A-Frame Camper Trailers – Pop Up Campers, Hard Side

a frame camper

Posted By: Savage Camper

When folded for transit, an A-Frame Camper trailer might be mistaken for a pop up tent trailer, as they look almost identical. However, when popped-up, the difference is visibly obvious, with hard side walls and a steeped roof, making for a completely enclosed living area. Compare that to the traditional, canvas sided pop-up tent trailer, popular over the last handful of decades.

The result is a hard-sided, pop-up camper with improved protection from the elements.

hello. i am looking for A frame popup with a toy hauler deck.

i have a Honda crv 1.8 motor would it be capable of towing your a frame van

' src=

Hi John, we actually don’t sell these A frame campers, but you can follow the links above to the manufacturer websites. I don’t know what year CRV you have, but the 2017 version has a towing limit of 1500 lbs., with what appears to be a larger motor than what you have. I’d recommend doing a Google search for your year vehicle’s towing capacity. All this being said, it looks as though many of A frame trailers weigh around 1,500 lbs or more which would be out of your towing capacity I believe. For camping trailers more likely within your towing capacity, you might consider an affordable teardrop trailer instead, which typically weigh well under 1,000 lbs. One other note, don’t forget to consider the weight of your camping gear as well.

10 Best A-Frame Trailers of 2022

a frame trailer

A-frame trailers are also known as a type of pop-up camper that is excellent for compact traveling. Their unique small size and luxury feel allow you to have a comfortable and cozy camping experience. With more and more advancements in trailers being made each year, it can be hard to find which make and model are the best.

Luckily, we’ve taken the time to research for you and present the best A-frame trailers. Below, we’ve listed the ten best A-frame trailers of 2021. We’ll also cover how to choose the best option for your needs.

Our Camper Selection Criteria

Here’s what we considered when rounding up the best A-frame campers.

Overall space: How much space is there to stretch out? Ones that have multiple beds or even convertible areas tend to be the better brands. However, we also try to compare the room in ratio to how many people can sleep there. Many newer camper brands sleep four or more people, with room for entertaining during the day.

Bathroom: What if you want modern commodities such as a shower? Even though A-frame campers are designed to be small, they can still fit in bathrooms. However, the type of bathroom ranges from model to model. We look for specific models that offer a stall shower, toilet, and have large water tanks.

Exterior: If a camper includes aluminum wheels, lightweight frames, and fiberglass, we prioritize them. These are all features that tend to make the vehicle more durable and weatherproof. We also look for corrosion-resistant material and extra weatherproof protection. Heavy-duty campers also include components for bumper protection, extra-thick corrosion-resistant material, and much more.

Capacity: The capacity of a camper needs to be two or more. We prioritize trailers that give ample space for up to four people. However, we also look at the floorplans to see how much space there is between furniture. A good camper will have enough space to sit enough people comfortably during the day and sleep during the night.

Weight: Due to many of the A-frame campers having more ‘modern’ material. These types of trailers are becoming more popular due to modern style furniture. Frameworks made from aluminum are generally required due to high durability and affordability. Also, besides the XL or large Aliner trailers, most tend to weigh under 3,500 lbs.

Benefits of an A-Frame Camper

Affordable. An A-Frame Camper is more affordable than a full-on trailer, which could run you well over $20,000. Instead, an A-Frame only costs around $11,000 to $20,000. Unless you want to have a custom build, it may run slightly higher in price.

Lightweight. Most A-Frame campers are lightweight and are pullable by small SUVs. The typical weight of most A-Frame campers is anywhere between 1,800 to 3,800 lbs. However, the weight changes based on what type of appliances, flooring, and materials the trailer is crafted from. If the camper goes over 3,000 lbs, then chances are a smaller SUV can’t pull it.

Extra Space. Unlike the alternative RV homes, an A-Frame provides a little bit of extra space and storage. The unique A-frame design provides higher ceilings and allows you to store things up top. A-Frame camper awning will also offer you additional storage from indoors and outdoors.

Versatility. Regular sized RVs take up a lot of space, which is why you won’t be able to explore deeper within the woods. With an A-frame camper, you can fit into smaller spaces and don’t take up as much room. Additionally, you can always unhook the trailer when you want to use your vehicle and explore off-road.

Convenient. Another benefit of an A-frame camper is that you can access storage from inside and outside. Additionally, some bathrooms can even be entered through both indoors and out. Popular A-frame camper brands include Aliner, Chalet, and even Flagstaff.

Storage Space. The storage space is where it shines. With extra overhead space, you’re able to store more of your possessions. If you plan to go camping, outdoor storage is also a huge plus. A-frame camper manufacturers have worked hard to provide you space in multiple areas. This includes the interior and exterior storage units.

Should You Buy an A-Frame Camper?

When it comes to knowing if an A-frame camper is right for you, there are a few considerations you may have to keep in mind. One limitation of an A-frame camper is that it can’t accommodate more than a few people.

Are You Traveling with A Crew?

If you’re planning on going on the road with more than four people, then we recommend a full-sized RV. A-frame campers have a capacity that can support up to four people. However, this doesn’t always mean that it can fit four people comfortably. A-frame campers are excellent for short-term trips or outdoorsmen, but not for a long-term living solution.

What Type of Floorplan Do You Want?

Another consideration to keep in mind is that most furniture in an A-frame camper is built-in. You have many options for floor-plans and can customize. However, you may not enjoy precisely how the trailer is styled. Luckily, more and more companies are providing optional installments to help make the camper more customizable.

What Amenities Do You Need?

Other amenities that may not be built-in in the camper are bathrooms . Our list prioritized some models with bathrooms, but most A-frame campers don’t always have them. However, newer models come with TVs, outlets, and even stereo systems. So, you’ll have to pick carefully and find a camper that suits your needs.

Where Are You Headed?

An A-frame camper may be the right solution for you if you’re looking for a trailer that can be pulled by a smaller vehicle. With most A-frame camper models, they generally weigh underneath 3,000 pounds. Many vehicles, such as a standard size SUV or a Ford Explorer, can tow up to 5,000 pounds.

Additionally, they allow you to travel to more remote locations where you usually couldn’t take a full motorhome. This will enable you to go off-road and still enjoy some of the modern amenities a home would provide you.

Lastly, they are more affordable than other types of trailers. For example, on average, a 5th wheel or motorhome costs around $100,000 depending on the features. If you’re looking for a more affordable model, A-frame campers start at just $10,000.

Q. What is an A-Frame Camper?

  • An A-frame camper is a type of trailer designed to pop-up and provide more living space. The materials are made from lightweight, rigid walls, which are both durable and weatherproof. As for design, they are built similar to other compact trailers. The main difference is that they are light enough for most medium to large vehicles to tow.

Q. What is the best A-frame camper?

  • The best A-frame campers tend to be made by specific companies. For example, we’ve included some well-known brands that provide quality campers. Some of them include Aliner, Jay Series, Flagstaff, and Chalet. However, we believe you should be more focused on the camper’s quality versus the name brands.

Q. Are frame campers any good?

  • A-frame campers are generally suitable for either individuals or a couple. However, they are not ideal for families. They tend to lack floor space and can become crowded with over two people. That being said, some A-frame campers are designed to hold more individuals. One example is the XL version, which can support up to seven people. Just keep in mind that it can ‘support’ seven people but may not do so ‘comfortably.’

Q. What is the largest A-frame camper?

  • One brand that tends to outdo themselves with creating extra-large campers is Aliner. They feature nine different A-frame campers that come in large sizes. The largest model spans over 18-feet long and includes multiple floor plans.

Another excellent brand is Chalet’s XL line. They feature multiple XL A-frame campers that span up to 18.7 feet. Not only that, but these campers are designed to be customizable and newer versions are continually being developed. You can’t do much better for the affordability and average weight of around 3,500 lbs.

Q. How much does an A-frame trailer weigh?

  • An A-frame camper generally weighs between 1,200 to 2,300 lbs. However, there are many brands of trailers that go beyond that. You can typically find A-frame campers ranging from 1,000 lbs to 3,500 lbs depending on the furniture and materials used.

We recommend that you don’t go anything over 3,000 lbs. Once you hit over that amount, your vehicle will begin to have trouble towing it. The more extensive options are always tempting, but unfortunately, they add additional weight.

A notable and attractive feature of the Airstream Flying Cloud 25FB is its natural light. You can also use the hatch to make loading and unloading more easy.

2. Bowlus Road Chief Endless Highways Luxury Travel Trailer

Bowlus Road Chief Endless Highways

If you’re looking for an aluminum-framed travel trailer that’s all luxury, and you have the budget to afford it, the Endless Highways model from Bowlus Road Chief is fancy as they come. The angular, cone-shaped nose of the trailer holds the true king-sized bed (convertible to two twins).

Moving back in the trailer, Bowlus has separated the shower and toilet into three rooms to make the space more versatile, with a large, hotel-style shower with amenities that’s finished in teak with Italian marine-grade fixtures.

The showerhead even extends outside, so that you can clean up in the great outdoors before stepping into the comfort of your camper. The toilet and vanity are also stored in separated areas for privacy and convenience.

The dinette area has comfortable seating for four, with charging stations underneath the table so that you can work from the road. The dinettes convert into two twin-sized beds by night for additional sleeping space.

In the spacious, modern galley, you’ll find a beautifully appointed cooking space with stainless steel counters, sink, and storage, including a mini fridge and a two-burner stove. The entry is over the hitch, to maximize wall space in this compact, lightweight aluminum travel trailer.

With a starting price of $190,000, this is by far the most expensive aluminum travel trailer on this list, but the quality construction and clever design certainly make it worth it.

  • 25,000 BTU boiler furnace
  • 10,000 BTU ducted A/C
  • Fresh Water: 19 gal
  • Gray Water: 21 gal
  • Black Water: 4.5 gal

3. Dutchmen Aerolite 2923BH Travel Trailer

Dutchmen Aerolite 2923BH

Dutchmen is a well-known name in the RV industry, and their Aerolite models are crafted with an aluminum frame and aluminum wheels to maintain lightweight construction.

There are nine floor plans available, but our pick is the 2923BH. This trailer is more comfortable for larger families, with a double bunkroom at the rear that can accommodate four people. The bathroom is next door, with a cleverly situated tub/shower, toilet and vanity.

In the main living area, there’s a tri-fold sofa and convertible dinette for additional sleeping space if needed, across from the entertainment center and fireplace.

The kitchen has a walk-in closet and pantry, 8 cu.ft. double door refrigerator, flush mount three-burner range, 21” oven, stainless steel microwave, double sink with a high-spout pull-out faucet, and spacious countertops beneath overhead storage cabinets.

The main bedroom at the front of the trailer has a queen-sized bed, two wardrobes and overhead cabinets for even more storage space.

  • Flush Mounted Glass Fireplace w/ 5K BTU Furnace
  • 13,500 BTU ducted A/C
  • Fresh Water: 50 gal
  • Gray Water: 67 gal
  • Black Water: 28 gal
  • Price: Starting at $24,995

4. Forest River Flagstaff Micro Lite 25FKBS Travel Trailer

Forest River Flagstaff Micro Lite 25FKBS

Perhaps the smallest aluminum travel trailer on this list, the Flagstaff Micro Lite 25FKBS trailer from Forest River is really only comfortable for two, since it doesn’t have a sofa bed, convertible dinette or bunkroom.

However, it is extremely spacious for a couple who wants to travel in comfort in a low-weight trailer, and you can switch out the 67-inch theater seat for a hide-a-bed sofa or a convertible dinette.

Forest River designs their Micro Lite campers for lighter weight, with six-sided aluminum cage framing for the trailer itself, as well as aluminum-framed beds, kitchen furniture, and storage compartments.

Forest River has nearly a dozen floorplans to choose from in their Micro Lite series, but we like the 25FKBS because of its queen bed slide, double entry, and thoughtfully-planned interior layout.

The master bedroom has a queen-sized bed in the side slide-out, a large wardrobe, and a small TV on a swiveling mount. The bathroom is in the middle of the trailer, with access from the bedroom and main living space.

A 67-inch theater seat rests in the living area slide-out, with an entertainment center across the way and the spacious kitchen in the front of the trailer.

The kitchen has a large refrigerator, pantry, double sink, three-burner stove, oven, microwave, and coat closet (which can be used as a pantry) next to the entry door. There’s a 19-foot power awning outside, which covers both entry doors.

  • 35,000 BTU ducted furnace
  • 13,500 BTU roof A/C
  • Fresh Water: 52 gal
  • Gray Water: 60 gal
  • Black Water: 30 gal
  • Price: Starting at $25,995

5. Forest River Rockwood Signature Ultra-Lite 8336BH

Forest River Rockwood Signature Ultra-Lite 8336BH

As you can see from this list so far, there are a few different aluminum travel trailer series from Forest River that have made our top picks list for the best aluminum travel trailers.

Their Rockwood Signature series offers seven different floorplans, and their models are excellent lightweight campers for towing with a half-ton pickup truck. The Ultra-Lite 8336BH is our top choice in Forest River’s Rockwood Signature series.

It has a bunkroom at the rear with three bunks and a TV center, and a side-slide queen-sized bed and wardrobe with washer/dryer prep in the front of the camper for the master bedroom.

There’s only one bathroom, but it’s conveniently placed within the floor plan and plenty spacious for accommodating the whole family.

In the main living space, there’s a 44-inch king U-shaped dinette and a 60-inch HAB sofa bed across from the angled entertainment center and fireplace.

The kitchen has a large stainless steel sink in an island in the middle of the room, with lots of countertop space, a three-burner cooktop, oven, microwave, fridge and pantry in the kitchen slide-out.

Overall, this camper has four slide outs. It also has an outdoor kitchen with a fridge, two-burner stove, and countertops so you can conveniently prepare your meal when cooking outside.

  • 13,500 BTU ducted A/C with 50 AMP service and prepped for second A/C
  • Fresh Water: 54 gal
  • Gray Water: 130 gal
  • Black Water: 50 gal
  • Price: Starting at $41,995

6. Forest River Sonoma 2404RB Travel Trailer

Forest River Sonoma 2404RB

There are nearly 20 different floorplans to choose from in Forest River’s Sonoma series, but our favorite is the 2404RB. It has a unique setup for the bathroom, with a full walk-in closet next to the space for the toilet, shower and sink.

The cooking and dining area makes up most of the main living space, with a convertible U-shaped dinette, pantry, refrigerator, three-burner cooktop, oven, microwave, and large island sink. Across from the sink, the tri-fold sofa can be converted into additional sleeping space.

At the front of the aluminum trailer, the bedroom has a queen-sized bed, dual wardrobes and shelving for your belongings, and even a laundry chute that empties into the pass-through storage below.

  • 20,000 BTU ducted furnace
  • Fresh Water: 56 gal
  • Gray Water: 41 gal
  • Black Water: 41 gal
  • Price: Starting at $31,900

7. Grand Design Imagine 2150RB Travel Trailer

Grand Design Imagine 2150RB

Another top name in RVs and travel trailers is Grand Design. Their Imagine 2150RB model is an excellent example of their manufacturing abilities with weight in mind.

The trailer has aluminum cage construction, with laminated aluminum framed walls, roof and floor. The entry is toward the back of the trailer, with a large, full bath taking up the full rear area.

The multi-functional chaise lounge dinette and removable table offer convenient dining and lounging in one space to maximize interior space.

In the kitchen area, there’s a pantry/wardrobe behind the entertainment center, a three-burner gas stove range with an oven and microwave, a double-door refrigerator, residential countertops with a flip-up countertop extension, and a stainless steel sink with a sink cover.

The Grand Design Imagine 2150RB has some special features designed to make life on the road more comfortable and convenient, such as shoe storage next to the entry, a pet dish below the refrigerator, and the chaise lounge dinette with its removable table.

The master bedroom is similar to some of the other aluminum travel trailers on this list, with a queen-sized bed, clothes storage and bedside tables, and overhead cabinets.

  • 35,000 BTU furnace
  • Gray Water: 82 gal
  • Black Water: 45 gal
  • Price: Starting at $36,137

8. Heartland Wilderness 2475BH Travel Trailer

Heartland 2475BH

Like the Dutchmen Aerolite 2923BH, the Wilderness 2475BH model aluminum travel trailer from Heartland has a spacious double bunk at the back. However, this trailer has two queen-sized bunks for a little bit more space.

At 6,900 pounds GVWR, this trailer is also one of the more lightweight models on this list. It has aluminum framing and a fiberglass skin.

Inside, the main living area makes up the heart of the trailer. It has a U-shaped convertible dinette, pantry, 10.7 cu.ft. fridge with double doors, three-burner stove and oven, and a double, deep bowl kitchen sink with a pull-out faucet. There’s even a kids doodle station to keep them busy while you cook.

The bedroom is standard, with a queen-sized bed (king sized bed option available) and clothes storage. The Heartland Wilderness 2475BH’s outdoor space is pretty great, as well.

There’s a 14-foot awning, 12 volt AM/FM/CD with indoor/outdoor speakers, and an outdoor kitchen with a two-burner stove (grill optional).

  • 30,000 BTU furnace
  • 13,500 BTU A/C
  • Fresh Water: 45 gal
  • Gray Water: 40 gal
  • Price: Starting at $35,718

9. KZ RV Connect C332BHK Lightweight Travel Trailer

KZ RV Connect C332BHK

KZ RV has several floorplans for their Connect series of travel trailers, which all have laminated sidewalls constructed with aluminum framing and high density solid block insulation. The C332BHK floorplan is very spacious, featuring two bedrooms, two bathrooms, and lots of extra highlights.

The second bedroom sits at the rear of the trailer, with two 50-inch by 75-inch double bunk beds, a wardrobe, dresser, and private half-bath.

It also has its own exit/entry door. In the main living area, this aluminum travel trailer has a 70-inch sofa, convertible dinette and an entertainment center with a 30-inch fireplace.

There’s a large island in the center of the space with a deep, undermount stainless steel sink, and full kitchen setup with an 8 cu.ft. fridge, three-burner cooktop, oven, microwave and pantry.

Ingenuity and a mind for space clearly went into planning the layout of the main bathroom, which features a corner shower, toilet, small vanity and even a mini closet.

The master bedroom is at the front of the trailer, with a king-sized bed (standard) and two wardrobes.  Outside, the KZ RV Connect C332BHK has an 18-foot awning and an outdoor kitchen with a mini fridge, griddle, and countertop prep space.

  • Price: Starting at $49,165
