• Attending the Light & Sound Show at Cellular Jail: Cellular Jail in Port Blair is among the must-visit attractions in Andaman. For kids, this is the best historical place to learn the history. The light & sound includes a Peepal tree’s narration, voiced by the veteran actor Om Puri, telling the poignant stories of the prisoners tortured to death in the jail. The timing is Tuesday – Sunday; 8:45 am – 12:30 pm & 1:45 pm – 5 pm.

Where is the Andaman and Nicobar Islands in India?

These islands are one of the eight union territories of India and are located in the Bay of Bengal. The group of islands is around 1300 km east of the Indian mainland.

Brief history of Andamans

There is archaeological evidence that these Indian islands have been inhabited for over 2,200 years. In fact, there are studies that trace the original human inhabitation to the current indigenous tribes of Andamans including the Andamanese, Nicobarese, and Shompen . However, there is nothing very significant in terms of historical events known about them.

The strategic location of these islands had made it an important naval point for many Indian rulers like the Chola dynasty . There are mentions of Ma-Nakkavaram or the great naked islands in some of the inscriptions found in Thanjavu r. King Rajendra Chola II in fact, used the islands to launch an attack against the Indonesian Srivijaya empire.

It was finally occupied by the Europeans in 1755 with the Danish East India Company taking it over. The British East India Company later, took over in 1789. They colonized it – first at Chatham Island and later moving it to Port Blair in 1858. This was the place used for the exile of the Indian freedom fighters during the Indian independence movement.

World War II saw a brief change of power when the Japanese took over. Later, the islands were returned to British control in 1945 and finally, transferred to India in 1950. Today, it is one of the eight Union territories of India and also, one of the best-kept secrets for travelers.

Facts about Andaman and Nicobar Islands, India

It would not be wrong to say that this Indian archipelago is quite enigmatic. Most travelers to India do not even consider it for a visit and for the ones in India, not much is known. Here are some interesting Andaman and Nicobar Islands information that will help familiarize you with the place. These Andaman facts will also, increase the wanderlust quotient.

• Do you know how many islands are there in Andaman and Nicobar archipelago? Well, there are 571 islands of which only 37 are inhabited by humans. They are broadly classified into North and Middle Andaman islands, South Andaman and Nicobar islands. The Andaman group is separated from the Nicobar group by the Ten Degree Channel.
• Andaman and Nicobar islands also, finds a mention in the accounts of Marco Polo. He called the Nicobar as Necuverann while the Tamil rulers called it Nakkavaram .
• The names – Andaman and Nicobar are believed to have originated from the Malay language . Andaman is derived from Handuman – the name for Lord Hanuman while Nicobar is said to have come in from Nakkavaram (the Tamil name).
• One of the oldest and the most isolated tribes in the world – Sentinelese live on the North Sentinel island. They are not fond of humans and tend to shoot down visitors who attempt to land there. It is believed that there are 300 of them and they have lived here for almost 60,000 years. Definitely not one of those places to visit in Andamans 😉
• India’s only active volcano is on Barren Island which is a part of Andamans.
• The old Indian Rupee 20 has a picture of the Andaman Islands on it.
• Nicobar Islands is the nesting ground for the World’s largest turtles – The Leatherback turtles.
• Nicobar Islands also, yields a rare fruit called Pandunus or Nicobar Breadfruit . Not only is the fruit edible but parts of the plant are used for construction, mats and even a bathing brush.
• Have you heard of the Coconut crabs? They are the World’s largest crabs and are found in Andamans. These huge creatures are also called as Robber crabs.
• Last but not the least – the islands are actually closer to the Sumatra Islands in Indonesia (150 km) than the Indian mainland. They are also closer to Myanmar or Burma, just 180 km.

Tips to plan a trip to Andaman and Nicobar Islands

What is the best way to reach andaman.

Let’s begin the main section of this Andaman and Nicobar travel guide with the best way to get to this Union territory of India. Port Blair is the headquartre or capital of this archipelago with its own airport and port. Earlier there were two ways to get to Port Blair – by flight or by ship . However, now the Andaman travel by ship has become almost nil and there is no alternative but to take a flight to the Veer Savarkar airport in Port Blair.

There are now direct flights from Chennai, Bangalore, Hyderabad and Kolkata to Port Blair. Having said that I must warn you that there are limited flights to Port Blair and the air tickets for the same need to be booked well in advance to beat the last-minute exorbitant rates. Chennai and Kolkata have the maximum flights to Port Blair.

There are not many Andaman and Nicobar flights from Delhi and Mumbai. You might find one weekly direct flight but the rest are all flights with a layover.

To boost Andaman and Nicobar tourism, there are always additional special flights during the peak seasons – October to May . I would recommend keeping a price alert on these flights so that you can grab the best deal on the airfare, especially if there is a sale going on.

What is the best time to visit Andaman Nicobar?

October to February is generally considered the best time to visit Andamans. This is when the weather is cooler and you can enjoy the gentle waves of the beach without any issue. March and April tend to get quite warm but you can still enjoy the islands and its activities without any hitch.

Avoid the Andaman trip after the 2 nd week of May right to mid-September . This is when the monsoons begin on the islands. The islands are prone to heavy rain and thunderstorms. You might even have to watch out for cyclones during this month. A lot of inter-island travel becomes limited owing to the stormy sea.

Andaman travel guidelines and permits

During my earlier Andaman trip in 2018, there were certain permits that were required for Andamans – mainly because it was a Union territory and a tribal area. This was largely for Foreign Nationals who required a Restricted Area Permit (RAP). To boost Andaman and Nicobar island tourism, this restriction has now been lifted and all foreigners (except those from Pakistan, Afghanistan and China) can visit Port Blair as well as the other popular Andaman islands freely.

There are a few offbeat islands like Baratang Island that require you to travel with a convoy as you travel through tribal areas. There are specific timings for these that I have written about in this post .

 A few others like the Jolly Buoy island have permits as only a certain number of boats are allowed to go at a time. These permits need to taken in advance from the Andaman tourism office at Aberdeen Jetty in Port Blair.

How to do Island hopping between the best Andaman islands?

With over 500 islands, you can pretty much expect to do a lot of Island hopping. I would categorize this activity into two buckets – the first are the Islands where you stay and the second are islands that you visit as a day trip.

In this section of the Andaman and Nicobar travel guide, I will be sharing tips on how to reach these Andaman tourist places.

Best stay islands to be included in your Andamans trip plan

Port Blair is the headquarters and the main island that you will land in when you visit Andamans. Consider this as your home base. It is from here that you will be visiting all the other islands on this list.

The two islands besides Port Blair that you should consider staying in are Havelock Island (now called Swaraj Dweep ) and Neil Island (presently called Shaheed Dweep). These islands can only be accessed via a ferry from Port Blair. The ferries or liners are run by Government as well as Private operators. Earlier when I had visited, one could not pre-book the government ferries. You would need to go to Phoenix Jetty in Port Blair to stand in the queues before the departure.

However, this has changed in the recent years and you can book these Ferries online through this link . The price for the same is around 600 – 850 per seat for a ticket to Swaraj Dweep from Port Blair. The above website has the fares for all the other destinations. Government ferries are usually used by the locals and have limited tourist seats.

There are three main private operators for inter-island ferries – Makruzz, Nautica and Green Ocean . Of these, Makruzz is the most recommended. I used it to travel to Swaraj Dweep island when I visited Andamans.

Very comfortable seating and easy to book as you can do so online through here . It is advisable to book the seats as soon as it opens as the same gets filled very fast. Typically the booking opens two weeks before your scheduled date of departure. Alternately get your hotel in Havelock or Port Blair to help you with the booking.

There are very limited timings and cruises available to these islands – typically just four a day.

Andaman tour plan for the day trip islands  

There are many islands around Port Blair that you can visit as a day trip. All you have to do is head to Aberdeen jetty to pick an operator and book instantly. Most hotels help you with the booking as well, so that you do not have to waste too much time.

The boat operators typically offer you packages that include two – three islands and you can book at your convenience. There are group boats where you travel with other people as well as private boat hires. Ross Island, North Bay Island, Jolly Buoy etc are some places to visit in Andamans as a day trip.

One thing to note is that some islands like Jolly Buoy Island need a special permit . Only a limited number of people can go at a time to these islands. You will need to get this permit in advance from the Tourism Department counters at Aberdeen Jetty.

Where to stay in the Andamans? (Hotels in Andamans)

As mentioned earlier, the three main islands in Andamans that I recommend for a stay are  – Port Blair, Havelock Island and Neil Island.

Port Blair has plenty of options in all possible budgets for you to pick from. Being a small town, you can pick your stay anywhere here and you are likely to find the key attractions close to your hotel. I personally, picked Hotel Western Park at Delanipur Junction and found it quite convenient. Middle Point is another area close to this one that I found interesting – not too crowded but had enough shops and restaurants to keep you comfortable.

Havelock and Neil Island, on the other hand, have limited stay options. Given that, they are naturally more expensive than the hotels in Port Blair. In fact, budget the cost of the stay on these islands into your Andaman trip cost.

I highly recommend booking these hotels in advance. Both – Havelock and Neil are small islands and most of the accommodation is by the beaches. You can stay on any of these beaches as they are all just amazing! On my trip, I stayed on the Vijaynagar beach in Wild Orchid Resort – a cute, small property with lovely wooden cottages and very comfortable beds. A luxury stay here as well as on Neil Island is the Barefoot resort . On Havelock, this island is on the famed Radhanagar beach.

You can book most of these hotels online when you plan your trip to Andamans. One tip that I recommend is that once you have booked your hotel, call them up and reconfirm your booking.

How to go around on the islands in Andaman? (Conveyance and transport)

Port Blair has plenty of options for your internal travel – hiring a 2-wheeler, cabs and auto rickshaws . A lot of travel companies attach themselves to you from the time you arrive. For travel within Port Blair, you can just use auto-rickshaws. You might plan on visiting places in Andaman and Nicobar Islands that are a little far off from Port Blair but manageable by road . Chidiya Tapu and Baratang Island are some examples. For these, it is best to hire a cab.

In Havelock Islands, there are no auto rickshaws and cabs on call. You have to rely on your hotel to help you with one. Alternatively, you can do what we did. We took the number of the cabbie who we found at the jetty when we reached Havelock. Whenever we required him, we would just call him. For the rest of the time, we hired a 2 wheeler and rode around ourselves. This really works well if you are attempting to plan a budget trip to Andaman.

Neil Island is even smaller than Havelock Islands and you do not really need a vehicle to move around.

What to eat in Andamans?

You get a good mix of Bengali and South Indian cuisines in Andaman. At Havelock and Port Blair, you have plenty of continental food options too. If you are a foodie, you will absolutely love the choice of shacks and restaurants at Havelock. From Chinese to continental and Indian, they sure know how to reach your heart through your stomach. Two of my favorite places here are Anju-Coco Resto and Something Different .

Neil Island, on the other hand, has a limited choice of restaurants. You might just have to rely on the food provided in the hotel that you have booked.

Mobile connectivity and Wi- Fi – an essential tip in the travel guide to Andaman.

Back in 2018, there was a very limited Wi-Fi or cellular data service. Some places in Andaman like the Baratang Island and Havelock Island were almost no-signal zones. Airtel worked the best there. Even with that, I had to keep roaming around to get that one blip of signals. Booking hotels back then was also, difficult owing to this issue. Of course, the signal free zone had its perks too – like a distraction free holiday.

However, things changed after PM Modi visited Andaman and Nicobar islands. Within months, cables were laid underwater from Chennai and today, you have 4G and in some cases, 5G connectivity on the key Andaman islands . Again, Airtel and BSNL work the best. Jio still has an issue and it is best not to rely on it.

Paying for various activities in Andamans

There are plenty of ATMs available in Port Blair and Havelock . Neil Island too, has one or two of them. However, it is best to carry some cash from the start as during my visit, I found a lot of ATMs out of cash in Havelock.

With good mobile connectivity, these days UPI apps like Google Pay and PayTM also, work well. You can use these payment modes during your trip to Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

Best Places to Visit in Andaman and Nicobar Islands

Now this can be a long long list but here are the ones that I highly recommend that you should include in your Andaman tour plan. I have also, written separate and detailed posts on a few of these Andaman tourist attractions, the links of which are included in the respective sections.

As I mentioned earlier, Port Blair going to be your base in Andaman and Nicobar island. Here are some of the key places that you must visit when in the city.

• The Cellular Jail in Port Blair  – for its melancholic history and really unusual architecture. The stories within the walls can really chill you but also, interest and excite you. I also, recommend going in for their light and sound show. You can check this place out in detail through this post .
• Corbyn’s Cove – a beach on the capital island where you can indulge in water sports – including parasailing and jet-skiing. However, I recommend this only if you are not heading to Havelock Island
• Samundrika Museum – I am yet to write about this one but it is a small stop that helps you discover the cultural and biodiversity of these islands. It is managed by the Navy.
• Anthropology Museum – Andamans is native to a lot of tribals and discovering their lifestyle is quite enlightening. No pictures were allowed here and hence, describing it all might be difficult. With mock tribal huts, exhibits of their food vessels, their tools and clothes and explanations of their festivities, I found time short for this museum

Chidiya Tapu

This is a day trip from Port Blair. At a distance of 30 km. Chidiya Tapu is the place to experience the best sunsets in Andaman. For bird watchers, the island is a paradise with tons of migratory and native birds . The native birds include rare species of woodpeckers, Andaman green pigeons and woodswallows. There are tons of hiking trails and picnic spots  – in short, a perfect day trip with nature.

Ross Island or Subhash Chandra Bose Island

Ross Island is an island that leaves you wanting for more. With its overgrown root structures, old dilapidated buildings, green pastures and herds of friendly deer, you will find that time is not enough.  The island was initially used by the British as a residential base, which they later shifted to Port Blair. It is one of those Andaman islands that has to be done as a day trip from Port Blair . Check out how I became Lara Croft here .

North Bay island

The North Bay island is one of those Andaman tourist places that comes in combination with a visit to Ross Island. You can get to this island via the Aberdeen Jetty in Port Blair. The place is famous for water sports and you can even do scuba diving here.

Chatham Mills

Another one of those day trips from Port Blair where you can visit an ancient mill with history that leads back to World War II and the British.. This is where the first settlement of the British started with Archibald Blair. The Chatham Saw Mills is the oldest and possibly, the largest saw mill in Asia.

Note however, you can only visit it between 8.00 AM to 2.30 PM on all days except for Mondays and Thursdays.

Jolly Buoy Island

Remember – this is one island that has limited number of permits for boats. You can visit it from Wandoor Beach after you have got a permit from the tourism office. Personally, I feel it is one of the best Andaman islands with its unspoiled nature, crystal-clear water and colorful reefs.

Baratang Island

Baratang Island is one of those places that requires you to enjoy its unusual journey. I absolutely adored it – for its limestone caves, the mangrove forests and the whole experience of going in a convoy to reach the islands. You can also visit the bubbling mud volcano on this island. It is another day trip that needs to taken from Port Blair. It can be booked online through this link .

Ross and Smith Islands in North Andamans

The approach to this group of two islands was a little difficult in the past. However, now a new bridge and road is being built. The waters around these two islands are perfect for snorkeling – in fact a delight with the lovely coral world. What makes this visit unique is that if you reach here during low tides, you can actually cross over from one island to the other by wading in water.

Havelock Island (Swaraj Dweep)

You cannot plan a trip to Andaman without including Havelock Island . The place was my little heaven with its crystal blue water and unspoiled beaches. If there is a place that I want to retire to right now, Havelock it will be. This is where you need to spend at least 2 – 3 nights.

Not only is it perfect for families but it is one of those recommended places to visit in Andaman for a honeymoon. It is home to one of India’s Blue Flag beaches – Radhanagar Beach . This island is the best place to do scuba diving in Andamans. In fact, you can even do a PADI course during your three-day stay in Havelock island. Read more about this gorgeous island in this post.

Neil Island (Shaheed Dweep)

You cannot plan a honeymoon trip to Andaman without including Neil Island. It is another piece of Paradise where you can stay and engage in some water sports. The secluded air and the divine landscape of blue waters with artistic rocks adds that aura of serenity to the whole Andaman trip.

Water sports in Andamans

Andamans offers you plenty of options for water sports. It is best known for scuba diving – which I highly recommend that you include in your Andaman trip plan. You can even enjoy a half-submarine ride or do a sea walk . They have even got the self-ride seakart activity that I have so far experienced only in Mauritius (and I loved it!)

Snorkeling, jet skiing, banana boat rides, parasailing are available in plenty. Remember to engage with certified PADI instructors for Scuba Diving . The best options are available at Havelock. There are plenty of dive schools here, one almost every 100 m. On my last visit, the shore dives started at INR 2500 and the boat dives started at INR 3500.

All these activities can be arranged by your hotels or you can even do it yourself by reaching an island and engaging an operator who has a shop on it. The rates for the same are pretty standard and are displayed at the entrance of a shop. Please ensure you listen to all the instructions carefully and keep safe while engaging in these water sports.

What kind of Andaman Travel Package is available for planning a trip? And should you go for one?

There are two types of travel packages for Andamans available – standard and custom. The standard packages like this one include hotels and transport including the ferries between the islands. However, they do not have day-to-day activities as a part of their deal. These can be booked online. They may not have air travel included.

The customized Andaman travel packages are designed to suit your taste. There are several tour companies like Mini India that help you with this. They can even organize the activities and help you with the permits on Andaman islands. You can even ask them to book your air tickets.

Tour packages definitely help you cut down time on booking hotels and transport in Andaman. From my experience, booking ferries, different hotels on the islands does take a lot of time and involves a lot of follow-up. It is not difficult because I did it all by myself but if you are a busy and do not have the time to research, compare and book on your own – then go for the packages.

Is it safe to travel to andamans.

Andamans is a very safe place to travel – for solo travelers, families as well as couples. The islands have a low crime rate as there is literally no place for anyone to hide. The islands are small and movement between them is restricted and well-tracked.

Are there any direct Mumbai to Andaman and Nicobar Islands flights?

At the moment, there is no direct flight from Mumbai to Port Blair. One has to take a flight with a layover from Mumbai. There may be special flights announced during the peak season.

How many days are enough for Andaman?

I would recommend at least 5 nights and 6 days of Andaman trip plan to enjoy the key islands.

Can I plan an Andaman trip on my own?

Yes, it is possible as well as quite easy to plan an Andaman trip on your own. Andamans and the North East of India are some of the places that still retain their pristine charm owing to lesser tourist footfalls. But it indeed is a Catch-22 situation, and soon we could see hordes of tourists overrunning these places. I didn’t know exactly were Andaman and Nicobar islands were until know. Of course I didn’t know as well they are Indian islands, from the map it could seem they belong to Malaysia or Myanmar. Andamans is a great place for vacation. The beaches reminds one about the beaches of Western Thailand. We didn’t go for for a scuba dive in Andamans.

Your post made me nostalgic about my visit to Andaman and Nicobar few years ago. I only liked Havelock Island and did my first scuba diving and snorkeling there. Though I didn’t like Neil Island. It was a total disaster. In Port Blair, I only liked Cellular Jail and its evening light show.

Your scuba diving pics made me nostalgic about my trip to Andaman islands when my father was the Secretary Tourism in the islands. I did water sports, drove water scooter, snorkeling and scuba diving. While diving, i touched the base of the shallow part of the ocean (around 6 meter) and was so proud of myself! Andaman Itinerary For 6 Days

The far-flung archipelago of Andaman & Nicobar Islands consists of 572 islands, out of which only 37 are inhabited. The islands of Nicobar are off-limits to tourists, and we can only visit a few islands in Andaman. Located in the Bay of Bengal off the eastern coast of India , the Andaman Islands are a sight to behold. Sun-kissed beaches, azure waters, exhilarating water activities, intriguing history, and abundant natural beauty are just a few of the reasons to visit this tropical paradise. Additional attractions include spectacular sunsets, limestone caves, mangrove rainforests, and abundant marine life. In fact, it is an excellent destination for scuba divers and snorkelers as it is home to a plethora of vibrant coral and exotic marine life. This itinerary will take you through the most inhabited and exciting areas of the Andaman Islands.

Suggested Andaman Itinerary for 6 Days

Day 1 of andaman itinerary: port blair.

The only way to get to the remote islands is to fly into Port Blair. Direct flights are available from Delhi , Kolkata, Mumbai , and Chennai to Veer Sarvankar International Airport in Port Blair. Check the flights and connectivity before planning your vacation, as the timetable changes randomly. In Port Blair, there isn’t much to do. However, Cellular jail should be on your agenda. The Cellular Jail, also known as Kala Pani, was a colonial prison that housed several prominent Indian freedom fighters. The horrifying stories of brutality and depravity are sure to have a sobering effect. There is also a light and sound show in the evening (6 pm-7 pm). If you have time left, you can go to the coconut palm-fringed Corbyn Beach and watch a scenic sunset. Enjoy a leisurely meal and spend the night in Port Blair.

Day 2 of Andaman Itinerary: Havelock and Radhanagar Beach

To get to Havelock (Swaraj Deep Island), you can use a seaplane, a government-operated ferry, or a private ferry. Choose Markuzz Ferries for your ferry transfer since they are spacious and comfortable Catamarans. They offer air conditioning, nice seats, clean restrooms, and a small snack bar. The trip will take about 1.5 hours and will cost close to Rs1400 ($20) one way. If you can’t get tickets in Markuzz, you’ll have to use Green Ocean Ferries, Aashi, Sea Link, or government-operated boats, which are cheaper but have subpar facilities and may take longer.

During this trip, we plan to spend as much time as possible on Havelock Island, which is noted for its clean beaches , lush green forests, and rich underwater treasure. Take the morning ferry (departs from Haddo Jetty) to Havelock and get off at Swaraj Deep Jetty. To get to your hotel, you’ll need to take a taxi/auto from there. Check into your hotel and spend the rest of the day at Radhanagar Beach. The secluded beach is located on the western coast of Havelock Island. The Radhanagar Beach (Beach 7) is ranked among Asia’s top ten most gorgeous beaches, and you’ll see why when you visit. The crescent-shaped beach spans 2 kilometers and has an average width of 30 to 40 meters.  Velvety sand, excellent waves, emerald waters, picturesque sunset, and scarce crowds make this beach a perfect place to relax and enjoy. There are no water sports on the beach. Taj Exotica Resort & Spa is a 1-minute walk from the famed beach. If you can afford the upscale resort, go for it. 

Day 3 of Andaman Itinerary: Elephant Beach, Havelock

Today we are going to visit Elephant Beach. A small cruise boat will take you to Elephant Beach from the Swaraj Deep Jetty in less than 30 minutes. The round-trip ferry would cost Rs1000 ($14) per person. It leaves you there for three hours, and you are free to do whatever you choose during that time. The same jetty will bring you back after the allotted time.  Another way to reach Elephant Beach is by trekking. The trail begins at the Forest Camp, which is located 8 kilometers from the jetty. Because the trail runs through dense rainforests, it is recommended that you bring an escort with you on the one-hour trek. You can get a guide for 500 rupees (USD 8). The guide will accompany you to Elephant Beach, assist you while you are there, and bring you back to the Forest Camp. Keep in mind that if you go trekking, you must return the same way you came. You will not be able to go back on the ferry.

Havelock’s Elephant Beach is a great place to go snorkeling. The crystal-clear water, rich coral reef formations, and amazing marine life near the coast provide for an unforgettable snorkeling experience. You’re going to have the time of your life if you love water activities. There’s Jet skiing, banana boats, an underwater sea walk, parasailing, and a slew of other water activities. Except for snorkeling (Rs1500) and parasailing (Rs3250), most of the activities cost Rs600. Elephant Beach is quite crowded and extensively commercialized. If you are not interested in water sports, you can skip going there and spend the day at other beaches such as Beach 2, 3, and 7. The last boat leaves Elephant Beach by 3 p.m. The rest of the day is free to do whatever you choose. If you’re in the mood to venture out again, Beach 2 and 3 have some nice restaurants and beach shacks.

PS: If you want to do scuba diving in Havelock, arrange a morning excursion so you can return in time to explore Elephant Beach. Scuba diving will take around two hours to complete. The diving establishments are located at Govindnagar Beach No. 2, which is quite close to the Jetty. Remember that the last ferry to Elephant Beach departs from the jetty at noon and make your plans accordingly. You’ll have a long day ahead of you, but scuba diving in Havelock is highly recommended.

  Day 4 of Andaman Itinerary:  Neil Island

Today we are going to leave for Neil Island (Shaheed Dweep). The Markuzz ferry from Havelock Jetty to Neil Island Jetty leaves at 10 a.m. and takes one hour. Neil Island is smaller than Havelock and has laid-back vibes. The island was inhabited only in the 1960s and has been slowly rising on the popularity charts due to its unexplored coral reefs, picturesque beaches, amazing biodiversity, and lush forests. There are three main beaches in Neil Islands – Sitapur Beach, Bharatpur Beach, and Laxmanpur Beach. Nestled between tropical forests and clear turquoise seas, the beaches look spectacular. Each one of them has its charm.

The sea around Bharatpur Beach is full of corals and schools of fish. It is the only place in the Neil Islands where you can enjoy water sports. However, snorkeling and scuba diving can be enjoyed on all three beaches. Sitapur Beach is also called “Sunrise Beach” as it offers spectacular sunrise views in the morning. The beach is known for its limestone formations. Laxmanpur Beach is a broad spur of white shell sand and you can find an abundance of corals and shells in the shallow, clear waters. The Natural Bridge, also called Howrah Bridge by the locals, is the highlight of Laxmanpur Beach. The bridge is made of natural rock formations. Most of the resorts on Neil Island are located on Bharatpur Beach. Stay overnight on Neil Island.

PS: You can go to Kalapathar Beach early in the morning before leaving for Neil Island to see a breathtaking sunrise. The beach is located on the southern side of Havelock and is approximately 6.5 kilometers from the jetty. It is easily accessible by car, taxi, or bike.

Day 5 of Andaman Itinerary: Port Blair and Ross Island

It is now time to return to Port Blair. The Markuzz Ferry, which runs from Neil to Port Blair, departs at 11:30 a.m. and takes one hour. On reaching Port Blair, we are going to visit Ross Island. The tiny island is only a kilometer from Port Blair and is easily accessible through a 15-minute boat ride from the Aberdeen jetty. The island closes at 3 p.m. for day visitors, so plan. You can still visit the island if you don’t get there in time for the last boat. Ferries depart at 4 p.m. for the light and sound display, which begins at 5:30 p.m. Tickets must be purchased three days in advance. Ross Island is closed on Wednesdays.

For nearly a century, Ross Island served as the administrative headquarters for the Indian Penal Settlement. It had all the modern comforts procured by the Britishers until an earthquake struck the island in 1942. The ruins of a church, a bakery, a museum, a jail, a cemetery, and several other structures are scattered all over the island. Ross Island (recently named Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Island) exudes a rustic and one-of-a-kind charm.  What impresses you the most is the myriad flora and fauna that can be found on the serene island. It is home to deer, peacocks, and a variety of other birds. The trees have reclaimed the island and wrapped their roots around the crumbling ruins, creating an eerie and intriguing sight. There are no cars allowed on the island, but you can explore the island in a golf cart if you don’t want to walk. Return to Port Blair for dinner and a night’s stay.

Day 6 of Andaman Itinerary: Fly Back

The flight to your next destination would most likely depart in the morning. Pack your belongings and head to the airport. It’s time to say goodbye to the Andamans.

PS: If you have an extra day, you can plan a visit to Baratang Island. However, be prepared for a long and exhausting day. I felt that it was not worth going to Baratang Island. 

Things to know before visiting Andamans

• The best time to visit Andamans is between November and March. The months of April and May can be quite warm, particularly in the afternoons. The weather begins to heat up and become humid in the following months. Monsoon is from June to September , so avoiding that season is better. March to June – 22°C to 33°C, June to September – 27°C to 30°C, October to Feb – 20°C to 30°C
• Although the islands are in the same time zone as Bangkok, they follow Indian Standard Time. As a result, the day begins very early. Go to bed on time so that you can wake up early to make the most of the light.
• Ferries must be reserved in advance because they are the sole way to travel between islands. All your carefully laid-out plans will go haywire if you can’t find a suitable ferry.
• Only private ferries can be booked online and in advance. Government ferry tickets can only be purchased at the counter two days before the trip.
• Boarding closes approximately 20 minutes before departure. Before that, you have to get your luggage scanned and your tickets verified.
• Bring sunscreen, sunglasses, caps, an umbrella, flip-flops, a swimsuit, cover-ups, and mosquito repellent with you.
• The locals are straightforward, honest, and trustworthy.

• Getting vegetarian food is not a problem in Andamans.
• The mobile network is extremely patchy, with no connectivity on smaller islands. For a stable connection, you need to rely on the hotel’s WIFI. The WIFI is sometimes only accessible in the hotel’s lobby.
• Big hotels accept cards, but you’ll need cash for cabs, small eateries, tickets, and a variety of other small transactions. Payments with Digital Wallets are also accepted in many places.
• Although there is no Uber or Ola in the Andamans, taxis are easily available. They usually have a set fare for each route and don’t bargain much. You will be offered package deals by most of the taxi drivers you come across.
• Auto rickshaws are easily accessible on all Andaman Islands. Because the distances are short, it makes sense to choose this less expensive method of transportation.
• Most beaches close at 5 p.m., and this is strictly enforced by the lifeguards patrolling the beaches.
• If you are daring enough to kayak through the mangroves at night in Havelock, you will be able to view the bioluminescent plankton that makes the water shimmer every time the paddle dips in the water. The waters are said to be home to a few crocodiles, so go at your own risk.
• Foreign visitors to the Andaman Islands are no longer required to get a “Restricted Area Permit” as of July 2018. Foreign visitors with a valid Indian tourist visa can now visit the Andaman Islands and stay for the duration of their visa.
• Onge, Jarawa, Sentinelese, and Andamanese are the four tribes that live on Andaman. They can be fiercely hostile. Do not make interaction with tribals. It is strictly prohibited by the Indian government and is a punishable offense. This is the most effective way to cut off them from the modern world and allow them to carry on with their age-old traditions.

Must Know Before Visiting Andaman

• Port Blair, the capital of this union territory, has a major airport and seaport connected with the rest of the country and with various tourist islands via multiple daily ferries.

Places to Visit in Andaman

Radhanagar Beach: Awarded with the title of 'Asia's Best Beach' by the TIMES magazine in 2004, Radhanagar Beach in Havelock Island with its turquoise blue waters and powdery white sands lives up to the moniker. Its vast shores of endless white grains stretch across 2 kilometres, making it a prime attraction of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Cellular Jail: The Cellular Jail, also known as 'Kala Pani' is an old colonial prison situated in Port Blair. Constructed by the Britishers during their colonial rule in India, the jail was used particularly to exile Indian political prisoners. The jail complex is now owned by the Government of India and it is recognised as the national memorial monument that showcases the life of prisoners during the British era. A light and sound show is held here every evening. Ross Island: Ross Island is an uninhabited island, located just 2 kilometres east of Port Blair. At first sight of the island, it is tough to believe that this abandoned place was once the seat of British power and housed everything from a bazaar, a church, stores, bakery, a water treatment plant, tennis court, printing press, secretariat, hospital, cemetery and other vital institutions. Today, everything has disappeared except a few buildings, which housed some of these landmarks. The prime attraction here is the Japanese Bunker and a light and sound show conducted every evening.  Elephant Beach: With its brilliant coral reefs and alluring cyan waters, the Elephant beach is a prime destination for tourists wishing to engage in watersports like snorkelling, swimming, banana boat rides, speed boats and diving. For those who are here to relax, the beach offers some exciting food and drink options while one lounges leisurely on the sands. One could also engage in other adventurous activities like bird-watching, trekking and kayaking.  North Bay Island: North Bay Island in Andaman is most preferred by tourists for its breathtaking coral reefs and exhilarating adventure activities. This island competes with some of the most beautiful islands all over the world when it comes to attracting tourists. Activities like scuba diving, snorkelling, sea walking, and glass boat rides are what allures tourists the most. You will find more things to do here than at Neil Island or Havelock. Neil Island: Neil Island is a part of the South Andaman Administrative District. A part of the massive ocean separates it from Ross Island and Havelock Island. Tourists visiting Havelock often make a day-long trip to Neil Island. Perhaps the most endearing feature of this island is its three sandy beaches, namely Bharatpur Beach, Sitapur Beach and Lakshmanpur Beach. Due to its limited area, Neill Island can be covered with a simple walk. All three beaches are exquisite and extraordinarily clean and are well-connected to the mainland as well. Chidiya Tapu: Known as the bird island, Chidiya Tapu is a picturesque little island in the Andamans, located around 25 kms from Port Blair. While birdwatching is the main allure of the location, there are some fun water activities like snorkelling, scuba diving, deep-sea walking, pearl hunting, and boating that one could engage in along its shores. The Sunset point of the island is considered one of the best sunset points in the Andamans. A trekking trail is also available here. Corbyn’s Cove Beach: Corbyn's Cove is the nearest beach to Port Blair. The facilities for water sports are also not as impressive as many other beaches in Andaman and Nicobar Islands. But if one wants to, they can go Jet Skiing or go on a short boat ride into the sea. Certain parts of the Corbyn’s Cove Beach have some seating arrangement to get a good view of the horizon from a little height. There are some shacks that sell local snacks, drinks, coconut water etc.  Viper Island: Years before Cellular Jail was constructed, Viper Island was used by the British to keep the freedom fighters in exile. You can still see the remains of the jail which was built in 1867 by the British. It is located at a distance of 10 minutes ferry ride from Port Blair. On the way to the island, you will also come across the main port and the navy ships of Port Blair. You can also enjoy the view of the cellular jail and its tower from the boat.  Havelock Island: Havelock Island is one of the largest and most popular isles in the Andaman and Nicobar group of islands.  The southern coast of the island has the charming Radhanagar Beach, while the azure beauty of Vijayanagar Beach is situated towards the east of the island. We did the Andaman Islands trip and can tell that; you will not get bored for a second. Every day and evening you will be either exploring some amazing beaches, hopping islands, roaming around in the city, visiting historical places & museums, or doing something extraordinary activities like scuba diving, snorkeling, bird watching, hiking, and whatnot!

Here’s the best of Andaman itinerary for 7 days covering a variety of beaches and islands, every island is unique and different from the others with so many things to do and places to see by keeping the balance of relaxation, adventure, fun, leisure time, exploration of history & culture. You won’t believe it, we ended up thinking 7 days are not enough and we will be planning to cover those off-beat destinations in our next trip.

Best of Andaman itinerary for 7 days as follows:

Day 1: Arrival in Port Blair & visit Cellular Jail

Port Blair is the capital city & entry point to Andaman and Nicobar Islands, reached by Air or Sea, from where you will get several options to explore the entire island. We preferred to fly down at Veer Savarkar International Airport, Port Blair, located just outside the city.

You will be fascinated by seeing the first glimpse of islands from the flight just before the landing, so keep your mobile ready to click pictures. The airport is small and basic, easy to get outside and find a taxi or auto.

We always try to reach the destination in the morning or till afternoon, so that we can get the rest of the day to venture out after checking in the hotel and freshen up. Go easy on your first day, try to figure out the places around your hotel, find some good restaurants to eat, explore local markets and transportation services, or you can pick up a rental bike/car to roam around.

We stayed in The J Hotel , located in the city center, near Aberdeen bazaar from where all the attractions are in proximity.

Later in the afternoon slot, visited Cellular Jail (1.2 km– 3 min drive from J hotel), also known as ‘Kalapani’, a former colonial prison during the British rule, now a memorial turned museum, illustrates inhuman and unimaginable tortures, struggles of freedom fighters for India’s independence.

You will get a chance to explore this historical national monument on your own at your own pace and dig into the brutal history.

In the evening, attend the Light and Sound show at the same place, where the heroic saga of the Indian freedom struggle is brought alive. It gives you goosebumps.

• Entry fees for the museum, light & sound show are separate, not much, and worth spending for.
• Autos and taxis are readily available as a commute with reasonable charges.

Day 2: Scuba diving at North Bay Island, visit Ross Island

To boost up the vacation, we chose to start our day 2 with Scuba diving. After finishing breakfast, we rushed to Andaman Water Sports Complex to hire a speed boat to North Bay Island, where you can enjoy all kinds of thrilling water sports.

We both are non-swimmers, and the fact is Saurabh has an underwater phobia, but we both did it with absolute ease and fun.

Scuba diving services are available on Havelock Island as well. If Scuba diving is not your cup of tea and find it more difficult, then you can try other water sports too like – sea walking (It is comparatively easy but equally exciting), snorkeling, glass-bottom boat riding, jet skiing, banana boat & speed boat rides.

Just choose your sport by how much thrill can you handle and of course bearing in mind the age factor.

Alternate plan- If you are not interested in any of the water sports, then instead of going to North Bay Island, enjoy your morning on Corbyn’s Cove beach till the afternoon.

After returning to the water sports complex take another boat or maybe the same boat from North Bay Island will take you directly to Ross Island (recently named as Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Dweep), where you can spend 2-3 hours.

Take a walk through Ross Island (Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Dweep) is another historical place, once occupied by the Japanese from 1942 to 1945, who was helping Mr. Subhash Chandra Bose to fight against the British empire.

You will find their imprints here, now a historical tourist attraction; consists of remains of Japanese bunkers & colonies naturally sheltered by roots and branches of the trees, creating photogenic spots!

This island has beautiful surroundings of palm and coconut trees and is home to various species of birds, Spotted Deer, Hens, and Peacocks.

They also conducted a Light and Sound Show in the evening, but we skipped the show and returned to Water Sports Complex & spent some time there, clicking pictures at the Tsunami Memorial and Rajiv Gandhi Statue.

• Please carry your lunch pack, and drinking water with you while exploring North Bay Island & Ross Island.
• Please carry changing clothes, if you are performing water sports. The clothes-changing facilities are available at North Bay Island.
• North Bay Island & Ross Island are closed on Wednesday.

Day 3: Journey to Havelock Island, visit Radha Nagar Beach

After spending an audacious day, it is now time to rejuvenate from head to toe, and there is no better place than Havelock Island for relaxation. It was recently named as Swaraj Dweep.

On Day 3, we woke up early, checked out from our hotel, and proceeded to Phoenix Bay Jetty (1.5 km- 4 min drive from J Hotel) to board the early morning (8.15 AM) Makruzz ferry (Privately owned, luxury, air-conditioned, high-speed catamaran) to the Havelock Islands. It was a 1.5-hour cruise ride to enjoy the seascapes.

You can opt for a government ferry that will take a little longer and is cheaper than the private catamaran, but the main drawback is that online bookings are not allowed & tickets can be bought only at the counter two days before the departure, which we found little risky if already booked.

Havelock Island is the most visited and popular, must-see destination, home to exotic-looking beaches, and outstanding coral reefs with fascinating marine life that excites snorkelers & divers. Do you know that a larger part of the island is a dense rainforest offering ample opportunity for bird watching & hiking?

On arrival to Havelock Island, you will fall in love at first sight with the mesmerizing beauty of the island, emerald-colored water with white sand & greenery on the backdrop, rustic, not so fancy looking yet so charming!

The pace of life is slow, the locals are friendly and the facilities are moderately basic. You will observe local businesses, tour offices, ticket counters for Elephant Beach, ferry service offices, restaurants, and bike rentals right there at the Havelock ferry terminal, so you don’t need to worry about searching for anything.

You can pick up a rental bike or take an auto/tuk-tuk to your hotel. Bike rentals can also be arranged by your respective hotel/resort on your demand.

After settling in our cozy, eco-friendly Nicobari-style villa at Silver Spring Resort located at Shyam Nagar No. 4, on a hilltop overlooking lush green trees, from where Radha Nagar Beach (Asia’s best & world’s most beautiful beach) is just 7 Km away, so if you don’t mind staying away from beach crowd & expensive hotels, this indeed good deal within the budget!

We were so excited to see Radha Nagar Beach and without having lunch we made our first visit to this awesome place. Outside the beach, you’ll find many local shops selling fresh local fruits, and coconut water, renting snorkels and fins, some of them selling bamboo hats, sarongs, fish-bone arts, ornaments made from pearls and seashells, real conch shells, coconut handicrafts, etc. We bought one big conch seashell as a souvenir of the Andaman trip & attractive pearl shell earrings and bracelets for gifting purposes.

We were already starving, and our hunger intensified by the aroma coming out from a local, not-so-fancy-looking eatery, where we fulfilled our appetite by having authentic super delicious fish fry varieties.

Here’s a quick tip, eat like a local, if you want to taste authentic dishes, never go to big fancy restaurants on the islands, you’ll end up spending extra for a regular taste.

Radha Nagar Beach is the main attraction in Havelock Island and became popular worldwide in 2004, voted as one of Asia’s Best Beaches by Time Magazine, it’s a pride of Andaman and Nicobar Islands and surely a must-see place.

A long stretch of white sandy beach, ocean green water, surrounded by thick mangrove forest, and cleanliness make it even more beautiful and appealing for swimming. However, you might be disappointed because it is a very crowded place.

This beach has changing rooms, luggage counters, lockers, and toilets for visitor’s use. Spending an evening here and watching a gorgeous sunset will certainly be one of your biggest highlights from the trip.

Normally after sunset, everybody returns to their respective places/hotels before it’s dark. Be careful not to miss the last jeep/auto/tuk-tuk back if you’re not staying nearby. We concluded the day with a dinner in our hotel’s in-house restaurant, which was average in taste.

Note that –

• While purchasing any Conch shell, please make sure its corners/edges are not sharp, to be cut down before purchase, or else the airport authority will not permit entry on the plane, also do not forget to take receipt of purchase from the shopkeeper and keep it handy during luggage screening in the airport.
• Please carry extra clothes if you are interested in swimming in Radha Nagar Beach, changing rooms & lockers are available for rent.
• After the evening, do not stay on any beaches and sometimes not permitted by the beach authorities unless any activities are made by the respective resorts near the beach in Havelock Island.
• Makruzz ferry does not operate from April to September & all guests traveling to Havelock are required to carry ID proofs in order to issue their ticket back from Havelock – Port Blair.

Day 4: Excursion to Elephant Beach, Snorkeling, Evening at Govind Nagar

On the second day in Havelock Island, we decided to go to Elephant Beach as the weather was pleasant, clear skies, absolutely perfect for snorkeling.

The complimentary breakfast from the hotel was so delicious with many varieties, potato curry with puri (Indian fried thin sliced round bread), toasted bread with jam and butter served with hot tea and our favorite hot South-Indian delicacies were so yummy and fulfilling for the day.

We got ready and left the hotel by 8 AM, came to the same spot at the Havelock ferry terminal to board a speed boat. The 25-minute boat ride to the Elephant Beach was a pleasure to your eyes full of panoramic views and the first sight of Elephant Beach was outstanding.

It is an isolated beach that offers snorkelers calm, pristine shallow water with light blue color, amazing colorful coral reefs probably the best on the Island, starts remarkably close to the shore at a depth of about one meter with plenty of marine life, is simply the perfect spot for beginner snorkelers.

If you are an experienced snorkeler, then just slip on your gear and start snorkeling in shallow water spots. Non-swimmers like us can experience it through dive shops with the help of instructors; many resorts arrange snorkeling and diving trips here.

The price ranges around 1000-1500 INR per person (provided with snorkeling gear), which we think is worth the experience and is less risky than scuba diving. Any age group of people can perform snorkeling with ease, it is just that you are floating on the surface and the instructor is right there with you.

It is reachable on foot from Radha Nagar Beach # 7. This place is great to spend the day lying on the beach, sunbathing, and relaxing, offers incredible picture-perfect scenes with fallen trees and white sand, giving the opportunities for photographers to try some interesting shots using fallen tree branches as a property.

Later in past afternoon we came back and explored the junction Govind Nagar (Beach #3), the main ‘town’ is small and has a handful of shops and local dhabas (Eateries), we had dinner in one of the dhabas, tried some exciting varieties of seafood and the day concluded.

• Excursion to Elephant Beach is dependent on weather conditions, so keep your alternate plan ready, if this has been canceled.
• You can carry an extra pair of clothes for snorkeling, there are changing rooms available.
• It is advisable to pack your food and water if you are planning to stay for a longer time at Elephant Beach. There are limited or I would say no options to drink and eat.

Day 5: Leisure day, beach hopping & roaming around the Havelock Island

This day is devoted to your likings and preferences, ask yourself what your heart wants to do, and just go with the flow, and enjoy your freedom, the entire island is waiting outside for you.

We wanted to explore the island with no plan, no schedule, and no restrictions, just wanted to wander around the island on the bike.

So, it was a peaceful morning for us, we started slow, enjoyed our morning breakfast sitting on our private balcony, breathing in the fresh air, hearing gusts and leaves listening to chirping birds, roaming around our villa, exploring our resort, clicking some pictures and videos.

Later, we rented a motorbike (Honda Activa) for INR 400/day from our hotel and hit the road. It was a beautiful sunny day, roads were mostly empty and protected by big trees on both sides, playing hide and seek with the sun, you’ll observe old-fashioned wooden houses, Nicobari huts surrounded by arrays of betel nut trees, palm trees, coconut trees, and other tropical rain forest sited all around.

You will just fall in love with the slow & relaxed vibes of the town, which we often miss in our urban city lives.

Kala Pathar Beach gets its name from Kala Pathar village and also due to the Black Rocks that enhance the coastline.

We loved spending relaxing time here, it has some virgin spots, and you will feel like you are on some private unspoiled beach where you can lie down, chill on hammocks, go swimming, collect shells, and corals & decorate your sandcastle.

It’s a perfect place for newly married couples who seek privacy and a lone blissful WE time.

If you haven’t performed scuba diving in Port Blair, then you have a chance to experience it here in Havelock Island & instead of beach hopping, you may go for Scuba from one of the certified dive centers (Barefoot, Dive India, etc.)

Those who love adventures like trekking in the rainforest jungle or some of you may be interested in fishing trips, which can be organized by Wild Orchid Resort , Barefoot , Emerald Gecko Resort , etc. Just enjoy your day as per your choices at your own pace!

For lunch and dinner, you can try several options from budgeted restaurants in the Govind Nagar area to mid-range restaurants like Emerald Gecko to expensive and better-quality restaurants like Red Snapper at Wild Orchid Resort, where they served cocktails & alcohol, seafood platters from fresh fish selections, right from Tuna Steak, Lobsters, Tiger Prawns all are freshly available. The food and the ambiance are amazing, it’s a little expensive though. That’s how you can spend your Day 5 in Havelock Island.

Day 6: Return to Port Blair, explore the city, visit museums, shopping in Aberdeen Bazar

Renowned as the heaven for adventurers, trekkers, nature lovers, foodies, and honeymooners, Havelock Island manages to maintain its charm that is 100 percent tourist-friendly. It’s now the time to say bye to Havelock Island with a promise to come back again…

We checked out from Silver Spring Resort and came back to Port Blair by Makruzz in the morning. After checking in to the same J Hotel in Port Blair, we decided to visit museums in Port Blair – Zonal Anthropological Museum and Naval Marine Museum (Samudrika) comprises the city tour.

It’s a wise decision to spend afternoon time exploring museums to stay indoors and it will keep you busy in exploration.

Zonal Anthropological Museum is just a 2 min drive from our hotel, and from there Samudrika Naval Marine Museum is a 5 min drive away.

You will get the opportunity to learn and understand the tribal life in Andaman and Nicobar Islands through the museums. Spend an hour or less depending upon your interests. Also, visit adjoining souvenir shop to buy the collectibles.

The other one, the Naval Marine Museum often called Samudrika, run by the Indian Navy, has a collection of unique varieties of corals, seashells, and some species of fishes to educate various aspects of marine life underwater. Both are recommended for curious-minded people.

Later in the evening, we were roaming in and around Aberdeen Bazar for shopping. Aberdeen Bazaar is a famous marketplace in the heart of Port Blair city, where you will find not only groceries, vegetables, fruits, spices, ornaments, clothes, and souvenirs but also it is a hub of various shops like ATM, telephone, internet cafe, restaurants, lodging, travel booking companies, etc.

Do not forget to take souvenirs back home. If you find souvenirs expensive in some shops, I recommend ‘Andaman and Nicobar Emporium – Sagarika’, a government-aided store where you will find them at reasonable rates. That’s how we spent our Day 6 exploring the city, shopping, and of course, eating local delicacies.

Day 7: Mount Harriet National Park, Chatham Island & Chidiya Tapu

It’s Day 7 in the Andaman Islands, and there are still some interesting attractions to visit. After heavy breakfast, we came to the Chatham ferry jetty located on Chatham Island by car (You can take a taxi/auto) to board a huge ferry boat. You’ll really enjoy this ferry boat ride of 10-15 min, which takes you to Bambooflat ferry jetty, capable of carrying motorbikes, and cars along with people is a great way of local transportation here.

You need to hire a jeep from Bambooflat jetty to Mt. Harriet National Park, a 5.1 km road that passes through the lush tropical forest. During the journey, your driver will show you the place from where the picture of the old Indian 20 Rs. currency note was taken.

It’s the third highest peak in the A & N archipelago, offering great views of coastal terrain from their watchtowers, you will get the view of North Bay & Ross Islands from an Emerald viewpoint.

It is a home for a variety of butterflies and one of the famous trekking spots. The trail begins from Mount Harriet and ends at Madhuban offering sights of exotic plants, wild birds & animals, and butterflies along the way.

There is a hiking opportunity at Chidiya Tapu as well, famous for bird watching. For those who are interested, I would recommend taking a guided trekking tour or traveling in groups for the safer side. We did not go trekking, because it requires more relax-time, and we have other plans for the day.

After returning to Chatham Island by the same ferry, we went to see Chatham Saw Mill, one of the oldest & largest in Asia, was set up in 1883 and is still running to fulfil the requirements of saw and timber for construction on the island.

It will be an informative tour of an hour or less, where you learn about the types of woods available on the island, and its processing, cutting & shaping techniques as per the requirements. The museum displays some wooden artifacts which demonstrate the skill of local people.

One can visit the other attractions of Chatham Island, Japanese War Bunker of Second World War & Forest Museum located near the Chatham Saw Mill if you have enough time.

We ended our Andaman journey with Chidiya Tapu, which is 30 km from Chatham Island, and to reach here you need to cross the entire Port Blair City.

This beach is undeniably beautiful and famous for its spectacular sunsets. As I said earlier it is famous for birding and that’s why they call it ‘Chidiya Tapu- The translation in English is Birds Island’.

It is far from Port Blair city and neglected by many tourists, a less commercial place with no water sports, no restaurants & other amenities, which anyway is good for the environment, as a result, you’ll find this beach is so clean and serene.

People come here in the evening to see the sun setting down beyond the hills of Neighboring Rutland Island, while the reflection of bright yellow lights on clean and calm water offers the perfect background for sunset photography.

We love the vibes of the beach, it is different than the other beaches, where the water is crystal clear and calm with no waves. The sudden change of landscape from a golden sandy beach to huge lush green trees on the shorelines certainly soothes your mind and soul and makes a perfect end to the beautiful island story.

Day 8: Time to say - ‘Bye and See You Again’

We checked out from J Hotel after breakfast. We were happy to manage a window seat while going back and enjoyed the extreme beauty of the Andaman Islands from the sky, bringing back unforgettable memories of the Island that we are going to cherish for a lifetime.

How to plan the Ultimate Trip to the Andamans?

Step 1: pin down on what you want your trip to look like.

What your trip looks like often boils down to the intent behind your trip and the type of traveller you are. Your intent could be adventure, a honeymoon, an anniversary with your partner, some quality family time or plain ole alone time. A lot of your vacation decisions rest on this intent. 

Here are some bite-sized takeaways for different types of travellers:

For the romantics:

More Havelock + Neil, less Port Blair should be your go-to mantra. If you’re looking at about a week, the ratio can be 6:1. Nothing says romantic like a beach-side resort with swaying coconut trees and an open-aired bar. Look for an upper-category room to ramp up the oomph factor.

For the adventurers:

Do not miss out on the breath-taking scuba-diving experiences you can have in the Andamans. The best places to dive are: Havelock, Neil & Chidiya Tapu, Port Blair. If you’re an experienced diver, looking to organise a dive trip to more remote locations like Barren Island, seasoned dive shops like Lacadives will be happy to help you with it. You’ll have to call at-least 1-2 months in advance and book it, since it’ll require special permits that could take time to come through. Look up & book other activities before you go, these could include: kayaking, sea karting, jet skiing, para sailing, sea walking, snorkelling & trekking.

For the family traveller:

Mix it up with some culture and adventure. You can split your time equally between Port Blair, Havelock and Neil. Do look for properties with pools, because no family vacation is complete without pool games. If you’re a large family, you can approach hotels for a group rate and even book a private party space in advance! 

For the solo traveller:

The nicest part about going solo is the freedom to set your own pace and to explore off-beat places. So, if you’re keen on something like this, look up lesser-known islands like: Long Island, Ross & Smith, Little Andaman and Rutland. You’ll find yourself transported backwards in time to idyllic little towns and villages that will allow you a sort of mental re-awakening. But hey, if it’s Havelock + Neil you’re craving, then by all means, go for it! They are sure to give you equally enriching experiences. 

Step 2: Pin down on a Budget Range 

Your budget range will probably determine the resort or hotel that you choose to stay at. If you’re looking at a luxury or a mid-range group of hotels, it could mean that you’re not looking to cut corners in most places and can comfortably accommodate a range of island activities, restaurant hopping and bar hopping in your budget. So, this one’s mostly for people looking to travel on a tighter budget. 

There are some things we recommend you skimp on and some things that you absolutely don’t, if you’re not looking to splurge and go all-out. Here it goes:

• Regardless of what your budget is, feel free to cut down in Port Blair but go in for the best resort that your budget can offer in Havelock.
• If you’re looking to add a bit of adventure, allocate a minimum budget of 10k per person for a vacation of 4-5 days. You may not partake every day, but you’ll want to do something every 2 days to break the monotony of the beach and the pool. 
• Allocate a minimum budget of 7k per person for restaurant hopping for a vacation of 4-5 days. You may not want to eat at the resort or hotel of your stay every single day. So, put aside a small budget for exploring different eateries. This is an absolute must. 

Step 3: Pin down on the perfect number of days 

While the “perfect number” may sound far-fetched, there is a number at which just about any traveller will be happy. That sweet number, lovelies, is 7 days aka. a week. Anything less than that and you’re sure to be feeling like you’re hurrying along. You’re dreading the end of your vacation even before it has started. We’ve done it and it’s the worst! More than a week is, of course, ideal but some may say that we’re being over-optimistic. So, we’ll leave it at 7 days minimum. That’s the sweet spot, if you will. 

Step 4: Know the different seasons and the best time of travel for you

Do you want to be here when it’s pouring cats, dogs and whales? Maybe. Maybe you’re the rare breed of traveller that relies only on your hearty spirit to make the best of your holiday. However, that’s not been our experience with most holiday-makers. Weather can be a deal-breaker for most people. Pick your dates smartly and in all probability, you may end up having a sunny time.

So, for the weather-cautious, the break-down of tourist seasons in the Andamans looks more or less like this:

Step 1: Flights First

Booking of flights is a great starting point for travellers to the Andamans. Here are a couple of tips to keep in mind:

• Book flights 1-2 months in advance: Flights to Port Blair during the High + Peak seasons can be exorbitant, if they’re not booked in advance. So, try and book at-least 1-2 months in advance, if not more. This is especially for folks looking to travel in December and January. Last-minute ticket costs in these two months can go to as high as Rs. 30,000 one-way and getting a ticket can become an annoying, expensive affair. 
• Book flights smartly, it can save you money: If you’re looking to spend time only in Havelock & Neil, book the earliest flight into Port Blair, so you can get the last ferry to the islands that departs from Port Blair at 2 pm. Similarly, from Havelock or Neil, book the earliest ferry into Port Blair, so that you can leave on the last flight back. This will mean that you can give Port Blair a complete miss, if you want to, without spending the night here. 

Step 2: Ferries before Hotels

Book your inter-island ferry tickets (from Port Blair to Havelock or Neil islands) before you book your hotels, even if you’re someone that loves to take it as it comes. There are a limited number of ferries on the islands and thereby, there are a limited number of tickets. We’d recommend booking it at-least a month in advance. At worst, you can do 3 weeks in advance. Through the years, we’ve seen some travellers come to the islands without ferry tickets and struggling with it after they’ve arrived. It can make for a bitter experience if you only have a few days in hand and are not pleased to be stuck in Port Blair. 

Step 3: Hotel Bookings 

Booking hotels and resorts is a vast field to cover, but we’ll give you the most important things to keep in mind while booking them. 

• More Havelock + Neil, Less Port Blair: If we had a rupee for every time we’ve said this, we’d have a piggy bank full of fat coins. But this is essential and cannot be said enough. If you’re here for a tropical beach vacation, then Havelock & Neil islands are where you want to be spending the most time. Although Port Blair district does have its own set of coveted beach locations, we’re still a little partial to the island twins: Havelock & Neil. 
• Location. Location. Location: Decide on whether you want a moderately crowded space or a near-isolated resort on a remote part of the island. Most people on short trips prefer to stay close to the buzz. All the islands are comfortable quiet after dark, so you are not likely to be faced with loud music or drunk vacationers, in any case. But if you’re after a special type of isolation, and are looking to step off the beaten path, you only need ask. 
• Beach-side hotels > Hotels not on the beach: We don’t think this needs an explanation. But we’re still going to do it: white sand, a heady sea breeze and a beach lined with coconut trees. Okay, you get the drift. 
• Pool is cool: Disgustingly rhymed words aside, even if you’re on a beach, luxuriating in a pool is a whole different vibe. And if it’s a pool with a pool-side bar, extra brownie points for that! Because nothing better than sitting on a flamingo, sipping chilled beer and soaking up the sun. 

Step 4: Booking your Activities 

Booking your activities well in advance may be to your advantage if you have very few days of vacation time and don’t have the luxury of flexibility. 

• Book your Scuba session in advance: If you book a Scuba-Diving session (you should definitely), do it well in advance. This is especially applicable during peak season between December and January when most dive shops get completely booked out.
• More adventure, less sight-seeing: Indulge in more adventure activities, like water sports & trekking, and less sight-seeing activities. Try to pick 2-3 sights to see, if at all and don’t let FOMO get the better of you. 

Do a maximum of 2 Activities/day: Don’t book yourself for more than 2 activities in a day. You probably don’t want to feel like you have a time-table to follow. Don’t try and cram in too much, without giving yourself any breathing space.

A lot of people wonder if their Indian sim cards will work on the Andamans and the answer is: yes, it will! We have three main service providers here: Airtel, Vodafone and BSNL. So, if you’re with any one of them, you don’t have to worry about getting a new sim card when you land or getting an international sim card before you depart. BSNL and Airtel are your best bet. If you’re not with any of them, you could get one before you arrive and it’ll work just fine. 

Cash or Card?

Although we do have ATMs everywhere in Port Blair and we have a couple in Havelock & Neil and most places do accept card payments, it’ll still be prudent to carry some amount in cash. You may need it for smaller eateries, roadside vendors, to pay for some activities and such. An all-card approach is definitely not advisable. At all times, keep at-least Rs. 5000 in hand which can be replenished at an ATM when it runs out.

I took a trip to Andaman Islands recently and can tell you without a doubt that you will end up spending almost every morning and evening on all days at different beaches. In my current blog, I will share my own Andaman one week itinerary with you. On my recent trip, I followed it and was able to explore the place well. I hope you benefit a great deal out of it.

Also, the number of beaches that can be visited on their trip. Well, let me tell you that one complete week is an ideal time to unwind yourself in the tranquil beaches of this tropical paradise.

Andaman One Week Itinerary

If you are wondering how to plan a trip to Andaman, I will try my best to guide you in preparing a good itinerary.

What can possibly be better than sharing my own Andaman one week itinerary with you!

The following Andaman itinerary for 7 days was followed by me and I will recommend the same to you.

This itinerary keeps in mind the balance between relaxation, adventure, sightseeing and fun. It is suitable for travelers across age groups.

Now that I have given you a rough idea about how your Andaman one week itinerary should look like, let me provide you with more details. This will help you get more clarity.

Day 1 of Andaman One Week Itinerary

Your seven day trip to Andaman Islands will begin at Port Blair.

Located in South Andaman, Port Blair is the capital of Andaman and Nicobar Islands. All major carriers fly to Veer Savarkar International Airport, situated just outside the city.

Landing in Port Blair will give you an adrenaline rush. After all, you will be looking at the emerald and turquoise waters of the isles. The majority of the flights arriving at Port Blair are post noon.

So you can check into your hotel, freshen up and go for some local sightseeing.

The first place you should be visiting is the Cellular Jail. It is an old colonial prison also known as Kala Pani.  In Hindi, the words Kala Pani mean ‘black water.’

This prison has witnessed gruesome tortures of the Indian freedom fighters sent to exile. Spending an hour in these cells will make you retrospect on a lot of things.

The view from the top of the Cellular Jail. During the colonial rule in India, prisoners from the Indian mainland were kept here. The treatment given to them was cruel and barbaric. Walking past the cells will take you down dark historic times.

Once you are done seeing the Cellular Jail, head for the’Sound and Light Show’ therein.

The Sound and Light Show at Cellular Jail reveals the tales of the injustice and inhuman punishments faced by prisoners. This one-hour musical is sure to touch your heart and tear you up.

Day 2 of Andaman One Week Itinerary

Wake up early and depart for your morning ferry to Havelock Island. This is the only way to travel to Havelock Island from Port Blair. The Phoenix Bay Jetty connects Port Blair and Havelock Island.

You can opt for a government ferry that takes slightly longer but is way cheaper than privately owned catamarans.

Havelock Island is home to some of the most impressive beaches in Andamans. One such beach is the Radhanagar Beach. It will stun you with a spectacular sunset view.

Radhanagar Beach has been consistently rated as one of the best beaches in Asia. This will certainly be one of your biggest highlights from the trip.

Havelock Islands is also home to some gorgeous coral reefs. In recent years, this place has become a hub for adventure activities such as scuba diving and snorkeling. 

Havelock Island recently got a new name. It is now known as Swaraj Dweep.

While at Havelock Island, make sure to witness the spectacular sunset view at Radhanagar Beach. It is rated as among the best beaches in Asia. Watching the sun go down in the turquoise waters of the Andaman sea is a truly beautiful sight.

Day 3 of Andaman One Week Itinerary 

Start your third day of Andaman one week itinerary with the most awaited of all adventure activities – Scuba diving.

Scuba diving at Andaman is one of the most sought after experiences by travelers. The diving establishments at Havelock are located at Govindnagar Beach No. 2.

The instructors are PADI certified and diving here is safe without having anything to worry about. PADI stands for Professional Association of Diving Instructors.

The entire process of getting trained and then going deeper into the blue waters to see the corals will take roughly about a couple of hours.

Scuba diving is a must while at Havelock, especially if it is your first dive.

Do not worry at all. The fact that you will pursue scuba diving for the first time is a thing that will make you proud later.

Scuba Diving at Havelock Island will prove to be one of your best experiences. I strongly insist that you don’t be afraid and pursue it against all odds. The instructors at the Andamans are highly experienced. It will leave you with a fantastic memory for life.

Once you are done with scuba diving, spend the rest of the evening at Kalapathar Beach. This is a rocky beach with black stones. It is a quiet beach which sees fewer tourists and does not have any commercial set-up like food joints or shopping outlets around.

It is the perfect place to spend some time by yourself just looking at the rise and fall of ocean waves when the sun goes down.

Day 4 of Andaman One Week Itinerary 

Head to the Elephant Beach in the morning for your next adventure. The conditions at the Elephant beach are favourable for snorkeling.

Clear blue still water and corals near the shore will make for one heck of snorkeling experience.

The beach is accessible either by a 30-minute boat ride from the Havelock Jetty, or a one hour trek through the swampy marshes. Either way, it is an interesting excursion and worth the effort.

If you’re not yet content with the number of beach visits, visit Govindnagar Beach No. 5.

Govind Nagar Beach No. 5 offers breath-taking views of the endless sea while you swim in the open waters.

One thing that you absolutely cannot miss is observing the natural phenomena of bio-luminescence at Havelock Island. In fact, if you want, head for a night kayaking trip. It is truly magical.

Bio-luminescence is basically a phenomenon of production and emission of light by phytoplankton. These microscopic algae give water a sparkling and glowing feel. 

The phenomena are best observed on a new moon night. But, you can observe it at other times of the lunar month as well.

At Havelock Island, you can pursue a night kayaking tour for observing bio-luminescence better. A female guide – Tanaz will help you through your trip. Not only will she motivate you but will inspire you with her vast knowledge about kayaking, planets, constellations and their effect on these organisms that produce light.

Your trip will begin at 3 in the morning and end at sunrise around 6 am. Trust me, you will never forget this magical experience.

One of the best takeaways from your week-long trip to Andamans should be witnessing the magical bio-luminescence at Havelock Island. If you like adventure, take a 3-hour kayaking trip at night with this extraordinarily inspiring guide named Tanaz.

Day 5 of Andaman One Week Itinerary

Board the morning ferry from Havelock to Neil island. Neil is much smaller in size as compared to Havelock. However, it is well-connected to both Port Blair and Havelock by ferry.

The island is meant for relaxing and nothing else. It is a favourite among travelers wanting to beat the crowd. Spending a day at Neil Island to take a breather is the right way to spend some quality time.

Bharatpur, Laxmanpur and Sitapur are the three beaches on the island. Each one of them has its own charm.

Most of the resorts on the island are on the Bharatpur Beach with direct beach access and amazing snorkeling opportunities.

The highlight of the island is the Natural Coral Bridge at the Laxmanpur beach.

The beach also offers a great sunset view. Neil island was also recently renamed and is now known as Shaheed Dweep.

The beautiful Neil Island – connected to both Port Blair and Haveock by the Government ferry. This particular island is not known for any specific activities or sights. The best thing to do is relax, breathe, and do nothing. Trust me, you’ll absolutely ove it.

Day 6 of Andaman One Week Itinerary

On day six, you should be heading back to Port Blair. A ferry will bring you back from Neil Island to Port Blair.

You can check-in to your hotel and then get ready to visit one of the earliest British administrative settlements – the Ross Island near Port Blair.

Ross Island has been recently renamed to Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Island.

The island is tiny and located just off Port Blair. You can get to the island only by ferry from Port Blair. This will take less than 15 minutes in a ferry.

The Ross island now hosts only ruins but was a palace during the British rule.

They fondly called it the ‘Paris of the East’ owing to its natural charm and lavish vibe. The island has no vehicles and offers the best views with endless coconut and palm trees.

Day 7 of Andaman One Week Itinerary

Your flight back home will most likely depart from Port Blair in the afternoon. This means you still have a few hours left before you bid goodbye.

Start your last day of the Andaman one week itinerary with a morning walk at the Corbyn’s Cove offering the best sunrise view at Port Blair.

The beach at Corbyn’s Cove is a delight and you can afford to spend some time here soaking in the morning sun.

The last of all the attractions should be Chatham Saw Mill.  Make a quick visit there and to the Anthropological Museum before you head to the airport.

The Chatham Saw Mill is one of the oldest and the largest saw and timber mills in Asia. The Anthropological Museum is a tribute to the tribes of the Andaman Islands.

Your Andaman one week trip will end here. I am sure that it will make you richer by exquisite experiences at an exotic destination.

Reasonable Budget for your 7 Day Itinerary to Andaman Islands

You might have heard a lot of people say that Andaman Islands are expensive. That is not entirely true. 

People who end up spending money over their pre-decided budget are either luxury travelers or ill-informed visitors. If you are a luxury traveler, you can spend as much money as you desire.

But if you are an explorer like me and want to travel around Andaman Islands on a budget, do your research.

The budget largely depends on the choice of accommodation and the timing of your trip.

If you are looking forward to a luxurious stay, you will certainly end up spending way more than the above set budget. If you plan a trip during peak season, again you will spend much more. 

Therefore, travel to Andaman when the crowd is less. Hotels will cost you less and so will the flights.

Contrary to what a lot of people say, a budget trip to the Andaman Islands is easily possible. All you need to do is plan in advance, and make some worthy compromises. However, if you are a luxury traveler, you can spend as much money as you desire.

Mandatory Expenses for a 1 Week Trip to Andaman Islands

The expenses shared above are mandatory ones. You cannot skip them. However, you can surely indulge in resourceful planning.

Now let me share with you expenses that are optional. These mainly include adventure sports by the sea. Go for them if your heart desires. 

Most people go for scuba diving and snorkelling only.

Optional Expenses for a 1 Week Trip to Andaman Islands

Now that I’ve shared my complete Andaman one week itinerary with you along with the budget, let me elaborate on the travel basics of this locale.

Before planning your trip to the Andaman Islands, you should be aware of all of these aspects. It will help you connect more with the place.

Spend a lot of time at the beaches and make sure to carry all the essential stuff. Don’t allow people into making you believe that Andamans is expensive. Do your research and you’ll be surprised at how nominal the costs of visiting such a tropical locale are.

Travel Basics of Andaman and Nicobar Islands 

Here is some important travel information about Andaman and Nicobar Islands. You should be aware of it to fully understand the region.

Andaman and Nicobar Islands are a group of islands that lie in the Bay of Bengal region. The Andaman Islands and the Nicobar Islands are two distinct groups of islands.

They are separated by a 150 km wide channel. It is popularly known as the Ten Degree Channel. The Andaman Islands lie towards the to the north of the Ten Degree Channel. The Nicobar Islands lie towards to the south of the Ten Degree Channel.

These islands are together separated from Myanmar, Thailand and Indonesia by the Andaman sea. Geographically, the islands are closer to these countries than India. However, they are politically a part of India.

Number of Islands

The Andaman and Nicobar Islands are a group of almost 572 islands.

Out of this, only 37 islands have been inhabited.

Together, they form an archipelago (a group of islands).

Permits needed for visiting

If you are a traveler from within India, then no permit is required. However, if you are a traveler from outside India, you will need a Restricted Area Permit (RAP) to enter the Islands.

RAP is easily available on arrival at Port Blair. It will be valid for a maximum of 30 days. In case you need it extended, then either the SP or the FRO at Port Blair will have to issue you the permission for a maximum of 15 more days.

RAP can also be obtained from the Indian Missions overseas. Also from the Foreigners Registration Offices at New Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata and from the Immigration Authorities at the Airport of New Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and Kolkata.

Modes of travel

Your point of entry in Andaman Islands will be Port Blair. You can reach Port Blair by either air or sea.

The cheapest way to travel to Andaman is to take a flight. Major Indian airlines fly to Port Blair daily from the following Indian cities – Chennai, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Bengaluru and Delhi.

There are no direct flights to Port Blair from any other country. So you will have to be in India first and then travel to the Andaman Islands.

If you are interested in a cruising experience, you can opt to travel by ship from Chennai, Kolkata or Vishakhapatnam.

It takes roughly around 3 to 4 days. However, sailing is a seasonal activity.

Best Time to Visit

Andaman is a destination that you may visit the year-round.

Andaman and Nicobar Islands experience a warm tropical climate. It gets extremely humid at all times. Temperature averages at about 30 degrees Celsius around the year with erratic rainfall in most of the months.

Most travelers prefer to implement their Andaman one week itinerary between January and February. However, you can travel from April to May as well. It will cost you less than.

This is because during this time, the days are pleasant and the sun is not as harsh as it is during summer. Also, it does not rain as much in these months as it does in monsoon. So, there are lesser chances of high tidal waves and storms ruining your holiday.

Visiting Andamans when you deem it fit is important. Make sure you do your research and then travel to this heavenly abode. Do not travel when the heat is scorching and when the monsoons are at their peak. Travel when nature charms with all its bounty.

The Indian Rupee (INR) is the only valid and accepted currency on the Andaman Islands.

There are currency exchange outlets at the airport as well as in Port Blair.

ATMs are also operational in the city.

It is best that you carry sufficient cash while travelling to Havelock and Neil Islands.

Estimated budget of your trip

For a seven day trip to Andaman and Nicobar Islands, you should not spend more than 20 to 25K (INR).

This is about 363 USD or 324 EUR.

Try saving on accommodation and flights by booking early.

Remember that Andaman is not really a budget destination. But that does not mean you have to spend over the top.

I made sure to stick to 25K INR and my trip went just fine. All you need to do is a little research and advance planning.

Andaman and Nicobar Islands are safe as far as the crowd is concerned. You will face no mugging, eve teasing or harassment. 

However, in the recent past, the Islands have been prone to tsunamis and earthquakes.

Therefore, always check with the meteorological department before taking a trip here.

Eating options

Multi cuisine restaurants have opened up in all major Islands in the past.

Plenty of vegetarian restaurants with great South Indian and North Indian food are available.

Thus, there is absolutely no difficulty in finding a decent place to eat.

How to Find Cheap Accommodation in Andaman?

Unlike other exotic destinations where you’d find all kinds of luxury hotels, Andaman Islands are more grounded. The number of fancy accommodation options is limited, and their prices are on the higher side.

Now, this is good because you can choose from a range of budget hotels. It is important that you chose your accommodation wisely. Invest some time online in looking for budget options.

Then, book them as soon as you find them. Else, you will end up spending way more money than required.

It needs to be pointed out here that when I use the term ‘budget hotel,’ I do not imply stinky stays. I mean the most resourceful options that offer you a decent experience without burning your wallet.

Accommodation options

As I mentioned before, an ideal thing to do on your trip is to stay at a budget hotel. 

There is no dearth of budget stays. All you need to do is find them and book them weeks in advance.

Hotels in Port Blair will cost you less than those at Havelock and Neil Islands. In case you’re traveling as a group of friends, you can split the money. That way, it will cost you less.

However, if you are a solo traveler, make sure to dig deep and find yourself a nominal hotel.

If you end up spending more on your accommodation, you won’t be able to explore the beautiful locales. So I strongly suggest that you save on accommodation.

This is the view from the hotel I stayed at during my time in Port Blair. You too can look for budget hotels that provide you with the comfort and views that you desire. If you are traveling as a group of friends, you can go to fancy resorts as the cost can be split.

Whenever somebody visits a new region, it is important to stay aware of some handy tips.

I cannot begin to tell you how much these tips will help you. 

No amount of words can do justice to the beauty of Andamans. These islands treated me so well, and I hope I have the privilege of re-visiting them someday. If well-planned, you’ll see that you don’t need lots of money to explore such magical destinations.

Andaman and Nicobar Islands are beautiful travel destinations. If planned well in time, seven days can be fun filled in this tropical paradise.

While in this serene place, make sure to act responsibly. Do not be a frivolous traveler. Be a respectful one. Make sure to pay reverence to the locale and its people.

Predominantly, the Islands have been considered a top notch destination for a honeymoon or a family visit.I wanted to challenge this fact for myself and for other travelers who’ve refrained from venturing to Andamans on their own. I wanted to experience the beauty and the serenity of Andamans and I didn’t want to wait till I get married or grow old.

My experiences in Andaman are sure to help the travelers visiting Andaman for the first time. Although I have visited alone, the families can equally enjoy this place which has a lot to explore. Here goes my Andaman bagpacking experience with all the locations I covered.

Memorable Port Blair

The capital of Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Port Blair is nestled on the eastern side of the South Andaman Island. Port Blair often comes up to a pit stop for travelers going to see other scenic and less inhabited islands.

Time required: 1 day

Generally, Port Blair is a stopover or a changing point for most of the tourists coming to visit the Andaman Islands. However, a full day city tour should be sufficient to cover the important spots in the city.

Budget Accommodation: INR 700 to 2100/night

With plenty of options available in budget accommodation, despite the absence of hostels, a lot of locals have built multiple floors in their houses and rented them out as rooms. This can easily manage your Andaman trip cost especially if you are travelling solo.

Places to Eat in Port Blair:

Although there are a number of small restaurants where local seafood and South Indian cuisine is best served, still there are some of the renowned restaurants that should be on your list.

• Icy Spicy – This is one is for all those looking for vegetarian restaurants in Andaman. I had some real nice North Indian food. They serve Chinese and Italian cuisines as well. It is located in Junglighat and a meal for two will cost around 300INR.
• Annapurna – This one is another options for vegetarians in Andaman. They serve authentic South Indian and delicious North Indian food. This may cost a little higher for you but the taste absolutely worth it.
• Ananda – Anyone who loves seafood like me, will certainly like this place. They serve local cuisine which I loved. Crab curry is a must try.

Light and Sound Show at Cellular Jail (Kala Pani)

Cellular Jail , also known as Kala Paani, was a colonial prison now turned into a monument built in the British Rule of India to detain and exile dangerous and politically influential prisoners.

The beautifully choreographed light and sound show illustrate the struggles of the freedom fighters during the tough and testing times for our independence. Getting to hear about the stories of the sacrifices made by the martyrs for the country’s freedom was a truly humbling experience for me and should be a part of your Andaman itinerary too.

Amazing Diglipur

Diglipur, a small and quaint town located in the North Andaman Islands. One can take a helicopter, ferry or a bus ride to Diglipur. I chose to cover the 300kms journey via bus which takes around 8 hours.

The bus ride was the slowest, yet, most adventurous means of travel to the North Andaman from Port Blair. The bus cuts through the entire landscape of South, middle and North Andaman Islands to reach Diglipur.

Time Required : 3 days

A must-visit place for off-beat travelers and nature lovers, Diglipur offers a peaceful and harmonious alternative to the somewhat commercialized and tourist centric locations in Andamans.

Budget Accommodation : INR 1300 to 2500/night

Due to its location being relatively far from the major tourist locations, the options for a budget stay are limited as mostly families and foreign tourists venture out to the far north.

Places to Visit in Diglipur

The beauty of Diglipur was much anticipated after 8 hours bus ride experience which became a lifetime memory for me.  And here is what all was stored in for me:

Kalipur Beach

Kalipur Beach is one of the lesser known beaches of Andaman. It is characterized by brown mud beaches and a good amount of rocky formations in and around the beach.

Kalipur beach is also famous for being a turtle nesting site, as it attracts many tourists during the December – January period, when hundreds of turtles descend to the Kalipur beach to lay eggs.

Ross and Smith Islands

It is important that the Ross and Smith Islands are not to be confused with the Ross Island near Port Blair . After reaching Aerial Bay Jetty, I hired a private boat that took me for a day tour to the Ross and Smith Island. The boat takes approximately 30 minutes to reach the Ross and Smith Island.

The boat arrived onto the small sandbar that separated the Ross and Smith Islands. A special feature about these Islands is that there is a low tide during the day which makes a connecting path for both Islands and makes it appear like one Island and after sunset, the water comes up and separates the two Islets for the night.

The view on the beach is gorgeous and extremely scenic, it really left an impact on my mind. It is an ideal spot for photographers to capture some breathtaking views of the Andamans.

Saddle Peak

Another alternative for all nature and wilderness lovers is to hike the Saddle Peak. Located at 732m, it is the highest point in the Andaman Islands.

Once at the top, The Saddle Peak gives an incredible view of the lush green North Andaman coastline which stretches on till the eye can see.

Fascinating Havelock Island

I boarded a Makruzz Ferry (a privately owned Ferry company for tourists) from Port Blair headed towards Havelock Island. After a ninety-minute ferry ride, upon our arrival, we were greeted by bright and illuminating sunshine sparkling on the white sand beaches.

The island is by far the most popular tourist destination in the Andaman Islands owing to its scenic beaches and turquoise blue water.

The jewel in the crown of Andamans. Havelock Island comprises of the once voted ‘ Best Beach in Asia-2004’ & ‘World’s 6th Best Beach- 2004’- Radhanagar Beach. Having visited the beach once, it is very hard to resist another visit during the day or the next day.

Budget Accommodation : INR 700 to 2100 per night

A wide variety of accommodations is available on this island purely based on the demand and the annual footfall this island gets. Places ranging from shacks, homestays and guest houses are all available for a budget traveler going to Havelock Island.

Places to visit in Havelock

Havelock welcomes its guests with stunning beach beauty. I had heard a lot from my friends about Havelock and this was the day to see it all.

Elephanta Beach, Kalapathar Beach

I started by visiting the Kala Pathar Beach. It gets its name from the village that is situated close to the beach and also the rocks that are present on its white sandy beaches.

One can either go via land to cut across on the other side of Havelock or by a 20-minute boat ride from the Havelock Jetty. The beach is also famous for its lighthouse and snorkeling.

Radhanagar Beach

As soon as I reached Radhanagar Beach, I was awestruck by the grandeur and the enormity of the beach. Radhanagar stretches out both ways as far as the eye could see.

Once voted as the best beach in Asia, the soft and cushion nature of the sand on Radhanagar gave me a feel of walking on foam and occasionally even lying on it and taking in all its comfort and cool texture. Watching the sunset, with a slight wind blowing across the beach, albeit a partial one was absolutely blissful. I would personally recommend this to all the travelers going to Andaman.

Things to Do in Havelock

Now this is what I kept for myself with much excitement. Scuba Diving ofcourse is an out of the world experience.

Scuba Diving in Havelock

I had booked myself for a session of scuba diving with Scuba Wave by Barefoot. After my training, I went for a 60-minute dive with an instructor guiding me every step of my way due to my inability to swim. Spending those 60 minutes underwater was therapeutic.

After seeing a variety of fishes and an octopus, my scuba diving adventure came to end. I collected my pictures and video in my phone on my way out of the Scuba Diving Center.

Serene Neil Island

An approximate one-hour ferry ride from Havelock Island took me to Neil Island . Yet another Island which was spoilt with natural beauty pretty much untouched by the human civilization. We arrived on the Neil Island Jetty which was adjacent to the Bharatpur Beach.

Neil Island is often considered by many in the Andamans as the half-brother to Havelock Island. Mostly because of the amount of tourism that Havelock gets in comparison with the minuscule amount of visitors Neil Island attracts.

Time Required : 2 days

Many visitors to Andaman might argue with this fact but Neil Island certainly deserves 2 days or a day and a half minimum for its serenity, beauty and blossoming flora and fauna.

Budget Accommodation : INR 500 to 1500 per night

With limited tourism, this Island offers a nice alternative for tourists who found Havelock expensive, overcrowded or commercialized.

Places to See in Neil Island

This was kept as the last destination for my solo trip to Andaman so that I can admire the beauty with serenity. This indeed was the most peaceful experience of all.

Bharatpur Beach

Located just 500m away from the Neil Island Jetty, Bharatpur Beach is the main attraction at Neil Island. With a variety of activities like glass boat tour, snorkeling, scuba diving and jet skiing, the area offers plenty of things to do coupled with its scenic backdrop of the beach.

Sunset at Laxmanpur Beach

Another hidden gem in Andaman that I got to witness by luck, was the Sunset at Laxmanpur Beach at Neil Island. Credit goes again to the amazing people of Andaman who recommend the best tourist spots regardless of their popularity and appeal.

The colors that the sunset left on the canvas were simply magical. A dash of orange with a burst of pink across the skies towards the west, as the sun was setting provided a memorable evening for the tourists present on the Laxmanpur Beach.

Highlights of Andaman

• Seeing the bright and clean white sand beaches with aqua blue waters was a treat to sore eyes.
• People were very welcoming and helpful. It’s okay to trust strangers, people are very honest.

Tips for travelers

• Take at least 10 days to visit Andaman as going from one place to another usually takes a lot of sunlight hours.
• Planning well in advance will help in making your trip to Andaman cost better.
• Plan your inter-island ferry travel carefully. You need to buy a return ticket before going to any island.
• A short half-day visit to the Ross and Smith Island is a must.
• Take adequate medicines for people with sea-sickness as most of the traveling will be done via ferries only.
• Weather conditions can change very quickly. It is recommended to keep raincoats/jackets with you in a small backpack at all times.
