Missed a call from “Travelex Head Office” an hour before I was due to collect currency asking me to ring them - had to look up their number on the internet as the caller didn’t leave it! Currency not available (Friday) and wouldn’t be in until Tuesday at 3pm……our flight leaves on Tuesday at 10am. Order had been placed 10 days earlier. Asked for a refund - that will take 2 to 10 working days - not only do I not have currency but I now don’t have the money (£700) to try and buy it elsewhere. I always normally use Tesco and this was the first and last time I will use Asda.

Similar to lots of other travellers had paid for annual insurance with Asda, but when I had to claim in March 2020 for cancellation due to Covid was eventually declined despite policy saying clearly.that I was covered. Still waiting resolution to my complaints 6 months later. Now with the Ombudsman which is also a lengthy process due to volume of work.

Asda travel money is disgusting

Asda travel money is disgusting ! They take pretty much £200 worth of your money for exchange . I also had a problem where the lady at the till didn't type in my email right at the Shoeburyness store , so I couldn't activate my card . Further to this I rang customer service spoke to one women who couldn't speak a word of English and she said she had changed email and id be able to log on . When I ended phone I couldn't log on . Rang again spoke to another women who couldn't speak English and she said the other lady had changed it to a complete different email . Absolute messers

bad exchange rates and IT system not working

Tried to sell foreign currency (buyback) to Asda travel money. First, I was told to visit after 10am as their system starts then. Then, I was told their system is down and asked to leave my mobile number and they would call me back when it's working. They never call me. Their rates was bad too. Finally, I sold my foreign notes to the Post office, which has a far better exchange rate and staff are more friendly and helpful.

money taken quickly, no service...

Asda Travel, part of Asda group is in fact a separate travel agent called www.ppassociates.co.uk and using hotels from www.hotelbeds.com, the transaction process is all confusing, as you won't know who takes the money. When it comes to the service, I'd give is 0 stars if I could, as with so many companies involved, getting help is taking months, so I'd advise anyone to stay away, unless you want to pay for a booking you won't use and drag refunds for months...

Shamefully bad customer service

Shamefully bad customer service! I purchased the platinum level cover on an annual policy, thinking that a massive company like ASDA would offer a reasonably good policy. WRONG! My claim was fairly simple and I followed all the correct procedures and submitted all the documents they asked for. Nearly 2 months later my claim has still not been settled and my emails and calls are not responded to. I will be finding out who the ombudsman is and reporting this to them. Absolutely DISGUSTING service - obviously WILL NEVER USE AGAIN!

Took out Asda travel , my flight was cancelled by the airline, less than 24 hours home from Alicante, , myself and 2 friends , thought no problem , we have insurance, WRONG, will only pay you the extra money to get home, which was over £100 each, will only compensate, IF, the flight had been cancelled leaving the UK, What good is that, I would just have gone home, not stranded in SPAIN, would not Buy there insurance again, for anything. You ask all the questions befor e purchase , which I did on the phone, only to be told YES you are covered WRONG,

Which was after the date of the that we should of travelled) another guy said it was to late. A total con. Never use Asda travel insurance.

Dreadful, no consideration

Not great, was able to collect after 3pm today from the Norwich Store, after paying on line 2 days previously. Travelled to store to find Kiosk closed, no information available. Advised by store member that a few people had been in but unable to help and no contact details on kiosk, it is closed more than it is open. Came home and called, only to be advised would have to refund but this wold be 3- working days, bearing in mind they had my money for 2 days already, not happy. Then said would be 1 working day but obviously nothing yet so I have to find the money to purchase currency for holiday on Sunday!! AVOID!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Awful experience and this is the second…

Awful experience and this is the second time but with a different member of staff. I used them because ASDA are endorsing them by allowing g them to wear asda lanyards and using the asda name as part of their name. - asda money exchange bureau. When mistakes are made and these are too often to be accidental, asda refuses to accept responsibility and says they are a different company. The cashiers themselves give you incorrect rates after saying they’ll match the better rates in nearby money shops yet give their own and only after handing over the receipt and you notice the worst rate, they then say that mistakes can’t be rectified. Poor old people would believe they have the better rate as in both occasions the cashiers repeatedly said they’d given the better rate but hadn’t. The cashiers become rude when you ask them to rectify their rates.

Definitely a Travel Insurer to be careful of

Two issues in hindsight. In February 2020 bought insurance for a holiday bought in January 2020. All our holidays are none starters now so rang customer service. Told our insurance is no good for anything linked to Covid-19 and if we did go on holiday later this year and caught the virus and needed hospital care we would have to pay it all ourselves. We are over 70 years old so you can imagine the stress and financial burden this would cause. I used them last year and realised in February they had auto renewed our policy and I know I had not opted for this. I did get a refund on that Not a good insurer

Asda Insurance by Asda Money: Policy Details & More

Asda logo

As well as being a well-known British supermarket, which also has its own clothing and home range, Asda also sells various financial services, including insurance. Through Asda Money, Asda offers travel insurance and pet insurance, as well as giving customers access to its own price comparator for home and car insurance. Intrigued by the idea of Asda Insurance? We have everything you need to know, including policy details, reviews and contact information, right here. Read on now to find out more.

Asda Insurance

Asda Insurance forms a part of the greater financial services offered by the famous British supermarket brand Asda. Under the sub-brand Asda Money , the company sells a variety of financial products, including credit cards, travel money, personal loans, money transfer services and insurance.

History of Asda

Before looking in more detail at the insurance policies offered by Asda Money, let’s take a little look at its parent company, Asda, and how it got to where it is today: one of the biggest supermarket chains in the UK.

The brand Asda was founded in 1965 when the Asquith brothers and the Associated Dairies company joined together. Before this union, the Asquith brothers were already the proud owners of the UK’s first self-service supermarket called Queens. This was soon turned into a chain and formed the foundation for the future Asda brand.

Ever wondered where the name Asda came from? Take the AS of the surname Asquith, and the DA from the company name Associated Dairies, and you have it: ASDA.

After the partnership and official creation of the Asda brand, the Asda stores thrived. Based on the principle of offering customers the best value for money , the company expanded its discounted products beyond food, introducing general merchandise, a clothing brand and opening the first discounted petrol station. Over the years it took its non-food business even further, launching its home brand and selling financial services like insurance under Asda Money.

In 2018, Asda and another famous British supermarket, Sainsbury’s, announced their proposal to merge, but the deal was shut down by the Competition and Markets Authority. If successful, it would have given the two companies around a 30% share of the UK’s grocery market.

  • 1965 - The Asquith brothers join with Associated Dairies to create Asda.
  • 1966 - The company acquires all GEM stores in the UK and start to sell general merchandise as well as food products.
  • 1970 - There are over 30 Asda stores in theUK.
  • 1977 - Asda launches its first TV adverts containing the now famous pocket tap.
  • 1981 - The 100th ASDA store is opened.
  • 1989 - Asda teams up with designer George Davies who creates a range of clothing for the store called George at Asda.
  • 1996 - It launches its tickled pink campaign to help fight cancer and also opens its first Asda pharmacy.
  • 1999 - Asda joins the big American Walmart family.
  • 2000 - It creates its non-food online business.
  • 2008 - The company opens its first eco store; it used recycled bricks from Liverpool docks to build the structure.
  • 2012 - Asda opens the UK’s first drive-thru click and collect.
  • 2014 - George home is launched.

Fun fact! Over time, the pocket tap has become so intertwined with the supermarket that it is now the official sign for Asda in sign language.

Asda Money: what insurance does it offer?

an insured living room

Asda Insurance is sold under the brand name Asda money. While Asda offers some insurance policies directly, for some types of insurance they simply offer a price comparison service . With working partnership with around 50 insurance providers and brokers, this service lets customers compare the prices and content of different policies and find a good match for them.

Home insurance

Until the start of September 2019, Asda sold home insurance directly. It had two main policies:

  • Standard Home Insurance - as the name suggests, this was the basic policy that provided essential cover. As with most insurance policies, there was always the option to add cover on if you wished, allowing you to create a policy that suited your needs.
  • Superior Home Insurance - this was Asda’s more comprehensive home insurance policy. With more things included as standard, it offered greater cover but less flexibility in the cover you could choose.

As of September 2019, Asda Insurance is no longer selling home insurance directly. If you have an existing Asda home insurance policy, it will remain valid until the end date stated in your policy documents. To find out more about the previous policies, read our Asda home insurance guide (coming soon).

Instead of selling its own home insurance, Asda now offers a home insurance price comparison service that helps customers compare home insurance policies offered by different providers.

Car insurance

The same is true for car insurance : Asda Insurance does not sell its own car insurance policies, but its car insurance price comparison service lets you compare standard car insurance, as well as van insurance, motorhome, motorbike and caravan insurance all online.

You can, however, purchase breakdown cover through Asda Money. The service is provided by Britannia Rescue and comes in three levels of cover:

  • Roadside Cover - this covers you for breakdowns anywhere in the UK, but you are limited to six call outs a year.
  • UK Breakdown Cover - this includes home assistance cover (e.g. if your car won’t start on your drive), and will take your car to a local garage when you break down.
  • European Breakdown Cover - this has the same benefits as UK breakdown cover, but extends them to apply when you are driving in Europe, not just the UK.

Find out more about Asda breakdown cover and its car insurance price comparison tool in Selectra’s guide to Asda car insurance (coming soon).

Travel insurance

Unlike car insurance and home insurance, Asda Insurance actually sells its own travel insurance , meaning you can buy travel insurance directly from Asda online.

a first aid kit

There are three levels of cover available:

All options can be purchased as either a single trip policy or as an annual multi-trip policy. As an extra bonus, if you take out an annual multi-trip policy, winter sports cover is included as standard. You can also purchase the policies as a family travel insurance if you wish. The level of cover best suited for you depends on your individual circumstances and the extent of protection you feel you need. Find out more in our Asda travel insurance guide.

Pet insurance

Asda Insurance also sells three types of pet insurance policies directly to customers.

  • Lifetime - this policy ensures your pet is covered for the duration of his/her lifetime, as long as you renew the policy every year and keep up with your payments. Pertaining to certain conditions, your pet will stay covered for any ongoing or future illnesses during this time. This policy comes in three different coverage levels: Lifetime £2,000; Lifetime £4,000; Lifetime £10,000.
  • 12 months - the 12 month policy covers vet fees (up to £2,000 or £5,000) for a conditions for 12 months after the condition has been diagnosed.
  • Accident only - this protects your pet when they have a have a little accident, such as break a bone or cut their paw. This is the cheapest option out of the three but obviously doesn’t cover your pet for illness and disease.

If you have more than two pets, you can get a discount on your pet insurance with Asda Insurance through its multi-pet discount offer.

Asda Insurance contact details

If you have an existing insurance policy with Asda and would like to make a claim or issue a complaint, you can find the Asda contact details you need in our individual Asda insurance guides:

  • For a home insurance claim or complaint, head to our Asda home insurance guide .
  • For a claim or complaint regarding car insurance, visit our Asda car insurance guide .
  • For a travel insurance claim or complaint, you can find the contact details you need in our Asda travel insurance guide .

For Asda pet insurance, we have listed the relevant phone numbers in the table below.

General queries

For all general questions and queries, you can contact Asda Money by sending an email to [email protected] . Asda will aim to get back to you within three working days. If you would prefer to reach out by post, you can send a letter to the following address.

Send documents to:

Asda Money Asda House Great Wilson Street Leeds LS11 5AD

Asda Insurance login

When reviewing insurance companies, we always check to see if they offer an online account system through which customers can manage their insurance policies. This service makes everything a bit easier if you want to change something about your policy, or simple just view your policy documents.

While Asda Money does have an online account system, it is only available for credit card, money transfer and corporate gift card customers. There is no Asda online account for insurance customers.

Asda Insurance review

As a whole, there are not that many customer reviews of Asda left online. Furthermore, it is very hard to find customer reviews of Asda Insurance specifically. On review sites such as Truspilot, the whole Asda company (supermarket and financial services) are grouped together.

These reviews are not too helpful for us in trying to see what customers think of Asda Insurance, but we did notice that quite a few bad complaints left on Trustpilot were about Asda’s customer service.

Terrible approach, zero customer skills and poor resolution! Sort your act out Asda Money...there’s a lot of competition out there and your frontline are not customer obsessed! Nik

While this says nothing as to the quality of Asda’s insurance policies or price comparison service, it does suggests that sometimes the company’s quality of customer service can be lacking, which is something that could affect Asda Insurance customers.

If you are interested in taking out a certain Asda Insurance policy , you can find more detailed reviews, including price comparisons and what the professionals think of the policies, in the relevant Selectra Asda insurance guide: Asda home insurance, Asda car insurance and Asda travel insurance.

Please don’t buy this. My mother feel ill in Vietnam and had to travel there to bring her back. They stressed the whole situation rather than sorting it out. Customer service is on a level that is so bad it is difficult to express. I can not advise you strongly enough not to buy this.

“I had a Heart Attacj”

written by CharlesGLM on 24/09/2017

I had a Heart Attack in Athens and I cannot thank ASDA Travel Insurance enough for what happened next The hotel sent me to a private clinic. I have no idea how much it cost because the clinic dealt directly with ASDA Travel Insurance We had quite an expensive hotel, it was a great deal when I booked it on the internet months ago but when we asked to stay longer it was at normal rates. Again no idea how much it cost because ASDA Travel Insurance paid that bill too Normally one can fly 10 days after an angioplasty, although the doctor had given me permission to fly the insurance company wanted one more test done first. The result, another few days in Athens at their expense Finally they sent a doctor to accompany me home Business Class BA, with an ambulance to bring me to my door from the airport On top of this they covered my wife’s hotel bill whilst I was in the hospital and paid for her flight too You never really know how good insurance is until you need it. In the case of ASDA Travel Insurance, they were brilliant. I had no fuss and no stress Thank you ASDA, you made things so much easier

“Long wait to confirm cover”

written by GrantB1975 on 01/09/2017

ASDA left me waiting 10 days in a Russian hospital wondering whether they would honor my policy or find some excuse to refuse it before eventually confirming that they would honor it. Obviously its great that they did finally confirm they would provide cover, but 10 days is a long wait, and in fact the hospital told me its the longest they can remember waiting for an insurance company to confirm cover. 10 days of worry and stress about paying my medical bills is far too long, other insurers take 3-5 days according to the hospital I was in.

Lost a case when flying from Birmingham to Alicante. Called their claim number, after twenty minutes gave up. Tried email, no answer. Called sales line, they answered straight away, surprise, surprise?. Case finally arrived 2 days later, but still no reply from Asda. Thank God we didn't have an emergency!, useless avoid at all costs.

£500 out of picket after a delay in Dubai, due to Emirates Airline. Emirates wont refund because "exceptional" circumstances out of their control. Tried to claim on travel insurance. Got £80 back for a family of four, delayed by over 2 days on return home. They will do anything to get out of paying. Avoid this insurance company - the worse I've ever used

written by Walshgu92 on 18/01/2017

Total and utter rubbish, was due to fly out my brother a week before my flight had to have emergency heart operation suffered a stroke whilst in surgery sadly died few days later aged 50. Obviously I could not travel with the added stress of telling his two young children arranging funeral etc I had to contact Asda travel They needed all documentation flight tickets travel insurance ref no show letter death certificate. OH and then to I NEEDED to go to my late brothers GP to get a letter that stated my brother had not in previous year been ill for any heart defects etc I had to pay for this which according to ASDA was non refundable? I also had to pay for recorded delivery to send all documents. When you take out travel insurance and I took the privelidged insurance you would expect ALL monies you paid out including as they told me on phone travel parking etc to be refunded? Except obviously the excess in my case the first £70 BUT NO they have had me jumping through hoops still not returned death certificate which have reminded more than once have now had a FULL AND FINAL cheque from them LESS than the flight less airport tax less GP fee less Death cert fees travel parking but then to add more insult the genius phone operator has now put the phone down DISGUSTED DO NOT USE PLEASE for your own SANITY

I am so sorry and can totally relate to how shocking this Travel Insurance - if anyone value’s your health avoid at all costs. I had a sudden onset back accident on a plane flying out to Lanzarote. I paid to see two doctors on different days, then my condition took a turn and knew I was in serious trouble. We took £1300 out with us and with already paying out two doctors and we had limited money when was rushed to the hospital, the hospital said the Insurance was rubbish, they misdiagnosed me- I had rapid onset Cauda Equina Syndrome where my bladder/ bowel and right leg has been left permenantely paraylsed, they left me untreated in serious agony, couldn’t open my bowel or bladder, they left me to catch a flight home. All they did is one would promise guarantee then you called back and said they couldn’t without seeing my GP’s notes it would take 14 working days. They tried saying it wasn’t there fault they ran out of money, they changed the. Policy, cut recordings to miss time me telling Asda if they would pay out on a MRI scan to retun to the hospital immediately. They also got a expert to come to my home after 12 months for permenant Disability this doctor lied he blamed the Insurance and then blamed the hospital. I found out 2 months ago this doctor paraylsed someone in 1996 for not carrying out a mri scan - he had to pay almost £600,000 they are dodgy. I am sorry for your very sad loss and thoughts go out to your brothers young children- they don’t care so avoid anyone reading

“Horrendous don't buy”

written by Aydeny208 on 13/10/2016

Took out this insurance for a trip to America. Due to a ruptured Achilles' tendon I was unable to travel. Provided all required information and more. This was over three months ago. They delay, say they have not received documents and are impossible to get a hold of. I'm going to the ombudsman as I am now fed up of their delaying tactics and having sent documents twice, ran up a phone bill being on hold for hours I have had enough. My parents had insurance with Axa through their bank account and were paid within two weeks, another member of our group was paid within 4 weeks. Just this shambolic company who delay and are clearly not organised to even provide a dedicated claims handler. Please please do not waste your money and asda you should be ashamed for this that you offer as a service. Zero stars would be applicable

Having the exact same problem , was due to go to Cyprus when my step daughter broke her ankle and she couldn't travel. We have kept in contact with the insurance company at every stage and sent them all the information they ash for only to receive more and more requests. This has been going on for over 4 months whilst they continue to fob us off obviously with the ultimate goal of us giving up. What an absolute disgrace of a way to conduct themselves especially a large well known company as Asda selling these policies When people need their support the most this company simply delay and prolong every stage DO NOT BUY INSURANCE FROM THEM !!

I've had exactly the same. I was in Dubai seeing my brother and family for Xmas, tripped and broke my wrist. It's now nearly the end of April and I'm still chasing money. Like the other two notes on this thread, I've had the "we're still waiting for your response to our query of last month". When I resent my original email answering their queries, they "suddenly" found it. So frustrating. I've since reported them to the Financial Ombudsmen. Asda should get rid of this appalling and shambolic service. I'd said they were boarder line crooks.

Just had a motorbike accident in France and broke my collar bone. When I rang these from the French hospital they refused to help and quoted small print leaving me and my new motorbike stuck in South France with no way to get home and no help at all. They were happy to take my money though.PLEASE AVOID BOOKING TRAVEL INSURANCE WITH THESE AT ALL COSTS. Spread the word.

As long as you don't have to ring any of their customer services or claims department the insurance is fine. If you are one of the unfortunate person like me who lost valuables on the plane and your airline company is very inefficient then you had it!! I lost my valuables on Turkish Airlines recently and tried to contact them through their online form and telephone but they are another useless bunch of people who took like 10 days just to get through their process. In the meantime, when I contacted ASDA insurance, first of all the claims department people don't have manners. I realised the claims is handled by OSG company somewhere in Ireland. You can't ask any questions as the telephone line will tell you they can't advise you on anything. They will just tell you that they will send you a form. When the form arrives, it does not tell you where should the form supposed to go? Then they will eventually tell you you are not eligible at all!! Please note they say if you have not notified them within 24 hours all of the claims are invalid. I suggest you keep out of the ASDA insurance. I have tried AVIVA and I don't think there is anybody as good as them in my experience so far.

I took out the middle policy to cover my grandsons and his girlfriends tenerife holiday in October expecting them to be fully covered if anything went wrong,They were robbed whilst sleeping i phone i pad a gold ring and cash all to the value of £1500 gone..i knew of a £75.00 per person excess from the policy .However after sending all documents asked for by ace insurance they agreed to settle the claim by informing me that personal property claim has a limit of £250.00 .thus only paid out just over a fifth of claim.if i had known this no way would i have taken this policy out still looking through all policy details and cannot find this clause ..this should be flagged up on page one of so called benefits covered..it's time asda took a long hard look at this company

“Do not Buy This Insurance Unless You Plan To Die on...”

written by MBland1 on 31/07/2013

Recently went to visit my Fathers in Spain and took out Asda Travel insurance for this and another trip in September. My hire car was broken into and everything in the boot of the car was stolen including my wife's phone,my tom tom and other items including cash. Upon trying to claim even though all were out of plain sight in the boot Asda's insurance team said that these were not covered and produced a clause in the terms that unless all items were out of sight locked in a boot or glove compartment you cannot claim. I thought hold on these were in the boot. Ah Ha there is another clause that items of value should not be left unattended unless in a safety deposit box or safe. (Because we all take a safe away with us in the car)Guess what items of value are Mobile Phones, Tom Toms and cash. Therefore Asda insurance is not going to cover you unless you die, lose your luggage but you won't get anything if valuables are inside them or have your holiday cancelled but I would not be too sure of that either. ASDA PRICE don't think so more like Asda Fleece. Steer Clear People

I flew out to lanzarote last sept 2011. I hurt my back on the flight going out. I have no previous back conditions I was healthy and active. My trip was with my husband and 2 children. I slept the remainder of the day as I thought I had just twisted my back don't get me wrong it brought tears to my eyes the pain was also in my right leg. Next morning the pain was so severe we called a doctor wo gave me injectons and told me to get bed rest. she told me to go to her surgery next morning, we contacted Asda straight away, we was on a budget holiday. Next morning I fell off the bed, I could not feel my bum, bladder and my leg was in serious agony, We went straight to the doctor, she charged me aload of money and sent me straight to the hospital. The hospital straight away put me on morphine for the pain, they checked me for a blood clot, they found no blood clot. I could not left my leg as it was agony. They looked at my Insurance and said if you can get them to cover you come straight back we are not calling they are a rubbish Insurance!!!! They told me I had to have 4 Injections during the day Injected by a doctor or ideally them (it was costing £50 by taxi to get there) but ideally I required an urgent MRI scan I did not have the £2,500 for that. we got straight onto the Insrance faxed all the paper work to them, saying yes we can see your on serious pain relief and your in a bad way at first they said they was going to cover and get the money bsck to me has I was left with £90 for the remainding 5 days. Then the doctor came on the phone who was horrid and said they was going to fax my GP to make sure I had no previous back condition which could take up to 7 to 10 working days. I said this is made I am runnig out of pain relief. I called 9 times in total begged them to fly me home, treat me they did nothing other than me running a phone bill talking to them at the hotel. I went untreated for 5 days as it was going to cost £800 to be injected 4 times a day The pain was horiffic, I don't know ow I got threw it. We ate beans on toast lived like paupers my children could not have a ice cream. I had to pay for transfers to the airport. The best thing looking back was saving the £2k I took away and gone straight to the airport and come home. As soon, as I got back home I went straight into hospital. I had a MRI SCAN within 40 minutes and went straight into theatre for 10 hours to have my back rebuilt, I had further damage having to catch a flight home untreatedI have been left with a serious condition called Cauda Equina Syndrome, my right leg is totally paralysed, my bowel doesnt work I have to manually remove, I have to self cath 4 times a day, I have no feeling from the middle of my back all down to the back of my leg to my toe. I have horrible fireworks going constantly off in my leg, my back is in agony. I have had a further 2 operations, but there is nothing more they can do,I have serious nerve damage. I have lost my career, I have 2 children 6 and 11. I cant drive as I cant feel the foot peddle.......If I would of had surgery in Lanzarote I would of made a full recovery. My name is Sarah Fellows

When i purchase anything with the credit card I get money back on the items I buy whether it's food or anything I buy which these days is a better deal than a lot of credit cards will give you. There are far worse cards out there by a long long way. At least Asda credit card gives you something back unlike a lot of credit cards where you get nothing back and pay huge interest.

Good Value(?), but won't know until I need to claim?

I dislike that I wasn't advised of changes since my last renewal. E.G. Last year I was provided with Doctor Care Anywhere. This year it doesn't seem to be included? The process for updating medical disclosures seems laborius too.

Worst insurer ever! Do not buy any kind of financial product from these people.

Worst company ever. They denied a claim I put in for my cat, stating her care wasn’t urgent in order to get out of paying the claim. Even though this was an emergency situation and we followed vet recommended advice. It also took them 3 months just to assess the claim and then they sent me a renewal for an additional £10 a month despite not paying her claim. What an absolute joke of a company. The wait times for settling claims are ridiculous.

Hi thank you for taking the time to leave us a review. I am sorry to hear you had a frustrating experience with our colleagues, but I really appreciate you bringing this to my attention. We always aim to deliver a great experience and we are disappointed when we don’t meet expectations. We will use the feedback to make us better and to ensure this doesn’t happen again! Please do reach out if you need anything in the future. Best wishes, Nick

While traveling can be a fun escape, it's an inherently risky activity with many variables to consider. So many worries can remove you from the joy of travel, which is where travel insurance can help.

Allianz Travel Insurance Global Assistance is a prominent leader in the travel insurance space that has been around in some form since 1890. Allianz offers a variety of travel insurance plans that can suit your individual needs. Read on to learn more about Allianz.

Allianz Travel Insurance Review

Allianz is one of the leaders in the travel insurance industry, included in our guide on the best international travel insurance . With 10 plans split between single trip, annual, and rental car insurance, Allianz has its bases covered. It also provides specific insurance for particular needs, such as annual policies for business travelers and sports equipment coverage for athletes.

While Allianz is one of the best international travel insurance providers, it also has great CFAR coverage for its Prime and Premier single trip plans, covering 80% of nonrefundable travel expenses when most policies usually offer 75%. It's also great for families, with coverage for kids 17 and under in its One

Allianz is well reviewed among customers, receiving an average of 4.3 stars out of five across nearly 70,000 reviews on Trustpilot. Its Better Business Bureau page fares a little worse, receiving 3.64 stars out of five across 1,600 reviews. Positive reviews mentioned an easy and quick claims process with a responsive customer service team. However, negative reviews often mentioned difficulty specifically with claims for ticketed events.

Allianz also has a highly rated mobile app called Allyz TravelSmart through which you can contact customer service, view your plan, and file a claim. It received an average rating of 4.4 out of five stars on the Google Play store across over 2,600 reviews and 4.8 out of five stars from over 22,000 reviews on the Apple app store.

Coverage Options Offered by Allianz

Allianz travel insurance offers different policies, grouped under two types: single trips and annual multi-trip insurance .

The company's travel insurance policies can include the following coverage types:

  • Trip interruption coverage , which can help recoup costs if you leave a trip early.
  • Travel delay , which can cover some costs if you need additional accommodations due to a delay in travel.
  • Emergency medical transportation , which covers transportation to a hospital for eligible illnesses and injuries.
  • Emergency medical expenses in case of a dental or medical emergency.
  • Baggage delay , which can cover some costs if you need to purchase required items due to your bags being delayed by a certain period of time. Must have receipts for this.
  • Baggage loss or damage , which can help recoup some costs if your bag is lost, stolen, or damaged.
  • Epidemic coverage endorsement, which can help recoup costs if you must cancel a nonrefundable trip due to an epidemic. It's important to note that there may be limitations and this isn't an option everywhere.
  • Travel accident coverage , which can cover costs related to an injury that results in loss of vision, your hands or feet, as well as loss of life.
  • Support via a 24-hour hotline

Single-Trip Plans

The general budget option is OneTrip Basic, which can offer various protections should something happen, if you file a claim for a qualified reason.

One step up is the OneTrip Prime policy, one of the most popular plans Allianz offers. It has higher coverage limits than the Basic plan, along with some additional perks.

A more complete option is OneTrip Premier, which includes more comprehensive protections should you need them. This policy is for more extensive, longer trips and includes extras like SmartBenefits—which up to $100 per day for a covered travel or baggage delay with no receipts necessary, only proof of delay—and sports equipment loss coverage.

The coverage limits available vary by plan. Here's an overview of what each policy covers:

Other OneTrip Premier benefits not mentioned in the table above include:

  • Sports Traveler, reimbursement up to $1,000 in the event of a missed sports event for a qualified reason
  • Sports Equipment Loss, reimbursement up to $1,000 to cover damaged or lost sports equipment
  • Sports Equipment Rental, reimbursement up to $1,000 for the cost to rent sports equipment if your equipment is damaged or lost
  • Vehicle return, up to $750 reimbursement to return your vehicle to your home if you can't drive it for a qualified reason
  • Adventure and sports exclusions changes, which allows you to waive some losses in the event you participate in high-risk activities like free diving at 30 ft, scuba diving at 100 ft, caving, and more

There are two additional single-trip plans from Allianz that offer more specialized coverage: One Trip Emergency and OneTrip Cancellation Plus.

OneTrip Emergency Medical

OneTrip Emergency Medical is a budget option that exclusively offers post-departure benefits to cover you while you're on your trip. As such, the plan doesn't include pre-departure benefits such as trip cancellation or interruption.

  • Travel delay, up to $200 per day per person for a maximum of $1000 for delays of six hours and beyond
  • Travel accident coverage, up to $10,000
  • Emergency medical transportation, up to $250,000
  • Emergency medical expenses, up to $50,000 though dental emergencies have a maximum of $750
  • Baggage delay, up to $750 with a delay of 12 hours or more
  • Baggage loss or damage, up to $2000
  • Epidemic coverage endorsement
  • Concierge services included

OneTrip Cancellation Plus

The OneTrip Cancellation Plus policy by Allianz is its economical back-to-basics option that can recoup costs in the event of a travel delay, interruption, or cancellation for a qualified reason. This policy includes:

  • Travel interruption coverage, up to $5,000
  • Trip cancellation coverage, up to $5,000
  • Travel delay, up to $150 with delays of six hours and beyond

Multi-Trip Plans

The aforementioned policies are for single trips, but with Allianz travel insurance it's possible to get an annual/multi-trip policy.

The starter annual plan is the AllTrips Basic policy which includes the most basic coverage, and it excludes both trip interruption and trip cancellation coverage.

The AllTrips Prime policy is geared toward travelers who take a minimum of three trips each year and comes with additional coverage compared to the basic plan.

Another annual plan is the AllTrips Premier policy, which is geared toward frequent travelers and includes higher coverage limits and choices.

AllTrips Executive

Additionally, there's the AllTrips Executive policy, which may be a good fit if you're a frequent business traveler. Under this plan, personal travel is also covered. This policy includes:

  • Trip interruption coverage, up to $5,000, $7,500, or $10,000
  • Trip cancellation coverage, up to $5,000, $7,500 or $10,000
  • Travel delay, with a daily limit of $200 up to $1,600 for delays of six hours and beyond
  • Travel accident coverage, up to $50,000
  • Baggage delay, up to $1,000 with a delay of 12 hours or more
  • Baggage loss or damage, up to $1,000
  • Rental car damage and theft coverage, up to $45,000
  • Business equipment coverage, up to $1,000 in the event your business equipment gets lost or damaged
  • Business equipment rental coverage, up to $1,000 in the event you need to rent business equipment due to loss, damage, or theft
  • Change fee coverage, up to $500 to recoup costs of changing a ticket for a qualified reason
  • Loyalty program redeposit fee coverage, up to $500 to recover fees lost due to getting loyalty points back after a canceled trip
  • Pre-existing condition coverage available when purchased within 15 days of first trip deposit

Additional Coverage Offered by Allianz

Aside from the travel insurance policies from Allianz listed above that help travelers prepare for interruptions and cancellations, there are additional add-ons that can cover more.

OneTrip Rental Car Protector

If you're looking for rental car coverage, Allianz offers the OneTrip Rental Car Protector policy for $11 per day. This policy includes:

  • Trip interruption coverage, up to $1,000
  • Collision damage waiver, up to $50,000 which helps cover costs in the event your rental car is damaged in an accident or stolen

On top of the rental car coverage plan, with the OneTrip Prime plan, there's an optional upgrade to get Required to Work coverage. If there is a work-related emergency and you need to cancel for a qualified reason, this coverage can help recover expenses.

Cancel For Any Reason

An optional upgrade for OneTrip Prime and OneTrip Premier, Allianz cancel for any reason policy covers 80% of nonrefundable costs when canceling a trip for any reason. Allianz stands out compared to the best CFAR travel insurance as most policies only offer 75% coverage.

What's Not Included with Allianz Travel Insurance?

Allianz travel insurance covers the basics and more and has some high-risk activity exclusions in the OneTrip Premier plan. Aside from that, Allianz travel insurance excludes the following:

  • Acts of violence, such as war, terrorism, and civil unrest
  • Risky adventure sports
  • Unexpected natural disasters (OneTrip Premier allows cancellation due to hurricane warnings)
  • Any travel alerts or government regulations and more

If you're interested in coverage for activities like scuba diving, skiing, and more, consider World Nomads, which covers more than 200 activities.

Allianz Travel Insurance Cost

Allianz single trip travel insurance estimates.

  • The total cost of the trip

As of April 2024, a 23-year-old from Illinois taking a week-long, $3,000 budget trip to Italy would have the following Allianz travel insurance quotes:

  • $195 for OneTrip Prime
  • $270 for OneTrip Premier

A couple of 65-years of age looking to escape New York for Mexico for two weeks with a trip cost of $6,000 would have the following Allianz travel insurance quotes:

  • $298 for OneTrip Basic (total for two travelers)
  • $400 for OneTrip Prime (total for two travelers)
  • $540 for OneTrip Premier (total for two travelers)

Allianz travel insurance premiums generally stack up favorably against the average cost of travel insurance  which is $248 per trip, but again, the specifics of your trip will largely determine how much you'll pay to insure it.

Allianz Annual Multi-Trip Estimates

To receive a quote on Allianz annual plans, you don't need nearly as much information. You just need the following:

  • Insurance start date
  • Your state of residence

A 30-year-old New York resident looking for travel insurance will pay the following prices for annual travel insurance with Allianz:

  • Allianz Basic: $125
  • Allianz Premier: $249
  • Allianz Executive: $459

A 60-year-old couple from Texas will pay the following:

  • Allianz Basic: $63 per traveler, $126 total
  • Allianz Premier: $217.50 per traveler, $435 total
  • Allianz Executive: $485 per traveler, $970 total

Compare Allianz Travel Insurance

See how Allianz stacks up against the competition.

Allianz Travel Insurance vs. AXA Travel Insurance

Competitor AXA travel insurance covers 75% of your nonrefundable costs if you choose to cancel, for any reason (as the name suggests) if you choose that as an upgrade and buy it two weeks before your first trip deposit. Allianz's CFAR policy covers 80% of nonrefundable costs.

That said, if we look at the travel insurance quotes based on a 30-year-old traveler from California going to Japan in the first two weeks of October paying a total of $4,000 for the trip, AXA travel insurance is more affordable. It's $97 for its Silver plan, which covers 100% trip cancellation and interruption. Compare this to $153 for the OneTrip Basic Plan through Allianz.

Allianz Travel Insurance  vs. HTH Travel Insurance

Allianz is a good travel insurance option if you're looking for a variety of customized choices. Another competitor, HTH Worldwide Travel Insurance , has three trip protection options.

TripProtector Economy is HTH's budget option and may be a good fit if you're looking for higher medical coverage limits. This policy covers up to $75,000 in accident and sick benefits and $500 in dental benefits.

Plus, the policy covers up to $500,000 for an emergency evacuation. The OneTrip Basic policy from Allianz covers the same dental benefits but offers just $10,000 in medical expenses.

Allianz vs. Credit Card Travel Insurance

A travel insurance policy can offer robust protections, but if you're looking for something basic for trip interruption or cancellation and rental car coverage, check your travel rewards credit card. If you experience illness, weather, or cancellations that affect your trip, you may be able to recoup costs.

Credit card travel insurance coverage may be a good fit for short trips where you don't have a ton of upfront prepaid costs. However, if you're going to be away for a while, have many prepaid expenses, and are concerned about medical coverage, traditional travel insurance may be your best bet.

Allianz Travel Insurance Frequently Asked Questions

Is allianz a good travel insurance company.

Allianz is a reputable and well-established travel insurance provider. The company offers various travel insurance policies for individual trips as well as annual plans. Coverage options may include trip interruption, trip cancellation, trip delay, emergency medical, and more. The company has mixed reviews from consumers but has an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau.

How does Allianz cover COVID?

Nearly all travel insurance policies offered by Allianz cover COVID-19, aside from the OneTrip Rental Car Protector Plan. Through the Allianz Epidemic Coverage Endorsement, policyholders receive additional protections if they need to cancel a trip due to COVID. Unfortunately, while it's available in most plans it's not available in all jurisdictions, so be sure to read the fine print.

Which Allianz plan is best?

While the best plan is one best suited to your needs, Allianz's OneTrip Premier is the most robust policy, with high cancellation and interruption coverage. Additionally, kids 17 and under are included in coverage. This policy also includes unique benefits for athletes and adventurers thanks to sports equipment coverage.

Does Allianz require proof of incident?

If you need to file a claim, Allianz may require proof of incident in order to receive benefits. In cases of medical issues, you may need to provide a medical receipt or document. In other cases, you may need to provide other documentation for trip cancellation or trip interruption such as a death certificate, police report, or employment letter.

Does Allianz cover missed flights?

Allianz doesn't cover missed flights exactly but can help cover costs due to trip delays depending on your policy. So if you missed a connecting flight, you may be able to receive funds to recoup costs related to accommodations and transportation.
