If you’re going on a Caribbean, Bahamas or any warm weather cruise, there’s nothing more stylish and comfortable than a dress. My not so secret “secret”, is that many of my favorite resort style dresses are from Amazon.

There are long dresses, short dresses, sleeveless dresses and those with longer sleeves. I especially appreciate finding affordable dresses that are made with a wrinkle resistant fabric – perfect for cruise vacations.

I’ve included my favorite cruise dresses and swimsuit cover ups from Amazon, and updated this with my latest finds from a recent Amazon fashion haul. Scroll to the bottom for my best purchases of shoes, handbags, carry-ons and travel accessories.

Cruise Wear and Dresses from Amazon

If you’ve seen some of my other cruise outfit posts you’ll recognize some popular dress favorites. I still love and wear these.

However, I was recently on vacation in Florida for 10 days before my cruise on Celebrity Beyond, and added some new dresses that were also perfect for a tropical beach vacation .

For reference, I’m 5’2″ and about 130-135 pounds (these days) and all dresses shown are size small.

1. Ladies Criss-cross Halter Top Dress with Pockets

I wore this halter style dress on my recent Sun Princess cruise and received so many compliments. The material is very comfortable and it packs very easily.

I often wear a tan low heel sandal with my dresses. This style is versatile and can be worn with a nice shorts or any cruise outfit.

2. Blue & White Off Shoulder Sundress

This blue & white flowing sundress is great to wear both day and evening on a cruise or on a beach vacation.

I wore this dress to a lovely pre-cruise lunch at Gianna’s the Former Versace Mansion in Miami (worth going!).

3. Casual Maxi Dress

I love the blue color of this long maxi dress . However, it’s available in many other vibrant colors as well. My favorite part is how comfortable it is – it even makes a good swimsuit cover up for a beach day.

4. Casual Halter Dress

This casual short halter dress is so easy to wear for cruises and beach vacations. The material is very comfortable and packs so well, without wrinkling.

I bought it in blue, however, it’s available in gorgeous green and pink patterns, as well as solid colors.

10. Sleeveless Jumpsuit Romper

I was so impressed with this comfortable and casual jumpsuit romper that I wore it twice on a recent cruise! Great for dinners at specialty restaurants or the main dining room.

14. Long Black Sleeveless Evening Dress

This long sleeveless evening dress is perfect for cruise formal nights , when many people still “dress up”, but don’t necessarily want to pack a formal evening gown.

This long spaghetti strap sundress has a silhouette that is very forgiving, if you know what I mean. I actually purchased it in white as well, and I love it.

I do have to warn you, I bought the orange one after loving it on Amazon. However, it was just a little too bright for my liking and I returned it.

I’m a fan of a comfortable short dress that can be worn on shore excursions or over a bathing suit on sea days. This boho style dress gets amazing reviews on Amazon and is available in sizes small through XX-large.

I’m sometimes asked how I can wear dresses on a cruise ship due to the ocean breeze. I admit I’ll almost always have a bathing suit under my dress during the day when outdoors. Other cruisers have said they wear short bicycle shorts.

Final Thoughts on Amazon Cruise Wear & Dresses

There are a few places I buy my cruise wear and dresses, from department stores to beach side shops on occasion. However, I over the last few years I’ve bought a lot of my favorite pieces on Amazon.

Beyond the fact that they’re usually a good price, I love to be able to read many reviews and see photos of real people wearing the outfits.

The cruise dresses in this post are some of my favorites, and ones that I get asked about on my YouTube videos, social media posts, and occasionally in real life ;-).

No matter what you wear on a cruise, the most important thing is to feel good. My personal belief is that everyone looks good on a cruise!

The best lightweight, easy-care women’s travel dresses

As an over 60 woman, I plan my travel wardrobe around classic, easy-care items. I take inspiration from the French style of dressing, focusing on solid colors and a classic look in high quality pieces. I accent these with colorful scarves, jackets, and jewelry. A dress fits perfectly into this capsule. Designing your travel style around a simple dress is a great way to pack light and look great! I’ve tested some of the best women’s travel dresses and present my favorites here.

Why pack a dress for travel?

I’m not your typical dress person. At home you’re more likely to find me in a great pair of jeans or workout wear. But when I’m planning a trip, I want to be ready for anything – museum visits, evenings out, and lots of walking. For me, one of the best options is a travel dress! On cruises, a dress is always on the list. (We don’t book anything that requires formal wear. It’s just not our thing.) On an active adventure where you’re in hiking or cycling clothes by day, it’s nice to have an option for something soft and pretty at night. And in a stretch, a dress can be worn as nightwear! That’s where dresses for travel come in!

As a woman over 60, I began traveling IN the sixties. My Dad wore three piece suits, and my mom and I wore dresses. Does that make me a travel dress expert?? No, but it does give me an appreciation for the functionality of dresses.

What makes a great travel dress?

Any piece that makes its way into our bag has to earn its place. Dresses are no exception. Here are our criteria for the perfect travel dress:

1. Packability – lightweight, wrinkle resistant

2. Versatility – I don’t pack anything that I can’t wear more than once. Clothing that has more than one good option is the best way to pack light. Choose a casual dress that can go from daytime touring to evenings out with an accessory or two. A dress that’s convertible gets extra points!

3. Low Maintenance/Ease of Care – who has time for doing laundry on vacation? A sink wash and air dry are usually the most we do on vacation.

4. Sustainable Quality – don’t be fooled by fast fashion. Invest in well made, classic items from ethical companies. Not only is this best for the planet, but it’ll save you money in the long run.

5. Comfort and Pleasure – (Probably the most important yet often forgotten criteria) Do I like how I feel in this dress? Does it work for my body type? Does it fit my personal style? Do I enjoy wearing it?

Choose your color, a dress style you like, and fabric that travels well

Color . The foundation of the French woman’s style is the little black dress. This staple piece is simple yet classy and never goes out of fashion. When creating a French-inspired travel wardrobe , I start with a solid color dress – the base palette – and add color and patterns with other pieces and accessories. Parisian women may favor black as their base, but you should choose what’s best for you, and your skin tone. Navy blue, wine, or dark gray can be more flattering to women over 60. They certainly are for me.

Style . Your choice will depend on your signature style and your destination. Sleeveless styles are great for hot climates, and will work just as well in cold weather when you add layers! But some ladies prefer long sleeves. And some love maxi dresses! (though maxis will take up more luggage space!) Go with what makes you comfortable and what flatters your best features.

Fabric . To earn its place in your bag the dress (and every item really!) has to be lightweight and easy to care for. This is where the fabric choice comes in. For example:

• Cotton is heavy, retains odors, and takes forever to dry.
• Linen is wonderful, but wrinkles can be frustrating.
• Synthetics are very lightweight, but can retain odors.

For ease of care and sustainability we recommend choosing natural fibers such as bamboo, Tencel, and wool for your travel clothing.

Bamboo is quickly becoming a popular material for travel clothing. It’s sustainable and odor resistant.

Merino wool has a natural warmth and resiliency not found in other textiles. Merino sheep, bred originally in Spain, have ultrafine wool which doesn’t provoke the itchy reaction some people experience with wool. AND it’s naturally odor resistant. That means you can wear a merino wool item over and over again, with only an overnight airing out!

Our Top Pick for General Travel & Versatility:

Wool& Merino Wool Dresses

Rowena swing dress, price: $138 USD

• Packability: 11 oz., wrinkle resistant.
• Versatility: simple swing dress, but can be styled as a top or tunic
• Ease of Care: fabric is 78% ultrasoft merino wool and 22% nylon
• Quality: very well made
• Comfort and Pleasure: temperature regulating, very comfortable, and has pockets!

I discovered Wool&, a small Oregon company producing merino wool clothing, through a Facebook ad. To prove the durability and natural odor resistance of merino wool, the company challenged people to wear their dress for 100 days straight. (I can’t imagine they expected this challenge to be so popular or to inspire an online community of women sharing the ups and downs of daily life over 100 days! No doubt the kindest group on social media!) Needless to say, given my interest in merino wool clothing, I was intrigued.

I base my capsule wardrobe on my favorite color, navy blue, so I opted for the Wool& signature item, the Rowena swing dress in marine blue. It’s a wonderful rich blue and I’m thrilled with the color. The dress has a boat neckline which is very flattering (and protective in the sunshine). As this is a swing dress, the body of the dress is loose, flowy, and flattering to my body shape. The material is light and lends itself to dozens of styling tricks and outfit ideas shared by the Facebook community. (There are many different colors available for this and other Wool& dresses)

My Wool& Review: Is this the best dress for traveling?

For the first month of the challenge, I played with the dress. I shopped my closet, pulling out long neglected items to pair with the dress. It was fun being creative with a simple piece of clothing, and truly surprising to pull out the dress each morning to find it as fresh as the day it arrived !

Then I got serious and began testing the dress for travel. I limited myself to a small capsule and worked on different outfits for different travel scenarios. First I wore the dress to my grandchild’s christening, and then another granddaughter’s lacrosse game. I wore it during zoom meetings, neighborhood clean-ups, and even for bike rides. The Wool& Rowena came through every time.

I had two opportunities to travel during this time – once to NYC for a fun weekend, and once to Texas for a sad event. The dress became my nightgown in Texas and gave me comfort.

Ease of Care: I aired out the dress every night – flipped it inside out and hung it over a bar. I sink-washed the dress six times and washed it in the washer once just to test durability. (I did use a lingerie bag) Day 100 the dress looked as fresh as on day 1.

Wool& offers several other travel dresses with pockets, including french terry dresses like the Sierra, a sleeveless option that’s very popular with travelers, the Everett, a tunic length sweater dress, and the Willow, a 3/4 sleeve swing dress with a V-neck.

Merino wool dresses are also offered by Icebreaker and Smartwool. Both brands produce quality goods so I’d feel confident ordering one of these if you find a style that suits you!

Amazon carries merino wool clothing at a more affordable price. I haven’t tried any of these so can’t speak to the quality. Let me know if you recommend them!

Best for a Special Event While Traveling

Chico’s Travelers Collection – dresses

• Price: ~$100-109 USD
• Packability: wrinkle resistant
• Versatility: n/a
• Ease of Care: machine or sink wash
• Fabric: 96% acetate, 4% elastane. From website: Our Travelers Classic collection contains Eastman Naia™, a sustainable cellulose fiber derived from wood pulp.
• Comfort and Pleasure: stylish, and flattering. Fabric has a bit of stretch for extra comfort

These packable travel dresses would be perfect for date nights, a destination wedding or afternoon tea party . Chico’s designs these dresses for all but I think the dresses, with their simple lines and great style, appeal especially to mature women. I like the mid-length pencil skirt look, but Chico’s also has cocktail dresses.

I don’t own any of these gorgeous dresses above because I have another Chico’s dress, bought 10 years ago, that still looks great! It’s a floral print and always in my luggage if I want to add a beautiful dress to my bag!

Our Favorite Convertible Travel Dresses

Origami by Diane Kroe

I’ve been a customer of Diane Kroe Designs for many years. I love the versatility of the collection. The Origami is one of my favorites. Usually I wear it as a top with skinny jeans or white pants, but I love having the option to wear it as a dress when traveling. This piece is great for older women travelers. The shape and drape are stylish and forgiving.

The main thing about convertible clothing is the style options while traveling. I’ve packed this dress specifically for special events but reached for it later in the trip as a light layer.

Best Dress for Sun Protection

Best of the rest: more suggestions for travel dresses

Athleta is one of my favorite brands for comfortable travel-friendly pants. I haven’t had the chance to try any of their dresses, but they offer several cute – short and sporty – dresses. You’ll find similar dresses at TitleNine.

For hard-working dresses suitable to many overseas trips check out Travelsmith, Magellan Travel Catalog, Lands End, L.L. Bean, and Orvis. These classic travel clothing companies will often have something that fits our easy-care, lightweight, wrinkle-free standards.

An option often offered in travel dresses is a reversible dress – pattern on one side and solid on the other. This might work for you, but I donated mine as it was too heavy. Some reversible dresses, like mine, are actually a two layer dress (a black sheath inside a patterned sheath). Thus the dress is heavier than a single layer dress.

A variant of the reversible dress that I do like is a dress with two necklines. Basically you can wear the dress back or front depending on the neckline you want. I love my Wool& Summer midi dress which has a high neckline and a v-neck neckline. This actually does give versatility to my travel wardrobe!

Have I convinced you to pack a dress for your travel?

Some last thoughts. The right dress can be endlessly useful during your travels. Wear it to a nice dinner? of course! But you can also wear it when you’re on a bus tour, for a hike in the mountains, and even sometimes as a workout tunic over exercise tights. (believe me. I’ve done it several times!)

Look in your closet first to see if there’s a dress that’ll be versatile, stylish, and easy care for your trip. If you need to buy a new dress find one that you can see wearing several times on your travels. Take some time before you leave to try the dress on, and play with accessories. That’s the best time to see if the dress deserves a place in your travel capsule wardrobe .

I’m about to embark on the Wool& 100 day challenge, and this post has me excited about all the possibilities! I’ve been interested in capsule wardrobes for a while. This might be my moment!

Oh my goodness! All the yesses!!!! I’ve done the challenge (in a Ro!) as well and am a full on convert to not only a merino wool fan but it has affirmed my love, desire, and need for a capsule wardrobe for every day and more.

I am finally getting to travel again soon and my Wool& dresses are all I’m planning on taking for core outfit pieces!

So, I have to ask, is the merino wool cool to wear? I am at the age where I am wearing t-shirts when everyone else is bundled up!

Yes! At least that’s my experience. The dress I purchased was long sleeved, and would not be ideal for a woman who’s usually hot. I have since purchased a sleeveless and short sleeved dress. Both wonderful on hot days.

Well I’ll definitely be reconsidering packing dresses in the future. Thanks!

I’ve just purchased a SmartWool sleeveless dress for a trip to Italy, but don’t know about shoes. Was planning to take only athletic shoes for comfort but they don’t look good with the dress. Suggestions?

Hi Joy, I use a scarf ring/loop I purchased from Amazon. I’m sure you can find one at a fabric store too!

Another trick you can use with either the scarf loop, or a smaller circular thing like a coin, is to place the loop either under or over the dress and gather the fabric around it with an elastic. It makes either a cute pucker or a button.

Cruising is unique because you may find yourself in a variety of situations and climates all in one vacation.

Packing for a cruise always involves taking more clothes than you would for a normal holiday. On most cruises there are certain dress codes for evening wear and different dress codes for different nights of your trip.

Make sure you plan out what to pack in your travel capsule wardrobe for a cruise vacation to be prepared for the diverse destinations, activities, and weather you may encounter. For most moderate to warm-weather itineraries, follow these packing tips for what to wear on a cruise, and you’ll be well prepared.

What to Wear on a Cruise: Daytime

During the day, the main thing is ensuring your cruise clothes are comfortable for relaxing on board or exploring ashore. Normal resort wear is perfectly acceptable during the day.

Cruise daytime wear is typically broken up into two categories:

• Sea days, where you’re on the boat all day
• Port stops, where you are exploring the latest destination at which you’ve arrived

Sea Day Outfit

On most cruises, you’ll have at least one sea day. This means you’ll be on board the ship all day while you sail to the next port.

Typically, these are the most relaxed and casual days. Be sure to pack a swimsuit and cover up or sarong. You’ll also need a hat, flip flops, and sunscreen if you plan to sit by the pool all day.

For beach stops, you can repurpose the same outfit you wore around the pool on your sea day. But if you’re planning to stroll through town or take a ship-sanctioned shore excursion, you’ll want to wear something a with a little more coverage.

What to Wear on a Cruise: Evenings

How much to dress up will depend on the type of cruise. These days, there’s no need to bring formalwear on most cruises, unless you want to. However, there are still some that have formal dinners.

Cruise Packing List

This cruise packing list is based on what I (Emma) would take for a week long cruise in a warm climate:

• Three sundresses that can be worn both for casual dinner and during the day
• Two pairs of shorts for daytime – one denim and one classic
• Three tank tops for daytime – solid colors
• One smart-casual skirt that can be worn for casual dinner and by day
• One long sleeve shirt of light material
• One tunic – perfect for relaxing by the pool on board or by the beach ashore
• One light jacket
• Two bathing suits
• A Little Black Dress – this never goes wrong for evening wear and would be perfect to for a smart-casual dinner
• One cocktail dress – cocktail dresses can be a little more fun than formal gowns but are still suitable for formal dinner.
• One formal gown – a full length gown in a solid color always looks beautiful. Opt for classic elegance and it’ll never go out of style.
• One pair of fancy heels – stick to a neutral color that will match multiple outfits
• One pair of nice sandals – perfect for smart-casual evenings
• One pair of tennis shoes or any comfortable walking shoes
• Complimentary jewelry and bag to match your formal outfits, as well as a practical bag for daytime
• Mascara , foundation , sunscreen and lipstick for a touch of glamour

Start with 10 items focusing on the absolute essentials – the core – and then decide if you need additional items or if you could do with less. If you carefully select your travel clothing choices and, for example, pack 6 tops and 4 bottoms, you’d have 24 ensembles on rotation. That’s 3 weeks’ worth of travel outfits with just 10 pieces of clothing!

I don’t know how I missed this when looking for help on my last cruise?!! I’d love to see packing lists for “over 50” women! 😉

I think the items would be the same, just the style might be different depending what you’re comfortable with. For example, the skinny pants might be swapped for a more classic cut and the short short demin shorts for a slightly longer pair. Or not, depending on what you like.

Upcoming Mediterranean cruise leaving Barcelona April 1, preceded by 10 days in London then Paris, followed by 3 days in Venice. Trying so hard to visualize packing less, less, less…

Susan, for many European cruises, the itineraries are pretty port intensive and formal nights may not be your thing. On our last we were lucky to get back and eat dinner in time before collapsing into bed to prep for the next day! A simple piece like a long skirt (maxi or midi) that can be dressed up or down with tops or accessories has always worked for me. It saves space to not have to pack a formal dress ( or suit for husband) you are only going to wear 2-3 times. Plus it doubles for coverage if you are going to places that require more modest dress.

Casual wear, I’d define as jeans, tanks, shirts, sundresses, etc. While smart casual has a slightly more polished look. Think what you’d wear to casual Friday in a formal office. What To Wear On A Cruise: Dressing For The Vacation Of Your Dreams

So you've booked your dream vacation sailing on the open seas, but you're not sure what to wear on a cruise. Don't worry — cruise vacations take the stress out of travel, and your wardrobe should reflect the laid-back vibes you'll feel as you sail through paradise. The quintessential cruise style is easy to pull off; think vibrant colors, tropical prints and lightweight fabrics.

When you're planning a weekend away, it's important to pack smart. Whether your plan is to cruise through islands, posting up on stunning beaches and swimming in warm, crystal-clear waters, or to hike ancient ruins and wander through medeival cities, this guide will help you pick out the best cruise wear for your trip.

1. What To Wear On A Weekend Getaway Cruise

Packing outfits for vacation can be overwhelming, especially if you're one to overpack for a trip. If that's you, a weekend getaway  can be the perfect challenge for you to curb your bad habits and stick to packing for versatility. The best advice I can give is to pack for the vacation you want to have. Weekend cruises are a great way to unwind and explore another world in a short amount of time, so pack for busy days where you'll be going from the beach to a museum, out to lunch and then back to the beach. For example, pack a swimsuit and some chic sunglasses for the relaxing beach day you're craving, and bring along a breezy cover-up and sandals or comfortable shoes, so you can check out the cool town during lunchtime.

If you're new to cruising, you may be pleasantly surprised to learn that there are activities and events that happen onboard the ship in the evenings and on sea days. Most cruise vacations include at least one formal night where everyone dresses their best for a special dinner. Cruise formal wear still embraces the relaxed energy of sailing, so outfits like a lightweight sport coat, chinos, a colorful dress or a jumpsuit will fit right in. You'll also want to include some smart casual looks, which means something that's a step up from sneakers and sweatpants for your other evening meals.

For sea days when traveling in a warmer climate, you'll definitely want a swimsuit if you plan to take advantage of the onboard water park. However, if you're cruising through a colder region like Canada, you'll want a jacket and some warm layers, so you can stay comfortable on deck.

2. Packing For Your Vacation Plans

Planning ahead for your cruise vacation will help you pack for every moment. Most onshore excursions require reservations, so discuss with your family or travel buddies what kind of activities you cannot miss on your trip ahead of time. If you book an excursion that requires physical activity, opt for comfortable clothing you can move around in like leggings, shorts, sneakers, hiking boots if you're hitting trails, a light jacket (depending on the region you're exploring) and a sturdy backpack. Though hiking boots can take up precious suitcase space, they're essential for exploring a tropical jungle or mountainous terrain, and can double as comfortable shoes for long days spent sightseeing. If you have whale-watching on your agenda, pack a jacket in case it's cold or misty, a hat so you don't get sunburnt, and binoculars.

A quick weekend cruise can take you to some amazing places. I recommend using your time wisely and trying to see as much as you can. For example, a two-night Cyprus cruise  is all about beaches, history and incredible cuisine. Pack outfits that you'll be comfortable in even when the sun is scorching hot, so you don't have to worry about going back to the ship to get changed midday. Effortless flowy skirts and airy linen shirts make great cover-ups for swimwear that will protect your skin from the sun as you explore ancient sites. Comfortable shoes are a must for a trip like this, whether that's a flat sandal with straps or sneakers. Just make sure you're wearing something that won't get caught in the cobblestone streets of Cyprus. Add some fun accessories like a hat or sunglasses and a tote bag to carry all of your souvenirs, and voila  — you have an all-day outfit mapped out.

If cooler climes and rugged mountains call to you, consider a cruise to Canada . Of course, British Columbia requires a different packing strategy than a trip to The Bahamas or the Mediterranean. Even when cruising in the summer months, be sure to dress for the destination, not the season — layers are your friend here. Pack some thin thermals you can layer under your clothes if necessary, so you can spend the day comfortably strolling along the Inner Harbour and checking out Victoria's most notable landmarks. Don't forget a hat and gloves and some wool socks to keep your toes warm, too! When you're hanging out onboard, a thin, packable windbreaker or jacket will come in handy, so you can sit out on the deck with a cup of coffee, admiring the breathtaking scenery.

Still unsure about what to wear on a cruise? Whether you're packing cruisewear for women, men or non-binary people, I recommend getting creative. My favorite part of going on a vacation is that I get to wear things I wouldn't normally wear in my day-to-day. I love putting together patterns and colors that may feel a little funky and wearing sunglasses the size of my face. Take risks with your wardrobe! Your dream vacation will only be that much more memorable.

No matter what type of cruise you're looking for, you're sure to have a blast when you pack the perfect cruise wardrobe. What to Pack for a Cruise – 21 Top Tips for Cruise Clothes

• Take comfortable shoes for the day because on excursions you may walk a lot.
• Evening shoes should be practical but pretty – stillettos are not practical when the boat is rocking!
• Don’t pack tops that are too clingy – you’ll feel uncomfortable in hotter climates.
• Pack cruise clothes that are in accordance with the countries and cultures you’ll be visiting.
• Relaxed A-Line or floaty dresses are ideal for deck-wear.
• A sarong or cover up for around the cruise-ship pool is a must-take.

• Leak Proof Underwear – washable underwear that absorbs small leaks, but doesn’t leave an odour – so good for everyday confidence and better than pantyliners.

How to Pack for a Cruise & What Not to Pack for a Cruise

These are my top tips for cruise packing based on talking to other cruisers, photographing a cruise fashion show, and being a guest on a 105 day cruise aboard Princess Cruises .

What Do I Need to Pack for a Cruise?

If you don’t have to fly to your departure port then you don’t have to worry about the weight of your suitcases.

Although you can, at a push, fit four medium suitcases under the bed (if it’s a double bed) in your stateroom, I wouldn’t suggest this!

Particularly as you’ll find that you’ll probably wear less rather than more on a cruise, and garments that mix and match will see you through lots of different situations.

For any cruise lasting longer than 7 days, the best practice is to pack enough clothes to make up seven outfits, one for each day of the week.

These outfits should be able to be mix and matched.

Then pack a cocktail dress and an evening gown.

After you’ve packed underwear, footwear, swimwear, cosmetics, vanity bag and any medicines you want to take, pack everything and weigh your suitcase.

Then you can lay everything back on the bed, and decide what to take out or if you have room, which extra cruise clothes to add.

What Should I Pack for a Cruise and What Can I buy Onboard?

Pack the basics, but also pack some fun and frivolous items!

It’s a cruise afterall and you are there to have fun!

When it comes to purchasing cruise clothes onboard, there are likely to be boutiques which will tempt you to buy – both designer gear (more expensive) and (reasonably priced) casual gear.

For instance, I bought a couple of stripey nautical tops and a sweatshirt for AUD$24.99 reduced from around AUD$60 which I thought was pretty good. You can also occasionally buy T-shirts, trousers, sun dresses, active wear and jewellery in ship sales as well.

Overall, don’t rely on buying clothes onboard because they might not be to your style, but do see them as an added extra to top up your wardrobe if necessary.

Pack Lightweight No-Iron Clothes

Pack lightweight clothes that can be layered and don’t require ironing. This will save you a ton of time so that you can indulge in drinking cocktails or watching the world go by – literally!

You don’t want to be in the laundry room queuing for an ironing board. No siree. So think crinkle cut fabrics that you can twist and knot after washing and then just hang out, or fabrics which naturally look pretty much wrinkle free after washing.

Take Garments Which Mix ‘n Match.

Try to stick to a colour theme so that everything you have can be mixed and matched. Yes, add a couple of ‘show pony’ pieces in bright or contrasting colours, but keep your base palette pretty tight and create a working capsule wardrobe.

No You Probably Won’t Lose Weight on a Cruise!

Don’t take anything that’s too tight before you start a cruise in the hope that you might squeeze into it later. You probably won’t.

Opt for comfort.

Seek out the best style dresses to hide tummy – as your tummy size may increase during a cruise!

Resort Wear is the Name of the Game

Depending on the cruise your dress theme should probably be ‘resort wear,’ both casual and formal.

However, don’t just take white cut-off pants for shore excursions – be a bit inventive – how about khaki, or navy, or patterned or floral? Something patterned can be teamed with different block coloured blouses.

Take one pair of beautifully cut black pants for evening wear that you can wear with different coloured tops.

What to Pack for Shorter Cruises

For a short cruise, you can’t really overpack because what you’ll need for 4 or 7 days will easily fit in a suitcase that will fit under your bed, and be under the 23kg allowed onboard an aircraft to get to your cruise departure point.

Pack: Daywear, activewear, a ball dress if there’s going to be a ball, an evening dress, cocktail dress, capri pants and tops, long pants and tops, a day dress or two, cardigans, deck shoes, cruise excursion footwear, night-time footwear.

Cruise Clothes – How to Pack for a Cruise in General

I think that although there’s a case for packing a couple of sundresses, a couple of cocktail dresses and a formal gown, separates should feature strongly in your cruise wardrobe.

Pack slacks that can be worn with different tops, for instance as in the photos below.

I’d also be thinking about packing a black pair of pants for more formal evenings, and a more funky pair for casual evenings, as well as cut-offs or capri pants for on shore excursions.

Take your best jeans – ones which look great and are comfortable if you want to take jeans.

Make sure they work well with comfortable flat shoes –  like Sketchers which come in lots of colours and are comfy for walking because you won’t always want to wear heels on the ship, and certainly not on shore excursions.

Don’t forget activewear so you can exercise, whether it is walking around the deck or getting active in the gym or gym classes.

What do you Wear on a Casual Cruise?

For a casual cruise think about what you’d wear to a resort.  Cruise wear should consist of classy casuals that are comfortable and cool (for hot weather cruises), which can be layered for cold nights (and inside where there’s air conditioning).

Below I’m wearing Joseph Ribkoff casuals. I pack at least one pretty blouse and a button down shirt and this red blouse is fabulous for evenings. I also ove these  ponte pant  styled trousers in the image below. I love ponte pants and I’ve written a whole post explaining what they are and how to wear ponte pants , here.

The blouse above would be perfectly suitable with these quirky patterned slacks (or block black or white pants) for a meal in the formal dining room.

Tops that are lightweight and which don’t cling to my tummy are top of the pops for me, as are tops that cover the top of my arms.

I’m wearing FRANKiE4 sandals which are great for walking around the decks, comfortable for walking up and down the stairs and very stylish too. FRANKiE4’s are my go-to travel shoes.

What to Pack for Cruise Excursions

The white blouse below would be a great shore excursion garment – lightweight and comfortable in hot weather but offering good sun cover.

Cruise clothes for shore excursions should be practical, comfortable and look smart. You are an ambassador for the country you’ve come from, so don’t look scruffy.

Choose clothes which flatter your body shape but don’t cling in an unsightly way. Be aware of the country you’re visiting and make sure that you are sensitive to the culture and any clothing rules. Wherever you alight on a cruise, I would opt for sensible, conservative clothes above high fashion. Save your cossie-culture cruise clothes for around the pool.

A comfortable deck and excursion shoe, which could also be worn in the gym or in exercise classes is  the Futsoles range.

Onboard Boutiques

On Sea Princess there was a boutique showcasing Joseph Ribkoff cruise outfits, which are clothes that really go the extra mile.

The cuts are fabulous, the fabrics are lovely, and as one passenger told me:

“The black pants I bought a few years ago have gone on and on and on and on.”

This fits well with my strategy of cruise wear for women consisting of really good staple wardrobe items which you can mix and match with less expensive show pony additions that you might want to change more frequently.

Tip : When it comes to staple items, make sure you take at least 3 bras with you. A dressy bra, a comfy day bra and a sporty exercise bra. Read our Ultimate Guide to Fitting and Buying the Best Bras for your life and body shape.

Formal Cruise Dresses

When it came to packing cruise dresses, I packed some frocks for daywear around the ship, and other more dressy options for evenings – both formal and casual (more to come in a future post).

Nordstrom and Joseph Ribkoff (see stockist links at the end of this post) have some great cruise evening wear.

If you want to cover the top of your arms in a sleeveless dress, then do consider pretty arm cover ups . Read my full post about sleeves for dresses for more hints and tips.

Vivid International have a good range not only of casual cruise clothes, but also cruise dresses like the lace dress below which features a beautiful chiffon coat too.

Cruise Daywear

Keep it cool, keep it non-iron! The relaxed fit A-line midi dress below is Cherry Blossom by Adrift Clothing. I love it’s length, I love that it has sleeves to protect you from the sun, and I love that you can wear it with flat shoes.

It’s all-time favourite shape is in a beautiful, intricate  Amalfi  print. The fabric is a gorgeous silky material, making it comfortable and wearable yet effortlessly stylish.

For casual daywear the Bamboo Swing Dress by Vivid International below, is super cool, non-iron, and easy to team with flat shoes for an excursion, or wearing on deck. I love the A shape and the way it moves.

Moving away from dresses, here are some of my fave separates fit for a cruise to any destination.

The pretty wave inspired print top below is the Bonny Bamboo Swing Top from Vivid International, which I’ve teamed with white bengaline 7/8 ponte pants style capri bottoms, and black sneakers with white laces.

Cruise Wear Dresses for Captain’s Cocktails

I loved the ladies cruisewear Joseph Ribkoff dress below which fits snugly, gives me curves where I really want curves, and at a pinch went okay with my flat FRANKiE4 sandals. Although I probably would have teamed this dress with black shoes with a bit of a heel or wedges, if I’d had them with me on the ship (I didn’t have any with me – big mistake!)

This kind of dress is great for ship events like captain’s cocktail parties and more formal dining, not only because it’s comfortable and moves with you, but also because the fabric is stretchy but firm and helps hold you in a bit. I think it’s really flattering. I love the slimming side panels too.

Yes Jo I agree with all of these packing tips for a cruise. Both cruises I have been on have been in hot weather so I would add bathers, coverups, sun hat, shorts and tops and cool sun dresses to the above. I think I packed far too much formal wear for the evening as I found most guests dressed very casually. In fact I would say some of them dressed way too casual at times. I love your checked pants with the red top. This outfit looks amazing on you with your lovely trim figure.

I think the mix and match thing is really important… you can ‘make’ so many different outfits out of just a few things and if some are plain colours you can dress them up / change them with jewellery. People so rarely remember what you wear if it’s a plain colour! Well, that’s my excuse and why I live in black! 🙂

“Tops that are lightweight and which don’t cling to my tummy are top of the pops for me”….my thinking too. I don’t like clingy things at all but unfortunately I’ve bought some tops in the past before I realised that the clingy effect didn’t look so good. I can see them going into a charity bag very soon to make way for non clingy, light weight, drip dry materials which are so good on a cruise. You can rinse them through, hang them in the shower overnight and they’re dry in the morning.

Have you ever had that nightmare where you're at work, in school or giving an important presentation, and you look down to discover you're wearing only your underwear (or worse, nothing at all)? If you're new to vacationing at sea, knowing how to dress for a cruise can be confusing — and just as potentially embarrassing if you're not prepared.

Packing acceptable attire for a cruise is simple if you remember a few general rules. Here, I'll break down some safe options if you're unsure, and I'll give an overview of the cruise dress codes for each of the "big eight" cruise lines.

What do people wear on a cruise?

You can't go wrong with resort-casual clothing for sea days when you'll remain on board your ship. Although some lines will be more or less casual than that, it's a good baseline. But what is "resort casual"?

Khaki pants or shorts with loose-fitting, short-sleeve, button-down shirts or even nice, plain T-shirts work well for men. Women might opt for khaki shorts or palazzo pants with a nice top or a sundress. In most cases, nice jeans (dark wash with no holes) will work well also.

On most ships, this clothing will also be acceptable at night in the main dining rooms. For extra-fee restaurants, you might choose to dress up a bit more -- perhaps collared shirts or long-sleeve button-downs for men and slacks with a blouse, or a dress, for women.

For formal nights, men will want to bring a collared, button-down shirt at the bare minimum. For something a little more snazzy, bring a jacket to wear over your shirt, with or without a tie. Some men opt for suits or tuxes. For women, pantsuits and dressy pants outfits are a great choice, as are party dresses or even ball gowns.

Jeans are not allowed in the main dining rooms on formal nights, and cut-off shorts, baseball caps and flip-flops are banned at all times during dinner in the main dining rooms.

Another key piece of clothing to bring is a bathing suit. Whether you're headed to a warm-weather destination and plan to laze by the pool or on the beach, or you're visiting somewhere chilly but want to take advantage of your vessel's hot tubs, it's an item you won't want to forget. Note that cover-ups are required for entry at all restaurants and dining rooms, with the exception of walk-up, poolside window-service venues.

For shore excursions — particularly those in more rugged or active destinations that require a lot of walking — comfortable, casual clothing and sturdy footwear are a must. Bring layers for cold climates and moisture-wicking fabrics for places where it's warm or where you expect to work up a sweat.

Finally, check to see if your cruise line has any special theme nights planned. If so, you might want to pack an outfit for the white party or '80s night.

Carnival cruise dress code

Carnival is one line where casual is the name of the game. Passengers will be just fine in jeans, T-shirts, tank tops, shorts and bathing suits for their days on board or ashore.

At night, nice jeans and nice tops are perfect for eating in the main dining rooms.

On Carnival cruise formal nights, known as "cruise elegant" nights, cruisers wear everything from slacks with nice shirts to tuxes and ball gowns. However, most passengers stick to clothes that fall somewhere in the middle.

Voyages of six nights or longer will have two "cruise elegant" nights, while those five nights or shorter will see only one.

Celebrity Cruises dress code

Celebrity Cruises maintains a dress code that's best described as chic-casual. The demographic on board tends to be a bit more upscale than what you'll find on Carnival, Royal Caribbean or Norwegian. That means khaki shorts with nice button-downs are more common than jean shorts and tank tops, although you won't be out of place in the latter.

For dinner, you'll want to dress it up even more, as the line has a smart-casual dress code at night in most restaurants, including the main dining room. Anything from unripped jeans to dress pants with nice blouses or button-downs is acceptable.

Are there formal nights on Celebrity cruises? Yes, there's one on every sailing of six nights or fewer and two on voyages of a week or more, but they have a different name. "Evening chic" nights encourage passengers to go all out with tuxes and evening gowns. However, most men choose slacks with collared or button-down shirts and jackets, sans ties. Most women choose slacks and nice blouses, sundresses or party dresses.

Disney Cruise Line dress code

Disney Cruise Line is synonymous with children, and children like to be comfortable. With that in mind, just about anything goes in terms of dress on The Mouse's ships, which tend toward casual in spite of their stellar service and high price point.

It's not uncommon to see jeans, shorts, T-shirts or bathing suits during the day. Unlike most other lines, the same goes at dinnertime, with jeans and T-shirts just as common as dressier attire like slacks and button-downs.

Exceptions are the line's "dress-up" nights — two on sailings of a week or more and one on shorter voyages. For those, DCL suggests that men avoid jeans and wear jackets. Women should go with dresses, skirts and blouses, or pantsuits.

Some of Disney Cruise Line's added-fee restaurants, such as Remy — one of the most expensive alternative eateries at sea — require jackets for men and don't allow jeans.

Each Disney sailing features a Pirate Night; cruisers wishing to participate should pack their best swashbuckling gear. As is standard at Disney parks, you're also likely to see large numbers of costumes and mouse ears at all hours of the day.

Holland America Line dress code

Although the dress code on Holland America Line ships is technically "cruise casual," you'll rarely spot anyone looking disheveled or like they just rolled out of bed. Most passengers tend toward resort wear or, at the bare minimum, nice jeans with pressed T-shirts.

The casual dress code carries through to dinner, but HAL cruisers can often be found dressing up a bit more — collared shirts or button-downs (sometimes with jackets) and slacks for men and slacks with nice tops or dresses for women.

As for Holland America formal nights, on sailings shorter than a week, there will be one "gala night," where travelers don evening or ball gowns, suits or tuxedos. Voyages of eight to 13 nights will see two gala nights, while any cruises of two weeks or longer will have three chances to dress to the nines.

MSC Cruises dress code

What to wear on MSC cruises largely depends on the crowd with whom you're sailing. On Europe cruises, your fellow passengers are likely to dress up more often — even during the day — with skimpy resort wear and designer bathing suits gracing the pool deck as far as the eye can see. On those voyages, dinner is an even more fancy affair, with elegance as the norm. Expect to see glittering dresses and stylish pants and button-downs with dress shoes, even when it's not formal night.

On cruises that depart from the U.S., expect a more casual vibe, with jeans, T-shirts and bathing suits ruling the day. At night, you'll be fine with nice jeans and a collared shirt or a sundress, although you might want to dress up a bit more to match the ship's ambiance.

Are there formal nights on MSC cruises? Absolutely. They're called "gala dinners," and they appear at least once per voyage, but the number can vary by itinerary. The dress code is strict, with the buffet the only place that will allow T-shirts and shorts. You'll fit in best in a ball gown, cocktail dress, suit or tuxedo.

Norwegian Cruise Line dress code

Norwegian prides itself on allowing cruisers to dress as they please, providing a "come as you are" atmosphere during the day and at night. The most popular clothing is cruise casual, and passengers are free to wear whatever they'd like with an emphasis on comfort.

The only exception is at dinner, when a smart casual vibe encourages travelers to avoid torn clothes or outfits that are suggestive or skimpy.

In a nod to Norwegian's laid-back style, NCL formal nights — dubbed "Dress Up or Not" nights — provide a chance for you to doll up. However, it's not required, and you won't be turned away from the main dining rooms if you choose not to participate. Passengers have been spotted wearing everything from jeans and T-shirts to ball gowns and tuxes, and all coexist in perfect harmony.

Princess Cruises dress code

Princess ' casual daytime mindset means you can wear the same types of clothing on board as you would during a day ashore — activewear, beachwear and jeans or T-shirts are totally fine.

Princess cruise formal nights are special because the line is one of the few industry holdouts in that it still has an official formal night. Its passengers enjoy a more traditional cruise experience, and they relish the romantic vibe that a formal night can provide. With that in mind, the line doesn't mention super-fancy garb like ball gowns or tuxes; instead, it advises suits or slacks with jackets for men and cocktail dresses or pantsuits for the ladies.

On voyages of less than a week, passengers should plan for one formal night, while sailings of a week to 13 days will have two, and cruises two weeks or longer will have three.

All other nights are listed as "smart casual," which means sundresses or pants with flowy tops for women and nice jeans or slacks with collared shirts for men will suffice.

Royal Caribbean dress code

As is the case with Carnival and Norwegian, Royal Caribbean is a casual line during the day. And, like Disney Cruise Line, it caters to a lot of families. Translation: Wear what allows you to have the most fun in the most comfort. Expect to see shorts or jeans with T-shirts or tank tops and bathing suits or beachwear almost exclusively during the daytime.

At night, you might want to put on something a little less comfortable, but it's certainly not required, unless it's a formal night. (Like Princess, Royal still has those.) What is confusing is that the line has three different dress codes, all of which are loosely enforced: casual, smart casual and formal. The ones that show up on your voyage will depend on the length of the cruise.

The only difference between the first two is that smart casual recommends pantsuits for ladies and jackets for the guys, but skirts or trousers with blouses or collared shirts are fine in both cases. Smart casual also strongly discourages jeans -- even nice ones.

Royal Caribbean formal nights have the highest expectations for passengers, urging them to put on their finest cocktail dresses, evening gowns, suits or tuxes. As with the line's smart casual dress code, jeans are not allowed in the main dining rooms on formal nights.

What clothes should you wear on a cruise?

What to wear on a cruise depends on where you’re sailing. While many of our cruises sail to warm beach destinations such as The Bahamas and the Caribbean , we do offer cooler weather cruises to places like Alaska and the Mediterranean during shoulder season that require warmer clothes like jackets and waterproof wear.

If you’re traveling to a warm and sunny destination, here are some things you should wear on your cruise:

While onboard, you’ll be spending a lot of your time in the pool or lounging nearby on the sun deck. You’ll also be sporting swimwear at many of the ports you visit  during your trip. Therefore, it’s a good idea to pack a handful of swimsuits in your bag. Aim to bring at least three if you’re going on a seven-day cruise.

Swim coverups

While it’s perfectly acceptable to stay in your swimsuit while lounging beside the pool, you’ll need a cover-up to walk from your stateroom to the pool, and vice-versa. Keep in mind, depending on where your stateroom or suite is located, you may go through other common areas of the ship (in addition to the elevators) on your way to the pool. Make sure your swim cover-up is something you will feel comfortable in while walking around others.

Sweater or fleece

Even if you’re taking a cruise around the Caribbean , it’s smart to take a light sweater or fleece to wear at night when the temperature tends to cool down. After all, you won’t want to get chilly while enjoying the starry sky from your stateroom veranda or on one of the ship’s decks.

Scarf or pashmina

This is an easy clothing item you can drape over your shoulders to dress up an outfit, or to warm you up if you’re outside and there is a chill in the air. You may also be required to cover your head and shoulders if entering a mosque, or bare arms if visiting a church, so pack something that enables you to respect the local culture.

Bring some fun pieces to accessorize your outfit. You may also want to buy some new items while shopping in the ship’s boutiques, so remember to leave a little extra room in your suitcase just in case.

Sunglasses and sun hats

Aside from lathering up on the SPF, protect yourself from all that sunshine by bringing a sun visor, baseball cap, or wide-brimmed straw hat on your cruise—ideally, one that won’t blow away in a sea breeze. You should also bring at least one pair of sunglasses on board.

Even if you typically use your phone as a clock, bringing a watch on board will help you keep a more accurate eye on the time throughout the day. Casual, comfortable attire

T-shirts, tank tops, shorts, sundresses, and skirts are all perfectly fine clothes to wear on a cruise ship to have lunch in the Oceanview Cafe and other restaurants with a casual dress code. You can also dine in casual pool clothes at the snack bar located next to the pool deck.

Dinner or “smart casual” attire

If you’re having dinner in the main restaurant or any meal at one of the specialty restaurants , you’ll follow a “smart casual” dress code on most nights. This means long pants, jeans, a dress or skirt, a stylish top, or a button-down.

We want our guests to feel comfortable, so Celebrity Cruises’ dress code for smart casual is fairly flexible, though there are some restrictions. T-shirts, swimsuits, robes, bare feet, tank tops, baseball caps, and pool wear are not allowed in the main restaurant or specialty restaurants at any time. In addition, shorts and flip-flops are not permitted during the evening hours.

The smart casual dress code works for all areas of the ship in the evening, including in bars and lounges and during shows and events at the ship’s theater.

If you’re headed for Alaska or northern Europe, or the Mediterranean in the cooler months, think about packing these items:

Wicking tops, lightweight fleeces, and even pants that zip off into shorts are all a good idea for Alaska, especially if you’re out hiking.

Waterproofs

Some of the world’s most beautiful scenery gets that lush shade of green for a reason; the occasional rain shower. Bring a waterproof that folds down small, and a waterproof cover for your camera.

What kind of shoes should you wear on a cruise?

Footwear should not be an afterthought when packing your suitcase for a cruise. While you might have the urge to throw in a pair of flip flops and call it a day, there are a few other essential shoes you’ll need to bring along on your trip.

Flip flops, sandals, or waterproof slides

These shoes will take you back and forth from your stateroom to the pool and vice versa. They also come in handy if you choose to visit the onboard spa . Lightweight water shoes are great for some ports in the Mediterranean, where beaches tend to be pebbly.

Sneakers or comfortable walking shoes

If you’re planning on doing a lot of walking around the ship during days at sea, it’s a good idea to pack a pair of sneakers or other comfortable walking shoes. Sneakers will also be useful if you try out a fitness class or use the gym equipment in the ship’s state-of-the-art fitness center.

If you’re headed somewhere like Norway or Alaska where hiking is one of the most popular activities, it’s worth packing a good pair of walking boots.

If you’re wondering what to wear on a cruise during dinner in the main dining room, meals at specialty restaurants, or shows in the theater, the Celebrity Cruises dress code for these occasions is usually “smart casual”. This means a dress or skirt, stylish pants, smart jeans, a stylish top or button-down. We’d prefer that shorts, tank tops and flip flops were kept for the pool.

What do you wear on a dressier night on a cruise?

Our more formal nights are called “Evening Chic” nights because they’re all about guests looking their absolute best—and loving it. These are the nights when you want to dress up in your most fashion-forward and stylish clothes, while also being elegant and sophisticated.

The Celebrity Cruises dress code for Evening Chic nights is cocktail dresses, skirts, pants, or designer jeans with an elegant top, or dress shirt, button-down shirt, or sweater, and an optional blazer. There’s no need to wear a tie unless you want to.

Our Evening Chic dress code leaves a lot of room for you to show off your personal style, although we’d ask you to leave your ripped jeans or favorite college sweatshirt in your stateroom. You can wear anything from designer denim paired with a blazer to a cocktail dress with a killer set of heels.

If you were looking forward to wearing a tuxedo or formal gown on Evening Chic nights, you can absolutely do that as well. There is no such thing as being overdressed on Evening Chic nights.

All cruises that are seven nights or longer will feature two Evening Chic nights. Shorter cruises feature one Evening Chic night. On all other nights of the cruise, guests are asked to wear smart casual attire.

If for whatever reason you choose to skip Evening Chic nights, you can always dine in one of the specialty restaurants (in smart casual attire) or at the snack bar located next to the pool deck.

What do you wear on cruises during the day?

What to wear on a cruise

So, you’ve booked your cruise (or you’re planning to; may we suggest Viking Cruises ?), marked off the days in your calendar, and now you’re staring at an empty suitcase and wondering what to wear on a cruise. Cruise wear should be breezy, effortless yet stylish. And it’s also an excuse to pack things you may normally not have the chance to wear.

Here’s a rundown of cruise fashion from shoes to swimwear.

A dress is an essential wardrobe item to pack in your suitcase. Cruise dresses should be relaxed yet stylish, midi or maxi length, and ideally in breathable fabrics such as cotton and linen. 

Not only are dresses a complete outfit in themselves – making them a no-fuss option – they can also double as day and nightwear with a few accessory adjustments.

Formal wear

A typical rule of thumb is that week-long cruises will have two formal nights and more if your cruise is longer. So, a couple of formal dresses are a must in your suitcase. 

Whilst traditionally people gravitate towards maxi-length formal dresses for their cruise, don’t be afraid to venture out and pick bright colours, different cuts and interesting fabrics when packing. 

You’ll need a range of shoes for different activities during your cruise. First and foremost, a pair of thongs for beach and pool visits are essential. A good pair of sneakers should also go into your luggage for your day trips. 

A comfortable and relaxed ‘deck’ shoe for when you’re lounging around is another suitcase essential – think loafers or Birkenstocks. Lastly, pack a pair of heels for the formal nights on your cruise to match your formalwear.

Co-ord sets

Co-ord sets are really four outfits in one – making them perfect for a cruise. The set can be worn together as well as with different tops and bottoms. 

Overall, the last thing you want to be preoccupied with on a cruise is curating an outfit each day. Co-ord sets are a quick and chic way to save baggage space and still look stylish.

Swim ming costume

From water slides to Jacuzzis, pools and beaches – you’re bound to do a fair bit of swimming on your cruise. It’s best to pack two sets of swimmers for your trip to have in rotation for your various swimming activities.

Kaftan or sarong

For those times where you’re not quite swimming and not quite ready to be in your everyday clothes, pack a sarong or a kaftan (or both!). Not only do these take up relatively little space in your bags, but they’re super versatile and stylish for trotting around the cruise decks or sitting on your balcony.

Day wear basics

Whether you’re on deck or out on a day trip, basics for day wear will make up the majority of your cruise luggage. Comfy and relaxed clothes are best for day wear. Think linen trousers, singlet tops, shorts and other low-effort pieces.

If you find you’re already packing heavy, take a capsule wardrobe approach to your day wear choices to maximise luggage space.

Dinner and evening attire

In the evenings you’ll be at dinner, watching a show or another on-board event. Don’t forget to pack evening attire for these occasions.

From slinky skirts to cute dresses, make sure to pack those fun items in your wardrobe that you don’t always get a chance to wear.

Hats and other headwear

Whether you’re on the ship or on a beach, you’ll have the sun beating down on you for a good portion of your holiday. Make sure to pack a hat for those extra sunny days.

T here’s usually a little spring in your step as embarkation day approaches and the suitcases come out for your luxury cruise. The anticipation of the journey, the people you’ll meet or reconnect with, the incredible food that awaits – now, what are you going to wear? In a nutshell, how to dress on a cruise boils down to just two phrases – “mix and match” and “relaxed elegance.” The trick is in how to interpret them. Packing a suitcase for luxury cruise vacations, from casual mornings to formal nights, requires an eye for simplicity. Here are the top tips for a stylish and comfortable cruise vacation.

During the Day

Because you are likely heading off-ship at some point during the day, most people wear classic, resort-style clothing in the daytime – the type of activewear you would see at the golf course. If the day is less sporty, women often wear casual sundresses, blouses, skirts and shorts. Sandals and stylish flat shoes are best. Scarves and hats add verve to daytime outfits. Men typically wear polo shirts or short-sleeved collared shirts and smart-casual khakis or shorts. Sandals, loafers and boat shoes complete the look. T-shirts are relegated to the gym, and you can leave tank tops at home. Everyone should pack swimwear for the pool and beach, with cover-ups for entering and leaving these areas. Sunglasses (your best) are de rigeur.

In the Evening

Nighttime is usually split into two groups – formal and informal. What to wear on a cruise formal night is pretty straightforward – evening gowns, cocktail dresses or elegant separates for women, and dark suits or tuxedos for men. Bring it down a step or two for informal nights, your best interpretation of “casual elegance” – stylish dresses or a dressy blouse and skirt/pant combo for ladies, and a dress shirt and pants for gentlemen. Don’t be afraid to inject your own personal style into these guidelines.

Stylish Yet Comfortable

It’s a good rule of thumb to have everything in your luggage going together in some way, sticking to one color palette. Simply, include a white shirt, black shirt, blue shirt, tan pants, black skirt and jeans. If you’re not going to wear something at least twice, leave it at home. Neutrals can be dressed up with jewellery, colorful scarves and amazing shoes. Keep shoes simple – one dressy, one casual, one sandal, one runner. And if your cruise is short, pare things down even more to just one jacket, one suit, one skirt, one pair of blue jeans, one pair of khakis – yet several swimsuits!

For Specialty Cruises

Naturally, the list for what to wear on Alaskan cruises, for example, is a bit different. If you’re going whale-watching, you will need down jackets, warm gloves and hats and waterproof boots of some kind. The key here is to pack as you would if you were going skiing, so whatever the outdoor adventure – particularly on expedition cruises – you’re warm and dry the whole time, hiking boots at the ready. Most expedition cruises supply guests with parkas and boots, so you don’t have to worry about the outer layer. For luxury world cruises or grand voyages that last 40 or 50 days or more, don’t feel you have to bring your entire wardrobe. Just be selective, packing things that match and that can all go in the wash. Try not to bring anything that requires dry cleaning if you can help it.

Dress for Success!

Keep in mind that different cruise lines may have different sartorial requirements, such as no shorts at the bar after 6 p.m., for example. As well, some dining venues on board may require formal attire only. So when packing for a cruise, it’s always better to be slightly overdressed than underdressed. And just like your best friend always says: When you dress like you own the place, you definitely will.

The 2024 cruise season brings Princess' 55th-anniversary sailing to The Great Land, and the line is offering more than 150 Alaska voyages between April and September. The popular Voyage of the Glaciers with Glacier Bay itinerary northbound from Vancouver to Anchorage (Whittier), Alaska , is available on dozens of dates this season on Grand Princess , Royal Princess or Sapphire Princess . The sailing includes stops in the ports of Ketchikan, Juneau and Skagway, as well as scenic cruising in beautiful Glacier Bay National Park & Preserve and College Fjord in Alaska. If you prefer a smaller ship, choose Grand Princess or Sapphire Princess, which hold 2,610 and 2,680 passengers (double occupancy), respectively. Meanwhile, Royal Princess accommodates 3,560 guests at double occupancy.

The Princess Cruises North to Alaska program features immersive, family-friendly opportunities to learn about the history and traditions of the 49th state. Guests can sample fresh local seafood and meet famous Alaskans such as Libby Riddles, the first woman to win the 1,100-mile Iditarod dog race. In Skagway, families can meet some of the newest sled dogs and their handlers during Puppies in the Piazza on the ship. This seven-night itinerary aboard Disney Wonder departs round-trip from Vancouver on several voyages throughout the 2024 Alaska season, which runs from May to September. The weeklong Disney Cruise Line sailing includes glacier viewing along the Stikine Icecap and stops in Skagway, Juneau and Ketchikan. Plus, you'll enjoy plenty of Disney fun on board, with character meet-and-greets, Broadway-quality shows, and entertaining activities and venues for kids and adults alike.

Many of the ship's nautical-themed staterooms are designed with families in mind and feature a "split bath" concept and extra under-bed storage for suitcases. Disney Wonder can hold 1,750 passengers at double occupancy and 2,700 passengers at maximum capacity. The ship's unique rotational dining venues include an "under the sea" adventure at Triton's, a dinner show with Disney characters at Animator's Palate and Southern specialties with jazz music at Tiana's Place. Holland America Line: 7-Day Alaska Inside Passage

Holland America's Koningsdam will sail the line's seven-day Inside Passage itinerary more than 20 times between April and September in 2024. This round-trip voyage embarks in Vancouver and includes multiple days of scenic cruising. You'll sail through the Inside Passage for two days; through Tracy Arm Inlet, where you can disembark for a shore excursion; and through Glacier Bay, where the Junior Ranger Program is a highlight for kids. The ports of call on this itinerary are Juneau, Skagway and Ketchikan in Alaska.

Koningsdam features dedicated family staterooms with beds for up to five guests, two bathrooms and extra closet space. The ship carries 2,650 guests at double occupancy and 3,194 passengers at maximum capacity. A wildlife expert on the ship helps guests spot Alaska's incredible marine and land animals through announcements and during daily programs. Keep an eye out for humpback whales, orcas, sea otters, moose, brown bears and other wildlife. Royal Caribbean International: 7 Night Alaska Adventure Cruise

Hop aboard Royal Caribbean's Quantum of the Seas for the seven-night Alaska Adventure Cruise, sailing round-trip from Seattle . This itinerary is available on several dates between May and August 2024 and features stops in the towns of Ketchikan, Sitka and Juneau, plus scenic cruising in Endicott Arm and Dawes Glacier in Alaska. There's also an afternoon call in the Canadian city of Victoria. While there, book an off-roading excursion through the coastal rainforest that includes a zip line adventure. Or, take a self-guided tour through Victoria's famed Butchart Gardens and the tropical Butterfly Gardens filled with wildlife.

Quantum of the Seas – which holds 4,180 passengers at double occupancy and 4,905 passengers at maximum capacity – is one of the two larger Royal Caribbean ships sailing in Alaska in 2024 (Ovation of the Seas is the other). As such, it offers abundant activities and entertainment for families at sea. On board, guests can experience Ripcord by iFly (the only skydiving simulator at sea) and take in snow-capped mountain views from the FlowRider surf simulator or atop the ship's rock climbing wall. Other onboard activities include bumper cars, an escape room, an arcade, pickleball and The Silent Party (a dance party where everyone wears headphones).

At mealtime, kids will have plenty of choices for casual and quick bites, from carefully crafted hot dogs at the Dog House and specialty pies at Sorrento's Pizza to around-the-clock snacks at Café Promenade and grab-and-go fare at The Café@Two70. Carnival's 2024 Alaska season runs from May to September, with the 7-Day Alaska from Seattle itinerary available every month during that time. The round-trip sailing aboard Carnival Luminosa stops in Juneau, Skagway and Ketchikan, Alaska, as well as Victoria, British Columbia. You'll enjoy scenic cruising in Victoria and through Tracy Arm Fjord. Celebrity Cruises: 7 Nights Alaska Hubbard Glacier

Celebrity's seven-night Alaska Hubbard Glacier itinerary is available on nine voyages between May and September 2024. The Celebrity Solstice (which holds 2,852 guests at double occupancy) sails round-trip from Vancouver and stops in the ports of Icy Strait Point, Juneau and Ketchikan in Alaska. You'll have two days of scenic cruising in the Inside Passage and around Hubbard Glacier. While in Icy Strait Point, book a guided nature walk excursion along the "Trail of the Bears" in the bush country of the Spasski River Valley. If you prefer a small-ship cruise experience without the bells and whistles of some larger vessels, UnCruise offers adventure-style cruises to Alaska on its fleet of safari- and expedition-style ships. W hen it comes to cruising in style, packing the right attire for every occasion is essential. Including a few key versatile items on your cruise packing list will prevent your suitcase (and the limited closet space in your stateroom) from becoming overcrowded – and keep you looking appropriate for all events.

Although most cruise lines outline their suggested dress codes in the FAQ sections of their websites, be sure to also review the specifics of your cruise itinerary. Not only will the destination and weather factor into what you should wear on your cruise, but you'll also want to know if formal nights require black-tie attire, themed dress parties need costumes or shore excursions necessitate unique clothing or footwear.

Whether you'll be lounging by the pool or attending a glamorous dinner, our list of must-have items and suggestions from industry experts will help you navigate dressing for your next cruise vacation.

For relaxing sea days, prioritize comfort above all else. Depending on your planned activities, any of the following casual options are considered acceptable attire:

While more casual these days, cruise formal nights still call for a bit more sophistication and style. Appropriate options include:

Ashley Kosciolek, senior cruise writer for The Points Guy, always packs a gown or a fancy cocktail dress for a formal night. "I work from home and don't have a reason to dress up otherwise, so I look forward to it." She adds, "My dinner won't taste any better or worse based on what others are wearing."

When heading off the ship for a shore excursion, opt for comfortable, weather-appropriate clothing and sturdy footwear to make the most of your adventures on land. Consider packing the following items:

Cruise Line Dress Codes

Dress codes can vary significantly from one cruise company to the next, so it's a good idea to check with your specific line before filling up your suitcase. Once you're on board, be sure to read the daily program for reminders about the dress codes required at the events and dining venues during your voyage.

Azamara Dress Code

• Daytime: Fairly casual attire is suitable throughout Azamara 's ships during the day. However, baseball caps, distressed denim, tank tops and bathing suits cannot be worn at Discoveries, Aqualina and Prime C restaurants (and shoes are required).
• Evening: At night, women typically wear casual dresses, skirts, pants, capris, blouses and knit tops, while men are welcome to wear collared golf and polo shirts, shorts and pants. Sport coats are optional. Note: There are no official formal nights on Azamara's voyages.
• Themed Nights: Be sure to pack an all-white outfit for Azamara's signature White Night dinner and deck party.

Carnival Cruise Line Dress Code

• Daytime: Pack casual, comfortable attire to sail with Carnival Cruise Line , such as T-shirts, polo shirts or relaxed tops paired with shorts, capris, khakis or jeans. Athletic wear paired with a lightweight sweater or jacket are suitable for those looking to stay active. 

Evening: After 5:30 p.m., attire ranges from "cruise casual" to "cruise elegant."

• "Cruise casual" attire for men typically suggests longer dress shorts, pants or jeans and a collared polo shirt. Women usually wear sundresses, blouses, skirts, dress shorts and capri pants.
• "Cruise elegant" typically translates to dress slacks, dress shirts and sports coats (suggested) for men, with some wearing suits, ties or tuxedos. Women choose dresses (party or cocktail), pantsuits and elegant skirts with blouses, while some may wear evening gowns. Kids should follow the adult dress code, opting for school dance- or party-appropriate attire. Note: Jeans, men's sleeveless shirts, shorts, T-shirts, sportswear, exercise clothes, baseball hats, flip-flops and bathing suits are not permitted. The number of "cruise elegant" evenings varies based on the length of the cruise.

Themed Nights:

• Carnival Journeys cruises feature a "Throwback Sea Day," where guests can relive the '80s by day (outfits included) and dress up for a themed Captain's Cocktail Party by night. 
• Cruises between early December and Christmas Day feature an "Ugly Sweater Contest."
• Costumes are suggested for Halloween cruises between the end of September and October. However, when choosing a costume, keep in mind that full masks are prohibited (masks covering half of the face are allowed).

Celebrity Cruises Dress Code

• Daytime: During the day, smart casual resort wear is suitable throughout Celebrity Cruises ' ships. (Think: sundresses, shorts, polos and button-down shirts paired with sandals, low heels and loafers.) Bathing suits with cover-ups, T-shirts, tank tops, hats and sunglasses are only appropriate poolside. Cruisers should avoid wearing these items in the dining areas.
• Evening: Most evenings, guests are expected to wear comfortable yet tasteful attire. This entails dresses, skirts, long pants or jeans, stylish tops and button-down shirts. Shorts and flip-flops do not meet the evening dress code. Depending on your voyage, there will be one or two formal nights that require "evening chic" wear. Passengers can dress to impress in formal gowns, tuxedos, cocktail dresses, dressy jeans or blazers.

Costa Cruises Dress Code

• Daytime: During the day, Costa Cruises ' passengers may wear casual clothing like T-shirts, shorts and sundresses. Beach clothing and flip-flops are not permitted in ship restaurants. Depending on the itinerary, some shore excursions may have specific dress codes.
• Evening: Most nights require resort attire; however, Costa hosts one or two Elegant Evenings per cruise, when men may wear dark suits or tuxedos and women can wear evening gowns or cocktail dresses.
• Themed Nights: Costa recommends that guests pack white clothing for its White Night events and white, red and green clothing and accessories for its Italy-themed evenings.

Cunard Line Dress Code

• Daytime: Shorts, T-shirts and sundresses are appropriate daytime wardrobe options on sailings with Cunard Line . Swimwear is acceptable by the pool but should not be worn in indoor dining areas.
• Evening: In the evenings, passengers are asked to wear smart attire, which includes dress shirts and trousers for men, and cocktail dresses or sophisticated tops and skirts for women – similar to what you'd choose for dinner at a trendy restaurant or a special occasion. Voyages lasting seven nights host at least two Gala Evenings, during which guests are requested to adhere to a more formal dress code. 
• Themed Nights: Gala Evenings employ themes ranging from specific colors (such as black and white or red and gold outfits) to the roaring '20s to masquerade balls.

Disney Cruise Line Dress Code

• Daytime: On Disney Cruise Line sailings, cruise casual attire is acceptable during the day; outfit options include sundresses and shorts and tees. Swimwear and tank tops are not permitted in dining venues.
• Evening: After the sun sets, polished attire like collared shirts and jeans without rips are acceptable. Bathing suits, tees, tank tops and sports attire are not allowed. Adult-exclusive dining venues on Disney ships call for elegance; formal or semiformal wear is recommended.
