11days helicopter trip to kailash and…

11days helicopter trip to kailash and Mansarovar from Kathmandu ( @comfort my travel). https://comfort It’s my dream to visit mt. Kailash but this tourism( comfort my travel) have jeopardized my dream. On 8th of April 2019, they asked me to to deposit $1500 immediately as an advance payment if I would like to join their trip for May. And I did it. They replied me the confirmation for my trip date shortly. And I prepared all the necessities required for my trip as been asked. Then they cancelled my trip few days before the trip saying my name has some issues with China embassy and they didn’t provide me permit. I was really sad and I had been told that they would refund my advance deposit money shortly. Ever since I’m waiting till date. They don’t make any communication and when I try to call their number, call center ladies are very rude, hangs up the call after few seconds while I’m still talking. I have just been informed that once China embassy would refund them my money then they would be able to return me but with no surety. In between 2 months before when I managed to call they asked me to join their September trip and I had to decline as I had already taken my one month leave on May for the trip. They have been confusing me a lot. I would say it’s hectic and better not to choose them for the trip. Just managed to talk to them again, they clearly denied to refund any money now, claiming they had deposited my $1500 advanced deposit to Chinese embassy. It’s clearly mentioned in the terms that they will be depositing $300 for permit to Chinese embassy, and in case of cancellation from their side I would be refunded the rest amount and had told me same themselves too. I would say it’s so easy for them to eat our hard earned money simply in the name of god. They are fraud! I will really appreciate if someone reading this comment could help me out on fixing ‘COMFORT MY TRIP’🙏🏻 And for rest of peoples, please be aware of this kind of fraud because after showing all the legal documents of their tourism they had my money and it clearly shows they don’t care about their reputation after having the money!!!

What is Delta Comfort Plus?

How to book delta comfort plus, change and cancellation policy for delta comfort plus, delta comfort plus vs. economy (main cabin), delta premium select vs. comfort plus, is delta comfort plus worth it.

The biggest advantage of Delta Comfort Plus seats is more legroom.

Passengers also get a premium snack and drink in Comfort Plus.

Checked bags are not free on domestic flights, similar to main cabin tickets.

Atlanta-based Delta Air Lines is the second-largest airline in the world by number of flights. From basic economy to domestic first class and international business class (called Delta One ), the airline offers many flying experiences to suit all kinds of travelers.

Whether flying domestically or across the ocean to a farther destination, you might want to do it in comfort. You may prefer something a little better than economy but less fancy than business class, especially on long-haul flights. Delta’s Comfort Plus, which is the airline’s economy class with some extra perks (not to be confused with its premium economy cabin called Premium Select) might be just what you're looking for.

Here’s an overview of what you get when flying domestically and internationally in Delta Comfort Plus, including baggage allowance, seat pitch and in-flight service.

Delta Comfort Plus is a step above main cabin, the airline’s name for economy class. When you fly Delta Comfort Plus, expect to see the following benefits on your flight.

Delta Comfort Plus perks

Bag allowance: Unless you have Medallion status , a Delta co-branded credit card or active military status, there’s no free checked bag allowance on domestic Delta Comfort Plus. You have to pay $30 for the first checked piece of luggage. But passengers flying on international flights can check one piece of luggage weighing up to 50 pounds (23 kilograms) at no cost.

Boarding: Delta Comfort Plus passengers receive an early boarding call before SkyPriority members and have dedicated overhead bin space, which can sometimes be tough to come by in economy.

Premium food: Starbucks coffee, beer and wine (offered to flyers over 21) are provided on flights of at least 251 miles, and complimentary liquor is available on flights of at least 500 miles. Premium snacks are served on flights of 900 miles or longer when there is no meal service.

Seats: Delta Comfort Plus seats offer about 34 inches of seat pitch. That means if you measure the distance between any point on one seat and the same point on a seat directly in front of or behind it, there will be 34 inches in between. That's several inches more than a standard economy seat.

Onboard amenities: You will receive a pillow, a blanket, earbuds and an amenity kit if you fly on a long-distance international flight.

It's important to understand that Comfort Plus seats are in the economy cabin. Although you receive more legroom and extra perks, it's in a different cabin than premium economy. Premium Select is the name of Delta’s premium economy, which is its own cabin in front of the economy cabin. It offers larger seats with a footrest, accelerated check-in, security and baggage handling, enhanced onboard amenities and meal service.

» Learn more: Delta Comfort Plus vs. Premium Select

comfort my travel reviews

Whether you’re redeeming Delta SkyMiles or paying cash, you can book Delta Comfort Plus tickets directly on the airline’s website.

On Delta’s homepage , select your departure and destination cities, dates of travel and the number of passengers. When the search results pop up on the next page, each class of service is clearly marked: basic, main, Comfort Plus and first.

comfort my travel reviews

On select international routes, you’ll see the Premium Select cabin in addition to Comfort Plus, which is an even more expensive fare type with additional perks.

comfort my travel reviews

» Learn more: Basic economy vs. main cabin

The Delta Comfort Plus change fee and cancellation policy depends on your origin. Tickets for domestic and international travel originating in the U.S., Canada, Europe, India, Africa and the Caribbean are eligible for free changes and cancellations.

Although you won’t receive a direct refund, you will receive an eCredit in the original amount valid toward any Delta flight purchased by Dec. 31, 2023, for travel through the end of 2024.

So is Delta Comfort Plus that much better than a standard economy ticket? Take a look at some of the differences.

When comparing Comfort Plus seats with main cabin, you typically get an extra 2 to 3 inches of room in Delta Comfort Plus. Delta’s economy class seats have 31 to 32 inches of pitch (varies by aircraft), and Comfort Plus seats measure at about 34 inches.

As mentioned above, Comfort Plus passengers receive a premium snack selection and complimentary alcoholic beverages on select domestic flights. Main cabin passengers get a smaller snack selection and have to pay for premium drinks.

As for checked luggage, travelers in both classes of service will have to pay for bags, with exceptions for elite status, certain credit card holders and military.

» Learn more: Delta Comfort Plus vs. main cabin

To truly experience premium economy on Delta, consider Premium Select. Depending on the aircraft, Delta Premium Select seats feature a pitch length of 37 to 38 inches, a width of 18.5 to 21 inches and an adjustable footrest, leg rest and headrest.

Compared to 34 inches in Comfort Plus, it’s an upgrade. Additionally, Premium Select seats can feature a recline of up to 7 inches. Some aircraft, such as Airbus A350 and Boeing 757-200 (75H), have been decked out with Delta Premium Select seats on select international routes.

On the Airbus A350, Premium Select is located between Delta One and the main cabin. On the Boeing 757-200, it’s the best seat on the plane at the front of the cabin. Some international flights, such as those operated by Airbus A330-900neo, feature both Delta Premium Select and Delta Comfort Plus seats.

comfort my travel reviews

On Premium Select seats, passengers can watch movies on a seatback screen up to 13.3 inches and charge their devices using an in-seat power outlet.

On the ground, Premium Select passengers experience SkyPriority benefits, such as a priority check-in lane, expedited baggage delivery and premium boarding. Two free checked bags are also included on international flights, one more than those flying Comfort Plus.

» Learn more: How to get free upgrades on flights

Comfort Plus is more expensive than a standard economy ticket, so you have to decide whether the upcharge is worth having more legroom, access to complimentary premium beverages and a designated overhead compartment. Especially if you're flying domestically, the extra cost for a short flight may not be worth it.

If you’d like a true premium economy experience, you’ll want to upgrade from Comfort Plus to Premium Select. This cabin can be found on select international routes to Europe or Asia, and it offers even more comforts such as a reclining seat with a footrest, a large entertainment screen and an amenity kit.

Embarking on the Uttarakhand Chardham Yatra by helicopter with Comfort My Travel was an experience that merits a resounding 5-star review. This comprehensive pilgrimage covered Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath, immersing us in the spiritual aura of each sacred site. The helicopter rides provided stunning aerial views of the Himalayas, adding an extra layer of wonder to the journey. The VIP Darshan experience and Palki services organized by Comfort My Travel ensured a seamless and deeply meaningful visit to these revered shrines. Visiting Mana Village, the last inhabited village before the Tibetan border, was an enriching cultural experience that added depth to our journey. Throughout the Yatra, Comfort My Travel's arrangements were impeccable, and the hospitality of their team was outstanding. If you're considering the Chardham Yatra by helicopter, Comfort My Travel is the definitive choice for a 5-star experience. Their dedication to creating a spiritually fulfilling and comfortable pilgrimage shines through every aspect of the journey

We undertook Char Dham Yatra by helicopter thro Comfort My Travel, from 7 May 22 to 12 May 22. Entire trip of 6 days and 5 nights was conducted very professional way, we had great darshan everywhere, no waiting. We are very happy with all the arrangement by the comfort team like hotels, logistics, support, etc. They also provide a complementary hotel accommodation at Dehradun for one night. A special mention about the maha abhishek puja organised so well at Badrinath, was such an emotional experience. We could wholeheartedly experience spirituality by visiting those very ancient temples and absorb the totally magnificent scenic beauty of the Himalayas. Kudos to comfort team and congratulations to owners of Comfort My Travel for having excellent staff & their training, we recommend Comfort My Travel without any hesitation.

comfort my travel reviews

Their taxi service is too good .I fell very comfortable. their driver are too good in nature and their talking sense is very well. I really liked their service .

Join the Comfort My Travel June 2019 group of Kailash Mansarovar, the abode of Lord Shiv and get mesmerized by the beauty of this natural destination while purifying your soul by diving into Mansarovar lake. I have travelled with this company for the first time but the experience has been splendid with great management, delicious food and memories for life.

Comfort my travel has stolen my Rs.1,20,000/- ($1500) which they took it from me as an advance to arrange my trip to Khailas ( Mansarovar) holy pilgrim. After receiving my money into their account they have only been lieing to me about delays. Upon constant following up till one year from my side they lied to me that they would refund my money and they said how impatient I was. Even their company staffs are trained thieves who is far from any morals and professionalism. Their customer service is zero indeed they can go super cheap in talking to you or responding you with such a mean attitudes like they don’t care about our complaints and we can go anywhere or put case. Seriously, I have never come across with such cheap company and it’s cheap employees. They try to scam people by posting happy pictures of people who has never used their services. They did same to me . They will delete negative comments in their Facebook page rather than resolving customers issues , they have found short cut that is delete their comments. Anyone thinking of going for this yatra kindly, can contact me on [email protected]. I will share you all the details of messages , call records , my money transaction reports and how they overall stole my hard earned money. I lost my money but I won’t let any other people loose money with these thieves . God bless & protect everyone from this scam company.

Choosing a trip, trip styles.

Which style of trip is right for me?

Our four styles of travel – Basix, Original, Comfort and Premium – cover a whole gamut of travel experiences. To find out which one has ‘You’ written all over it, visit our trip styles page .

Are trips physically demanding?

Want to lie in a hammock and not move until cocktail hour? We’ve got a trip for that. Want to power up the side of a mountain at high altitude? We’ve also got a trip for that. To determine what type of trip suits you best, each of our trips comes with a Physical Rating to let you know how physically demanding it is… or isn’t.

Travelling with children

Does Intrepid have family trips?

Intrepid offers a wide range of Family Adventures around the globe. The minimum age (for Family trips) varies depending on the destination, and Intrepid has set minimum ages to ensure that the included activities suit each age range. Additionally, you’ll notice that some of the more adventurous destinations have a higher minimum age. Please check out our Family Adventures for more information.

Travelling in a group

Who are Intrepid travellers?

Intrepid adventures are for travellers with a yearning to get off the beaten track. Whether you're travelling solo, with a group of friends, or are aged 18 or 70, there is an Intrepid adventure to suit your interests and comfort level. Each Intrepid adventure has a physical and cultural grading to help you decide if the trip is right for you. No special skills are required for most adventures, just a sense of adventure and a curiosity about the world. Even on our camping adventures no previous experience is required; our tents are easy to set up, even for first-time campers.

How many people will be on my trip?

Good things come in small packages, which is why we keep our group sizes down. This means we’re small enough to remain flexible as we thread our way through communities without intimidating the locals. On most of our trips you’ll be part of an intimate group of 12-16 people, though our group sizes are on average 10 people. Our Overland trips are in purpose-built vehicles that can carry up to 24 travellers. Group sizes are displayed on each trip’s overview page on our website.

Are there age restrictions on your trips?

For the majority of our trips the minimum age is 15. An adult must accompany all children under the age of 18. Our Overland Adventures have a minimum age of 18. Younger children can join us on our Family trips and Short Break Adventures, but check each trip for its minimum age, which is located on the trip’s overview page on the website. Most of our trips don’t have a maximum age limit, but a Self-Assessment Form is required for all travellers 70 years and over.

Who will be my group leader?

While we can’t tell you who your leader is prior to departure, we can tell you they will be awesome. Our leaders are experts in their regions, some because they’ve been travelling there for years, others because they’re local to the region and can’t wait to show you around. On longer journeys, or ones that travel through more than one country, you may change leaders part way through – but this just means double the awesomeness.

Can I just do part of the trip?

Although you won’t be reimbursed for any portion of the trip unused, you can opt to sign off the trip if you need to leave a day or so earlier. If you let us know before travel that you’ll be arriving late or need to leave before the trip ends, we will notify our team on the ground to best accommodate your requirements.

Can I make any changes to the itinerary of my group trip, either before or during the trip?

Please make sure you are happy with your group trip itinerary before booking because we are unable to change them for individual travellers. However, if you and a group of friends, colleagues or even your school would like your own personally designed itinerary, get in contact with our very talented  Tailor-Made team ; they can tailor an itinerary just for you.

Can I add an extra night at the beginning or end of my group trip?

You sure can. Just ask your adventure consultant at the time of booking.

Travelling solo

I’m travelling alone – is that OK?

This is the beauty of the Intrepid style of travel: many of our travellers join because they are travelling solo and want to meet and share experiences with like-minded people. Learn more about solo travel .

If I am travelling solo, will I be charged for having my own room?

On our trips rooming is organised on a twin-share basis. We pair up solo travellers with another traveller of the same gender as per the gender marker on each of their passports. If you'd like your own space, you also have the choice to pay for an individual room (available on the majority of our trips).

As a responsible tour operator, we strive to create a safe and inclusive environment for everyone. In the case that your gender identity differs from what is indicated on your passport, please contact us so that we can discuss rooming options with you.

On a small selection of itineraries some accommodations are booked on an open-gender, multi-share basis (for example on a felucca in Egypt or an overnight train in Vietnam). In those instances, it will clearly be stated in your Essential Trip Information prior to booking and travelling.

I have a disability – can I join an Intrepid trip?

Intrepid is committed to making travel widely accessible, regardless of ability or disability. We ask that you carefully consider whether you are physically and mentally able to complete the itinerary you have chosen, recognising that on many trips you will be required to carry your own bags and use public transport.

Where we can we will make reasonable adjustments to the operation of our trips to facilitate the requirements of disabled travellers – such as booking ground floor accommodation, or having our leaders communicate important directions in writing as well as verbally. Many travellers with disabilities have been able to enjoy our trips by travelling with a friend or companion who can assist with specific needs. If joining a group trip is not practical we may be able to provide you with a private departure. Please contact our sales team for further information on any of our itineraries.

Learn more about accessible travel with Intrepid

Are Intrepid trips suitable for LGBTQIA+ travellers?

Intrepid welcomes all LGBTQIA+ customers on our trips, however we operate in parts of the world that are less accepting. In some destinations, LGBTQIA+ identities, relationships or behaviours may be illegal or considered socially taboo. Intrepid supports LGBTQIA+ customers to travel to these destinations and is committed to ensuring our travellers face no discrimination on any part of the trip we control. However, we do encourage customers to be aware of local laws and customs in the destinations they visit for their own safety and comfort. We recommend you visit Equaldex and/or Smartraveller before you choose your trip for up-to-date advice and information about LGBTQIA+ related laws.

Our trips are generally run on a Twin Share basis, which means that we pair up solo travellers with another traveller of the same gender as per passport markers or the information we have in our booking system. On most trips, we also have a Single Supplement available for travellers who prefer to have their own room. If you identify differently from the gender marker on your passport, please let us know in advance so we can make the right booking arrangements. For customers booking and travelling together, including same sex couples, a double bed can be requested if available.

Our booking system does not currently accept the “X” passport gender identifier or Mx title, something we are actively working on rectifying. Please contact us for support during the booking process if you wish to book using these identifiers. While our current system does not allow us to enter your details without gendered titles, we can enter booking notes to ensure your gender preference is acknowledged on the ground and with our suppliers wherever possible.

We don’t tolerate any form of discrimination, violence or harassment, either between travellers or involving our leaders, partners or local people. Any behaviour that disrespects our customers, leaders or local communities, makes others feel unsafe or breaks local laws may result in Intrepid removing someone from a trip or denying their booking. If you feel that someone is behaving inappropriately while travelling with us, please inform your tour leader or local guide immediately. Alternatively, contact us on the emergency contact number detailed in the Problems and Emergency Contact section of your Essential Trip Information.

How do you arrange room sharing on the trip and who will I have to share with?

On our trips rooms are assigned on a twin-share basis. We pair up solo travellers with another traveller of the same gender as per the gender marker on each of their passports. If you'd like your own space, you also have the choice to pay for an individual room (available on the majority of our trips).

On a small selection of itineraries some accommodations are booked on an open-gender, multi-share basis (for example on a felucca in Egypt or an overnight train in Vietnam). In those instances, it will clearly be stated in your trip’s Essential Trip Information prior to booking and travelling.

Can I book a single room?

Most trips have an individual room available – check a trip’s overview page on our website or the Essential Trip Information to see whether an individual room is offered. If so, please request this at the time of booking.

Can we book a triple room?

You may be able to request a triple room depending on the trip style you choose. You can request a triple room at the time of booking, though as our bookings are made well in advance, room requests can’t be guaranteed.

Do I still have to pay for an individual room if I'm the only solo person of my gender?

If you happen to be the only solo person of your gender on the trip, you may be given your own room. We can’t guarantee this will be the case as we may have travellers book onto a trip last minute.

I'm travelling with a partner, can I make sure we have a double bed?

If you’re travelling with a partner, just let us know you want to share a room (and a bed) at the time of booking. We can’t guarantee a double bed, but we’ll do our best to accommodate you. In some destinations, the option may be two single beds pushed together to form a ‘double’.

I'm travelling with a friend and want to share a room with them but make sure we have separate beds. Can I do this?

As most of our trips are organised on a twin-share basis, if you’ve booked with a friend you’ll automatically be bunked into a room together – unless you pay for individual rooms. Most twin rooms are set up with two single beds, but please let us know you want separate beds at the time of booking so we can pass this information on to the accommodation provider.

Food, drink and dietary requirements

I have special dietary requirements – will they be catered for?

We will try our very hardest to accommodate all dietary requirements but in some out-of-the-way places it can be very difficult to guarantee. We will let you know if there are places on your itinerary where this is the case. Please let us know at the time of booking of any food requirements or allergies and we’ll pass the information onto your leader. It is also a great idea to bring a card with your dietary requirements written in the local language for those times you are eating away from the group.

What will the food be like on my trip?

Food is one of the most exciting parts of travel. There may be some familiar fare but often you’ll be confronted with the new, interesting and downright weird of the culinary world but we like to think of it as an adventure for all the senses. In addition to this, our flexible itineraries often allow you to eat with the group or branch out on your own - this means you can eat to suit any budget or desire.

Can I drink the water in the countries I visit?

In some destinations it may not be wise to drink the local water. For more details, you can find country-specific information in our destination pages, which can be found in the red menu bar at the top of our home page.

Are flights and airport transfers included in the trip price?

All transport during your trip is included in your trip price. Check your Essential Trip Information and itinerary for a full list of what’s included.

Flights to and from your trip aren’t included. If you'd like help booking international flights*, contact us for a quote.

Please note, we can’t book International flights if you’re in North America, but we can recommend services and companies for you.

Transfers to and from your trip aren’t included in your trip price.

Some trip styles have transfers included, so please check your Essential Trip Information and itinerary for a full list of what’s included.

Before you depart

Where do i find my essential trip information.

How do I obtain Essential Trip Information with full details of my trip? Every trip has a set of Essential Trip Information that gives you in-depth information about all aspects of your trip. To access your Essential Trip Information, please visit your trip’s specific page on our website. The Essential Trip Information is accessible at the top of this page.

Travel insurance

Do I need to buy travel insurance?

Travel insurance is compulsory on all our trips if you’re travelling internationally. We require that at a minimum you are covered for medical expenses including emergency repatriation, but minimum coverage may differ from trip to trip, so make sure you check the Travel Insurance section in your Essential Trip Information. You will not be permitted to join the group until your leader has sighted your insurance policy number and the insurance company's 24-hour emergency contact number – it’s really important there are no barriers to getting emergency assistance for you.

For travellers who reside within the European Union, Switzerland or USA the requirement to purchase travel insurance cannot be compulsory. However the purchase of travel insurance is still highly recommended, and travellers from these regions who decline travel insurance when travelling outside of their home region must sign a Travel Insurance Waiver Form at the Group Meeting, recognising personal responsibility for emergency medical and repatriation costs should they arise.

Do I need insurance for a domestic trip?

If you are travelling within your home country or region please confirm before travel that you are entitled to access the public medical system easily should an accident occur. We strongly recommend all travellers have a policy that also covers personal liability, cancellation, curtailment and loss of luggage or personal effects. Please get in touch via live chat or phone so we can update your file.

What kind of insurance do I need?

Minimum coverage may differ depending on the trip, so make sure you check the Travel Insurance section in your Essential Trip Information. At a minimum, your policy needs to cover medical expenses including emergency repatriation (excluding Polar*). We strongly recommend all travellers have a policy that also covers personal liability, cancellation, curtailment and loss of luggage or personal effects.

*Because our Polar voyages are quite remote, it’s essential that you have comprehensive personal travel insurance. We encourage you to take the highest level of coverage possible to cover all eventualities. Refer to your Essential Trip Information to find out the level of insurance required.

Do you only accept travel insurance provided by certain insurers?

We accept any travel insurance provider as long as we have a policy number, the company’s 24-hour emergency contact number and confirmation that you have the minimum coverage specified in your Essential Trip Information. If you’re booking your trip from the Asia-Pacific region*, our adventure consultants can help you find travel insurance – get in touch after you’ve booked to request a quote.

*If you're booking from another region, visit our  Services page  for information about our partner travel insurance programs.

Is insurance provided via my credit card sufficient?

Yes, but if you go this route, you’ll need to provide the details of the participating insurer/underwriter, your coverage level, policy number and 24-hour emergency contact number to your group leader – this is not the same as your bank name and credit card details. Please contact your bank for these details prior to arriving in-country.

Visa and entry requirements

You can check visa and entry requirements on our website or find them in the visa section of your Essential Trip Information.

Countries can change their requirements and advice at short notice, so check the latest information and travel advice. As stated in our booking conditions , it’s your responsibility to make sure you have everything you need to travel to and from your destination.

You should also check:

  • Our Safe Travel Hub to find out how you can travel safely and with ease.
  • The Essential Trip Information for your trip to find other important details such as travel insurance, accommodation, joining point instructions and what to pack.

How do I organise my visa?

Please contact the relevant local embassy, or visit a travel agent to organise your visa. We can assist you in some instances. Please contact us and we’ll do our best to help.

My application says I need a letter of invitation or other supporting documentation. Do you provide these?

There are certain destinations, such as Central Asia and Iran, where you will need support documentation from us in order to apply for your visa.

Check the visa section of your Essential Trip Information to find information about what you need to send to us, such as scanned passports or employment letters.

Safety and medical information

I am concerned about the political stability of the country I will travel through on my trip.

The safety of our travellers, leaders and operators is a major priority for Intrepid. With this in mind, we monitor world events very closely and Intrepid makes operational decisions based on informed advice from a number of sources, in particular the level of the Australian Government Department of Foreign Affairs & Trade (DFAT) travel advisory. See our Travel Alerts page for the most up to date information.

How safe are my belongings whilst on the trip?

While we take all the precautions we can to make sure your belongings are safe, we are travelling to some exciting destinations that are sometimes home to some pretty skilled thieves. Travel insurance is a must and a lockable bag or money belt will always help too.

What is the best way to carry money?

We recommend having access to money from a variety of sources – cash, cards and travel money cards are all commonly used.  Check your Essential Trip Information and the relevant destination page on our website for more country-specific information.

Will refrigeration be available for medicines? eg. Insulin

Availability of refrigeration cannot be guaranteed. As a general rule, many of our city hotels provide access to small fridges; however, outside of this, especially when trekking or in homestay environments, you cannot rely on access to refrigeration. Please be sure to advise Intrepid if you are travelling with medication that requires refrigeration.

What are the medical and vaccination requirements?

Medical and general vaccination requirements differ between nations, and as we are not medical practitioners, unfortunately we cannot advise on this issue. Please see your local GP or travel doctor for details and advice about current vaccination requirements. Information about COVID-19 vaccination requirements is available here .

What if I get ill or injured on the trip and am unable to continue?

Our leaders are trained to deal with these situations and we'll endeavour to get you help as quickly as possible. If you must leave the trip early due to illness, our local offices will help you find appropriate medical care and ensure someone at home is aware of the situation. We will do whatever we can to get you home or on your onward journey. Your travel insurance, which is compulsory on all our trips, should cover any costs incurred if illness occurs.

Currency information

What is the currency in my destination? How much should I take in credit cards/cash? Can I use my credit card during my trip?

Your Essential Trip Information includes a section on Money Matters. Please refer to this for an idea of budgets. Travellers’ cheques are not common practice anymore so it is a good idea to travel with a credit card and ATM card, or a bank-issued ‘cash card’ specifically for travel. Having a couple of options will assure that you are covered if one doesn’t work. In certain countries it comes down to potluck if you can withdraw money. One day it’ll work, the next it won’t, but it will work for your friend… Go figure! Visa cards are more widely accepted than Mastercard, particularly in Cuba where only Visa cards are accepted.

What should I bring?

What type of luggage do you recommend I take?

On most Intrepid trips you will be required to carry your own luggage, sometimes upstairs and on and off transport. We therefore recommend you travel with a backpack. For a full list of what to take on your adventure see our Ultimate Packing List .

Can I store excess luggage at the starting point hotel?

Most starting point hotels can store your excess luggage for you; however, this is at your own risk. Often a nominal fee is charged for this service. Of course, this is only an advantage if your trip is circular (i.e. returning to the same starting point).

Do I need to bring a sleeping bag?

We only have a handful of itineraries where sleeping bags are required and these are generally trips that involve camping. When we use homestays, blankets are provided but some travellers feel more comfortable with their own sleeping bag or sleep sheet. This decision is a personal preference. Refer to your Essential Trip Information if you are unsure whether a sleeping bag is required.

What clothes and footwear should I take on treks?

On a more physical trip, hiking boots are definitely recommended. If the physical rating  is under 3, hiking boots or sneakers/runners will be adequate. Many Intrepid treks will be hiking in near-freezing environments so please be sure to research the climate and weather conditions at the time of year you will be trekking and pack accordingly. There is also a packing 'checklist' in your Essential Trip Information.

What essential documents do I need to take?

It’s important that you always travel with your current passport, visas, travel insurance and Intrepid documentation. For more information see our Ultimate Packing List .

On your trip

Arrival information.

What time can I check in at my arrival hotel?

Check-in times can vary from hotel to hotel and region to region. Generally, they are between midday and 2pm. If you do arrive earlier, you’ll be able to store your luggage with the hotel and head out to explore for a couple of hours.

Can I request an early check-in?

We can’t confirm an early check-in, but our sales team can assist in booking you a night of pre-accommodation at the same hotel. If you don’t wish to pay for the extra night, you can try your luck locally (they may let you in early if the room is free) or you can store your luggage.

What is the name of the hotel where my trip starts?

This information can be found in the Joining Point instructions section of your  Essential Trip Information .

Can I opt out of certain activities if I want to?

Absolutely. If there are included or optional activities that you don’t wish to participate in, you can do your own thing instead. The exception to this is when we are trekking or travelling from one destination to the next. Please note that if you choose to opt out of an included activity, no reimbursement can be made by Intrepid.

How difficult is the trek on my trip?

Intrepid has treks ranging from relatively easy to extremely difficult. The easiest way to determine if a trek is right for you is to check the ‘physical rating’ of the trip (this can be found on our website at the top of the trip’s overview page).

Do I get any free time?

The beauty of travelling with Intrepid is that we encourage travellers to explore at their own pace. When you get to a destination, your leader will offer options on what you can do. Some of the group will do one activity, others will opt for something completely different while others may just choose to lie in a hammock and read a book. Your  Essential Trip Information  has more details on what your trip’s itinerary and timeframes permit.

What if I arrive late and miss part of the trip?

If you know in advance that you will be arriving late, please let our sales staff know. We will notify your leader, who will leave instructions with the hotel reception as to where to meet your group that night or the following morning. If you plan to arrive a day or two into the itinerary (and our group has moved to a different destination), it will be your responsibility to ‘catch up’ with the group. If this happens, we will provide you with the most up-to-date information as to where your group will be and at approximately what time.

If you are late due to unforeseen circumstances or flight delays, please call the emergency contact number located in the Essential Trip Information . Intrepid cannot reimburse you for any portion of the trip unused, but this can often be claimed on your travel insurance.

What facilities are at the campsites?

We have a wide range of camping sites around the globe. They range from having all the creature comforts to bush camping on the plains of the Serengeti with limited facilities (though their amazing vistas make up for this). Most camps will have basic facilities at a minimum. Your Essential Trip Information  will give you a clear indication of what to expect on your decided trip.

Will I need a sleeping bag/mat/tent?

On our Africa and USA trips we provide the tent and sleeping mats, but you will need to bring your own sleeping bag. In Australia tents, blankets, linen and towels are provided so there is no need for a sleeping bag. More information can be found in your Essential Trip Information .

Are there western toilets available?

Some trips have regular access to western toilets while others don't – it just depends on the areas you’re travelling in. As a general rule, the more remote the place the less likely you are to find western bathroom facilities.

Will I be able to do any laundry?

Along the way there are usually chances to do laundry, either through your hotel or using local services. Your leader will be able to let you know once you are on the trip.

Accommodation

Can you provide me with a list of places we are staying at?

We are only able to provide information on your joining and finish point accommodation, the details of which are listed in your  Essential Trip Information .

As Intrepid likes to support numerous local businesses, we often have a few places in each city that we can alternate our groups between. For this reason, we can’t give you a full list before you travel. At the welcome meeting on Day 1, your leader may be able to provide you with this so you can email friends and family back home with the details.

What standard of accommodation should I expect?

The standard of accommodation depends on the Trip Style you have chosen. Learn more about trip styles.

Is accommodation air-conditioned/ heated?

We want our travellers to be as comfortable as possible so when you are headed to a hot climate, it is likely that you will either have a fan or air-con. Of course, if you are staying in remote areas or at homestays, you will need to expect the facilities to be a little more basic.

Keeping in touch with home

What communication facilities will be available?

Communication facilities are always improving globally. Many hotels and public places have Wi-Fi so it’s usually possible to keep in touch with home every couple of days, if you so desire. In remote places (think Mali, Serengeti or the Sahara) or on treks or homestays, you will not be able to communicate as readily. Your leader will usually give you the heads up before you leave a place so you can send a quick email or two. Phone cards are easy to get your hands on; just make sure your phone is unlocked before you travel. Or in many countries, the cheapest way to make a phone call is at an internet cafe.

How can friends and family contact you?

If family and friends are unable to contact you in an emergency through email or phone, they can contact Intrepid directly. Emergency contact details (for your destination) are listed in your Essential Trip Information , or they can contact one of our Global Sales offices, who can pass on a message if required.

Will my mobile work?

We can never guarantee your phone will work as desired, as many of our destinations are out of the way and you may have limited coverage. Chat to your phone provider before you leave about global roaming and the costs involved, and get their advice on the coverage you’ll receive in the places you’re travelling in. Alternatively, you can usually pick up a local sim card on the cheap (just make sure you phone is unlocked!).

Will I get internet coverage?

Some places have Wi-Fi hot spots everywhere and other places will have no coverage at all. If you stumble into the latter, take the rare chance to just sit back and get to know your fellow travellers the old-fashioned way.

Will I be able to charge my electrical appliances?

In most places you’ll be able to recharge your appliances at the hotel. We recommend you bring a travel adapter with you. On our Overland trips, most vehicles come with their own power supply and you should be able to recharge onboard. Be sure to bring an extra camera battery just in case.

What type of ground transportation is used?

If it moves there’s a good chance you’ll be riding on it. The type of transport used depends on your trip style. Find out more about trip styles  or see your  Essential Trip Information  for the specific type of transportation used on your journey.

Tipping information

Is tipping commonplace in other parts of the world?

Yes, in most places tipping is expected. At your welcome meeting, ask your leader about the local custom and advice on how much is recommended at restaurants or with local guides.

At the end of your trip, if you're happy with the service you received, providing a tip for the leader - though not compulsory - is appropriate. While it may not be customary to you, it's of great significance to the people who will take care of you during your travels, inspires excellent service, and is an entrenched feature of the tourism industry across many Intrepid destinations.

Where can I find your latest travel brochures?

In the meantime, you can find everything you could want to know here on our website. Or, for a trip back in time, view our brochures from 2019 .

Financial security

Is Intrepid financially secure?

Yes. Intrepid started in 1989 and have been profitable almost every year since 1991.

What happens to my money when I pay for my trip?

When Intrepid receives money from either you or from your travel agent, the funds are deposited into a Client Trust Account. The money stays in this account until the day of departure of your trip. Why? So that in the unlikely event of Intrepid ever going broke, your money is still safe and you would get it back in full. Intrepid's Client Trust Account is independently audited every year. Failure to meet financial criteria reflecting the financial viability of a travel agent results in revocation of the agent's licence to trade. Intrepid are licensed under these arrangements.

Is my travel agent financially secure?

It is an unfortunate fact that travel agents do go broke from time to time. If you are using a travel agent, it is your responsibility to ensure that the agent is financially sound. This is important as the agent may hold your money before sending it to us for your trip. Should that agency go broke before we have received your money, then it may be lost. Different countries have different levels of legislation, licences, bonds, trust accounts and/or insurance schemes to protect you. These vary greatly from country to country and some countries have no such protection at all. Please research this carefully to make sure the money you are paying is secure. Where there are no protection systems in your country, at least look at how long the business has been trading, ask others about their reputation and seek independent advice on reputable travel agencies.

The Intrepid Foundation

What is The Intrepid Foundation?

The Intrepid Foundation is the not-for-profit arm of Intrepid that helps support non-government organisations in the places we visit each year The Intrepid Foundation distributes donations from Intrepid and travellers to more than 40 partners around the world.

How did it start?

We noticed that travellers were asking how they could do more to give back to the places they visited during their Intrepid trips. That’s why, in 2002, we created our not-for-profit – The Intrepid Foundation – to empower travellers to make a real impact in the communities we visit. Since 2002, The Intrepid Foundation has raised over AUD 14 million and supported more than 160 communities around the world.

What kind of organisations does The Intrepid Foundation benefit?

We currently have more than 40 partners in over 30 countries. These partners are making a difference across four key focus areas: protecting the environment, taking a stand for wildlife, addressing inequality and empowering communities.

What’s the advantage of a traveller donating to The Intrepid Foundation?

To double your impact, Intrepid dollar matches all our travellers’ post-trip donations. Intrepid also takes care of all administration costs so you can be assured that 100% of your donations go to our partners on the ground. Whether helping to break the cycle of poverty and inequality for indigenous Maasai women in Kenya, supporting pioneering whale research in Antarctica or providing sustainable cooking courses to combat food waste in Brazil, we’re determined to make a positive change.

How can I donate?

The best way is online on The Intrepid Foundation’s website. Your donation and credit card details are secure, and you will receive a receipt immediately.

Is my donation tax deductible?

If you are an Australian taxpayer, donations to The Intrepid Perpetual Fund are tax deductible. Donations to the Intrepid Community Project Fund are not tax deductible.

The Intrepid Foundation is a Deductible Gift Recipient (Item 2) charity registered with the Australian Charities and Not-For-Profits Commission. Donations may be tax deductible in Australia if the charity partner you’re donating to is a registered DGR1 charity.

Can I donate to any local organisation through The Intrepid Foundation?

No. The Intrepid Foundation offers a selection of organisations that they have come to know well, and have conducted ‘due diligence’ checks to ensure they are well run, trustworthy and do genuinely effective and important work with the money raised.

We currently have more than 40 beneficiary organisations in over 30 countries. Check them out on the Intrepid Foundation’s website .

Website problems

What do I do if I am unable to open a link on the Intrepid website?

Oh no! We really want to get you where you need to go. Please tell us what’s broken through our Contact Us Page and our resident experts will fix it as quickly as possible.

COMFORT MY TRAVEL (Dubai) - All You Need to Know BEFORE You Go

I review laptops for a living, and these are my 3 favorite laptop travel accessories

If my laptop's coming with me on a trip, so are these bad boys

Nexstand Laptop Stand on a desk holding a laptop up

  • Portable laptop stand
  • Comfy travel keyboard
  • Travel mouse

I've been working as a reporter, editor and journalist for going on 15 years, and that means I've had to travel to where the story is happening and write about it on a pretty regular basis.

Like most of us, I carry a laptop when I'm traveling for work, and I often spend hours banging out notes and articles in a hotel room or on the plane. For years I never thought twice about it, just tossing my trusty old Dell XPS 13 in my bag and hopping on a flight to wherever I needed to be.

But over the last few years I've noticed I can't comfortably use the best laptops on the go anymore by themselves. They're good enough for knocking out a couple of emails or a quick document, but the thought of hunching over one at a hotel desk for 3-5 hours of serious work makes me cringe. Our bodies just weren't designed to hunch over a keyboard attached to a screen for hours at a time, and I'm here to tell you that living that way will eventually catch up with you.

I know because I'm not even 40, yet I already suffer from serious hand, wrist, neck and shoulder issues because of a lifetime spent sitting at a keyboard. I've had to spend years relearning how to use laptops and PCs in a way that doesn't hurt me, and I hope the lessons I've learned can save you some painful wear and tear on the road.

So if you've got a trip coming up and plan to take a laptop or tablet to get work done on the go, take a minute to go over my recommended accessories and consider adding them to your packing list. It can be a little frustrating to try and cram extra gadgets into your luggage when you're trying to pack light, but I promise you, your body will thank you for taking these laptop accessories with you on your next trip.

A great portable laptop stand

Nexstand Laptop Stand on a table holding up a laptop

Maybe you've noticed it already, but working on a laptop set on a desk in front of you can be pretty uncomfortable. This is typically because you have to crane your neck down to look at the screen while simultaneously holding your hands up in an unnatural elevated position to type right below the screen, causing your whole body to hunch up and, if you're me, eventually ache like hell.

Nexstand K2 Portable/Adjustable Laptop Stand: was $39 now $36 @ Nexstand

Nexstand K2 Portable/Adjustable Laptop Stand: <a href="https://nexstand.io/products/nexstand-k2-laptop-stand-1" data-link-merchant="nexstand.io"" target="_blank" rel="nofollow"> was $39 now $36 @ Nexstand This inexpensive foldable portable laptop stand is made of black reinforced nylon, weighs half a pound and supports laptops up to 17 inches in size. It does wobble a bit, but in 3 years of use I've never had it topple or damage a laptop.

This is why it's so worth it to invest in a good portable laptop stand that can collapse down to fit in your luggage. I personally recommend this $45 laptop stand that changed the way I work (pictured above) from Nexstand. They used to be sold on Amazon and you can still find a lot of other great portable laptop stands at the store Jeff Bezos built, but currently the only way to buy a Nexstand is through their website.

I like this cheap little black plastic stand because it's lightweight and folds down into a compact size that's about 12 inches long and an inch or two thick. It's also adjustable, so you get a few inches of wiggle room to adjust the height of your laptop to your comfort, which is key.

If it looks a little too thin for your liking, rest assured there are lots of alternative laptop stands out there that are sturdier and cost more money. I recommend the Nexstand K2 simply because its lightweight, folds down for easy packing and costs less than $50, so if you lose it on a trip you won't feel too terrible.

A comfy travel keyboard

Keyboardio Model 100 keyboard

A laptop stand alone will do a lot to make your time using a laptop on the go more comfortable, but it can make typing a little awkward since your keyboard is now hovering several inches above the desk.

Enter the external keyboard, a key laptop accessory I use basically all the time because laptop keyboards just aren't very comfortable for me to use. I have a few ergonomic keyboards I like to use at home, but when I travel I have one I like to take with me because it has its own travel case and makes working on a laptop a whole lot easier.

Keyboardio Model 100: $349 @ Keyboardio

Keyboardio Model 100: <a href="https://shop.keyboard.io/products/model-100" data-link-merchant="shop.keyboard.io"" target="_blank" rel="nofollow"> $349 @ Keyboardio The Keyboardio Model 100 is a split ergonomic mechanical keyboard with hot-swappable switches and customizable keys w/ per-key RGB lighting. At $350 it's a pretty expensive keyboard, but the design quality and comfort are top-notch.

There are all sorts of travel keyboards out there in a range of options, from prices to key layouts to wireless support (fancier models support Bluetooth, cheaper ones still come with Wi-Fi USB dongles you have to plug into your laptop), so I recommend taking some time to find one you like in a price range you can afford.

The keyboard I carry with me when I travel is a lifesaver for me, but it's not for everyone because it costs roughly $349. I'm talking about my  Keyboardio Model 100 ($349), an ergonomic split mechanical keyboard (pictured above) that comes with its own travel case.

I like a split keyboard because you can reposition each half for maximum comfort, so you can settle yourself at the hotel desk (or let's be honest, in the hotel bed) and let your hands and arms rest comfortably, then position the keyboards beneath them. This is even nicer when traveling because a split keyboard is more compact and easier to pack than a standard rectangular keyboard.

So while I do recommend you invest in a nice ergonomic split keyboard that you find comfortable to type on and travels well, I don't necessarily think you have to shell out over $300 for the privilege. I love my Keyboardio Model 100 (you can read all about how this keyboard transformed how I work ), but there are lots of other options out there that cost a bit less.

GoldTouch Go 2 Value Bundle: $119 @ Amazon

GoldTouch Go 2 Value Bundle: <a href="https://target.georiot.com/Proxy.ashx?tsid=45724&GR_URL=https%3A%2F%2Famazon.com%2FGoldtouch-Wireless-Bluetooth-Mobile-Keyboard%2Fdp%2FB00QL2OFHK%2Fref%3Dsr_1_1%3Ftag%3Dhawk-future-20%26ascsubtag%3Dhawk-custom-tracking-20" data-link-merchant="Amazon US"" target="_blank" rel="nofollow"> $119 @ Amazon This GoldTouch Go 2 is a portable Bluetooth keyboard that works with both <a href="https://www.tomsguide.com/reviews/windows-11" data-link-merchant="tomsguide.com"" data-link-merchant="Amazon US"">Windows 11 and macOS. It also adjusts up to 30º along the horizontal plane and up to 30º along the vertical plane, allowing you to fold it up, down, back or forward to more comfortably fit your hands.

For example, I spoke to workplace ergonomics expert Cameron Stiehl (aka  The Ergo Lady ) recently to get her advice on how to work at a laptop more effectively without pain, and she recommended ergonomic keyboards from Human Solution. Specifically, the GoldTouch Go 2 (linked above) portable split keyboard, which works wirelessly via Bluetooth with both the best Windows laptops and the best MacBooks . It also folds down for travel, and though it's not as compact as my Model 100, it's also over $200 cheaper.

"There's one keyboard I'm starting to recommend more, the GoldTouch Go," Stiehl told me. "It's a split keyboard that's portable, and small and sleek. And it's got a switch on it that changes it from PC to Mac, so anybody can use it. It folds in half, it's basically two little squares of keyboard, you can set it in any kind of split angle that you need to even tented if you need that to keep the arms, full pronation. But even fold it in half and throw it in the bag. It's so easy. And so like, no reason not to use it!"

A small, comfortable mouse

Contour Unimouse review unit

Finally, you should round out your setup with a nice, comfy mouse that travels well. This is less important than the laptop stand and external keyboard, I think, since while working you likely reach up to use the laptop's trackpad or touchscreen less often than you do to type.

Contour Unimouse: $89 @ Amazon

Contour Unimouse: <a href="https://target.georiot.com/Proxy.ashx?tsid=45724&GR_URL=https%3A%2F%2Famazon.com%2FUnimouse-Wireless-Technology-programmable-Right-Hand%2Fdp%2FB075VBGNZ3%3Ftag%3Dhawk-future-20%26ascsubtag%3Dhawk-custom-tracking-20" data-link-merchant="Amazon US"" target="_blank" rel="nofollow"> $89 @ Amazon The Contour Unimouse is an adjustable ergonomic wireless mouse that you physically fold from a 35° angle to a 70° angle just by pushing on it. This allows you to customize the shape for your comfort, and it just so happens to make it pretty easy to pack too.

But if you have space in your bags for a wireless mouse, it's a good idea to chuck one in so you can more comfortably click and drag your way through work on the road. Your hands and wrists weren't designed to repeatedly reach across your chest and claw at a touchpad, so anything you can do to keep them comfortably resting will go a long way towards making working on the go more comfortable.

Personally I like to carry the Contour Unimouse with me when I travel because it's small, lightweight and is the rare vertical ergonomic mouse that can fold down on itself. So while it can't quite get as small as the pint-sized little travel mice you often see sold in airport gadget shops, it's quite easy to pack.

Contour Unimouse review unit

More importantly, it can get tall enough and has a big enough footprint to fit in my overly large hands, which means I don't get painful cramps after long work sessions the way I would with one of those dinky little $30 travel mice. The Contour Unimouse can unfold from a 35° angle to a 70° angle, which lets you adjust the size and height of the mouse to your comfort level once you've unpacked it.

The only real weakness of the Contour Unimouse as a travel gadget is that it requires you to plug a USB-A wireless dongle into your laptop. That's no problem even on newer laptops since it comes with a USB-A to USB-C adapter, but it can be a problem if you accidentally lose the wireless dongle in your luggage.

So if you work from a laptop on the go regularly, consider investing a hundred bucks or more in some quality travel accessories that will make it a more comfortable experience. I know how hard it can feel to justify paying extra for accessories when your laptop already has a perfectly usable keyboard and trackpad, but trust me — it pays off in the long run.

Merrell Moab Speed 2 GTX Hiking Shoe Review

A lighter and nimbler take on merrell’s flagship design, the latest moab speed is an impressively well-rounded option for most hikers and terrain.

Merrell Moab Speed 2 GTX

Price: $170 Weight: 1 lb. 6.8 oz. (women’s size 9) Waterproof: Yes (Gore-Tex) What we like: Checks all the boxes we look for in a well-rounded hiking shoe. What we don’t: Roomy toe box and lack of secure heel resulted in a slightly sloppy feel—not ideal for covering steep and technical terrain. See the Women's Moab Speed 2 GTX   See the Men's Moab Speed 2 GTX

The Merrell Moab is a staple on trails across the country, and the aptly named Speed takes the winning design and trims it down for quick-moving day hikes and other lightweight adventures. We recently took the updated “2” to Chilean Patagonia for testing, where it proved to be impressively capable and versatile. The roomy toe box and lack of security at the heel did result in some sloppiness—the shoes wouldn’t be our first choice for particularly technical objectives—but the mix of comfort, stability, protection, and traction is hard to beat for on-trail adventures. Below we outline our experiences with the Moab Speed 2 GTX. To see how it stacks up to the competition, check out our articles on the best women’s hiking shoes and best hiking shoes .

Comparison Table

The competition, performance.

Out of the box, the Merrell Moab Speed 2 GTX hits a real sweet spot in terms of comfort. For starters, the midsole strikes a nice balance between cushion and structure, offering enough underfoot support for covering technical ground without feeling overly stiff. (Importantly, the latest “2” uses 30% more foam than its predecessor, resulting in a noticeably cushier and less rigid feel.) The nylon upper is also nice and flexible, and there’s ample padding around the collar. My first true test with the shoes came during a trip up Cerro Nani, a Chilean peak that ascends about 5,000 vertical feet in under five miles. By the end of the day, I had suffered no hot spots or pressure points, and the shoes have fared equally well on subsequent outings. It’s true that the Moab Speed is at the softer end of the spectrum, and the toe box is noticeably roomy, both of which are downsides for navigating tricky terrain. But for hikers who stick to the trail, the all-day comfort is a real highlight.

Merrell Moab Speed 2 GTX hiking shoe (hiking up slope above lake)

At 1 pound 6.8 ounces for my pair in a women’s size 9 (they’re listed at 1 lb. 5.2 oz.), the Moab Speed 2 GTX is pretty average in the wider hiking shoe market. For reference, they’re on par with or lighter than popular alternatives including Merrell’s own Moab 3 GTX (1 lb. 9.9 oz.), Salomon’s X Ultra 4 GTX (1 lb. 6.1 oz.), and Hoka’s Anacapa 2 Low GTX (1 lb. 8.8 oz.) while checking in heavier than hiking-friendly—but much less supportive—trail runners like the Hoka Speedgoat 5 (1 lb. 1 oz.) and Altra Lone Peak 7 (1 lb. 2.4 oz.). In the end, the Moab Speed lands in a really desirable spot for many hikers: It's light and nimble enough to cover ground quickly but with enough heft to confidently forge through loose and off-camber terrain.

Merrell Moab Speed 2 GTX hiking shoe (shoes dangling off pack)

A key component to a well-rounded hiking shoe, traction is another strong suit for the Moab Speed. In this case, Merrell opted for a proven Vibram outsole with closely spaced, fairly aggressive (4mm) lugs that did a great job biting into soft terrain like loose gravel and thick moss. The only time the shoes faltered was on steep rock slabs, but this had more to do with the sloppy fit (more in “ Fit and Sizing ” below) than the outsole design. Otherwise, the Moab Speed performed flawlessly on everything from hardpacked trail to lichen-covered boulders.

Merrell Moab Speed 2 GTX hiking shoe (tread closeup)

The Moab Speed 2 GTX is impressively stable and supportive for a low-top design—closer in feel to a substantial hiking boot than a flexible trail runner. Underfoot, the brand’s patented FlexPlate technology—an ultralight plate designed to increase rigidity and stability—does a good job providing structure and firmness without detracting from the shoes’ plush and well-padded feel. I did suffer a few ankle rolls on Cerro Nani but came away overall impressed by their ability to trudge through loose and off-camber terrain with ease. By contrast, I wore a pair of lightweight trail runners the next day and felt noticeably less stable and more vulnerable to ankle rolls. It’s worth noting that the shoes have a pretty tall stack height (34mm at the heel and 24mm at the forefoot), which some hikers may not like, but I never felt tippy or off-balance and enjoyed the isolation from the trail.

Merrell Moab Speed 2 GTX hiking shoe (flexing at front)

Gore-Tex is the gold standard when it comes to waterproofing, and the Moab Speed 2 GTX fared predictably well in the wet. Protection was limited due to the shoes’ low cut (Merrell does make a mid-height version for $10 more), but they performed flawlessly in shallow river crossings and when hiking through swampy patches off-trail. My only protection-related complaint is that the gap between the tongue and upper made it easy for debris to enter, even when I laced the shoes tightly.

Merrell Moab Speed 2 GTX hiking shoe (standing in water)

Unfortunately, the shoes' waterproof membrane doesn’t bode well for breathability or drying time (non-waterproof shoes typically breathe better and dry quicker). The protective TPU layer along the upper further detracts from ventilation. In the end, my advice would be to either opt for the non-waterproof Speed 2 ($140) or go with the full-height boot if you plan to utilize the Gore-Tex membrane. For more on the topic, check out our article: Do You Need Waterproof Hiking Shoes?

Merrell is a hiking shoe specialist , so it comes as little surprise that the Moab Speed 2 GTX is a quality and well-built design. The heel and toe caps are noticeably substantial and protective, the ripstop nylon upper boasts TPU overlays for added abrasion resistance, and the outsole is thick and clearly made to last. For reference, our ascent of Cerro Nani involved terrain that was definitely pushing the Moab Speed’s limits—including loose patches of dirt and gravel, lots of boulder hopping, wading through sharp bushes, and even snow at the peak—and the shoes came away looking largely unscathed, apart from some cosmetic scrapes and stains. I’ll need more time to evaluate the shoes’ long-term durability (and will follow up here if any issues arise), but all signs point to the Moab Speed 2 being a worthwhile investment.

I’m usually between an 8.5 and 9 in women’s hiking shoes and opted for a size 9 in the Moab Speed. However, while the shoes fit lengthwise (confirming my size selection), the wide toe box and lack of security at the heel resulted in a slightly sloppy feel. In other words, if you prefer a snug and performance-oriented fit, the Moab Speed will likely disappoint. However, if all-day comfort is a bigger priority for you—like it is for many hikers—then the Merrell's more accommodating shape could be worth the drop in precision. A final note: Merrell offers the shoes in dedicated wide sizes, although given my experiences, I’d advise trying them on before you buy to ensure you truly need the additional room.

Sustainability

Like many leading outdoor brands, Merrell is taking steps to improve their environmental impact, from reducing plastic packaging to incorporating more eco-friendly materials in their products. The Moab Speed 2 GTX  is a case in point: The shoes’ mesh lining, mesh footbed cover, and shoelaces are made of 100%-recycled materials, while the EVA foam insole is 50% recycled. It’s worth noting that the latest version forgoes the Vibram Ecostep outsole featured on the original iteration, which was made from 30%-recycled rubber, but it’s a solid effort overall.

Other Versions of the Merrell Moab Speed 2

We tested the women’s Moab Speed 2 GTX for this review, and the men’s model is largely similar. Primary differences include a slightly heavier weight (1 lb. 8.7 oz. per pair) and different colorway options, but the two designs are otherwise very comparable. Zooming out to the wider Moab Speed lineup, the mid-height Moab Speed 2 Mid GTX adds over-the-ankle coverage and support for $10 more than the low-top. And for those who don’t need or want waterproofing, the non-waterproof Moab Speed is lighter (1 lb. 3.4 oz. for the women’s version) and cheaper ($140) than the Gore-Tex model we tested but shares an otherwise identical feature set and overall construction. All three styles are offered in dedicated wide sizes, although we found the standard fit to be plenty roomy for our average-width feet.

What We Like

  • Comfortable out of the box with a well-cushioned midsole, flexible upper, and ample padding around the collar.
  • Vibram outsole is very capable and versatile, with closely spaced lugs that do a great job biting into soft ground.
  • Great support and stability—the shoes feel a lot closer to a hiking boot than they do a flexible trail runner.
  • Well built with hardwearing materials that hold up well to rough use.
  • Reasonably light and nimble, especially considering the levels of support and durability.

What We Don’t

  • Wide toe box and lack of security at the heel resulted in a slightly sloppy feel—not ideal for covering technical or particularly steep terrain.
  • Gap between the tongue and the upper makes it easy for debris to enter.
  • Waterproof membrane and TPU layer detract from overall breathability (Merrell does sell a non-waterproof version).
  • Not particularly modern-looking, especially compared to many trail running-inspired designs.

Merrell Moab Speed 2 GTX hiking shoe (front of shoes)

Merrell’s Moab Speed joins a popular and growing segment of the hiking shoe market , which aims to balance weight, cushioning, and support. One of the longstanding leaders in this space is Salomon's X Ultra 4 GTX , which checks in around the same weight but with a step up in all-around trail performance. Specifically, it's a bit more planted with a stiffer platform, and you get additional protection with the full rubber toe cap. For putting in serious miles on the trail, we prefer the X Ultra, although its quick-pull lacing system is polarizing (it’s harder to customize tightness throughout the foot like you can with the Merrell).

Merrell Moab Speed 2 GTX hiking shoe (day hike in Patagonia)

Merrell’s flagship Moab 3—the design off of which the Moab Speed is based—remains one of the most common shoes on the trail. However, despite sharing a similar name and relatively roomy toe boxes, the two Moabs fall on opposite ends of the market. Where the  Moab 3 Waterproof  is a classic design that emphasizes comfort and durability, the Moab Speed is lighter (by 4.9 oz. per pair) and noticeably nimbler but has a less protective synthetic build. A final decision between the two will likely come down to hiking priorities. For most day adventures, we prefer the trimmed-down Speed; for more demanding day missions and even on-trail backpacking, we’d go with the standard—and $30-cheaper—Moab (for more, see our in-depth review ).

Another popular alternative to the Moab Speed is Danner’s Trail 2650 GTX . This light-and-fast shoe—its name refers to the length of the Pacific Crest Trail—impressed us with its comfort, low weight, sharp looks, and traction. Stacked up to the Merrell, the Danner is more expensive at $190, but you get nice upgrades in material quality, with a long-lasting leather upper and Vibram’s premium Megagrip outsole. It’s true that the Moab Speed is a bit more stable, but neither design is a great match for covering long stretches of technical terrain (especially with a heavy pack). In truth, both are solid day hiking options, and the Merrell’s advantage in value may give it the edge for some.

Merrell Moab Speed 2 GTX hiking shoe (hiking over soft ground)

Finally, if you’re torn between going with a hiking shoe or a trail runner, the Hoka Speedgoat 5 is definitely worth a look. Around 4 ounces lighter than the Moab Speed 2 GTX (it’s also offered in a waterproof Gore-Tex version for $170 and 1 lb. 3.2 oz.), the Speedgoat is a popular package of cushioning, grip (with a Vibram Megagrip sole), and durability that’s gained remarkable popularity among thru-hikers. For $15 less than the Moab, you get a nimbler feel and additional comfort for long days on the trail. But what you gain in cushion and flexibility, you lose in support: While the Speedgoat is notably stable for a running shoe, the Moab Speed offers a firmer, more planted feel on the trail for minimal added weight.
