FAQ About Travel Insurance to Panama

Travel insurance typically covers trip cancellation, trip interruption, lost or stolen luggage, travel delay, and emergency evacuation. Some travel insurance packages also cover medical-related incidents too. However, remember that the exact coverage depends on the insurance policy.

No, you'll not be required to take out travel insurance for Panama. However, we strongly encourage you to do so anyway, because the cost of healthcare in Panama can be high, and taking out travel insurance will mitigate some or all of the risk of covering those costs yourself if you need medical attention during your stay.

Yes, medical travel insurance is almost always worth it, and we recommend taking out travel insurance whenever visiting a foreign country. Taking out travel insurance will mitigate some or all of the risk of covering those costs yourself in case you need medical attention during your stay. In general, we recommend VisitorsCoverage to travellers worldwide because it offers excellent value for money and well-rounded travel and medical benefits in its large catalogue of plans.

Health insurance doesn't cover normal holiday expenses, such as coverage for missed flights and hotels, but in case you run into medical trouble while abroad, it may cover some or all of your doctor or hospital expenses while overseas. However, not all health insurance providers and plans offer coverage to customers while abroad, and that's why it's generally best to take out travel insurance whenever you travel.

Although there's overlap, health and travel insurance are not exactly the same. Health insurance covers some or all of the cost of medical expenses (e.g. emergency treatment, doctor's visits, etc.) while travel insurance covers non-medical costs that are commonly associated with travelling (e.g. coverage for missed flights, stolen or lost personal belongings, etc.).

The cost of travel insurance depends on several factors, such as the length of the trip, the destination, the age of the traveller, and the level of coverage desired. On average, travel insurance can cost anywhere between 3% and 10% of the total cost of the trip.

A single-trip travel insurance policy covers a specific trip, while an annual one covers multiple trips taken within a one-year period. An annual policy may be more cost-effective for frequent travellers.

Yes, you can sometimes purchase travel insurance after starting your trip, but it is best to buy it before the trip begins to ensure maximum coverage. If you do need to buy insurance after you've started your trip, we recommend VisitorsCoverage , which offers a wide catalogue of online trip and medical insurance policies, most of which can be booked with immediate effect. Check out our guide to buying travel insurance late to learn more.

Yes, you can most certainly purchase travel insurance for a trip that has already been booked, although we recommend purchasing insurance as soon as possible aftwerwards to ensure all coverage is in place before your journey begins. Squaremouth’s Panama Travel Insurance Recommendations

For travelers visiting Panama, Squaremouth recommends a comprehensive insurance policy that covers Emergency Medical and Medical Evacuation benefits, as well as Trip Cancellation coverage. Travel Insurance is not required when traveling to Panama, however, many travelers want to protect their trip investment and protect themselves against high medical bills from illness or injury during their trip.

Travelers concerned with Covid-19 while traveling to Panama should purchase a policy with Covid-19 coverage. Most travel insurance providers on Squaremouth.com provide cancellation and medical benefits for contracting the Coronavirus. For all other Covid-related concerns and impacts on travel, including border closures, quarantine restrictions, and fear of contracting the virus, Squaremouth recommends a policy with the Cancel For Any Reason upgrade.

For those travelers who are concerned with needing medical coverage while traveling to Panama, Squaremouth recommends a policy that includes at least $50,000 in Emergency Medical coverage and $100,000 in Medical Evacuation coverage.

Emergency Medical coverage can provide reimbursement if a person becomes ill or injured during their trip. Most policies on Squaremouth.com can also provide coverage for a traveler who contracts Covid-19 and needs medical attention.

Medical Evacuation coverage can reimburse a traveler for expenses related to getting to the nearest adequate medical facility. In some cases, this coverage can also reimburse a traveler for expenses to get home under the guidance and recommendation of a physician.

For those who are traveling to remote areas of Panama or taking a cruise through the Panama Canal, medical treatment and evacuation can be more complicated and expensive. In these situations, Squaremouth recommends at least $100,000 in Emergency Medical coverage and $250,000 in Medical Evacuation coverage.

For travelers who have prepaid or non-refundable trip expenses, Squaremouth recommends Trip Cancellation coverage. This type of coverage can reimburse travelers for insured trip expenses in the event they have to cancel their trip for a covered reason. These reasons typically include unexpected illness or injury prior to departure, and also can include inclement weather, terrorism, and testing positive for Covid-19 prior to departure.

They ruled out the United States and when they considered warmer locations in Canada, they were out of budget. Mr. Miles worked for 30 years as a non-commissioned officer in the military before he retired. The couple lived on Mr. Miles’ government pension accumulated over the years.

After considering several locations, the Miles will be whiling away their days in Panama where the temperature stands around 30 degrees throughout the year and they won’t have to worry about shoveling snow.

The Miles is among the growing number of Canadians who decided to leave the snowy environment, look away from the United States and look for a place with a much warmer temperature. The couple chose Panama due to the chance it offers them to live the good live at a discount.

Whenever you venture to an exotic destination outside of your home country, it pays to be prepared. Even if you’ve never bought travel insurance before, investing in third-party coverage is a good idea, as you never know when you might need it. Before you contact your preferred travel insurance agency, check out our guide to travel insurance in Panama and make an informed decision about your coverage.

Specialized Medical Coverage

If you rely on Medicare for your prescription medications and hospital treatment, you should be aware that Medicare does not cover medical attention overseas. If you’re injured while on vacation in Panama, Medicare will not cover the cost of your treatment. Fortunately, over-the-counter medicine is easily purchased (even in specific quantities). It is advised that you bring the medication you take for preexisting medical conditions with you.

Should you wish to stay here longer than 30 days, you should consider investing in specialized third-party coverage. This is especially important if you have a preexisting medical condition, as certain ailments will not be covered by the free basic travel insurance package provided by the Panamanian government. Check with your provider to see if there are any limitations to your coverage based on preexisting conditions before you travel.

Expect bilingual, highly educated professionals.

The best vacations are the safest ones, and by investing in travel insurance before you depart, you can focus on what really matters – exploring this amazing country and experiencing everything it has to offer, rather than worrying about whether you’re covered in the event of an accident or delayed flight.

Fixed benefit travel insurance.

A fixed benefit or scheduled benefits travel insurance plan is the cheapest US travel insurance plan, however this is because the Fixed benefit travel insurance have a fixed limit of coverage for different medical benefits. Fixed benefit visitor insurance works well for small ailments but can be inadequate for more serious medical conditions involving hospitalisation.

Comprehensive travel insurance

Comprehensive travel insurance provide full coverage for medical expenses up to the policy medical maximum limit. As opposed to fixed benefit visitor insurance there are no coverage limits for each benefit. It is much more expensive when compared to fixed benefit plans but also provides significantly superior coverage especially in case of a serious medical emergency or hospitalisation.

Health Insurance in Panama for Foreigners

The best health insurance for expats in panama.

Panama City View of Downtown Skyscrapers with a cloudy sky in the background.

If you’re considering a move to Panama, one of the many things to think about is health insurance. Panama has a decent public healthcare system, which ranks 95th out of 191 countries in the world. It’s also extremely affordable. However, it has some major drawbacks for foreigners, who are often better off visiting Panama’s excellent private hospitals for care. These services are significantly more expensive, though still cheaper than healthcare in the United States. For this reason among others, we recommend foreigners use health insurance in Panama .

Panamanian Medical Insurance Options for Foreigners

Panama’s state health insurance program, through CSS, is available to foreigners if they pay into the program and have the right visa. This is basically government-run insurance, which you can be covered by if you have a work permit in Panama. MINSA’s public clinics are available to all, and you can pay as you go. A visit to a general practitioner may cost as little as USD$10, while a specialist may run closer to USD $50-$75. These clinics can be important to expats who choose to live in rural areas, where private hospitals are practically nonexistent.

Some local health insurance is available in Panama, in the form of local hospital coverage or HMOs. These programs allow you to pay a monthly or annual fee, either to have 70% of your expenses covered, or to receive discounts on your out-of-pocket care. You can also purchase plans once you are in the country. These plans tend to be gambles, however, if you have any pre-existing conditions or aren’t generally in good health. If you do go the local route, go directly to the insurance company rather than through a local broker, as brokers frequently charge exorbitant fees.

The best option for expats is international health insurance, purchased before you depart. With an international health insurance plan, you won’t have to worry about language barriers, excessive government paperwork or massive fees from local providers. You can design and select a plan that works especially for your needs, and that gets you the same quality of care you are used to. Since private hospitals in Panama are high quality and have many English-speaking healthcare workers, you’ll find your transition to care in Panama nearly seamless.

The Cost of Health Insurance in Panama for Foreigners

If you are traveling to Panama on a work permit and will be paying into the CSS, your employer will be required to enroll you in CSS — Panama’s national health insurance and retirement plan. Again, being covered by the public system is good and the public medical facilities are adequate, but you may experience long wait times for non-emergency care and a lack of the privacy and amenities you’re used to.

Panama Government Sponsored Health Insurance

The two largest private insurers in Panama are MAPFRE and Family Medical. Costs for coverage run from around $50/month to $125/month, depending on your age. These kinds of plans could work for you if you just want to keep insurance for potential emergencies and are in general good health. But you can’t count on good health forever, and local policies will only cover you in Panama, not in your home country or any third country you visit. Most local options don’t cover pre-existing conditions, make you wait years for outpatient surgery, and have a low maximum coverage.

Cost of Global Medical Plans for Expats in Panama

For more robust coverage, international health insurance is your best bet. The cost varies depending on your needs and how flexible you need the plan to be, but the average range for a global health insurance plan in Panama is USD$2,800-$5,700 per year. Such plans will cover you in Panama, in your home country, and in any other country you visit. You’ll have access to top-flight private hospitals with English-speaking doctors and affiliations with U.S. institutions like Johns Hopkins and the Cleveland Clinic. You’ll be able to choose a plan that suits your particular age, conditions and needs. And you won’t experience any gap in coverage if you purchase a plan before you leave your home country.

Can an American Get Health Insurance in Panama?

US citizens living in Panama can purchase the GeoBlue Xplorer plan which offers comprehensive worldwide coverage. It also provides access to the Blue Cross / Blue Shield network of doctors and hospitals in the USA. The GeoBlue Xplorer plan offers excellent customer service, up to 9 months of coverage in the USA, and fast claims processing, so you can rest assured you will be well taken care of.

Best Panama Health Insurance for Non-Residents

If you’re traveling to Panama from another country outside the United States, we recommend Cigna Global Health Insurance . Cigna provides international health insurance to nearly every country in the world, and lets you customize your plan to suit your needs.

Plans for Students at Panamanian Colleges and Universities

International students enrolled in colleges and universities or studying abroad in Panama need a quality plan at an affordable price. The following plans are designed specifically for international students. Most of the benefits on both plans are the same but one has more comprehensive coverage than the other in some areas (i.e. mental health). Similarly, one of them offers less comprehensive coverage in other areas (i.e. medical limits) to keep its cost lower.

Here are a couple of good private health insurance plans in Panama for international students.

GeoBlue Student Health Insurance

GeoBlue Student Medical Coverage

  • Worldwide medical coverage built for students and faculty in the U.S. and abroad.
  • Select from a range of deductibles and rates.
  • Choose providers either in or out of our elite network.

Travel Health Insurance for Short-Term Visitors to Panama

If you are traveling to Panama for a short stay, such as a vacation or a work trip that’s less than a month long, consider travel insurance . While expatriate insurance can serve as complete coverage while you are living in a foreign country, travel insurance fills in the gaps of your home coverage, so you can travel with peace of mind. Travel insurance can provide a network of covered medical providers in case you have an emergency while traveling in Panama. It can also cover unexpected travel interruptions or cancellations, so you can recoup costs if something goes wrong.

Panama is a beautiful and varied country, but it carries some dangers that your home country might not, like hurricanes, earthquakes, mosquito-borne illnesses and trafficking-related crime. For more information on keeping yourself safe in Panama, see our page on Safety Advice and Travel Insurance for Panama .

Global Medical Care in Panama

Panama’s health system has three parts. First, the government funds state healthcare through the Caja de Seguro Social (CSS) for its citizens who pay into it through payroll. For those who aren’t covered by CSS, the Ministerio de Salud (MINSA) provides low-cost clinics throughout the country. Finally, there are excellent private sector hospitals, some of which are affiliated with respected medical institutions in the United States.

Expats are likely to access care in all of these tiers at one point or another. If you’re living in a rural area, private facilities are simply not available. But for the most part, you’ll find care in the private system faster, more comfortable and of higher quality. For more details on how Panama’s healthcare system works, see our page below.

How to Find a Family Physician or GP in Panama

If you or someone in your family needs non-emergency care, the best place to start is with one of the private hospitals in the capital . Securing an appointment generally involves filling out a pre-admission form , which includes fields for your insurance information. The top hospital in Panama (and in all Latin America) is Pacifica Salud Hospital Punta Pacifica. It’s also the only Panama hospital with a website that’s available in English.

When you request an appointment, you should also talk to your insurance company to request pre-authorization. Otherwise, the hospital will likely ask you to pay in advance for your scheduled care.

For a closer look at the overall healthcare system in Panama and how to obtain care, see our Panama Healthcare System page .

How to Get Hospital Care in Panama

The process for obtaining inpatient care in Panama is similar to that for finding a doctor — go to the hospital website and fill out the form, then contact your insurance to request pre-authorization.

Private hospitals in Panama will usually ask that you pay out of pocket for your care, then submit the bills to your insurance company for reimbursement. For this reason it’s especially important to get pre-authorization to make sure you will be covered.

Panama Travel Guide FAQ

Below, find answers to frequently asked questions about traveling Panama .

Q: What are some good tourist sites in Panama?

Panama’s top attraction is, of course, the famous Panama Canal. Located between Panama City and Colon, this modern engineering marvel connects the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean.

It’s definitely worth taking some time to watch the ships pass through the canal if you’re visiting either city. Even if you’re not into engineering, you won’t want to miss this incredible sight.

If you’re a hiker or nature lover, you’ll definitely want to check out Boquete , a small village on Panama’s Pacific side. Boquete is truly home to some of the best hiking trails in the world !

Here, you can experience “The Land of Eternal Springtime,” where flowers are constantly in bloom and the temperatures stay around 70 degrees Fahrenheit year-round.

There are tons of trails in the area that will take you through rainforests and up close with volcanoes. You can also explore the area via zipline or raft!

And you’ll definitely want to get some beach time in while visiting Panama!

One place to do this is Bocas del Toro , a collection of islands off Panama’s northeastern coast. If just chilling on the beach sounds a little too boring, the islands are also perfect for diving, surfing, and so much more.

Q: Is Panama dangerous for tourists?

While there are risks involved in any trip to Panama, it’s very possible to safely travel through the country.

Crime rates are very high in Panama, particularly in cities like Panama City and Colon. Both violent crime and theft are common, so always be aware of your surroundings and avoid going out alone at night in these areas. Keep any valuables close and hidden away, particularly in markets.

Also, be sure to only use licensed taxis throughout the country.

Drug trafficking is common in Panama and local authorities take this issue very seriously. You can get arrested for having even a small amount of drugs on you or for traveling with someone in possession of drugs. Keep this in mind as you travel throughout the country.

Also, avoid the Darien Gap area near the Panamanian-Colombian border, the epicenter of the drug trafficking business in Panama. The amount of criminal activity in the area makes it incredibly dangerous, particularly for travelers.

Q: What do I need to know before traveling to Panama?

While not required, travelers visiting Colon and areas east of the Panama Canal may want to get a Yellow Fever vaccine, as the disease is prevalent in these areas.

If you’re traveling from, or recently traveled to, a country with a high prevalence of Yellow Fever, you may need to provide proof of vaccination before entering the country.

Typhoid vaccines are also recommended if you are visiting smaller cities and more rural areas. Check with your country’s health department for full vaccine recommendations.

While Panama is fairly inexpensive for travelers compared to other parts of the world, it is one of the more expensive countries in Central and South America. You’ll be able to get some great deals while you’re in the country, but you may need to budget a bit more than you would for, say, Honduras , Guatemala , or Nicaragua .

English is also not widely spoken in Panama, so it’s a good idea to learn a few Spanish words and phrases before you go in order to communicate with the locals. Luckily, Spanish is typically one of the easiest languages to learn for English speakers .

Q: Is it safe to travel in Panama City?

Panama City has grown into a bustling metropolis and is generally pretty safe for travelers. That said, crime rates are still high in the city, so it’s important to keep your guard up and any valuables out of sight to avoid pickpockets .

The parts of the city that are most popular with tourists are also popular with pickpockets, so use common sense and stay vigilant when out sightseeing.

Finaly, try to avoid neighborhoods that are known to be dangerous, like El Chorillo, Santa Ana, and San Miguel.

Q: Do I need a Panama travel visa?

Citizens of the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, and several other countries do not need a visa to visit Panama for less than six months. Citizens of other countries may require a visa to enter the country, but visa waivers are available in some cases.

It’s recommended to view your country’s Panama International Travel Information page for the most up-to-date information on entry and exit requirements. You can also contact the Embassy of Panama.

Q: How many days should I spend in Panama City?

There are so many things to do in Panama , especially in Panama City. At the very least, you’ll want to allow three days to visit the Panama Canal (including the Miraflores Visitor Center), wander Casco Viejo, explore the ruins of Panamá Viejo (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), enjoy nature through Metropolitan Natural Park and Ancon Hill, and wander the various neighborhoods.

Remember, too, that there are numerous day trips and weekend trips to enjoy from Panama City, like the San Blas Islands, Monkey Island, Chagres National Park, the Pearl Islands, and Taboga Island.

You’ll really want to allot extra time for these local getaways.

Q: Are credit cards accepted in Panama?

Major credit cards are accepted around Panama — particularly Visa and MasterCard — though it’s recommended to carry cash for smaller establishments.

Additionally, you’ll want cash when visiting remote parts of the country.

Q: What is the best time to visit Panama?

While Panama is a year-round destination, most tourists like to avoid the rainy season and instead visit during the dry season between January and mid-April.

Q: What months are summer in Panama?

Summer in Panama runs from about December to April.

Q: Can you drink tap water in Panama?

You can drink tap water in many places in Panama, though not Bocas del Toro or the Comarca de Guna Yala.

On my trip, I drank the tap water in Boquete, El Valle de Anton , and Panama City and thought it was very tasty.

Q: What is the hottest month in Panama?

The warmest month in Panama is typically April.

Q: What is the local currency in Panama?

The local currency in Panama is the Panamanian balboa.

18 things to know before traveling to Panama

We've got the lowdown on everything you need to know before visiting Panama © Westend61 / Getty Images

If you're looking for idyllic islands, rolling surf, untamed nature and showstopping wildlife,  Panama  is an ideal destination. It sits at the crossroads of the Americas, connecting two oceans, and beyond its cosmopolitan capital and legendary canal , Panama is a biodiversity hotspot. Did you also know it produces some of the world's  finest – and most expensive – coffee?

Here is the top things to know before you go to Panama.

1. Book ahead if you want to join a fiesta

Panamanians love to party, and barely a week goes by without a fiesta, from La Feria de las Flores y del Café in Boquete to the countrywide Carnaval, whose largest and loudest celebrations are in Las Tablas on the Península de Azuero .

There’s also Easter, Christmas and New Year’s. November’s numerous independence-related festivals see shops and offices closed and locals flocking to the beach. Hotel prices often double around public holidays and can be booked out weeks in advance.

2. Pack for the season: dry or wet

The country’s tropical climate means two seasons – hot and dry from December to April and hot and wet the rest of the year. Although the amount of rain depends on what coast you’re on, downpours usually come in short, sharp afternoon bursts before the sun forces you to put your Panama hat back on.

Pack high-factor sunscreen and hot-weather clothes, but carry something for the icy air-conditioning and high altitudes. Pack sturdy boots if you’re planning any hardcore hikes.

3. Carry the right amount of currency

The Panamanian Balboa may be the country’s official currency, but the bills in use are US dollars. Prices are listed in $ or B/, but both currencies have the same value.

Carry small bills for tipping, markets and rural areas, and enough cash in case the ATM doesn’t work (or there are no ATMs at all like in the Archipiélago de San Blas of the Comarca de Guna Yala ).

4. You can’t reach Colombia by road

If you’re thinking of road-tripping south to Colombia , think again. The infamous Darién Gap – the land link between Central and South America – is a mash-up of impenetrable jungle, primordial swamps, poisonous snakes and dubious characters, and there’s no road crossing.

But if you plan to head north to Costa Rica and beyond, several long-distance bus lines, such as Tica Bus, cover Central America.

A group of travelers look over tables filled with souvenirs at an outdoor market in Panama City, Panama.

5. Know a few keys phrases (and what not to say)

English is widely spoken, especially in Panama City and Boquete, but mastering a few basic Spanish phrases will endear you to the locals and help if you travel away from the tourist hotspots.

Panama may be laid back, but it’s important to be polite. Always greet people – buenas is a catch-all term for hello – and don’t forget to say please ( por favor ) and thank you ( gracias ). Listen out for one-of-a-kind Panamanian phrases, such as que sopa? (what’s up?), buco (a lot), and pinta fria (cold beer).

It's best to avoid subjects involving politics, religion, the Panama Canal and the Panama Papers out of respect to Panamanian residents.

6. Learn to be more tranquil

Panama moves at a relaxed pace, including in the city, so don’t expect lightning-fast responses to requests. As in most of Central America, punctuality is a loose concept, and service in restaurants can be leisurely – meals are meant to be enjoyed and can stretch over several hours – so it's wise to adjust to the gentle flow of life here. Slow down and relax when you arrive in Panama.

7. The capital has its own dress code

Panamanians dress casually as a rule but tend to be a bit formal in the capital. You don’t have to wear suits or high heels, but the faded T-shirts, short shorts and flip-flops that were fine in Bocas del Toro will look out of place in the city. Also: shirtless men are an absolute no-no.

8. Confirm the fare before taking a cab

Panama’s yellow licensed taxis can be a wallet-friendly way to get around but don’t forget to negotiate a fare before you set off. Taxis aren’t metered, official rates are usually ignored, and tourists are typically overcharged. Ask a local for an idea of a taxi fare cost in advance.

Uber and Lyft are also available in Panama City (although drivers are often willing to go cross-country), along with UberEnglish for non-Spanish speakers and UberAssist for people with mobility issues.

9. When should you tip, and how much?

Tips aren’t compulsory, but they are welcome. In pricier restaurants, if it’s not already been added onto your bill, leave a 10% gratuity. Taxi drivers don’t expect a tip, but you can round up a fare, and if someone helps you with your luggage, give them around $1 to $2.

10. Respect smoke-free zones

Smoking is prohibited in all indoor public spaces, hotel rooms, workplaces, public transport, outdoor dining spaces and sports venues. You can face a fine if you’re caught smoking in a non-designated area. The same goes for vaping. It’s illegal to import and sell e-cigarettes.

11. Bring repellent to avoid mosquito bites

Not only are mosquito bites itchy, but they can also spread diseases such as dengue fever, so use a heavyweight bug spray, especially if you’re heading to the jungle.

12. Can I drink the water?

With a combo of heat and humidity, it’s important to keep hydrated, particularly if you plan to get active. Tap water is normally safe to drink, especially in cities, but if you’re going off the beaten track, avoid plastic pollution and invest in a water-filter bottle, which you can fill up from any water source.

13. Stay safe in the city

Panama is one of the safest countries in Central America, but it always pays to take a few precautions. Pickpocketing is common in crowded areas of Panama City, including bus stations, markets and shopping areas, so keep your valuables safe.

As in any big city, steer clear of poorly lit streets or wandering around new neighborhoods alone after dark. Avoid carrying all your credit cards at once – or wads of cash – and if you need an ATM, try to use one inside a bank during the day.

Report a crime by dialing 511 9260 (the Tourist Police in Panama City) or 104 (National Police), and keep the number of your embassy handy.

14. In case of a medical emergency

If you need emergency medical assistance, dial 911 for an ambulance. Panama City has good hospitals and clinics, but facilities are more limited outside the capital.

Make sure you have adequate travel insurance and read the fine print before you depart.

15. Keep an eye on the weather

Before you take the plunge on Panama’s two coastlines, check for strong currents or riptides. Inland, heavy rains can cause flash flooding and landslides – October and November are usually the wettest months – so check the weather forecast and follow local advice before hitting the hiking trails, especially if you're going without a local guide.

A sloth hangs in a tree in a forested area in Panama

16. Be wary when interacting with wildlife

While the risk is low, keep your eye out for venomous snakes, such as the fearsome fer-de-lance, while trekking along jungle trails, and avoid swimming in rivers unless you know they’re crocodile-free.

17. Always carry a copy of your ID

Foreign visitors are asked to carry their passports at all times, and the police sometimes check, but it’s safer to carry a photocopy or photo of the opening pages and entry stamp and leave the real thing somewhere secure.

18. Steer clear of drugs

Panama takes its drug laws very seriously. Getting caught with a small amount of illegal drugs, or even being with someone who is using drugs or has them in their possession, is grounds for arrest and can lead to a heavy fine or a harsh prison sentence.

  • Travel insurance is intended to cover risks and financial losses associated with traveling.
  • Coverage can include trip cancellation, baggage protection, medical care, and emergency evacuation.
  • When filing a claim, be specific and comprehensive in your documentation to ease the process.

Whether it's a trip across the world or a trip across the state, having travel insurance provides major relief if things go awry. Flight delays, lost baggage, illness, injuries, and other unforeseen events can disrupt even the best-laid plans. With a major disruption comes the potential for unanticipated expenses.

Travel insurance and the coverage it offers can help keep you protected and save you money in the long run.

Overview of Travel Insurance Coverage

Travel insurance policies protect travelers from financial losses should something go wrong during their trip. You can customize which coverages you want to include, and there are several to choose from.

"Common types of coverage include trip cancellation, trip interruption, baggage protection, coverage for medical care if you get sick or hurt during your trip, and emergency medical evacuation," says Angela Borden, a travel insurance expert and product strategist for travel insurance company Seven Corners.

Travel insurance plans offer nonrefundable payments and other trip-related expenses. While monetary compensation is a primary benefit, there is another valuable perk of travel insurance. It can provide peace of mind.

What does travel insurance cover?

Your specific travel insurance plan (and its terms and conditions) will determine the minutia and specifics of what is covered. As with most other forms of insurance, a general rule of thumb is the more you spend, the better your coverage.

"Travel insurance can be confusing, so it's best to research a reputable company that specializes in travel insurance and has a long history of successfully helping travelers all over the world," says Borden.

Trip cancellation and interruptions

A travel insurance policy can reimburse you for a prepaid, nonrefundable trip if it is canceled for a covered event, such as a natural disaster or a global pandemic.

Trip interruption insurance covers you if you're already on your trip and you get sick, there's a natural disaster, or something else happens. Make sure to check with your travel insurance providers to discuss any inclusions, coverage, and more.

Travel delays and missed connections

Travel delay insurance coverage provides reimbursement for any expenses you incur when you experience a delay in transit over a minimum time. Reimbursements can include hotels, airfare, food, and other related expenses.

Medical emergencies and evacuations

Typically, US healthcare plans are not accepted in other countries. So travel insurance with medical coverage can be particularly beneficial when you are abroad. Medical coverage can also help with locating doctors and healthcare facilities.

Medical transportation coverage will also pay for emergency evacuation expenses such as airlifts and medically-equipped flights back to the US. Out of pocket, these expenses can easily amount to tens of thousands of dollars. Certain plans may even transport you to a hospital of choice for care.

Travel insurance generally does not include coverage for pre-existing conditions. That said, you can obtain a pre-existing condition waiver, which we will talk about later.

Baggage and personal belongings

Most airlines will reimburse travelers for lost or destroyed baggage, but be prepared for limitations. Travel insurance plans will typically cover stolen items, such as those stolen out of a hotel room. This may not include expensive jewelry, antiques, or heirloom items. Typically, airlines have a few days to recover your bag.

In the meantime, you can make a claim to pay for items like certain toiletries and other items you need to pick up. If your bag is truly lost or you don't get it for an extended period, you can file a true lost baggage claim.

What does credit card travel insurance cover?

A major perk on several travel credit cards is embedded credit card travel insurance . Typically, you will need to use the specific card for the transaction (at least with partial payment) for travel coverage to kick in.

Each card has specific rules on what exactly is covered. But one of the industry leaders is the $550-per-year Chase Sapphire Reserve credit card. Here's a snapshot of what is covered with this specific card:

  • Baggage delay: up to $100 reimbursed per day for up to five days if a passenger carrier delays your baggage by more than six hours.
  • Lost and damaged baggage: up to $3,000 per passenger per trip, but only up to $500 per passenger for jewelry and watches and up to $500 per passenger for cameras and other electronic equipment.
  • Trip delay reimbursement: up to $500 per ticket if you're delayed more than six hours or require an overnight stay.
  • Trip cancellation and interruption protection: up to $10,000 per person and $20,000 per trip for prepaid, nonrefundable travel expenses.
  • Medical evacuation benefit: up to $100,000 for necessary emergency evacuation and transportation when on a trip of five to 60 days and traveling more than 100 miles from home.
  • Travel accident insurance: accidental death or dismemberment coverage of up to $100,000 (up to $1,000,000 for common carrier travel).
  • Emergency medical and dental benefits: up to $2,500 for medical expenses (subject to a $50 deductible) when on a trip arranged by a travel agency and traveling more than 100 miles from home.
  • Rental car coverage: primary coverage for damages caused by theft or collision up to $75,000 on rentals of 31 days or fewer

More protections are included with cards with an annual fee, but there are exceptions. The no-annual-fee Chase Freedom Flex , for instance, includes up to $1,500 per person (and up to $6,000 per trip) in trip cancellation and trip interruption coverage.

However, there are some differences between credit card travel coverage and obtaining coverage from a third party.

"Credit card coverage does not typically provide travel medical benefits," Borden says. "For protection if you get sick or hurt while traveling, you'll want a travel insurance plan with medical coverage."

Whether you get your travel insurance in a standalone policy or through a credit card, it's important to review your plan details carefully. In either case, there may be exclusions and other requirements such as deadlines when filing a claim, Borden notes.

What travel insurance coverage do you need to pay more for?

Knowing what travel insurance doesn't cover is as important as knowing what it does cover.

"Travelers should understand that travel insurance benefits come into play only if a covered reason occurs," Borden says. Most standard travel insurance plans won't reimburse you for the following:

Cancel for any reason (CFAR)

Cancel-for-any-reason travel insurance covers a trip cancellation for any reason, not just a covered event. your standard benefits won't kick in unless it's a covered event. For instance, you'll be reimbursed simply for changing your mind about taking a trip.

That said, CFAR travel insurance is not without its downsides. For one, it's more expensive than traditional insurance, and most CFAR policies will only reimburse you for a percentage of your travel expenses. Additionally, CFAR policies aren't available for annual travel insurance .

You can find our guide on the best CFAR travel insurance here.

Foreseen weather events

Sudden storms or unforeseen weather events are typically covered by standard travel insurance plans. There are exceptions to be aware of. For example, an anticipated and named hurricane will not be covered.

Medical tourism

If you're going to travel internationally for a medical procedure or doctor's visit, your travel insurance plan will not cover the procedure itself. Most medical travel plans also won't cover you if something goes wrong with your procedure.

Pre-existing conditions and pregnancy

Those with specific pre-existing conditions, such as someone with diabetes and needing more insulin, will not be covered by most plans. In addition, pregnancy-related expenses will likely not be covered under most plans.

That said, you can obtain a pre-existing condition waiver for stable conditions. In order to obtain a wavier, you will need to purchase travel insurance within a certain time frame from when you booked your trip, usually two to three weeks, depending on your policy.

Extreme sports and activities

Accidents occurring while participating in extreme sports like skydiving and paragliding will typically not be covered under most plans. However, many plans offer the ability to upgrade to a higher-priced version with extended coverage.

Navigating claims and assistance

When a trip goes awry, the first thing you should do is document everything and be as specific as possible with documentation. This will make the claims process easier, as you can substantiate and quantify your financial losses due to the delay.

For example, your flight home has been delayed long enough to be covered under your policy, you'll want to keep any receipts from purchases made while waiting. For instances where your luggage is lost, you will need to file a report with local authorities and document all the items you packed.

Cancellation protection also requires meticulous attention to detail. If you're too sick to fly, you may need to see a doctor to prove your eligibility. If an airline cancels a flight, you'll also need to document any refunds you received as travel insurance isn't going to reimburse you for money you've already gotten back.

Part of the benefit of CFAR insurance is the reduced paperwork necessary to file a claim. You'll still need to document your nonrefundable losses, but you won't have to substantiate why you're canceling a trip.

Choosing the right travel insurance

Each plan should be personalized to meet the insured party's needs. Some travelers prefer to stick to the bare minimum (flight cancellation benefits through the airline). Others want a comprehensive plan with every coverage possible. Before you buy anything, set your destination. Are there any travel restrictions or changes pending? Does your destination country require emergency or other medical coverage?

If the destination airport is known for lost or delayed luggage, travelers should keep important items in carry-ons. Lost or delayed luggage coverage protects insured parties in the event of a significant delay or total loss.

Second, check current credit card travel benefits to avoid redundancies. Savvy travelers don't need to pay for the same coverage twice.

Finally, consider your individual needs. Do you have a chronic medical condition, or do you feel safe with emergency-only medical coverage? Keep in mind, this does not include coverage for cosmetic surgery or other medical tourism. Do you have a budget limit for travel insurance? Asking and answering these important questions will help every traveler find the right product.

Most travel insurance plans are simple, and Business Insider's guide to the best travel insurance companies outlines our top picks. Remember, read your policy and its specifics closely to ensure it includes the items you need coverage for.

No one likes to dwell on how a trip might not go as planned before even leaving. However, at its core, travel insurance provides peace of mind as you go about your trip. While the upfront cost may seem significant, when you compare it to the potential expenses of a canceled flight, emergency evacuation, or a hefty medical bill, it's a small price to pay in the grand scheme of things.

  • The ship that crashed into the Francis Scott Key Bridge on Tuesday was the Singapore-flagged Dali.
  • The container ship had been chartered by Maersk, the Danish shipping company.
  • Two people were recovered from the water but six remain missing, authorities said.

Insider Today

A container ship crashed into a major bridge in Baltimore early Tuesday, causing its collapse into the Patapsco River.

A livestream showed vehicles traveling on the Francis Scott Key Bridge just moments before the impact at 1:28 a.m. ET.

Baltimore first responders called the situation a "developing mass casualty event" and a "dire emergency," per The Associated Press.

James Wallace, chief of the Baltimore Fire Department, said in a press conference that two people had been recovered from the water.

One was uninjured, but the other was transported to a local trauma center in a "very serious condition."

Wallace said up to 20 people were thought to have fallen into the river and some six people were still missing.

Richard Worley, Baltimore's police chief, said there was "no indication" the collision was purposeful or an act of terrorism.

Wes Moore, the governor of Maryland, declared a state of emergency around 6 a.m. ET. He said his office was in close communication with Pete Buttigieg, the transportation secretary.

"We are working with an interagency team to quickly deploy federal resources from the Biden Administration," Moore added.

Understanding why the bridge collapsed could have implications for safety, in both the shipping and civil engineering sectors.

The container ship is the Singapore-flagged Dali, which is about 984 feet long, and 157 feet wide, per a listing on VesselFinder.

An unclassified Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency report said that the ship "lost propulsion" as it was leaving port, ABC News reported.

The crew notified officials that they had lost control and warned of a possible collision, the report said, per the outlet.

The Dali's owner is listed as Grace Ocean, a Singapore-based firm, and its manager is listed as Synergy Marine, which is also headquartered in Singapore.

Shipping news outlet TradeWinds reported that Grace Ocean confirmed the Dali was involved in the collapse, but is still determining what caused the crash.

Related stories

Staff for Grace Ocean declined to comment on the collision when contacted by Business Insider.

"All crew members, including the two pilots have been accounted for and there are no reports of any injuries. There has also been no pollution," Synergy Marine said in a statement.

The company did not respond to a request for further comment from BI.

'Horrified'

Maersk chartered the Dali, with a schedule for the ship on its website.

"We are horrified by what has happened in Baltimore, and our thoughts are with all of those affected," the Danish shipping company said in a statement.

Maersk added: "We are closely following the investigations conducted by authorities and Synergy, and we will do our utmost to keep our customers informed."

Per ship tracking data, the Dali left Baltimore on its way to Colombo, the capital of Sri Lanka, at around 1 a.m., about half an hour before the crash.

The Port of Baltimore is thought to be the largest in the US for roll-on/roll-off ships carrying trucks and trailers.

Barbara Rossi, associate professor of engineering science at the University of Oxford, told BI the force of the impact on one of the bridge's supporting structures "must have been immense" to lead to the collapse.

Dr Salvatore Mercogliano, a shipping analyst and maritime historian at Campbell University, told BI: "It appears Dali left the channel while outbound. She would have been under the control of the ship's master with a Chesapeake Bay pilot onboard to advise the master.

"The deviation out of the channel is probably due to a mechanical issue as the ship had just departed the port, but you cannot rule out human error as that was the cause of the Ever Forward in 2022 just outside of Baltimore."

He was referring to the incident two years ago when the container ship became grounded for a month in Chesapeake Bay after loading up cargo at the Port of Baltimore.

The US Coast Guard found the incident was caused by pilot error, cellphone use, and "inadequate bridge resource management."

Claudia Norrgren, from the maritime research firm Veson Nautical, told BI: "The industry bodies who are here to protect against incidents like this, such as the vessel's flag state, classification society, and regulatory bodies, will step in and conduct a formal investigation into the incident. Until then, it'll be very hard for anyone to truly know what happened on board."

This may not have been the first time the Dali hit a structure.

In 2016, maritime blogs such as Shipwreck Log and ship-tracking site VesselFinder posted videos of what appears to be the stern of the same, blue-hulled container vessel scraping against a quay in Antwerp.

A representative for the Port of Antwerp told BI the Dali did collide with a quay there eight years ago but couldn't "give any information about the cause of the accident."

The Dali is listed as being built in 2015 by Hyundai Heavy Industries in South Korea.
