8 Tips for Flying Wizz Air

' height=

See recent posts by Peter Thornton

Flying within Europe? You’ll likely come across some incredibly cheap flights on Wizz Air—especially if you’re flying to/from Eastern Europe. Based in Budapest, the airline, along with its subsidiaries Wizz Air UK and Wizz Air Abu Dhabi, flies to over 160 airports around Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East.

While the airfares on Wizz Air are often shockingly low, you’ll want to know what you’re getting into before you get too excited about that €10 ticket. Much like Spirit and Frontier in the U.S. and Ryanair in Europe, Wizz Air is an ultra-low-cost carrier that adds fees for just about everything. Follow these tips to have the best experience and learn how to take advantage of its cheap flights without paying exorbitant fees.

Pay for Bags in Advance

Man walking down glass hallway in airport while wearing a backpack

Don’t be tricked by the terminology used by Wizz Air for what baggage is included in your ticket. Wizz Air only includes one small “carry-on” bag that does not exceed 40 x 30 x 20 cm and 10kg in the initial ticket price. This is similar in size to what U.S. airlines consider a “personal item” that fits under the seat. If you have a larger carry-on bag or checked luggage, you’ll want to pay for it during booking for the best prices.

Baggage fees vary depending on weight, season, and where you purchase. Any excess weight or baggage fees paid at the airport are considerably higher than if you were to book in advance. The fees are actually somewhat reasonable if you pay for your bags during booking. Sure, it may be double the airfare but your total cost could still be much cheaper than flying other airlines.

Purchase Wizz Priority

If you want to bring a larger bag onboard the aircraft and avoid checking luggage, you’ll need to purchase Wizz Priority . This allows you to bring a “trolley bag” onboard, which is similar to a normal sized carry-on bag allowed by U.S. airlines. The trolley bag is in addition to the smaller carry-on bag included in your ticket and can be up to 55 x 40 x 23 cm and 10kg.

Wizz Priority also includes priority check-in and priority boarding. The fee varies between €5-40 according to the website. For the flights I recently purchased, it was around €15 per flight which was cheaper than any checked bag fees and well worth it. I got the feeling that Wizz Priority passengers were less scrutinized on the size/weight of their luggage. Technically, my bags may have been too large or too heavy but I was never asked to weigh or size my bags.

Of course, there is no guarantee that you won’t have your bags weighed or sized but there’s much less of a chance if you avoid the check-in counter all together. During boarding, agents are more interested in getting the flight off on time than checking the size of your bag—especially for priority passengers boarding first.

Compare Bundles

If you do have checked luggage, you’ll want to compare the bundles offered to simply purchasing all of the extras you need a la carte. Wizz Go includes a trolley bag, 20kg of checked luggage, seat selection, free airport check-in, priority boarding, and priority check-in. This can be a good choice for flyers who travel with multiple bags and wish to choose seats. Otherwise, you may be able to pay less by paying for just a checked bag or seat selection separately.

Wizz Plus includes premium seat selection, Wizz Flex, and 32kg of checked luggage in addition to all of the extras included with Wizz Go. This is the best option if you want an all-inclusive experience without worrying about extra fees to change your flight or receive a travel credit if plans change and you can’t fly. Still, if you don’t think you’ll use all of the extras included, it may be cheaper to just purchase what you need a la carte. Since prices vary, you’ll need to compare for each booking.

Plan to Sit Apart or Pay Extra (Unless Traveling with Children)

Family sitting together on airplane

One of the most annoying fees that has become commonplace in the airline industry is the fee to choose a seat assignment. If you’re traveling with a companion, you won’t be guaranteed seats next to each other when flying Wizz Air unless you pay extra. The seat selection page makes it seem like you have no choice but to pay extra for seat assignments by auto-selecting recommended seats.

If you want to take your chances and have seats auto-assigned at check-in for free, you’ll need to select the “choose seats later” option. If you’re traveling with two adults, you’ll be given a pop-up with an option to pay €12 for a “ sitting together ” add-on. This doesn’t allow you to choose specific seats but guarantees you’ll at least get seats together. If you don’t want to pay, make sure to click “No, thanks”.

Children under 14 years of age will be auto-assigned a seat next to at least one accompanying adult so you don’t have to pay extra to guarantee a seat next to your child.

Download the App

One of the best tips I can give for flying Wizz Air is to download its mobile app . This will make the check-in process, boarding, and verifying documents much easier. You can easily take photos of your COVID-19 vaccine and testing documents and upload them to your reservation via the app, which is required for most flights these days. And with the app, you don’t need to worry about paying extra to check in at the airport since you can get a mobile boarding pass right on the app.

Related: 5 Apps You Need for COVID-19 Travel

Check-In Online

If you don’t have the app, you’ll want to make sure that you check-in online at least 3 hours before scheduled departure time. After that cutoff, you may be forced to check-in at the airport and pay a fee to do so. If you didn’t purchase a seat assignment, you can check-in starting 48 hours before departure. If you paid extra for a seat, online check-in is available 30 days before departure.

For airports that don’t allow online or mobile check-in, you’ll be able to check-in at the airport free of charge. To be sure, it’s always a good idea to attempt online check-in first.

Be At the Gate on Time

Empty terminal at airport

Wizz Air’s business model is all about reducing the amount of time an airplane sits on the ground between flights. For this reason, it is imperative that you are at your departure gate no later than 30 minutes before the scheduled departure time as Wizz Air is very strict on this cut-off time.

You’ll often need to board a bus which brings you to the airplane. This means that boarding closes earlier than you may be used to when flying on other airlines that primarily have jet bridge gate access. Give yourself extra time to make it to your gate. There is no reason to add stress by running late.

Become a Member

Lastly, consider signing up for the Wizz Discount Club . Standard membership allows the member to receive benefits and is only €29.99/year. Group membership gives benefits to the member and up to five companions for €69.99/year. Benefits include €10 off all fares that are at least €19.99 and €5 off checked bag fees for 20kg or 32kg bags. Simple math will tell you that the membership can pay for itself after just three flights and even fewer if you have checked bags.

I decided to pay for the membership for two flights I recently purchased since it saved me €20 off the bat. Chances are that I’ll be flying within Europe again sometime in the next year and the membership will pay for itself. If you plan to take multiple flights in Europe, a membership may make sense— specially if you travel with heavier checked luggage.

Wizz Air Airbus A321 Economy Class Review [CPH to GDN]

Booking Wizz Air

Airline:  Wizz Air (W6) Aircraft:  Airbus A321 Flight # : W61742 Route:  Copenhagen Airport, Kastrup (CPH) to Gdańsk Lech Wałęsa Airport (GDN) Date:  December 21, 2023 Duration:  1 hour, 5 minutes Cabin and Layout:  Economy class, 3-3 Seat:  16C Cost:  369 Danish krone (~$54)

After booking a one-way vacation to Copenhagen, Denmark, I was challenged with planning the final week of my family’s winter break holiday. We knew we wanted to visit Kraków, Poland, and fly home from Warsaw, Poland, but direct flights and trains to Kraków from Copenhagen were a bit cost-prohibitive. Enter Google Flights and its Explore feature .

After seeing where we could fly from Copenhagen for around $50 per person, I landed on Gdańsk, Poland, on the northern coast of the country. The only concern with this plan was that the flights were on Wizz Air, which I had never flown. Tales of its tiny bag sizer are infamous, and I knew that booking with this ultra-low-cost carrier came with the risk that we would need to pay extra fees for baggage, seating, and food.

Ultimately, the flights were too cheap to resist, and I figured, “Why not?” Let’s see what all the fuss was about and if Wizz Air would be a good fit for your next intra-Europe short-haul flight.

I priced the flights via Capital One Travel and Chase Travel but ultimately opted to book with Wizz Air directly. I figured that with such a restrictive airline, booking directly might save me any headaches if the flight was delayed or changed.

I paid using my husband’s British Airways Visa Signature ® Card as he was working towards the minimum spending requirement on a welcome bonus offer . This card only earns 1x Avios on travel, so if you weren’t working towards a bonus, I’d suggest using one of our recommended best credit cards for airfare purchases to earn up to 5x points or miles.

I purchased the 5 Travel Light tickets (the most basic fare) for 369 DKK (~$54) each and added 1 checked bag at 20 kilograms (44 pounds) for 195 DKK (~$28).

While I was encouraged to select and pay for seating at booking, I quickly researched Wizz Air’s family seating policy . I felt confident that the random seat allocation at check-in, free of charge, would pair our kids with a parent (which it ultimately did).

Wizz Air CPH GDN seat map

Knowing Wizz Air’s baggage policies ahead of time also helped set our luggage expectations for our entire trip. This flight was the most size restrictive of our travels, allowing just 1 complimentary small personal carry-on per person that had to fit in the underseat space. We brought on a mix of backpacks and duffel bags, verified weights with our luggage scale , and checked a large suitcase.

You can subscribe to the Wizz Discount Club to save on fares and checked baggage when booking your flight. At €69.99 (~$76) per year, I would not have saved money on this particular booking and had no other plans for future Wizz Air flights.

Copenhagen Airport, Kastrup

My family took a train from Copenhagen Central Station to Copenhagen Airport for 60 DKK (~$9) for 2 adults and 3 kids under age 12. The train and the subway cost the same , but the subway takes longer due to multiple stops.

We arrived at CPH’s Terminal 2 around 10 a.m. for our 12:45 p.m. flight. While the weather was wet and dreary on arrival, a plane-themed slide was just outside the terminal entrance, which made things a bit more cheery. The airport has several play areas for kids , which parents always appreciate.

CPH Terminal 2 entrance

Unfortunately, our early lounge plans were thwarted upon learning that bag drop only opens 2 hours before the flight . After a few minutes with cranky kids, my husband and I decided to divide and conquer. He stayed behind to check the bag, and I went through security with the kids.

As we were traveling within the Schengen Area , we did not need to clear passport control, so we passed through the traditional security screening and were on our way to the lounge.

For those with Priority Pass access, consider stopping at the Carlsberg Aviator Lounge , near gates A and B on the level above Bistro Sommelier.

Carlsberg Aviator Lounge CPH entrance signage

The lounge is open  Sunday through Friday from 5 a.m. to 9:30 p.m.  and  Saturday from 5 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Several lounge programs and airlines (excluding SAS) can access this lounge. I entered with my Priority Pass membership via my  Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card . As my husband also has a Priority Pass thanks to being an  authorized user on my card, our children could enter as our guests.

The lounge was busy, and the high-top seats with stools closest to the buffet had the most vacancies.

Carlsberg Aviator Lounge CPH seating and buffet

This lounge had an issue with a lack of readily accessible outlets. Most outlets were along the glass window walls that overlooked the terminal, so these wingback chairs were in high demand.

Carlsberg Aviator Lounge CPH right seating

My family found 5 seats together at one of the banquettes along the wall. These were not the most comfortable for an extended stay, though they were sufficient for grabbing a quick bite and being on our way.

Carlsberg Aviator Lounge CPH wall seating

The buffet was set with savory lunch items, which was ideal since we were not planning on purchasing meals or snacks on the flight.

The options included cheeses, pickled herring, egg salad, flæskesteg with rødkål (roast pork with red cabbage), several spreads, a few fresh salads, bread, and fresh whole fruit. My kids were definitely disappointed that there were no sweets.

Carlsberg Aviator Lounge CPH fish dips

Beers on tap included Carlsberg, Brewmasters India Pale Ale, Carlsberg Nordic Ale, and Carlsberg 1883. There was a Coca-Cola soda fountain, a self-serve coffee machine, bottles of wine, and a juice and water dispenser. Note that there were no single-serve beverages to take out of the lounge with you.

Carlsberg Aviator Lounge CPH taps

The bathrooms were located near the check-in desk. There were not many stalls, but the bathroom was kept clean. There are no showers in this lounge.

Carlsberg Aviator Lounge CPH sinks

Seating during peak times can be challenging, the lack of outlets was noticeable, and our gate was on the opposite side of the airport. Check out my in-depth review of the Carlsberg Aviator Lounge for more images and full details about this lounge.

When we checked in, our flight’s gate was not announced. During our lounge visit near the A/B gates, I noticed it had been assigned to F8. After a 20-minute hike to the opposite side of the airport, we arrived at the F gates.

All aircraft assigned to these gates utilize remote stands , meaning you have to walk outdoors and up a stair ramp to the plane vs. access via a jet bridge.

After an agent set up the Wizz Air bag sizer, boarding was announced for Wizz Priority passengers. Thankfully, I never saw this sizer used by ground staff.

It was a cold and blustery day, so we quickly hustled across the apron and boarded the aircraft from the front. Passengers could also board from the rear, depending on the location of their seats.

On Board Wizz Air’s Airbus A321

The flight attendants wore hot pink parkas and greeted us as we boarded. I mentioned I liked one to an attendant as I passed, to which she replied, “I’m glad somebody does!”

The all-economy A321 cabin is set in a 3-3 configuration. There is 1 row of first row seats (extra legroom, fast exit, first served), 3 rows of upfront seats (fast exit, first served), 3 rows of extra legroom seats, and the remaining cabin seats are standard. The standard seats, where I was seated, have a seat width of 18 inches and a seat pitch of 28 inches.

Wizz Air CPH GDN preboarded plane

My family had 5 seats in row 16, and I chose the aisle seat.

Wizz Air CPH GDN seating

Even though our bags were expected to be placed under our seats, we found plenty of overhead space available.

Wizz Air CPH GDN overhead storage

Each seat had adjustable air nozzles and reading lights. Because this was a cold daytime flight, neither was needed.

Wizz Air CPH GDN air vents lights

The tray tables had a lip at the end to prevent sliding and a recessed cup holder. Unfortunately, it was too small for my laptop.

Wizz Air CPH GDN tray table

Legroom-wise, my knees were not quite up against the seatback pocket, but they were close. I had a lot of space underneath the seat in front of me to stretch out my legs, so the seat was comfortable enough for a flight of just over an hour.

Wizz Air CPH GDN legroom

Flight attendants pushed a for-purchase food and beverage trolley through the cabin around 24 minutes into the flight, with a quick pass-through for trash about 7 minutes later.

The entire Wizz Cafe menu is available online, but highlights included:

  • Sandwich meal deals with a drink and snack from €8.50 (~$9)
  • Sweet and savory snacks available from ~€2 (~$2)
  • Sodas from €3.50 (~$4)
  • Beer and wine deals for 2 from €12 (~$13)

I have few words for the lavatory other than minuscule . The restroom at the rear of the aircraft was quite possibly the smallest airplane lavatory I’ve ever seen. That said, it was clean enough, and the design made use of the small space and even had a baby changing station.

Wizz Air CPH GDN lavatory

I did not interact much with the onboard crew during this brief flight, but they smiled through chattering teeth during the boarding process when positioned next to the open cold and windy doors. The food and trash removal services were speedy and without fuss — just like they should be.

We touched down in Gdańsk around 1:30 p.m. and were off the plane within 10 minutes. Similar to our departure in Copenhagen, it was cold, wet, and windy on arrival, so we quickly deplaned onto the apron and hustled into the airport. This flight utilized both the forward and rear doors for maximum efficiency.

Wizz Air CPH GDN on arrival

Our checked bag arrived on the belt quickly, and there was no passport control since we stayed within the Schengen Area.

Visitors can easily follow the colored lines on the floor to various transit options to the city center. We opted for an UberXL for 108.92 Polish złoty (~$27.70).

Wizz Air CPH GDN transit lines

Admittedly, the flight was the easiest part of this travel day. We bypassed any baggage scrutiny and had a quick and efficient flight. You can’t ask for much more when traveling with kids in winter!

What made our experience successful was being well-prepared. I was well-versed in the baggage policies before leaving home, researched family seating, snacked ahead of the flight at the lounge, and was prepared with electronic devices to compensate for the lack of inflight entertainment.

I would not hesitate to fly Wizz Air again if given the opportunity. This flight was a fifth the cost of similar SAS Go Light fares (with similar baggage policies), and paying more just to earn miles would not have made sense for us.

WizzAir has this week unveiled their new ‘She Can Fly’ program, as part of their WizzAir Pilot Academy. For those unfamiliar, the WizzAir pilot academy (WAPA) takes want-to-be pilots from no previous flying experience, to the right-hand seat of the airline’s A320/21 fleet, in just 18 months. The carrier fronts a significant portion of the costs, but still requires cadets to pay a contribution of €13,950, with the remaining balance (up to the total of €61,460) being fronted by the airline and repaid through a salary sacrifice scheme once employed. This still presents a barrier to future pilots, and so WizzAir’s ‘She Can Fly’ program totally alleviates this, with just an €800 enrollment fee covering the first phase of training.

Speaking to the media, WizzAir’s spokesperson said:

Only 5% of the world’s commercial pilots are women, and we believe it is time for that to change. The “Wizz Air Pilot Academy She Can Fly program” is designed to give aspiring female pilots the opportunity to pursue their passion for aviation and achieve their career goals with affordable terms. Join us on this journey to break down gender barriers and increase the representation of women in aviation.

The ATPL License

Cadets on the ‘She Can Fly’ program will gain a frozen ATPL license upon completion of training, alongside an Airbus A320/21 Type Rating. This allows the holder to exercise the privileges of a PPL, CPL and IR license, as well as operate commercially as a co-pilot on the Airbus A320/21 family of aircraft.

The Program will last around 18-21 months, with a further 5-6 months of advanced training with WizzAir (Type Rating, Line and Base Training) before flying passengers commercially. The course is designed to take candidates with little to no flying experience. The start dates for 2023 are named as June 2023, and October 2023, with a course size of 10-15 cadets per course.

Eligibility for the ‘She Can Fly Program’ includes:

  • To be based and have an unrestricted right to live and work in one of the following countries where Wizz Air has an operational base: Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Georgia, Hungary, North Macedonia, Moldova, Poland, Romania and Serbia
  • Must be an aspiring female pilot aged 18 or above
  • Ability to swim 50m without any aid
  • Minimum high school degree achieved (GCSE’s for those in the UK)
  • Fluent in English (both written and spoken)
  • Good understanding of Mathematics and Physics
  • University degree and previous flight experience up to PPL license will be taken into consideration during the pre-screening phase

Males are not permitted to apply to this program, though they can apply to the Wizz Air Pilot Academy, which is partially-funded.

How to Apply

Candidates can apply directly via the WizzAir Careers Site . The assessment process is split into five stages:

  • Stage 1: Pilot Aptitude Test
  • Stage 2: Personality Questionnaire
  • Stage 3: Group Exercise
  • Stage 4: Personal Interview with WizzAir Pilot Recruitment Team and representative from Trener Flight School
  • Stage 5: Financial Background Check and Class 1 Medical (required to provide certificate)

It is likely this scheme will attract many applicants, so interested candidates should consider applying as soon as possible.

What keeps us flying Ryanair and Wizz Air?

Customers might grumble about these low-cost carriers but their passenger numbers keep rising. is it just the cheap seats that keep us coming back for more chris haslam reports.

Wizz, launched in 2004, was initially a Ryanair imitator

T hey’re the least popular short-haul economy airlines in the UK, according to the consumer-rights group Which? — with both rated one star for customer service and seat comfort and considered to offer worse value than all other airlines, from Air France to Jet2.

At No 21 on the Which? list is Ryanair, the pioneer of low-cost aviation that has redefined the experience of flying. One place below, and rock bottom, is Wizz Air, the Hungarian carrier that has achieved an even lower customer-satisfaction rating than last year to remain the most hated airline in Britain.

But while we complain about the carriers in the same way that we moan about the weather, we’re putting our bums on their narrow seats in greater numbers than ever. Last week Wizz Air said that its passenger numbers for March were up 12 per cent compared with the figure for the same month last year, hitting 4.78 million, driven in large part by its resumption of flights to Israel.

At the same time Ryanair announced that it carried 13.6 million passengers in March, a million more year on year.

With a fleet of 574 aircraft (and another 374 on order), slots at more than 250 airports and about 3,600 flights a day, Ryanair has grown over four decades to become Europe’s largest airline, and in terms of market capitalisation the biggest in the world. Last year its workhorse Boeing 737s carried 182 million passengers, 59 million more than the Lufthansa Group, which was second in terms of passenger numbers. International Airlines Group — comprising British Airways, Iberia, Vueling, Aer Lingus, Level (which has a hub in Barcelona) and a couple of cargo carriers — could muster only 115 million passengers last year, while easyJet had 83 million and Wizz 60 million.

So how did a publicity-hungry disrupter that first flew from Waterford to Gatwick in 1985, with a second-hand turboprop aircraft and 15 passengers, grow to become the master of the air? Quite simply, it’s the fares.

Wizz Air are set to fly from Rome to India

Tickets for that first flight were £99 return, less than half the price charged by British Airways and Aer Lingus. Ryanair no longer flies from Waterford because the runway is too short for its aircraft, but a return flight to Gatwick from Cork — the nearest alternative — starts at £31.

Did Ryanair know that it would change the air travel paradigm, or was it just looking for a share of the market? Either way, it attacked the airline business like a guerrilla army, occupying the airports with the cheapest slots and targeting the minds — if not the hearts — of the travel hungry and cash poor. “Ryanair had a complete obsession with cost and production, maximising the hours its aircraft spent in the air and thus the daily number of seats they could sell,” John Grant, of the aviation analysts OAG, says. “When you get those two right you can price to create your own market.”

A decade after that first flight Ryanair had ten second-hand 737s flying four European routes — secondary airports in Stockholm, Oslo, Paris and Brussels that the experts said the public would never buy. Learning from Dallas-based Southwest Airlines, it had already binned business class and the food service and put a price tag on everything that had once been included in ticket prices. In 2000 they paid 17-year-old John Beckett and his schoolmate Tom Lenihan £20,000 to build one of the world’s first booking websites, allowing it to offload the travel agents that at the time every other airline needed to sell tickets, thus saving the commission.

By 2010 the fleet had grown to 272 aircraft. Ryanair had rewritten the book on airline operations, stripping every shred of luxury from flights. In doing so it transformed not only the aviation industry, but also the business of travel.

Politicians across Europe courted the Ryanair chief executive Michael O’Leary, urging the empire builder to bestow a flight upon them and turn their home town into a city-break destination. Cheap flights encouraged investment in hotels, restaurants and attractions, created employment and boosted the promotion of arts and culture, fostering the development of tourism economies in destinations overflown by the A-list-focused legacy carriers.

A 2018 report by the Centre for European Policy Studies noted that Ryanair, and other low-cost carriers (LCCs) created in its form, “enhanced the accessibility of not only major cities, but also secondary destinations less travelled by tourists. For example, new routes offered by LCCs in the eastern European regions triggered more and more tourist travel to capitals such as Budapest, Prague, Krakow, Riga as well as other relatively smaller cities.”

Unlike Ryanair, Wizz Air can fly you to Tashkent in Uzbekistan

Wizz, launched in 2004, was one of those Ryanair imitators. Founded by Jozsef Varadi, former chief executive of the Hungarian state airline Malev, it displays the same relentless obsession with cutting costs and services. Its route map is all but identical to that of Ryanair, its turnaround times equally tight (an aircraft on the ground isn’t earning) and its ticket prices just as unbelievable — Gatwick to Faro for £12.99, for example. Like Ryanair, its use of the same aircraft type — the Airbus A320 — reduces training costs and makes it cheaper to replace one.

Unlike Ryanair, though, Wizz isn’t content to fly exclusively short-haul. It can take you from Gatwick to Hurghada in Egypt or as far as Astana in Kazakhstan, Tashkent in Uzbekistan or the Maldives from its Abu Dhabi hub. There will also be an option to fly from Rome to India when its overdue A321XLRs are delivered.

Varadi predicts that by 2030 a quarter of Wizz Air’s business will come from destinations east of Abu Dhabi — and he says that fares will always be cheap. “People don’t want to be ripped off,” Varadi says. “We are producing capacity at costs lower than our competitors, and as a result we are able to apply very low fares to the market.”

As for those ancillary costs — add a 10kg cabin bag and a reserved seat to that £12.99 Faro flight and the price climbs to a still-not-unreasonable £38.99 — Varadi says: “There is no more democratic way of charging the customers because ancillaries unbundle the product and the passenger only pays for what they consume.”

So let’s take two jets: a blue Boeing and a pink Airbus. The seats are equally uncomfortable, the carry-on policy similarly draconian and the legroom a negligible inch greater with the Boeing. Both are taking off to the same destination at the same time, albeit, in some cases, from different airports in the London area. But which is cheapest?

I looked at the cost of high-season flights with Ryanair and Wizz to Malaga, Palma, Athens, Lisbon and Rome, departing on August 2 and returning on August 9, choosing a fare that included a 10kg carry-on and a reserved seat. In four out of five cases, Ryanair was the cheapest, by an average of £44.88, and in the case of the Palma flight it was £95 cheaper than the Wizz fare.

Ryanair was cheaper than Wizz Air by an average of £44.88 including flights to Malaga

Assuming that the cost of travel to different airports makes no real difference, all that matters — as O’Leary and Varadi agree — is the price of the ticket. And on that basis, the blue corner wins.

That said, Ryanair isn’t always the cheapest. A like-for-like Athens return was £275 with Jet2 — £135 cheaper than Ryanair — and the low-cost champ was also beaten on price to Lisbon and Rome by British Airways. Always use a flight-comparison site such as Skyscanner before booking.

• 26 of the best affordable holiday destinations for 2024

And as for the popularity contest, Ryanair is aware how bad press sells more seats, encouraging its wisecracking social-media teams to treat customer complaints with the disdain of an empire that knows — no matter how much we moan about them — we’ll still fill their flights.

“Ryanair is my No 1 enemy,” one furious passenger tweeted. “Always No 1,” the airline replied. And when the honeymooner Mark Bowe posted a picture of his bride sitting, disappointedly, in Ryanair’s infamous 11A seat — the window seat without a window — it replied: “She’s regretting marrying someone who can’t read the fine print.”

Wizz Air Revolutionizes Pilot Training with Virtual Reality Technology

Thursday, March 21, 2024 Favorite

wizz air

Wizz Air , renowned as Europe’s fastest-growing and most environmentally sustainable airline on a global scale, has achieved a significant milestone by becoming the pioneering airline to adopt both the Mobile Airbus Training experience (MATe) suite and Virtual Procedure Trainer (VPT) technology for pilot training.

This integration of cutting-edge training solutions at Wizz Air’s training center in Budapest marks a pivotal support system for pilots undergoing recurrent and initial Type Training. The amalgamation of MATe suite and Virtual Procedure Trainer brings forth a host of benefits. MATe, functioning as a cloud-based service platform, offers e-Training and examinations across various pilot training categories. Meanwhile, the Virtual Procedure Trainer stands out as an innovative software solution, providing immersive coaching within a virtual cockpit setting. This allows pilot trainees to rehearse and acquaint themselves with Airbus cockpit features and corresponding procedures individually. Notably, the VR tool and the A320 Type Transition Course programme, based on the utilization of the MATe tool, have received approval from the Hungarian Civil Aviation Authority. This endorsement ensures that Wizz Air can train its pilots to the exacting standards set by its Approved Training Organization (ATO).

The unveiling of these Virtual Reality-driven training features took place at Wizz Air’s training center in Budapest on March 20th, attracting attention from industry insiders. To coincide with the launch of this innovative training solution, Wizz Air conducted research revealing that a significant portion of respondents, comprising 24% of men and 11% of women, expressed confidence in their ability to successfully land a plane.

Wizz Air’s commitment to training excellence dates back to 2013 when it inaugurated its first training center in Budapest, equipped with an A320 Full Flight Simulator and classrooms. Since then, the airline has expanded its training facilities, opening a new center in Budapest in 2018 and slated to launch another in Rome this year. These training centers boast state-of-the-art equipment including three Airbus A320 Full Flight Simulators, A320 Fixed-base Simulators, Cabin Evacuation Trainers, and Fire Trainers. The introduction of virtual training solutions by Airbus represents the latest enhancement to Wizz Air’s Budapest training center.

Looking ahead, Wizz Air envisions substantial growth, aiming to train 4,000 flight deck crew members and accommodate 300 new A321neo aircraft and A321XLR aircraft by 2030 in alignment with its strategic objectives.

Attila Tóvári, Head of ATO at Wizz Air said : “We are incredibly pleased and grateful to have partnered with Airbus to create and receive CAA approval for our new programme and VR training tool. This market-leading technology will not only revolutionise the way we train our staff but the whole industry as well.

“We care deeply about our flight crews and we believe in investing in the best technology to achieve the highest and safest training standards in the market. Our flight and cabin crews are often the face of the airline to our passengers and we believe that these new tools will enable them to perform at the highest standard.”

Charbel Youzkatli, Head of Commercial Services Europe at Airbus, said:

“We are delighted to have Wizz Air as the first customer to use both Airbus digital VR-driven flight training solutions MATe Suite and VPT.

“These solutions will actively contribute to Wizz Air’s digital journey in the area of pilot training. MATe Suite and VPT training solutions offer pilots an immersive experience and more flexible and efficient training. This setup also allows optimizing the overall Type Rating course whilst maintaining the highest Airbus training standards.”

Wizz Air becomes the first airline to implement Airbus’ MATe Suite and VPT tech for pilot training

' src=

Wizz Air, Europe’s fastest-growing and most environmentally sustainable airline globally, has become the first airline to implement both the Mobile Airbus Training experience (MATe) suite and Virtual Procedure Trainer (VPT) technology for pilot training.

The integration of both training solutions at Wizz Air’s training center in Budapest will support pilots undergoing recurrent and initial Type Training through the combined benefits of MATe suite and the Virtual Procedure Trainer. While MATe is a cloud-based service platform with e-Training and exams for different pilot training categories, the Virtual Procedure Trainer is an innovative software solution that immerses and coaches pilot trainees within a virtual cockpit individually, allowing them to rehearse or familiarise themselves with the Airbus cockpit features and respective procedures. The VR tool and the A320 Type Transition Course programme (based on the use of MATe tool) have been approved by the Hungarian Civil Aviation Authority. It will enable Wizz Air to train pilots to the standards set by Wizz Air’s Approved Training Organization (ATO).

The Virtual Reality-driven training features have been presented to industry at Wizz Air’s training center in Budapest on the 20th of March. To support the launch of the new training solution, Wizz Air conducted research that showed that almost a quarter of men (24%) and 11% of women think they could land a plane.

Wizz Air opened its first training center in Budapest in 2013 with an A320 Full Flight Simulator and classrooms. Since then, the airline has opened a new training centre in Budapest in 2018 and will open another in Rome this year. The training centres are equipped with three Airbus A320 Full Flight Simulators, A320 Fixed-base Simulators, Cabin Evacuation Trainers, and Fire Trainers. The virtual training solutions by Airbus are the latest additions to Wizz Air’s training center in Budapest.

As Wizz Air looks towards growth, the airline plans to train 4,000 flight deck crew and to welcome 300 new A321neo aircraft and the A321XLR aircraft by 2030 to meet its goals.

Attila Tóvári, Head of ATO at Wizz Air said: “We are incredibly pleased and grateful to have partnered with Airbus to create and receive CAA approval for our new programme and VR training tool.

Charbel Youzkatli, Head of Commercial Services Europe at Airbus, said:“We are delighted to have Wizz Air as the first customer to use both Airbus digital VR-driven flight training solutions MATe Suite and VPT.“These solutions will actively contribute to Wizz Air’s digital journey in the area of pilot training. MATe Suite and VPT training solutions offer pilots an immersive experience and more flexible and efficient training. This setup also allows optimizing the overall Type Rating course whilst maintaining the highest Airbus training standards.”

Simple Flying

Why is wizz air operating domestic flights within the united states.

Above the skies in the United States on April 1st, a new low cost carrier appeared. Although, these were not regularly scheduled flights. Instead, Wizz Air flew a few domestic flights in the United States as part of a broader mission of repatriation flights.

Domestic US flights

Wizz Air flew a few domestic US legs on April 1st as part of a broader repatriation mission  using brand new Airbus A321neo aircraft . This included a roundtrip between New York and Los Angeles and another between Chicago and Miami.

Some were able to catch pictures of the aircraft landing in the United States – a major first for Wizz Air. Here are some shots from the aircraft's arrival in JFK.

A little more sun greeted Wizz Air's A321neo in Los Angeles.

Why Wizz Air flew these legs

The United States is not a country that sees regular service from Wizz Air. Although, these flights were incredibly important. Wizz Air flew these legs as part of repatriation flights working to get passengers home.

The A321neo seats 239 passengers in an all-economy configuration. These are the largest aircraft in Wizz Air's fleet by passenger capacity. There are no business class products onboard – Wizz Air believes a single-class configuration is more environmentally friendly.

The A321neo is not the LR or XLR version. As a result, the aircraft cannot do transatlantic flights directly out of Budapest to Miami or New York. As a result, the aircraft had to make a stop in Iceland along the way. The domestic tag flights , however, are likely to pick up additional passengers.

Could Wizz Air fly to the United States again someday?

Given the current situation in the aviation world, it is highly unlikely that Wizz Air would consider an expansion to the United States anytime soon. Even in the future, however, it could be unlikely for Wizz Air to launch flights. Although, the airline does have a sizable number of A321XLR aircraft on order.

However, the airline has been tight-lipped about long-haul operations to the United States. Instead, executives at the airline seem a little more interested in "connecting the dots" in the airline's route network.

Long-haul low-cost is not an instantly successful market– take Norwegian for example. And, some American low-cost carriers are also considering the potential for a transatlantic expansion perhaps dampening Wizz Air's appeal.

In a very unique situation, Wizz Air flew some domestic flights within the US . As part of a broader repatriation mission, the European low-cost carrier is focused on getting passengers home. Although, these may likely be the last Wizz Air flights to the United States (or North America) for the time being.

Did you see Wizz Air's aircraft in the US? Were you on one of these US flights? Let us know in the comments!

Simple Flying reached out to Wizz Air for further information. The airline was not immediately available for comment. This article will be updated accordingly.
