Dolphin Swim at DOLPHINARIS in COZUMEL Review

By: Author tanialamb

Posted on Published: June 21, 2022

Dolphinaris in Cozumel was a fun cruise excursion on our last Disney Cruise. My family and I booked a Disney Cruise Line cruise on the Fantasy in January 2022. Our original itinerary got changed last-minute, so we had to find some new excursions. We tried the Dolphin Swim at Dolphinaris in Cozumel, and we had an amazing time! We were celebrating my daughter’s quinceañera, so we splurged a little bit, but for us, Dolphinaris was worth the money.

Dolphinaris Disney Cruise Line Excursion Cozumel

Dolphin Swim at Dolphinaris in Cozumel

Are you looking for cruise excursions in Cozumel? Our first cruise we did a beach day, which was fun, but this time we wanted something different. Not everyone in your party has to book the Dolphin Swim to participate. A couple of my kids were nervous about swimming with the Dolphins, and I wanted to book the Dolphin encounter for the younger ones, but there weren’t enough participants. That’s where you get to go to the pool and still interact with the dolphins for a little bit, but not swim with them.

How to Book Your Dolphin Excursion on Disney Cruise Line

I was trying to do some research on the Dolphin excursions in Cozumel and Costa Maya. Without buying a Disney cruise line wifi package, I had limited time. After seeing the facility for the Dolphin swim at the Costa Maya port, I’m glad we chose Dolphinaris.

You can book the Disney Cruise Line app or you can go to the Excursions desk on the ship. Some activities will sell out, so it’s best to make up your mind quickly. We were able to book last-minute, because the ship wasn’t sailing at full capacity.

We also booked our younger daughters and my husband as Observers. So they could observe from the deck on top

Once you book your day and time, you’ll meet your group on the ship and walk out together. We were reminded that we had to come back together as a group or we may not be able to get back on the ship. I’m not sure if that had to do with Covid restrictions.

Then you’ll meet your Dolphinaris guide, and they drive you in shuttles to Dolphinaris which was about a 10-minute ride.

Dolphinaris Cozumel Dolphin Swim and Observer Review

When we arrived, you can purchase a locker rental for your belongings while you swim with the Dolphins. We did not get one, because we had observers, so we were able to stay all out belongings.

You’re then taken to your Pod. This was ours, and we had a good view from the observation deck.

Dolphinaris Dolphin Swim in Cozumel

The views are lovely, as this is another pool right next to ours. I think there are about 5 of them, but they are close together and a controlled area.

Dolphinaris in Cozumel

The participants will also get life jackets, and there’s a bar with free drinks. The kids and I loved the non-alcoholic smoothies. Although the drinks are included with the experience, we did tip the bartenders.

Finally, they called the participants in each group. There were about 10 total, and some were from different ships.

Dolphinaris Dolphin Swim Review

Our guide was cool with us taking pictures and video from the observation desk while the kids participated. However, if everyone in your party is down in the pool, then you’d have to rely on the photographers at the facility for any photos.

You do spend some time greeting the dolphins and petting them. If you were to only pay for the Dolphin Encounter, then you would participate in these activities.

Dolphin Encounter at Dolphinaris Cozumel

You’ll also get a dolphin kiss!

Dolphin Kiss at Dolphinaris

This picture we paid for and obviously is much better quality than my iPhone from above.

Then you’ll get a chance to be in the pool and get acquainted with the dolphins while they swim around you and can touch them as they pass by.

Each person in the group will then get their opportunity to be in the middle of the pool and grab onto the dolphin fin as it swims by. The dolphin will then pull you to the shore. The dolphins have different personalities, so some are faster than others. A couple of my daughters got a really fast ride with water in their face, while another got a more slow-paced leisurely ride.

Altogether it was about 45 minutes in the water.

After that, you can grab lunch at the restaurant that was also included in our package with Disney Cruise Line. The tip was not included. The food was pretty good! My whole family found something they enjoyed.

Then we had a little bit of time left, so they let us do some snorkeling in a little cove at Dolphinaris. There were a lot of fish, but the water was cold! However, we were also there in January.

Snorkeling at Dolphinaris

When time was up, we met up with out group again, traveled by shuttle to the port and walked back together to the Disney Fantasy.

Is Dolphinaris Dolphin Swim Worth the Price with Disney Cruise Line?

I don’t like to spend money where I don’t have to, but Dolphinaris in Cozumel was well worth it for our family. You can do it cheaper by booking online in advance and taking a taxi to and from the facility from the port. However, for the peace of mind of not worrying about transportation or whether the weather would effect our port excursions, it was worth the extra cost. Plus our guide from Dolphinaris was excellent, and I think that makes a difference.

I recommend bringing cash for tips as there weren’t convenient ATM options around.

The photo packages are expensive, but there are different options you can choose from, and they were willing to negotiate on price. You can look through the pictures before deciding, so you can figure out the cost benefit to you.

We had a fabulous time and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend the Dolphinaris Dolphin Swim at Cozumel.

Positive Experience for All!

This was an excursion with our Royal Caribbean Cruise trip. Our family, which included adult parents, kids ages 11, 9, 6, 5, all participated in the All-Inclusive VIP Dolphin Encounter. The Grandparents took the 'Observer-onboard only' option. We were all very pleased with the experience! The Staff was very helpful with directions at the water and with the dolphin encounters. The food was good and plentiful. The drinks were appreciated! The Waiters went out of their way to accommodate our larger group and multiple requests. We didn't buy the photos, but the Grandparents were able to take good pictures from the Observation areas.

The guy organizing the line “kristian” seemed to select who was going to get “special” experiences with the dolphins based on personal preferences. He notifies them by whispering in their ear they were selected by him and ask them to not say anything to the others in the groups.. hard to keep secret when there’s quite a few people standing close together. Unfortunately we were not in his special groups and we were made to stand in the water with a group of 14 other people, only to interact with the dolphin for 30-90 sec so they could take the picture, which is their real money making avenue. The pictures are $40 each photo. It’s crazy, the staff were not great. Most sad was the dolphin had a huge cut down her face and it made me wonder how they were captured and treated behind the scenes..you are not allowed to take your own pictures so I guess they control the potential PR damage.. so sad

What a great excursion. As somewhat frequent cruisers we had done many of the excursions offered on Celebrity or ones very similar. This one was perfect for multiple reasons. Firstly it was short only taking up half our day which allowed us to do some shopping and then get back to the ship to enjoy the amenities on board. Secondly the trip there is a very short taxi ride. Often the excursion requires an hour or more bus or ferry ride and we didn't want to use half of our shore time in transit. Most importantly the experience was amazing. The staff was friendly and fun. The 4 drinks we made were great. Even my wife who doesn't like mixed drinks loved the Jalepeno/Rosemary marg. Can't recommend this excursion enough if your are looking for a nice short shore experience.

The time spent with the dolphins was great fun for all, and our guide, Alex, we outstanding. The ride on the belly of the dolphin, while it swims upside-down, was unbelievable, but make sure you hold on tight to the dolphin fins, and they are STRONG swimmers. This would be a 5-star review except for one major flaw: they charge $42 for ONE PHOTO, and if you want more than one, you must spend over $150 for "the package" The worst part is that the resolution of all the photos is so very poor, that you can barely see the face of the person in the picture. They will NOT allow you to bring any cameras so you are stuck buying their poor quality ones for ripoff prices.

Thank you for taking the time to leave us a review and for bringing these issues to our attention. We are sorry that your experience at Dolphinaris did not meet your expectations. Your feedback is invaluable to us as it helps us to identify areas for improvement and aspire to do better for our guests. We will be sure to share your comments with the team and make the necessary changes to ensure that our guests have a more enjoyable experience in the future. We hope that you will consider giving us another chance to show you how we have improved.

I highly recommend this place. Our host Leyser was top notch and we could not have asked for better. The wait staff, bartenders, and trainers were great also. As for the show, the dolphins were magnificent and well trained. We purchased the VIP package from our cruise excursion and it was worth every penny. From the time we met at the front of the port was marvelous. Once again I must mention Leyser our host went above and beyond Snorkeling in their private area was also enjoyable. The after show lunch was very good with many selections. When we make it back to Cozumel we will definitely being doing another visit.

Thank you for taking the time to leave us such a wonderful review on Trip Advisor! We are thrilled to hear that your visit with us was so memorable and enjoyable. Your kind words about our staff are greatly appreciated, and we will be sure to pass them along. We hope to see you again soon for another amazing experience at Dolphinaris.

Unbelievable. I booked and paid online - for $260 for 4 - to swim with dolphins. I checked this. When we showed up half an hour early as instructed, we first had to cajole entry because I simply brought cash in a waterproof bag, and they wanted to xerox my ID. Then we paid $15 for a locker rental, used the disgusting bathroom, and waited 90 minutes to be called. At that point, they took my 3 kids and me and told us you just get to stand on a platform, not swim with the dolphins. When I complained, the answer was go pay more. They simply could not handle, from start to finish, anyone who had booked directly vs via a cruise ship (we were not on a cruise). I let my kids stand on the platform while I wrote this review. All the wait time allowed us to see the dolphins are bored and playing with only a buoy inbetween when they are being worked repetitively. Taxis, entrance, and locker got to US$300 for an hour late for something we didn’t get. Avoid this time-sucking ripoff.

Excursion Review: Cozumel Dolphin Discovery Through Disney Cruise Line

January 24, 2018 by Disney Cruise Mom 1 Comment

This trip report was written by Gunes, who sailed the Disney Magic December 24, 2017, through December 29, 2017. You can also read her stateroom review here (a concierge 1 bedroom suite!) and her review of cabana #20 on Castaway Cay here .

I was very excited that we would be traveling to Mexico on this cruise. I had visited Cozumel previously when I was a teenager, cruising with my family onboard a Holland America ship (this was way before Disney Cruise Line even existed!). During that visit, we tendered to Playa del Carmen and did a fantastic excursion to the Tulum Mayan ruins and Xel-Ha , a beautiful brackish water lagoon where we snorkeled. At the end of the excursion, we boarded the ship in Cozumel, where it had docked after dropping us off (and this was at night: it was quite a long day).

My husband had never been to Mexico and neither had my six-year-old son. I would have loved to have returned to Tulum, but that excursion would have been brutal with a young child, as it involves a long day of travel (e.g., ferry boat rides, walking, bus trip). So, in researching excursions, I tried to find something to do relatively close to the port of Cozumel.

I was torn between the two excursions that Disney Cruise Mom had done during her previous visits to Cozumel: the ship-sponsored Dolphin Discovery port adventure and her self-guided visit to the private Nachi Cocom beach club . I was a little hesitant about the Dolphin Discovery excursion , as I didn’t know whether my son would freak out with a dolphin next to him in the water. I also was hesitant about Nachi Cocom , as I wasn’t sure whether I felt comfortable taking a taxi on our own to the beach club.

In the end, I decided on the Dolphin Discovery excursion, but after our experience, I wish I had been brave about the taxi and gone to Nachi Cocom instead. You’ll find out why later in my review.

In booking the excursion, we had a choice of three or four times in the morning when we could leave. I decided on the 9:45 am departure time so that we weren’t rushed in the morning. We met up with the Disney port adventure folks in the D Lounge on the Magic around 9:30 am or so. While waiting to leave, we picked up a bunch of towels (maybe six of them), as they had a huge stack on a table near the door. I’m glad I brought all those towels (even though it was a pain to lug them around), as we ended up using all of them while ashore. (Any time you go ashore to a beach or any place where you may get wet, bring at least two towels per person, along with a giant bag – e.g., a garbage bag – to more easily carry the towels.)

Once we disembarked, the Disney cast member handed the group over to one of the shore excursion guides. He (initially) was an entertaining and nice guy, and his name was Diego. He led us along the pier and through a shopping area, where he then had us board multiple group taxis. These actually are the same licensed taxis (all of them are white vehicles) that any tourist can take around the island of Cozumel. (Like Disney Cruise Mom, I tried to use the Bubble Bum inflatable booster seat for my son, but the taxi cab driver was booking it out of there, and I really did not have a chance to properly install it. Boo!) Diego got into the last taxi, and we all caravanned to Chankanaab Beach Adventure Park , which is where the Dolphin Discover excursion is held.

I felt like it took forever for us to walk along the pier, get into the taxis, ride for 15 minutes to the park, get out and wait for everyone, and then be told all the instructions we needed to know to do the dolphin encounter. Because the group was large, Diego purposely was trying to be slow and make sure everyone was together, but he really could have sped things up a bit. With all the waiting around, we did not get into the water with the dolphins until at least 11:15 am. Also, I was put off a little bit when Diego talked about how he has a family and really would appreciate a tip – what??? I’ve seen tour guides beg for tips before, and I find it to be quite crass and inappropriate. I’ll tip for good service, not if a person begs me for money.

Anyway, I digress…we were told that we needed to put all of our stuff in a locker (cameras or smartphones are not allowed during the encounter). Afterwards, we all put on life vests. Then, they broke us up into groups of 10 or so to do the actual dolphin encounter.

Here is a photo of the dolphin enclosure area. As you can see, it is out in the open water, which makes it a bit challenging when you feel the waves coming in from passing boats or just the normal tide.

The people on the outside of the smaller enclosures are doing the “Dolphin Swim” encounter. There was no way we could do that with our young child, so we opted for the standard dolphin encounter.

Once the dolphin trainer was ready for us, we descended down some stairs into the COLD water where there is an underwater platform on which you stand. The platform is kind of slippery, so wear water shoes, if possible. We all wore our water shirts, but I was the only one wearing a long-sleeved water shirt. The dolphin trainer (named Jessica) wore a long-sleeved water shirt, so she knew what she was doing! The long-sleeves made a huge difference for me. My son (unfortunately wearing his short-sleeve water shirt) was shivering after being in the water for a while, and I constantly had to hug him to keep him warm.

We were in the water longer than I expected. I don’t know for sure, but I think we were in there for 30-45 minutes. I thought it only would last 15 minutes, so that was a good thing in terms of value for our money. My husband and I enjoyed the dolphin encounter, but my son was not so enthusiastic. Even though we got him hyped up and excited about it before the trip, he started freaking out when the dolphins inadvertently splashed him. Also, the water is pretty deep (I’m about 5’4”, and it came up to my chest), so I constantly was holding on to my son (who is 48” tall) and trying to make sure he didn’t float away with the waves off the platform. Standing on the slippery platform, even with my water shoes, it was kind of hard to balance because of the constant influx of waves. There were a few other kids (even younger than my son) who were crying a lot, so I’m not so sure this is the best excursion for young kids. I thought my son would be OK with it, but he surprised me (in a bad way).

One thing to note (especially for young kids), there are some fish that swim around you in the water, as well as small crabs. A crab almost went onto my son’s neck during the encounter, while another one was hanging out on the back of my husband’s shoulder (at least only touching his water shirt) during his interaction with the dolphin (he didn’t notice it). The crab thing wasn’t a big deal for me or my husband, but my son surely did not like it!

As I mentioned before, my husband and I really enjoyed interacting with the dolphins. We were lucky to have both a mommy (named “Olympia”) and a baby (named “Beethoven”) in the enclosure with us. Jessica did a good job telling us what we needed to do to make sure we properly interacted with the mommy. We were not supposed to touch the baby, as the mommy could get aggressive if she perceived us as a threat. At the time, I didn’t think much of it, but should they really have a nursing dolphin mommy interacting with humans if she might be a threat to them?

Here are some photos of me doing some “tricks” with Olympia:

The dolphin tricks were fun, but it really begs the question: why are we making dolphins do tricks? In deciding on this excursion, I had this ethical debate going on in my head about whether or not this was a good idea just due to the fact that these dolphins are being kept in captivity, partly to entertain humans. I am not a SeaWorld fan (I’ve seen killer whales in the wild in Alaska – which is where they belong!). I also have a love/hate relationship with zoos (pros: educate the public, encourage conservation, rehabilitate animals; cons: potentially bad conditions for animals (especially the larger ones), it’s just plain wrong to keep a wild animal in captivity). My son absolutely loves animals (and so do we), so I wanted us to all somehow meet these fantastic sea animals. I took a little solace in the fact that Chankanaab is (supposedly) dedicated to research, education, and conservation . Also, Jessica was a fantastic trainer, and I could tell she really loved these animals and was trying to make sure we shared her love and learned about these precious creatures.

After the encounter was over, we were told that we needed to go review all the photos taken by the park’s staff photographer. We were not really allowed to go back to the locker room and change, which meant for a harrowing experience after leaving the water. The photo viewing area was air conditioned, and we were freezing in our wet bathing suites! I noticed that some folks actually brought their towels with them to the dolphin encounter. We put everything in the lockers – we should have brought a few with us to wrap around ourselves after the encounter. Oh well!

While we were shivering, the photo lady tried all sorts of hard-sell negotiation tactics to try to get us to buy the most expensive photo package. I originally was just going to buy four photo prints (at $35 per print!?!), but she said, “Don’t tell anyone, but I’m going to offer you all the digital photos on CD, digital access to all the photos on our website, and three photo prints for $250!” Her original offer was $350. When I told her no thank-you (again), suddenly the price dropped to $200. Hmmmm…four photos for $140, or EVERYTHING (60 photos) for $200. OK – deal!

She took our information down and said the photos would be ready in 15 minutes or so. We went to the locker room and changed (the locker room is unisex, but there are private stalls where you can change; there also are separate men’s and women’s restrooms.). We were STARVING, as it was around 12:30pm at that point. Chankanaab has a lot of eating options, including snack bars and a full-service restaurant. I was a bit nervous about eating and drinking in Mexico (we all know about Montezuma’s revenge). I made sure to bring a lot of snack items and bottled water off of the ship. We still decided to order some food from the restaurant: nachos and a cheese quesadilla. My son also wanted some type of Mexican version of Oreo cookies, so we bought that at the large gift shop.

So, this is the main reason why I did NOT like Chankanaab: it seemed very commercialized AND it was super, super crowded! It was not crowded when we arrived, but when we were done with the dolphin encounter, there were masses of people waiting around to start their own dolphin encounters. I suspect that the main reason for the crowdedness was the fact that there were SIX cruise ships in port that day. For the next time that I do a shore excursion, I will be sure to research ahead of time to see how many ships will be in port (you can use this website to research ports all around the world and see how many ships will be joining you at your destination). Nachi Cocom likely was much less crowded that day. They have a daily admission limit of 130 people! I’m sure there were at least several hundred people at Chankanaab the day that we visited.

When I initially researched Chankanaab, I was excited to see that there was a beautiful beach on the premises. Well, after seeing how crowded it the park had become, the first thing we wanted to do after eating our lunch was to go back to the ship. Diego had told us that taxis could take us back to the ship at 1:00pm, 2:00pm, 3:00pm, and 3:30pm. We made sure to hustle in order to make the 2:00pm return trip. We did NOT want to spend another minute at this super-crowded park.

At 2:00pm, Diego procured a large group taxi for us and another family, and we were driven back to the shopping area (without Diego, as he stayed behind to coordinate the later group taxis). Without me knowing, my good-Samaritan husband gave Diego a $5 tip. Diego really was a good guy but for the fact that he demanded a tip!

In the taxi cab, I once again had no time to properly install the booster seat. The cab driver took us back to the port shopping area but did not drop us off at the taxi cab stand area where we had initially boarded. He literally stopped on the side of the road and told us we had to get out right then and there – huh? Anyway, it was a little strange, but we were glad to get out and go back to the ship.

Next time I’m in Cozumel, if my son is still young (e.g., under the age of 10), I’ll go to Nachi Cocom and have a relaxing beach afternoon. Otherwise, if he is older, I really would like to go back to Tulum and see some of what I consider the “real” Mexico (not an over-commercialized and crowded-with-tourists beach park).

But, I don’t want to end on a sour note, so here is a fun dolphin photo – viva Mexico!

We did a dolphin encounter in Grand Cayman with my 8 year old son. He also did not really enjoy it. This was partly poor judgement on my part as he does not like petting zoos or interactions with animals in general. I just didn’t really think about this being basically a petting zoo in the water. Also, ours was in not clear water and you couldn’t see the bottom of the area under our little platform, so he was terrified of falling off the platform. My parents and I enjoyed it though :). Looking forward to the rest of the trip report!

Hello! We cruise next month (YAY!) and one of our stops is Cozumel. We currently have the Dolphin Swim in Chankanaab (CZ50) booked. It is myself, my husband and our 2 kids who are 5 and 8. I was looking today and there is another Dolphin Swim Encounter at Dolphinaris (CZ38) available. Does anyone have any thoughts on which one would be the better one to do or have experiences with either? The prices are very comparable so we're open to either we just want this to be super memorable for our kids. Thanks!

We went to the same place that you have booked in 2017. We chose it because there is a lot to do there afterwards. They have a pool, beach, sealion show, Mayan ruins replica, a tequila hut(we were given free samples), a restaurant, and more. All is included in the price you pay for the dolphins. The other place only has a restaurant and I think a pool, I haven't been to it. We really enjoyed our time when we were at Chankanaab.

We loved our experiences at Chankanaab. We've been twice. We booked independently though so hope you're getting enough time there with DCL - so much more to do than just the dolphin encounter/swim.

Chankanaab is FANTASTIC!!! we did the manatee swim and it was so nice!! the grounds are beautiful with a really nice pool and beach. There so much to do there! There's no real need to go through the boat on this. There are cabs that will take you to Chankanaab for a flat fee at the port, you can book the swim directly, and there is always a line of cabs waiting to take people back to the port. We loved it because we weren't being harassed by people the entire time!! i twas very peaceful and a lot of fun!

We went to Dolphinaris and it was PACKED. We did the VIP tour (which was great) but walked through the main area at one point and based on the volume of people there I think we would have been disappointed had we been in that area. The people who worked there as a whole were great and the area is nice but way too crowded. They did also have a snorkeling area but it was small, cloudy and there weren’t many fish.

Thanks for all the feedback. I think we will keep the one we have. I did look into booking it through the site on my own but it's not available. I wonder if it's because we are in Cozumel on a Sunday and they aren't typically open on Sundays.

Earning My Ears

You already decided, but agreed 100% with Chankanaab, it is fantastic!

Taking a cruise in Oct. 09 and was wondering if anyone has done the swim with dolphins at either Dolphinaris or Dolphin Discovery in Chankanaab National Park. Please give me the run down and your experience.

Our kids were 10, 6 and almost 2 when we went on our 1st cruise on May 30th.

~~We did the Dolphin Encounter in Cozumel and it was great! We booked it ourselves instead of through Disney as it was much cheaper. Our youngest 2 children were free and Chankanaab itself was a beautiful park with lots to do. Pool, lagoon, beach, playground, walking trails and very clean facilities. We can't wait to go again...next time we'll skip the DE and just spend the day at the park! We LOVED it!

LMK if you have any other questions!

I am also trying to figure out which Dolphin excursion to do in Cozumel. Any more opinions out there?

Hey I noticed you said you did it outside of disney excursion which is what we want to do. How did you get from port to there???

We did the Dune Buggy/Snorkeling excursion through Disney. Had a ball!

Me, my mom, and nephew (12) rented a dune buggy and cruised 1/2 of the island and the other half after lunch. We had a guided snorkeling tour of an awesome coral reef and then had 1 hour to snorkel on our own. Enjoyed a wonderful authentic mexican lunch and pinata smashing.

The scenery was gorgeous with the turquoise water, rolling waves, and beautiful sunny day. Enjoyed the entire day! Highly recom. this excursion.

Happy Sailing.

There are cabs and vans waiting to take you there at the port!

We did Chankanaab on our own last week on a Carnival itinerary. Taxi fare was $25 each way with tip for the six of us and about 10 minutes each way. All taxi fares are posted at the stands at the pier and closely regulated.

We opted not do do the dolphin experience but did the entrance/snorkel/t-shirt package for $28 per adult and $20 per kid. The dolphin experience looked pretty good. Chankanaab is great. The beach is clean, it has a fresh water pool and ample restroom and shower facilities. Try the ceviche with octopus, Mmmmm.

we did the Chakanabee royal dolphin swim in April. I would highly recommend this. I booked independently thru Chakanabee, once you get off the ship you go take a WHITE taxi, (they will stress this on the port talk). The park is beautiful with a gorgeous beach and a wonderful large pool. I will try to attach a few pics. This was an incredible experience. Don't miss it!

Add me to the list of folks who booked independently of the cruise line--we loved the Dolphin experience at Chakanaab, as well as the park itself.

Taxis are reasonable and pretty safe in Coz, and when you leave the park they have someone getting taxis for you.

I'd book it again, independently, just like last time. When you book on your own you get to spend time in the park, as the dolphin experience includes admission to the park. Spend some time there--it is very nice. I don't recall lifeguards though--so keep that in mind if you decide to snorkel.

Visiting Cozumel on Disney Cruise Line

A frequent stop for Disney Cruise Line on Western Caribbean itineraries has always been Cozumel, Mexico. Cozumel is a small island off of the coast of Mexico in the Caribbean Sea. It has mild temperatures all year round, making it a great spot to visit on a Caribbean cruise. Cozumel now has several piers which dock cruise ships, so it may help to do a quick check on the internet to see where your ship plans to dock before you leave on your cruise. (I recommend http://www.cozumelinsider.com/CruiseShips ).

Due to the mild temperatures and calm seas, Cozumel is a perfect place for a beach adventure. Disney Cruise Line will usually offer at least one beach excursion through its shore excursions desk. Alternatively, it is just a short (approximately 15 minute) taxi ride to get to one of several beaches near the port. Whether you’re looking for an “all inclusive” beach with wate rsports and lunch included or a spot with a la carte options, Cozumel has you covered. We have found no shortage of pleasant beaches with restrooms, shopping and food all available.

Cozumel1

Authentic Mexican food delivered to us right on the beach!

Along this same vein, Cozumel is known for its snorkeling and SCUBA opportunities. Throughout most of the year, the water on the west side of the island is clear and calm, making it an optimal place to peer around underwater.   Be careful though- water on the east side of the island can be much less friendly to swimmers. The views there can be stunning, but it’s best to limit swimming to the western beaches.

Cozumel2

One of the most popular activities on Cozumel is swimming with dolphins, which can be done within Cozumel’s National Marine Park at Chankanaab Beach Adventure Park. This particular park offers a calm beach, botanical gardens, a small replica Mayan village and museum, and many animal interaction activities including the dolphins. Since this area is so popular, I highly recommend buying your activity tickets in advance and/or through the ship’s shore excursions department.

Another very popular destination for tourists is Tulum. Please keep in mind, a trip to Tulum is a full day affair, involving a ferry ride of approximately one hour in either direction and a good deal of walking once you arrive. Also, the site charges a fee for bringing video cameras to Tulum. The Mayan ruins are a beautiful and educational experience to see though.

Cozumel3

Hair braiding is offered all over the island and is inexpensive

If those excursions seem more strenuous or time consuming than you’re interested in, I highly recommend the shopping in Cozumel. The downtown area is very accessible by taxi, or possibly through walking if you’re docked at a close enough pier.

Although you’re likely to find many of the same shops that are scattered throughout the Caribbean, I’ve found the silver and turquoise jewelry in Cozumel to be a particularly good value and quality. They also have a great variety of textiles (blankets and dresses can be colorful and well priced), pottery (often with handmade designs), and vanilla.   Cozumel is a safe area to walk around and sales are rather low pressure for Mexico, but you can still haggle with shop owners and vendors. The currency is the Mexican Peso, and although most locations will take credit cards, it may be a good idea to exchange some dollars for pesos before you leave home.

Cozumel5

We walked into town- wheelchair and all

Overall, Cozumel is a great stop when traveling on the Disney Cruise Line.

Have you stopped in Cozumel before? What are your favorite activities?
