Entry, Exit and Visa Requirements

Tourist visas:  When traveling on a U.S. tourist passport, travelers may obtain a free visa upon arrival, if they have six-months validity in their passport and a return or onward ticket. The visa is valid for 30 days from the date of issuance and entitles the holder to spend up to 30 days in Qatar, or multiple entries during the 30-day validity. It may be extended for a further 30 days. See the Government of Qatar’s website for  visa information .

Former Residency Permit Holders:  Former resident permit holders seeking to return to Qatar should carry a “no objection letter” issued by their former sponsor.

For further information on residence permits, see the  Qatari government  or  U.S. Embassy website .

Exit Permits:

  • Exit permits are no longer required for U.S. citizens working in Qatar, with the exception of employees deemed “essential” by their employers, who must still be granted an exit permit.
  • If you owe money, you will be barred from exiting Qatar. Qatari banks place holds on accounts to ensure all debts are paid before you leave.
  • U.S. citizens with family residence visas do not need an exit permit. However, a family member who sponsors their dependents (usually the person employed in Qatar) can elect to receive instant notification if dependents attempt to depart the country.

Qatar does not recognize dual nationality.  If you hold Qatari citizenship, Qatari law requires that you enter and exit on your Qatari passport. Qatari authorities may confiscate your U.S. passport if you hold Qatari/U.S. dual nationality. Should this happen, contact the U.S. Embassy. The seizure does not constitute loss of U.S. citizenship.

Military Personnel  should consult the Department of Defense Foreign Clearance Guide before traveling, since different entry/exit requirements may apply. For further information, call the Host Nation Coordination Cell of the 379 th  Air Expeditionary Wing at 011-974-5551-0815.

Some restrictions  exist for foreign residents of Qatar who test positive for certain communicable diseases, including HIV/AIDs. Medical exams are required for individuals seeking residency in Qatar, but not for transit passengers or short-term visitors.  Qatari authorities will not bar HIV-positive temporary visitors from entry to Qatar based on their health status.  However, Qatar denies residency and employment to HIV or tuberculosis-positive applicants (among other communicable diseases).  Short-term visitors to Qatar with medications on their person are advised to carry a copy of their prescriptions. Please verify this information with the  Embassy of Qatar  before you travel.

Customs  regulations prohibit the import of alcohol over the duty-free cap, narcotics, pork products, weapons or weapons-related articles (hand cuffs, laser pointers, etc.), drones, professional photography equipment to include telescopic lenses, as well as pornographic or sexually-related materials.

See Qatar’s  website  for specific information regarding customs requirements.

Find information on  dual nationality ,  prevention of international child abduction  and  customs regulations  on our websites.

Safety and Security

Terrorism:  Terrorist groups and those inspired by such organizations are intent on attacking U.S. citizens abroad.  Terrorists are increasingly using less sophisticated methods of attack – including knives, firearms, and vehicles – to target crowds more effectively target crowds.  Frequently, their aim is unprotected or vulnerable targets, such as:

  • High-profile public events (sporting contests, political rallies, demonstrations, holiday events, celebratory gatherings, etc.)
  • Hotels, clubs, and restaurants frequented by tourists
  • Places of worship
  • Schools
  • Parks
  • Shopping malls and markets
  • Public transportation systems (including subways, buses, trains, and scheduled commercial flights)

For more information, see our Terrorism page.

  • Practice personal security measures at all times.
  • Keep a low profile.
  • Be aware of your surroundings and local events.
  • Stay alert in locations frequented by Westerners.
  • Monitor local media broadcasts and consular messages.
  • Vary travel routes and times when possible.
  • Be extra vigilant when frequenting banks or ATMs.

Areas to Avoid:

  • Large crowds and demonstrations in case of unrest
  • Labor or work camps located outside of cities and major industrial areas.  These areas are highly congested with limited physical and hygiene standards.

Crime : The crime rate in Qatar is generally low. Incidents of violence and petty theft are rare but do occur.  There is a large police presence throughout the country.

International Financial Scams: See the  Department of State  and the  FBI  webpages for information on scams.

Victims of Crime : Report crimes to the local police at 999 and contact the U.S. Embassy at + (974) 4496-6000.  Remember that local authorities are responsible for investigating and prosecuting crime.

Victims of Sexual Assault:  Sexual relations outside of marriage are illegal in Qatar and subject to criminal prosecution. Instances can result in arrest, fines, imprisonment, and deportation.  If a U.S. citizen is a victim of sexual assault in Qatar, we strongly encourage you to contact the U.S. Embassy immediately, prior to contacting the local authorities.

Domestic Violence:  U.S. citizen victims of domestic violence are strongly urged to contact the Embassy immediately at + (974) 4496-6000 for assistance. Victims may also seek medical care through Hamad Hospital emergency room at 16060 or +(974) 4439-5777 if you are calling from overseas.

Information on local resources and assistance can be found on the Protection and Social Rehabilitation Centre website and through their hotline: 6693-3999, 6693-3108, or 6693-3919.

Tourism : The tourism industry is unevenly regulated, and safety inspections for equipment and facilities do not commonly occur. Hazardous areas/activities are not always identified with appropriate signage, and staff may not be trained or certified either by the host government or by recognized authorities in the field. In the event of an injury, appropriate medical treatment is typically available only in/near major cities. First responders are generally unable to access areas outside of major cities and to provide urgent medical treatment. U.S. citizens are encouraged to purchase medical evacuation insurance .

Local Laws & Special Circumstances

Exit bans prevent those faced with legal proceedings from leaving Qatar until their case is abandoned or resolved.  This can take months or years. The Government of Qatar does not offer any social support for individuals under exit bans.

Reasons for exit bans can include:

  • Labor or financial disputes
  • Personal debt (including bounced checks, credit card debt, and bank loans)
  • Outstanding contracts or leases
  • Traffic fines
  • Pending legal matters, including cases related to gestures or behavior reported by Qataris that are viewed as “offensive.”

U.S. citizens have been subjected to exit bans and/or placed in prison pending payment of debts.

Always carry a copy of your passport for proof of identity, or authorities may detain you for questioning.

Criminal Penalties:  You are subject to local laws. If you violate local laws, even unknowingly, you may be arrested, deported, or imprisoned.  Individuals establishing a business or practicing a profession that requires additional permits or licensing should seek information from the competent local authorities, prior to practicing or operating a business.

Furthermore, some laws are also prosecutable in the U.S., regardless of local law. For examples, see our website on  crimes against minors abroad  and the  Department of Justice  website.

Criminal penalties for certain offenses are much harsher than those in the U.S.:

  • Incidents involving obscene language, gestures, or insulting comments often result in arrest, imprisonment, and/or fines.
  • Alcohol-Related Offenses, including public intoxication, can result in severe penalties such as arrest, heavy fines, imprisonment, and/or deportation.  Qatar maintains a zero-tolerance policy against drinking and driving.
  • Use of Illegal Drugs can result in long jail sentences and steep fines.

Arrest Notification:  Qatari authorities do not routinely notify the U.S. Embassy of a U.S. citizen’s arrest. If you are arrested or detained, ask police or prison officials to notify the U.S. Embassy immediately. If you are not allowed to do so, ask a friend or family member to contact the U.S. Embassy.  See our  webpage  for further information.

For more serious crimes, Qatari authorities may not allow U.S. Embassy officials to visit until the initial interrogation is completed.

Qatari police sometimes arrest U.S. citizens without providing access to legal counsel.  You could be arrested for being a:

  • Potential witness to a crime (including traffic accidents involving injuries; slander, traffic arguments, etc.)
  • Relative of a suspect
  • Criminal Suspect

If arrested—regardless of the charge—you may spend 1-2 nights in jail before a hearing takes place. Once arrested, only the Qatari Public Prosecution and Courts have the authority to grant a release.

See our  webpage  for further information.

Qatari law favors employers over employees.  In the event of a contract or employment dispute, Qatari authorities refer to the Arabic language of a contract. Employees have limited recourse if their employer terminates a contract early. If a sponsor files a complaint against an employee who departed Qatar, the employee may be barred from returning to Qatar, even on a tourist or airport visa. Many terminated U.S. citizens have been barred from departing Qatar because of pre-existing debt.

Despite recent legal changes, transferring employment prior to the end of a contract often requires the permission of the previous employer and is subject to approval by the Ministry of the Interior. Additional mechanisms for transferring employers exist through the Ministry of Interior in cases such as bankruptcy, abuse, or repeated failure to pay an employee on time.

Drug Use: Most drugs that are illegal in the United States are also illegal in Qatar, including marijuana/THC, CBD products, and vape products. The potential consequences for use or possession may be harsh.

Clothing : Many public areas in Qatar have dress codes that require both men and women cover shoulders, chests, stomachs, and knees, and that tight leggings be covered by a long shirt or dress. Attire standards can vary between neighborhoods and facilities.  Faith-Based Travelers:  Religion is a very sensitive issue in Qatar; treat any discussions on religion with care and caution. The law provides for a prison sentence of up to seven years for defaming, desecrating, or committing blasphemy against Islam, Christianity, or Judaism. Public worship by non-Islamic faiths and atheism are illegal and subject to prosecution.

Proselytizing is against the law.  Attempts to covert a member of another religion or even “share your faith” can be considered “proselytizing.” Penalties cancan include deportation or imprisonment.

While you may import religious material for personal use,  bringing religious materials into the country for proselytizing purposes is prohibited.

Charitable activities, both religious and non-religious, must be approved in advance by the Ministry of Social Affairs.

LGBTQI+ Travelers:  Same-sex sexual relations between men are illegal, even if consensual. Penalties include lashing, lengthy prison sentences and/or deportation.

There is no law criminalizing same-sex sexual relations between women, though cultural norms are conservative.

Businesses are prohibited from selling and individuals are prohibited from distributing rainbow colored merchandise.

See our  LGBTI Travel Information  page and section 6 of our  Human Rights report  for further details.

Travelers with Disabilities: The law in Qatar prohibits discrimination against persons with physical, sensory, intellectual, or mental disabilities, the law is not enforced.  Social acceptance of persons with disabilities in public is not as prevalent as in the in the United States.  Expect accessibility to be limited in public transportation, lodging, communication/information, and general infrastructure.

Students : See our  Students Abroad  page and  FBI travel tips .

Women Travelers:  Unaccompanied expatriate women may be verbally and/or physically harassed. In deference to Islamic culture, avoid wearing sleeveless shirts, halter-tops, or shorts. Only wear athletic clothing in public when engaged in sports activities.

See our travel tips for  Women Travelers .

Journalists : Journalists, including independent content creators and vloggers, need specific visas and permissions to use photography and videography equipment, or to conduct interviews or reporting within Qatar. There is no legal guarantee of press freedom or freedom of expression in Qatar.

Photography : Photographing local people in Qatar, particularly women, is illegal without permission.

COVID-19 Testing:  COVID-19 tests are available from many local medical providers and hospitals. Testing is paid for by the individual or, in some instances, their insurance plan or employer. Private hospitals charge QR 50 - 160 test. Test results are usually provided by email, but some clinics require you to pick up the travel certificate in person. Please refer to the Ministry of Public Health’s webpage for additional information.

COVID-19 Vaccines:   The COVID-19 vaccine is available for U.S. citizens to receive in Qatar. Please refer to the Ministry of Public Health’s webpage for additional information.

Visit the FDA's website to learn more about FDA-approved vaccines in the United States.

Modern medical facilities and Western-style pharmacies are available. Doctors and hospitals expect immediate cash payment for health services.

For information on the Qatari national healthcare system, see the  Qatar Ministry of Health website .

For emergency services in Qatar, dial 999.

Ambulance services are widely available.

We do not pay medical bills.  Be aware that U.S. Medicare/Medicaid does not apply overseas. Most hospitals and doctors overseas do not accept U.S. health insurance.

Medical Insurance:  Make sure your health insurance plan provides coverage overseas. Most care providers overseas only accept cash payments. See  our webpage  for more information on insurance coverage. Visit the  U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention  for more information on the type of insurance you should consider before you travel overseas.

We strongly recommend supplemental insurance to cover medical evacuation.

Always carry your prescription medication in original packaging, along with your doctor’s prescription. Some prescription medications from the United States are unavailable or restricted in Qatar, for example, stimulants, strong pain medications, and some medications used by HIV+ patients. Check with the  Qatari customs authority  on proper travel procedures and the  Ministry of Public Health  to ensure the medication is legal in Qatar. Discuss a health care plan with your doctor before you travel.

Contraceptives, Pregnancy, and Prenatal Care:  Sexual intercourse outside of marriage is illegal in Qatar.  As such, pregnant women must present a marriage certificate to receive prenatal care at medical facilities in Qatar.  Unmarried pregnant women should consult the U.S. Embassy prior to pursuing prenatal care in Qatar. Contraceptives are available over the counter with no prescription required. Emergency contraceptives are not available. We advise all travelers to plan accordingly.

Vaccinations : Be up-to-date on all  vaccinations  recommended by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Further Health Information:

  • World Health Organization
  • U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention  (CDC)

Air Quality:  Air quality is poor in Qatar, with frequent dust and particle pollution. Members of sensitive groups may experience more serious health effects. Visit  AirNow Department of State  for information on air quality at U.S. Embassies and Consulates.

The U.S. Embassy maintains a  list of doctors and hospitals . We do not endorse or recommend any specific medical provider or clinic.

Travel and Transportation

Road Conditions and Safety: For current traffic regulations, see the  Ministry of Interior’s Traffic Police  website.

Driving:  The legal minimum driving age is 18.  Holders of a U.S. issued driver’s license can drive in Qatar for two weeks, but most car rental agencies require an international driver’s license. Three-month Temporary Licenses are available.  International Driving Licenses are valid in Qatar for six months from the date of arrival.  Resident expatriates should apply for a full Qatari license. If you are caught operating a vehicle without a valid license, penalties can be severe.  For more information, see the Qatari Traffic Services website .

Traffic accidents  are one of the leading causes of death in Qatar. The extensive use of roundabouts, numerous road construction projects, and high-speed driving can be challenging. In rural areas, poor lighting, wandering camels, and roads without shoulders create hazards.  If you are in an accident without a license, any insurance may be held invalid, and you could be left with extensive bills and legal charges.

Avoid arguments over traffic incidents . Qatari citizens who feel insulted can file a police complaint that can result in your arrest and overnight detention. Drivers are liable for persons injured in a traffic accident. Local police have held U.S. citizens overnight while ascertaining the extent of injuries.

Traffic Fines:  Please be aware that traffic offenses are easily captured via well-placed cameras and the fines can be expensive. Unpaid traffic fines can result in an exit ban until reconciled.

Public Transportation:  Regulated and registered taxi services (Uber, Karwa, Fox Transportation, and Careem) are widely available and generally safe to use. The Embassy recommends you avoid use unlicensed taxi operators or drivers who approach you and attempt to solicit business. Do not allow the driver to pick up additional passengers along the way. To avoid cultural misunderstandings, females traveling alone should always sit in the back (never the front) seat.

Qatar Rail : The Doha Metro is safe, modern, and inexpensive.

Mowasalat Public Bus : Laborers and construction workers predominantly use this mode of public transportation. The front seats in the buses are generally reserved for women and children. The U.S. Embassy recommends the use of regulated taxi services rather than public buses.

See our  Road Safety page  for more information.

Aviation Safety Oversight:  The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has assessed the government of Qatar’s Civil Aviation Authority as being in compliance with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) aviation safety standards for oversight of Qatar’s air carrier operations. Further information may be found on the  FAA’s safety assessment page .

Maritime Travel:  Mariners planning travel to Qatar should also check for  U.S. maritime advisories and alerts . Information may also be posted to the  U.S. Coast Guard homeport website , and the NGA broadcast warnings .

AUGUST 2023 UPDATE: According to Qatar Government’s Hukoomi helpline, visitors traveling on an instant visa and staying in Qatar for less than 30 days do not need to obtain Health insurance . However it is highly recommended to have insurance as it can be helpful in case of an emergency.

My family staying in Qatar since 7th March 2024 and I want to extend Hayya Tourist Visa A1 for My Family. Do I need to buy only a new Health Insurance Policy online through Qatar Insurance Company or any medical check up also requires..

Greetings, my mother is currently in A1 Hayya visa status since March 4th, and today her visit visa got approved. Kindly guide me in converting my A1 Hayes visa into a visit visa.

Hi Kavitha, You can try visiting the Airport Immigration office (near Qatar Airways Cargo). Sometimes they would allow visa change type inside country by paying QR 500 (no guarantee). If they don’t allow, you will have to exit to Saudi Arabia and come back on new visa. Here is how: https://www.dohaguides.com/visa-changing-process-via-abu-samra-land-border/

Dear ALL, I am writing to inform you that I have recently obtained approval from METRASH for my mother’s application. I have also received a confirmation SMS regarding this matter. However, I am encountering difficulties when attempting to make the payment for the VISA fees (amounting to QR 200), as I am receiving an error message stating that the health insurance has not been paid.

I have thoroughly checked the METRASH platform, but there appears to be no available option to make the insurance payment. Consequently, I would like to inquire whether it is necessary for me to visit the MOI website and pay the insurance fee for one month separately. Moreover, I would appreciate clarification on whether such payment will be automatically updated in the system, subsequently allowing me to proceed with the payment of the VISA fees (QR 200). I kindly request a prompt response to this matter.

Hi OB, For health insurance, you are not paying through Metrash. It should be paid directly to the insurance company and it will be updated in the system (through visa number). When you receive the visa approval SMS there will be a link to the MOPH website from where you can select an insurance company and buy insurance directly. This will take some time (less than 24 hours) to update in the MOI system. The visa payment and visa print option will work after this only. If you are having technical difficulties, you can call 109.

Dear DOHA GUIDE TEAM, The message i received from MOI mentioning its approved didnt have any links thats the ISSUE

Hi OB, You can use this link and select any provider: https://www.moph.gov.qa/arabic/derpartments/policyaffairs/hfid/hirs/insurancecompanies/Pages/default.aspx Make sure to enter the correct passport number and name.

I would like to visit Qatar with my family by road for a short visit of two days. Is health insurance mandatory? I am a GCC resident with an Indian passport Please guide

Hi Shruthi, Health insurance is recommended but not mandatory for short trips less than 30 days.

Hello DG, I bought Insurance policy for my Son last month and the Policy start date is Dec.17 this year but He was not able to travel on the that day. He is travelling here to Qatar with Visit visa only this coming Dec 29. What should I do to change the policy start date to Dec. 29?

Hi Jr, You need to contact your insurance provider. They can change in the system.

Hi DG, The application for family visit visa is approved, how many months should I purchase for health insurance?

Hi Mariam, Minimum is one month. If you plan to apply for an extension, you can buy up to 6 months. You can also buy for one month now and purchase additional duration later.

Good day DG, With the new regulations posted by MoI with the mandatory health insurance for family resident visa (yearly), how many months should I purchased? And how? I have already an approved resident visa for my husband. Still he is in the Philippines. During the application it does not say that insurance is mandatory. How should i go about it now? Thank you.

Hi Anne, Currently there is no clarification about insurance for already approved visa. This may be applicable to new applications only. If you want you can purchase one month insurance for QR 50.

Thanks for this. By the way how to purchase 1 month insurance for 50qr? Thank you.

Hi Anne, This is the official website: https://www.moph.gov.qa/english/derpartments/policyaffairs/hfid/hirs/insurancecompanies/Pages/default.aspx You can click on any insurance company and purchase. The rate is the same for all companies.

Hello, I am planning to travel to Qatar for 3 weeks between November 3rd and 26 on a Hayya entry visa. What should my insurance coverage be? The 30 days option or the Hayya option?

Hayya option is extending my validity until January 24, 2024 and I plan to only stay in Qatar for three weeks. I prefer not to pay the extra 100 riyals

Hi Jasim, If your return ticket is within 30 days take 30 days insurance. Normally it is accepted.

hello, i plan to visit my sister in doha from 1st nov 23 to 10th nov 23 with my two children and mother. Do i still need health insurance for ten days stay?

Hi Asma, As per the updated rules, health insurance is not needed for visits less than 30 days. However some airline staff don’t know this rule and will ask for insurance. If you are being insisted you can purchase insurance using your mobile for QR 50 (within 5 minutes). Note: If you are taking Family Visit Visa insurance is compulsory (your sponsor will get an SMS to take insurance).

Hello I hope this helps someone. I emailed Hukoomi to ask if Mandatory Health Insurance is needed for short visits. They replied:-

“Dear Valued Customer, Thank you for contacting us on Hukoomi, Please note that visitors traveling on an instant visa and staying in Qatar for less than 30 days do not need to obtain Health insurance. We are always happy to serve you, Thank you for contacting us. Best Regards,”

Hi Zubair, Thanks for the information. We have added this to the article. Hope it helps others.

Hello, I am planning to visit Qatar with my wife and two kids and stay for only 11 days

Do I need Health insurance to apply for visa entry.

Hi Momo, As per official sources, health insurance is only mandatory if staying for more than 30 days. However most airlines are asking for this during check-in. We recommend taking health insurance.

Dear DG Team, Please advise.. Travel Insurance and Health Insurance both are mandatory for the Guest who coming to Qatar on Hayya ? Thank you.

Hi Rifkhan, Only health insurance (from MOPH approved provider) is required.

We hold Australian Passports and will arrive in Doha next month in Transit to Sydney. Since we have 20 hours of transit time before the connecting flight to Sydney, we want to do a 3-hour transit tour in Doha. Are we allowed to do that? Our baggage will be interlined so we do not have to clear our baggage through customs. Please advise whether we need to obtain a transit visa and also health insurance prior to arrival in Doha, Hamad International Airport.

Hi Colin, As Australian citizens you can get visa on arrival. Usually they will not ask health insurance for short duration trips. If required you can buy online from the airport itself.

I travel to Qatar regularly for work. How can I purchase a multiple entry medical insurance for a 12-month period. Its quite frustrating having to purchase a new policy every month, especially when I have international medical insurance. The company I use, is not a Qatar based company, and is not on the registered on your list. I saw on the website there is an option for an annual policy, but there is no guidance as to which company does this. The one company I tried, said you had to be a Qatari resident. Is there a link you could send me to assist with this?

Thanks, Claire

I am coming on GCC Hayya visa which is single entry and for 1 month, thus do I need health insurance, so how can I get the insurance for 1 month?

Moreover, if I have an insurance issued in my residing country which covers qatar, will I still require one?

Hi Ahamed, You will need to take health insurance from any local provider listed on the MOPH website .

HI Doha Guide team, Thanks for the info but Once we go on Local Health insurance provider website , There are two options 1. Visit 2. Hayya

which one to choose to issue a health insurance for Visa of 30days

Hi Gautam, Select “Visit”. If you select “Hayya”, it would automatically select date till January 2024.

I need to know about the visa on arrival, i am UAE resident with Indian passport and engineer visa. I will be travelling on June 23. what are the visa requirements? will i be eligible for visa on arrival or do i need to apply visa on the hayya portal and ask my family in Qatar to add me in their hayya portal as a guest? thank you.

Hi Aaquib, You can get GCC Residents Visa On Arrival (as you are engineer) or apply online in advance and travel with the entry permit so that you don’t have to worry about approval. Here are the details: https://www.dohaguides.com/qatar-visa-on-arrival-for-gcc-residents/

This is May 2023 and our visit to Qatar is for several days in October 2023. Can we get our 30 day one month health insurance now ahead of time so that we can cross it off our list…but not have it become effective until October? Or do we have to wait until closer to our trip? Thank you.

Hi Linda, Please wait till September. It can be done online quickly and you never know when rules change.

Hi DG, Good Day! My family is coming with Hayya Card and they will stay here next 3months. I would like to know if they need insurance until January 2024 or for 3 months? Please advise. Regards,

Hi Smijesh, Even though the Hayya portal says insurance is required till January, most airlines are accepting travellers with insurance until return flight date. We never know when they will become strict about this. If they insist on insurance for full duration, you can take additional insurance online while at the airport.

Hi DG, Appreciate your quick response.

You are welcome Smijesh!

I would like to ask regarding the Visa on Arrival. Am planning to go on June 30 and will be back on July 1 also. I am a UAE resident and a Philippine passport holder. Kindly advise what are the requirements needed as of today April 10,2023.

Hi Gemma, Philippines is not included in the list of countries eligible for regular visa on arrival. You can check if your profession is eligible for GCC Residents Visa On Arrival: https://www.dohaguides.com/qatar-visa-on-arrival-for-gcc-residents/ If your profession is not eligible, please contact the Qatar Government Helpline at +974-44069999 or [email protected] .

Hi I book my eid holidays, 4 day in Qatar, I still need a health insurance? I only stayed 4 days in Qatar, kindly reply thank you

Hi Sara, Health insurance is required even for 1 day.

i made a mistake in insurance name. can it be solved?

Hi Saad, You can contact your insurance provider and they can fix it.

Want to turn a layover into a trip? These 8 stopover programs can help.

Airline stopover programs offer free hotels and other discounts to incentivize longer layovers.

qatar visit policy

When you’re traveling great distances, you often take connecting flights to intriguing destinations without getting a real chance to experience the culture. You drop in, scope out the airport gift shop and leave.

A few airlines have been working to change that by running “stopover programs.” These initiatives allow travelers to tack more time on their layover at no extra charge, and sometimes even include a free or discounted hotel stay.

“They’re a good way for people to — at no extra cost — see a destination,” said Matthew Kepnes, the travel writer behind the blog Nomadic Matt .

Should travelers be wary of these offers? There’s no such thing as a free lunch, after all, but experts say you can think of it as a form of advertising.

“Usually they exist because they’re sponsored by the home country as a means of promoting tourism,” said Scott Keyes, founder of the flight booking site Going .

Keyes says countries and airlines have a number of reasons for offering free or discounted trips to tourists. No. 1, it’s good advertising. You may be more likely to choose an airline if they have this perk, and you may be more likely to visit a country if you can do it at a discount. Then there’s the influx of tourism dollars from stopover visitors.

Here’s a brief list of places you can go without paying any additional airfare.

Hot springs, wild horses and otherworldly natural beauty await travelers in Iceland, and two airlines offer stopover programs to go see them.

The first is Icelandair , which has offered the program since the ’50s . The program allows travelers — usually on their way to Europe — to spend up to seven days in Iceland before moving on to their final destination.

Second is the new Icelandic airline on the block, Play . The airline offers a “ stayover booking ” option allowing customers on transatlantic flights the option to stay up to 10 days in Iceland on the outbound trip, the return or both.

Stopover in Istanbul , Turkish Airlines’ program, includes a free hotel stay. It’s open to travelers with connections in Istanbul of at least 20 hours. If you’re flying coach, you’re eligible for a night at a four-star hotel. Business class customers can get up to two nights in a five-star hotel. Travelers must book arrangements for their stopover at least 72 hours before their flight, and will need to be approved for a hotel voucher through an application process.

Pause your journey to Central or South America with an interlude of up to seven days in Panama City with the Panama Stopover program from CopaAirlines. On the airline’s flight booking page, customers can select the option to add a stopover in Panama to flights to or from any destination in its network. If you want more time exploring beaches, nightlife and Panamanian cuisine, the airline also offers a second stopover, but it’s not free. According to the website, there “may be an additional cost” of $250 plus taxes and fees.

Unlock a mini trip to one of Europe’s most popular tourist countries with Tap Air Portugal’s Portugal Stopover Program. Unlike most stopover programs, this gives customers two layover destinations to pick: the beachside metropolis Lisbon , or Porto, the gateway to wine country. It also offers customers a 25 percent discount (excluding taxes) on additional domestic flights if you’d like to add a second stopover city to your trip. The program is valid on certain one-way and round-trip itineraries during the flight over or return, and can be accessed on the website’s “ book a flight ” tab. Click on “add a free TAP Stopover” to see whether your trip is eligible.

Qatar Airways stopover packages , in partnership with tourism organization Discover Qatar , include heavily discounted hotel reservations to sweeten the deal. Packages range from the standard option, offering travelers four-star hotel stays starting at $14 a night per person (based on double room share), to a luxury beachside option that includes a five-star hotel stay, breakfast and all-inclusive Doha Sands Beach access from $144. Travelers can book on the Qatar Airways website, and add stays up to four nights. The program is subject to availability and is only eligible for Qatar Airways passengers with at least 12 hours transit time in Doha.

Iberia, the flag carrier of Spain, advertises the chance to explore the country’s capital city with the Stopover Hola Madrid program. First, select a route that stops in Madrid ; next, you can select up to six nights to stay; then book and browse discounted offers available to stopover customers, including tours, food and transportation. The stopover can be selected for the outbound or return flight. While the airline website says the program is available on most routes, you may need to play with dates to find flights with stopover availability.

United Arab Emirates

The UAE is home to two lauded airlines, each with programs to entice stopover travelers.

Etihad’s Abu Dhabi Stopover markets itself as a chance to explore the country’s capital city with discounted hotel stays. The more budget-friendly “amazing stopover” offers stays up to two nights at four-star hotels, while the premium version offers up to 40 percent off luxury four or five-star hotels for two to four nights.

Emirates has “Dubai Connect,” a program advertised to customers with layovers of at least eight hours (or six if you’re flying business class) and includes a complimentary hotel stay, some meals and transportation to and from the airport. There are a number of stipulations for qualifying for the program; for example, you must have a connection flight with the shortest layover available (so if there’s one with a four-hour layover to your final destination available, you won’t qualify for the freebies). Make sure to read the fine print before booking online. Already booked an eligible Emirates flight? You can add the stopover to existing reservations.

Choose your own adventure

You don’t actually need an airline to offer a stopover program to take advantage of a layover. Kepnes says you may be able to build your own stopover program for cheaper. All you have to do is search for flights with really long layovers in places you’d like to visit that don’t require too many hurdles to get out of the airport.

Last year, instead of finding the fastest or cheapest flight from Thailand to the United States, I booked one with a nine-hour layover in Tokyo ; I took the train into the city, ate delicious ramen, went shopping and even hit up a hot spring spa before heading back to the airport for my flight home. The year before that, I did something similar in Istanbul and highly recommend such side quests to anyone up for an adventure.

Here's what the Credit Card Competition Act could do to your airline miles and travel rewards

  • The Credit Card Competition Act would lower credit card swipe fees.
  • Major airlines have said that the bill could reduce or completely end travel reward programs.
  • About 40% of American credit card users have a card that is co-branded with a major airline.

Insider Today

When Jess Bohorquez stayed in a luxury hotel with a view of the Sydney Opera House, she didn't pay a cent.

The influencer and creator of "Points By J," a platform that teaches people tricks for low-cost travel, said she uses credit card points to upgrade her vacations and teaches her audience of over 180,000 Instagram followers to do the same.

Since she started accumulating travel points a few years ago, Bohorquez told Business Insider she's gotten discounted flight upgrades, free hotel stays , and trip insurance through her Chase credit card. She even has access to premium lounges at most airports.

"It gets you hooked once you have that first successful points deduction for free travel," said Bohorquez, adding that it's easy to get perks if you know the rules of your credit card. "It's such an exciting feeling."

However, those perks could be in danger of disappearing. The US credit card market is at a crossroads : Politicians and companies are struggling to compromise on how much card swipe fees should cost, who should get the money, and how all of it will impact consumers.

More than eight in 10 Americans use a credit card to make payments, get cash back, and build credit, according to The Federal Reserve . About 40% of those people have a card that is co-branded with a major airline.

Some lawmakers hope to bring more competition to the market, in hopes of limiting the power of major credit card companies and lowering fees. But airlines and travelers worry it could mean the end of rewards programs .

Major airlines' bottom line depends on credit card companies

The Credit Card Competition Act , which was introduced to Congress in June 2023 would require major banks to use at least one credit card payment network that isn't Mastercard or Visa — companies that control more than 80% of US credit card transactions — to introduce more competition into the credit card market.

Visa and Mastercard currently charge businesses about a 3% transaction fee when a customer uses their credit card. The more people that use a credit card, the more revenue banks and card companies make.

That's where airlines come in.

Airlines make money off selling tickets and offering in-flight purchases. But co-branded credit cards like Chase Sapphire Preferred, Delta SkyMiles, and the United Explorer Card are profit centers for banks and airlines.

Related stories

The airlines sell banks "points." Credit card holders are then awarded those points for spending money with the co-branded card. Banks and credit card companies make money off of the swipe fees, and airlines only have to pay for the points if they are actually redeemed by travelers. It also makes travelers more likely to choose their specific airline whenever they fly.

Sen. Dick Durbin , a Democrat from Illinois, is the lead sponsor of the Credit Card Competition Act. In a statement to Business Insider, he said the bill would introduce necessary competition into the credit card market.

Durbin worries that major airlines are becoming like "credit card companies that fly planes."

"(Airlines) want to protect the billions of dollars in windfall profits they collect through sweetheart deals they have negotiated with the biggest Wall Street banks at the expense of consumers and local businesses," he wrote.

Durbin said his bill would not end travel rewards.

Credit card rewards incentivize travelers

Businesses typically make up for these credit card swipe fees by raising prices for customers . In theory, increasing competition and lowering swipe fees would translate into more affordable consumer prices.

This could mean cheaper — or at least more stable — prices for buyers, per NerdWallet .

Bohorquez, however, said increased credit card competition is unlikely to lower prices in practice. Instead, she said business airlines and credit companies will be less incentivized to offer loyalty perks like frequent-flyer miles and fraud protections.

Major airlines have already said the Credit Card Competition Act could end these reward programs. Southwest Airlines said in a statement to BI that it "strongly opposes" the bill.

"This legislation is bad policy and would undermine, if not completely end, credit card rewards programs that millions of Americans rely on for their vacations or personal travel needs," Southwest wrote.

United Airlines referred BI to Airlines for America, a lobbying group that represents the US airline industry. Delta and American Airlines did not respond to BI by the time of publication.

Airlines for America said in a press release from July that airlines believe credit card competition would harm their "ability to reward our most enthusiastic customers' loyalty and putting the viability of these programs at risk."

Still, it's unclear whether the Competition Act will become law. The bill was referred to the Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs in July, but hasn't yet been passed by the House or Senate.

Until more movement on the bill occurs, Bohorquez plans to make the most of her rewards.

"I'm not terribly worried about our points going anywhere anytime soon," she said. "I hope that people continue to earn and enjoy their credit card points and take a lot of free trips."

Do you use your credit card for travel rewards? Have you saved money on a vacation by using points? Reach out to this reporter at [email protected] .

Watch: While Delta's business is 'extremely robust,' the airline's marketing chief stays focused on the data
