It's the Hitchcockian "wrong man" theme played as a Hollywood action lark, all momentum and spectacle and no mortal risk or moral confusion...
Though it won’t hold up under a closer inspection of the plot, its fast-paced nature supplies an almost perfect blend of laughs and action to the summer moviegoer.
Knight and Day moves so fast it's not convenient to mull over where reality ends and the special effects begin. [Full review in Spanish]
An unimaginative recital of car-fueled multiplex cinema... [Full review in Spanish]
With all of these twists, turns, and frequent mood and setting changes, "Knight and Day" comes across as confused to what kind of movie it wants to be.
Bland, forgettable, expensive action...
Having seen the film, I can only shake my head at the studio's optimism.
Cruise and Diaz have a marvelous chemistry.
As a time-waster, Knight and Day is entertaining enough. It sets the bar low then clears it effortlessly. But as I creep into the damning- with-faint-praise department, reviewing this film feels as pointless as watching it.
It's a cute romantic comedy mixed with thrilling action that succeeds in being both fun and entertaining.

'Knight and Day': Behind the Scenes
Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz talk about how they pulled off that motorcycle chase
Staff Editor
In Knight and Day , Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz hop on a motorcycle for a climactic high-speed chase through the Spanish city of Cádiz. Some of the scene was shot with stunt doubles or with their chopper comfortably attached to a mobile camera rig, but Cruise often went freestyle with Diaz sitting behind him. He’s ridden motorbikes since he was a kid, so that wasn’t much of a problem — until the day they had to ride alongside a stampeding herd of bulls.
”They’re going to get food at the end of the run,” says Diaz, ”so the ones in back are trying to get to the front. There’s a lot of pushing and trying to move up on each other. But you can’t really be fearful, [because] then you’re putting yourself in danger. You have to be focused.”
The crew had shot with the bulls for four days before the stars arrived, but there were still a few risky moments. ”The stone road was very slick,” says Cruise. ”That’s why we chose that Ducati [motorcycle]. The tires were good. It was lighter in weight than the superbikes.”
The tricky part, says Diaz, came ”mostly in the throttling and braking. You know, keeping the right speed for the camera, but making sure that we were the right distance away from the bulls.” Laughs Cruise, ”The heart was definitely pumping that morning!”

Movie stars outrun the special effects bull(s)
Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz ride with the SFX bulls.
“Knight and Day” aspires to the light charm of a romantic action comedy like “Charade” or “ Romancing the Stone ,” but would come closer if it dialed down the relentless action. The romance part goes without saying after a Meet Cute contrived in an airport, and the comedy seems to generate naturally between Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz . But why do so many summer movies find it obligatory to inflict us with CGI overkill? I’d sorta rather see Diaz and Cruise in action scenes on a human scale, rather than have it rubbed in that for long stretches, they’re essentially replaced by animation.
Have summer audiences been so hammered down by special effects that they require noise and fragmented visuals to hold their interest? Is it still possible to delight in a story unfolding with charm and wit? How many machine guns do you need in a romantic comedy? If you have charismatic stars like Cruise and Diaz and an A-List director, do you have to hedge your bets?
The movie is entertaining, but could have been better. The director is James Mangold , whose previous two films were “ Walk the Line ” and “ 3:10 to Yuma .” I have a hunch there was an early draft of Patrick O’Neill’s script that was more in the Cary Grant rom-com tradition and then somebody decided the effects had to be jacked up. From the ads, you could get the notion this is a Michael Bay film.
The wonder is that Cruise and Diaz are effective enough in their roles that they’re not overwhelmed by all the commotion surrounding them. They make the movie work because they cheerfully project that they know it’s utter nonsense and pitch in to enjoy the fun. I’ve been reading that movie stars can no longer “sell” a blockbuster movie. Audiences buy the concept, brand name, packaging, whatever. If that’s true, which I doubt, it would mean a victory of technology over humans. If it comes true, it will be because movies have lost interest in creating and shaping characters we care about — because they’re using actors as insert shots in special effects.
The plot makes splendid use of a MacGuffin, the device which explains everything by explaining nothing. Roy Miller, the Cruise character, has something, and there are bad guys who want it. I could tell you what it is, but what difference does it make? That’s the whole point of a MacGuffin. Anyway, Roy “happens” to run into June Havens, the Diaz character, at an airport, for reasons you will discover. That’s the manipulated Meet Cute. Now this next part you will want to follow closely.
They both end up on the same airplane, which has no other passengers, except some men scattered here and there. She goes to the restroom. He kills all the men and both pilots, then sits the dead passengers upright in “Weekend At Bernie’s” style. She comes out of the restroom, not having heard the gunshots. He crash-lands the plane in a field and urges her to follow him in escaping FBI agents who are after them.
But … but … was there no other way for the bad guys to get the MacGuffin than by taking over a scheduled flight? Maybe, I dunno, snatch him on the ground? How did the FBI know the plane would crash — and where? Also, if you track who has possession of the MacGuffin during various times at the airport, you’ll go crazy. Mind you, I’m not complaining. The movie knows this sequence is monumentally silly, and so do Cruise and Diaz, and Cruise keeps up a reassuring line of patter all during it, even while trying to crash-land safely.
That stuff is entertaining. There’s also a running joke about how much ground they cover in an international chase. The movie was shot on location in Massachusetts, Spain (where they are chased by bulls), California, Jamaica, Austria and Kankakee, Ill., which has an excellent Steak ‘n Shake off Interstate 57. Whether the actors were actually there on all those locations is a good question. Maybe only the green screen stuff was shot on location.
Such matters are irrelevant in a movie that makes not the slightest pretense of realism. Cruise and Diaz are fully scripted throughout with nonstop bantering and one-liners. They never seriously discuss their situation. They spend half the movie in dire danger. Thousands of bullets miss them. By motorcycle, car, train, airplane and parachute, they survive anything.
That girl June, she’s a trouper. She follows Roy everywhere and believes everything he says. But … but … why does she need to come along? Roy has the MacGuffin. She was a witness, you say? To what? I’ll tell you why she has to be along. It’s because this is a romantic action comedy starring Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz, that’s why.
So all of that I accept, and even applaud, and I observe that Diaz has one of the most winning grins in the movies. Basically, what I wanted was more of it. Some of that Cary Grant dialogue. More flirtation. More of a feeling the characters, not the production, were in the foreground. More of the stars. Because movie stars really do make a difference. I insist on it.

LOS ANGELES There’s a reason Hollywood calls it “development hell.” Even when it turns out well.
Such is the lesson of “Knight and Day,” a big-budget action comedy starring Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz that’s set to open on June 25, directly opposite Adam Sandler in his own comic romp “Grown Ups.”
As it happens, Mr. Sandler passed up a chance to star in “Knight and Day” about five years ago, when the project was known as “Wichita.”
That was before it morphed into “Trouble Man,” a quasi-romantic vehicle for Chris Tucker and Eva Mendes, but well after it was dreamed up, by the writer Patrick O’Neill, as “All New Enemies,” a sophisticated R-rated caper in which an off-kilter older guy who behaves a bit like Peter Falk in “The In-Laws” was paired with a troubled young one, like, say, Edward Furlong of “Terminator 2: Judgment Day.”
The coming spring-summer blockbuster season is chock full of sequels like “Iron Man 2,” from Marvel and Paramount, and adaptations like the graphic-novel-based “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World,” from Universal.
But “Knight and Day” was made the old-fashioned way: by running an original, “spec” script through Hollywood’s brutal development mill, with its endless rewrites and changing star and filmmaker alignments. Finally, against all odds, it popped up as an event film on the summer schedule at 20th Century Fox, in partnership with New Regency Pictures.
“Knight and Day” is also notable because with it Mr. Cruise, once the most bankable star in Hollywood, is looking for his first runaway hit since “War of the Worlds,” which took in $234 million at the box-office in 2005.
The director of “Knight and Day,” James Mangold, is still finishing the film. But its trailers have turned into hot commodities on the Internet.
EW.com’s PopWatch column was among the first to voice approval, when its writer said in December: “I still don’t know exactly what it’s about, and that’s what’s so cool. What’s even cooler? These two superstars reminding us why they’re superstars.”
Actually, the story finds Ms. Diaz, as June Havens, trying to figure out what is real and what is not not unlike Audrey Hepburn opposite Cary Grant in 1963 in “Charade” after Mr. Cruise’s maddeningly unreliable secret operative, Roy Miller, takes her on a tear. Possibly in the service of a world-saving mission. Or not.
Most scripts die in development. Somehow “Knight and Day” survived. Asked why, Steve Pink, a producer of the film who helped work out the original idea with Mr. O’Neill, a high school friend from Evanston, Ill., pointed to its core concept, a shifty protagonist. “That, and the strength of Pat’s writing,” he said last week. “Otherwise I have no idea how it stayed alive.”
Mr. Mangold, Mr. Cruise and Fox executives declined to be interviewed about the film, which trades on plot twists, misdirection and big reveals. But several people who worked on the movie most of whom spoke on condition of anonymity to avoid conflict with studio executives and others described it as having gone through twists of its own, without quite as many laughs.
Mr. Sandler was offered a shot at the project about the time it was first set up, as “Wichita,” at Revolution Studios, with Mr. Pink and another producer, Todd Garner. It was Mr. Garner who had suggested that the troubled young counterpart to Miller, or Milner, as he was known then, become a woman.
Still, Mr. Sandler passed, declaring, by one account, “I just don’t see me with a gun.”
Revolution then folded. But its chief executive, Joe Roth, joined Mr. Pink and Mr. Garner in moving “Wichita” to Sony Pictures, by now with Chris Tucker, the madcap star of the “Rush Hour” series, cast opposite Ms. Mendes, who was riding high after appearances in “2 Fast 2 Furious” and “Hitch.”
Mr. O’Neill was still the writer. And Phil Joanou was supposed to direct until Mr. Joanou’s “Gridiron Gang” opened poorly, and Sony got cold feet about the whole thing.
From there the project was off to Fox, with a new director, Tom Dey, who had just done the romantic comedy “Failure to Launch.”
Somewhere along the line “Wichita” had become “Trouble Man.” But Fox executives wanted more romance, so they brought on new writers, including Dana Fox, whose credits include “What Happens in Vegas.”
Eventually, according to the Studio System, an industry database company that is owned by The New York Times Company, more than a half-dozen writers followed Mr. O’Neill on “Knight and Day.”
Mr. Tucker and Ms. Mendes, however, dropped out, as did Mr. Dey.
Then Ms. Diaz, who had starred in “What Happens in Vegas,” stepped in. So did Gerard Butler. Almost. On meeting with producers, however, Mr. Butler announced that just that day he had agreed to do “The Bounty Hunter,” a competing comic caper, which paired him with Jennifer Aniston.
This left the door open for Mr. Cruise, who was on the rebound from a stretch of bad publicity and, on the strength of his widely praised performance in “Valkyrie,” was seriously auditioning at least five of Hollywood’s hottest projects as his prospective next film.
One of the five became “Salt,” a thriller set for release by Sony on July 23, with Angelina Jolie in the role that had been set for Mr. Cruise. Another was “The Tourist,” which now pairs Ms. Jolie and Johnny Depp in a thriller that has been shooting in Venice, for eventual release by Sony.
But Mr. Cruise became fixed on “Knight and Day.” Or, at least, on his vision for it.
An inveterate tinkerer, Mr. Cruise typically plays with ideas, characters and scripts, developing his slant on stories that are ultimately written by others. In this case, according to one person who was briefed on his work, Mr. Cruise wanted to superimpose a character of his own on top of Milner. Ms. Diaz too had ideas.
All of those became grist for Mr. Mangold, a writer-director with whom Mr. Cruise had nearly made “3:10 to Yuma,” before leaving the lead roles in that one to Russell Crowe and Christian Bale.
One Cruise touch in “Knight and Day”: a trailer moment, in which Ms. Diaz’s character flips over the handlebars of a motorcycle, fully armed, facing Mr. Cruise as he steers.
As of last week the Writers Guild of America West had yet to determine final writing credits for the film. But Fox, in submitting the project for credits arbitration, said it viewed the story as having been written by Mr. O’Neill, with a script by Mr. O’Neill and Mr. Mangold a tribute to the staying power of the original story, notwithstanding the many writers who were involved.
Mr. Pink, for his part, is pleased that Hollywood, at least occasionally, is still willing to go through the bother of developing an original script, however grueling the process may be.
“You have an idea,” he said, “and it’s a miracle it ever happens.”

A Fan Spoke Out About Their Love For Tom Cruise And Cameron Diaz's Knight And Day. Director James Mangold Responded
A fan’s love for Knight and Day led to its director’s response.
Knight and Day is an example of a Tom Cruise movie you may not have seen . With a plot similar to Killers which also premiered in June 2010, Cameron Diaz plays a woman who accidentally gets caught up with a secret agent, played by Tom Cruise , who is on the run from the CIA. While it’s been 12 years since Knight and Day hit theaters, one fan spoke out about her love of the movie, and its director, James Mangold , had a response to her praise.
Some may think of Knight and Day as a remarkably average movie that was made for fans who wanted to see Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz together on a whirlwind adventure. However, one person who felt Knight and Day was a great action-comedy romance was film critic Courtney Howard who tweeted everything she loved about this movie:
.@mang0ld ’s KNIGHT AND DAY rules so hard! Tom Cruise combines his leading man charisma w/ his love of adrenaline junkie stunts & Cameron Diaz gets a perfect screwball romcom for her impeccable timing. Walking through a hailstorm of bullets to kiss?! Hot! pic.twitter.com/pLCJtk7Dfp May 21, 2023
She brings up some great points as Tom Cruise has been known to dazzle audiences with his leading male status. Plus, we've come to know Cameron Diaz in part for the rom-coms she starred in during the 2000s-2010s with movies like The Holiday, What Happens in Vegas, and What to Expect When You’re Expecting on her resume. So, it’s almost like seeing two different worlds coming together. Howard made sure to post the scene when Tom Cruise’s character decides to walk through a hailstorm of bullets in order to kiss his leading lady. This is definitely, something an action lead like Cruise would be expected to do in this situation, and it was epic.
One thing that makes this film critic incredibly lucky is having her positive spin on the movie seen by Knight and Day director James Mangold himself. He made sure to respond positively to her glowing Twitter review by writing:
I love that scene too, Courtney. Thanks!
It’s such a great compliment to have your film appreciated over a decade later. This brought the opportunity for other Twitter users to recall their favorite scenes and quotes from the movie.
While there are many who love the film like Howard, when Knight and Day first premiered, it only pulled in $3.8 million on opening day . This is partially due to the heavy competition of Toy Story 3 which was a box office hit that summer. Not only was Knight and Day considered a box office disappointment, but the reviews weren’t very good with many critics noting the lack of chemistry between Cruise and Diaz as well as their issues with the screenplay. However, there's clearly still a crowd that loves this fun movie.
Knight and Day may not have been the most successful movie of 2010. However, it proves that a movie being a flop doesn’t mean everyone had harsh feelings about it. Courtney Howard sure was a fan of the action-comedy as well as many others, and James Mangold certainly appreciated the love. It just takes tweets like hers to remind us of that.

These upcoming projects include: Mangold putting out Indiana Jones and The Dial of Destiny on June 30, Cruise releasing Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One on July 12, and Diaz making her return to acting in Back in Action which will likely come out later this year.

One of Tom Cruise 's most underrated movies, which has been lacking a streaming home for quite some time, just got the update fans have been waiting for. Knight and Day , the 2010 action adventure comedy which Cruise stars in alongside Cameron Diaz , Peter Sarsgaard , and Jordi Mollá , will officially begin streaming on Max on September 1. The film follows a young woman (Diaz) who gets mixed up with a disgraced spy (Cruise) who is trying to clear his name. Knight and Day is part of a major round of additions to Max in September which is also headlined by The Martian , the space sci-fi thriller starring Matt Damon . Knight and Day also stars Paul Dano , Falk Hentshcel , and Marc Blucas , and currently sits at a 52% score from critics and a 49% rating from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes .
The script for Knight and Day was written by Patrick O'Neill , and it is one of his most famous works now nearly 15 years later along with the 1989 coming-of-age romantic comedy, Say Anything , starring John Cusack and Ione Skye , which he starred in instead of writing. His only writing credits after Knight and Day have been several episodes of Mary Shelley's Frankenhole , and the 2014 action film Bang Bang . Knight and Day was helmed by James Mangold , who is best known for his work directing one of the highest-rated comic book movies of all time, Logan , and most recently helmed Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny ( Harrison Ford ) and Ford v. Ferrari ( Christian Bale ).
Knight and Day Collected a Haul at the Box Office in 2010
Knight and Day was produced on a hefty budget that was reported to be roughly $120 million, but the film earned all that back and then some with its strong performance at the worldwide box office. Knight and Day grossed $76 million domestically paired with $185 from overseas markets to amount to a collective total of more than $260 million. When adjusted for inflation, this total comes out to around $376 million, meaning it would line up with 2024 films such as Twisters and Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes , two of the biggest blockbusters of the year.
Knight and Day stars Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz and was written by Patrick O'Neill and directed by James Mangold. Stay tuned to Collider for future streaming updates and watch Knight and Day on Max starting September 1.
