Everything You Need To Know About Chanel’s Cruise Collection

Taking place aboard a giant ocean liner in the Grand Palais, this was a celebration of the glamour of cruise – complete with lifeboat handbags and abundant berets. Chanel’s Cruise collections are the stuff of fashion fantasy: they come complete with the likes of fully functioning rocket ships, Chanel-stacked supermarket shelves, and icebergs transported specially from the Scandinavian seas. This time, Karl Lagerfeld stayed true to form with a cruise-themed Cruise collection which was staged around a cruise ship docked in the Grand Palais. This is what you need to know: all aboard, anchors away, etc.

In 1919, Gabrielle Chanel invented the very concept of Cruise when she presented a Paris collection outside of the seasonal fashion schedule, specifically designed for the sorts of fabulous women who would holiday in her beloved Biarritz: unlined, fluid dresses formed from silk jersey, or light knits suited to breezy beachfronts. In 1983, Karl Lagerfeld developed Cruise into clothing made for women who escape bleak European winters in favour of warmer climes (Cruise collections sit on shelves between November and July) – and this collection appeared a literal reclamation of the term. While some houses have decided to rebrand and use the term “pre-collection” for practicality, and Chanel’s Cruise now extends long past holiday wear and into a complete, travel-inspired wardrobe, here was a resurrection of its original sentiment and a direct reminder that this house has changed the fashion industry, and the way women dress, forever.

In a show space that took four weeks to fabricate, 15 days to construct, and which spanned 5624 square metres and a 150-metre catwalk, was a life-size cruise liner sailing atop a shimmering cyclorama sea. It’s hard to imagine the amount of resources that go into staging such an affair – and that was even before the chimneys started steaming, or the doorways opened to the audience to reveal a two-story interior complete with grand pianos, oyster bars and under-lit plunge pools surrounding a whitewashed ballroom. This wasn’t just a (very) good show set – it was also the perfect place to stage the after party. A practical choice, then.

The good ship La Pausa was named in homage to Gabrielle Chanel’s holiday home on the French Riviera, which went by the same name and once played host to the likes of Salvador Dali, Luchino Visconti and Pablo Picasso – in fact, it was “one of the most enchanting villas that ever materialised on the shores of the Mediterranean,” proclaimed American Vogue in 1930. Such a villa is, of course, the perfect maxim for a Chanel Cruise collection – it’s the dream holiday destination, with plenty of yachts still docked in its vicinity – and now it is writ upon T-shirts, handbags and jumpers aplenty. We certainly hope a printed T-shirt constitutes an invite; the house re-bought the estate in 2005 and has now fully restored it to its original, Chanel-decorated splendour.

There are few novelty-shaped accessories quite so appealing as those which Karl Lagerfeld designs – and this time was certainly no different, with life rings translated into spherical handbags or pendant necklaces, and brooches made in the image of sailor boys. But the theme certainly didn’t stop there: there were nautical stripes in abundance; berets aplenty; porthole prints and sequinned wave motifs; the sort of rubber-soled sandals surely suited to pristine yacht floors. In case you didn’t get it, this is a cruise. You ought dress accordingly.

Speaking of dressing for cruise, this collection was even more Cher Horowitz-worthy than regular Chanel: there’s nothing like white tights worn with patent Mary Janes and topped with a beret to channel that saccharine, early-90s sweetness. Those looking for a high-octane, '80s throwback to suit their glamorous Cruise lifestyle would find plenty here, too: Dynasty shimmers and puffed jackets worn with strings of pearls piled atop; some Olivia Newton-John-worthy athleisure; pearlised PVC suiting that could have been made for Madonna. But whether you go full-on sailor girl, channel the pop icons of yesteryear or choose pastel-hued tweeds, it appears wherever you’re cruising you ought pack some pale hosiery. It’s now guaranteed to be making a comeback.

Tomorrow, as part of a new Chanel initiative, 500 students will be invited to explore the Cruise collection within the remarkable show-space – as well as to take part in a master class with President of Fashion Bruno Pavlovsky. Cruise collections are, in their origins, rather undemocratic (they were, after all, specifically designed for those holidaying in far-flung destinations) – but this is a new vision for their future. For those wondering about the next destination of the set, another future-facing Chanel mandate is that 75 percent of it will be recycled: steel is headed to a local scrap dealer, wooden planks and railings are to be reused, and the quay is going to be deconstructed and turned into paper pulp. The fantasy of Cruise is fabulous, but it’s made even better when rooted in reality.

Behind-The-Scenes At The Chanel 2014 Cruise Collection

Karl Lagerfeld debuted Chanel’s 2014 Cruise collection in the exotic location of Singapore inside an old nutmeg plantation this week. The annual spring runway show for resort clothing has been held in various European sites over the past few years, including Saint Tropez, Venice and Versailles, making the tropical Singapore site, a fresh, unique choice for the much-coveted brand.

Lagerfeld said of the choice of far-flung location, “Today, cruise is not about travelling any more, but we still travel for it because we show in all different parts of the world – we did Europe and the US. It was time for the Eastern part of the world, well what the Western world would consider the Eastern part.”

Over 1,200 of fashion’s elite went to Singapore to watch the show, which included distinguished models like Cara Delevingne, Joan Smalls, and Jamie Bochert walking down the runway. A-list stars like Dakota Fanning and Anna Mouglalis sat front row at the show.

Dakota Fanning commented, “I think that Karl does an amazing job of keeping the Chanel legacy alive but at the same time, it’s still so cool and so young and fresh and new every time.”

After the punk theme at the 2013 Met Ball in New York, the Chanel Cruise show reaffirmed that punk was making its full comeback this year,with the models sporting choppy fringed up-does with pops of bright liner. As a whole, the collection featured many black and white evening pieces and navy blue two-pieces in exotic prints.

“I did so many colours for the show in Edinburgh and suddenly I liked that very limited Chanel palette – white, off-white, ivory, black, bluemarine and navy blue – that was enough. There was no need for any other colours,” said Lagerfeld. “There are also enough shapes – there is a new proportion in this open, long skirt. Normally, long skirts don’t look good with heels, but these do. It’s a beautiful silhouette.”

Oh my, oh boy, tighten your belt and get ready for the new Chanel bag collection, it’s going to be a wild ride. The iconic Chanel no. 5 perfume bottle clutch got me very excited, I love it, but it’s nothing compared to the bags that we are about to show. All from the Cruise 2014 collection and they are getting ready to be stored in your local Chanel boutique. Yesterday you got to meet the new Chanel Boy Cube Bag in checkered red, but that was just the tip of the ice berg. Today you will find the rest of the line, including the cube bag in red/grey and gold/red and black.

Nightlife, arts and culture listings for moscow.

The Moscow Times english-language newspaper publishes a weekly listing of events, also available on their website: www.themoscowtimes.com/arts_n_ideas/calendar/

Another good English-language resource is A-A-AH  – www.a-a-ah.com/events-in-moscow – which has a good clubs listings and publishes interesting cultural events.

Your best way, though, is to go on Facebook pages of the places we recommend in our Moscow Guide and check out what's on there. We post the most interesting events on our Way to Russia Facebook Page as well, so check it out occasionally!

A great listing of public lectures, seminars, workshops and conferences happening in Moscow is available on Theory and Practice portal – www.tandp.ru – even though it's in Russian you can find really interesting talks on Russian cinema, software development, literary studies and anything else you want on there.

Among the Russian listings, Afisha (www. afisha.ru ) magazine is the most popular one.  While being slightly pretentious, it provides a lot of information and has good nightlife and art listings.

Another interesting newspaper is Bolshoy Gorod – www.bg.ru – which is distributed for free and has extensive listings. They also have a blog for each area of Moscow (in Russian).

Finally, Look At Me - www.lookatme.ru – is a sure source to find some party or exhibition you like.

Newspapers & Magazines

In english language,   in russian language.

The weekly Komsomolka is the local version of the UK Sun, but intelligentsia (smart people) prefer the free Bolshoy Gorod, which is a bit like the local version of The Village Voice, but not as big.

The "mainstream" fashion is determined by bi-weekly Afisha ( www.afisha.ru ) magazine.

The weekly Expert ( www.expert.ru ) and Itogi ( www.itogi.ru ) magazines provide comprehensive business, finance, and politics analysis.

The monthly magazines are anything from Playboy to Forbes, and from Cosmopolitan to The Rolling Stone.

Foreign Press

You can buy foreign magazines and newspapers in Moscow. Usually, they are sold in 5-star hotels, but the prices there are much too high. Also, you can try some newstands in the city (especially on Tverskaya St.), but the prices are high also, and the selection is poor.

However, there's a couple of places in Moscow, where you can get almost any magazine or newspaper, in English and in other languages. 1. Maxim's News Stand. They have everything, if they don't -- you can order. Prices are lower than on the cover. Also, they sell books and movies in English. Metro: Savyolovskaya (grey line, north center), Address: Nizhnyaya Maslovska, #2 (an underground pass near Savyolovskaya metro). Open hours: Mon-Sat 11.00 to 19.30 2. Arbat Supermarket. Just next to the entrance they sell some English-language magazines and fresh newspapers. Metro: Arbatskaya. Address: Novy Arbat st, Novoarbatsky supermarket - grocery store (there's only one, the entrance is on the street side). 3. Bookberry. The new Moscow book supermarket has an extensive section of foreign magazines and newspapers at moderate prices. Metro: Arbatskaya, Tverskaya (blue, purple line). Address: Boulevard Ring (walk from Novy Arbat towards Pushkinskaya square along Zubovsky boulevard and the shop will be to your left). Open hours: Mon-Sun 10.00-20.00

4. Gorbushka. The famous Moscow pirate CD, DVD, Software and official electronics market specializes in foreign music and DJ magazines. Address: metro Bagrationovskaya (Moscow west), a large building outside the exit - the crowds walks in its direction. Open hours: Mon-Sun 10.00-20.00 If for some reason you can't buy the thing you need in any of the shops above, try to go to some European or American medical or dental center - they have a great selection of magazines in their reception areas.
