Snorkel and dive amongst vibrant coral gardens; kayak in secluded bays with hundreds of fish teeming below; and engage with local villagers and learn about their daily lives, music and crafts. Plus, experience the innovative melting pot that is Singapore—a spectacular blend of cultures, innovation, and beauty. Additional highlights include a visit to the Borobudur Temple, the largest Buddhist temple in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage site; and exploring the jungles of West Bali Barat National Park and Menjangan Island.
The 102-guest Nat Geo Orion acts as floating basecamp during these Tuamotu Islands cruises. Main Jewels of The Java Sea: An Exploration Between Bali & Singapore Itinerary
The main, southbound Bali and Singapore cruise from Singapore to Bali, Indonesia, begins with an overnight in Singapore, then embarks and cruises along remote Indonesian islands before disembarking in Bali, Indonesia.
Arrive in Singapore and transfer to the Fullerton Hotel (or similar). Meet your fellow travelers this evening at a welcome reception.
Fullerton Hotel (or similar)
This morning, check out of the hotel and set off to explore this landmark city-state. Cosmopolitan Singapore, a former British colony, has transformed itself into one of the world’s leading and most innovative commercial centers. While touring the old sections of the city, see how Chinese, Malay and Indian cultures thrive side by side. Also see the ultra-modern along the skyline of high rises and in the whimsical creations of the Gardens by the Bay. Singapore is truly a melting pot of culture, style and cuisine. This afternoon, embark the ship.
National Geographic Orion
breakfast, lunch, dinner
The first stop is in the remote Anambas Archipelago, to snorkel the unspoiled reefs surrounding Pulau Lintang. Search for colorful giant clams and cardinalfish that make these waters their home. The island is private, so enjoy exclusive access to walk the beach, dive, snorkel, or choose to explore by glass-bottom Zodiac.
The remote Badas Islands offer excellent beaches and corals. These rarely visited islands offer an abundant array of marine life. Watch clownfish darting between anemones and with luck, a beautiful royal blue tang might make this idyllic story complete! Explore above and beneath the sea via stand-up paddleboard, snorkeling and beachcombing.
Located off the coast of Sumatra, Belitung is part of the relatively unknown Bangka-Belitung sister islands. Spend the morning cruising the pristine waters, the ship weaving her way through the smaller islands and clusters of granite formations that dot the coastline, looking for the perfect quiet cove to stop in for kayaking and snorkeling. Ashore have the opportunity to meet the locals and witness the blending of the Sumatran, Malay and Bugis cultures—Malay homes on stilts; Bugis fishing villages; Sumatran coffee houses, popular gathering spots for all. The Dutch tin mines and the promise of work brought many families to Belitung—the mines may be gone, but the joining together of traditions remain.
One of the world’s most beautiful and powerful volcanoes, Krakatoa or Krakatau, was known worldwide after the explosive eruption in 1883. Ash from the massive event circled the earth for years. Along the Pacific Ring of Fire, new volcanoes have formed beneath Krakatoa’s caldera–Anak Krakatau, or “Child of Krakatau,” is the most active. Go ashore to explore the black sand beach and lush jungle that rises up to the volcano. Cruise to Legon Cabe, Big Krakatau, and snorkel in the dazzling reefs that surround the island. The following day spend time on deck with the team of naturalists, listen to compelling presentations in the lounge, or enjoy one of the many onboard amenities as the ship travels down the coast of Java.
Today, dock on the island of Java in the bustling port of Semarang. The day’s destination is inland, at the largest Buddhist temple in the world: magnificent Borobudur Temple. A UNESCO World Heritage site, this massive complex sits perched on a hill, with bell-shaped stupas housing statues of Buddha seeming to rise from the jungle around it. Stone reliefs carved in exquisite detail line the base of the temple, depicting everyday life and the path to enlightenment. Spend the full day exploring this spectacular site.
A breathtaking chain of coral fringed islands, Kerimun Jawa Archipelago sits off the coast of central Java. Designated a Natural Reserve, the marine park protects the biodiversity of the lush mangrove forests teeming with birdlife, 11 species of sea grass, and extensive coral reefs, home to over 400 species of fish. Observe life in the mangroves while trekking deep into the forest on raised footpaths, ever watchful for black-tailed monkeys and red breasted parakeets. Kayak along the sea grass in water so clear it’s easy to see the fish and coral below. A true island paradise.
Pulau Bawean is a small jewel in the Java sea. Travel past the beautifully terraced rice paddies while heading to the center of the island and Lake Kastoba. According to ancient lore, a swim in these pristine waters will keep you forever young. Curious monkeys and a variety of birds make their home in the surrounding jungle. Local villagers eagerly share their traditional music and dance.
Javanese for “deer,” Menjangan Island is named after the rare rusa deer who swim to the island during the spring. This secluded paradise is part of the West Bali Barat National Park, located in the northwest tip of Bali. Teeming with untouched beauty both above and below the water, explore the island on foot, keeping an eye out for deer while wandering through the ancient white stone temple – Pura Segara Gili Kencana; snorkel amongst the brightly colored coral fans; or glide through the clear water on a stand-up paddleboard.
This morning, arrive in Denpasar on the lush island of Bali, one of the world’s greatest cultural treasures. Following disembarkation, get a taste of this paradise, where life and art are interwoven. Following lunch transfer to the airport for your flight home.

Airlie Beach (Queensland)
A tiny, palm-dotted, walkable town and a magnet for backpackers, divers, and sunseekers — Airlie Beach is a vibrant, hostels-cafés-and-beachwear-shops-filled gateway.

What we know about the container ship that crashed into the Baltimore bridge
- The ship that crashed into the Francis Scott Key Bridge on Tuesday was the Singapore-flagged Dali.
- The container ship had been chartered by Maersk, the Danish shipping company.
- Two people were recovered from the water but six remain missing, authorities said.
A container ship crashed into a major bridge in Baltimore early Tuesday, causing its collapse into the Patapsco River.
A livestream showed vehicles traveling on the Francis Scott Key Bridge just moments before the impact at 1:28 a.m. ET.
Baltimore first responders called the situation a "developing mass casualty event" and a "dire emergency," per The Associated Press.
James Wallace, chief of the Baltimore Fire Department, said in a press conference that two people had been recovered from the water.
One was uninjured, but the other was transported to a local trauma center in a "very serious condition."
Wallace said up to 20 people were thought to have fallen into the river and some six people were still missing.
Richard Worley, Baltimore's police chief, said there was "no indication" the collision was purposeful or an act of terrorism.
Wes Moore, the governor of Maryland, declared a state of emergency around 6 a.m. ET. He said his office was in close communication with Pete Buttigieg, the transportation secretary.
"We are working with an interagency team to quickly deploy federal resources from the Biden Administration," Moore added.
Understanding why the bridge collapsed could have implications for safety, in both the shipping and civil engineering sectors.
The container ship is the Singapore-flagged Dali, which is about 984 feet long, and 157 feet wide, per a listing on VesselFinder.
An unclassified Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency report said that the ship "lost propulsion" as it was leaving port, ABC News reported.
The crew notified officials that they had lost control and warned of a possible collision, the report said, per the outlet.
The Dali's owner is listed as Grace Ocean, a Singapore-based firm, and its manager is listed as Synergy Marine, which is also headquartered in Singapore.
Shipping news outlet TradeWinds reported that Grace Ocean confirmed the Dali was involved in the collapse, but is still determining what caused the crash.
Related stories
Staff for Grace Ocean declined to comment on the collision when contacted by Business Insider.
"All crew members, including the two pilots have been accounted for and there are no reports of any injuries. There has also been no pollution," Synergy Marine said in a statement.
The company did not respond to a request for further comment from BI.
'Horrified'
Maersk chartered the Dali, with a schedule for the ship on its website.
"We are horrified by what has happened in Baltimore, and our thoughts are with all of those affected," the Danish shipping company said in a statement.
Maersk added: "We are closely following the investigations conducted by authorities and Synergy, and we will do our utmost to keep our customers informed."
Per ship tracking data, the Dali left Baltimore on its way to Colombo, the capital of Sri Lanka, at around 1 a.m., about half an hour before the crash.
The Port of Baltimore is thought to be the largest in the US for roll-on/roll-off ships carrying trucks and trailers.
Barbara Rossi, associate professor of engineering science at the University of Oxford, told BI the force of the impact on one of the bridge's supporting structures "must have been immense" to lead to the collapse.
Dr Salvatore Mercogliano, a shipping analyst and maritime historian at Campbell University, told BI: "It appears Dali left the channel while outbound. She would have been under the control of the ship's master with a Chesapeake Bay pilot onboard to advise the master.
"The deviation out of the channel is probably due to a mechanical issue as the ship had just departed the port, but you cannot rule out human error as that was the cause of the Ever Forward in 2022 just outside of Baltimore."
He was referring to the incident two years ago when the container ship became grounded for a month in Chesapeake Bay after loading up cargo at the Port of Baltimore.
The US Coast Guard found the incident was caused by pilot error, cellphone use, and "inadequate bridge resource management."
Claudia Norrgren, from the maritime research firm Veson Nautical, told BI: "The industry bodies who are here to protect against incidents like this, such as the vessel's flag state, classification society, and regulatory bodies, will step in and conduct a formal investigation into the incident. Until then, it'll be very hard for anyone to truly know what happened on board."
This may not have been the first time the Dali hit a structure.
In 2016, maritime blogs such as Shipwreck Log and ship-tracking site VesselFinder posted videos of what appears to be the stern of the same, blue-hulled container vessel scraping against a quay in Antwerp.
A representative for the Port of Antwerp told BI the Dali did collide with a quay there eight years ago but couldn't "give any information about the cause of the accident."
The Dali is listed as being built in 2015 by Hyundai Heavy Industries in South Korea.

Photos released from on board the Dali ship as officials investigate Baltimore bridge collapse
Federal authorities have released images taken on board the Dali ship as crews work to remove the remnants and wreckage of the Francis Scott Key Bridge from the Patapsco River.
The photos, taken and released on Wednesday by the National Transportation Safety Board, show investigators working on board the vessel and deploying a drone to capture aerial footage of the area.
Authorities are aiming to clear the wreckage in order to recover the bodies of four construction workers and clear the waterway so the Port of Baltimore can resume operations.
A massive shipping vessel lost power and smashed into the bridge Tuesday morning, causing it to collapse in seconds and sending eight construction workers into the water. Two survived and officials said the others were presumed dead by Tuesday evening. On Wednesday, rescuers found the bodies of two men trapped in a red pickup around the bridge's middle span, Butler said.
The piles of wreckage in the water, as well as the 984-foot-long cargo ship, forced authorities to shut down the Port of Baltimore, which handles more cars and farm equipment than any other port in the nation. Maryland Gov. Wes Moore, speaking about the facility where $80 billion in foreign cargo transited last year, called it "a global crisis."

The Dali container ship underwent "routine engine maintenance" at the port before it set out on a weekslong journey to Sri Lanka, lost power and crashed into the bridge, U.S. Coast Guard Rear Admiral Shannon Gilreath said at a news conference Wednesday.

Cargo ship that hit Baltimore bridge was involved in Antwerp collision in 2016
The Dali was reportedly detained in Belgium after scraping side of quay and significantly damaging part of hull in good weather
- How Baltimore’s Key Bridge collapsed – a visual guide
The same vessel that hit the Baltimore Francis Scott Key Bridge on Tuesday, destroying it and sending people and vehicles tumbling into the water, was also involved in a collision while leaving the port of Antwerp, Belgium, in 2016.
According to Vessel Finder and the maritime incident archive Shipwrecklog, the Dali – a 948ft (290-meter) cargo ship with a capacity of 10,000 containers – was leaving the container terminal of Antwerp heading to Bremerhaven.
As it did so, its bow reportedly swung around, causing the stern to scrape the side of the quay, significantly damaging several meters of the hull.
The ship was reportedly detained by authorities afterward and docked in Deurganckdok, Belgium . There were reportedly no injuries or adverse pollution.
According to Vessel Finder , the weather was fine at the time, and the incident was reportedly blamed on the ship’s master and pilot on board.
What are flags of convenience?
A ship flying a flag of convenience means the owner has registered the vessel in a country other than their own. The ship flies the ensign or flag of that country, known as the flag state and operates under its laws, typically laxer than the owner’s own.
For a ship owner, the advantage of this arrangement includes comparatively fewer regulations, lower employment requirements, and thus cheaper labour, cheaper registration fees and lower or no taxes.
For crew members, the disadvantages tend towards lower working standards, fewer rights and little protection. They are opposed by the International Transport Workers' Federation.
Panama, which has the largest ship registry globally, followed by Liberia, operates an “open registry”, allowing foreign owners to register ships under its flag. It guarantees anonymity to the owners, making it difficult for them to be held to account.
The practice began in the 1920s in the US, when owners of cruise ships registered their vessels in Panama so that they could serve their passengers alcohol during Prohibition.
Karen McVeigh , senior reporter
It is unclear what crew were aboard the ship. Vessel Finder said at the time that the ship, which was built in South Korea in 2015 by Hyundai Heavy Industries, was owned by the Greek company Oceanbulk Maritime but was chartered by Maersk.
The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) confirmed on Tuesday that the Dali was registered in Singapore and had 22 crew on board, with Maersk adding in a statement that the crew were all Indian but none of them were Maersk crew or personnel. It said the ship was operated by the charter vessel company Synergy Group.
Maersk has been approached for comment.
About 2.6km (1.6 miles) of the Baltimore bridge collapsed on Tuesday when the Dali crashed into it, causing a number of vehicles to fall into the Patapsco River below. At least seven people were being searched for with two rescued, including one in critical condition, officials said on Tuesday at a pre-dawn press conference.

China reports more trips by foreign travellers in first 2 months of 2024 as visa-free policies take effect
- Foreigners make 2.95 million trips to and from China in January and February, more than double the amount in the previous two-month period
- Tourism ministry official notes uptick in visitors from countries covered by new visa rules, including France, Germany, Spain, Malaysia and Singapore
In the first two months of 2024, foreign passport holders made 2.95 million trips to or from China, a notable increase due in part to the country's new visa-free entry policies , according to an official from the Ministry of Culture and Tourism.
Shi Zeyi, deputy director of the ministry's bureau of international exchange and cooperation, said on Friday that the figure was 2.3 times more than in the November-December period and 41.5 per cent of pre-pandemic levels.
"During the Spring Festival period, the effect of China's visa-free entry policy showed and there was an increase in tourists from France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, Malaysia and Singapore," Shi said, referring to the Lunar New Year holiday in February.

From February to April, Germany's TUI Cruises will bring more than 10,000 tourists to China.
On March 10, the international cruise ship Zuiderdam, operated by Holland America Line, brought 2,013 tourists from 47 countries to the port of Dalian in northeast China. It was the first time a large cruise ship has visited northern China since 2019, Shi said.
In recent months, China has granted a series of visa exemptions to foreign travellers to encourage inbound travel as the country faces a tourism slump amid an economic downturn.
In November, China expanded its visa-free transit policy to Norway , bringing the number of countries covered to 54.
Citizens from these countries do not need a visa to enter China as long as they have booked an onward ticket to a third country or region.
Those passing through the cities of Changsha, Guilin and Harbin may stay for up to 72 hours, while those transiting through 20 other cities - including Beijing and Shanghai - may stay for up to 144 hours.
During that time, travellers are allowed to engage in tourist and business activities.
Foreign visitor numbers yet to reach China's pre-pandemic levels, data shows
In December, China started allowing travellers from France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain and Malaysia to enter the country without a visa for 15 days for business, tourism, family visits and transit.
A mutual visa exemption agreement between China and Singapore came into effect on February 9, which was Lunar New Year's Eve. The agreement allows citizens of the two countries to travel, visit family and go on business trips for up to 30 days.
