Northern Lights Promise

Experience the magic of the Northern Lights with our unique promise to you.

Northern Lights Promise

Tick the Northern Lights off your bucket list.

What is the Northern Lights Promise? We have been sailing along the Norwegian Coastline for over 130 years witnessing the awe-inspiring lights of the Aurora Borealis and now we want to share that with you. Our promise to you is if there is no recorded sighting of Northern Lights during your expedition, we will give you a free 6 or 7 day Classic Voyage the year after.

Why we can make this promise? Where we sail on the Norwegian coast is directly beneath the Auroral Zone, an area of consistent and heightened Northern Lights activity. Our ships act as floating, mobile observatories that move between areas where there is a lot of cloud cover to places where it’s clear skies and perfect conditions to see the aurora when it appears.

Day 3 - The Royal City of Trondheim :

Ports visited today : Kristiansund, Trondheim, Rørvik.

When visiting the old royal city of Trondheim, be sure to get a good view from the Gamle Bybrua ("Old Town Bridge"). Dating from 1861, this neo-gothic wooden bridge used to be the only way into the town centre. Nidaros Cathedral, built between 1070 and 1300, is Norway's largest Gothic religious edifice. In the neighbouring Archbishop's Palace, the Norwegian Crown Jewels are kept.

Not far from Nidaros Cathedral is Gamle Bybro, a charming wooden bridge that sits over River Nid and marks the entrance to the old Hanseatic district of Bakklandet. This neighbourhood features colourful wooden wharves that stand on stilts and host some of the city's most trendy eateries, making Bakklandet a key destination for all foodies. You then set a course for the northwest, past the beautiful Kjeungskjær lighthouse and thousands of little islands and picturesque rocky outcrops. After passing through Stokksund, the ship will arrive at Rørvik.

Available excursions :

3A Nidaros Cathedral and Ringve Museum

3B Trondheim with Nidaros Cathedral

Day 4 - Arctic Circle and Lofoten Islands :

Ports visited today : Brønnøysund, Sandnessjøen, Nesna, Ørnes, Bodø, Stamsund, Svolvær.

In the early hours of the morning, between Nesna and Ørnes, you pass a globe on a small islet which heralds your crossing of the Arctic Circle. Passengers sailing in Arctic waters for the first time are given an Arctic Circle baptism by Njord, the ruler of the Seven Seas. This comes in the form of an ice cube down your front or back, but is entirely optional.

As you call into the northern city of Bodø, gaze up at the snow-capped Børvass peaks before experiencing the fabulous street art this city has to offer. From here, you continue across the Vestfjord and towards the Lofoten archipelago which greets you with the stunning sight of the 1,000 metre-high Lofoten Wall

In the evening you reach Svolvær, the main settlement on the Lofoten Islands. These islands are renowned for their small, picturesque fishing villages with their bohemian atmosphere surrounded by majestic granite cliffs and white sandy beaches. Complete your visit with a stroll between the stockfish racks and 'rorbuer', the traditional, red fishermen's residences. The Lofoten Islands are a truly extraordinary experience.

Day 6 - Honningsvåg and the North Cape :

Ports visited today : Øksfjord, Hammerfest, Havøysund, Honningsvåg, Kjøllefjord, Mehamn, Berlevåg.

Following the scenic sailing through Magerøysund and after an early stop in Hammerfest, you arrive in Honningsvåg. This small port is the gateway to the wonders of the spectacular North Cape which rises 300m from the ocean, and at 71° 10' 21" north it puts you a mere 2,000 kilometres from the Geographical North Pole. Standing atop the North Cape Plateau you'll get the eerie feeling of being at the end of the world.

From Honningsvåg, look out for the striking rock formation called Finnkirka near the entrance to Kjøllefjord village. The building-like pillars were once an ancient sacrificial site for the indigenous nomadic Sámi people who still inhabit and herd reindeer in the region today.

The area is also known for its bird life, and Gjesværstappan, a bird sanctuary with up to 250,000 seabirds is home to some High Arctic species that can only be observed here on the Norwegian mainland. This evening, as you approach Kjøllefjord, you pass a rock formation that is sacred to the indigenous Sami people, Finnkjerka.

Day 7 - Kirkenes, The Voyage Turning Point :

Ports visited today : Båtsfjord, Vardø, Vadsø, Kirkenes.

The last port on the Hurtigruten Voyage North is Kirkenes. And at longitude 30 east, you are actually further east than Istanbul and St. Petersburg. The well-policed Russian border and the Kola peninsula are close by which explains why the road signs are written in both Norwegian and Russian.

Being at the north-easterly terminus of Hurtigruten, the only choice from here is to set south again but spending a few days in Kirkenes offers you the opportunity to take part in some of the adventurous Arctic activities available nearby.

Day 8 - hammerfest and tromsø :.

Ports visited today : Mehamn, Kjøllefjord, Honningsvåg, Havøysund, Hammerfest, Øksfjord, Skjervøy, Tromsø.

Breakfast at the North Cape forms part of an early morning excursion (at extra cost). Your next stop, Hammerfest, was a settlement back to the Stone Age and is still playing an important role as a fishing port. Founded in 1789 to develop trade with Russia, Hammerfest reconfirmed its position as Norway's Polar capital of its time, acting as a base for hunting expeditions to the High Arctic. In Hammerfest the Meridian Column, erected in 1854, commemorates the first precise measurement of the globe, an achievement so important that it's become a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

As we sail, keep your eyes open for the Northern Lights, but you might also spot pods of Orcas and Humpback Whales migrating to these waters to feed on herring.

As early as 1891, wave energy provided power to the first electric street lighting in Northern Europe, and energy innovation is still a signature for Hammerfest with its large Liquid Gas Plant just outside town. From here, your next major stop will be Tromsø where you are invited to take part in a very special musical experience, The Arctic Cathedral Midnight Concert. Or why not head to one of the town's many friendly pubs and sample the local brew, Mack's Arctic Beer.

8A Breakfast at the North Cape

8B The Northernmost Town in the World, Hammerfest

8C Midnight Concert in the Arctic Cathedral

8F Snowmobile Trip in the Polar Night

8H Into the Ice

Day 9 - Vesterålen and Lofoten Islands :

Ports visited today : Tromsø, Finnsnes, Harstad, Risøyhamn, Sortland, Stokmarknes, Svolvær, Stamsund.

The Vesterålen and Lofoten Island are amongst today's highlights. Before you reach them, you pass through Risøyrenna, a channel that was specially constructed for Hurtigruten, providing the vessels an 'inside route' between Harstad and Sortland. Stokmarknes, where Hurtigruten was founded, is the location of the Hurtigruten Museum.

You continue through the narrow Raftsund, the picturesque narrow channel between the Vesterålen and Lofoten Islands, where, time and weather permitting, you'll take a detour into the spectacular Trollfjord where steep cliffs hug the ship's sides. Then it's on to Svolvær, the main settlement on the Lofoten Islands followed by Stamsund where the majestic peaks of the huge Lofoten Wall can be viewed. You leave the islands during the evening and set course for the mainland.

9A A Taste of Vesterålen

9B Lofoten Islands

9C Sea Eagle Safari

9D Lofoten by Horse

9E RIB-Adventure in Lofoten

9F Discover a Fishing Village

9G Fishing in Lofoten

9I Vesterålen and Lofoten by RIB

Day 10 - Arctic Circle, Seven Sisters :

Ports visited today : Bodø, Ørnes, Nesna, Sandnessjøen, Brønnøysund, Rørvik.

The Helgeland coast with hundreds of islets, fertile farmland and steep granite walls is worth getting up early to experience. Today will also be your last one north of the Arctic Circle as you cross it between Ørnes and Nesna. Marvel at the Seven Sisters mountain range where local legend has it that seven beautiful troll princesses, fleeing from an unwanted suitor, got caught out as the sun rose, turning them into the seven beautiful mountains you see today, and the myth about how the arrow from Hestmannen's bow formed the hole in Torghatten Mountain. The Vega Archipelago, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is close to your call in Sandnessjøen.

The islands were inscribed on this prestigious list due to the unique interaction between man and nature - over centuries the local population have protected the eider duck nests in return for the highly valuable down from the birds.

Available excursion :

10B UNESCO Islands Vega

10C Visit the Salmon

Day 11 - Trondheim and Kristiansund :

Ports visited today : Trondheim, Kristiansund, Molde, Ålesund.

Today gives you another opportunity to explore the city of Trondheim. Nidaros Cathedral, in which three Queens and seven Kings have been crowned, is Scandinavia's largest medieval building, and Norway's crown jewels are kept in the adjacent Archbishop's Residence. Some insider advice: treat yourself to a barista-brewed coffee and Nordic patisserie in one of the many cafés in the Bakklandet district before walking up to Kristiansten Fort for great views over the city.

Passing the islands of Munkholmen and Hitra you then cross the open sea to Molde, known as the 'city of roses' due to its lush Gulf Stream location.

You will notice the steep, grey, pointed peaks of the Romsdal Alps glinting in the sun. The town of Kristiansund, located on the scenic Atlantic Road, holds the rather obscure title of Norway's 'cured cod capital' because of the nature of its main export.

11A Trondheim with Nidaros Cathedral

11B The Hidden Rooms of Nidaros Cathedral

11C The Atlantic Road

11E Bergtatt - A Magnificent Marble Mine

Day 12 - Rocky Islands, Disembarkation :

Ports visited today : Ålesund, Torvik, Måløy, Florø, Bergen.

Today, your Hurtigruten voyage will come to an end when you arrive in the City of Seven Mountains, Bergen. But before that, you still have a few nautical miles of fascinating scenery ahead of you such as the picturesque Nordfjord below the enormous Jostedalsbreen glacier, Norway's longest fjord - the mighty Sognefjord and the picturesque Bergen Archipelago. Take home your memories of the world's most beautiful voyage and the many seafaring companions and friends you've made along the way.

If you don't see the northern lights from these cruises, you'll get a free trip

hurtigruten northern lights cruise 2023

Norway offers some of the world’s best views of the northern lights . In fact, two cruise operators in the region are so confident travelers will see the aurora borealis, they’ll give passengers a free cruise if they don’t.

Havila Voyages and Hurtigruten Norway both offer a Northern Lights Promise, giving passengers a second voyage if the aurora borealis doesn’t turn up.

Havila offers the deal on 12-day Bergen-Kirkenes-Bergen round-trip itineraries departing from Oct. 1-March 31, 2024. The operator said if “spectacular green light does not dance across the night sky” during the trip, they can get a free six or seven-day voyage, according to its website .

Hurtigruten’s guarantee is valid for select cruises 11 days or longer during the same dates. If the northern lights cannot be seen from the ship during the trip, passengers can take a six or seven-day Original Coastal Express Classic Voyage at no charge. The offer is also available for Hurtigruten Expeditions – soon to be renamed HX – voyages.

“Our ships act as floating, mobile observatories that move between areas where there is a lot of cloud cover to places where it’s clear skies and perfect conditions to see the aurora when it appears,” Hurtigruten said on its website .

What are the terms of Havila and Hurtigruten’s offers?

Havila passengers must activate the Northern Lights Warning System, which alerts them to the atmospheric phenomenon’s presence, to be eligible. Passengers must book the new cruise within one month of returning from the first voyage.

The offer is good for an inside cabin, but guests can upgrade for an extra cost as availability allows.

Northern lights: Graphics illustrate why the phenomenon's wonder is spreading

Hurtigruten guests have 28 days from the time they return to book a new cruise, which they can take between Oct. 1 and March 31 “during the subsequent sailing season,” according to its website . They must also make sure their alert system is activated.

The Hurtigruten offer is good for an inside cabin, as well, with the option to pay to upgrade if other room types are available.

7 of the Best Northern Lights Cruises

Set sail on these itineraries to try to spot the aurora borealis.

hurtigruten northern lights cruise 2023

If seeing the northern lights , also known as the aurora borealis, is on your travel list, you've probably already looked into the best places to see them : northern destinations like Alaska, Canada, Greenland, Iceland , and Scandinavia among them. But have you ever considered visiting those destinations by sea rather than land? Many cruise lines not only offer itineraries to those regions but also offer northern lights-specific sailings, too. Cruising is particularly appealing for northern lights seekers because the ships can access remote areas without light pollution, allowing guests to see the aurora in its full brilliance. So if you haven't yet seen the northern lights — or if you're looking to see them again — here are seven northern lights cruises to help you accomplish your goal.

Viking: In Search of the Northern Lights

RelaxFoto.de/Getty Images

Over the course of 13 days, a luxurious Viking ocean ship transports guests from London to Amsterdam , then all the way up the coast of Norway and north of the Arctic Circle, before returning back south to the Norwegian city of Bergen. (Although some sailings operate in reverse.) The Norwegian fjords themselves are a sight to behold — and if they're paired with the northern lights, that's all the better! The sailings run from January to March when daylight is limited in the Arctic Circle, making for prime aurora opportunities. Rates start from $4,999 per person in 2023, and it should be noted that Viking is an adults-only cruise line.

Aurora Expeditions: Northern Lights Explorer

Considering the cruise line is named after the atmospheric phenomenon, it should come as no surprise that it offers a northern lights itinerary. At 19 to 22 days long, depending on the departure, there is plenty of time to hope for a northern lights appearance — or two, or three, or more. The sailings start in the northern Norwegian city of Kirkenes before sailing south along the coast, heading back north to the remote archipelago of Jan Mayen (a polar bear hotspot), over to the scenic fjords of East Greenland, and around the northern half of Iceland. The longer itinerary continues with a visit to the Faroe Islands and disembarkation in Bergen, Norway. Aurora offers just one of these sailings per year in September. Rates start from $19,705.50 per person in 2023.

Hurtigruten: The Classic Roundtrip Voyage

Hurtigruten is something of an outlier in this group because it doesn't offer specific northern lights itineraries. But the routes of this coastal ferry company in Norway just happen to traverse the perfect latitudes to see the aurora. In fact, Hurtigruten is so confident you'll see the northern lights during the auroral season (Sept. 26 through March 31) that if they don't show up on a sailing of 11 days or more, the company will give you a free six- or seven-day cruise to try again. For the best odds of seeing the northern lights, we suggest the 12-day round-trip itinerary from Bergen up the coast of Norway and back. Rates start from $2,309 per person in 2023.

Quark Expeditions: Under the Northern Lights

Specializing in polar voyages, Quark Expeditions knows a thing or two about the northern lights, which is why the company offers aurora sailings each fall. These 14-day itineraries cruise from Iceland to Greenland and back from September into early October. As the majority of the voyage takes place above the Arctic Circle, the odds of seeing the northern lights are high, especially as solar activity tends to peak around the autumnal and vernal equinoxes in September and March, respectively. And if they don't show, well, you still get to explore Iceland's Westfjords and Greenland's eastern shores — and that's a worthwhile journey in itself. Rates start from $8,501 per person in 2023.

Oceanwide Expeditions: East Greenland Scoresby Sund - Aurora Borealis

If you don't have two or three weeks to take off work to go northern lights watching, consider Oceanwide Expeditions' eight-day aurora borealis sailings from Iceland to Greenland and back. The adventure begins in Akureyri, the unofficial capital of north Iceland, before heading for Greenland's breathtaking Scoresby Sund, the largest fjord system in the world. If you do have a little more time, you can opt for the 13-day Spitsbergen - Northeast Greenland - Aurora Borealis itinerary, which embarks in the Svalbard archipelago before sailing to Greenland and down to Iceland. Both take place in the late summer into early fall, as darkness returns to the skies in the Arctic. Rates for the eight-day itinerary start from $4,600 per person for the 2023 sailings.

Cunard: Norway and Northern Lights

Each fall, one or two of the ships in Cunard's legendary fleet head north for Norway, where guests are treated to scenic cruising along the coast. The 12-day itineraries depart from Southampton, England, before traveling to Alesund, Tromsø, Narvik, and Haugesund, sailing through majestic fjords along the way. Since the ships sail this itinerary from October to November, the skies will be dark enough to see the northern lights, should they decide to appear. In 2023, the voyage will be undertaken by Queen Victoria , while next season, the Queen Mary 2 and the upcoming Queen Anne will take the reins. Rates start from $1,689 per person in 2023.

P&O: Norway

The most affordable option on this list, British cruise line P&O operates 12-day sailings to Norway year-round, but during the auroral season, there's a strong chance you'll see the northern lights while onboard. Guests embark in Southampton, England, before sailing north to Norway, traveling as far north as Tromsø, well north of the Arctic Circle. We recommend splurging on a room with windows for the best northern lights viewing options. However, those in interior cabins can always run up on deck — which you should do anyway to witness the full grandeur of the atmospheric phenomenon. Rates start from $1,385 per person in 2023.

This Cruise Line Promises You’ll See The Northern Lights On Select Sailings — Or You Get A Free Cruise

hurtigruten northern lights cruise 2023

  • News and Tips
  • Travel News

The northern lights are a popular but elusive natural phenomenon that appear on many a traveler’s bucket list. If they are on your list, and you’ve been hesitant to book a northern lights tour because you might come up empty, here’s a chance to hedge your bets.

Hurtigruten is making a “Northern Lights Promise” on expeditions along the scenic Norwegian Coast during the auroral season (September 26–March 31).

The Hurtigruten Promise

The promise extends to sailings on select Hurtigruten Norway itineraries lasting 11 days or longer. Per Hurtigruten, if the northern lights don’t appear within sight of the ship during your voyage, you’ll get a free 6-day southbound or 7-day northbound cruise between Kirkenes and Bergen.

What Cruises Qualify?

Covered winter cruises include the 11-day Voyage of Discovery and the 12-day Roundtrip Voyage . Both visit 34 ports twice (out and back) and sail past more than 100 remarkable fjords and 1,000 mountains. The promise also covers two other expeditions: the new North Cape Express , exploring Norway’s coastline northward from Oslo and back down to Bergen; and the Northern Lights Expedition cruise from London.

Where And When Are The Northern Lights Most Visible?

Per Hurtigruten, “the Aurora Borealis is most commonly seen in the Polar Regions, within a radius of 2,500 kilometers (1,550 miles) around the magnetic poles. This area is known as the Auroral Zone or the Auroral Oval.

“For the Northern Lights, the further north you travel, the more likely you will catch a glimpse of the aurora. Above the Arctic Circle (66°33’N) is the best place to go aurora hunting which is why northern Norway and Svalbard are some of the best places on Earth to see the Northern Lights.”

Two Keys To Seeing The Northern Lights

First, it must be dark and cloud-free. Second, you must be under or close to one of the auroral ovals. As you sail toward the Arctic Circle , your chances of seeing the northern lights improve.

It’s not dark long enough to see the northern lights during the summer. The best chance is around the equinoxes in March and September, when the aurora is most active. The lights appear between 5 p.m. and 2 a.m.

For more information, see Hurtigruten’s free guide to the northern lights here and FAQs you’ll want to know.

The Fine Print

The northern lights guarantee is subject to terms and conditions . Here’s one: Deck officers determine whether or not there has been an “occurrence.” Then, they announce the aurora’s appearance to passengers so they can view the lights. Here’s another condition: The free cruise will be in the next sailing season. It allows for an inside cabin, but you can upgrade for a fee.

Northern Lights cruise - cruise to see Northern Lights

The ultimate guide to taking a Northern Lights cruise

Why, when and how to take a cruise to see Northern Lights displays this winter

With high demand for these special expedition cruises , it's never too early to do your research and secure a spot on a winter Northern Lights cruise in good time.

As an incredible way to see the Aurora Borealis, Northern Lights cruises are certainly a bucket list cruise . Northern Norway is where the majority of the trips go, taking you to hard-to-reach places with the clearest of skies for the best viewing opportunities.

Travelling on an expedition ship (try one from trusted Northern Lights cruise company Hurtigruten ), you'll feel like a true explorer, with onboard experts available to tell you everything you need to know about the displays as you spot them along the way.

What's more, some travel companies are so confident that you'll see the Northern Lights at sea that they offer an aurora guarantee, which means that if you don't witness them during your trip, you'll receive another cruise for free. The Northern Lights promise aside, your best chance is to choose a cruise of ten to 14 nights to increase your chances.

Good Housekeeping has an exclusive 14-night cruise around northern Norway this November and December. As well as exploring the most beautiful parts of the region (Tromso, Alta and Lofoten) and chasing the Northern Lights with Hurtigruten experts, you'll have the promise of another free seven-day cruise if you don't get to see the lights.

FIND OUT MORE

To inspire you to try something different this winter and opt for a Northern Lights cruise, here's everything you need to know about the special winter sailings in our ultimate guide, including some questions answered by resident lecturer Dr John Mason at Hurtigruten.

What can you expect on your first Northern Lights cruise?

"On a Northern Lights voyage, apart from the chance of seeing the Northern Lights (to which I am now somewhat addicted), the coastal scenery is fabulous and ever-changing, the ships are very comfortable, the crews are incredibly professional, friendly and helpful - and the food is superb," explains Dr Mason.

"It is true that the Norwegian coastal weather is unpredictable, it can change very quickly – on occasions in a matter of minutes. I have seen a fierce snowstorm up on deck give way to a beautifully clear, star-studded sky with Northern Lights visible, and all in the space of just 20 minutes.

"Under normal conditions, the auroral oval lies to the north of Tromso, so the section of the voyage from Tromsø to Alta will generally be the best location for seeing the Lights, but I have seen them as far south as Bergen and quite often within the Arctic Circle."

Why is a cruise the best way to see the Northern Lights?

A Northern Lights cruise not only takes you to corners that you don't have access to on land, but the lengthier stay on board a ship heightens your chances of seeing the natural phenomenon.

Northern Lights cruise

Dr Mason says: "Statistics collected in 2015 showed that if a guest stays just one night in the Arctic they have only a 14 per cent chance of seeing the Northern Lights, whereas if they stay for five nights their chances increase to about 90 per cent. But you must be ready to get up whenever the sky is clear – even if that is at three o’clock in the morning.

"On Hurtigruten’s voyages, you will be notified when the Northern Lights are visible at any point over the tannoy so you are guaranteed not to miss them."

When is the best time to take a Northern Lights cruise?

In the Arctic, the Northern Lights season runs from the last week in September to the first week in April, Dr Mason explains.

"During the late spring and summer months there is continuous daylight, which is why they are not visible.

Northern Lights cruise

"During the autumn and winter, you are very likely to see the Northern Lights whenever the sky is clear and dark, and they may often be glimpsed through thin or broken cloud on land."

Optimal conditions are usually when the weather is cold and dry during the autumn and winter months. Good Housekeeping has departures for its Northern Lights cruise between late September and mid-December, the perfect time of year to give you the best chance of a spectacular show.

How do the displays look from a cruise ship?

"Often, as night falls and the sky is clear and dark, one’s first view of the aurora is nothing more than a faint arc of light, usually to the north, which appears greyish to the naked eye, simply because our eyes are not good at seeing colour in low light levels," says Dr Mason.

"As the aurora brightens the first hints of colour, usually pale green, may be discerned. Then, if the display becomes more active, bright spots may be seen moving along the arc and rays may be seen shooting upwards into the sky. If the arc ripples and distorts, or if multiple arcs appear, the excitement mounts and there is the expectation of a fine show.

"The most active parts of an auroral display may last only a few minutes, so one must keep alert. In the grandest outbursts, the aurora may become all-sky, a breathtaking, rapidly moving kaleidoscope of colour, perhaps coming together in a magnificent ‘corona’ (when the stream of charged particles flow exactly in your direction) almost overhead.

"On a Northern Lights cruise , the kaleidoscope of colour circulates overhead, bringing an incredibly immersive experience on board."

What else can you experience on a Northern Lights cruise ship?

The ships used to take you to the Northern Lights are so much more than floating hotels and offer the utmost comfort and unique features. Hurtigruten's MS Nordlys, for instance, has a modern, Arctic-inspired design, with a few luxuries on board.

You can expect a bakery and ice cream bar serving up Scandi specialities such as smørbrød (open sandwiches) and ice creams in usual flavours (stockfish and brown cheese). The Panorama Bar at the front of the ship is also a great spot to have a hot drink as you soak up the views.

On Good Housekeeping's 14-night cruise to Norway , you will be based on the premium expedition ship, MS Maud. This ship has several features which make it exceptionally well-suited to Northern Lights voyages, including an outdoor Observation Deck and an advanced science centre.

When you're not searching for the Northern Lights, there is also a sauna, outdoor hot tubs on the deck, multiple restaurants to try, and a well-equipped gym.

One of the best things you'll find on board is the Expedition Team. Serving as a university at sea, this team of experts offer lectures, presentations and activities for you to take part in during the Northern Lights cruise to ensure it is an educational as well as a magical experience.

You may learn about the local wildlife, cultures and even other phenomena in the surrounding areas where you're sailing. The team will also introduce to the Nordic concept of friluftsliv , the notion of getting outdoors, and will encourage you to take part in hikes and outdoor activities throughout the trip.

Can you see the Northern Lights on a fjords cruise?

As spectacular as the Northern Lights are, they’re far from the only reason people travel to Norway. The exceptional fjords - narrow inlets of water formed when ancient glaciers retreated - are another of the country’s main attractions.

Good Housekeeeping's 14-night expedition cruise to Norway will take you into Nordfjord, where you’ll pass by Hornelen, Europe's highest sea cliff, and see old fishing communities dating back to pre-Viking times perched on the banks of narrow inlets.

northern lights cruise

A trip to Norway's fjords is an unforgettable experience, where you’ll see some of Europe’s most dramatic natural landscapes. So, can you combine a trip to these outstanding natural landmarks with seeing the Northern Lights?

Most of Norway’s best-known fjords, like the Njordford, the Sognefjord, and the UNESCO-listed Geirangerfjord, are located on the west coast of this long, thin country. As these fjords lie outside of the country’s 'aurora zone', there’s not much chance of seeing the Northern Lights here.

Essentially, the further north you go, the better your chances. One of Norway’s most famous Northern fjords, the narrow and mysterious Trollfjord, is north of the arctic circle, so a visit here, especially between September and March, means near-guaranteed sightings of the ethereal green lights.

northern lights cruise

Fortunately, on Good Housekeeping's Northern Lights cruise, you don’t have to choose between visiting the western fjords and the north of the country. The cruise to Norway takes you to the famous Nordfjord on the west coast, and also all the way up to Alta, dubbed the 'Northern Lights City’, one of northernmost towns in the world and famed for its consistent Northern Lights activity.

Which cruise line is best for seeing the Northern Lights?

There are several cruise lines with regular sailings to Norway to see the aurora. It’s worth doing your research to make sure you’re travelling with a company who are experts in all things Norway, like Viking , P&O Cruises or Hurtigruten .

Viking, as you could probably guess from the name, has a strong Scandinavian focus, and offers several carefully curated Norwegian cruises, including a 13-day itinerary which will take you far north during winter, with two days spent in Alta.

Hurtigruten has been sailing in Norway for almost 130 years and offer several itineraries dedicated to chasing the Aurora Borealis.

You’ll be accompanied by experts, and the Northern Lights cruises depart in winter, when the short days, long nights, and reduced light pollution provide the best conditions for witnessing the Northern Lights from the observation deck of the expedition vessel.

CRUISE NORWAY WITH GH AND HURTIGRUTEN

And with the company's Northern Lights Promise, if there is no recorded sighting during your expedition, you’ll get a free six or seven-day Classic Voyage the following year.

northern lights cruise

Australian company Aurora Expeditions also offers memorable expeditions to Norway. It has a 22-day Norwegian Northern Lights cruise, which takes you from Kirkenes in the north to Bergen in the south, with stops in Greenland, Iceland, and the Faroe Islands.

What should you pack for a Northern Lights cruise?

One of our favourite Norwegian phrases is, 'there's no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing,' and this couldn't be more true when it comes to a Northern Lights cruise. You'll want to ensure you're protected from the elements and packing layers is key, with wool or silk base layers and two or three layers of fleeces or wools on top, and don't forget the thermals for your legs, too.

For your outer layers, a windproof jacket is essential, as are insulated trousers used for ski or other cold weather trips. If you're heading out on icy excursions, like snowmobiling the travel company should have a once-piece snowsuit for you to wear.

Two pairs of gloves (a thin pair and mittens to wear on top), durable snow boots or winter hiking boots, wool socks (not cotton), a wool or fleece hat, swimwear for the hot tub, plenty of lip balm and moisturiser to prevent dry skin are some of the essentials to pack for a Northern Lights cruise.

Want to experience a once-in-a-lifetime Northern Lights cruise ? Good Housekeeping has partnered with Hurtigruten to bring you a unique cruise to Norway this winter. You will spend 14 nights discovering the magic of Norway’s fjords, villages, and coastal cities.

A real highlight of the trip is five nights above the Arctic Circle. You'll sail into the 'Northern Lights City' of Alta where you'll be directly beneath the auroral oval. As long as the conditions are right, you'll be in for the show of a lifetime.

Stunning Arctic scenery

From Amsterdam, you’ll sail to the Norwegian coast and explore the dramatic and enchanting fjords. Marvel at the breathtaking mountains and glaciers which serve as the perfect backdrop along your roundtrip to the northernmost point of mainland Europe.

Coastal community charm

From cosy fishing villages such as Kalvåg and the epic island grandeur of Senja to the historic city of Bergen and the delightful capital of the Arctic, Tromsø, you’ll experience fascinating insights into the history and culture of the communities that call this remarkable place home.

Setting off from Amsterdam

Embarking on your adventure

Your winter expedition cruise begins in Amsterdam. Before boarding MS Maud, take some time to enjoy a stroll beside Amsterdam's famous canals and across the old bridges between the rivers Amstel and Ij, or admire the charming townhouses that line the canals of the Grachtengordel, now protected by UNESCO.

Once on board the ship, you’ll pick up your complimentary expedition jacket, locate your cabin, explore the ship and attend a mandatory safety drill.  After leaving port, the captain will welcome you aboard and your adventure can truly begin.

Before heading for the North Sea, we’ll have a short stop in Den Helder, a strategically located and historic town where Napoleon constructed the naval dockyards, Willemsoord.

Norway bound

Easing into the journey

This day at sea will give you plenty of time to find your sea legs and enjoy the onboard facilities, such as our hot tubs, sauna and gym. You'll also dine on delicious seasonal produce in our restaurants.

The Expedition Team will begin the first in their series of lectures over at the Science Center. Each member of the Expedition Team is an expert in their field. They’ll share fascinating insights about the places, history and nature you may encounter on your Norwegian coast adventure.

Find out about our Citizen Science projects, where you can contribute to important scientific research. Or pick up pointers on improving your wildlife and landscape images from our expedition photographers.

Old and new

Explore lively Stavanger

Today, we’ll explore the picturesque city of Stavanger – Norway’s fourth largest city.

With an international ambience and a lively cultural scene, Stavanger is a cosmopolitan city set in stunning surroundings. Discover the architectural relics of Old Stavanger, including a magnificent 12th century cathedral. You can also visit the Norwegian Petroleum Museum, pop into a local boutique or simply enjoy a beer on the waterfront.

Looking towards the harbour is the statue of the former mayor and well-known author Alexander Kielland. The pedestrian street leads you to the Valberg Tower, situated on a small hill and overlooking the central part of the city and harbour.

A town withstanding the elements

Visit one of the Norway's best preserved fishing villages

We’ll dock at the little fishing village of Kalvåg after breakfast, situated far out on the coastline with the open North Sea to the west. Its name literally means ‘Frozen Bay’ in the Old Norse.

If conditions allow, we’ll go ashore here and discover one of the best kept secrets of the Norwegian coast. Admire and walk around Kalvåg’s collection of old waterfront buildings, from restored wooden wharfs to herring salting warehouses.

Cosy-looking houses cluster together around the bay, the reflections of their lights shimmering like candles in the waters below. The wonderful wintery atmosphere is even more captivating when the village is coated with a snug blanket of snow.

Scenic nature and mythical mountains

Approaching the Arctic Circle

Today you can spend time in the ship’s lounge, soaking in a hot tub, or out on deck. Whatever you do, don’t take your eyes off the scenery as we sail through Helgeland County, with its pointed mountains and abundant islands.

Pick out the peaks of the Seven Sisters Mountain range, thought to be the petrified bodies of seven troll sisters caught out at sunrise. And spot the Torghatten mountain with its distinct hole through the middle. Local legend states that the mountain was in fact the troll-king’s hat which turned to stone when it was pierced by an arrow.

The Expedition Team will continue their onboard lectures, covering everything from local folklore and wildlife to the history of navigation along the coast.

Idyllic island life

Visit one of the world's most spectacular destinations

Svolvær is the largest town in Lofoten with about 4,800 residents, many of whom work as fishermen. There are shops and art galleries to browse along the seafront promenade and rows of rorbuer to admire.

You might spot wooden racks called hjell dotted around the shores of the town too. Locally caught cod is dried on these racks and later turned into tørrfisk, or stockfish in English, and prized as a local delicacy. Fishing is clearly an important way of life in Lofoten and the lectures for the day may focus on how cod effectively helped to build Norway into a country.

Gateway to the Arctic

Encounter the fascinating history and culture of the gateway to the Arctic

It’s time to explore Tromsø, the capital of the Arctic. We’ll reach the city of Tromsø before noon and spend the rest of the afternoon exploring its fascinating history, culture and bold architecture.

Historically, Tromsø was a frontier town for returning hunters and explorers and acted as a launch point for several Arctic expeditions. Compared to the barren tundra they experienced, Tromsø was like Paris because of the fashion and food they found there. Hence the nickname, ‘Paris of the North’.

The Arctic Cathedral is one of the most striking landmarks in Tromsø, especially when lit up at night. It features an attractive, huge stained-glass window that is well worth seeing up close.

To the top of the world

Experience the spectacular North Cape and the best seafood in Europe

In the morning we’ll arrive at Honningsvåg and visit one of the northernmost points in Europe - the North Cape. At 71°10’21´N, it’s just 2,100 kilometres away from the Geographic North Pole, with only the Svalbard archipelago in between.

Stand at the cliff’s edge and gaze out across the sparkling sea. There’s the obligatory selfie at the Globe Monument to snap before visiting the North Cape Hall for several exhibits and a short film that chronicles the history of the cape.

Back in Honningsvåg, enjoy a stroll by the pretty harbour, browsing the charming shops, houses and church. The local restaurants offer fresh fish and seafood, with king crabs available all year round. This is the ship’s turning point and from here, we start our return trip southbound.

Get a real taste of Senja

Spend a day exploring ‘Norway in miniature’

Today, we dock at Senja, one of the most ruggedly beautiful and lesser-visited islands in Norway.

Sometimes referred to as ‘Norway in miniature’, the island boasts diverse landscapes and weather that seem to change in the blink of an eye. The wild Atlantic side boasts towering, rocky mountains that plunge into the sea, while the tranquil southern side is home to lush, green farmland.

While you’re here, explore the striking landscape on a guided hike, or kayak around the crystal-clear waters that reflect the mountains like glass. Top your visit off with a tasting experience and sample delicious local produce.

  • Included Tasting Senja

Cruising the inner coastline

Dabble in science or simply relax and watch the world go by

Enjoying the moment and taking time to reconnect with nature and the world around you is part of being on an expedition cruise. So, during a day at sea, relax on a sofa in the panoramic Explorer Lounge & Bar and reflect on your experience so far. Or why not soak in a hot tub out on deck, or simply sit back and take in the serenity of the Norwegian coast.

There’s more to learn in lectures from the Expedition Team, and you can dabble in science in the onboard Science Center. You can also participate in Citizen Science projects and contribute to important global research.

Off the beaten track

Adventure among Norway’s little-known islands

There’s no set plan for today – so expect the unexpected! In true expedition style, we’ll spend the time heading off the beaten track and making the most of the conditions. Your Expedition Team will draw on their in-depth knowledge of the area to bring you to the most exhilarating activities in naturally beautiful locations.

There are many islands and fjords to discover in this region, and we’ll be sailing in to get a closer look at some of them. Our expedition boats will take us ashore where we’ll be on the lookout for the local wildlife in these stunning surroundings.

A day deep in the fjord

Learn all about glaciers and how they shaped the Norwegian landscape

In the morning, we plan to cruise deep into Sognefjorden, the longest and deepest fjord in Norway, to the tiny hamlet of Fjærland. Only 300 people live in this idyllic village with its many charming old buildings and picturesque second-hand book shops. This is also the place where Sognefjorden meets Jostedalsbreen, the largest glacier on the European continent.

A visit to the Norwegian Glacier Museum is the included activity of the day. There you can learn why glacier ice is blue and how the fjords were formed. You can even perform a few experiments with 1,000-year-old glacier ice and watch a panoramic film about Europe’s largest glacier.

  • Included Fjærland - Understanding Norway’s Glaciers (Included)

City of Seven Mountains

Experience stunning mountain views, and explore the charming city of Bergen

Bergen, one of Norway’s most beautiful cities, was Norway’s capital for many years. Your included activity is an excursion to Mount Fløyen. From the ship, we’ll hop on buses and drive to the Fløibanen funicular. At the summit, 1,049 ft high, bask in stunning views over the city surrounded by seven mountains and the sea.

Back in Bergen, you can explore the cobblestone streets and alleyways of this thriving, compact city. Also, be sure to stroll through the historic Bryggen district with its colourful wooden wharfs. The area dates back to the 18th century and now houses boutique stores selling a range of Norwegian arts and crafts.

Relax and unwind

Take the time to relax with friends and look back on your adventures

On the return journey, you can spend time chatting with new friends, perhaps recalling the best moments of your expedition together. Enjoy drinks in the Explorer Lounge & Bar while swapping friendly banter and stories of past adventures. You might even catch a couple of the crew and Expedition Team members here too.

Make the most of your day on board MS Maud. You may want to soak in a hot tub, work out in the gym, relax in the Explorer Lounge, or edit the photographs from your trip. Don’t miss the Expedition Team as they review the highlights of your memorable expedition cruise along the beautiful coast of Norway.

Amsterdam's Dutch masters

A creative, cosmopolitan city known for the arts

Your winter expedition cruise to Norway comes to an end back in Amsterdam. After a final breakfast, it’ll be time to say a fond farewell to the ship, the crew and any new-found friends you’ve made. As you head ashore, you’ll take with you special memories of Norway in winter - spectacular scenery, majestic fjords, fascinating towns and cities, and welcoming people.

As you might remember from the start to this voyage Amsterdam is a wonderful city for a walking tour. Stroll along its cobbled streets, admiring the canals and architecture. Enjoy a canal trip, visit the Anne Frank House or relax in quirky cafés.

Whatever’s next for you, we wish you a safe onward journey and look forward to seeing you on your next adventure!

Moscow Sky Lights Up With Strange Glow After Explosion at Electrical Substation: Reports

N ew footage has emerged showing bright flashes lighting up the night sky in southern Moscow during the early morning hours of November 22.

Knewz.com has learned that there was an explosion at an electrical substation on the outskirts of Russia's capital city followed by an alleged power outage in "several" homes.

Video snippets, shared on Russian news channels like ASTRA , captured a series of flashes that caused the sky to change color. Smoke could also be seen rising from a building.

Corroborating the video, several Russian Telegram accounts reported an explosion near the south of Moscow and a subsequent fire at the Lyublino electrical substation, southeast of central Moscow, per Newsweek .

The local authorities from the area have since confirmed that an explosion occurred in the village of Molokovo, but they reassured the public that all vital facilities were operating as normal.

Russian outlet MSK1.ru reported the blaze at the substation and noted “several” power outages.

The town of Lytkarino, located to the southeast of Moscow, was one of the affected areas, as reported by the independent outlet, Meduza .

Additional power failures were reported in the southern Domodedovo section of the city. However, electricity was later restored to these areas.

One local resident speculated that a drone may have been responsible for the explosion, but additional sources are yet to support this theory.

Newsweek reported that messages on the ASTRA Telegram account run by independent Russian journalists showed residents near the substation panicking. One concerned Russian called it a "nightmare."

The incident follows an attack by Russia on a power station in southwestern Ukraine that left 2,000 people without electricity .

Knewz.com reported previously:

“ Russian forces launched a total of 38 Iranian-made Shahed-136/131 drones during the later hours of November 17 and 18.

The Ukrainian Air Force Command reported that 29 of these drones were shot down [...].

One civilian was injured as a result of the attack that targeted energy infrastructure in the southwestern Odesa Oblast.”

The assault came after repeated warnings by Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky that Russia would try to cripple its power grid as winter approaches.

Ukraine's leader warned that if Russia resorted to attacking its power utilities, it would respond in kind.

Ukraine has conducted numerous long-range aerial drone strikes on Moscow since May 2023.

Most recently on November 20, it was reported that one such incursion was intercepted close to the city, per Kyiv Post .

Moscow’s Mayor Sergei Sobyanin confirmed this and elaborated that the region's air defense systems intercepted the unmanned craft over the city of Elektrostal to the east of Moscow, as well as another over the Bogorodsky district, northeast of central Moscow.

The details of the recently surfaced video footage have yet to be independently verified.

First refuelling for Russia’s Akademik Lomonosov floating NPP

!{Model.Description}

hurtigruten northern lights cruise 2023

The FNPP includes two KLT-40S reactor units. In such reactors, nuclear fuel is not replaced in the same way as in standard NPPs – partial replacement of fuel once every 12-18 months. Instead, once every few years the entire reactor core is replaced with and a full load of fresh fuel.

The KLT-40S reactor cores have a number of advantages compared with standard NPPs. For the first time, a cassette core was used, which made it possible to increase the fuel cycle to 3-3.5 years before refuelling, and also reduce by one and a half times the fuel component in the cost of the electricity produced. The operating experience of the FNPP provided the basis for the design of the new series of nuclear icebreaker reactors (series 22220). Currently, three such icebreakers have been launched.

The Akademik Lomonosov was connected to the power grid in December 2019, and put into commercial operation in May 2020.

Electricity generation from the FNPP at the end of 2023 amounted to 194 GWh. The population of Pevek is just over 4,000 people. However, the plant can potentially provide electricity to a city with a population of up to 100,000. The FNPP solved two problems. Firstly, it replaced the retiring capacities of the Bilibino Nuclear Power Plant, which has been operating since 1974, as well as the Chaunskaya Thermal Power Plant, which is more than 70 years old. It also supplies power to the main mining enterprises located in western Chukotka. In September, a 490 km 110 kilovolt power transmission line was put into operation connecting Pevek and Bilibino.

For the first time Rosatom Fuel Division supplied fresh nuclear fuel to the world’s only floating nuclear cogeneration plant in the Arctic

The fuel was supplied to the northernmost town of Russia along the Northern Sea Route.

The first in the history of the power plant refueling, that is, the replacement of spent nuclear fuel with fresh one, is planned to begin before 2024. The manufacturer of nuclear fuel for all Russian nuclear icebreakers, as well as the Akademik Lomonosov FNPP, is Machinery Manufacturing Plant, Joint-Stock Company (MSZ JSC), a company of Rosatom Fuel Company TVEL that is based in Elektrostal, Moscow Region.

The FNPP includes two KLT-40S reactors of the icebreaking type. Unlike convenient ground-based large reactors (that require partial replacement of fuel rods once every 12-18 months), in the case of these reactors, the refueling takes place once every few years and includes unloading of the entire reactor core and loading of fresh fuel into the reactor.

The cores of KLT-40 reactors of the Akademik Lomonosov floating power unit have a number of advantages compared to the reference ones: a cassette core was used for the first time in the history of the unit, which made it possible to increase the fuel energy resource to 3-3.5 years between refuelings, and also reduce the fuel component of the electricity cost by one and a half times. The FNPP operating experience formed the basis for the designs of reactors for nuclear icebreakers of the newest series 22220. Three such icebreakers have been launched by now.

For the first time the power units of the Akademik Lomonosov floating nuclear power plant were connected to the grid in December 2019, and put into commercial operation in May 2020. The supply of nuclear fuel from Elektrostal to Pevek and its loading into the second reactor is planned for 2024. The total power of the Akademik Lomonosov FNPP, supplied to the coastal grid of Pevek without thermal energy consumption on shore, is about 76 MW, being about 44 MW in the maximum thermal power supply mode. The FNPP generated 194 million kWh according to the results of 2023. The population of Pevek is just a little more than 4 thousand, while the FNPP has a potential for supplying electricity to a city with a population of up to 100 thousand people. After the FNPP commissioning two goals were achieved. These include first of all the replacement of the retiring capacities of the Bilibino NPP, which has been operating since 1974, as well as the Chaunskaya TPP, which has already been operating for more than 70 years. Secondly, energy is supplied to the main mining companies in western Chukotka in the Chaun-Bilibino energy hub a large ore and metal cluster, including gold mining companies and projects related to the development of the Baimsk ore zone. In September 2023, a 110 kilovolt power transmission line with a length of 490 kilometers was put into operation, connecting the towns of Pevek and Bilibino. The line increased the reliability of energy supply from the FNPP to both Bilibino consumers and mining companies, the largest of which is the Baimsky GOK. The comprehensive development of the Russian Arctic is a national strategic priority. To increase the NSR traffic is of paramount importance for accomplishment of the tasks set in the field of cargo shipping. This logistics corridor is being developed due regular freight voyages, construction of new nuclear-powered icebreakers and modernization of the relevant infrastructure. Rosatom companies are actively involved in this work. Rosatom Fuel Company TVEL (Rosatom Fuel Division) includes companies fabricating nuclear fuel, converting and enriching uranium, manufacturing gas centrifuges, conducting researches and producing designs. As the only nuclear fuel supplier to Russian NPPs, TVEL supplies fuel for a total of 75 power reactors in 15 countries, for research reactors in nine countries, as well as for propulsion reactors of the Russian nuclear fleet. Every sixth power reactor in the world runs on TVEL fuel. Rosatom Fuel Division is the world’s largest producer of enriched uranium and the leader on the global stable isotope market. The Fuel Division is actively developing new businesses in chemistry, metallurgy, energy storage technologies, 3D printing, digital products, and decommissioning of nuclear facilities. TVEL also includes Rosatom integrators for additive technologies and electricity storage systems. Rosenergoatom, Joint-Stock Company is part of Rosatom Electric Power Division and one of the largest companies in the industry acting as an operator of nuclear power plants. It includes, as its branches, 11 operating NPPs, including the FNPP, the Scientific and Technical Center for Emergency Operations at NPPs, Design and Engineering as well as Technological companies. In total, 37 power units with a total installed capacity of over 29.5 GW are in operation at 11 nuclear power plants in Russia. Machinery Manufacturing Plant, Joint-Stock Company (MSZ JSC, Elektrostal) is one of the world’s largest manufacturers of fuel for nuclear power plants. The company produces fuel assemblies for VVER-440, VVER-1000, RBMK-1000, BN-600,800, VK-50, EGP-6; powders and fuel pellets intended for supply to foreign customers. It also produces nuclear fuel for research reactors. The plant belongs to the TVEL Fuel Company of Rosatom.
