A map known as the Duke's Plan

Title : A Description of The Towne Of. Manados :Or New Amsterdam : as it was in September 1661 ... Anno :Domini 1664

Date Depicted : 1661

Date Drawn : 1664

Cartographer : Jacques Cortelyou (?)

Fifteen streets or so, depending on how you count them: that was the capital of the Dutch colony of New Netherland. At its southern end, Manhattan Island tapered to a smoothed point, rather like a sock, with the toes sticking out toward the harbor. Once the decision was made to make it the capital, other features of the town fell into place. The position of the fort at the end of the island naturally meant that the town would develop around it, the streets radiating northward from it and from the East River frontage. The presence of a small inlet cutting through the developing grid didn't deter the inhabitants. They decided it was a "gracht"--a canal--and built pretty little bridges over it, as in Holland.

For most of its life, New Amsterdam had fewer than 1,000 residents, but its influence would far outstrip its size. This was the first and most important multicultural base in colonial America. While Boston and, later, Philadelphia, developed along distinctly English lines, New Amsterdam was pluralistic from the beginning. In 1643, when barely 500 people called it home, director Willem Kieft told a visiting Jesuit priest that 18 languages were spoken. In fact, according to some estimates this "Dutch" city was never more than 50 percent Dutch in its population. The other major groups included Germans, English, Africans, Scandinavians, French, and Jewish. From this tiny mix of peoples would come the structure of New York City.

The so-called Castello Plan --a map drawn up in 1660--gives us an excellent picture of what New Amsterdam was like at its height, just four years before the English took over and renamed it New York. Most of the individual houses indicated on the map can be identified with their owners. Other major features--the fort, gardens, windmill, the small pier--are easily recognized.

The remarkable thing about visiting this part of lower Manhattan today is that, because the street pattern has largely been retained, you can actually get a feeling of walking around New Amsterdam. Just keep your eyes on the streets and don't look up at the skyscrapers.

A walking tour of New Amsterdam and lower Manhattan.

Disney on Broadway Tour—Behind the Magic at the New Amsterdam Theatre

new amsterdam tours

This highly exclusive, behind-the-scenes Broadway tour takes you on a guided journey through New York City’s theater district, along with an in-depth, VIP look at Disney’s landmark New Amsterdam Theatre, led by its in-house historian.

We’ve all got items on our bucket list, but “going to Disney” and “seeing a Broadway musical” are found pretty frequently on many of our do-before-we-die dockets. Fortunately, you can nearly knock two items off your list with one trip, since while you can’t be in New York and Florida at once, the extraordinary entertainers at Disney put on countless Broadway productions every year, and tickets are available far in advance. But, if you’ve already had the pleasure of taking in a Disney show (or several) in the Big Apple, it might seem like there’s not much else to see in New York City ’s theatre district. Well, allow us to let you in on a little secret: There’s more —a lot more. Enter: the Disney on Broadway Tour—Behind the Magic at the New Amsterdam Theatre .

new amsterdam tours

But before all of that, an extremely knowledgeable member of Walks’s Broadway Insider team will lead you on an in-depth tour of New York City ’s historic theater district. Get ready to stop at some of the most famous theaters, not just in the Big Apple, but in the world , where legendary performances garner massive audiences and global acclaim. You’ll take a deep dive into the rich history of the area and lap up the lore of pivotal moments in the annals of the stage, such as the famed Ziegfeld Follies, a series of American musical performances which turned Broadway into the bustling theatrical mecca as we know it.

As if that weren’t enough, your personal Broadway Insider—whose team is composed of some of the best actors, crew members, and theater managers in the business—have first-hand experience of how many people it takes to put on a show and what it’s really like behind the curtain. Expect to hear everything from the sheer scale of an average Broadway production to almost unbelievable tales (like how a goat once fell from the roof of one of these very theaters). But more than anything, you’ll gain a deep, exclusive appreciation for just how much effort goes into each and every Broadway performance.

You’ll also get to know the most popular spots where the cast and crew of some of your favorite Broadway musicals like to hang out. Until then, though, take a look below at all of the fun and exciting destinations you’ll check out on your way to the uber-exclusive, VIP tour, Behind the Magic at the New Amsterdam Theatre.

NYC Theater District Destinations

new amsterdam tours

  • Times Square — Ask any old-timer from New York City (or your Broadway Insider team member) what Times Square “used to be like,” and you’ll be regaled with a rags-to-riches story of how Disney was instrumental in changing the fate of Times Square from a notorious red-light district into what it is today.
  • Duffy Square — Named after Francis P. Duffy, a Catholic priest and military chaplain, Duffy Square is situated between 45th and 47th Streets on Manhattan’s West Side. Today, it’s known for the TKTS theater tickets booth, where customers can score Broadway and Off-Broadway tickets at seriously discounted prices.
  • Sardi’s — No trip to the theater district is complete without visiting Sardi’s—a gorgeous restaurant on West 44th Street—to see over 1,000 character portraits of famous Broadway celebrities. (Plus, it’s the very spot where they came up with the idea for the Tony Awards!)
  • Rodgers & Hammerstein Way — At the corner of 44th Street and Eighth Avenue sits Rodgers & Hammerstein Way, named after the well-known songwriting team of Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II. There, you’ll find the St. James Theatre, where the pair made their Broadway debut with a little musical called Oklahoma!
  • Shubert Alley — Built-in 1913 for the Shubert family—who are largely responsible for establishing the Broadway district itself—this unassuming alley was where the family would park their cars, and where actors would gather while waiting to audition for parts.
  • You’ll also get to swing by and admire the beautiful facades of the world-renowned Marriott Marquis Theatre , Majestic Theatre , and American Airlines Theatre . Too many theaters to remember? No worries: By the end of the exclusive Broadway tour, you’ll be able to identify all of NYC’s most historically and musically important theaters with ease. Who knows—maybe you’ll be the one leading the next tour!

36 Hours in Amsterdam

By Nina Siegal Updated Aug. 31, 2023

A view of a European canal at night. On the far side of the water, a row of narrow buildings are illuminated and reflected in the dark water.

Often caricatured as a sex-and-drugs haven, or a kind of continental Las Vegas, Amsterdam was not always an obvious choice for European cultural travel. Its image has undergone a significant transformation in the last decade, with government efforts to shrink its famous red-light district , curb reckless partying and orient visitors to its more honorable attractions. Now it’s a bonafide cultural mecca. In some respects, the city has regrettably lost a bit of its formerly funky edge, and the relentless tide of tourists can make it nearly impossible to book tickets to famous attractions, such as the Anne Frank House or the Van Gogh Museum, or many of the city’s hot restaurants, at the last minute. Still, there are new, off-the-beaten-track treasures to be found, including openings around NDSM, a former shipyard turned artistic hub, as well as glimpses of old Amsterdam where the city’s creative spirit is still brimming.

Recommendations

  • The Canal Belt (the Grachtengordel), a central district comprising four canals that form a horseshoe, is the picturesque heart of historic Amsterdam.
  • The Rijksmuseum , the Dutch national museum, contains many of the country’s treasures, including works of Rembrandt and Vermeer, and a vast collection of Asian art.
  • Boom Chicago , an English-language comedy club on the Rozengracht, offers live improv with up-and-coming comedians in a cabaret-style setting.
  • The Straat Museum , in the NDSM district, displays graffiti art and murals painted on site by internationally renowned street artists.
  • The Van Gogh Museum contains the world’s largest collection of original paintings and drawings by the beloved Dutch post-Impressionist, as well as biographical information about the artist.
  • Paradiso , a former church turned music venue, offers an international line up of pop and rock headliners.
  • Royal Concertgebouw is the city’s premier classical music venue with stellar acoustics.
  • Jewish Cultural Quarter , the hub of prewar Dutch Jewish life, includes several historic sites.
  • Nine Streets (De 9 Straatjes), an area in the trendy Jordaan district, has luxury boutiques and vintage shops, as well as charming bakeries, cafes and restaurants.
  • Lindengracht Markt (also called Lindenmarkt) and Noordermarkt are two adjacent Saturday open-air markets, great for farm-fresh produce, flowers, artisanal breads and street food.
  • The Frozen Fountain sells fantastical design furniture, lighting and decorative housewares from cutting-edge designers such as Teun Zwets and Ligne Roset.
  • Ko , in two neighboring shopfronts, sells chic and fun gifts, as well as shoes and jewelry.
  • Things I Like Things I Love started as a pop-up vintage shop; now it has its own in-house clothing brand and also sells jewelry, homewares and gifts, like mugs with breasts.
  • De Gouden Reael (by Caron) is a French restaurant in a canal house in the quieter Western Islands.
  • Café Loetje , known for its steaks and fries, offers a variety of classically Dutch dishes.
  • NEXT , at the NDSM dock, offers great cocktails and small plates for sharing, including vegan-friendly options.
  • Fluks & Sons , for its sausage-and-ham sandwiches, and Abu Salie , for its vegetarian sabich, are two excellent street-food options at the Lindengracht Markt.
  • Bruno’s is a terrific hole-in-the-wall coffee bar in the Jordaan.
  • The Dylan is a 41-room boutique hotel in a historic mansion in the Canal Belt. It also houses the Michelin-starred Restaurant Vinkeles . Rooms start from about 570 euros, or about $619.
  • The Ambassade Hotel , also centrally located in the Canal Belt, has hosted many famous visiting literary figures and features a special collection of Dutch art from the postwar avant-garde Cobra movement. Rooms start from 230 euros per night.
  • Stayokay Hostel Amsterdam Vondelpark , in the center of the city’s main park , is a budget option near many major attractions. A private room with two beds starts from around 130 euros, while a bed in a shared room starts from about 52 euros.
  • For short-term rentals , consider something in the walkable Jordaan district, cultural Museumplein, or quiet, residential Oud-West.
  • Bicycles are the prime mode of transport for Amsterdammers; it’s been estimated that there is more than one bike per city inhabitant. Everything in the center is no more than a 15-minute ride apart. Be warned that the bike traffic can be quite intense. Always lock your bike to something, and be careful that you don’t walk in the bike lanes. Bike rental shops are abundant, and many hotels rent or provide them, too. Trams, the Metro and ferries are also reliable, clean and safe. Plan any journey with the 9292 app and check in and out with your debit or credit card or mobile phone. The most reliable local taxi service is TCA .

Surprise! A New Amsterdam Spinoff Is Coming — and It's About Max's Daughter Luna

Tentatively titled New Amsterdam: Tomorrow , the spinoff will pick up 30 years after the series finale left off.

new amsterdam tours

New Amsterdam fans have something very exciting to look forward to: A sequel series to the medical drama is in the works! And it's set to follow a character they've already met.

Read on to find out everything that's been revealed about the project so far.

The New Amsterdam sequel will include a time-jump

Max Goodwin and Luna in New Amsterdam

New Amsterdam: Tomorrow , the current title for the in-development series, would take place 30 years after the events of the fifth and final season of New Amsterdam . The show ended in 2023 , placing the sequel some time in the 2050s. Because of the time jump, viewers will be follow the grown-up version of Dr. Max Goodwin’s ( Ryan Eggold ) daughter, Luna Goodwin. Like her father, Luna will assume the role of Medical Director at New Amsterdam hospital.

This being the future, she will face a different set of challenges than her father, and Deadline reports that the new series will explore the ways Artificial Intelligence affects the medical industry. New Amsterdam: Tomorrow is being created by David Shulner, who also created and oversaw the original series.

The sequel was set up in the New Amsterdam series finale

Luna Goodwin on New Amsterdam

If you watched New Amsterdam all the way to the end, you've already met adult Luna, played by Molly Griggs. However as of now, neither Eggold nor Griggs are attached to the project.

From what viewers have seen of the character, Luna is as enthusiastic and passionate as her father. In the series finale, she reflects on Max's lessons in a speech to her staff.

“Over the course of the day I saw how hard he worked to save one life,” she says. “And how hard everybody worked, together. And that’s when I realized that New Amsterdam didn’t take my father away from me. This hospital gave me my father. Showed me who he was, who I could be. And that’s the day I realized I wanted to be just like him. It’s the day I realized I wanted to be a doctor. So I wanted to start by asking all of you the same thing my father asked his staff every hour of every single day: How can I help?”

Luna Goodwin on New Amsterdam

Young Luna was played on New Amsterdam by twins Nora and Opal Clow. She is the daughter of Max and Georgia Goodwin (Lisa O'Hare), who delivered her daughter in the back of an ambulance and only got to hold her for a moment before the vehicle was involved in a collision. Georgia died from her injuries shortly thereafter.

New Amsterdam Sequel Set 30 Years After the Original Series in the Works at NBC

The series came to an end in January 2023 after five seasons

The doors to New Amsterdam Hospital will be reopened!

New Amsterdam showrunner, executive producer, and creator David Schulner is developing a spinoff series based on the beloved NBC show, Deadline reports.

The series — tentatively titled New Amsterdam: Tomorrow — is set to take place 30 years after the original, with Dr. Max Goodwin's ( Ryan Eggold ) daughter, Luna Goodwin, taking over as Medical Director of New Amsterdam Hospital, per the outlet.

It's been nearly 14 months since fans unknowingly saw the layout for the new spinoff being set up in the series finale when Molly Griggs played an adult version of Luna.

In the final moments of the episode, a grown-up Luna speaks in front of hospital staff as the new medical director and opens up about how she was inspired to become a doctor because of her father.

"I wanted to start by asking you the same thing my father asked his staff every hour of every single day: how can I help?" she later added.

Although it is unclear if Griggs or Eggold will appear in the new series, Deadline reports that fans can expect the show to "explore the ways artificial intelligence would help advance the medical industry in the future."

NBC confirmed that New Amsterdam would end after five seasons in March 2022. The news came as a shock for many fans, as the show had received a  three-season renewal  in January 2020. At the time, the series was in the middle of its second season, and NBC estimated that it was averaging almost 10 million viewers.

Peter Kramer/NBC via Getty

Apart from Eggold, the original series featured Janet Montgomery , Jocko Sims , Freema Agyeman , Tyler Labine, and Anupam Kher.

"When I first read the pilot script for  New Amsterdam , I knew we had a winner. We cheered Max's disruption of the status quo and applauded when he asked his patients the simple yet profound question, 'How can I help?'" said Erin Underhill, the President of Universal Television, in a statement after the announcement was made.

"Over the last four seasons, David, Peter and our incredible cast have tackled important and thought-provoking stories that have touched on the human condition, but also made us laugh and imbued hope. We're so proud of this series and are indebted to everyone involved in bringing  New Amsterdam  to life. Bravo," the statement continued.

After its series finale, the show's Instagram posted a message to fans, sharing, "Thank you  #DamFam , we hope we were able to help. ❤️ All 5 seasons of  #NewAmsterdam  are streaming now on  @peacocktv ."

I've taken this tour twice now and have been impressed both times... but I must say, I had an especially positive experience on this most recent trip to Amsterdam. It was my brother's first time in the city, so I wanted to begin with a solid overview. As it turns out, this was the perfect start. Sam was our guide, and he was absolutely phenomenal. The tour was not only informative, but also relevant and engaging. He was deeply passionate about the city and even took time after the tour to give us some recommendations for the remainder of our trip... we seriously lucked out with him! Cannot recommend this tour enough!

Great tour. Really enjoyed experiencing Amsterdam through the eyes of a liberal local who was both knowledgeable and honest. Thanks!

Awesome tour by Sam

I never write reviews but felt this one was worth it. Sam was an awesome guide and opened our eyes to the real Amsterdam. We were told by the guide that we can decide the value of this tour and the guide really delivered and made the tour far better than ones we paid in advance for. Thanks Sam.

I stumbled across the free walking tour online and convinced my friend to do it on our first afternoon in Amsterdam. I am so glad that I did because it was just wonderful. Our guide was Paul and he was so nice and he did an excellent job with the history of Amsterdam and making it exciting and enjoyable for everyone. I highly recommend this company.

I did the free city tour with Raquel, the tour was incredible! Also, Raquel is amazing, passionated and helpfull with everything that we needed to know about the city. Totally recommended!

We had a great tour of Amsterdam with Jacob last week. I was initially skeptical about what a "free" tour would be like but no more. Despite the rain, Jacob kept the tour moving and fascinating with loads of information. Would not hesitate to recommend this tour with Jacob to anyone.

Touring with Sam!

After travelling for quite some time in both Europe and America, I can 100% say that no one had provided me with such a touring experience as Sam! Not only did help us spark a passion for Amsterdam but he also helped turn what could have been another walking tour into a real journey, which was just a delight. I'm definitely looking forward to coming back to Amsterdam and joining another tour guided by him!

Two Holland America Line crew members die in onboard 'steam release' in Bahamas

new amsterdam tours

Two Holland America Line crew members died on the line’s Nieuw Amsterdam ship on Friday.

The deaths occurred following "an accidental steam release in an engineering space" around 9:20 a.m. while the ship was calling at Half Moon Cay in the Bahamas, according to a spokesperson for the line.

The crew members were third engineer Joseph Terrado and wiper Wawan Gusnawan. Terrado was from the Philippines and Gusnawan was from Indonesia.

"All of us at Holland America Line are deeply saddened by this event," the spokesperson said in an emailed statement. "We’ve been in contact with the families of both team members and are offering our support to them and to all of our crew at this difficult time."

Nieuw Amsterdam was sailing a week-long Eastern Caribbean cruise that departed from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, on March 16, according to CruiseMapper . The ship returned to Fort Lauderdale around two hours late on Saturday, and left for its next cruise about three hours late.

The vessel will visit Ocho Rios in Jamaica on Tuesday.

"The Bahamas Maritime Authority and the Dutch Safety Board are currently investigating. Safety is always our top priority, and we are working to understand what, if anything, can be learned from this tragic accident," the spokesperson said, noting that earlier reports that the crew members died in a fire on board were incorrect.

Two investigators from the Dutch Safety Board traveled to the Caribbean as part of the inquiry, the independent administrative body said in an emailed statement. The BMA did not immediately respond to USA TODAY's request for comment.

New Amsterdam spinoff in the works: What’s it about?

Ryan Eggold on New Amsterdam.

The New Amsterdam universe could expand; this time, a familiar face will be at the wheel.

Deadline reports that a sequel series has entered development at NBC, a year after the original series wrapped its five-season run.

At the time of the series finale in January 2023, there were no plans to keep the franchise alive. Still, the episode did introduce a tag for a sequel in the form of an adult Luna (Molly Griggs) taking over her father’s role as Medical Director of New Amsterdam Hospital.

Now, it seems NBC is interested in making New Amsterdam: Tomorrow a reality. The key difference from the original is that it would be set in the future.

Fans watched for years as Max tried to fight a broken system, but in the future, the doctors would have access to artificial intelligence to help advance the medical industry.

Will Luna follow in her father’s footsteps?

After witnessing what her father went through, we’re sure Luna would take much of that into account throughout her post as she ushers the hospital into the next generation.

Griggs was introduced in the series finale of New Amsterdam, and fans were left to ponder her connection to any of the characters until one of the final scenes.

It’s unclear if the actress will return for the offshoot or if the role will be recast, but no talent is attached, not even Eggold.

It’s hard to imagine the show not featuring flashbacks to what happened to young Luna that made her want to follow in her father’s footsteps, so the key to success will probably be flashbacks.

New Amsterdam got a second life on streaming

Low ratings in its final seasons plagued the original New Amsterdam, but it always had a strong digital footprint and recently got a big boost after debuting on Netflix.

It’s no Suits, but the numbers have clearly been strong enough to get producers thinking about the next chapter.

Sadly, the original series was also plagued with controversial storylines during its last seasons, including removing Freema Agyeman’s Helen from the show.

The series had lost many of its fans by the time it ended, but with the streaming effect on the show, perhaps New Amsterdam: Tomorrow could carve out some success.

If it airs on NBC, it will be in good company: Fellow streaming hit Suits is getting a spinoff at the network called Suits: LA.

New Amsterdam is currently available to stream on Netflix and Peacock.

New Amsterdam Sequel Show Is In The Works, So Could We Finally See The Missing Series Finale Footage?

N BC wrapped one of its medical dramas back in early 2023 with the series finale of New Amsterdam , starring Ryan Eggold as Dr. Max Goodwin. The show ended with a two-hour finale event after five seasons, but two hours weren't enough to answer every single question about the characters and their futures. Now, a sequel series is in the works, and the premise leaves me wondering if New Amsterdam fans could get to see the footage that didn't make it into the finale in 2023.

New Amsterdam's Potential Sequel Series

The potential sequel in the works at NBC is tentatively titled New Amsterdam: Tomorrow and would center on Luna Goodwin, according to Deadline , set three decades after the main events of the original series. The premise makes sense with how the original show ended, as the final scene was actually a flash-forward with Luna as a doctor who fully embraces her dad's "How can I help?" approach to medicine and role as New Amsterdam medical director.

If ordered to series, the project would reportedly explore the impact of artificial intelligence on the medical industry. New Amsterdam creator, executive producer, and showrunner David Schulner is developing the project for NBC, with fellow New Amsterdam alum Peter Horton on board as director and executive producer. Molly Griggs of Dr. Death and Prodigal Son played adult Luna in the original show; it's not clear if she'd reprise the role for the sequel.

It remains to be seen if New Amsterdam: Tomorrow will get a series order and a slot later in the 2024 TV schedule , but this is encouraging news for fans of the original who weren't quite ready to say a permanent goodbye to that world. It was clear pretty quickly after the show ended that there was still interest, as the medical drama was quickly trending on Netflix .

The Scene Cut From The Series Finale

I spoke with New Amsterdam executive producers David Schulner and Peter Horton for the finale back in 2023, including how Max ultimately chose to prioritize Luna over a relationship with Wilder or any lingering feelings about Helen. The episode left the door open about whether he and Wilder reunited at some point between his departure for a new job in Geneva and the time jump ahead to adult Luna, and Schulner revealed that the footage answering that question had been shot . He shared:

We actually shot an ending that pointed the arrow more directly at one conclusion or the other, but it's so much better with the audience being able to participate in it.

At the time, David Schulner had no regrets about not filling in that blank canonically and leaving it for fans to decide what they think happened. While a series set 30 years after the original show wouldn't necessarily have an organic way to incorporate old footage – particularly since Ryan Eggold is reportedly not attached to the sequel – it seems fairly likely that the project would at least have to answer the question about what Max decided.

For his part, Peter Horton shared another reason why the open ending was a good fit for the New Amsterdam series finale:

It's also a little subtle message to the network, if you ever want to bring it back. [laughs]

I don't want to say that Peter Horton manifested NBC wanting to bring the world of New Amsterdam back, but a potential sequel going into development more than a year after the original show's finale definitely seems like the stars aligning!

In all seriousness, the wait is on for word on whether NBC moves forward with New Amsterdam: Tomorrow . For now, you can always find New Amsterdam streaming both via Netflix subscription and Peacock Premium subscription .
