However, always remember that while one agency may be a perfect fit for one travel nurse, it may be a different story for someone else.

For example, while one travel nurse may value a close relationship with their recruiter, another might be more concerned with salary or benefits.

Host Healthcare is the best travel nursing agency for those looking for robust support from recruiters. As soon as you start working with this company, you’ll have access to 24/7 support.

So, anytime you have a question or concern, you can call, text, or DM to get a quick answer. This makes it a great option for those who are new to travel nursing and might need a little extra guidance.

Of course, whether you’re a new travel nurse or a seasoned pro, there will always be times when you need to get in touch with your agency quickly.

Additionally, Host gives you access to jobs in all 50 states. All you need to do is select your desired contract location, and the company will help you find placements.

If you’re looking for a travel nurse agency with great benefits, you should check out RNNetwork . The company offers Day One benefits, meaning you’ll have access to them on the first day of your contract.

They offer a host of benefits including:

  • Zero-Premium Health Insurance: Fully paid by RNnetwork, with dependant and life partner coverage.
  • Prescription Pay: No-deductible for medications.
  • Dental Plan: 100% coverage for preventive services and children’s orthodontic coverage.

  • Employee Assistance Program: Access to expert advice for financial, mental, behavioral, and legal issues.
  • Life and AD&D Insurance: $50,000 coverage without requiring enrollment in a medical plan.
  • Teladoc: 24/7 physician consultation services over the phone.
  • Sanvello: Free access to a mindfulness app for stress, anxiety, and depression relief.
  • Talkspace: 24/7 access to licensed therapists online.

We discuss some of the other reasons to choose RNNetwork later on in the complete rankings.

The largest travel nursing agency is AMN Healthcare . In fact, they owned nearly 20% of the entire market share of the industry according to a report from a few years ago.

Working with the largest agency comes with a number of advantages, like the number and diversity of available job opportunities. Additionally, you’ll receive robust support and comprehensive benefits, like free housing, 401(k), and life insurance.

Given that AMN is such a big company that’s been around since 1985, you also know they have an established reputation. The company even has exclusive deals with healthcare facilities, giving you access to even more jobs.

Overall, AMN healthcare is a option for those looking for a large travel nursing agency with access to lots of resources.

21 Best Travel Nursing Agencies Ranked

Below we ranked the best travel nursing agencies based on reviews left on Indeed and Glassdoor. In instances where there was insufficient data on these sites, we substituted Facebook reviews.

Axis Medical Staffing Travel Nursing Agency

Axis Medical Staffing earned the title of best travel nursing agency for 2023 based on our aggregated data from ratings by travel nurses.

This agency was founded in 2004 and boasts lots of benefits, including:

  • Assignment opportunities in every state
  • A “personal touch” unrivaled by other agencies
  • A nice payment structure

Though it’s a highly-rated company and travelers are eligible for healthcare benefits the first of the month following their date of hire but it is something to be aware of as there is a month wait. If this is key in your decision, there are other options that offer day-one benefits.

However, if you’re in it for the adventure, this is a great agency to work with.

2. Host Healthcare

Host Healthcare Travel Nursing Agency

We mentioned earlier that Host Healthcare is one of the best travel nursing agencies when it comes to support. You can contact them with questions 24/7, and their recruiters will try to find your ideal placement.

However, Host offers a number of other great benefits too. For example, the company provides access to thousands of exclusive contract positions all across the country. Some other amazing benefits they provide include:

  • Day one medical coverage that lasts up to 30 days between assignments
  • 401(k) matching
  • Travel reimbursements
  • A dedicated housing support team

Overall, because Host Healthcare offers such comprehensive support, it’s a great option for those who are new to travel nursing. However, experienced travel nurses can also benefit from working with them.

Triage Staffing Travel Nursing Agency

Triage Staffing operates by the motto of “real and ready.” There are tons of great reviews from their employees, and they emphasize clear and open communication.

If you’re looking to build long-term relationships and communicate with your recruiter regularly, this may be a perfect option.

Just keep in mind that they do promote a more fun and casual culture, which may not be suitable for everyone.

Also, you’ll need two years of experience if you want to work with them. However, if you don’t have the experience yet, they still encourage you to get in touch and build a relationship while you gain that experience.

Fusion Medical Staffing Travel Nursing Agency

Fusion Medical Staffing is the next company on our list of best travel nursing agencies.

It began as a small business in 2009, but since then has grown rapidly. They’ve even won awards for being one of the fastest-growing companies and having an excellent workplace culture.

Some of the reasons to choose Fusion include:

  • They accept new graduates and provide a mentorship program
  • An emphasis on social responsibility and volunteering
  • An inclusive culture; for example, participating in LGBTQ+ pride events, disability fundraisers, and more

While the company does hire new graduates, the information on their website isn’t all that thorough. This can be a little scary for new travel nurses, so make sure you ask the right questions so you can decide if Fusion meets all of your needs.

Travel Nurses Inc Agency Review

Travel Nurses Inc. has been in business for over 30 years and features 24/7 clinical support. They also won the ClearlyRated Best of Staffing in both 2021 and 2022.

The agency has a robust job board, and even features a “Furnished Finder” tool that allows you to book housing options right on their website.

They provide day-one healthcare coverage and make contract transparency a priority. Your recruiter will schedule a review of your contract before you begin an assignment, ensuring all your needs are met.

While the ratings for this company on Indeed and Glassdoor are a bit sparse, this agency has lots of glowing reviews on Facebook and Google that are worth checking out.

The only thing to keep in mind is that you will need one year of experience to work TNI.

6. Atlas MedStaff

Atlas MedStaff Travel Nursing Agency

Atlas MedStaff is next in our rankings of the best travel nursing agencies, and has been around for over three decades. They place a focus on working closely with travel nurses and tailoring their contracts to fit their needs.

For example, each contract includes an “ Atlas Adventure ,” which is a unique experience that could include anything from skiing to going to see your favorite professional sports team.

Other reasons to work with this agency include:

  • Great insurance and benefits options
  • Paid private housing options
  • Transparent and long-term relationships

Just make sure you get set up with and develop a good relationship with your recruiter. As with many other of the best travel nursing agencies, this could make or break your experience.

Prime Time Healthcare Travel Nursing Agency

Prime Time Healthcare has been recruiting healthcare professionals for over 15 years.

If salary is a top priority, this may be a good agency to work with. Their travel nurse salary tends to go above average and offer great secondary perks, like:

  • An excellent range of benefits
  • Referral bonuses
  • Paid travel

Keep in mind that Prime Time tends to work with elite-level healthcare professionals.

Also, this agency doesn’t only find placements for travel nurses. They also fill positions for per diem nursing and permanent positions.

If you want an agency solely focused on travel nursing, you may want to look somewhere else. However, if you want to build a long-term relationship with a company and eventually move out of travel nursing, this could be a perfect fit.

Medical Solutions Travel Nursing Agency

Medical Solutions is an agency that focuses on custom-tailored contracts for their travel nurses.

In fact, before a nurse agrees to a contract, a consultant from the agency will speak with them about what is most important to them.

While each contract will be different depending on the needs of each nurse, you can expect:

  • An excellent 401(k) plan
  • Loyalty bonuses
  • Health benefits
  • Employee assistance program

While the contract flexibility and customization can be great for travel nurses who know exactly what they want, all the options could be overwhelming if you’re not sure.

If you’re new to travel nursing, it may be better idea to go with an agency offering standard contracts that have been tried and tested by lots of nurses before you.

9. RNnetwork

RNnetwork Travel Nursing Agency

RNnetwork ranks number four on our list of best travel nursing agencies.

This agency gives you the best of both worlds. While they have a personal and friendly approach to working with travel nurses, they also have the resources of a huge staffing company. This is because they are owned by a parent company called CHG Healthcare Services.

Other benefits of working with RNnetwork are that they:

  • Only focus on travel nursing
  • Provide great compensation and benefits
  • Have an easy-to-use job search platform

Just be wary of the fact that your experience may vary depending on the recruiter you are matched with. The wrong recruiter could leave you with a subpar experience.

OneStaff Medical Travel Nursing Agency

OneStaff Medical boasts experienced recruiters and dedication to the nurses they work with.

If you choose this agency, you’ll be able to contact a representative 24/7, 365 days a year. This way, if any problems come up, you can start finding solutions immediately.

They also provide communication on assistance with career goals and help in meeting your travel expectations.

Like most of the agencies on this list, you’ll have access to standard benefits and plenty of housing options.

However, OneStaff tends to work with travel nurses with at least two years of experience.

There have also been complaints of lack of cooperation between the agencies’ departments. Though they may be isolated instances, it’s a good idea to be wary.

Aya Healthcare Travel Nursing Agency

Aya Healthcare is one of the biggest and best-known travel nursing agencies in the United States.

Due to their size and reputation, they feature a huge selection of assignments to choose from.

Other advantages of working with this agency include:

  • Day-one benefits
  • Credentialing and paperwork support
  • Scholarships and education assistance

If you want to work with an agency with lots of resources, you should definitely consider Aya.

However, just remember that their size may mean you can’t build the same type of relationship you could with a smaller agency.

If having a “personal touch” is important to you, this may not be the best option.

Fastaff Travel Nursing Agency

Fastaff Travel Nursing specializes in “Rapid Response” healthcare staffing. This means they staff facilities in desperate need of nurses during times of crisis, like environmental disasters or extreme staffing shortages.

This agency offers some of the highest pay rates to travel nurses. However, this is largely because the assignments tend to be more difficult given their “Rapid Response” specialization.

If salary is top priority, this may be just the agency for you.

However, keep in mind that you’ll likely need to be ready to start working within 48 hours of accepting a position.

These more difficult assignments also tend be a better fit for more experienced nurses. Their culture is more professional and less friendly because of the urgent nature of most of their placements.

AMN Travel Nursing Agency

We mentioned earlier in this article that AMN is the largest travel nursing agency, giving you access to a bigger pool of exclusive jobs and resources.

However, there are lots of other great things about this travel nursing agency too. For example, they offer a host of benefits, like:

  • Free and high-quality private housing
  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance
  • 401(k) and flex spending accounts
  • Life insurance
  • Free continuing education courses
  • Discounts on things like computers, cell phones, hotels, car rentals, gym memberships, and more

Perhaps most noteworthy is their mobile app. With the AMN Passport app, you can receive personalized job alerts, view time and pay details, and organize your credentials.

Overall, AMN is likely best for travel nurses with a bit of experience under their belt. However, if you’re looking for an agency with robust resources and great benefits, this could be the right fit.

14. Aureus Medical

Aureus Medical Travel Nursing Agency

Aureus Medical has been around for over 35 years, and they promote a highly-personalized approach to travel nursing.

Every nurse has a dedicated recruiter. However, if the recruiter is unavailable, there is always someone to offer support 24/7.

The agency also boasts:

  • Long-standing relationships with healthcare facilities
  • A dedicated housing and travel department
  • Robust benefits

One thing to keep in mind, however, is that the agency is rather large. So, despite having a dedicated recruiter, you may have to deal with a number of different staff members.

Unfortunately, this means information can sometimes slip through the cracks, meaning you may have to repeat yourself if your information isn’t passed along by their staff members.

Travel Nurse Across America Agency

Travel Nurse Across America has been around since 1999. They’ve often been featured in top ten lists for travel nursing agencies, and they’re considered one of the most reputable in the nation.

The agency boasts great relationships with its client facilities and a clear and transparent company culture.

One of the best things about TNAA is their benefits. They send an Assignment Benefit Summary before each assignment begins.

If you’re looking to put in some extra hours, you may also be able to take advantage of “TNAA Boost Pay.” This is a special rate you receive if you work an extra shift.

The agency also features other typical benefits, and even pay protection if one of your shifts gets cancelled.

While the company does boast a robust job board, it doesn’t publish pay rates on third-party sites when promoting job opportunities. This could be frustrating when looking for a position that fits your compensation needs.

16. Krucial Staffing

Crucial Staffing Travel Nursing Agency

Krucial Staffing specializes in staffing healthcare facilities in urgent need of nurses.

This means the assignments tend to be in more high-risk, emergency areas. It also means you’ll typically need to be ready to start working within 48 hours.

While these assignments are certainly more challenging, you’ll also be compensated for that extra difficulty.

Additionally, you’ll receive:

  • Extra benefits through Krucial’s partnerships
  • Excellent housing options

If you’re up for a challenge and want access to a wide variety of assignments that tend to be shorter in length, this may be the right option for you.

NuWest Travel Nursing Agency

NuWest has been around for about 25 years and prides itself on the quick deployment of travel nurses. In fact, they typically send nurses to an assignment within 72 hours.

This agency has a smaller feel and a more personal touch. It also offers competitive pay rates and all the benefits you’d expect from a travel nursing company.

The downside is that they have a smaller number of available assignments compared to some other agencies. They mainly staff facilities in:

However, if you’re a travel nurse looking to work in one of these states and you’re prepared for quick deployment, NuWest may be a good fit.

18. TotalMed

TotalMed Staffing Travel Nursing Agency

TotalMed Staffing provides healthcare facilities travel nurses and helps nurses find local jobs.

If you’re a travel nurse looking to cover all your basics, this agency may be a good option. They have a large network and robust online job board, meaning you’ll have lots of assignments to choose from.

The company also provides:

  • Day one benefits
  • Credentialing and paperwork assistance
  • Educational and professional support

One thing to be wary of is that some nurses have complained about a long onboarding process. However, for most nurses, the process has not been a problem.

Maxim Travel Nursing

Maxim Healthcare Staffing has been around for over three decades. In addition to travel nurses, they also staff for home healthcare and wellness services. The company employs more than 65,000 healthcare professionals in the United States.

The agency offers competitive pay rates and placements at some of the best facilities in the country.

Like some of the other travel nursing agencies on this list, a lot of the travel nursing assignments tend to be in high-stress, high-volume areas.

While this will earn you a higher paycheck, it may not be the best fit for newer nurses.

Another thing to keep in mind is that the agency has been a bit slow to resolve paycheck issues in the past. While the problems were always resolved, it could add more stress to an already stressful placement.

Trustaff Travel Nursing

Trustaff has been matching travel nurses with hospitals for over two decades.

One thing that makes this agency stand out is their superb communication and helpful staff. They have an active support line with people ready to help you out.

They offer everything you’d expect from a travel nursing company, including:

  • Health insurance
  • Start and completion bonuses

However, assignment length can be inconsistent when working with Trustaff. Most assignments last 13 weeks, but they could end up being shorter or longer.

If you need a more consistent schedule, this may not be the best fit.

Nomad Travel Nursing

Nomad boasts one of the best and most streamlined digital marketplaces for finding travel nursing assignments. Also, their pay packages tend to be on the higher end of the spectrum.

A few other upsides to working with this agency include:

  • Licensure reimbursement
  • Medical, dental, and vision benefits

However, some travel nurses that worked with the company reported that there was poor communication. This could be a huge problem, especially if you’re new to travel nursing.

Nomad Travel Nursing is part of the broader Nomad Health platform, so it may be easy to get lost in the shuffle of such a big company.

It’s worth noting that there are plenty of both 5 and 1 star ratings, so it may just depend on the recruiter you end up working with.

There is no single travel nursing agency that pays the most. In fact, all the agencies on this list provide competitive rates.

If you’re looking to make as much money as possible from your contract, you should focus on factors like location and the type of contract.

For example, travel nurses have a much higher earning potential in states like California or New York compared to states like Arkansas or Kentucky. Just keep in mind that the cost of living is also greater in the former states than the latter.

Additionally, a more specialized nursing role will typically pay more than a general RN role. So, if you want to make more money, consider earning certifications or getting an advanced degree.

Whichever agency you choose, travel nursing salaries are much higher than resident registered nursing salaries. The average annual salary for a travel nurse is $106,030 per year, compared to resident RN salaries at $82,750 per year.

While Axis Medical Staffing is the top-rated travel nursing agency in 2023, the company that’s right for you will depend on your priorities.

Don’t be afraid to explore multiple options before making your final decision. This will ensure you secure the best contract possible.

How To Choose a Travel Nursing Company

When looking for the best travel nursing company to suit your needs, you first have to know what your needs are.

Here are a few questions to ask yourself when considering travel nursing companies:

  • Are you going to need health insurance?
  • How important is it that you contribute to your retirement?
  • Do you prefer to find your own housing, or do you want your company to find it for you?
  • Where do you want to travel?
  • How do you plan on getting there?
  • Do you plan on working per diem as well?
  • What kind of healthcare facilities are you hoping to work in?

What to Look for in a Travel Nursing Agency

When looking into travel nurse agencies, you should first make sure that they provide the basics: free housing or a housing stipend, health and dental insurance, a retirement plan, travel reimbursement, 24-hour customer support, and a variety and abundance of travel nursing jobs all over the country.

1. The Travel Nurse Housing Options

Do you want your agency to find housing for you, or do you want to take the housing stipend and search for housing yourself?

I personally found it much easier to have my agency set up my housing for me. This way, I knew it was safe, furnished, close to where I was working, and paid for. If there were any problems, all I had to do was call my company, and it would be handled.

Many people choose to find their own housing and take the housing stipend instead. There are pros and cons to this choice:

Pros To Choosing Housing Stipends

  • Your housing stipend depends on the city you live in, but oftentimes, it is more than the rent you end up paying. This is a good way to make some extra tax-free cash.
  • You can find exactly the type of housing you’re looking for at the price you’re willing to pay. You can rent just a room for yourself and pocket a lot of cash. Or rent an entire house if you’re bringing your family or pets along. If you’re traveling with fellow coworkers, you can find a bigger house to share that fits everyone.
  • You can choose where you live. Maybe you’re going to Seattle and you’d rather live downtown and commute to work than vs. living next to the hospital in the suburbs.
  • There are several websites and groups now to help you find housing
  • Once you’ve done it once, you understand how to find housing and can repeat the process in the next location.

Cons To Choosing Housing Stipends

  • It can be difficult to find short-term furnished housing.
  • Many landlords require a deposit, so you have to front that money before you get your first paycheck.
  • If you end up extending your contract, it’s not guaranteed that your landlord hasn’t rented out the place to someone else.
  • If you have never been to that city before, it can also be tough to determine whether a neighborhood is safe or not.

Another thing to keep in mind, if you are traveling with a pet, it may make it difficult to find your own housing. Oftentimes, travel nurse agencies have housing already contracted that accepts pets.

There are pros and cons to using your a travel nurse agency’s contracted housing vs. finding your own housing. It just depends on how much time and effort you can put into the search and if you’re hoping to pocket any extra housing stipend cash.

2. The Benefits Offered

The majority of travel nurse companies offer health and dental insurance.

Now that the Affordable Care Act is in place, it might be wise to research whether or not it would be more cost-effective for you to go with your agency’s healthcare plan or purchase one of your own through healthcare.org. The benefit of going through healthcare.org is that if you do plan on switching travel nurse agencies, you won’t have to change your insurance.

Some smaller travel nurse companies will give you a healthcare stipend if you don’t take their health insurance so you can purchase your own.

As far as retirement plans go, I decided to open up my own Roth IRA and not contribute to the 401K because I didn’t know how long I was going to be traveling.  With some companies you can contribute to your 401K from day 1 and with others you have to wait as long as 1 year.

3. The Travel Nurse Reimbursements

When talking with your potential travel nurse agency, make sure you ask them what the reimbursement is for travel.

“Travel” cost is considered the amount of money it takes you to get from your “tax home” to your travel assignment or from one assignment to the next. Often times this can be negotiated if there is a high need in one state that happens to be across the country.

I have found that the average reimbursement is $500.

They will pay you half on your first paycheck and the other half when you complete your assignment. You have the option of either driving or flying to your next destination. I personally drove to each of my assignments; I couldn’t imagine trying to fit all my belongings into suitcases, and I love road trips.

Important Pay and Benefits Questions to Ask

Not all benefits or pay packages are created equal. It is important to find an agency that offers benefits, housing, and pay packages that are specific to your needs.

1. What destinations does your agency serve?

The whole point of travel nursing is to travel…right? So it is important to find a company that serves the city or cities you want to travel to. Some agencies claim they have contracts nationwide, however, that may not be the case.

If you know of a specific hospital that you would like to travel to because it looks good on your resume or a specific city you want to explore, then make sure your potential agency has a contract at that location. This is especially important if you want to travel to places such as Hawaii and Alaska.

Match with a travel company here.

2. How are your pay packages broken down?

Does the company tend to pay a higher base rate with lower non-taxable reimbursements or a lower base rate with higher non-taxable reimbursements?

Having a higher base rate may serve you better if you plan on taking company housing, plan on buying a house, or getting a loan in the near future. If you are someone who likes to find their own housing, then a higher housing stipend may be the way to go with a lower base rate.

3. What types of housing do you provide?

Most agencies offer a one-bedroom furnished apartment for your typical 13-week contract. This typically does not include dishes, linen, a washer and dryer, a T.V., or even a vacuum. If you don’t like lugging your belongings around with you all over the country or paying out of pocket to rent this stuff, then it may be wise to either ask if the agency provides any of these necessities at no cost or find your own housing.

If your contract is only eight weeks, then you could get stuck in an extended-stay hotel. I personally like to have nice housing, so I wanted a company that focused on providing comfortable and safe housing options. If you like to find your own housing then this may not apply to you.

4. What type of benefits do you offer?

Most agencies offer medical/dental benefits and a retirement package. If these benefits are important to you, then finding a company with good benefits is essential.

If you like to live on the edge with no health benefits and you brush and floss your teeth like a champ, then maybe you don’t care about benefits. If this is the case then you can ask the company if they are willing to pay you a higher base rate for not taking their benefits.

As far as retirement packages go, I found it easier to do my own Roth IRA on the side. This way, if I switched companies I didn’t have to worry about moving my money all over the place.

Click here to discover new high paying opportunities.

5. What types of extra work-related costs do you reimburse for?

Travel nurse companies can reimburse you for the following:

  • Licensing fees
  • CEU (Continuing Education) requirements
  • Certifications
  • Required immunizations

Some travel nurse agencies have a CEU database that is free for their employees. This helps cut costs in those states that require a certain number to maintain or acquire a new license.

These extra costs add up over time so it’s nice to know your agency is looking out for your pocketbook.

6. What are your missed and canceled shift policies?

A missed shift means you called in sick, and a canceled shift means they canceled you for low census. For the most part, the hospital determines how the travel nurse agency handles this, and it will be written in your contract.

This is important because in the travel nurse world if you don’t work, you don’t get paid. And in some cases, you may have to reimburse your agency for housing costs.

There may be a clause written in your contract that allows you to “miss” a certain amount of shifts without being penalized. There will also be a clause that states how many shifts the hospital can cancel you. Usually, it’s once a pay period, and your agency shouldn’t require you to reimburse them for housing costs.

There are even some agencies that offer 100% guaranteed shifts meaning no matter what you will not get canceled.

Find travel assignments in your specialty here.

Other Questions To Ask a Travel Nurse Agency:

  • What is the travel reimbursement?
  • How much will health insurance cost me?
  • If I don’t take health insurance, do I get a healthcare stipend?
  • When can I start contributing to my 401K?
  • Are there bonuses for extending assignments?
  • How often do I get paid?
  • Does the company also contract per diem work?
  • Do they offer paid time off?
  • Are there any referral bonuses available?

The Best Traveling Nurse Services to Work for in 2024

The travel nursing agencies we recommend for your next short-term post

Traveling nurses often find working in different parts of the country or even the world exhilarating and fulfilling. Many agencies focus on matching registered nurses (RNs) with short-term working opportunities in various healthcare specialties and settings across the United States and internationally. Healthcare facilities in the U.S. rely on travel nurses to meet the demand for nurses, which is expected to soar by 275,000 between 2020 and 2030.

Travel nurses can gain new experiences and perspectives by exploring other healthcare systems and connecting with other providers, says Rachel Norton , BSN, RN, a clinician support manager at Vivian Health , a national travel nurse hiring marketplace.  We reviewed more than 20 agencies and studied hundreds of reviews to create this list of the best travel nursing agencies. We considered factors such as company quality, customer service scores, company reputation, wage ranges, housing options, and benefits.

  • What to Know Before Speaking With a Travel Nursing Agency
  • Average pay rates: Pay rates vary by agency, location, and assignment. Travel nurses often work with multiple agencies simultaneously to find the best assignments and pay rates.
  • Benefits package: Ensure the agency's comprehensive benefits meet your needs. Benefits may include health coverage , dental, vision, life insurance, short-term disability, 401 (K), vacation time, and education reimbursement.
  • Housing options: Determine if the agency provides housing or assists with finding housing.
  • Reputation: Check out online reviews and ratings to understand the agency's reputation. Talking to other travel nurses who have worked with the agency is also a good way to get first-hand information.
  • Specialty assignments: Agencies can help place you in an assignment that matches your specialty, interests, and skills . Some facilities accept travelers into new specialties or a float pool that covers multiple units as long as they have prior travel nursing experience. This is a bonus for those who wish to explore new areas of nursing.
  • Flexibility: Agencies offer a variety of assignment lengths and locations, so you can choose an assignment that fits your lifestyle.
  • Perks and discounts : Travel nursing agencies often offer free or reduced-cost continuing education courses, travel expenses, gym memberships, completion bonuses, and other perks.
  • What Healthcare Providers Want You to Know
  • In-demand fields: Staffing agencies report high demand for critical care, medical-surgical nurses, emergency room staff, and labor and delivery staff.
  • Finding housing: Your agency will either have housing available for you or will reimburse you for your housing expenses. If you choose to secure your housing, most agencies will give you a stipend to help offset the cost of rent and utilities. Talk with your agency recruiter about your housing options and what will work best for you.
  • Contract length: Some travel nursing opportunities can be as short as eight weeks, while others can last up to six months. There are often options and offers to extend assignments, too.
  • Preferred experience: Most agencies require new travelers to have recent experience as a nurse—meaning you can't become a travel nurse right out of nursing school. A year or two of experience is commonly required. A qualified nurse may also need more experience to work in the intensive care unit (ICU) or another specialty area.
  • You pick your location: Yes, and that's generally a benefit of the job. Some agencies work to assign candidates throughout the United States, while others place travel nurses internationally. Before deciding to work with an agency, it makes sense to find out where they place travel nurses if you have a specific placement location.

In reviews, nurses rave about their recruiters being responsive, receptive, and thorough in their onboarding and placement processes. The company also offers a variety of housing options, including pet-friendly ones, to ensure you have a comfortable place to call home while on assignment.

Founded in 2009 in Omaha, Nebraska, Fusion doubled its size by 2016. The company racked up awards from Inc., People, and Staffing Industry Analysts for being among the best places to work and is rated 4.7 out of 5 on Indeed.com .

Assignments through Fusion Medical typically run 13 to 26 weeks and are available across a broad spectrum of nursing specialties. We particularly like how transparent the pay, terms, and benefits for each opportunity are on Fusion's website.

But what really makes the company stand out is its recruitment. Fusion offers 24/7 support and many of its travel nurses rave about their attentive recruiters. Fusion has a new graduate traveling medical job program recruiting nurses who have just finished training. Most travel nursing agencies require at least two years of experience, so Fusion may be a great choice if you're about to finish school and eager to see the country or aren't sure of where you want to call home yet.

Of note: Some LGBTQIA+ travelers and employees have complained of inclusivity issues and unsupportive leadership. In 2021, the company published a blog post about forming an oversight group dedicated to LGBTQIA+ inclusivity and support and alluded to its efforts to "grow" and "learn."

Understanding the Role of Travel Nursing Agencies

When it comes to travel nursing, agencies play a crucial role in connecting healthcare professionals with job opportunities across the country. These agencies serve as a bridge between nurses and healthcare facilities, streamlining the job hunt process and saving nurses time and effort.

The Functionality of Travel Nursing Agencies

Travel nursing agencies take care of various tasks that nurses would typically have to handle themselves, such as job placement, contract negotiation, and housing arrangements. Here are some of the key functionalities of travel nursing agencies:

Streamline the job hunt process: Travel nursing agencies have a network of healthcare facilities across the country, making it easier for nurses to find job opportunities in different locations. Instead of submitting multiple applications and going through numerous interviews, nurses can work with a travel nursing agency to find assignments that match their experience and preferences.

Negotiate competitive pay rates and compensation packages: Travel nursing agencies have experience in negotiating pay rates and compensation packages on behalf of nurses.

They strive to ensure that nurses receive competitive hourly wages, housing stipends, travel reimbursement, and benefits packages, maximizing their compensation.

Handle administrative tasks: Travel nursing agencies handle administrative tasks, such as direct deposit, sick pay, and vacation time, ensuring nurses receive their pay and benefits seamlessly.

This allows nurses to focus on their assignments and patient care, rather than dealing with paperwork and administrative responsibilities.

Provide comprehensive benefits packages: Travel nursing agencies offer comprehensive benefits packages, including health coverage, dental insurance, vision coverage, and life insurance options, for nurses who work with them. These benefits packages provide peace of mind and security, ensuring nurses have access to healthcare coverage and financial protection.

To minimize nurses’ out-of-pocket expenses, travel nursing agencies often provide travel reimbursement options, covering a portion of travel costs, such as airfare, mileage, or housing stipend.

The Impact of Travel Nursing Agencies on Healthcare Services

Travel nursing agencies play a significant role in addressing staffing shortages in healthcare facilities across the country, particularly in high-demand areas. Here are a few ways travel nursing agencies impact healthcare services:

Ensuring a steady supply of qualified nurses: Healthcare facilities rely on travel nursing agencies to provide a steady supply of qualified nurses to meet their staffing needs.

By partnering with travel nursing agencies, healthcare facilities can access a pool of nurses who are willing to travel and work on a temporary basis, ensuring a continuous delivery of healthcare services.

This benefits healthcare facilities by ensuring they have access to healthcare professionals with specialized skills, resulting in improved patient care and outcomes.

Maintaining service levels during high demand: During times of increased patient volume, healthcare facilities may experience staffing shortages.

Travel nursing agencies provide a solution by supplying healthcare professionals who can step in and maintain service levels, ensuring patients receive the care they need, even during periods of high demand.

Supporting exceptional customer service: Travel nursing agencies understand the importance of exceptional customer service in healthcare. They strive to match nurses with assignments that align with their skills, experience, and preferences, ensuring a positive experience for both nurses and healthcare facilities.

How Much Does a Travel Nurse Make? Average Salaries and Top Paying States Guide

Travel nurses typically earn between $3,000 and $7,000 per week. Their earnings depend on the work assignment and travel location. Most travel nurses complete a 36-hour work week. This pay range reflects the high demand for their services and the unique aspects of travel nursing.

Certain states pay travel nurses significantly more than others. For instance, California, New York, and Texas typically rank as some of the highest-paying states for travel nursing. In California, the average salary can exceed $120,000 due to high demand and the cost of living. In contrast, states like Florida and North Carolina offer lower average salaries, ranging from $60,000 to $80,000.

Understanding these salary variations is crucial for travel nurses seeking the best opportunities. Compensation packages often include more than just base wages. Factors such as shift differentials, overtime pay, and the availability of high-demand specialties further impact overall earnings.

As you consider becoming a travel nurse, knowing the average salaries and top-paying locations will guide your decisions. Next, we will explore the benefits and challenges of the travel nursing lifestyle, helping you make an informed choice about this career path.

Table of Contents

What Is the Average Salary of a Travel Nurse?

The average salary of a travel nurse is typically higher than that of a traditional staff nurse. According to the American Nurses Association, travel nurses are registered nurses who work temporary assignments at various healthcare facilities. They receive competitive pay, often including benefits such as housing stipends and travel reimbursements.

The American Nurses Association offers a comprehensive definition, emphasizing that travel nurses fill short-term staffing gaps in hospitals and other healthcare settings due to increased demand or staff shortages. Their flexible work arrangements allow them to explore new locations while providing essential medical care.

Travel nurse salaries vary based on several factors, including location, level of experience, and specialty area. States with high demand for nurses, such as California and New York, often offer higher salaries. Additionally, specialized fields like intensive care or emergency room nursing may attract premium pay rates.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that registered nurses, in general, earned a median annual salary of $77,600 in 2021. However, travel nurses can earn between $1,500 and $3,500 per week, depending on the location and assignment length.

The growing need for travel nurses impacts healthcare systems, as hospitals may rely on them to maintain care quality during labor shortages. This reliance can lead to staff burnout among permanent employees.

Economically, the demand for travel nurses supports local economies as they spend on housing, food, and transportation. For example, travel nurses can stimulate local businesses in regions with staff shortages.

To address the challenges of staffing shortages, healthcare organizations should consider competitive pay, flexible schedules, and enhanced support for both travel and permanent nurses. Recommendations include improving working conditions and investing in nurse training programs.

Technological solutions, like advanced scheduling software and telehealth platforms, can help optimize nurse staffing. These measures can increase efficiency and ensure adequate staffing levels across healthcare facilities.

How Do Experience Levels Affect Average Travel Nurse Salaries?

Experience levels significantly affect average travel nurse salaries, with more seasoned professionals typically earning higher wages due to their expertise and skill set.

Key points explaining how experience influences these salaries include:

Experience and Salary Correlation : Travel nurses with more years of experience generally command higher salaries. According to the American Nurses Association (2021), nurses with over five years of experience can earn over 20% more than those with less than two years.

Specialization Impact : Experienced travel nurses often have specialized skills, which are in high demand. Specialties such as critical care or emergency room nursing can lead to premium pay rates. A report from RN Network (2022) noted that specialized travel nurses can earn up to 30% more compared to generalist nurses.

Contract Negotiation Skills : With experience, nurses develop better negotiation skills. Experienced travel nurses are often more assertive in negotiating contracts and salaries, leading to higher income. A survey by Travel Nurses Across America (2022) found that experienced nurses reported negotiating an average of $10 more per hour than less experienced counterparts.

Market Demand : Travel nurses with significant experience may have more opportunities in high-demand areas, leading to better job offers and pay. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (2023), areas experiencing nursing shortages often attract higher pay for qualified, experienced nurses.

Length of Assignments : More experienced travel nurses may also secure longer assignments, which can accumulate higher pay over time. A study by NurseFly (2022) indicated that experienced nurses average 12-week contracts, while less experienced nurses typically receive shorter assignments.

Overall, experience levels play a crucial role in determining average salaries for travel nurses, influencing pay rates, negotiation leverage, and job opportunities available to them.

What Additional Benefits Are Included in a Travel Nurse Salary Package?

Travel nurse salary packages include various additional benefits that enhance overall compensation and job satisfaction.

  • Health Insurance
  • Retirement Plans
  • Housing Stipends
  • Travel Reimbursements
  • Continuing Education Compensation
  • Licensing and Certification Reimbursement
  • Flexible Schedules

The perspective on these benefits can vary among travel nurses. Some may prioritize health insurance, while others may find the housing stipends more valuable.

Health Insurance : Health insurance is a common benefit in travel nurse salary packages. It typically covers medical, dental, and vision care. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, having health insurance is a crucial factor for job satisfaction. Travel nurses often have the choice between different plans, which allows them to select coverage that suits their individual needs.

Retirement Plans : Retirement plans provide travel nurses with options for long-term savings. Many companies offer 401(k) plans, sometimes with employer matching contributions. This benefit encourages travel nurses to save for their future. Research from Fidelity Investments in 2021 indicated that many workers feel more secure with employer-sponsored retirement plans.

Housing Stipends : Housing stipends help cover living expenses while on assignment. Travel nurses often receive a set amount of money to pay for housing or can choose to live in company-provided accommodations. According to a study by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN), housing stipends can significantly affect a nurse’s ability to find comfortable living conditions while working far from home.

Travel Reimbursements : Travel reimbursements include compensation for commuting costs to and from assignments. This benefit can cover airfare, gas, and other travel-related expenses. According to a report by Travel Nursing Central, these reimbursements can amount to hundreds or even thousands of dollars, making assignments more financially feasible.

Bonuses : Bonuses are additional financial incentives for travel nurses. Common types of bonuses include completion bonuses and referral bonuses. The American Nurse Association reported in 2020 that bonuses can significantly influence a nurse’s choice of assignments and overall earnings.

Continuing Education Compensation : Continuing education compensation assists travel nurses in their professional development. Many companies reimburse tuition fees or provide funds for certification courses. According to the Journal of Nursing Scholarship, ongoing education is essential for nurses to keep their skills up-to-date, and financial support through company compensation is greatly appreciated.

Licensing and Certification Reimbursement : Licensing and certification reimbursement supports travel nurses in maintaining necessary credentials. Companies often cover costs associated with obtaining or renewing licenses and certifications. The Nursing Licensure Compact allows nurses to work in multiple states without constantly needing new licenses, enhancing the value of this reimbursement.

Flexible Schedules : Flexible schedules provide travel nurses with the ability to choose work hours that fit their lifestyles. This benefit can lead to improved work-life balance. According to the American Nurses Association, flexibility in scheduling is increasingly sought after by nurses to manage personal and professional responsibilities.

Collectively, these benefits significantly contribute to the overall compensation package for travel nurses, making the profession attractive to many.

What Are the Highest Paying States for Travel Nurses?

The highest paying states for travel nurses often include California, New York, Texas, Massachusetts, and Washington.

  • Massachusetts

These states offer competitive salary rates driven by high demand, cost of living, and specific healthcare needs.

Travel nurses in California typically earn the highest salaries due to the state’s high cost of living and demand for nursing staff. According to a 2023 study by the American Association of Colleges of Nursing, average pay can surpass $3,500 per week in metropolitan areas like Los Angeles and San Francisco.

Travel nurses in New York also receive substantial compensation. The average salary ranges from $2,500 to $3,500 per week, particularly in New York City. The high demand for qualified nurses drives wages up, as reported by the Bureau of Labor Statistics in 2022.

In Texas, travel nurses benefit from a lower cost of living compared to states like California and New York. Average earnings range around $2,000 to $3,200 per week, depending on the location and specialty area. A 2023 report from NursingWorld.com indicated that Texas is experiencing a rapid growth in healthcare facilities, contributing to increased opportunities.

In Massachusetts, travel nurses earn competitive wages, averaging between $2,700 to $3,400 weekly. The state is known for its expansive healthcare facilities, especially in cities like Boston. The Massachusetts Nurses Association has reported growth in nursing positions over the past few years.

In Washington, the average pay for travel nurses ranges from $2,500 to $3,500 weekly. The demand for healthcare professionals in urban centers pushes salaries higher. According to the Washington State Department of Health, there has been a consistent need for traveling nurses due to regional shortages in specialized areas like critical care.

Overall, these states present lucrative opportunities for travel nurses, depending on factors such as location, specialty, and market demand. Each state has unique attributes that contribute to these high salary levels, making them highly sought-after locations for travel nursing careers.

How Do Travel Nurse Salaries Compare Across Different States?

Travel nurse salaries vary significantly across different states due to factors like cost of living, demand for nurses, and state-specific policies.

Cost of living impacts salary levels. For example, states like California and New York offer higher salaries to compensate for higher living expenses. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, as of May 2022, the average salary for travel nurses in California was approximately $129,000 annually, while New York nurses earned around $119,000 annually. In contrast, states with lower living costs, such as Arkansas or Mississippi, offer salaries around $70,000 to $80,000 annually, which reflects the reduced demand for higher wages due to cheaper living expenses.

Demand for nurses also influences salary differences. States experiencing nursing shortages often provide higher pay to attract qualified travel nurses. For instance, Texas has reported a significant shortage, leading to average salaries for travel nurses at about $100,000 to $110,000 annually. This can be contrasted with states with lower demand, where salaries might remain stagnant.

State-specific policies such as tax regulations and housing assistance programs can affect take-home pay. For example, states like Florida have no state income tax, allowing travel nurses to keep more of their earnings compared to states like New York, which has a high state income tax rate. This difference means that even if New York offers higher gross pay, the net income may be comparable when adjusted for taxes.

In conclusion, travel nurse salaries vary widely due to the interplay of cost of living, demand for nursing services, and state policies, leading to significant differences in compensation across the country.

Which States Offer the Most Attractive Compensation Packages for Travel Nurses?

Several states offer attractive compensation packages for travel nurses, with California, New York, Texas, and Florida frequently leading the list.

  • North Carolina

The attractive compensation packages for travel nurses mainly focus on salaries that reflect the cost of living, demand for nursing professionals, and incentives like bonuses, housing stipends, and travel reimbursements.

California : California ranks high due to its generous salaries and high demand for nurses. The average pay for travel nurses in California can exceed $3,000 weekly. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the cost of living is also among the highest, which justifies these competitive rates. For instance, a case study by NurseFly in 2021 showed that California travel nurses consistently earned more than their peers in other states due to the state’s nursing shortages.

New York : New York is another state known for its lucrative compensation packages. Travel nurses can earn up to $3,200 per week depending on specialty and location. The urban centers, such as New York City, offer higher salaries. However, the high cost of living often offsets these earnings, making it a mixed bag for nurses considering placement in metropolitan areas.

Texas : Texas offers a combination of competitive pay and a lower cost of living compared to other states. Travel nurses in Texas can earn around $2,500 to $3,000 per week. The state has a growing healthcare industry, leading to a higher demand for travel nurses. Additionally, Texas lacks a state income tax, which can enhance take-home pay.

Florida : Florida’s warm climate attracts many travel nurses. Compensation ranges from $2,200 to $3,000 weekly. While the salaries are attractive, the competition among travel nurses can be fierce in popular destinations. According to a report by Travel Nurse Across America, demand in Florida surged during the pandemic, greatly impacting salary rates.

Washington : Washington state offers attractive pay rates that hover around $2,800 weekly. Travel nurses are drawn due to the state’s strong healthcare system and beautiful landscapes. The demand for nurses in urban areas like Seattle contributes to this.

Oregon : Oregon provides similar compensation levels as Washington, with pay averaging $2,700 per week. The state also has a high demand for nurses in many of its urban and rural health facilities.

Massachusetts : Nurses can earn approximately $3,000 per week in Massachusetts, particularly in Boston. The state’s healthcare system is renowned, contributing to demand. However, Boston’s high living costs could reduce overall earnings.

North Carolina : North Carolina’s average pay for travel nurses is around $2,500 weekly. The state has become increasingly popular due to its growing healthcare needs and relatively lower cost of living.

Virginia : Travel nurses in Virginia can expect to earn around $2,600 weekly. The state also boasts various employment benefits. Proximity to major cities increases competition and salaries for skilled nurses.

Illinois : In Illinois, especially in Chicago, travel nurses can earn roughly $2,800 weekly. Citing high demand regions allows nurses to negotiate their rates effectively.

Overall, while several states offer attractive compensation packages, each one has unique factors, including cost of living and healthcare demand, influencing a travel nurse’s ultimate financial reward.

What Factors Influence Travel Nurse Earnings?

Travel nurse earnings are influenced by several factors, including location, specialty, experience, and contract terms.

  • Experience Level
  • Contract Length
  • Healthcare Facility Type
  • Shift Schedule
  • Completion Bonuses

Understanding these factors provides valuable insights into how travel nurses can maximize their earning potential.

Location : Location significantly impacts travel nurse earnings. Travel nurses in high-demand areas, such as metropolitan cities or regions facing nursing shortages, often receive higher pay rates than those in less populated areas. For example, states like California and New York usually offer more lucrative contracts due to higher living costs and demand for healthcare services.

Specialty : The nursing specialty chosen affects earning potential as well. Critical care, emergency, and specialized areas like operating room nurses typically earn more than general staff nurses. According to a 2022 study by NursingWorld, nurses in specialized fields can command up to 30% higher pay than those in general nursing roles.

Experience Level : Experience plays a crucial role in determining pay. More experienced travel nurses often earn higher salaries. Healthcare facilities may pay a premium for seasoned nurses who can manage complex cases or train new staff. A report by Indeed in 2023 indicated experienced travel nurses could earn as much as 20% more than their less experienced counterparts.

Contract Length : The length of a travel nursing contract can influence salary. Generally, longer contracts may offer more stability but could have lower weekly pay rates. In contrast, shorter contracts may provide higher weekly wages to attract nurses quickly. A survey by Travel Nursing Central in 2021 found that travel nurses working shorter contracts saw pay increases of approximately 10-15%.

Healthcare Facility Type : The type of healthcare facility also affects pay rates. Travel nurses in hospitals, especially in emergency or trauma units, typically earn more than those in outpatient settings or clinics. High-acuity facilities may offer additional stipends for the more challenging work environment, as noted by Staffing Industry Analysts in 2023.

Shift Schedule : The shift schedule can influence earnings. Night shifts and weekend shifts often come with differential pay rates, allowing travel nurses to earn more. For instance, nurses working weekends might receive up to 15% more than those on regular weekday shifts, as highlighted by Medscape in their latest salary survey.

Completion Bonuses : Completion bonuses are incentives offered for finishing a contract, which can add significant value to a travel nurse’s total earnings. These bonuses can vary by agency and can sometimes exceed $1,000, according to the American Nurses Association.

In summary, travel nurse earnings are influenced by various factors, allowing nurses to navigate opportunities for maximizing their income. Understanding these influences is essential for making informed career decisions in the travel nursing field.

How Does Demand and Supply Impact Travel Nurse Salaries?

Demand and supply significantly impact travel nurse salaries. Travel nurse salaries increase when the demand for healthcare workers exceeds the available supply. When hospitals face staff shortages, they offer higher pay to attract qualified travel nurses. This trend often occurs during health crises, seasonal peaks, or in areas with fewer local nurses. Conversely, if the supply of nurses increases or if the demand decreases, salaries may drop. Factors such as changes in healthcare policies, economic conditions, and shifts in population demographics also influence this balance. Therefore, understanding the relationship between demand and supply helps explain variations in travel nurse salaries across different regions and time periods.

What Role Does Nursing Specialty Play in Salary Differences Among Travel Nurses?

Nursing specialty significantly impacts salary differences among travel nurses. Specialized skills often command higher pay due to increased demand and the complexity of care required in those areas.

Key factors influencing salary differences among travel nurses include: 1. Nursing Specialty 2. Geographic Location 3. Experience Level 4. Demand and Supply Dynamics 5. Facility Type 6. Compensation Packages

Understanding how these factors influence travel nurse salaries provides a clearer perspective on compensation in this evolving field.

Nursing Specialty : Nursing specialty refers to specific areas of expertise within the nursing profession, such as critical care, pediatrics, or geriatrics. Travel nurses with in-demand specialties often receive higher salaries. For example, a travel intensive care unit (ICU) nurse might earn more than a general medical-surgical nurse due to the critical care skills required.

Geographic Location : Geographic location plays a crucial role in salary differences. Areas with a higher cost of living or severe nursing shortages typically offer higher pay. States like California and New York often have higher rates for travel nurses compared to rural areas, reflecting regional demands and expenses.

Experience Level : Experience level indicates how long a nurse has practiced in their specialty. More experienced nurses usually earn higher wages. A seasoned travel nurse with several years in a critical care role can command a higher salary than an entry-level nurse in the same specialty.

Demand and Supply Dynamics : Demand and supply dynamics refer to market fluctuations influencing how many nurses are needed versus how many are available. During nursing shortages, such as those seen during health crises, travel nurses can negotiate higher wages due to increased demand.

Facility Type : Facility type includes the setting where care is provided, such as hospitals, outpatient clinics, or long-term care facilities. Travel nurses in high-acuity hospitals or specialized clinics tend to earn more than those in lower acuity or less specialized settings.

Compensation Packages : Compensation packages encompass hourly wages along with benefits like housing stipends, bonuses, and travel reimbursements. Comprehensive packages can enhance overall earnings and may differ based on assignment location and employer.

These factors illustrate the complex interplay between nursing specialties and salary differences among travel nurses, highlighting the need for careful consideration of specialties, locations, and experience when pursuing travel nurse opportunities.

How Do Travel Nurse Salaries Compare to Other Nursing Staff?

Travel nurse salaries are generally higher than those of permanent nursing staff due to the demand for their flexibility and specialized skills. The salary comparison reveals several key factors that influence earnings in both roles.

Base Salary: According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, registered nurses (RNs) earned a median annual salary of approximately $77,600 in 2022. In contrast, travel nurses typically earn between $1,800 to $3,500 per week, depending on location, specialty, and demand. This translates into annual earnings that can exceed $100,000, especially for those in high-demand specialties.

Short-Term Contracts: Travel nurses work on temporary contracts, often ranging from 8 to 26 weeks. This contract structure enables them to negotiate higher pay rates. Hospitals may offer premium rates to attract qualified nurses quickly for temporary positions, which may not be available to permanent staff.

Incentives and Stipends: Travel nurses usually receive additional benefits that are not commonly provided to traditional nursing staff. These may include housing stipends, travel reimbursements, and bonuses for completing assignments. For example, travel nurses can earn up to $1,000 per month for housing and additional bonuses for extending their contracts.

Geographic Variability: Salaries for both travel nurses and permanent nursing staff can vary significantly based on geographic location. According to a 2023 report by the Nursing Workforce Center, travel nurses in states like California and New York can earn significantly higher wages compared to those in states with a lower cost of living, like Mississippi or Arkansas.

Specializations: Certain nursing specialties can attract higher pay rates for both travel and permanent nurses. Critical care, emergency, and surgical nursing tend to command higher salaries. A survey conducted by MedPage Today in 2022 found that travel nurses in specialized fields could earn over 30% more than their counterparts in general nursing positions.

In summary, travel nurses tend to earn more than permanent nursing staff due to higher base salaries, the nature of short-term contracts, additional financial incentives, geographic pay variations, and specialty demand. These factors collectively contribute to making travel nursing a lucrative career choice for many professionals in the field.

Is the Salary of a Travel Nurse Considered Competitive?

Yes, the salary of a travel nurse is generally considered competitive. Travel nurses often earn higher wages than permanent nursing positions due to their specialized skills and temporary assignments. This competitive pay reflects the demand for nurses in various locations across the country.

Travel nurses typically receive salaries that are influenced by several factors. These factors include geographical location, the type of healthcare facility, and the nurse’s level of experience. For example, travel nurses in high-demand areas, such as California or New York, often earn premium rates. This can lead to pay rates ranging from $1,500 to over $3,500 per week, which is substantially higher than the average registered nurse salary in many states.

The advantages of being a travel nurse include greater earning potential and flexibility in choosing assignments. According to the American Nurses Association, travel nurses can earn up to 20% more than their stationary counterparts. Additionally, travel nurses frequently receive benefits such as housing stipends, travel reimbursements, and health insurance, which can enhance their overall compensation package. These factors contribute to the appeal of travel nursing as a career choice.

However, travel nursing also has some drawbacks. The instability of short-term contracts can lead to uncertainty in income and job security. Additionally, travel nurses may encounter challenges such as adapting to new environments, being away from home, and experiencing burnout from frequent relocations. A study by the Nursing Professional Development group (Smith, 2021) found that 30% of travel nurses reported feeling isolated or disconnected during assignments, which can affect mental health.

For those considering a career as a travel nurse, it is essential to weigh the benefits against the potential drawbacks. Evaluate personal preferences for job stability versus flexibility. Potential travel nurses should also research high-demand areas and negotiate contract terms that include competitive salaries and comprehensive benefits. Ensuring these factors align with individual lifestyle and career goals can lead to a rewarding experience in travel nursing.

The Ultimate List of Travel Nursing Agency Ratings

travel nursing agency ratings

It’s a great idea for travel nurses to review travel nursing agency ratings before deciding which companies to work with. But with so many rating services covering a relatively small industry, it can be difficult to discover the full picture. So in this article, we provide the ultimate shortcut. First, we provide links to 6 rating websites for each travel nursing company where available so you can conveniently check the ratings. Second, we provide the total number of reviews across all 6 platforms along with the average score for each company as of June 13th, 2017. This way, you can get a quick snapshot of how each company performed until that point.

Travel Nursing Agency Ratings Used to Determine List of Top Companies

This list of travel nursing agency ratings was used to compile our list of the top travel nursing companies for 2017 . In previous years, we ran articles comparing the lists of top companies compiled by Highway Hypodermics (HH) and Travel Nursing Central (TNC). In 2017, we decided to create a separate list of top companies. To do so, we aggregated the rating scores from 6 different rating websites for every travel nursing company we could find. Then, we ranked the companies according to their average scores. The 6 rating websites we used are as follows:

  • Travel Nursing Central (Identified as TNC in the table heading)
  • Highway Hypodermics (Identified as HH in the table heading)
  • Travel Nursing Blogs (Identified as TNB in the table heading)
  • Facebook (Identified as FB in the table heading)
  • Indeed (Identified as IN in the table heading)
  • GlassDoor (Identified as GD in the able heading)

Each of the six websites uses one of three scoring systems. TNC uses a 100 point system. HH uses a 20 point system for their travel nursing company evaluations. Travel Nursing Blogs, Facebook, Indeed and Glassdoor use the standard 5 star scoring system, or a 5 point system. Therefore, we had to choose one scoring system and convert the others to it. We chose the 100 point system.

Feedback from Travel Nurses and Agencies

We received a lot of great feedback when our article on the top travel nursing companies of 2017 was published. Both agencies and travelers requested to see the actual scores for each service and the calculations we made for the average score. Unfortunately, we’re not certain copyright laws would allow us to publicize a list of all the scores from every site.

We also received inquires from travelers who asked if we could publish a list of links to the ratings websites for each company. They wanted to conveniently check the ratings from one place by simply clicking the links. We thought that was a great idea! So, we compiled the list below using the list we created for the article listing the top companies.

We also included the total number of scores and average score for each company. Of course, the number of ratings on each site is constantly changing, so the figures on our list represent a single point in time. Specifically, our figures were collected during the second week of June, 2017. When all was said and done, we had compiled more than 28,000 ratings!

How To Use The List of Travel Nursing Agency Ratings

With all that in mind, we hope that both agencies and travelers will find this list useful.

For Travel Nursing Companies

Travel nursing companies can use the list in several ways. First, they can see how they scored on the list we used to determine the best companies of the year. They can also check their company’s links for each of the 6 rating websites to make sure we discovered the correct page on each site. Please let us know if you find an error and provide us with a correction if possible!

Agencies can also see how they scored relative to other agencies. They might be able to glean some insight into how their competitors are scoring across all platforms. This insight would certainly be helpful should an agency choose to make a concerted effort to increase their ratings. They might even work their way onto our list of best companies in future years!

For Travel Nurses

Travel nurses can use the list to conveniently check travel nursing agency ratings across the web. Without this list, you’d be stuck searching each of these websites to find a specific company’s page. This could take tons of time if you were researching multiple companies. Trust us, we did it for over 240 companies and it took forever!

Travel nurses can also use the average scores to get a quick snapshot of how each company was rated across all 6 platforms. The aggregated score offers a much larger sample size compared to any one platform on its own. In theory, this should provide a more accurate barometer for service expectations.

That said, we still highly recommend visiting the sites individually for two reasons. First, you’ll be able to read the reviews when available . These reviews can be very helpful in deciding whether or not the actual scores are indicative of services that are important to you . Second, the scores will undoubtedly change as time passes, so you’ll want to make sure you have an understanding of current performance before making your final decision.

About the Links to Travel Nursing Company Ratings

It’s important to note a few things about what to expect when using the links for each service.

The links for TNC should take you to the corresponding company’s specific review page on TNC. There, you should be able to see the rating scores along with written reviews where available.

All the links for Highway Hypodermics point to HH’s “Travel Company Evaluations” page. The page has a table with all the companies that have been rated through the service, their scores and questionnaire details. If there is a link on our list, then the corresponding company is on HH’s list. If there is not a link, then the company was not on HH’s list at the time we compiled our list.

The Facebook (FB) links point to the corresponding agency’s Facebook Page. The Facebook page will display a review summary if the company has the review feature enabled and has received at least one review. To be clear, Facebook allows Page Administrators to disable the review feature. Many companies have chosen to disable reviews on Facebook. However, we included a link to every company page we found on Facebook regardless of whether ratings were enabled or not.

The links for TNB point to the corresponding agency’s review page on TNB. These pages display the agency’s average rating along with written reviews when available. If there is a link on our list, then the company has a review page on TNB. If there is not a link on our list, then the company did not have a review page on TNB at the time we compiled the list.

The Indeed (IN) links point to the corresponding company’s page on Indeed. These pages display the company’s average rating along with written reviews when available. We included links for all company pages we could find on Indeed whether or not the company had any ratings to display.

The GlassDoor links (GD) point to the corresponding company’s page on GlassDoor. These pages include a host of information including the company’s average rating score and written reviews when available. We included a link for all company pages we could find on GlassDoor whether or not the company had any ratings to display.

Keeping the List of Travel Nursing Company Ratings Updated

As mentioned above, the travel nursing agency ratings on each of the 6 rating websites are updated frequently. As a result, we encourage you to follow the links for companies you’re interested in to make sure you get the most recent information. We will update the total number of reviews and the average score annually in conjunction with our annual article on the best travel nursing companies of the year. It was last updated on 6/13/2017.

It’s also important to remember that both the internet and companies are in constant flux. If the links for these web pages change, then you may get directed to a “404 page” or even the wrong page. Please let us know and we’ll replace the links with their updated version when possible.

Additionally, companies will go out of business, get bought, and start anew. Please let us know if you notice a change with a company and we’ll update the list. If you want to add a new company to the list, then please provide the company’s name, website, and at least one source for ratings and we’ll get them added!
