Primoz Roglic

Primož Roglič has said that he suffered a lower back fracture in the crash that forced him out of the Tour de France .

Roglič revealed the extent of his injuries in an Instagram post on Tuesday evening and explained that he had been undergoing rehab at the Red Bull performance centre in Austria.

"Life is not the easiest sometimes," he wrote. "Further examinations after the [Tour de France] crash showed a nondisplaced lwk3 fracture of processus transversus in the lower back so last week I was recovering at Red Bull Athlete Performance Center, where they were taking the best care of me...

"I’m slowly getting back on the bike and taking my time to recover and will see where this takes us… In this time I realised, once again, that I have the best fans In the world. Thank you."

The Slovenian was expected to start the Vuelta a España on August 17, but the extent of his injuries will put his participation in doubt.

Roglič crashed on stage 12 of the Tour on the road to Villeneuve-sur-Lot . Despite the efforts of his Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe team-mates, he was unable to rejoin the peloton and lost time. He later abandoned the race after being examined by team doctors.

At the time he pulled out, Roglič was fourth in the general classification, 2:15 down on eventual Tour winner Tadej Pogačar . It had been hoped that he would challenge for overall victory in France.

The Slovenian is a three-time former winner of the Vuelta a España, and reports had suggested that he would take to the start line once more in August. However, Red Bull Bora-Hansgrohe boss Ralph Denk recently said on the Inside Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe podcast that nothing had been confirmed yet.

Cycling Weekly contacted the team on Wednesday to ask about Roglič’s plans for the rest of the season but did not hear back at the time of publication.

"Primož is currently only training a bit on the indoor trainer, I don't think it's clear yet whether he will participate in the Vuelta," Denk said on the podcast.

The Vuelta will start in Lisbon, Portugal on 17 August before concluding in Madrid on 8 September.

Tadej pogacar stuns primoz roglic, set to win tour de france.

  • Nick Zaccardi ,
  • Nick Zaccardi

Tadej Pogacar overtook countryman Primoz Roglic and is set to become the youngest Tour de France champion since 1904, the second-youngest in history and the first Slovenian champion.

Pogacar, who turns 22 on Monday, overcame a 57-second deficit to Roglic and won Saturday’s penultimate stage, a 22-mile time trial with a finishing four-mile climb. He is 59 seconds ahead of Roglic after three weeks and 84 hours of total racing.

“Actually, my dream was just to be [in] the Tour de France,” Pogacar said. “I cannot believe it, and if you ask me in one week, one month, I will still not believe it, probably.”

Pogacar won the stage by 81 seconds, greater than the margin separating second place from eighth place after 55 minutes on the roads. Roglic was fifth.

It’s reminiscent of American Greg LeMond surpassing Frenchman Laurent Fignon in the time trial finale of the 1989 Tour.

That final margin was the closest in Tour history -- eight seconds. This one would be the 11th time in Tour history that the difference is less than a minute, according to ProCyclingStats.com.

“I struggled with everything, just not enough power,” Roglic said. “I was just more and more without the power that I obviously needed. I was just really giving everything till the end.”

Australian Richie Porte will join Pogacar and Roglic on the podium after moving up from fourth place going into the time trial. Colombian Miguel Angel Lopez , who came into the day in third, dropped to sixth.

It’s the first time since 2007 that everybody on the final Tour de France podium will be there for the first time.

TOUR DE FRANCE: Standings | TV, Stream Schedule | Stage By Stage

Sunday’s finale is the traditional ceremonial ride into Paris where the overall leaders don’t attack each other.

Pogacar is riding his first Tour de France and in his second season as a professional cyclist with a World Tour team.

Last September, he finished third in the Vuelta a Espana, one of three Grand Tours, which Roglic won. At the time, Pogacar became the youngest Grand Tour podium finisher since 1974.

“I knew that I can be with the best, that I can follow,” after the Vuelta, Pogacar said, “but I never thought that I would win already this year, especially in this season that was really strange.”

UAE Team Emirates initially planned to use Pogacar to support Fabio Aru , but the Slovenian’s continued emergence changed the plan.

“I’m going [to the Tour] firstly to learn,” Pogacar said in May. “But if I have a chance to show what I can do, I will.”

Pogacar was Robin to Roglic’s Batman for most of this Tour.

Roglic wore the yellow jersey as race leader the last two weeks. heading the dominant Jumbo-Visma team. Pogacar donned the white jersey for the highest-placed rider 25 and under, though he was on a weaker team.

But when they went head-to-head on climbs, Pogacar usually stuck with Roglic, sometimes riding away from him.

When it came down to the final climb on Saturday, with no team support in what they call the race of truth, Pogacar showed who was the strongest Slovenian.

“[Roglic] was really superior through the whole Tour,” Pogacar said. “He must be devastated, but that’s bike racing, I guess. Today I beat him, and that was it.”

Roglic Tour de France redemption in ruins after latest withdrawal

A fter two falls in the previous two days, Primoz Roglic withdrew from the Tour de France before Friday's 13th stage with his bid for the title in tatters ahead of a  pair of daunting mountain stages this weekend.

Slovenian Roglic has won the Vuelta a Espana three times and the Giro d'Italia once, but is best known for losing the Tour de France with a final-day meltdown on a time-trial in 2020.

With another last gasp time-trial programmed in 2024, the 34-year-old was dreaming of redemption.

His team slept on a decision to race him or rest him after his late fall on Thursday.

When their bus pulled up for stage 13 at south-western town Agen on Friday, the mechanics prepared just the six bikes, and Roglic was the missing man.

"The decision has been taken that he will not start today, to focus on upcoming goals," his Red Bull Bora Hansgrohe team said.

"We wish you a speedy recovery Primoz," they added.

- Flowering in Florence -

Roglic entered this year's Tour as one of four leading title contenders. He had left Visma after eight years to move to a team whose new sponsor, Red Bull, signed him to a generous three-year deal.

Hopes had been high after he won the warm-up race, the Criterium du Dauphine, in June.

"I changed team to try and win this Tour de France," said the almost unrecognisable Roglic as he cracked jokes in Florence ahead of the Grand Depart on June 29.

On Thursday, an unlucky Roglic was caught in a tangled mess of bikes and screaming riders after a rival hit a traffic island.

A similar fall forced him out of the 2021 Tour in week one.

Roglic dropped to sixth in the overall standings while his grazed and bloodied shoulder compromised a potentially merciless two days in the Pyrenees.

Before crashing on stage 12's flat ride, Roglic trailed overall leader Tadej Pogacar by 2min 15sec.

At the end of the stage Roglic was 4min 42sec behind his compatriot Pogacar.

"I heard the crash but didn't look round. I was shocked by the bad news," Pogacar said on Thursday.

"I'm really disappointed for him. It really sucks," the 25-year-old added.

Roglic finished fourth on the Tour de France in 2018 and second two years later.

Former ski jumper Roglic has already said he will not defend his Olympic time trial gold medal at this summer's Paris Games.

- Pogacar in pole position -

compatriot Pogacar is searching for a third success after titles in 2020 and 2021 and is vowing to go full gas on Saturday and Sunday.

The relentlessly attack-minded 25-year-old is targeting the first Giro-Tour double since Marco Pantani in 1998.

Double-defending champion Jonas Vingegaard appears to be Pogacar's chief obstacle an is third at 1min 14sec while Belgian Remco Evenepoel is also muddying the waters in second place at 1min 06sec.

Friday's 165.3km stage between Agen and Pau is another flat ride.

The Tour's 21st and final stage finishes in Nice on July 21 with the traditional ending on Paris's Champs-Elysees unavailable due to the Olympics.

The struggle for the overall title is set to go down to the wire with a nasty 34km time-trial on the final stage.

Riders will be exposed to winding roads on the French Riviera coastline between tax haven Monaco and the chic pebble beaches on the Nice seafront.

Roglic: It doesn’t matter which of us wins the Tour de France

Post Dauphiné domination, Slovenian says Jumbo-Visma have multiple Tour options

Primoz Roglic of Slovenia and Team Jumbo Visma celebrates the win at the 2022 Criterium du Dauphine

Primož Roglič winning a week-long stage race is nothing new. In fact, doing so in a team one-two with Jonas Vingegaard is nothing new either, after last year’s Itzulia. But whereas last year there was a clear division between the two, Roglič now has company at the top of the Jumbo-Visma pecking order.

Despite the uncertainty surrounding Roglič’s condition following his knee injury last month, the main takeaway from the   Critérium du Dauphiné isn’t that the Slovenian is well on track for the Tour - that much should have been expected anyway. It’s that he is not the only rider on his team operating at the level required to win the yellow jersey next month.

The spoils were divided up neatly atop the Plateau de Solaison on Sunday: overall victory for Roglič , stage victory for Vingegaard , Tour de France favourite status for both. But there can be only one winner in July.

“Who’s the boss?” came the first question in Roglič’s winner’s press conference from a French newspaper reporter.

'I'm back' says Roglic after taking control of Dauphiné Jumbo-Visma in control but Roglic there to be tested – Critérium du Dauphiné analysis Roglic: I'm definitely not at my best 9 riders to watch at the 2022 Critérium du Dauphiné

"Everyone, huh,” Roglič replied in characteristically laconic fashion. “Everyone can say something, everyone can speak. It’s like that."

Asked to narrow it down to ‘who’s the boss on the bike’, Roglič would not be budged.

“The same. Everyone has their own part. Like today, the guys were incredible. Really big thanks to all of them.”

Roglič has risen to the top of the sport in the colours of Jumbo-Visma and carried the torch as they developed into one of the leading stage racing teams in recent years. He has won the Vuelta a España three times for the team and came agonisingly close to landing the Tour de Franc e in 2020, but he insists it doesn’t have to be him who finishes the job in July.

“The stronger the guys are around me, and the stronger I am myself, then the stronger we are as a team,” he said.

“Definitely at the end I don’t care who is winning or taking it. It’s a team sport. We try to do the best with what we have.”

Roglič heaped praise on his teammates throughout the press conference. After some riders expressed doubts over Jumbo-Visma’s strength earlier in the week, Sunday was an emphatic response.

Christophe Laporte and Chris Harper did the early work, Tiesj Benoot and Wout van Aert chipped in over the Col de la Colombière, and Steven Kruijswijk laid such strong foundations on the final climb that when he pulled off, Roglič and Vingegaard only had one rival for company.

“Super strong team,” Roglič said. “We had everything under control, not just today but the whole week. I’m pleased to be a part of it and we can achieve all these successes.”

As well as placing one-two on the stage and the overall, Jumbo-Visma finished the week with two extra stage wins for Wout van Aert, who took home the green jersey. Perhaps unsurprisingly, they also topped the teams classification.

“I guess we deserve it,” Roglič said. “We showed really nice racing this week. We can be confident going into the Tour. But for sure it’s a different story there. It has to be the same as here - doing the best each and every one.

“We are on the right way. We did a good job, but we can’t be satisfied because there’s still quite some time to go. We try to keep the level or be even better for the Tour.”

As for Vingegaard, and the decision to grant him the stage win: “He super deserves it. He was super strong on the last climb. Each guy of the team did an incredible job. It’s a win for all of us."

Even questions that weren’t about his team were brought back around to the strength of the team. Does this send a message to Tadej Pogačar (UAE Team Emirates)? “We’re just enjoying our work.”

There was, however, time for some of the humour that has increasingly slipped into Roglič's dealings with the media.

He spoke of doing some “small corrections in France this year” referring to his titles here and at Paris-Nice after losing the yellow jersey in both races - and of course at the Tour - in recent years. He also joked that the Tour is ideal preparation for the Vuelta.

Whatever happens next month, Roglič has further bolstered his palmarès which now features a who’s who of week-long stage races: Critérium du Dauphiné, Paris-Nice, Tirreno-Adriatico, Itzulia, the Tour de Romandie.

“It’s crazy,” he said. “Beautiful to achieve it."

Belgium’s Remco Evenepoel is the standout favourite for glory in the men’s UCI Road World Championships individual time trial in Zurich. The defending world and current Olympic champion will face opposition from the in-form Swiss powerhouse Stefen Kung, although doubts loom over Italy’s Filippo Ganna. Meanwhile, Britain’s Josh Tarling will look to bounce back from his Olympic disappointment.
