Paramount has debuted the first trailer for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds , the latest Star Trek series that’s centered on the USS Enterprise (the first time that a show has returned full-time to the iconic ship since Star Trek: Enterprise ended in 2005.

Strange New Worlds is technically both a spinoff and a prequel, picking up with the crew of the USS Enterprise after their appearance in Star Trek: Discovery ’s second season, making it also a prequel to Star Trek: The Original Series (given that the show is set about a decade before Kirk takes over as captain).

As such, the crew of the Enterprise is a mix of familiar and new names for fans. The ship is helmed by Captain Pike (Anson Mount), with Rebecca Romijn as Una Chin-Riley, his first officer. Ethan Peck’s Spock is there, but as science officer, as is a Nyota Uhura, who’s still a cadet at this point (played by Celia Rose Gooding).

A more old-fashioned kind of Star Trek show

The trailer seems more set on establishing the overall vibe of the show, which seems pitched at trying to recapture the more episodic, exploratory style of earlier Trek series (as opposed to the more serialized nature of recent shows like Discovery or Picard ). The nostalgia factor runs strong throughout, too, with a voiceover waxing rhapsodic about the wonder of space travel and the stirring sounds of the original Star Trek theme playing in the background.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is just one of many pieces of Paramount’s resurgent Star Trek franchise on its Paramount Plus streaming service, alongside Star Trek: Discovery, Star Trek: Picard, Star Trek: Lower Decks, and Star Trek: Prodigy .

The new Trek spinoff beams in May 5 on Paramount Plus.

The first teaser trailer for the next live-action "Star Trek" spinoff, "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds," has beamed in from Paramount Plus and it looks to be a cowboy adventure to the stars. 

" Star Trek: Strange New Worlds " stars Anson Mount as Captain Christopher Pike, the first captain of Trek's iconic USS Enterprise starship (before Kirk was even out of Starfleet Academy) and will warp on the Paramount Plus streaming service on May 5.  The new series will focus on Pike's days in command of the Enterprise and include Rebecca Romijn star as Number One, the ship's first officer, and Ethan Peck as Science Officer Spock.

Based on the teaser , "Strange New Worlds" is bringing some cowboy action to the Star Trek franchise. It opens with Pike on horseback, galloping across a snow-covered ranch dotted with windmills as a shuttlecraft arrives. 

"Chris, I need you back, Captain," a voice says, hinting that Pike's been retired (his bushy, gray beard is a big clue) but apparently there's a Federation problem only he can solve. 

We then see a series of flashes of tantalizing alien planets — including some of the "strange new worlds" Trek is known for — as we hear Romijn's voice read out: "No matter how many stars there are in the sky; no matter how many galaxies swirl beyond our own; no matter what the mathematical probabilities, or the number times we say we are not alone in the universe; our first visit from the stars is always the province of children's stories and science fiction — until one day, it isn't."

The trailer closes with quick looks at the Enterprise crew in action. They beam down to a planet in spacesuits and walk around, then view shifts to a lush planet where a crowd has gathered and see a paper cutout of the Enterprise transition into the starship itself. The final view is of Pike himself as he gazes into space out a viewport.

"Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" is the third new live-action spinoff to join Paramount Plus's Trek TV revival, which began with "Discovery" (now in its fourth season). It follows "Star Trek: Picard" (which just returned for season 2) and also two new animated shows: "Star Trek: Lower Decks," a comedy for adults, and " Star Trek: Prodigy," a series for kids produced with Nickelodeon. 

"Strange New Worlds" will bring some new characters into the mix alongside old favorites, who've been recast. Celia Rose Gooding will portray a young Cadet Nyota Uhura (the character originated by Nichelle Nichols on Trek's Original Series in 1966), while Jess Bush will portray a new version of Nurse Christine Chapel (who was portrayed by Majel Barrett) and Babs Olusanmokun) as Dr. M'Benga. 

We'll also meet Hemmer, an Andorian (Bruce Horak); Lt. Erica Ortegas (Melissa Navias); and La'An Noonien Singh (Christina Chong), who sounds like a relative of the fan-favorite Trek villain Khan Noonien Singh from the Original Series  and "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan."

"Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" will beam to TV screens, exclusively on Paramount Plus , starting on May 5.

Paramount+ released a new teaser trailer for the upcoming original series Star Trek: Strange New Worlds ahead of its May 5 premiere. Watch it above.

New episodes will be released on Thursdays.

“Our first visit from the stars is always the province of children’s stories and science fiction,” a voiceover in the teaser says. “Until one day, it isn’t.”

Strange New Worlds follows Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount), Science Officer Spock (Ethan Peck), and Number One (Rebecca Romijn/Una Chin-Riley) as they explore new worlds around the galaxy. Their adventures predate Captain Kirk’s ever stepping foot aboard the U.S.S. Enterprise.

The series premiere was written by Akiva Goldsman with the story by Goldsman, Alex Kurtzman, and Jenny Lumet. Goldsman and Henry Alonso Myers serve as co-showrunners, with Goldsman directing the premiere episode. Goldsman,

Kurtzman and Lumet serve as executive producers in addition to Alonso Myers, Heather Kadin, Frank Siracusa, John Weber, Rod Roddenberry, Trevor Roth, and Aaron Baiers. The series is produced by CBS Studios, Secret Hideout, and Roddenberry Entertainment.

The first teaser trailer for the back-to-basics Star Trek series Strange New Worlds has landed.

Below is a first look at the new drama from Paramount+, which seeks to recapture the pioneering spirit of The Original Series.

Strange New Worlds follows Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) as he leads the U.S.S. Enterprise in the years before Captain Kirk. The show is billed as a return to the classic planet-of-the-week space exploration format of the 1960s Star Trek . It also stars Rebecca Romijn as Number One and Ethan Peck as Science Officer Spock.

The series is a spinoff of Star Trek: Discovery , which introduced these new iterations of Pike, Number One and Spock during its second season.

Previously, co-showrunner Akiva Goldsman confirmed that one of the show’s new castmembers has a link to the show’s most iconic villain, the infamous Khan Noonien-Singh. Actress Christina Chong was announced as playing a series regular named La’an Noonien-Singh in the show. Goldsman hinted that Khan might eventually appear on the show, but not in its debut season. Henry Alonso Myers also serves as a co-showrunner of the CBS Studios series.

With Season 2's finale leaving fans wanting more, it's only natural to be itching for Season 3 to come as soon as possible. While episodes are expected to return in 2024, the production window is from December 2023 to June 2024 for Season 3 , so we may have to wait a bit before we get the answers we're craving .

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds follows Captain Christopher Pike (played by Anson Mount) and the crew of the starship USS Enterprise (NCC-1701) in the 23rd century as they explore new worlds throughout the galaxy in the decade before Star Trek: The Original Series.

While Strange New Worlds premiered its first two episodes on CBS in 2022, all episodes are now streaming on Paramount+. It can be assumed that the third season of the show will also premiere on the CBS-affiliated streaming service. Subscriptions to Paramount+ are available in two tiers: Paramount+ Essential (with commercials, $5.99/month) and Paramount+ with SHOWTIME (commercial-free, $11.99/month).

Because production on the third season has yet to begin, there won't be a trailer out for some time.

Leading the charge is fan-favorite Captain Pike , played by Anson Mount. Mount is no stranger to the Star Trek world, as he also appeared in Star Trek: Discovery in 2019. His other credits include films like Dr. Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and the Britney Spears -led 2002 drama Crossroads . Ethan Peck 's Spock is another character who appeared in Discovery alongside Mount. Peck also worked on shows like Madam Secretary and 10 Things I Hate About You . The astute La'an is played by Christina Chong , whose credits include Johnny English Reborn and Tom and Jerry .

Erica Ortegas is played by Melissa Navia , whose guest roles include Bull , Homeland , and Billions . Rebecca Romjin plays Una-Chin Riley, Pike's Number One. While Romjin is known for films like X-Men and Austin Powers , perhaps her most unforgettable role was as Cheryl, the gorgeous girl with the disgusting apartment in Season 4 of Friends . Rounding out Pike's crew are Babs Olusanmokun ( Dune ) as Dr. M'Benga, Celia Rose Gooding ( Foul Play ) as Nyota Uhura, and Jess Bush ( Playing For Keeps ) as Nurse Christine Chapel. Arguably, one of the best parts of the Season 2 finale was the appearance of Lieutenant Montgomery Scott ( Martin Quinn ), of the infamous - and incorrect - quote from the OG series: "Beam me up, Scotty!"

Strange New Worlds is produced by CBS Studios , Secret Hideout, and Roddenberry Entertainment, and distributed by Paramount+. The show was created by Akiva Goldsman , Alex Kurtzman , and Jenny Lumet , with Goldsman and Henry Alonso Myers serving as co-showrunners . Kurtzman, Goldsman, Lumet, and Myers are executive producers on the series, alongside Aaron Baiers, Heather Kadin , Frank Siracusa , John Weber , Rod Roddenberry , and Trevor Roth .

With many unanswered questions in the Season 2 finale, there are lots of possibilities for where Season 3 could take Captain Pike and his crew. After the fun and games of the previous musical episode , things switched back to danger mode very quickly, and viewers were ultimately left with a cliffhanger. With the re-appearance of the Gorn (the reptilian-humanoid extraterrestrials first seen in Star Trek in the 1960s), Pike was faced with a decision: heed the commands of the Enterprise not to engage with the Gorn, or do whatever he can to save his people. Pike, being the always-optimistic hero that he is, decides he must try and save his crew. And, when he sees young Gorn working together, his hunch that the species may be able to communicate leads him to want to try and save his crew without violence. While it's unclear how big a role the Gorn will play in Season 3, perhaps Pike's interest in their ability to communicate will be an important factor in not having this happen again. To add (gross) insult to injury, it is revealed that Gorn eggs have been planted in Pike's love interest, Captain Batel, and she may have to sacrifice herself in order to save everyone else. This is also not resolved in the finale, adding another layer to what Season 3 might bring. Will she survive? And if so, what happens to the Gorn eggs? Additionally, diehard Star Trek fans were no doubt thrilled to see Montgomery Scott appear in the Season 2 finale. While the character first appeared in the 1960s, as portrayed by James Doohan , this is his first time on Strange New Worlds. The re-introduction of this iconic character leaves a lot of potential for Season 3.

The Mandalorian (2019-)

Disney+'s runaway hit The Mandalorian has taken the world - and the internet - by storm. Premiering in 2019, show creator and showrunner Jon Favreau ( Chef ) has confirmed that Season 4 has already been written. The series follows a Mandalorian bounty hunter, played by Pedro Pascal ( The Last of Us ), as he travels through the galaxy after the fall of the Galactic Empire. Oh, and let's not forget about his companion, the now-iconic Grogu AKA Baby Yoda . WATCH ON DISNEY+

Battlestar Galactica (2004-2009)

In the spirit of revisiting classic sci-fi television, for an updated version of the original Battlestar Galactica , try 2004's refreshed version. While not entirely a remake, it offers a more modern view of the cult classic, which originally ran from 1978-1979. Starring Edward James Olmos ( Stand and Deliver ), Mary McDonnell ( Donnie Darko ), Jamie Bamber ( Law and Order: UK ), and, who can forget, Katee Sackhoff 's iconic Kara "Starbuck" Thrace, the show is sure to hit that same, familiar space exploration note.

Lost In Space (2018-2021)

For another modernized take on a classic, try the remake of Lost in Space , based on the original that ran from 1965-1968. The Robinsons are a family who wanted to start over on a space colony (very relatable), but they end up on an uncharted alien planet instead and must struggle for survival. The remake stars Toby Stephens ( Die Another Day ) and Molly Parker ( The Wicker Man ) as Mr. and Mrs. Robinson and ran for three seasons on Netflix.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Teases A Muppets Episode, And We Hope They're Not Joking

"Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" might be considered the most lighthearted show in the vast canon of "Trek." It's a series that returned to an episodic structure, allowing its stories to conclude at the end of an hour, rather than stretching them across an entire season — and sometimes well past their breaking point. The old-world structure has allowed the showrunners to experiment with genre in ways not previously tried on "Star Trek." One episode may be a body-swap comedy, while the next is a terse horror tale. There are a few steely, soul-crushing wartime dramas sprinkled throughout, but their headiness is leavened by lightweight time-travel stories, party-animated crossovers, and an episode in which Spock becomes a human and eats too much bacon . The most notorious "Strange New Worlds" episode is likely "Subspace Rhapsody," a full-on musical . 

Trekkies who prefer more professional, mature characters may bristle a little at the constant levity of "Strange New Worlds," but the writing is slick enough on the show to offset any legitimate concerns. The characters are strong, the nostalgia is wielded correctly ("Strange New Worlds" features mostly legacy characters), and the plots are classically "Trek," no matter the genre. 

In a profile on the current state of "Star Trek" printed in Variety , the current regime of showrunners said that they're not done experimenting. "Strange New Worlds" is currently between its second and third seasons, and ideas are being floated for what might lie ahead. Director Jonathan Frakes noted that he's working on a murder mystery episode. And, although it was only a joke, executive producer Akiva Goldsman floated the idea of a Muppet episode. "As long as we're in storytelling that is cogent and sure handed, I'm not sure there is," Goldsman said with an impish smile. "Could it do Muppets? Sure. Could it do black and white, silent, slapstick? Maybe!"

Given the tone of "Strange New Worlds," there's no reason this couldn't happen.

Pigs in spaaaaaace!

I'm sure Goldsman meant felt puppet characters on "Star Trek," and not literally the Disney-owned Muppet characters. My deepest apologies to those who wanted to see Captain Pike (Anson Mount) converse with Kermit the Frog, or Spock (Ethan Peck) butting heads with Sam the Eagle. Plus, the Muppets already had their own sci-fi segment via their "Pigs in Space" shorts that date back to the original "Muppet Show." The ship on "Pigs in Space" was called the Swine Trek, so the two franchises are already somewhat chummy. 

There was also precedent for a Muppet episode of a mainstream sci-fi/fantasy show in an "Angel" episode called "Smile Time" from 2004. In that episode, the titular vampire (David Boreanaz) is transformed into a living Muppet-like puppet creature by an eerie magical egg. As a puppet, Angel and his compatriots must do battle with the makers of a demonic children's show. Don't worry: Puppet Angel returns to normal after a few days. "Angel" is a show about vampires and spells, so turning a character into a puppet is more narratively organic than whatever situation might arise for it to potentially happen on a science-based program like "Star Trek." 

But then, if "Star Trek" can orchestrate technobabble to explain a musical episode, a puppet episode wouldn't be too far behind. The tone of "Strange New Worlds" matches the whimsical lightness of "Angel" anyway, so the showrunners have every excuse to make good on Goldsman's little joke. 

And, yes, Trekkies would love to see a silent episode. But a quick reminder: "Star Trek: Voyager" already did a few black and white episodes.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds songwriters Kay Hanley and Tom Polce reveal they were instructed to make people cry watching Star Trek 's first-ever musical episode, "Subspace Rhapsody." Hanley and Polce, from the band Letters to Cleo, wrote and composed all of the songs for "Subspace Rhapsody" in just five weeks. It was a rewarding but emotional experience that led Hanley to cry for the first time ever while writing a song .

At WonderCon, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds ' musical episode was screened in a singalong event, followed by a panel with Kay Hanley and Tom Polce moderated by Scott Mantz. Hanley revealed she had never cried writing a song before "Keep Us Connected," which was sung by Ensign Nyota Uhura (Celia Rose Gooding), and Tom Polce says writers Bill Wolkoff, Dana Horgan, and Strange New Worlds ' showrunners encouraged the songs to be emotional . Kay Hanley: I’ve been writing songs, we both have, for 30 years, and I’ve never cried while writing a song until “Keep Us Connected.”

Tom Polce: One of the great directives they gave us - from the very beginning of this when we were trying to figure out ‘what is this about? What are these songs going to be about?’, it was clear to all of us that this wasn’t going to be an hour of jazz hands set to superfluous music. What was important was that lyrically, it was a narrative, and it was an exposition of these characters emotionally. And when they said to us, I swear, it was like, ‘We want people to cry’... Star Trek: Strange New Worlds ' musical worked wonders not just because it was wildly entertaining, but there was genuine depth and heartfelt emotion behind the characters' songs. While the threat of the subspace rift affecting the entire galaxy satisfied Star Trek' s sci-fi requirements, the crux of the episode was the crew of the Starship Enterprise laying their innermost feelings bare. Characters like Uhura, Nurse Christine Chapel (Jess Bush), Lt. La'an Noonien-Singh (Christina Chong), and Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) sang out loud their hopes and deepest fears since Strange New Worlds began.

"Keep Us Connected" gave Uhura the fortitude to save the Enterprise.

Nurse Chapel came to a fateful decision to put herself first in "I'm Ready," breaking the heart of Lt. Spock (Ethan Peck) in the process. La'an's heartwrenching performance of "How Would That Feel?" gave her the strength to open herself up to others, especially Lt. James T. Kirk (Paul Wesley). And the powerhouse "Keep Us Connected" made Ensign Uhura face the loss of her family and Lt. Hemmer (Bruce Horak), but affirmed Uhura's true purpose as the heart of the Starship Enterprise. "Keep Us Connected" gave Uhura the fortitude to save the Enterprise in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds while bringing Kay Hanley and audiences to tears.

We already knew that the second season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds would feature a crossover episode with Star Trek: Lower Decks . Paramount just dropped the full trailer for S2, giving us our first glimpse of Tawny Newsome and Jack Quaid playing the live-action counterparts to their animated Lower Decks characters Beckett Mariner and Brad Boimler. They definitely nailed their respective looks. And yes, part of the crossover episode will be animated in a similar style just to keep things fun.

(Some spoilers below, notably for S1.)

As reported previously , the series features classic The Original Series characters Capt. Christopher Pike (Anson Mount), Number One (Rebecca Romijn), and Spock (Ethan Peck). Babs Olusanmokun plays Dr. M'Benga; Celia Rose Gooding plays Cadet Nyota Uhura; Jess Bush plays Nurse Christine Chapel; Melissa Navia plays Lt. Erica Ortegas; and Christina Chong plays La'An Noonien-Singh (a relation of the classic revenge-obsessed Star Trek villain Khan).

Alas, we bid farewell in the penultimate S1 episode to Chief Engineer Hemmer (Bruce Horak), an Aenar, aka an albino subspecies of Andorians that are generally depicted as blind. When an infection of Gorn eggs hit the ship, Hemmer helped fight the spread, only to become infected. When he sacrificed himself, perishing along with the Gorn eggs he carried inside, there wasn't a dry eye in millions of homes around the world. And the S1 finale gave us a bona fide cliffhanger when Number One was arrested for being a genetically modified Illyrian. So the Enterprise is getting a new chief engineer for S2: Pelia, played by the legendary Carol Kane.

There was a short teaser for S2 last month, but it didn't tell us much about any plot details. Mostly the teaser emphasized the diversity and camaraderie of the crew as they embark on new adventures and face fresh challenges, both personal and professional. This full trailer gives us more of the same. Even the brief official synopsis is maddeningly vague: "Captain Pike (Anson Mount), Number One (Rebecca Romijn), Spock (Ethan Peck) and the rest of the Enterprise crew are back exploring strange new worlds and boldly going where no one has gone before." That's probably due to this show's (welcome) episodic nature, a return to classic Star Trek standalone stories each week.

The trailer opens with Ortegas attempting a daring shuttle descent to a planet's surface as Captain Pike looks a bit queasy. "Don't worry, I did this a hundred times during the war. It's like riding a bike," she assures him—and she pulls it off because this is Ortegas we're talking about. There are aliens and explosions and at least one shot of each main cast member in action, plus the occasional bit of poignant philosophizing. "Our job puts us up against death," Kirk tells Singh. "We might not like it but we do have to face it."

And yes, that is Spock locking lips with Nurse Chapel in a passionate embrace, finally giving in to the sparks that flew between them in S1. It looks like Spock may also bond a little with Boimler, giving the latter his best Vulcan "live-long-and-prosper" salute as Boimler is about to be transported. Boimler naturally fumbles his response.

The Future of ‘Star Trek’: From ‘Starfleet Academy’ to New Movies and Michelle Yeoh, How the 58-Year-Old Franchise Is Planning for the Next Generation of Fans

“I can’t believe I get to play the captain of the Enterprise.”

“Strange New Worlds” is the 12th “Star Trek” TV show since the original series debuted on NBC in 1966, introducing Gene Roddenberry’s vision of a hopeful future for humanity. In the 58 years since, the “Star Trek” galaxy has logged 900 television episodes and 13 feature films, amounting to 668 hours — nearly 28 days — of content to date. Even compared with “Star Wars” and the Marvel Cinematic Universe, “Star Trek” stands as the only storytelling venture to deliver a single narrative experience for this long across TV and film.

In other words, “Star Trek” is not just a franchise. As Alex Kurtzman , who oversees all “Star Trek” TV production, puts it, “‘Star Trek’ is an institution.”

Without a steady infusion of new blood, though, institutions have a way of fading into oblivion (see soap operas, MySpace, Blockbuster Video). To keep “Star Trek” thriving has meant charting a precarious course to satisfy the fans who have fueled it for decades while also discovering innovative ways to get new audiences on board.

“Doing ‘Star Trek’ means that you have to deliver something that’s entirely familiar and entirely fresh at the same time,” Kurtzman says.

The franchise has certainly weathered its share of fallow periods, most recently after “Nemesis” bombed in theaters in 2002 and UPN canceled “Enterprise” in 2005. It took 12 years for “Star Trek” to return to television with the premiere of “Discovery” in 2017; since then, however, there has been more “Star Trek” on TV than ever: The adventure series “Strange New Worlds,” the animated comedy “Lower Decks” and the kids series “Prodigy” are all in various stages of production, and the serialized thriller “Picard” concluded last year, when it ranked, along with “Strange New Worlds,” among Nielsen’s 10 most-watched streaming original series for multiple weeks. Nearly one in five Paramount+ subscribers in the U.S. is watching at least one “Star Trek” series, according to the company, and more than 50% of fans watching one of the new “Trek” shows also watch at least two others. The new shows air in 200 international markets and are dubbed into 35 languages. As “Discovery” launches its fifth and final season in April, “Star Trek” is in many ways stronger than it’s ever been.

“’Star Trek’s fans have kept it alive more times than seems possible,” says Eugene Roddenberry, Jr., who executive produces the TV series through Roddenberry Entertainment. “While many shows rightfully thank their fans for supporting them, we literally wouldn’t be here without them.”

But the depth of fan devotion to “Star Trek” also belies a curious paradox about its enduring success: “It’s not the largest fan base,” says Akiva Goldsman, “Strange New Worlds” executive producer and co-showrunner. “It’s not ‘Star Wars.’ It’s certainly not Marvel.”

When J.J. Abrams rebooted “Star Trek” in 2009 — with Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto and Zoe Saldaña playing Kirk, Spock and Uhura — the movie grossed more than any previous “Star Trek” film by a comfortable margin. But neither that film nor its two sequels broke $500 million in global grosses, a hurdle every other top-tier franchise can clear without breaking a sweat.

There’s also the fact that “Star Trek” fans are aging. I ask “The Next Generation” star Jonathan Frakes, who’s acted in or directed more versions of “Star Trek” than any other person alive, how often he meets fans for whom the new “Star Trek” shows are their first. “Of the fans who come to talk to me, I would say very, very few,” he says. “‘Star Trek’ fans, as we know, are very, very, very loyal — and not very young.”

As Stapf puts it: “There’s a tried and true ‘Trek’ fan that is probably going to come to every ‘Star Trek,’ no matter what it is — and we want to expand the universe.”

Every single person I spoke to for this story talked about “Star Trek” with a joyful earnestness as rare in the industry as (nerd alert) a Klingon pacifist.

“When I’m meeting fans, sometimes they’re coming to be confirmed, like I’m kind of a priest,” Ethan Peck says during a break in filming on the “Strange New Worlds” set. He’s in full Spock regalia — pointy ears, severe eyebrows, bowl haircut — and when asked about his earliest memories of “Star Trek,” he stares off into space in what looks like Vulcan contemplation. “I remember being on the playground in second or third grade and doing the Vulcan salute, not really knowing where it came from,” he says. “When I thought of ‘Star Trek,’ I thought of Spock. And now I’m him. It’s crazy.”

To love “Star Trek” is to love abstruse science and cowboy diplomacy, complex moral dilemmas and questions about the meaning of existence. “It’s ultimately a show with the most amazing vision of optimism, I think, ever put on-screen in science fiction,” says Kurtzman, who is 50. “All you need is two minutes on the news to feel hopeless now. ‘Star Trek’ is honestly the best balm you could ever hope for.”

I’m getting a tour of the USS Enterprise from Scotty — or, rather, “Strange New World” production designer Jonathan Lee, who is gushing in his native Scottish burr as we step into the starship’s transporter room. “I got such a buzzer from doing this, I can’t tell you,” he says. “I actually designed four versions of it.”

Lee is especially proud of the walkway he created to run behind the transporter pads — an innovation that allows the production to shoot the characters from a brand-new set of angles as they beam up from a far-flung planet. It’s one of the countless ways that this show has been engineered to be as cinematic as possible, part of Kurtzman’s overall vision to make “Star Trek” on TV feel like “a movie every week.”

Kurtzman’s tenure with “Star Trek” began with co-writing the screenplay for Abrams’ 2009 movie, which was suffused with a fast-paced visual style that was new to the franchise. When CBS Studios approached Kurtzman in the mid-2010s about bringing “Star Trek” back to TV, he knew instinctively that it needed to be just as exciting as that film.

“The scope was so much different than anything we had ever done on ‘Next Gen,’” says Frakes, who’s helmed two feature films with the “Next Generation” cast and directed episodes of almost every live-action “Trek” TV series, including “Discovery” and “Strange New Worlds.” “Every department has the resources to create.”

A new science lab set for Season 3, for example, boasts a transparent floor atop a four-foot pool of water that swirls underneath the central workbench, and the surrounding walls sport a half dozen viewscreens with live schematics custom designed by a six-person team. “I like being able to paint on a really big canvas,” Kurtzman says. “The biggest challenge is always making sure that no matter how big something gets, you’re never losing focus on that tiny little emotional story.”

At this point, is there a genre that “Strange New Worlds” can’t do? “As long as we’re in storytelling that is cogent and sure handed, I’m not sure there is,” Goldsman says with an impish smile. “Could it do Muppets? Sure. Could it do black and white, silent, slapstick? Maybe!”

This approach is also meant to appeal to people who might want to watch “Star Trek” but regard those 668 hours of backstory as an insurmountable burden. “You shouldn’t have to watch a ‘previously on’ to follow our show,” Myers says.

To achieve so many hairpin shifts in tone and setting while maintaining Kurtzman’s cinematic mandate, “Strange New Worlds” has embraced one of the newest innovations in visual effects: virtual production. First popularized on the “Star Wars” series “The Mandalorian,” the technology — called the AR wall — involves a towering circular partition of LED screens projecting a highly detailed, computer-generated backdrop. Rather than act against a greenscreen, the actors can see whatever fantastical surroundings their characters are inhabiting, lending a richer level of verisimilitude to the show.

But there is a catch. While the technology is calibrated to maintain a proper sense of three-dimensional perspective through the camera lens, it can be a bit dizzying for anyone standing on the set. “The images on the walls start to move in a way that makes no sense,” says Mount. “You end up having to focus on something that’s right in front of you so you don’t fall down.”

And yet, even as he’s talking about it, Mount can’t help but break into a boyish grin. “Sometimes we call it the holodeck,” he says. In fact, the pathway to the AR wall on the set is dotted with posters of the virtual reality room from “The Next Generation” and the words “Enter Holodeck” in a classic “Trek” font.

“I want to take one of those home with me,” Peck says. Does the AR wall also affect him? “I don’t really get disoriented by it. Spock would not get ill, so I’m Method acting.”

I’m on the set of the “Star Trek” TV movie “Section 31,” seated in an opulent nightclub with a view of a brilliant, swirling nebula, watching Yeoh rehearse with director Olatunde Osunsanmi and her castmates. Originally, the project was announced as a TV series centered on Philippa Georgiou, the semi-reformed tyrant Yeoh originated on “Discovery.” But between COVID delays and the phenomenon of “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” there wasn’t room in the veteran actress’s schedule to fit a season of television. Yeoh was undaunted.

“We’d never let go of her,” she says of her character. “I was just blown away by all the different things I could do with her. Honestly, it was like, ‘Let’s just get it done, because I believe in this.’”

If that means nothing to you, don’t worry: The enormity of the revelation that Garrett is being brought back is meant only for fans. If you don’t know who the character is, you’re not missing anything.

“It was always my goal to deliver an entertaining experience that is true to the universe but appeals to newcomers,” says screenwriter Craig Sweeny. “I wanted a low barrier of entry so that anybody could enjoy it.”

Nevertheless, including Garrett on the show is exactly the kind of gasp-worthy detail meant to flood “Star Trek” fans with geeky good feeling.

“You cannot create new fans to the exclusion of old fans,” Kurtzman says. “You must serve your primary fan base first and you must keep them happy. That is one of the most important steps to building new fans.”

On its face, that maxim would make “Section 31” a genuine risk. The titular black-ops organization has been controversial with “Star Trek” fans since it was introduced in the 1990s. “The concept is almost antagonistic to some of the values of ‘Star Trek,’” Sweeny says. But he still saw “Section 31” as an opportunity to broaden what a “Star Trek” project could be while embracing the radical inclusivity at the heart of the franchise’s appeal.

“Famously, there’s a spot for everybody in Roddenberry’s utopia, so I was like, ‘Well, who would be the people who don’t quite fit in?’” he says. “I didn’t want to make the John le Carré version, where you’re in the headquarters and it’s backbiting and shades of gray. I wanted to do the people who were at the edges, out in the field. These are not people who necessarily work together the way you would see on a ‘Star Trek’ bridge.”

For Osunsanmi, who grew up watching “The Next Generation” with his father, it boils down to a simple question: “Is it putting good into the world?” he asks. “Are these characters ultimately putting good into the world? And, taking a step back, are we putting good into the world? Are we inspiring humans watching this to be good? That’s for me what I’ve always admired about ‘Star Trek.’”

Should “Section 31” prove successful, Yeoh says she’s game for a sequel. And Kurtzman is already eyeing more opportunities for TV movies, including a possible follow-up to “Picard.” The franchise’s gung-ho sojourn into streaming movies, however, stands in awkward contrast to the persistent difficulty Paramount Pictures and Abrams’ production company Bad Robot have had making a feature film following 2016’s “Star Trek Beyond” — the longest theaters have gone without a “Star Trek” movie since Paramount started making them.

First, a movie reuniting Pine’s Capt. Kirk with his late father — played in the 2009 “Star Trek” by Chris Hemsworth — fell apart in 2018. Around the same time, Quentin Tarantino publicly flirted with, then walked away from, directing a “Star Trek” movie with a 1930s gangster backdrop. Noah Hawley was well into preproduction on a “Star Trek” movie with a brand-new cast, until then-studio chief Emma Watts abruptly shelved it in 2020. And four months after Abrams announced at Paramount’s 2022 shareholders meeting that his 2009 cast would return for a movie directed by Matt Shakman (“WandaVision”), Shakman left the project to make “The Fantastic Four” for Marvel. (It probably didn’t help that none of the cast had been approached before Abrams made his announcement.)

The studio still intends to make what it’s dubbed the “final chapter” for the Pine-Quinto-Saldaña cast, and Steve Yockey (“The Flight Attendant”) is writing a new draft of the script. Even further along is another prospective “Star Trek” film written by Seth Grahame-Smith (“Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter”) and to be directed by Toby Haynes (“Andor,” “Black Mirror: USS Callister”) that studio insiders say is on track to start preproduction by the end of the year. That project will serve as an origin story of sorts for the main timeline of the entire franchise. In both cases, the studio is said to be focused on rightsizing the budgets to fit within the clear box office ceiling for “Star Trek” feature films.

Far from complaining, everyone seems to relish the challenge. Visual effects supervisor Jason Zimmerman says that “working with Alex, the references are always at least $100 million movies, if not more, so we just kind of reverse engineer how do we do that without having to spend the same amount of money and time.”

The workload doesn’t seem to faze him either. “Visual effects people are a big, big ‘Star Trek’ fandom,” he says. “You naturally just get all these people who go a little bit above and beyond, and you can’t trade that for anything.”

In one of Kurtzman’s several production offices in Toronto, he and production designer Matthew Davies are scrutinizing a series of concept drawings for the newest “Star Trek” show, “Starfleet Academy.” A bit earlier, they showed me their plans for the series’ central academic atrium, a sprawling, two-story structure that will include a mess hall, amphitheater, trees, catwalks, multiple classrooms and a striking view of the Golden Gate Bridge in a single, contiguous space. To fit it all, they plan to use every inch of Pinewood Toronto’s 45,900 square foot soundstage, the largest in Canada.

But this is a “Star Trek” show, so there do need to be starships, and Kurtzman is discussing with Davies about how one of them should look. The issue is that “Starfleet Academy” is set in the 32nd century, an era so far into the future Kurtzman and his team need to invent much of its design language.

“For me, this design is almost too Klingon,” Kurtzman says. “I want to see the outline and instinctively, on a blink, recognize it as a Federation ship.”

The time period was first introduced on Season 3 of “Discovery,” when the lead character, Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green), transported the namesake starship and its crew there from the 23rd century. “It was exciting, because every time we would make a decision, we would say, ‘And now that’s canon,’” says Martin-Green.

“We listened to a lot of it,” Kurtzman says. “I think I’ve been able to separate the toxic fandom from really true fans who love ‘Star Trek’ and want you to hear what they have to say about what they would like to see.”

By Season 2, the “Discovery” writers pivoted from its dour, war-torn first season and sent the show on its trajectory 900-plus years into the future. “We had to be very aware of making sure that Spock was in the right place and that Burnham’s existence was explained properly, because she was never mentioned in the original series,” says executive producer and showrunner Michelle Paradise. “What was fun about jumping into the future is that it was very much fresh snow.”

That freedom affords “Starfleet Academy” far more creative latitude while also dramatically reducing how much the show’s target audience of tweens and teens needs to know about “Star Trek” before watching — which puts them on the same footing as the students depicted in the show. “These are kids who’ve never had a red alert before,” Noga Landau, executive producer and co-showrunner, says. “They never had to operate a transporter or be in a phaser fight.”

In the “Starfleet Academy” writers’ room in Secret Hideout’s Santa Monica offices, Kurtzman tells the staff — a mix of “Star Trek” die-hards, part-time fans and total newbies — that he wants to take a 30,000-foot view for a moment. “I think we need to ground in science more throughout the show,” he says, a giant framed photograph of Spock ears just over his shoulder. “The kids need to use science more to solve problems.”

Immediately, one of the writers brightens. “Are you saying we can amp up the techno-babble?” she says. “I’m just excited I get to use my computer science degree.”

After they break for lunch, Kurtzman is asked how much longer he plans to keep making “Star Trek.” 

“The minute I fall out of love with it is the minute that it’s not for me anymore. I’m not there yet,” he says. “To be able to build in this universe to tell stories that are fundamentally about optimism and a better future at a time when the world seems to be falling apart — it’s a really powerful place to live every day.”

Deadline reports Katy O’Brien ( Loves Lives Bleeding , The Mandalorian ) has joined the cast of Mission: Impossible 8 in a currently undisclosed role.

Deadline also reports Julianne Hough has joined the cast of Maggie Gyllenhaal’s Bride of Frankenstein movie—now titled “ The Bride! ” with an exclamation point. Though details on her character are currently under wraps, a new synopsis states the film “sees a lonely Frankenstein travel to 1930s Chicago to seek the aide of a Dr. Euphronius in creating a companion for himself. The two reinvigorate a murdered young woman and the Bride is born. She is beyond what either of them intended, igniting a combustible romance, the attention of the police and a wild and radical social movement.”

Primitive War

Deadline additionally reports Jeremy Piven, Tricia Helfer, Ryan Kwanten, Nick Wechsler, Anthony Ingruber, Aaron Glenane, Carlos Sanson Jr, Ana Thu Nguyen, Adolphus Waylee, Richard Brancatisano, Marcus Johnson and Jake Ryan will star in Primitive War , an adaptation of Ethan Pettus’ military sci-fi/horror novel from director Luke Sparke. The story concerns “an elite recon unit known as the Vulture Squad, who, in 1968, at the height of the Vietnam War that is sent to an isolated jungle valley to uncover the fate of a missing Green Beret platoon. They soon discover they are not alone. Dinosaurs have been let loose in the jungles.”

World Breaker

Deadline also has word Milla Jovovich, Luke Evans and Billie Boullet are attached to star in World Breaker , a sci-fi survival thriller from director Brad Anderson set in which “a tear in the fabric of reality brought creatures to our world from an alternate dimension bent on our destruction. A father hides his daughter on an island to keep her safe while he prepares her for survival and the battles to come. But when the world is about to break, no place is safe.”

According to Deadline , Screen Gems has acquired Wolf Night , a pitch package from Platinum Dunes concerning werewolves. Though details on the plot are currently under wraps, the script hails from Will Honley and April Maguire. Jonathan Liebesman ( Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles ) is attached to direct.

Bloody-Disgusting reports the Nicolas Cage monster movie, Arcadian , has been rated “R” for “bloody images.”

He went on to helm Star Trek: First Contact, Star Trek: Insurrection, and episodes of almost every subsequent live-action Star Trek TV show including Voyager, Discovery, Picard, and Strange New Worlds.

Strange New Worlds follows Captain Christopher Pike and the crew of the starship Enterprise as they embark on intergalactic adventures that take place in the 23rd century. Oscar-nominated screenwriter Akiva Goldsman and Ugly Betty writer Henry Alonso Myers serve as showrunners. The cast includes Anson Mount, Ethan Peck, Jess Bush, Christina Chong, Celia Rose Gooding, Melissa Navia, Babs Olusanmokun, and Rebecca Romijn.

The series premiered in on Paramount Plus, the home for all things Star Trek, in 2022 and became the most-watched original Star Trek series on the network. Season 2 was greenlit in January 2022 and aired in June 2023. Season 3 was announced in March of last year, but production was delayed due to the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes.

Strange New Worlds, Star Trek 4 and much more: New reveals for all things Trek

Variety just published a huge article detailing what's happening in the wide world of Star Trek , which has more shows on the air right now that at any point in the franchise's 57-year history. From Discovery to Strange New Worlds to Lower Decks to Prodigy to the recently completed Picard , Paramount is going hard on this universe, pleasing older fans and hoping to make new ones.

What does the franchise have coming up next? Let's run through the highlights:

• The upcoming third season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds , which might be the most universally praised Trek series on the air right now, is expected in 2025. They're going all out on the sets; a new science lab set has "a transparent floor atop a four-foot pool of water that swirls underneath the central workbench, and the surrounding walls sport a half dozen viewscreens with live schematics custom designed by a six-person team." Jonathan Frakes, who played Riker in Star Trek: The Next Generation and who has remained involved with the franchise ever since, is directing an episode framed as a Hollywood murder mystery. He calls it “the best episode of television I’ve ever done.”
• Paramount is also at work on a show called Starfleet Academy , set at a school for officers. This show is set in the 32nd century, far in the future of Star Trek , which is generally set somewhere around the 23rd. Variety saw plans for the larest set in the franchise's history, a "central academic atrium, a sprawling, two-story structure that will include a mess hall, amphitheater, trees, catwalks, multiple classrooms and a striking view of the Golden Gate Bridge in a single, contiguous space." Starfleet Academy starts production this summer.
• Michelle Yeoh will once agan play Philippa Georgiou, the semi-reformed tyrant she played on Star Trek: Discovery, in a TV movie about Section 31 , a black ops organization within the Star Trek universe. This was originally going to be a TV series, but with Yeoh winning an Oscar for Everything Everywhere All at Once , Yeoh's schedule filled up. Still, she still has a lot of fondness for Georgiou. “We’d never let go of her,” she said. “I was just blown away by all the different things I could do with her. Honestly, it was like, ‘Let’s just get it done, because I believe in this.’” Yeoh just wrapped on the movie, which will include an appearance from a young Rachel Garrett (Kacey Rohl), a character first introduced in Star Trek: The Next Generation . If the Section 31 film is successful, Yeoh is down for a sequel.
• On the big screen, a Star Trek movie written by Seth Grahame-Smith and director by Andor director Toby Haynes is on track to start preproduction by the end of the year. The movie will be "an origin story for the main timeline of the franchise."
• There are also plans to make Star Trek 4 , a follow up to the 2016 movie Star Trek Beyond starring Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto and Zoe Saldaña. That movie will be the "final chapter" in that series. Steve Yockey ( The Flight Attendant ) has been hired to write a new draft of the script.
• Star Trek overboss Alex Kurtzman is thinking about a possible follow-up to Star Trek: Picard , although it doesn't sound like there's anything set in stone yet.

And let's not forget that the fifth and final season of Star Trek: Discovery , the show that kicked off this new jam-packed Trek era, is coming back in just a week!

Descriptions for all 10 episodes of Star Trek: Discovery season 5

Speaking to SFX Magazine , Star Trek: Discovery showrunner Michelle Paradise shared non-spoilery descriptions of all 10 upcoming episodes of season 5, which were helpfully compiled by TrekMovie.com .

• Episode 1: “Red Directive”: “Launching the mission. The mission is a red directive. An exciting mission that launches us onto our season, and it’s super-secret.”
• Episode 2: “Under the Twin Moons”: “A lovely Burnham and Saru episode.”
• Episode 3: “Jinaal”: “Culber like you’ve never seen him before.”
• Episode 4: “Face the Strange”: “Mind bending and exciting, and a heck of a lot of fun.”
• Episode 5: “Mirrors”: “[Long pause] I’m trying to think of something that won’t be spoilery! Surprising encounters and surprising new information about our heroes.”
• Episode 6: “Whistlespeak”: “Oh, classic TOS-style adventure!”
• Episode 7: “Erigah”: “Tense and unexpected.”
• Episode 8: “Labyrinths”: “Oh, just an incredible gorgeous location, incredible scope and a singular journey for Burnham.”
• Episode 9: “Lagrange Point”: “Discovery in a location where you’ve never seen her before.”
• Episode 10: “Life, Itself”: “Part of me wants to say the end of an era. But that just sounds so sad. I don’t wanna say that! Hopefully it’s all the things that  Discovery  has always been. Action, adventure, heart, family, love, sci-fi wonderfulness, beautifully acted, beautifully directed, production values, gorgeous VFX. It’s everything we have always had in  Discovery  in one episode.”

The first two episodes on Star Trek: Discovery season 5 drop on April 4. All of this is happenign on Paramount+.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 2 Trailer Features First Look at Live-Action Mariner and Boimler

Paramount+ today debuted the official trailer for the highly anticipated second season of its critically acclaimed original series Star Trek: Strange New Worlds .

The official Season 2 key art is also now available. Season 2 will premiere Thursday, June 15 on Paramount+ in the U.S, the U.K., Australia, Latin America, Brazil, France, Italy, Germany, Switzerland and Austria. The second season will also be available to stream on Paramount+ in South Korea, with the premiere date to be announced at a later time. Following the premiere, new episodes of the 10-episode season will drop weekly on Thursdays.

Additionally, the trailer revealed a first look at the previously announced special crossover episode featuring Star Trek: Lower Decks ’ Tawny Newsome as Beckett Mariner and Jack Quaid as Brad Boimler in live-action form aboard the U.S.S. Enterprise . The episode, which will also feature animation, was directed by Star Trek: The Next Generation and Star Trek: Picard actor and director Jonathan Frakes.

In Season 2 of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds , the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise , under the command of Captain Christopher Pike , confronts increasingly dangerous stakes, explores uncharted territories and encounters new life and civilizations. The crew will also embark on personal journeys that will continue to test their resolve and redefine their destinies. Facing friends and enemies both new and familiar, their adventures will unfold in surprising ways never seen before on any Star Trek series.

The series stars Anson Mount as Christopher Pike, Rebecca Romijn as Una Chin-Riley , Ethan Peck as Spock , Jess Bush as Christine Chapel , Christina Chong as La’An Noonien-Singh, Celia Rose Gooding as Nyota Uhura , Melissa Navia as Erica Ortegas and Babs Olusanmokun as Joseph M’Benga . Season 2 also features the return of special guest star Paul Wesley as James T. Kirk and new addition Carol Kane in a recurring role as Pelia .

Season 2 of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is produced by CBS Studios, Secret Hideout and Roddenberry Entertainment. Akiva Goldsman and Henry Alonso Myers serve as co-showrunners.
