1 Day in NYC: Must-do’s for First-timers + Interactive Map

' src=

Only have one day in New York ? Maximize your visit with my itinerary created especially for NYC first-time visitors . I have visited New York City several times. During my last two trips, I was accompanied by people visiting for the first time.

I recommend spending at least four days in NYC . However, even one day can give you a taste of this top travel destination.

Key Things to Know: Top things to do in NYC for a day

  • Essential Stops: Don’t miss the Statue of Liberty, the 9/11 Memorial, or Central Park for a mix of history and iconic landmarks.
  • Transportation Tip: Maximize your time by using the subway for faster travel between Manhattan’s attractions.
  • Customization: This itinerary is completely customizable to your particular interests and the exact amount of time you have in New York City.

One day in New York itinerary

9/11 memorial (and museum).

9/11 Memorial | Closest subway stops: WTC–Cortland St (1) and Cortland Street (R, W)

Start your day by spending your morning in Lower Manhattan.

In my opinion, your one-day in NYC itinerary should absolutely include the 9/11 Memorial. It’s one of my favorite free things to do in New York City .

The terrorist attack on Sept. 11, 2001, which destroyed the Twin Towers, forever changed the city and the United States. In fact, it’s one of the most moving and beautiful memorials that I have ever had the privilege of seeing.

The 9/11 Memorial typically is open to the public all day every day.

Optional: The 9/11 Memorial Museum is at the same location. Though I haven’t had the privilege of seeing it, I’ve heard great things. There is a charge for admission to the museum.

9/11 Memorial pool in New York City showing names engraved in bronze with buildings and trees in the background.

Statue of Liberty

Ferry from Manhattan departs from Battery Park | Subway stops: South Ferry Station (1), Whitehall Street (R), Bowling Green (4, 5)

Your one-day New York City itinerary must include the Statue of Liberty, my absolute favorite place in the city

Buy your tickets ahead of time onlin e, especially if you want to climb up to the crown. When available, those tickets can sell out weeks or even months in advance.

Even if you don’t want to go up onto the pedestal or the crown of the Statue of Liberty, you can purchase a ticket to enjoy the cruise over to Liberty Island (with great views of both Lady Liberty and Lower Manhattan). You can visit the new museum and walk around the monument’s exterior.

If you only have a day in New York I recommend skipping a visit to Ellis Island even though it’s included in your ticket.

More things to do on a day trip to New York City

  • Explore NYC with a sightseeing helicopter tour over Manhattan .
  • Pay a visit to the top of One World Observatory with this skip-the-line ticket .
  • If you’re staying the night in New York, consider this sunset cruise in New York Harbor.

PRO TIP: If you have flexible travel dates you need to check out Going (formerly Scott’s Cheap Flights). You get amazing flight deals sent straight to your inbox with instructions on how to book directly with the airlines. Check out Going here. Going is my favorite way to find great travel deals.

Lunch options: where to eat

By the time you finish your visit to the Statue of Liberty, you’ll likely be ready for a bite to eat. The Crown Café offers a wide variety of burgers, salads, and sandwiches. Their menu includes vegetarian options as well as several items that can be made gluten-free upon request.

Battery Park (where you’ll disembark from your cruise to Liberty Island) is a great picnic spot. You can grab a cheap lunch from a food truck or assemble a picnic from a nearby market.

If a restaurant is more what you’re looking for, wander into the Financial District where you’ll find a variety of popular eateries for all budgets.

Empire State Building

20 West 34 Street | Subway stop: 34 St–Herald Square (B, D, F, M, N, Q, R, W), 33 St (M)

Many believe that visiting the Empire State Building is a must on their trip to New York City.

I will admit right now that in all my NYC trips, I’ve only ever admired this iconic structure from the ground.  I do not like heights, nor do I generally pay money to stand atop them. But you who are not afraid of heights can go as high as the 102nd floor. The main observation deck is on the 86th floor.

Time-saving tip: Upgrade your Empire State Building ticket to get skip-the-line access.

As an alternative, save the Empire State Building for after dinner, or even enjoy dinner at the State Grill and Bar.

New York City skyline with the Empire State Building.

Times Square

Subway stop: Times Square–42 Street (N, Q, R, S, W, 1, 2, 3, 7)

You’ve seen it in movies and TV shows. Of all the places to visit in New York City, it’s hard to think of anything else that’s more New York than Times Square. Soak it in, take a few photos, and wander through so you can say you’ve been there (it’s great at night also). Maybe even buy a cheap souvenir T-shirt or stop in at M&M’s World.

Times Square is just a 15-minute walk from the Empire State Building.

tall building in New York City with a sculpture in front

Rockefeller Center

Between 49th and 51st Streets between Fifth and Sixth Avenues | Subway stop: 47-50 Streets Rockefeller Center (B, D, F, M), 49 Street (N, R, W)

A 10-minute walk from Times Square will take you to Rockefeller Center. It’s a New York City landmark that includes 30 Rockefeller Plaza (NBC Studios), Radio City Music Hall, and more.

In addition to some great shopping and dining, you can take a guided tour of Rockefeller Center, go to the Top of the Rock Observation Deck , skate at the Rink, and more.

If you’re feeling snackish, I recommend stopping at Magnolia Bakery for something yummy.

Grab your Top of the Rock ticket here.

Central Park

From North 110th Street to Central Park South (59th Street), and from Central Park West (8th Avenue) to 5th Ave | Subway stops: There are several subway stops around the perimeter of the park including 5th Ave/59 Street (N, R, W), 59 Street/Columbus Circle (A, B, C, D, 1), Central Park North (2, 3), and 6 stops on the west side of the park.

Central Park is so quintessentially New York that you absolutely need to make time in your itinerary to see it even if only spending one day in New York.

Now, keep in mind that this park is huge. I mean it. Central Park covers 1.3 square miles (840 acres) of Manhattan. You could easily spend an entire day just exploring this place.

To start I’d suggest looking at a map of the park and choosing a few things there you want to see. This might be the Central Park Zoo, the Alice in Wonderland Statue, Belvedere Castle, or the Conservatory Water (where you can rent a model boat to sail on the pond).

The southeast corner of Central Park is just a 15-minute walk from Rockefeller Center. If you want to walk all the way to the Conservatory Water and the Alice in Wonderland Statue, expect a walk of closer to 30 minutes.

Time-saving Tip: Instead of walking to Central Park from Rockefeller Center, jump in a NYC cab.

Ways to modify this itinerary

With only one day in NYC, there are an incredible number of ways you could spend your time. Here are a few ways you could modify this one-day itinerary to fit your particular interests. It’s important that you get to see the things you want.

  • Take the subway to Brooklyn then walk across the Brooklyn Bridge, enjoying your view of the Manhattan skyline.
  • Enjoy a tour of either or both of two of the premier art museums in the world, The Metropolitan Museum of Art and/or the Museum of Modern Art.
  • Explore Greenwich Village, Soho, and other iconic neighborhoods.
  • End your day with a Broadway show.

View of Washington Square arch from below.

Short half-day itinerary for NYC

Even if you don’t have a full day or 24 hours to spend in New York City, you can still see a few of the major highlights. Here are a few options:

  • Focus on one area such as Lower Manhattan, grabbing a view of Brooklyn Bridge, followed by the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, and the 9/11 Memorial & Museum.
  • Explore the Empire State Building, Times Square, and Rockefeller Center, and then stroll up to Central Park for some more exploring.
  • Get the best of New York’s top art museums at The Met, the Museum of Modern Art, and the Guggenheim.

New York 1-day tours

Want to see the best of New York in a day, but rather leave the planning to someone else? Leave the planning to an expert tour guide.

  • Pack the very best of NYC into one day with this highly rate expert guided tour . See New York’s major landmarks in only 6 hours.
  • Go beyond Manhattan’s major tourist sites with this tour of Brooklyn, the Bronx, Queens, Harlem, and Coney Island .

Where to stay in New York City

If you’re thinking about spending more than a day in New York, you might be overwhelmed by the many hotel options.

Here are my recommendations for where to stay in New York City:

  • Hyatt Place Midtown South (52 West 36th Street): We loved staying at this hotel. It’s just two blocks from the Empire State Building and just around the corner from the 34th Street – Herald Square subway stop. Book Now
  • For a more boutique-style accommodation try Archer Hotel New York (45 West 38th Street). Book Now

How to get around New York City

I say this so often, but I will continue to say it over and over: use your feet and the subway.

I’m serious about the subway. You’ll get where you want to go cheaper than Uber or taxis and of course much faster than walking especially when traveling from one area of Manhattan to another.  You can find subway maps on the MTA website .

Taxis are a fine option for getting around New York City especially if you are in a time crunch or are going someplace that just doesn’t have an easy subway route or a nearby stop.

Final thoughts on one day in New York

There are so many amazing things to do in NYC in a day of course that you can’t possibly see as much as you would like, BUT you can see the best of the best if you have 24 hours in the Big Apple.

From historical monuments to stunning views from the best observatories in the world, you almost can’t go wrong with how you spend your day here.

What do you think everyone should put on their 1-day NYC itinerary?

Can’t wait great job

Great article, Darcy! You have prepared an amazing one-day itinerary for people vising NYC along with some great tips to commute within the city. Subways are indeed the best way to get around the whole city. However, if the time permits, why not go sailing as well? After seeing the city on foot all day, one can relax on a sailboat and enjoy the skyline. Several companies offer rental for 2-3 hours including sunset cruises overlooking Manhattan. Book beforehand to get the best deals.

When to Spend 1 Day in Amsterdam (Weather and Crowds)

Amsterdam’s weather can be quite unpredictable, but generally, the best time to visit in terms of weather is during spring (April to May) and early autumn (September to October).

During these months, you can expect milder temperatures and less rainfall.

Summer (June to August) can be pleasant but also more crowded, as it’s the peak tourist season.

Winter months (December to February) are cold and can be quite wet.

Keep in mind that Amsterdam can be busy year-round due to its popularity as a tourist destination, but autumn and winter (excluding the Christmas period) are less crowded.

How to Get to Amsterdam

Amsterdam is well-connected by air, train, and bus.

Amsterdam is well-connected to various European cities by train, making it a convenient mode of transportation.

The primary train station in Amsterdam is Amsterdam Central Station (Amsterdam Centraal). Here’s how you can get to Amsterdam by train:

  • From Other European Cities: You can take high-speed trains like Thalys or Eurostar that connect Amsterdam with cities like Paris, Brussels, and Cologne. The train journey is a comfortable way to travel and you can enjoy scenic views along the way.
  • From Other Dutch Cities: The Dutch railway network is extensive and efficient. Trains operated by Nederlandse Spoorwegen (NS) connect Amsterdam with many cities in the country.
  • From Schiphol Airport: If you arrive by air at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol (AMS), you can easily access the train station located directly underneath the airport’s main terminal. Trains run frequently between Schiphol Airport and Amsterdam Central Station, with a travel time of around 15-20 minutes.

If you’re arriving by air, you’ll land at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, which is one of Europe’s major international airports.

Here are some examples of direct flights to Schiphol Airport:

  • European Destinations: Schiphol Airport serves as a hub for flights within Europe. Many major European cities like London, Paris, Frankfurt, Barcelona, Athens and Rome have direct flights to Schiphol.
  • North American Destinations: There are direct flights from cities in North America to Schiphol Airport. Examples include New York City, Los Angeles, Toronto, and Atlanta.

From Schipol Airport, you can take a train directly to Amsterdam Central Station, which is located in the city centre.

Where to Stay in Amsterdam

Given that you’re spending only one day, it’s best to choose accommodation in or near the city centre to maximize your time exploring.

Popular areas include Dam Square, Jordaan, and the Canal Ring.

There are options ranging from luxury hotels to budget-friendly hostels.

Some handpicked hotels are Hotel Esherea , Radisson Blu Hotel and Park Plaza Victoria .

Check more accommodation options with Booking:

iAmsterdam City Card

The iAmsterdam City Card is a popular option for tourists. It offers free or discounted entry to many museums and attractions, as well as unlimited use of public transportation within the city.

Depending on your plans, it can be a cost-effective option. Just make sure to research the attractions you want to visit and calculate if the card’s price is worth it for your one-day visit.

Getting Around During One Day in Amsterdam

amsterdam canal cruise

Walking is a great way to explore Amsterdam’s compact city centre.

Many of the city’s major attractions, such as Dam Square, the Anne Frank House, and the Van Gogh Museum, are within walking distance of each other.

You can also stroll along the beautiful canals and discover hidden gems down narrow streets.

Walking is the best way to get to know the city and take in the details that you might miss while using other modes of transportation.

Biking is one of the most iconic ways to get around Amsterdam.

The city is incredibly bike-friendly, with bike lanes that can bring you everywhere in the country. The Dutch have a cycling culture deeply ingrained in their daily life.

Renting a bike for the day is a popular choice among tourists.

It gives you the flexibility to explore farther areas and experience the city like a local.

Just be cautious if you’re not used to biking in busy urban environments, and make sure to follow the rules of the road and also sign with your hand before turning right or left.

Public Transport

Amsterdam has an extensive and efficient public transportation network, including trams, buses, and the metro.

The GVB (Amsterdam’s public transportation company) offers various ticket options, including single tickets and day passes, which allow unlimited travel on all modes of public transport for a specific period.

You can book a travel ticket for public transportation that gives you access to bus, ferry, metro, train and tram.

Public transport is a good option if you want to cover more ground quickly, especially if you’re visiting attractions that are a bit farther from the city centre.

Driving

Driving in Amsterdam’s city centre can be challenging due to narrow streets, limited parking, and heavy traffic.

I would not recommend driving within the central area unless you’re familiar with the city’s layout and parking options.

If you’re staying outside the city centre and plan to explore nearby attractions, driving might be more convenient. However, keep in mind that parking fees can be high, and parking spaces might be limited.

  • Combining Modes: You can mix and match transportation modes depending on your preferences and the distances you need to cover. For example, you might walk or bike in the city centre and use public transport to reach attractions that are farther away.
  • Navigation Apps: Use navigation apps like Google Maps, 9292 and NS Travel Planner to help you navigate the city and find the best routes for walking, biking, or using public transport.
  • Safety: Be cautious while crossing roads, cycling, or walking along the canals. Stay aware of your surroundings, especially if you’re not familiar with the traffic patterns.

Tips for Exploring Amsterdam in a Day

Amsterdam's canals

  • Book Tickets in Advance . Amsterdam is one of the most popular cities in Europe, so make sure you plan ahead and book all your tickets in advance. It will save you time and frustration.
  • Plan on paying with the card. You’ll be surprised many establishments don’t accept cash at all, so always have at least 2 cards at hand in case the other one doesn’t work.
  • Renting a bike is a nice way to explore the parks and farther areas and experience the city like a local.
  • Plan to eat on the go as this will save you time and money.
  • Pack comfortable shoes and layered clothes.

What should you avoid in Amsterdam?

  • Taking pictures in the Red Light District
  • Renting a car
  • Walking on the bike path
  • Drinking in public
  • Smoking on the street
  • Leaving your belongings unattended
  • Mistaking a coffeeshop for a cafe

More Than One Day in Amsterdam?

If you have more than one day in Amsterdam, you definitely won’t run out of things to do in the city!

Here you can find my itinerary for a week in the city.

Alternatively, take a day trip from Amsterdam and visit more of the Netherlands.

24 Hours in Amsterdam FAQ

Amsterdam's streets

Is One Day Enough in Amsterdam?

While Amsterdam has a lot to offer, one day is quite limited to experience everything the city has to offer fully.

However, you can still get a taste of the city’s highlights, explore its canals and architecture, visit a few museums, and enjoy some local cuisine.

To make the most of your one day, prioritize the attractions you’re most interested in, book the tickets and plan your itinerary with the help of this itinerary.

If you’re visiting Amsterdam in spring, don’t miss the Keukenhof Gardens and the tulip fields! Around 5 hours should give you enough time to explore the gardens and appreciate the tulip fields.

Do they speak English in Amsterdam?

Yes, English is widely spoken in Amsterdam and the Netherlands.

You’ll find that most locals, especially in the tourism industry, are fluent in English .

What time do bars/clubs close in Amsterdam?

Bars in Amsterdam typically close around 1:00 AM to 3:00 AM, while clubs can stay open later.

The exact closing times can vary depending on the specific establishment, the day of the week, and local regulations.

Dutch phrases for tourists

While most locals in Amsterdam speak English, learning a few basic Dutch phrases can be appreciated by locals and add a fun touch to your trip. Here are a few useful phrases:

  • Hello: Hallo
  • Thank you: Dank je wel (informal) / Dank u wel (formal)
  • Please: Alsjeblieft
  • Excuse me: Sorry
  • Yes: Ja / No: Nee
  • How much is this?: Hoeveel kost dit?
  • Where is…?: Waar is…?

Can you drink tap water?

Yes, tap water in Amsterdam is safe to drink.

The tap water quality in the Netherlands is generally very high, and it’s safe to drink from the tap in most places.

Can you smoke on the street?

Smoking tobacco is allowed on the streets in Amsterdam.

However, it is forbidden to smoke weed or others in the streets, parks and public places. This could result in a fine if you’re caught by the police.

Can you do Amsterdam in a day?

While you won’t be able to experience everything Amsterdam has to offer in just one day, you can certainly enjoy a memorable day exploring some of the city’s highlights.

Where are the I Amsterdam letters?

The famous “I Amsterdam” letters were a popular tourist attraction located at the Museumplein (Museum Square) in front of the Rijksmuseum.

However, the physical letters were removed from the Museumplein in December 2018 due to concerns about over-tourism and commercialization.

The letters have been relocated to different areas and events around Amsterdam from time to time. One of the sets can be spotted in the neighbourhood of Nieuw West, designed as an outdoor free-running and parkour track.

Final Thoughts

I hope you enjoyed this article! Please note that this itinerary provides my suggestions for Amsterdam’s highlights in one day. You can adjust accordingly based on your personal preferences and interests.

Be sure to consider opening hours and any potential entrance ticket requirements for the attractions you plan to visit.

Remember that Amsterdam is a compact city with many attractions within walking or biking distance, so you can cover a lot in a day.

Prioritize what you want to see and do to make the most of your short visit.

Enjoy your day in this amazing city!

This post may contain affiliate links, view our disclosure policy .

With so much to see and do, here’s how to spend the perfect one day in Seattle!

A city known for its coffee, culture, art, and world-famous market, there are literally so many exciting things to do in Seattle, Washington!

If you’re taking a day trip to Seattle or are looking for things to do in Seattle before a cruise, you’ll need to narrow down your options, however.

This guide walks you through what you can reasonably see and do in one day in Seattle, as well as includes additional things to do in Seattle if you have more time.

Stick around until the end to find our complete 1-day Seattle itinerary that includes a special note on things to do in Seattle before a cruise.

How to spend one day in Seattle from top US family travel blog, Travel With A Plan!

One Day in Seattle: Must-do Attractions

Seattle is home to beautiful scenery, iconic landmarks, lakes, mountains, and plenty of outdoor recreation!

If you’re limited to 24 hours in Seattle, I recommend spending the majority of your time in Seattle’s Downtown, Uptown, and Waterfront neighborhoods.

When concentrating on these three areas, you’ll maximize your time and see the city’s most notable sights.

Here, you’ll find the highest density of Seattle’s most popular attractions, all of which happen to be within walking distance of one another.

Fun Facts About Seattle

  • Seattle’s Waterfront is home to 9 historic piers , some of which have fun restaurants and activities. ( You’ll find several tourist attractions located on Pier 57 and Pier 59.)
  • Seattle is nicknamed the Emerald City because the city and surrounding areas are filled with lush greenery all year round – even in the fall and winter due to all the evergreen trees.

The International Fountain

What’s the best way to get around Seattle?

If you’re spending one day in Seattle, we recommend starting from a central location and then walking between Downtown, Uptown, and the Waterfront.

These locations are all within 1 mile of each other and are connected by safe, pedestrian-friendly sidewalks.

Alternatively, you can use rideshare apps like Uber and Lyft.

There’s also public transportation (bus, rail, water taxi) and a great  monorail system  in Seattle, however, learning the systems and timing them out can be tricky if you only have one day.

If you plan on doing some walking or spending time outdoors, I 100% recommend bringing along a packable rain jacket and travel-size umbrella . Rain showers are prevalent in Seattle and you’ll need these to stay dry.

One day in Seattle - Visit Pike Place Market!

1. Explore Pike Place Market

Downtown Seattle

A jaunt around Pike Place Market is one of the very best things to do in Seattle before a cruise or if you only have 24 hours in Seattle.

Known as the “soul of Seattle”, Pike Place Market is a 9-acre, multi-level market visited by nearly 10 million people each year.

It’s home to more than 300 commercial businesses, 200 craftspeople, 120 farmers, and nearly 500 apartments.

Here, you’ll find reasonably priced fresh seafood, produce, flowers, jewelry, crafts, and other handmade items.

Peruse the farmer’s market, chat with the local artisans, and grab a delicious bite to eat at its unique, exciting restaurants.

Keep in mind that the market can get very busy – especially when there are cruise ships in port.

It is typically less crowded if visiting before 12 PM.

The original Starbucks!

2. Visit the Original Starbucks

Seattle holds a special place in coffee history as the birthplace of the iconic Starbucks brand.

Having first opened in 1971, The Original Starbucks coffee shop is located on Pike Place Street in Pike Place Market.

Step inside and savor the aroma of freshly brewed coffee while admiring the nostalgic, vintage décor – after all, everything in the entire store is original: the floors, the fixtures, the counters.

It’s truly one of a kind.

Visiting the Original Starbucks offers a unique opportunity to connect with the roots of a global coffee phenomenon.

There is always a very long line to buy coffee as the Original Starbucks attracts hundreds of daily visitors. I didn’t personally stand in line to order anything, but I still enjoyed simply stopping by and photographing this little slice of history.

1-day Seattle itinerary

3. Visit Seattle Center

Uptown Seattle

Centered around the International Fountain, Seattle Center is a tourism and entertainment hub located in Uptown Seattle – just 1 mile from Seattle’s famous Pike Place Market.

Here, you’ll find seasonal festivals and events as well as:

  • The Space Needle
  • Chihuly Garden and Glass
  • International Fountain
  • Seattle Center Armory Food & Event Hall
  • Artists at Play (outdoor playground)
  • Skate Plaza (skateboard park)
  • Climate Pledge Arena
  • Gates Foundation Discovery Center
  • Museum of Pop Culture (MoPop)
  • Seattle Children’s Museum
  • Pacific Science Center

Space Needle

4. Ride up the Space Needle

The Space Needle is arguably the most iconic landmark in the city and is a must-do in you’re only visiting Seattle for one day.

If you’re not afraid of heights, I highly recommend buying a ticket to ride to the top! This experience is similar to visiting the Willis Tower in Chicago .

(It takes the Space Needle elevators 43 seconds to travel from the ground to the tower’s top level, 520 feet above Seattle.)

At the top, you’ll see amazing, panoramic views of Seattle as well as get to experience stepping onto The Loupe, the world’s first and only rotating glass floor.

Also located on the upper observation level are the Atmos Cafe and Atmos Wine Bar.

Additional planning tip: Visit the Space Needle at night for an amazing experience seeing the city lights!

Things to do in Seattle before a cruise

5. Expore Chichuly Garden and Glass

Seattle’s Chihuly Garden and Glass is conveniently located at the base of the Space Needle.

A must-visit attraction when spending one day in Seattle, this captivating exhibition features the extraordinary glass creations of Dale Chihuly.

Here, you can explore both its indoor galleries and outdoor gardens full of intricate glasswork.

The combination of artistry, nature, and the play of light makes Chihuly Garden and Glass a truly enchanting experience not to be missed in Seattle.

Though it’s a bit hard to portray just how awesome this place is, our entire family (both kids and adults) loved visiting here and had fun exploring and taking photos of the amazing glass sculptures.

Additional planning tip: For the best value, bundle an admission ticket to the Space Needle and Chihuly Garden and Glass from their corresponding websites.

Red sculpture at the Olympic Sculpture Park

6.  Take Photos at Olympic Sculpture Park

Seattle Waterfront

Seattle’s Olympic Sculpture Park is a captivating outdoor art space nestled along the city’s waterfront.

It showcases a diverse collection of contemporary sculptures and installations, alongside waterfront views of Puget Sound.

Stroll through the park’s winding paths, discovering captivating artworks by renowned artists.

With its tranquil atmosphere and stunning setting, the Olympic Sculpture Park offers a unique opportunity to engage with art in an outdoor environment.

This park is entirely free to visit.

24 hours in Seattle - ride the Seattle Great Wheel

7.  Ride the Seattle Great Wheel

The Seattle Great Wheel is located on Seattle’s Pier 57 and offers panoramic views of the city’s skyline and Elliott Bay.

This iconic, 175-foot tall Ferris wheel features fully enclosed, climate-controlled gondolas, ensuring a comfortable and enjoyable ride in any weather.

As you ascend, the stunning vistas unfold, showcasing Seattle’s beauty from a new perspective.

Whether it’s a romantic date, a family outing, or a solo adventure, a visit to the Seattle Great Wheel promises an unforgettable experience if you only have 1 day in Seattle.

8. Take a harbor tour with Argosy Cruises

Also located on Pier 57 is the departure point of Seattle’s Argosy Cruises .

Hop aboard an Argosy Cruise and embark on a scenic cruise through Elliott Bay, Puget Sound, or Lake Washington.

Along the journey, you’ll be treated to breathtaking views of the Seattle skyline, iconic landmarks, and majestic mountains.

With informative narration, friendly staff, and the opportunity to see Seattle from a unique vantage point, an Argosy Cruise is a fantastic way to experience the beauty and charm of the Emerald City.

Seattle Aquarium

9. Go to the Seattle Aquarium

The Seattle Aquarium is a captivating marine sanctuary located on Pier 59.

Dive into the wonders of the Pacific Northwest’s underwater world as you explore engaging exhibits and observe fascinating marine creatures.

From playful otters, harbor seals, pufferfish, and a giant Pacific octopus, the aquarium showcases a diverse array of aquatic life.

Interactive touch pools and educational programs provide opportunities to learn about marine conservation.

With its commitment to inspiring stewardship of the marine environment, a visit to the Seattle Aquarium promises both entertainment and enlightenment for visitors of all ages.

10. Browse a museum

One of the best ways to spend a few hours in Seattle is to browse its exciting museums.

Best known for its vibrant art scene and downtown galleries, the city is also home to special-interest museums that may pique your interest.

Museum of Pop Culture : Explore contemporary pop culture at MoPop , a non-profit museum with incredible music-history artifacts, video game exhibits, film genre favorites, and the Science Fiction and Fantasy Hall of Fame.

Seattle Art Museum : This downtown museum is just a short walk from Pike Place Market. Visit the Seattle Art Museum to view stunning works of art with global collections and fascinating rotating exhibits.

Seattle Asian Art Museum : Located in Volunteer Park, the Seattle Asian Art Museum is home to an impressive Asian art collection. Self-guided tours of the museum are available for free with your smartphone device.

Pacific Science Center : Curious minds of all ages will enjoy learning (and playing) at the Pacific Science Center. Experience interactive discovery games, IMAX theaters, and laser show spectacles.

Seattle Children’s Museum: Located on the lower floor of the Armory in Seattle Center, the museum currently features 18,000 sq feet of play space with 11 exhibits designed for kids 6 months to 8 years.

Best Seattle restaurants

11. Sample the local cuisine

Seattle has a thriving food scene you don’t want to miss out on!

Whether you have time for a quick meal before your cruise or a few days to sample the goods, I highly recommend you try some local restaurants over familiar chains.

If you have the time, try a Seattle food tour for locally-loved favorites.

Seattle restaurants that are worth a try include:

  • The Pink Door – Italian American
  • Sushi Kashiba – Upscale Japanese
  • The Wayward Vegan – Vegan American diner-style
  • Plum Bistro – Plant-based and sustainability-focused
  • Cafe Juanita – Northern Italian with local ingredients
  • The Walrus and the Carpenter – Fresh seafood and American plates
  • Cafe Munir – Lebanese
  • Barking Dog Alehouse – Seattle-style hot dogs, causal seating

12.  Go Whale-watching

Want the chance to see magnificent orca whales?

Go on a whale-watching tour with FRS Clipper .

There’s also a possibility to see humpback, minke, and gray whales!

*Note that whale sightings are guaranteed – and on the chance that you don’t spot them, you’ll be offered a free trip.

13. Spend time in Pioneer Square

If you’re looking to venture out of the tourist hub while spending one day in Seattle, consider spending an hour or two in Pioneer Square.

Pioneer Square is one of my favorite neighborhoods in the city and is a great place to grab breakfast, window shop, and wander the charming streets.

Known as Seattle’s “first neighborhood,” Pioneer Square encompasses a lot of the local culture, making it a great way to integrate yourself into the city.

Streets are lined with 1800’s Romanesque Revival buildings, trendy restaurants, and fun shopping opportunities.

14. Explore a park

The Pacific Northwest is known for its natural beauty, with ample green space to enjoy.

Whether you’re looking for an active hike or a spot to lay out and enjoy a picnic lunch, consider visiting one of Seattle’s parks.

Kerry Park: The park is perched on a hill in the Queen Anne neighborhood, offering panoramic vistas that make it a popular spot for photography, picnics, and enjoying the stunning scenery.

Waterfront Park: Coming soon! The first piece of the park, Pier 62, is now open while the rest of the park is being built. Waterfront Park completion is set for 2025.

Discovery Park : Seattle’s largest public park, Discovery Park overlooks Puget Sound with a backdrop of the Cascade and Olympic Mountains. Enjoy a walking trail, bike ride, or picnic on the grass.

Olympic National Park : Located nearby in Port Angeles, Olympic National Park is one of the United States’ premier national parks – containing three unique ecosystems (glaciated mountains, temperate forest, and Pacific coastline).

Camp, hike, fish, ski, snowshoe, or go tide-pooling in this incredible park.

The Waterfront

1 Day Seattle Itinerary

For ultra convenience (and comfort!) we stayed at Seattle Marriott Waterfront when spending one day in Seattle.

The Seattle Marriott Waterfront is located directly across the street from Pier 66 (the Norwegian cruise terminal) and is within walking distance to this entire 1-day Seattle itinerary.

They’ll even store your luggage for you before check-in while you explore the city, or after your cruise, if you have a later flight.

Though the nightly rates are a bit steep, I highly recommend this hotel as the best place to stay in Seattle (especially if you’re only there for 1 day).

8:00 AM = Breakfast at Biscuit Bitch (Mmmm!) in Pike Place Market with donuts at Daily Dozen Donut Company to follow.

9:00 AM -12:00 PM = Explore Pike Place Market and visit the Original Starbucks. Try a Piroshky or one of the market’s other infamous foods.

12:00 – 1:00 PM = Visit the Space Needle (purchase a Chihuly Garden and Glass combo ticket)

1:00 – 2:00 PM = Visit Chihuly Garden and Glass

2:00 – 3:00 PM = Explore the rest of Seattle Center and have a late lunch at The Armory Food Hall

3:00 – 4:00 PM = Walk through the Olympic Sculpture Park

4:00 – 6:00 PM = Visit the Seattle Aquarium on Pier 59 or any of Seattle’s parks or museums

4:00 – 9:00 PM = Explore Pier 57, take an evening Argosy Harbor Cruise ( if you have time ), and ride the Seattle Great Wheel at sunset

Seattle Belltown neighborhood

Things to Do in Seattle If You Have More Time

If you find yourself with more time to explore Seattle, there are several additional activities and attractions that go beyond the well-known landmarks.

Venture beyond the city center to uncover diverse neighborhoods, local theaters, and surrounding mountains and lakes.

If you’re looking for unique things to do in Seattle, or if you have more time, venture out to Seattle’s other fun neighborhoods including:

  • Belltown – located between Pike Place Market and Seattle Center; legendary music scene, boutiques, and trendy cafes
  • Queen Anne – connected to downtown via the vintage monorail; inviting eateries and boutiques
  • South Lake Union – thriving tech area of Seattle located on Lake Union
  • Chinatown – one of the nation’s most dynamic and historic Asian American communities
  • Fremont, Capitol Hill, University District, and more!

In addition, if you have 2 days in Seattle, consider taking a 35-minute ferry ride across Elliott Bay to spend a day on Bainbridge Island .

Once you’ve arrived, you’ll be greeted by the island’s abundant natural beauty with several beautiful gardens and trails.

Popular activities on Bainbridge Island include:

  • A visit to Lytle Beach
  • Shop at the flagship REI store in the Cascade neighborhood
  • Graffiti viewing at Blakely Harbor Park
  • A picnic at Battle Point Park
  • Enjoying fresh seafood at B.I. Fish Company
  • Exploring Bainbridge Island Museum of Art
  • Shopping for Artisan gifts and souvenirs

Finally, here are some additional things to do if you have 1 or 2 days in Seattle and want to explore more of the city.

Things to Do in Seattle Before A Cruise

Seattle is a popular seaport city, and as you can see, there are several things to do in Seattle before a cruise.

When you’re planning on a Seattle-docking cruise and aren’t a local, you’ll probably have a day or so of downtime between your flight and setting sail.

Take advantage of this time block, no matter how short, by using or customizing our Seattle 1-day itinerary to your liking.

If you only have time for one activity in Seattle before a cruise, I’d definitely choose Pike Place Market as the place to go!

Cruises that leave from Seattle

These are some of the major cruise lines that depart from Seattle.

  • Celebrity Cruises – Alaska, Hawaii, Pacific Coastal
  • Royal Caribbean – Alaska, Pacific Coastal,
  • Princess Cruises – Alaska, Pacific Coastal, Hawaii
  • Holland America – Alaska, Pacific Coastal, Pacific Northwest, Yukon + Denali
  • Norwegian Cruise Line – Alaska

Check with your cruise line for transportation offers, travel recommendations, and more.

Most cruise lines also often offer complimentary shuttle services between the airport or hotel and your cruise terminal.

Also, for information on complimentary luggage storage and transfer, read about Port Valet from the Port of Seattle.

Additional planning tip : Make sure you double-check which Seattle cruise terminal you’re leaving from, as different cruise lines use different terminals.

Major cruise ship terminals include:

  • Bell Street Cruise Terminal (Pier 66) : Located directly across the street from Seattle Marriott Waterfront – you can literally roll your suitcases to the cruise ship! This is a popular terminal for Norwegian cruises .
  • Smith Coast Cruise Terminal (Pier 91) : This is a popular terminal for Princess, Royal Caribbean, Celebrity, and Holland American cruises.

One Day in Seattle: Conclusion

Seattle is a great city to explore as a day trip, or if you’re departing from the city on a cruise.

There are literally so many iconic things to see and do – which conveniently, are all located within walking distance of one another.

Whether you’re taking a mini Pacific Northwest road trip, or just have a morning to spare before you set sail, these exciting Seattle activities are well worth the effort.

Happy travels!

what-should-i-pack-for-a-1-day-trip

Introduction

Planning a one-day trip can be exciting, whether you’re taking a short getaway or exploring a nearby destination. However, it’s essential to pack wisely to ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience. The key is to bring only the essentials while taking into account the activities, weather, and duration of your trip. In this article, we’ll provide you with a comprehensive guide on what you should pack for a one-day trip.

When packing for a one-day trip, it’s important to strike a balance between being prepared and traveling light. You want to have everything you need without feeling weighed down by heavy bags. Paying attention to the weather forecast and the activities you have planned will help you determine the appropriate clothing, accessories, and necessities to pack.

Keep in mind that your packing should be tailored to the specific needs of your trip. If you’ll be spending the day hiking, for example, you’ll need different items than if you were going on a city sightseeing tour. Having a checklist handy can also help you stay organized and ensure that you don’t forget anything important.

In this article, we’ll cover essential clothing and accessories, snacks and food, hygiene and personal care items, electronics and entertainment, medications and first aid, as well as miscellaneous items that can come in handy during your one-day trip. So, let’s dive in and find out the must-haves to make your one-day trip a memorable and hassle-free experience!

Essential Clothing and Accessories

When it comes to clothing, it’s important to consider the weather and activities you’ll be engaging in during your one-day trip. Dressing appropriately will ensure your comfort and enjoyment throughout the day. Here are some essential clothing items and accessories to pack:

  • Comfortable footwear: Choose a pair of shoes that are suitable for the activities you have planned. If you’ll be doing a lot of walking, opt for comfortable sneakers or walking shoes. If you’ll be near water, consider water-resistant sandals or flip-flops.
  • Weather-appropriate clothing: Check the weather forecast and pack clothing accordingly. If it’s going to be sunny and hot, pack lightweight and breathable clothing. If it’s going to be cool or rainy, bring a jacket or sweater and an umbrella.
  • Layering pieces: It’s always a good idea to pack a few versatile layering pieces, such as a cardigan or a lightweight jacket. This allows you to adjust to changing temperatures throughout the day.
  • Comfortable bottoms: Choose pants, shorts, or skirts that you feel comfortable in and that are appropriate for the activities you’ll be engaging in. Opt for materials that are breathable and allow for ease of movement.
  • Sun protection: Don’t forget to pack sun protection items such as a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen to shield yourself from harmful UV rays, especially if you’ll be spending time outdoors.
  • Accessories: Depending on your personal style and preferences, you may want to pack accessories such as a scarf, a belt, or a small handbag to complete your outfit and carry your essentials.

Remember, it’s important to pack only the essentials and avoid overpacking. Stick to versatile and functional clothing pieces that can be mixed and matched easily. This will not only save space in your bag but also give you more flexibility in styling your outfits.

Next, let’s move on to the section on snacks and food, as keeping yourself fueled and energized is crucial during a one-day trip!

Snacks and Food

When embarking on a one-day trip, it’s important to pack some snacks and food to keep you nourished and energized throughout the day. This is especially essential if you’ll be engaging in activities that require physical exertion or if you have dietary preferences or restrictions. Here are some tips on what to include:

  • Portable snacks: Pack snacks that are easy to carry and require no refrigeration, such as granola bars, trail mix, fruit, or nuts. These will provide you with a quick energy boost when you need it.
  • Light meals: If your trip extends over mealtime, consider packing a light meal or opting for convenient options such as pre-made sandwiches or wraps. Alternatively, you can explore local eateries and grab something to go.
  • Hydration: Staying hydrated is crucial during a trip. Carry a reusable water bottle and refill it whenever necessary. You can also bring along some electrolyte packets or sports drinks to help replenish lost fluids.
  • Special dietary needs: If you have specific dietary needs, be sure to pack snacks and food items that cater to those requirements. For example, if you follow a vegan or gluten-free diet, ensure you have suitable options available.
  • Utensils and containers: It’s helpful to pack some reusable utensils and containers, especially if you plan on buying food from local markets or food stalls. This way, you can reduce waste and enjoy your meals comfortably.

Having snacks and food readily available will not only help you stay satiated but also save you time and money. You won’t have to constantly search for food options, and you can make the most of your day by having meals and snacks whenever and wherever is convenient for you.

Next, let’s move on to the section on hygiene and personal care items, as staying clean and fresh is important during your one-day trip!

Hygiene and Personal Care Items

Maintaining good hygiene and personal care during your one-day trip is essential for your comfort and well-being. Whether you’re spending the day exploring the city or engaging in outdoor activities, packing the right hygiene and personal care items will ensure you stay fresh throughout the day. Here are some essentials to include:

  • Travel-sized toiletries: Opt for travel-sized versions of your favorite toiletries such as toothpaste, toothbrush, shampoo, conditioner, soap, and moisturizer. These will take up less space in your bag and comply with airline regulations if you’re flying.
  • Hand sanitizer: Keep a small bottle of hand sanitizer handy to maintain cleanliness, especially when soap and water are not readily available.
  • Wet wipes: Pack a packet of wet wipes for refreshing your face and hands throughout the day. They can also come in handy for wiping down surfaces or cleaning up spills.
  • Tissues or toilet paper: Carry a small pack of tissues or a roll of toilet paper to be prepared for any unexpected situations where these essentials may not be readily available.
  • Deodorant: Stay fresh and odor-free by packing a travel-sized deodorant. Choose a scent that you enjoy and that provides long-lasting protection.
  • Disposable bags: Carry a few small plastic bags for disposing of trash or storing wet items, such as soiled tissues or damp clothes.
  • Personal medication: If you take any prescription medications or require specific over-the-counter medications, be sure to pack them in a secure and easily accessible place.

By ensuring that you have these hygiene and personal care essentials with you, you can tackle any unforeseen situations and maintain a sense of cleanliness and freshness during your one-day trip.

Next, let’s move on to the section on electronics and entertainment, as having some form of amusement can enhance your overall travel experience!

Electronics and Entertainment

While it’s important to disconnect and enjoy the present moment during your one-day trip, having certain electronics and entertainment options can enhance your overall experience. Here are some items to consider packing:

  • Smartphone or tablet: Your smartphone or tablet can serve as a valuable tool during your trip. Not only can you use it for navigation and capturing memories with its camera, but you can also access travel apps, listen to music, or read e-books.
  • Headphones: A good pair of headphones can provide entertainment and privacy while on the go. Use them to listen to your favorite music, podcasts, or audiobooks to make your journey more enjoyable.
  • Portable charger: Keep your electronic devices charged throughout the day by bringing a portable charger or power bank. This way, you won’t have to worry about running out of battery when you need your device the most.
  • Portable speaker: If you’re traveling with a group or enjoy listening to music in a larger space, consider packing a portable Bluetooth speaker. It can add a fun and lively ambiance to your day.
  • Travel games or cards: If you’re traveling with family or friends, bring along some small travel games or a deck of cards. They can provide entertainment during downtime or while waiting for transportation.
  • Journal and pen: Bring a journal or notebook to jot down your thoughts, document your experiences, or sketch your surroundings. It can be a wonderful way to reflect on your trip later.

Remember to strike a balance between using your electronics and being present in the moment. Don’t let your devices distract you from experiencing the beauty and charm of your surroundings. Utilize them when necessary, but also take the time to immerse yourself in the destination and interact with the people and culture around you.

Next, let’s move on to the section on medications and first aid, as it’s important to be prepared for any unforeseen health-related situations during your one-day trip.

Medications and First Aid

When going on a one-day trip, it’s crucial to be prepared for any potential health-related issues. Packing essential medications and a basic first aid kit can ensure your safety and well-being throughout the day. Here are some items to consider:

  • Prescription medications: If you take any prescription medications, be sure to pack them in their original packaging and carry them with you. It’s important to have enough for the entire trip, including any delays or unexpected circumstances.
  • Over-the-counter medications: Pack a small assortment of over-the-counter medications such as pain relievers, antacids, allergy medication, and motion sickness tablets. These can come in handy for minor ailments and discomforts.
  • First aid supplies: Carry a basic first aid kit containing adhesive bandages, antiseptic wipes, gauze pads, adhesive tape, tweezers, and scissors. This allows you to address minor cuts, bruises, or blisters that may occur during your trip.
  • Emergency contact information: Have a list of emergency contact numbers, including your personal doctor and any emergency services for the destination you’ll be visiting. It’s also a good idea to carry your health insurance information.
  • Allergy or specific medical condition information: If you have any allergies or specific medical conditions, consider carrying a card or a note that outlines this information. This can be useful in case of an emergency or if you require medical attention.

Having these medications and first aid supplies on hand will give you peace of mind and ensure that you’re prepared for any minor health issues that may arise during your one-day trip. However, it’s important to note that if you have a specific medical condition or require specialized care, it’s best to consult with your healthcare provider before your trip.

Finally, let’s move on to the section on miscellaneous items that can come in handy during your one-day trip!

Miscellaneous Items

Aside from the essentials mentioned earlier, there are a few miscellaneous items that can prove to be quite handy during your one-day trip. These items can enhance your comfort, convenience, and overall experience. Here are some miscellaneous items to consider packing:

  • Cash and cards: Carry some cash and at least one credit or debit card for any unexpected expenses or situations where electronic payment may not be accepted.
  • Reusable water bottle: Stay hydrated throughout the day by carrying a reusable water bottle. It’s not only eco-friendly but also saves you money on purchasing bottled water.
  • Travel umbrella: If there’s a chance of rain in the forecast, consider packing a compact travel umbrella to keep dry during your outdoor activities.
  • Travel towel or sarong: A lightweight and quick-drying travel towel or sarong can serve multiple purposes, such as a beach towel, picnic blanket, or even a wrap if it gets chilly.
  • Travel adapters: If you’re traveling to another country, ensure that you have the appropriate travel adapters to charge your electronic devices.
  • Snacks and treats: Apart from the snacks mentioned earlier, you might also want to pack some extra treats or comfort food to indulge in during your one-day trip.
  • Maps and guidebooks: If you prefer a more traditional approach to navigation, consider bringing physical maps or guidebooks to help you explore your destination.
  • Ziplock bags: These versatile bags can serve a variety of purposes, from organizing small items in your bag to keeping your electronics or important documents protected from moisture.

These miscellaneous items may seem small, but they can make a big difference in ensuring a smooth, enjoyable, and comfortable one-day trip. As with any packing list, consider your personal preferences and the specific needs of your trip, and modify accordingly.

How to See the BEST of Amsterdam in One Day (+Map, Itinerary & Tips)

Visiting Amsterdam for just one day and looking for an itinerary that covers some of the best places to see and things to do on a first visit? This detailed one-day itinerary and our experience-based tips will help you get the most out of your day in Amsterdam. Find out!

This itinerary includes many of the top sights that you can visit in Amsterdam in a day. It is based on a day trip itinerary that we personally follow when we want to show someone the very best of the city in a day.

The first time we planned a day trip to Amsterdam, I did some research on what we could do in Amsterdam in one day and found some great advice. However, I had to read a paper travel guide and seven different websites before I came up with a somewhat feasible (and actually doable) itinerary with the VERY BEST things to do in Amsterdam if you only have one day .

Thus this guide – to save you all the guesswork and help you make the most out of your trip.

Yes, there are many amazing and quirky museums in Amsterdam, beautiful parks, and lots of great bars and cafes where you can have the best meal in town… But unless you have more than one day, you will probably not want to waste your time shopping at the huge warehouse Bijenkorf or walking to the other side of town in search of that one restaurant that someone recommended…

So this is my no-nonsense guide to the best things to see and do in Amsterdam in one day, including approximate hours and many useful tips to help you plan your time . At the bottom of the post, you can find an overview of this recommended 1-day Amsterdam itinerary and some additional suggestions on what to see and do in and near Amsterdam if you have more time.

Top Experiences for 1 day in Amsterdam:

  • Van Gogh Museum (must book in advance!).
  • Canal Cruise (upgrade with cheese & wine option!).
  • Heineken Experience (18+).

1 day in Amsterdam

Good to know: Amsterdam’s city center is not big and is very walkable, so you can see and do quite a lot in one day. But you need to decide in advance what you absolutely want to see because some experiences have to be pre-booked. Our itinerary below provides all the practical info you’ll need.

Please note that the hours are only indicated for your reference to give you a rough idea of how much time you need for each place or activity.

To help you plan your day in Amsterdam, I also created a map indicating all the sights mentioned in this guide – see below. It will give you a better idea of where all the places are and help you decide on the best things to see and do if you only have one day in Amsterdam.

And if this guide inspires you to stay longer, check out this guide with all the best sights and tourist attractions in Amsterdam that are worth visiting the most!

How to use this map:  Use your computer mouse (or fingers) to zoom in or out. Click on the icons to get more information about each place. Click the arrow on the top left corner for the index. Click the star next to the map’s title to add it to your Google Maps account. To view the saved map on your smartphone or PC, open Google Maps, click the menu and go to ‘Your Places’/’Maps’. If you want to print the map or see it in a bigger window, click on ‘View larger map’ in the top right corner.

Here’s what to do in Amsterdam in one day:

1. Explore Amsterdam Canals on Foot

9 – 10 AM.

There are many canals in Amsterdam, but if you only have one day, there are three main canals that shouldn’t be missed: Herengracht , Prinsengracht , and Keizersgracht . All dug in the 17th century during the Dutch Golden Age and surrounded by some of the most beautiful traditional Dutch houses that Amsterdam is famous for.

Singel is another canal that is definitely worth strolling along, as is the Brouwersgracht .

Actually, you can skip the Herengracht canal when exploring Amsterdam canals on foot, because it’s one of the main canals, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and you will probably pass here by boat. This brings me to the second thing you must do in Amsterdam…

2. Take a Canal Cruise

10 – 11 AM.

If I were to choose just one thing that you absolutely must do in Amsterdam , it would be a canal cruise . Whether you are visiting Amsterdam for one day or a week, don’t miss this! No matter how much exploring you do on foot, seeing the city from a boat gives a completely different perspective. It’s also a perfect way to see a lot without having to walk even more.

When it comes to Amsterdam canal cruises, there are countless options . Some excellent, some good, and some… not so good. But how do you know it when you are in town and are overwhelmed by all the boats you see there? We thought that the best way to avoid disappointment and long queues would be to research and book the canal cruise in advance. And indeed, it saved us lots of time and we got exactly what we expected.

After some research, we quickly found this boat tour that looked perfect. Customer reviews were good too, so the choice was quickly made. Because we had an advance booking, we could pass the long line of people who were waiting for a boat without a reservation. This was mid-October (and this is one of the most popular canal cruises in the city)!

TIP: If you are traveling to the Netherlands in high season, I strongly suggest booking your canal cruise in advance. This is especially the case if you are short on time and only have one day to see the best of Amsterdam.

PRO TIP: If you are visiting Amsterdam in the warm season (mid-March to the beginning of November), there are very nice open-boat canal cruises available too. They run in the winter as well, but it might be a bit too cold… Anyway, these cruises have multiple departure locations and you can upgrade with other options such as drinks or snacks. On these luxury canal cruises, everyone gets the best seat. Nowadays, we always book open-boat cruises. They only cost a few euros more than regular tours on bigger boats, but it’s well worth it!

Good to know: For this itinerary, you could opt for a canal cruise starting at the Central Station. Also, you can take the canal cruise first and do more exploring on foot after that – it all depends on where and when exactly you start your day in Amsterdam.

3. See Damrak, Dam Square, and the Royal Palace

11.15 – 11.30 AM.

Next, walk on Damrak , the big avenue running from the Central Station ( Amsterdam Centraal ) to the Royal Palace on Dam Square.

Damrak is home to the former stock exchange building, the monumental Beurs van Berlage , and some other historic buildings that you often see on postcards from Amsterdam.

This is one of the most photographed places in Amsterdam and is always nice to see, at any time of the day and any season.

Damrak boats and historic buildings in Amsterdam

Dam Square with the Royal Palace is one of the most well-known locations in Amsterdam. This is the historic heart of the city where it all started. Many events take place here and it’s always very lively in this area.

You don’t need much time to see it (unless you go inside the Palace), but it would be unthinkable not to pass here when visiting Amsterdam.

TIP: If you want to see the interior of the Royal Palace in Amsterdam, check in advance if it’s open on the day of your visit, and be sure to reserve a ticket . Another very popular place to see here is Madame Tussauds wax museum . With just a day in Amsterdam, it’s probably not a priority. But it’s definitely possible, you’ll just have to adjust the itinerary based on your interests.

4. Visit Amsterdam Begijnhof

11.30 – 11.45 AM.

If you are looking for a more authentic experience in Amsterdam, the Begijnhof is a true hidden gem right off the hectic city center.

This small area houses a church, historic houses, and one of the two original wooden houses in Amsterdam. However, don’t expect to be alone – it’s just as popular with tourists as the rest of Amsterdam.

Begijnhof is open daily from 9 AM to 5 PM and is free of charge. There are two entrances: at the Northern side of the Spui and at the Gedempte Begijnensloot (at the end of the Schuttersgallery).

5. Floating Flower Market

Even if you are not planning to buy any flowers, the floating flower market is a must in Amsterdam. You can buy flower bulbs, all kinds of souvenirs, or just walk around.

You don’t need much time there, but it’s a fun place to visit and take some colorful pictures.

If you visit Amsterdam in spring or in the summer, you’ll find lots of fresh flowers here. The rest of the year, the market mostly sells flower bulbs and traditional Dutch souvenirs.

If you are looking for a nice place for lunch , you’ll find plenty of options in this area, or on the way to the next place in your itinerary. If you don’t want to waste too much time for lunch, simply get some Dutch pancakes, syrup waffles ( stroopwafels ), or a small snack.

6. Visit One Museum: Van Gogh Museum, Rijksmuseum, Anne Frank House, or Rembrandt House

1 – 3 PM.

Amsterdam is famous for its museums , but it’s difficult to see more than one of them if you only have a day in the city. And even if you decide to visit just one museum inside, you’ll have to plan ahead!

If you are keen to visit one of the most famous museums like the Van Gogh Museum , Rijksmuseum , or Anne Frank House , pick one that interests you the most and make sure to book your timed-entry tickets in advance (you can do so via the links above).

Otherwise, if you didn’t get timed-entry tickets in advance, just forget it. It’s not worth spending two hours of your time queuing just to get into a museum if you only have one day in Amsterdam. Also, most of the time these top museums don’t even have walk-in tickets at all.

Good to know: If you want to visit Anne Frank House, you can buy tickets on their website (and only there!) about 6 weeks before your travel date. The tickets are timed and non-refundable, and you cannot change your time slot.

TIP: With just a day in Amsterdam and following this itinerary, we recommend visiting the Van Gogh Museum and seeing the exterior of the impressive Rijksmuseum building on your way there (the two museums are located just next to each other).

Alternatively, if the tickets for the most suitable time slots at Van Gogh Museum are not available anymore, consider visiting the Rembrandt House Museum . It’s one of the best museums in Amsterdam (and a personal favorite), and you only need an hour for a thorough visit. Also here, be sure to book timed-entry tickets in advance to avoid disappointment.

7. Museumplein

Even if you don’t have the time to visit any of the museums, it’s worthwhile to walk to the Museumplein (Museum Square) just to see the beautiful building of Rijksmuseum. You can also visit the (small) garden of this museum free of charge.

Many of the best museums in Amsterdam are located here: Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum, Moco Museum, Diamant Museum, and Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam.

Various events are held on Museum Square too. For example, if you visit Amsterdam at Christmas , this is where you will find the main Christmas Market, a big Christmas tree, and in some winters also an ice skating rink.

The famous  I Amsterdam sign  used to be located on the Museumplein at the back of the museum. However, the city council found that the sign encouraged mass tourism and selfie culture and removed the letters in December 2018. So if you absolutely want to take a picture with the famous IAmsterdam sign, you can still find one close to the bus stand at Schiphol Airport.

Next, walk to Heineken Brewery, about 10-15 minutes walk from here.

I Amsterdam sign at the Rijksmuseum can only be photographed without the crowds at dawn

8. Heineken Experience

3.45 – 5 PM.

Visiting Heineken’s oldest brewery, now converted into an interactive museum, is another popular thing to do in Amsterdam. Heineken is so typically Dutch that it’s worth including the Heineken Experience in your Amsterdam one day itinerary even if you are not a fan of the beer.

The tour starts with a short introduction by the staff, after which you can see the rest at your own pace. The experience is very well done with interactive games like ‘Brew U’ that allow you to experience what it’s like to be a bottle of Heineken, to mention just one… And of course, you get to taste some free Heineken (or soft drinks for those who don’t drink alcohol) at the end of the tour.

Just in case you wonder, no alcohol is served under the age of 18 and you cannot visit here with kids.

TIP: Make sure to book your Heineken Experience in advance because it’s a very popular attraction. Otherwise, you’ll waste too much time queuing or may not be able to visit at all.

Visiting Heineken Experience is a great thing to do on a short visit in Amsterdam

9. Explore the Jordaan Neighbourhood

5.30 – 6 PM.

If you want to get a feel of an authentic residential Amsterdam far from the crowds and tourist attractions, don’t miss the charming Jordaan neighborhood .

There is no specific place you should go to, and no time limit that you should spend here. I suggest putting away the map and exploring the labyrinth of narrow streets dotted with local shops, quaint bars and cafes, and residential houses with cozy courtyard gardens…

You can skip Jordaan if you are really short on time, alternatively, you can go there for lunch.

TIP: Depending on your interests and the timing of your overall sightseeing plan, you could join this highly-rated food tour of Jordaan . They usually have several departure times in the afternoon. It’s a great way to get to know the local side of Amsterdam and try some Dutch food. It could be an alternative option for lunch in which case you’ll have to adjust your itinerary to make it work time-wise.

10. Stroll the Nine Streets

6 – 6.30 PM.

The Nine Streets (De Negen Straatjes) are the old cobbled streets that connect the main canals between Leidsegracht and Raadhuisstraat . You can easily explore these little streets together with the canals.

This area is famous for independent boutiques, specialty stores, and vintage shopping. It’s a very different shopping experience than the main shopping street Kalverstraat with big chain stores.

Nowadays, this is one of the most popular areas around Amsterdam canals in the city center, but because most businesses are rather small and they manage to keep most souvenir stores out, it still manages to keep its authenticity.

11. Visit the Red Light District

EVENING or LATE EVENING.

This historic part of Amsterdam may be a bit controversial, but is simply a must-see. The Red Light District may be best known for its coffee shops and window prostitution, but it also has a centuries-old history and beautiful architecture. In other words, it’s a very unique place in the world and therefore worth a short visit.

This area really comes to life in the evening, but it can easily be visited during the day, also with kids (just try to distract their attention from the ladies in the windows). For those of you who wonder if that’s a good idea, it’s really your call. But you may want to know that there is a children’s daycare center in the heart of the Red Light District. Locals treat this area just like any other neighborhood in the city.

If you want to experience the Red Light District to the fullest, it’s best to visit in the evening and/or on a weekend. Just try to be very open-minded when you come here.

Good to know: There are some nice guided tours of the Red Light District that are one of the best ways to visit the area. Some of our readers tell us that they felt unsafe in the area (we never did), so going on a tour might be a much more enjoyable way to visit if you are not confident going alone.

TIP: We recently took this highly-rated tour of the Red Light District and learned so much. Absolutely recommended!

12. Explore Amsterdam Canals at Night

AFTER DARK.

If your legs are still not sore, head back to the canals in the evening. The houses and the bridges are so nicely lit!

If you want to get the best of both worlds (i.e. see the canals in the evening and save your legs), why not take an evening canal cruise instead? This is the best way to end your day in Amsterdam.

TIP: During the winter holiday season (+- late November to mid-January), the city hosts Amsterdam’s Light Festival. There are many canal cruise options to experience the most impressive light installations in the evening. If you are visiting Amsterdam at this time of the year, don’t miss this!

Amsterdam 1-day itinerary

Below is an overview of what your day in Amsterdam could look like (and based exactly on what we did on one of the trips).

Here’s our recommended 1-day itinerary for Amsterdam:

  • 9 – 10 AM: Explore Amsterdam canals on foot.
  • 10 – 11 AM: Take a canal cruise (this is the most popular cruise ; in the warmer months, we recommend an open-boat canal cruise ).
  • 11.15 – 11.30 AM: See Damrak, Dam Square, and Royal Palace.
  • 11.30 – 11.45 AM: Visit Amsterdam Begijnhof.
  • Noon: Check out the floating flower market and have lunch.
  • 1 – 3 PM: Visit one museum – we recommend the Van Gogh Museum ( get tickets in advance !) or the Rembrandt House Museum ( tickets ).
  • 3.30 PM: Museum Square.
  • 3.45 – 5 PM: Heineken Experience (not a must, but if you go, get the tickets in advance as well).
  • 5.30 – 6.30 PM: Explore Jordaan neighborhood + Nine Streets.
  • Evening: Check out the Red Lights district (or take this highly-rated tour ).
  • After dark: Explore the canals at night (on foot or by boat ).
  • Dinner (or book a canal cruise that includes dinner ).

Is One Day Enough in Amsterdam?

One day is enough to get a taste of Amsterdam: tour the canals, walk around the city, explore some local neighborhoods, and visit at least one museum. Of course, you can’t see everything that Amsterdam has to offer in just a day. But if you are short on time and want to see the main highlights, then yes, you can see the best of Amsterdam in a day.

If you have more time in Amsterdam, you may want to visit some of the world-class museums, rent a bike or take a stroll in one of the many parks. Here you can find our suggestions for 2 days in Amsterdam , 3 days in Amsterdam , as well as 4 days in Amsterdam .

Alternatively, take a day trip from Amsterdam , visit the best places in the Dutch countryside , and explore more of the Netherlands.

TIP: If you are visiting Amsterdam in the spring, don’t miss the Keukenhof Gardens and Dutch tulip fields (you’ll need at least 5-6 hours to visit these places from Amsterdam).

Where to Stay in Amsterdam for the First Time

If you are visiting Amsterdam for the first time and want to discover the best that the city has to offer in a short time, stay as close to the city center as possible. An ideal location to stay for sightseeing in Amsterdam is southwest of Central Station. It’s a nice area, with lots of shops, restaurants, and within walking distance of all the main attractions.

Here are some specific hotel suggestions for central Amsterdam, for all budgets:

  • €€€€€ NH Collection Amsterdam Barbizon Palace – the most popular 5* hotel.
  • €€€€ Park Plaza Victoria Amsterdam – great location/value 4* hotel.
  • €€€ Eden Hotel Amsterdam – a very popular mid-budget hotel.
  • €€ ClinkNOORD Hostel – best-rated lower-budget hotel in the center.

TIP: Using the map below, you can quickly find the best deals for accommodation in Amsterdam’s city center. Simply insert your travel dates and group size, and you’ll see what’s available for your visit. Check it out!

Some Practical Tips for Visiting Amsterdam

  • Pack comfortable walking shoes – you will be walking a lot.
  • If you are not keen on walking a lot or if your accommodation is further away from the main sights, use public transport . This all-in public transport ticket (available for 1-7 days) is the best option since it includes all the buses, trams, metros, and even ferries in the city. If you just take a tram for one or two rides, you can simply pay contactless.
  • Renting a bike might be a nice way to explore the parks. But the city streets are so busy with people and bikes that even experienced local bikers have difficulties navigating. If you want to explore the highlights by bike , it’s best to opt for a bike tour vs going on your own.
  • If you don’t absolutely have to, don’t come to Amsterdam by car . We came from Belgium and visited Amsterdam for just one day and parking cost us 50 EUR.
  • And once again, Amsterdam is one of the busiest tourist destinations in Europe. So if you are planning any day trips or excursions, best book everything (accommodation, tours, and tickets) in advance – it will save you lots of time and frustration. Many of the most popular experiences are often sold out days (and some even several weeks) in advance.

Hello! I just came across this. Off to London for one week, but want to see as much as I can. Thinking about Eurostar to Amsterdam - looks as if I'll have a good six to seven hours and might just do as much as I can in Amsterdam. I like your ideas and your schedule! I'd probably spend as much money shopping as I would on train fare, and I believe the experience would last much longer! Thank you for the time and the research you put into the concise and fun itinerary!

Saturday 15th of April 2023

Sounds like a long but fun day, JoDee! You could also consider staying for two days if you want to take it a bit easier (in that case, see our 2-day itinerary for more info). In addition, you may want to check our guides about London and its surroundings if you are looking for more ideas of places to see (not that shopping isn't fun, but there is SO MUCH to do there!). Have a great trip!

Friday 7th of April 2023

Hi Jurga, so glad I came across your Amsterdam guide. We will have a day and half in Amsterdam en route to Lisbon. The full day happens to be Kings Day, which we plan to spend in the Tulip gardens at Keukenhof away from the huge crowds in Amsterdam city. The half day is on April 26 which is the day BEFORE Kings Day. We plan to go into the city on that half day, and loved your idea of a nighttime canal cruise. Do you know if a nighttime Canal Cruise would be too crazy/boisterous given it’s Kings Day the next day?

Saturday 8th of April 2023

Hi Imtiaz, I think that there will be crowds no matter where you go in that period. It's just busy at this time of the year with all the tulips, plus the Dutch really like to celebrate their King's Day. There is a big festival planned too. That being said, I don't think that a nighttime cruise would be much different from the other times though - it's more geared toward tourists anyway. You don't often see many locals on these cruises unless people who are visiting from outside the city. It will likely be busier on the canals with other boats (locals like to celebrate on their own little boats too, especially if the weather is nice), but it usually just adds to the atmosphere. If that's the only time you can visit Amsterdam, just do what you want to and make the best of it.

Friday 10th of February 2023

I have really enjoyed your website! I discovered it last year before our trip to Italy and am now reading it again as we prepare for our trip to London. We are thinking of hopping on a plane for one day to either Edinburgh or Amsterdam and wondered which of the two you would pick to visit. Our children are 16,14 and 10. I appreciate any feedback. Thank you!

Hi Julie, did you consider the practical side of taking a day trip from London by plane? It's going to take you a long time just to get to the airport, plus security checks, then get to the city from the airport where you arrive, etc. Not even to mention that the flights aren't always on time... In addition - if you would go to Amsterdam - you are entering Schengen Zone, so there will be passport checks, etc. And, depending on where you are originally from and when you will travel, you may need to get the new ETIAS travel authorization that the EU is introducing later this year. So purely for that, Edinburgh would be a much easier choice. But also there, I really don't know if I'd consider going there from London for just one day. There are so many amazing places in and near London that you can easily visit by train or with a tour without adding all the stress. Take a look at our recommendations for some of the best day trips from London. Families with teens all rave about the Warner Bros Harry Potter Studio Tour near London. If I were you, I'd just stay in London and explore more around there. Or, if you decide to go further, make it at least a few days so that it's worth all the hassle. Good luck with the planning!

Monday 6th of February 2023

Thank you for the helpful article, however, I must say the Red Lights District absolutely SHOULDN'T BE VISITED WITH KIDS!!! I am a grown adult and I couldn't walk through all of it with a friend. I think saying it's safe for kids is extremely bad advice.

Wednesday 8th of February 2023

Hi Elena, we visited Amsterdam with our kids multiple times and also walked through the Red Light District with them. While it's not the best place to take your kids at night, it's definitely possible to visit and perfectly ok during the day. I don't see how a few scarcely dressed women would make it unsafe for anyone.

If you walked around the area a bit longer, you would have noticed that there is a church right in the heart of the Red Light District and even a children's daycare center. Yes, locals - with kids - actually live here.

Many of our readers only visit Amsterdam once and want to see everything in the city on that trip. And if they have kids with them, they want to know if they can do everything with the whole family. That's why we indicate that it is indeed possible, adding that it's best to go during the day and that it's probably wise to distract the kids' attention from the windows ;). But to say that it would be unsafe is a totally different story. We never felt unsafe anywhere in Amsterdam, with or without kids.

Tuesday 24th of May 2022

Hi Jurga, I visited Amsterdam for a day and followed your suggestions to the T! Brilliant compilation... Thanks very much!

Wednesday 25th of May 2022

Thanks a lot for your kind feedback, Kirti. Glad to hear you enjoyed Amsterdam. Happy travels!

Essential information to spend one amazing day in Rome

Before we dive into the details of my step-by-step itinerary for Rome, I want to go over some useful information around logistics to help you plan your trip.

After all, you only have one day in Rome, so it’s important that you know some of these crucial tips, to make sure you make the most of your day.

How to get to Rome

Rome has two main airports, Leonardo da Vinci International Airport – Fiumicino (FCO) and Ciampino (CIA). From there you can then take either a train or bus into central Rome.

1 day travel

Wandering along the cute cobbled streets of Rome, Italy

Trains can be booked online beforehand on the Italian rail website; Trenitalia , or directly at the station from the kiosk. Bus tickets can be bought directly at the bus, or online beforehand.

Personally, I always suggest booking your airport transfer beforehand, especially if you’re visiting in busy season, as they can get full pretty quickly, and if you miss it you then have to wait for the next one.

You’re only in Rome for one day, so you want to make the most of them! Not waste time waiting around before you even get into the city. You can book your airport bus transfers below.

How to get around Rome in a day

Rome is pretty big city, but when it comes to the main attractions and historical sights, these are all located close to each other in the city centre, just a short walk away.

I’m a big fan of walking as a mode of transport when I travel, as it allows you to see the side streets and true vibe of a city, way more than you would just driving from one attraction to the next.

This Rome 1-day itinerary is designed to cover all the main highlights of Rome on foot, optimising your walking route, so that you don’t end up marching back and forth all over the city.

If you don’t fancy walking for too long, don’t worry, as Rome offers plenty of options.

My personal favourite way to get around Rome is to use e-scooters, such as Lime. I lived in Rome for months and used them all the time, you’ll find loads parked all the city and they’re great for short distances.

Just watch out for Rome’s cobbled lanes – you’ll be in for a pretty bumpy ride if you take a scooter along one of these!

If you can drive a motorbike, there is also a scooter sharing service called eCooltra, which is a more “serious” way to get around, and you can also go further than with e-scooters.

Rome’s also has a good public transport system, which takes you pretty everywhere around the city. You’ll also find taxis parked all over central Rome.

One thing you MUST do before your day in Rome

Rome is one of the most famous destinations in the world, featuring on pretty much everyone’s travel bucket list. As such, it gets very busy and the queues to enter its main attractions can be huge.

When I was living in Rome I’d walk past the Colosseum or Vatican, and I would see such gigantic queues that it always made me wonder how people ever decided to brave them.

Considering you have limited time and only one day in Rome, you don’t want to waste it queueing outside. If you want to visit the inside of famous attractions, you HAVE to purchase tickets online beforehand.

Check out popular Rome tours below!

Ticket prices are a bit higher for skip-the-line privileges, but trust me when I say, it will be well worth the investment. Here are the entrance tickets to some of the most popular Rome attractions.

Where to stay for one day in Rome

Even if you’re only spending one day in Rome, you’ll probably have to spend a night in Rome, either before or after your itinerary.

Choosing where to stay in Rome can be challenging. Personally I would opt for a hotel near the Colosseum , or near the Pantheon , so that you’re close to all the main attractions of Rome.

Having lived in Rome on and off, I tried my fair share of apartment rentals in Rome , and can confidently suggest some over others. I listed below some cool places to stay for every budget.

Budget: YellowSquare Rome – If you’re looking for a budget Rome hostel in a great position, with clean and modern dorms and a lovely social atmosphere, this is the place!

Mid-range: Albergo Abruzzi – This lovely boutique hotel in Rome is perfect if you want something nice that won’t break the bank. Located right next to the Pantheon, it’s in a winning position.

Luxury: Giallo Colosseo  –  If your Italy trip budget allows for it, this is a great place to treat yourself. From this apartment you get amazing Colosseum views directly from your bed, what more can you ask for?!

Best time to visit Rome

In my opinion, you could visit Rome at any time of the year and have a great time. Being a city, pretty much all the attractions and main sights are visible every month, regardless of the season.

That said, there are some seasons which will make your one day in Rome more pleasant. Spring in Rome is my favourite time of year.

The days are getting warmer and longer, the flowers are blooming, and Rome isn’t inundated by tourists like in summer. If you visit Italy in summer , I wouldn’t personally go to Rome, as it gets extremely hot.

I also really like Rome in winter , as the weather is milder than other places in Italy in winter , and you can do pretty much everything you would do in spring or summer, minus the huge tourist crowds and with a cheaper price tag.

Is one day in Rome enough?

When it comes to planning a Rome 1-day itinerary, this is the million dollar question. Locals will argue that no amount of time will ever be enough to really see a city, especially not one day.

However, having lived in Rome and having also visited as a tourist, I can confidently say that one day in Rome is enough to walk around the city, see the main sights from outside, get a feel for the Roman vibe, and visit the interior of one main attraction.

Realistically, one day isn’t enough to visit both the Vatican and the Colosseum. Not if you also want to wander around the city, see other sights like the Trevi Fountain, and in general spend an enjoyable day.

I’ve seen itineraries online saying you can do both, if you start your day at 7AM and then keep going until nightfall.

While it might be technically possible, do you really want to rush and pack your day in Rome that much?

Personally, I suggest choosing one or the other, so that you can have a more relaxed day. If you want to visit both, you will have to extend your Italy itinerary , and spend more days in Rome ; at least two days in Rome , if not three .

Do you need travel insurance for one day in Rome?

After my personal experience spending two nights in a private hospital in Tenerife, and having to pay for it out of pocket (it wasn’t cheap), I always recommend getting travel insurance .

You might not end up needing it, but for a small fee you can travel without worries. Personally, I suggest getting your Italy travel insurance with  Heymondo .

Heymondo offers tailor made travel insurance, providing the best value for money for your specific trip. You can also buy it once you’re already abroad and have forgotten about it before flying (which, if you’re anything like me, is quite likely).

Besides the usual cancellation, medical expenses, luggage coverage and general travel insurance services, Heymondo also has a 24/7 doctor chat and instant assistance through their app.

Rome 1-day itinerary map

We’ve gone over all the key knowledge you need for your day in Rome, so it’s time to finally dive into what you’ll actually be doing during your Rome itinerary!

Here is the map of your Rome 1-day itinerary walking route. As you can see, the total walking time is just over two hours, which is easily doable throughout a day.

It gives you plenty of time to stop during the day for photos, to go inside major attractions, to take food and drinks breaks and just generally enjoy your day in Rome.

Now let’s dive into the details of what exactly you’ll be seeing!

Rome 1-day itinerary

Start at the colosseum & roman forum  .

Of all the things to do in Rome in one day, seeing the Colosseum and the Roman Forum have to be top of your Italy bucket list .

For starters, it’s convenient: the Colosseum ticket allows access to the Roman Forum (and vice versa) so it makes sense to visit both to get the most out of your visit.

Secondly, they’re right next to each other, so you won’t have to travel far between these two big-hitter sights.

I highly recommend getting a skip the line ticket for the Colosseum , which will also get you the same skip the line access to the nearby Roman Forum.

Chilling by the Colosseum in Rome

Chilling by the Colosseum in Rome

I spent a few months living in Rome, and every time I walked past the Colosseum there was a really long line. If you only have one day in Rome, you don’t want to spend it queueing.

One tip is to make sure you book your tickets to the Colosseum for an early time slot, so that you can pack the most into your day as possible.

Plus the crowds tend to be slightly smaller early in the day, and you don’t want to waste your day waiting.

Click here to book your skip-the-line entrance to the Colosseum & Roman Forum!

Admiring the view over the Fori Romani in Rome

Then it’s onto the famous Pantheon. This is around a 20-minute walk from the Colosseum, or you could hop on a bus (route 85; around 10-15 minutes) to get you there quicker.

I personally recommend the walk, as it will take you past Via Dei Fori Imperiali and the Altare della Patria, two beautiful sights in the heart of Rome.

Your own curated Rome-in-one-day tour stops by the Pantheon, a former ancient temple dedicated to all the Roman gods turned church.

The original was commissioned by Marcus Agrippa in the reign of Augustus (27 BC to 14 AD). It was later rebuilt by Hadrian around 126 AD.

Take a moment to admire the impressive dome – it’s still to this day the world’s largest unreinforced concrete dome! No entrance fee required.

The Pantheon

Trevi Fountain

You can’t do a one day in Rome walking tour without stopping by the Trevi Fountain.

It’s an easy eight-minute walk from the Pantheon to the iconic fountain, which will no doubt be busy with visitors, but is nonetheless atmospheric and impressive to see.

Take your iconic Rome Instagram photos of the gorgeous 18th century Baroque fountain, and don’t forget to throw a coin in (over your shoulder, of course), as is the custom.

Legend has it that if you throw a coin in the Trevi Fountain, you’ll come back to Rome in the future. Every Rome itinerary should include a trip to the Trevi Fountain, and you don’t have to spend long there, either.

The beautiful facade of the Trevi fountain in Rome

Piazza di Spagna & Trinità dei Monti

Piazza di Spagna is another eight-minute stroll from the Trevi Fountain. It’s one of the most famous piazzas in the city, taking its name from the Spanish embassy which is still located in the square.

It’s also here that you’ll find the Spanish Steps, a famed meeting point which leads to the Trinità dei Monti church at the top.

This picturesque Renaissance church overlooks the goings-on of the piazza below – and, by a quirk of history, it’s actually the state property of France!

Terrazza del Pincio

Otherwise known as Pincian Terrace, your one day in Rome itinerary wouldn’t be complete without an awesome view over the Roman skyline . It takes around 10 minutes to reach from Trinità dei Monti.

Part of the sprawling gardens of the Villa Borghese, the 19th century hillside terrace looks out over the rooftops of Rome including the unmistakable dome of St Peter’s Basilica.

If you have spare time, you can spend a while strolling around the park, otherwise it’s onwards to Piazza del Popolo below (you can actually see it from the terrace).

One of the best views over Rome from Villa Borghese

Piazza del Popolo

Next stop on your Rome itinerary, is Piazza del Popolo. Though the name translates to “People’s Square”, the name is actually taken from the nearby Santa Maria del Popolo.

This wide-open space has a number of different interesting sights to take in, including an ancient Egyptian obelisk (it dates from between 1290 to 1279 BC !), a grand gate designed by architect Gian Lorenzo Bernini and fountains fed by centuries-old aqueducts.

For many years, the piazza was a place of public executions, the last of which took place in 1826.

You’ll get here by late afternoon, and this might be the perfect place to stop for a bite to eat, or just rest your feet for a while, grab a coffee and do a spot of people-watching.

Castel Sant’Angelo

If you feel like walking, it’s 20 minutes from Piazza del Popolo to Castel Sant’Angelo; it’s a pretty cool walk, as you’ll walk along Tiber River and get to cross over Ponte Sant’Angelo with its many angelic statues.

The castle tells the tale of Rome from its ancient past to the present day – from being built as the mausoleum for Emperor Hadrian and his family in 123-4 AD, being pillaged by Visigoths, and used as a fortress for the Popes from the 14th century onwards.

There’s even a secret passageway leading from the Castel Sant’Angelo all the way through the city to St Peter’s Basilica.

Sadly if you’re only spending one day in Rome, you won’t have time to go in, but it’s still an impressive building to admire from the outside.

Castel Sant'Angelo in Rome, Italy

Vatican City

Of all the places to visit in Rome in one day, the Vatican City should definitely be on the list – after all, this is a whole other country to visit! It’s around a 15-minute walk from Castel Sant’Angelo to the Vatican.

As I already mentioned, you won’t have time to visit the interior of both the Colosseum and Vatican in one day. However, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t at least admire them from the outside!

If you chose to visit the Colosseum, you can simply visit St. Peter’s Square, a pretty impressive sight in and of itself. You can wander around the square for a bit, and take in the unique sights.

There’s yet another ancient Egyptian obelisk here, not to mention the imposing facade of St. Peter’s Basilica: the centre of the Catholic Church.

If you chose to visit the Vatican, its museums and the Sistine Chapel, you’ll need to purchase a ticket online beforehand . Similarly to the Colosseum, you can get a skip-the-line entry, which I think is well worth the money.

Trastevere by night

After your trip to the Vatican City, you simply have to finish up your Rome one day itinerary in Trastevere.

This is simply a lovely neighbourhood to discover by night, with cobbled streets and lots of cool eateries and bars to discover.

Especially if you’re visiting Rome in summer , start off with an aperitivo and unwind after your busy day of exploring. Then you can head off for some dinner at one of the many restaurants in the district.

The vibrant Piazza Trilussa, in front of Ponte Sisto, is a meeting place for locals where warm evenings bring crowds and live music, and is a great place to start your night in Rome .

This is also where many Rome by night tours start, like the delicious cooking classes or street food tours.

Final thoughts on 1 day in Rome

There you have it, the ultimate best itinerary for one day in Rome! Have you been to Rome before? How did you find it? Let me know in the comments below!

In my personal opinion, having lived in Rome, this is the best way to visit Rome in one day.

This itinerary will allow you to see the famous sights of the Roman Empire and of ancient Rome, as well as enjoying the beautiful architecture and local vibe.

Rome is a city like no other. There’s lots to see, but by the end of this full day exploring it, you’ll have a pretty good idea of what the Eternal City is all about.

Some travellers base themselves in Rome, and from there then go on a day trip to Pompeii or even Capri , but I wouldn’t recommend that. Amalfi Coast is quite far, so stay in Amalfi Coast instead, so that you can properly experience Positano , hike the Path of the Gods , go on boat trips and more! and its beautiful surroundings.

I hope you have found this Rome in 1 day itinerary useful in planning your time in Rome, as well as your Italy itinerary . If you have any questions, just let me know in the comments below!

Boston Public Garden Boston Public Garden free

Though the Boston Public Garden sits right next to Boston Common , the two are quite different. The public garden is newer (established in 1837) and holds the distinction of being America's first public botanical garden. Flowers and trees are beautifully organized and kept in quality condition throughout. You can see the colorful arrangements and exotic trees from the 6-acre pond as you glide along the water in a Swan Boat. Additionally, the park houses two of Boston's most iconic statues: Make Way for Ducklings (a bronze sculpture of a duck and her eight ducklings) and a sculpture of George Washington (which shows America's first president riding on a horse).

Visitors looking to relax after sightseeing will enjoy the Boston Public Garden. Parkgoers say you'll find plenty of shade beneath the park's trees, which comes in handy on hot summer days. Plus, you'll likely spot some ducks and geese swimming around the lagoon. And if you have a few dollars, visitors recommend taking a 15-minute ride on a Swan Boat. The large paddle boats cost $4.50 to ride (or $3 for kids ages 2 to 15 and $4 for seniors); travelers with Go Boston Cards ride for free. Swan Boats are usually available between mid-April and Labor Day.

Boston Common Boston Common free

The grounds of Boston Common started as a cow pasture in the mid-1600s. It was also used for Puritan punishments, like whipping, and even for hangings. In 1768, the area was transformed into a British camp. After the Revolutionary War, the park became a popular locale for public speeches and rallies. Now, the Common is best known because of its status as the oldest public park in the country. You'll also find a variety of activities and events – including theater and musical performances and free fitness classes – hosted here throughout the year. If you plan to traverse the Freedom Trail , you'll start the walk here at Boston Common.

Though some visitors say you won't find much to do in this park, Boston Common is great for picnics or a leisurely stroll. Travelers also mention that this site is a wonderful spot to take young children. In addition to ample running room on the park's green space, kids can play at the Tadpole Playground or Frog Pond. Frog Pond offers a spray pool during the warmer months and an ice skating rink in the winter. Some visitors do note that the park tends to draw Boston's homeless population, particularly at night.

Freedom Trail Freedom Trail free

Stretching 2½ miles, the Freedom Trail weaves past 16 of the city's most historic sites, including Faneuil Hall Marketplace , the Paul Revere House and Old North Church . Taking in all of the trail's attractions requires at least half a day (and some comfortable walking shoes), but you can easily plot points of interest before you begin your jaunt from Boston Common .

Though most visitors agree the trail is easy to navigate on your own, some recommend a guided tour or downloading an app to tell you about the sites. (You'll find a handful of apps available for Apple and Android devices.) If you have a Go Boston Card, standard guided tours given by the Freedom Trail Foundation are covered by your pass.

Faneuil Hall Marketplace and Quincy Market Faneuil Hall Marketplace and Quincy Market free

U.S. News Insider Tip: Every Friday and Saturday, Haymarket (one America's oldest open-air markets) pops up adjacent to Faneuil Hall. In order to navigate this often-chaotic scene successfully make sure to bring small bills, leave bulky bags at the hotel and keep it moving on the sidewalk. - Jill LeGrow

Four buildings – Faneuil Hall, Quincy Market, North Market and South Market – constitute Faneuil Hall Marketplace, with the oldest being Faneuil Hall. Built in 1742 and now a stop on the Freedom Trail , Faneuil Hall has had a long and important history in Massachusetts politics. Samuel Adams once stood here to push for resistance against the British, and abolitionists and suffragists have stood on their soapboxes here. In fact, this is where colonists famously challenged the Stamp Act of 1764 by proclaiming, "no taxation without representation." From those illustrious days, the marketplace has expanded to include more than 100 shops and restaurants.

Gaze up at the six 54-foot glass towers that comprise the New England Holocaust Memorial, and you're bound to be awestruck. Dedicated in 1995, each haunting tower is etched with numbers. The 6 million numbers represent the Holocaust's victims, while the towers represent the six major death camps. There is also a granite path covered in quotes from survivors that leads visitors inside the towers.

Recent visitors described walking through the columns as an emotionally charged and unforgettable experience. The monument's location next to Faneuil Hall Marketplace makes it very accessible while walking the Freedom Trail .

Paul Revere House Paul Revere House

For a glimpse of what life was like in the late 1700s, head to Paul Revere's former residence in the North End . The house, which is situated on the Freedom Trail , offers insight into how homes looked in Revere's time (it's even filled with period pieces, including fine silver). Inside, history fans can admire the building's sweeping beams, spacious fireplaces and some original furnishings owned by the Revere family.

If you like American history, travelers say you'll enjoy seeing the Paul Revere House. This house is small, though, so don't allot more than an hour to tour the property. Docents are friendly and knowledgeable.

Old North Church Old North Church

Most people who know anything about American history have heard of Paul Revere's famous midnight ride, when he rode through town to warn people about the arrival of British troops. Before heading off to Lexington, Revere gave orders at Old North Church. Robert Newman – the church's sexton – and Captain John Pulling Jr. – the church's vestryman – then climbed the steeple and held two lanterns as a signal that the British were indeed coming, but by sea.

The church itself, which is officially named Christ Church, is filled with beautiful relics from the past, including North America's oldest set of change ringing bells and chandeliers brought in from England in the early 1700s. The pews have a long history as well; Pew No. 54 was reserved for Paul Revere's son.

Where to Stay

1 day travel

Move over Rick Steves, the local experts of Barcelona Life share our top tips on how to spend one perfect day in the “The Great Enchantress”.

So you’re coming to the most beautiful city in the world… and you’ve only given yourself 24 hours to see it!?

Are you crazy!?!?

Change your flights amigos , tell your boss your favourite uncle died, or that you’ve contracted dysentery… do whatever it takes to spend longer! There are so many amazing things to do in Barcelona, that one day is never enough…. just check our 2 , 3, 4 and 5 day itineraries (all coming soon!), to see what I mean.

I’m going to attempt the impossible, and create an itinerary that captures the brilliance of Barcelona in less than 24 hours

Didn’t manage to persuade you to stay longer? Well it’s true that the real world can be brutal sometimes, with its responsibilities, and deadlines… so I’m going to attempt the impossible, and create an itinerary that captures the brilliance of Barcelona in less than 24 hours…

The Perfect 1 Day Itinerary

The key to a successful one day stay, in my opinion, is to get an overview of the city, and to visit two or three of its most important monuments. Unfortunately you won’t have the luxury to get a deeper sense of the rhythms of the city, its local life and habits, but you should get an impression on a grander scale of its geography and architecture, and maybe just a tiny slice of its balmy Bohemian atmosphere. Hopefully the seed will be sown for a second, more comprehensive visit. Here we go…

08:45 – Plaça Catalunya We start in Barcelona’s central square.

08:45-09:15 – Passeig de Gracia Take a walk up Passeig de Gracia boulevard to see the Block of Discord, including Gaudi’s Casa Batllo.

09:30 – Casa Mila Enjoy a look at Gaudi’s Casa Mila from the outside, before hopping on the tourist bus (Blue Line, one stop) to the nearby Sagrada Familia.

10:00 – La Sagrada Familia Visit Gaudi’s mindblowing masterpiece. Buy a fast track ticket , or invest in the Barcelona Pass .

11:30 – Tourist Bus Hop back on the Blue Line of the tourist bus. It’s two stops to Park Guell.

12:00 – Park Guell Enjoy views over the city from the Gaudi’s gorgeous gardens – Park Guell (it’s essential to buy advance tickets ! The park is also included in the Barcelona Pass ).

13:30 – Lunch in Gracia Take a pitstop in the Gracia district.

15:00 – Ride the Blue Line Enjoy a longer ride on the Blue Line of the tourist bus, possibly stopping off for a stadium tour of Camp Nou (you should reserve tickets here ).

16:30 – Ride the Red Line Switch onto the Red Line of the tourist bus, and enjoy a scenic ride over the attraction-laden Montjuic mountain.

18:00 – Las Ramblas Get off the bus at the 60-metre-high Colombus Statue and walk up the legendary Las Ramblas.

19:45 – Flamenco Concert & Dinner Enjoy the sultry Spanish dance with dinner. Research the best shows here .

22:00 – Nightcap Enjoy a cocktail at one of Barcelona’s famous bars .

00:00 – Bedtime Or is it?

THE BARCELONA PASS

If you decide to follow this itinerary, then consider purchasing the Barcelona Pass via Tiqets.com . The Barcelona Pass is designed with first time visitors in mind, and includes tickets to 1. La Sagrada Familia , 2. Park Guell and 3. the Hop on / Hop off Tourist Bus , as well as free audio guides.

1 Day Itinerary in Detail

08:45 – plaça catalunya.

No slouching, I expect you to be showered, dressed and breakfasted by now, and you should have made your way to Plaça Catalunya, the city’s bustling central square.

1 day travel

The day starts here, at Placa Catalunya….

08:45 – 09:15 – Passeig de Gracia

From here make your way up the magnificent boulevard Passeig de Gracia by foot. This has to be one of the best looking streets in the world. Keep going up until you reach the so called ‘Block of Discord’ on your left, a single block that showcases three of Barcelona’s best architects in one: starting with the Casa Lleo i Morera by Luis Domenech i Montaner, then the Casa Amatller by Puig y Cadalfach, and finishing with the astonishing Casa Batllo , by none other than Antoni Gaudi.

1 day travel

The Casa Amatller (left), and the Casa Batllo, on the Block of Discord.

09:30 – Casa Mila

The embarrassment of architectural riches continues on the other side of the street with Gaudi’s Casa Mila , a vast monolithic mansion with curves like Kim Kardashian. Take a good look!

The curvaceous Casa Mila

You don’t have time to enter any of these astonishing buildings however, because you’ve got a date with God. Get on board the Blue Line of the Hop On, Hop Off Tourist Bus and alight at the next stop.

10:00 – Sagrada Familia

You don’t have to be religious to sense the divine in this breathtaking homage to the big guy upstairs. Gaudi was an ardent Catholic and he dedicated the later years of his life to this impossibly grandiose edifice, every square foot of which is decorated in religious allegories, natural motifs and mathematical equations. This one you can’t miss, so buy yourself a skip-the-line ticket . Personally I would advise buying a ticket that includes audioguide, which you can do via Get Your Guide .

Note: if you’re following this itinerary exactly, you might be better off buying the Barcelona Pass as it includes Tourist Bus, Sagrada Familia and Park Guell, leaving you done and dusted with one handy purchase!

1 day travel

The unmissable Sagrada Familia

11:30 – Tourist Bus

However mesmerising La Sagrada proves, don’t tarry too long… you need to hustle and get back on the Blue Line of the tourist bus. Your love affair with Gaudi ain’t over yet. Get off two stops later…

12:00 – Park Guell

Excuse me for a minute whilst I get nostalgic for the times when Parc Guell was free and half empty, and I used to pop up there just to enjoy the serene beauty of the place. Sadly, in these days of readily accessible travel, we now have to wait our turn (and pay!) for such privileges – so please go online and book your tickets in advance (you’ve got a loooonng wait if you don’t!).

1 day travel

The viewing terraces of the wonderful Park Guell

Once you’ve passed through the art nouveau gates of Gaudi’s garden , you’ll soon see what all the fuss is about. From the majestic white staircase, with techni-colour lizard on guard, to the wide open terrace with undulating trencadis -covered benches and views over almost the entire city, this is a truly special place.

Oh what the hell, take a selfie… everyone else is!

13:30 – Lunch in Gracia

Lunch time! Leave yourself about 15 or 20 minutes and descend from Park Guell down into the chic Bohemian district of Gracia . This used to be a separate village to Barcelona, and indeed the (fiercely Catalan) locals still consider themselves distinct from downtowners. The barri is chock-full of affordable tapas bars and restaurants, so take your pick. You’ll find a few suggestions in our Restaurants section , where you can filter the location for ‘Gracia’.

1 day travel

A spot of lunch in Gracia…

15:00 – Ride the Blue Line

By now your legs are a little weary and your stomach a little bloated. But don’t worry, I’ve scheduled you a nice easy afternoon…

It’s time to get back to the tourist bus stop, and ride the Blue Line all the way, through the pleasant Zona Alta neighbourhoods, to the other side of the city where the legendary Camp Nou football stadium awaits. Depending on whether you’re a sports fan or not, you might want to get off here and enjoy The Barça Immersive experience . You can buy advance tickets via Get Your Guide (note: the stadium itself is closed for refurbishment until Nov 2024, but you can still tour the museum and check out those gleaming trophies).

Note: The 16:00 or 16:30 time slot for the Camp Nou Experience should fit this itinerary (it might take a bit over an hour to get there via tourist bus after lunch, 30-40 mins on the bus, plus the time you need to get from the restaurant to the bus stop and wait for the next bus to arrive).

1 day travel

Sports fans can squeeze in a stadium tour of Camp Nou

Not a big Barça fan? Then just enjoy the bus tour of the city and alight at the Francesc Macia roundabout, where you’re going to change onto the Red Line of the tourist bus route.

16:30 – Ride the Red Line

From Francesc Macia, the Red Line of the tourist bus will take you to Plaça Espanya, where you will spy the eye-catching Las Arenas shopping centre (it was once a bullfighting arena, and it shows!), before taking a very enjoyable ride through the leafy hills of Montjuic mountain .

1 day travel

Enjoy the bus ride over Montjuic hill, with its parks and museums

This green space is full of parkland and cultural treasures, and you might want to alight at any of the Joan Miro Foundation , Olympic Stadium , or Miramar viewing point, if you have time.

With a bit of luck you should reach the Columbus Statue around 18:00. (If you stopped for Camp Nou you’re probably behind schedule, so plan accordingly!).

18:00 – Las Ramblas

The 60-metre-high column with the New World explorer on top is your sign to get off the bus. You’re at the bottom of Las Ramblas, the city’s (in)famous thoroughfare. You wouldn’t want to have to cross this street every day, as its positively jam-packed with tourists, but on the other hand, you wouldn’t want to miss it either. It’s a wide, lively street, flanked by theatres, restaurants and palaces. You can read more here .

1 day travel

Walk up La Rambla, from Colombus back up to Pl. Catalunya

As you head up Las Ramblas, navigate a little bit to the right in order to discover the lively Plaça Reial , possibly my favourite square in the city. You might want to come back here at night for a beer!

1 day travel

Be sure to pop by the Placa Reial

Whilst on the left of Las Ramblas, as you head up, you’ll pass not only La Boqueria food market (pop in and get yourself some freshly squeezed juice) but also the historic Liceu Theatre .

You’ll also pass all manner of artists, street performers, vendors, hawkers, florists, kiosks and souvenir sellers.

If it’s cold outside you could nip down to Petrixol street (on the right) and grab a hot chocolate from one of the traditional cafes there.

After that it’s time to get back to your hotel and get changed for the evening.

19:45 – Flamenco & Dinner

If you really want to do it all in one day, then round off your Barcelona itinerary with a flamenco show and dinner. There are several great tablaos (concert venues) to choose from, and I’d suggest either this affordable flamenco & tapas evening , or else a show at Tablao Cordobes on Las Ramblas.

Tablao Cordobes offers three or four shows a night, and you can buy a ticket with a drink, with Spanish tapas or will full Spanish dinner, so check what times and options work for you. Shows tend to sell out so best to buy tickets via Get Your Guide (select the date first, and then you will see the different meal options and times).

1 day travel

Round off your Barcelona experience with a flamenco show…

If flamenco isn’t your bag baby, then you can’t go wrong with dinner at El Nacional , a refined food court where four different restaurants and four more bars offer tastes from all corners of Spain.

More things to do at night here .

22:00 – Nightcap

You’ve really packed it in today, so reward yourself with a nice refreshing libation. For cocktails try Slow cocktail bar or La Whiskeria .

If you find yourself in the Gothic Quarter, then head over to Milk , or one of the bars on Plaça Reial (I like Ocaña the best).

1 day travel

Chilling out in style at Slow

00:00 – Bed Time?

Bed time! Unless of course you truly want to make this a 24 hours in Barcelona experience and party until dawn with the city’s cool cats and night owls. In that case let me present to you our guide to the local nightlife .

1 Day Itinerary – The Remix

If you don’t fancy riding the tourist bus, or want to save yourself €33, you could grab the metro (or even walk, it’s not that far) to Sagrada Familia from Casa Mila, and then later take the metro from Sagrada Familia to get to Park Guell.

Afterwards you could metro back into town and do Las Ramblas and the Gothic Quarter at a leisurely pace, as well as wander around El Born .

1 day travel

Barcelona’s Gothic Cathedral in the Old Town

Highlights in these zones are not only the aforementioned Plaça Reial and Boqueria market, but also the Gothic Cathedral , the Passeig del Born and the Picasso Museum .

This would probably give you more control, and time to get ready, if you have booked flamenco tickets in the evening.

1 Day Itinerary – Tour Options

If you want someone else to do all your thinking and planning for you, this half-day Barcelona highlights tour does an excellent job. It follows a similar route to the one I mapped out (great minds!), starting with a guided tour of La Sagrada Familia, and then a jaunt around Montjuic and the Olympic Stadium, before a walking tour of the Gothic Quarter. The tour is reasonable priced and includes hotel pick up.

1 day travel

An ebike tour allows you to see a lot of sights in a short time!

Or else consider an electric bike tour , as these power-assisted bikes can cover a lot of ground with little effort. The Barcelona Photo Highlights Tour by Oceans Bikes covers all of the city’s greatest sights and ensures you’ll come home with plenty of stunning selfies and panoramas.

If you plan on using this itinerary, your best bet is to book a hotel near Plaça Catalunya, where this schedule starts and ends. The 4-star Iberostar Selection is right on the square itself, while close by I also like Hotel Jazz .

Mandarin Oriental Hotel

If money is no object, make it the Mandarin…

If money is no object, the 5-star Mandarin Oriental is a little way up the Passeig de Gracia (giving you a headstart on my itinerary!). They have a fantastic cocktail bar on site.

For a comprehensive guide on where to stay in Barcelona check One Week In travel guide .

Getting to the Airport

You can find our complete guide to getting to and from the airport here . The most convenient way to get into town would be to book a transfer through Welcome Pickup .

Final Advice

I tried to leave as much time as might be needed to get from a. to b. during this itinerary, but if you are buying tickets with specific entry times be sure to leave some extra wiggle room. If you are travelling with children, stop for excessive amount of selfies, enjoy long lunches or get unlucky with the buses / traffic, you may hit some of these stops later than I predicted here.

Also, as ever with Barcelona, be vigilant about pickpockets, especially on the metro, Las Ramblas, and in the winding streets of the Old Town (Gothic Quarter, El Born etc.). The city is very safe, but unguarded possessions (like bags left under tables) are often swiped by opportunistic thieves.

We will be arriving in Barcelona 12:30 on a Friday and leaving 20:00 Saturday. You information has helped a lot on this 1 day in Barcelona. Do you have a suggested itinerary? Ideally we would be starting the day around 14:00 on Friday and ending around 18:30 Saturday allowing travel time for arrival and departure. Thank you,

1 day travel

If you are confident about flights arriving on time you could start at Sagrada Familia on Friday and then make your way to Passeig de Gracia (Casa Mila and Casa Batllo) then take a long walk down Passeig de Gracia and Las Ramblas to the Old Town. Dinner plus evening walk in Old Town, checking Gothic Cathedral as well.

Saturday you could do Park Guell and then ride tourist bus or take metro to Montjuic and explore the many sights around there.

' src=

We arrive in Barcelona at 12:30pm and leave the next day at 9:00am. What is the best itinerary to do so we can see the main top sites.

I would do Sagrada Familia first, then Park Guell, and then walk around the Old Town (specifically Gothic Quarter) in the evening. You will need advance tickets to SF and PG, so you need to plan your timings well (if you land at 12:30, I wouldn’t book SF until 15:00 at the very earliest to give you some wiggle room to get to hotel and check in etc.).

' src=

thank you for your detailed instructions… appreciate all the information and i can not wait to experience this itinerary! thank you so much

Lights, camera, action! Home to some of the world ’ s most well-known film, fashion and music, Los Angeles is a destination that must be visited – even if just for a day. Whether you want to spend the day on one of Golden State ’ s beautiful beaches or roam around the city’s trendy and gentrified downtown, LA has it all. One day in Los Angeles Itinerary

GUEST POST BY ANGELA STERLEY BLOG: Destination Drifter

What’s the best time to visit Los Angeles?

Store your luggage:  LuggageHero allows you to store your luggage for as long as you want to. If you are there only for a day, or waiting for a check-in, this sounds like a perfect option!

Lucky for Angelenos and   visitors alike, the weather is warm and sunny year-round. The summer months can become overly hot and crowded but autumn and spring create perfect   temperatures and less of a tourist crowd. Winter rarely drops below 55 degrees   Fahrenheit   during the day,   so though it may not be ideal for lounging on the beach it is still comfortable weather for a day of sight-seeing. If you   plan to make a stop at Downtown ’ s LA Live or stroll along the Walk of Fame in Hollywood, it is   recommended to check the award   ceremony scheduled to avoid attraction closures.

What’s good to know about Los Angeles?

Many main attractions such as the Walk of Fame and L.A. Live are not located within   walking distance of   each other. Los Angeles has a metro system between many of the main attractions and ride-share apps such as Uber and Lyft are commonly used throughout the city. Though Los Angeles was a city   built for cars, it is still easy to get around without renting one. Don’t worry about the weather, there is an average of 284 sunny days of the year in the City of Angels so your stay will likely be under the warm California sun.

Venice is a haven for the artists of Southern California and attracts unique visitors from all around the world.   A round-trip ride from Santa Monica with a walk down the Venice   boardwalk will likely take approximately 2 hours.

Venice Beach

After a morning on the coast, hop on the Metro Expo Line in Santa Monica to Downtown LA.

Grab lunch at one of the many incredible downtown restaurants or accompany your meal with a drink at The Upstairs Bar   on the rooftop of the Ace Hotel or at Perch if you are searching for a trendy hang out with city views. Day trips from Los Angeles

LA is definitely a city that has it all, but sometimes it’s good to simply get away from it a little and to spend your day in a less hectic place. Fortunately, there are plenty of options when you’re planning a day trip from Los Angeles, no matter how long you’re staying here. If you want to take a nice break, these are the places you really should visit.

Heading to Solvang means entering a completely different world. The town’s Danish origins are clearly visible on every corner – windmills, houses reminiscent of those in northern parts of Europe, things dedicated to Hans Christian Andersen… the lot! You should definitely stop by one of the many bakeries to try a Danish pastry or two, or check out the farms of ostrich and miniature horses on the town’s outskirts.

Ojai is the perfect place if you want to slow your lifestyle down a bit. Loads of olive and citrus trees are all around it, plus there are some really excellent places where you can grab something to eat. Its main street is home to many excellent antique shops, so if you’re into that kind of thing you’ll be strolling up and down for quite a while. The swimming holes in Sespe Creek are a great way to refresh yourself if the weather is good, and they provide an excellent excuse to enjoy the serene nature of this place even more.

Santa Barbara

Just the trip to Santa Barbara will make your day before you even get to your destination because the route will take along the Pacific Coast and provide some incredible views. But that’s just the beginning of it! Beautiful houses and their surrounding gardens, loads of great shops, excellent food and above all incredible wine and wineries will make sure you always have something to experience. Don’t forget to check out the sandy beaches surrounding this place, either. This is paradise, in every sense of the word.

Want to combine beaches and museums? Then head to San Diego for a visit to its famous Balboa Park where exactly 17 different museums are located. Of course, like so many other places in California, this one also boasts beautiful beaches, but what is particularly nice that many of the things worth seeing are close to the train station. Therefore, if you go on your day trip from Los Angeles by train, you will skip the traffic and arrive at a great location in about two hours. Don’t forget to check out the incredible array of museum ships in the bay.

Extra tips for visiting Los Angeles

– Be aware that if you choose to take a photo with the movie characters walking around on Hollywood Blvd. they will expect you to pay them.

– Downtown LA is located next to Skid Row – which is one of   the United State’s largest homeless populations.   Though it is completely safe to walk around in downtown it is best to stay between Figueroa St. and Los Angeles St. to avoid ending up in a dangerous situation.

– Street vendors and food trucks are a great way to try great LA cuisine for cheap. Most are cash only – come prepared!

– Skip the sightseeing vans in Hollywood. There are so many things to do in Los Angeles and it is not worth it to spend hours driving near   celebrity houses that are often not even placed accurately .

– If you want to blend in with the locals it is best to dress for the seasons . Though the city certainly does not require a winter coat, Angelenos will be wearing cold-weather clothing in autumn and winter no matter the temperature.

Pin for later!

  • Perfect One Day in San Francisco Itinerary for First Timers

Want to make the most of your 24 hours in San Francisco?

You’ve landed at the right spot! In this article, I have curated a concentrated itinerary based on my many trips to this Californian city. Just a step down from full-on living there, I dated an SF local long enough to form a solid lay of the Bay Area land.

While San Francisco itself is not particularly large, the Bay Area is, and the many neighborhoods within SF can prove overwhelming. One day in San Francisco will not be enough time, but you can still see the highlights and get a feel for the city.

So, let me take you on a city tour covering the famous landmarks you can’t miss, including a sunrise at the Golden Gate Bridge and the history of Alcatraz Island. I’ll also include extra recommendations for those with a little more time on their hands, along with travel information to help your trip planning.

Sample One Day in San Francisco Itinerary

So, here’s everything you need for a jam-packed day trip itinerary, all in one scroll.

Travel Tip!  Parking is just abysmal. If you opt for public transportation, be ready for things to take a bit longer, even though they have awesome public transport.
  • Start your day with a  sunrise view at the Golden Gate Bridge
  • Visit the  Palace of Fine Arts and Crissy Field.
  • Walk down  Lombard Street,  the “Crookedest Street in the World.”
  • Take in the  view from Coit Tower.
  • Head to  Fisherman’s Wharf and Pier 39  for a (somewhat overpriced) meal looking out onto the water.
  • Will take a large chunk of time:  Depart for  Alcatraz Island;  take a guided tour of the former prison and its grounds.

Late Afternoon:

  • Arrive back onto the mainland for a  cable car ride to Union Square.
  • Gasp for breath on the hills of  Chinatown and eat Dimsum  or do  tacos in the Missions District.
  • End the day with a nightcap at a rooftop bar with views of the city skyline, the LGBTQ-friendly Castro neighborhood, or a rave at Bill Graham Civic Center.

Recommended hotel options for the night :

  • Luxury: Four Seasons Hotel at Embarcadero (Union Square)
  • Mid-range: Hotel Zephyr (Fisherman’s Wharf)
  • Budget:  Cow Hollow Inn and Suites (Marina District)

Yes, it’s a full day.

Personally, I thought visiting Alcatraz was totally worth it, but if you’d rather stay on the mainland, then you can swap it with Golden Gate Park and Haight-Ashbury Street instead.

Quick Facts to Visiting San Francisco

We’ve all seen pictures of those crazy steep streets in San Francisco. With 43 hills and 220 parks, SF is famous for the Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz Island, bustling Chinatown, and those cool red cable cars.

Coming from the California Gold Rush and through the memories of the Summer of Love, this city is now a thriving hub for innovation. The city attracts lots of tech bros, hipsters, and a wonderfully diverse international crowd.

What to Do in San Francisco in One Day

Sunrise at the golden gate bridge.

Wake up early, like real early. I mean the ‘get ready to catch the sunrise’ kind of early. You’ll want to watch as this iconic bridge lights up with hues of orange and pink and pray that the fog is at bay.

Located at the mouth of San Francisco Bay, the bridge is open 24/7, and the most popular spots include Battery Spencer (for a front-and-center view), Crissy Field (if you fancy a morning jog with a view), and Fort Point (for a unique, underneath-the-bridge perspective).

You can also walk or cycle across the bridge, but it does stretch for a whopping 1.7 miles.

Not everyone may be into waking up for the sunrise, but here are a couple of perks: free parking until 8 am, and if you come later, it can get very crowded.

Pro Tip : The weather here can be quite unpredictable, often chilly and foggy, even in the middle of summer.

The Palace of Fine Arts

After watching the sunrise at the Golden Gate Bridge, head over to the Palace of Fine Arts. This stunning architecture was built in 1915 and survived two major earthquakes.

Once you enter its rotunda, be ready to be blown away by the grandeur of its Roman-style dome and intricate sculptural details.

The nearby residential buildings are some of the most expensive in SF, so take a walk around to see how the other half lives.

Crissy Field

From there, walk along Crissy Field, a former airfield transformed into a park with views of the bridge and the bay. It’s an excellent spot for a leisurely morning stroll or a cycle ride along the beach.

Side Trip:  I once went to House of Air, a trampoline park on the west end of Crissy Field. They’ve got different sections, like a room full of trampolines, a trampoline dodgeball area, and parkour obstacles. It was so much fun!

Lombard Street

Next up, drive 10 minutes or walk for 40 minutes to the one and only Lombard Street, known far and wide as the “Crookedest Street in the World.” This quirky street is a part of many classic SF postcards. Its eight sharp turns are set against a steep hillside, flanked by beautiful Victorian mansions and blooming hydrangeas.

Located between Hyde and Leavenworth Streets, this block is often swarmed with tourists taking pictures and cars slowly driving down.

Since 2020 , you need to pay and make reservations to drive down this one-way street. But you can always walk it up for free. Climb up the stairs on either side of the street for an even better vista, especially when it’s clear, and you can see Coit Tower and the Transamerica Pyramid.

Walk through the North Beach neighborhood to Coit Tower, a 210-foot landmark on Telegraph Hill, to some of the city’s best panoramic views and beyond. Built in 1933 at the bequest of Lillie Hitchcock Coit to beautify the city she loved, the tower is also a tribute to the city’s firefighters.

Inside the tower, admire the beautiful murals painted during the Great Depression, depicting various aspects of life in California during the 1930s.

To reach the top of the tower, you can either brave the stairs or take a two-minute elevator ride (there is a  small fee  for both options). Once you’re up there, you get 360-degree views of the city’s skyline, the Golden Gate Bridge, and Alcatraz Island.

Pro Tip : The area around the tower is a residential neighborhood with very limited parking. Also, make sure to spot the  wild parrots of Telegraph Hill , a flock of colorful and noisy birds that have made the area their home!

Afternoon: Alcatraz Island

Fisherman’s wharf and pier 39.

By now, you must be getting hungry. Head to Fisherman’s Wharf and Pier 39 for some delicious clam chowder in a sourdough bread bowl, freshly shucked oysters, or crab from the many seafood vendors.

Walk along the pier to see cute sea lions basking in the sun and enjoy street performers while you work towards Pier 33 to catch your ferry to Alcatraz Island.

Alcatraz Island

This infamous island was once home to a federal prison and housed notorious inmates like Al Capone and George “Machine Gun” Kelly. The prison has been closed since 1963, and the island is now part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area.

Note!  Adding this attraction will take a large part of your San Francisco day trip itinerary.

To get to Alcatraz, you’ll need to take a ferry ride from Pier 33. Alcatraz Cruises is the official ferry provider, and it’s a good idea to book your tickets in advance  here  because they sell out quickly, especially in the summer. The short journey on the Pacific Ocean passes bay views, the Golden Gate Bridge, and the city skyline.

The audio tour of the prison (included with your ferry ticket) is highly recommended. You’ll get a glimpse into the lives of prisoners, and it takes you through the eerie cells and hallways while sharing chilling tales about the prison’s most infamous inmates.

The narration is exceptionally well done, with stories from ex-prisoners and guards but also of the Native American occupation.

Alcatraz Island also has a dark, mysterious beauty outside the prison. You can wander around the prison’s exterior and the island’s gardens.

Planning Tip!  The tour can take anywhere from 2.5 to 3 hours, not including the 15-20 minute ferry ride.

Book your Alcatraz tickets in advance, as they sell out quickly. You can check availability  here  and purchase them directly from their website.

Evening: Chinatown or Mission District

After returning from Alcatraz Island, I’d pick between these two neighborhoods to end your day trip to San Francisco. And I would entirely base this on food preference, Mexican or Chinese fare.

The largest Chinatown outside of Asia, San Francisco, is bursting with color and culture. The entrance at Grant Avenue and Bush Street is marked by the Dragon Gate, an Instagram-worthy spot.

Walking down Grant Avenue, you’ll find endless antique shops, dim sum restaurants, and traditional Chinese pharmacies. Don’t miss Portsmouth Square, where locals practice Tai Chi and play mahjong.

With the steepest streets, you’ll catch the most amazing views of the red cable cars cruising down the hills in Chinatown in this perfectly organized city grid.

Fun fact:  did you know that the fortune cookie was actually invented here, not in China? You can also take a fortune cookie factory tour and see how they are made!

Mission District

A district with a strong Latino influence, Mission District has become one of the trendiest areas in San Francisco. Its streets are lined with colorful murals, taquerias, and trendy cafes.

Valencia Street is packed with boutiques and home decor stores, while 24th Street features many specialty shops for spices, herbs, and sweet treats. Dolores Park is a hub for youth on the rare sunny summer days.

Finally, Balmy Alley and Clarion Alley have some of the best murals in San Francisco. From political statements to abstract pieces, these alleys are constantly changing, so even if you’ve been before, it’s worth stopping by again.

Here, you can find the best burritos in the city at taquerias like La Taqueria or El Farolito. If you’re a fan of baked goods, Tartine Bakery is known for its mouth-watering pastries and fresh sourdough bread.

Safety Tip!  At night, it’s definitely not the safest area.

San Francisco Nightlife

Honestly, this is what I did the most while in this city. There are just so many options, and where you decide to go really depends on the kind of nightlife you’re into.

As a techno lover, famous DJs always play, from big venues like Bill Graham to more club-like experiences like Halcyon, Temple, and Audio.

You can go club-hopping the eclectic Mission Street for salsa clubs, DJs, and tons of dive bars. The Castro is also full of life at night if you’re looking for a gay-friendly experience.

There are also plenty of rooftop bars with views and an abundance of live music from jazz to hip-hop.

Places to Visit with Extra Time

Other places around san francisco.

  • Golden Gate Park:  This sprawling park spans over 1,000 acres and features numerous attractions, including the Japanese Tea Garden, the Conservatory of Flowers, the De Young Museum, and the California Academy of Sciences. You need a half day just for this park!
  • Haight-Ashbury : Known for its link to 1960s counterculture, today this area is filled with boutiques, vintage clothing shops, eclectic eateries, and the constant stench of weed.
  • Muir Woods National Monument : Just outside San Francisco, this forest is home to towering, ancient redwood trees.
  • Sausalito : This beautiful town across the Golden Gate Bridge is known for its waterfront views, charming boutiques, and gourmet dining.
  • The Painted Ladies : A famous row of Victorian houses, a great photo opportunity with the San Francisco skyline in the background.
  • The Exploratorium : This hands-on science museum is immersive and fun for all ages. It’s located on Pier 15, just a short walk from the Ferry Building.
  • Land’s End:  A scenic hiking trail that takes you along the coast and to some of the best views of Golden Gate Bridge.
  • San Francisco Museum of Modern Art ( SFMFO ): This museum has diverse collections of modern and contemporary art, including works by renowned artists such as Andy Warhol and Frida Kahlo.
  • Twin Peaks : A popular spot for tourists to get panoramic views of the city. On a clear day, you can see all the way to Oakland!

Day Trips from San Francisco

  • Napa Valley and Sonoma:  Less than two hours away, these world-renowned wine regions are a scenic escape from the city. Explore wineries, enjoy tastings, and take in the beautiful countryside.
  • Silicon Valley:  Visit the headquarters of some of the biggest names in tech, such as Google, Apple, and Facebook. You can also explore the Computer History Museum and learn about the evolution of technology.
  • Big Sur and Carmel-by-the-Sea : Drive along the Pacific Coast Highway to see some of California’s most beautiful coastal landscapes, including the famous Bixby Creek Bridge.
  • Yosemite National Park : Enjoy hiking trails, waterfalls, and breathtaking vistas of one of California’s most famous landmarks.
  • Santa Cruz : A coastal town famous for its beach boardwalk and surf culture. Visit the Santa Cruz Surfing Museum or take a stroll along Pacific Avenue.
  • Sacramento : The capital city of California, it’s packed with historical sites like Old Sacramento, the California State Capitol Museum, and the Sutter’s Fort State Historic Park.
  • Big Basin Redwoods State Park : California’s oldest state park, home to ancient redwoods, beautiful waterfalls, and diverse wildlife.

Where to Stay in San Francisco

For first-time visitors to San Francisco, Nob Hill and Union Square are highly recommended for their proximity to major attractions. Meanwhile, neighborhoods like Marina District, Fisherman’s Wharf, and Hayes Valley are also considered safe and deliver a mix of shopping, dining, and residential experiences.

Safety Tip!  It’s no secret that San Francisco has a homelessness and increasing crime problem. While the city is still generally safe, I would avoid the Tenderloin district, SoMa (South of Market Street), and parts of Chinatown, especially late at night, due to higher incidences of street crime.

Best Hotels in San Francisco

Is 1 day enough for san francisco.

San Francisco has a lot going on, and it would be tough to fully explore it in a single day. I recommend planning for at least three days. This doesn’t even include the time to see the entirety of the Bay Area.

San Francisco is a city full of neighborhoods, each with its own unique character. Trying to explore them all with such little time won’t do them justice. If you’re short on time, prioritize the must-see sights and think about hopping on a bus tour or city tour to cover more ground.

Best Time To Visit

San Francisco is famous for its cool, foggy weather and microclimates, but it’s a great place to visit any time of the year. The city has so many microclimates that it can be super foggy here while being completely sunny across the Bay Bridge in nearby Oakland!

That said, most people find the best time to visit is during September and October when temperatures are warmest and there’s less fog. If you are okay with slightly cooler weather, spring (March-May) can be a good time to go to San Francisco without the high tourist crowds.

Contrary to popular belief, summer (June to August) is not the hottest season. The weather is cool, often draped in fog (known as the famous “Karl the Fog”). This is, however, the peak tourist season, so expect more crowds, especially at popular attractions.

Getting to San Francisco

San Francisco is possibly one of the most accessible cities in America. The city itself has an efficient public transportation system, including the historic cable cars, buses, and the BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) metro system.

The city is served by three major airports. The San Francisco International Airport (SFO) is the largest and closest to the city, with direct flights from most major cities around the world. Oakland International Airport (OAK) and the San Jose International Airport (SJC) are also viable options and are well-connected with domestic flights.

By Public Transportation

Amtrak runs a network of train routes linking San Francisco with cities nationwide. The California Zephyr route, for instance, has scenic rides between Chicago and San Francisco.

Numerous bus companies, including Greyhound and Megabus, operate regular services to and from San Francisco’s main bus terminal, the San Francisco Transbay Terminal.

San Francisco is well-connected by a network of highways for those who prefer to take a road trip. If you’re coming from the south, you’ll most likely take the US-101 N, the beautiful coastal route that starts from Los Angeles. The I-5 S is the most direct route from the north, and the I-80 W is your best option from the east.

The Port of San Francisco welcomes domestic ferries from nearby cities like Oakland and Vallejo and international cruise ships.

Final Thoughts: Day Trip to San Francisco

While San Francisco has its fair share of problems and may not be my top pick to live, I think it’s an iconic city that tourists, both domestic and international, should add to their USA trip plans. This is especially true if you love going out.

What to know for booking summer travel: Expert tips on airfare, destinations and more

VIDEO: Where you can score summer travel bargains

As the surge of summer travel draws near, the race to book a great vacation is on.

"If you're looking to travel domestically within the U.S., I think you should be booking now for summer travel," Clint Henderson, travel expert and managing editor of The Points Guy, told "GMA."

Earlier this month while reporting quarterly earnings, Delta Airlines CEO Ed Bastian projected "record advance bookings for the summer," telling CNBC that the carrier's credit card data and bookings show customers are highly interested in air travel.

An increase in budget airline routes that has created more competition, paired with an easing of the post-pandemic revenge travel surge, means travelers could see more deals.

"Overall prices are down from where they were when we just had that boom out of the pandemic," Henderson said. "So things are more reasonable."

Hopper, the flight booking app, has shown predicted fares for flights to Europe will be down 10% in price from the same time last year.

Google recently announced its top 20 trending summer destinations , which saw a few newcomers on the list and Paris rose to the No. 2 spot.

With the Olympics taking place there from July 26 through Aug. 11, an uptick in airfare and hotel pricing is expected during the Games.

But those willing to wait out the Olympics could find big savings for flights to the host nation.

The Points Guy has featured deals from Atlanta, Dallas and Charlotte to Paris for as low as $515 from August through the fall.

Amsterdam, Prague, Spain and Iceland are among the most reasonably priced European destinations, as seen on Hopper.

Tips for booking summer travel

Don't forget to stay flexible with travel dates and keep midweek in mind for possibly lower fares.

There's also a time during the post-summer rush known as "shoulder season," between September and October, when fares could drop by as much as 30%.

When it comes to airfare purchase timing, the experts at The Points Guy have found prices dip eight to four weeks before the outbound flight, but after the one-month mark, prices will creep back up.

Spirit's Latest Sale Has Flights Across the U.S. Starting at $49 — but You'll Have to Book Fast

The airline's sale, which ends on Tuesday, is in celebration of Earth Day.

Spirit Airlines is celebrating Earth Day with a sale that has one-way flights starting at just $49.

The deal , which ends at 11:59 p.m. ET on April 23, is available for travel on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays from April 30 to June 19 and then again from Aug. 6 to Oct.16, Spirit shared with Travel + Leisure . The sale is not available during several blackout dates, including May 28, May 29, Sept. 3, and Sept. 4.

“The opportunity to travel and explore nature is impactful and helps us better appreciate our planet,” Lania Rittenhouse, the vice president of guest experience, brand and communications at Spirit Airlines, said in a statement shared with T+L. "We hope this offer makes it easier for our Guests to discover a new national park or beach this summer with family and friends.”

Fly between Atlantic City and West Palm Beach, between Atlanta and Baltimore, between Nashville and Boston, between Charlotte and Dallas, between Newark and Pittsburgh, and more starting at just $49 each way. On the West Coast, travelers can fly between Los Angeles and San Antonio, Salt Lake City, Las Vegas, and more also starting at just $49, or splurge and fly from the City of Angels to New Orleans starting at just $77 one-way.

Travelers can also fly cross-country for less with travel between Miami and Chicago starting at just $69 each way and travel between Philadelphia and Los Angeles starting at just $81 each way.

The sale comes as Spirit Airlines plans to launch new routes to popular destinations like Boston, Portland, Ore., and Salt Lake City in time for summer.

The ultra-low cost airline offers bare-bones tickets and charges for extras like baggage and seat selection. However, travelers who belong to the airline’s paid yearly membership program, the Saver$ Club, receive discounts on those extras.

Travelers who miss the sale can still save big by booking their tickets in person at the airport . That’s because Spirit waives its passenger usage fee for customers who book in person, which generally saves travelers around $23 per ticket each way.

One Day in a City

24 Hour Travel Itineraries to Make the Most of a Day in a Destination

One Day in Taipei Itinerary

November 30, 2020 By Gina Posts on this site may contain affiliate links. Read the full disclosure here .

A 1-Day Itinerary for the Perfect 24 Hours in Taipei, Taiwan

Spending one day in Taipei can still give you a good taste of this beautiful city in Taiwan.

Taipei, the capital of Taiwan, is undoubtedly one of Asia’s most dynamic destinations. Spending just one day in Taipei is certain to provide you with a tantalizing sample of life in this global city and incredible country. A heady mix of the modern and traditional combined with a unique local cuisine will leave you wanting more.

This One Day in Taipei itinerary will help you make the most of your time in the city so you can see the top attractions and taste the best cuisine even if you have less than 24 hours to do so.

Getting Around Taipei

Taipei offers both a modern metro system (MRT) and extensive bus network to help you reach all the main attractions.

However, for those with just one day in Taipei the MRT is the quickest and therefore best option. Each attraction highlighted below in this Taipei itinerary will have details on how to get there via the MRT.

MRT Platform in Taipei

Opened in 1996 and with a number of extensions over subsequent years, Taipei’s MRT system must be one of the world’s most modern and cleanest networks.

With areas clearly marked on each platform in which to queue it must also be one of the world’s most polite. No need for constant requests to allow people off the train first here! And with announcements in English as well as Mandarin you will be able to understand such requests.

Comprising 131 stations over six separate lines and open from 6 a.m. to midnight seven days a week, Taipei MRT provides visitors with ample opportunity to reach all parts of Taipei and its suburbs.

Taipei MRT Cost

With just one day in Taipei and a number of destinations to reach the only ticket option to plump for has to be the 24 hour pass. Providing unlimited travel across the network for NT$180 equivalent to around £5.00 or $6.00 this is fabulous value for money.

Now for our itinerary that will give you a cultural and fun day in Taipei!

Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall

Chiang Kai-Shek Memorial Hall is a must-see site even if short on time and you only have one day in Taipei.

The best way to start your one day in Taipei is to head to Chiang Kai-Shek Memorial Hall, Taiwan’s most significant national landmark.

Dedicated to and named after Taiwan’s first President, this impressive monument is situated in the south of the city. With its own MRT Station on both the green Songshan-Xindian and red Tamsui-Xinyi lines, it is easily accessible from across Taipei.

View From Chiang Kai-Shek Memorial Hall in Taipei

Upon leaving the station, head first to the grand main gate, which is a fitting entrance to Liberty Square and the Memorial Hall itself.

Reached via two flights of 89 steps representing the age of Chiang Kai-Shek at the time of his death, the bright white Memorial Hall stands prominently against the blue sky beyond. The octagonal blue roof, a design similar to the modern Taipei 101 skyscraper (covered below), uses the symbolism of the number eight, a number in Chinese culture that is associated with good fortune.

Changing of the Guard

Before you leave the splendor of Chiang Kai-Shek Memorial Hall you must see the unique Changing of the Guard ceremony. Held in the hall in front of the imposing statue of Chiang Kai-Shek himself, this ceremony takes place on the hour from midday to 5 p.m. each day.

Unlike its more famous London cousin, this Taiwanese version of the Changing of the Guard involves a lot more drama and theatrics. Two more guards bedecked in fine white uniforms enter the Hall accompanied by a senior officer. They don’t just walk or march though. Their leg and arm movements are very definite and abbreviated, a staccato display more akin to elaborate dance moves.

Taipei 101 seen from the ground. Taipei should be a must-see item on every Taipei itinerary.

The next stop on your One Day in Taipei itinerary takes you from the grandeur of the Chiang-Shek Memorial Hall to a modern and world famous landmark: Taipei 101.

To get to Taipei 101, return to the MRT station and on the red line head west toward Xiangshan alighting at Taipei 101/World Trade Centre.

Taipei 101 was completed in 2004 and is one of the world’s tallest building with arguably the most beautiful skyscraper design. It has a blue-green facade rather than the more standard glass finish and a design echoing influences of Chinese culture.

Taipei 101 Observatory Deck

Taipei 101’s observatory deck situated between the 88th and 91st floors and is 382 meters high. It is the city’s most visited attraction.

Do what you can to time your one day in Taipei with a clear sunny day to enjoy the 360˚ panoramic views across the city to their fullest.

Taipei 101 Mass Damper

Taipei 101 Mass Damper

In a country such as Taiwan, any skyscraper design must withstand the power of earthquakes and typhoons. This is where the mass damper enters the fold.

This 5.5m wide, 660 tonne weight is suspended internally and is a popular attraction in its own right. It even has not just one but four mascots of its own.

The damper is incorporated within Taipei 101 to allow it to sway and move in accordance with the wind or ground tremors. In 2002 Taipei was hit by an earthquake with a magnitude of 6.8 and in 2015 a typhoon caused a one meter sway in the damper. Incredibly Taipei 101 suffered no damage after either incident.

Din Tai Fung Dumpling Restaurant

Dumplings at Din Tai Fung Restaurant in Taipei

After experiencing two distinctly different Taipei attractions it is most definitely time for lunch.

Return to the ground floor of Taipei 101 and the four floor shopping center at its base. While the food court contains numerous fast food restaurants don’t consider anything other than the Din Tai Fung Restaurant.

Now boasting branches in countries across the world, Din Tai Fung is generally considered to be one of the world’s best restaurants.

Its most famous dish and Taiwan’s most popular is Beef Noodles Soup. Order one of these accompanied with a selection of dim sum and you can’t fail but be impressed. It’s a perfect meal choice to boost your energy levels before moving on to the rest of your one day in Taipei itinerary.

Elephant Mountain View of Taipei 101

View of Taipei from Elephant Mountain

To complete your visit to Taipei 101 you simply must head to Elephant Mountain. From here you’ll obtain the best view of the building itself.

The 15 to 20 minute walk east toward Xiangshan Station and the hiking trail beyond will also help you work off that hearty lunch you had! Which is also good because we’ve got more foodie deliciousness in store for you…

Raohe Street Food Market

Delicacies at Raohe St Market

Taiwan celebrates its cuisine and street food markets perhaps more than any other country in Asia, and Raohe Street Market is Taipei’s most famous.

To get there from Elephant Mountain and the glorious views of Taipei 101, return to the MRT network. Change at Daan on to the brown line and then Nanjing Fuxing on the green line; the journey to Songshan will take around 40 minutes. The entrance to the market is then just meters away.

Running for approximately 250 meters down Raohe Street, the market comprises two rows of stalls all offering a selection of delicious fast foods.

Highlights include fried chicken cutlets, served on the bone with a choice of toppings and some of the tastiest pork sausages you’ll come across anywhere.

Stinky Tofu

Stinky Tofu in Taipei

Amongst the many incredible foods and smells you will inevitably at some juncture be hit full force by the unique aroma of stinky tofu. This pungent odor is unmistakable and is unlikely reminiscent of any food item you’ve eaten before.

Stinky Tofu is one of Taiwan’s most popular ‘delicacies’, but was not a food experience we could bring ourselves to try, but maybe you’ll be more adventurous and want to give it a try!

Ximending is a shopping district where you should spend part of you day in Taipei

After satisfying your appetite at Raohe Street the next and final stop on your one day in Taipei itinerary must be the district of Ximending.

Taipei’s shopping and entertainment district of Ximending is located in the west of the city and is similar to Tokyo’s Shibuya area.

From Songshan MRT Station head west on the green line, alight at Ximen Station and then leave via exit 6.

Ximending is Taipei’s first pedestrianized area, and it is the ideal spot to end your day with numerous shopping opportunities, theaters, concert venues, and bars.

Should you still be hungry or have changed your mind and want to sample some stinky tofu after all, Ximending is also home to Ximen Night Market.

Ximen Night Market

Enjoy Your Day in Taipei

This One Day in Taipei itinerary is certain to tick off all the standard tourist boxes. The tradition and history of the Chiang-Shek Memorial Hall, modernity of Taipei 101, cuisine and local delicacies offered at both Din Tai Fung and the Raohe Street Food Market, and the vibrant, youthful district of Ximending will provide you with the best way to celebrate and look back on a truly fabulous day.

French air traffic controller strike threaten travel chaos at Paris airports

French air traffic controllers are to stage a one-day strike Thursday that risks seeing most flights cancelled at the two main Paris airports, France's leading aviation association warned Tuesday.

Issued on: 23/04/2024 - 19:03

Unions called the strike after a breakdown of negotiations on salary increases and other measures in a planned overhaul of France 's air traffic control system.

The action has raised new concerns over the risk of strikes during the Olympic Games that Paris is due to host from late July, when hundreds of thousands of extra visitors are expected.

The main air traffic union has also warned it could order several days of strike action over a busy May holiday weekend if its demands are not met.

The strike is going to be "very strongly followed", said Pascal de Izaguirre, the head of FNAM, an umbrella group of French aviation industry unions .

He said 75 percent of flights could be cancelled at Paris Orly airport and 65 percent at Charles de Gaulle, the capital's main airport. Regional airports are also set to be badly affected.

"It will have a huge impact," he said.

On top of the cancellations, "major delays" are to be expected, said an official from the air traffic controllers' union, asking not to be named.

The air traffic control reforms aim to improve productivity but unions think the changes should be accompanied by higher salaries.

The main air traffic union, the SNCTA, has also issued notice it could also strike on three days, from Thursday May 9 to Saturday May 11.

This could potentially wreck many people's holiday plans, with May 9 a public holiday and May 10 traditionally used as a "pont" (bridge) to make a long weekend.

In statement, the union condemned the failure of the discussions "in particular on the question of social support" and gave authorities 15 days to "engage in a search for solutions" before it carries out the strike threat.

Taiwan was hit with a magnitude 6.1 earthquake in the early hours of Tuesday local time (2:32 p.m. ET Monday), according to the island's Central Weather Administration.

The earthquake struck about a mile from Shoufeng Township, Hualien County, the USGS said, and is the latest in a series of earthquakes that had been shaking the island since Monday afternoon. There was no tsunami threat, according to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center.

The latest quake shook buildings in the capital, Taipei; an AFP reporter said they could feel their building swaying.

"Glass panels of (the) bathroom and windows were making noises," another AFP staffer said.

Earlier, a 5.5 magnitude earthquake hit just off the coast. Taiwan has been hit by hundreds of aftershocks after a deadly earthquake struck Hualien earlier this month, killing at least 17 people and injuring hundreds.

The 7.2 magnitude quake hit on April 3 and caused landslides around the mountainous region that blocked off roads while buildings in the main Hualien city were badly damaged.

Water cascaded down buildings and swimmers fought for control against sudden waves as a powerful earthquake rocked Taiwan on April 3.

Hualien's fire department earlier said that teams were dispatched to inspect any disaster from the latest earthquake, according to several media outlets .

"We will continue to monitor the situation and report in a timely manner," one media outlet said in a post.

At 10:30 p.m., it added that there were no reports so far of quake damages.

This is a developing story and will be updated as we learn more information.
