The Many Meanings Behind Suri Cruise's Unique Name

From the minute Tom Cruise jumped on Oprah's couch declaring his love for Katie Holmes, we were hooked on the pairing. An unlikely romance, we couldn't help but follow the couple through their journey. When they announced Holmes was pregnant in 2005, we waited eagerly for the child's birth — and for what name TomKat would choose for their new addition.

Shortly after the birth of their daughter in 2006, Cruise told Vanity Fair he and Holmes received baby-name books from friends. "When we came to the name Suri, we both loved it. And we both said, 'Suri Cruise.'"

The actor also revealed they knew the meaning behind the name but that it didn't play a part in their decision to choose it. "We later found out that it meant 'red rose,' and that was just a bonus.'" Indeed, one of the Persian translations for the word "suri" is the rose, especially one with an intense fragrance. But it could also be translated as vitriol, mirth, a color, and an arrow. And that's the just tip of the iceberg where the name Suri is concerned. Switch to a different culture, and you'll find even more meanings. 

A rose, royalty, and a thief

The year 2006 was filled with celebrity babies, many with unusual names. Shiloh of the Jolie-Pitt clan, Moses of Paltrow-Martin, Grier of Shields-Henchy, Kingston of Stefani-Rossdale, and Ruby Sweetheart of Maguire-Meyer were included in the group, making it essential Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes dig deep for their own unique baby name.

Upon the birth of Suri, Cruise's camp released a statement that included the details of the child's name. In addition to mentioning the red rose connection, the announcement also noted Suri had a Hebrew meaning as well: "princess." It was later explained by a Hebrew linguistics expert that Suri itself isn't an official Hebrew name, but rather a nickname for "Sarah," which does officially mean "princess" in the Hebrew culture. 

Switching to an entirely different mode and a different language, if you look up the word "suri" in a Japanese dictionary, you'll find the definition to be a pickpocket, a thief who sneakily steals items right from your purses and pants. Perhaps Cruise and Holmes weren't up on their Japanese vocabulary? And they definitely weren't up on their beetle knowledge...

The buggy nature of Suri

Suri Cruise, who has no middle name according to her birth certificate, has been primarily raised by her mom; Katie Holmes divorced Tom Cruise in 2012, when their daughter was six years old. While Cruise's relationship with Suri  may be strained, Holmes is all in. "I am so grateful to be a mom to the sweetest daughter," Holmes declared in an Instagram post. She also shared her parenting method for Suri with InStyle . "My biggest goal has always been to nurture her into her individuality. To make sure she is 100 percent herself and strong, confident, and able. And to know it."

What she may not want her daughter to know, though, is that her name has a distinct relationship to bugs. According to the Slow Food Foundation for Biodiversity , "The term 'suri' means larvae of the Rhynchophourus palmarum, a beetle from the Curculionidae family." It also states the word hails from a small culture living in the Peruvian forest. 

Flowers, tiaras, stolen goods, and beetles — the name Suri has a plethora of meanings, but there is one it doesn't have: a connection to Apple's virtual assistant. Though it sounds similar to Siri, the Cruise offspring is no relation. Siri wasn't unleashed on the public until 2010, four years after her birth.

Since Tom Cruise Isn’t Involved In Her Life, Did Suri Change Her Last Name? 

Tom Cruise reportedly hasn't seen Suri in a decade, so she may be taking steps to disassociate from him.

Suri Cruise was instantly famous when she was born to Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise in 2006. The celebrity offspring was catapulted into even more fame during their highly publicized divorce in 2012 . To this day, few details are known about their divorce, other than the fact Katie was given primary custody of Suri , and the pre-teen allegedly hasn’t seen her father in years.

Given reports of their estranged relationship, there’s been speculation over whether Suri has ever considered changing her last name to have less of a connection to her famous father. There’s even been speculation over whether she’d change her first name to something less recognizable. Here’s everything we know.

Katie Holmes Reportedly Wanted To Change Suri’s Last Name

Tom and Katie’s divorce was quick, especially by Hollywood standards, with everything finalized within two weeks . Tom didn’t challenge Katie’s request for full custody, though reports at the time said he retained visitation rights. Both actors have been silent about their marriage and break-up in the years since, with rumors suggesting that a non-disclosure agreement may legally bar Katie from telling her side.

However, the former couple’s silence on their split didn’t stop the rumors from swirling. Shortly after the divorce was finalized, one report by Now Magazine claimed that Katie wanted to change their daughter Suri’s last name.

The U.K. publication claimed that the Dawson’s Creek actress wanted to make Suri’s last name Cruise her middle name, and then make Holmes their daughter’s last name. “She's been telling friends she wants to make Suri's middle name Cruise and change her surname to Holmes," a source claimed.

However, in the years that followed, it was never confirmed whether Katie legally changed Suri’s name. It’s unclear if she’d need Tom’s permission to do so. Even if she attempted to change it, Tom may have prevented her, if he had a say.

Perhaps even more bizarrely, it was reported in 2020 that Katie once again wanted to change her daughter’s last name – and was looking to get married for a second time to do so.

Katie was dating actor Jamie Foxx at the time, and though there were many reports that the two were looking into marriage, they ultimately broke up. Moreover, multiple reports debunked the theory that Katie would change Suri’s last name should she get married again.

Tom Cruise Allegedly Hasn’t Seen Suri In Years

For now, there’s nothing concrete to suggest that Suri has changed her name. But that’s not to say the teenager may not want to. She reportedly has no relationship with her father, which could motivate her to want to disassociate from his famous last name. One report says that Tom hasn’t seen Suri in a decade .

This isn’t because Tom is legally barred from having contact with his daughter. One source told Us Weekly that Tom has visitation rights but chooses not to see his youngest daughter. “He chooses not to because she is not a Scientologist,” the source said, adding that Tom does pay $30,000 a month in child support.

It’s widely speculated that Tom’s scientology beliefs fueled his divorce from Katie, and her desire to get Suri away from the controversial church led to her gaining primary custody and largely stepping away from the spotlight.

Suri Apparently Wants To Change Her First & Last Names

Even more telling, there’s been speculation that Suri wants to change her first name. Tom and Katie made headlines in 2006 when they chose the unusual moniker for their daughter. The name means ‘princess’ and ‘red rose, ’ and originates from Persian.

However, Suri may not be a fan of her unusual name. In 2012, a source told Perez Hilton that Katie calls her daughter Sarah in public, though it seemed to more of an effort to protect her privacy versus a name preference. The insider said they use Sarah since “everyone in the world knows Suri Cruise,” and that “if Katie or a babysitter says, ‘Suri,’ people immediately look to find her.”

Then, in 2020, when it was suggested Katie could be getting married again, another source said that Suri had been wanting a name change for years.

"Katie’s dad is looking at what can be done, but it’ll be like a poking a bear,” the insider explained. “It’s been since Suri was 12 that she's wanted this, mostly out as a gesture to her mom. They can’t ignore this forever."

It's highly plausible that Suri may want to change her last name given the lack of relationship she has with her father. And it’s also believable she may want to change her first name, not only because it’s unusual, but because it’s highly recognizable. But as of now, Tom and Katie’s daughter still appears to be legally named Suri Cruise.

Holmes attended Toledo’s Notre Dame Academy, a private, all-girls Catholic school, where she was a straight-A student. Holmes made her movie debut in The Ice Storm (1997), a drama about two wealthy families bored with their lives who seek an escape from their ennui in the form of substance abuse and secret affairs. Next, Holmes appeared in Adam Sandler ’s 2011 movie Jack and Jill as Erin, Jack’s wife. The film was panned by critics and reviewers alike, though globally it grossed nearly $150 million against its $79 million budget.

Alone Together

Written, directed by, and starring Holmes, Alone Together is a pandemic-era romantic drama. The 2022 movie features Holmes as June, one of two people who get double-booked in an Airbnb at the outset of the COVID-19 pandemic. Hijinks ensue and soon, June and Charlie, played by Jim Sturgess, develop feelings for each other. Complicating their budding relationship is the fact that June is already in a relationship with someone else.

In addition to her TV and movie roles, Holmes has also shown off her acting chops on and off Broadway. Suri Cruise turns 4 this Sunday, and Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes ' little princess still holds the crown for one of the most intriguing and original celebrity baby names.   Fans and even baby name experts were stumped when Tom and Katie announced that they'd chosen Suri, an obscure form of Sarah, which means princess in Hebrew ot "red rose in Persian.

PHOTOS: Meet Hollywood's new moms!   Quickly, other interpretations of the name and possible meanings sprang up.  Suri can be a breed of llama, another name for the Hindu God Krishna, an Ethiopian clan, a title used for Jain monks and a Japanese word for pickpocket.   Cruise and Holmes have never gone public with their reasons for choosing the unusual Suri, a name that hasn't caught on with the general baby-naming public.  Although such formerly-unknown names as Maddox and Harlow have climbed the popularity ladder after being selected for their offspring by celebrity parents, Suri remains far shy of the Top 1000 baby names list.

PHOTOS: Suri's lavish lifestyle!   Why has Suri not caught on the way other celebrity baby name choices have?  Suri Cruise is certainly an adorable child who gets plenty of attention.  And her name, in many ways, is cuter and more accessible than such appellations as Apple Martin or Bronx Mowgli .   But perhaps as a name Suri is too singular and too distinctive, so that any parent who chooses it (or girl who bears it) will always have to say, "Yes, like Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes' daughter."   Another unusual, for these times, aspect of Suri's moniker is that she has no middle name.  While a generation or two ago it may have been more common for children not to have a middle name, with the idea that they might acquire a confirmation name or a maiden name to eventually use in the middle, today one middle name is accepted practice. Two middle names – like Nicole Richie 's daughter Harlow Winter Kate Madden — is becoming unremarkable.

Suri Cruise (born in Santa Monica, Calif., on April 18, 2006) is famous for being the first child of actress Katie Holmes  and actor Tom Cruise . The protective mom was married to Tom for five and a half years, before she filed for divorce on June 29, 2012. During his deposition, Tom explained that Suri was no longer a practicing member of Scientology (via People ). While Tom Cruise's connection to daughter Suri Cruise was questioned following his split from Katie Holmes, the "Dawson's Creek" star publicly became a single mom, who seemingly adored raising her child. During an interview with People in November 2014, Holmes revealed that she had a very creative home life with Suri, and explained the ways in which she was a hands-on mom. No parents, no problem. Suri Cruise ‘s 15th birthday included two friends and neither of her parents. Suri, who is the daughter of Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes , turned 15 years old on Sunday, April 18, and from the looks of her bday, Suri had a grand old time exploring New York City without any parental supervision.

Suri was photographed Sunday with two friends as they bought flowers, ate ice cream and took selfies in downtown Manhattan, Suri’s mom, Katie Holmes , wasn’t far away however. Holmes was also photographed in the same neighborhood, shopping for Suri’s birthday present as her daughter enjoyed some alone time with her friends.

For her birthday outfit, Suri dressed in a leather jacket, a white T-shirt and dark-wash jeans. She completed the look with a white face mask and light sneakers. Suri, whose long brown hair came well below her shoulders, also looked noticeably taller from the last time fans saw her. (Her mom, FYI, is 5’9″.)

Suri is Holmes’ only child from her marriage to Cruis e, whom she was married to from 2006 to 2012. Cruise also has two children from his marriage to Nicole Kidman: son Connor, 26, and daughter Isabella, 28. Kidman and Cruise divorced in 2001 after 11 years of marriage.

In honor of Suri’s 15th birthday , Holmes took to her Instagram on Sunday with a post about how she couldn’t “believe” how fast her daughter had grown up. “Happy 15th Birthday Sweetheart! I love you!!!!!!!! ❤️💕😘 I can’t believe you are already 15!” she wrote.

Suri's name changed by katie holmes after tom cruise divorce.

Suri's name could be changed by Katie Holmes now that the divorce from Tom Cruise is settled and final, according to a new report. The now-single mother could be attempting to sever all ties with her ex-husband, although Cruise could still pay child support.

Though Suri's name will be changed, Katie Holmes could still leave her current last name, Cruise, on as a middle name, according to Now magazine, a U.K. publication.

"She's been telling friends she wants to make Suri's middle name Cruise and change her surname to Holmes," an unnamed source told Now.

Holmes may be less inclined to change Suri's first name, although it is certainly a possibility. In the meantime, she's given her a nickname from a popular book, "To Kill A Mockingbird"- Scout.

"She hates the name Suri, so she gave her a nickname from To Kill A Mockingbird," the insider alleged.

Although the newly-single 33-year-old mom is certainly within her rights to change Suri's name, it seemed to be endearing when she and Cruise first chose it. Then, the "Mission Impossible" star said in an interview that it had come from a name book.

"We just opened it and instantly came up with the name," reported The Los Angeles Times.

Suri is supposed to be a name with Hebrew and Persian origin, meaning "princess" and "red rose," respectively. It also means "pickpocket" in Japanese, although it was ignored by both parents at the time.

If Holmes is changing Suri's name, it could be another move to distance her 6-year-old daughter from Cruise and Scientology, which some reports stated were "controlling" the child's upbringing.

"She actually still loves Tom but would rather leave him than have Suri turned against her," a source told Us magazine, referring to Holmes' more traditional Catholic upbringing. "[Tom's] inner circle and the people handling [Suri] … They were so controlling it was terrifying."

Katie Holmes filed for divorce from Tom Cruise June 28, with both parties settling just days later. Cruise is expected to pay "more than $10 million" in child support, but is not liable for spousal support, according to TMZ.

Suri Cruise is counting down the days until adulthood, as the teenager turns 18 on April 18. Katie Holmes ' mini-me will no doubt have a day to remember with her mom and friends in New York City, where she has grown up since childhood. 

However, the 17-year-old's life has changed quite a lot over the years, as her early years were very different to the laidback lifestyle she is experiencing today. 

Born in Santa Monica, California, Suri grew up in Hollywood in an impressive $40M Beverly Hills mansion with her dad Tom Cruise and mom Katie, complete with a swimming pool, children's playground and guest houses. 

They lived there until Katie and Tom's separation in 2012. The then-couple also nested in a beautiful $59M house in Colorado, which had everything from a private trail system, ice hockey rink and a library.

What's more, Suri was also in the spotlight with her parents regularly, with her mom even coming to her defense back in 2009 when the then three-year-old was pictured on a number of occasions wearing heels. 

At the time, Katie told Access Hollywood: "Like every little girl, she loves my high heels. They are actually ballroom dancing shoes for kids. I found them for her and she loves them."

Since Katie and Tom's split, which has since resulted in the Mission Impossible actor becoming estranged from his daughter, Suri has grown up for the majority of her childhood in New York City. 

The cosmopolitan city has everything available to eat, buy and do, and Suri will have enjoyed having an exciting but down-to-earth lifestyle as a result. 

Celebrities love NYC because they can enjoy a sense of anonymity, and Katie has certainly ensured that's been the case for her daughter. The proud mom doesn't share pictures of Suri on social media anymore, but has occasionally opened up about how proud she is of her only child. It's clear that Suri has developed her parents' talents for performing, and showcased her incredible singing voice back in 2022. 

Suri was heard singing the opening credits of Katie's film, Alone Together, when she was just 15. She sang a pitch-perfect rendition of Blue Moon, and her mom was more than proud. 

Chatting to Yahoo! Entertainment about her daughter's role in the movie, she said: "She's very, very talented. She said she would do it and she recorded it and I let her do her thing. "That's the way I direct in general: It's like, 'This is what I think we all want - go do your thing'." 

The mom-of-one was asked why she chose Suri for the job and she said: "I always want the highest level of talent, so I asked her." Suri is incredibly creative and these skills have been encouraged by her mom. Katie previously revealed that the pair enjoyed many crafty hobbies during the height of the pandemic during lockdown. "I painted, we had a sewing machine, so we were making quilts, we were cooking; we were on a perpetual vacation," Katie told the sophomore issue of Amazing magazine. 

"We were also on a lake and there was a hammock, so I would wake up, sew, have coffee, take a nap on the hammock [laughs]… Oh and, by the way, I have to throw this in; we were staying by a lake, so we probably watched Dirty Dancing ten times. Let me tell you, I danced to it in the living room, and it still holds up. It was fun."

TOM Cruise's daughter Suri Cruise has been spotted on the streets of Manhattan looking like a full-blown adult.

The 17-year-old was seen in New York's Soho while walking with some friends.

Suri is the daughter of actors Tom Cruise , 60, and Katie Holmes , 44.

She was wearing a black tank top and a knee-length denim skirt which gave early 2000s vibes.

She paired it with several silver bracelets and a black string choker necklace that had a large silver flower on it.

On her feet were black sneakers and tall white socks that were scrunched down at her ankles.

Suri was also sporting a face full of makeup - lipstick and blush included.

TWO YEARS AGO

In August 2021, Katie and her lookalike daughter turned heads as they stepped out in New York City .

It was hard to miss that her daughter had a striking similarity to her actress mom in the early days of her career.

With her tall frame and long dark locks, the teen looked just like Katie when she starred in Dawson's Creek over 20 years ago.

Katie starred as Joey Potter in Dawson's Creek from 1998 to 2003, joining the show as a fresh-faced 18-year-old.

On their Friday outing, Katie kept it casual in a cream T-shirt tucked into white pants. Suri wore red shorts and cropped tank top.

Enjoying her evening stroll with her only child, Katie affectionately played with her daughter's brunette tresses while they waited for a crosswalk to turn green.

FATHER-DAUGHTER RELATIONSHIP

Suri has reportedly not seen  Top Gun  star Tom in more than a decade after her mom divorced him when she was five.

Katie gained sole custody of Suri in 2012, along with a generous settlement that has Tom paying a reported £325,000 a year for his daughter’s care.

After the split, Katie took Suri to New York which was 2,400 miles away from LA -based Tom.

The actor has been accused of putting his religion before his daughter, with ex-Scientologists claiming he has been ordered to shun Katie and Suri as non-believers.

High-profile former church member Samantha Domingo, daughter-in-law of opera singer Placido, spoke about the religion in 2019.

Suri Cruise looked so grown up on Wednesday when she she was captured heading on vacation with her mother, Katie Holmes  from New York. 

The mother-daughter duo were pictured getting into a car with their luggage as they headed off for the Easter weekend. Suri's beautiful long hair took centre stage of the pre-holiday snaps. The 17-year-old donned a pair of fabulously vibrant red trousers covered in white swirls, a corduroy navy blue jacket with a shearling collar and black trainers. 

Meanwhile, Mum Katie oozed glamour wearing an oversized army-green jacket and beige trousers. The actress slipped on a pair of dark sunglasses, and opted for a pair of chunky black sandals for footwear.

The mother-daughter trip came just weeks before Suri turns 18 on April 18. Katie is exceptionally private about her daughter, and whether or not she will go to college is yet to be revealed. 

However, Suri has been involved in two of her mother's movies, Alone Together and Rare Objects, where she can be heard showing off her impressive singing voice.

Therefore, it is likely that the youngster may want to follow in her movie star parent's footsteps for a career in Hollywood.  Listen to Suri's incredible vocals in the video below.

Prior to their latest appearance in New York, the duo were spotted back in December for  Katie's 45th birthday celebrations.  The pair couldn't have looked more similar in the photos.

Katie looked effortlessly glamorous,  sporting a grey and black leopard print maxi dress, which she paired with classic white boots. 

Meanwhile, Suri was wrapped in a cosy grey tweed coat, oversized maroon scarf and black pointed-toe heels.

Katie shares Suri with her ex-husband Tom Cruise,  who is reportedly estranged from his daughter. Tom and Suri haven't been pictured together in public for over ten years.

He does however pay £400,000 a year in child support which will come to an end when she turns 18 in April. 

The former couple had a whirlwind romance and were engaged in June 2005, two months after they started dating. They welcomed Suri one year later. The pair split in August 2012.

Suri as middle name - with a reason......

.....we're currently living in Syria - and baby was conceived here, so I quite like idea of having Suri as middle name if we have girl. Is it too awful? Plus, i know there's the whole Tom Cruise thing - but they buggered up meaning, whereas everyone now knows it means "from syria" What do you all think???? First name, looking at things like Jessica, Miranda. And our surname starts with R and is 3 syllables long.

I think it is very nice. I do not follow celebs at all so am totally unaware of the Tom Cruise connection.

I didn't actually know that it means from Syria! But I wouldn't not use it as a middle name, just because of the Cruises if you like it. And bearing in mind its meaning.

Yes - Tom Cruise thought it was "princess" but apparently that's Sari... So it's ok you think? Now need to get it past DH! :)

I thought it was a form of Sarah (which means princess) - I believe it's a Yiddish nickname for it? But of course that doesn't stop it having other origins and meanings. I don't see why you shouldn't use it. It's sweet.

Aaah - so loads of meanings - i'll pick and choose the ones i like. Plus there's a chance that the baby might have ginger hair, as I had ginger hair til I was 10 (and miss it!) - so Red Rose could be apt!

It's nice. I see the reason why you like it, and the reservation re celeb connection. Another similar name is Siri (perhaps not too helpful as it is not Syrian, without the meaning you like bu...also without the celeb link) It means Beautiful Victory, and is scandinavian I think.

but suri meaning from syria/syrian is the male one though, for a female should be suria otherwise in arabic/gramatically its technically 'wrong' although dont know if that bothers you or not?
