Fabulous 4,000 acre ranch in Ka’a’awa Valley with huge variety of super fun activities from beach to ocean to zip lines to horses, jeeps, buses and more. Breathtakingly beautiful mountains. One of the best places in Hawaii Nei.

Our family took the Jurassic Park tour yesterday. Our son was interested in this and we decided to go. Our tour guide, Sunshine, was wonderful. She knew so many facts about the movies and the ranch, made the tour enjoyable (even for those of us who knew little about the movies), and was an expert in making sure we took pictures. I would highly recommend visiting the ranch!

Jurassic Park Hawaii | How to Visit Kualoa Ranch in 2024

The islands of Hawaii have so much to offer and that includes visiting Jurassic Park Hawaii, officially known as Kualoa Ranch!

Scenes from Jurassic Park and Jurassic World (among others like LOST and Fifty First Dates) were filmed on the island of Oahu, Hawaii, and are an incredible opportunity for fans to see the amazing film locations up close and in person.

And even if you are not a Jurassic Park fan? The landscape is so beautiful, that I am sure you will love the adventure anyway!

Check out out the pros and cons of the various ways to visit Jurassic Park Oahu below to help you choose the best tour. No matter which option you choose, you are sure to find that your time in the valley is among your favorite activities on Oahu!

No time to read the whole article? No problem!

Here are our top three picks:

Jurassic Adventure Tour – best tour for seeing all Jurassic Park Valleys

Movie Sites Tour – best tour for a quick overview of the movie highlights; all ages allowed

Ocean Voyage Catamaran – best tour for seeing the valley from the ocean – and maybe turtles too!

About Jurassic Park Hawaii on Oahu

Kualoa Ranch makes up 4000 acres of the northern windward side of Oahu and is made up of the Ko’olau Mountains and vibrant green valleys along the picturesque Kaneohe Bay.  It is a working cattle ranch, but is best known by tourists for its famous film locations since the 1950s. In addition to the beaches and valleys, you’ll find an ancient fish pond and gorgeous fruit and plant gardens.

The ranch is open to visitors almost every day of the year, but guided tours are required to visit the valleys and mountain ranges beyond the gift shop. Tours come in all shapes and forms to please everyone on your list from air-conditioned buses to ATVs to boat tours to ziplining.

Getting to Kualoa Ranch

Kualoa Ranch is located in Kaneohe which is about a 50 minute drive from Waikiki Beach in Honolulu. It is an easy and beautiful drive that we find quite enjoyable.  We always recommend renting a car on Oahu because there is so much to explore! Parking at Kualoa Ranch is free and easy.

Who knew Jurassic Park was so close to Honolulu?!

However, if you do not have a car, you are in luck because Kualoa Ranch offers roundtrip transportation from Honolulu for only $15 per person. You can add this on at the time of your reservation.

*Pro Tip* Upon making your reservation, you will be advised to arrive at Kualoa Ranch no later than 45 minutes before your tour time. Do not overlook this!

We arrived a few minutes after 8:00am for our 8:45am tour. By the time we headed through the gift shop and followed the dinosaur tracks to the check-in line outside, it was about 8:10am. We made it through the long line in time, but just barely! We had five minutes to spare before loading our bus, and the restroom line was too long to be able to use it in time.

CAN’t DECIDE WHICH TOUR TO CHOOSE?

We recommend the best of kualoa package deal.

This tour includes jeep ride through the rain forest, stops at movie sites, buffet lunch + farm trolley tour

How to See Jurassic Park Hawaii Movie Spots

The majority of Kualoa Ranch can only be seen by taking one of their numerous Jurassic Park Hawaii tours.

All tours are guided through the gorgeous Ka’a’awa Valley aka Jurassic Park Oahu. Kualoa Ranch offers ten different tour types ranging from mild to adventurous and lasting from one hour to 2.5 hours each.

Due to the popularity of Hawaii and it’s Jurassic Park Valley, it is imperative that you make reservations in advance. Many tours at this Jurassic Park Oahu location sell out 2-3 weeks in advance, especially in summer months.

I have heard WAY too many stories of visitors arriving to Kualoa Ranch in the morning with their favorite activity in mind, but no reservations, and finding that they are booked all day. PLEASE make a reservation!

Here are the Jurassic Park Valley tour options broken down by age requirements so that you can determine which are options for your family. There are also places to relax should some family members wish to stay behind during certain tours. A café, farm animal visiting area, and sculpture garden are all lovely for some down time for little ones.

Jurassic Park Hawaii Tours for all ages (including infants)

Movie sites tour.

Age Restrictions: None | Tour Length: 1.5 hours

The Movie Sites Tour is one of the ranch’s most popular excursions and is highly recommended for movie buffs especially. The tour will stop at several movie locations throughout the Ka’a’wa Valley, including Jurassic World, Fifty First Dates, Hawaii Five-0, LOST, and a WWII Bunker that is filled with movie props from over 60 movies that have filmed on the property.

Note that this is a different valley than the Jungle Expedition tour. If you wish to see both valleys, you may want to consider the Jungle Adventure Tour (ages 3+).

*Pro tip* Sitting on the right side will typically grant you with the best views.

Ocean Voyaging Catamaran Tour – one of our favorite Jurassic Park tours on Oahu

This Voyaging Catamaran Tour at Jurassic Park Oahu is one of our family favorites. You take a open air bus for several minutes through the property  to view the gardens and learn about medicinal properties of the plants and arrive at Secret Island (see separate tour for Secret Island below).

A brief walk through the jungle to the ocean’s edge allows you to board the catamaran. The ride is about 30-40 minutes long, taking you out around Kaneohe Bay with stunning views of the mountains from the water. You also get an up close view of Chinaman’s Hat.

After the catamaran ride, you have the opportunity to ride an outrigger canoe and learn about the ancient fish pond that has been supporting the land and its inhabitants for centuries. The canoe ride also takes you past several movie locations such as Soul Surfer and Fifty First Dates.

*Pro tip* Keep your eye out for turtles in the bay- we spotted a few!

Aloha Aina Farm Tour

This Aloha Aina Farm Tour is best for those interested in the history of Hawaii and its exported goods. On this Jurassic Park tour, you will visit the gardens and ancient fishpond via an open-air trolley. You will also see some of the movie sites filmed on the property – no tour is complete without some Hollywood experiences!

Secret Island Beach Adventure at Jurassic Park Hawaii

Age Restrictions: None | Tour Length: 2.5 hours

I first discovered this gem on my high school graduation trip (many years ago…) and upon visiting Secret Island again recently, I can see why I had such lovely memories of this place! A simple open air bus will drive you through gardens of green on a short ride to this private beach which can only be accessed on the Kualoa Ranch property.

Because only a select number of people can join the tour at one time, the beach stays peaceful and uncrowded with stunning views of Kaneohe Bay. Chinaman’s Hat is clearly visible from the beach and the palm tree lined white sand is postcard perfect.

Several activities are available during your time at Secret Island including stand up paddle boarding, kayaking, swimming, glass bottom boats, beach volleyball, table tennis, and hammocks if you just want a nap. They will provide snorkel gear and life jackets as needed.

Don’t forget to pack your beach bag with all the necessities that you won’t want to forget for your afternoon in the sun on this paradise of a beach.

*Pro Tip* Book a morning tour if you wish to snorkel here. The water is clearer in the earlier hours for fish viewing.

Jurassic Park Valley Tours for Ages 3+

All tours listed above plus:

Jungle Adventure Tour (our favorite Jurassic Park tour!)

Age Restrictions: 3+ | Tour Length: 2.5 hours

This Jurassic Adventure Tour is our top pick for tours in Jurassic Valley. This open air ride last 2.5 hours and takes you to Kualoa, Hakipu’u and Ka’a’awa Valleys giving you the best scenic views possible. Beyond the scenery, movie buffs will also loves seeing filming locations and sets from Jurassic Park, Jurassic World, and Fallen Kingdom.

Expect panoramic views on this tour – you won’t be disappointed!

Roads are bumpy on this ride, so be prepared for that. Expectant mothers or those with back issues may prefer a different tour.

Jungle Expedition Tour at Kualoa Ranch

This Jungle Expedition Tour is a great option for families looking for adventure but with littles too young for the more extreme tours. This jeep tour is known for being a bumpy ride! So hold on to your hats and think twice if back issues or motion sickness apply to anyone in your group. Some visitors report that they were given the option of a two vehicles  – one bumpy and one smoother – but don’t count on that!

This tour rewards you with gorgeous views of the real Jurassic Park Valley. You will see filming scenery from Jurassic World, Jumanji, and Lost among others. This tour goes into a completely different valley, Hakapu’u Valley, than the Hollywood Movie Sites Tour. So if you are here to see as much of the real Jurassic Park as possible, you might consider booking both tours or booking the Jurassic Adventure Tour instead which takes you to both valleys.

The guides will enjoy teaching you about the valley and the various plants growing there, often with a bit of humor thrown in. You will also have the opportunity to check out various viewpoints around the ranch, so don’t forget your camera.

At one point on the tour, you will be given the opportunity to take an optional 10 minute hike to the top. The views are stunning from the lookout, but please note, that it is a bit of a strenuous hike and requires appropriate shoes to safely climb rocks and tree roots.

*Pro tip*  Where you choose to sit is everything on this ride!

Want a wild and bumpy ride? Sit in the back! Is it raining? Sit in the front to stay dry! Want to see the best scenery? Sit on the right side! Want a close up of Indominus Rex from Jurassic World? Sit on the left side!

Jurassic Park Valley Tours for Ages 5+

Utv raptor tour.

Age Restrictions: 5+ | Tour Length: 1-2 hour options

The best part of this UTV Raptor tour is that it is family friendly and allows families to ride together in their own vehicle (fits 2 to 6 people). This is similar to the ATV tour except that on this one you can visit with one another and take photos rather than ride as individuals. This tour also allows children, which the ATV tour cannot accommodate.

You will cover a large area of Kualoa Ranch including hills, stream crossings, and gorgeous ridgelines and coastal views. You will view movie locations from Jurassic Park, Jurassic World, Jumanji and several others. Kong Skull Island is another highlight of the movie locations on this tour. One adult over 21 years old will be the driver.  You will ride single file in a line with a max speed of 14 MPH to explore the Ka’a’awa Valley. This tour allows you to tour trails deep in the Valley that are not easily accessible to others.

There are one- and two-hour tours available. The areas visited are similar on both Jurassic Valley tours, however, the two-hour tour allows more time for stopping at movie locations and viewpoints for photo taking and learning about the history of the area. One hour is never enough, but will still be wonderful if that is all the time you have.

You are provided with helmets and a safety training video. Wear clothes that you don’t mind getting dirty because it is very dusty! Sunglasses are recommended for eye protection.

*Pro tip* Purchase a bandana in the ranch gift shop to cover your face on this DUSTY ride. It will double as a practical and fun souvenir!

Kualoa Ranch Zipline Tours

Age Restrictions: 10+ with height minimums | Tour Length: 2-3 hours

This Zip Lining Tour at Kualoa Ranch gives you an aerial view of the ranch resulting in views that are more expansive that the other tours. The tour offers seven ziplines as well as a couple of swinging bridges. You have the option to stop after the first 200 foot warm up line – but who would want to?!

We recommend booking this tour early, because the sun gets very hot up there throughout the day! Lockers are provided free of charge for all belongings except for secured Go-Pros.

Photo packages are available to capture your experience ziplining among the gorgeous mountains. They are currently $40/person or $15 per photo.

*Pro tip* This tour takes the same path as the ATV and UTV Tours, with the same movie sites, so keep this in mind if booking multiple tours.

Jurassic Park Valley Tours for Ages 16+

Age Restrictions: 16+ | Tour Length: 2.5 hours

This ATV tour takes the same path as the UTV Raptor Tour but is for older teens and adults who would like to ride separately rather than together.  This is a very fun, but very bumpy and dusty ride through the Valley!

The ATVs offer one- or two-hour tours. The paths through Jurassic Valley Hawaii are similar on each tour, but the one-hour tour will stop at only one location (maybe Godzilla’s footprint? It’s up to your guide!) for photos and exploring, while the two hour tour will stop at more. You may find yourself disappointed if you book the one hour tour and have to zip by all the cool places that you would like to stop and discover!

You will ride the ATVs in a single file line behind the guide at a max speed of 12MPH. This is perfect for those who are beginner riders or who are happy to just soak up the beauty of the mountains and valley around them, but might be a bit slow for thrill seekers!

*Pro-Tip* This tour takes you to the same movie locations as the Movie Sites Tour.

How to Book Tickets at Kualoa Ranch

Book your activities for early in the day as it gets much hotter and busier throughout the day as the tour buses start arriving.

Kualoa Ranch prides themselves on their low guide to guest ratio ensuring that you are well cared for during your adventures. We found the staff to all be very friendly and helpful before and after booking our activities.

If you plan to purchase several activities around Oahu, you might find that the Go Oahu card is the best bang for your buck.

Note, that the Go Oahu card does offer several Kualoa Ranch activities on the pass, however, you can only do one per day. Once you receive your card, call Kualoa Ranch directly to reserve your time slots with your Go Oahu card number. The Go Oahu card does not ensure availability for the activity if you forget to make a reservation.

Our family did choose to purchase the Go Oahu card, but as we had a rental car and did not need tours for every day of our trip, we chose the Build Your Own option , which was perfect for us and saved us 20% . This gave us the flexibility to save money on a few excursions, but also to take our rental car around the island and explore on our own for most of our vacation on Oahu.

Of all of the beauty and adventure that we have experienced on this island over multiple trips, our times at at Kualoa Ranch on Oahu are among our favorites!

11 Jurassic Park Spots That You Can Actually Visit

Prehistoric beauty

Most of us have seen every Jurassic Park movie (or at least the original), which was a childhood fantasy, a nightmare, and the adventure of a lifetime being realized on the big screen in 1993. Aside from the highly realistic dinosaurs and easy-to-imagine-happening-in-real-life plot line, the landscape and scenery in Jurassic Park is spectacularly stunning and it’s even more amazing that you can actually visit many of the spots where the movies were shot.

Isla del coco, costa rica.

It’s a popularly held belief that the inspiration for Isla Nublar in Jurassic Park came from Isla del Coco in Costa Rica. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is located 550 kilometers (340 miles) off the coast of Costa Rica and the only way to reach this mystical place is by boat. The journey takes upwards of 36 hours but the dramatic landscape and verdant vegetation makes it easy to see why this place might have inspired one of the greatest dinosaur movies of all times.

A good place for hiding from dinosaurs

Red Rock Canyon, Mojave Desert, California

Deep in the desert

Kualoa Ranch, Oahu

The heart-pumping scene where Dr. Alan and the kids are caught in the midst of a Gallimimus stampede and duck behind a massive fallen tree to avoid being trampled and spotted by the T-Rex that’s chasing the herd was filmed on the Kualoa Ranch in Oahu. The infamous fallen tree is actually still on the ranch and is marked by a Jurassic Park sign.

Look familiar?

Nā Pali Coast, Kauai

When the cast first approaches Isla Nublar in the movie, you are actually seeing the Nā Pali Coast in Kauai.

This just feels like Jurassic Park

Olokele Valley, Kauai

In the first movie, once the cast is inside the park, the electric fence that the T-Rex eventually breaks through when the power fails was constructed near the Olokele Valley in the northwest part of Waimea .

Watch out!

Ho’opi’i Falls on Kapa’a Stream

Set in the Dominican Republic in the movie, the scene where the lawyer, who is later eaten off the toilet, goes to inspect the amber mine was actually filmed on the Kapa’a Stream in Kauai. These beautiful falls are relatively unknown to tourists but you can hike to the falls by following the Kapa’a Stream . There isn’t a well-marked path, so expect this hike to be challenging even though it isn’t very long. This is definitely an off-the-beaten-path adventure and will make you feel like you’re right alongside Dr. Alan.

It’s a treacherous hike to this Jurassic gem

Hanapepe Valley, Kauai

When the Jurassic Park cast is in the helicopter flying into Isla Nublar, the shots of the densely forested valley were filmed in the Hanapepe Valley. You can actually take a helicopter tour while you are in Kauai on which you’ll be able to recognize the spectacular Manawaiopuna Falls.

Surely you remember this iconic waterfall

Puu Ka Ele Reservoir, Kauai

The legendary moment when Dr. Alan, Dr. Ellie, and the rest of the original cast members encounter the dinosaurs on Isla Nublar takes place on the Puu Ka Ele Reservoir. This is one of the only truly peaceful dinosaur encounters for the rest of the movie.

Jurassic Park Hawaii: The Ultimate Guide to Visiting Kualoa Ranch

What do Jurassic Park, Lost, and 50 First Dates all have in common? They were all filmed at Kualoa Ranch aka Jurassic Park Hawaii! If you’re planning to visit Oahu , I highly recommend spending some time at Kualoa Ranch. I went during my one week trip in Oahu, and it was easily one of the best things we did.

About Kualoa Ranch

Kualoa Ranch is a 4,000 acre Private Nature Reserve. The reserve got its start in 1850, when King Kamehameha III sold 622 acres to Dr. Gerritt P. Judd which included Mokoli’i, the small island known as “Chinaman’s Hat.” Later, Judd’s son purchased more land in the from Queen Kalama’s land holdings to increase the area to the 4,000 acres it is today.

Although it’s known as Jurassic Park Hawaii, there have been tons of other films and shows filmed on the property. Kong Skull Island, Jumanji, Pearl Harbor, and Godzilla are just some of them. Kualola also serves as a venue for private events and weddings.

The reserve aims to protect the lands from development by offering tour and activities that are sustainable and compatible with the environment. Continue reading to see what tours they offer.

How to Get to Kualoa Ranch aka Jurassic Park Hawaii

Kualoa Ranch is about 45 minutes from Waikiki. Kualoa suggests getting to the ranch 45 minutes prior to your tour, and I believe that’s to accommodate for traffic and road construction. If your tour is 11:45 AM attempt to get to the ranch by 11:00 AM and you’ll probably actually get there at 11:15 AM. If you leave at 11:00 AM to get there by 11:45 AM, there’s a good chance you’ll miss your tour.

Tour Transfer

Kualoa also offers transfers from Waikiki to their property for certain tours. The tours eligible for transfers are Jurassic Adventure Tour, Ocean Voyage Tour, UTV Raptor Tour, Jungle Expedition Tour, Hollywood Movie Sites & Ranch Tour, Jurassic Valley Zipline, E-Bike Tours, Horseback Tour, Best of Kualoa Experience Package, and the Half Day Package.

Tour transfers cost $30 per person + tax. As there is no door-to-door service, you’ll want to find the nearest pick up location to your accommodation. Pick up locations are, Aston Waikiki Beach Hotel, Sheraton Waikiki Hotel, and The Modern Honolulu.

Tours Available at Kualoa Ranch

Tips for Visiting Kualoa Ranch – Jurassic Park Hawaii

Definitely plan on booking in advance! I actually had to rearrange our itinerary to fit in our visit. The tours we took stared filling up about 3 weeks in advance. Also, I overheard one of the employees talking to a couple interested in taking a tour, and she said they were completely sold out for the day and that they only had two available for the next day.

On another note, give your self plenty of time to get to get to your tour. Kualoa Ranch is about 45 minutes from Waikiki, but there’s often traffic, construction, and there was actually a one-way section that took us about 10 minutes to get through.

How much does it cost to visit Kualoa Ranch?

Tours range from $51.95 USD – $174.95 USD + tax for adults, and $36.95 USD – $99.95 USD + tax for children.

Can you visit Kualoa Ranch without a tour?

Unfortunately, no. The property is massive and there’s tons of tours happening at all times. It wouldn’t be very safe to wander around given the terrain. Also, all tours on the ranch are guided.

What is Kualoa Ranch known for?

Kualoa Ranch is known for being the real life Jurassic Park. On the property, there’s signs detailing filming locations for different movies and TV shows. I saw some for Jurassic World, Lost, and Kong Skull Island.

The release of Jurassic Park in 1993 not only marked a monumental moment in cinematic history but also cast a global spotlight on Kauai, transforming it into a must-visit destination for fans and adventurers alike. The island’s lush rainforests, dramatic cliff faces, and cascading waterfalls epitomized the prehistoric and untamed world that Steven Spielberg sought to capture, making it the perfect canvas for his dinosaur epic. Kauai’s mesmerizing landscapes have since become synonymous with the wonder and adventure of Jurassic Park, drawing visitors eager to step into the world where dinosaurs once roamed. The film’s legacy continues to contribute significantly to Kauai’s tourism, celebrating the natural beauty that made the island an unforgettable star of the silver screen.

  • Book Tours in Advance: Popular tours, especially helicopter and special access tours to places like Manawaiopuna Falls, can fill up quickly. Book well in advance to secure your spot.

  • Cash for Tips: Having cash on hand is useful for tipping your tour guides, who often go above and beyond to make your adventure memorable.

Conservation Efforts in Kauai

Kauai’s unparalleled natural beauty, which provided the stunning backdrop for Jurassic Park, is not just a cinematic treasure but also an ecological one, necessitating ongoing conservation efforts to preserve its landscapes for future generations. The importance of respecting and protecting this lush paradise has led many tour operators on the island to adopt eco-friendly practices, such as limiting group sizes to reduce impact, using biodegradable products, and educating visitors on the local flora and fauna. Additionally, several initiatives, such as the Kauai Invasive Species Committee and the Rainforest Restoration, are in place to combat invasive species and restore native habitats.

Compliance status

Screen-reader and keyboard navigation.

  • Screen-reader optimization: we run a background process that learns the website’s components from top to bottom, to ensure ongoing compliance even when updating the website. In this process, we provide screen-readers with meaningful data using the ARIA set of attributes. For example, we provide accurate form labels; descriptions for actionable icons (social media icons, search icons, cart icons, etc.); validation guidance for form inputs; element roles such as buttons, menus, modal dialogues (popups), and others. Additionally, the background process scans all of the website’s images and provides an accurate and meaningful image-object-recognition-based description as an ALT (alternate text) tag for images that are not described. It will also extract texts that are embedded within the image, using an OCR (optical character recognition) technology. To turn on screen-reader adjustments at any time, users need only to press the Alt+1 keyboard combination. Screen-reader users also get automatic announcements to turn the Screen-reader mode on as soon as they enter the website. These adjustments are compatible with all popular screen readers, including JAWS and NVDA.
  • Keyboard navigation optimization: The background process also adjusts the website’s HTML, and adds various behaviors using JavaScript code to make the website operable by the keyboard. This includes the ability to navigate the website using the Tab and Shift+Tab keys, operate dropdowns with the arrow keys, close them with Esc, trigger buttons and links using the Enter key, navigate between radio and checkbox elements using the arrow keys, and fill them in with the Spacebar or Enter key.Additionally, keyboard users will find quick-navigation and content-skip menus, available at any time by clicking Alt+1, or as the first elements of the site while navigating with the keyboard. The background process also handles triggered popups by moving the keyboard focus towards them as soon as they appear, and not allow the focus drift outside of it.Users can also use shortcuts such as “M” (menus), “H” (headings), “F” (forms), “B” (buttons), and “G” (graphics) to jump to specific elements.

Disability profiles supported in our website

  • Epilepsy Safe Mode: this profile enables people with epilepsy to use the website safely by eliminating the risk of seizures that result from flashing or blinking animations and risky color combinations.
  • Visually Impaired Mode: this mode adjusts the website for the convenience of users with visual impairments such as Degrading Eyesight, Tunnel Vision, Cataract, Glaucoma, and others.
  • Cognitive Disability Mode: this mode provides different assistive options to help users with cognitive impairments such as Dyslexia, Autism, CVA, and others, to focus on the essential elements of the website more easily.
  • ADHD Friendly Mode: this mode helps users with ADHD and Neurodevelopmental disorders to read, browse, and focus on the main website elements more easily while significantly reducing distractions.
  • Blindness Mode: this mode configures the website to be compatible with screen-readers such as JAWS, NVDA, VoiceOver, and TalkBack. A screen-reader is software for blind users that is installed on a computer and smartphone, and websites must be compatible with it.
  • Keyboard Navigation Profile (Motor-Impaired): this profile enables motor-impaired persons to operate the website using the keyboard Tab, Shift+Tab, and the Enter keys. Users can also use shortcuts such as “M” (menus), “H” (headings), “F” (forms), “B” (buttons), and “G” (graphics) to jump to specific elements.

Additional UI, design, and readability adjustments

  • Font adjustments – users, can increase and decrease its size, change its family (type), adjust the spacing, alignment, line height, and more.
  • Color adjustments – users can select various color contrast profiles such as light, dark, inverted, and monochrome. Additionally, users can swap color schemes of titles, texts, and backgrounds, with over 7 different coloring options.
  • Animations – epileptic users can stop all running animations with the click of a button. Animations controlled by the interface include videos, GIFs, and CSS flashing transitions.
  • Content highlighting – users can choose to emphasize important elements such as links and titles. They can also choose to highlight focused or hovered elements only.
  • Audio muting – users with hearing devices may experience headaches or other issues due to automatic audio playing. This option lets users mute the entire website instantly.
  • Cognitive disorders – we utilize a search engine that is linked to Wikipedia and Wiktionary, allowing people with cognitive disorders to decipher meanings of phrases, initials, slang, and others.
  • Additional functions – we provide users the option to change cursor color and size, use a printing mode, enable a virtual keyboard, and many other functions.

Where to Visit the Real Jurassic World After You See the Film

The movie’s filming locations and inspiration offer lush vegetation, stunning views and plenty of sharks

Michele Lent Hirsch

visit jurassic park

Dinosaurs stalk the land of Isla Nublar in Michael Crichton’s original Jurassic Park . Now, although Crichton died in 2008 , the Jurassic World sequel powers on, with new dinosaurs roaming the same island. Fans of the film can’t see ancient reptiles roam Nublar, of course, but they can visit what might be the next best thing: the island said to have inspired the place, and the stunning locations where Isla Nublar scenes were filmed.

Cocos Island , an island west of Costa Rica in the Pacific Ocean, was likely the inspiration for Isla Nublar . As a filmmaker who visited Cocos while producing an IMAX film puts it, “ Cocos Island looks and feels like Jurassic Park .”

Unesco has designated Cocos a World Heritage site, and notes that it's the “ first point of contact with the northern equatorial counter-current.” That position in the water, combined with the surrounding marine ecosystem, make Cocos an ideal laboratory to study biological processes.

Sound familiar?

At Cocos Island National Park, there are no scientists breeding Indominus rex , the new dino that terrorizes Jurassic Word . But humans have unleashed non-native species there, including pigs , which certainly ties into the film’s theme of what goes wrong when we disrupt an ecosystem. Still, the most exciting creatures to see on Cocos are much bigger than pigs. According to Unesco, divers rate it one of the best places in the world to view large open-sea creatures such as sharks, rays, tuna and bottlenose dolphins .

“ Vast migrations of hammerhead shark , and white-tip shark and fish pass close to the island,” the organization notes, and there are also many whale shark and manta ray in surrounding waters. Whale sharks, the world’s largest species of fish, can grow up to 42 feet long and weigh more than 20 tons —about ten times as heavy as a car . But, luckily for those who want to go diving off Cocos, these sharks eat plankton, algae and krill—not people—and apparently make lovely underwater companions.

Getting to Cocos isn’t easy: It takes about 30 hours to reach it from mainland Costa Rica, and tourists and scientists need approval from park rangers to visit. In the past, poachers have stolen sharks and other animals. But for a place so lush with incredible marine life and so green that Unesco calls its vegetation “ exuberant ,” it just might be worth the trip.

Fans have another option, too: visiting the island of Kauai, Hawaii, where part of the new movie, and previous editions,  have been filmed . Like Cocos, Kauai teems with wildlife, though many of its native plants are  endangered . The “ spectacular Nā Pali coast ,” as one Atlas of Wonders writer  puts it , is a range of stunning cliffs on Kauai that rise up to 4,000 feet above the ocean—and they star in  Jurassic World ’s aerial shots. Kauai also highlights the ecosystem-run-amok theme: Flocks of  feral chickens overwhelm the island , showing up in every imaginable place with few predators. Scientists are  trying to figure out  where exactly these chickens came from; some say the extreme abundance stems from hurricanes that caused captive birds to escape.

Moviegoers can also relive the dinosaurs’ habitat at  Kualoa Ranch , a 4,000-acre working cattle ranch in Oahu, Hawaii, that stretches “from the steep mountain cliffs to the sparkling sea.” The ranch helped provide the  setting for Isla Nublar —and bills itself both as a  sacred, historic area  with varied terrain and as  Hollywood’s “Hawaii Backlot.”  Visitors can take a 90-minute movie tour or explore the land’s striking  rainforests and beaches  via horseback, all-terrain vehicle or hiking.

17 Best 'Jurassic Park' Filming Locations You Can Visit

We promise there won't be a T. rex waiting for you at these incredible Jurassic Park filming locations.

visit jurassic park

ShaneMyersPhoto / Getty Images

The release of "Jurassic World Dominion" helped make 2022 a big year for summer Hollywood blockbuster movies. In case you missed it, Owen Grady (Chris Pratt) returned to save us all from the dinosaurs (again), this time, on a global scale. Thankfully, as the film's trailer alludes , he got a little help from a few old friends, including Dr. Alan Grant (Sam Neill), Dr. Ellie Sattler (Laura Dern), and Dr. Ian Malcom (Jeff Goldblum).

While the movie trailer has us in full nostalgia mode, it's also sparking our wanderlust. We're ready to help you marry those two feelings by sharing 17 of the best Jurassic Park film locations you can visit in real life. We promise there won't be a Tyrannosaurus rex or a velociraptor in sight.

Na Pali Coast, Kauai, Hawaii

HaizhanZheng / Getty Images

Kauai, Hawaii's fourth-largest island, is essentially its own character in the Jurassic Park franchise. The island is featured in every film as the fictitious Isla Nublar, where the dinosaurs were brought back to life, bred, and roamed free. In 2015's "Jurassic World," the island made a comeback as the new Garden Isle. One of the most awe-inspiring film locations on the real island of Kauai is the Na Pali Coast, which also serves as the fictional Isla Sorna, or "Site B" as Jurassic Park fans recall. The best way to see this magnificent coastline for yourself is either from the water or the air, as there's no way to reach it by car. Hop aboard a charter boat with a company like Makana Charters to see the towering cliffs in all their glory, or take to the sky with Blue Hawaiian Helicopter tours to hover over and alongside them.

Red Rock Canyon State Park, California

Remember this terrifying scene from the original film when Dr. Grant explains just how scary a raptor could be? You know, the one where it's described as a "six-foot turkey"? Well, that scene was filmed in the very real Red Rock Canyon State Park in California. It's a rather well-chosen set too because, as California State Parks explains, "hidden behind the scenes in the layers of rock is what amounts to paleontologists as a treasure trove." Explore the park for yourself on a hiking or camping adventure, though if you do find any dinosaur bones, please leave them where you found them.

Kipu Kai, Kauai, Hawaii

The second installment of the Jurassic Park franchise kicks off with the Bowman family having a delightful day at the beach before, of course, their daughter is attacked by a hungry squad of tiny dinos. The real beach is Kipu Kai , a stunning two-mile stretch of sand that was also featured in "The Descendants." Once again, the best way to get there is via the water. Check out Captain Andy's Sailing Adventures for the ultimate ride there.

Halona Beach, Oahu, Hawaii

When Owen, Claire, and Franklin wash ashore in "Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom," the threesome appear to be on a desolate stretch of shoreline. In actuality, it's the rather popular Halona Beach . Though it's a bit of a hike to get to, this beach is an ideal spot for a romantic day in the sand. And if it looks super familiar, that's because it's also been featured in films like "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides" and "From Here to Eternity."

Kualoa Ranch, Oahu, Hawaii

Kent Nishimura / Los Angeles Times via Getty Images

Kualoa Ranch on the Hawaiian Island of Oahu is quite the star. It shows up in "Jurassic Park," "Jurassic World," and "Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom" as the wide, expansive space where we see all the famed stampede scenes. The ranch has capitalized on the publicity and now offers tours of the property and many of its popular film locations by bus, boat, ATV, or e-bike in addition to other outdoor activities.

Allerton Garden, Kauai, Hawaii

If you've been to Hawaii before, you know the flora and fauna here are huge — and we're talking big enough to feed an entire herd of Brachiosaurus (Brachiosauri? Brachiosaurus's? Anyway, we digress). That's likely why the location scouts for the Jurassic Park franchise chose to film at the Allerton Garden , part of Kauai's National Tropical Botanical Garden . Come for a self-guided walk or take a tour to learn about all the plant life you can find here as well as on the rest of the Hawaiian Islands.

Kamloops and Merritt, British Columbia, Canada

Cold-weather destinations were also celebrated and featured in "Jurassic World Dominion." As the trailer (linked above) shows, the dinosaurs have made their way to some icy-looking tundra, which in the real world happens to be British Columbia. According to reports, both the Kamloops and Merritt areas served as backdrops — the movie producers even recruited locals in the area as extras via Twitter. Film crews were spotted in downtown Merritt setting up shop across from the Coldwater Hotel , which you can stay in to relive the movie magic.

Valletta and Birgu, Malta

British Columbia wasn't the only destination that made its Jurassic Park debut. Malta was another major player in "Jurassic World Dominion." The Mediterranean archipelago's capital, Valletta, was featured — you can get a glimpse of it in the trailer as Owen rides his motorcycle through the city streets — as well as the fortified cities of Birgu and Floriana. Għar Tuta cave in Mellieħa doubled as a dig site in what was supposed to be Utah, while St. Lawrence's Church in Vittoriosa also makes an appearance.

Manawaiopuna Falls, Kauai, Hawaii

7Michael / Getty Images

Manawaiopuna Falls , also known as "Jurassic Park Falls," is one more must-see Kauai destination to visit on a Jurassic journey. The famous falls served as the backdrop for the helicopter takeoff and landing scenes in the first film. Though the falls sit on private property, you can still catch a glimpse of them by booking your own helicopter ride with an outfitter such as the Hawaii Adventure Center .

Universal Studios, California

Sorry to ruin the movie fun for you, but we have to let you in on a secret: Not all the places you see in films are real. Gasp! We know. Some of the scenes from the Jurassic Park franchise were actually staged at Universal Studios in Hollywood. According to The Cinemaholic , a "considerable" number of scenes were set in Stage 12, Stage 24, Stage 27, and Stage 28 at Universal Studios in Universal City, California. Of course, the folks at Universal Studios Hollywood would love to show you around on one of its studio tours , which also reveal the behind-the-scenes magic of some of its other famous franchises, like Fast and Furious .

Honolulu Zoo, Oahu, Hawaii

Located in Kapi'olani Regional Park, halfway between Waikiki Beach and Diamond Head State Monument, Honolulu Zoo doubled as the Isla Nublar resort's children's petting zoo in "Jurassic World." While there are (obviously) no actual dinosaurs at the real Honolulu Zoo , you can still visit the roughly 900 animals that do call it home, including orangutans, Komodo dragons, lemurs, giraffes, sloths, rhinos, penguins, elephants, and all manner of other reptiles, amphibians, and birds.

Hawaii Convention Center, Oahu, Hawaii

If the fictional Hilton Isla Nublar Resort in "Jurassic World" looked familiar, that's because it's actually the Hawaii Convention Center . When it's not playing a fancy hotel in the movies, it's where you'll find all sorts of events and festivals throughout the year, like the Made in Hawaii Festival, the Okinawan Festival, the Hawaii Pacific Model United Nations as well as health and travel expos and a number of corporate conferences. Check the website's events calendar to see if anything fun will be happening during your trip.

Ho'opi'i Falls, Kauai, Hawaii

imagebroker / Thomas Lammeyer / Getty Images

In the original "Jurassic Park" film, it's explained that the mosquito fossils being used to regenerate the dino-DNA came from the Mano de Dios Amber Mine in the Dominican Republic. It turns out that footage was shot a long way away from the D.R., and was actually filmed at a site near Ho'opi'i Falls on the Hawaiian Island of Kauai. The 1.8-mile out-and-back trail is considered to be a moderate-level hike and begins in a residential neighborhood, so be on your best hiking trail behavior.

Garden of Eden Arboretum and Botanical Garden, Maui, Hawaii

This beautiful garden on the island of Maui was featured several times in the O.G. "Jurassic Park" movie. The popular spot along Maui's legendary Hana Drive is the first place you'll see as the scientists make their way to the island on their epic helicopter ride (skip to the 1:25 mark). It's where you'll find "Jurassic Rock," or, in reality, Keōpuka Rock, which makes a memorable appearance in that arrival scene. Hike the trail to the Keōpuka Rock Overlook for amazing views of the famous formation with the blue waters of the Pacific Ocean in the background.

Limahuli Garden and Preserve, Kauai, Hawaii

Limahuli Garden and Preserve , part of Kauai's National Tropical Botanical Garden , was featured in the first "Jurassic Park" film, although the exact location looks a little different now than it did in the '90s. The area where the Visitor Center currently stands once doubled as the velociraptor paddock, and the place where the raptors viciously attack their captors as they're being transferred in the opening scene. Today, you can visit the garden to see its diverse collection of endangered plants and birds, and learn about the indigenous Hawaiian people's history and culture. Guided and self-guided tours are available, though you will need to reserve your spot through the website ahead of time.

He'eia State Park, Oahu, Hawaii

This dramatic escape sequence from "Jurassic Park: Fallen Kingdom" was actually filmed in He'eia State Park , on the Windward side of Oahu in Kaneohe. You won't have to worry about over-the-top Hollywood-style CGI volcanic eruptions in the real-life park — just take in the views of the nearby Ko'olau Mountains on a self-guided walking tour of the 18-acre site.

Hangar 79, Oahu, Hawaii

At the end of "Jurassic World," the scene where the characters are reunited in the big airplane hangar was shot in Hangar 79 at the Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum . Visit the museum to learn about what happened that fateful December day in 1941 — you can still see the holes left by the bullets that struck the historic building's blue glass windows during the attack on Pearl Harbor. Don't leave without checking out the WWII-era helicopters and historic airplanes from all different decades, and touring the Ford Island Control Tower, where the air raid on Pearl Harbor was first broadcast by radio.

A quick-service kiosk located just across from the entrance of Jurassic Park River Adventure, this spot has some delicious snacks including a guava pastry, beef empanada, and a blue dulce de leche churro. They also sell fresh fruit such as pineapple or watermelon with tajin, grapes, oranges, or apples.

Thunder Falls Terrace

Thunder Falls Terrace

Another huge quick service location right by Jurassic Park River Adventure, this restaurant serves rotisserie chicken, barbeque ribs, rice bowls, smoked turkey legs, and more. Some would argue this spot has some of the best food in Islands of Adventure! This spot does accept mobile ordering through the Universal Orlando resort app !

The Watering Hole

This small outdoor jungle hut serves snacks, tropical cocktails, wine, beer, and more. My personal favorite is the Isla Nublar IPA, a beer exclusively brewed for Jurassic Park!

VelociCoaster

Let’s wrap up this Jurassic Park guide with a few rapid fire tips to ensure that you’ll have a fun and enjoyable experience at Universal Orlando.

Take Advantage of Single Rider to Ride Jurassic World VelociCoaster: Since this ride often sees very long wait times, taking advantage of the single rider line can come in real handy. Just be sure that your group is okay with potentially being split up!

Dry Off at the Drying Stations After Riding Jurassic Park River Adventure: Just outside the exit of this water attraction, make sure to look for the drying stations where you can purchase a session to stand in one of the giant dryers to dry off!

Early Park Admission Can Save You Loads of Time: Jurassic World VelociCoaster is one of the few rides you can ride during Early Park Admission, so take advantage of this perk when you can!

Without Early Park Admission or Single Rider, We Advise riding VelociCoaster First: While everyone else is hurrying over to Hagrid’s Magical Creature Motorbike Adventure, head over to VelociCoaster first thing in the morning for your best bet at the shortest wait time you’ll see all day

Contrary to what many people may think, Jurassic Park is not Disney and is in fact owned by Universal. To experience Jurassic Park, you can head over to Universal Orlando in Florida or Universal Studios Hollywood in California!

Jurassic Park River Adventure is a water drop ride, so you’re very likely to get wet on the Jurassic Park ride at Universal Orlando! Not to worry though, because there are drying stations just after the exit of the ride.

While scary can be interpreted differently to different readers, the Jurassic Park River Adventure ride at Universal features some close encounters with dinosaurs and an 95-foot drop at the end. If you’re not up for either of these, you may want to pass on this ride!

The Jurassic Park River Adventure ride at Universal Studios in Orlando, Florida is still up and running. However, Jurassic Park River Adventure is known to close when the weather is colder and there is less demand.

The Jurassic Park River Adventure ride at Universal Orlando starts as a relaxing river adventure and turns into an escape of a lifetime, ending with a 95-foot drop, almost ensuring that guests get wet. However, this drop is no match for the 155-foot top-hat drop on Jurassic World: VelociCoaster!

List of Jurassic Park attractions:

  • Jurassic World VelociCoaster

Jurassic Park River Adventure

Pteranodon flyers, camp jurassic, velocicoaster.

The VelociCoaster is Universal Orlando’s newest addition and is one of the most thrilling rides in all of Orlando. The VelociCoaster is inspired from the Jurassic World films, with Owen Grady and Claire Dearing as your guides through your tour into the velociraptor enclosure. This Jurassic Park ride at Islands of Adventure is all an adrenaline lover needs with two high speed launches, barrel rolls, 155 feet top hat drop and Velociraptors looking to make you their lunch. This new Jurassic Park ride is offered during Early Park Admission too , which is great seeing as that it is one of the most popular rides in all of Universal Orlando Resort.

The Jurassic Park River Adventure gives us all the nostalgic feels, as you board a bright yellow river raft to give you a tour of the dinosaurs up close. Of course, you can expect a Jurassic Park boat ride to have some dangerous mishaps along the way when you’re within an arms distance of prehistoric creatures. It’s important to note that this is also considered to be one of the Universal Orlando water rides located in the main two theme parks.

This Universal Studios Jurassic Park ride is more for the kiddos, so if you’re traveling with little ones, make sure to check it out. Pteranodon Flyers is a slow and gentle swing ride suspended in the air while flying beneath the 10 foot wings of a Pteranodon. Just note that this attraction is only for kids, and adults can only ride if they have riders with them between 36 and 56 inches. You can get amazing view of the Islands of Adventure lagoon while aboard your dino. so if you can, we definitely recommend giving it a shot.

While Camp Jurassic isn’t technically a Universal Jurassic Park Ride , it is still an attraction that we highly recommend. If you’re looking to cool down or let the kids run off some energy, Camp Jurassic is a giant playground with all the bells and whistles you could ask for. This Jurassic Park ride in Orlando has rope bridges, hidden pathways, lost caves, water cannons and more! Just know the area is BIG, so keep an eye on little ones!

Tips and Tricks for Visiting Jurassic Park at Universal Orlando 2024

visit jurassic park

Okay, so now you have your Jurassic Park theme park tickets and you’re ready to experience the ultimate hunt at Universal. Luckily, we surviv-, been many times and have the best tips and tricks on how to have the best day when visiting the Jurassic World park in Universal.

Top tips and tricks for Universal Islands of Adventure Jurassic Park:

Use Early Park Admission

Use single rider.

  • You can dry off if you need to!
  • Make sure to say hi to a real velociraptor
  • Don’t skip the Jurassic Park Discovery Center

This is probably our most important tip for visiting the Jurassic Park land in Universal is to use Early Park Admission. Since Jurassic World VelociCoaster is so popular, guests can be waiting upwards of 60 minutes to take a ride. There are only a few attractions offered during this time, and Jurassic World VelociCoaster is one of them!

If you don’t like getting up in the morning or can’t get Early Park Admission, your second way to cut down the wait time is to do Single Rider for VelociCoaster . This could potentially get you on the Jurassic World attraction much faster than regular stand-by. Just note, Single Rider does not guarantee a shorter wait and you could potentially be waiting longer than stand-by if it isn’t too busy.

Dry off if you need to

You can get pretty wet when riding on the Jurassic Park River Adventure attraction, and we know it can be a miserable day if you’re stuck in wet clothes all day. Around Jurassic Outfitters, you will find drying stations where you can purchase a session to stand in one of the giant dryers and air yourself out.

Raptor Encounter

The Raptor Encounter is one of the most immersive experiences guests can get when visiting the Jurassic World Universal Orlando section of the park. Those wanting to can meet Blue the Velociraptor, in a very life-like interaction at this character meet and greet .

Jurassic Park Discovery Center

As the true centerpiece of everything in the Universal Studios Jurassic Park area, The Discovery Center is a must-do attraction. This is the exact replica from the iconic Jurassic Park film filled with dinosaur skeletons, models and even hatching raptor eggs.

Is there a real dinosaur at Universal Studios?

So, while the character meet and greet with Blue the Velociraptor is VERY life like, and even pretty scary for little ones … she is not real. We truly wish there was a way that we could meet a real-life dinosaur while inside of Jurassic Park. Unfortunately, we will have to settle with the dinos inside of the attractions and the very immersive meet and greets Universal comes up with.

Where was Jurassic Park filmed? Locations and visitor info for all the movies

Many of the popular filming locations, from hawaii to europe, can be toured by visitors.

Jurassic Park , the 1993 Steven Spielberg -directed blockbuster based on a novel of the same name, sparked a sci-fi franchise beloved by fans that has spanned five sequels over the three decades since its release.

Many key scenes were shot across various islands in Hawaii, with the original trilogy branching out to sites across California, and the more recent trio of films going global to Canada, Malta and the UK.

Diehard fans will be excited to know that many of these sites can be visited by tourists. Read on for everything you need to know about the various filming locations for Jurassic Park and its sequels, as well as how you can visit them.

Where was Jurassic Park filmed?

In the movies, the fictional island of Isla Nublar lies near Central America, 120 miles west of Costa Rica. In reality, much of the filming took place in Hawaii in the Pacific Ocean.

The main island which stars as Isla Nublar is actually Oahu, the third-largest Hawaiian island. Kualoa Ranch provided a hub for several scenes – as well as plenty of other movies and TV shows, including Lost , Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle and Kong: Skull Island .

Another popular filming site for Jurassic Park – the state’s fourth-largest island.

A few scenes were shot at Jurassic Kahili Ranch , as well as Manawaiopuna Falls . The latter was used for a helicopter takeoff and landing scenes in the original movie.

Kauai’s “ Blue Hole ” serves as the front gate to Jurassic Park, while Olokele Valley is seen in the electric fence scene and Hoopii Falls in Kapaa acts as the Mano de Dios Amber Mine.

Also used are Valley House Plantation Estate in Kealia, which becomes the Visitor Centre exterior, and Waikoko Forest Management Road at the base of Mount Wai’ale’ale, which is the site of the Jurassic Park gate, according to IMDB.

Allerton Garden and Limahuli Garden , both part of Kauai’s National Tropical Botanical Garden, featured in the film, as did Lawai and Hanapepe Valley .

The Garden of Eden Arboretum and Botanical Garden on Maui was featured several times in the original movie, including in an opening scene when scientists make their way to the island by helicopter.

Various studios were used for on-set filming of interior and night scenes, including Warner Brothers Burbank Studios and Universal Studios .

Tehachapi Pass , across the Tehachapi Mountains in Kern County, was used to film an archaeological dig, as was Red Rock Canyon State Park near Ridgecrest in the Mojave Desert. The Griffith Observatory in Los Angeles was another filming site for the original movie, according to IMDB.

Where the other Jurassic Park movies made?

Many of the filming locations in Kauai and Oahu were also used in the sequels, which – in order of release – are:

  • The Lost World: Jurassic Park (1997)
  • Jurassic Park III (2001)
  • Jurassic World (2015)
  • Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (2018)
  • Jurassic World Dominion (2022)

Kauai’s Na Pali Coast serves as the fictional Isla Sorna, also known as “Site B2, in The Lost World , while Kipu Kai on the island’s south-east side appears in the franchise’s second instalment, when the Bowman family are dining on the beach.

According to IMDB , the second film also used sites in California including Redwoods National Forest .

In Jurassic Park III , the final rescue scene features Kauai’s Pilaa Beach .

The first film in the Jurassic World trilogy that followed the original trio is also set on Isla Nublar and therefore filmed at Jurassic Kahili Ranch, Manawaiopuna Falls, Olokele Valley and the Blue Hole.

Jurassic World’s Sam Neill: ‘My career has been one accident after another’

Jurassic World's Sam Neill: 'My career has been one accident after another'

Na Pali Coast State Park (revamped as “the Garden Isle”), Manoa Falls and Honolulu Zoo served as new locations in Jurassic World .

The 2015 film reportedly featured Makai Research Pier in Oahu for the arrival of the Nublar ferry, Hawaii Convention Centre on Oahu as the fictional Hilton Isla Nublar Resort, and Hangar 79 at the Pearl Harbour Aviation Museum for the scene where the characters reunite in a big aeroplane hangar.

The spot where Owen, Claire and Franklin wash ashore in Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom is Halona Beach on Oahu, while the 2018 movie’s escape sequence was filmed in the island’s He’eia State Park .

Are there Jurassic Park locations in Europe?

Yes. In the latest instalment, 2022’s Jurassic World Dominion , some production moved to Europe. Many scenes were completed at Pinewood Studios in Buckinghamshire .

Malta was also used, ioncluding the capital, Valletta, and the fortified cities Floriana and Birgu .

Other Maltese locations included Għar Tuta cave in Mellieħa – representing a dig site supposedly in Utah – and St Lawrence’s Church in Vittoriosa .

The crew also filmed in at sites in British Columbia, Canada , including the city of Merritt and The Bridge Studios in Burnaby. There was also filming in Atlanta, Georgia , in the USA.

Can I visit the filming locations for Jurassic Park?

It is possible to visit or see plenty of the locations.

For the key sites on Oahu and Kauai, fly into Honolulu International Airport (HNL), and then connect to Lihue Airport (LIH) for the latter.

The ease of getting to some of the popular sites varies, with some accessible by road or sea but others only able to be viewed from afar, including by helicopter tours.

For example, the best way to see the Na Pali Coast is by water or air, with charter boat and helicopter tours available, while Manawaiopuna Falls sits on private property but can be seen by helicopter ride.

E-gate failure shows UK is unprepared for the EU’s new Entry/Exit scheme

E-gate failure shows UK is woefully unprepared for the EU's new Entry/Exit scheme

Jurassic Kahili Ranch is also on private property, with no tours available and strictly enforced trespassing rules.

Kauai’s Kipu Kai beach is accessible but best reached by boat, with charters available, while Pilaa Beach is also tricky to get to but accessible by a steep, rocky access trail.

Allerton Garden and Limahuli Garden and Preserve can be explored more easily, by guided and self-guided tours which can be booked ahead of time on their website.

To reach Hoopii Falls, meanwhile, it’s a 1.8-mile out-and-back hike considered to be a “moderately challenging route” .

On Oahu, Halona Beach can also be hiked to, while the starring Kualoa Ranch offers outdoor activities and tours of many of its popular filming sites by bus, boat, ATV and e-bikes.

Honolulu Zoo, which doubled as the Isla Nublar resort’s petting zoo in Jurassic World , is a popular tourist attraction that be found in Kapi’olani Regoinal Park, between Waikiki Beach and the Diamond Head State Monument, while the Hawaii Convention Centre in Oahu regularly hosts a wide range of events throughout the year.

He’eia State Park is on the windward side of Oahu, in Kaneohe, and the 18-acre site can be seen by self-guided walking tours, while Makai Research Pier is open to the public and offers whale watching and dinner cruises.

Meanwhile, the Pearl Harbour Aviation Museu m – where Hangar 79 is located – is of course open to visitors.

The Garden of Eden Arboretum and Botanic Garden in Maui features the Keōpuka Rock (“Jurassic Rock” in the first film) at the Keōpuka Rock Overlook, which can be hiked to by trail.

California’s Red Rock Canyon State Park is open for hiking and camping, while Universal Studios in California puts on tours.

The Griffith Observatory is located on the south slope of Mount Hollywood in Griffith Park, in the centre of metropolitan Los Angeles, and therefore easily accessible by public transport, walking, biking or driving, with paid parking available nearby and free parking downhill.

For fans of the later films, the various metropolitan filming sites in British Columbia can also be reached with relative ease, as can those in Malta.

Jurassic Park Fliming Locations: Kualoa Ranch, Oahu

Almost 30 years have passed since the original Jurassic Park film was released, and it's safe to assume that Steven Spielberg and Co. were confident they had a blockbuster on their hands. Some of the more optimistic studio execs might have foreseen a future with a massive franchise, merchandise, spin-offs, and theme park tie-ins, but it's still pretty surprising that all this time later fans are still wondering what's next following the conclusion of the second trilogy with 2022's Jurassic World Dominion .

Spoiler alert: There will be more movies.

Until the next project becomes a little clearer, though, fans can still enjoy and visit some of the films' major stars. The islands of Hawaii provided the backdrops that helped the mystical homes of dinosaurs come to life. Here are nine Jurassic Park filming locations you can visit on your next trip to Hawaii. Please note that some locations are on private property, so it's important to follow posted signs.

This spot may look familiar. Dubbed Hollywood's "backlot of Hawaii," Kualoa Ranch has served as the filming locations for several movies and TV shows, including Hawaii Five-0 , LOST , Kong: Skull Island and Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle . One of the most notable movies filmed here is the first Jurassic Park , and several scenes from Jurassic World and Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom were filmed here as well.

Jurassic Park sign at Kualoa Ranch

While being chased by dinosaurs, Grant and the kids took cover behind a fallen log, which almost wasn't part of the film. In 1992, production was forced to move from Kauai to Oahu for a few final scenes due to Hurricane Iniki. Had the storm not caused the location change, this famous fallen log would never have made its big screen debut. The log is a popular photo op on Kualoa Ranch's movie tours.

Jurassic Park Fliming Locations: Manawaiopuna Falls, Kauai

In an early scene of the first Jurassic Park , a helicopter lands at the base of a beautiful waterfall. You'll find this spot on Kauai—in fact, Manawaiopuna Falls is now commonly referred to as " Jurassic Park Falls." Want to recreate the scene? The site is located on private property and is only accessible via helicopter, so you'll need to take a tour with one of the helicopter companies that are permitted landing access, like Island Helicopters Kauai .

Jurassic Park Fliming Locations: Na Pali Coast, Kauai

In 1997's Lost World , Kauai's NaPali Coastline is shown as the fictional Isla Sorna, which is located approximately 90 miles from the fictional Isla Nublar.

Kipu Kai, Kauai

One of Kauai's beaches , Kipu Kai, is also featured in Lost World , and can be seen when the Bowmans are dining on the beach. Located on Kauai's southeastern side near Moleuhu, the beach is difficult to access and can only be reached via boat. To catch a glimpse of the area, take a Kipu Kai Ranch tour .

Pilaa Beach, Kauai

Jurassic Park III 's final rescue scene features Kauai's Pilaa Beach. This difficult-to-access beach is infrequently visited and not good for swimming. But if you brave the steep, rocky access trail you'll be rewarded with stunning views and solitude.

Jurassic Kahili Ranch, Kauai

Other scenes from Jurassic Park III were filmed at Jurassic Kahili Ranch , however the ranch is private property. No tours are available and the no trespassing rules are strictly enforced.

Jurassic Park Fliming Locations: Garden of Eden, Maui

For 2015's Jurassic World , the helicopter entrance scene was filmed on the north shore of Maui, near the Garden of Eden Arboretum .

Jurassic Park Fliming Locations: Makai Research Pier, Oahu

Also in Jurassic World , the Nublar ferry arrives on the Makai Research Pier , which is open to the public. The Navatek Boat that doubled for the ferry in the movie has since been retired, but you can whale watch or go for a dinner cruise on one of the company's newer vessels .

Jurassic Park Fliming Locations: Halona Beach, Oahu

In Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom , when Owen, Claire, and Franklin wash ashore after escaping a volcanic eruption and dinosaur stampede (because it wouldn't be a Jurassic Park movie without one!), the spot is Halona Beach . A steep, rocky hike is the price of admission, but the picturesque cove is worth it. Scenes from Pirates of the Caribbean 4: On Stranger Tides were also filmed here, though they called the spot Whitecap Bay.

As an added bonus, drive by 42-139 Old Kalanianaole Road on Oahu and see where Chris Pratt lived during filming.

One Jurassic World Project Is Perfect For Exploring Jurassic Park's Biggest Mystery

  • Explore the lore and mysteries surrounding Jurassic Park: Europe and Japan in Jurassic World Evolution 2 through new DLC features.
  • Take a deeper dive into unused concepts for the franchise and unreleased spinoff parks planned by John Hammond.
  • Keep the Jurassic World Evolution series evolving with updates, DLC, and potential sequels to engage fans and continue exploring the franchise.

The Jurassic World series has raised and answered plenty of fascinating questions within the franchise, but one of its projects is perfect for exploring one of Jurassic Park ’s biggest mysteries. Jurassic World Evolution and the games beyond it were all about possibilities, as players assumed control of the titular theme park. However, the games allow audiences more than the opportunity to create the Mesozoic menagerie of their dreams by literally building upon the lore surrounding them. With Jurassic World Evolution 2 releasing new content and further revisiting the Jurassic Park series, it’s about time the game disembarks for a new adventure in some of the most curious places that never were.

Considered a spiritual successor to the cult classic Jurassic Park: Operation Genesis , 2018’s Jurassic World Evolution is a business management and zoo simulation game inspired by the movies of the same name. Throughout several scenarios, campaigns, and sandbox modes, gamers were allowed to let their imaginations run wild while hoping to prevent their dinosaurs from doing the same.

Overwhelmingly popular with Jurassic Park enthusiasts, in 2021, Frontier Developments followed up Jurassic World Evolution with its sequel, Jurassic World Evolution 2 . The new game introduced new animals, mechanics, and, notably, a new campaign called "Chaos Theory," which explores the movies’ most iconic moments. Still supported by Frontier Developments and continuously evolving through new DLC packs and updates, their games continue to provide new possibilities for players while leaving eager audiences anticipating more as they await the release of Jurassic World 4 in 2025.

What Were Jurassic Park's Mysterious Islands?

  • While Jurassic Park's sister locations never saw fruition, a real-life exhibition, Jurassic Park Institute Tour, entertained audiences in Japan.

How To Play Every Main-Series Sims Game In 2024

The Jurassic Park series seems littered with "what ifs" and "what could’ve beens" as dinosaur enthusiasts rooted for the park to succeed. While Jurassic World would see this concept realized, what few realize is that the original park had global ambitions as a full-fledged franchise. Plans for attractions were in place, future locations were designated, and new technologies promised a new era as Jurassic Park aimed to establish itself as the premier tourist destination. Perhaps one of the biggest tragedies of John Hammond’s infamous project was how much potential was lost in its pursuit. While titles such as Jurassic Park: The Game , Jurassic World Evolution , and the upcoming Jurassic Park: Survival immerse audiences in captivating settings that extend beyond the movies, Jurassic Park: Europe and Jurassic Park: Japan continue to be among the most enigmatic aspects of the franchise.

While many of the Jurassic Park games took players to the Muertes Archipelago mentioned in the movies and novels, they have yet to transport players to the spinoff parks planned by John Hammond. In Michael Crichton’s original book, John Hammond refers to Jurassic Park: Europe and Jurassic Park: Japan, two future development projects but never realized. An obvious nod to Disney’s theme parks and how they expanded globally, there wasn’t much known about them or how InGen planned to build the parks for its Japanese and European locales, making it one of the most mysterious parts of the series.

Although Jurassic Park: Europe made a cameo appearance in the luncheon scene in Jurassic Park , Telltale Games bizarrely provided fans with the most insights into the events unfolding at the overseas parks. As part of the InGen Field Guide released with Jurassic Park: The Game Deluxe Edition set, the breakdown of Jurassic Park’s opening phases mentions "extensive plans in place" with the Portuguese government. Said to be located in the Azores islands, not much else was detailed about Jurassic Park: Europe or its sister location in Japan. However, with Telltale Games’ storytelling called into question by the canon of the Jurassic World movies and Jurassic Park: Survival , there’s no telling just how far John Hammond got in planning to make Jurassic Park an international brand, but it remains a subject of curiosity and speculation.

How Jurassic World Evolution Can Explore Jurassic Park: Europe And Japan

  • A canceled game, also entitled Jurassic Park: Survival, was set to explore a secret third island beyond Isla Nublar and Site B.

The Surprisingly Dark Lore Of Pokmon X And Y

While Jurassic World Evolution 2’s story mode doesn’t come with any profound insight or further understanding of the series, it does allow players to explore it from a different vantage point. More of a flight of fancy and an exercise in creativity, Frontier Developments’ games have made great use of Jurassic Park’s lore and unresolved plot threads to create scenarios for players to navigate. While the game features unique set pieces, dinosaur species, and storylines from all six Jurassic Park films and beyond, how many times can players return to Site B or Isla Nublar to revisit the events of those movies? There’s an opportunity to bring to life one of Jurassic Park’s biggest mysteries, and release one of Jurassic World Evolution 2’s most wanted DLC features. In addition, armchair park builders could grab the Triceratops by the horns to confront the challenges Jurassic Park: Europe and Jurassic Park: Japan would inevitably encounter.

Seemingly inspired by the DLC "Return to Jurassic Park," in the first game, Jurassic World Evolution 2 introduced "Chaos Theory," a series of campaigns meant to explore different film narratives if they went differently. Players attempt to make Jurassic Park successful, finally realize the creation of Jurassic Park: San Diego, and oversee Biosyn’s facilities from Jurassic World Dominion , among other challenges. For fans of the series and simulation games in general, the single-player narratives felt unique and fun and, in some cases, gave more closure to abandoned plot points than the movies did.

While a majority of the lore behind Jurassic Park: Japan and Jurassic Park: Europe seem thin enough to fit on the back of a postcard from a Jurassic World gift shop, it would make the perfect sequel to past "Chaos Theory" scenarios, allowing to see how John Hammond’s dream would’ve played out on a global stage. With challenges surrounding the need to design a park in line with different cultures, audiences, and climates, the whole "What if…?" aspect of "Chaos Theory" feels like the ideal stage for the untold story of Hammond’s unbuilt theme parks to play out with fans of the series at the helm.

Just as "Return to Jurassic Park" provided the content fans always wanted to see in the form of the aviary and new skins to reflect the classic setting, Jurassic Park: Europe and Jurassic Park: Asia could deliver something similar for the dinosaur-themed video game . Far removed from the Costa Rican islands and the esthetics of Isla Nublar, the European and Japanese setting would call for new building skins and decorations to reflect the surrounding areas.

Additionally, having mainly originated from the novels, players would appreciate new features inspired by them, such as the Pteratops Lodge for aviaries, the much-desired river safari, or even an apiary attraction that allows parks to display giant prehistoric insects similar to the dragonflies encountered by the protagonists. As it stands, there are a lot of ideas that neither Frontier Developments nor the Jurassic World franchise are doing anything with, and with a healthy dose of nostalgia, this could be the way to implement them.

Why Jurassic World Evolution 2 Needs To Keep Evolving

  • Other Jurassic Park sim titles include Jurassic Park III: Park Builder , Jurassic Park Builder , and Jurassic World: The Game .

Every Telltale's The Walking Dead Game, In Order

Jurassic World Evolution 2 and its DLC have come a long way, offering a plethora of new features while delivering one of the definitive dinosaur gaming experiences of all time. However, as the series progresses with titles like Jurassic World: Chaos Theory , Jurassic Park: Survival , and Jurassic World 4 , the Jurassic World Evolution series must continue to evolve. Updates, DLC, and maybe even a sequel for next-gen consoles all provide a path forward for Frontier Developments to take flight, taking their series to exciting new heights alongside the franchise that inspired them.

Despite Jurassic World Dominion billing itself as "the epic conclusion to the Jurassic era," it's evident that there are more stories to tell, ideas to explore, and a growing fan desire to engage with their favorite films, especially as modern consoles, TV, and movies continue to adapt nostalgic franchises. Gaming is a versatile medium that allows people to immerse themselves in iconic movie franchises like Terminator , Alien , and Indiana Jones while also expanding upon them in novel ways. While Jurassic World Evolution offers enticing avenues to delve deeper into John Hammond’s dream, its primary aim must be to continue answering the most profound question of them all: "What if…?"

Universal Shuts Down Renowned ‘Jurassic Park’ Attraction, ‘Warning’ Flags Installed as Technical Issues Continue

in Universal Orlando

Universal Orlando Resort recently closed down a famous and renowned Jurassic Park  attraction, and technical issues struck the ride in mid-April. Now, there seem to be some warning flags installed on the ride, as no opening date appears to be in sight.

Universal To Shut down ‘Jurassic Park’ Attraction Indefinitely: Updates Given

Pteranodon Flyers, a suspended family roller coaster within Universal’s Islands of Adventure in Orlando, Florida, forms part of the Jurassic Park-themed area’s Camp Jurassic section. Since its inauguration on May 28, 1999, this ride has offered patrons an exhilarating experience. With a duration of 1 minute and 15 seconds and a height restriction of 3 ft, riders enjoy comfortable seating suspended from a track above, affording them picturesque views as they glide through the air. The attraction swings riders below a track that traverses a small segment of Jurassic Park and is engineered to accommodate 170 individuals per hour.

However, as of April 21, 2024, Pteranodon Flyers has been shuttered indefinitely due to technical malfunctions, with no scheduled maintenance. The duration of the repairs remains to be determined. It will be due in April due to a technical issue , leaving visitors to speculate about the future of this beloved attraction. Universal Parks, like Universal Studios Hollywood, Universal Studios Florida, Universal Islands of Adventure, and others tend to be quick with repairing rides.

Recently, on social media, @OrlandoAmusmnt posted the above update, showing some type of red, possibly a warning, flag on the rides, indicating that the Universal team members were hard at work trying to fix the ongoing technical issues that led to the attraction closing down a few weeks back.

The addition of red flags on the Pteranodon Flyers attraction indicates Universal’s efforts to address the persistent technical issues plaguing the ride. By installing these warning flags, Universal aims to communicate to guests the potential hazards of the ride’s operation, thereby prioritizing visitor safety.

Moreover, the absence of an opening date suggests that the technical problems are complex and require extensive troubleshooting and repairs . With a definitive timeline for resolution, the ride could remain open indefinitely, potentially extending throughout the year.

This uncertainty leaves visitors disappointed and impacts the overall guest experience at Universal’s Islands of Adventure. Universal’s focus on resolving these issues promptly is crucial to restoring the attraction’s functionality and ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for park guests.

10 Movie Characters Who Could Survive Jurassic Park

Jurassic Park is far from a safe place to visit, but certain movie characters could thrive in the harsh environment better than most.

Isla Nublar is not a place for the faint of heart. The Central American Island hosts John Hammond's technological marvel, Jurassic Park . Although a true place of wonder and excitement, where guests get to interact with dinosaurs brought back from extinction, it has also proven to be a place filled with danger.

The hubris of park management often leads to the failure of security systems, allowing the prehistoric occupants to escape their enclosures and roam free over the island. In such situations, guests quickly become dinner for the colossal predators and must work out a way to survive and escape the island. It's not a task everyone is equipped for, but there are characters from movie history who possess the necessary skills for survival.

Evil Dead's Ash has Survived Much Worse

One thing to remember when facing the dinosaurs of Jurassic Park is simply being a good fighter won't serve any character too well when up against a 10,000-pound lizard. Luckily for Ash Williams, the one-line spitting protagonist from Sam Raimi's Evil Dead franchise, he's got more going for him than just that.

Throughout Evil Dead , Ash shows his determination and refusal to give up in the face of insurmountable, and demonic, odds. In Evil Dead II , Ash even takes losing an arm as an opportunity to better augment himself against his attackers. Always maintaining a can-do attitude and not giving up when all seems impossible are necessary traits for surviving Jurassic Park, combined with resourcefulness, make Ash a prime candidate to escape Isla Nublar.

Doc Brown Can Invent His Way Out of Any Situation

What happened to the first jurassic park: survival.

Doctor Emmett Brown is one of the least physical characters on this list, but he makes up for this shortfall with genius ingenuity. In Back to the Future , Doc Brown not only fashions a time machine in 1985 but is also able to recreate his invention using the technology of 1885.

Although he can seem panicked when put under pressure, it's in such a situation that he's able to come up with his best ideas. Using the technology on the island, Doc Brown could fashion quite a comfortable home for himself, choosing to stay there as long as he liked or coming up with an escape method if he was pushed to.

The Dude is Always Calm Under Pressure

Something that could be easy to forget when trapped in Jurassic Park is that the prehistoric creatures, for the most part, aren't trying to hunt or kill humans out of malice. There are plenty of predators, but they're also surrounded by far more of their natural prey than humans. In this light, perhaps the best way to survive on the island is to chill out and wait to be rescued.

There are few movie characters better qualified to take this approach than The Dude. A man who just floats through life minding his own business. The Big Lebowski shows The Dude wants for nothing greater in life and remains completely unphased by all the death and conspiracies happening around him. If he was stuck in Jurassic Park, he'd kick back, light up a joint, and mind his own business until he was rescued, letting all the dinosaurs do their thing.

Mad Max is Used to Harsh Conditions

Still, even without the dinosaurs actively seeking the humans out, it wouldn't take long for Isla Nublar to become an inhospitable place. Baked by the equatorial sun, without fresh goods shipments, the essential resources on the island would quickly become scarce. For such a situation, Mad Max, a man used to surviving the wasteland, is perfectly equipped.

Although Max might not get on with the park's electric cars, he'd make excellent use of the gas-powered jeeps, modifying them to survive both the terrain and the threat of dinosaur attacks. He'd never stay in one place, always scouring for more resources and making himself a challenge to hunt.

The Jungle is Rambo's Natural Habitat

One of the biggest challenges in surviving on Isla Nublar is adapting to its jungle environment. Normally, this is a place where the dinosaurs would have a natural advantage over humans, but that wouldn't be the case for John Rambo. Throughout his adventures, the Vietnam vet proved himself more comfortable in the jungle than in a city.

First Blood , in particular, highlights how much Rambo can use the environment to his advantage . Setting up traps and perfectly camouflaging himself with nothing more than a knife, Rambo could live in the jungle for weeks without issue. He still couldn't beat most dinosaurs in a straight fight, but Rambo might just be able to outhunt them.

Dinosaurs Are no Match for Ripley

The jurassic world franchise is making a huge mistake with jenna ortega.

After surviving as many Xenomorph attacks as Ellen Ripley , dinosaurs must feel like a relaxing walk in the park. Within the Alien universe, the Xenomorph is the perfect killing machine with acid blood and an intrinsic link between the creature's need to reproduce and kill, any encounter with one is a pure exercise in survival.

Ripley survived two encounters with the Xenomorphs and even took out a Xenomorph Queen with a loading mech. She had no formal combat training, and all her accomplishments came from a sheer natural will to survive and escape. That's the conviction needed to keep going on Isla Nublar and push through all the challenges it can throw up.

Doctor Dolittle Has a Unique Way to Defuse a Situation

As previously mentioned, the dinosaurs of Jurassic Park have no malice toward humans; it's a simple mix of nature that brings them into conflict. But if there is anyone who can bridge the gap between humans and dinosaurs, it would be the animal-loving veterinarian Doctor Dolittle.

In all of his film iterations, Dolittle is shown as being able to speak the languages of animals--he can communicate with them and seeks to use his gift to better understand them. Using this gift in Jurassic Park, surviving the island would become simple for Dolittle; his real challenge would be working out the best way to help the prehistoric creatures.

Tony Stark Could Fashion His Own Mode of Escape

This divisive steven spielberg movie has one of the best action scenes of the '90s.

The easiest way to survive Jurassic Park is to escape it as quickly as possible while being exposed to the least amount of risk. The Marvel Cinematic Universe's genius, billionaire, playboy, and philanthropist Tony Stark has proved himself well-equipped for this task, combining the ingenuity and resourcefulness of Doc Brown with the survival instincts and the cool under-pressure demeanor of someone like Ash Williams.

In Iron Man , Stark is able to fashion the Mark I Iron Man armor in a cave in the desert while in hostile conditions. If he could replicate it with the materials available on Isla Nublar, then he'd be home-free in no time. His only real challenge would be keeping his ego in check long enough not to tempt fate with the prehistoric predators roaming around.

Ethan Hunt is Versatile in Any Situation

Mission: Impossible's Ethan Hunt has continually shown there are no lengths that he wouldn't go to in order to complete his mission. If that mission is surviving and escaping Isla Nublar, that would surely only enhance his determination. Hunt has never been shown to have any special skills in the wilderness, but he's completely equipped to make use of whatever technology is left in the visitor areas.

Whether flying a plane or a helicopter or racing at breakneck speed in a car or on a motorcycle, Hunt will be able to make full use of whatever he finds to fashion his own escape. And if all else fails, he's the one character on this list with a fighting chance of outrunning a dinosaur.

Indiana Jones is the Master of Improvisation

When things start going wrong, and an improvised escape is needed, there are few better to turn to than the adventuring archaeologist Indiana Jones. Dinosaurs may be a bit older than the sort of things Dr. Jones is used to dealing with, but surviving Isla Nublar would require all the skills of improvisation and adventuring that he's proven so adept at.

In all of Indiana Jones' adventures, the titular archaeologist has proven himself at home in any environment and is always alert to the danger around him. Even when things don't go according to plan, he keeps a level head and finds a way out of whatever predicament he's gotten himself into. As long as there are no prehistoric snakes, Indiana Jones would survive his encounter with Jurassic Park without a hitch.

UChicago paleontologist Paul Sereno’s fossil lab moves to Washington Park

New facility includes space for fossil preparation, community programs, and specimens collected from worldwide expeditions.

Soon, residents of Chicago’s South Side won’t have to travel to the Field Museum to see a Tyrannosaurus rex skeleton—there will be one in their own backyard.

Paleontologist Paul Sereno’s Fossil Lab at the University of Chicago is moving to the center of the Washington Park neighborhood on South Wabash Avenue, just off Garfield Boulevard. The 6,000-square-foot facility opened May 2, transforming a 1921 wood-beam warehouse into a fossil wonderland.

“It’s a dream lab for paleontologists and archaeologists,” said Sereno, who is a professor of organismal biology and anatomy at UChicago. “It will be one of the largest labs of its kind in the world, one designed for high throughput of massive dinosaur skeletons.”

In addition to housing Sereno’s fossil specimens, the new lab is designed to welcome the neighborhood as well. Featuring a colorful dinosaur mural on the front of the building, the glass walls of the Prep Lab and the mobile work desks and projector screen of the central Learning Room aren’t just for scientists and research. Sereno will invite community groups, teachers, and students to tour the facility and use its spacious rooms for meetings, service training, in-school visits, and after-school programs.

“This is a game-changer for any kid in the neighborhood that dreamed of getting within arm’s reach of dinosaur bones,” said Sereno, who is readying the new lab to receive tons of new dinosaurs he and his team collected in the Sahara Desert on an excursion in the fall of 2022.

Washington Park Resident Advocacy Council President Cecilia Butler says neighborhood residents are excited to get up close with fossils in the new lab. “It’s wonderful to be part of the work and see and feel things like we see on science shows on TV,” Butler said. “Paul is giving us an opportunity to be hands on and everyone in the community is extremely excited.”

The Prep Lab in the new facility is what Sereno calls his “bone makerspace,” featuring an array of tools and microscopes for cleaning, stabilizing, and protecting fossils. Fossil technicians with decades of experience will guide college students, volunteers, and high school interns in their work on unique fossils collected by Sereno’s team around the world. It’s all hands-on work with bones, fossil and recent, to recompose skulls and skeletons.

The lab’s Learning Room is a large multi-purpose resource room for researchers, college students, and teens in after-school programs. Its large projector screen, movable workstations, and 3D printers facilitate interactive learning. It can also host community meetings or even film screenings. As a dramatic touch, skeletons of living birds, mammals, and alligators hang from the ceilings—created as final projects in one of Sereno’s college classes.

The facility will ramp up what Sereno can achieve in research output, he says. It’s arranged on one floor with a wide freight entrance, meaning staff can move large specimens with ample workspace. “Everything will be more efficient in the new space,” Sereno said. He has a backlog of fossils stored in field jackets in another warehouse, a haul he estimates at more than 50 tons.

Rev. Jesse Knox III, Senior Minister at the Church of the Good Shepherd and Executive Director of the Good Shepherd Community Services Organization in Washington Park, said the timing for the lab is a perfect complement to other new developments on the South Side.

“Bringing amenities to the whole area is crucial to have a vibrant community,” he said. “It signals the beginning that other good things are coming to the neighborhood. Introducing young kids to get excited about science in a hands-on, positive environment has been needed for a long time. Excitement is an understatement.”

Contributing to the neighborhood scene is equally exciting to Sereno and his team.

“For teens, the possibilities are endless. We’ll have a Jurassic Park show, surrounded by gigantic bones, and talk dinosaur science,” Sereno said. “I’m thrilled to operate a science lab in a neighborhood. It’s just off the main drag and soon a recognized landmark when the dinosaurs arrive.”
