Multi-destination trips and travel insurance

allianz travel insurance multiple countries

Planning your journey

You’ve managed to set aside several weeks, perhaps months, to go on the trip of a lifetime to multiple countries. To get the most out of your money, consider airlines that offer stopovers between home and a final destination. Stopovers are a great way to fly to two cities for the cost of one. A deal long offered by European and Middle Eastern Airlines, stopovers are extended layovers of usually up to a week. Some airlines also offer sightseeing packages and accommodations in major hubs. You can also book multi-city airfares through travel search engines such as KAYAK .

You could also consider choosing a country as a temporary home base that has a low cost of living, a robust market for budget airlines, and is near other international destinations you have your heart set on.  Additionally, visiting regions connected by efficient, extensive train travel is optimal. Safety may also be of concern. Be sure to check for any advisories for your destination before travelling .

If you want to take the big plunge and literally circumnavigate the globe, the most economical way to go is to purchase a round-the-world ticket from an airline alliance . As partnerships between independent airlines worldwide, airline alliances can connect you to geographically diverse hubs. You can stop at multiple points, and pay for it all at once. The primary alliances in the airline industry are Star Alliance, One World , and Skyteam ; the largest of which is Star Alliance . A confederation of 26 airlines that fly to 1,300 airports, Star Alliance has a presence in 98 percent of nations.

Should I purchase travel insurance

Travel insurance is a necessity for protecting your health, belongings and trip plans while travelling abroad. You should know that your government health insurance plan may not fully protect you in the event of medical emergencies you may have while travelling outside your home province. Travel insurance by Allianz Global Assistance may help you fill these coverage gaps during your multi-national excursion.

If you’re planning an extensive trip that will have you jet setting for most of the year, consider an annual policy. Annual travel insurance coverage by Allianz Global Assistance gives you the convenience of paying one annual fee for as many trips as you may take during the year . Our annual plans may cover medical and dental emergency care and transportation for unlimited trips, up to 10 or 30 days.

What should I look for in a travel insurance policy?

Before shopping for a travel policy, you should consider a few details. Are you travelling with kids? Do you have a pre-existing condition? How long will you be travelling? Allianz Global Assistance covers emergency transportation home for dependents travelling with you if you’re hospitalized. We also provide a $500 reimbursement for the return of your pets to Canada if you are hospitalized.

Travel insurance by Allianz Global Assistance also may also cover pre-existing conditions under certain conditions. Depending on factors like the traveller's age and trip length, the pre-existing condition exclusion will require that any previous medical condition be stable for a specified period of time before your departure date (e.g. 90 or 180 days). For more information, read more about our plan options .

Read the fine print

Be aware of any coverage exclusions, which are situations in which your travel insurance won’t reimburse for losses . Exclusions include injuries due to extreme sports, such as climbing, and any event that was foreseeable, or expected when your plan was purchased. And be sure to keep a copy of your policy handy during your travels, or download our TripWise Mobile App for on-the-go information about coverage. You can also use the app to quickly file a claim, access information on nearby medical facilities and pharmacies, and more.

As a world leader in travel protection, we help Canadians and Visitors to Canada answer the call of adventure with confidence every year. Let us be there for you too .

The best travel insurance policies and providers

Katie Genter

It's easy to dismiss the value of travel insurance until you need it.

Many travelers have strong opinions about whether you should buy travel insurance . However, the purpose of this post isn't to determine whether it's worth investing in. Instead, it compares some of the top travel insurance providers and policies so you can determine which travel insurance option is best for you.

Of course, as the coronavirus remains an ongoing concern, it's important to understand whether travel insurance covers pandemics. Some policies will cover you if you're diagnosed with COVID-19 and have proof of illness from a doctor. Others will take coverage a step further, covering additional types of pandemic-related expenses and cancellations.

Know, though, that every policy will have exclusions and restrictions that may limit coverage. For example, fear of travel is generally not a covered reason for invoking trip cancellation or interruption coverage, while specific stipulations may apply to elevated travel warnings from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Interested in travel insurance? Visit InsureMyTrip.com to shop for plans that may fit your travel needs.

So, before buying a specific policy, you must understand the full terms and any special notices the insurer has about COVID-19. You may even want to buy the optional cancel for any reason add-on that's available for some comprehensive policies. While you'll pay more for that protection, it allows you to cancel your trip for any reason and still get some of your costs back. Note that this benefit is time-sensitive and has other eligibility requirements, so not all travelers will qualify.

In this guide, we'll review several policies from top travel insurance providers so you have a better understanding of your options before picking the policy and provider that best address your wants and needs.

The best travel insurance providers

To put together this list of the best travel insurance providers, a number of details were considered: favorable ratings from TPG Lounge members, the availability of details about policies and the claims process online, positive online ratings and the ability to purchase policies in most U.S. states. You can also search for options from these (and other) providers through an insurance comparison site like InsureMyTrip .

When comparing insurance providers, I priced out a single-trip policy for each provider for a $2,000, one-week vacation to Istanbul . I used my actual age and state of residence when obtaining quotes. As a result, you may see a different price — or even additional policies due to regulations for travel insurance varying from state to state — when getting a quote.

AIG Travel Guard

AIG Travel Guard receives many positive reviews from readers in the TPG Lounge who have filed claims with the company. AIG offers three plans online, which you can compare side by side, and the ability to examine sample policies. Here are three plans for my sample trip to Turkey.

allianz travel insurance multiple countries

AIG Travel Guard also offers an annual travel plan. This plan is priced at $259 per year for one Florida resident.

Additionally, AIG Travel Guard offers several other policies, including a single-trip policy without trip cancellation protection . See AIG Travel Guard's COVID-19 notification and COVID-19 advisory for current details regarding COVID-19 coverage.

Preexisting conditions

Typically, AIG Travel Guard wouldn't cover you for any loss or expense due to a preexisting medical condition that existed within 180 days of the coverage effective date. However, AIG Travel Guard may waive the preexisting medical condition exclusion on some plans if you meet the following conditions:

  • You purchase the plan within 15 days of your initial trip payment.
  • The amount of coverage you purchase equals all trip costs at the time of purchase. You must update your coverage to insure the costs of any subsequent arrangements that you add to your trip within 15 days of paying the travel supplier for these additional arrangements.
  • You must be medically able to travel when you purchase your plan.

Standout features

  • The Deluxe and Preferred plans allow you to purchase an upgrade that lets you cancel your trip for any reason. However, reimbursement under this coverage will not exceed 50% or 75% of your covered trip cost.
  • You can include one child (age 17 and younger) with each paying adult for no additional cost on most single-trip plans.
  • Other optional upgrades, including an adventure sports bundle, a baggage bundle, an inconvenience bundle, a pet bundle, a security bundle and a wedding bundle, are available on some policies. So, an AIG Travel Guard plan may be a good choice if you know you want extra coverage in specific areas.

Purchase your policy here: AIG Travel Guard .

Allianz Travel Insurance

Allianz is one of the most highly regarded providers in the TPG Lounge, and many readers found the claim process reasonable. Allianz offers many plans, including the following single-trip plans for my sample trip to Turkey.

allianz travel insurance multiple countries

If you travel frequently, it may make sense to purchase an annual multi-trip policy. For this plan, all of the maximum coverage amounts in the table below are per trip (except for the trip cancellation and trip interruption amounts, which are an aggregate limit per policy). Trips typically must last no more than 45 days, although some plans may cover trips of up to 90 days.

allianz travel insurance multiple countries

See Allianz's coverage alert for current information on COVID-19 coverage.

Most Allianz travel insurance plans may cover preexisting medical conditions if you meet particular requirements. For the OneTrip Premier, Prime and Basic plans, the requirements are as follows:

  • You purchased the policy within 14 days of the date of the first trip payment or deposit.
  • You were a U.S. resident when you purchased the policy.
  • You were medically able to travel when you purchased the policy.
  • On the policy purchase date, you insured the total, nonrefundable cost of your trip (including arrangements that will become nonrefundable or subject to cancellation penalties before your departure date). If you incur additional nonrefundable trip expenses after purchasing this policy, you must insure them within 14 days of their purchase.
  • Allianz offers reasonably priced annual policies for independent travelers and families who take multiple trips lasting up to 45 days (or 90 days for select plans) per year.
  • Some Allianz plans provide the option of receiving a flat reimbursement amount without receipts for trip delay and baggage delay claims. Of course, you can also submit receipts to get up to the maximum refund.
  • For emergency transportation coverage, you or someone on your behalf must contact Allianz, and Allianz must then make all transportation arrangements in advance. However, most Allianz policies provide an option if you cannot contact the company: Allianz will pay up to what it would have paid if it had made the arrangements.

Purchase your policy here: Allianz Travel Insurance .

American Express Travel Insurance

American Express Travel Insurance offers four different package plans and a build-your-own coverage option. You don't have to be an American Express cardholder to purchase this insurance. Here are the four package options for my sample weeklong trip to Turkey. Unlike some other providers, Amex won't ask for your travel destination on the initial quote (but will when you purchase the plan).

allianz travel insurance multiple countries

Amex's build-your-own coverage plan is unique because you can purchase just the coverage you need. For most types of protection, you can even select the coverage amount that works best for you.

allianz travel insurance multiple countries

The prices for the packages and the build-your-own plan don't increase for longer trips — as long as the trip cost remains constant. However, the emergency medical and dental benefit is only available for your first 60 days of travel.

Typically, Amex won't cover any loss you incur because of a preexisting medical condition that existed within 90 days of the coverage effective date. However, Amex may waive its preexisting-condition exclusion if you meet both of the following requirements:

  • You must be medically able to travel at the time you pay the policy premium.
  • You pay the policy premium within 14 days of making the first covered trip deposit.
  • Amex's build-your-own coverage option allows you to only purchase — and pay for — the coverage you need.
  • Coverage on long trips doesn't cost more than coverage for short trips, making this policy ideal for extended getaways. However, the emergency medical and dental benefit only covers your first 60 days of travel.
  • American Express Travel Insurance can protect travel expenses you purchase with Amex Membership Rewards points in the Pay with Points program (as well as travel expenses bought with cash, debit or credit). However, travel expenses bought with other types of points and miles aren't covered.

Purchase your policy here: American Express Travel Insurance .

GeoBlue is different from most other providers described in this piece because it only provides medical coverage while you're traveling internationally and does not offer benefits to protect the cost of your trip. There are many different policies. Some require you to have primary health insurance in the U.S. (although it doesn't need to be provided by Blue Cross Blue Shield), but all of them only offer coverage while traveling outside the U.S.

Two single-trip plans are available if you're traveling for six months or less. The Voyager Choice policy provides coverage (including medical services and medical evacuation for a sudden recurrence of a preexisting condition) for trips outside the U.S. to travelers who are 95 or younger and already have a U.S. health insurance policy.

allianz travel insurance multiple countries

The Voyager Essential policy provides coverage (including medical evacuation for a sudden recurrence of a preexisting condition) for trips outside the U.S. to travelers who are 95 or younger, regardless of whether they have primary health insurance.

allianz travel insurance multiple countries

In addition to these options, two multi-trip plans cover trips of up to 70 days each for one year. Both policies provide coverage (including medical services and medical evacuation for preexisting conditions) to travelers with primary health insurance.

allianz travel insurance multiple countries

Be sure to check out GeoBlue's COVID-19 notices before buying a plan.

Most GeoBlue policies explicitly cover sudden recurrences of preexisting conditions for medical services and medical evacuation.

  • GeoBlue can be an excellent option if you're mainly concerned about the medical side of travel insurance.
  • GeoBlue provides single-trip, multi-trip and long-term medical travel insurance policies for many different types of travel.

Purchase your policy here: GeoBlue .

IMG offers various travel medical insurance policies for travelers, as well as comprehensive travel insurance policies. For a single trip of 90 days or less, there are five policy types available for vacation or holiday travelers. Although you must enter your gender, males and females received the same quote for my one-week search.

allianz travel insurance multiple countries

You can purchase an annual multi-trip travel medical insurance plan. Some only cover trips lasting up to 30 or 45 days, but others provide coverage for longer trips.

allianz travel insurance multiple countries

See IMG's page on COVID-19 for additional policy information as it relates to coronavirus-related claims.

Most plans may cover preexisting conditions under set parameters or up to specific amounts. For example, the iTravelInsured Travel LX travel insurance plan shown above may cover preexisting conditions if you purchase the insurance within 24 hours of making the final payment for your trip.

For the travel medical insurance plans shown above, preexisting conditions are covered for travelers younger than 70. However, coverage is capped based on your age and whether you have a primary health insurance policy.

  • Some annual multi-trip plans are modestly priced.
  • iTravelInsured Travel LX may offer optional cancel for any reason and interruption for any reason coverage, if eligible.

Purchase your policy here: IMG .

Travelex Insurance

Travelex offers three single-trip plans: Travel Basic, Travel Select and Travel America. However, only the Travel Basic and Travel Select plans would be applicable for my trip to Turkey.

allianz travel insurance multiple countries

See Travelex's COVID-19 coverage statement for coronavirus-specific information.

Typically, Travelex won't cover losses incurred because of a preexisting medical condition that existed within 60 days of the coverage effective date. However, the Travel Select plan may offer a preexisting condition exclusion waiver. To be eligible for this waiver, the insured traveler must meet all the following conditions:

  • You purchase the plan within 15 days of the initial trip payment.
  • The amount of coverage purchased equals all prepaid, nonrefundable payments or deposits applicable to the trip at the time of purchase. Additionally, you must insure the costs of any subsequent arrangements added to the same trip within 15 days of payment or deposit.
  • All insured individuals are medically able to travel when they pay the plan cost.
  • The trip cost does not exceed the maximum trip cost limit under trip cancellation as shown in the schedule per person (only applicable to trip cancellation, interruption and delay).
  • Travelex's Travel Select policy can cover trips lasting up to 364 days, which is longer than many single-trip policies.
  • Neither Travelex policy requires receipts for trip and baggage delay expenses less than $25.
  • For emergency evacuation coverage, you or someone on your behalf must contact Travelex and have Travelex make all transportation arrangements in advance. However, both Travelex policies provide an option if you cannot contact Travelex: Travelex will pay up to what it would have paid if it had made the arrangements.

Purchase your policy here: Travelex Insurance .

Seven Corners

Seven Corners offers a wide variety of policies. Here are the policies that are most applicable to travelers on a single international trip.

allianz travel insurance multiple countries

Seven Corners also offers many other types of travel insurance, including an annual multi-trip plan. You can choose coverage for trips of up to 30, 45 or 60 days when purchasing an annual multi-trip plan.

allianz travel insurance multiple countries

See Seven Corner's page on COVID-19 for additional policy information as it relates to coronavirus-related claims.

Typically, Seven Corners won't cover losses incurred because of a preexisting medical condition. However, the RoundTrip Choice plan offers a preexisting condition exclusion waiver. To be eligible for this waiver, you must meet all of the following conditions:

  • You buy this plan within 20 days of making your initial trip payment or deposit.
  • You or your travel companion are medically able and not disabled from travel when you pay for this plan or upgrade your plan.
  • You update the coverage to include the additional cost of subsequent travel arrangements within 15 days of paying your travel supplier for them.
  • Seven Corners offers the ability to purchase optional sports and golf equipment coverage. If purchased, this extra insurance will reimburse you for the cost of renting sports or golf equipment if yours is lost, stolen, damaged or delayed by a common carrier for six or more hours. However, Seven Corners must authorize the expenses in advance.
  • You can add cancel for any reason coverage or trip interruption for any reason coverage to RoundTrip plans. Although some other providers offer cancel for any reason coverage, trip interruption for any reason coverage is less common.
  • Seven Corners' RoundTrip Choice policy offers a political or security evacuation benefit that will transport you to the nearest safe place or your residence under specific conditions. You can also add optional event ticket registration fee protection to the RoundTrip Choice policy.

Purchase your policy here: Seven Corners .

World Nomads

World Nomads is popular with younger, active travelers because of its flexibility and adventure-activities coverage on the Explorer plan. Unlike many policies offered by other providers, you don't need to estimate prepaid costs when purchasing the insurance to have access to trip interruption and cancellation insurance.

World Nomads offers two single-trip plans.

allianz travel insurance multiple countries

World Nomads has a page dedicated to coronavirus coverage , so be sure to view it before buying a policy.

World Nomads won't cover losses incurred because of a preexisting medical condition (except emergency evacuation and repatriation of remains) that existed within 90 days of the coverage effective date. Unlike many other providers, World Nomads doesn't offer a waiver.

  • World Nomads' policies cover more adventure sports than most providers, so activities such as bungee jumping are included. The Explorer policy covers almost any adventure sport, including skydiving, stunt flying and caving. So, if you partake in adventure sports while traveling, the Explorer policy may be a good fit.
  • World Nomads' policies provide nonmedical evacuation coverage for transportation expenses if there is civil or political unrest in the country you are visiting. The coverage may also transport you home if there is an eligible natural disaster or a government expels you.

Purchase your policy here: World Nomads .

Other options for buying travel insurance

allianz travel insurance multiple countries

This guide details the policies of eight providers with the information available at the time of publication. There are many options when it comes to travel insurance, though. To compare different policies quickly, you can use a travel insurance aggregator like InsureMyTrip to search. Just note that these search engines won't show every policy and every provider, and you should still research the provided policies to ensure the coverage fits your trip and needs.

You can also purchase a plan through various membership associations, such as USAA, AAA or Costco. Typically, these organizations partner with a specific provider, so if you are a member of any of these associations, you may want to compare the policies offered through the organization with other policies to get the best coverage for your trip.

Related: Should you get travel insurance if you have credit card protection?

Is travel insurance worth getting?

Whether you should purchase travel insurance is a personal decision. Suppose you use a credit card that provides travel insurance for most of your expenses and have medical insurance that provides adequate coverage abroad. In that case, you may be covered enough on most trips to forgo purchasing travel insurance.

However, suppose your medical insurance won't cover you at your destination and you can't comfortably cover a sizable medical evacuation bill or last-minute flight home . In that case, you should consider purchasing travel insurance. If you travel frequently, buying an annual multi-trip policy may be worth it.

What is the best COVID-19 travel insurance?

allianz travel insurance multiple countries

There are various aspects to keep in mind in the age of COVID-19. Consider booking travel plans that are fully refundable or have modest change or cancellation fees so you don't need to worry about whether your policy will cover trip cancellation. This is important since many standard comprehensive insurance policies won't reimburse your insured expenses in the event of cancellation if it's related to the fear of traveling due to COVID-19.

However, if you book a nonrefundable trip and want to maintain the ability to get reimbursed (up to 75% of your insured costs) if you choose to cancel, you should consider buying a comprehensive travel insurance policy and then adding optional cancel for any reason protection. Just note that this benefit is time-sensitive and has eligibility requirements, so not all travelers will qualify.

Providers will often require CFAR purchasers insure the entire dollar amount of their travels to receive the coverage. Also, many CFAR policies mandate that you must cancel your plans and notify all travel suppliers at least 48 hours before your scheduled departure.

Likewise, if your primary health insurance won't cover you while on your trip, it's essential to consider whether medical expenses related to COVID-19 treatment are covered. You may also want to consider a MedJet medical transport membership if your trip is to a covered destination for coronavirus-related evacuation.

Ultimately, the best pandemic travel insurance policy will depend on your trip details, travel concerns and your willingness to self-insure. Just be sure to thoroughly read and understand any terms or exclusions before purchasing.

What are the different types of travel insurance?

allianz travel insurance multiple countries

Whether you purchase a comprehensive travel insurance policy or rely on the protections offered by select credit cards, you may have access to the following types of coverage:

  • Baggage delay protection may reimburse for essential items and clothing when a common carrier (such as an airline) fails to deliver your checked bag within a set time of your arrival at a destination. Typically, you may be reimbursed up to a particular amount per incident or per day.
  • Lost/damaged baggage protection may provide reimbursement to replace lost or damaged luggage and items inside that luggage. However, valuables and electronics usually have a relatively low maximum benefit.
  • Trip delay reimbursement may provide reimbursement for necessary items, food, lodging and sometimes transportation when you're delayed for a substantial time while traveling on a common carrier such as an airline. This insurance may be beneficial if weather issues (or other covered reasons for which the airline usually won't provide compensation) delay you.
  • Trip cancellation and interruption protection may provide reimbursement if you need to cancel or interrupt your trip for a covered reason, such as a death in your family or jury duty.
  • Medical evacuation insurance can arrange and pay for medical evacuation if deemed necessary by the insurance provider and a medical professional. This coverage can be particularly valuable if you're traveling to a region with subpar medical facilities.
  • Travel accident insurance may provide a payment to you or your beneficiary in the case of your death or dismemberment.
  • Emergency medical insurance may provide payment or reimburse you if you must seek medical care while traveling. Some plans only cover emergency medical care, but some also cover other types of medical care. You may need to pay a deductible or copay.
  • Rental car coverage may provide a collision damage waiver when renting a car. This waiver may reimburse for collision damage or theft up to a set amount. Some policies also cover loss-of-use charges assessed by the rental company and towing charges to take the vehicle to the nearest qualified repair facility. You generally need to decline the rental company's collision damage waiver or similar provision to be covered.

Should I buy travel health insurance?

allianz travel insurance multiple countries

If you purchase travel with credit cards that provide various trip protections, you may not see much need for additional travel insurance. However, you may still wonder whether you should buy travel medical insurance.

If your primary health insurance covers you on your trip, you may not need travel health insurance. Your domestic policy may not cover you outside the U.S., though, so it's worth calling the number on your health insurance card if you have coverage questions. If your primary health insurance wouldn't cover you, it's likely worth purchasing travel medical insurance. After all, as you can see above, travel medical insurance is often very modestly priced.

How much does travel insurance cost?

Travel insurance costs depend on various factors, including the provider, the type of coverage, your trip cost, your destination, your age, your residency and how many travelers you want to insure. That said, a standard travel insurance plan will generally set you back somewhere between 4% and 10% of your total trip cost. However, this can get lower for more basic protections or become even higher if you include add-ons like cancel for any reason protection.

The best way to determine how much travel insurance will cost is to price out your trip with a few providers discussed in the guide. Or, visit an insurance aggregator like InsureMyTrip to quickly compare options across multiple providers.

When and how to get travel insurance

allianz travel insurance multiple countries

For the most robust selection of available travel insurance benefits — including time-sensitive add-ons like CFAR protection and waivers of preexisting conditions for eligible travelers — you should ideally purchase travel insurance on the same day you make your first payment toward your trip.

However, many plans may still offer a preexisting conditions waiver for those who qualify if you buy your travel insurance within 14 to 21 days of your first trip expense or deposit (this time frame may vary by provider). If you don't need a preexisting conditions waiver or aren't interested in CFAR coverage, you can purchase travel insurance once your departure date nears.

You must purchase coverage before it's needed. Some travel medical plans are available for purchase after you have departed, but comprehensive plans that include medical coverage must be purchased before departing.

Additionally, you can't buy any medical coverage once you require medical attention. The same applies to all travel insurance coverage. Once you recognize the need, it's too late to protect your trip.

Once you've shopped around and decided upon the best travel insurance plan for your trip, you should be able to complete your purchase online. You'll usually be able to download your insurance card and the complete policy shortly after the transaction is complete.

Related: 7 times your credit card's travel insurance might not cover you

Bottom line

Not all travel insurance policies and providers are equal. Before buying a plan, read and understand the policy documents. By doing so, you can choose a plan that's appropriate for you and your trip — including the features that matter most to you.

For example, if you plan to go skiing or rock climbing, make sure the policy you buy doesn't contain exclusions for these activities. Likewise, if you're making two back-to-back trips during which you'll be returning home for a short time in between, be sure the plan doesn't terminate coverage at the end of your first trip.

If you're looking to cover a sudden recurrence of a preexisting condition, select a policy with a preexisting condition waiver and fulfill the requirements for the waiver. After all, buying insurance won't help if your policy doesn't cover your losses.

CNBC Select breaks down the types of coverage Allianz includes in its policies, the features it offers and other providers you should consider.

The best way to estimate your costs is to request a quote

Policy highlights

10 travel insurance plans make it possible to customize your coverage. For families, Allianz's OneTrip Prime package covers children age 17 and younger when traveling with a parent or grandparent.

24/7 assistance available

  • Trip cancellation benefits can reimburse your prepaid, nonrefundable trip payments if you have to cancel your trip for one of the covered reasons stated in your plan documents.
  • Limited coverage for risky sports

Allianz Travel Insurance is a global insurance provider. It partners with airlines, travel agencies, resorts, credit card issuers and other companies to offer worldwide travel coverage. The insurer currently offers 10 trip coverage plans, giving travelers plenty of options that range from single-trip plans to plans that cover all your travel for a year.

For example, OneTrip Prime provides trip cancellation/interruption, emergency transportation, baggage loss or delay and other key benefits for a single trip up to 180 days. AllTrips Executive, on the other hand, is a multi-trip plan designed for business travel with higher trip cancellation and interruption limits and coverage for business equipment. You can also opt for OneTrip Rental Car Protector if you need primary car rental coverage against collision, loss and damage.

These plans let you easily tailor your insurance to your situation. Here are the types of coverage that Allianz Travel can include in your plan:

  • Trip cancellation
  • Trip interruption
  • Emergency medical (this covers medical and dental emergencies that happen during your trip)
  • Emergency medical transportation
  • Baggage loss/damage
  • Baggage delay
  • Travel delay
  • Travel accident

  • Loyalty program redeposit fee coverage (with this coverage, you can get reimbursement for frequent flyer mile redeposit fees if your trip is canceled or interrupted)
  • 24/7 hotline assistance
  • Concierge services
  • Rental car collision damage waiver
  • Existing medical condition (this benefit waives the pre-existing medical condition coverage exclusion)

The types and limits of coverage benefits you can get vary by plan.

Many travel cards provide travel insurance benefits . To avoid duplicate coverage, go through your card's terms and conditions and see what your issuer already offers.

One of the features that helped Allianz Travel land a spot on our list of the best travel insurance is the Cancel Anytime benefit. Included with OneTrip Prime and OneTrip Premier plans, Cancel Anytime can reimburse 80% of your unused, pre-paid, non-refundable trip costs if you have to cancel your trip for just about any unexpected reason.

Additionally, the insurer offers 24/7 global assistance to refer you to a prescreened hospital during your trip.

Policyholders can also use the TravelSmart TM  app and check for flight status updates, the latest travel advisories and restrictions for their destination, local emergency services and hospitals and more. The app allows travelers to pull up their protection plan whenever they need and file a claim online.

11 Best Travel Insurance Companies in April 2024

Sean Cudahy

Many or all of the products featured here are from our partners who compensate us. This influences which products we write about and where and how the product appears on a page. However, this does not influence our evaluations. Our opinions are our own. Here is a list of our partners and here's how we make money .

If the past few years have shown us anything, it’s that travelers need to be prepared for the unexpected — from a pandemic to flight troubles to the crowded airport terminals so many of us have encountered.

Whether you’re looking for an international travel insurance plan, emergency medical care or a policy that includes extreme sports, these are the best travel insurance providers to get you covered.

How we found the best travel insurance

We looked at quotes from various companies for a 10-day trip to Mexico in September 2024. The traveler was a 55-year-old woman from Florida who spent $3,000 total on the trip, including airfare.

On average, the price of each company’s most basic coverage plan was $126.53. The costs displayed below do not include optional add-ons, such as Cancel For Any Reason coverage or pre-existing medical condition coverage.

Read our full analysis about the average cost of travel insurance so you can budget better for your next trip.

However, depending on the plan, you may be able to customize at an added cost.

As we continue to evaluate more travel insurance companies and receive fresh market data, this collection of best travel insurance companies is likely to change. See our full methodology for more details.

Note that the Standard plan ($72 for our sample trip), while the most affordable, provides less coverage than other plans. But it can be a good choice for travelers who are satisfied with trip cancellation and interruption coverage of $2,500 or less, do not need rental car damage protection, find the limits to be sufficient and do not need coverage for certain more adventurous activities.

What else makes World Nomads great:

Comprehensive international travel insurance plans.

  • In addition Cancel For Any Reason, some plans offer cancel for work reason coverage.
  • Adventure sports-specific coverage is available.
  • Plans have overlap that can be hard to distinguish.
  • Only one plan includes Rental Car Damage coverage available as an add-on.

Tin Leg’s Basic plan came in at $134 for our sample trip, adding about $8 onto the average basic policy cost. Note that you’ll pay a lot more if you shop for the most comprehensive coverage, and there are eight plans to choose from for trips abroad.

The multitude of plans can help you find coverage that fits your needs, but with so many to choose from, deciding can be daunting.

The only real way to figure out your ideal plan is to compare them all, look at the plan details and decide which features and coverage suit you and your travel style best.

Selecting your travel insurance plan with TravelSafe is a fairly straightforward process. The company’s website also makes it easy to visualize how optional add-on elements influence the total cost, displaying the final price as soon as you click the coverage.

However, at $136, the Basic plan was among the more expensive for our trip to Mexico.

What else makes TravelSafe great:

As you shop for travel insurance, you’ll find many of the same coverage categories across numerous plans.

Trip cancellation

This covers the prepaid costs you make for your trip in cases when you need to cancel for a covered reason. This coverage helps you recoup upfront costs paid for flights and nonrefundable hotel reservations.

Trip interruption

Trip interruption benefits generally involve disruptions after you depart. It helps reimburse costs incurred for flight delays, cancellations and plenty of other covered disruptions you might encounter during your travels.

This coverage can cover the costs for you to return home or reimburse unexpected expenses like an extra hotel stay, meals and ground transportation.

Trip delay coverage helps cover unexpected costs when your trip is delayed. This is another coverage that helps offset the costs of flight trouble or other travel disruptions.

Note that many policies have a total amount a traveler can claim, with caps on per diem benefits, too.

Cancel For Any Reason

Cancel For Any Reason coverage allows you to recoup some of the upfront costs you paid for a trip even if you’re canceling for a reason not otherwise covered by your standard travel insurance policy.

Typically, adding this protection to your plan costs extra.

Baggage delay

This coverage helps cover the costs of essential items you might need when your luggage is delayed. Think toiletries, clothing and other immediate items you might need if your luggage didn’t make it on your flight.

Many travel insurance plans with baggage delay protection will specify how long (six, 12, 24 hours, etc.) your luggage must be delayed before you can make a claim.

Lost baggage

Used for travelers whose luggage is lost or stolen, this helps recoup the lost value of the items in your bag.

You’ll want to make sure you closely follow the correct procedures for your plan. Many plans include a maximum total amount you can claim under this coverage and a per-item cap.

Travel medical insurance

This covers out-of-pocket medical costs when travelers run into an emergency.

Because many travelers’ health insurance plans don’t cover medical care overseas, travel medical insurance can help offset out-of-pocket health care costs.

In addition to emergency medical coverage, many plans have medical evacuation or repatriation coverage for costs incurred when you must be taken to a hospital or return to your home country because of a medical situation.

Most travel insurance plans cover many trip protections that can help you be prepared for unexpected travel disruptions and expenses.

These coverage are generally aimed at protecting the money you put into your trip, expenses you incur because of travel trouble and costs incurred if you have a medical emergency overseas.

On top of core coverages like trip cancellation and interruption and travel medical coverage, some plans offer add-on options like waivers for pre-existing conditions, rental car collision damage waivers or adventure sports riders. These usually cost extra or must be added within a specified timeframe.

What’s not covered?

Typical travel insurance policies offer coverage for many unforeseen events, but as you research to select a plan, consider your needs. Though every plan differs, there are some commonly excluded coverages.

For instance, you typically can’t get coverage for a named storm if you bought the coverage after the storm was named. In other words, if you have a trip to the Caribbean booked for Sept. 25 and on Sept. 20 a hurricane develops and is named, you generally won’t be able to buy a travel insurance plan Sept. 21 in hopes of getting your money back.

Many plans also don’t cover activities performed under the influence of drugs or alcohol or any extreme sports. If the latter applies to you, you might want to consider a plan with specific coverages for adventure-seekers.

For numerous plans, a few other situations don’t qualify as an acceptable reason to cancel and make a claim, such as fear of travel, medical tourism or pregnancies (unless you booked a trip and bought insurance before you became pregnant or there are complications with the pregnancy). This is where a Cancel For Any Reason add-on to your coverage can be helpful.

You can also run into trouble if you give up on a trip too soon: a minor (or even multihour) flight delay likely isn’t sufficient to cancel your entire trip and get reimbursed through your plan. Be sure to review what requirements your specific plan has when it comes to canceling a trip, claiming trip interruption, etc.

Travel insurance costs vary widely. The final price of your plan will fluctuate based on your age, length of trip and destination.

It will also depend on how much coverage you need, whether you add on specialized policies (like Cancel For Any Reason or pre-existing conditions coverage), whether you plan to participate in extreme sports and other factors.

In our examples above, for instance, the 35-year-old traveler taking a $2,000 trip to Italy would have spent an average $76 for a basic plan to get coverage for things like trip cancellation and interruption, baggage protection, etc. That’s a little less than 4% of the total trip cost — lower than average.

If there were multiple members in a traveling party or if they were going on, say, a rock-climbing or bungee-jumping excursion, the costs would go up.

On average, travel insurance comes to about 5% to 10% of the trip cost. However, considering many of the plans reimburse up to 100% of the trip cost (or more) for disruptions like trip cancellation or interruption, it can be a worthwhile expense if something goes wrong.

It depends. Consider the following factors that might affect your decision: You’re young and healthy, all your bookings are refundable or cancelable without a penalty, your flights are nonstop, you’re not checking bags and a credit card you carry offers some travel protections . In that case, travel insurance might not be necessary.

On the other hand, if you prepaid a large chunk of money for a nonrefundable African safari, you’re going on a Caribbean cruise in the middle of a hurricane season or you’re going somewhere where the cost of health care is high, it’s not a bad idea to buy a travel insurance plan. Here’s how to find the best travel insurance coverage for you.

If you’re thinking of booking a trip and not planning to buy travel insurance, you may want to consider at least booking refundable airfare and not prepaying for hotel, rental car and activity reservations. That way, if something goes wrong, you can cancel without losing any money.

Selecting the best travel insurance policy comes down to your needs, concerns, preferences and budget.

As you book, take a few minutes to consider what most concerns you. Is it getting stranded because of flight trouble? Having the ability to cancel for any reason you see fit without losing money? Getting sick or injured right before departure and needing to postpone the trip? Injuring yourself or falling ill while overseas?

Ultimately, you want a plan that protects you, your money and the large investment in your trip — but doesn’t cost too much, either.

Medical coverage. If your priority is having adequate medical coverage abroad, you might want to look for plans with high limits for medical emergencies and medical evacuation.

Complex travel itinerary. If your itinerary has lots of flight connections, prepaid hotels and deposits for activities you can’t get back, prioritizing a plan with the best coverage for trip cancellations or interruptions may land at the top of your list.

Travel uncertainty. If you’re on the fence about a trip and have nonrefundable reservations, you may want to select a plan with a Cancel For Any Reason coverage option, which can help you recoup about 50% to 75% of the costs. This helps provide peace of mind, placing the decision on whether to travel entirely in your hands.

Car rentals. If you’re renting a car, a collision damage waiver is often worth looking into.

Methodology

We used the following factors to choose insurance providers to highlight:

Breadth of coverage: We looked at how many plans each company offered plus the range of their standard plans.

Depth of coverage: We considered two data points to get a sense of how much each company pays out for common travel issues — the maximum caps for trip cancellation and trip interruption claims.

Cost: By looking at the costs for basic coverage across multiple companies, we determined an average cost for shoppers to benchmark plan prices against.

Customizability: While standard plans can cover a lot of ground, sometimes you need something a little more personal.

No, it doesn’t necessarily get more expensive the longer you wait to purchase. However, as you put off buying insurance, you may lose access to potential plans and coverage options.

In general, buying travel insurance within a few days to two weeks of prepaying or making an initial deposit for your trip is your best bet. Assuming you’re not booking last-minute, this will provide you with access to the widest possible range of coverage options. It also helps prevent any medical conditions or storms that pop up between booking and buying a plan from ending up as excluded situations, which won’t be covered by your plan.

But, generally, many plans do allow you to buy coverage quite close to your departure date.

To get the most out of your travel insurance plan, buy it soon after making your initial prepayment or deposit to ensure you have access to the biggest menu of plans possible.

Select a plan that’s comprehensive enough to cover the travel scenarios you’re most concerned about or likely to encounter but not too expensive or laden with protections you’d never likely need.

Whatever your coverage, thoroughly review the plan so you understand what’s covered and what’s not, plus how to adhere to the plan’s rules for making a claim.

Travelers frequently use phrases like “trip insurance” and “travel insurance,” as well as “trip protection,” interchangeably, but they do mean different things, according to Stan Sandberg, founder of insurance comparison site TravelInsurance.com.

Trip insurance, or trip protection, generally refers to predeparture (or preevent) coverage if you need to cancel. You may see these plans sold by airlines, online travel agencies or even ticketed event sellers.

“You could refer to it as the portion that protects the investment in the trip,” Sandberg says.

A travel insurance plan typically includes that — plus more comprehensive benefits to protect you during your trip, from medical coverage to trip delay and lost baggage protections, and many more elements, depending on the plan.

Though travel insurance is typically not required for international trips, your personal circumstances will play a key role in whether it’s a good investment.

For instance, young, healthy travelers with few prepaid trip expenses embarking on a relatively risk-free trip may not see a need to buy a plan.

Older travelers with complicated itineraries who are visiting destinations where they could potentially fall ill or get injured — or who could encounter bad weather or some other disrupting factor along the way — may want to buy coverage.

Consider a few key questions:

How well would your health insurance plan cover you if you needed to visit a hospital overseas?

How much did you prepay for a hotel or rental car?

How much money would you be out if weather or some other flight issue derailed your itinerary?

Could you afford an unexpected night in a city where you have a connecting flight?

Do you already have a credit card that provides some travel protections?

Your answers to these questions can help you decide whether you need travel insurance for your international trip.

In general, buying travel insurance

within a few days to two weeks of prepaying or making an initial deposit

for your trip is your best bet. Assuming you’re not booking last-minute, this will provide you with access to the widest possible range of coverage options. It also helps prevent any medical conditions or storms that pop up between booking and buying a plan from ending up as excluded situations, which won’t be covered by your plan.

Is Annual Multi-Trip Insurance worth it?

Yes, Annual Multi-Trip Insurance can be worth it for frequent travellers. This type of insurance covers multiple trips within a specified time frame, usually one year. The cost-effectiveness of this insurance depends on the frequency and duration of your travels. Here are some factors to consider:

  • Frequency of travel: If you travel multiple times a year, an Annual Multi-Trip Insurance plan can be more cost-effective than purchasing a separate policy for each trip. Generally, Annual Multi-Trip Insurance offers cost savings compared to buying individual policies for each trip. It can be a convenient and economical option.
  • Coverage consistency: An annual plan provides consistent coverage for the entire year, which is beneficial if your travel plans change frequently.
  • Convenience: It eliminates the need to purchase insurance for each trip separately, saving you time and effort in booking.
  • Emergency medical coverage: Annual Multi-Trip Insurance often includes emergency medical coverage, providing financial protection for unexpected medical expenses during travel.

However, it's essential to carefully review the specific insurance policy's terms, conditions, and coverage limits to ensure it meets your travel needs. Factors such as trip duration, destinations, and types of coverage should be considered when determining whether Annual Multi-Trip Insurance is worth it for your circumstances.

Allianz's Annual Multi-Trip Insurance is a cost-effective and convenient solution for frequent travellers. This insurance plan, covering multiple trips within a year, proves advantageous for those with varying travel frequencies and durations. With potential cost savings and consistent coverage, Allianz simplifies the insurance process, eliminating the need for separate policies for each journey. The plan's comprehensive emergency medical coverage adds an extra layer of protection against unforeseen medical expenses during travels. Before choosing this option, reviewing Allianz's specific policy details is crucial, ensuring it aligns with individual travel needs and preferences for a worry-free and efficient travel insurance experience.

How does Annual Multi-Trip Insurance work?

Annual Multi-Trip Insurance, also known as Annual Travel Insurance or Annual Travel Cover, is a type of travel insurance that provides coverage for multiple trips within a specified period, usually one year. Here's how it generally works:

  • Policy duration : When you purchase an Annual Multi-Trip Insurance policy, it typically covers you for 12 months from the start date. You can take multiple trips during this time without purchasing separate insurance for each journey.
  • Trip duration limits : Each trip covered by the policy usually has a maximum duration limit. For example, at Allianz Travel, an annual multi-trip policy covers individual trips up to 90 days. Awareness of this limit is essential, as coverage may not apply beyond this specified duration.
  • Coverage : The insurance typically covers a range of common travel-related risks, including trip cancellations, interruptions, lost or delayed baggage, emergency medical expenses, and evacuation.
  • Geographical coverage : Annual Multi-Trip Insurance usually includes coverage for a or several geographical area(s), such as worldwide coverage. Be sure to choose a policy that aligns with your travel destinations.
  • Renewal : At the end of the 12 months, you may need to buy  a new policy to maintain coverage for the subsequent year.
  • Flexibility : This type of insurance is suitable for frequent travellers, providing flexibility and convenience by eliminating the need to purchase insurance for each trip.

It's crucial to carefully read and understand the terms and conditions of your specific policy. Pay attention to coverage limits, exclusions, specific trip duration and destination requirements. Certain high-risk activities may not be covered, so disclosing all relevant information is essential when purchasing insurance.

When considering Annual Multi-Trip Insurance, Allianz Travel is a trusted choice offering comprehensive coverage for frequent travellers. The 12-month policy duration allows multiple trips without the hassle of obtaining separate insurance each time. Allianz Travel's coverage spans common travel risks, including cancellations, baggage issues, medical emergencies, and evacuations. With geographical flexibility, you can choose coverage tailored to your travel destinations, whether worldwide or region-specific. Allianz's Annual Multi-Trip Insurance brings convenience and flexibility, making it an ideal choice for those who frequently embark on journeys. Before securing this coverage, carefully review Allianz's policy details to ensure it aligns with your travel needs.

What is the difference between Single Trip Insurance and Annual Multi-Trip Insurance?

Single Trip Insurance and Annual Multi-Trip Insurance are two travel insurance policies designed to cater to varying travel needs. Here are their key differences:

Coverage duration

  • Single Trip Insurance: Provides coverage for a specific trip with a defined start and end date. Once the trip concludes, the coverage ceases.
  • Annual Multi-Trip Insurance: Covers multiple trips within a specified period, usually 12 months from the policy's start date. Each trip has a maximum duration limit.

Frequency of travel

  • Single Trip Insurance: Ideal for individuals who travel infrequently or have planned a one-time trip.
  • Annual Multi-Trip Insurance: Suited for frequent travellers anticipating multiple trips within a year.

Cost-effectiveness

  • Single Trip Insurance: This can be cost-effective for individuals who travel occasionally or have irregular travel patterns.
  • Annual Multi-Trip Insurance: Typically more cost-effective for those who travel frequently, as it eliminates the need to purchase a new policy for each trip.

Convenience

  • Single Trip Insurance: Simple and straightforward, providing coverage for the specific trip for which it is purchased.
  • Annual Multi-Trip Insurance: Offers convenience for frequent travellers by providing continuous coverage for multiple trips without the need to purchase a new policy each time.

Maximum trip duration

  • Single Trip Insurance: Provides coverage for the entire duration of a single trip, which can range from a few days to 90 days, depending on the policy.
  • Annual Multi-Trip Insurance: Each trip covered by the policy has a maximum duration limit (e.g., 90 days), and coverage may not apply beyond this limit. However the policy works for subsequent trips below 90 days taken within the policy validity duration.

Geographical coverage

  • Single Trip Insurance: You can choose coverage for specific regions or worldwide, depending on your travel destination.
  • Annual Multi-Trip Insurance: Similar to Single Trip Insurance, the coverage can be tailored based on the geographical areas you plan to visit.

Choosing between Single Trip Insurance and Annual Multi-Trip Insurance depends on your travel habits and how frequently you plan to journey within a given year.

For a reliable and comprehensive solution to your travel insurance needs, consider Allianz Travel. Whether you opt for Single Trip Insurance or Annual Multi-Trip Insurance, Allianz provides tailored coverage for flexibility and convenience. When should I purchase Annual Multi-Trip Insurance?

Annual Multi-Trip Insurance is suitable for individuals who travel frequently and plan to take multiple trips within a specific period, usually a year. Here are some scenarios and considerations for when you should consider purchasing Annual Multi-Trip Insurance:

1. Frequent traveller

If you travel multiple times a year, whether for business or leisure, Annual Multi-Trip Insurance can be cost-effective compared to buying a separate insurance policy for each trip.

2. Cost savings

If the total cost of individual trip insurance policies for the year exceeds the cost of an Annual Multi-Trip Insurance plan, opting for the annual coverage can result in cost savings.

3. Convenience

If you prefer the convenience of having continuous coverage without the need to purchase insurance for each trip individually, an annual plan is a practical and time-saving solution.

4. Unpredictable travel plans

If your travel plans are unpredictable or subject to change, having an annual policy provides flexibility, ensuring you have coverage for any last-minute trips.

5. Business travel

Business travellers who frequently embark on short-duration trips throughout the year may find Annual Multi-Trip Insurance beneficial for consistent coverage.

6. Geographical flexibility

If you plan to travel to various destinations, including different regions or countries, an annual plan with wide geographical coverage can be more convenient than purchasing separate policies for each location.

7. Emergency medical coverage

If emergency medical coverage is a priority, Annual Multi-Trip Insurance often includes this feature, providing financial protection for unexpected medical expenses during your travels.

8. Family travel

If you’re part of a family that travels frequently together, an annual family travel insurance policy may be more economical than individual policies for each family member.

It's important to carefully review the terms and conditions of the Annual Multi-Trip Insurance policy you are considering. Consider factors such as maximum trip duration, coverage limits, geographical coverage, and any exclusions that may apply. This ensures the policy aligns with your travel habits and provides the necessary coverage for your needs.

Consider Allianz for a comprehensive and convenient solution to your travel insurance needs. Whether you are a frequent traveller, business professional, or part of a family that loves to explore, Allianz's Annual Multi-Trip Insurance offers cost-effective and flexible coverage. With a focus on providing continuous protection for multiple trips within a year, Allianz ensures you have the peace of mind you need throughout your journeys. The convenience of having consistent coverage, coupled with the potential for cost savings, makes Allianz a trusted choice for those with diverse and frequent travel plans.

Do I need to have a trip planned to purchase Annual Multi-Trip Insurance?

No, you don't necessarily need to plan a specific trip when purchasing Annual Multi-Trip Insurance. One of the advantages of this type of insurance is its flexibility, allowing you to be covered for multiple trips throughout the year, even if those trips are not pre-planned when purchasing the policy.

Here are a few points to consider:

1. Flexibility : Annual Multi-Trip Insurance provides coverage for a specified period, usually 12 months, irrespective of whether you have concrete travel plans at purchase.

2. Continuous coverage : Once you have the annual policy in place, you are covered for any eligible trips you take during the policy period, up to the maximum duration allowed for each trip.

3. Spontaneous travel : If you engage in spontaneous or last-minute travel, an Annual Multi-Trip Insurance policy ensures you are covered for unforeseen trips.

4. Consistent protection : The policy offers consistent protection, making it suitable for individuals whose travel plans evolve throughout the year.

5. Cost saving s: If you anticipate travelling multiple times within the year, purchasing Annual Multi-Trip Insurance can be cost-effective compared to buying separate policies for each trip.

While you don't need a specific trip planned when purchasing, it's important to provide accurate information about your travel habits, including the types of trips you typically take and the regions you plan to visit. This helps select an annual policy that aligns with your needs and ensures that you have adequate coverage for your travel activities throughout the policy period.

When flexibility meets comprehensive coverage, Allianz's Annual Multi-Trip Insurance emerges as the ideal choice. With Allianz, you don't need to have a specific trip planned at the time of purchase, allowing you the freedom to travel spontaneously or make last-minute decisions. This insurance offers continuous coverage for a specified period, usually 12 months, accommodating the evolving nature of your travel plans. Whether you're a frequent traveller or someone who embraces spontaneity, Allianz's Annual Multi-Trip Insurance provides consistent protection, ensuring you're covered for unforeseen trips and offering potential cost savings for multiple journeys within the year.

How long does Annual Multi-Trip Insurance last?

Annual Multi-Trip Insurance typically lasts 12 months from the policy's effective date. During these 12 months, you are covered for multiple trips, each with its maximum 90-day-duration limit. The coverage is continuous, allowing you to embark on multiple journeys without purchasing a new insurance policy for each trip.

Key points regarding the duration of Annual Multi-Trip Insurance:

1. Policy period: The insurance coverage begins on the date specified in the policy and lasts 12 months.

2. Multiple trips : You can take multiple trips within the 12 months covered by the policy.

3. Maximum trip duration : Each trip covered by the policy has a maximum duration limit. At Allianz, an annual policy cover trips up to 90 days each.

4. Renewal : At the end of the 12 months, you may need to renew the policy to continue enjoying coverage for the subsequent year.

It's important to review the terms and conditions of the specific Annual Multi-Trip Insurance policy you choose to understand the maximum duration allowed per trip and any other details related to coverage, geographical limits, and exclusions. Additionally, remember that the policy's effectiveness is contingent on the renewal process if you wish to maintain coverage beyond the initial 12-month period.

For a seamless travel experience throughout the year, consider Allianz's Annual Multi-Trip Insurance, offering 12 months of continuous coverage. With this comprehensive plan, you can embark on multiple journeys without the hassle of purchasing a new insurance policy for each trip. Each trip the policy covers has its maximum duration limit, ensuring flexibility to suit your travel needs. At the end of the 12 months, simply renew the policy for uninterrupted coverage in the subsequent year.

Can I buy Annual Multi-Trip Insurance for my family?

Yes, many insurance providers offer family plans for Annual Multi-Trip Insurance. These plans are designed to cover all immediate family members under a single policy. Here are some key points:

1. Family coverage : Family plans typically cover you, your spouse and dependent children. The age limit for dependent children may vary by insurance provider.

2. Cost-effective : Opting for a family plan can be cost-effective compared to purchasing individual policies for each family member. It streamlines the insurance process and often offers a more economical solution.

3. Coverage details : Ensure that the family plan provides coverage for the types of trips you anticipate taking and that it meets the needs of all family members.

4. Trip duration limits : Pay attention to the maximum duration allowed per trip under the family plan. Each trip may have a specified limit.

5. Renewal : Like individual Annual Multi-Trip Insurance, family plans typically have 12 months. You may need to renew the policy at the end of this period to maintain coverage.

6. Family definition : Insurance providers may have specific criteria for defining a family, so it's important to check and ensure that the plan covers all individuals you consider part of your family.

7. Age limits : Be aware of any age restrictions for family members covered under the plan, especially dependent children.

When considering Annual Multi-Trip Insurance for your family, it's advisable to compare different insurance providers, review the terms and conditions of the policies, and select a plan that best suits your family's travel needs. Additionally, disclosing accurate information about your family members is essential to ensure everyone receives the appropriate coverage.

What if I stay abroad for over three months?

Travel insurance is not designed to replace health insurance. If you plan to travel more than 3 months in a row aborad, you may need to get an international health insurance.

Travel insurance is only for short trips (less than 90 days) and annual multi-trip policies make no exception.

Here's what you should consider:

1. Trip duration limit : Check the maximum duration allowed per trip under your Annual Multi-Trip Insurance policy. At Allianz, the maximum trip duration is 90 days

2. No Extension option : Once a trip has started, you will not be able to extend your travel insurance. That is why you need to know the reasons of your travel.

3. Policy terms : Review the terms and conditions of your specific insurance policy to understand how the insurer handles situations where a trip exceeds the maximum duration specified in the policy.

It's crucial to communicate with your insurance provider and understand your options. If your stay abroad will exceed the maximum trip duration allowed by your Annual Multi-Trip Insurance, discuss your situation with the insurer to explore possible solutions, such as extending coverage or obtaining additional insurance for the extended period. Remember that adherence to the policy terms is essential to ensure coverage and avoid potential complications in the event of a claim.

Allianz Tavel is a reliable choice when staying abroad for an extended period with Annual Multi-Trip Insurance. Allianz clarifies the limits of its travel insurance in policy documents, ensuring you're well-informed.

Travel Insurance- multiple countries

I am looking into Allianz travel insurance for a 14-day Best of Europe Rick Steves tour. Allianz asks for a single country as a destination, but the RS tours travel to multiple countries. It seems that the majority of the time will be spent in Italy, but will the policy cover events in other countries as well?

I had this question also when I first purchased travel insurance years ago. I called the company and they said to enter the country in which you will spend the majority of your time. Yes, they would cover the other countries we visited. That being said, be sure to call Allianz to confirm this information.

It's insurance, so don't trust them too much. Get something in writing indicating they acknowledge all the places you'll be travelling.

I had to file a claim recently and they wanted to see my boarding passes and train tickets to prove I was actually there. Because of course I could fake a receipt from a Vienna doctor and convince Amex to process the charge ...

Interesting in this day and age of travel and ease of travel they only allow one destination. I would concur and write them by email to get clarification or maybe use squaremouth and check out other agencies for peace of mind.

We routinely buy travel insurance for multiple countries as cruise itineraries almost always involve several countries. This is very common and absolutely not a problem. They do only ask you to name just one country. I have always been told to just list the starting point or the country we will be spending the most time in. I do make it clear in my e-mails exactly where we are going so as to have it in writing because the only people I trust less than politicians are insurance companies.

Agree with LetsJustGo. Always have something in writing.

When you click on the box for country on the Allianz website, it shows this:

If your trip involves multiple destinations, please enter the destination where you’ll be spending the most time. It is not necessary to list all destinations on your policy.

So yes, according to Allianz it will cover multiple countries. In my experience, Travelguard does the same thing. You just enter one country. They don’t need a full itinerary. If you have any doubts, call them.

We just bought annual trip insurance from Allianz for our RS eastern France tour in June. It seemed to be a better deal than their regular insurance. I called and it will cover every trip we take in the US and international. Hopefully, we won't need to use it.

Multi-Trip Travel Insurance

What is allianz multi‑trip travel insurance.

If you travel frequently, chances are you’d prefer not to take out travel insurance for each individual trip. That's where our Multi-Trip Travel Insurance comes in. Multi-Trip is a 12-month plan that offers all the benefits of our Comprehensive or Domestic covers for multiple trips within Australia and overseas 1 . Our Multi-Trip Plan is available to travellers who are aged under 75 years at the time the Certificate of Insurance is issued.

You pay one premium for all return trips from Australia that you make in a 12-month period. Simply choose each trip destination as well as the trip duration that will cover your longest journey: 15, 30 or 45 days. See the Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) for all terms, conditions, exclusions, limits and applicable sub-limits that may apply.

What our Multi-Trip Travel Insurance offers

  • The compensation (including legal costs) awarded against you
  • Any reasonable legal costs incurred by you for settling or defending a claim made against you, providing you have approval in writing from Allianz Global Assistance before incurring these costs
  • Accidental Death 1 If, during the period of cover for your journey:
  • a) you’re injured and due to that injury you die within 12 months of it occurring; or
  • b) something you’re travelling on or in disappears, sinks or crashes and your body isn’t found within 12 months and you’re presumed dead;

we’ll pay the benefit limit payable under the Accidental Death benefit to your estate.

  • Permanent Disability 1,3,4 If you’re injured during the period of cover for your journey, and
  • a) due to that injury, you suffer permanent disability within 12 months of the injury occurring; and
  • b) your permanent disability continues for at least 12 consecutive months and at the expiry of that period, in the opinion of an appropriate medical specialist, is beyond hope of improvement;

we’ll pay the benefit limit payable under the Permanent Disability benefit to you.

  • Cancellation 1 If during the period of cover, your journey is cancelled, rescheduled or shortened because of circumstances that weren’t expected or intended by you and are outside your control, we’ll reimburse you:

  • For the value of frequent flyer points, air miles, loyalty card points, redeemable vouchers or similar schemes lost as a result of cancelling the related services, but only if you can’t recover your loss in any other way.

You can choose different levels of cover when you buy your policy.

Ready to get started, frequently asked questions.

You may consider buying Multi-Trip Travel Insurance if you travel often and find it more convenient to buy a policy that covers multiple trips over a 12-month period instead of buying a travel insurance policy for each trip.

Note: If you take a trip longer than the nominated maximum journey period of either 15, 30 or 45 days, you won’t be covered for the duration of your trip that falls after your maximum journey period.

Our Multi-Trip Plan is available to travellers who are aged under 75 years at the time the Certificate of Insurance is issued.

Allianz Multi-Trip is designed to cover the same benefits as Comprehensive Travel Insurance (when travelling overseas) or Domestic Travel Insurance (for trips in Australia only) but your policy provides cover for multiple journeys over a 12-month period. You must choose the maximum journey period that will be sufficient to cover your longest journey. You can choose from one of these maximum journey periods: 15 days, 30 days or 45 days.

Basic Travel Insurance is designed to cover overseas emergency medical and hospital expenses, overseas emergency assistance including repatriation, and personal liability. You can compare our Travel Insurance inclusions and get quotes at our Compare Cover page .

Our Multi-Trip and Basic Plans are only available to travellers who are aged under 75 years at the time the Certificate of Insurance is issued. However, our Comprehensive and Domestic Plans are available to travellers of all ages.

Our Comprehensive Travel Insurance has a general exclusion, with limited exceptions, against epidemics and pandemics. That means we don’t cover claims that arise from or are related to an epidemic or pandemic.

However, you’re covered under selected benefits for trip cancellation or overseas medical emergencies if you or your travel companion are positively diagnosed as suffering a sickness recognised as an epidemic or pandemic (such as COVID-19 2 ) during your period of cover.

Find out more about our COVID-19 benefits and what we offer.

If your trip will consist of snow activities, ocean cruising or adventure activities you may want to consider buying a Snow, Cruise or Adventure Pack. 1

For an additional premium, these packs are designed to cover additional activities that aren’t automatically included in our policies.

You must be aged under 75 years at the time the Certificate of Insurance is issued in order to buy the Snow Pack and the Adventure Pack. You won’t have cover under Permanent Disability and Personal Liability benefits for any claims arising from, or in any way connected with your participation in any of the activities listed as covered adventure activities in the Adventure Pack or your participation in snow sport activities.

Our Snow Pack is designed to cover in certain circumstances, for loss or damage to your snow sport equipment and cost of re-hire as well as coverage for piste closure, bad weather and avalanche closure.

The Cruise Pack is designed to cover, subject to the terms of the policy, medical and hospital expenses if you’re injured or become sick on a cruise, ship to shore evacuation if required for emergency medical treatment, plus cover for cabin confinement, pre-paid shore excursion cancellation, marine rescue diversion, and formal attire that has been damaged, lost, stolen or delayed. 4

Allianz Multi-Trip Travel Insurance automatically includes cover for a wide range of activities such as golf or snorkelling. You can also buy an Adventure Pack if you’re planning on participating in adventure activities such as motorbike riding 1 , moped riding 1 , abseiling, deep sea fishing or zip lining. Full details of the insurance cover, limits, excesses, definitions and exclusions are listed in the PDS.

Note: If you take a domestic trip longer than the maximum nominated period of either 15, 30 or 45 days, you won’t be covered for the duration of your trip that falls after your maximum travel period.

If you’re undertaking a domestic cruise and buy the Cruise Pack, cover is provided for on-board medical. Details are listed in the Product Disclosure Statement.

Why Trust Us

U.S. News evaluates ratings, data and scores of more than 50 travel insurance companies from comparison websites like TravelInsurance.com, Squaremouth and InsureMyTrip, plus renowned credit rating agency AM Best, in addition to reviews and recommendations from top travel industry sources and consumers to determine the Best Travel Insurance for Europe.

Table of Contents

  • Allianz Travel Insurance
  • Travelex Insurance Services

You almost certainly will want travel insurance for Europe, mostly because the high cost for international trips is worth protecting against travel delays and trip cancellations. Since your U.S. medical coverage will not apply overseas, you also need international health insurance that covers surprise medical expenses and medical evacuation.

If you're searching for the best Europe travel insurance that money can buy, consider the following plans and all they have to offer.

Frequently Asked Questions

Most people need travel health insurance at a bare minimum when traveling to European destinations like France, Italy or Switzerland, as well as additional countries inside and outside of the Schengen area. After all, U.S. health insurance plans do not provide coverage for medical emergencies overseas, and the same is true for government health plans like Medicare. Check out our article on whether your health insurance covers international travel .

Other benefits built into Europe travel insurance plans can also protect the money that's been spent on airfare, hotel stays, Europe cruises and tours. For example, travelers can benefit from having coverage for trip cancellation, trip delays, lost or delayed baggage, and more.

Every travel insurance policy is unique, so you'll want to read over individual travel insurance plans to see what they protect against. That said, the bulk of travel insurance plans for trips to Europe provide the following coverages:

  • Trip cancellation
  • Trip interruption
  • Travel delays
  • Lost luggage reimbursement
  • Baggage delay coverage
  • Medical expenses
  • Emergency medical evacuation
  • Rental car damage

Some travel insurance plans also offer additional or optional coverage for sports equipment or sports equipment delays, missed connections, accidental death and dismemberment (AD&D), adventure sports and more.

Some visitors to countries in the Schengen area are required to have a visa for short stays that can last for up to 90 days within a timeline of up to 180 days. However, this is not the case for American citizens, who can stay in Europe for up to 90 days at a time without meeting specific visa requirements.

The U.S. Department of State also notes that American citizens who want to stay in Europe for more than 90 days should reach out to the country they plan on visiting to inquire about their visa process.

If you live in a country that requires a Schengen visa, you are required to purchase Schengen visa insurance that pays for overseas medical expenses. This coverage must provide at least 30,000 euros in protection against medical expenses that result from hospitalization, emergency treatment and repatriation of remains in the case of accident or death.

What is single trip travel insurance?

If you’re heading on a holiday this year, then Single Trip travel insurance can help protect you if something goes wrong. You can be covered from the moment you purchase your holiday to the second you get back home.

Below is some information about our insurance products, for which Terms and Conditions apply. Please visit the policy information hub for full details.

No matter where you’re travelling to, travel insurance is just as essential as your passport and your boarding pass. This is because it helps cover the cost if something goes wrong; if you need to cancel your trip before you go, for example, or if you suffer an injury or illness while you’re away, you’ll be protected.

If you’re only going on one holiday this year, then Single Trip holiday insurance is the best option for you. You can get cover for the duration of your trip (up to 180 days), whether you’re holidaying in the UK , Europe , USA or somewhere else abroad.

Looking to travel a few times this year?

Frequently asked questions.

Depending on how often you travel, you should decide between taking out a Single Trip or Annual muti-trip travel  insurance policy. Single Trip holiday insurance is the best form of cover if you only plan on going away once in the near future.

But if you’re thinking of going away twice or more in a calendar year, it may be worth choosing an Annual travel insurance policy. You’ll need insurance each time you go away, and it can be cheaper and less time consuming to take out one Annual policy, rather than multiple Single Trip policies.

When you take out Single Trip travel insurance, you can travel to multiple destinations, as long as your trip does not last longer than 180 days. Whether you’re looking for Single Trip worldwide travel insurance or Single Trip travel insurance for multiple countries in Europe , we have you covered. You can tailor our policies to suit your plans by selecting just the countries you are travelling to.

Please note that you will not be covered if you travel to a country or region that the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office has advised against all travel or against all but essential travel.

If you’re heading on holiday to Europe, Single Trip travel insurance is still important. The European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) or the new Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) give you some basic medical cover, but you’ll need Single Trip holiday insurance too. Although both your EHIC or GHIC entitle you to either free or reduced medical costs (depending on how the health care system works in a particular country), it won’t cover you for everything. For example, if you have to be treated in a private hospital or need to be repatriated back to the UK in an emergency , you won’t be covered with an EHIC or GHIC card.

If you fall ill and need to pay for any medical care whilst you’re away, it could cost you thousands of pounds. But, Single Trip travel insurance will help cover these costs.

Despite the UK leaving the EU in January 2021, the EHIC remains valid for UK holders until the expiry date of their card. However, once your EHIC has expired you will have to apply for a Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC). The GHIC will take place of the EHIC and can be applied for and ordered now if you don't already own an EHIC.

  • From 5th May 2021, we will no longer be able to offertravel insurance policies to cover people's pre-existing medical conditions. This is only a temporary measure while we make improvements to the booking engine of our website. Please keep an eye on the Allianz Assistance website in the future so you are aware when we are able to offer this additional cover again. Policies purchased before 5th May 2021 aren't affected and your cover won't change.

What does travel insurance for singapore cover, can i tailor my travel insurance for singapore, what does travel insurance for singapore exclude, how much does travel insurance for singapore cost, how can i compare travel insurance for singapore, frequently asked questions (faqs).

Singapore has long been a holiday favourite for Australians, either as a stop-over city on the way to Europe or the Middle East or as base for exploring Asia. According to the latest figures from data portal, Statista, 566,000 Australians visited the country in 2022.

If you’re also planning to visit, travel insurance for Singapore can safeguard your trip against a number of potential mishaps, such as falling ill while away, losing your luggage and belongings or even needing to cancel the trip before it’s even begun. Singapore is a safe country, but the cost of medical care is high.  Find out more about how travel insurance for Singapore works below.

There are three main types of travel insurance policy for Singapore. These are:

  • Single trip: for a one-off trip in the space of 12 months to Singapore
  • Annual multi-trip : for more than one trip in the space of 12 months to Singapore or various destinations. This type of cover can work out more cost-effective than buying multiple single trip policies but not always so it’s best to compare both types of cover.
  • Long-stay/backpacker : for an extended stay in Singapore, of typically 60 or 90 days, or 12 or 18 months. Cover for 24 months may be available, from certain providers.

When applying for travel insurance online, you’ll first be asked to enter your holiday destination. Depending on the insurer, you’ll need to click on Singapore, Asia or Worldwide travel excluding the US and nearby destinations such as Mexico, the Caribbean, Canada and Greenland. The latter option excludes a part of the world where medical costs are the highest, which in turn, bumps up the cost of cover. If you’re also planning to travel to the US, for example, there are separate worldwide policies that include it as a destination.

Insurers usually offer at least two or more types of travel insurance policy from basic or comprehensive cover and anything in between. Comprehensive policies offer the highest cover levels and widest range of benefits.

A key component of all travel insurance policies is emergency medical cover. You’ll find a comprehensive policy for Singapore will often offer an unlimited amount.

The standard of medical facilities and care in Singapore is similar to, or higher than in Australia, and the cost often much higher, so medical cover can prove a vital resource should you fall ill, or get injured, while away.

Note that in the case of an emergency, you’ll likely need to pay up-front first, and then reclaim the costs from your insurer, or confirm payment from your insurer with a hospital before it will provide treatment.

As standard, travel insurance for Singapore can also cover repatriation and emergency rescue, in severe medical cases, the loss or theft of your baggage and belongings and trip cancellation if you can no longer travel for reasons such as falling ill, suffering a bereavement or losing your job.

They will also likely include an array of other forms of protection, providing the most at comprehensive level. This includes cover for lost or stolen money, passports and documentation, missed departures, online fraud, and travel delay. The types of cover on offer, and cover limits, will vary between providers. You can find exactly what a policy includes in its product disclosure statement (PDS), which is usually found on an insurer’s website.

There are a number of ways you can ensure your policy fits your needs. Many insurers offer optional add-ons that you can purchase if you need specialised cover. These include insurance for gadgets (such as a smartphone or laptop), a cruise and playing golf.

If you’re thinking of participating in more high-octane activities, check your policy’s PDS. Many cover around 100 or so sports automatically. Cover for what an insurer classes as high-risk activities, such as skydiving, bungee jumping, outdoor rock climbing, and activities requiring a set of wheels, such as quad biking, may require purchasing an additional ‘sports pack’ for your policy.

While reading through a policy’s PDS, it’s crucial to also take note of any limitations of cover. These can differ between policies, but generally you can expect most insures to refuse claims relating to a pre-existing condition. This is a medical condition you had before taking out the policy. The insurer may not cover such conditions, or may refuse your claim if you did not declare your condition on applying for the policy.

An insurer is also unlikely to accept claims for an injury caused by taking part in a sport or activity where you did not wear the appropriate safety gear, such as a helmet, knee pads or a harness. Claims resulting from disorderly behaviour or being under the influence of drink or drugs will also likely be rejected.

It’s best to regularly check government advice for your destination, which it publishes on its Smartraveller website. This includes warnings about natural disasters, terrorism threats and pandemics. Visiting Singapore, or a part of the country, if the government puts it on its “do not travel” list, could invalidate your policy.

The amount you’ll need to pay for your travel insurance policy will depend on a range of factors. An insurer will consider your holiday destination, associated costs when travelling there and the length of time you’ll be travelling.

The price of a policy can rise for mature travellers and those with pre-existing conditions, as insurers view these travellers as more likely to claim on their policy.

To provide an idea of how much travel insurance for Singapore can cost, we ran quotes on the sites of the insurers we’ve rated the top five for travel insurance.

We used the profile of a family of four, aged 42, 40, 14 and 12, spending 13 to 26 May in the country, and assumed they have no pre-existing conditions, (although these providers do offer cover for pre-existing conditions should you need it).

We found basic cover ranged from around $106 to $202, while comprehensive cover started at around $241, with the most expensive policy costing just under $304.

Before choosing a policy, it’s important to shop around. An easy way to do this is to run quotes on the websites of various insurers and compare factors such as the type of cover a policy includes and cover levels against price.

To help you with your search, we’ve conducted some research and found our pick of the best comprehensive travel insurance policies .

Is travel insurance for Singapore worth it?

While travel insurance for Singapore isn’t mandatory, it can be considered a travel essential if you have no other means of covering emergency costs while away.

Emergency medical fees can easily stack up to thousands of dollars alone, and without travel insurance in place, you would have to cover them out of pocket. Travel insurance also can cover a number of eventualities that we often fail to consider, such as an airline, transport company, or accommodation provider going bust.

What is ‘excess’ in insurance?

An excess is a set amount you’ll be expected to pay on each approved claim. It’s usually levied per person on the policy, per event, per claim, but you can check the PDS for the specifics concerning your insurer. You usually can pick from a range of excess amounts, from $50 to $250 on average, when taking out a policy.

The more you choose to pay in excess, the lower your policy premium—the cost of your policy—typically will be, while paying less in excess will raise the cost. An excess is usually deducted from a claim amount, so you won’t need to pay for it out of pocket. However, it’s still crucial that you make sure it’s affordable.

Can I buy a policy while I’m in Singapore?

Some providers won’t cover a holiday if it’s already started. Others may cover you, but apply a waiting period of around 72 hours before you can claim.

The best time to take out travel insurance is as soon as you’ve booked your holiday, as you’ll be immediately covered for trip cancellation. Insurers are highly unlikely to consider claims resulting from something that happened before you took out the policy.
