"Queen of the Satpuras"

Pachmarhi tourism.

Pachmarhi is the only hill station and is the highest point in Madhya Pradesh. Pachmarhi is also often known as "Satpura ki Rani" or the "Queen of the Satpura Range". Situated at an altitude of 1,067 metres, the picturesque town is a part of UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, home to leopards and bison.

Five sandstone cut caves on the hilltop are believed to be the spot where Pandavas stayed in Pachmarhi during their exile, making it a popular spot among religious tourists. Being at an elevated height and surrounded by bewitching forests of the Satpuras with the streams and waterfalls, Pachmarhi is a perfect weekend getaway from the nearby cities of Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra. Since the town was discovered and developed in modern times by Captain James Forsyth of the British Army, it houses charming churches built in colonial style architecture.

Hotel news from la gomera, mykonos: picture perfect but pricey, new direct uk charter flights to cuba, pachmarhi travel guide, india.

Shreya Patel

This Pachmarhi Travel Guide is from guest author Shreya Patel. Here is what she had to say about Pachmarhi – a hill station in Madhya Pradesh in the very heart of India :

Pachmarhi, Queen of Satpura or Satpura ki Rani (in Hindi ), has an abundance of eye-tempting attractions to explore. Although the place is lesser known, once you visit Pachmarhi, its beauty will leave you in awe.  The good thing is that the government has kept it in the same condition, which means a plethora of unadulterated natural beauty for all travel junkies. Encompassed with lush greenery, rich wildlife, pristine waterfalls and picturesque landscapes, this Central Indian spot offers a high level of tranquillity for those who prefer hill stations over beaches.

So, being a wanderlust Indian myself, I am always keen on exploring those untraversed spots and so my curiosity led me to this beauty. I visited Pachmarhi with my family and booked a local gipsy camp to enjoy the beauty of this place better. We covered several attractions and I must say, the warmth and remarkable aura of Pachmarhi left me awestruck and happy.

In this Pachmarhi Travel Guide, I will be listing all the places you must visit when heading to this beautiful undiscovered part of India.

An Introduction to Pachmarhi

Located at a height of 1607 meters above sea level, Pachmarhi is in the second largest state, Madhya Pradesh. Since it’s the only hill station and the highest point in the state, it serves as a vantage point and is the most visited by locals and tourists across the nation.

The place is also home to wild animals – leopards and bison. The town isn’t very large and is a perfect cosy retreat for tourists from metropolitan cities.

Pachmarhi Travel Guide Facts

Some amazing fun facts I learned about this place are:

Pachmarhi was named a Biosphere reserve by UNESCO in May 2009.

A lot of cave paintings found in the caves of Pachmarhi are believed to be about 10,000 years old.

Dhoopgarh is the highest peak point of this hill station. During my trip, I visited here during sunset, and I can say that the views from the peak were unmatchable.

The name of this place, Pachmarhi, is derived from the words “Panch (Five) and Marhi (Caves)”.

Many Bollywood movies have been shot in this beautiful location. When I visited Reechgarh, a local guide told me that scenes of the popular movie Ashoka the Great, (starring Shah Rukh Khan & Kareena Kapoor), were shot here.

Bee Falls Pachmarhi

Amongst the count of waterfalls, the Bee Falls Pachmarhi is the most renowned. Also known as Jamuna Prapat, it offers the most extreme tranquillity one could ask for. The hiking trail, which is a wonderland in itself, leads visitors to this waterfall. Amid the trail, you’ll see 2-3 picturesque spots. Tourists here can be often found pushing and shoving to get a click with the mesmerizing view, especially the first-timers.

People sit and relax by the brooklet, while many dip their feet in the water and enjoy fish offering a very natural and free pedicure. It may be a little exhausting to hike down to the Bee Falls Pachmarhi, but as you arrive, the drizzle from the fall, the soothing sounds of gushing water, and the view will be enough to take away the fatigue.

Jatashankar Caves – A Lord Shiva Temple

The Jatashankar Caves is the most sacred Hindu pilgrimage site. It is said to be the place where Lord Shiva concealed himself from the wrath of Bhasmasur. Although it’s a long walk to reach the temple entrance, it’s all worth it. On the way to the entrance, you will come across street sellers selling different items such as pipe fryums, papad, labdo ber, and herbal oil.

Here at the Jatashankar Caves, water seeps from the rock above and flows into the temple’s courtyard, making one’s feet numb. You may come across a lady, who sits on the cliff, and chants mantras of Lord Shiva, and her voice echoes can be heard throughout the entire cave. There is a cave built in the rock, from which you have to stoop to reach and worship before the idol of Lord Shiva.

Jatashankar Caves, India

Bade Mahadev Caves

Sitting in the lap of rugged nature is this Lord Shiva shrine, which goes by the name of the Bade Mahadev Caves. The temple also consists of the idols of Lord Brahma, Vishnu, and Ganesha, which are of major significance in the Hindu religion. At the entrance to the cave, there is a lot of Trishuls and Damru, symbolizing the tenacity of Lord Shiva.

Natural water streams inside the cave, which forms a holy pool. It is believed that whoever bathes in this pool, can wash away their sins. Here also, you will have to stoop to get to the end point of the cave, where you will find the idol of Mahadev and all the above-mentioned Gods.

As an extra travel tip for your visit to the Bade Mahadev Caves, beware of the monkeys roaming around, as they can snatch your food and bag.

Bade Mahadev Caves, India

Pandav Gufa Caves

Pandav Caves or Gufa are well renowned and have a reference to Indian mythological characters Pandavas, hence the name. These caves are said to be the place where Pandavas ( 5 sons of Kunti ) stayed during their exile period. It is now a protected tourist spot, and people from all over India visit here to witness this place. Built in the 9th century, these caves are adorned by beautiful sculptures and ancient carvings.

A pathway from a large beautiful garden leads to the Caves.  Here you can see a group of five small caves, covered with grills, and carved on a hilltop. The caves are covered with lush greenery and provide a tranquil aura away from bustling cities.

This was, however, the least interesting place for me in Pachmarhi.

Pandav Gufa, India

Reechgarh is a huge cave hidden in the folds of Pachmarhi. A myth says that a giant bear (reech in Hindi) used to live in this cave, and hence, a local legend gave this place the name Reechgarh. Here you’ll get to see sunshine peeking through craggy rocks, making it a beautiful place to take pictures. The climb above the cave offers vistas of lush greenery and this cave serves as a natural air conditioner since a cool wind blows through them.

However, to enjoy the best views of this place, you will have to hike down through the streak boulders. And, while doing so, you need to be very careful to avoid tripping over.

Dhoopgarh is the highest point in Pachmarhi and is located at a height of 1352 meters. It serves the most eye-tempting views of the place. It is the best place to admire sunrises and sunsets, and hence, most people come here during these times only. The vistas are truly incredible, and people often enjoy this view with snacks and tea.

However, you can only reach here by trekking up to the peak. The route isn’t easy either. The path passes through certain waterfalls and valleys, therefore making the way as steep and challenging as you can imagine.

For first-time visitors it’s best to visit Dhoopgarp with an experienced Pachmarhi Travel Guide, as the hike can be a little overwhelming.

Pachmarhi, Madhya Pradesh, India

Being one of the most beautiful ravines in central India, Handi Koh is a v-shaped ravine covering a 300-foot-deep precipice in the heart of a dense forest. This place has a rich mythological history and is said to be closely linked with Lord Shiva. Although it was said to be a lake earlier, it dried up due to the wrath of a giant snake. Now Handi Koh is well known for hiking, trekking, horse riding, and photography.

Here you will get a view from the cliff of a ravine laden with trees, and greenery. Local people will hand over binoculars and telescopes for a fee. Indigenous people use a rope to get down into the jungle to get herbs for medicinal virtues.

Best Time to Visit Pachmarhi

The best time to visit Pachmarhi is anytime year-round, thanks to its pleasant weather and topography. The days here are pleasant with chilly nights, which makes it a perfect getaway destination. However it would be best to avoid the monsoon (July to September) since the precipitation is quite high in this region.

In my experience, the best time to visit Pachmarhi would be in the summer season (April to June), which is perfect to escape the dry heat of the plains. Not only is it less crowded, but it also tends to be much cooler as compared to other hotter parts of the country. The weather is just as perfect as any hill station encounters. Plus, what’s the best time to enjoy playing around in waterfalls? It’s always the summer.

How to Reach Pachmarhi

Being the only hill station of Madhya Pradesh, it’s the most visited and hence is well connected with major cities of the region. Bhopal is one of the nearest cities to reach here (210 km). Those taking a flight from Delhi, Mumbai or any other Indian city, can utilize Raja Bhoj Airport to reach Bhopal and then take a taxi to Pachmarhi (which is a 4-hour drive).

If you’re someone who prefers travelling by train, then a useful Pachmarhi Travel Guide tip is to take a train to reach Pipariya Railway Station, the closest to Pachmarhi (only 54 km). This train station is linked directly with several major stations including Varanasi, Surat, Delhi, Nagpur, Kolkata, etc. When you reach Pipariya, take a taxi to Pachmarhi and you will reach in about an hour.

If you prefer a road trip, then you are most welcome to bring your vehicle. Although driving can be exhausting, you will get to enjoy the stunning vistas as you drive. Remember that the travelling time will depend upon the traffic and whether you make stops in the middle.

For the road route, you can also opt for a bus ride. Yes, several state-owned and private buses are accessible for Pachmarhi from nearby cities like Bhopal, Jabalpur, Nagpur, Indore, and renowned tourist attractions like Kanha National Park and Pench National Park. Being a cantonment town, the road conditions here are quite phenomenal.

Accommodations in Pachmarhi

It makes sense that being a popular spot amongst the locals and tourists, there are a handful of accommodations accessible in Pachmarhi. From budget stays to chic hotels, there is a suitable option for everyone. That said, budgeted hotels are available for a stay starting from INR 600 to INR 1500. Although these hotels are affordable the quality of stay provided isn’t questionable.

But for me, the budget wasn’t the issue, so I decided to book a lavish hotel. And since hill stations call for a chic stay with a mind-blowing view from the balcony, I went for a hotel that offers the same. Fortunately, there are plenty of incredible options nearby Satpura National Park, Dhoopgarh, and Pandav Caves. And since hill stations call for a chic stay with a mind-blowing balcony view, I went for a hotel that offers the same.

Final Takeaway

I have always preferred natural beauty over man-made attractions and this place offered it all. And indeed, a trip to a cosy hill station can better rejuvenate your entire soul. Pachmarhi is truly a gem brimming with a myriad of remarkable attractions and offers the most tranquil vistas you could ask for.

The best thing I realized here was that even with an excessive population, such a mesmerizing gift of nature still exists in the country. If you’re in India or ever plan to visit here, then make sure to spend some time exploring the beauty of this hill station.

Not only will this place offer you peace, but will take you a step closer to the tales of Indian mythology. I will also recommend you carry strong grip shoes for rugged trails, sunglasses and a hat to avoid being smothered in dust, as well as some motion sickness tablets.

Known for the mighty hills that surround the region, the town is filled with places that can easily take you away from your stressful lives and make your hard-to-get holidays a memorable one.

Top sights in Pachmarhi

Pachmarhi is one of the most popular destinations in the Heart of Incredible India and is a treasure trove of rich history and nature's bounty. Some of the prominent tourist attractions in Pachmarhi include the ' Pandavs Caves ' believed to be built by the Pandavas who lived here along with their wife Draupadi during their exile.

To make your vacation unforgettable, witness the gorgeous sunset at Dhoopgarh, the highest point in the Satpura Range, situated at an altitude of 1350 m. This place is a prominent tourist attraction throughout the year but during the monsoon season the experience of visiting Dhoopgarh becomes more magical as the place is enveloped by puffy monsoon clouds and lush green forests.

Another point of interest is the stone-formed Jata Shankar cave, deriving its name from the peculiar rock formation that looks like the matted dreadlocks of Lord Shiva. As per folklore, it is where Lord Shiva was supposed to have hidden from the Demon Bhasmasur.  Towards the end of the cave is a curious rock formation that looks like the taut hood of a cobra, locally believed to be the 'Sheshnag'.

Waterfalls in Pachmarhi

If you are fond of Waterfalls, then you must keep Bee Falls, Apsara Vihar Falls and Silver falls in your Pachmarhi itinerary. Silver Falls, aka Rajat Prapat, is falling from a height of 350 feet and looks like a silver strip when sunlight falls on it, hence is called Silver Falls.

Apsara Vihar Falls is just a 10-minute downhill trail and one of the must-visit falls in Pachmarhi. It is believed that during the British era, British ladies used to bathe here. The ladies being fair, the locals thought of them to be apsaras and hence the pool was named Apsara Vihar.

Bee Falls also known as the Jamuna Prapat is the most magnificent waterfall and is just 5 km from the Pachmarhi bus stand. Cascading down from a height of 150 feet, the fall is named as such because from a distance the waterfall sounds like a bee as the water flows through the rocks and makes a buzzing sound.

From spiritual sites and gushing waterfalls to panoramic vantage points, Pachmarhi has something for everyone. Besides scenic beauty, you can enjoy Adventure Activities like Jeep Safari in Satpura Tiger Reserve . To add more thrill to your trip you can also try paramotoring, ATV bike rides, Paragliding, Rock Climbing and much more in the heart of Pachmarhi. If old architecture is what excites you then you must-see  Christ Church , a true blue building from the colonial era that cannot be missed!

Pachmarhi Tourism

An Introduction to Pachmarhi

Pachmarhi is a tranquil hill station in Madhya Pradesh, surrounded by the lofty hills of the Satpura range. The landscape of this town is largely characterized by deep ravines, large jungles, and rugged hills. With the right Pachmarhi holiday packages, you can visit and explore this verdant jewel of the hills and experience a breathtaking amalgamation of nature’s beauty and some significant historical wonders.

The Experience

Even the history of this town has quite a fateful story, something you will come to know of while exploring this place with a Pachmarhi sightseeing package . It was during the freedom struggle of India when the queen of Jhansi had called for mutiny, that a group of soldiers led by Captain James Forsyth was sent to the dense Satpura jungles in an effort to quell the impending rebellion. After this band of soldiers had been walking for a while, Captain Forsyth chanced upon a saucer-shaped plateau at an elevation of about 2000 feet above sea level. This was the region that was then developed into the hill station that is today known as Pachmarhi. In older times, this hill station used to be a sanatorium for the British troops posted in the central provinces of the country.

Pachmarhi gets its name from the Hindi words, “Panch” (five) and “Marhi” (caves). According to some legends, the caves in Pachmarhi were built by the five Pandava brothers during their thirteen years of exile. Pachmarhi is currently home to many indigenous tribes, including the Gond, Korku, and Bharia tribes.

Being a popular tourist retreat there are several options available in Pachmarhi tour packages and prices, so you should not find it difficult to book a holiday that fits your budget and plans perfectly. People often come to the town drawn by the urge to see enchanting cave paintings, some of which are estimated to be about 10,000 years old. Pachmarhi is quite rich in flora and fauna as well and houses several mammal species, including wild boars, leopards, tigers, and muntjac deer. Due to the enchanting natural beauty of this region, several well-known movies have also been shot here.

Things to Do in Pachmarhi

When you book your Pachmarhi tour package, you will have the chance to explore several of the intriguing attractions in Pachmarhi. To help you choose the right Pachmarhi tour package, here are some of the top spots in the town, which you can add to your itinerary:

Pandav Gufa:

There are five distinct rock-cut temples in Pachmarhi that are popularly known as Pandav Gufas or caves. According to certain mythological tales, it is believed that the Pandavas took shelter in these caves during their exile, and hence are popular tourist sites. Archaeological evidence, on the other hand, claims that these caves were constructed by Buddhist monks sometime during the 1st century BC. Regardless of their origin, the caves are a must-visit destination for all visitors on Pachmarhi tours.

Handi Khoh:

A popular element of most Pachmarhi tours; this is a deep ravine that has a depth of about 300 ft. Handi Khoh is located in the beautiful Pachmarhi forest region, and has a rugged cliff surrounding it. This tourist site is extremely popular for its marvelous natural beauty.

Rajendragiri Sunset Point:

This captivating sunset point has been named after the former Indian president, Dr. Rajendra Prasad, who used to be quite a frequent visitor to this site. The Rajendragiri Sunset Point is famed for offering awe-inspiring and panoramic views of Panchmarhi. Viewing the sunrise or sunset from this site is a breathtaking experience.

Priyadarshini Point:

A key element of Pachmarhi packages, this site offers a beautiful view of the whole Pachmarhi valley. Captain Forsyth essentially discovered Pachmarhi from this very spot. Priyadarshini Point would be another ideal place to witness the sunset against the regal Satpura Range.

Gupt Mahadev Temple:

This is a 40 feet long cave that features a Shiva lingam. The entrance to the Gupt Mahadev Temple is an extremely narrow path, which can be passed by eight people at a time. This path leads to the ‘Bade Mahadev’ that is featured here. At the entrance of the cave, you can also find an enshrined idol of Lord Hanuman. This auspicious temple is regarded as being an important element of any Pachmarhi tour itinerary.

Jatashankar:

This natural cave is a Hindu shrine located in the northern part of Pachmarhi. Jatashankar lies in a deep ravine, with large boulders perched just above it. This cave is famed for featuring stalagmites, which are revered as naturally formed lingams. Jatashankar caves are incredibly popular among both tourists and pilgrims and are covered by many Pachmarhi sightseeing packages. There are two beautiful spring-fed ponds near these caves as well.

History of Pachmarhi

The Pandavas of the Mahabharata are known to have lived in the panch (five) madhis (caves), hence the name Pachmarhi. According to legend, the Pandavas spent much of their exile in the five caves. Pachmarhi had faded from public consciousness until the early colonial era when a British captain of the Bengal Lancers stumbled upon its unspoilt beauty. Captain James Forsyth and his soldiers faced off against the powerful Rani Lakshmibai of Jhansi in 1857. But along the way, his troops encountered unexpected terrain. Lush green undergrowth replaced the barren tree trunks and dry yellow grass. Ferns and moss covered the damp banks of streams that flowed with clean, cool mountain water, providing a welcome respite for his thirsty and exhausted warriors.

Forsyth described this mountain beauty as "as far as the eye can see lie range upon range of forest-covered hills, tumbled in wild confusion."

Our introduction to Madhya Pradesh, the heart of India was through the Pachmarhi trip. A few days of leaves during the Durga Puja led to a plan of Panchmarhi. This blog is about our trip to Pachmarhi or the Queen of Satpura and all the places to visit in Pachmarhi. We have tried to include as much information to make this guide as helpful as possible.

The “Queen of Satpuras” or “ Satpura ki Rani ”, as it is fondly called is a treasure in itself. Yes, I am talking about Pachmarhi, the most popular hill station in Madhya Pradesh . The official website of Madhya Pradesh Tourism has given Pachmarhi the moniker “ the tallest and only Queen of Satpura ” and we cannot agree more. A pristine hill station, Pachmarhi appears as a cool oasis in the midst of an otherwise warm and hot Madhya Pradesh. Not only the climate but also the landscape of Panchmarhi differs from other regions in the state.

Pachmarhi Post Office

No wonder, when Captain James Forsyth of Bengal Lancers chanced upon Pachmarhi in 1862 while heading towards Jhansi, he was quick to appreciate its beauty and natural charm and reported to his superiors. The British then developed Pachmarhi as a sanatorium for the British troops. Later the British developed Pachmarhi as a cantonment area and summer retreat for the central provinces, just as they did in case of Darjeeling, Kurseong and Ooty. It was quite obvious that the hot and humid weather conditions of Indian plains were not suitable for the British and wherever they found any place with a milder climate, they built a resort town there. Later Colonel Forsyth also praised the beauty of Pachmarhi elaborately in his book “ The Highlands of Central India ”.

The Bison Lodge is the oldest standing building in Pachmarhi. It was built by Captain Forsyth. He used it as a forest lodge to explore the surrounding. He founded the forest department of Madhya Pradesh province . The Bison Lodge now serves as a museum depicting the flora and fauna of the area.

Pachmarhi and Legends

Like the majority of Indian destinations, Pachmarhi also has a mythological legend behind its name. As per Mahabharata, the Pandavas were forced into exile after losing everything in a game of dice to their cousin brothers and arch enemies Kauravas. They were to live in anonymity for a year. It is said that during their exile, the 5 Pandava brothers had visited Pachmarhi and found 5 caves for their shelter. So ‘ Pach ‘ means five and ‘ marhi ‘ means shelter . So these 5 caves still exist in Pachmarhi and are a major tourist attraction now.

Apart from the 5 caves, Pachmarhi is the home to many other small and big caves, numerous beautiful waterfalls and a lot of greenery. Located at an altitude of 1100 m, the small hill station is the highest in altitude in Madhya Pradesh. Pachmarhi is also a part of the Satpura National Park and so you can visit to some of the best wildlife destinations in India from here. If these reasons are not enough to entice you to take a Pachmarhi trip, let me start off with the best places to visit in Pachmarhi. Later in the post, I will share our Pachmarhi itinerary as well.

Best Places to Visit in Pachmarhi

True to its name, Pachmarhi is a quaint hill station in the lap of Satpuras and is the home to many caves as well as waterfalls. I have been rambling about the beauty of this hill station since long. Now here are the list of some unmissable spot and places to visit in Pachmarhi.

Rajat Prapat Waterfall

Rajat Prapat or Silver Falla in Pachmarhi

Rajat Prapat, also known as the Silver Falls is visually quite stunning. Falling from a height of 350 feet (107 m), the waterfall looks like a silver strip when sunlight falls on it and hence the name. The waterfall is said to be the 30th  highest waterfall in India and is surrounded with lush greenery.

The falls is on the other side of the mountain. You can actually do to the top of the falls by a trekking route through the forest. A guide is required if you wish to trek to the falls. There are a few caves on the hiking route where cave paintings are said to be found. We did not trek all the way up to the Rajat Prapat but saw the water cascading in a single drop from a distance. I am sure trekking along these parts will be quite a novel experience.

Apsara Vihar Falls

Apsara Vihar Waterfall Pachmarhi

Another beautiful waterfall that you must visit in your Pachmarhi trip is the Apsara Vihar Falls. A 10 minute downhill trail will take you to the waterfall. The Apsara Vihar or Fairy Pool has an interesting trivia behind it.

It is believed that during the British era, British ladies used to come here for a bath.  The locals used to sneak at them. The ladies being fair, the locals thought of them to be apsaras or fairies. Hence the pool was named “Apsara Vihar”! So much for fairies!

Anyways, Apsara Vihar is still one of the favourite places for locals and tourists alike. There is a pool below the waterfall where people enjoys diving and swimming.

Bee Fall or Jamuna Prapat

Pachmarhi is a place with a lot of waterfalls and Bee Falls is one of the most picturesque ones. Also known as the Jamuna Prapat, a visit here was one of the best points in our Pachmarhi trip. The waterfall is 150 feet in height and is one of the most magnificent waterfalls of Panchmarhi. We hiked downhill about a kilometer to reach the base of the waterfall and once there, we were simply left awestruck. Water was gushing down at a great force to a pool beneath. And many people were having a good time in the pool. After contemplating for some time, we finally gave in to the temptation and headed towards the pool under the waterfall. I am sure you can imagine how amazing the experience was!

Pandava Caves

Pandava Caves Pachmarhi

Pandava Caves is said to be one of the top tourist places to visit in Pachmarhi. With all the mythology and legend behind the five caves, the place has become one of the must-visit places in Pachmarhi trip. As I mentioned before, it is the place where the 5 Pandava brothers took shelter during a part of their exile. It is also believed that later in 1 st Century AD, some Buddhist monks also took shelter in these caves.

We found the Pandava Caves to be quite overrated. There is a flight of stairs leading to the caves. The caves were quite small in size and I kept wondering how Bheema, the brother known for his huge physique would enter and fit into such a small cave! I guess some questions are better left unanswered. Nevertheless, the view from the top is good and the garden in front of the caves is beautiful.

Sunset at Dhoopgarh in Pachmarhi - Places to visit in Pachmarhi

If you are fond of sunsets, then you must keep Dhoopgarh in your Pachmarhi itinerary. Dhoopgarh is the highest point in the Satpura ranges and is the best place to watch a sunset in Pachmarhi. Dhoopgarh also gives a 360-degree view of the surrounding areas.

Dhoopgarh was quite busy and crowded when we went for the sunset. Unfortunately for us, the day was a bit cloudy, but it was lovely to see the orange and red hue over the green mountains. We missed a great sunset, but we had some beautiful experiences.

Jata Shankar Caves

Jata Shankar Pachmarhi

Jata Shankar Caves is another good place to visit in Pachmarhi trip. It is a natural cave located in deep ravines with huge boulders perched over it.  A reclusive place surrounded by hills, the caves have almost 108 Shiva Lingas formed naturally.

There are 2 theories about the name of the cave. While mythological legend says that Lord Shiva had left a part of his Jata (hair) at this place while he concealed himself from Bhasmasur here. Hence the name of the place is Jata Shankar. The second one says that the stalactites and stalagmites formed inside the cave looks like the matted hair or Jata of Lord Shiva. Hence the name of the cave is given, Jata Shankar. Your faith will make you believe either or neither of the stories. But it is good to listen to such mythological stories in places such as these.

Water drops from the top of the cave and there are 2 pools inside the cave. You have to bend down to visit the shrines inside the cave. The temperature inside the caves is quite low and so it feels very comfortable there after coming from the sun. The naturally made cave is the real wonder of this place.

Handi Khoh or Suicide Point in Pachmarhi

Handi Khoh is the unofficial suicide point of Pachmarhi. Well, don’t be alarmed. After all our travel throughout India, we have found that the majority of the hill stations have a suicide point, irrespective of the fact whether anyone ever committed suicide from there or not. The place is usually a beautiful cliff or gorge that looks down to some deep crevasse. The place is no doubt dangerous for selfie-loving people. A fall from such suicide points would be near mortal.

Anyways, Handi Khoh is a beautiful 300 feet deep V-shaped ravine created by 2 forested hills. The place is quite beautiful and you can see the green Satpura ranges at a distance. The place is a famous spot for photography and horse riding now. Chauragarh is visible at a distance from here.

Gupt Mahadeo or Chhota Mahadeo

Gupt Mahadeo Pachmarhi

Gupt Mahadeo is an interesting place. The place is actually a temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is a 40 feet long and narrow cave where a Shiva lingam and a Ganesha idol are enshrined.  The cave is so narrow that we had to enter it sideways. Only eight people are allowed to enter the caves at a time. Once we entered inside Gupt Mahadeo, it was all dark, cold and felt as if we had arrived at some ancient era. Well, it was a different kind of experience at Gupt Mahadeo as well as Jata Shankar Cave.

There is a narrow path which leads to the Bade Mahadeo from the Gupt Mahadeo, though tourists are not allowed to use this path.

Bada Mahadev

Shiva Parvati idol at Bada Mahadeo Pachmarhi

Bada Mahadev is another temple dedicated to Lord Shiva located at some distance from the Chhota Mahadev or Gupt Mahadeo. This cave is about 60 feet long. Large idols of Lord Brahma, Vishnu, Mahesh and Lord Ganesha are enshrined inside the cave.  A serpentine road leads to the Bade Mahadeo temple. It is a wonder to see that water constantly falls upon the Shiv Linga inside the cave. A kund is also situated in the middle of the cave. There is another cave situated near bade Mahadeo, the cave of Goddess Parvati.

Trivia: According to Hindu mythology, it is believed that Lord Vishnu incarnated as Mohini Killed the demon King Bhasmasur here. Bade Mahadeo thus holds a significant place to the worshippers of Lord Shiva. Many people visit Bade Mahadev Temple during the festival of Shivaratri.

Reechgarh Panchmarhi

Reechgarh is a natural amphitheatre. It is a natural cavern having an opening at both ends. We had to scramble amidst boulders and stones while entering the place.  The exit is also quite interesting where we had to cross a narrow canyon. Reechgarh is a natural wonder and it did not disappoint us in our Pachmarhi trip.

Priyadarshini Point

Way to Priyadarshini Point Panchmarhi

Priyadarshini Point was earlier known as the Forsyth Point. It is from this place that Captain James Forsyth had ‘discovered’ Pachmarhi. Just imagine, one fine day, he came to this region, stood at the same place where I might have been standing and thought ‘Oh, what a beautiful place’! Well, we could also the same thing about the place because it offers one of the most beautiful and breathtaking views of Pachmarhi.

Later, Mrs Indira Gandhi had visited the spot in 1964 and admired the beauty of Pachmarhi from here. She must have had the same thoughts as Captain Forsyth. And then the place was renamed Priyadarshini Point after Mrs Gandhi.

Pachmarhi Catholic Church

Pachmarhi Church - Pachmarhi Travel Guide

Amidst all the greenery and waterfalls and caves, Pachmarhi town is also breathtakingly beautiful. Being a part of a British resort town, Panchmarhi has some beautiful colonial architecture. The Catholic Church is one example. The church was said to have built in the 19 th century and is almost 150 years old. The church looks old from a distance but has such an old-worldly charm to it. It was something that we saw in Bilaspur as well.

The church remains open only for a few hours on Sunday morning for mass and prayers.

Chauragarh Temple

Chauragarh - Places to visit in Pachmarhi

Chauragarh Temple is another revered temple in Pachmarhi area located at an altitude of 1326 m. The temple dedicated to Lord Shiva is located atop a hill surrounded by hills, forests and verdant valley. Chauragarh Peak is also the second-highest peak in the Satpura region.

There are 2 ways to reach the temple. The traditional way is to climb around 1300 odd stairs to the top of the hill to the temple. The other way is more adventurous where you have to trek through the forests to reach the temple. Once you reach the temple, you will see several tridents or Trishuls kept at the courtyard.

Chauragarh is quite revered by the Shaivites and receives a number of pilgrims during the Maha Shivratri and Nag Panchami Festivals. The devotees often carry trishuls on their back as a part of some religious rituals.

Satpura National Park

Queen of Satpura

The Satpura National Park is a good place for wildlife lovers and a must-visit on your Pachmarhi trip if you visit during the season. The huge national park spread across 202 sq miles is the home to a variety of flora. The Denwa River flows through the national park and you have to cross the river during the safari.

The national park is also the natural habitat of bison, spotted deer, elephants, leopards, tigers, sloth bear, four-horned antelopes and various migratory birds.

Now that you have a fair idea of the places to visit in Pachmarhi, let me share the experience of our Pachmarhi trip and a tentative itinerary.

Our Pachmarhi Trip Experience

It was the Durga Puja and we were already late for getting train tickets for any destination. All the tickets to NJP were waitlisted with very fewer chances of confirmation. After much thought and deliberation, we decided to venture to Madhya Pradesh. It was our first trip to the state and we were pretty excited. We zeroed on to Pachmarhi and Jabalpur for our week-long trip.

Way to Priyadarshini Point Pachmarhi, Queen of Satpura

We first visited Jabalpur and explored Bhedaghat and the Chausath Yogini Temple there. From Jabalpur, we took a train towards Pipariya, the nearest railway station to Pachmarhi. We were supposed to reach by evening, but like most Indian trains at those days, the train was extremely late. We finally reached quite late at night. We hired a car from the Pipariya station and it took us to the MTDC resort where we were booked.

Well, Pachmarhi has some of the best resorts of Madhya Pradesh Tourism . I will come to that in the later part of the post.

The next 2 days, we totally enjoyed exploring Pachmarhi. It was more special as it was our first time in Madhya Pradesh and was different from our usual visits to North Bengal. We took a Maruti Gypsy for exploring the place. We shared the Gypsy with another couple and their cute little daughter.

An Ideal Pachmarhi Itinerary for 2 days

I am giving the Pachmarhi Itinerary as we did it in 2 days.

Reach Pachmarhi.

We had our breakfast at the resort and started for our Pachmarhi trip. We first stopped at Rajat Prapat or Silver Falls. From there, it was a few minutes’ walk to the Apsara Vihar. The next stop was Bee Falls. We also wanted to visit the Duchess Fall. But the waterfall was deep inside the forest and the path was not good at that time because of late monsoon. We had to skip Duchess Falls on this trip.

Paragliding at Pachmarhi, Queen of Satpura

After having a great time at Bee Falls, we returned to our hotel for lunch. Pachmarhi is a small town and the places are more or less nearby each other.

Post lunch session began with our visit to Reechgarh and then finally to Dhoopgarh to enjoy the beautiful sunset. Dhoopgarh was a real respite after all the monkeying around at the waterfalls. After sunset, we were back at our resort.

The day started with a visit to Gupt Mahadeo followed by Bade Mahadev.

Next in line was the suicide point or Handi Khoh and Priyadarshini Viewpoint followed by the most overrated places to visit in Pachmarhi according to us – the Pandava Caves.

After Pandava Caves, we visited Jata Shankar Caves. It was better after our disappointment at Pandava Caves.

It was lunchtime next. But we stopped at the Pachmarhi Church before returning for lunch.

Post lunch we visited Chauragarh. Well, it was not quite a good decision to visit Chauragarh after lunch. I had a tough time climbing the stairs after a heavy meal. By the time we were on the top, I was starving again!

After Chauragarh, we returned to our resort. Our Pachmarhi trip also ended with this. We did not visit the Satpura National Park as it was not open at that time.

If you are taking your Pachmarhi trip in the between October to May, you can keep a day extra to visit Satpura National Park as well.

Dhoopgarh Panchmarhi, Queen of Satpura

Panchmarhi is a beautiful hill station away from the hustle-bustle of the cities and a perfect place for a two-day trip. Even a walk down the roads of Panchmarhi will make you feel good and jubilant. The waterfalls and the naturally formed caves and rocky structures are the major attractions. It was a perfect trip for us. It was not strenuous like our usual trekking programmes, also it had a few hikes which we really liked. Panchmarhi was thus a break from our usual travels and we really welcomed it.

Pachmarhi Travel Tips

How to reach pachmarhi.

The nearest airport to Pachmarhi is Bhopal’s Raja Bhoj Airport about 200 km.

Jabalpur’s Dumna Airport is about 250 km away from Pachmarhi.

Nearest railway station to Pachmarhi is Pipariya which is about 52 km away from Pachmarhi. Pipariya railway station is on Howrah-Mumbai mainline and almost all passing-by trains use to stop here. Transfer from Pipariya to Pachmarhi is much difficult. Private and public carrier Jeeps and Buses are available at Pipariya Railway Station all the time for heading towards Pachmarhi and vice versa at reasonable charges.

Pachmarhi is well connected with Jabalpur, Bhopal, Nagpur and Chindwara by road. Nagpur is about 250 km from Pachmarhi. There is Madhya Pradesh State Buses plying from Panchmarhi to Jabalpur and Nagpur at fixed times.

Interesting Milestone at Pipariya

Those who love history and heritage like us would find an interesting and old milestone in Pipariya from the British era. The milestone has inscriptions on three sides and the distances are measured in miles as it was done during the British era. After the British left India in 1947, that kilometers were adopted as distance markers.

The milestone is located near the MTDC Tourist Lodge in Pipariya. Apart from the distances, the milestone also gives information about the construction of roads and railways there. It says Pachmarhi Sadak (Road) 1870, Pipariya Rail 8.3.1870. These dates are perhaps the date of construction of these roadways and railways.

Where to Stay in Pachmarhi?

As I said before, the MP Tourism hotels are the best places to stay in Panchmarhi not only because of their hospitality but also for their beautiful locations.

The Rock End manor is the most beautiful and high-end property there.

There are also many private hotels available in the market area.

What is the best time to visit Pachmarhi?

Pachmarhi being a hill station has a pleasant climate all through the year. The summers between April to June has a pleasant temple. This is the best thing about Pachmarhi. When the rest of Madhya Pradesh is scorching with unbearable heat, Pachmarhi is still pleasant. So the summer months are definitely a good time to visit Pachmarhi.

The monsoon months are between July to September. Pachmarhi looks beautiful and verdant during the monsoon. The rain makes the place even more romantic and ethereal. The waterfalls look better and bigger. Roads to some of them might be bad, but the overall ambience is absolutely mesmerizing during the monsoon. I always believe that monsoon brings out the best in some places like Bangriposi, Darjeeling and Pachmarhi as well.

October (autumn) is also a good time to visit Pachmarhi. Infact, we had visited at the beginning of October. The weather remains pleasant and clear. The landscape is still green after the monsoon. We did not need any woollens during our visit in October.

November to February (winter months) are colder. You would need your winter clothes during this time.

Also if you want to visit the Satpura National Park, then you must plan your Pachmarhi trip between October and May.

pachmarhi tour and travels

Pachmarhi (पचमढ़ी Pacmaṛhī ) is a city in Madhya Pradesh . It is the only hill station in the central region of India, in the Satpura range, 3,500 ft (1,100 m) above sea level. Pachmarhi is called Satpura ki Rani meaning Queen of Satpura .

The area was discovered in the modern times by Captain James Forsyth of the British army along with Subhedar Major Nathooramji Powar (who was later made Kothwal of Pachmarhi) In 1857, Pachmarhi became a hill station and sanatorium for British troops in the Central Provinces of India. The population in 1901 was 3020, doubling during the hot summer months. Pachmarhi also served as the summer capital.

Pachmarhi is a tourist retreat; its elevation from the sea level and the forests of the Satpuras, with their streams and waterfalls, are picturesque and home to much wildlife. Pachmarhi lies within the Pachmarhi Biosphere Preserve, created in 1999 to link two forest reserves and Satpura National Park into a larger wildlife conservation area. It also has Dhupgarh -- the highest point in Central India.

Pachmarhi also has a lot of cave paintings in the forests, some of which have been dated to be as much as 10,000 years old.

By bus [ edit ].

Pachmarhi can also be reached directly by bus from Bhopal , which is 210 km away by road, Itarsi or Jabalpur. It can also be reached from Nagpur . The Mahrashtra State Road Transport Corporation has started 2x2 luxury buses, which take 8 hours to reach Pachmarhi.

Get around [ edit ]

Map

While there are several sites within 5-6 km radius, the best way of getting around is to hire a four-wheeler, Maruti Gypsy being the norm in Pachmarhi. Gypsy can be hired through open market or hotel can arrange with Gypsy operators. It gets comfortable if one visits places of heart-attraction in Pachmarhi in their own vehicle.

One excellent and economic option is to share a Gypsy for sightseeing. They make shared tour keeping in mind the preferences of tourists (for example families or couples are not mixed with group of boys). You would really need to look around for providers of shared tours because everyone tries to promote full hire of vehicles.

pachmarhi tour and travels

  • 22.45206 78.44599 1 Apsara Vihar ( Fairy Pool ). Easily accessible from Jai Stambh, this 'fairy pool' is an ideal picnic spot for families with small children, since the pool is shallow, deepening only towards the base of the fall.
  • 22.462881 78.424272 2 Bison Lodge . Constructed in 1862, the Bison Lodge is the oldest house in Pachmarhi. It now houses a beautiful museum depicting the rich flora and fauna of Pachmarhi.
  • 22.46522 78.43197 3 Catholic Church . Built in 1892 by the British, the Catholic Church is a blend of the French and Irish architecture. Its Belgium stained-glass windows add rare attraction and beauty to the building. The church has a cemetery attached to it and graves date from 1859, World War I & II.
  • The Cave Shelters . Some of the best cave shelters and groups of shelters around Pachmarhi are: Dhuandhar, approached from the footpath to Apsara Vihar, the paintings mostly in white include a group of archers with the typical Gond bun and hooped earrings. Bharat Neer (Dorothy Deep), has well executed animal paintings and when excavated in the 1930s yielded many pottery shards and microliths. Asthachal (Monte Rosa), there are four shelters with paintings, comparatively early linear drawings. Along the northern side of Jambu Dwip valley are some six shelters with many paintings of animals and human figures, including a detailed battle scene.
  • Chauragarh . 4 km from Mahadeo, it is one of Satpura's prominent land marks, the summit crowned with emblems of Mahadeo worship.
  • Chhota Mahadeo . Revered as a sacred spot, this is a narrow point in the valley with rocks overhanging a stream and a spring from where water cascades down.
  • 22.4685 78.4279 4 Christ Church . Built in 1875 by the British, this Church's architecture is fascinating; its 'sanctum-sanctorum' has a hemispherical dome on top with its ribs ending with faces of angels. The stained glass panes adorning the walls and rear of the altar were imported from Europe. They present a gorgeous view as the sun rays pass through them. The nave of the church does not contain even a single pillar for support. The baptismal font is a rare brass piece and the bell is as old as the church and its chimes can be heard from a long distance.
  • 22.449444 78.373056 5 Dhoopgarh . The highest point in the Satpura range, with a magnificent view of the surrounding ranges. A very popular spot for viewing sunsets.
  • 22.439988 78.425045 6 Handi Khoh . Pachmarhi's most impressive ravine has a 300 feet high precipice and dramatically steep sides.
  • Harper's Cave . So named because of one of its paintings - a man seated and playing a harp is close to the Jata Shankar Shrine. The Chieftain's Cave derives its name from a battle scene showing two chieftains on horses. A terrace that runs the length of the South, South East and East faces of Kites Crag has some fine cave paintings, the majority of which are in white or outlined in red.
  • Irene Pool . This pool was discovered by Irene Bose, wife of Justice Vivian Bose, and named after her. The route upstream leads to a cave, through which the stream goes underground and then over a khud in a series of falls.
  • Jalawataran ( Duchess Falls ). The descent is steep and the trek strenuous for almost all of the 4 km to the base of the fall's first cascade.
  • 22.47405 78.40858 7 Jamuna Prapat ( Bee Fall ). A spectacular fall in the stream which provides drinking water to Pachmarhi. The bathing pools above the fall are very popular.
  • 22.48062 78.44058 8 Jata Shankar . A sacred cave under a mass of loose boulders in which the Jambu Dwip stream has its source. A rocky formation of this place resembles the matted locks of Lord Shiva, hence the name.
  • Mahadeo . Regarded as holy for countless of generations, Mahadeo hill has a shrine with an idol of Lord Shiva and an impressive Shivlinga. On the East side of the hill is an excellent cave shelter with beautiful cave paintings.
  • 22.45888 78.43287 9 Pandav Caves . Five ancient dwellings excavated in the sandstone rock in a low hill. Pachmarhi derives its name from these caves which, as the legend goes, once provided sanctuary to the five Pandav brothers. These caves are now protected monuments.
  • 22.427388 78.423033 10 Priyadarshini ( Forsyth Point ). This vantage viewing point marks the place from where Pachmarhi was discovered by Captain Forsyth in 1857. The British developed Pachmarhi as a resort and their influence is embodied in its churches and colonial architecture.
  • 22.45627 78.44998 11 Rajat Prapat ( Silver Fall ). Those seeking adventure will find it in this ten-minute walk over rocks and boulders from Apsara Vihar to the top of Rajat Prapat, the 'big fall'.
  • Reechhgarh . A wonderful natural amphitheater in the rock, approached through a cave-like entrance on the South-side.
  • Sangam ( Fuller's Khud - Waters Meet ). This is the lowest of the picnic spots on the Denwa and offers fairly good bathing pools both below and above the meeting of the waters.
  • 22.45317 78.11841 12 Satpura National Park . Set up in 1981, Satpura National Park is 524 sq km in area. It spreads through dense forest of evergreen sal, teak and bamboo. The high peaks of Dhoopgarh and Mahadeo, Bori's legendary teak and bamboo forests, Pachmarhi's fascinating natural beauty of deep valleys, high mountains, rivulets, waterfalls and Tawa's vast reservoir combine to give this park unique beauty and a breathtaking variety of attractions. Should the Middle Seat Passenger Get Both Armrests on a Plane? A Travel Expert Answers the Controversial Question

The debate was recently reignited by a passenger who claimed their flight attendant had specific “armrest rules” in a post shared on Reddit

pachmarhi tour and travels

An airline passenger reignited a classic travel debate after they claimed a flight attendant was enforcing “armrest rules” during their recent trip.

The passenger said the flight attendant told everyone on the plane to use one armrest only , either to the right or left of them depending on where they were sitting, in a post shared to Reddit earlier this month.

“To my surprise, he was very emphatic that no person gets two armrests,” user littleike0 wrote on the forum. They claimed that the crew member’s reasoning for the rule was to “keep the armrest on the aisle clear for carts and people walking down the plane.”

“He emphatically stated that no armrest drama would be tolerated,” the user continued. “Feeling sorry for all the folks in middle seats on this flight, [I] mentioned to my seat mate she was welcome to use both armrests.”

The original poster (OP) ended their retelling by asking their fellow Redditors if they’ve ever heard of these “rules” before. The comments section was quickly flooded with users’ opinionated responses.

“That's a ‘no’ for me. I'm an aisle seater, and that aisle armrest is mine,” one person wrote. “The middle seat gets his/her two, I get mine on the aisle.”

Another added, “I only ride aisle, cause I'm a short stocky wide dude...armrest is mine so I can lean that way, and not on the middle…”

One user asked, “Why do we need rules like this? 🙄 If I’m on the aisle and get bumped it’s my bad.”

Others emphasized that the middle seat passenger should always get both armrests as they have the least amount of space.

“I always assumed the middle seat got both armrests because, let’s be honest, the middle seat SUCKS. I always felt like it was the least I could do for their troubles.”

However, some thought that the flight attendant’s alleged rule did serve a valuable purpose.

“I actually agree with that. It’s always so annoying brushing past people who are leaning out into the aisle.”

PEOPLE spoke to travel advisor Nicole Campoy Jackson of Fora Travel to get to the bottom of the airplane etiquette issue.

“My rule of thumb is: always be considerate of the person in the middle seat,” Jackson says. “If you're in a three-across seating setup on a plane, the window passenger gets the window and window-side armrest; the aisle passenger gets the aisle armrest; and the middle passenger gets to decide how they'd like to use the two in the middle.”

She emphasizes that the middle seat is “claustrophobic enough” and those passengers shouldn’t have to be “relegated to one armrest.”

However, there are situations where sharing the middle armrest may be the best option, according to Jackson.

“If you're a taller person and have a hard time getting comfortable without the use of a bit of that armrest, then there's no harm in sharing. Give the right of way to the middle passenger, but also get comfortable.”

Jackson says that while she understands where the flight attendant is coming from with their rules, there is no reason to avoid the aisle seat armrest for the entire flight.

“I assume that bumping into passengers left and right down the aisle would get annoying for everyone involved. But there are many hours on a plane during which the cart is not being pushed. So, must you avoid that aisle armrest the entire time? Of course not. If you're awake and can scoot in a bit to avoid getting bumped? Then, do!”

Legendary talk show host and hot wing evangelist returns to television with hilarious new Max travel show

Conan O'Brien tries Thai boxing with predictable results.

The key to understanding Conan O’Brien’s comedy is knowing that it comes from a point of kindness. Yes, I know in this age of comics punching down , this kind of compliment may leave you with a neon “Must Avoid!” sign flashing in your bleary eyes — but stay with me.

Popular on Variety

Conan’s three-decade run as a talk show host ended in 2021 under less-than-optimal circumstances , as he wound down his TBS show during the pandemic year. He talked to longtime sidekick Andy Richter , who sat among dozens of cardboard cutout fans. O’Brien quipped that they were last in line for the vaccine because the CDC had looked at the shows and “they said ours is the least essential of pretty much all the non-essential shows.”

There was some truth in that, but Conan had already started his move to other outlets , starting with his “Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend” podcast in 2018.

The podcast is funny and sweet, especially the pre-interview segments with longtime associate Sona Movsesian and producer Matt Gourley. Conan mocks Sona’s legendarily bad work habits. and Gourley’s flea market predilections, but any kind of comedic acid is reserved for the self-lacerating O’Brien. (On a recent episode, Conan runs down his own looks, and it is cruel and hilarious, but part of me is thinking, “Dude, cut yourself a break.”). The only time things get contentious is when Conan visited by longtime friend Kevin Nealon — perhaps the podcast’s best episodes.

The podcast had an offshoot called “Conan O’Brien Needs a Fan,” on which O’Brien would talk to a fan, often in a faraway land. That led to O’Brien traveling to Norway, Thailand, Ireland and Argentina to meet them. Why? Well, a dour and ominous narrator, aka Werner Herzog, offered this rationale at the beginning of each episode: “Once a proud talk show host, he’s been driven by a changing ecosystem to a drier and harsher climate: the weekly podcast. Here , without the nourishment of his studio audience, this clown with dull , tiny eyes, the eye of a crudely painted doll , is forced to feed on that meagerest of morsels: the random call-in fan. Unhinged by the feral scent of their mild enthusiasm. He scavenges in distant lands uninvited, fueled by a bottomless hunger for recognition , and the occasional selfie.”

It’s a self-deprecating bit, but it’s also the truth. Conan has been doing travel shows for years, most notably one to Movsesian’s native Armenia , as well as a chaotic trip to Finland where O’Brien is treated as a god because of his physical resemblance to the Finnish president who happens to be a woman. He clearly loves the journey. And he loves the comedy set piece–see his classic “Old Timey Baseball” opus — which has always been an essential part of his appeal.

The encounters work because O’Brien doesn’t treat his new friends as fools — rather , he revels in the fact that he is the fool. (See his instant-classic appearance on “Hot Ones,” the show where interviews are conducted while the celebrity consumes increasingly acidic chicken wings. Conan rhapsodizes on comedy being all around us as green-yellow mucus drips down his nose.) Of course, there are exceptions made for old friends. Conan goes out for asada in Buenos Aires with the effete and erudite Jordan Schlansky, a longtime producer and frenemy. Schlansky and Conan are the Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon of American cable , and on his TBS show and podcast the two have tangled over Japanese customs, Conan hosting Schlansky’s bachelor party in his own office, and Schlansky hiding an expensive Espresso machine in an inaccessible part of their offices. (As with the Courtney Thorne-Smith segment, Conan’s visceral malice toward Schlansky works because it is so out-of-character).

During the Argentina episode, they get into a fierce argument about the proper pronunciation of the word “tango,” Conan then licks Schlansky’s favorite cut of meat — wait, that came out wrong. After, they go on an ill-fated trip to the Pampas, where both fail spectacularly at gaucho life.

Not everything works. O’Brien does a self-referential bit about the expensive drone he is using on the first show , and for the next four episodes I am distracted every time I see a beautiful shot thinking about the drone’s specifications and capabilities. Some of the stuff goes on a bit long, but so does my writing.

These are minor quibbles. If you’re a Conan fan, you’ll treasure the trips, just like his completists treasure encounters with a masturbating bear. The series ends with Conan tracing his family’s roots in Ireland. He comes across his ancestor’s land, makes a few jokes, but then looks at the land, clearly moved. Conan O’Brien has played the fool long enough; we grant him this moment of humanity with all our hearts.

All four episodes of “Conan O’Brien Must Go” are now available on Max.

Vince McMahon's life after WWE: Kittens, vacations and staying in touch with Trump

Photo Illustration: Vince McMahon and WWE Headquarters

As he faces a mountain of legal woes, former WWE leader Vince McMahon is traveling, eating out and keeping in touch with friends and associates — including former President Donald Trump.

McMahon resigned as executive chairman of World Wrestling Entertainment’s parent company almost three months ago after a former employee, Janel Grant, accused him in a bombshell lawsuit of sexual abuse and trafficking. He denied the allegations. McMahon, 78, is also facing a federal criminal investigation , although he hasn’t been charged.

NBC News and CNBC talked to 11 people familiar with McMahon and WWE about how he’s been spending his time — and how the global brand he built over more than four decades is moving on without him. These people, including close personal associates and company insiders, declined to be named, citing ongoing legal cases and the confidential nature of internal corporate communications.

Multiple WWE insiders said he hasn’t had any contact with company leaders and figureheads since he resigned. Mark Shapiro, the operating chief of WWE parent company TKO Group Holdings, said in March that McMahon “doesn’t work for the company, doesn’t come into the office, and he’s not coming back to the company.”

That also means McMahon hasn’t talked to his son-in-law, WWE creative chief and former superstar Paul “Triple H” Levesque, or daughter, Stephanie McMahon-Levesque, regarding company matters, sources said. While she introduced WWE’s WrestleMania event earlier this month, McMahon-Levesque, who worked beside her father for more than 20 years and played roles in storylines, currently has no involvement with the company, according to people familiar with the matter. Levesque and McMahon-Levesque declined to comment through a spokesperson, as did a WWE representative.

UFC 276: Adesanya v Cannonier

McMahon is nonetheless indelibly linked with the wrestling outfit, which he bought from his father 42 years ago. Still, he seems to have moved on, according to multiple sources. McMahon has kept up his other routines, and it’s as if he’s unfazed by his legal fights, two sources said. For instance, on an afternoon in late March, McMahon returned on a private plane to the United States from the sunny Turks and Caicos Islands -- but he wasn’t alone, according to a person close to him. He had with him seven kittens and a puppy, all of which he brought back to be adopted by his friends, this person added.

“If anything, he’s enjoying life,” said the person, who added that McMahon had also taken a trip to Italy.

Jessica Rosenberg, an attorney for McMahon, declined to comment regarding the aspects of the former WWE chief’s life reported in this article. In an emailed statement Tuesday, however, she criticized Grant’s suit: “The lawsuit’s claims are false, defamatory and entirely without merit. We intend to vigorously defend Mr. McMahon and are confident that he will be vindicated.”

Life amid litigation

The details of McMahon’s life after his WWE reign present a stark contrast to Grant’s accusations, which paint a graphic portrait of a violent and controlling man. In the federal lawsuit, filed Jan. 25, Grant’s attorneys said that she was “the victim of physical and emotional abuse, sexual assault and trafficking at WWE,” naming McMahon and former WWE executive John Laurinaitis. Both men have denied the accusations in the suit. The lawsuit also named WWE as a defendant. WWE and its parent company, TKO, have said that they take Grant’s allegations “very seriously.”

“Vince McMahon raped, trafficked and physically assaulted Janel Grant as part of his decades-long normalization of treating women within the WWE as objects. He might have thought that Janel would just walk away, but that wishful thinking couldn’t be further from the case,” Ann Callis, an attorney for Grant, said in a statement Wednesday. “Every day we are focused on adding to our mountain of evidence, speaking with other victims, hiring renowned experts on sex trafficking/coercive control and preparing to vociferously litigate this case.”

Federal investigators seized a phone from McMahon and have been trying to determine whether federal law was broken in the conduct surrounding Grant’s allegations, NBC News reported in February . WWE had disclosed last summer that investigators served McMahon with a federal grand jury subpoena and executed a search warrant in July.McMahon is cooperating with authorities, according to one of the people close to him. McMahon believes officials won’t bring any charges against him and that Grant’s civil case will be settled out of court, said a person close to the former wrestling executive.

Nicholas Biase, a spokesperson for the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York, declined to comment.

A spokesperson for Grant’s attorneys said that there have been absolutely no settlement talks with McMahon.

Vince McMahon speaks to an audience during a WWE fan appreciation event in Hartford, Conn. on Oct. 30, 2010.

While his legal battles persist, McMahon is often ferried by a private driver from his posh Connecticut home to Manhattan, according to one of the sources close to him. There, he eats with friends at restaurants such as the old-school Italian spot Il Tinello East on 46th Street, sees his longtime barber for biweekly haircuts and works with his personal trainer multiple times a week, the source said.  Two other sources, however, say McMahon has otherwise been “quite guarded” and often on the phone with his lawyers to map out plans since Grant’s lawsuit was made public.

Staying in touch

McMahon has also talked to Trump, according to two of the people close to the wrestling impresario. The two billionaires have been in touch regularly, according to a person close to McMahon, although it isn’t clear what they’ve discussed.

Trump and the McMahon family go way back: The former president hosted two WrestleMania events in Atlantic City in the late 1980s, engaged in a wrestling “feud” with McMahon in 2007 and is a member of the WWE Hall of Fame. Linda McMahon, McMahon’s wife, served as the Small Business Administration’s head in Trump’s Cabinet, led a pro-Trump super PAC and is now on the board of the publicly traded Trump Media and Technology Group.

In 2022, The Wall Street Journal reported that McMahon paid $5 million in previously unrecorded expenses to the since-dissolved Donald J. Trump Foundation during two of the years Trump appeared on WWE programming.

Vince McMahon gets more than he bargained for when Donald Trump got physical after signing the contract for Wrestlemania XXIII's \"Hair vs Hair\" match at Monday Night RAW in Washington on March 12, 2007.

Trump, who’s running for a second term as president, has also been accused of sexual assault and is facing his own costly pile of civil and criminal legal troubles, including four separate indictments. Trump has denied wrongdoing in his various cases, pleading not guilty in each criminal proceeding, including a New York trial that started Monday. Another person close to McMahon said that the two men don’t discuss their legal problems and that Trump doesn’t provide legal advice.

Hours after the publication of this story, a spokesperson for McMahon pushed back.

“Mr. McMahon has not been ‘staying in touch’ or ‘been in touch regularly’ with former President Trump. He has spoken with Mr. Trump once in the past several years and that was for about a minute or so after Mr. McMahon’s back surgery. Other than that, there have been no communications between the two,” the spokesperson said.

A representative for Trump declined to comment.

Since he resigned, McMahon has been in touch with Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and John Cena, sources said. Johnson and Cena, both Hollywood superstars, are two of WWE’s biggest success stories.

Publicly, Johnson has thanked TKO and WWE executives regarding his addition to the TKO board earlier this year. In February, Cena told the radio host Howard Stern that “the whole thing is super unfortunate and it sucks,” while noting that he loves McMahon and has a “great relationship” with him. “But in the same breath,” he added at the time, “I’m also a big advocate of accountability.”

WrestleMania 29 Press Conference

Cena and Johnson are both represented by the William Morris Endeavor agency, which is part of Endeavor Group — the majority owner of TKO.A spokesperson for Johnson declined to comment. A representative for Cena didn’t respond to requests for comment.

WWE in transition

This isn’t the first time WWE has had to contend with controversy stemming from its former longtime leader. McMahon was acquitted of federal criminal charges in the early 1990s related to the steroid scandal that engulfed the wrestling world at the time.

In 2022, he briefly stepped down as WWE’s leader after the Journal reported that he paid millions of dollars to multiple women to cover up his alleged extramarital affairs. The Journal also reported that other women had come forward with sexual misconduct allegations . WWE amended its financial reports to reflect the payments. McMahon denied all wrongdoing.

His daughter helped take over leadership of the company in the interim, but McMahon-Levesque resigned when her father, who owned a controlling stake in WWE, returned in early 2023 . McMahon then engineered a deal to merge the company with Endeavor Group’s UFC to form TKO. Longtime Hollywood super agent Ari Emanuel is the CEO of both Endeavor and TKO.

That deal, announced in April 2023 , made McMahon the executive chairman of the new company, and he gave up majority control of WWE. At the time, he told CNBC he wouldn’t be “in the weeds” with creative decisions but he would weigh in on big decisions. That marked a big shift for McMahon. His family has been in the business dating back to the early 20th century. After buying the company from his father, who was known as “Vince Sr.,” the younger McMahon then employed flamboyant superstars such as Hulk Hogan and the Rock, staging glitzy pay-per-view events like WrestleMania, to build it into an international sensation. And while WWE is still defined in part by the family, McMahon’s daughter and son-in-law are publicly attempting to push the brand into the future.

WrestleMania 40

At WrestleMania 40, held earlier this month in Philadelphia, McMahon-Levesque surprised the crowd with an appearance and hailed her husband’s leadership. “Every Wrestlemania is special for its own reason, but I think WrestleMania 40 might be the one I’m most proud of, because this is the first WrestleMania of the Paul Levesque era,” she said . (Linda McMahon joined her daughter backstage, according to an Instagram photo posted by wrestling star Charlotte Flair.) Levesque himself proclaimed a “new era” for WWE.

It was a significant moment for the brand, coming during the first WrestleMania since the Grant lawsuit -- and it’s the first one under TKO’s management. Still, some rank-and-file WWE employees have griped that the company hasn’t done more to address the situation, according to an insider. After McMahon quit, Shapiro told a global town hall for both TKO and Endeavor employees “in no uncertain terms” that the former wrestling boss wouldn’t return, according to another insider. Shapiro also assured employees that Levesque and WWE President Nick Khan have his support, this person said.

Otherwise, WWE is more relaxed since McMahon resigned in January, sources said. When McMahon was still running things, he would come in late in the afternoon and often stay until around midnight or beyond, two current employees said. (His office at WWE headquarters in Stamford, Connecticut, is unoccupied but otherwise intact, according to an executive, who called it “spooky.”) He had a reputation for being capricious and quick to fire employees, which generated fear and created a chilling effect, according to sources.

Now there’s more levity and freedom to make a mistake or suggest an idea, some employees said.

The current leadership operates more conventionally, giving underperforming employees a standard progress report and opportunities to improve before taking action, they added.

World Wrestling Entertainment Headquarters

Some McMahon loyalists remain, but one employee said: “WWE is actually a really great place to work, and Vince distracted from that. It’s been much better since he left.” Another said: “People feel like they’re on steadier ground.”The company, meanwhile, is charting its post-McMahon course with the help of lucrative media rights deals. In September, WWE signed a $1.4 billion deal with NBC News’ parent company, NBCUniversal, for domestic rights to “Friday Night SmackDown.” In January, it inked a 10-year, $5 billion pact with Netflix to move its flagship “Raw” show and other programs to the streaming giant next year. WWE announced both agreements after it became part of TKO and McMahon ceded much of his official control over the brand.

There’s yet another sign suggesting that McMahon’s distance from WWE is more than temporary: He has sold hundreds of millions of dollars’ worth of shares in TKO since November, a sizable chunk of those sales coming after he resigned in January. That’s different from when he briefly stepped down in 2022.

“This time, it’s like, OK, now, it’s over -over,” one of the insiders said.

A version of this story was published on CNBC.com .

When it comes to government planes and political trips, who pays for a president's campaign travel?

WASHINGTON — It’s no simple matter to move the commander in chief from point A to B, and it’s even more complicated when the president is seeking a second term.

President Joe Biden recently spent three days in Pennsylvania , a pivotal state in the 2024 campaign, and he plans to be in Virginia and Florida this coming week. The Democratic incumbent is seeking an edge over Republican Donald Trump as he ramps up his travels around the country.

Here’s a look at how much it costs and who pays the bill during the campaign season.

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?

It’s not cheap to fly the president’s fleet.

The White House uses Sikorsky helicopters known as Marine One when the president is aboard, as well as custom Boeing 747s that are immediately recognizable as the iconic humpback Air Force One. (Sometimes the president uses a more modest modified 757 if his destination is nearby or if a runway isn’t long enough to accommodate the bigger plane.)

Marine One costs between $16,700 and almost $20,000 per hour to operate, according to Pentagon data for the 2022 budget year. Air Force One is even more expensive: roughly $200,000 per hour.

But those figures only scratch the surface of the real cost. There also are military cargo planes that travel ahead of the president to make sure his armored limousines are in place, not to mention the enormous security apparatus that follows the president everywhere.

New aircraft are in the works because the current versions are decades old. Sikorsky is producing 23 updated helicopters to serve as Marine One. Boeing is building two new Air Force One planes , and they are scheduled to be finished by 2028. According to the Pentagon, the planes will come with all enhancements, including “a mission communication system,” a “self-defense system” and even “autonomous baggage loading.”

WHO PAYS FOR THE TRAVEL?

When the president flies for political purposes, the campaign is supposed to pay the bill. But during an election year, the line between governing and campaigning can be fuzzy.

For example, Biden held an official event Wednesday in Pittsburgh, where he announced his proposal for higher tariffs on steel imported from China. The event, however, was a not-so-subtle opportunity for the president to rub shoulders with union members who are critical to his reelection, and he jabbed at Trump in his remarks. (At one point Biden joked that the former president was “busy right now,” a reference to the hush money trial that recently got underway in New York.)

It’s up to the White House counsel’s office to figure out what percentage of the president’s travels are campaign related. That determines how much the federal government should be reimbursed by the Biden campaign. Sometimes the calculations aren’t straightforward, such as when the White House adds an official event to an otherwise political trip.

Norm Eisen, a White House ethics lawyer under President Barack Obama, said both Republicans and Democrats have usually hewed closely to regulations.

“We had a set of rules on how to do the allocations,” he said. “They’re intricate, and we stuck to them.”

No matter what, taxpayers end up on the hook for most of the cost. Campaigns do not pay for all the Secret Service agents and the rest of the security apparatus. In fact, they usually only cover the cost of Air Force One passengers who are flying for explicitly political purposes — sort of like buying a ticket on a particularly exclusive private jet.

HOW MUCH HAS BIDEN PAID?

Biden’s campaign and his joint fundraising committee have been stockpiling travel cash in an escrow account maintained by the Democratic National Committee. From January 2023 until the end of last month, they deposited nearly $6.5 million.

Some of that money goes to general campaign logistics, such as staff expenses and advance work. The account is also used to reimburse the federal government for official aircraft used to transport the president, the first lady, the vice president and the second gentleman when they travel for the reelection effort.

So far, not much money has found its way back to the U.S. Treasury. As of the latest data available, just $300,000 has been provided.

It’s safe to assume that Biden’s campaign will end up forking over much more than that once the campaign is over. Trump’s team reimbursed the federal government nearly $4.7 million for travel expenses during the 2020 race.

But Biden probably won’t have trouble covering his bills. His campaign and the DNC had more than $192 million in cash on hand at the end of March.

AP White House Correspondent Zeke Miller contributed to this report.
