Enjoy Overnight Stays on your Cruise to Africa

Choose from remarkable itineraries on three beautiful ships, Norwegian Dawn , Norwegian Sun , and the recently refurbished Norwegian Sky . Some itineraries include an overnight stay in the Seychelles, Egypt or Richards Bay, allowing you to explore even more. Experience the splendor of ancient tombs in Safaga, Egypt. Or take a bus tour to Signal Hill for a magnificent sunset. The choice is yours with longer times in port.

Flavors as Diverse as its Landscapes

Flavors as Diverse as its Landscapes

Dutch, French, Indian and Malaysian meld to create the Afrikaans-style of cooking. Braai or shisa nyama, which means ‘burn the meat,’ is like western BBQ. For a meaty snack, try Biltong. Served in a brown bag, these spiced strips are akin to jerky. Wondering about Slap Chips? Try these vinegar-doused fries alone or in a Gatsby sandwich. Seafood lovers can rejoice too at Mossel Bay, whose name means bay of mussels. Need a ‘dop’ or drink? A favorite is Amarula, a cream liqueur made from the fruit of the Marula tree. Elephants get drunk eating its fermented fruit.

Suggested Itinerary

Day 1 Welcome to Cape Town! After being greeted at the airport by a representative, enjoy a transfer to the luxurious Cape Grace Hotel. Get to know your tour director and fellow travelers at a welcome reception this evening. Cape Grace Hotel

Day 2 Embark on a full-day exploration along one of the world’s most stunning driving routes, taking you past the 12 Apostles, Hout Bay, and Chapman’s Peak. Stop at the Cape of Good Hope, first rounded in modern times in 1488 by the Portuguese in their attempt to establish trade in the Far East and still a significant landmark for sailors today. Visit Boulders Beach, home to thousands of African penguins, and then be treated to lunch with drinks overlooking beautiful False Bay. Cape Grace Hotel

Day 3 You have a choice of two excursions today, depending on your interests. Take a cableway up to the top of Table Mountain for spectacular views of the city and surrounding areas, followed by a trip to the Cape Winelands. South African wine is world-renowned, and you’ll get to visit two of its best vineyards, complete with wine tasting. A sumptuous lunch will be included along the way.

Or choose to explore another side of Cape Town at famous Robben Island, once used as a prison for many political inmates, including Nelson Mandela. You’ll ferry over to the island, where you will take a tour led by a former inmate. Back in Cape Town, enjoy lunch and afterwards board the cableway to Table Mountain’s summit, followed by a drive through some of the city’s diverse neighborhoods. Cape Grace Hotel

Day 4 Today marks the beginning of your safari river cruise on the Chobe River—one of the best places in the world to see large herds of elephants! Fly to Kasane, Botswana (via Johannesburg), where you’ll be transferred to the Chobe River, and tender boats will take you to the fabulous Zambezi Queen cruise vessel. Settle into your stateroom and in the evening, enjoy a welcome cocktail reception and dinner. Zambezi Queen

Day 5 This morning, head out on a thrilling water safari! Venture out by tender boat to get up close and personal with huge herds of elephants, buffalo, lions, crocodiles, zebras, and more that are drawn to the water. You’ll also see a huge variety of birdlife and plant life as you breathe in African air around you.

After your morning activities, enjoy lunch on board while using your unique vantage point to spot wild animals and drink in the expansive views. In the afternoon, enjoy another water-based safari adventure. After a delicious dinner, settle down for a restful and tranquil night in your luxurious suite. Zambezi Queen

Day 6 Today, join a full-day safari of the world-famous Chobe National Park in open-top 4×4 vehicles. You’ll have the chance to spot wildlife like giraffes, zebras, lions, leopards, and more! For lunch, take a seat under the trees and savor a delicious al fresco picnic. As the sun begins to sink and the animals wake up from their afternoon naps, enjoy another game drive as you make your way back to Chobe River. Zambezi Queen

Day 7 Visit a typical African village this morning, where you’ll spend time with the village children and elders. Back on board and following lunch, you’ll have a choice to take a boat safari, go birdwatching, or fish for tiger and bream in the river. In the evening, you’re in for a treat. Enjoy a traditional African dinner, served with festive African singing and dancing. You can even join in the festivities if you feel like it! Zambezi Queen

Day 8 During breakfast, watch for wildlife as you cruise the Chobe River. Later, bid farewell to your friendly boat crew and transfer to Victoria Falls. Enjoy a leisurely afternoon, perhaps indulging in a relaxing spa treatment. In the evening, join a cocktail reception aboard a vintage steam train. Victoria Falls Hotel

Day 9 Today, a local guide will take you on a tour of Victoria Falls, the world’s largest waterfall and one of the Seven Wonders of the World. In the evening, embark on a private sunset cruise along the Zambezi River, observing a variety of game while enjoying a mix of tapas with drinks. Victoria Falls Hotel

Day 10 Enjoy a leisurely morning before touring the town of Victoria Falls and being treated to a home-hosted lunch. Later in the day, head to the Victoria Falls colonial-era rail station to board the Rovos Rail—South Africa’s premier luxury rail line, which elegantly captures the romance of a bygone era. Rovos Rail

Day 11 Start the morning with a safari to the famed Hwange National Park, which boasts a tremendous selection of wildlife with over 100 species of mammals and nearly 400 different birds. The elephants of Hwange are world-famous and the park’s elephant population is one of the largest in the world. After your safari, return to the train for a lovely brunch as you travel through the vast landscapes of central Zimbabwe on the way to the border town of Beitbridge. Take in the southern African landscape from the lounge, observation cars, or your deluxe suite. Rovos Rail

Day 12 Leave baobab tree country and South Africa’s northern wilderness as you cross the Tropic of Capricorn, traveling alongside the Magaliesberg Mountains. Rovos Rail

Day 13 Disembark the train in beautiful Pretoria, South Africa, where you will be transferred to the airport in Johannesburg. From here, you can catch a connecting flight home or continue the adventure. Perhaps some relaxation on the little-known, powdery white sand beaches of Mozambique? Ask our Africa specialists about handcrafted touring options based on your interests, travel dates, and budget!

Africa Cruises: What to Know About the Growing Cruise Destination

W hen most Americans think of cruises, they probably think of island-hopping in the Caribbean or cruising by glaciers in Alaska from afar. That may be appealing for some people, but for others, the idea of being lazy on a ship of thousands of people for a week doesn’t sound like much of a vacation.

But what if instead of doing a major Caribbean cruise, you did something far more adventurous: a major African cruise with wildlife safaris every day?

Most major US cruise lines that offer cruises to Africa make stops around southern Africa, taking advantage of a huge selling point of countries like South Africa, Botswana, Mozambique, and Madagascar: safaris. Africa cruises tend to be longer than those sailing from Miami or Cozumel, but they can be far more exciting, offering the chance to go on a safari drive in Africa almost every day without the need to sleep in the bush, drive long distances, deal with logistics or planning, or even unpack more than once. You’ll visit some of the best countries in the world for safaris without the need to switch hotels or fly between remote destinations.

Here’s what to know about cruises to Africa with the major US cruise lines.

What cruise lines go to Africa?

  • Booking safaris and excursions
  • What to know about third-party excursions
  • Africa cruises vs. tropical cruises
  • How adventurous are Africa cruises?
  • Extra things to consider about cruises to Africa
  • Who will like a safari cruise?

It may be surprising to know that not that many of the major US cruise lines offer dedicated Africa cruises. If you’re keen on a “small ship” cruise or an adventure cruise with a company like Mantis Journeys or Swan Hellenic , you’ll find many more options. But they can be quite pricey, and won’t earn you any points if you’re a member of a major cruise reward program.

Fortunately, a few of the most popular big cruise lines are starting to offer cruises to Africa.

Norwegian Cruise Lines: I went with Norwegian and I’d absolutely do another one, despite some hiccups (more on that below). For the best mix of comfort and price, it’s hard to beat. In 2025, Norwegian has 13 different trips to Africa , leaving primarily from Cape Town, Qatar, and Mauritius. The various trips make stops in places like Seychelles, Mozambique, South Africa, Kenya, Réunion, Tanzania, Senegal, Gambia, Sao Tome and Principe, Madagascar, and more. Prices for 2025 cruises start around $1,900 per person with lots of included perks — but in the weeks before I left for my 12-day southern Africa cruise , I saw rates listed as low at $599 per person . You won’t beat that.

Silver Sea : Silver Sea has 17 Africa cruises in 2025, leaving mostly from Cape Town. It has slightly fewer safari-focused ports of call, but also makes stops in places like Namibia, Seychelles, and Madagascar. Cruises are much smaller than Norwegian’s at around 600-700 guests per cruise, and it tends to be much pricier: the cheapest 2025 Africa cruise is a 15-day round-trip from Cape Town, South Africa , starting at $8,500 per person.

MSC: MSC has a smaller amount of Africa cruises available, and only makes stops at six ports: three in South Africa, as well as Namibia, Mozambique, and Mauritius. The company has seven Africa cruises available in 2025 , the longest of which is only five nights. That makes an MSC cruise a good add-on to a longer trip through South Africa, rather than using it as your entire vacation. The least-expensive is $687 per person for a three-night sail .

Africa cruise excursions

african cruises - elephants in addo safari cruise

Without a doubt, the most popular type of shore excursion on an African cruise is the game drive. You’ll find game drives through national parks or private reserves offered at nearly every port of call on a cruise to Africa. That allows guests to go on a safari nearly every day of their cruise if they’d like, though there are a few things to keep in mind.

The excursions may be pricier than you’re used to on other cruises. On my Norwegian cruise, the cost for an activity including transportation from the ship, a two-hour game drive, and transportation back to the ship (no lunch, no other activities) ranged from $179 for the closer safari parks to more than $400 for all-day trips to further away safari parks that included lunch and drinks. That’s to be expected, considering the long bus rides to some of the parks and the fact that the fee includes park fees, gas/fuel, the services of a safari guide, and transportation to the parks/reserves.

My cruise on the Norwegian Dawn was inexpensive, so it made it easier to spend more money on the excursions. But you should plan to spend a higher percentage of your vacation funds on excursions, especially as some ports don’t offer a lot to do within walking distance.

Pro tip: popular excursions on Africa cruises often sell out. Book them in advance; you can always cancel if you change your mind later. Before booking, check out  Matador’s guide to shore excursions and how to figure out if they’re worth the cost .

Africa independent excursions

africa cruises - independent excursions and safaris

Third-party and local companies like “Safari for Six” can be good options for travelers who don’t care to book through the cruise line excursion desk. Photo: Suzie Dundas

You absolutely do not need to book excursions through your cruise company. Booking through local companies (or websites like Viator and GetYourGuide ) can be a lot cheaper and good alternatives if the excursion you want is sold out or not offered through your cruise company. They also put more money directly into the pockets of locals who may not otherwise see much economic gain from cruise traffic. But unlike cruises in Western destinations, you may not be able to just do an online search for “cruise excursions” and book something easily from your phone.

In much of Africa, booking via Facebook or WhatsApp is common, and legitimate companies may not even have websites. So you’ll need to be a bit of a savvy traveler to book them. The downside of booking excursions  not through your ship means the ship will leave without you if you’re late. But it’s very, very rare for companies to get cruisers back to their ships too late — it’s not good for business if online reviewers say “I missed my cruise.” Reputable companies will be happy to answer questions and communicate before you book via email or WhatsApp. Many tourist guides in Africa speak four or five languages, so be sure to ask if your tour will be English-speaking, or a mixed-language group.

You can also find guides through unofficial Facebook pages. Most cruises have an unofficial Facebook page. Just type in the name of your ship on Facebook, and you’ll probably find them. On these pages, it’s common for guides and guiding companies post ads for their services, and for other travelers to make recommendations of companies they’ve used.

I found the company we used in Richards Bay, South Africa (Shout out to Safari for Six ) via a comment on a Facebook page for the Norwegian Dawn ship, and we had a great time. For $170 per person, we got to do a two-hour boat safari, plus a four-hour game drive with lunch.

What’s different about Africa cruises vs. tropical cruises?

africa cruises - pool area

On many Africa cruises, the only pool or lounging time you’ll have is on the ship, as many ports of call are focused on adventures and wildlife, not beaches. Photo: Suzie Dundas

Aside from the obvious (you’ll be visiting cities in Africa, not tropical islands), there are a few things to prepare for if you’re thinking about looking more info Africa cruises.

  • Some ports of call and harbors in Africa are fairly new to welcoming big ships, so they may not have all the kinks worked out. Be flexible and patient, and don’t expect to have tourist-friendly restaurants and stores within walking distance at each port. It’s essential to do some light research to figure out what to expect at each port. For example, when my cruise stopped in Richards Bay, South Africa, people were shocked to learn that the port is also a coal shipping terminal, and that there’s not much to do within walking distance. Had they spent even five minutes researching the port, they could have figure that out and planned accordingly.
  • You may want to get some extra vaccinations and carry preventative medicine. It’s up to you. But depending on where you’re going, you may want to carry malaria pills, or get some basic vaccinations like DPT (diphtheria, pertussis, and tetanus), or a yellow fever vaccine if you’re traveling on the western coast of Africa. Even without vaccines, you’re still unlikely to catch any diseases, but som travelers may find that being vaccinated agains them gives them a little extra peace of mind. You can get most basic international vaccinations at local pharmacies like CVS and Rite-Aid. (In South Africa, most parks are malaria-free.)

How active are cruises to Africa?

africa cruises - cape of good hope

On my trip, a day tour of Cape Town included the opportunity for a quick and steep hike to a lighthouse near the top of the Cape of Good Hope. Photo: Suzie Dundas

On Africa cruises, you’ll likely still have excursion options like beach visits and snorkeling trips, but they’ll likely be fewer and far between. Most excursions won’t be quite as leisurely as those you’d find on Caribbean or South Pacific cruises, though they still cater to older and less-active audiences. But if you’re going on a cruise to relax and put your toes in the sand, you won’t find that at as many ports in Africa as you would in the tropics.

What you will, find, however, are bouncy Jeep rides across dirt roads to go in search of elephants, chances to visit small communities for traditional outdoor BBQs, opportunities to paddle small canoes through birdwatching reserves, and options for visiting botanical gardens or budding wine-tasting regions.Yes, if you want something very active, like a distance hike or rock climbing trip, you’ll probably need to book it on your own. But most cruises to Africa will have a few more soft adventure-type excursions at each port than you’d find with more beach-focused cruises.

For frequent active travelers, it may seem tame. But for people used to more traditional cruises, it’ll likely be a bit more active and adventurous than you’re used to.

The downsides of Africa cruises

safari cruises - SF to cape town

Depending on where you live, getting to the starting point for your cruise could add days of travel on either end. Photo: Google Maps

While safari cruises are pretty exciting, they have some downsides. The first is usually the cost and time to get to the starting point. Popular departure ports include Cape Town, South Africa; Dubai, UAE; and Doha, Qatar. None of these destinations are particularly close for travelers in the US, nor are they inexpensive to reach. So you’ll need to take travel time and cost into account when planning. Consider also that most cruises to Africa are on the long side (usually at least 10 days).

The second downside is one relevant to most cruises: you don’t get to spend much time in each destination. This can be a bit of a downside on game drives, since most animals tend to me more active at dawn and dusk, as opposed to the middle of the day. Since you’ll arrive around 7 or 8 AM every morning and need to be back on board by about 5 PM each day, your only options for game drives are in the middle of the day. You’ll still see animals, but just that your chances are a little lower of seeing more elusive species, like lions and leopards.

Who should consider an Africa cruise?

group of people on cruise chairs

Africa cruises can be ideal for mixed-generation trips, where some travelers want to take it easy but others want to spend their days on adventures. Photo: Virrage Images /Shutterstock

The honest answer here is that most everyone would enjoy an Africa cruise. But the more dialed in answer is that they’re well-suited to people who have always dreamed of going on safari vacations or seeing far-away villages and landscapes, but who aren’t comfortable navigating foreign countries on their own. Seeing Africa by cruise ship takes away much of the uncertainty and unknowns that can make some travelers hesitant to travel too far out of their comfort zones. It’s also a heck of a lot easier to plan a cruise than it is to put together an entire safari trip.

That makes Africa cruises an obvious choice for older travelers or travelers who are new to international travel. There was a running joke on my shjp that it was “Africa Lite:” a chance to get a taste of the continent, and travelers who wanted to see more could return for dedicated land-based trips after their cruises. I would feel much more comfortable having my retired parents experience a safari via a cruise ship, rather than sending them to navigate traveling through Johannesburg on their own.

This Land and Cruise Safari Will Bring Travelers to See Incredible Wildlife — and Sail the World's Largest Artificial Lake in a Luxury Houseboat

This epic safari adventure from CroisiEurope is the perfect family vacation — here's why.

Elizabeth Heath is a writer and editor living on a hill in Umbria, from where she writes about travel in Italy, the rest of Europe, and farther afield.

We had waited all morning to see elephants. "Don’t get your hopes up," said our guide, Sonny. It had been rainy, and elephants, per Sonny, don’t like the rain. Apparently, neither do lions, zebras, giraffes, or Cape buffalo. But we saw them all that day. Zebras trotting through a corner of the park where they’re normally rarely seen. Giraffes munching on acacia leaves just a few feet from our Jeep. A group of lions walking down the dirt road like they owned it — because let’s face it, they do.

And when the elephants finally showed up, they came by the dozens — groups of mothers, babies, teenagers, and solitary tuskers. Without exaggeration, it was as if all our safari dreams were fulfilled in a single day.

Our family’s first trip to Africa came by way of CroisiEurope , a French cruise company known for its mid-range, family-friendly European river cruises . The three of us, including my spouse and our 11-year-old daughter, were guests on CroisiEurope’s South Africa land and cruise safari , a nine-day journey that started in Johannesburg, South Africa, and ended at Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe. It was a wildly adventurous trip, taking in four African countries via boats, planes (including some really small vessels), helicopters, and Jeeps.

Elizabeth Heath

We arrived in Johannesburg a few days ahead of the organized tour and checked into 54 on Bath , a low-key, modern hotel in the tony Rosebank district. For our first full day, we organized everything through Viator , including a private driver and a visit to the Elephant Sanctuary Hartbeespoort Dam and its adjacent monkey sanctuary.

For those who long to see elephants up close, but are wary of the ethics of wildlife attractions that permit interaction, it’s important to know the animals here are free-ranging and, while trained, can choose whether or not to interact. The chance to touch an elephant, make eye contact with it, and even feed it moved me to tears.

When we joined the CroisiEurope group the next day, we headed out for a driving tour of Johannesburg that included the once-thriving CBD (or Central Business District), the Apartheid Museum , and the sprawling Soweto settlement, where the anti-apartheid movement was born and where its bloodiest history played out. The museum takes an unflinching look at South Africa’s brutal past and complicated present, and devotes significant space to Nelson Mandela and other heroes of the anti-apartheid movement. The entire experience is hard to sum up in a few sentences, other than to say that seeing the overcrowded, impoverished swaths of Johannesburg from behind the window of a tour bus, revisiting the museum’s searing images of police violence against 20th-century protestors, and listening as our guide discussed 21st-century disparities between white and Black people (referred to as "non-whites" during apartheid) leaves visitors with a lot to unpack.

The mood was lighter when we departed the next morning on a less-than-two-hour flight to Kasane, Botswana , the launch pad for visiting the Four Corners area of southern Africa, where the borders of Botswana, Namibia , Zambia , and Zimbabwe are just miles apart. In the center of it all, at the confluence of the Zambezi and Chobe rivers, is Impalila Island, Namibia. A Jeep ride, a border crossing, a short boat trip, another border crossing, and a 40-minute boat ride brought us to cozy, traditional Kaza Safari Lodge, one of two CroisiEurope lodges on the island. Vervet monkeys tumbled and leaped on the lodge grounds, but we weren’t to approach them, our host warned, as they bite. So do the hippos, but they were grunting from a safe distance.

Our first full day of safari was a doozy, beginning with an animal-studded game drive through Chobe National Park. At 4,500 square miles, Chobe is Botswana’s third-largest national park, and it's known for its healthy population of African bush elephants — more than 50,000 roam in and out at any given time.

The elephants were slow to make an appearance that morning, but the kudus, impalas, baboons, warthogs, Cape buffalos, and hippos were not at all put off by the rain, nor were the countless species of birds. Even the lions obliged, though they were surrounded by a gaggle of other safari vehicles. But Sonny had a trick up his sleeve, and quickly went down a different track where no other Jeeps followed us. We watched breathlessly as a pride of five lions padded right past our open vehicle — a pinch-me moment that will be indelibly engraved in our memories.

On an afternoon water safari — one of several we’d take that week — we saw countless hippos, a few crocodiles, and many elephants up close. We also spent a morning on a village walk on Impalila Island led by Lennon, our safari guide who lives in a village close to the lodge. Cattle, small-scale farming, and fishing are mainstays here, and tourism also provides a source of income for villagers. Only a few villages are connected to a shaky electrical grid, and most households that can afford them have diesel-powered generators or solar panels for limited electrical supply. Attacks from hippos, crocodiles, and poisonous snakes, as well as water-borne illnesses, are constant threats to the island’s residents — Lennon’s own mom survived a crocodile encounter.

©Michelle Louise Lawson

We departed Namibia by way of Kasane — on two-, four-, and six-seater planes bound for Kariba, Zimbabwe, flying over boundless wilderness areas, mighty Victoria Falls, and the endless waters of Lake Kariba. CroisiEurope is a cruise line, after all, and the second half of our trip was spent aboard the Zimbabwean Dream , one of CroisiEurope’s two 16-person luxury houseboats that ply the shores of Lake Kariba, the world’s largest artificial lake.

At more than 2,000 square miles, Kariba feels more like an inland sea than a lake — I almost expected to see porpoise fins break the smooth surface. Instead, that surface was cut by hippos, who seemed to gather near every grassy bank, along with the occasional crocodile. Once again, elephants were everywhere. We’d wake to find them at the water’s edge or grazing the tall grass near the shoreline — a surreal view. We once counted a group of at least 23, including babies just a few weeks old. On our way from the ship back to Kariba Airport, our minibus had to make a quick maneuver in reverse to avoid the ire of two bull elephants walking down the road.

Our last stop was Victoria Falls , where we checked into Victoria Falls Safari Lodge , where all rooms overlook a watering hole. Here, too, the elephants did not disappoint. By late afternoon, they emerged from the surrounding forest to feed, bathe, and linger for hours by the water. It was tough to tear ourselves away at bedtime. A wet, exhilarating walk around several Victoria Falls viewpoints, as well as a thrilling helicopter ride the morning of our departure, capped a momentous trip.

CroisiEurope’s southern Africa program is full of big adventures, offering the right mix of creature comforts while delivering a dizzying amount of animal sightings. The trips run in all but the height of summer (December to early March in in southern Africa), when heat, rain, and mosquitos make the voyage untenable. This safari adventure is priced at around $6,000 per person (airfare excluded).

This Norwegian Cruise sailing takes you on a bucket list adventure: What it's like aboard

south african cruise and safari

For Kylie Herd, an Australian passenger on Norwegian Dawn’s Feb. 25 southern Africa itinerary, cruising has been the best way to check places off her bucket list.

“I just go with whatever cruise line has the itinerary that I want to do at the time that I’m available. It tends to be Norwegian, and when I saw that Norwegian had all these African cruises, I just thought, ‘I’m going to spend summer in Africa,’ because it’s an amazing itinerary,” she told USA TODAY.

When it comes to cruising, most Americans probably think of bopping around the Caribbean or checking out the wilds of Alaska if they’re feeling especially adventurous, but that’s really just scratching the surface. Cruise lines are increasingly offering diverse itineraries including expedition cruises to remote parts of the globe and introductory sailings to help travelers explore countries and regions they might never visit otherwise.

Madagascar was the real draw for months of consecutive cruises on the Dawn for Herd.

“I’ve been trying to go to Madagascar for years. I always wanted to go there way before the movies ever came out. It’s one of those places that’s really difficult to get to,” she said. “When I saw Madagascar on a cruise itinerary I was like, ‘I have to do it.’ ”

Although the Feb. 25 sailing had to skip Madagascar for logistical reasons after a delay departing Mauritius, Herd said that she was able to visit the country earlier on her trip and that it was a real highlight.

Norwegian’s Africa itineraries had various changes and missed ports throughout the season. Passenger contracts give cruise lines some leeway to alter itineraries on short notice for reasons including weather or conditions on the ground that prevent ships from reaching or being accommodated safely in a scheduled port. Such changes can be especially common in regions prone to political unrest or that lack sophisticated port facilities.

Even so, Herd said she understood why passengers who missed out would be frustrated, but she encouraged her fellow travelers to keep an eye on the positive. “I understand the disappointment. I was disappointed, too, but we’re still having a great time.”

The Feb. 25 cruise still stopped at Reunion, a French island in the Indian Ocean, which has an active volcano, as well as ports in South Africa where travelers could spot local wildlife.

Safari from a cruise

Norwegian Dawn stopped at four ports in South Africa, three of which offered safari experiences as shore excursions.

▶ From Richard’s Bay, passengers could visit the iSimangasilo Wetland Park , home to elephants, rhinoceroses, hippopotamuses, zebras and other classic African big game. The park is about an hour and a half drive from the port, and Norwegian’s shore excursion included two game drives, snorkeling and a traditional South African braai, or barbecue.

Just as cruise itineraries can sometimes be subject to last-minute changes, safaris are at the whim of wild animals. Sightings are not guaranteed, but patience and vigilance are often rewarded.

▶ In Gqeberha (formerly Port Elizabeth), Norwegian Dawn’s passengers could visit Addo Elephant National Park, also about an hour and a half drive from the port.

As the name suggests, Addo is home to a huge and docile population of more than 600 elephants. These animals often congregate around watering holes accessible from well-worn safari tracks.

Even after a strong rainfall the night before the excursion, which allowed elephants to retreat into the bush and temporarily lessen their reliance on overtaxed wells, dozens of the creatures greeted visitors coming from the ship for two-hour game drives.

▶ In Mossel Bay, passengers could also access private game reserves, which often have a higher concentration of wildlife roaming free but can include animals that are not directly indigenous to the area.

Cape Town and the winelands

There’s more to Africa than safaris, and Cape Town is an especially good place to experience metropolitan life and other kinds of outdoor activities on the continent.

South Africa’s legislative capital offers excellent hiking, a great foodie culture, beautiful (if slightly chilly) Atlantic beaches, penguins and more.

For travelers willing to explore beyond the city, South Africa’s wine country is close at hand in Stellenbosch and Franschhoek, and many vineyards offer tastings and meal experiences. One Norwegian excursion took passengers to the Blaauwklippen wine estate in Stellenbosch, which is best known for its Zinfandel.

Is an Africa cruise worth it?

From a financial standpoint, a cruise around Africa can be an excellent way to explore. For American travelers, however, flights to and from the ship are often more expensive than the cruise itself.

For example, a 13-day Norwegian itinerary that begins in Cape Town on Dec. 7 and ends in Mauritius on Dec. 20 has prices that start at $899 per person for an inside stateroom, but flights can be well over $1,000 round trip. The current cheapest itinerary from Detroit, for example, is a 42-hour slog on multiple airlines via Montreal and Dubai to Cape Town. The return trip is a bit shorter, at 31 hours, also via Dubai and Montreal. That routing would cost $1,694 per person in economy as of March 18, according to Google Flights.

Logistically speaking, though, it can be much easier to book a cruise and rely on the line’s shore excursions to expand one's horizons than to coordinate one's own safari.

“With multiple diverse ports of call within one coastal continental area, our Africa voyages provide our guests the opportunity to explore lush rainforests or volcanoes, experience captivating wildlife tours, learn about the rich culture on the South African coastline, indulge in Cape Town’s incredible wine regions, and so much more,” Brian Gilroy, vice president of revenue management and itinerary planning for Norwegian Cruise Line, said in a statement to USA TODAY.

The one thing to keep in mind is that the African cruise market is less mature than the Caribbean – at many ports, there just aren’t comparable facilities to handle big ships. That doesn’t mean the cruises can’t or don’t happen, just that sometimes the operation is a little less fluid than the well-oiled Miami machine.

“Our 11- and 12-day cruises start and end in either Cape Town, South Africa, or Port Louis, Mauritius, and include an overnight stay in one of those magnificent cities, giving our guests the chance to fully explore what these regions offer. The variety of adventures our guests can experience in these destinations are endless, which makes for a truly unforgettable cruise experience," Gilroy said.

Travelers may be more likely to encounter a hiccup on their Africa cruise, but that’s all part of traveling to a new and exciting place. A missed port or an extra sea day can be a great time time to take stock, focus on the highlights, enjoy the experience of unlocking a new destination, and maybe take another sip of the wine your onboard sommelier recommended.

Just take a page out of Herd the Australian’s book. Despite some schedule changes, she said, “I’ve loved every single thing.”

Uncover the beauty of South Africa with a cruise & stay safari holiday

South Africa cruises are something of a bucket list trip, with holidaymakers able to get close to the Big Five on safari land excursions and admire the country’s coastline at sea. Here’s what to expect.

In association with:

Iglu Cruise

South Africa cruise and safari holidays are the ultimate way to make the most of a getaway to this incredible country.

Explore multiple destinations from the comfort of your ship and enjoy time on land watching some of the world’s most fascinating wildlife on a safari pre- or post-sailing.

Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) is one cruise line which offers voyages around South Africa’s beautiful coastline and thanks to cruise and stay holidays booked via travel agent Iglu Cruise you’ll get the best of both worlds without any extra effort on your part – it’s all organised for you, with return flights packaged in.

We’ve taken a peek at an NCL cruise to South Africa to find out what globetrotters can expect both out on the water and on terra firma.

South Africa cruises - stay

Your 17-night cruise onboard Norwegian Dawn will begin with a three-night stay at a four-star Cape Town hotel. There are countless things to see and do in the famous city but there are some highlights you should be sure to tick off during your time in Cape Town , and this itinerary should help.

What to do in Cape Town in three days

Table Mountain: Ride a cable car up to the top of Table Mountain for stunning views of the city and coastline. Bo-Kaap: Visit the colourful neighbourhood of Bo-Kaap, known for its brightly painted houses and rich Cape Malay culture. V&A Waterfront: Spend the afternoon exploring the V&A Waterfront, a bustling hub of shops, restaurants and entertainment.

Robben Island: Take a ferry to Robben Island where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned for 18 years. Be sure to join a guided tour to learn about the island’s history and significance. Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden: Visit the Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden, known for its diverse plant life and beautiful setting at the foot of Table Mountain. Camps Bay: While away the evening at this trendy beachfront area with plenty of restaurants and bars.

Cape of Good Hope: Opt for a scenic drive down to the Cape of Good Hope, the southwesternmost point of the African continent and stop at Boulders Beach to see the resident penguin colony. Constantia Wine Route: You can’t come to South Africa and not drink! Enjoy an afternoon exploring the Constantia Wine Route, home to some of South Africa’s best wineries and tasting rooms. Long Street: Settle in for the evening on Long Street, known for its vibrant nightlife and diverse array of restaurants and bars.

rhinos south africa cruises

Other itinerary highlights on this NCL cruise to South Africa include Richards Bay and Walvis Bay. The former is a city on a lagoon on the east coast of South Africa where the Mhlatuze River meets the Indian Ocean.

Surrounded by natural beauty, Richards Bay’s lagoon and nearby wetlands house a variety of bird species, while the nearby Hluhluwe-Imfolozi Park is one of the oldest game reserves in South Africa, with a glut of wildlife including elephants, lions and rhinos.

Want to simply laze? The spot has several beaches that are popular with tourists and locals alike; Alkantstrand Beach is a Blue Flag beach with lifeguards and facilities for swimming and surfing and Tuzi Gazi Waterfront has a variety of restaurants and bars.

South Africa cruise port of call Walvis Bay takes you over to the neighbouring country of Namibia on Africa’s southwest coast. The bay is situated on a lagoon hosting a plethora of bird species, including flamingos, pelicans and cormorants. Anyone looking to get active will relish nearby Namib-Naukluft National Park, a popular destination for hiking and desert tours.

Fancy some sport out on the water? Kite surfing, windsurfing and sandboarding are all popular here, with lessons and rental equipment available to holidaymakers. Or perhaps you’d rather sample the fruits of the sea without getting in? Fresh seafood is available in the city’s many restaurants so tuck in with gusto!

South Africa cruises - safari

South Africa has become the go-to destination for travellers looking to enjoy a safari experience and get up close to the Big Five – African elephants, lions, leopards, Cape buffalo and rhinoceros -as well as many other animals such as giraffes, zebras, hippos and cheetahs.

With a surplus of safari camps available it can be hard to know where to start when planning a holiday, but cruises to South Africa with NCL and Iglu take out this tricky part for you.

Your Cape Town stay before your South Africa cruise will be followed by a safari at Aquila Game Reserve just two hours outside the city. The 10,000-hectare conservancy is situated between the Langeberg and the Outeniqua Mountains in the Western Cape, with game drives offered on traditional safari vehicles, horseback or quad bikes.

leopard south africa cruises

On safari here, guests can enjoy a wide diversity of wildlife and natural Karoo beauty with the opportunity to capture stunning wildlife photos. Elephants, lions, buffalo, rhinos and leopards as well as a significant amount of other wild game all roam freely on the reserve making for a truly unique and unforgettable experience.

You’re guaranteed a scenic backdrop to all the prowling, mating, and feasting you might see en route too – the South African landscape is breathtakingly beautiful, with vast grasslands, rolling hills and dense forests.

Still not convinced? Take it from the stars – past guests have included everyone from Margret Thatcher and Rihanna to Katie Holmes and MC Hammer!

There are oodles of opportunities to relax at Aquila Game Reserve, it has a large swimming pool with a poolside bar along with large dedicated dining areas and an African-style restaurant that serves local cuisine and traditional South African dessert. There’s even a spa!

South Africa cruises - sail

Of course there’s relaxation aplenty (and more besides) back on your NCL ship, Norwegian Dawn, for those on cruises to South Africa.

Along with its own spa, the vessel boasts a casino, a fitness centre and several pools and hot tubs to keep cruisers busy. There are also plenty of family-friendly activities, including a kids’ club and a video arcade.

After more entertainment? Expect live music, Broadway-style shows and more, plus there’s always fun to be had at the bars and lounges on board.

You won’t go hungry either, Norwegian Dawn has 14 dining options, comprising complimentary restaurants, casual eateries and speciality dining options such as Moderno Churrascaria, Le Bistro and Teppanyaki.

As for where you’ll rest your head when the day is done, Norwegian Dawn has a variety of staterooms to choose from, including inside cabins, oceanview cabins, balcony cabins, and suites. What’s more, all rooms are equipped with a flat-screen TV, mini-fridge and a private bathroom.

Last but not least, the good news is that with this South Africa cruise you’ll get NCL’s Free at Sea package thrown in which makes the cruise all-inclusive. The upgrade includes: a premium beverage package, speciality dining package, Wi-fi package and shore excursion credit per port (for guests one and two) so you’ll definitely get that VIP feeling. Lions aren’t the only kings around here!

Cape Town is the capital of the Western Cape. Table Mountain is the spectacular backdrop to the city, and the summit can be reached by Cableway. Cape Town's Victoria and Albert Waterfront is a popular area with shops, entertainment venues and over 80 restaurants. Trips may be offered to Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens and Robben Island, where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned during the apartheid era.

Durban is the busiest port in South Africa and is a popular tourist resort. It is famous for the Golden Mile, a long stretch of sandy beach ideal for surfers, swimmers and sunbathers, and bordered by uShaja Marine World, hotels and some of Durban's best Art Deco buildings. The city's Sri Sri Radhanath Temple of Understanding is a new and opulent temple which is open to visitors and has an underground restaurant.

The capital of Mozambique is also known as the City of Acacias, and was once a Portuguese Colony. The railway station and the Iron House were built by Gustav Eiffel who designed the Eiffel Tower, and south of the city are several reserves and national parks, including the Maputo Elephant Reserve where visitors can also see flamingos, leopards, crocodiles and hippos. Locals sell wood carvings and batik cloth from stalls on the beach.

Port Elizabeth

Port Elizabeth is a green city with a number of parks and gardens, including the large and wildlife-rich Settler's Park. The Donkin Trail is a good way to see the city's sites, taking in the market Square and grand City Hall, the gothic library and old settler cottages. Beyond the city is the Big Five game reserve of Shamwari and Addo Elephant Park, where Cape Buffalo can also be seen.

Richards Bay

This industrial port in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, is the gateway to Zululand, the dunes, swamp, forests and wildlife of St Lucia Wetlands - hippos and crocodiles, pelicans, storks and flamingoes - and Hluhluwe Umfolosi Game Reserve. Other trips may be offered to the Shakaland Experience, a recreation of a Zulu homestead. Richards Bay has a new waterfront shopping mall, the Boardwalk.

This Namibian town is famous for the nearby sand dunes, the largest being Dune 7 offering wide-ranging views of the coast. Offshore is a large platform built to collect guano, now a major export, and an unusual and popular restaurant built on a raft. The area around Walvis Bay is an important wetland, a habitat for flamingos and the Damara tern. Trips may be offered to the Namib Desert, the Skeleton Coast - an inhospitable and arid terrain fronted by pounding surf and over a thousand shipwrecks - Swakopmund, Pelican Point seal colony and Sandwich Harbour.

Zanzibar (Tanzania)

The archipelago of Zanzibar off the coast of Tanzania has white sand beaches and a string of coral reefs. Its main industries are dhow building and the cultivation of cloves, cinnamon and ginger, both of which feature on tours. Stone Town is the old quarter of Zanzibar City, and a World Heritage Site with many interesting buildings built from coral rock. The Old Dispensary's four stories are decorated with wood-carved balconies and the House of Wonders with its tiers of pillars is now the Museum of History and Culture.
