Varied ascent

The meeting point is at the Rifugio Citelli, located in an old, extinct crater. We begin the climb through a forest of Etna birch trees, an endemic species found nowhere else.

The trail climbs steadily over ancient lava flows until we leave the tree line behind us.

190 lava tunnels are scattered across Mount Etna. During our ascent, we visit one of the most beautiful: the Serracozzo Grotto, formed during the 1971 eruption.

Inside we discover beautiful formations similar to stalactites, called “dog’s teeth”.

Majestic summit craters

Arriving at the edge of the Valle del Bove valley, we look directly at the summit craters:

The Northeast Crater was the highest point of Etna for 50 years until it was overtaken by the Southeast Crater in 2021.

The south-eastern crater, currently about 3350 metres high, was only formed in 1971 and has become Etna’s highest point in just 50 years.

We walk along the edge of the Valle del Bove, looking out over this huge semicircular valley on the eastern side of Mount Etna. 37km 2 lie before us, covered with lava flows that have completely covered the once lush, green valley over the last 50 years.

Lateral craters

The descent is through the soft lava sand, on which you can run down as if on snow.

We visit the craters of the 1928 eruption, the last eruption of Etna that destroyed a town, Mascali. And we admire the largest lateral crater: Monte Frumento delle Concazze.

Mount etna summit and crater trek

This full-day  Etna Summit Hike  will take you to an altitude of 3320 meters (10300 ft.) to admire the most fantastic view that Sicily can offer. Along with the excursion, we get onboard of Etna cable car, we enjoy an off-road Unimog Jeep tour, and we are going to walk for a total of six hours, crossing some of the most suggestive trekking trails of the volcano. Get ready to experience the thrill of looking at the vertical walls of the Etna  summit craters plunging and disappearing into the depth of the planet, to hear the rumbling of the explosions, and the look at the emissions of gasses. This guided trekking tour to the summit area is the ultimate Mount Etna tour. The price of the trip includes Transport, tickets for the Cableway and the Unimog Jeep. We provide trekking shoes and walking poles. 

Escursion Details

Our guided tour to the Mt. Etna summit craters starts at 7:30 a.m. One of our guides will pick you up at your hotel, in Taormina, Catania, or surrounding towns. Once at Rifugio Sapienza (Nicolosi) on the south side of Mount Etna, using the cableway and an off-road 4x4 vehicle,  We will reach our trek's starting point at an altitude of 3000 meters. We will climb to the top of the volcano with a three hours walk. Once at the summit, there will be time to enjoy the spectacular view of the sea, the Aeolian island, and most of Sicily's island. The excursion path on the way back passes by some popular landmarks like the Barbagallo craters and the Bove Valley. Our tours to the summit of Etna are scheduled to finish around four p.m.

The price includes transport, cable car, boots and walking poles.

Will we get on board of the cable car.

Mount Etna is an active volcano and if the south side trail is unaccessible we will climb to the summit from the north side, this means we won't board the cable car. The aim of this tour is to reach the summit of Mount Etna not to get on board of the cable car.

How Should I Dress?

At any time of the year you must wear long trousers. Always bring a sweatshirt or jacket. Between. We will provide you with shoes and poles

Are there restrictions?

Mt. Etna Hiking Full Day Tour

Excursion information.

Start . One of Etna Experience’s expert naturalistic guides will pick you up at 8:30 a.m. from your hotel in Catania or from an agreed meeting point, to take you aboard one of our 8-seater vehicles (jeep or minivan).

Trekking . Hours of fascinating trekking around the most interesting places on the North-East side of Etna, scene of the last impressive eruption: Piano Provenzana .

Lunch . There will be another break for a tasty and natural “packed lunch” offered by Etna Experience

Wild nature . Different naturalistic routs with a scheduled circumnavigation of a button-like row of craters, lava-flowing caves and native plants. The tour is also designed for trekking and nature lovers, in good health conditions. Pauses are planned during the hike and this walk is smoother due to the very few obstacles.

Explore the lava caves of Etna . In the afternoon, you will visit a volcanic cave using the equipment provided (helmets and torches) to safely explore it. Our expert guide will introduce you, with some basic information on speleology, to the fascintating phenomena often related to eruptions.

Come back . The Mt Etna Full Day Tour will finish at 5:30/6:00 p.m., when you will come back to Catania.

Almost constantly erupting, Mount Etna is as thrilling a visit as it is picturesque. If you want to get up close to this stratovolcano, which constantly spews lava as it looms above nearby Catania, here’s your itinerary for hiking near the beastly mountain of Sicily , Italy.

Step 1 – Preparation

In the northern region of the mountain, passing through the small town of Linguaglossa, you’ll be able to access dozens of sleeping craters, incredible vistas of the frozen pour of lava from hundreds of years ago, and the steaming mouth of Etna’s tireless peak. These treks can be challenging, with steep climbs and changing altitude, but are well worth the effort.
