  • By Kristi Marcelle

Alaska and cruising are a perfect match for families looking for activity, convenience and comfort. An Alaska family vacation is filled with soft adventure, wildlife, glaciers and whales, and a cruise is the easiest way to see it all. Celebrity Cruises has been on my list to experience for families; this past summer, I got the chance to cruise Alaska with my daughter on the Celebrity Solstice .

Celebrity Solstice Family-Friendly Review

The Solstice is an elegant ship with contemporary style that exudes a feeling of comfort throughout. It has capacity for 2,850 passengers within a well-thought-out design that seamlessly mixes spaces for entertainment, relaxation and quiet time. The refreshingly easy layout avoids the maze-like trek to staterooms that can happen on larger ships. This is a key point when families think about how much freedom tweens and teens are allowed during the cruise — my 11-year-old daughter navigated the ship on her own with ease.

Family Fun with Adult Appeal

There are many choices for cruises in Alaska, and Celebrity Cruises is a great fit for families seeking a more sophisticated experience with a high level of service that is family-friendly but not kid-centric. While ships don’t have flashy amenities like water slides, they offer vibrant family programming. For multigenerational groups, this is an excellent fit. Alaska cruises are popular with families and there were 450 kids on our cruise — i.e. you’ll see them around, but they aren’t taking up the entire pool playing Marco Polo.

Celebrity Solstice Alaska Itinerary

The itinerary on the 7-night Tracy Arm Fjord Cruise, round-trip from Seattle, includes stops in the ports of Ketchikan, Juneau, Skagway and Victoria. Highlights on days at sea include the Tracy Arm Fjords and the Inside Passage. As with all cruises, weather conditions can affect the itinerary, and as our ship cruised the fjords toward the glacier we encountered so much ice that we had to turn around. It was astounding to wake up to a waterway filled with icebergs and ice floes surrounding the ship. This is very unusual for July (one reason was that an earthquake five days earlier had dislodged the ice).

Standout Service

Behind the beautiful decor lies a well-trained staff that begins and ends the day with a can-do and how-can-I-help-you attitude. The room attendants are adept at making guests feel special and noticed, including those like us in regular cabins and not suites or higher categories. Each attendant takes care of 15 cabins, which can accommodate up to 60 people total. Our attendant knew our names, recognized our faces outside of the room area, and was kind and thoughtful. We enjoyed seeing and interacting with him.

This level of service extends to the dining room attendants and even the managing staff. I received a bottle of wine as a gift, and it was the same wine that I had ordered the night before in the restaurant.

Guests on an Alaska cruise are surrounded by the wild side of nature. I always recommend booking a stateroom with a balcony if possible, to get a front-row seat for the beauty that sails by. Family staterooms accommodate up to four people, with two twin beds that can be pushed together plus a sofa/trundle bed. The setup is compact yet comfortable for a family of four. As Alaska attracts so many families, these cabins sell out quickly.

Kids’ Club and Family Activities

The Solstice offers a full kids’ club for ages 3 to 11 as well as a teen center. There were about 50 regular attendees the week of our cruise; my 11-year-old bonded with kids her own age and participated in daily activities. While the experiences and activities vary by age, kids 9 to 11 engage in cooking classes, scavenger hunts around the ship and movie nights, and they try their hand at flying drones and robotics. The teens have their own space — a more casual hangout area versus organized and supervised activities.

Beyond the kids’ club, there are organized family events around the ship. One morning it was a table tennis tournament and another day it was a movie on the Lawn Club, a real grass lawn that was mowed with a lawnmower before the showing. The cruise ended with an all-ages kids’ talent show, which ended up being a highlight.

Dedicated Adult Areas

The Solstice has interesting bar and club areas that are for adults only, as well as a spa and gym with ocean views. The Solarium, a dedicated adult indoor pool area, is a welcome change on a chilly Alaska day. When the weather is poor, this area is opened to families for a few specific hours in the evening so everyone can use the pool — it was too chilly to use the outdoor one during most of our cruise.

Dining Venues and Entertainment

Celebrity Cruises is known for their food and dining options. Service is exceptional, and our waiter encouraged us to try everything and to enjoy ourselves in the process. We opted for an early seating at dinner; our window table rewarded us with breaching humpback whales and orcas on some days.

For variety, the ship includes various specialty restaurants for lunch and dinner that require an additional fee. If you haven’t planned ahead, a great option is to try out one at lunch when it’s easier to get in. We also met friends hanging out for coffee or a drink in the oceanview Caffe al Bacio, which also provided a glimpse at the many activities going on in the atrium.

Booking an Alaska Cruise

Alaska cruises are in high demand and often book up 12 to 15 months before the departure date. They are the perfect choice for adventure-loving and multigenerational families looking for a vacation with no cooking or planning. Cruises on the Celebrity Solstice begin at $1,049 per person for an inside cabin in low season.

Cruising to Alaska on the Celebrity Solstice

celebrity solstice alaska cruise

August 15, 2017 Cruising to Alaska on the Celebrity Solstice

Despite cruising all over the Caribbean, Europe & even Canada, one trip still alluded us: the famed cruise to Alaska. Undeterred that these itineraries are traditionally loved by generations the tend to skew older, we booked our trip a mere three weeks before the July 4th holiday – shockingly late (even for us) for a Celebrity Cruise to Alaska & definitely late for many people who look forward to this trip of years. After seven days on the Celebrity Solstice, we came away with mixed feelings for our favorite cruise line, but definitely no hard feelings toward Alaska. Here’s what it’s really like to cruise to Alaska on the Celebrity Solstice.

Celebrity Solstice in Alaska

The Solstice

The Solstice was the game changer for Celebrity in 2008 when she floated off the line: the first in their new line of “Solstice Class” ships, meant to usher in a new era of cruising: sleek, luxurious, modern & focused on attracting a younger, hipper crowd who is more interested in martinis than  Mah Jongg. This was our third vacation on an “S-Class” ship, having fallen in love with Celebrity on the Equinox  in 2012 & cruised on the Reflection in 2014.  In a way, it was like coming home: we knew the layout of the ship, we knew what we liked & didn’t like previously (although some of our favorites, like the crepe bistro, have gone away) & we generally knew what to expect. Celebrity Solstice Class Ships still have my favorite atrium area on the seas, complete with the live tree suspended between the mid-ship elevators. Another perk that only exists on the Celebrity Solstice, Equinox & Eclipse: the Corning Museum of Glass Hot Glass Show . Combining two of my favorite things (cool art & the Finger Lakes region of New York), we loved chatting with the artists after the show & the fact that they have a 1000 degree furnace on a ship moving through the ocean continues to blow my mind.

Looking Her Age?

The ship will celebrate its 10th birthday next year & while some areas look beautiful & well-kept, including the sunny, spacious library, unfortunately other areas are looking a little in need of some love. Almost every outdoor wood surface, including our cabin balcony railing, could use a fresh coat of varnish. In some outdoor areas, the wood railing is missing, which while it doesn’t pose a safety risk – the glass or metal wall is still there – it’s less than attractive to look at caution tape strung up around the ship.

Celebrity’s famed Lawn Club, one of the things that attracted us to the line in the first place many years ago, looked worst than my lawn at home in the middle of the summer, with big parts of it more dirt than grass or large areas, including the main lawn, roped off from use. I don’t discount the battle of keeping grass alive on a moving ship, but it’s something I know Celebrity can do because I’ve seen it on other ships. It also seemed that too many public places were plagued by seat cushions that were faded or ripped. The whole ship just felt a bit… tired.

Our Cabin: The Good

Our veranda cabin on deck nine was located close to the aft elevators, at the beginning of the “hump” – the area of the ship which bumps out over the water. This position meant that while we couldn’t see all the way forward, our balcony was deeper than others with plenty of room for lounging & whale watching. Our stateroom location was the closest we’ve ever been to the elevators &, honestly, I’m not sure why we’ve avoided that location – the increased passenger traffic wasn’t an issue at all & it was nice to not have to walk down a long hallway.

Celebrity Solstice Cabin Stateroom

The standard Solstice Class stateroom layout is still my favorite after ten cruises on different ships: the bed (two twins pushed together) is near the balcony door with the couch & closet next to the bathroom. There’s ample storage throughout the cabin, so it’s nice to completely unpack & store away the suitcases for the week (they tuck neatly under the bed). Celebrity’s S-Class bathrooms continue to be a highlight, with tons of storage, including a glass doored cabinet which we hadn’t seen on previous ships, & an enclosed shower, complete with a bar for shaving your legs.

Our Cabin: The Not So Good

In ten cruises, we’ve never had anything but mad love for our cabin steward (seriously, we normally want to take them home with us). Not so on this cruise. When we arrived, our room was not as clean as it should be, which started things off on a bit of a bummer note: there were gross stains & hair on the desk chair, as if it hadn’t been wiped down in several sailings, & B found a previous passenger’s bag of medication on the side of the bed (which we promptly turned into guest relations, only to be scolded later by our cabin steward for “telling his boss & not him”). As the cruise went on, our cabin steward woes continued:

  • After asking several times for wine glasses & a corkscrew (passengers can bring up to two bottles of wine per stateroom for personal consumption), we were finally informed that we couldn’t be given one as had always been standard before, but had to call our room steward each time we wanted to open a bottle. This is great in theory, but terrible in execution (the night we called, our steward was in a “meeting” & we had to wait 20 minutes for him to bring his corkscrew). Note to future cruisers: bring screw top bottles of wine!
  • On one side of our cabin was a family with three adjoining cabins & lots of little kids, which meant screaming (mostly the parents at the kids) & slamming doors at all hours of the day. On the other side of us were two teenagers cruising in a cabin alone (their parents were elsewhere on the ship), who enjoyed playing music on their balcony at all hours & being generally loud (as teenagers do)
  • Four decks down below our cabin was a designated smoking area – perhaps the biggest annoyance of any of these things.

During the cruise, I mentioned the door slamming to a few crew who shrugged & said ’tis the nature of summer holiday cruising. Post-cruise, I asked about the corkscrew policy (we should have gotten one on request) & the annoying teenagers next to us (they were of-age to be in a room alone). I’d love for Celebrity to think more about how their policies impact guests & their efforts to attract more passengers just like us (we fit their target demographic like a glove).

Note: we cruised Concierge Class, which is worthy of a post of its own – so stay tuned!

I think our experience in the Main Dining room was the nail in the coffin of traditional dining for us. I’ve written before about how much we love traditional dining: eating at a set table, every night, with interesting table mates & an engaging waiter & assistant waiter who got to know us every night. Our dining experience on Solstice was anything but this: our waiter was completely overwhelmed by the huge table of 14 sitting next to us (wasn’t supposed to be a table of 14, but they moved chairs around & insisted on sitting together) so much that we barely saw him. I don’t blame him for this, I blame the maitre’d. We were isolated at a little table for two next to a pole & had no one else to visit with. I wish we had just done Select Dining & called it a day.

When it came to what was on the plate, though, it was not all trouble, especially in the Oceanview Cafe, Celebrity’s buffet restaurant. A focus on international cuisine meant that there were new tastes & flavors appearing every day. Indian street tacos & spicy pad thai were highlights, as was the poached egg station, preparing made-to-order eggs benedict every morning. Weird times in port meant that we ate at the Oceanview more than usual & that wasn’t such a bad thing.

A highlight on the Celebrity Solstice continues to be Silk Harvest, their Asian-focused speciality restaurant. Only available on two ships (Solstice & Equinox), this innovative restaurant cooks up my favorite food of any specialty restaurant on any cruise line. Our dinner there included almost the entire menu (we have no shame), with highlights including Tom Gum Yum soup, pork dumplings, chicken green curry, orange chicken & tapioca pudding. The service was the best we had in any restaurant on the ship.

Another highlight of the food & beverage service on this sailing, which we haven’t seen previously, was the availability of local beers. The ship had several Alaskan Brewing Company beers available on-board & we enjoyed sipping one while whale watching off the back of the ship.

Much like cruising Europe, you don’t head on an Alaskan cruise for the ship: you go because it is majestic, remote, stunningly beautiful Alaska. Our ship, which traveled round trip from Seattle, stopped in Ketchikan, Juneau, Skagway & Victoria, BC & cruised through Tracy Arm Fjord National Park.  I can’t wait to share all of my photos & stories from our time in our 49th state & British Columbia (which was arguably our favorite port). During our time in port, almost all of our excursions were booked through Celebrity &, without exception, they were all fantastic.

Celebrity also had a naturalist on board , as well as a cultural historian. Both offered interesting lectures on wildlife & the towns we were visiting in Alaska. The naturalist was especially helpful as we cruised down Endicott Arm, which was full of ice from an earthquake the previous week – he narrated the entire trip down the fjord over the PA system.

Fellow Cruisers

Unlike every other cruise we’ve ever been on, we weren’t “the young ones.” In fact, the ship was bursting with children, celebrating the 4th of July week & summer vacation with their families. It changed the dynamic of the ship & made me yearn for cruising during the school year. I really wish Celebrity was better equipped to deal with kids…

Unfortunately, with a few exceptions (including the phenomenal Captain Tsaos & the Cruise Director, Steve, who we’ve actually cruised with previously), the crew wasn’t up to par. They were snippy (I got snapped at in the Oceanview when I asked for a clean glass after being given a dirty one), focused on up-selling at every interaction & less customer service minded than any crew we’ve ever had before on a ship. Other Celebrity passengers have commented on a similar experience, which is disappointing to know that it’s happening widely across the line.

Embarkation/Disembarkation

We had heard nightmare stories about the Port of Seattle, specifically Pier 91 where Celebrity docks, but had absolutely no issues. We arrived around noon & were able to quickly get on board after waiting in a short security line & an almost non-existent check-in line. Disembarkation was also easy: our departure zone number was called right on time, we breezed through security & had our bags in hand, all in less than 30 minutes. Thumbs up, Seattle!

This is the most downer cruise review I’ve ever written & honestly that makes me sad. I don’t know if I’ve changed as a traveler or Celebrity has changed – or maybe a little of both. Cruising used to be a go-to vacation for me, but now I’m just not sure. One thing is for certain though: Alaska was amazing (even if the weather was not) & I can’t wait to return.

Great review! I have only cruises Princess so far but am curious about Celebrity.

Good to know. I’m planning on doing an Alaskan cruise next summer with my mom and potentially my hubby. So far I’ve only looked at Princess Crusies as I’ve heard nothing but great recommendations about them from 2 people very close to me (my dad and also a friend). My dad has also sailed with Princess on a fall cruise up the east coast to Nova Scotia, which was not so good, but it was to do with the hurricance coming up the coast. :/

' src=

We cruised Princess on one of their newer ships last year (there’s a full review in the cruise section) & didn’t love it. I’ve heard really good things about Holland’s Alaska program. Alaska is just such a unique place, though, I think it’s hard to compare our experience on a ship in the Caribbean to our experience on a ship in AK! Happy cruising, regardless!

Alaska is an amazing place for sure. We did the Voyage of the Glaciers itinerary on Princess back in 2006. Definitely want to sail again to see some different ports. We’ve sailed on Celebrity twice and had great experiences with well maintained ships and wonderful crew. Equinox in 2011 and Constellation in 2015. We sailed with Captain Tasos on Connie – definitely one of the best captains we’ve ever seen so engaging and in tune with guests. And glad to see someone else is a fan of our favorite specialty restaurant on Celebrity – Silk Harvest!

Y’know, I’ve always been skeptical of cruises. Luke has had good experiences but… ehhh. The part of this that looks most appealing to me is Alaska, itself, plus the whales and the views. Thank you for sharing :)

There are so many great things about cruising – especially the “unplugging” factor. You just have to find the right cruise for you!

And the whales & views were definitely amazing! We spent a lot of time on our balcony just looking out at the scenery.

I have never been on a cruise. I appreciate your honest review so that I know what could be in store for me!

This ship is AMAZING! Thank you for the re-cap! I cant wait to go on a cruise!

Really enjoyed this. I haven’t been on a cruise and this provided some good tips about what to look out for – and what to expect. Those photos of Alaska are stunning.

Alaska is truly stunning!

An Alaskan cruise is on the bucket list (for sooner rather than later). I really appreciate your honest review of this cruise line. Looking forward to reading more about the trip.

Alaska was so unbelievably gorgeous! You’ll enjoy it there, regardless of how you get there.

Good to know I am not the only one! I wrote a whole blog post our Alaska Cruise adventure. Cruising is not for me–I think I will stick to the air. Nice post– Donna

Thanks, Donna! I want cruising to be for me – I love being on the water – I think I just need to stick with small ships.

On this ship right now cruising Alaska’s Inside Passage. This is my first ever cruise. If they are all like the staff & policies on this ship, it will be my last cruise. I HAVE NEVER seen such rude bartenders & wait staff!!! Loving Alaska but hating Celebrity!!!

I’m so sorry to hear you’re not having a good time! Hopefully the beauty of Alaska outweighs any displeasure from the cruise – it certainly did for us.

We took this very cruise line, same ship as well and had a great time in 2016. Nothing bad to say we loved it all. Love Celebrity.

We cruise on Solstice in Australia in 2014. She was a beautiful well appointed ship with a very attentive crew. Dining room staff was always very professional and accommodating. We were on board for 35 days as we cruised NZ and circumnavigated Australia on two back to back cruises one of which was Concierge Class. Room change between cruises in Fremantle(Perth) was also seamless.. we plan to do the Alaskan Cruise in 2020. Hopefully things will improve and she will be brought back to her glory. 10 years is usually time for a refit. BTW we are seasoned cruisers and at the time Celebrity and especially Solstice was a superior cruise line.. Five years can be an eternity in the Cruise business.

We enjoyed our Celebrity Cruise overall. We thought the staff was wonderful. The naturalist was terrific. The food varied and I would upgrade to specialty dining rooms if your budget allows. We had just one meal in Silk Harvest and enjoyed it very much. The room was very efficient. I would like to see a better quality bath towel. The bed was hard. Also a great location near the internet cafe on Deck 6. Our big issue was the generally poor quality of the on board entertainment. So-so singers and dancers, a truly bad Branson, MO style musical impressionist and not terrible talented lobby singers. One very funny black comedian.

' src=

This review makes me leery of our upcoming Honolulu to Sydney in September on the Solstice. 18 days, and I don’t like what I’m hearing.

Leaving tomorrow for Seattle & cruising Fri. On Soltice to Alaska. I almost did Holland America. Wish I had now. Oh well, I am looking forward to our Alaska adventure.. Will post afterwards. Thanks for the tips.

Celebrity Solstice Review: Ship Details In A Nutshell

Celebrity Solstice docked in San Pedro

Are you planning a cruise with Celebrity Cruises? In this article, I review the Celebrity Solstice on my 7-day cruise. The Solstice is the first ship in the Solstice class for Celebrity Cruises. The Solstice is the sister ship of Celebrity Eclipse, Celebrity Equinox, Celebrity Silhouette, and Celebrity Silhouette.

They featured forward-thinking amenities such as the Lawn Club, Hot Glass Class, Le Petit Chef animated dinner show, and a live tree in its central atrium.

My wife, Karen, and I sailed on the Celebrity Solstice in 2023 on a Pacific Coastal cruise. The packed 7-day itinerary only included one full sea day, making for a hectic itinerary with lots to do.

During the summer, the Solstice repositions to Seattle to offer 7-day Alaska cruises before moving to Asia for the winter. If you’re a fan of repositioning cruises, you can sail the Solstice to the Hawaiian Islands and across the South Pacific to New Zealand and Australia.

This is the second time we’ve sailed on a Celebrity Solstice-class ship. The first time was on the Celebrity Eclipse  in 2019 when Karen and I sailed to Hawaii on our honeymoon.

I hope this review of our cruise helps you decide if the Celebrity Solstice suits you. Celebrity continues to be one of our favorite cruise lines, so read on to find out why.

Celebrity Solstice, its resort pool, Sky Lounge and main dining room

About The Celebrity Solstice

Celebrity Cruise Line launched the Solstice class in 2008. At the time, it was the largest ship for Celebrity, but the Edge class has since surpassed it, which launched in 2018.

At the time of our sailing, the Solstice was near maximum capacity with approximately 2,600 passengers. Not surprisingly, most passengers were from the United States, followed by Mexico, Canada, several European countries, and more.

First Impressions Of The Celebrity Solstice

After taking a shuttle from our hotel, we boarded the ship at the  Los Angeles World Cruise Terminal . We find all Solstice-class ships have an interior design that is elegant and timeless.

We boarded at Pier 46 in San Pedro, which the cruise port only uses if the main piers (91, 92, and 93) are occupied. As we walked from the bus parking lot to the ship, the size was large and impressive.

Celebrity ships are always well maintained, and the Solstice showed no signs of its age. In fact, Celebrity last refurbished the vessel in 2016. With her new hull color of royal blue, she looked as good as a new vessel.

We had been spoiled when we cruised pre-pandemic on the Celebrity Eclipse in 2019. On that cruise, staff members gave all passengers a glass of champagne when they stepped on the ship.

The central atrium on the Solstice cruise ship

However, post-pandemic many cruise lines are struggling to return to profitability. Nowadays, cruise lines have cut back on some of the “freebies” that made cruising a great vacation.

Our welcome on the Celebrity Solstice included greetings from the staff, but the complimentary champagne was gone. It was only my 2nd time on a Celebrity ship, but I couldn’t help but feel immediately some cost-cutting had been implemented.

In fairness to Celebrity, owned by the larger Royal Caribbean Cruise Line, I’m glad they survived the COVID-19 pandemic. It’s okay if they need to trim expenses after being shut down for almost two years.

Classic Décor

The Solstice has a pleasing classic décor and is similar to the Eclipse we enjoyed for our honeymoon cruise from Vancouver to the Hawaiian Islands.

Celebrity has an upscale and refined look as a premium cruise line compared to other mainstream cruise lines such as Carnival and Princess.

In contrast, the Edge-class vessels feature modern luxury, more contemporary colors, and forward-thinking designs.

Ficus tree in the Celebrity Solstice atrium

The Solstice has a large Ficus tree in the main atrium, a signature feature of the Solstice-class vessels. While each ship has a tree, they feature them in different pots. A red-pointed cone provided the base for the Solstice’s tree.

The Solstice has lovely public areas, with lots of seating around the central atrium, often featuring live music. The atrium was also used by a staff member teaching various dance classes.

Celebrity Solstice Cabins

We booked an inside cabin on the Solstice (Cabin #1031), and this was my first time not being in a veranda stateroom. Inside cabins can vary significantly across cruise lines and even within a ship.

We booked inside because there was an incredible deal at approximately USD 350, not including port fees or gratuities. A fantastic deal since our one-night pre-cruise stay at the  Crowne Plaza  was almost USD 300.

While Celebrity invited us to bid on an upgrade, and we initially did, we canceled the bids because we wanted to review an inside stateroom.

I was amazed at the spaciousness of our cabin. Karen and I had ample storage space, and the stateroom was our oasis after a long day of exploring ports.

Celebrity Solstice inside cabin

When cruising, we use our cabin just for sleeping or an occasional movie. It was perfect for that and was 166 sq. ft.

The cabin was in the forward section of Deck 10 at the start of a short hallway with other inside cabins. We did not share a wall with another stateroom. It was tranquil, and I slept soundly every night.

One of the best parts of an inside cabin is that there is no outside light to disturb your sleep. To counter the total darkness, we brought 2 LED night lights  to make the trip to the bathroom during the night easier.

The Solstice has ocean view, balconies, and various suites, to round out their cabin offerings. Here’s our full review of our interior Solstice stateroom.

Celebrity Dining And Bars

Celebrity Cruise Lines prides itself on high-quality dining and has won several awards. Of the premium lines we have sailed on, dining on Celebrity was second only to Cunard.

The Eclipse and the Solstice had quality dining and service in the main dining room. However, due to the pandemic, Celebrity has streamlined food selection with fewer premium cuts of meat.

Regardless, I’m sure you will be pleased with the food served on the Celebrity Solstice.

Oceanview Café

This buffet is on Deck 14 and is open daily from early morning until late in the evening. The Oceanview Café offers various breakfast, lunch, and dinner culinary options.

We had most breakfasts there because it was fast and easy to get a hearty meal before a busy port day. Karen especially enjoyed the English Bacon, which was offered most days.

Desserts at the Oceanview Cafe

The best change Celebrity has made to the buffet is its markings of foods with certain ingredients. Since Karen is celiac, knowing which items were gluten-free was nice.

The buffet had an area for vegan selections and a kids’ section. You can read a detailed review of  dining onboard, including menus.

It’s a busy area during breakfast, but thankfully, the staff constantly cleans tables, so the wait is never long. It’s also a great area to start a conversation with fellow cruisers dining at a nearby table.

Alternatively, you can get specialty coffees and teas at the popular Café al Bacio. While specialty drinks incur extra charges, you can get pastries, cookies, and sweet treats for free.

Grand Epernay Restaurant

Most of our dinners were in the main dining room, the Grand Epernay. This impressive dining venue covers two decks on Deck 3 and 4.

The expansive room is airy and bright with its white décor. We selected the early seating at 6 pm, which worked well for us during busy port days.

One of the highlights of the dining room is the wine cellar containing hundreds of bottles of wine at the end of the room. Passengers with reserved dining times are seated at the same table on the lower level each night.

The Grand Epernay Restaurant, main dining area on the Solstice

With Karen’s food allergies (gluten-free, lactose-free, and nuts), we prefer having the same wait staff each night. Also, she gets to order her dinner the night before so the chef can adjust the ingredients as needed.

The menus have several dining options that change each night, so there is variety across your cruise. They also offer popular “classics” which are featured each night.

The classic menu items include a choice of:

  • Broiled Salmon
  • Grilled Chicken Breast
  • Grilled New York Sirloin Steak

The dress code aboard the Solstice during dining is relaxed. However, as all cruise lines try to appeal to a broader range of passengers, gone are the days when specific dress or formal attire is required.

During our cruise, I was surprised to see many women wore hoodies and men very casual, even on formal nights. What was previously a suit jacket required for men has now been described as “Classic Chic.”

While T-shirts and shorts are still frowned upon, men can wear any slacks or shirts.

Specialty Restaurants

The Solstice offers several specialty dining restaurants at additional cost if you enjoy fine dining. During our cruise, the following specialty dining options were available:

  • Tuscan Grille
  • Silk Harvest (Le Petit Chef)

Since we previously experienced Le Petit Chef, we tried the Murano and Sushi on 5 to review the specialty dining options on the Celebrity Solstice. The classic French menu at Murano offers one of the best dining experiences I have ever had on a cruise ship.

The Murano Restaurant

The service was impeccable, and the food presentation was in the class of a top Michelin-star restaurant. I ordered Murano Lobster which was flambeed with Cognac at our table!

If you are fortunate enough to be in a suite cabin, you are eligible to dine at Luminae Restaurant. The décor is upscale, and the venue is open for breakfast, lunch (on sea days), and dinner.

The Blu Restaurant is reserved for Aqua-Class passengers and offers a menu available during breakfast and dinner.

Solstice Bars

The Solstice has more than a dozen options to grab a drink. Its most popular spots are the Martini Bar and Cellar Masters on the Promenade Deck (deck 4).

The Martini Bar has entertaining bar staff who deliver an action-packed show if you order a Martini flight. It consists of six martinis for USD 35.

For something unusual, consider a black forest or banana split martini, which combines a dessert with a drink.

The Sky Lounge

Located a deck up, the Ensemble Lounge often gathered a crowd to listen to live music in a darkened room. At the bow, the Sky Lounge offered drinks based on your zodiac sign, which cost USD 12 if you didn’t have a drinks package.

In warm weather destinations the sunset bar allows you to enjoy your drinks with those perfect wake views.

The Lawn Club and Outdoor Theater

The Lawn Club is on Deck 15 at the ship’s aft. This incredible area has half an acre of real grass and is unique to Celebrity Solstice class vessels.

On a warm sunny day, playing lawn games or taking your shoes off and walking barefoot in the grass is so much fun. This is while you are cruising at 20 knots out at sea with no land in sight!

On our Celebrity Eclipse cruise in 2019, the Lawn Club was wide open with over 20,000 square feet of grass – over a half acre! Celebrity has now installed private cabanas on the Lawn Club, which guests can rent for a day or less.

The cost was over USD 200 with seating for up to 4 people. While the cabanas were spacious, they were severely weathered and needed some TLC. During our cruise on the Solstice, we saw only one be utilized.

The Lawn Club area also has a large outdoor screen. Weather permitting, you can watch movies, sports, and other popular shows. On one side of the Lawn Club, a smoking area borders the grass.

The Pool Deck

Resort deck pools

The Solstice has a large outdoor pool area on the Resort deck. It has two pools, four hot tubs, and a wet zone. The pool area has many loungers and alcoves if you prefer some privacy.

This area typically gets busy on hot days or sea days. Since we had only one full sea day, cruise passengers rarely used the pool area.

On the same deck, the adults-only Solarium Pool provides a place to swim if it’s cold outside. Along with two hot tubs, it’s an ideal place to relax on an Alaskan cruise.

Adult-only Solarium pool

The Sky Lounge

You’ll find the Sky Observation Lounge at the ship’s bow, one deck up from the pool area. Enclosed with floor-to-ceiling windows, it provides a quiet spot to read or take in the scenery when there are no activities.

This lounge can accommodate lots of guests. When cruising to Alaska, it provides a great viewing area if the weather isn’t cooperating outside.

You can take a  cruise from Seattle or Vancouver  when planning an Alaska cruise. The Solstice sails from Seattle and the Eclipse from Vancouver.

Entertainment

There are several entertainment venues throughout the ship, so there’s always something to see. We enjoyed the nightly shows in the Solstice Theater, but if you want something less-formal, check out the other venues.

Cast from the Amade production show

Some of the popular areas for entertainment of all tastes include:

  • Grand Foyer (Deck 3)
  • Ensemble (Deck 5)
  • Sky Lounge (Deck 14)
  • Celebrity Central (Deck 4)
  • Poolside (Deck 12)
  • Quasar (Deck 4)

Solstice Theater

The Solstice Theater is the largest venue on Deck 4 and 5 in the ship’s forward section.

During our cruise on the Celebrity Solstice, there were various shows each evening. Performances included magicians, comedians, musicians, Broadway-style shows, and more.

Show times were at 7 and 9 pm, and since we dined at 6 pm, we chose the 9 pm show. Most shows are ‘family-friendly,’ so it’s fine to bring your kids.

The production shows were of the standard type shown on cruise ships and were nothing spectacular. However, we did enjoy the “Rock City” show the last evening.

Singers from the Rock City production show

The comedian we enjoyed on embarkation day put on a 2nd show on Day 6 that was more ‘Adult-content.’ Check the daily “Celebrity Today” newsletter for what show is on each evening.

Celebrity Central

This theater is outside the large Solstice Theater and features movies, comedy shows, and other entertainment.

During our sailing, movies included blockbuster films that Hollywood had released within the past year.

The theatre holds approximately 200 people, but attendance varies greatly depending on what’s playing there. I like Celebrity Central because it’s a very comfortable theatre with often great entertainment.

Celebrity Solstice Activities

Every cruise ship has a Cruise Director to oversee all the activities during your cruise. There are activities for all interests and ages.

The everyday activities on the Solstice are fitness classes, dance lessons, art auctions, shopping-related contests, and various game shows.

Some activities provide a chance to meet others with the same interest. There are meetups for solo travelers, LGBTQ, wine tasting, and more.

Dance class in the atrium

Karen and I have decided we both have “2 left feet,” so you’ll never find us in the dance classes. However, I was amazed when over 100 passengers in the Grand Foyer were trying to learn salsa!

One of the best parts of the activities is that you can be a people-watcher and look from the sidelines.

Celebrity Today (Daily Newsletter)

As more cruise lines and ships move to a paperless environment, there is less chance of getting a printed daily program for activities. However, on the Celebrity Solstice, our room steward would put a paper copy of Celebrity Today each night.

As much as I support sustainability and consider myself “environmentally friendly,” we appreciate the hard copy of tomorrow’s activities.

Sometimes cruise apps are glitchy or hard to navigate. With paper, you can scan a couple of pages and highlight what you want to see or do in a quick minute or two.

However, when we sailed on Royal Caribbean’s Ovation of the Seas last year, it was great that you could use their app to book the activities.

The Solstice is not digital; you just show up to an activity and hope there are not too many people there.

Silent Disco

The Solstice offered Silent Disco a couple of times during our cruise. You can only hear the music through your glowing headphones.

It’s fun to watch the crowd as they all move individually and silently to the music playing in their head. Karen and I didn’t have a chance to try it on the Solstice but did dance the evening away on our cruise previously on the Celebrity Eclipse.

If you cruise on one of the Solstice-class ships, be sure to make time for Silent Disco!

The Library

The Solstice library

The library on all Solstice-class ships is impressive and a great place to relax with your own book or one from the ship. This area is on Deck 10 and is part of the central atrium with ample sunshine from above.

Seating is limited, so plan on arriving early if you want to enjoy one of the big comfy chairs. However, passengers come and go throughout the day, so the wait would not be long, if at all.

On our Pacific Coastal cruise, we had only one sea day. As a result, Karen and I rarely spent time in the library because we were busy with excursions.

Below the library, you’ll find a card room with cards, puzzles, and games.

Hot Glass Class

If you have glass blowing on your bucket list, you can do it on the Celebrity Solstice, Equinox, or Eclipse. With the help of a master glass artist, you can take a class to create your own work of art.

The  Hot Glass Class  is unique to Celebrity and impressive that you can do it on a cruise ship. Fire is one of the great fears of the cruise ship crew, and extremely high temperatures are needed for glass art.

You can watch a hot glass show or take a class for a fee of USD 120 (small item) and up to USD 160 (large item). The Hot Glass Class is a must-do activity if you love artistic glass!

One tip, the glass class is held on the aft of Deck 15. During our cruise, the wind was blistery, and you needed a coat to fight against the cool temperatures. Times vary per cruises, but classes are available when ships aren’t in port.

By pre-booking the class before your cruise, you can get a discount if choosing two classes instead of one. I met couples at the glass studio who make it a ritual to create a piece on every ship with a glass-blowing studio.

Children And Youth Services

No review of the Celebrity Solstice would be complete without mentioning their children’s program. On our cruise, of the 2600 passengers, over 400 were kids due to the spring break in most school districts.

I know some older passengers prefer to sail without kids on board and avoid cruises during peak times for kids.

The X Club

However, kids were present on our cruise but seemed just to be part of the passenger mix. I assume many kids were involved in various Fun Factory or X Club activities because we didn’t see many children onboard.

The youth programs offer different interest categories, including Art, Recreational, Culinary, and S.T.E.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math).

Camp At Sea

Celebrity’s program for all kids under 13 is Camp at Sea. The program is divided into three age groups as follows:

  • SHIPMATES – 3-5 years old.
  • CADETS – 6-9 years old.
  • CAPTAINS – 10-12 years old.

Each group has age-appropriate activities in the morning (9 am-noon), afternoon (2 pm-5 pm), and evening (7 pm-10 pm).

Babysitting was available for USD 15 per hour for children one and up. Slumber parties and port day programs cost USD 6 per hour for those three years and up.

The spa area is a strong source of revenue for cruise lines, and it’s no different on the Celebrity Solstice. We toured the area after embarkation but did not take advantage of any spa facilities during our cruise (probably because we had only one sea day).

Here are some sample spa services offered on the Solstice. All prices are USD and not inclusive of the 18% gratuities.

Note the spa does not have a jetted pool area as part of its thermal suite, the Persian Garden. In higher-end spas, the powerful jets are therapeutic and very popular among cruise passengers.

Laundry Services

Unfortunately, Celebrity does not provide a self-serve laundromat for passengers. Celebrity is part of the Royal Caribbean Group (RCG), and no cruise lines within RCG offer it.

As a result, plan on paying for laundry services, or using your onboard credit, if you need to get something washed. When traveling on Celebrity or Royal Caribbean, Karen and I always bring extra clothes so we will not need to pay for washing.

This is one of the reasons some cruise guests prefer Princess, Carnival, or Cunard. They offer self-serve washing machines and dryers.

On Cunard and Discovery Princess, the service is FREE; they even provide laundry detergent at no charge!

Laundry is expensive, so plan accordingly. However, if you have Elite status with Celebrity, you qualify for one no-charge bag of laundry.

Celebrity Solstice Extras

Guests may purchase additional items for their cruise, such as Wi-Fi, drinks packages, and specialty dining options.

Wi-Fi costs USD 19.99 daily and is suitable for email, messaging, and browsing. If you want to stream, you need to upgrade to premium Wi-Fi for USD 34.99 a day.

Even though the Solstice had upgraded its internet service to Starlink, many guests complained of slow service.

Drink packages varied from USD 30 a day for the zero proof package (soda, premium water, specialty coffees, smoothies, and non-alcoholic drinks) to USD 109 daily for a premium drinks package.

The Premium package included drinks up to USD 17 without a limit on the number you could consume per day.

The slightly cheaper Classic package costs USD 89 a day for drinks up to USD. However, we saw only a few drinks under USD 10, and these were generally wine by the glass or a beer.

To save money, Celebrity often offers a sale on drink packages pre-cruise. We received an email offering a buy one, get one 50% off before our cruise.

Final Thoughts On Cruising The Celebrity Solstice

Karen and I were fortunate enough to cruise four times in 2022 across Royal Caribbean, Princess, and Cunard. Our cruise on the Solstice was our first Celebrity cruise since 2019.

Cruising has changed since the pandemic, with all cruise lines cutting back on their services, food, and other areas. However, I was still impressed with the quality of the cruise we had on the Celebrity Solstice.

Celebrity is still a premium cruise line, but I couldn’t help but feel the “magic” was not quite the same as our cruise in 2019 on the Eclipse. However, that was our honeymoon cruise which I’m sure added to the memories.

On the Solstice, I was impressed with the quality of service from our room steward and dining servers. You can’t beat the service on a Celebrity vessel, and they made our stay incredible!

My wife Karen still considers Celebrity and Royal Caribbean her “favorite cruise lines,” but I feel my cruise on Cunard’s Queen Elizabeth to be my favorite among the Premium lines.

The Celebrity Solstice is an ideal ship for a couple. Whether you choose an Alaska, Asia, Australia, New Zealand, or Hawaiian itinerary, you’ll savor your time onboard.

While some travelers dream of lounging on a beach in the Caribbean, others might be itching to put on hiking shoes and explore the great outdoors. If glaciers, wildlife and picturesque coastline have long been on your bucket list, consider booking a cruise to Alaska. The northernmost American state offers an activity for everyone's interest and level of adventure. You can take a thrilling helicopter flight to explore a glacier on foot or observe miles of Alaska’s lush scenery and spy whales from a comfortable seat on a boat.

Princess Cruises

majestic princess in glacier bay alaska

A top choice for multi-generational families and larger groups seeking on-board experiences for a wide age range, Princess will sail seven ships to Alaska in 2024 — more than any other line. Princess also offers the most departure cities , potentially saving you money on airfare. Alaska sailings range from 4 to 22 days, though a week is the sweet spot. The line is also only one of seven permitted to enter the magnificent Glacier Bay National Park (shown); check out the tips at the end of the story for details.

Good Housekeeping Contributing Travel Editor Karen Cicero and her daughter recently sailed on Majestic Princess, a Family Travel Awards Winner , and raved about the ship's amenities, especially the Hollywood Pool Club. She described it as “an indoor space with a heated pool, plush loungers, and cabana-like spots that are free for all guests to use.” Cicero was also impressed with the entertainment and activities suitable for all ages, the excellent dining options and a supervised kids’ club for ages 3 to 12. "We saw grandparents and grandkids on the dance floor, at the shows, on the excursions — bonding moments were everywhere," Cicero said.

In 2024, Majestic Princess and Discovery Princess, the line's newest Alaska ship, will both sail roundtrip from Seattle. "You can't beat Princess if you're looking for an experience that will please all ages," said Cicero.

Departure Cities: Los Angeles; San Francisco; Seattle; Vancouver; Whittier, Alaska Cruise Ships: Crown Princess (2024 only); Grand Princess, Caribbean Princess (2025 only), Royal Princess, Sapphire Princess, Discovery Princess, Majestic Princess (2024 only), Crown Princess, Coral Princess (2025 only)

Norwegian Cruise Line

norwegian cruise line encore in alaska

Passengers are loyal to Norwegian for its beautiful ships, top-notch service and innovative amenities. The cruise line pioneered the concept of “freestyle cruising," which includes a flexible dining time. Flexible cruising continues to be a major selling point , according to our testers who recently sailed roundtrip from Seattle to Alaska on the Norwegian Encore (pictured). "We enjoyed not having to rush back to the ship after an excursion because we had a dinner reservation," said our tester who sailed with her spouse.

They also frequented the Encore’s Observation Lounge, where they were able to cozy up and spend hours searching for marine life from floor-to-ceiling windows. Activities and entertainment, like go-karting, slides and laser tag, are abundant. For a premium experience, consider booking a stateroom in The Haven. The Encore's most luxurious accommodations feature spacious rooms — the bathrooms are nearly double the size of those in standard staterooms — a private sundeck and a concierge.

The variety of sailings to Alaska is also another reason to choose Norwegian. "If Hawaii is also on your bucket list, Norwegian is one of the only cruise lines to offer a 16-day cruise departing from Honolulu that sails through both Hawaii and Alaska so you explore two dreamy destinations on one vacation," said Cicero. She added that Norwegian sails to Alaska until late October — about a month longer than most cruise lines.

Departure Cities: Honolulu; Seattle; Seward, Alaska; Vancouver; Whittier, Alaska (2025) Cruise Ships: Norwegian Encore, Norwegian Bliss, Norwegian Jewel (only in 2024), Norwegian Spirit (only in May 2024), Norwegian Sun, Norwegian Jade (only in 2025), Norwegian Joy (only in 2025)

Disney Cruise Line

disney cruise ship docked in ketchikan, alaska

Disney lovers will have the time of their lives sailing roundtrip from Vancouver to Alaska aboard the Disney Wonder. "It was the best experience ever," said a mom of two young adults who sailed on the ship in May 2023. "We felt like it was a great combination of Disney and Alaska."

On-board experiences brilliantly align with the destination. For instance, Disney characters are dressed in special outfits for Alaska and are on deck during the days at sea. "We were able to get incredible photos with the glaciers behind the characters," said the mom, who also noted that you can order Mickey Mouse ice cream bars from room service. Cicero added, "Disney has the best kids' and teen clubs of any cruise line. They're enormous, filled with epic activities like superhero training and are a great place for kids and teens to make friends."

If you want an equal dose of Disney and Alaska, this is the cruise for your crew. Sailings range from five to nine nights. All routes head to Stikine Icecap so guests can observe stunning glaciers, cliffs, waterfalls and wildlife.

Royal Caribbean International

juneau, alaska, usa

Royal Caribbean doesn’t only sail to the Caribbean. This global cruise line whisks passengers to Alaska from popular ports such as Seattle and Vancouver. You can choose a classic seven-night itinerary or a 13-night land-and-sea getaway.

Cruise enthusiasts at the Good Housekeeping Institute are fans of Royal Caribbean for its state-of-the-art ships, exceptional service and high-quality entertainment. "Royal Caribbean had the first rock-climbing wall and ice-skating rink on a cruise ship," said Cicero. "Since then, they've brought so many other epic activities to sea." For instance, Royal Caribbean’s Quantum Class, which includes Quantum of the Seas, Anthem of the Seas and Ovation of the Seas, offers skydiving, a surf simulator and a robot bar. "This line is an especially good fit for families with tweens, teens and young adults ," said Cicero, who sailed on Royal Caribbean with her teen daughter.

Departure Cities: Seattle; Seward, Alaska; Vancouver Cruise Ships: Quantum of the Seas, Anthem of the Seas, Radiance of the Seas, Brilliance of the Seas (only in 2024), Ovation of the Seas (only in 2024), Serenade of the Seas (only in 2025)

National Geographic Lindblad Expeditions

lindblad expeditions ship national geographic sea lion

For an incredible small-ship experience, look no further than the Lindblad Expeditions–National Geographic team-up. The largest of its ships that sail to Alaska can accommodate no more than 138 passengers — just a sliver of the 4,900 or so that Royal Caribbean's Quantum of the Seas can hold. " Being on a smaller vessel means that you’ll be able to sail right up to less frequented glaciers, waterfalls and fjords, " said Cicero.

Of course, an intimate experience comes at a higher price tag — its eight-day Alaskan adventure starts at about $6,200 per person, though you won't need to pay extra for excursions. "Voyages tend to be themed and stress the educational component," said Cicero. For instance, one focuses on coastal wildlife while another explores native cultures. A Good Housekeeping staff member who sailed the line to the Galápagos Islands (a providence of Ecuador) raved, "The ship was beautiful! I was super impressed with the staff and the service felt above and beyond.”

Departure Cities: Juneau, Alaska; Ketchikan, Alaska; Seattle; Sitka, Alaska Cruise Ships: National Geographic Quest, National Geographic Venture, National Geographic Sea Bird, National Geographic Sea Lion, National Geographic Resolution

Holland America Line

holland america line cruise to alaska

Holland America has a well-earned reputation for bringing guests to new destinations for more than 150 years. Its ships tend to be mid-sized — larger than Lindblad's offerings but smaller than the Quantum ships from Royal Caribbean. While Holland attracts an older demographic, its Alaskan cruises are often filled with multi-generational families.

One of the cruise line’s most popular itineraries is the Seven-Day Inside Passage, which takes you through Glacier Bay National Park, the Inside Passage, Tracy Arm Inlet and several must-visit port towns. But for adventure seekers curious to see as much of Alaska as possible, you’ll find tons of extended itineraries including a robust 28-day voyage that crosses the Arctic Circle.

Holland America is the only cruise line permitted to serve glacier ice, using it for cocktails like the Blue Iceberg and Juneau Gin & Tonic. The line also launched a new Alaskan-themed brunch menu offered once per cruise.

Departure Cities: Anchorage, Alaska (for land-sea tours only); Fairbanks, Alaska; Seattle; Vancouver, Whittier, Alaska Cruise Ships: Eurodam, Koningsdam, Nieuw Amsterdam, Noordam, Zuiderdam, Zaandam

Celebrity Cruises

topshot france transport sea tourism

Celebrity is popular with adults and couples looking for a premium onboard experience, including delicious cuisine, luxurious staterooms and a high-end spa . We can’t imagine a better way to rest and relax after spending a day exploring the Alaskan wilderness. Our travel experts suggest choosing one of Celebrity's many Alaska itineraries that sail through the Inside Passage and up to Dawes Glacier or Hubbard Glacier, two of the state’s gems.

Of the three Celebrity ships that sail to Alaska, we recommend the Celebrity Edge for those new to cruising or seeking a more contemporary experience. Launched in 2018, the ship features standout innovations like Eden, a multi-level bar with panoramic views, and the Magic Carpet, a multi-purpose floating space suspended directly above the sea.

Departure Cities: Seattle; Seward, Alaska; Vancouver Cruise Ships: Celebrity Solstice, Celebrity Summit, Celebrity Edge

Tips for booking your cruise to Alaska

line break

✔️ Check your itinerary. The itinerary you choose is key on an Alaskan cruise. If you have your heart set on visiting Glacier Bay National Park, make sure that your cruise line has it listed on the schedule. "Only seven lines were awarded the Glacier Bay contract by the National Park Service ," Cicero said. If you're not sure whether the cruise you have in mind will go through Glacier Bay, double-check with the cruise line or your travel agent.

✔️ Book shore excursions well in advance. Alaskan cruises generally sail from April to October. Because of the shorter season, your ship will likely be close to capacity and several ships may overlap in ports. Excursions will book up quickly. To secure your spot, book excursions well in advance or as soon as they're available.

✔️ Focus on family. Alaskan cruises are best for kids who are at least 5 years old. "Keep in mind that cruise lines don't allow kids who aren't potty-trained to be in pools, even if they're wearing a swim diaper," Cicero said. It's also worth noting that most cruise lines don't permit babies under 6 months or pregnant passengers who are 24 or more weeks along. Cicero advises families with school-age children to look for on-ship amenities, such as an indoor heated pool, a supervised kids' club and a variety of family-friendly nighttime entertainment. "Before you sail, you should also find out which non-alcoholic beverages are complimentary," Cicero said. "Many cruise lines charge extra for soft drinks, but milk and juice are usually included." Free room service is another big perk for families, she notes, so see if that's offered on the line you're considering.

✔️ Check your passport. Even if your cruise starts and stops in a U.S. port like Seattle, there's a high chance your ship will dock in Canada at some point throughout your trip. Also, " some of the excursions in Alaskan ports venture into Canada and will require a passport," explained Cicero. For instance, you may take the White Pass & Yukon Route Railway from Skagway into Yukon, a Canadian territory. Your passport will need to be valid for at least 6 months following the cruise.

✔️ Pack layers. This is especially crucial if you're traveling in Alaska's shoulder season — May and September. While May tends to be drier, temperatures remain relatively chilly. Likewise, September marks the end of the summer season and welcomes cooler temperatures and more rainfall. Because you'll be spending a lot of time outdoors, it's important to prepare for all weather scenarios, including windy conditions common to sailing cruise ships.

✔️ Book next summer's cruise soon. To get the best staterooms and excursions, start looking for a 2025 cruise in 2024, Cicero said, noting that many ships start to fill up at least 6 months in advance. And don't forget about major sale days. "Last year, cruise lines had fantastic Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals," she said.

Vancouver, a bustling west coast seaport in British Columbia, is among Canada’s densest, most ethnically diverse cities. A popular filming location, it’s surrounded by mountains, and also has thriving art, theatre and music scenes. Vancouver Art Gallery is known for its works by regional artists, while the Museum of Anthropology houses preeminent First Nations collections.

Humpback whales feed in Icy Strait above North Chichagof Island, an important travel corridor for many marine mammals, including federally threatened Steller's sea lions. The area's coastal marshes and mudflats are important as resting areas for shorebirds and waterfowl, and provide spring feeding areas for brown bears. Marbled murrelets feed in large numbers within the waters of Icy Strait and nest in the island's coastal old growth forest.

Hubbard Glacier

celebrity solstice alaska cruise

Stretching over 90 miles long and covering over 1,350 square miles in area, Hubbard Glacier is the largest tidewater glacier in North America. It is also one of the most impressive, a 300-foot wall of ice rising sheer and jagged from the ocean. You may hear the rumble and see the monumental splash as the glacier severs into great ice chunks, known as "calves."

Considered the "gem" of Southeast Alaska, the city is nestled against the ocean, tucked tight against the mountains and back-dropped by the lush green of the largest national forest in the United States, the Tongass. Visitors will find that Juneau is not only the state's capital, but it's also a melting pot of history, unique topography and jaw-dropping scenery that is found nowhere else on the planet. Whether it's wildlife viewing, glacier trekking, ziplining or just shopping for locally created artwork, visitors to this remote yet extraordinary region will certainly find a bit of "Alaska" to take home.

The 2008-built Celebrity Solstice cruise ship is the 1st of the Solstice-class Celebrity Cruises boats, together with Equinox , Silhouette , Eclipse , Reflection . Celebrity Cruises Solstice ship is scheduled for "Celebrity Revolution" drydock refurbishment on October 1, 2021.

History - construction and ownership

Celebrity Cruises was founded in 1988 as the Greece-based Chandris Line (cruise shipping operations between 1974-1996). In 1997, Royal Caribbean International (RCI) merged with "Celebrity Cruises Ltd" to become "Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd" (RCCL). The "X" on ship funnels is the Greek letter chi (standing for "Chandris"). Common features of Celebrity Cruises ships include aft located glass-walled dining rooms, signature alternate dining venues, bars and lounges, spacious Atrium lobby areas, a large number of balcony staterooms, large sundecks with swimming pools, The Retreat (adults-only sundeck with full-size swimming pool, Jacuzzi, cabanas, poolside full bar service). Celebrity Cruises Solstice-class ship model (Eclipse., Equinox, Silhouette, Solstice, Reflection)

The 2900-passenger ship Celebrity Solstice was the first to be a part of Celebrity's Solstice class. Solstice has many of the personal amenities that cruisers have come to expect from the line, while able to transport almost 3000 passengers. Each of the vessels in the Solstice class has wireless Internet connectivity, bigger staterooms with HDTVs, large bathrooms, more storage space, and plush European bedding. The Solstice-class ships also offer an extraordinary range of customer-inspired services and amenities made possible due to the liners' bigger size.

Itineraries

Celebrity Solstice itinerary program is based on 7-day roundtrips to Alaska from Seattle WA during summer. During the rest of the year, the ship sails on South Pacific Islands, Australia and NZ cruises from Auckland and Sydney . The Solstice also visits Hawaii on repositioning crossings between Alaska and Australia.

Due to the Coronavirus crisis, the Celebrity ship Solstice was paused for 2+ years (March 2020 thru May 2022). Operations were scheduled to restart on May 6, 2022, with 7-day Alaskan itineraries (from homeport Seattle). The following Asian deployment for winter 2022-23 (based on homeporting in Singapore, Hong Kong, Yokohama, and 12-day itineraries) was eventually canceled and replaced with 7-day Mexican Riviera voyages from homeport Los Angeles . The Mexican program was previously assigned to the fleetmate Millennium (repositioned to the Caribbean). A total of 17x Asian itineraries (departures between Sept 16, 2022, and April 21, 2023) were canceled.

Plan your next family vacation to explore the boundless beauty of the 49th state.

The Best Alaska Cruises for Families

A cruise to Alaska is a once-in-a-lifetime family or multigenerational vacation. With unique opportunities for wildlife viewing and outdoor adventures that you won't find anywhere else in the world – not to mention scenic cruising days on the ship to spend time together – this special experience will stay with you forever.

For an extended vacation in the 49th state, consider booking a cruisetour. This combined cruise and pre- or post-cruise land tour option is offered by many of the larger cruise lines. The tours visit some of the top attractions in the state , such as Denali National Park and Preserve, and often include picturesque rides into Alaska's remote wilderness aboard the Alaska Railroad. Some tours also head north to Fairbanks and visit Kenai Fjords National Park or Wrangell-St. Elias National Park (or both, in some cases). You can choose between fully escorted adventures or laid-back options to explore on your own, depending on what works best for your family.

Ready to book your Alaska adventure? These eight cruise lines offer excellent family-friendly excursions ashore , plus plenty of onboard activities to keep both kids and parents entertained during days at sea.

Departure city: Vancouver, British Columbia

The 2024 cruise season brings Princess' 55th-anniversary sailing to The Great Land, and the line is offering more than 150 Alaska voyages between April and September. The popular Voyage of the Glaciers with Glacier Bay itinerary northbound from Vancouver to Anchorage (Whittier), Alaska , is available on dozens of dates this season on Grand Princess , Royal Princess or Sapphire Princess . The sailing includes stops in the ports of Ketchikan, Juneau and Skagway, as well as scenic cruising in beautiful Glacier Bay National Park & Preserve and College Fjord in Alaska. If you prefer a smaller ship, choose Grand Princess or Sapphire Princess, which hold 2,610 and 2,680 passengers (double occupancy), respectively. Meanwhile, Royal Princess accommodates 3,560 guests at double occupancy.

The Princess Cruises North to Alaska program features immersive, family-friendly opportunities to learn about the history and traditions of the 49th state. Guests can sample fresh local seafood and meet famous Alaskans such as Libby Riddles, the first woman to win the 1,100-mile Iditarod dog race. In Skagway, families can meet some of the newest sled dogs and their handlers during Puppies in the Piazza on the ship. Younger cruisers and teens can participate in the Alaska Explorers Youth Program in partnership with Glacier Bay National Park and the Discovery Channel, which includes activities like the "Deadliest Catch" Crab Sort Challenge.

The North to Alaska program also partners with Discovery and Animal Planet to feature onboard exhibits about Alaska, as well as curated excursions like the White Pass Rail Bennett Lake & Yukon Adventure in Skagway, which was created by a train historian. Back on the ship, kids and teens can hang out with other young cruisers their age at Camp Discovery's Treehouse (ages 3 to 7), Lodge (8 to 12) or Beach House (13 to 17). In addition, be sure to keep an eye out for Princess Cruises' Alaska mascot: Stanley the Bear. You might even find him during story time at the kids clubs wearing a captain's uniform or destination-themed costumes, such as lumberjack gear in Ketchikan.

The entire family will enjoy excursions like the Whale Watching & Bear Search tour in Icy Strait Point, while thrill-seekers of all ages will want to book an adrenaline-pumping ride down the mountain on the massive ZipRider zip line. In Ketchikan, take a hike through Tongass National Forest, the largest national forest in the U.S., where you might catch glimpses of wildlife like black bears or bald eagles. You can also head offshore from Ketchikan aboard the Aleutian Ballad, the famed ship from Discovery Channel's "Deadliest Catch," to pick up the day's bounty of king crab and search for marine wildlife along Alaska's Inside Passage.

Plenty of family activities and entertainment options are offered on this Norwegian Cruise Line ship, including the Bliss Speedway, a two-level racetrack at sea; laser tag; mini-golf; an interactive aqua park with waterslides that zip above the side of the ship; a video arcade; and live entertainment. You'll also find kids clubs designed for younger children and teens , as well as adults-only escapes like Vibe Beach Club and Spice H2O. When it comes to dining, there's no shortage of casual fare for hungry kids at venues like the Garden Café buffet, American Diner and The Local Bar & Grill.

The weeklong Disney Cruise Line sailing includes glacier viewing along the Stikine Icecap and stops in Skagway, Juneau and Ketchikan. Many of the ship's nautical-themed staterooms are designed with families in mind and feature a "split bath" concept and extra under-bed storage for suitcases. Disney Wonder can hold 1,750 passengers at double occupancy and 2,700 passengers at maximum capacity. The ship's unique rotational dining venues include an "under the sea" adventure at Triton's, a dinner show with Disney characters at Animator's Palate and Southern specialties with jazz music at Tiana's Place. You can also take an extended six-hour tour by boat into Alaska's deepest fjord, Lynn Canal, then hike through the rainforest to reach your canoe for a wilderness safari at Glacier Point. A wildlife expert on the ship helps guests spot Alaska's incredible marine and land animals through announcements and during daily programs. Keep an eye out for humpback whales, orcas, sea otters, moose, brown bears and other wildlife. While in the Tracy Arm Wilderness Area, you'll want to take the Tracy Arm Fjord & Glacier Explorer excursion to explore glacier-covered mountains, jagged cliffs and the largest temperate rainforest in the U.S. surrounding the fjord. On a high-speed catamaran, you'll get up-close views of the Sawyer Glaciers and have potential sightings of harbor seals, bears, mountain goats and more.

Back on board, Holland America Line 's kids club offers supervised, age-appropriate activities for young cruisers ages 3 to 17 – including children who may need certain accommodations. You'll also find plenty of family-friendly options for dining on Koningsdam, including Lido Market, New York Pizza and the poolside Dive In grill. The 8 best Hawaii cruises in 2024 and 2025

C ruising the Hawaiian Islands offers U.S. travelers an immersive South Pacific escape with all the comforts of home. In fact, the Aloha State is in many ways an ideal cruise destination. It has year-round sunny weather, four main islands featuring varied topographies — including sandy beaches, cascading waterfalls, volcanic mountains and vibrant green valleys — and a wide array of land- and water-based activities.

The main caveat? Hawaii cruise options are somewhat limited — just a fraction of what's available in the Caribbean — and many itineraries involve multiday crossings from the West Coast. Only one cruise line offers Hawaii itineraries throughout the year; most others visit during specific months or when repositioning ships in spring and fall.

Looking for the Hawaiian Islands sailing that's right for you? Here's a look at the eight best Hawaii cruises for every type of traveler.

Norwegian Cruise Line's 7-night Inter-island Hawaii

For travelers who want more aloha time than the typical eight-hour port call allows, Norwegian Cruise Line has a solution. Its 2,186-passenger Pride of America lets vacationers sample four Hawaiian islands over seven days, with overnights in Maui and Kauai, plus port calls on both Hilo and Kona on the island of Hawaii. In total, this itinerary offers nearly 100 hours of shore time.

Pride of America sails round-trip from Honolulu every Saturday year-round. As a U.S.-flagged ship, it's the only large vessel permitted to sail this way. Not only do you skip the long Pacific crossing that most cruise ships do to reach Hawaii, but passports are not required for U.S. citizens, and you can tack on pre- or post-cruise stays on Oahu.

The overnights on Maui and Kauai also mean it's possible to try several of Hawaii's signature experiences that most port calls don't allow. Passengers can catch dusk or dawn from atop Maui's massive 10,023-foot dormant volcano with sunrise and sunset excursions to the Haleakala Crater. And with the ship in port all night on Kauai, guests who want to enjoy traditional Hawaiian cuisine, music and hula performances can book the Luau Kalamaku for a fun evening out.

Pride of America, which has been cruising Hawaii since 2005, doesn't have the onboard thrills (race track, virtual-reality gaming, waterslides) of Norwegian's newer ships , but that's okay because the islands, not the ship, are your main destination. Its American-themed decor celebrates U.S. cities in a vibrant, and at times, kitschy way, but a 2021 refurbishment left its cabins and public spaces feeling refreshed.

Many of Norwegian's specialty dining venues (which incur a surcharge) are on board, including Cagney's Steakhouse, Le Bistro (here, it's Jefferson's Bistro), Moderno Churrascaria and Teppanyaki.

Who should go: Anyone seeking a convenient way to island-hop — and see a lot of Hawaii — by making the most of the generous shore time with a combination of independent exploration and shore excursions. Most sailings attract couples ages 50 and older, although summer and holiday sailings have plenty of families on board.

UnCruise Adventures' 7-night Hawaiian Seascapes

Cruisers seeking a less traditional, more carefree Hawaii experience can have it from November to April aboard UnCruise Adventures ' 36-passenger Safari Explorer. The seven-night Hawaiian Seascapes itinerary, which begins either on Molokai or the island of Hawaii, is an unconventional one designed for those who enjoy going off the beaten path in an intimate and more authentic setting. U.S. passports aren't required to sail.

UnCruise visits four islands — Maui and Lanai plus Molokai and Hawaii — and focuses on not only their striking landscapes and underwater beauty but also the cultural traditions, cuisine and music of the Hawaiian people. On Molokai, where there's not a single traffic light and the lifestyle is slow-paced, passengers get a chance to "talk story" with locals and enjoy a pa'ina (feast) and evening jam session. Lanai activities range from snorkel, paddleboard and kayak excursions to off-road adventures exploring the privately owned island's dramatic sea cliffs, red rock formations and vast fields once filled with Dole pineapples.

Most UnCruise sailings are during Maui's humpback whale season, so sightings while cruising off the coast of Maui are possible. You might also catch glimpses of dolphins and sea turtles. A "Captain's Choice" day is a wild card determined by the weather, marine life in the area and other factors, while the final two days are spent exploring the Big Island of Hawaii — including a hike up Hualalai volcano and a skiff ride along the rugged coast.

Constructed in 1998, Safari Explorer was designed with adventure itineraries in mind (in summer the U.S.-flagged ship repositions to Alaska). Its size allows it to navigate areas larger ships can't reach, which in Hawaii means bays and coves ideal for snorkeling or watersports.

With such a small number of passengers aboard, guests get to know each other — and Safari Explorer's friendly and knowledgeable crew — quite well. Passengers come together over meals featuring locally sourced ingredients, and as all UnCruise fares include unlimited wines, spirits and microbrews, shipmates can raise a glass without worrying who's buying a round. It all lends itself to an exclusive yet utterly relaxed week of cruising.

Who should go: The ship's laid-back onboard vibe paired with its land- and water-based activities make the Hawaiian Seascapes itinerary ideal for active travelers seeking a nature-focused itinerary — although cruise fares (which start around $5,900 per person) are among the priciest for a Hawaii cruise.

Holland America's 17-night Circle Hawaii

Travelers who have more than two weeks to spare and who prefer to arrive in Hawaii via ship rather than an airplane can do so on Holland America 's 17-night Circle Hawaii itinerary. They'd better also love sea days because crossing the Pacific from San Diego or Vancouver to Honolulu and back requires 10 days.

That means passengers enjoy five or six days in Hawaii on Kauai, Oahu, Maui and the island of Hawaii. Some itineraries stay in select ports overnight. Cruises departing from San Diego also call on Ensenada, Mexico. With either departure port, passports will be required.

The itinerary is offered in 2024 and 2025 on the 2,650-passenger Koningsdam and 1,432-passenger Zaandam.

Travelers with more time on their hands can also visit Hawaii as part of longer Pacific island cruises with Holland America. Koningsdam will sail a 35-night Hawaii, Tahiti & Marquesas itinerary in 2025 that combines visits to four Hawaiian islands with calls on five islands in French Polynesia and Fanning Island, Kiribati (and 20 sea days).

Related: Holland America unveils epic cruise to Hawaii and Alaska for 2025

Zaandam will also sail 51- to 56-night Tales of the South Pacific itineraries that visit multiple islands in Hawaii and French Polynesia along with ports in the Cook Islands, American Samoa and Fiji.

Holland America is popular with cruisers ages 60 and older, many of them retired, who have time to enjoy longer itineraries on ships that offer good value with a focus on culinary and musical enjoyment. Two of Koningsdam's most popular venues are its live entertainment area with three venues — B.B. King's Blues Club (for Memphis-style rhythm and blues), Billboard Onboard (for chart-topping hits played by a live pianist) and Rolling Stone Rock Room (for a live band playing classic rock), and World Stage, a theater with a 270-degree screen used for both special BBC Earth in Concert and theatrical productions.

Onboard specialty dining options (at an added cost) include Pinnacle Grill for steaks and seafood, Tamarind for Pan-Asian cuisine and Rudi's Sel de Mer for French Brasserie specialties and seafood.

Who should go: Mature travelers who prefer not to fly and who enjoy a more traditional cruise experience. They should also love sea days as much (or even more so) than port exploration.

Princess Cruises' 15- or 16-night Hawaiian Islands

Princess Cruises is also a good option for longer sailings. The cruise line offers numerous round-trip itineraries to Hawaii from Los Angeles, San Francisco and San Diego in the fall and winter.

The majority of sailings are aboard the 3,080-passenger Crown Princess and Ruby Princess from San Francisco, and the 2,600-passenger Grand Princess and 3,080-passenger Emerald Princess from Los Angeles.

Ships are in port for nine to 11 hours in Hawaii (Hilo), Kauai and Maui and for 16 hours in Oahu. Itineraries include a stop in Ensenada, Mexico (so passports are required), plus nine or 10 sea days.

The ships feature many of Princess' popular dining venues, including Alfredo's Pizzeria (a sit-down venue serving personal-size pizzas), Crown Grill for steaks and Sabatini's Italian Trattoria. There's plenty of outdoor space for soaking up the sun — including an adults-only sun deck — and a dazzling Piazza for enjoying cocktails, gelato and pop-up street performers.

Fans of Princess' Movies Under the Stars poolside screenings (with free popcorn) and Discovery at SEA enrichment programming will have ample time to enjoy these perks on a Hawaii sailing.

Who should go: These sailings will appeal to couples or groups of friends who prefer to have a wide choice of sailing dates, can take the time to enjoy a leisurely Pacific crossing and appreciate Princess' focus on quality cuisine and a sun deck designed for relaxation rather than thrills.

Celebrity's 9- to 12-night Hawaii Cruise

Travelers seeking modern interior decor on a ship designed with couples in mind can visit Hawaii aboard Celebrity Cruises ' 2,852-passenger Celebrity Solstice or 2,918-passenger Celebrity Edge on itineraries ranging from nine to 13 nights — but only if the timing is right. That's because the line offers only two sailings per ship each year (in spring and fall) as the ships reposition between Alaska and destinations in the Pacific. The itineraries are one-way (Vancouver to Honolulu or vice versa) with passports required.

These cruises call on three ports on two islands: Honolulu (Oahu) and Hilo and Kona (Hawaii), with one or two overnights in port and 10 hours ashore on one-day visits. All include five days in a row at sea. Since the itineraries either begin or end in Honolulu, there's also a chance for some pre- or post-cruise exploration.

Sea days offer opportunities to enjoy the chic, grown-up ambience and amenities aboard these ships. Each vessel offers multiple complimentary and extra-fee specialty restaurants. Celebrity Solstice features Tuscan Grille for Italian specialties and steak and Murano for modern French cuisine, while Celebrity Edge offers the whimsical Le Petit Chef and the international Eden Restaurant.

Celebrity's signature Martini Bar and many other onboard watering holes keep the grown-up vibe going day and night. Choose cruise fares that include alcohol and Wi-Fi, or pay a lower rate and pay for your drinks as you go.

Who should go: The slightly shorter one-way sailings and the ships' contemporary ambience make these itineraries ideal for couples and groups of friends seeking a relaxing escape — especially Gen Xers in their 40s and 50s, who are Celebrity's target market.

Carnival's 14- or 15-night Hawaii from Los Angeles

If fun is your cruise mantra, the "Fun Ship" brand Carnival Cruise Line offers a handful of round-trip sailings to Hawaii from Los Angeles (Long Beach) aboard the 2,984-passenger Carnival Radiance. Like other roundtrips from the West Coast, these itineraries spend just five days in Hawaii, offering eight to 14 hours of shore time in ports on four islands: Maui, Kauai, Oahu and Hawaii. Along with enjoying eight sea days, guests will also call on Ensenada, Mexico, so passports are required.

Carnival Radiance first sailed under that name in 2021, but it's not a new ship. Before an epic makeover, it sailed for the cruise line as Carnival Victory. Ship features include many of Carnival's signature complimentary and extra-fee dining venues, including Guy's Burger Joint and Pig & Anchor Bar-B-Que Smokehouse, BlueIguana Cantina, Fahrenheit 555 Steakhouse and Bonsai Sushi Express.

Additional guest favorite destinations on board include the RedFrog Pub, Alchemy Bar and WaterWorks aquapark. Expect high-voltage theater shows from Playlist Productions at night and poolside interactive contests by day.

Who should go: Socially inclined cruisers who love Carnival's emphasis on onboard fun and can appreciate a colorful ship with a lively ambience and lots of day and evening activities.

Royal Caribbean's 9- to 13-night Hawaii Cruises

A megaship cruise experience to Hawaii is available, too — with pricing that's quite affordable. Royal Caribbean cruises there on two vessels in one of its newer classes of ships: the 4,180-passenger Quantum of the Seas and Ovation of the Seas.

All are one-way cruises just before or after the Alaska cruise season (so late April or early October) between Oahu and Vancouver (or vice versa). The ships call on two Hawaiian islands and spend four or five days in a row at sea. Passports are required since these itineraries begin or end in Vancouver.

Ovation of the Seas and Quantum of the Seas feature a mix of thrills for all ages. These include RipCord by iFly simulated sky diving, FlowRider simulated surfing, bumper car racing in the SeaPlex indoor activity complex and the North Star sightseeing capsule, which ascends 300 feet above the top deck for 360-degree views.

Both ships also offer 14 dining venues, including the innovative Wonderland, Jamie's Italian by Jamie Oliver and kid-favorite Dog House, as well as bar options that include Schooner Bar for by-request piano tunes, Boleros for mojitos and merengue and Bionic Bar for drinks poured by robotic bartenders. Entertainment includes live cover bands in the Music Hall and multimedia music and dance performances in Two70.

Who should go: Cruisers who love a big ship with a wide array of dining choices, all kinds of evening entertainment and plenty of exciting activities to pass the time on sea days. Quantum-class ships are great for families, but the sail dates might not work for those with school-age kids.

Viking's 16-night Hawaiian Islands Sojourn

For a guaranteed adults-only sailing in a relaxed, boutique-style setting, upscale cruise line Viking also offers round-trip Hawaii cruises from Los Angeles in late 2024 and early 2025 on its 930-passenger Viking Neptune.

What sets Viking apart from most of the other lines offering Hawaii cruises is that it includes a free shore excursion in every port. These include a highlights tour of Honolulu and Pearl Harbor on Oahu and a visit to a scenic waterfall and the Kilohana sugar plantation on Kauai. Additional excursions can be booked at an extra charge.

The 16-night Hawaiian Islands Sojourn sailings visit four islands — Hawaii (Hilo), Oahu, Kauai and Maui — and like other round-trip sailings from the West Coast include 10 sea days and a call on Ensenada, Mexico, so passports are required.

Viking Neptune will also do 32-night Grand Hawaii and Polynesia sailings round-trip from Los Angeles in late 2024 and early 2025 that visit four islands in Hawaii and four in French Polynesia.

The ship, which debuted in 2022, features sleek Scandinavian-inspired decor, a soothing spa with a complimentary thermal area, an aft infinity pool and hot tub, a panoramic Explorer's Lounge and five onboard restaurants. Specialty restaurant Manfredi's serves an extensive menu of Italian specialties, while The Chef's Table offers rotating five-course themed menus, including Asian, French and California-inspired.

In addition to the free shore excursions, pricing includes complimentary wine or beer with lunch and dinner, specialty dining at no extra charge, crew gratuities and transfers.

Who should go: Couples who prefer the quieter ambience of a ship that doesn't allow anyone under 18 onboard, doesn't have a casino and offers presentations by regional experts that enhance immersion into local culture. Viking cruisers are generally over age 55.
