About Mainpat

Mainpait is recognized as the home to Tibetan religious exiles who have formed a peaceful yet vibrant community over the decades. Mainpat is located in the Surguja district in the northern part of Chhattisgarh, at about 55KM from the nearest city of Ambikapur, 160KM from Korba, and 360KM from Raipur.

Mainpat weather is that of tropical plains. Summers are hot and humid and could be occasionally dry. Winters are the exact opposite, with pleasant and cool days and chilly nights. The monsoon period is also comfortable, with abundant rainfall enhancing the green cover in the region.

Historically, Mainpat was mostly jungle and remains one of the most forested regions of the country. In the earlier centuries, the village and the forests were home to the Yadavs and native tribes like Manjhi, Manjhwar, Kanwar and Pahadi Korwa. In the 1960s, after the Chinese invasion of Tibet, many Tibetan exiles sought refuge here and still form an important part of the local population.

Mainpat was once a cluster of 62 plateaus perched over 3200 ft, replete in dense forests of Sal. The place is also mineral-rich and an important source of Bauxite. The rocky terrain is intercepted by streams, rivulets, and streaky waterfalls, which regain their force during the monsoon.

Interesting Facts

Mainpat is famous for the gravity-defying waterfall – Ulta Pani/Bisar Pani, which also translates to “Upside down water”. This is a canal where the water flows upwards or at least appears to be flowing against gravity. There is no scientific explanation so far for the phenomenon and is usually considered an illusion. But this uncanny natural feature makes the village popular and puts the unknown village on the tourism map.

How to Reach

There is no train service in Mainpat. The nearest railway station is in Ambikapur, about 56KM away. From there, you can book a cab or take the local tourist vehicle to reach Mainpat.

Mainpat is connected to major cities and towns in Chhattisgarh via Mainpat Road and indirectly via NH43 and NH130. There are also state-run and private buses from Bilaspur, Raipur, Rourkela, Jabalpur , Ranchi etc. to the Ambikapur bus terminal. From there, you can rent a car or book a cab to reach Mainpat. The best way to reach Mainpat is to book an outstation cab from any of these places and do a road trip.

The nearest airport to Mainpat is in Ranchi, at Birsa Munda Airport, about 300KM away. Another nearby airport is under development in Ambikapur, which will connect Raipur and Varanasi in the future.

The best time to visit this panoramic village is either during winter or the monsoon. Ulta Pani is a major attraction tourist spot of Mainpat. Ulta Pani Mainpat is a very unique place. This place is also known as Gravity Hill of Chhattisgarh. Here you will get to see the miracle of nature. Normally water flows from top to bottom but here it is reverse. Here water goes from bottom to top which is very unique.

Ulta Pani is also called Bisarpani. This place is situated in Bisarpani village in Mainpat of Surguja district. Road is available to reach this place. Due to the specialty of Ulta Pani, this place became very famous and people from all over India started coming here to visit. Due to the popularity of this place, this place is well developed so that people can come here easily.

You can come here by bike and car. Parking facility available here. This is the whole village area. Here there are small food and drink shops are available from where you can eat and drink.

Here you can come and see this place and you see how the water is going from bottom to top. Ulta Pani is called a miracle of nature, because from here it appears as if the water is flowing upwards, towards the hill. In Ulta Pani, the water originated from under a stone near a tree and this water moves forward 185 meters and flows up towards the drain. which is looks like water is flowing from bottom to top.

Here you can come and see another amazing thing. If you park your car here on the hill. Here if the car is parked in neutral, so the car automatically moves ahead and stops after some distance.

There is a magnetic field here, due to which the vehicle moves automatically. This is one of the best places in mainpat you can enjoy here. You can come to this place in Mainpat to hang out with your family and friends.

Jalpari Falls is a main natural tourist destination of Mainpat. This waterfall is built inside a dense forest. There is a roadway to go to this waterfall. There is a raw road available here. Here you can come to this waterfall through the raw route.

This waterfall is about 3 kilometers away from Fish Point. You can reach this waterfall by asking the locals for directions. Here you can come comfortably by bike. Here you can also come by trekking.

Here you get to see a beautiful waterfall in the middle of the forest. This waterfall is not very big but very attractive. The water of the waterfall is transparent and many people enjoy bathing here. It is very slippery around here. You can enjoy coming here with your friends and family. Jaljali is one of the main sightseeing places of Mainpat. Jaljali is a unique and wonderful place in Mainpat. The earth shakes here which is nothing less than a wonder. This place is surrounded by dense forest and there are big trees all around here.

Jaljali is also called bouncing land. Here you get to see a small land area which is very unique. If you jump on this ground, then the ground shakes. This land is very soft and fluffy. Mainpat tourist places; It is a hill station town and popular tourist attraction in Indian state Chhattisgarh. It is a small village in the Surguja district in the northern part of the state of Chhattisgarh.

It is very famous as ‘Shimla of  Chattisgarh’ among tourist. Framed by the natural beauty and green forest range,

it’s famous for the Tiger, Fish point, Gahghi waterfall, Daldali point and many more. The place is surrounded by forest and greenery.

It also famous for bird watching, tracking, camping and lots of beautiful spots with breathtaking scenic beauty .

Mainpat is known for the Tibetan refugee camps that have come up in the area. First established in 1962 by the Government of India in order to rehabilitate more than a thousand Tibetan refugees who fled from Tibet during the Chinese invasion of Tibet in 1959.

The land was made available by the State government of Madhya Pradesh and the Indian Government financed the scheme.

In case of Mainpat, all the necessary arrangements such as temporary huts and ration supplies etc could not be made prior to the arrival of the settlers and as a result the settlers had to face a lot of initial hardships.

The place was in fact a jungle where only a few of the local Indians were living during that time.

But the landscape was beautiful besides being a very isolated place. During that time Tibetans had to go through a hard time building their huts which gradually developed to better houses where they live now.

The condition of the roads were in bad shape (still the road conditions are not par excellent as compared to the most of other settlements).

Like all other Tibetans during that time, people at Mainpat also had a hard time getting comfortable with the climate of the area.

For them, the summers were almost un-acceptable but then as the time passed, everything started getting better.

Not too long after 1965, settlement’s only school for Tibetans (Central School for Tibetans) had started with the help of CTS and DoE(Department of Education, Central Tibetan Administration, Dharamsala) with Creches at some of the camps.

The first Monastery (Gelug) of the Settlement was built by Dhakpo Rinpoche at Camp

1. After that a second monastery (Kagyue) came up by the grace of Khentse Ripoche at Camp

2. Following that, after a real long time, came the third monastery (Nyingma), which is now the biggest of them (compared to the structure of the monastery building), at camp

3 in 1995 by His Eminence Penor Rinpoche. There are few other small monasteries in the Settlement such as Nyingma-Choetsok and a monastery at camp

6. Recently in the year 2000, another monastery (Kagyue) had started its construction at camp 3.

Since from the very beginning the main livelihood for the settlement’s people had been agriculture and even today agriculture has remained to be the major contributor for the people of the settlement.

Like the Tibetans from all other settlements, Mainpat’s people started their hand in winter sweater selling very early.

It is a group of rocks, the villagers also consider this structure as belonging to the era of Lord Rama and the locals consider it sacred and worship the stone. Remember to take off your shoes before going near this stone.

To visit this place, a short tour of the Mainpat and Ambikapur highway would be required. It may be attractive to the common people but it is a simple rock with different mineral composition.

Here you can play music with stones for this near Ambikapur! While visiting Manpat, one should stop here for some time. Here is Shimla of Chhattisgarh, it is a unique rock that collides with stones at different places to produce a musical sound.

Ghaghi is a kind of waterfall which is nearby from darima at ambikapur mainpat road. It’s a beautiful undiscovered tourist attraction but people have to work hard to get here, because its access path is very bad.

Due to water the road is cut down. But this is a very beautiful picnic spot. It is best place to enjoy picnic with friends and family. Ghaghi is small waterfall on river ghahi which further join Ghunghutta dam.

Forest and green trees all around adds freshness to air. Place is near to ambikapur town in mainpat road via Darima. Though the road for last 1 km is not good otherwise place will definitely mesmerize your mood and make happy.

One who love off-road driving will definitely like it and it is highly recommended to big vehicles like Scorpio etc. It is best time to visit this place in winter. A must visit place near Ambikapur. One can see the waterfall, rocks and a dam.

It is not a commercial tourist place but is frequented by localities. People experiment with their vehicles when they come here. The hill is really magnetic and has a good pull.

The water does flows upwards. The uniqueness of this place is some special effect of magnetic field causing water to flow upwards covering the distance of about 60 meters and the elevation is about 3 feet.

The 185 meter patch of area has Magnetic Fields which forces the stream of water to flow uphill.

There is another wonder there just parallel to the water stream. An unprepared uphill road covering the distance of about 50 meter. The elevation is not much but definite and It could be 1 feet.

Mainpat is a tiny hill-station in Chhattisgarh state. The hill station is well packed with green valleys, dense forests, gushing streams etc. The hillock remains unexplored and thus providing a serene ambience. Mainpat is a small village in the Surguja district in the northern part of the state of Chhattisgarh, India. Lying about 55 kilometers by road from Ambikapur, the hill station features the Tiger Point Waterfall, Fish Point Waterfall, Anmol Hotel and Resort. Bilaspur is a city in the central Indian state of Chhattisgarh. It’s divided by the winding Arpa River. The nearby villages of Ratanpur and Malhar are known for their ancient, intricately carved Hindu temples. To the north, Khutaghat Dam is framed by hills. Northwest of the city, Achanakmar Wildlife Sanctuary is a tiger reserve. It’s bamboo and teak forests are also home to leopards, flying squirrels, and wild dogs.

Mainpat is a favorable tourist destination. The place is lush green and the romantic dawn and dusk so very enchanting. Manipat is said to be the best honey moon destination. Mainpat is on a plateau with the area surrounded by jungles. The yet to be explored place has beautiful hill slopes, jungles, waterfalls and is a hill station that has not been exploited. There is a Tibetan settlement that offers an excellent opportunity for inter action with them. In fact, Mainpat is also known as ‘Mini Tibet’ because of the settlements. It is also called the Shimla of Sarguja because of what nature has created.

How To Reach Mainpat

Chhattisgarh is a state that has several things to see, each city is unique and the region is closely bound to nature. Mainpat is one such place in the northern part of the state that is nestled in the arms of nature. Located in Surguja district, Mainpat is quite a popular hill station. Since the hill station is at a higher altitude that the other cities, different modes of transport are not available directly. You can take a flight or a train to reach Mainpat, but if you want to get there directly without any hassles, then driving up there is the best way. Still not sure how to travel to this gorgeous hill station? Here are a few pointers on how to reach Mainpat.

Due to Mainpat being a hill station, it is not directly accessible by air. Therefore the closest airport that you have to go to reach Mainpat is the Birsa Munda Aiport located in the city of Ranchi in Jharkhand. This airport is located at a distance of 299.5 km from the hill station. Since Jharkhand is a different state, you will have to take a bus or a cab to reach Mainpat from there, which will take approximately 8 hours. The airport is quite posh and has all amenities like eateries, lounges, duty free shopping etc. Although this is the closest airport, it is not located within the state. The nearest airport within the state of Chhattisgarh is Swami Vivekananda International Airport in Raipur ; this airport is located at a distance of 381 km from Mainpat and takes approximately 9 hours to reach the hill station. You can take either of these airports and you can easily find transportation from the airport until the hill station.

One of the best ways to do a trip, especially the one to a hill station is by taking a road trip. Mainpat is well connected to other cities close to it inside Chhattisgarh . Mainpat is connected to Raigarh, Raipur , Ambikapur and many more major cities around, making it easy to drive up there. If you are not willing to drive, you can always take buses that are run by the government to go to the hill station. This is is one of the cheapest ways to travel and is quite comfortable too. If you are coming from adjacent states, you can take luxury overnight buses that will bring you to this beautiful destination directly.

There is no direct train to Mainpat either due to it being on a higher altitude. Hence, the closest and the main railhead serving this hill station is the Ambikapur Railway Station and this station is located at a distance of 55.7 km from the lovely hill top. This is the most convenient way to get to Mainpat due to the proximity of the railway station. This is the station that is the connecting point to Surguja district and has a good frequency of trains coming in from different cities. Some of them halt for a few minutes at the station and others come here directly. Once you get off at the station, you can hire a cab or a bus that will take you directly to Mainpat in approximately 1.5 hours.

Getting Around

The best way to get around this beautiful hill station is to travel by bus; local buses in the area run at stipulated times during the day, taking locals and tourists around the place. These buses aren’t available until very late in the night, therefore a better option is to hire a self driven car from any vendor in Mainpat. You can hire these self driven cars and pay a fixed rate for the day. If you don’t want to drive, you can hire a taxi for a few hours or the entire day depending on your sightseeing schedule.
