Inner Line Permits

Inner Line Permits

The inner line permit (ILP) rules for Ladakh tourism have been simplified. There are certain requirements to be considered like a valid photo ID and attested photocopies that act as a proof of Nationality (Passport, DL, Voters ID etc.).

No inner line permits are now required to travel to places like Nubra Valley, Pangong Tso and Tso Moriri. However, there are some exceptions. In case one plans to cover a direct Stretch from Tso Moriri to Pangong Tso via Chushul route with a visit to Hanle, then one needs to give detailed information.

It is important to mention Pangong Tso, Man, Merak, Chushul, Tsaga, Loma, Nyoma, Mahe, Hanle and Tso Moriri in the permit application. Similarly, it is mandatory to apply for an Inner Line Permit, if you are planning to visit Pangong directly from Nubra via Shyok, Darbuk, Tangtse.

Inner Line Permits for Foreign Nationals

The foreign nationals must obtain the inner line permits, if they plan to visit areas like Turtuk, Panamik, Khaltse, Pangong, Changthang, Hunder, Tso Kar and Tso Moriri and few others. Also, to visit Hanle, Chusul, Tsaga, beyond Loma bend, Chumur, Marsimik La and Batalik Sector, they must have the inner line permits.

Foreign nationals, with exception from Bhutan, Burma, Nepal and Pakistan, also need to obtain PAP or the Protected Area Permit to visit the above-mentioned places. This permit is issued at the Leh DC Office and is allowed only to a group of four or more foreign nationals and is valid for 7 days.

While travelling Suru and Zanskar valleys, inner line permits are not required. However, this permit doesn't allow them to beyond Merek Village in the Mahe or Pangong village. Click Here to Book:   Manali Leh Manali Jeep Safari

Banbanjara thanks a lot for arranging a good trip had lifetime memories within a short period of time, everything was perfect, and its best, the ground people were awesome, there were no words to express and last but not least Banbanjara is the best 😍😍 hope will be meeting you soon Banbanjara 😍

Good experience

Great experience. Probably one of the best of my life. Very well organized especially by our tour guide and his whole crew. The planning done by them was very good. Great accommodations. Good bikes. Very helpful throughout the trip whenever required. Proper instructions were given throughout. all are well managed.😍😍

I would suggest everyone and anyone take up Banbanjara staff as their tour guide who was there to take care of anything and everything in everyday situations and who would also make things convenient as per our needs. they were truly the best guide. Not any problem occurred during the trip. Thanks ! Banbanjara

wonderful trip

I have always been a solo rider. Traveling in a group was so much fun, having a backup vehicle made things even better. All the hotels and meals being booked made my life easier and of course - all the great friends I have made - were the cherry on the cake :) it's a nice time spending for me.

To start with I had the most adventurous ride of a lifetime. A bike trip allows you to experience the best just in front of your eyes and Manali to Leh was one of my dream destinations. The word that follows will be a huge WOW. I went with my 2 friends and once we reached there we were provided with our bikes. Another best thing was that the fuel was included in the package. This is a must-trip for the bikers.

Deepak Kaul

The trip sure will test your resolve and character as challenges on and off the road, altitude sickness, scarcity of your conventional food, etc. But once past that the memories you make are pure and will last for life! I sincerely feel relieved to take the trip through Banbanjara and not attempt a solo ride on our own. This trip is for those who are willing to push themselves a bit extra to experience the Adventure of a Lifetime!!

Vikrant Pratap

Fabulous, awesome, great, thrilling, exciting, perfect. None of them can express it. You need to experience it to feel it and all this because of the management of Banbanjara. I went with my wife and the trip turned out to be memories that can be cherished for a lifetime. Thanks, to everyone once again.🥰🥰

The way they have taken care of each and every individual on board is remarkable and outstanding. the team was well prepared for any kind of situation. All the team members are very jolly and friendly which adds to the fun of travel. and This experience is definitely going to be an unforgettable one and I would recommend everyone for this adventure trip.

The trip from Leh Ladakh to Manali was just cool. I totally loved the biking experience in the mesmerizing snow and mountain peaks. Will surely go again.😍😍😍😍

"\"PURE BLISS!!\" One of the most memorable trips of my life. \"Must do\" trip for each youngster.. it was a very well-managed trip by Banbanjara in association with the operator. I was a solo Traveller for this trip.. but let me tell u, I never felt the discomfort of being a solo girl Traveller on this trip. they took good care of each one of us.

Today, we are going to ride towards Jispa on the much-celebrated Manali-Leh Highway. Leaving early is pivotal as we need to cross the mighty Rohtang Pass (3978m) early in the day, before it gets too crowded. After crossing Rohtang, the landscape changes drastically as we enter the Lahaul and Spiti District. The lush green grasslands disappear and the barren slopes of the cold dessert take over. We continue the ride towards Jispa crossing the quaint mountain towns of Sissu and Keylong. Arrive at the destination early in the evening and have an adventurous overnight stay in tents. Day 04: Jispa to Sarchu(4290m) | 90km      Grade/Duration - Difficult/Approx. 6 Hours Altitude Gain - 1090m Highlights - Deepak Tal, Baralacha La, Riding along Tsarap River

Keep yourself completely hydrated by drinking a tonne of water as we are going to spend the night at above 4000mt altitude. Today’s ride is one of the shortest rides of the expedition but the adrenaline level remains high as the terrain is full of adventure. After crossing Darcha, keep riding on the Manali-Leh Highway towards Deepak Tal. The road from here starts to ascend steeply towards the treacherous Baralacha Pass(4890m), negotiating Zing Zing Bar and crossing the stunning emerald lake, known as Suraj Tal. Just after crossing Baralacha, halt for some time and have some well-deserved lunch near Bharatpur. We continue our ride to Sarchu on the same road, although the terrain gets changed quite a bit along the way and Tsarap River is visible on the left side carving and raging through the mountains. Arrive in Sarchu later in the day and be prepared for a rather uncomfortable overnight stay in a tent. Day 05: Sarchu to Leh(3500m) | 250km

Grade/Duration - Difficult/Approx. 8 Hours Altitude Loss - 1090m Highlights - Gata loops, Nakee La, Lachung La, Morey Plains, Tanglang La, Riding along Indus River

Start riding after an early breakfast as today’s going to be a long but exciting day of riding. Water-Crossings are a common sight on the road while riding to Leh and the ideal time to cross them is early in the day. Just after leaving Sarchu, we start to ascend towards Nakee La(4769m), crossing the zig-zag Gata Loops which is a series of 21 hairpin bends within a span of just 7km. The descent from Nakee La is barely even finished and the ascent towards another high pass, Lachung La(5059m) begins. The descent from Lachung La brings us to the town of Pang(4600m) where we halt for Lunch. The landscape starts to change after crossing Pang and the plateau of Morey Plains starts and stretches for 45km. Closer to the end of the plains, we start climbing the Tanglang La(5328m), the highest motorable pass on the Manali-Leh Highway. After crossing the 3rd high pass of the day, continue riding towards Leh along the mighty Indus River on the left side. Reach Leh in the evening and relax in the hotel. Day 06: Rest Day in Leh Replenish your energies with a healthy breakfast and enjoy a relaxing day in Leh. The first half of the day is saved for a regular check-up of the bikes and the rest of the day can be spent visiting a few sightseeing places in and around the city. Stop by the Leh Palace and enjoy the splendid panoramic views of the Stok Kangri mountain range from the terrace. You may also choose to visit the Shanti Stupa and the local market to indulge in some shopping and try out the Ladakhi cuisine at the local eateries. Spend the night at the hotel. Day 07: Leh to Nubra (3048m) | 160km      Grade/Duration - Difficult/Approx. 7 Hours Altitude Loss - 452m Highlights - Khardung La, Diskit Monastery

After a rather relaxed day in Leh, we continue our expedition and start riding towards Nubra Valley through what’s considered the highest motorable road in the world i.e. Khardung La(5359m). The road towards the pass is well paved and tarred till the checkpoint near South Pullu and after crossing the checkpoint, the road starts to get slushy with loose rocks on one side. Get yourself clicked after reaching Khardung La and hit the road quickly as it is not safe to spend much time on top of the pass due to the high altitude and thin air. We stop for a quick lunch after climbing down from the pass and then continue our journey. After riding for another couple of hours, we make a brief stop to visit the 32m high Maitreya Buddha statue in Diskit Monastery. Our arrival in the valley will be welcomed by the white sand dunes and the sightings of the double-hump Bactrian camels grazing. Stay overnight at the hotel/campsite. Day 08: Nubra to Pangong(4250m) | 260km      Grade/Duration - Difficult/Approx. 8 Hours Altitude Gain -1202m Highlights - Riding along Shyok River, Water Crossings

After having breakfast, we start riding towards the most photographed destination in Ladakh, Pangong Lake. Despite the fact that we are not going to cross any high pass today, the ride should be quite interesting as we ride on the much less traveled road via Shyok. Most of our ride is going to be along the beautiful Shyok River and through the villages like Agham, Shyok, Durbuk, and Tangste. The road remains slushy along with some exciting water crossings and rocky terrain so being cautious is important. After crossing Durbuk, the last stretch of the ride is going to be along the lake. From the very first glimpse, the lake leaves an everlasting impression on the visitors. Get yourself photographed and just admire the wonder that is this shimmering blue lake. Overnight stay in tents.  Day 09: Pangong to Leh(3500m) | 150km      Grade/Duration - Moderate/Approx. 5 Hours Altitude Loss - 750m Highlights - Chang La, Druk White Lotus School

Wake up to an enchanting sunrise over Pangong Tso and recommence your Ladakh expedition. Today we are going to ride the same route that we rode yesterday and after crossing Durbuk, we will start climbing the third highest motorable pass in the world, Chang La(5360m). After crossing Chang La, we halt for Lunch. After eating, we start our journey to Lah via Karu from where we start riding on the Manali-Leh Highway. Just before reaching Leh, we are going to pass through the Thiksey monastery and the popular Druk White Lotus School. There will be a short halt to explore the monastery and take some pictures. After riding for approximately an hour, we will arrive in Leh for the second time during the expedition. Stay Overnight in a hotel. Day 10: Leh to Kargil(2676m) | 220km      Grade/Duration - Moderate/Approx. 6 Hours Altitude Loss - 824m Highlights - Fotu La, Namika La, Lamayuru Monastery

The ride from Leh to Kargil takes relatively less time as the roads are in pretty decent condition. We bid adieu to Leh and follow the mighty Indus River towards Kargil on the Leh-Srinagar Highway. The landscape is mesmerizing all along the way as we ride through a spectacular moonscape to reach Lamayuru, which is home to the highest located monastery in the region. Just after Lamayuru, we start the gradual climb towards the Fotu La(4108m) and after climbing down the pass we start the climb towards another high pass which is Namika La(3700m). Both of these passes are in the Zanskar range and take us into the Musbekh Valley. We pass through multiple picturesque villages en route to Kargil. Stay overnight. Day 11: Kargil to Srinagar(1585m) | 202km      Grade/Duration - Difficult/Approx. 7 Hours Altitude Loss - 1091m Highlights - Dras War Memorial, Zoji La

Wake up the chilly Himalayan air and get ready for what is going to be one of the most incredible riding experiences. We check out of our accommodation and start riding towards the Kashmir Valley via Dras, which is regarded as the second coldest inhabited place on earth. Just before reaching Dras, we take a short break at the Dras War Memorial. After Dras, we start riding uphill towards Zoji La(3528m) and the views from the top are just indescribably beautiful. After crossing the pass we enter the breathtaking valley of Sonamarg which is a major tourist destination. Another couple of hours of riding through the valley take us to Srinagar. Stay overnight in a houseboat/hotel. Day 12: Srinagar to Pathankot (332m) | 330km      Grade/Duration - Easy/Approx. 10 Hours Altitude Loss - 1253m Highlights - Riding down Himalayas, Jawahar Tunnel, Syama Tunnel

Today’s ride is going to take us through the stunning valleys of Kashmir to the plains of Pathankot in Punjab. Although the distance is rather long, the riding pace should be quite swift as we will be climbing down and the road conditions are pretty decent. On the way to Pathankot, we are going to pass through two of the biggest tunnels in the region i.e. Jawahar Tunnel(2.85km) and Dr Syama Prasad Mookerjee Tunnel(9.2km). Arrive at the hotel and have a good night of sleep as tomorrow is also going to be a long day of riding. Day 13: Pathankot to Delhi (216m) | 485km      Grade/Duration - Easy/Approx. 11 Hours Altitude Loss - 116m Highlights - Lush Green landscape throughout

Today marks the last day of this once in a lifetime adventure. We need to start as early as possible as the distance to be covered today is the longest on this 13-day expedition. The journey should be pretty uneventful as we are going to be riding on wide tarmac roads through the plains of Punjab and Haryana. Arrive in the capital by late evening and reach the very place where it all started from. Get photographed with the entire gang one last time on this epic voyage and bid farewell to your motorcycle and your fellow riders. Trip Ends.

FAQs for Leh Ladakh Bike Tours:

1. What are the different routes to reach Leh?  Leh is accessible by road essentially from two different regions i.e. Kashmir Valley in west and Himachal in south. To get the best Ladakhi experience, one should enter from  Manali and exit in Srinagar or vice versa.   2. What is the ideal duration for a Ladakh bike trip? A bona fide Ladakh bike trip takes a minimum of 11 days if you want to experience all that this remote cold deserted region has to offer. There’s also an option of doing a Ladakh bike trip in 5-6 days if you fly in/out of Leh and cover places such as Nubra and Pangong. Although, flying in/out implies that you miss the adventures that the Manali-Leh Highway and the Srinagar-Leh Highway offer. 3. What is the ideal season to visit Ladakh? The open season for Ladakh is between June to September if you want to ride across all the high altitude passes such as Rohtang La, Baralacha La and Khardung La. 4. What type of clothing/gear is required for a Ladakh bike trip? Carrying the right kind of clothing is extremely important as you encounter all sorts of difficult weather/terrains ranging from humidity to biting cold and water crossings to snow-covered passes. The idea is to keep you warm and dry. Full body thermals along with a jacket are absolute necessities. A rain suit along with high ankle waterproof shoes/gumboots are to be carried. About the riding equipment, elbow guards and knee pads provide much-required safety apart from the helmet. 5. What are the must-see places during a Ladakh bike trip? Rohtang La, Baralacha La, Leh, Khardung La, Nubra Valley, Turtuk, Pangong Tso, Chang La, Tso Moriri, Kargil, Batalik, Zoji La, Srinagar. 6. What type of motorcycle is suited for Ladakh? The terrain on a Ladakh bike trip changes drastically in different locations. There should be enough power in the engine to manoeuvre through high passes and terrains such as slush, snow and even water crossings. Although Adventure Motorcycles are ideal, any motorcycle having a 200cc engine or above should do the job.  7. How good is the tourist infrastructure in Ladakh? Biking in Ladakh has become one of the most popular road trips in the world and that’s why the tourist infrastructure gets better every year. There are plenty of options available for accommodation/food throughout the entire biking circuit. Mobile reception is available only in the major towns so be prepared to be off the grid for some time.

Reviews for The Dream Ride Motor Bike Expedition to Ladakh

Awesome experience!

Go for it guys! It is the best possible choice if you are looking for bike trip to Ladakh. Had an awesome time with the group.

Value for money, food was delicious, and the team was excellent in handling the member and the bikes. No issues faced at all. Thanks for the adventure folks!

I travelled all the way from Kolkata just to experience the beauty of Ladakh in most adventurous way possible and it proved to be worth all the effort I made. Everything was perfect in terms of service and food.

2500 kms plus in 13 days of this Motorbike Expedition to Ladakh. Oh God, what an experience! I will never forget this ride. But you know what was the best part about this bike trip to Ladakh? The ride operators were so cool! and so approachable! The mechanics were very knowledgeable. The bikes performed well. And we rode them on such diverse kinds of roads so it was amazing that not even one broke down midway. Even while off-roading and river crossing, the whole thing was so much fun!!! I would do it again and again each year. Thanks, Adventure Nation for making this possible!

A bike trip to Ladakh is not the easiest of things to accomplish but all its difficulty fades away in the face of how satisfying it is when you finish the whole thing and not just that...even while you're on it, even while you're riding all the way to Ladakh you're feeling amazing no matter how hard the terrain looks like. And then there are particular moments in the bike trip that make you feel extra spectacular, especially camping in Nubra and looking at Pangong lake. Waking up to a sunrise at Pangong Tso is one of the best visuals to feast your eyes on! Thanks for this experience, Adventure Nation.

The most important part of a bike trip to anywhere is how much you can rely on the bikes. Because I have been on many bike trips before and twice to Ladakh, if your bike is giving you problems even after the test ride and getting it initially checked, then the trip is going to be tiring. That's why I wanted to make sure I go with the best guys. I booked this trek through Adventure Nation for a departure in August. Adventure Nation put us with the best bike trip operators in the game, thanks so much! Whole trip was so tension-free, thanks to that. The operators have been doing it for the longest time so they have an idea of what they are trying to do here! Thanks again!!!

My bike trip to Ladakh was my bachelor's trip as a last trip with the boys right before my wedding. To say the least, it was so good and so refreshing, it was the best thing I could've asked for. I LOVED everything about it. The rental bikes were great and in great shape to be driven down bumpy roads or good roads or river bed roads or off-roading altogether. And I had all these experiences on this trip! This one was such a delight, by the end we were already making plans to revisit. Thanks so much Adventure Nation for making this so special!

Almost a lifelong dream, this biking trip was so long due. Honestly, it will stay fresh in my memories for a long time from now. Loved the people that went with us. Almost ten of us were there. Out of which three were my friends who I had planned this trip with. Man, thanks for the amazing service. The bikes were in great shape and the food and the staying arrangement was also taken care of in the best way possible. This is why I chose you, Adventure Nation.

This is my first time on a biking trip but second time with Adventure Nation. Last time I went to Hampta pass trek. Had amazing fun there as well. This time it was a blast! It was so much fun with all the people including the staff that was with us to look after the bikes and our food and accommodations. I am still so excited. Never had a better experience.

We covered close to 2500 kms on our bike tour to Ladakh. The route we were given was great, because it covered most of the picturesque trails that we were hoping to ride through. We also camped along side Pangong Tso lake, which was definitely the best campsite. Remember to pack light because you will not need as much clothes as you will need biking gear and other necessary stuff. Also, get some experience of long bike rides before you do this because it will tire you a little sometimes. But we always stuck to the plan till the end!

Take the ride of your life but plan adequately before you decide to go. Better to book through an agency like Adventure Nation, because we were given a detailed itinerary and full mechanical support throughout. And you don't have to carry extra stuff like camping materials and all if you go with them. Also if you are going solo it is safer to go with these guys because you will definitely find some rider friends. Amazing trip. Ladakh is a beauty obviously, and the winds that touch you when you ride through it will give you a feeling out of this world.

I have made two trips to Ladakh before this. Once was on a vacation, and the other time was a biking trip. This time I booked through Adventure Nation along with two of my friends. What a fun time. Had amazing time there. The itinerary was great and we did not have to look around for accommodation and meals as it was all taken care of. Amazing! Thanks for the time.

Leh Ladakh Bike Trip

Get the best holiday planned by experts, best leh ladakh bike trip packages, leh ladakh bike trip guide.

A Leh Ladakh bike trip is probably at the top of the wish list for every biker in India. The city of Leh, flanked on all sides by the Himalayas, is one of the most highly rated travel destinations across the world. But what makes it even better, is doing it by road.

The route is filled with barren mountain slopes of the Great Himalayan and Karakoram ranges, snow-clad peaks, monasteries, challenging roads, and other mesmerizing views which will compel you to stop for a picture on every turn. ...

The Manali-Leh highway is the more popular of the two, owing to the number of mountains passes, and rivers along the way. The distance from Manali to Leh is 490 kilometers. The highway is built and maintained by the Border Roads Organization, a part of the Indian Army. The iconic Rohtang pass lies on this route on the Pir Panjal range, connecting Kullu, Lahaul and Spiti. Sarchu is the mid-point between Manali and Leh, however, Keylong is the preferred halting point on this highway while travelling from Manali to Leh, as Sarchu is at a considerably higher altitude.

Although the routes are open for tourists from May, a road trip to Leh can be hampered by road blockages due to heavy snowfall at Rohtang and Baralacha passes till early June. Also, there is a probability of roadblocks due to landslides during the monsoon in June which can cause unplanned delays on the ride.

The Srinagar-Leh highway, also called National Highway – 1D is 434 kilometers long. It is connected to Leh-Ladakh via the Kashmir Valley. This is the more reliable of the two highways, as there are plenty of options for accommodation and re-fueling as compared to the Manali-Leh highway. Sonmarg, Zojila pass, Kargil, and a few monasteries, are the major attractions on this highway.

Ladakh Bike Tour Guide:

There are quite a few things that you’ll need to consider while planning for a Leh Ladakh bike trip. First and foremost is, the time of the year. The road to Leh is open for tourists from May to October. Although, roads may be blocked due to landslides and snowfall in May. Although vehicles not registered under the Himachal Pradesh government are banned on the Manali-Rohtang pass, there is no restriction on bikes.

It is imperative to carry all documents of personal identification and bike registration. Additionally, both the highways have a few check posts along the way, and you have to register yourself and your bike at these check posts and display your permits wherever required for security reasons.

A Leh Ladakh bike ride takes skill as the terrain is difficult, and oxygen levels are thinner than usual. You need to be an experienced rider before undertaking this journey. You ought to learn fixes for common problems, and about the maintenance of the bike, as the mechanical shops would be hard to find. Make sure that your bike is serviced, and prepared before you begin the ride. Do not forget to carry a basic repair kit for fixing minor glitches on the road by yourself.

Things to carry on Ladakh bike trip:

The Ladakh bike trip is challenging, and hence, a lot of preparation is required before you start your journey. The weather, the terrain and the overall situation is quite different from how it is across the rest of India. Hence, there are a few precautions that must be taken to ensure a safe and comfortable ride.

Wear proper riding gear including rain and windproof riding jacket, waterproof riding shoes, a full-face helmet and winter gloves

Ensure that the rucksack, or bag used for packing your stuff is waterproof to protect it from rain and snow

Extra pair of trekking shoes, woolen socks, warm clothes like jackets, sweaters, gloves, thermal wear etc. and rain wear for protection against showers It is advisable to carry a hat and scarves to protect yourself from the harsh sunlight, and sunglasses with UV protection.

It is advisable to carry a hat and scarves to protect yourself from the harsh sunlight, and sunglasses with UV protection.

A basic tool kit for minor repairs on the bike, extra cans for petrol, puncture repair kit, extra bungee cables, spare tubes, spare clutch cable

In terms of medicines, you will need sunscreen lotions (SP40+), pain relieving sprays, headache tablets as prescribed by a doctor. As the weather is cold and dry, moisturizers and lip balms would be handy.

Only a mobile charger will probably not suffice, and you will need a power bank too.

Carry your camera, tripods, and all the related accessories if you do not wish to miss out on some breath-taking landscape photographs. Spare camera batteries would be useful too.

As the ATMs are few, and might be out of cash due to the crowd of tourists, it would help to carry adequate amount of cash

Finally, remember that as a tourist, it might be a vacation for you, but the place is home for many. Do not litter and avoid the use of plastic.

Eligibility for Leh Ladakh bike trip:

A Ladakh trip is challenging, and without necessary precautions, can lead to a few health issues. To add to it, a bike trip would hold even more challenges. Hence, it is necessary to include a few important points in your plan to ensure a fun-filled and safe trip.

Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) is a common occurrence in the mountains, and it is necessary that you take at least a day to acclimatize to the higher altitudes.

Do not underestimate the distances while planning. Due to the higher altitudes and bad roads, it would be difficult to cover a higher distance in a single day. Even if you can do 1000 kilometers in a day on highways, do not plan to cover 300-400 kilometers in the mountains in one go.

Avoid alcohol consumption, and smoking. It adversely affects the breathing ability which may cause you to suffer from AMS.

It is not advisable for first timers to do a Leh Ladakh bike ride. Everything about the terrain is hostile if you are an inexperienced rider, the road conditions, the cold weather, and difficulty in breathing. These conditions are challenging even for the most seasoned riders.

Plan the entire trip before-hand, with your breaks, overnight halts, kilometers to ride each day, and reserve days. Don’t rush on the road trip, and do not go unplanned.

Best bike for Leh Ladakh bike trip:

Till a few years ago, when you thought about a Leh Ladakh bike trip, you would think of a Royal Enfield. But with the introduction of new bikes in the touring segment, the biking fraternity is spoilt for choices. The choice of bike depends on various factors, the number of days and distance you intend to ride, the weight of your luggage, and also, if you have a pillion with you. Another important factor that you need to consider is the fuel capacity, and the distance covered on a full tank. Since the mileage reduces at higher altitudes, it is necessary to have fuel cans with you to avoid being stranded in the middle of nowhere.

Any bike would need to be serviced thoroughly, and the rider must be used to riding long distances on it. There are instances where people have ridden something as simple as a Hero Honda Splendor and come back with great stories.

Let’s look at a few bikes that can make your ride comfortable:

1. Royal Enfield: Both the 350 cc and the 500 cc variants of Royal Enfield, including the Classic and Thunderbird, have been extensively used by riders for a Leh Ladakh trip. The latest addition to the adventure tourer section, the Himalayan, is marketed as the bike for a Leh Ladakh bike trip. These bikes offer a good amount of pillion comfort as well, although maneuvering such heavy bikes across the uneven terrain can be tricky if you are not used to it.

2. KTM Duke: The Duke is another fan favorite for this ride, and for a good reason. On the steep slopes, a powerful bike goes a long way in making the entire riding experience better. The Duke does just that. Apart from the 200, 250 and 390 cc variants, the latest addition to the Indian KTM family is the Adventure 390. Although the KTM RC variants are equally powerful, the sports bike posture could make riding long distances a little uncomfortable.

3. Bajaj bikes: Another popular touring bike on the Indian roads is the Bajaj Dominar. It offers a good riding posture, fair amount of power, and decent pillion comfort too. Another popular Bajaj bike, the Pulsar with its 220cc variants, is also a great option for the Ladakh road trip.

Although these bikes are a popular choice, there are many other bikes that can be used for your Ladakh trip. It all depends on how comfortable the rider is with the bike.

Popular Ladakh bike trip routes

Ladakh bike trip from manali.

As we saw earlier, Ladakh road trip can be done via two routes viz. the Srinagar-Leh highway and the Manali-Leh highway.

1. Manali-Leh Highway: Manali-Leh highway is the higher used route for the Ladakh road trip, due to the beautiful sights that are on offer here. The distance between Manali and Leh via this route is 490 kilometers, and the route is as follows:

Manali – Rohtang – Keylong – Jispa – Darcha – Zingzing Bar – Mountain range as Baralacha La – Sarchu – Tanglang La – Upshi – Leh

Best time to travel:

The Manali-Leh highway is open from May to September for tourists, with July to September being the preferred time to make this road trip. The roads are in better condition, and the hotels on the way are completely operational. The month of July sees a lot of tourist rush till Rohtang pass, and this continues till August. While people travelling in the month of May or early June usually fly into Leh, and plan from there on.

The month of September is the better time for a Ladakh road trip. The road conditions are much improved, and the tourist season is coming to an end. Hence, the number of vehicles, and crowd on the roads, is considerably lesser.

Places to stay on Manali-Leh highway:

Finding a place to stay is a little difficult on the Manali-Leh highway for tourists. Although there are plenty of hotels on this highway, this number reduces drastically when you cross Jispa and move towards Leh.

Another option to stay on this highway are the campsites. They are located all along the highway. The food, and other facilities are very basic, but comfortable enough to stay overnight and start afresh the next day.

Fuel availability: The availability of petrol pumps is a major concern on the Manali-Leh highway, and it is advisable to carry cans for extra fuel while doing this road trip. Tandi is the last petrol pump at 110 kilometers from Manali towards Leh, and hence most riders refuel here.

2. Srinagar-Leh Highway

The Srinagar-Leh highway is the lesser used route to get to Leh. The distance between Srinagar and Leh is 434 kilometers, and this is the route:

Srinagar Drass – Kargil Leh

The Srinagar-Leh highway is open from May to October, with late June to early July being one of the best times to take this road.

September is also an excellent time to travel on this route as there will hardly be any streams on the way, and the chances of encountering a landslide are also minimal. And the landscape would be beautiful at this time of the year.

Places to stay on Srinagar-Leh highway:

There are plenty of places to stay on the Srinagar-Leh highway. From the most budget-friendly accommodations to the more luxurious and comfortable ones, you’ll get them all. Also, you can experience a stay at a houseboat in Srinagar.

Fuel availability:

Although there are more petrol pumps on this route, there is a chance of them being non-functional at times. It is best advised to re-fuel at the closest petrol pump.

Manali to Leh and back:

The Manali to Ladakh road trip is an experience in itself. And a few people prefer to return via the same route. This is how the route pans out:

Day 1: Manali to Jispa

Jispa is 150 kms from Manali. It is recommended to start the ride early in the morning to avoid being on the road after the sunset. Also, reaching your destination early spares you with plenty of time to explore, and rest.

You will pass through the Rohtang pass and the Lahaul valley on this journey. The stay in Jispa is pretty basic, and comfortable to stay overnight.

Day 2: Jispa to Sarchu

Beyond Jispa, the mighty Himalayas start becoming a part of the entire landscape. Here, you will ride via the Baralacha pass at an altitude of 5000 meters above sea level. The ride is 120 kilometers long overnight stay  at sarchu

Day 3: Sarchu to Leh

Sarchu to Leh is 215 kilometers, and this route goes through Tanglang Pass, at a height of 5300 meters above sea level. You will also see the monasteries Thiksey and Shay while on this route and visit to  Shanti stupa

Day 4: Leh to Nubra Valley

Nubra valley is one of the top places to visit in Leh Ladakh, and it is famous for the sand dunes, and the Bactrian camel (Two-humped camel). Khardung la, the highest motorable road in the world, lies on this route (18360 feet). The Diskit monastery on the way is also worth visiting on the way to Nubra.

Day 5: Nubra Valley to Pangong Lake

The distance from Nubra to Pangong is 270 kilometers. Pangong lake is among the most famous of Ladakh tourist places. 1/3 rd part of the lake lies in India while the remaining part lies in China. Chang la pass lies on this route, and it is at a height of 5500 meters above sea level.

Day 6: Pangong to Leh

Leh is 150 kilometers from Pangong. You can explore the Leh Palace, the mountain views and the Leh market, before retiring for the day.

Day 7: Leh to Sarchu

This is the beginning of the return journey. You can camp at Sarchu overnight before starting for Manali the next day.

Day 8: Sarchu to Manali

This is the last day of the journey. You can explore Manali before leaving for your destination the next day.

Ladakh bike trip from Srinagar to Manali

The Srinagar-Manali route is an adventure in itself. You get to witness the valleys of Kashmir as well as the mountains and lakes in Ladakh.

Day 1: Srinagar to Kargil

While riding from Srinagar to Kargil, Zoji La pass (11,575 feet) and Drass village are on the way. The total distance from Srinagar to Kargil is 225 kilometers. Sonmarg also happens to fall on this way, and you can choose to stay here overnight.

Tso Moriri and Hanle:

Although the most commonly visited places in Leh include Leh city, Nubra Valley and Pangong lake, there are a couple of other attractions which are not visited as frequently. The Tso Moriri Lake and Hanle are two such places.

Tso Moriri:

Tso Moriri is the largest high-altitude lake in India which is entirely within the Indian borders. The lake offers a picturesque view with different shades of blue. You can stay at the village called Korzok which is near Tso Moriri.

Tso Moriri is close to Sarchu while coming from Manali towards Leh. Hence, it would be a good idea to travel to Tso Moriri, and proceed from there. If you are planning to ride to Tso Moriri from Leh, you can take the route via Pangong Lake, and proceed towards Manali via this route. The distance from Sarchu to Tso Moriri is 220 kilometers, while from Leh, it is at a distance of 240 kilometers. The Tso Kar lake is at a distance of 80 kilometers from Tso Moriri, and can be visited on the way to Sarchu.

Hanle is a village in the Changthang region of Ladakh. It is one of the most enchanting and calm villages in Ladakh. The Hanle monastery is a major tourist attraction here, while Indian Astronomical Observatory should not be missed too. It is one of the highest observatories in the world.

Hanle is located between Pangong Tso and Tso Moriri. There are a few guest houses, and homestays, which can arrange for your accommodation in Hanle.

You will need an Inner Line Permit to visit Hanle as well as Tso Moriri.

Why do a Leh Ladakh bike ride?

Although reaching Leh by a flight is a very convenient option, there are several reasons why this makes a great road trip.

The Leh Ladakh road trip is one of the most coveted road trips in the country owing to the varied landscape consisting of rivers, snow-clad mountains, and a number of lakes. The road is challenging, and a true test for the adventure junkie in you.

There are so many places to visit in Ladakh and so much to explore, that having a bike to ride on makes it a little less daunting. The feeling of being all by yourself in the mountains, realizing how tiny a being you are while staring at the snow-clad peaks is one of the most liberating feelings ever.

This place is called ‘Heaven on Earth’ for a reason. The landscape changes all along the road. To add to it, the flora and fauna you get to witness is something that you cannot see in other parts of India.

Also, when on the road, you can interact with a lot of local people. You get to know how things are different in the mountains, how the people survive, and even enjoy the local food with them.

The magnificent mountains, and the low density of population offers a great respite from the crowd in the cities. It has a calming effect that cannot be replicated by any other means.

Why should you not ride solo if you don’t do regular bike rides:

There are a number of reasons why it is not recommended to do a Ladakh bike trip on your own, especially if you don’t do regular bike rides. However, if you have experienced riders with you, they will be able to guide you better.

Let’s look at the challenges that you can face as a solo rider making this trip:

Weather condition

The weather in this part of the country is as harsh as it can get. Also, since the altitude is higher, breathing becomes very difficult, and the reduced oxygen levels may lead to Acute Mountain Sickness.

Road condition

The roads are very uneven, and you may encounter water-crossings in a few places, which would be difficult to get past if not for a helping hand. Even the most experienced bikers face difficulties in such conditions.

Bike maintenance

If you cannot perform basic maintenance and repairs on the bike, there is a chance that you could be stranded in the middle of nowhere pushing 100+ kilos of scrap metal. Also, as an inexperienced rider, it is difficult to keep your concentration going for long rides, when the road condition deteriorates.

Hence, there are always groups organizing these rides, who have you covered on all bases in terms of medical facilities, fuel, mechanic, guides etc. There are various attractive Ladakh tour packages as well which can help you accomplish this journey.

However, some of the most recommended bikes are the Royal Enfields, Bajaj Pulsar, KTM Duke, and Yamaha FZ and Fazer. 2. What are the criteria for joining the bike tour? You should be above 25 years of age and have a driving license. Pangong Lake is the most important tourist attraction of Ladakh. This blue expanse of Endorik Lake is located at an elevation of 4350 meters and looks as if it is a piece of heaven that fell to the earth. Surrounded by barren mountains, this lake is probably one of the most beautiful lakes in Ladakh. Pangong is a transboundary lake that stretches for about 134 kilometers between India and China. About one-third of the lake is in India and its average width is about 5 kilometers and it is the largest saltwater lake in the world. The banks of the lake are so stunning that many Bollywood films have been shot here. One thing that attracts tourists here is that saltwater reaction occurs when the sunlight falls in different colors of water.

Nubra Valley is a tri-armed valley located northeast of the Ladakh Valley. About 150 km north of the city of Leh, the capital of Ladakh administrative division of Jammu and Kashmir, India, is the headquarters of the subdivision and Nubra tehsil. Local scholars state that its original name was Ldumra (Valley of Flowers). The Shyok River joins the Nubra or Siachan River forming a large valley that separates the Ladakh and Karakoram Ranges. The Shyok River is a subsidiary of the Indus River. The average elevation of the valley is about 10,000 feet i.e. 3048 meters above sea level. The most common way to reach this valley is to travel from Leh city to Khardung La Pass. Foreign nationals are required to obtain a protected area permit to travel to the Nubra Valley. Indian citizens are required to obtain an Inner Line Permit to visit the Valley from 1 April 2017.

manali to leh bike trip package

When it comes to picking a road trip, many would pick their favourite one as the most sought-after Manali to Leh trip, and we can’t agree more. The very journey through the rugged terrain on your vehicle is an experience that will be etched in your heart forever.

This time, if you set off on your road trip, seize the opportunity to explore the resplendent beauty of the region. With snow-capped mountains, distant valleys, and the refreshing mountain breeze, the journey becomes even more exhilarating. As you travel through the rugged terrain, you'll pass through some of Ladakh's most renowned passes, which will allow you to marvel at the awe-inspiring beauty of the region no doubt.

The best time to travel to Leh Ladakh via this route would be from June to September. If travelling by road, it typically takes at least 2 days to cover this 473 km route with ample stops for rest.

If you have also been planning to hit the road and enjoy this road trip, here are some places that you should add to your itinerary for an unforgettable Manali Leh road trip.

Perched at an elevation of 6725 ft above sea level, this hill station captivates with its enchanting vistas. While summers offer pleasant weather, winters adorn the peaks with glistening snow, rendering it a picturesque destination en route from Manali to Ladakh.

Rohtang Pass

En route from Manali to Leh, the Rohtang Pass offers breathtaking panoramic views. Situated 51 km from Manali at an altitude of 3900 m, this route leads to destinations, such as Pangi, Lahaul Spiti, and Leh, offering vistas of snow-capped peaks and glaciers, with the Chandra River flowing nearby.

Keylong Pass

Whether you seek scenic strolls through quaint villages or awe-inspiring mountain vistas, Keylong is one such place that you won’t want to miss. Set adjacent to this locale is the magnificent Bhaga Valley, replete with verdant greenery. Serving as the administrative centre of Lahaul and Spiti district, Keylong is a favoured stopover among tourists and trekkers en route from Manali to Ladakh for an overnight stay.

Nestled beside the Chandra River, Jispa is a picturesque hamlet offering a captivating stopover during the Manali – Leh tour. Adorned naturally with streams, scenic peaks, verdant valleys, and lush foliage, it offers visitors an intimate encounter with Mother Nature.

Discover the charming Himalayan village of Darcha, nestled beside the Bhaga River, roughly 23 km from Keylong. It’s one of those places in India where you should try camping for a change. Frequented by tourists journeying from Manali to Ladakh, this place surely makes for a great pitstop.

Baralacha La

Nestled amid the lofty Zanskar region, Baralacha La serves as a pivotal mountain pass and confluence point of several roads. Connecting Lahaul to Ladakh, this plateau is enveloped by the Pir Panjal and Himalayan mountain ranges, offering a spectacular destination during the journey from Manali to Ladakh.

A hidden gem known primarily to those traversing the Manali – Leh route, Gata Loops captivates visitors with its stunning vistas nestled in the Western Himalayas. Accessing and departing from this location is as thrilling as the journey itself, making it a must-visit destination during the Manali to Ladakh journey.
