The Winter Kuari Pass Trek is a mesmerizing high-altitude adventure in the Indian state of Uttarakhand. It is renowned for its breathtaking vistas of the Garhwal Himalayas, including the Nanda Devi, Dronagiri, and Kamet peaks. This winter trek offers a unique experience for trekkers, allowing you to explore the Himalayas in their snow-covered splendour. All along the trek mountain views keep you company as you immerse yourself in the wintry charm of the Himalayas. The best thing about this trek is that its moderate grade allows both seasoned trekkers as well as fit beginners to embark on the journey.

The Winter Kuari Pass Trek is an extraordinary journey that allows you to immerse yourself in the snowy beauty of the Himalayas. It combines the natural grandeur of the mountains, cultural immersion, and the thrill of high-altitude trekking, making it a memorable and transformative experience.

The Breathtaking Views from Kuari Pass

The main attraction of the trek, of course, is standing atop Kuari Pass. From the pass, you get an unrivalled view of the Himalayan Ranges that encircle you all around. The Dronagiri Parvat is the most prominent along with Hathi and Gauri Parvat, Nanda Devi and several other Himalayan peaks.

Suitable for Beginners

While the views from Kuari Pass rival those from more challenging treks, the trail itself is relatively accessible, making it an excellent choice for novice trekkers. The well-defined path and gradual elevation gain provide an ideal introduction to high-altitude trekking.

Varied Terrains

The trek offers a diverse range of landscapes, from dense rhododendron forests to open meadows and high-altitude alpine zones. This variety keeps the trek interesting and engaging for trekkers who appreciate the changing scenery.

Sunset Views

The sunset view on this trek is unlike any other. Witness the last rays of the sun casting a golden glow over the Dronagiri Parvat making it appear as made of molten gold. It is such a surreal sight to watch and will last in your memory forever.

A Scenic Descent

As we descend through the route via Gorson Bugyal and Auli, the view of Mt. Nanda Devi becomes prominent. You get close-up views of the tallest mountain in India, which is a wonderful experience. Also, you will descend via the vast Gorson Bugyal – a snowy expanse surrounded by high mountains and the charming snow-draped town of Auli. Keep your cameras on the ready as the views are simply mesmerizing.

A host of ice peaks will greet us at Joshimath. After an early breakfast on this day, we will head off to Dhak village in the Joshimath tehsil, a rocky drive of 1:45 minutes. From here our trek will commence. Look out for the gentle slopes of the Sleeping Lady Mountain of Joshimath on this drive. The gentle ups and downs of this mountain seem to form an outline of a lying lady.

The trek flags off from Dhak along a steady ascent. The dirt trail steers away from the main road and rises towards Tugasi village. There are a couple of sharp T-turns on this trail after which the walk takes place on a level ground followed by gradually ascending soft slopes. The terrain is mostly rough here. Leaving out the terrace farming lands, there is no affluence of greenery, but offers a sweeping view of the Garhwal frontier all around. Look out especially for the bright silvery sun-dazed stream of Dhauli-Ganga snaking it way in the abyss, and the Vishnugad-Tapovan Hydroelectric Power Station. You are not likely to find any snow in this zone.

Twenty to twenty-five minutes into the trek, you will be reaching village Kharchi, where you can fill your bottles and take some rest. The trail continues from the village on the same rocky path, keeping the valley to the left. The ascent id steep and encounters a couple of switchback turns, finally reaching the Lower Tugasi area. You can find the trail forking into two here and must take the one curving along a hydro run flour mill. Approximately 10 minutes from here you will reach the Upper Tugasi region, marked with a handful of wheat fields, flower beds, and thatched roofed huts. You can also find little streams coming down in this area.

Continue on this path, maintaining a steep climb, leaving the farmland behind and you will find the awe-inspiring sight of Dronagiri peak hauntingly rising at a distance. We will be pitching tents in the open meadows overlooking Dronagiri and fringed around with oak forests.

You can ask your trek leader to take you on an acclimatization walk to Gulling Top point this afternoon to enjoy the snow laden forests in your own way. Also, brace up for a mesmerizing vista of the Dronagiri peak caught in the shimmer of morning light from this camp site the next dawn.

  • Altitude :3,350m/ 11000 ft
  • Trek: 5 km ,approx 4 hrs
  • Altitude Gain: 600m/ 2,000ft
  • Gulling Top to Forest Hut (first and last water point) (3000m/9850 ft) (1 km trek)

  • Tali top to Tali top forest camp site (gradual descent) (3,400m/ 11,100 ft) (1 km trek)
  • Oak, Rhododendron (mostly pink and white), walnut forest
  •  Accommodation in tent
  •  Peaks :- Nanda Devi, Kalanka, Chang bang, Dronagri, Hathi Parvat, Gori Parvat

Wake up in time next morning to start on a 5 hour journey deeper into the forest of Talli. After the exacting climb of last day, the trek today will be less arduous. The gradients of ascent is relatively smooth and will allow you an enjoyable hike.

Twenty minutes into the trek, you will come to a green clearing overlooking the magnificent snow peaks. After a few moments of rest, the climb must continue crossing a little stream to enter a mixed forest slowly thickening with oaks and rhododendrons. If you are coming in late March you might still find some white and pink blossoms. Except for rhododendrons, you can find walnut and some other varieties of conifers here.

At the height of winter’s splendour, you can find everything in the forest coated with a cover of snow. In the thickening snow, light, and shade of the conifer forests of Gulling, your second camp on the trek will be pitched.

Along this path, the Hathi-Ghori peaks will be manifesting gloriously along with Dronagiri now somewhat flipped to the side.

  • Altitude: 3,800m/12,500 ft
  • Trek: 15 km, approx 11 hrs
  • Tali forest camp to Khullara top (moderate ascent) (3,600m/11,800 ft) (3.5 km trek)
  •  Khullara top to broken bridge with frozen stream (traverse walk) (3,750m/ 12,300 ft) (2.5 km trek)
  •  Broken bridge to KUARI PASS (Strenuous climb) (3,900m/ 12,750 ft) (1.5 km trek)
  •  Today is the toughest day
  •  Carry enough water (no water source on the way)
  •  Early morning after breakfast start trek to Kuari pass
  •  Peaks:- Kedarnath Peak, Kedardome, Chaukhambha, Balakun, Neel Kantha, Mukut Parvat, Kamet, Abhi Gamin, Mana I, Ghori Parvat, Hathi Parvat, Dronagiri, Kalanka, Chang Bang, Nanda Devi, Nanda Ghunti

Fourth day is the summit day, likely to span 10-11 hours depending on the group’s pace. You need to gear up appropriately for high snow and squalling wind on the ridges today. There is going to be no water source found on the way today,so carry enough to sustain you through.

In the first phase, the trek will move up to the Khullara top—a moderate ascent of 3.5 km. You will need to traverse a broken bridge and a stream frozen at the heights of winter, followed by a ridge climb to the high pass, severely strenuous and made more challenging with the snow. Every 15 minutes, you are welcome to take a break and catch your breath. At Jhandi Dhar, a suitable rest point 2 hours into the trek, you can afford a long break. Lunch will be had on the way or after reaching the temple at the base of the Kuari high pass.

Make sure to crampon your shoes properly. Trek the Himalayas will provide you good quality crampons and  gaiters.

The climax of this trek comes with a visual bang exposing a host of Garhwal behemoth peaks, unveiling—Kedarnath Peak, Kedardome, Chaukhambha, Balakun, Neel Kantha, Mukut Parvat, Kamet, Abhi Gamin, Mana I, Ghori Parvat, Hathi Parvat, Dronagiri, Kalanka, Changabang, Nanda Devi, Nanda Ghunti.

The magnificence of this vision is incomparable.

In the unlikely event that TTH cancels a trek prior to the scheduled departure date:

While it is extremely rare for TTH to cancel a trek, we understand that unforeseen circumstances or natural disasters may occasionally require us to do so before the scheduled departure. These circumstances could include continuous rain or snow, thunderstorms, snowstorms, landslides, floods, earthquakes, or any other natural calamity that poses a risk to the safety of our trekkers. Additionally, unforeseeable events such as local riots, curfews, pandemics, lockdowns, government orders, or any similar situations that compromise the safety of the trekking experience may also necessitate a cancellation.

In the event of such a cancellation, TTH will provide you with a voucher equivalent to the amount you paid for the trek. This voucher can be redeemed for any of our treks within the next year, allowing you to still enjoy an adventure with us at a later date.

  • The issuance of a voucher is not applicable in situations where you are required to descend from the trek for any reason. The trek leader may make the decision to send you down from the trek due to factors such as insufficient fitness level, symptoms of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS), high blood pressure, exceeding the designated turn-around-time, health concerns, or if you are found smoking, drinking, or violating the rules set for the trek. In such cases, the provision of a voucher does not apply.

In the rare event that TTH shifts a trek:

We would like to emphasize that weather conditions in high-altitude areas are highly unpredictable and can undergo sudden changes at any time, irrespective of the day. Additionally, circumstances beyond our control, such as natural disasters, political unrest, pandemics, and lockdowns, may impact the feasibility of conducting a trek. In cases where we are unable to proceed with an event due to such circumstances that are beyond our direct control, we will make every effort to provide you with an alternative trek that is safer and more suitable.

In such situations, we will issue a voucher to offset the cost difference between the originally scheduled trek and the alternative trek. What I Like and Don’t Like About Kuari Pass Trek

What I Like About the Kuari Pass Trek

Sandhya is a founding partner at Indiahikes. Over the past ten years, she has explored and put on the map a few of the greatest Himalayan treks in India, including Kashmir Great Lakes and Kedarkantha. She is a TedX Speaker and has been awarded the Women of Worth Award by Outlook Business in 2017. Here’s Sandhya talking about one of our most Beautiful Trek Amidst the Tallest Summits treks in our country.

1 . The rare view of Mt Nanda Devi

What I like about the Kuari Pass trek is that it offers easy access to this spectacular view. You see Mt. Nanda Devi from Gorson Bugyal to Auli. After you cross the Gorson Bugyal, the view disappears.

This view of Nanda Devi is one top reason why I would do the Kuari Pass trek.

Not only, Nanda Devi, you see other big mountains also, like the Dronagiri mountains. Dronagiri and Mt. Nanda Devi stand side by side. You see Neelkanth, Chaukhamba, Hathi, Ghoda all pretty close.

2 . The picturesque oak forests

The lovely oak forests of Kuari Pass are the second reason why I like this trek. These forests are typical in the Uttarakhand region, but you find them only in certain treks like Roopkund, Brahmatal, and Dayara Bugyal.

Compared to the rest, I like the oak forest of Kuari Pass the best. This is simply because oak forests on this trek are placed so beautifully. These oak forests come in a section where the climb is not very steep. So, you have an easy walk through the oak forest.

It’s magical to see oak forests in snowfall. Usually, our mind conjures up images of pine forests in snowfall. But here, the experience is different.

As snow falls through the oak forests, it’s almost like you see bows being formed on the trees. It feels like only the red balls are missing now to complete the look.

Apart from the look, the Kuari Pass trek has an interesting landscape with oak forests merging into meadows. Unlike the steep forest sections on Roopkund and Brahmatal trek, here it is gradual. So it’s like a flattish oak forest walk where you can appreciate the beauty. And this section is not very long. You come across it on Day 3 and Day 4 of the trek for around one and a half and two hours.

This, especially with the snow and oak forest combination, makes for a very beautiful experience.

3 . The unforgettable walks in the meadows

The next big reason to do the Kuari Pass trek is the Gorson Bugyal. Once you cross the tree line, the Gorson Bugyal stretches in front of you. It’s not like Ali Bugyal. But the setting of this bugyal lingers in your mind long after you are back from the trek.

As you step into Gorson Bugyal, on one side you have the grand Dronagiri and Nanda Devi.  And then, on the other side, you have these green meadows stretched in front of you.

The pretty Gorson Bugyal is one part of it. The other part is Chitrakantha. This is a meadowy ridge at 12,000 feet. To walk on this ridge is also an experience to cherish.

What’s great is that the meadows of Kuari Pass are extremely beautiful in any season. If you go in early autumn, it’s lush green. In late autumn it is golden, and it is also extremely beautiful. And winter offers a stark, white setting.

In all settings, the meadows and the mountain views in contrast are very beautiful.

Through and through it’s a meadow. The trek ends with the setting of a meadow. During summer, snow melts from the meadow and you have fresh green grass growing.

It is a legendary trail. You have the Lord Curzon trail passing through it. Kuari Pass is an old trek.

What I don't Like About the Kuari Pass Trek

1 . Trek Route from Auli

I wish the Kuari Pass trek had started from the Auli side. Now, the trek starts from Karchi and ends at Auli. I wish it was the other way round.

I’ll tell you why. When you trek to Kuari Pass from the Karchi side, all the spectacular mountain views are behind you. I miss having these views in front of me. You get this when you do the trek from Auli. But that route is not very practical.

From Auli, you tend to gain altitude too quickly while reaching the next campsite at Tali. And, availability of water here is also a challenge.

Due to these reasons, it’s better to begin the trek from the Karchi side. But I wish it was the other way round.

Not only, Nanda Devi, you see other big mountains also, like the Dronagiri mountains. Dronagiri and Mt. Nanda Devi stand side by side. You seeNeelkanth, Chaukhamba, Hathi Ghoda all pretty close.

Do you know the story behind the naming of Kuari Pass?

auli to kuari pass trek

The name Kuari Pass was coined in 1905. It was coined by Lord Curzon, who trekked from Ghat, Gwaldam to Kuari Pass. The trail is well known as Kuari Pass or Lord Curzon Trail now.

Before 1905, the locals did not take this pass and were fairly untouched. The pass was untouched because of the local deity.

Lord Curzon took this cue from the local language of what stands for Virgin land and termed it Kuari Pass.

There is another mystery about the name of Kuari Pass. It is said that there was a Japanese traveller who attempted to climb Nanda Devi with her daughter. But, unfortunately, they disappeared on this climb.

After multiple search attempts, the daughter was found on Kuari Pass, but the mother wasn't. Legend says that the daughter's name was Kurai and the mother's name was Nanda. Hence, the names were given to the mountains.

5 Reasons Why Indiahikes

auli to kuari pass trek

When we brought out new trails in Indian trekking, safety came with us. Back in 2012, we were the first to introduce microspikes, and two years later, pulse oximeters became standard thanks to us. Nobody does safe treks like Indiahikes. In the mountains, emergencies don't care who you're with – everyone knows that when trouble hits, you look for the yellow tents of Indiahikes.

auli to kuari pass trek

We are pioneers in trekking. Since 2007, we have brought out treks that have become India's most famous treks: Roopkund, Rupin Pass, Buran Ghati, Kedarkantha, Kashmir Great Lakes, Tarsar Marsar, Brahmatal, Phulara Ridge—the list goes on. In 2023 alone, we brought out five new treks in Indian trekking. We know treks better than anyone . This comes directly from the reason why Indiahikes was born: to bring out trek information and enable trekkers to trek on their own.

auli to kuari pass trek

More than 25,000 people trek with us every year. We are the largest trekking organisation in India. 24% of our trekkers come back to trek with us every year. Over 4,000 students from the top educational institutions trek with us every year. Aside from this, families with children choose to trek with Indiahikes knowing that our treks are the safest. We have taken over 8000 children trekking so far, and the number continues to grow.

auli to kuari pass trek

We focus on designing transformative experiences. Our trek leaders conduct thought-provoking exercises that help you reflect and contemplate. This impact stays with you for a long time. Trekkers return feeling energised, more confident, or developing abilities to deal with difficulties. Many have changed careers, rethought their core values, become more humble, shown gratitude to others, or started a new fitness journey.

auli to kuari pass trek

Since 2012, we have pioneered sustainable practices that have become standard in trekking. Using eco-bags, our trekkers have cleared over 120 tonnes of litter from the mountains. We do not carry packaged foods; instead, we serve freshly made food. We do not light campfires; we carry coal to light angethis to keep you warm. Our bio-toilets not only keep our toilets odour-free but also enrich the soil. When you trek with us, you leave mountains better.

Day 1: Rishikesh – Ghat Village (175 kms – Drive 7-8 hrs)

Morning meet and greet by our team, drive to Ghat village via Devprayag, Rudraprayag, Karnprayag and Nandprayag, the most holy confluences of Garhwal Himalayas. Overnight in camp.

Day 2: Ghat – Selu Bagar – Jhinjhi Village (16 kms/7-8 hrs)

Morning drive to Selu Bagar, a small center with a handful of shacks serving as village shops and is our starting point for the trek. You meet our ponies/porters at this point. From here its walk through the village full of colors of Himalayan inhabitants makes hike more entertaining.

The trail from this point climbs with a couple of switch backs which again becomes gentle and takes you to an open meadow with gorgeous views of Nanda Ghunti peak. From the pass the trail starts to drop down gently and in point in times becomes steep, which continues to drop passing through Sem Kharak and finally takes you to the Jhinjhi village. Dinner and Overnight in the camp.

Day 3 :   Jhinjhi – Pana Village (8 kms/4-5 hrs)

Today’s walk begins with a chance to experience the way of life and culture of the people in Jhinjhi village. You’ll also enjoy some nice views of nearby villages and impressive Himalayan peaks along the way.

The path is mostly easy, taking you through a lovely Rhododendron forest and past Kaliagad until you reach the village of Pana. To end the day, there’s a short uphill climb of less than a kilometer to reach our campsite above Pana village, where we’ll spend the night.

Day 4 : Pana – Dakhwani (3300 mts/10824 ft) 14 kms/5 hrs

The trail is easy to follow beyond the campsite. It goes through a beautiful Rhododendron forest, with a few small hills to climb. Eventually, it leads to a ridge. From there, the path continues gently through the forest and opens up to a meadow called Sartoli. This meadow serves as a camping site and a place for sheep and cattle to graze.

From Sartoli, it takes about half an hour to reach the campsite at Dhakwani. There, you can enjoy a cup of tea with a delightful taste. Dinner and night stay at this campsite.

Day 5 : Dakhwani – Kuari Pass (3800 mts/ 12500 ft) – Tali (9 kms/5-6 hrs)

On this day, it’s best to start early to witness a breathtaking view at the pass. The trail from Dakhwani keeps going uphill through the forest until we leave the tree-covered area. At this point, the path moves to the left side of the valley, just below the pass. It then zigzags its way up to the pass.

Once you reach the pass, you’ll be treated to an absolutely amazing view of the majestic Greater Himalayas. Take your time, relax, and capture some stunning photographs at this spot. Afterward, the trail goes slightly up to a small hill where you’ll get an excellent view of the Dronagiri peak.

Following this, the trail goes downhill to a point where it splits into two paths, one leading to Tapovan and the other to Tali. Continue on the trail to Tali, which leads to a ridge with a temple and prayer flags. From here, you’ll be able to see the impressive Nanda Devi peak. The trail then passes through pasturelands, enters a forest, and finally leads to the campsite at Tali, where we’ll spend the night.

Day 6 : Tali – Auli – Joshimath (2550 mts/8364 ft) 17 kms/5-6 hrs

This morning, you can take it easy and relax. The trail from Tali involves a gradual climb along a mountain ridge. This path is narrow, so you’ll need to walk carefully until you reach Gorson meadows. From here, you’ll be surrounded by the stunning Himalayan mountains. The majestic Nanda Devi peak stands out among them.

Walking across Gorson meadows is a lot of fun and very enjoyable. Eventually, you’ll see some man-made structures in the distance, which mark the village of Auli. It’s time to bid farewell to the ponies and porters. You’ll then hop on a jeep for a 13-kilometer ride to the town of Joshimath.

Joshimath is a bustling marketplace and provides supplies to nearby villages. You’ll spend the night in a hotel there.

Day 7 : Joshimath – Rishikesh (248 km – 7/8 hrs drive)

In the early morning, we will take a drive to Rishikesh. Along the way, we will make a stop at Rudraprayag for lunch, a place where the Mandakini and Alaknanda rivers come together. By evening, we will reach Rishikesh and check into a hotel for dinner and an overnight stay.

Apart from these, Nanda Ghunti, Hathi Ghoda Parbat, Neelkanth , Dronagiri, Mukut Parbat, Mana, Rishi Pahad, and Changbang are some of the peaks that can also be seen from here.

It offers totally a different scenic beauty when the meaodws are covered with snow and lakes are frozen. Also, you get to visit Auli in its best season and you can also enjoy skiing in Auli as well.

There are four routes to reach Kuari Pass

Trek Route 1 or Curzon Trail: Ghat, Ramni, Sanatoli to Kuari Pass ( 06 days) Ghat is a small friendly settlement in the Nandakini Valley and located about 19 km from Nandprayag . From Ghat, the trekking route goes via Ramni, Sarkot, Jhenjipatni, Pana, Irani, Sanatoli, and Domabhiti to the Kuari Pass.

Trek Route 2 : Joshimath, Auli, and Gorson to Kuari Pass (05 days) From Auli, the trekking route trails its way though the bugyals and rich green forests, with the Himalayas always in view, to Gailgarh and Kuari. The camping grounds are an absolute delight – areas of undulating slopes, carpeted with rich, green grass and set in beautiful natural surroundings. From Tali to Chitrakantha, there is only a goat track and horses and mules cannot go along here.

Trek Route 3 : Joshimath, Mirag, Tugasi and Khulara to Kuari Pass (05 days) This trek starts from Joshimath via Mirag, Tugasi and Khulara to Gailgarh and Kuari pass is popular with those who have no interest in the bugyals of Auli and Gorson .

Trek Route 4 : Tapovan, Khulara to Kuari Pass (05 days) This trek starts from Tapovan, which is 16 km from Joshimath on the main road to Malari . The trek begins and ends with a climb and takes one through the glorious Tapovan Valley . Although it is the shortest route and meets the third trek at Khulara the climb on this route is very steep and tiring. It is always better to climb down on this route.

This path, now famously known as Kuari Pass or Lord Curzon Trail, had remained undiscovered by the locals until then. The pass had been left undisturbed due to the presence of a local deity. Inspired by the local language’s term for “Virgin land,” Lord Curzon aptly named it Kuari Pass. Interestingly, there is another intriguing tale surrounding the origin of this name. It is said that a Japanese traveler and her daughter embarked on a journey to climb Nanda Devi, but mysteriously vanished during the ascent. After numerous search efforts, only the daughter was found on Kuari Pass, while the mother remained missing. Legend has it that the daughter’s name was Kuari and the mother’s name was Nanda, thus bestowing these names upon the mountains themselves.
