Pinehurst #10 opened this week. Want to play it?

The PGA Tour is returning to the Baltimore area for the first time in 60 years

Nick Piastowski

A golfer could have been born, played on the PGA tour and been a veteran on the senior circuit since the last time the PGA Tour swung through the Baltimore area.

But Charm City can finally dust off its golf bag, according to reports.

Caves Valley Golf Club, in Owings Mills, Md., will host next year’s BMW Championship, the Chicago Tribune and Baltimore Sun reported Wednesday, marking the PGA Tour’s first stop in the Baltimore area in nearly 60 years. An official announcement is expected on Thursday morning.

The tournament, a FedEx Cup playoff event and the final stop before the season-ending Tour Championship , has been held in the Chicago area every other year since 2011. The Chicago Tribune reported that the Western Golf Association, which conducts the event, wants to both grow the BMW Championship’s national presence and boost donations to the Evans Scholars Foundation, which receives all proceeds from the tournament.

Rory McIlroy enters the week as the newly crowned world No. 1.

Maryland’s version of the tournament will be played Aug. 17-21, 2021, the first PGA Tour event in the Baltimore area since the 1962 Eastern Open Invitational at Mt. Pleasant Golf Club, won by Doug Ford. The 2020 tournament will be played at Olympia Fields Country Club on Aug. 20-23, and the event’s defending champion is Justin Thomas .

Caves Valley, a Tom Fazio design that opened in 1991, is not completely unfamiliar with bigger events, as it has hosted USGA championships, men’s and women’s NCAA championships, the 2002 U.S. Senior Open, the 2007 Palmer Cup, the LPGA’s 2014 International Crown and the 2017 Senior Players Championship.

Spring officially sprung Sunday, which meant golfers were eager to hit the links.

And fans of the PGA Tour will have a chance to enjoy seeing the best in the world in person this year in Maryland. The tour will return to Maryland in May at TPC Potomac for the Wells Fargo Championship.

In August, the BMW Championship was a wild success, bringing the PGA Tour back to Baltimore for the first time in 56 years. Monster crowds packed Caves Valley Golf Club for a wild finish and attendance to envy.

Much of the crowd from the BMW Championship will surely swarm TPC Potomac. It excites PGA Tour winner Max Homa, who loved the crowd at Caves.

"That's what we all like to play in front of, a kind of energetic, large crowd," Homa said. "So, it would be awesome if it could be like that. Those crowds were fun, even as hard as that golf course was to walk and how hot it was, they had a lot of energy."

Baltimore proved it will show up and show out for the PGA Tour, and the Wells Fargo Championship knows that well. Baltimore golf fans will be targeted to go to D.C.

"We know there's a great fan base here -- great, great golf knowledge here. So, we felt like the time of the year -- first week of May, we're six weeks today from the tournament -- we think the timing is to our advantage. We think the field will be solid. So, we believe the fans will come out and support the event," said Gary Sobba, director of the Wells Fargo Championship.

Matching the magic from Caves Valley is no small order, but it's a task the folks at TPC Potomac happily take on.

There are many discounted tickets for different groups, and active military members may attend the tournament for free. The first round tees off on May 5.

With the BMW Championship (and FedEx Cup playoffs), the PGA Tour is finally back in Maryland

pga tour schedule maryland

OWINGS MILLS, Md. — For close to 40 years, through a rotation of courses and sponsors, the PGA Tour made an annual stop in the District’s suburbs, bringing some of the most distinguished golfers in the world to an affluent Maryland enclave with a long-standing passion for the sport.

Then in 2018, the tour severed its regular relationship with the Washington region after a tournament that arrived as the Kemper Open and concluded simply as the National was unable to secure a lead sponsor , even at the urging of Tiger Woods, the host of the event starting in 2007.

This week, however, major professional golf will return to the D.C. area — or at least a short drive from it — when the BMW Championship begins Thursday at Caves Valley Golf Club, some 55 miles from TPC Potomac at Avenel Farm, site of the last local PGA Tour event.

TPC Potomac, incidentally, is hosting next year’s Wells Fargo Championship in May because Quail Hollow in Charlotte, the regular host of the event, will be undergoing maintenance in preparation for the 2022 Presidents Cup.

“I just love going out there for the entire experience,” Jordan Spieth said of Caves Valley, where the No. 12 player in the Official World Golf Ranking estimated he has played roughly 10 times. He will be part of a field comprising the top 70 in the FedEx Cup standings for the second of three legs in the PGA Tour’s playoffs.

Patrick Reed hospitalized, putting FedEx Cup playoffs and Ryder Cup in doubt

Spieth, the 2015 FedEx Cup champion, is seventh in the FedEx Cup standings, well behind leader Tony Finau in the race for the $15 million check that goes to the points leader following the Tour Championship at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta running Sept. 2-5.

But first comes the BMW Championship on the heels of the Northern Trust, the opening tournament in the FedEx Cup playoffs. Finau won that event Monday on the first playoff hole when Cameron Smith was undone by a wayward drive.

The BMW Championship is making its first appearance in Maryland since it joined the FedEx Cup playoff rotation. The tournament also represents the first stop for the PGA Tour in the Baltimore area since 1962, when Doug Ford won the Eastern Open Invitational at Mount Pleasant Golf Club.

Officials with the BMW Championship had been seeking to play the tournament, which typically takes place in the Chicago suburbs, in another city to grow its national profile and generate additional donations to the Evans Scholar Foundation.

The rapid pace of ticket sales has underscored the anticipation for the BMW Championship and the tour’s return to Maryland. Weekend passes to the tented hospitality areas have sold out, with tickets available only on the secondary market. Single-day passes onto the grounds remain available.

The Western Golf Association, which oversees the BMW Championship, announced in June that ticket sales were outpacing those from the 2019 tournament by 40 percent. The 2019 BMW Championship, according to officials, drew north of 130,000 spectators from 44 states and three countries to storied Medinah Country Club in northeastern Illinois.

Jon Rahm, the reigning U.S. Open champion , enters this week second in the FedEx Cup standings, trailing Finau by 585 points and slightly ahead of Smith. The winner in each of the first two tournaments in the playoffs receives 2,000 points. The top 30 players in the points standings after the BMW Championship qualify for the Tour Championship, which starts with the top-ranked player at 10 under par and the other players staggered below based on their points position.

Rahm had been leading the Northern Trust through the first three rounds, with the tournament at Liberty National in Jersey City moving to a Monday finish because of Tropical Storm Henri. The Spaniard had a chance to force a three-way playoff with Finau and Smith but made a bogey at No. 18.

He won last year’s BMW Championship at Olympia Fields Country Club south of Chicago by sinking a 66-foot birdie putt on the first playoff hole to defeat Dustin Johnson. Both players had finished at 4 under par on a course that hosted the 2003 U.S. Open.

Jack Nicklaus on his Donald Trump endorsement, Tiger’s future — and a pickleball injury

“Last year was the U.S. Open. Let’s just be honest about it and be fair,” Rahm said of the 2020 tournament. “That event was a U.S. Open with a 70-man field, so definitely the type of golf I enjoy. Plus, it’s the top 70 players. It’s the week before East Lake, so I think we’re all trying to get into form before that very last big event.”

In addition to advancing to the Tour Championship, also at stake this week are coveted Ryder Cup points. For the U.S. team, the top six in the Ryder Cup points standings earn automatic spots, with Collin Morikawa, Johnson, Bryson DeChambeau, Brooks Koepka and Justin Thomas already having qualified .

U.S. Ryder Cup captain Steve Stricker will pick the other six players to complete the roster.

Finau sits in sixth and Xander Schauffele is seventh in those standings, with Spieth eighth. Harris English and Patrick Reed round out the top 10, though Reed is hospitalized with bilateral pneumonia and will miss the BMW . Spieth is about 335 points behind Finau.

“I’ve put a lot of work in to kind of try to get back toward the top in the FedEx Cup standings,” said Spieth, whose seven top-five finishes this year include a win at the Texas Open and a runner-up at the British Open . “Get back in the winner’s circle and really, most importantly, be a very consistent player week in and week out, and I feel like this year the results are finally lending themselves to the work that’s been put in.”

'It's very exciting': PGA Tour returns to Maryland for Wells Fargo Championship

by John Gonzalez

The Wells Fargo Championship, one of the premier golf events on the PGA Tour, is celebrating its 20th year. And for the first time in four years, Potomac, Md. will be home to pro golf.

POTOMAC, Md. (7News) — The Wells Fargo Championship, one of the premier golf events on the PGA Tour, is celebrating its 20th year. And for the first time in four years, Potomac, Md. will be home to pro golf.

TPC Potomac will host the 2022 Wells Fargo Championship from May 5 to 8 at Avenel Farm -- 7News took a tour of the grounds Thursday, everything looked pristine, but there was still a lot of setup going on, from taking care of the actual greens, and setting up hospitality tents to moving massive big screens throughout the area.

Planning for this event started two years ago, in fact, some members of the sales team moved here during that time to get everything ready.

Tournament organizers say having pro golf here in the D.C. area should be automatic every year.

On behalf of Champions for Education, the tournament has distributed over $26 million and raised awareness for numerous charitable foundations in the Charlotte area, and this next week plans to raise the same in here the D.C. area.

Since 2003, the tournament has welcomed all the world’s top 25 players and in 2019 was voted by the players as “Best in Class” among events on the tour schedule. Seven of the tournament’s 16 champions have earned major championship titles.

A strong field is here again in Potomac this year including Rory McIlroy, Xander Schauffele, and Howard University's Greg Odom Jr.

Also a homecoming of sorts for pro golfer Denny McCarthy, a native of Takoma Park. He actually attended grade school just a few miles away at Georgetown Preparatory School, before becoming a two-time All-American golfer at the University of Virginia.

“It’s very exciting you know, the President's cup moving to Charlotte caused us to come up here. We are thrilled to be in DC, it’s a wonderful golf market, we think next week we are going to have a really, really solid field. To bring a Championship with the caliber of the Wells Fargo Championship, that’s a great tournament to bring to the area," said tournament director Gary Sobba said.

Residents and businesses in the region are excited about having the tournament here this year. Now some will tell you traffic is going to be a nightmare over the next week but besides that, this is the type of event that doesn’t come around very often.

Everything is getting organized inside the clubhouse store, and even last-minute pruning going on and protecting all the beautiful flowers from this usually cold weather. 1,350 volunteers will be here this week to help with such a major production.

The last PGA tournament at TPC Avenel was 4 years ago. Parking is available but it requires a 10-minute free shuttle bus ride.

“I think it’s very important, you look at the major markets across the United States and Washington, D.C. is one of the few major markets that doesn’t have annual golf. It’s a challenge to the community, it’s a challenge to the golf community, come out, buy tickets, support the event and hopefully attain annual golf down the road," added Sobba.

Active and retired military are free, while children 15 and under don’t need a general admission ticket when accompanied by an adult ticket holder, one child per adult.

Pga tour announces future, familiar host sites for bmw championship in 2025 and 2026, share this article.

The penultimate event of the FedEx Cup Playoffs is returning to familiar grounds in a few years.

Ahead of the 2022 BMW Championship at Wilmington Country Club in Delaware, on Tuesday the PGA Tour announced the event will be held at Caves Valley Golf Club in Owings Mills, Maryland, in 2025 and Bellerive Country Club, in St. Louis, Missouri, in 2026. Dates have yet to be finalized, but both events are scheduled for August.

“We are excited to bring the BMW Championship back to these iconic venues, giving the amazing fans of the greater Baltimore and St. Louis areas a chance to see the best players in the world up close,” said Vince Pellegrino, the Western Golf Association’s Senior Vice President of Tournaments. “When we consider potential hosts, we look for challenging layouts that can deliver an unmatched experience for fans and our PGA Tour partners. Caves Valley Golf Club and Bellerive Country Club are the perfect additions to our championship lineup.”

Caves Valley hosted last year’s BMW Championship, won by eventual FedEx Cup champion Patrick Cantlay, and helped contribute a record $5.6 million to the Evans Scholars Foundation for caddie scholarships and to establish the Caves Valley Evans Scholars Scholarship House at the University of Maryland.

“It is a tremendous honor for Caves Valley Golf Club to once again host this prestigious championship,” Caves Valley Golf Club President Steve Fader said. “We are still buzzing from last year’s finish and the spotlight that was placed on the Baltimore area. The club will continue its Long-Range Strategic Plan, working with the Fazio Design Group to enhance competitive and agronomic conditions for its membership and all involved with the 2025 BMW Championship.”

Bellerive Country Club previously hosted the 2008 BMW Championship, where Camilo Villegas earned his first PGA Tour win. The club also hosted the 1965 U.S. Open, when Gary Player completed his career grand slam, as well as the 1992 and 2018 PGA Championships. Bellerive will also host the Presidents Cup in 2030.

“Bellerive is thrilled to host the 2026 BMW Championship and welcome the FedExCup Playoffs back to St. Louis,” said Bellerive Country Club President Rick Walsh. “Our club has a storied history of major championship golf. We expect to present a formidable test for the players while celebrating our incredible and supportive community.”

The tournament dates back to 1899, when it debuted as the Western Open, and is the third-oldest tournament on the Tour’s schedule behind only the British Open and U.S. Open. Since 2007, the BMW Championship has raised more than $40 million for caddie scholarships and has helped to send more than 3,300 men and women to college.

The BMW Championship heads back to Olympia Fields Country Club in Chicago in 2023 and will debut at Castle Pines Golf Club in Castle Rock, Colorado, near Denver in 2024.

Five Things to Know: TPC Potomac at Avenel Farm

The history of TPC Potomac at Avenel Farm

As Quail Hollow Club gears up for the Presidents Cup this fall, TPC Potomac at Avenel Farm has stepped in to host the 2022 Wells Fargo Championship.

If the latter course rings a bell, that’s because this staple of Washington, D.C. area golf has seen plenty of PGA TOUR action. It’s going to play long. It’s going to play thick. And if we’re lucky – really lucky – maybe we’ll see a repeat of one of history’s most mind-boggling feats.

HISTORY LESSON

The Wells Fargo Championship has looked not to a rookie, but to a proven TOUR venue to host this year’s tournament. While TPC Potomac at Avenel Farm spent the last three years off the TOUR schedule, it was a stalwart for much of the previous three decades.

In 1987, the Kemper Open (later known as the Booz Allen Classic) moved to TPC Potomac after seven years at Congressional Country Club down the road in Bethesda. The tournament would stay at TPC Potomac through 2006, with the exception of 2005, when it made a one-year return to Congressional while TPC Potomac underwent renovations.

In 2007, the Quicken Loans National, hosted by Tiger Woods and the TGR Foundation, replaced the Booz Allen in the Washington D.C. area and set up shop at Congressional. The tournament would shift to a variety of locations, including two stops at TPC Potomac in 2017 and 2018.

The course also hosted the Bridgestone Senior Players Championship in 2010 and the Korn Ferry Tour’s Mid-Atlantic Championship in 2012 and 2013.

In the Booz Allen Classic era the winners at TPC Potomac included Tom Kite, Lee Janzen, Steve Stricker, Justin Leonard, Rich Beem, Rory Sabbatini and Adam Scott. In the Quicken Loans era, Kyle Stanley knocked off Charles Howell III in a 2017 playoff, and Francesco Molinari shot a final-round 62 and cruised to an eight-stroke victory, his maiden PGA TOUR title, in 2018.

Woods handed Molinari the trophy that day, and it was a sign of things to come. Three weeks later, Molinari won The Open Championship in the same group as Woods at Carnoustie. Two months after that, Molinari beat Woods three times at the Ryder Cup.

Six months later, Tiger got some revenge at Augusta, winning the 2019 Masters.

2. A NEW LOOK

Rory Sabbatini is part of the bridge from the old TPC Potomac to the new TPC Potomac. The 2003 Booz Allen Classic champion will play a different track in his 40s than he did in his 20s.

After the competition left TPC Potomac, then called TPC Avenel, in 2006, a sweeping renovation of the course modernized the layout. The Rock Run Stream Valley, one of the main tributaries of the Potomac River, had become badly eroded by the end of the Booz Allen tenure and caused frequent flooding. As part of the renovation, 5,000 linear feet of the main stream and 2,250 linear feet of eroding stream banks were restored, enhancing the presence of water on the course while leading the way to a new, modern irrigation system.

The renovation also brought the addition of 15 acres of trees, the restructuring of the course to a 7,124-yard par 70, and a re-building of bunkers to their intended Mid-Atlantic style, while adding some Scottish-themed traps. Greens, tees and fairways were rebuilt with Bentgrass.

The 2006-08 renovation also dramatically altered the middle of the course. The par-5 sixth hole was turned into a long par 4. The par-3 ninth hole was rebuilt, while the 10th and 11th holes were combined into a par-5 10th hole playing around the restored creek. The 12th hole became the 11th hole, and the par-5 13th hole was split into a par-3 12th hole and short par-4 13th.

TPC Avenel was now TPC Potomac at Avenel Farm. This name was intended to pay tribute to the history of Avenel Farm, once Maryland’s largest short-horned cattle farm, while also ushering in a new era for the PGA TOUR’s TPC Network venue.

3. ARNIE'S ACES

TPC Potomac at Avenel Farm made its 1986 debut by way of a couple of legends. It served as the first site of the Chrysler Cup, a senior team event featuring a U.S. squad captained by Arnold Palmer and an international roster captained by Gary Player. This would serve as a precursor to the Booz Allen Classic’s arrival in 1987.

On the Tuesday before the event, Palmer, one week before his 57th birthday, was playing a practice round when he hit a 5-iron on the 182-yard par-3 3rd hole and watched the ball land and roll right into the cup – the first hole-in-one at one of golf’s newest competitive tracks.

The next day, on the same hole, with the same club, Palmer hit another beautiful iron shot at the pin. “Don’t go in the hole again,” he yelled. “Don’t do that!” It did.

Palmer’s amazing two-fer marked his 12th and 13th career aces, and a commemorative plaque was promptly installed on the third tee. He would credit his hole-in-one theatrics as important for publicizing the Chrysler Cup in its first year. A TV camera had caught the Wednesday (second) hole-in-one, and while the world was still 20 years from Twitter, local TV news would pick up the clip while newspaper writers worldwide gushed about the unlikely feat.

4. DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE

By the final years of the Booz Allen, TOUR pros had figured out TPC Potomac. Adam Scott won with a 21-under total in 2004. Ben Curtis followed with a 20-under score to win in 2006.

But after the renovation, scores cooled off. Mark O’Meara shot 7 under to win the 2010 Senior PLAYERS at TPC Potomac. On the Korn Ferry Tour, David Lingmerth shot 8 under to win there in 2012, as did Michael Putnam in 2013. When the PGA TOUR returned in 2017, Kyle Stanley knocked off Charles Howell III in a playoff with both players finishing 72 holes at 7 under.

Francesco Molinari was the exception to the rule, shooting a post-renovation record of 21 under to win here in 2018. But to be fair, runner-up Ryan Armour was all the way back at 13 under. And as history now shows, Molinari was about to play lights-out golf for the next few months.

This Wells Fargo Championship probably won’t be a birdie-fest. The new TPC Potomac features more water hazards, more tree trouble, and more distance at a lower par. It’s no pushover.

5. A TOUGH 5

Most weeks on TOUR, the par 5s are players’ four best friends.

At TPC Potomac, there are only two, and they’re beasts.

The first, No. 2, is scheduled to play 641 yards this week, already making it a three-shot hole by distance. The tough decision on the second shot is not about taking aim at the green, but whether players feel comfortable carrying a dry gulch two-thirds of the way down the fairway. Around the green, a deep bunker awaits on the left side, hoping to gobble up any approach shots that miss left. Hit the bunker and par becomes an outstanding save.

The par-5 10th hole, a combination of the old 10th and 11th holes, plays to 591 yards, and the greater challenge here is the angle. A slight dogleg left requires a player to hit a long enough tee shot down the right side of the fairway – away from the hole – to have an angle into the green. A narrow landing area short of the green and a sea of bushes, plus no shortage of thick rough short and left of the green, present all sorts of stress for the second shot.

This explains much of the challenge at TPC Potomac. Without gettable par 5s, and two-putt birdies rare, birdies must come the old-fashioned way on the grounds of the old Avenel Farm.

2024 Masters odds, field: Surprising PGA picks, predictions from same golf model that's hit 10 majors

T he 2024 Masters will be the 88th edition of the tournament, and history could be made if there's another landslide victory. Only once in Masters history has the champion won by at least three strokes in three straight years, which could happen again at the Masters 2024 after Jon Rahm (four-stroke win in 2023) and Scottie Scheffler (three-stroke win in 2022) had dominant victories. However, there's a reason why that's only happened once before (2014-16) since nearly 70% of all Masters have been decided by two strokes or fewer.

The 2024 Masters Tournament begins on Thursday, April 11 from Augusta National, with Scheffler the 5-1 favorite after two victories and a runner-up over his last three events. Rory McIlroy follows at 10-1 in the 2024 Masters odds. Rahm comes in at 13-1, while other 2024 Masters contenders include Jordan Spieth (21-1), Brooks Koepka (21-1) and Cameron Smith (31-1). Before locking in any 2024 Masters picks of your own, be sure to see the 2024 Masters golf predictions and projected leaderboard from the proven computer model at SportsLine .

SportsLine's proprietary model, built by DFS pro Mike McClure, has been red-hot since the PGA Tour resumed in June 2020. In fact, the model is up nearly $9,500 on its best bets since the restart, nailing tournament after tournament.

McClure's model predicted Scottie Scheffler would finish on top of the leaderboard at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and The Players Championship this season. McClure also included Hideki Matsuyama in his best bets to win the 2024 Genesis Invitational. That bet hit at +9000, and for the entire tournament, McClure's best bets returned nearly $1,000.

The model also predicted Jon Rahm would be victorious at the 2023 Sentry Tournament of Champions and The American Express. At the 2023 Masters, the model was all over Rahm's second career major victory heading into the weekend. Rahm was two strokes off the lead heading into the third round, but the model still projected him as the winner. It was the second straight Masters win for the model, which also nailed Scheffler winning in 2022.

In addition, McClure's best bets included Nick Taylor (70-1) winning the 2023 RBC Canadian Open, Jason Day (17-1) winning outright at the 2023 AT&T Byron Nelson, and Rickie Fowler (14-1) finishing on top of the leaderboard at the 2023 Rocket Mortgage Classic. This same model has also nailed a whopping 10 majors entering the weekend. Anyone who has followed it has seen massive returns.

Now that the Masters 2024 field is taking shape, SportsLine simulated the tournament 10,000 times, and the results were surprising. Head to SportsLine now to see the projected leaderboard.

Top 2024 Masters predictions

One major surprise the model is calling for at the 2024 Masters: Rory McIlroy, a four-time major champion and one of the co-favorites, fails to complete the career grand slam and barely cracks the top five at Augusta National. The world's No. 2-ranked golfer is off to a rough start in 2024, with his highest finish through his first five starts being 19th at the Players Championship.

Putting was an issue for McIlroy at the start of the season, as he previously ranked 129th in that area (-0.246). While he has improved to 83rd on the PGA Tour (0.036) and his total shots gained (0.610) is 40th, he is still 123rd in shots gained approaching the green (-0.176). While there appears to be small improvements in his game, his finishes this season are why the model is low on him.

Another surprise: Xander Schauffele, a 24-1 longshot, makes a strong run at the title. He has a much better chance to win it all than his odds imply, so he's a target for anyone looking for a huge payday. The 2020 Olympic gold medalist is one of the most consistent players on the PGA Tour, finishing among the top five in the FedEx Cup rankings the last five seasons. He's placed in the top 10 in three of his last five Masters appearances, including a runner-up in 2019 and a third-place finish in 2021. He enters the 2024 Masters having shot par or better in 13 of his last 17 rounds at Augusta National.

Only Scheffler (seven) has more top 10 finishes this year than Schauffele's six. Half of those have come at signature tournaments, showing how well he fares versus the toughest fields, and he's notched top-fives in three of his last four starts overall. Schauffele is one of three players in the world who rank in the top five in the Official World Golf Ranking and FedEx Cup standings, yet seven golfers have shorter Masters odds 2024. That makes Schauffele a strong value play for golf picks heading to Augusta, as he enters this year's tournament with the second-best scoring average (actual) on the PGA Tour at 68.52.  See who else to pick here .

How to make 2024 Masters picks

The model is also targeting six other golfers with odds of 20-1 or longer to make a strong run at the green jacket. Anyone who backs these longshots could hit it big. You can only see the model's picks here .

Who will win the 2024 Masters, and which longshots will stun the golfing world? Check out the Masters 2024 odds below and then visit SportsLine to see the projected Masters leaderboard, all from the model that's nailed 10 golf majors, including last year's Masters and Open Championship .
