem gut!

It’s not easy to design a decent 29er enduro bike, but Trek haven’t half done a bad job with the Remedy 29. Uniting some remarkably contrasting characteristics, the bike is well suited for post-work rides and hardcore enduro races without the need for any alterations. With its stunning carbon frame and finish, it’s a shame that certain parts don’t quite live up to the standard you’d expect from a bike in this price range. Overlooking the issue with the wheels, we enjoyed the responsive ride, adding further fuel to our in-house oversize wheel debate.

Trek Remedy 9.8: An All-Mountain, Cure for the Common Trail

trek 2016 remedy 9.8

It took a few years for all-mountain cross-country bikes to come into their own. Originally, when longish-travel cross-country bikes rolled onto the scene, they were a compromise between climbing and descending prowess. Today, thanks to lightweight frame materials, tubeless wheels, new gearing combinations and air-sprung suspension, they’re nearly the best of both worlds. Trek has two lines of bikes that can be categorized as all-mountain: the Remedy and the Scratch Air. The Remedy line is rooted in Trek’s cross-country family, while the Scratch bike’s pedigree doesn’t fall far from the Session downhill rig family tree. There are six bikes in the Remedy line, ranging from the $2729 Remedy 7 to the premium $8399 Remedy 9.9. Our Remedy 9.8 test bike shares the same carbon frame as the 9.9, but the price is more down-to-earth at $5249.

WHO IS IT MADE FOR? The term “trail rider” really just means mountain biker, and this bike is made for mountain bikers who enjoy pushing themselves to become better bike handlers on each ride. The Remedy 9.8 is designed to climb like a pure cross-country machine, yet provide extra travel for descending confidence.

WHAT IS IT MADE FROM? The Remedy 9.8 is packed with hidden features. The foundation is a carbon fiber frame that is handmade in Trek’s Waterloo, Wisconsin, factory. With 6 inches of front and rear travel, the Remedy utilizes Trek’s ABP (Active Braking Pivot) Convert, which makes the 142×12-millimeter rear axle the rear pivot. The ABP suspension system has a Full Floater shock mount that attaches the shock to two moving linkage points to increase the shock’s ability to respond to bumps. The unique dual-chamber Fox DRCV shock was designed to perform efficiently under pedaling, yet have superb performance on large impacts. The carbon frame features Trek’s Carbon Armor downtube protection, and both the chainstays and seat stays are made from carbon. The Remedy 9.8 is available in five frame sizes.

WHICH COMPONENTS STAND OUT? Trek works closely with Fox Racing Shox for front and rear custom-tuned suspension. The DRCV shock is a creation you’ll only find on Trek bikes, and it offers a unique high-performance ride quality. The Fox 32 fork has TALAS adjustable travel between 4.7 and 6 inches, a 15-millimeter axle and a preset low-speed compression setting tuned into the design. New to the Remedy this year are the DT Swiss M 1800 wheels and XR4 Team 2.3-inch-wide tires. The Crankbrothers Joplin dropper seatpost is a welcome sight on a bike designed for shredding technical terrain.

trek 2016 remedy 9.8

HOW DOES IT PERFORM? Ergonomics: To reach proper pedaling position (knees over toes) in the saddle, we slammed the Bontrager saddle all the way forward. We were struck by the narrow 26-inch-wide handlebar on a bike with 6 inches of travel, especially after recently reviewing the 4.7-inch-travel Trek Fuel EX 9.7, which had perfectly spec’ed 27.5-inch-wide bars. Suspension is your friend, as long as you set it up properly. Use the included clip-on fork and shock sag measuring device to get your ride dialed. Pedaling: For as well as Trek’s ABP suspension performs, it relies heavily on the low-speed compression damping of Fox’s ProPedal shock feature to prevent the suspension from “bobbing” under pedaling forces. On moderately technical flat terrain, we’d swap between running the shock open and in the second of the three ProPedal settings. On fire road sections, the ProPedal feature is helpful if you’re heading uphill. With Shimano’s 3×10 XT drivetrain, you’re bound to find a gear ratio ideal for your fitness level; although most riders will still spend the majority of their time in the middle chainring. Climbing: For a 6-inch-travel rig, the Remedy is an uphill charger. Climbing with the Remedy’s ProPedal feature on makes a big difference in how efficiently the bike climbs on smooth terrain. Like most regions in the U.S., our trails range from fire road climbs to loose, rocky and technical uphill grunts. When the terrain features become punishing, it’s a good time to run the DRCV shock wide open for a plusher ride and improved traction. The new Bontrager XR4 tires have tank-tread-like grip on steep and loose terrain. We never had to worry about the rear end breaking free during all-or-nothing surges. We were able to crest the harshest of climbs in the 32-tooth middle chainring and 36-tooth rear cog. On meandering uphill fire roads, our best results came from utilizing the 42-tooth big ring with the wide range of rear cassette options, with cross-chaining no longer an issue. Only on extremely cruel uphills did we drop into our granny gear safety net. Although the Fox fork has a TALAS travel adjust feature, we preferred climbing with the fork at full extension. Simply leaning forward muted any slight front-end wandering. Cornering: With geometry that leans ever so slightly towards the traditional trailbike end of the spectrum, the Remedy makes easy work of tight switchback corners. The Remedy is one of the most balanced bikes we’ve ridden when slamming corners at speed. A rider can drive the bottom bracket, figuratively, into a harsh rut or terrain feature to change direction at the apex of a corner, and the Remedy quickly stands to attention, exiting in the desired line choice.  Braking: Of course, it’s always best to brake early and ride out the terrain off the brakes when possible. But if you’re actively pursuing terrain worthy of all 6 of the Remedy’s inches of travel, that technique is not always possible. Trek’s ABP suspension does a standout job keeping the bike’s suspension balanced while you are on the binders on steep and rough terrain. Every time we ride Avid’s X0 brakes, we’re blown away by how consistent the feel is. They’re light enough for a cross-country bike but powerful enough for a downhill machine. It doesn’t get much better than that. Descending: With aggressive tires, 6 inches of active suspension, and front and rear thru-axles, the Remedy 9.8 is a taut package that holds a line on demanding terrain. The ups and downs of Crankbrothers’ Joplin posts have been well documented in MBA. The Joplin 4 on the Remedy worked well, and, unlike previous samples, remained reliable. However, the posts’ side-to-side wobble was apparent from the first ride. Chain retention is a major issue with full-suspension bikes, especially on longer-travel renditions. We dropped chains descending aboard the recently reviewed Giant Reign 0 and this Remedy 9.8. The best solution we’ve ridden was a 2×10 setup utilizing a shift guide. The jury may be out on which gearing option is best for most people (2×10 or 3×10), but when it comes to chain retention, the answer is obvious.

trek 2016 remedy 9.8

TRICKS, UPGRADES OR TIPS? The Bontrager XR4 tires may have a tank-tread-like grip for climbing, but they roll about as efficiently as a tank tread, too. If your conditions are largely loose-over-hardpack terrain, we suggest swapping the rear tire with Bontrager’s new XR2 tire for faster-rolling rubber that still has bite. The Remedy’s narrow 26-inch-wide handlebar makes the front end twitchy when descending at speed. If this Remedy were to call our garage home, we’d run Answer’s 28-inch Pro Taper Carbon bar instead.

BUYING ADVICE Trek’s Remedy is a perfect example of a 6-inch-travel bike that is drawing more cross-country riders away from their short-travel machines. It climbs remarkably well, is lightweight for the amount of travel, and descends with nearly error-proof handling. Our current test stable includes cross-country bikes ranging in travel from 3.9 inches to 6 inches, and for nearly every ride we find ourselves reaching for the Remedy 9.8.

We may store and/or access information on a device and process personal data, such as your IP address and browsing data, for personalised advertising and content, advertising and content measurement, audience research and services development. Additionally, we may utilize precise geolocation data and identification through device scanning.

Privacy Overview

  • Most purposes explained in this notice rely on the storage or accessing of information from your device when you use an app or visit a website. For example, a vendor or publisher might need to store a cookie on your device during your first visit on a website, to be able to recognise your device during your next visits (by accessing this cookie each time).
  • A car manufacturer wants to promote its electric vehicles to environmentally conscious users living in the city after office hours. The advertising is presented on a page with related content (such as an article on climate change actions) after 6:30 p.m. to users whose non-precise location suggests that they are in an urban zone.
  • A large producer of watercolour paints wants to carry out an online advertising campaign for its latest watercolour range, diversifying its audience to reach as many amateur and professional artists as possible and avoiding showing the ad next to mismatched content (for instance, articles about how to paint your house). The number of times that the ad has been presented to you is detected and limited, to avoid presenting it too often.
  • If you read several articles about the best bike accessories to buy, this information could be used to create a profile about your interest in bike accessories. Such a profile may be used or improved later on, on the same or a different website or app to present you with advertising for a particular bike accessory brand. If you also look at a configurator for a vehicle on a luxury car manufacturer website, this information could be combined with your interest in bikes to refine your profile and make an assumption that you are interested in luxury cycling gear.
  • An apparel company wishes to promote its new line of high-end baby clothes. It gets in touch with an agency that has a network of clients with high income customers (such as high-end supermarkets) and asks the agency to create profiles of young parents or couples who can be assumed to be wealthy and to have a new child, so that these can later be used to present advertising within partner apps based on those profiles.
  • An online retailer wants to advertise a limited sale on running shoes. It wants to target advertising to users who previously looked at running shoes on its mobile app. Tracking technologies might be used to recognise that you have previously used the mobile app to consult running shoes, in order to present you with the corresponding advertisement on the app.
  • A profile created for personalised advertising in relation to a person having searched for bike accessories on a website can be used to present the relevant advertisement for bike accessories on a mobile app of another organisation.
  • You read several articles on how to build a treehouse on a social media platform. This information might be added to a profile to mark your interest in content related to outdoors as well as do-it-yourself guides (with the objective of allowing the personalisation of content, so that for example you are presented with more blog posts and articles on treehouses and wood cabins in the future).
  • You have viewed three videos on space exploration across different TV apps. An unrelated news platform with which you have had no contact builds a profile based on that viewing behaviour, marking space exploration as a topic of possible interest for other videos.
  • You read articles on vegetarian food on a social media platform and then use the cooking app of an unrelated company. The profile built about you on the social media platform will be used to present you vegetarian recipes on the welcome screen of the cooking app.
  • You have viewed three videos about rowing across different websites. An unrelated video sharing platform will recommend five other videos on rowing that may be of interest to you when you use your TV app, based on a profile built about you when you visited those different websites to watch online videos.
  • You have clicked on an advertisement about a “black Friday” discount by an online shop on the website of a publisher and purchased a product. Your click will be linked to this purchase. Your interaction and that of other users will be measured to know how many clicks on the ad led to a purchase.
  • You are one of very few to have clicked on an advertisement about an “international appreciation day” discount by an online gift shop within the app of a publisher. The publisher wants to have reports to understand how often a specific ad placement within the app, and notably the “international appreciation day” ad, has been viewed or clicked by you and other users, in order to help the publisher and its partners (such as agencies) optimise ad placements.
  • You have read a blog post about hiking on a mobile app of a publisher and followed a link to a recommended and related post. Your interactions will be recorded as showing that the initial hiking post was useful to you and that it was successful in interesting you in the related post. This will be measured to know whether to produce more posts on hiking in the future and where to place them on the home screen of the mobile app.
  • You were presented a video on fashion trends, but you and several other users stopped watching after 30 seconds. This information is then used to evaluate the right length of future videos on fashion trends.
  • The owner of an online bookstore wants commercial reporting showing the proportion of visitors who consulted and left its site without buying, or consulted and bought the last celebrity autobiography of the month, as well as the average age and the male/female distribution of each category. Data relating to your navigation on its site and to your personal characteristics is then used and combined with other such data to produce these statistics.
  • An advertiser wants to better understand the type of audience interacting with its adverts. It calls upon a research institute to compare the characteristics of users who interacted with the ad with typical attributes of users of similar platforms, across different devices. This comparison reveals to the advertiser that its ad audience is mainly accessing the adverts through mobile devices and is likely in the 45-60 age range.
  • A technology platform working with a social media provider notices a growth in mobile app users, and sees based on their profiles that many of them are connecting through mobile connections. It uses a new technology to deliver ads that are formatted for mobile devices and that are low-bandwidth, to improve their performance.
  • An advertiser is looking for a way to display ads on a new type of consumer device. It collects information regarding the way users interact with this new kind of device to determine whether it can build a new mechanism for displaying advertising on this type of device.
  • A travel magazine has published an article on its website about the new online courses proposed by a language school, to improve travelling experiences abroad. The school’s blog posts are inserted directly at the bottom of the page, and selected on the basis of your non-precise location (for instance, blog posts explaining the course curriculum for different languages than the language of the country you are situated in).
  • A sports news mobile app has started a new section of articles covering the most recent football games. Each article includes videos hosted by a separate streaming platform showcasing the highlights of each match. If you fast-forward a video, this information may be used to select a shorter video to play next.
  • An advertising intermediary delivers ads from various advertisers to its network of partnering websites. It notices a large increase in clicks on ads relating to one advertiser, and uses data regarding the source of the clicks to determine that 80% of the clicks come from bots rather than humans.
  • Clicking on a link in an article might normally send you to another page or part of the article. To achieve this, 1°) your browser sends a request to a server linked to the website, 2°) the server answers back (“here is the article you asked for”), using technical information automatically included in the request sent by your device, to properly display the information / images that are part of the article you asked for. Technically, such exchange of information is necessary to deliver the content that appears on your screen.

Quick Ride Review: 2017 Trek Remedy 9.8

The not-so-minor details.

Trek Remedy 9.8

Trek Bicycles Australia

AUD6,799.00

Bigger and angrier than before. Ideal for 27.5" wheel fans. Plush and grippy.

Double chainring not our choice.

Ryan Walsch from Trek gives the stiffer and longer Remedy a good old shove trough a bermed turn.

For 2017 suspension bumps up to 150mm of travel and slackens off the head angle, now adjustable between 66.5 and 66-degrees. Reach has been pushed out quite a lot as well, by 11mm on a size 19″ (large) frame, and short 50mm stems are employed across the range.

With more travel and such aggressive geometry, the Remedy can be ridden harder, so Trek needed to make the bike stiffer. The Remedy and the Fuel us the new Straight Shot down tube, the massive, boxy down tube shaves a few grams and gives the front serious stiffness. But with the wide fork crowns of boost spacing forks they ran into clearance issues so to stop the crowns impacting the frame when the wheel turns right around, they came up with a headset that stops the rotation, ‘Knock Block’. In addition to the headset there are bumpers underneath the head tube area to further protect the frame.

The Knock Block headset prevents frame damage in a crash from bars and forks spinning around.

The wide Bontrager Line rims, grippy XR4 tyres and big 35mm stem clamp give the Remedy a far tougher appearance than the 2016 model, these were the areas we upgraded our long term test bike last year, Trek are onto it!

A complete Shimano XT groupset is always a good sight, the 9.8 is covered in the stuff. The brakes are especially nice and Trek are using the I-Spec single handlebar clamp for the brake and shifter to keep the cockpit as neat as it can be.

RockShox Pike with 150mm of travel.

The 9.8 does have a double chainring, which isn’t our cup of tea but sure can come in handy on the longer climbs out there.

We spent a whole year aboard the hot green/yellow 2016 model 9.8 and after just a quick ride on this one we’re very impressed. It feels a whole lot more robust and the rear suspension feels more planted, and with the wide rims and insanely good XR4 tyres it feels great at speed.

Trek Remedy 9.8_LOW7530

With 29ers on either side of the Remedy in the Trek range with the 130mm Fuel and 160mm Slash, the 150mm travel Remedy is a bike that will enjoy a jump, drop, drift and a tight line on the trail.

Stay tuned for more as we get our hands on a Trek Remedy for a proper review.

First refuelling for Russia’s Akademik Lomonosov floating NPP

!{Model.Description}

trek 2016 remedy 9.8

The FNPP includes two KLT-40S reactor units. In such reactors, nuclear fuel is not replaced in the same way as in standard NPPs – partial replacement of fuel once every 12-18 months. Instead, once every few years the entire reactor core is replaced with and a full load of fresh fuel.

The KLT-40S reactor cores have a number of advantages compared with standard NPPs. For the first time, a cassette core was used, which made it possible to increase the fuel cycle to 3-3.5 years before refuelling, and also reduce by one and a half times the fuel component in the cost of the electricity produced. The operating experience of the FNPP provided the basis for the design of the new series of nuclear icebreaker reactors (series 22220). Currently, three such icebreakers have been launched.

The Akademik Lomonosov was connected to the power grid in December 2019, and put into commercial operation in May 2020.

Electricity generation from the FNPP at the end of 2023 amounted to 194 GWh. The population of Pevek is just over 4,000 people. However, the plant can potentially provide electricity to a city with a population of up to 100,000. The FNPP solved two problems. Firstly, it replaced the retiring capacities of the Bilibino Nuclear Power Plant, which has been operating since 1974, as well as the Chaunskaya Thermal Power Plant, which is more than 70 years old. It also supplies power to the main mining enterprises located in western Chukotka. In September, a 490 km 110 kilovolt power transmission line was put into operation connecting Pevek and Bilibino.

8 Best American Mule Recipes

Dec 22, 2017

We think you'll agree with us when we say that any cocktail named after the United States of America must be a good one. The American Mule is no exception! In this post, we describe the 8 best American Mule cocktail recipes and discuss the interesting history of the American Mule. Read on to learn more!

Introduction

It is hard to imagine summer afternoons without those icy cold, tangy, fizzy, and refreshingly delectable drinks called cocktails. There are quite a few cocktail drinks popular in America, but the American Mule drink easily takes the cake.

One of the most popular cocktail drinks, the American Mule drink is perfect for all occasions. Be it a late night party when you really want to let your hair down, an outdoor barbeque, a gathering of friends reminiscing over old times, or just a lazy afternoon you happen to spend by yourself at home catching a movie or a sitcom, the American Mule is suited to all occasions.

But what exactly is an American Mule cocktail? Where did it originate? What sort of variations does it have and which are the most popular and delicious ones? Read on for the low-down on all this.

A Brief History of the American Mule (The Provenance)

The American Mule is a variation on the classic Moscow Mule cocktail. The name of the classic Mule cocktail is a bit misleading as it seems to hint at a Russian origin of the drink. The only link between Russia and the Moscow Mule cocktail is vodka – an alcoholic beverage that originated in Russia and Poland.

The classic mule cocktail that is now popularly known as the Moscow Mule cocktail was first mixed in the bar of Chatham Hotel in 1941. The ingredients used were two ounces of vodka, ginger beer, lemon and, of course, ice. Another story regarding the origin of the cocktail surfaced around 2007, but the Chatham version holds more water compared to the other.

The fact remains that the first mule cocktail was concocted in America itself (not in Russia) and it caught on like wildfire. Owing to its rising popularity, several versions of the Moscow Mule were concocted and the term ‘The Moscow Mule’ slowly metamorphosed into ‘The American Mule’ though the older term still continues to be widely used for the cocktail with original ingredients.

So, practically speaking, there is little difference in respect of the American Mule versus the Moscow Mule because both cocktails are fundamentally the same. The American Mule cocktail is now used to refer to the variations of the classic mule that either substitute Russian vodka with American vodka or other alcoholic beverages, or use some other ingredients to add a twist to the original recipe.

What Does It Taste Like?

The American Mule cocktail is a term applied to so many variations of the classic Mule cocktail that it is difficult to generalize as to what the American Mule tastes like. Different ingredients bring their own twist to this popular drink.

However, every variation on the American Mule retains the basic spicy and tangy flavors. The spicy flavor is the constant for the American Mule thanks to the ginger beer that is the mandatory ingredient. The touch of tanginess or sourness too is ubiquitous in an American Mule, owing to the use of lime juice.

At the end of the day, the American Mule is delicious and refreshing and guaranteed to lift your spirits.

How is the American Mule Cocktail Best Served?

Traditionally, Mule cocktails have been served in copper mugs . The reason being the cold copper has the tendency to increase the amount of bubbles in the carbonated ginger beer. The copper mugs also take on the cold temperature of the liquid.

However, the American Mule tastes equally good in a highball glass commonly used to serve other cocktails. More importantly, the American Mule has to be served on the rocks i.e. poured over ice (crushed ice accentuates the flavor of the drink).

The American Mule cocktail goes with a wide range of dishes and snacks that include fish, chicken, bacon, and Italian food items like pizzas and pastas. That makes it an ideal drink for all sorts of parties and get-together events.

Where Can You Grab One?

The American Mule is fast gaining in popularity and has become one of the most searched cocktails on the internet. If you're not in the mood to make your own, here is a list of some of the popular places to look for your fix of the American Mule.

How to Make an American Mule Cocktail

As you now know, the American Mule is basically a variant of the Moscow Mule cocktail. Sometimes, the terms are even used interchangeably. In other cases, variations of the American Mule vary from tradition by:

  • Retaining vodka, ginger beer, and lime, but also adding different ingredients like syrups, grapes, cucumbers, pumpkin puree, pomegranate juice, chocolate, mint, etc. for the purpose of adding a twist to the taste of the American Mule; or
  • Replacing vodka with other alcohol like whiskey and brandy and adding other ingredients that go with the recipe of your choice.

The basic ingredients and equipment needed to make an American Mule cocktail are listed below:
