PROBIOTICS Probiotics aren't just essential for digestive and colon health, they also boost your health in general... Probiotics are the beneficial microbial flora that we all need for optimal health. These "good" bacteria (and yeast) colonize our digestive and urinary tracts and the vagina in women where they grow and help to maintain the health of our mucous membranes. You can think of this in the same way as sowing your lawn with grass seed to create a thick, lush carpet of grass that can protect against the growth of weeds. Probiotics seed your body with beneficial bacteria to help protect against the growth of pathological ("bad") microbes like E. coli and Candida . This helps no matter the location of the mucous membrane in the body: whether the vagina, bladder or GI tract. In the gut they also promote proper digestion and in some cases actually produce or functionally convert essential nutrients for our absorption and use. Many normal, bodily functions require healthy gut flora, and their effects range from healthy immune function to proper heart function and skin health. The Types of Friendly Bacteria In general, probiotics can be categorized by where they are used in the body. For example, there are friendly bacteria, which only grow in the small intestine and those that proliferate only in the large intestine (colon). But, believe it or not, beneficial bacteria exist in the mouth, urinary tract, stomach, vagina, and even on the surface of the skin. Certain strains colonize certain areas of the body more easily than others.  Lack of Healthy Gut Flora Without healthy gut flora, a number of conditions can result including: poor assimilation of nutrients, intestinal irritation, diarrhea or constipation. Both naturopathic and medical doctors recognize the importance that the gut flora plays in overall health. Certain strains of Lactobacillus have been shown to be crucial for producing important immune factors, while others have been shown to be crucial for the reduction of bad cholesterol. Many infections are more common in those without proper body flora, including: gastroenteritis (the "stomach flu"), vaginal yeast infections, urinary tract infections (UTIs), and even skin conditions like acne. Immune Regulation Proper colonization of the gut by beneficial bacteria helps to regulate our entire immune system. Well over 70% of our immune cells are actually located in our gut tissue as "gut associated lymphatic tissue (GALT). These cells are constantly interacting with the bacteria in our gut, and having good bacteria present can help to train our immune system to be properly active against pathogens and tolerant to everything else. This is how probiotics can help to reduce and prevent autoimmune diseases such as: lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, irritable bowel disease, psoriasis, and eczema. Anti-infection and Detox Candida infections can be particularly stubborn and often require long-term use of a probiotic in addition to the use of other therapies. The same need for probiotics exists in instances of food poisoning, which not only deplete gut flora, but can also cause damage to the intestinal lining; the use of a high cell count, therapeutic probiotic is therefore appropriate if you've had food poisoning. Another common use for probiotics is for preventing parasites and diarrhea while traveling. Whether the gut flora has been lost due to diarrhea or due to an intentional cleanse, probiotic supplements can perform a "rebuilding" function, helping to replenish friendly bacteria that have been depleted. What to Look for in a Probiotic There are literally thousands of probiotic supplements available in health food stores today; with so many available it can be difficult to know which one is best for you or your family. A multi-strain probiotic is frequently the best way to go for most people. This type of probiotic can supply you with at least 6, 8 or even as many as 10 or 20 different strains of healthy bacteria. Your body naturally contains a wide variety of strains, so it makes sense to take a supplement with as broad a spectrum as possible. This will give you the greatest coverage to replenish or maintain the natural gut flora. The greater the diversity, the greater the strength of your body's flora. Probiotic Source There are a number of different sources of probiotics. Some companies get their strains from soil sources (like HSO's), while some get them from lab strains, and still others from strains extracted from healthy human sources. There are a mind-boggling number of strains of bacteria available of each species of bacteria. Lactobacillus acidophilus is a species of bacteria and it has a vast number of different strains that are labeled using a chain of letters and numbers. We know very little about the specific differences of each species, and so the medical community tends to group the bacteria by species and ignore the strain in most cases. In addition to bacteria, some probiotics are other organisms; one great example of this are beneficial yeast called S. boulardii. Targeted Probiotic Therapy That being said, there are particular therapeutic probiotics, which are targeted towards certain health concerns. The homeostatic soil organism (HSO) type of probiotic contains healthy bacteria from soils. In years past we would have ingested these from root vegetables grown in the ground, but in our modern sanitized world, where we purchase cleaned vegetables from supermarkets, it's difficult for us to get it from food unless we're growing them ourselves. This particular type of beneficial bacteria has been clinically proven to help remove Candida. Shelf Stability Because they are living organisms, probiotics have a shorter shelf life than standard nutritional supplements. It is best to store them in fridge, especially if you aren't going to finish the bottle quickly. When exposed to cooler temperatures, microorganisms slow their metabolism, which brings them near to a point of stasis; This allows them to be stored for longer periods of time without a nutrient source. At room temperature, the organisms must be preserved in some other manner: either chemically in a protective coating (microencapsulation) or they must be stored in much larger concentrations and with a food source such as FOS and glucose so they can "eat" in order to survive. Most high quality supplements intended for the fridge will remain shelf stable with their label count for up to two weeks at room temperature, but prolonged time exposed to elevated temperatures will eventually result in a die off of your chilled probiotic. Research is conflicted about how long probiotics degrade naturally at room temperature, which is likely the result of differences between strains and manufacturing methods. Some healthy gut flora supplements will degrade at less than 5% of the total active cell count under normal cupboard conditions over the span of about thirty days, which will allow them to last for several months without significant losses. Often these are the brands considered to be more shelf stable. Other supplements will lose their entire living microbial count within 2-3 weeks. In general, it is best to follow the instructions on the bottle for storage. Those that say "shelf-stable" are ones that have been properly preserved or have initial counts high enough to last until their expiry date with the counts stated on the label. Take Them With or Without Food? Very recent research has finally solved the "with or without food" debate. It was found that taking probiotics with food helped larger numbers of them (up to 90%) survive into the intestines, vs. 50% survival on an empty stomach. Before, it was thought that taking probiotics on an empty stomach would help more viable bacterial cells to pass through the stomach to reach their destination in the small or large intestines than taking them with food. It turns out that food actually acts as a buffer to reduce stomach acidity and also promotes increased motility in the gut, helping to speed the probiotic to its destination. So it is best to take your probiotic supplement with a meal to improve its function. Active Cell Count – How potent is your probiotic? Unlike vitamins, minerals, and herbs, probiotic supplements are measured by active cell count rather than milligram weight (some bacteria are "fatter" than others). A high potency probiotic would be considered in the 10 billion cell count or higher. These are excellent for use in times of depletion and stress on the gastrointestinal tract. They are also useful during times of infection, where higher probiotic counts can help to out-compete pathological "bugs". For regular maintenance, lesser counts may be sufficient, such as 2-4 billion daily. Maintenance Supplementation Some recent research has suggested that following an initial period of high-dose supplementation to seed the gut (perhaps 4 weeks), probiotic supplementation can be dosed in pulses and still maintain its beneficial colonization. Maintenance supplementation can involve 3 weeks of daily supplementation, followed by 4 weeks without supplementation, and beneficial levels of healthy gut bacteria will still be maintained. Unfortunately, because our diets are so far removed from natural sources of beneficial probiotics, maintenance supplementation is often necessary, particularly in individuals with compromised digestion. How can I take probiotics? Most probiotics come in powder or capsule form for easy supplementation. They can be mixed with warm or cold food directly (not hot), or simply taken with meals. Other supplements may come in powder and lozenge form probiotics help to inoculate the mouth and esophagus with millions of helpful bacteria. Multi-strain formulas are always the best option to ensure a wider base of colonization and protection. It is best to try to get at least 4 strains, although better products will contain 8 or more. Keep your counts in mind – 10 billion range for initial colonization and maintenance doses can be lower, in the 2+ billion range. Dosing may have to be adapted in times of added stress on the intestinal tract, during time of chemotherapy, antibiotic treatment, or diarrhea. Some foods are enriched with probiotics, but many do not provide their dose, and they often fall short of what is required. Be sure to use the same requirements in your food sources as in your supplements when choosing where to spend your money on probiotics. When dosing children, the strain ratios and dosages will be different than those for adults. It may be best to purchase products targeted at your child's age range. These chewable probiotics are free of sugar, gluten, fish, shellfish, egg, soy, peanuts, and milk, but unfortunately also don’t include a prebiotic. They also have a range of artificial colors and flavors to give them the cherry flavor to encourage your kids to take them.

If you can get your kids to swallow tablets, I’d recommend they take one of the other supplements in these reviews. However, if chewables are the only way your children will take probiotics, then Healthy Origins is a good one to consider.

Of course, you can take multiple tablets to reach the correct dosage you want to ingest – but just keep this in mind when purchasing probiotics. Probiotic A, with 60 pills for $10, might sound cheap compared to probiotic B, with 30 tablets for $25, but if you need to take three tablets from probiotic A for the same dose as probiotic B, then it’s more expensive.

Another recommendation is to look for probiotics that contain a prebiotic. A prebiotic is food for probiotics, which then encourages the probiotic to flourish and, in turn, create a more good gut microbiome.

2024 federal budget's key takeaways: Housing and carbon rebates, students and sin taxes

Budget sees nearly $53b in new spending over the next 5 years.

Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland today tabled a 400-page-plus budget her government is pitching as a balm for anxious millennials and Generation Z.

The budget proposes $52.9 billion in new spending over five years, including $8.5 billion in new spending for housing. To offset some of that new spending, Ottawa is pitching policy changes to bring in new revenue.

Here are some of the notable funding initiatives and legislative commitments in budget 2024.

Ottawa unloading unused offices to meet housing targets

One of the biggest pillars of the budget is its housing commitments. Before releasing the budget, the government laid out what it's calling Canada's Housing Plan — a pledge to "unlock" nearly 3.9 million homes by 2031.

The government says two million of those would be net new homes and it believes it can contribute to more than half of them. 

It plans to do that by:

• Converting underused federal offices into homes. The budget promises $1.1 billion over ten years to transform 50 per cent of the federal office portfolio into housing.
• Building homes on Canada Post properties. The government says the 1,700-plus Canada Post offices across the country can be used to build new homes while maintaining postal services. The federal government says it's assessing six Canada Post properties in Quebec, Alberta and British Columbia for development potential "as a start."
• Rethinking National Defence properties. The government is promising to look at redeveloping properties and buildings on National Defence lands for military and civilian use.
• Building apartments. Ottawa is pledging a $15 billion top-up to the Apartment Construction Loan Program, which says it will build 30,000 new homes across Canada.

Taxing vacant land?

As part of its push on housing, the federal government also says it's looking at vacant land that could be used to build homes.

It's not yet committing to new measures but the budget says the government will consider introducing a new tax on residentially zoned vacant land.

The government said it plans to launch consultations on the measure later this year.

Help for students 

There's also something in the budget for students hunting for housing.

The government says it will update the formula used by the Canada Student Financial Assistance Program to calculate housing costs when determining financial need, to better reflect the cost of housing in the current climate.

The government estimates this could deliver more aid for rent to approximately 79,000 students each year, at an estimated cost of $154.6 million over five years.

The government is also promising to extend increased student grants and interest-free loans, at an estimated total cost of $1.1 billion this year.

Increase in taxes on capital gains

To help cover some of its multi-billion dollar commitments, the government is proposing a tax hike on capital gains — the profit individuals make when assets like stocks and second properties are sold.

The government is proposing an increase in the taxable portion of capital gains, up from the current 50 per cent to two thirds for annual capital gains over $250,000. 

New investment to lead 'housing revolution in Canada,' Freeland says

Freeland said the change would impact the wealthiest 0.1 per cent.

There's still some protection for small businesses. There's been a lifetime capital gains exemption which allows Canadians to exempt up to $1,016,836 in capital gains tax-free on the sale of small business shares and farming and fishing property. This June the tax-free limit will be increased to $1.25 million and will continue to be indexed to inflation thereafter, according to the budget.

The federal government estimates this could bring in more than $19 billion over five years, although some analysts are not convinced.

Disability benefit amounts to $200 per month 

Parliament last year passed the Canada Disability Benefit Act, which promised to send a direct benefit to low-income, working-age people with disabilities. 

Budget 2024 proposes funding of $6.1 billion over six years, beginning this fiscal year, and $1.4 billion per year ongoing, for a new Canada Disability Benefit.

Advocates had been hoping for something along the lines of $1,000 per month per person . They'll be disappointed.

According to the budget document, the maximum benefit will amount to $2,400 per year for low income individuals with disabilities between the ages of 18 and 64 — about $200 a month.

The government said it plans for the Canada Disability Benefit Act to come into force in June 2024 and for payments to start in July 2025.

Carbon rebate for small businesses coming 

The federal government has heard an earful from small business advocates who accuse it of reneging on a promise to return a portion of carbon pricing revenues to small businesses to mitigate the tax's economic costs.

The budget proposes to return fuel charge proceeds from 2019-20 through 2023-24 to an estimated 600,000 businesses with 499 or fewer employees through a new refundable tax credit.

The government said this would deliver $2.5 billion directly to Canada's small- and medium-sized businesses.

Darts and vape pods will cost more 

Pitching it as a measure to cut the number of people smoking and vaping, the Liberals are promising to raise revenues on tobacco and smoking products.

Starting Wednesday, the total tobacco excise duty will be $5.49 per carton. The government estimates this could increase federal revenue by $1.36 billion over five years starting in 2024-25.

The budget also proposes to increase the vaping excise duty rates by 12 per cent effective July 1. That means an increase of 12 to 24 cents per pod, depending on where you live.

Ottawa hopes this increase in sin taxes will bring in $310 million over five years, starting in 2024-25.

More money for CBC 

Heritage Minister Pascale St-Onge has mused about redefining the role of the public broadcaster before the next federal election . But before that happens, CBC/Radio-Canada is getting a top-up this year. 

The budget promises $42 million more in 2024-25 for CBC/Radio-Canada for "news and entertainment programming." CBC/Radio-Canada received about $1.3 billion in total federal funding last year.

The government says it's doing this to ensure that Canadians across the country, including rural, remote, Indigenous and minority language communities, have access to independent journalism and entertainment.

Last year, the CBC announced a financial shortfall, cut 141 employees and eliminated 205 vacant positions. In a statement issued Tuesday, CBC spokesperson Leon Mar said the new funding means the corporation can balance its budget "without significant additional reductions this year."

Boost for Canada's spy agency 

As the government takes heat over how it has handled the threat of foreign election interference, it's promising more money to bolster its spy service.

The Canadian Security Intelligence Service is in line to receive $655.7 million over eight years, starting this fiscal year, to enhance its intelligence capabilities and its presence in Toronto.

The budget also promises to guarantee up to $5 billion in loans for Indigenous communities to participate in natural resource development and energy projects in their territories.

These loans would be provided by financial institutions or other lenders and guaranteed by the federal government, meaning Indigenous borrowers who opt in could benefit from lower interest rates, the budget says.

Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky’s 10-year pay package , announced in 2021, could hit $1 billion or more if the company’s share price hits certain price targets, reports Executive Editor Dennis Schaal.  

Airbnb said recently the potential value of Cheksy’s eight remaining tranches of unearned shares at the end of 2023 was $1.3 billion. However, Schaal notes it’s far from certain that Chesky will receive the shares. Airbnb awarded Chesky a pay package with 12 million restricted stock units that the company valued at $430 million in November 2020 before Airbnb’s IPO.

The potential payout would be based on whether Airbnb’s share price hits the designated thresholds as well as the actual share price on the date an earned award settles.  

Next, Europe’s largest tour operator TUI announced in February it would be offering sustainability-linked bonds . Travel Experiences Reporter Jesse Chase-Lubitz delves into whether those bonds are a step toward more sustainable tourism or a form of greenwashing.  

TUI’s sustainability-linked bonds are tied to an overall environmental target – if it misses the target, it pays a higher interest rate. The Germany-based tour operator has linked its bonds to its airline division, which is responsible for 70% of the company’s total greenhouse gas emissions. 

However, Chase-Lubitz notes some climate finance experts aren’t sold on the new instruments: They don’t have a long track record and there’s no standard for measuring progress.  An executive at a global investment bank described sustainability-linked bonds as the Wild West. 

Finally, Google is releasing new features that aim to promote greener ways of travel , writes Travel Technology Reporter Justin Dawes.

Dawes reports the new features will appear in its Maps, Search, Flights and Hotels products, adding some of those features are powered by generative artificial intelligence. Google Maps will also include features to help electric vehicle drivers locate charging stations. Dawes also notes Google’s Travel Impact Model is free to other tech companies that want to embed carbon emissions info into their websites or apps.

America still has the world's busiest airport

• New data on the world's busiest airports in 2023 reveals the latest trends in global travel. 
• 8.5 billion passengers traveled by plane last year, almost marking a return to pre-pandemic levels.   
• Airports in Asia and the Middle East became busier, but the US has once again clinched the top spot. 

International travel is almost back to pre-pandemic levels, according to the just-released list of the world's busiest airports in 2023.

8.5 billion passengers traveled globally by plane last year — up from 7 billion passengers in 2022 .

The rise in air travel marks a recovery to 93.8% of levels in 2019 before the world shut down, according to preliminary data published by the Airports Council International (ACI), a trade association that includes 2,600 airports worldwide.

Increasing travel to airports in Asia and the Middle East was one of the key trends to emerge from the data, with Dubai International Airport jumping from the fifth to the second busiest airport in the world.

Airports in India, Japan, and Turkey also made it into the top 10 and were some of the biggest movers in terms of annual gains in passenger numbers.

As the world's largest domestic market for flights , US airports still make up five of the busiest airports in the world, with Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport retaining its No. 1 position.

Despite tough global economic conditions, there was "a growing inclination towards travel," Luis Felipe de Oliveira, the ACI's world director general, said in a press release.

"Airports continue to demonstrate their resilience and adaptability amidst the challenges posed by the ever-evolving landscape of global travel," said Oliveira.

Here's a closer look at the top 10 busiest airports in the world.

10. Indira Gandhi International Airport, Delhi, India

Passengers: 72.2 million

2022 ranking: 9th

Delhi's main airport, Indira Gandhi International Airport, saw a 21.4% increase in year-on-year traffic. While it has dropped a place this year, Delhi has grown significantly as a transport hub since 2019, when it sat at number 19 in the rankings.

9. Chicago O’Hare International Airport, USA

Passengers: 73.9 million

2022 ranking: 4th

Travel through Chicago O'Hare jumped by 8.1% throughout 2023. O'Hare is a hub airport for domestic travel, particularly for United and American Airlines flights. It is also a focus city for low-cost rivals Spirit Airlines and Frontier Airlines.

8. Los Angeles International Airport, USA

Passengers: 75.1 million

2022 ranking: 6th

Travel through LAX was up 13.8% in 2023, however, compared to pre-pandemic levels in 2019, passengers at the West Coast airport decreased by 14.8% — the largest decrease of any airport in the top ten rankings. LAX is a hub for a number of carriers, including Alaska Airlines, United, American, and Delta. But domestic travel at the airport shrunk dramatically as airlines cut the number of flights following a series of meltdowns in 2022.

7. Istanbul Airport, Turkey

Passengers: 76 million

2022 ranking: 7th

Passenger numbers at Turkey's Istanbul airport have increased by 18.3%, making it the only transit hub to keep level with its previous ranking in the top 10. Notably, traffic through the airport has jumped by 45.7% since 2019.

6. Denver International Airport, USA

Passengers: 77.8 million

2022 ranking: 3rd

Denver Airport has dropped down several places on the list but still shows strong signs of growth in terms of passengers. In the last year traffic through the Colorado airport was up 12.3%, and it has also grown 12.8% from pre-pandemic levels.

5. Tokyo Haneda International Airport, Japan

Passengers: 78.7 million

2022 ranking: 16th

Japan's Tokyo Haneda Airport saw the largest increase in traffic by far, with passenger numbers surging by 55.1%. Some of that jump can be explained by a lag in tourism as Japan only reopened its borders in late 2022. Despite the jump, Tokyo Haneda is still 7.9% under its 2019 level of traffic. This January the airport made headlines after a fatal collision involving a Japan Airlines plane and a coastguard vehicle killed five people.

4. London Heathrow, UK

Passengers: 79.2 million

2022 ranking: 8th

Travel through the UK's largest airport shot up by 218% in 2022 and has once again made strong gains throughout 2023, jumping by a slightly more modest 28.5%. The airport has credited travel from the Asia-Pacific region as a major factor in its increased passenger numbers. It hopes to supersede its pre-pandemic level of traffic in 2024 and hit a record 81.4 million passengers, the airport said in a report published in December.

3. Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport, USA

Passengers: 81.8 million

2022 ranking: 2nd

Dallas/Fort Worth airport , known as DFW, is American Airlines' busiest hub and the departure city for many of the airline's international flights. Last year traffic through the airport jumped by 11.4%.

2. Dubai International Airport, UAE

Passengers: 87 million

2022 ranking: 5th

Dubai took the number 2 ranking in the list for the first time, thanks to a significant 31.7% increase in passenger numbers. Dubai's new position reflects the heavy investment that has gone into the aviation industry and boosting tourism in the region.

Passengers: 104.7 million

2022 ranking: 1st

Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport comes in at No. 1 as the busiest airport in the world, a position it has held for more than two decades. In 2023, the Atlanta airport saw an 11.7% increase in passenger numbers.
