The eras tour was taylor swift’s biggest outing yet, but it was far from her first, tell them how the crowds went wild....

Taylor Swift Eras Tour Reputation Era via Taylor Swift Productions and Silent House Productions

City by city, song by song, Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour has quickly become of the highest-grossing (and buzziest) tours in music history. Spanning the entire length of Swift’s discography, Taylor honors each of her previous musical/aesthetic “eras” with a dedicated section on her setlist, allowing fans to relive the feeling of each album, if only for a moment.

But while the Eras Tour brings each album together on one mega-tour, it’s hardly the first time Taylor has been around, or even the first time she’s embarked on a stadium tour. From humble beginnings to sold-out shows across the globe, here’s a breakdown of all of Taylor Swift’s tours, in chronological order.

Fearless Tour

As most Swifties know, Taylor’s first album was a self-titled country pop record with singles like “Teardrops on My Guitar,” “Our Song,” and “Tim McGraw.” Taylor did tour during the release of Taylor Swift, but not as a headliner—she supported her first album by performing as an opening act for larger artists at the time like Tim McGraw, Brad Paisley, Faith Hill, and Keith Urban.

But while Taylor Swift was her first album, it wasn’t her first tour—that honor belongs to the Fearless Tour, which kicked off in April 2009 and ran through July 2010. The tour played a total of 105 shows (mostly across North America) including limited stops in Asia, Europe, and Australia. Kellie Pickler joined Taylor as an opening act, with artists like then-boyfriend John Mayer, Katy Perry, and Faith Hill appearing at certain performances as surprise guests. Though the tour didn’t get a concert film, Taylor Swift: Journey to Fearless was released as a 3-episode docuseries, documenting the behind-the-scenes of the tour.

Speak Now World Tour

Taylor’s first proper world tour, the Speak Now World Tour , began in February 2011 and featured a total of 111 performances, including seven in Asia and 12 in Europe. In addition to being her first world tour, Speak Now was also Taylor’s first stadium tour and featured more extensive set pieces, choreography, and costuming than the Fearless tour. Speak Now ‘s openers included NeedToBreathe, Hunter Hayes, and Hot Chelle Rae, and it was the first Taylor tour attended by yours truly. A concert film, Taylor Swift: Speak Now World Tour Live , was recorded to accompany the tour.

The Red Tour

Two years later, Taylor was back on the road with the Red Tour, which kicked off in March of 2013 and ran through June of 2014, with a total of 86 performances across the globe. In addition to continuing to bump up the tour’s production value through costuming, choreography, and set design, the Red tour also featured the introduction of surprise songs, which changed night-to-night. Certain Red tour dates also featured Taylor bringing out a surprise guest and singing one of their songs as a duet. Highlights of Red tour guests included Taylor singing “Jenny From the Block” with Jennifer Lopez, “You’re So Vain” with Carly Simon, and “My Songs Know What You Did in the Dark” with Fall Out Boy’s Patrick Stump.

Unlike previous installments, there was no concert film version of the Red tour.

The 1989 World Tour

Following Red was the 1989 World Tour, beginning in May 2015 and ending December of the same year for a total of 85 shows. The 1989 World Tour featured the return of the Surprise Songs mechanic, and hosted Vance Joy, Shawn Mendes, Rae Morris, and Haim as opening acts. Haim would also go on to return as an opening act for the Eras Tour, as well as guest star in the Bejeweled music video and feature on an evermore track.

One of the tour stops in Sydney was recorded for a concert film version of the tour called The 1989 World Tour Live —prior to the Eras Tour, that Sydney performance held the record for Swift’s most-attended performance, with 75,980 Swifties in attendance.

Reputation Stadium Tour

Though Taylor had previously performed at plenty of stadiums on tour, the Reputation Stadium Tour was Swift’s first all-stadium tour, playing May through November of 2018 for a total of 53 shows—her shortest tour to date. Openers for reputation included Camila Cabello, Charli XCX, and Broods, some of whom would join Taylor during the set for “Shake it Off.” As with her previous tours, reputation featured surprise songs at each show and a number of surprise guests at certain performances, this time including Troye Sivan, Selena Gomez, and Niall Horan.

A performance in Arlington was recorded for a concert film called Taylor Swift: Reputation Stadium Tour , which was released by (but recently taken off of) Netflix. Fans speculate that reputation leaving Netflix could be related to the fact that Taylor has yet to re-record her masters for reputation .

A sixth tour, Lover Fest, was originally scheduled for April through August of 2020, but was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The tour would’ve featured Swift’s then-first performance in Brazil, and would also have been the first time Swift’s tour dates included stops at previously organized festivals. Because there was no tour, there’s no Lover concert film, but Swift did release City of Lover , a recording of a one-off concert in Paris, as a tv special in May of 2020.

The Eras Tour

Last but certainly not least is, of course, The Eras Tour , which is currently ongoing and kicked off in March of 2023. We’ve previously done a full breakdown of the Eras setlist, which features glimpses into all of Swift’s previous albums, but focuses most heavily on those she was unable to tour because of COVID— Lover, folklore, evermore, and Midnights. A concert film, Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour , was released in theaters and is currently available to rent on streaming.

Brad Paisley shared the ultimate throwback video in honor of Taylor Swift ’s birthday on Wednesday (December 13). Paisley took to TikTok to share a snippet of the music video for his 2007 single, “ Online ,” which featured fellow country star Kellie Pickler and now a global pop titan, Swift.

Pickler and Swift danced on stage as Paisley sang that he’s “so much cooler online.” Some TikTok users wrote in the comments that they, “remember seeing (Swift) and Kellie opening for (Paisley) so long ago!” Others wrote, “omg i remember this now! wow core memory unlocked,” “this bings back so many memories,” and “I forgot she was in this!!! lol.”

“Happy birthday [Taylor Swift]! Thanks for being a background singer in one of my music videos all those years ago!” Paisley wrote in his caption on the nostalgic video.

Swift invited social media to “ troll me all you want about my excessive and literal millennial emoji use ,” in the caption of her birthday post on Wednesday. The world-famous powerhouse, recently named TIME’s Person of the Year in 2023 (country star Kenny Chesney also paid tribute to Swift ), plugged Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour  movie in her post: “I had the time of my life fighting dragons with youuuu 🫶 Celebrate 34 with me by watching The Eras Tour (Extended Version) including ‘Long Live’ 🐉 ‘The Archer’ 🏹 and ‘Wildest Dreams’ 🩵 at home! PS troll me all you want about my excessive and literal millennial emoji use but A) no one’s prouder to be a millennial and B) it’s my bday and today I am exempt! 🎂”

Jason Alexander Recalls Putting Taylor Swift in Her First Music Video on ‘The View’: “Her Success is All Me”

‘jeopardy’ contestant quips that they’re “gonna get killed” after all three contestants can’t scrounge up taylor swift’s “fifteen”, taylor swift’s ‘eras tour’ on disney+ includes these four bonus acoustic songs, stream it or skip it: ‘taylor swift: the eras tour’ on disney+, “taylor’s version” of the superstar’s hit concert film.

Long before Taylor Swift was selling out stadiums across the globe, she was a mere extra in a Brad Paisley music video — and Seinfeld star Jason Alexander , who also appeared in the video, recalled working when a then-teenage Swift during his visit to this morning’s episode of The View .

( Editor’s Note: The View is currently on hiatus , not cancelled ; this article was originally published on June 27, 2023, when this episode first aired. The View will return with new episodes in September 2023.)

While chatting with co-hosts Whoopi Goldberg , Sara Haines , Joy Behar , Sunny Hostin and Alyssa Farah Griffin , the comedian was questioned about his time directing the “Love Story” songstress back in the 2009 music video.

“I became friendly with Brad Paisley and he asked me to direct and be in a video of his called ‘Online,’” Alexander said. “We had to shoot concert footage of him doing that song and me doing that song.”

He continued, “His band was all guys and I said, ‘You have no women here.’ And he said, ‘Well, we have these two girls. Taylor Swift and Kellie Pickler are my opening acts.’ I went, ‘Well, if they’re happy, get them, let them be on it.'”

With only her debut album on the stands at the time, Swift toured alongside Paisley as his opening act from 2007 to 2008. Following the release of her Fearless album at the end of the year, Swift ultimately headlined her first world tour — where Pickler was also an opening act.

“Taylor was like 17 and already a rockstar, I had seen her act. [She and Pickler] came out and so I put her in I think her first video,” Alexander said, before joking, “And her success is all me.”

While”Online” wasn’t Swift’s first music video — songs like “Tim McGraw” and “Teardrops on My Guitar” came before it — the musician has garnered undeniable success since helping out Paisley and Alexander. Aside from her 10-plus albums, 12 Grammys and countless other awards and record-breaking statistics, her ongoing Eras Tour is reportedly estimated to generate nearly $5 billion for local economies throughout the United States.

I guess it’s safe to say that Jason Alexander knew all too well that Swift would be a star!

The View airs on weekdays at 11/10c on ABC.

Taylor Swift was a backup singer for Brad Paisley?

2022 Toronto International Film Festival - In Conversation With... Taylor Swift

We all have to start somewhere. Does anyone remember when  Taylor Swift  was a backup singer/dancer for  Brad Paisley ? Anyone? Well, Brad does - and he reminded Taylor and the world about it yesterday.

December 13 is Taylor's birthday, and as a shoutout on her special day,  Brad posted a Tik Tok  and tagged her in it. The video was of actor  Jason Alexander  (as Paisley) on stage for Brad's hit "Online." Alongside him, singing and dancing, were  Kellie Pickler  and Taylor Swift.

Brad and Taylor go way back, with Taylor opening for Brad on his 2007 "Bonfires and Amplifiers" tour. And while Taylor never was actually a backup singer for Brad, she did play one in the music video. Brad captioned the Tik Tok, ""Happy Birthday Taylor Swift! Thanks for being a background singer in one of my music videos all those years ago!"

Through the Eras: Taylor Swift's full concert history in Detroit

Looking back at 17 years of taylor swift performances, leading to this weekend's back-to-back concerts at ford field..

taylor swift tour with brad paisley

Taylor Swift's first concert at Ford Field was in 2011.

But the superstar singer's first performance at Ford Field was in November 2006, when she played the National Anthem at the Detroit Lions' Thanksgiving day game as a young up-and-coming artist, less than a month shy of her 17th birthday.

The Lions lost that day, but Swift — whose self-titled debut album was released one month earlier — was a winner, and even if it wasn't immediately apparent then, she was on her way to global domination.

As she returns to Ford Field Friday and Saturday for two very sold-out nights on her blockbuster, Earth-shaking Eras Tour, here's a look back at Swift's concerts in Detroit during every era of her career, up to the present.

You're (not) On Your Own, Kid: Everything to know about Taylor Swift's Detroit shows

Aug. 25, 2006: DTE Energy Music Theatre (opening for Phil Vassar)

Swift’s debut performance in Metro Detroit — if you don’t count the time in spring 2006 when, after a meeting with WYCD-FM (99.5) programmer Tim Roberts, she played him an impromptu private concert in his truck in the parking lot of the Northville P.F. Chang’s — was as an opening act for “Just Another Day in Paradise” singer Phil Vassar. Swift was listed fourth on a bill that also included Emerson Drive and Steve Azar, and the performance came two months before the release of her debut album. It was her only time at the current Pine Knob.

Nov. 23, 2006: Ford Field (National Anthem performance)

Swift strapped on an acoustic guitar and belted out “The Star Spangled Banner” for a national TV audience prior to the Lions’ annual Thanksgiving contest, this particular year against the Miami Dolphins. She delivered the song in a country twang and held the final word in the “land of the free” line for a few extra beats, an early display of moxie from the emerging artist. Lions fans were in for a bummer that day — Detroit lost 27-10, on their way to a 3-13 season — but everyone in attendance can take solace in the fact that they saw a budding superstar before their eyes. (Swift is well overdue for a return to the NFL, and she’s a logical choice for next year’s Super Bowl halftime slot.)

July 11, 2007: The Palace of Auburn Hills (opening for Tim McGraw and Faith Hill)

If you name your debut single "Tim McGraw," someone might take notice. So when Tim McGraw and Faith Hill brought their joint Soul2Soul II tour to the Palace on July 11, 2007, Swift was an opening act, one of just seven shows she played on the tour. And yes, she performed "Tim McGraw" as part of her short set.

Oct. 4, 2007: The Palace of Auburn Hills (opening for Brad Paisley)

Brad Paisley brought Rodney Atkins and Swift along for his Bonfires & Amplifiers Tour, in support of his 2007 album “5th Gear.” Swift, was several hits deep into the run on her debut album at this point — the set spawned five Top 10 country singles — and she picked up new fans every time she hit the stage. The train was a-rollin’, and one could say she was finding “A Place In This World.”

Sept. 20, 2008: The Palace of Auburn Hills (opening for Rascal Flatts)

The country hitmakers' Bob That Head tour visited the Palace on Sept. 20 with Swift in tow, just as her star really started exploding. Her debut album had sold 3 million copies, and "Love Story," the first single from Swift's second album "Fearless," was released less than a week earlier. If it wasn't already clear, Swift's days as an opening act were coming to a close.

June 6, 2009: The Palace of Auburn Hills (opening for Keith Urban)

Keith Urban's no slouch, but by the time his Escape Together tour hit the Palace on June 6, Swift was basically a co-headliner. "Fearless," released the previous November, debuted at No. 1 on Billboard's Top 200 albums chart, selling 592,000 copies its first week, and went on to be 2009's best-selling album. She kicked off her 11-song performance with "You Belong With Me," her current single at the time, and by the time she returned to the Palace less than a year later — at long last, on her own — one night wasn't enough for her or her fans.

March 26-27, 2010: The Palace of Auburn Hills

Swift was 20 years old when she headlined two nights at the Pistons’ home (supporting acts were Gloriana and Kellie Pickler), and by this point she was clearly living out her own fairy tale. “Fearless” took top honors at the Grammys two months earlier, winning four trophies, including Album of the Year. At the Palace, Swift’s two-hour, 16-song performance saw her asking the crowd, “is it all right if I come back here and hang out with you for awhile?” as she waded into the crowd to sing “Hey Stephen” from the perch of one of the Palace suites, later moving to a stage positioned on the back of the arena floor for a short acoustic set, which included a rendition of “Tim McGraw.” The crowd, mostly young girls and their parents, responded throughout the night with shrieking cheers, which Swift basked in for minutes at a time, absorbing the audience’s adoration. She was a superstar — nothing could stop her now.

June 11, 2011: Ford Field (Speak Now World Tour)

Swift moved to the big time with this 2011 concert. With openers Needtobreathe, Frankie Ballard and Randy Montana setting the stage, Swift asserted her starpower in this two-hour show backing 2010’s “Speak Now,” which sold 1.047 million units its first week in stores, putting Swift in rare air among modern hitmakers. The evening’s lavish production featured costume changes, set swaps, lighted trees, aerialists, pyrotechnics, dancers and more, with Swift the beaming light at the center of it all. She’s made Ford Field her home in Detroit ever since.

May 14, 2013: Ford Field (The Red Tour)

The color red was everywhere on this stop on Swift’s Red Tour. It was splashed across video screens, in the costumes, on the instruments, on Swift’s microphone, and on her lips; no matter where you looked, red was thoroughly inescapable. This night marked the first stadium concert on Swift’s Red Tour itinerary, and it packed all the flash and sizzle of a modern pop extravaganza, yet the evening’s biggest musical moment was also its quietest, with Swift’s soaring rendition of her piano ballad “All Too Well,” which remains a fan favorite to this day, stealing the spotlight from the night’s more bombastic performances. Opener Ed Sheeran, meanwhile, made his first but not his last appearance at Ford Field, and he returns later this summer for his second headlining performance at the downtown stadium.

May 30, 2015: Ford Field (The 1989 World Tour)

A crowd of 51,000 fans partied with Swift on this stop on her 1989 World Tour, a worthy celebration of pop music, Swift’s birth year (and her album of the same name) and her love for her fans during her two-hour, 10-minute bonanza. Swift strutted around the stage in a series of sparkly outfits — total costume changes: six — and she was the picture of poise for the entire 19-song outing, which focused so tightly on “1989” that no songs from “Speak Now” made the evening’s final cut. This tour was famous for its surprise cameos, and the appearance of Imagine Dragons’ Dan Reynolds for a mid-show run-through of “Radioactive” was baffling more than anything else. But Swift’s connection with her fans made the evening a memorable one, as it wrapped with a bouncy run-through of “Shake It Off.”

Aug. 28, 2018: Ford Field (Reputation Stadium Tour)

Swift’s most confident, assured Detroit concert to date came at this Reputation Stadium Tour stop, with Swift playfully teasing her villain side, even though her good side kept shining through. Most of 2017’s “Reputation” album was performed, and Swift performed “Jump Then Fall” (from “Fearless”) acoustically, for what she said may have been the first time since she wrote it. Yet it was her warm tribute to Aretha Franklin, who died the previous week, that made the biggest impression, and she led the crowd in a one-minute moment of silence for the Queen of Soul. It set a high bar for Swift to clear as she returns to Ford Field this weekend, but with the power of all of her Eras fueling her fire, she’s no doubt up for the challenge.

Tour Opening Act

«Something really crazy started to happen. I was opening up for every single country headliner imaginable. I was opening up for Brad Paisley, George Strait, Kenny Chesney, Tim McGraw. Like, all these people that I'd always wanted to open up shows for. I was a nervous wreck. I rehearsed non-stop, over and over again. And I loved it. Those were some of my favorite times.» Taylor Swift

Table of Contents

Rascal flatts: me and my gang tour (2006-2007).

«Rascal Flatts just had the perfect audience for me. I have so many young girls who are into my music and I was really wondering how it would be translated into a more traditional country audience. And it's just been unbelievable. It's really exciting to see that my music can apply to literally all walks of life.» Taylor Swift

George Strait's Tour (2007)

«It's crazy to think that a year ago, I was sitting in high school and now I'm on tour with George Strait. Playing for so many people a night, that's such an honor. The stage for his shows is really awesome 'cause there's four sides to it. So I get to work like four crowds every night. It's really, really exciting! When you're singing you can hear the echo of the people in the audience singing every single word with you and that was that big dream that I had for myself. It's happening.» Taylor Swift

Tim McGraw and Faith Hill: Soul2Soul II Tour (2007)

«Taylor proved that she has what it takes to be a real artist in country music and why her fans love her so. It was a thrill to have her on the 'Soul2Soul Tour.' She was professional, prepared, gracious, and most of all, gifted. The real deal.» Faith Hill

Brad Paisley: Bonfires & Amplifiers Tour (2008)

«Brad treats his opening acts like they're just on the same level as he is. I mean, he bought us presents and he'll come and talk to us. It's very cool to be on tour with somebody who's that down to earth. It's really a blessing to be on tour with somebody who just doesn't think that they're all that and who will just come to your bus and be like, 'Hey, how do you do today?'» Taylor Swift

Keith Urban: Escape Together World Tour (2009)

«She was a blast on the road. People have asked me, 'Could you sense that she was going to be who she became?' And I was like, 'I think everybody knew that.' You could see it clearly. She was playing way past where she was. She was way into the future. You could tell.» Keith Urban

Punked by Paisley: The 9 Most Ingenious Brad Paisley Tour Pranks

By Stephen L. Betts

Stephen L. Betts

He’s a seriously talented singer, songwriter and guitar player, but when it comes to touring, Brad Paisley brings the funny — and inflicts it on his opening acts by way of some unforgettable pranks. In celebration of this week’s release of his Moonshine in the Trunk album, we’ve unpacked a few of our favorite Paisley pranks that concertgoers — and the entertainer’s unsuspecting targets — have witnessed through the years, leading us to ask: What’s with all the diapers?

Caged Heat: Although Jack Ingram was aware of Paisley’s penchant for pranks, it wasn’t until the last show on 2007’s Bonfires and Amplifiers Tour that he walked right into one, literally. The tour boss and his crew had fashioned a cage out of PVC pipe and Ingram had little choice but to get in and start his opening set. Luckily, they did provide him with a hacksaw and he got out… two songs into his show.

You’re Busted: Also during the Bonfires and Amplifiers Tour, Paisley played up Kellie Pickler’s ample assets with a JumboTron video that turned out to be a real hoot-er. Titled “You Be the Judge,” the clip, parodying an investigate news segment, racked up the laughs with Photoshopped “before” and “after” images of Pickler that Paisley admitted made her go — or grow — from “small boy” to “Dolly Parton.”

Swift Decline: Opening select shows on Paisley’s 2007 tour, Taylor Swift was only one album into her career but already showing signs of impending superstardom. In a hilarious forward-looking parody of those warts-and-all VH1 Behind the Music biographies, Swift’s career was chronicled, including her fall from grace — which, the clip purported, would include money laundering, gambling debts and underground dog fighting. Happily, the video reported, Swift managed to shake it off by becoming a happy homemaker who sings in her spare time while raising children and doing her household chores.

Editor’s picks

The 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, the 50 worst decisions in movie history, every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term.

Hip Replacement: The Band Perry, whose “Hip to My Heart” was the sibling trio’s debut hit single, fell victim to Paisley’s pranking ways via animation during the Virtual Reality Tour in 2012. At a show in Darien Lake, New York, while the Perrys performed that first hit, footage of kiddie cartoon trio the Doodlebops played behind the group while each member of the colorful TV threesome was rechristened as one of the Band Perry members.

Cinderella Men: In 2008, Chuck Wicks (along with Jewel and Julianne Hough), was one of the openers for the Paisley Party tour. But on one tour stop, Paisley turned the show into a princess party for Wicks, who was riding high with the hit single, “Stealing Cinderella.” While Wicks performed the song, two adult men dressed as Cinderella took the stage, following the singer around and hitting him on the head while also attempting to kiss him. Not quite the fairytale ending he’d hoped for.

Loaded Diaper: In spite of its name, the 2010 American Saturday Night Tour proved pranks were possible any day of the week and no one was spared. During one of Justin Moore’s opening sets, the singer —who has taken a lot of ribbing for his smaller stature — found himself face to chest with a hulking man wearing nothing but an oversized, saggy diaper. The occasion was the recent birth of Moore’s then 2-week-old baby girl, Ella Kole. Later, Justin donned the diaper (over his clothes) and strolled onstage during Paisley’s performance of “Alcohol.”

Liar’s Club: Also an opener on that 2010 tour, Miranda Lambert had yet to marry the man of her dreams and it’s a wonder she ever did. While the gun-toting girlfriend of Blake Shelton performed her hit, “White Liar,” the video screens behind her were filled with countless images of her man cozying up to a series of random, unidentified other women. Paisley later revealed, however, that the photos were all taken backstage at Shelton’s meet-and-greets.

Obama to Protester Interrupting: 'Can’t Just Talk and Not Listen'

Gypsy rose blanchard has separated from her husband and moved back home, this moment to arise: the revisionary genius of beyoncé’s 'blackbird', gop lawmaker thinks he exposed busload of 'illegals' ... it was the gonzaga basketball team.

Chicken Run: In 2011, it was Shelton’s turn to fall prey to Paisley’s mischief. The scheming singer replaced the contents of a stick-on air freshener with raw chicken and placed the freshener in the front lounge of Shelton’s bus. The contents began to smell —badly, but not right away. A few days later, however, because the air freshener was the perfect disguise, nobody on Blake’s bus could figure out where the offending odor was coming from.

Say Cheese: The 2011 H2O Frozen Over Tour was awash in the sweet smell of success, but not for opener Darius Rucker during the trek’s stop in Charlotte, North Carolina. Right before the singer took the stage, Brad’s crew smeared his microphone with hunks of aged Limburger cheese. Good thing he had a back-up? Not really, since they cleverly managed to cake that one in the stinky substance as well. Later, a large man in a diaper sprinkled the singer with purple glitter and confetti. (While he was performing Prince’s “Purple Rain,” of course.)

Brad Paisley, Taylor Swift and country’s twang heard around the world

Brad Paisley has seen his London crowds grow. They may not go four-wheeling in Britain, he says, “but I found out they … like hearing about it.”

Country musician Brad Paisley’s first tour of the United Kingdom in 2000 didn’t leave him much to write home to West Virginia about.

Paisley and the other acts on the tour flew commercial airlines and saw their precious band gear stashed into the jet’s regular luggage holds. The hotels were spartan, the venues were small and they were lucky if the promoters would give them a soundcheck before taking the stage.

“I remember thinking, ‘What am I doing?’” Paisley said. “Knowing who I am in America, what am I doing here?”

These days, Paisley is finding a warmer reception overseas. He first noticed the thaw in 2010 when he booked a show in London.

“I was told, ‘You’ll be playing a small venue and it probably won’t sell out,’” Paisley said.

But tickets went so fast a second show was added and sold out. When Paisley returned to London in 2011, he was booked at the O2 arena. “I said, ‘Are you kidding me?’ They sold 10,000 tickets. That’s a good night in America. It feels like the tip of the iceberg.”

For decades country acts rarely toured abroad, with exceptions for superstars such as Johnny Cash. But it’s now one of America’s hottest musical exports.

Love of family and country — core American values — are part of the appeal for a growing number of global fans. No other form of pop music more consistently expresses the virtues of hard work, self-reliance, honesty, equality and, often, a maverick attitude toward the status quo.

One measure of the shift: Of the 100 highest-grossing concert tours of 2011 worldwide, according to the concert-tracking service Pollstar, 11 were country acts. Two years later, 15 broke that threshold, selling more than 300,000 concert tickets outside the U.S. last year.

Some of the credit goes to bands working harder to build audiences through fan sites on social media and the ability to reach audiences directly through YouTube and similar services.

Another factor: Country music these days is a little less country, and a little more pop. Crossover superstars such as Taylor Swift helped make traditional country instruments such as steel guitars and banjos more accessible to foreign audiences.

“It’s a phenomenon that probably started half a dozen years ago when Taylor Swift emerged as a major international artist,” said Bob Shennan, director of music for three BBC Radio stations. “She came to the U.K. being very much a country artist, then came back and came back and grew a real fan base and now has morphed into the biggest pop act on the planet at the moment.”

Younger country acts with a knack for marketing themselves on social media are among the most active, and most successful, in reaching out to world audiences. Swift mastered that skill early on and her template is being emulated and expanded on by a growing number of her young peers, including Kacey Musgraves, the Band Perry, Chris Young and Brantley Gilbert.

“The Internet has been a huge help,” said Scott Borchetta, head of Swift’s label, Big Machine Records. “Whether it was the first time we took the Band Perry over or the first time we took Taylor, there was already an awareness by a small group of super fans. That never would have happened pre-Internet.”

Then there are high-profile country music events such as the new Country to Country (C2C) Festivals that promoter AEG staged with the Nashville-based Country Music Assn. for the last two years in London, adding Dublin to the mix this year.

Over the course of two days in March, the 2014 C2C London shows drew nearly 30,000 fans.

When Garth Brooks announced plans to resume touring after a 13-year hiatus, he could have chosen any city in America to make his splashy re-entry into the music business.

He chose Dublin, Ireland, and promptly sold 400,000 tickets for five concerts — in a nation with a total population of just over 4 million. When Dublin city officials limited him to three nighttime shows, he canceled all of the shows and left politicians accusing each other of denying Irish fans the chance to see the singer that one Belfast newspaper compared to Elvis Presley.

“It’s a fantastic testament to his global importance that he chose Ireland,” said Shennan, noting that country music is often referred to as “Nashville music” in Britain. “I think it also demonstrates the real popularity of country and the currency now of a real positivity around this music.”

Country allows audiences as far away as China to connect with a slice of life distinctly different from their own.

Ong Zihan, a 23-year-old college graduate in Beijing, began listening to country after watching singer Blake Shelton on “The Voice.”

In addition to the music, she’s drawn to the songs’ messages that “come from a specific cultural background — it’s almost exclusively American,” she said.

“Pop music sometimes can be brainwashing,” she continued. “As I grow more mature, I tend to prefer country music, which I can listen to over and over.”

Milly Olykan, senior event producer for AEG Europe and one of the organizers of the C2C Festivals, said the unapologetic expression of Western values is one of the allures of country music. “Part of what fans are buying into [is] a way of life, a piece of America,” she said. “It’s made country music relevant and cool to a younger audience.

“When British fans show up to our event, for instance, many of them are wearing cowboy hats and western shirts,” she added. “These are urban people who love the sounds of Nashville and want to be fully immersed in it.”

Paisley said he was surprised at the overseas embrace of one of his hit songs, “Mud on the Tires.”

“I remember thinking, ‘Obviously they don’t go four-wheeling in England.’ But I found out they like the thought of it, and like hearing about it,” he said. “Somebody once told me, ‘Your big obstacle is gonna be that white cowboy hat on your head.’ Now I hear people say, ‘You have an advantage with that cowboy hat. You look like what they want someone to look like when they hear country music. They don’t want someone who looks like everybody on MTV.’”

Dolly Parton, whose music grew out of her rural upbringing in the Smoky Mountains of Tennessee, played to an estimated 150,000 people on June 29 at the Glastonbury Festival in Britain, where the headliner was Metallica. She sold out most stops on her recent tour of Britain, Ireland, Germany, Norway and Sweden.

Veteran British critic John Robb crystallized a broader sense of the international appeal of country music in his review of Parton’s Glastonbury concert:

“Dolly Parton is like a theme park,” Robb wrote. “A country-tinged singer who sings from the heart and soul of whatever is left of the American dream....With the twang of her y’all accent — the Deep South flavor that was apparently an old-English accent from Norfolk way and brought back home to the heart of the English Deep South....This the voice of dashed dreams and all human emotion is here.

“Dolly is not just another singer. Dolly is America. America is Dolly.”

Brad Paisley's In, Taylor Swift's Out: The Story Behind the Legends Mural Reno

taylor swift tour with brad paisley

For the past four years, the mural outside of Legends Corner at the corner of 5th Avenue and Broadway has been a must-see for the millions of tourists who wander in and out of the honky-tonks up and down Broadway.

Which is just what Nashville muralist Tim Davis wanted. When he unveiled the painting in December of 2016, he was essentially showing the world his vision of how artists from every era are all welcome to sit at the country music table. A close inspection finds Tim McGraw, Loretta Lynn, Blake Shelton, Dierks Bentley, Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash, Keith Urban, Merle Haggard, Reba McEntire, Alan Jackson, George Strait, Dolly Parton, Garth Brooks and Taylor Swift.

But now, Swift has left the mural and Brad Paisley has taken her place.

In a call with CMT, Davis explained the process for the original design, the revision and the actual art of painting.

"This is the first time we've ever made any changes to the mural," Davis told us of the larger-than-life painting on 5th Avenue. "But when I installed the mural, the owners of Legends Corner had the intention from the beginning of having the mural evolve. So I painted Brad Paisley over Taylor Swift, and as soon as I can, weather permitting, I will be adding more people to it when the people at Legends Corner approve it."

Davis also explained why he needs the weather to cooperate. "It has to be at least 45 degrees for me to paint. I use an artist's acrylic with an anti-graffiti coating," he explained. He hopes to have the remainder of the renovations done in January.

Me and My Gang Tour (2006-07) [ ]

After Rascal Flatts fired their previous opening act, Eric Church , for playing too long, Taylor received a phone call on October 17, 2006, saying that she would be hired as Church's replacement. Church joked with Taylor that he should receive a copy of her first gold album in exchange for helping her become famous; Taylor held up her end of the bargain by sending him her gold album with a note that read, "Thanks for playing too long and too loud on the Flatts tour. I sincerely appreciate it." [4] [5]

Taylor also opened at all of the dates for the first leg of George Strait 's 2007 tour that promoted his album It Just Comes Natural , along with country legend Ronnie Milsap . Just like with the Rascal Flatts tour, Taylor was excited about opening for George Strait, saying that “I couldn’t imagine anything more thrilling than to be on a tour with George Strait [...] Just last week, I was at the CMA Awards watching him be inducted into the Hall of Fame, and this week I received word that I would be on the tour with him. This is surreal! I keep pinching myself to make sure this isn’t just a dream.” [9] [10] The announcement came a week after was finished opening for Rascal Flatts.

Taylor's setlist was the same that she performed on Rascal Flatts' Me and My Gang Tour in 2006.

Taylor Swift's reign continues as she ramps up for the next leg of The Eras Tour. The singer-songwriter will kick off the European portion of her world tour in Paris in May, which will continue throughout the summer. From there, she'll return to North America to tour Canada and a few remaining US cities in the fall. If you're hoping to attend, we've compiled all of the details of The Eras Tour, including how to get Taylor Swift tour tickets.

Swift's Eras Tour has taken the world by storm since March 2023. The three-plus-hour tour features hits from each of Swift's album eras, from "Lover" to her recent Grammy Award-winning "Midnights." Each show also features surprise songs and occasional guests, so fans never quite know what they're in for. Swift will release her latest album, "The Tortured Poets Department," in April, but it's unknown if any of those songs will make their way to the tour setlist.

Ticket prices vary by date and location. International resale tickets tend to be a bit cheaper than US resale tickets. It's worth noting that some of the cheapest tickets have restricted views.

Will Taylor Swift add more dates to the Eras Tour?

Taylor Swift already added additional stops to her tour due to popular demand, including her US tour dates this fall. She also added additional dates to some of her European city stops, including bonus performances in France and the United Kingdom, among other locations. It's unknown whether Swift will end up adding even more tour dates, but by the end of the upcoming US leg she will have been touring for almost two years, so fans shouldn't be surprised if she takes a break.

Why Taylor Swift was replaced by Brad Paisley on a famed Nashville mural celebrating country legends

Taylor Swift has been scrubbed from a famous Nashville mural that pays homage to country music legends, replaced by Brad Paisley.

Swift's fans are in a social media uproar about the mural change at Legends Corner , a bar next to the famed Ryman Auditorium in Music City, which is undergoing an overhaul by artist Tim Davis .

Other country music stars who appear in the painting include Keith Urban, Reba McEntire, Dolly Parton, Blake Shelton and Willie Nelson. Paisley can now be seen sitting in the chair where the "Evermore" singer/songwriter had previously been perched.

Swift fans have insisted this is unfair to the artist who was awarded a rare Pinnacle Award at the 2013 CMAs.

"Taylor Swift did not become the first woman to be awarded the Pinnacle Award and contributed so much to country music only to be replaced on a Nashville mural, utter disrespect," wrote Twitter user  @MissAmericHANA

Taylor Swift saves 2020: Surprise album 'Evermore' praised by fans

Twitter user @ahmedsmith13 wrote, "Taylor Swift, an artist who has the most awarded country album in history and 'has achieved both national and international prominence through at levels unique in country music,' is having her spot on the legends corner mural given to Brad Paisley and for what???"

USA TODAY has reached out to representatives for Swift and for Legends Corner.

In an email Sunday to USA TODAY, Davis confirmed he's been working on planned changes to the mural in the past week, including "covering up Taylor and adding Brad Paisley."

"Ultimately, the changes are not up to me, but up to the owners of the Legends Corner bar. ... They have had the intention from the start to change it up once in a while, taking some artists off and adding others," Davis wrote.

The plan is to add three more country stars to the portrait, including one female artist already "sketched out between Dolly Parton and Garth Brooks" – whom Davis will not yet reveal.  He will be adding the others throughout January as weather permits.

As far as Swift's removal, Davis says, "I have heard many complaints here in Nashville about Taylor being on the wall with country legends since she is currently focused mainly on pop. Some inebriated bar hoppers have spit on her image specifically, feeling betrayed by her venture from country. I guess this is to be expected, but by in large, the people of Nashville love her, as do I."

Davis even hopes to paint a mural in downtown Nashville "that would feature her alone, one side dedicated to her country roots and the other to her success crossing over into pop since I think both are significant."

He has set up a GoFundMe  page, which seeks to raise $35,000 for a Swift mural.

"As a music legend in her own right, and having introduced many to the country music genre, she should be featured on a prominent mural in Music City that showcases both her country roots, and her earned status as the queen of pop," the pages explains, seeking to cover "all expenses to making this happen."

Taylor Swift's ‘Eras Tour (Taylor's Version)' Movie Has Solid Debut for Disney+

The phenomenon that is Taylor Swift's Eras Tour has extended to Disney+.

The music superstar's concert movie, The Eras Tour (Taylor's Version) , had a solid opening weekend on the streamer. The movie amassed 4.6 million views (defined as total viewing time divided by run time) worldwide over its first three days, making it the No. 1 music film ever on Disney+.

The view count is notably lower than some other film premieres Disney+ has touted in recent months - The Little Mermaid , for instance, racked up 16 million views last year, while Pixar's Elemental had 26.4 million . Both of those were measured over five days, however, and had significantly shorter running times than the 3 1/2-hour Eras Tour (Taylor's Version) .

The 4.6 million views translates to 16.2 million hours (or 972 million minutes) of viewing time across the globe. Disney+ doesn't break down viewing figures by country or region; based on the global tally, however, The Eras Tour (Taylor's Version) stands a good chance of showing up in Nielsen's streaming rankings when figures for the week of March 11-17 are released.

The theatrical version of The Eras Tour was one of the bigger box office hits of 2023, earning more than $260 million worldwide - which makes it the highest-grossing concert film and documentary of all time, not adjusted for inflation. (Taylor's Version) on Disney+ runs about 40 minutes longer and includes performances of "cardigan" and acoustic versions of "Maroon," "Death by a Thousand Cuts," "You Are in Love" and "I Can See You" that are not in the theatrical cut.
