Pedal-car auction drama German Club member Walter Huppmann recounts the story of how he bought an E-type for his grandson with a little help from the Club

After being a proud grandfather since the end of November 2023, the idea of looking for a stylish means of transport for my grandson came to my mind. Specifically, I was thinking of a pedal car – he is too young to drive a real car – ideally with the look of an E-type. I wanted to get my grandson excited about this beautiful style icon at a very early stage and thus lay the foundations for what I hope will be a passion for classic vehicles in the future...

...Much to my surprise, I finally found what I was looking for on eBay in February 2024 – a ‘junior’ E-type OOS (Open One-Seater), an early Tri-ang Series 1, was offered for sale...

...it was with great joy that I immediately contacted Cip from P&K Thornton Restorations. Cip was immediately enthusiastic about my idea of buying an E-type for my grandson, and with that in mind he immediately offered me his support by saying that if I could actually buy the pedal car at auction, he would take care of the collection and the subsequent interim storage. Excited and relieved by Cip’s commitment to help, I thought I could look forward to bidding towards the end of the auction the next day with peace of mind...

...Sadly not! My assessment of the situation turned out to be over-optimistic,..

Bonhams sells two E-types at Amelia Island Auction

At the Fernandina Beach Golf Club Amelia Island Auction, Florida, on 29 February, two E-types were sold.

The first, a 1965 Series 1 3.8-litre FHC, was recently discovered following 46 years of continuous ownership, and was sold as a prime candidate for refurbishment, or to preserve and enjoy following mechanical renovation.

The car was sold fitted with its original Blaupunkt radio and steering wheel, and the Heritage Certificate confirms the original matching numbers cylinder block and heads. The engine turned by hand, but required servicing to become roadworthy. The car sold for US$56,000.

The second car was a 1968 Series 1½ 4.2-litre OTS, which left Browns Lane...

Driving JLR Classic's factory-restored Jaguar Reborn E-Type

Why a 'reborn' jag from 60 years ago might be a better way to spend $400,000 today.

jaguar type e tour auto

COVENTRY, England – Moviegoers of a certain age will likely draw an association between the flag-emblazoned E-type “Shaguar” driven by Austin Powers and the car’s image as an icon of Swinging-Sixties cool. For sure, the Brits cling to this era, recalling a time when everyone from The Beatles to the nation’s car manufacturers were successfully exporting English swagger to the world.

As the 60th anniversary of the E-type’s first appearance in 1961 approaches, attention is again focused on this golden age for British automotive engineering and Jaguar ’s increasingly industrialized approach to leveraging its heritage. That takes the form of an impressive modern facility on the outskirts of the brand’s hometown, where classic Land Rover , Range Rover and Jaguar vehicles are “Reborn” in nut-and-bolt factory restorations. This isn’t a few old hands turning spanners in a dusty corner of the main factory — instead customers can go direct to Jaguar Land Rover Classic Works , order the Reborn vehicle of their dreams and sit patiently for the spectacular return on their considerable investment.

In the case of the Reborn E-type driven here, that starts at around $400,000, though that figure can rise considerably if you’re fussy about the vintage of the original car and want one based on a more sought-after early model. For the real fanboys Jaguar is even offering Drivsix matched pairs of restored E-type 60 Editions to celebrate the coupe and roadster that were famously driven direct from the factory to the Geneva unveiling just in time for Jaguar founder Sir William Lyons to reveal it to the world. That even Enzo Ferrari was moved to acknowledge its beauty adds to the romance of that moment, and explains why Jaguar is so keen to celebrate it.

jaguar type e tour auto

But can the Reborn E-type do justice to such myth and legend? And is factory original really preferable to the restomods built by independents like Eagle ? Wheel time in a gorgeous Reborn 1965 4.2 Fixed-Head Coupe on an authentically grey and overcast English day is my chance to find out.

The E-type may have earned Enzo’s respect for its looks but, ever the wily engineer, he will likely have been paying closer scrutiny to what was under those slinky panels. Jaguar had demonstrated it could beat the world’s best in sports car racing with multiple Le Mans wins in the 1950s. As the new decade dawned, it looked to have ambitions to do the same in showrooms with a product that made Maranello’s finest seem like old tech.

Look at it this way: At the time, Ferrari was selling coachbuilt coupes based on spaceframes and running leaf-sprung live axles at the rear. Sure, the engines were exquisite, but for a fraction of the price the E-type offered a steel monocoque, an independent suspension and disc brakes all around, rack-and-pinion steering and equivalent power from a six-cylinder engine. No wonder it got his attention.

jaguar type e tour auto

Those foundations still make the E-type relevant today. I’m driving it on the same English backroads on which it was developed 60 years ago, likely in similar conditions. The shiny facility where the cars are restored may be of the modern age but, within a few hundred yards, the roads are exactly as they were back then. Narrow and bumpy, they twist and turn between hedgerows, testing steering, suspension and brakes in a way that informs Jaguar products to this day.

Those of a 21st-century physique may find the door aperture of the E-type coupe a bit of a squeeze but, once inside, it fits like a glove, with plenty of headroom and space in the footwell to ensure you’re not hitting all three pedals at once. The wood-rimmed steering wheel sits close to your chest, the four-speed shift lever is a hand-span away and the view down the long hood sets hairs to attention before the engine even fires.

When it does, the sound is as gorgeous as the looks. The twin-cam XK engine is the beating heart of generations of Jaguars and as much an icon of the brand as the famous “leaper.” Breathing through three giant carbs and dual exhausts exiting under the rear bumper, it responds instantly to the throttle with a sophisticated growl. Sure, Jaguar made an electric E-type as a demo. But if that’s what you want, go buy an I-Pace .

jaguar type e tour auto

This one is a later 4.2-liter, which has comparable horsepower to the 3.8 but gets 283 pound-feet of torque to the smaller engine’s 260, for a more relaxed power delivery. Everything from the synchromesh gearbox to the reassuring brake feel, positive steering and balanced suspension set-up inspire confidence in the first few hundred yards. It’s clear this car has been reborn for people willing to drive, not just admire. For sure, allowances have to be made for the lack of safety aids or crash protection should the worst happen. But few cars of this vintage feel so well equipped to drive at a modern pace, or so easy to get into the groove with. Your $400,000 could buy you any one of the current crop of 200-mph supercars . But on real roads, at real speeds, you get to enjoy more of a return on that investment in a classic like this.

If you like the sound of that, then Jaguar Classic is waiting to hear from you. The current Reborn program is based on the original Series I cars, rather than the Series II and Series III that U.S. buyers enjoyed as the XK-E. But given these are arguably the prettiest and purest of the line, that’s no problem. And if your checkbook can open wide enough, the guys in the workshop will entertain whatever restoration project your heart desires. Even an Austin Powers-inspired Shaguar livery? “No reason why not,” laughs the man from Jaguar Classic.

ECD Auto Design Jaguar E-Type Review: The Jag of Your Dreams, for a Price

ECD’s Land Rover Defender upgrade experts turn their attention to updating Britain’s iconic sports car.

ecd jaguar e type

By Tyler Duffy

ECD Auto Design , formerly East Coast Defender, is the name brand for Land Rover Defender resto-mods. But the name change (and an upcoming public offering ) reflect a broader ambition for the company, expanding their treatment to vehicles outside the Land Rover family. The first of those vehicles — still keeping it very much old-school, British and iconic — is the Jaguar E-Type .

ECD just completed its first E-Type build, the Project Dallas commission. I was lucky enough to take it for a spin while visiting their factory outside Orlando, Florida; here’s what I discovered.

The ECD Auto Design Jaguar E-Type: What We Think

If you love E-Type Jaguars (and have nigh-infinite funding), it’s hard to conceive of a better overall experience than building one with ECD Auto Design. You get a unique opportunity to truly customize your dream car. And the end product retains the charm of the original vehicle while providing enough upgrades to make it more liveable and reliable in a modern context. An ECD E-Type is not a practical purchase. But this buyer does not need to concern themselves with practicalities.

Personally, I’d opt for a low-key Range Rover Classic from ECD in Loire Blue with an electric powertrain over the E-Type. But the beauty of having enough money to have ECD Auto Design build you a car … is that you likely have a garage that can accommodate multiple ECD builds.

ecd jaguar from rear third quarter angle

Custom means custom

So, ECD has an online configurator , and I ran through its E-Type build process with the ECD staff to build “Project Gear Patrol.” But that’s really the jumping-off point for what ECD can do. One client flew out to match paint samples to a handbag. Another requested five different types of animal hides in the interior. You can tailor things like the length of the instrument stalks. Essentially, if it doesn’t result in an unsafe vehicle, it can be done. And getting to do that, instead of leaving it to Ferrari or Aston Martin , is an inherent part of the experience.

Customers typically approach this freedom in two basic directions. Many keep things very traditional. I was in that camp with my British Racing Green, camel leather interior and vintage wheels combo (though I kicked myself for not choosing black with a red interior after seeing it on a vintage model in ECD’s shop). Other customers are less constrained by tradition and let their tastes run wild (say, by swapping the chrome for blacked-out detailing).

ECD says they expected E-Type buyers to run more traditionalist and do less pimping out than their Defender customers. That said, they also say they’ve been surprised by the variety of E-Type orders that have come in.

framed portrait and car model of the e type jaguar

But the ECD E-Type is still a 50-year-old Jag

Old British roadsters weren’t designed with modern American roads, comfort standards or even body types in mind. ECD’s go-to E-Type is the Series 3 model built from 1971 to 1973 (the 1974 ones have weird bumpers). These have bigger engine bays to accommodate the upgrade from a V6 to a V12 and dramatically bigger cabins with wider doors. But even with that added space, there’s only so much you can do within that footprint. It will still feel tight, wonky and a lot like a vintage British car.

The E-Type doesn’t have the easiest cabin to climb into — even with the wider doors. And even with my 5’11” frame there’s not a ton of space. The pedal placement is farther left than you’d anticipate. The E-Type mirrors are flimsy and not really that helpful by modern standards (I reverted to looking over my shoulder). The top of the windshield is shorter than you’d expect. Though ECD does include updates like heated seats and an upgraded sound system.

ecd jaguar e type interior

ECD’s driving experience strives for balance

ECD offers three engine options on the Series 3 E-Type. The prototype I drove had the LT1 Corvette engine that puts out 450 horsepower, connected to an eight-speed automatic. The GM crate engines are sort of the bread-and-butter option from ECD: rock solid, plug-and-play and easy to repair and service. But you can also order an E-Type with a tuned-up Jag V12 or an electric powertrain; those were being built while I was in the shop.

ECD let me take the Project Dallas car on a quick 20-minute loop, with an ECD representative in the passenger seat. It was enough to get the flavor of the car, though heavily-trafficked, flat and straight Orlando roads aren’t the optimal environment to test a performance.

The word that kept coming to mind as I sampled the E-Type (and a couple of ECD Auto Design’s Defender builds) was balance . ECD doesn’t iron out the flaws of driving an older British car; they are part of the charm. But their builds soften them and make the car far more manageable and daily driveable on modern American roads.

The E-Type sort of reminded me of my parents’ old R107 Mercedes-Benz SL . It’s a little boat-like and requires you to carefully swing that big, V12-accommodating front around. But with power steering, you don’t feel like you’re muscling it. ECD found the sweet spot between the car having some play compared to a stiff, dialed-in modern sports car but not feeling as sloppy or quirky as one would anticipate.

The ride quality with the upgraded suspension was excellent. The 450-horsepower LT1 gives the car substantial oomph for getting around town. And the tester had the OEM-style quad exhaust system, which still offered a little bit of Jaguar growl … even if the source was a GM V8. Though in this guise, the car is far more weekend cruiser than tire shredder.

ECD staffers think the electric E-Type will be sporty, with its instant torque and lighter weight. And there is internal interest in building an E-Type with the 650-horsepower LT4 GM V8, though that’s not on offer yet.

Ordering an ECD E-Type isn’t cheap

ECD staffers alluded to a long list of noteworthy clients, athletes and celebrities, including some so noteworthy their identities could not be revealed by the intermediaries buying the vehicle. And with the price point, having such an exclusive clientele isn’t too surprising.

E-Types require more meticulous restoration work than the Defenders, which bumps the starting price for a build up to $289,995 — more expensive than the most expensive Porsche 911 . And realistically, that number is very much the starting price. Typical customizations and upgrades can drive that price closer to $400,000. In short, this isn’t something a normal — or even a normally well-off — person can do.

What are some ECD E-Type alternatives?

There are a ton of classic car resto-modders out there. If you’re looking for an exquisitely-restored Jaguar E-Type, the closest alternative may be from Jaguar themselves, with their Jaguar Classic E-Type Reborn program . Those will probably be even more expensive than the ECD E-Type. And they will also be aimed more at the Series 1 and Series 2 models, producing more faithful (though still updated) factory recreations.

First drive in the electric Jaguar E-Type from ECD Automotive Design: A welcomed upgrade

Avatar for Scooter Doll

Just over a year after my last visit, I recently got the chance to visit my friends at ECD Automotive Design down in central Florida and take their latest EV conversion – the all-electric Jaguar E-Type for a spin. As always, there were tons of new and exciting happenings at ECD, as it continues to learn, grow, and delve further into electrification.

If you haven’t heard of ECD Automotive Design, you should look it up. It’s arguably one of the best one-of-one vehicle builders in the industry and continues to grow its customer base because of the quality, service, and level of customization it provides.

Last week, I got to visit the company’s HQ near Orlando for the third time, and let me tell you – every time I return, the group over there is improving, expanding, and experimenting with new things. That’s a huge key to ECD’s growth in the last decade, coming from one single industrial bay to a new 100,000-square-foot facility down the road it is already outgrowing.

The company’s founders have UK roots, so ECD was founded upon delivering top-tier, fully customized British classics like Range Rovers and Defenders. In recent years, we saw ECD begin offering its customers electric options, cleverly integrating Tesla motors and battery packs into the existing chassis and drivetrain.

In June 2022, ECD announced plans for an electric Jaguar E-Type from the 1970s, available in a roadster convertible or a 2+2 coupe. When I last visited in October of 2022, I got a peek at the E-Type’s assembly line , as the ECD team was familiarizing itself with the classic before beginning to build complete and fully customized restorations.

Last week, I got to walk the assembly lines yet again to see the progress of the Jaguar E-Type builds – a majority of which are going electric. Furthermore, ECD had recently completed its first all-electric E-Type for a customer, and I got to take it out for a spin and help with some quality control before it was delivered. Here are my thoughts.

jaguar type e tour auto

ECD’s Jaguar E-Type feels like it was made to be electric

Having visited ECD multiple times in the past, I knew the routine at this point. ECD co-founder Scott Wallace took me on a brief tour, focusing specifically on the E-Types because there are several currently being built, which is a completely unique process to what the custom auto builder is used to with its Land Rovers.

Wallace told me the ECD team initially thought it could transfer its build process from the Defender lines, anticipating a need for more knowledgeable staff as the key hurdle, but explained they got it wrong. It was the opposite. ECD’s talented workers handled the Jaguar just fine, but the building process is entirely different.

For instance, ECD had previously specialized in custom ground-up builds with the Land Rovers, using components shipped from the UK. The electric Jaguar E-Types on the other hand, are complete restorations – meaning ECD is acquiring entire vehicles around the US, disassembling them, sandblasting the usable parts, and building them back up as EVs. To this point, ECD says it reuses around 50% of the original car on each build, a process that currently takes significantly longer compared to the Land Rovers ECD has been building for several years.

jaguar type e tour auto

Walking the assembly line, it was rather interesting how efficiently the electric motor and batteries fit inside the Jaguar E-Type, almost as if it were made to be electric – An argument I now standby having driven the roadster.

What’s even more interesting is that ECD’s electric configuration is a damn near match in weight distribution compared to the original V12 engine and transmission setup. So, the electric Jaguar E-Type drives nearly how its original makers intended, albeit with more torque and quicker acceleration. Wallace told me ECD would love to take credit for that design prowess, but it was merely a welcomed coincidence.

The drivetrain configuration consists of two batteries and a motor up front, plus a third battery pack in the trunk, combining for a total capacity of 42 kWh . Small by today’s EV standards, but remember – ECD is limited by the E-Type’s existing chassis.

Regardless, such a small vehicle can garner plenty of “oomph,” trust me. The drivetrain delivers 450 hp, while its batteries combine for up to 150 miles of all-electric range.

As you may recall, back in March, we reported that ECD was moving on from the refurbished Tesla motors and battery packs in favor of a new configuration from Ampere EV , enabling the custom builder to now offer its customers new features like 4WD, three different drive modes, creep mode, and finally… DC fast charging.

With this new drivetrain system, present in the electric Jaguar E-Type, ECD can deliver many of the EV technologies consumers come to expect today, even if their original vehicle was built 50+ years ago. So, how does an electrified E-Type drive? Well, let me tell you, my friends.

jaguar type e tour auto

Test driving the E-Type

After my tour, it was time to take the E-Type out for a spin alongside ECD co-founder Elliot Humble. We did our usual route around the Orlando area I had driven several times before, offering areas of long open roads to see what the roadster could do. I was not disappointed.

While the new drivetrain system from Ampere is less powerful than the previous Tesla configuration, its other perks gained in return outweigh the loss. The regenerative braking is much smoother and more effective, moving closer to genuine one-pedal driving, but not quite yet. Perhaps next year (wink, wink).

Acceleration was a breeze. One that whipped my longer hair around into a voluminous helmet by the time we were done because of a very low windshield. Still, I immediately felt at ease behind the wheel of this EV, whipping around and overtaking several “slower” cars on the road – although, I did need to use my neck to check beside me and in my blind spots because the side mirrors on this car are relatively useless.

Before I drove, I sat down with ECD’s head of sales and design, John Price, who walked me through the design process of my own electric Jaguar E-Type. Surprisingly, when I returned from my drive, the ECD had assembled a mini replica to take home. I share this detail because it speaks volumes about the level of customization and customer service ECD puts into every one of its builds – from the first design meeting to delivery and beyond. Check out my work!

jaguar type e tour auto

Overall, this was yet another insightful trip to ECD Auto Design, filled with inspiration and laughter. Every time I visit, I’m amazed at how much the company has grown – both in size and in know-how. As someone that tries to improve and optimize his own life daily, I’m always impressed at how ECD can do it at such a scale and do it damn well.

That work has paid off as well. ECD’s success has caught investors’ eyes, and the company intends to go public later this month following a bell-ringing ceremony at the New York Stock Exchange. It is a huge milestone, but this company must maintain its small and scrappy attitude toward its one-of-a-kind builds, and it knows that. Let’s hope corporate America doesn’t kill the magic. My money’s on ECD (not literally… at least not yet).

I’m already looking forward to my next visit, especially since the company has given me a sneak peek at what’s next in its pipeline. I can’t say anything publicly yet, but it’s an exciting next step. Expect another visit in the future, but until then, check out this detailed look at ECD’s new electric Jaguar E-Type:

The Series I, also referred to as the Jaguar XK-E in the North American market, stands as a living testament to British automotive design. From stern to bow, Jaguar didn't miss an opportunity to sculpt some of the finest lines in automotive history. From every angle, the E-Type is iconic. The XK-E wasn't a shock to the automotive world when it debuted at the Geneva Motor Show in March 1961.

The second series of the Jaguar ran for three short years from 1968 to 1971 with approximately 18,000 manufactured. The design of Series 2 was mostly the same as the Series 1 with the minor change to the headlights.

The final model, the Series 3 E-Type, was introduced in 1971 and ran through 1975 with a production volume of just over 15,000. It was only produced as a convertible and 2+2 coupé. The Series 3 E-Type had a new 5.3L Jaguar V12 engine, improved brakes, and power steering. It was known for its large cross-slatted front grille, flared wheel arches, wider tyres, and four exhaust tips.

The History of the Jaguar XK-E

The Jaguar is one of the very few special cars that has managed to transcend its medium. It is not only a dream car for many enthusiasts but has also permeated many aspects of culture. Although many enthusiasts count it among the finest classic British sports cars ever produced, its run would only last from 1961 to 1973.

The Jaguar Etype, also referred to as the Jaguar XK-E in the North American market, stands as a living testament to British automotive design. From stern to bow, Jaguar didn't miss an opportunity to sculpt some of the finest lines in automotive history. From every angle, the E-Type is iconic. The XK-E wasn't a shock to the automotive world when it debuted at the Geneva Motor Show in March 1961. People had come to expect wonderful-looking cars from the upper-crust British manufacturer. That said, even though the E-Type replaced the D-Type – a tough act to follow, indeed – it was still heralded in its time as something truly special.

Rooted in history and inspired by the racing success of the D-Type, which secured three consecutive victories at the 24 Hours of Le Mans starting in 1955, the E-Type emerged as the next chapter of the legendary vehicle's aesthetic and design. This new design not only ushered in a new look for the company but also introduced a cutting-edge concept for its time - a front subframe seamlessly integrated with the engine, front suspension, and bodywork, eradicating the need for a traditional ladder frame chassis. The new design led to a remarkably lightweight contender for the track, with its earliest examples weighing only 1,315 kg (2,899 lbs).

What made the original Jaguar so special?

The E-Type wasn't just a revolutionary beauty; its status as an icon also relies on its exceptional performance. The original XK-E had a top speed of 150 miles per hour (240 km/h) and could accelerate from 0 to 60 mph (97 km/h) in under 7 seconds. Not only did it house an exciting engine, but it also pioneered features like disc brakes, rack-and-pinion steering, and independent front and rear suspension. Its launch on March 15, 1961, left an indelible mark, garnering praise and admiration in heaps. While the claim that Enzo Ferrari hailed it as "the most beautiful car ever made" remains legendary, its iconic status is unquestioned.

Beyond the automotive realm, it has etched its shape into the panes of popular culture in more ways than we can possibly quantify. It is an instantly recognizable symbol of fine test and status. Aside from countless appearances on TV, film, video games, art, literature, poetry, and any other kind of culture-building mediums we have, the E Type is indelibly woven into our culture and our hearts. It is for these many reasons that ECD Automotive Design takes such pride in the heritage of the E-Type. And it is that pride that drives us to pour the same level of care, execution, and attention to detail into our revitalized versions of the most beautiful car ever made.

06 June 2022, Coventry, UK : Jaguar Classic showcased a bespoke Jaguar E-type at the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Pageant on 5 June 2022. The one-off renovation features a comprehensive list of enhancements carried out by the expert technicians at Classic Works, and metallic blue paintwork inspired by the Union Jack.

The unique E-type made its debut alongside fifteen iconic Jaguars to feature in the Jubilee Pageant, including a selection of historically important Jaguar E-types, an all-electric I-PACE eTROPHY race car, and seven convertible Jaguars all carrying famous Dames. The customer, thrilled to participate, was joined by American dancer, model, and fashion designer, Eric Underwood in the passenger seat.

Jaguar Classic creates beautifully crafted E-types by restoring Series 1 models to their original specification. This bespoke example goes even further, showcasing the full breadth of personalisation available from its state-of-the-art home in Coventry.

The one-off E-type was commissioned by a client who had specific requirements. He wanted a Roadster manufactured in the year he was born and finished to a bespoke specification. The team at Jaguar Classic set to work and tracked down a Series 1 E-type that was built just two days after the customer’s date of birth.

Over the following 12 months, the car underwent a complete rebuild, beginning with the bodywork. Finished in a unique deep metallic blue inspired by the blue of the Union Jack, the new blue, was exclusively mixed by the paint shop following numerous consultations and sample creations to craft the perfect hue over several months.

The bespoke interior features striking leather upholstery finished in a shade of red inspired by iconic British pillar boxes, and was hand finished using traditional methods at the in-house Jaguar Classic Works trim shop.

Being able to bring a customer’s vision for their dream E-type to life is hugely rewarding. The result is a complete one-off that showcases the full breadth of capabilities provided by the team at Jaguar Classic. With a colour scheme inspired by the Union Jack, I can’t think of a better place for it to make its first appearance than the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Pageant. I am so excited to see it parade down The Mall.

Stephen Hollis

Bespoke lead engineer, jaguar classic.

With the body assembly and paintwork complete, the engineering team went to work refitting mechanical elements – including a host of enhancements. The original 4.2-litre straight-six was replaced by a larger 4.7-litre engine, delivering superior performance. It is optimised for road driving and married to Jaguar Classic’s specially developed five-speed gearbox, for a smoother, quieter and more refined driving experience.

Uprated suspension ensures the chassis can exploit the performance provided by its powertrain, while wider wheels, tyres, and uprated brakes deliver superior grip and confidence. A sports exhaust and manifold ensure the E-type’s soundtrack suits its dynamic character.

Modern technologies include 21st century connectivity provided by the Classic Infotainment system – combining touchscreen controls, satellite navigation and Bluetooth with a period-look that is perfectly in-keeping with the rest of the vehicle. Powerful exterior LED lighting also brings illumination up to modern standards for additional confidence driving at night.

A series of bespoke details complete the vehicle, including a unique plate and dash plaque. In addition, this one-off blue E-type features a few elements inspired by the limited E-type 60 Collection.

I wanted a classic E-type that could be relied upon for daily driving and be comfortable on Grand Tours while remaining authentic to the original – and I’m blown away by the results. You sense the history and knowledge when you enter the Jaguar Classic Works facility and even after several visits, I still get excited to be in the building. I’m so proud of the car the passionate team there has created, and I’m privileged to be part of its story.

Vehicle Owner

Whilst most of the project was bespoke, certain elements are available for all E-type owners to purchase and benefit from. These include Jaguar Classic’s specially developed five-speed gearbox and their Classic Infotainment system. The five-speed gearbox, originally unveiled on the E-type 60 Collection and is available to purchase through Jaguar Classic’s dedicated parts team. Not only does it give the E-type added usability and comfort, but its installation requires no cutting, and therefore no loss of integrity to the vehicle.

E-type had already turned heads at the Geneva Motor Show a month earlier, and now these modified vehicles were ready to show the world what they were capable of.

MAIDEN TRIUMPHS

With Graham Hill behind the wheel, the Indigo Blue ‘ECD 400’ takes home the win that day at the Oulton Park circuit.  Roy Salvadori, driving the Pearl Grey ‘BUY 1’, comes in third and goes on to win at Crystal Palace a month later.  Between 1961 and 1964, E-type ZP lands 24 podium places.

The centre console in each of the vehicles is engraved by renowned British artist Johnny “King Nerd” Dowell. Featuring silhouettes of the Crystal Palace and Oulton Park race tracks.

Underneath a tribute to Hill and Salvadori, each centre console also depicts half of a laurel wreath, signifying the original vehicle’s race win.

ECD Auto Design Jaguar E-Type Electric First Drive: EV restomods have a bright future

K ISSIMMEE, Fla. — If you’ve ever dipped a toe into the restomod world before, there’s a good chance you’ve heard of the Florida-based company ECD. Originally known as East Coast Defender for the company’s earliest efforts restomodding Land Rover Defenders , it’s now just “ECD Auto Design.” That’s because there’s a whole lot more than just Defenders being cranked out of the workshop these days.

And while we’ve already driven its Land Rover offerings in the Defender and Range Rover Classic, today it’s time to take the company’s latest creation for a spin: the ECD Jaguar E-Type. ECD announced its foray into the E-Type world about a year and a half ago, and by the time we showed up, it’d already produced seven restored and/or heavily modified E-Types.

Before we get too far into first impressions, though, some history. The E-Type, formally known as the XK-E here in the states, was produced between 1961 and 1974. It was a bombshell of a sports car when new, touting impressive performance for a solid price from both its inline-six and V12 engines. Jaguar went through three main iterations of the XK-E before wrapping up sales here: Series I, Series II and Series III. And while ECD has restored a Series I, it’s focusing on the more widely available (and more affordable) Series II cars for this project. The E-Type was available as a coupe or convertible, and while ECD is allowing you to stick with either of the original powertrains for restoration builds, it’s also offering some rather tempting swaps.

If there’s something you should know about ECD, it’s that this company loves a good American V8. You’ll find an LS- or LT-based General Motors V8 in most of its Defender builds , and that’s exactly what ECD is offering in the E-Type, too. GM ’s 450-horsepower LT1 can be plopped under the long hood of the E-Type should you want to turn it into a tire-destroying muscle machine. On the other end of the spectrum is an electric conversion option, which is the E-Type variant we got to drive.

Before you scream “sacrilege!” we won’t bury the lede on this one: An all-electric E-Type is actually a hoot to drive. Admittedly, what makes it fun to drive is also what makes other modern-day sports cars fun to drive. It’s lightweight at just 2,940 pounds (that’s 60 pounds less than the V8-powered version), features a 51/49 weight balance, has a 305-horsepower motor doling out power solely to the rear wheels … and you can take the roof off! Today’s EVs, even the smaller ones, are considerably heavier than this one. Also, while Porsche is prepping its electric Boxster , you simply can’t go out and buy a new electric convertible sports car, because they don’t exist.

Of course, this EV is light and massively characterful to drive because it’s quite literally an E-Type from the 1970s that’s had its inline-six heart ripped out. There are no regulations or crash standards it needs to adhere to, so you’re left with what is essentially a “new” E-Type, but better. And we do mean better, too, because ECD will install an upgraded suspension and braking system for more modern (and safer) dynamics. The ride is a good bit stiffer than a regular E-Type, but the body control and roll resistance is much improved, lending greater confidence when driving it with vigor. You’ll still need to use a fair amount of lock from the delicate wooden steering wheel to get turning action, but this electric E-Type genuinely feels light on its feet and balanced when you swing it left or right. The brakes do a slightly worse job of masquerading as modern performance car brakes, but they’re still better than what stock brakes from the 1960s or 1970s will give you. Plus, you can turn the regenerative braking on or off depending on whether you want the car to automatically decelerate once you lift off the throttle – ECD says it’s working on a one-pedal drive mode for future builds, too.

Slamming the throttle brings the instant-on shove of a performance EV, and the corresponding electric whine you can hear with the roof off is entertaining. We’d guess the 0-60 mph time is right around 5 seconds as it stands with the 305-horsepower motor, but ECD says it’s working on developing a more powerful 450-horsepower electric motor for those who want even better acceleration. After driving the E-Type around at its current power level, though, we’re left wondering if more power would make the experience any better. The E-Type was used in racing many years ago, but as a road car, this amount of power with its corresponding suspension and braking capabilities feels perfectly in balance.

As for areas of improvement, ECD says it’s constantly working with its battery supplier Ampere EV to fine-tune the software and improve battery performance (we actually lost drive momentarily on our test route due to a software glitch, but a quick cycle of the key had us back up and running normally). The 42-kilowatt-hour battery pack itself – the only size option – fits snugly under the E-Type’s long clamshell hood, while the motor and running gear route their way back through the chassis. ECD claims its electric E-Type can do about 200 miles of city driving or 140 miles of highway driving.

You can recharge it at a DC fast charger with a CCS plug, and it charges at a maximum rate of 50 kW, allowing you to go from 0-100% in about 45 minutes. That’s very slow by modern EV standards, but perhaps acceptable for a restomod that seems unlikely to venture off on many lengthy road trips . ECD says that by the end of 2024, it’ll support Tesla’s NACS plug , but folks who take delivery of their E-Types between now and then will be given adapters, and eventually the company will install NACS ports in its cars.

The way ECD restores and builds its E-Types is a little different from its Defender production line, too. The Land Rovers essentially keep their frames and some key drivetrain components, but besides those bits, they’re entirely new vehicles with new parts. The E-Types are instead restorations, retaining as much of the original car as possible. ECD can buy new body panels directly from Jaguar, and it keeps the exterior looking about as faithful to its original form as can be. That’s where the originality of the appearance ends, though. The colors , upholstery, trim and pretty much anything to do with the appearance can be customized to your heart’s content. All of the cars are painted and put together on-site in Kissimmee, Fla., and then tested for several hundred miles before they’re ultimately delivered to customers around the country. In a word, the end products are beautiful. Then again, this is an E-Type. When has that ever not been the case?

Pricing for the E-Type restoration begins at $299,995 and only goes up from there depending on whatever luxury or powertrain options you may choose. The end product is essentially a brand-new E-Type with whatever form of motivation excites you. We can vouch for the electric version being great fun to drive, but an LT4 boomed by us while visiting the site, and it’s nearly as tempting.

And don’t worry, traditionalists. ECD is happy to restore (and even improve) the original inline-six or V12 that these E-Types came with from the factory. However, the company warns that you’re in for an entirely different maintenance experience over the lifetime of the vehicle should you pass up the modern powertrains.

No matter the choice, a brand-new E-Type built to these standards is some forbidden fruit that very few builders in the world can give you.
