Safari boot company thrives on exclusivity and old-fashioned values

The Courteney Boot Company manufactures a variety of safari boots.

The Courteney Boot Company manufactures a variety of safari boots.

While many shoe brands across the globe are using high-end machines to produce thousands of shoes every hour, a company based in the Zimbabwean city of Bulawayo is still turning out only a few handmade pairs each day. And it is thriving.

Gale Rice took over the running of The Courteney Boot Company after the death of her husband, John, in 2012. “We thrive on exclusivity and it takes more than two weeks to make a single pair. In a world of largely mechanised, high-speed mass production, we are part of the slow movement. With decades of experience, our artisans create a product that we fully intend will last for 20 years; with lots of polish and a bit of tender love and care, they frequently do.”

The boots sell for between $140 to $500 and are made from the skins of animals such as buffalo, kudu, impala and hippopotamus. Game skin leathers are more comfortable to wear than bovine leather.

“Our main raw material, obviously, is leather which we source mostly within Zimbabwe, but we import our ostrich skin from South Africa. All our leather is registered with the Department of National Parks and Wildlife Management and our finished products are CITES certified,” she explains.

The Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) is a multilateral treaty meant to protect endangered plants and animals.

Gale adds that Courteney’s shoes help in animal conservation and anti-poaching activities. “We set out to make 30 pairs a day specifically for the African wildlife and safari industry – including anti-poaching, game wardens, wildlife breeders, game conservationists, hunters, trackers – anyone involved with wildlife in Africa. Initially, we identified well-known people in these industries and gave them a pair for free,” she says.

safari shoes zimbabwe

The Courteney Boot Company’s shoes are handmade to order in a small workshop in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe.

The company has a large market in Europe and the United States with exports accounting for more than 75% of earnings. Some of the shoes are sold on the internet; however, Gale reveals online trade has its challenges. “Online footwear is not an easy game, especially if it’s expensive and has to travel a long way to the customer. Shipping charges are substantial. So, if we ship a pair of size 9s to Canada and the customer decides he wants a size 10, it’s not viable to swap.

“Getting the size right in the first place is the goal and we communicate extensively with the client to make that happen. After 30 years, there are plenty of repeat customers who know their size and buy other styles from us, so we tick over nicely and it is growing.”

Gale says the company is constantly on the lookout for stockists across Europe and America.

“We attracted the attention of one of the world’s leading gun makers and our relationship continues to this day. We never stop improving. Every single day, we consider some aspect of the factory: our operations, product, working conditions, equipment, waste and raw materials. No individual, no machine, no component escapes attention.”

The company is currently in the process of adding other leather accessories to its range including bags and belts. “We are expanding into leather bags but these things take time, hard work and preparation. We add a new design only if there is a significant demand for it.”

The boots are made from natural game skins such as ostrich, kudu, buffalo, impala and hippo leather.

According to Gale, keeping her business afloat during Zimbabwe’s decades of economic meltdown was no easy task but she learnt invaluable lessons that she continues to use today. Zimbabwe underwent a severe economic crisis with inflation rising to over a million per cent per annum. The government was eventually forced to discard its currency in favour of the US dollar in 2009.

“Everyone who runs a business knows that any given day is unpredictable and full of challenges; it’s a balance of highs and lows, joys and frustrations, failures and triumphs. Zimbabwe’s economic collapse stands out; the losses incurred by individuals and organisations, the sheer hardship. The Courteney Boot Company relied on an incredibly nimble and dedicated team, huge amounts of understanding, empathy, loyalty, trust and faith to pull through that period.

“We had to overcome almost unconquerable anger that our kleptocratic government had so nonchalantly stolen our futures and brought the entire country to a standstill, without food on the table,” she says.

The new government which toppled the late Robert Mugabe after a coup in 2017 has not done enough to create a conducive environment for business. “Today, the supermarkets can provide but generally our collective and individual situations are worse now than those days of collapse. Theft is a bit more insidious, state control has increased exponentially, and fear has become a feature,” she shares.

Despite these difficulties, Gale says her vision is to continue producing high-quality safari boots. “We will always find ways to stay afloat and provide a living for all our team in this challenging environment.”

Handmade Safari Boots, Shoes and Accessories in Exotic Gameskin Leathers

Courteney footwear and accessories are manufactured in the old fashioned way that’s seldom seen today. Our products are handmade to order by skilled craftsmen and women in a small workshop in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, using the finest gameskin leathers from renewable resources.

The Courteney collection combines natural gameskins such as Ostrich, Kudu, Cape buffalo, Impala and Hippo leather. With wild leather there will be variations in colour and texture, but your hand-crafted Courteney product will age gracefully with time, wear and polish. Gameskin is more comfortable to wear than bovine, and as the leather shapes itself to your ‘footprint’, your boots will become personalised and unique to you.

Unlike mass produced footwear, we use all-natural materials. The upper, lining, insole and sock are all natural leather, allowing your foot to breathe. We even make our own natural rubber soles which are flexible and extremely quiet.

Safari Shoes - The Good, The Bad and the Ugly

Which safari shoes should you take with you on a safari expedition? Don't make the mistake of packing the wrong Africa shoes for your trip.

The tendency seems to be for everyone to take safari boots regardless of the kind of safari they are going on but that is not always the best choice. The nature of your safari trip is the key point to making the correct choice of safari shoes.

What Kind Of Safari Trip Are You Going On?

If you are going on a walking safari there is no question that you need to take safari boots with you, and a good pair at that because you are going to be spending a lot of time on your feet.

So any safari where you will spend time walking in the bush your favourite pair of boots needs to go with.

But there are many safari trips where you will be spending all your time in the bush comfortably seated inside a safari vehicle enjoying the wildlife without setting foot outside.

In that case you need a pair of shoes that are comfortable and wearing safari boots for long periods of time while you are sitting down doesn't make much sense.

I find that sandals are perfect for situations like this. They are very comfortable and cool, allowing your feet to breathe on hot African days and you can slip them on and off quickly especially if you have a pair with Velcro tie-ups.

They are safe to wear back at camp too because they provide enough protection against thorns, stones and the kind of insects you may find there.

It's not recommended to walk around the camp barefoot especially in the dark as you might step on something nasty like a scorpion. So you can slip your sandals on and off quickly and conveniently in camp too.

If you are not comfortable wearing sandals then a normal pair of shoes will also do as long as they are not white. Stay away from white shoes because they will get dirty very quickly from dust and mud if it rains.

By taking sandals and a pair of safari boots or normal African shoes as depends on the type of safari trip you will get the best of both worlds.

Safari Shoes: Quick Guide to Safari Footwear

Safari Shoes: Quick Guide to Safari Footwear

Select safari shoes which are suited to your specific type of safari.

If you are planning a safari, it is important to pack light. Shoes are often heavy, bulky travel items. When it comes to safari shoes, clever packing can save invaluable luggage space and weight. Have you thought about what lurks on the ground around camp? Will your shoes stand up to the terrain on a walking safari? These are our quick tips to getting the best shoes for safari.

Which are the best shoes for safari?

If you are going on a game drive safari, the best shoes to take along are trail shoes. These are usually designed to be lightweight (great for keeping the weight of your duffle to a minimum), comfortable, and breathable for outdoor activities. They also usually provide grip for trail conditions, which is great if your guide suggests a short bush walk. Depending on preference, you could also wear these shoes on a walking safari or other active safari. Shop men's safari shoes and women's safari shoes shoes.

Top tip: Check your shoes for snakes, scorpions, and insects - another reason to wear closed shoes.

What shoes should I pack for a walking safari? Do I need to take hiking boots?

Again, this depends on preference. Your travel conditions will also make a difference to the shoes you take on a walking safari. In many cases, your trail shoes will suffice. If you are looking for ankle protection or if you are worried about insects and reptiles, a boot with a higher rise or a pair of hiking boots is a good idea. If you are walking in muddy forest conditions, sandy terrain, or face river crossings, a medium- to high-rise, waterproof boot with a built-in tongue will keep water and sand out and keep you comfortable.

These boots were made for walking safaris: Our Rufiji™ APU Combat Boots were originally designed for Africa’s anti-poaching units. These boots are proven to be comfortable over many hours of walking across varied terrain, muddy conditions, and river crossings.

Easy-on, easy-off ankle boots: With closed shoes the wise choice for safari-goers, Chelsea boots are a safari camp favourite for slip-on convenience and comfort - and they look great too! The Buffalo Boots are made from genuine leather with a grippy rubber sole - combining grit and good looks for luxury safaris to self drive safaris (and everything in between). From short walks to around-the-safari-lodge style, the Buffalo Boot is an easy choice for every element of camp life.

What shoes should I wear around the lodge?

Slipping your feet into a pair of safari sandals is a very satisfying sensation as the day heats up on safari. A hybrid sandal is a popular choice amongst travellers. Our Rufiji™ Leather Safari Sandals are African-made for African adventures - a shoe women will love on safari and at home.

Are there any safari footwear accessories I should consider?

Blister-free socks Safari shoes are best paired with blister-free socks. A blister can be a real hindrance on safari. Don’t take the risk by investing in a pair of blister-free socks.

Gaiters If you are looking for a bit of added protection from ticks and blackjacks around the ankles, a pair of ankle gaiters will come in handy. If you opt for trail shoes over boots, gaiters will also help to prevent debris going into your shoes. Our gaiters are available in suede leather and canvas.

How to Choose your Safari Shoes

By Author cristina garcia

Posted on Published: December 26, 2017  - Last updated: August 1, 2023

When preparing for an African safari there are so many things to remember. Vaccinations, insurance, flights, clothes… Then at the last minute you remember the shoes! What are the best safari shoes to pack? should I take safari boots instead? Will flip flops do? We’re here to help you answer that question.

My personal recommendation is to not take more than 3 pairs of shoes for safari in total. I used to always take 4 pairs and one would end up never being worn. Shoes are one of the most important items on any trip, but also one of the bulkiest. And if you take the wrong shoes your trip might be ruined. If you are careful about how you choose your safari shoes, you won’t take up unnecessary space in your luggage and you’ll have a great trip.

Here are our recommendations of shoes to take on a safari:

Table of Contents

Safari Shoes for a Walking Safari

Choose an eco friendly flip flop., safari sandals, waterproof safari sandals for your water based safari: okavango delta and beyond, shoes for staying at a lodge.

When you visit Africa to see wildlife, it is very likely that you’ll take a walking safari , even if it’s a short one. And you should! A walking safari will get you closer to the animals, and you will find yourself immersed in their habitat. And you’ll need the best shoes for safari to enjoy it.

choose a good safari shoe if you are going on a walking safari

Getting proper walking safari shoes  is important for several reasons. First of all, if you’re walking in the bush, you need good closed-toe shoes, never flip flops or sandals. I hate to break it to you, but snakes, spiders, and scorpions are never far from your feet. And your toes are delicious. If you are super-paranoid about being bitten by a snake, take  mid or tall hiking boots (safari boots) instead of low hiking shoes so your ankles are also covered. I personally think it’s overkill to wear tall hiking boots and they’re not that comfortable in the hot months. My feet suffer from claustrophobia. For me, low-height hybrid hiking shoe/ trainers are the perfect safari shoes.

safari shoes zimbabwe

I always bring my KEEN hiking shoes . They are an older model of the Targhee II. I just love them. I bought them second hand (they were hardly worn and I was super broke) a few years ago for our week-long hike in Yellowstone and have been using them ever since (that makes them 6 year old!). They are breathable and they dry super quick. This is handy if you are clumsy like me and tend to accidentally step into creeks and rivers. Keen hiking shoes have what they call KeenDry ( a waterproof breathable membrane). Not just a gimmick, it totally works and they are dry within a couple hours. When choosing your walking safari shoes, I always recommend to get shoes that are waterproof and breathable .

For an African safari I also wear  hike ultra light smartwool socks . I know, wool sounds hot, but they wick moisture well and you can wear them for many days and they don’t smell. It’s amazing! Since my hiking shoes are the most bulky shoes that I take on an African safari, they are the ones I wear on the plane. Make sure you choose hiking shoes that also function well for daily wear, and not some that will end up in the bottom of your wardrobe for months.

Here are our favorite walking safari shoes for women, safari shoes for men, and also a couple of safari boots:

Shoes for Camping while on a Safari

If you are like us and prefer to camp while on a safari, you should pack a pair of flip flops to use while showering. Your feet will thank you when using the communal showers.

You can also wear flip flops around camp, but always bear in mind that there might be lots of thorns around. Hal’s flip flops were ruined after just 5 days of camping in Botswana because of it. And some of the thorns are pretty long and thick and can easily puncture through the flip flop and into your feet. Eek! (Photo below.) On a later trip to the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park , Hal got some flip flops with much thicker soles and wore them for 5 weeks straight, no problem! We advise not to wear flip flops at night since there might be snakes or scorpions around and you won’t see them in the dark. Cover your feet at night.

a thorn in my safari shoes, South Africa

Our favorite eco friendly flip flop companies are:

Patagonia : Their Environmental and Social Responsibility   is known worldwide. They  donate 1% of their sales to environmental organizations around the world. For example, through grants and donations, Patagonia supports Buffalo Field Campaign, a non profit that protects Yellowstone’s wild buffalo and their habitat.

Chaco : I own a pair of Chaco flip flops and I love them. I also just found out about their sustainability. Their ReChaco program allows you to send your old Z/sandal for repairs (resoled or restrapped) for free. Almost 300,000 sandals have been repaired so far, keeping a lot of still usable shoes off the landfill. Also, the webbing on their sandals is made of recycled plastic bottles! I own the Chaco’s Chillos flip flop on the color Sadie Sparrow. This ones are great to wear around campgrounds, and they are fine if they get a little wet. For men, I’d try the Chaco Men’s Lowdown Flip Flop . These are lightweight and have a 3.0 MM lug outsole for no slip traction.

Olli : Natural and fair trade flip flops. Made from natural rubber, these flip flops are also good for the people who make them. Olli is a partner of the the Fair Rubber Association in Sri Lanka. Every pair of flip-flops that you buy will provide education, safe working conditions, & improve the life of the very people who made them! Search Olli flip flops now .

While you can wear flip flops as your everyday shoe in hot weather, my preferred choice for safari shoes are good quality sandals with a thick sole and with a bit more foot support. Thick soles are for the thorn issues and support for comfort. You can use them camping, around the lodge, or even on a light hike if you don’t want to take hiking shoes (but always use closed shoes when hiking in the bush, seriously). My favorites are from from companies that build high quality sandals that last a long time like Taos Footwear (my absolute favorite!) or Merrell’s sandals.  A nice pair of safari sandals will be your go-to shoe on a safari so don’t skimp.

Perfect safari shoes

If you are lucky enough to spend some time in the Okavango delta on a mokoro or kayaking or any other water-based activities you need some good water sandals with an ankle strap. Flip flops might get stuck in the mud and you don’t want to lose them underwater. The perfect safari sandals for this would be something like Chacos’s sandals or Teva’s sandals .

If you are splurging and treating yourself to a nice lodge stay, you might want to give your dusty sandals a rest and wear something more fancy for dinner time. A pair of black or brown shoes/sandals go with everything and you can also wear them if you go out into town.

safari shoes zimbabwe

I love Taos Footwear, and I have a few of their sandals. I take my black Taos Trophy sandal to wear around cities and around the lodge at dinner time. It is cute, super comfy, and can take short hikes. I also take a pair of Taos Perfect sandal . Yes, it is called perfect, and I would agree! Super comfy, extra cute, and can also take you on short and easy hikes. Mine is the ‘bruschetta’ color. Since I have the other sandals in black, I wanted something more colorful.

safari shoes zimbabwe

  • You’re most important shoe is an every day comfortable sandal .
  • If you are going to do any nature walking at all (and you really ought to!) then a closed-toed lightweight hiking shoe is a must have . If you can only take two pairs of shoes, wear these on the plane and pack your sandals.
  • If you have a little extra room then throw in some light weight flip flops for around camp. Or go nuts and take a cute pair of dressier shoes for those nights out and dinners at the lodge.
  • And if you’re going to be spending a fair amount of time in and out of the water, bring a good heavy-duty sandal with ankle straps like a Teva or Chaco.

We hope our recommendations have helped you choose the right shoes to wear on safari for your next adventure!

I enjoyed reading your article, but I have some questions. My wife and I are leaving for a stay at Governors Safari camp on the Mara river in two weeks (December 2 2019). We've never been on this type of trip. We've been following the weather forecasts...they've had plenty of rain and it looks like it will rain while we're there. I have no idea how much we'll be walking in the bush, it's a 4x4 deal, I'd rather be able to get by with some sturdy sandals but I'm thinking we might need waterproof leather hiking shoes/boots. Your thoughts?

Hal Brindley

Sunday 24th of November 2019

Hi Jim, Sounds like a great trip! I think some good low waterproof hiking shoes would do the trick. (or mid-height if you want more ankle support or deeper mud/water) They're good for everyday wearing (they basically look like sneakers) Cristina has a pair of Keen shoes that have lasted her forever. Here's an example of a low Keen waterproof hiking shoe that I use for everyday use and is very functional in muddy hiking conditions Keen Men's Oakenridge waterproof shoes (unless you get into water/mud more than a couple inches deep, then I switch over to rubber boots!) I hope that's helpful! Have a great trip! -Hal

Safari Footwear

When we visit big-five national parks or game reserves we always take two types of safari footwear - boots and sandals.

Some people have said you don't need boots when going to these parks - well, we beg to differ! If you intend going on walking safaris then a good pair of hiking boots is a must, but even if you just intend staying in the camps a comfortable pair of boots is advisable.

The one year we were staying at Twee Rivieren camp in the Kgalagadi and while having a braai, Jennifer was about to step off the porch onto the sand and, just before stepping, she asked me to shine the torch - right under her foot was a black Buthidae Scorpion - this is the thick-tailed poisonous scorpion.

There are snakes, scorpions and insects in all the camps as well as outside them!

Acacia Nebrownii - Etosha

The soles of your safari footwear (both boots and sandals) should have thick, non-slip soles and must be comfortable.

Safari Sandals

We bring two types of sandals:

a thick soled 'bush-sandal' for outside use...

safari shoes zimbabwe

This thin-soled sandal will not prevent thorns from penetrating - I have often gone walking outside only to stand on a thorn and suffer the consequences!

Once the thorn has penetrated, if it is small, the end normally breaks off in the sole when you try and extract it and then you keep getting stabbed so try and ensure that you keep these sandals for indoors!

In 2011 I bought a pair of Courteney sandals. (Courteney specialize in safari footwear). They were a size 11 but the straps were too big - they hung loose on my ankles. I then ordered a size 10 and a half to match my Courteney boot size but when they arrived the straps were too short plus they were a size 10.

When I queried why I did not get the size I requested the answer was that they did not have half size templates for the sandals. As to the straps being too long and then too short I still do not have an answer.

The Courteney boots are very good quality, look good and fit nicely but their sandlas do not live up to their good reputation. Our advice is to buy their boots but don't even look at their sandals.

Safari Boots

In the past we have had boots that were very uncomfortable - they were heavy and the uppers were not supple at all.

safari shoes zimbabwe

When purchasing your hiking boot try and look for the following combination of six key characteristics:

• Boot Weight - The lighter your boots, the easier your walking will be but the boot must obviously still maintain the arch support and lateral and longitudinal rigidity.

• Water Resistance - moisture can be one of your biggest enemies especially in the wet season. Keep in mind that moisture causes painful blisters so you must try and keep your feet dry.

• Tongue - the flap in the boot where you insert your foot. The tongue should be ‘fully gusseted’; this means it should be stitched not just along the bottom but along each edge to the upper so that stones, sand and water cannot get into the boot.

• Scree Collar – This collar protects your Achilles tendon and ankle from chafing and should have padding that keeps sand out of your boot. We have found the best scree collars are ones that have a half-moon cutout at the back – this allows your ankle to flex more when walking and prevents chafing...

Safari footwear - Trailbuster boots

• Sole – this should have an aggressive tread to ensure good grip and should have some sort of stiff shank. This is a thin piece of metal in the sole to protect the foot against thorns, rocks, glass or other sharp objects you may stand on, from penetrating to your foot. It can be likened to a tire that has a steel belt.

• Laces – these should be braided nylon cords. Flat laces have less strength and will break more easily. If your ‘hiking boot’ has flat laces it is most probably a fashion boot and not a genuine hiking boot!

Ideally you want a boot that is comfortable and that looks good. Some boots are very ugly!

The Kruger shops do sell safari footwear but it is limited mainly to veld-skoens (bush shoes).

Safari Footwear - Which make is best?

Trailbuster boots

Jennifer is still wearing her pair after 16 years! These boots have seen Etosha, Kruger, Kgalagadi and Pilanesberg on over 100 safaris during these years.

CAT boot - not good quality

I wore my Trailbusters much more than the CAT boots and I would go on mountain hikes with the Trailbusters but the CAT boot was used to just walk around camps. Just goes to show the variance in quality with products of the same price and I would have expected better from Caterpillar!

I would have bought another pair of Trailbusters but I read on a few forums that the new owners of the company do not have the same quality product and the new Trailbuster boots don't last even half as long as the old boots used to.

I have now bought a pair of Courteney boots that are manufactured in Zimbabwe and are said to last ten years or more.

I bought the Safari style and from day-1 they were very comfortable- no 'wearing-in' needed!

photographing at Okaukuejo waterhole in Etosha

Caring for your safari footwear

You obviously need to apply polish every few months or after every safari to preserve the leather.

If you go on bush walks you will most probably cross streams and the insides of your boots may get wet. Please don't use a hair-dryer or put them near the fire to dry them out! This will dry out and stiffen the leather.

You should let your safari footwear dry naturally - we crumple up newspaper and stuff paper balls into each boot and then leave the boots in the sun (only during winter as the summer sun will be too hot).

Check the newspaper every few hours and keep replacing the wet paper with dry. The paper acts like a sponge and draws the moisture out the boots.

If the outside of the boots are muddy just use water and a soft brush to get the mud off.

Source: Zimbabwe: Safari boot company thrives on exclusivity and old-fashioned values

We add a new design only if there is a significant demand for it.”

safari shoes zimbabwe

Safari Shoes, African Travel Foot Wear, Hiking Boots & Sandals

Footwear is very important when planning a trip to the African wilderness. Safaris in Africa are all about nature, the wild, and the jungle, the very things that make the continent such a beautiful place to visit. It is full of mystery and interesting sights and sounds. Most African safari countries like Tanzania, Kenya, South Africa, Namibia, Botswana, Rwanda and Uganda various wild animals to see, bird watching opportunities, chimpanzee and gorilla trekking white water rafting, and so many other activities that could add to the adventure of your trip. But to fully enjoy all that, you need the perfect pair of shoes. They do make a world of difference especially on hiking and gorilla trekking expeditions. After selecting and packing the right clothes, you need to make a careful and informed selection of footwear.

There should be more of rules about what not to bring on an African safari than the guidelines on what to pack especially about the foot wear that is comfortable for the Jungle experience. The most important point here is to travel lightly.

safari boots

Foot wear also needs change with altitude especially with the Rwenzoris and Mt Kilimanjaro and also when wet and rough forest conditions are anticipated. In countries like Uganda, Rwanda and Gabon, the light but robust and waterproof boots are a must. However for the walking trails as well as the treks in dry season in Udzungwas and Mahale, it’s recommended that regular trail shoes can be used with an ankle support.

Safari Foot wear

With visiting the national parks and the game reserves, always two types of safari foot wear- boots and sandals are recommended.

Many people have said that you might not need boots when going to the parks, but we beg that if you are to go on walking safaris, a good pair of hiking boots is a must, and in case you are intending to stay with in the camps, a comfortable pair of boots is always advisable. These boots can protect you from wild insects, snakes, as well as thorns on the ground. Again, the soles of your safari foot wear (for the boots and sandals) should have thick and non-slip soles that are comfortable.

 Safari Sandals

There are two types of sandals that are comfortable for any African Safari, a thick bush soled sandal for using outside and a thin soled sandal for inside using inside. The thin soled sandal will also prevent the thorns from damaging the foot.

Safari Boots

hiking boots

If you are planning to go on hikes, mountain climbing or tracking chimpanzees and gorillas, then you need good sturdy boots to be able to make your way along the trails on rugged the terrain with little difficulty. You might need boots if you are going to do some bird watching as well.

Safari boots that are very comfortable with thick and light soles as well as supple uppers are so good for a safari. When looking for good hiking boots, try to look for the following combination of six key features.

Boot weight:

Water resistance:, the tongue:, scree collar:, safari foot wear- trail buster boots:,  how to care for your safari foot wear.

  • You need to apply polish once in some months or after every safari in order to try and preserve the leather layer.
  • In case you go for bush walks, you will most probably cross streams as well as the insides of your boots will get wet, don’t use a hair dryer or putting them near the fire in order to dry them out. This will rather dry out and stiffen the leather.
  • Always let your safari foot wear dry naturally, it’s also advisable to crumple up newspaper and also put paper balls into each of the boots and later leave the boots in the sun to dry.
  • Also keep the newspaper for few hours and keep changing them with dry papers, this paper also acts as a sponge which draws the moisture out of the boots.
  • In case the outside part of the boots are muddy, just use water and a soft brush to get rid of the mud.

Walking Safari Shoes & Walking Sandals

If you intend to mostly focus on game drives and wildlife viewing, then you need to invest in a pair of comfortable walking shoes. Since you will mostly be seated in a vehicle or walking short distances to catch sight of a few wild animals. You might need walking shoes for nature walks as well, especially along tracks that are quite even. It can get tiring to wear boots all the time, so walking shoes offer a pretty comfortable and practical respite.

The right shoes also depend on the kind of safari you take. Tour operators can give you good advice on what shoes to pack depending on what safari you have booked.

Some parents like to travel with their children, so children on safari are not a rare occurrence. If you are traveling with your children, make sure they are properly outfitted so they can be comfortable and have a good time too. Comfortable and well fitting walking shoes are good for children, boots are usually not necessary since children are usually not allowed on hikes. Children usually spend their time playing around the lodge and going on a few nature walks it is good to keep them comfortable with the right clothes and footwear.

Walking sandals

are usually good for the evening.

The best shoes for your specific safari.

Kenya, Masai Mara, Safari

How Long Is Your Trip?

When it comes to picking the best safari shoes, we need to remember what’s right for one person and their trip isn’t right for everyone.

That’s why I want to kick off this article, by getting you to think about your specific trip and what shoes might best suit your needs.

To start with, you need to think about where, when and how long you’re planning to safari for.

If you’re simply visiting one country in Africa on a short 1 week trip, then you may be able to take a couple of pairs of different shoes because you won’t be limited by weight in the same way as if you’re undertaking a long overland trip through many countries in Africa, likely living out of a backpack you have to carry.

On a short trip therefore, where you’re likely to have a suitcase you can wheel around, taking a few pairs of shoes might not be such a problem.

If you’ve got a heavy backpack to carry, you might limit yourself to just one!

Where and When Are You Going on Safari?

safari shoes zimbabwe

Next, we need to consider where and when you’re going to safari i.e. in which country and at what time of year.

This will drastically affect what the best shoes for your safari are, because you may need something waterproof if travelling in the rainy season, something well insulated if it’s likely to be cold, or something breathable if you’re travelling in the height of summer.

For example, the jungles of East Africa (if you’re heading to see the gorillas ) have very damp, humid conditions then certainly require boots that are waterproof and have good grip.

Compare this is to travelling to Etosha National Park in Namibia in the height of summer, where the dry, desert-like conditions here and searing heat, mean keeping your feet cool will be of greatest importance.

What Type of Safari Are You Taking?

safari shoes zimbabwe

The third thing to think about when considering what the best shoes for your African safari might be is the type of safari you’ll be enjoying.

Full driving safaris, which are common in parks such as the Serengeti in Tanzania or the Masai Mara in Kenya , where dangerous predators mean you can’t exit a vehicle, will necessitate very different footwear to if you’re enjoying a walking safari with rhinos in eSwatini (formerly Swaziland) or Zimbabwe, where physical trekking on uneven ground will mean good, study boots are very important.

Ditto, a luxury safari where vehicles are a bit more comfortable means you may want to take shoes that are lighter than a rough, budget 4wd safari vehicle, where sturdy shoes that prevent your feet from knocks and bumps might be a better idea.

If you’re staying in a lodge, a more relaxed sandal will be more appropriate than if you’re wild camping and need some protection for those toilet trips in the night!

When it comes to the best safari shoes for you therefore, a little time to think about what type of trip you are likely to undertake, where, when and how long for, will certainly help you prepare the best footwear.

And if you’re looking for ideas about the best safari experience, why not check out this great range of options that cover some of the top wildlife attractions and national parks across the continent.

4 Safari-Specific Shoe Suggestions

And to get you thinking a little more, here’s 4 suggestions to help you narrow down your research…

#1 For gorilla trekking in Uganda, these waterproof and sturdy Salomon Quest Gore-Tex boots have excellent grip, tread and high ankle support to cope with the rough jungle conditions underfoot, as well as keep your feet well protected from any nasty creatures!

#2 For safaris in desert countries like Namibia, where it’s very hot and dry and you’re largely staying instead a vehicle due to the risk of predators, then a good supported and sturdy sandal, will probably be best for keeping your feet cool yet comfortable, making these Arizona Birkenstocks ideal for the job.

#3 For walking safaris in hot Southern African countries like Swaziland or Zimbabwe, something inbetween a big clumpy boot and a sandal will be best. I highly suggest a walking shoe if this is something that’s likely to feature on your itinerary, because not only do they have good grip and support with a thick sole, but they also keep your foot well-ventilated and are flexible, low-rise and light for any quick movements you may have to make. These North Face Hedgehog Fastpack GTX are a good option because they are waterproof too – handy if there’s a heavy dew in the morning!

#4 And finally, for safaris in humid countries such as Kenya and Tanzania in East Africa, something light, comfy and airy, but that will protect your feet from knocks and bumps in a 4wd vehicle, will be best. In this case, a trail runner shoe, like these New Balance Fresh Foams would be perfect.

Practical Points to Think About For Your Safari Shoes

Safari shoe colour.

One thing I know a lot of people think about when it comes to the best shoes for their African safari is colour… because I get a lot of questions about this!

And while colour doesn’t matter a huge amount, I always suggest a natural shade like black, grey, brown, navy or dark green are best.

There are a few reasons for this, although none have very much to do with the wildlife, given most safari animals only see in black and white.

Instead, natural colours make for the best safari shoes in my opinion, simply because a) they match with most other clothing colours well, which makes packing a lot easier and b) they show up the dirt less, which makes cleaning them (or not) a lot easier!

I also personally think natural colours look a lot more stylish than say, a bright pink pair, but this is a cosmetic point, rather than anything practical and certainly down to personal choice.

Waterproofing

safari shoes zimbabwe

We’ve touched on this already, but if you’re travelling anywhere in Africa during the rainy season, waterproof safari shoes are a must.

Even outside of rainy season, humid conditions in East Africa make waterproof boots necessary in my opinion.

Equally, heavy morning dews, which are not uncommon in Southern Africa, make a safari shoe made from Gore-Tex a good option here too.

Temperature

Safari shoes that keep your feet cool through good ventilation, will definitely make your safari a more enjoyable experience, especially if you’re travelling in the summer season in Southern Africa, for example, where the temperatures can be scorching between the months of December and February.

However, travelling here in the winter months (June to August) can be very cold and in this case, a warm, well-insulated boot would be best.

As travellers, we always need to consider weight when packing and selecting something lightweight as your safari shoe of choice is a great option.

Not only will this keep luggage weight down, but having a big, clumpy boot on your foot when you’re clambering in and out of safari vehicles, trying to set up camp or going trekking is never fun.

Of course, you have to balance this against protection, but do remember that as light as possible is a good motto to stick to in my book.

And so we get to protection.

A good sole is very important on any safari shoe in order to help support the arch of your foot and protect it from knocks and bumps.

Ankle support can range from a low-rise trainer, runner or walking shoe, to a full height hiking boot, so whatever you choose, just make sure they fit snuggly around the ankle to offer it support.

When it comes to protection, a mid-length hiking boot can be a good option here, balancing the best of both worlds in terms of protection and weight.

Flexibility

safari shoes zimbabwe

Again, it’s about a trade-off when it comes to protection vs flexibility in a safari shoe, but generally, I would lean towards something lighter and more flexible than something heavy and stiffer.

This is the problem with very sturdy leather hiking boots in my opinion, they are just too heavy and too stiff.

A light, mid-length hiking boot, made from breathable Gore-Tex, or a sturdy trail running shoe with good support and a thick sole, would make much better options if you ask me.

But one feature where you shouldn’t compromise, is grip.

This is key in any safari shoe you choose and whether it’s a good sandal, a light runner or a sturdy hiking boot, good grip is a must.

5 Top Safari Shoes Based on Practical Features

#1 For a lovely natural coloured shoe that goes with most things and won’t show up the dirt easily, these Salomon X Ultra 3 GTX walking shoes are perfect.

#2 For waterproofing points, I really do think these Keen Terradora waterproof hiking boots are hard to beat. They are mid-length too, which means good ankle support, but less weight.

#3 When it comes to temperature, if you need something that will keep your feet warm, but that is also breathable, these Saucony Peregrine trail runners are superb and also offer excellent grip and good protection.

#4 If a lightweight safari shoe is crucial to you, then maybe stick to a simple runner or trainer as your footwear of choice. These New Balance 880v9 GTX are waterproof and weigh less than 300 grams! Good protection and durability too.

#5 And in terms of flexibility, it’s hard to look past the Asics Metarun , which have a Gel technology that not only makes them super responsive, but also 55% lighter than your standard pair of runners.

DON’T HEAD OUT ON SAFARI WITHOUT THESE OTHER 5 ESSENTIALS

#1 Binoculars – They don’t’ need to be expensive, but my cheap Eurohike pair were a great investment.

#2 Toilet Paper – Bush toilets don’t generally provide it!

#3 Natural Sunscreen & Sun Hat – Things get hot on safari so do be prepared.

#4 Good Camera & Lens – An absolute must if you’re looking to capture the incredible landscape and wildlife. I love my mirrorless Sony A6000 , which is light, compact and robust – ideal for Africa travel.

#5 Sarong – Whether it’s covering your shoulders from the sun, using as a pillow on long bus journeys or protecting yourself from dust on safari, a sarong is a great multi-purpose travel item for Africa.

Best Women’s Shoes for an African Safari

Zimbabwe, Victoria Falls, Me at the Falls

I’m putting in this section about the best women’s shoes for an African safari quite simply because many women email me with this question, so ladies I’m dedicating this part to you!

We’ve touched on the colour issue above, but to reiterate, I highly suggest keeping it stylish and coordinated with natural colour footwear that is grey or black.

I’d also see if you can extend your shoe allowance to 2 pairs – both a good mid-length hiking boot / decent walking shoe and a pair of excellent, support sandals will come in very handy.

This should allow you to cover most bases in terms of walking / vehicle safaris and chilling at a lodge / camping, as well as across both South and East Africa if you’re on a long trip.

Remember your feet will swell in the heat and you might be using your hiking boot with a thick sock, so factor these elements in too when trying on your safari shoe.

Speaking from my own experience as a female traveller, I wore my Birkenstock sandals during almost all my safaris in Southern Africa because it was so hot.

However, in East Africa, I wore nothing but by brown Doc Martens due to the wet and muddy conditions.

Note these weren’t ideal, but I was on a huge overland trip from Cairo to Cape Town at the time, so these were the type of boots that covered all bases – fashion and practical – for such a diverse adventure.

3 Best Safari Shoes for Women

#1 I know I keep banging on about them, but it’s just so hard to beat a good pair of Arizona Birkenstocks if you’re looking for the perfect safari sandal ladies.

#2 For a good walking shoe, I just think North Face Litewave are a lovely light and stylish option for women.

#3 And for boots, Merell Siren are light, mid-length, waterproof and about as pretty as a hiking boot can get!

3 Best Overall Pairs of Safari Shoes

South Africa, Kruger National Park, Male Elephant

With this information in mind therefore, you can see that it’s actually impossible to nail down just 1 pair of shoes that are the best shoes for an African safari.

It’s a bit like saying, what are the best shoes for your Europe?

Well, it depends on where you’re going, when and what you’ll be doing there.

Same applies to safari shoes, but based on my experiences in Southern, East, Northern and the Horn of Africa, I’ve come up with 3 great pairs that between them cover all eventualities.

Read on to discover what my overall 3 best shoes for an Africa safari are…. and why!

And, don’t forget, if you’re struggling to decide where to safari (it’s confusing I know!) then check out these top safari tour picks for some seriously super inspiration!

#1 Teva Women’s Tirra Sandal

safari shoes zimbabwe

What I like most about these sandals compared to other women’s activewear sandals is their graceful appearance, with thin straps, which are perfect for long, thin feet like mine!

As one of the original activewear sandal brands Teva are experts in their field and these Tirra models are waterproof with a strong, secure strapping configuration that offers multiple adjustments to ensure a perfect fit.

In addition to this, the shoc pad technology offers superb comfort, with a durable footbed giving super support and spider rubbles soles providing some great grip.

Ideal for Southern Africa in particular, the great ventilation of these shoes is just what you want for the dry, hot conditions in this part of the continent in peak safari season.

Light, quick and easy to slip on and off, these sandals will take up little room in your luggage.

Available in a huge range of colours, the comfortable and supporting Teva’s Women Tirra Sandals would be an excellent choice as one of the best shoes for African safari experiences.

#2 Saucony Women’s Grid Excursion TR9 Trail Running Shoe

Good for walking or cycling safaris like Hells Gate National Park in Kenya or Matapos National Park in Zimbabwe , a pair of trail running shoes are the 2 nd pair on my list of the best for shoes for an African safari.

With tons of great brand to choose, I really love this pair of Saucony Women’s Grid Excursion TR9 Trail Running Shoes , which are great for all sorts of outdoor adventure, including safaris!

Light and durable, these top safari shoes won’t take up much room or weight in your bag.

They can also double as city footwear, perfect for the more urban areas of Africa or travel days, especially given their breathable mesh panels and excellent ventilation.

In addition to keeping your foot cool when on safari, the mesh panel’s of the Saucony Women’s Grid Excursion TR9 Trail Running Shoe are also great for keeping dust and dirt out – an excellent feature in the Africa environment!

The smart cushioning system and rubber outsole also ensure excellent grip and traction.

Perfect for safaris across Africa, these Saucony Women’s Grid Excursion TR9 Trail Running Shoes would work during dawn and night safaris, when the cold weather means you’ll need something that completely covers your foot, but isn’t overly bulky or cumbersome.

#3 KEEN Women’s Targhee II Mid WP Hiking Boot

When it comes to safari hiking boots, the Keen’s Women’s Targhee II Mid WP Hiking Boot offers unparalleled comfort and durability with excellent value for money.

Breathable, with a protective toe cap and excellent traction, these are definitely one of the best for shoes for African safari trips, such as gorilla trekking in East Africa where the ground is muddy, wet and unstable.

With an outstanding waterproof rating, the KEEN Women’s Targhee II Mid WP Hiking Boot would actually be the perfect pair of shoes for safaris across East Africa, where it can rain at any time of year and where conditions can quickly become slippery.

In the dense jungle areas of Africa, fire-ants are an additional threat, so having a hiking boot, rather than a lower supporting shoe here, is going to help you combat these pesky insects too.

As hiking boots go, I love the look of the KEEN Women’s Targhee II Mid WP Hiking Boot , which is pretty stylish as well as practical.

The brown, ‘shitake’ colour scheme they offer are almost fashionable!

You can even wear these on travel days without feeling like the total tourist hiker too!

As well as in East Africa, these are also one of the best shoes for African safari adventures if you are travelling in Southern Africa in the winter (when its freezing and you’ll likely need a boot!) as well as further north in the Horn of Africa.

For example, I wore hiking boots a lot in Ethiopia, in particular when trekking in Simien Mountains National Park and in the Danakil Depression.

PIN IT FOR LATER!

Elderly American tourist killed after elephant attacks vehicle in Zambia, reports say

safari shoes zimbabwe

An American tourist was killed after an "aggressive" bull elephant attacked the vehicle on March 30 during a tour in Zambia, according to media reports.

The tourist, identified only as an 80-year-old American woman, was injured when an "aggressive" elephant charged a vehicle carrying six guests and a guide in Kafue National Park in Zambia, according to a statement provided to multiple outlets including NBC News and People . She was part of a group staying at the Lufupa Camp and had gone out for a photography tour.

Zambia is a landlocked country located in southern Africa, bordered by countries including Zimbabwe, Democratic Republic of Congo and Tanzania.

Another woman who was injured was taken to a private hospital in South Africa, conservation and safari company Wilderness told multiple outlets. Four other people also received treatment for minor injuries.

Video shared on social media by ABC News shows the moment the elephant charged, with images showing later that the vehicle had been flipped on its side.

"The six guests were on the game drive when the vehicle was unexpectedly charged by the bull elephant," Keith Vincent, Wilderness' chief executive officer, said in a statement to ABC News. He added that the safari guide's vehicle was "blocked" by the terrain at the time of the attack.

The woman's body will be returned to her family in the U.S., Wilderness said in the statement to media.

USA TODAY has contacted Zambia police and Wilderness for more information.

US tourist killed after bull elephant toppled safari vehicle in Zambia

Four others were wounded in the attack at Kafue national park, in which the animal barreled into the side of a truck

An elderly US tourist was killed and four others hurt when an aggressive bull elephant charged and toppled their safari vehicle during a game drive in Zambia .

The attack at Kafue national park, in which the large pachyderm ran from a wooded area and barreled into the side of the truck, was captured on video and posted to social media by ABC News. It identified the tourist as 79-year-old Gail Mattson of Minnesota.

Keith Vincent, executive director of the safari operator Wilderness, told the network in a statement that the elephant’s charge was unexpected, and the driver had no opportunity to escape.

“Our guides are all extremely well trained and experienced, but sadly in this instance the terrain and vegetation was such that the guide’s route became blocked and he could not move the vehicle out of harm’s way quickly enough,” he said .

“This is a tragic event and we extend our deepest condolences to the family of the guest who died. We are also, naturally, supporting those guests and the guide involved in this distressing incident.”

Wildlife officials and local police say they are investigating Saturday’s incident, which took place in the national park about 220 miles north-west of Zambia’s capital, Lusaka. Covering almost 8,700 square miles, Kafue is the country’s oldest and largest national park, and is popular with tourists for its abundance and variety of birds and animals.

Wilderness said four other guests in the vehicle were treated for minor injuries.

Family members of Mattson, who also had a home in Arizona, told Minnesota’s KSTP News that she was “living life” on the game-watching holiday. Photographs of her in a safari truck clutching a flower, taken on the day of her death, accompanied the network’s report.

John Longabauth, a friend from Arizona, told the outlet he would miss her adventurous spirit. “She had told us that this safari was going to be her last big adventure,” he said. “Because her birthday is in the summer, she was going to be 80, she felt like she would start slowing down.”

Zambia’s neighbor Zimbabwe has expressed recent concern at a growing conflict between humans and elephants from a rising elephant population, especially one that is migrating more as the climate crisis disrupts animals’ access to food, water and cover, in Africa and around the world.

Harrowing video shows elephant charging truck during African safari, killing American tourist

S hocking video captured the moment a 5-ton bull elephant in Zambia charged at a safari vehicle — flipping it over several times and killing an 80-year-old American woman during an expedition.

The unidentified woman was among six tourists with the group Wilderness Zambia who were out on a photography tour Saturday when they came under attack by the crazed beast, the Telegraph reported.

“At around 9:30 a.m. on Saturday morning the six guests were on the game drive when the vehicle was unexpectedly charged by the bull elephant,” Wilderness Zambia CEO Keith Vincent said in a statement.

One international client killed by elephant in Kafue National Park from lufupa Lodge during Safari. Two injured and being evacuated to Lusaka. Full details being awaited from the operator through the Senior Warden Kafue Region. Very unfortunate indeed. pic.twitter.com/4ntbyhec1G

Distressing footage captured by a passenger shows the elephant barreling toward the vehicle as it cruises along a bush-lined road before suddenly stopping when its path was blocked.

The passenger continues to record as the animal lunges at the vehicle and flips it over.

The elderly woman later died of her injuries while another woman remains hospitalized.

The other four guests were treated for minor injuries after the violent attack.

“Our guides are all extremely well-trained and experienced, but sadly in this instance the terrain and vegetation was such that the guide’s route became blocked and he could not move the vehicle out of harm’s way quickly enough,” Vincent said.

Kafue National Park’s management sent a helicopter to the scene to evacuate the victims.

“This is a tragic event and we extend our deepest condolences to the family of the guest who died. We are also, naturally, supporting those guests and the guide involved in this distressing incident,” Vincent added.

The group was reportedly staying at the luxurious Lufupa Camp in the Kafue National Park, the largest game reserve in Africa.

African Parks, which manages the park, also controls 22 other wildlife sanctuaries in Africa.

The tour group was making arrangements to return the woman’s body to the US, the Nigerian Bulletin reported.
