Little Blue

This bus can accommodate up to 14 passengers, and is one of the most universal vehicles in our fleet. Equipped with checkerboard flooring, wired audio, social seating, and LED lighting.

Mama Blue happens to be our newest addition to our fleet! Mainly used for mid size wine tours, brewery tours, and weddings!

The Magic Shuttle Bus provided transportation for my wedding in August. They did a great job! Very prompt, courteous, and went well beyond what was expected to make sure all of our guests had a great (and safe) time. I would recommend them for any event.

Kayaking + Brew = KaBrew.  Take a kayak trip along the Boardman River in Traverse City and stop along the way at some of the best craft breweries in Northern Michigan and you have what is called a KaBrew!  Join us on a KaBrew adventure any day of the week our start times vary if you can’t find a time that works for you call to make an appointment.

Oddly enough, your Kabrew adventure will start on a bike. Pedal to the Right Brain Brewery to enjoy your first pint. Head to the Filling Station for your next round.  After the filling station you will continue on your bike to Hull Park where your kayak awaits. Launch the kayak and float down the Boardman River to The Rare Bird. Jump back in the kayak to paddle downstream for your last drink at the Kayak Bike & Brew Bar!

Repeat through the summer as necessary!!

Cruising through Suttons Bay on a recent vacation, I spotted Hop Lot  and impulsively pulled in, discovering a sweet spot: a brand-new brewery - it opened in April, 2015 - nestled in a quiet wooded area, with a big, bright taproom and cozy beer garden decorated with strings of hops. Don't just drive by it.

And right next to a wondrous view of the Grand Traverse Bay is Jolly Pumpkin , a brewhouse offering its signature sour beers and superb food. (North Peak products are also on tap, as both breweries are owned by Northern United Brewing Co., based in Dexter.) A must-stop if there ever was one.

Kilkenny's Irish Public House

As you might expect, this pub and brewhouse mingles Irish and American beer styles on its tap list. Kilkenny's  is affiliated with the North Peak/Jolly Pumpkin conglomerate, and is located below North Peak's Traverse City brewery.

"that place with the pig beer" - Mangalitsa Pig Porter, brewed with "real smoked pig heads and bones" - Right Brain is one of TC's beer staples , and one of Northern Michigan's recent growth-success stories. In the last few years, the brewery relocated to a historicm, refurbished warehouse spot, started serving waffle sandwiches in the taproom and began distributing bottles and cans throughout Michigan.

Short's Brewing Company

Slotted among the state's five biggest craft breweries in terms of production, Short's is arguably the  craft-beer destination in Northern Michigan. Founded in Bellaire in 2004, the brewery is as renowned for its flagship beers as it is for its experimentation and commitment to keeping beer wonderfully weird. Brew Bus specializes in winery and brewery tours in Traverse City. Our join-in tours offer a unique experience to explore the best of the area. Our flagship join-in tour offers stops at two wineries and one brewery. We will be visiting each stop for 40 – 45 minutes.

We start by picking you up from any area hotel or within 5 miles of downtown Traverse City. (Please make sure you note that when making your booking.) 

Pricing is $82 + tax per person which includes a 20% gratuity for your driver.

The first stop is Chateau Chantal, a beautiful winery nestled in the rolling hills of Northern Michigan’s Old Mission Peninsula, has a rich history rooted in family and farming.

Next we head to Old Mission Distilling, they bring the essence of Old Mission Peninsula directly into every bottle. Nestled in the heart of the picturesque Old Mission Peninsula in Traverse City. 

For the third stop we visit Silver Spruce Brewing. Brewing an array of classic styles and a close attention to detail for clean, they want to bring their crisp brews to Northern Michigan. 

Hungry along the way? Each stop offers something unique from a small snack to full meals. 

Most wineries do not offer tastings anymore; you will be able to indulge in glass pours or half pints. Each location has wonderful people who can offer suggestions to ensure you select something that is just right for you.

Brewery terra firma.

John Niedermaier is the brains behind Brewery Terra Firma , the first “farm-to-mug” brewery in Traverse City. After finding out that he loves cooking, he realized that brewing is very similar and discovered a passion. With more than 25 years of experience with brewing and more than 1,000 original recipes, he has established a Traverse City brewpub just south of Grand Traverse Mall on a 10-acre farm. However, it’s more like an inviting tasting room full of well-balanced brews. You can enjoy snacks and sodas with your samples.

Right Brain Brewery

With a passion for brewing beer and cutting hair, Russell Springsteen combined both with Right Brain Brewery and the hair salon next door in 2007. Located in a large warehouse on East 16th Street, this innovative Traverse City microbrewery has an industrial style and family-friendly atmosphere. It hosts more than 150,000 patrons every year, and there are at least 30 beers on tap all the time. Some of the ales, IPAs, porters, and stouts contain special ingredients, such as asparagus, cherry pie, chocolate, coffee, and even pig parts. While you drink, you can grab a bite of food from a featured local restaurant.

MiddleCoast Brewing Company

Formerly called Monkey Fist Brewing Co., MiddleCoast Brewing Company is a family-owned brewery on East State Street in Traverse City. Taking beer more seriously than themselves, the team makes ales, IPAs, and hard seltzers in a variety of flavors. It offers a range of beer sizes: 12 ounces, 16 ounces, and kegs for restaurants and bars. If you want to support the brewery further, check out the hats, shirts, and hoodies in its shop.

The Workshop Brewing Company

Although Pete Kirkwood originally founded The Workshop Brewing Company in Pennsylvania, the business has become one of the top breweries in Traverse City. Its mission is to preserve the natural environment in Northern Michigan while honoring the traditions of craft brewing and reinforcing the local community.

With a view of Grand Traverse Bay from Garland Street, you can enjoy an array of seasonal brews, including Belgian Tripel, Marzen beer, and Nitro IPA. New brews are available as well, such as Tart Cherry Ale and Session IPA. Also, The Workshop has a delicious menu of empanadas, all of which are made from scratch with fresh, seasonal ingredients.

Rare Bird Brewpub

In downtown Traverse City, Rare Bird Brewpub was created through a partnership between Tina Schuett and Nate Crane. It resides in a restored 1931 brick building and aims to deliver an unrivaled drinking and dining experience. The interior boasts German beer hall seating and a cool lounge.

The brewpub pours a long menu of its own beers and others from the taps. It has a selection of ciders, wines, and spirits too. If you need a snack, a variety of appetizers, salads, and tacos are available. Some of the items can be made gluten-free and vegan.

The Filling Station Microbrewery

Located in a former railroad station just off the TART Trail, The Filling Station Microbrewery is a family-owned brewery and Traverse city restaurant that’s dedicated to serving high-quality craft beers and pizzas. There are always at least 10 beers to order, and they all pair wonderfully with the menu of fresh salads and wood-fired flatbreads, which are handmade. Whether it’s summer or winter, The Filling Station is a great place to meet with family and friends for a meal inside or on the patio with views of Boardman Lake.

North Peak Brewing Company

Since 1997, North Peak Brewing Company has been established in Traverse City. It’s located in a historic building formerly known as the Big Daylight Candy Factory and still has a factory-like atmosphere. When the brewery was first opened, the focus was food and brews of uncommon quality.

The company expanded over the years, and the headquarters moved to Dexter, Michigan, to support demand. However, you still get the quality and great taste that North Peak is known for no matter where you grab a drink. Along with beer, there are full lunch and dinner menus with appetizers, soups, salads, sandwiches, large plates, and desserts.

Silver Spruce Brewing

After meeting in North Carolina in 2013, Silver Spruce Brewing owners Scott and Leah moved back to Michigan, their home state, to start the brewery. Scott has degrees in molecular biology, and Leah has a degree in brewing technology. Together, they join the vibrant beer scene in Traverse City with craft brews that you don’t want to miss. Check out the brewery on East Eighth Street.

One of the newest breweries in Traverse City, Farm Club is more than just a brewery. It’s also a bakery, farm, marketplace, and restaurant that celebrates the community and honest food. The brewery is located near the base of Leelanau Peninsula with Lake Leelanau to the west and Grand Traverse Bay to the east.

Alongside beer, you can order ciders, wines, snacks, small and large plates, and desserts. The marketplace offers daily essentials, including fresh produce, pantry staples, and prepared foods. Additionally, there’s a curated lineup of Northern Michigan-made housewares and ceramics, cookbooks, body care, and kids’ toys.

Earthen Ales

At Earthen Ales , you get to see what happens when a couple of brewers fall in love. Andrew and Jamie Kidwell-Brix quit their day jobs and created the brewery when they began making more beer than they and their friends could drink. They seriously love to brew and make beers that remind them of the places that they’ve lived and visited over the years. You can get snacks, sodas, and more at the Gray Drive brewery in Traverse City.

Mackinaw Brewing Company

As one of the original brewpubs in Traverse City, Mackinaw Brewing Company rests in a 19th-century brick building at the corner of East Front Street and North Cass Street. Since 1997, it has become a local favorite for handcrafted beer and delightful food.

The malty brew is one of the most popular, but the brewery makes Belgian-style wheat ale, fine pale ales, and a seasonal tart cherry-flavored lager too. There’s a full food menu of appetizers, burgers, salads, soups, seafood, sandwiches, and dinner entrees. As a family-friendly establishment, the brewpub even has a children’s menu.

Fresh Coast Beer Works

In 2016, Chuck Green and Aaron Spangler founded UBrew Homebrew Supply intending to operate an on-site microbrewery in Traverse City. The following year, the company obtained the required state license and started brewing under the name UBrew NanoBrewery. The brewery changed to Fresh Coast Beer Works in 2019 and demonstrates the fresh beauty of Northern Michigan in its tasty beer. Jolly Pumpkin Restaurant & Brewery

Since summer 2004, Jolly Pumpkin Artisan Ales has been brewing in Dexter, Michigan, with Ron Jeffries at the helm. However, you don’t have to make the four-hour drive to get a taste of the beers that have made the brewer stand out among the crowd. Instead, just drive up Old Mission Peninsula, where Jolly Pumpkin Restaurant & Brewery rests along Grand Traverse Bay.

The Traverse City brewpub sits behind Bowers Harbor Inn and features its own rustic country-style brews as well as brews from North Peak Brewing Company. The food menu includes a range of appetizers, salads, artisan pizzas, sandwiches, and plates.

While visiting, you'll have your choice between more than 20 beer spots. If you are unsure of where to start, you can also hop on one of the city's many beer tours or follow the TC Ale Trail.

#1 Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore

Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore is one of the few places in the world that visitors can see perched dunes. The lakeshore's towering dunes, which stretch 35 miles long Michigan 's eastern coast, were formed by glaciers. The slopes left behind by the glaciers turned into dunes as a result of Lake Michigan's tide pushing sand up onto the shore overtime. It's this unique phenomenon that garnered the park National Lakeshore status in 1970. 

Today, Sleeping Bear Dunes is enjoyed by more than a million visitors per year, who flock to the park to experience the dunes and enjoy an eyeful of the lakeshore's vibrantly colored waters, forested hiking trails, beaches and bevy of outdoors activities. First-time visitors won't go wrong starting their journey with the Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive, a 7 1/2-mile drive that takes travelers through forested landscapes and along sand dunes to various overlook points. For hiking, you're spoiled with more than 100 miles of trails. For an easy trek, check out the Empire Bluff trail, a 1 1/2-mile round-trip hike that takes visitors directly to the edge of the dunes. The Pyramid Point trail is a more moderate, hilly option, while the 9-mile Alligator Hill trail takes hikers away from the dunes and higher up to provide sweeping views of the lake and the forests that flank it. If you're looking to do more than just hike, know that you can also bike, kayak, canoe and even scuba dive here. During the winter, the park is open to visitors for snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, sledding and more.

Yes, anyone over 21 may consume alcohol while on the bus, however no "open alcohol" may be brought on or off the bus.

We can accommodate from 1 to 32 in one vehicle and over 200 at one time in multiple vehicles. We currently have 18 different vehicles to choose from.

Our private tours start at 4 hours long and you are welcome to extend them by the half or full hour if you need. Private tours also include free pick-up and drop-off. Private tours are great for groups who want to visit specific locations and have a plan, but also for groups who know they want an afternoon together but want us to plan all the locations . We are here to help if you need us!

A Beginner's Introduction to Traverse City's Fab Four Wines

The Traverse Wine Coast—consisting of the Old Mission and Leelanau AVA’s—offers a wide array of classic, European wine varieties and experimental cold-tolerant hybrids. All of them offer the kind of vibrant, fresh, nuanced flavor that I personally enjoy and that makes them so suited for food pairings, cellaring or just kicking back on the patio with friends.

Despite the many awards the region is winning for a myriad of varieties, there are four in particular that thrive in the area and I believe represent some of the best reflections of terroir in this very unique viticultural environment.

But what makes them so sensational? I talked with top local winemakers—at the forefront in each category—to find out why these varieties are well-suited to the area and what it’s like to grow them in Traverse’s sometimes challenging cold-climate environment.

Pinot Gris (also known as Pinot Grigio in Italy) originated in Burgundy and today, is grown with great success in regions like France’s Alsace, Trentino in Italy and the Willamette Valley in Oregon. Traverse winemakers have recognized how suitable regional soils and climate are to the grape and the resulting expression offers the kind of freshness and beautiful aromas that makes good Pinot Gris such a drinkable and likeable white.

Expect green apple, lemon, tropical fruit in the nose and flavors like apricot, citrus and apple, all with a subtle, tingling zest on the tongue. Because of the acidity, the wines can also age, revealing lusher fruit flavors over time. Paired with local cheeses, smoked or grilled fish like local walleye, or sushi, these wines are absolutely delicious and versatile. I find myself reaching for these bottles every time I’m in the area, whether I’m heading for a sail, joining a dinner party or just soaking in a view of West Bay on my dad’s patio.

“Pinot Gris from Leelanau Peninsula is incredibly balanced and provides beautiful fruit expression, minerality from our sandy loam soils, crisp acidity, and a great mouthfeel,” says Kasey Wierzba, Executive Winemaker and General Manager at Shady Lane Cellars in Suttons Bay. “The main challenge…is the looming threat of molds and rot. A tight-clustered variety from the Pinot family like Pinot Gris poses a bit more of a challenge than, let's say Riesling. By removing the first couple basal leaves that surround the fruiting zone we are able to open up the vine canopy to more sunlight and air movement.”

One of the wine world’s most prized white varieties for its complexity, ageability and distinctive expression of place, Riesling originates from the Rheingau in Germany and though still found most commonly in Germany, is grown throughout the world in places like Washington State, France, California and Canada. Recognizing its potential in the Traverse region, winemaker Ed O’Keefe—founder of Chateau Grand Traverse on the Old Mission Peninsula—planted Riesling vineyards in the mid-1970s with the goal of putting the region on the world-class Riesling map. He and others identified Old Mission’s similarities to traditional, Riesling-friendly soil and climate and today, the wine is made in still, sparkling and late-harvest products in dry, semi-dry and sweet styles that are winning awards globally.

Traverse Riesling aromas and flavors are varied but expect elements like honeycomb, grapefruit, ripe pear and apple, with a crisp acidity keeping the rich layers of fruit lively. These wines are excellent with bright, salty cheeses or my favorite, spicy Thai or Indian cuisine. And think about tasting a TC Riesling with some age on it.

“Riesling likes to grow on the edge of things both climatically and literally,” says second-generation owner of Chateau Grand Traverse, Sean O’Keefe—also the winemaker at Old Mission’s Mari Vineyards . “Old Mission Peninsula is at a more southern 45-degree lower latitude (than the German region from which we draw our inspiration), but because we are on the edge of a continental climate, we experience a relatively late budbreak that moves our ripening season into late October/early November ensuring a nice acid. The glacial sandy soils help maintain dry-ish conditions. I find that growing Riesling on sandy glacial soil produces very delicate aromas without the ‘grapeiness.’ “

O’Keefe says that in some vintages, the sandy soil can create a grapefruit astringency on the finish if not managed properly, but that letting the young wines age longer on the fermentation lees rounds it out and offers “umami” depth for balance.

Fruity, flirty and a cousin of Pinot Noir, Gamay Noir is best known as the variety from which France’s Beaujolais wines are made. Though its style varies depending on where it’s grown and who’s making it, its overall lower-alcohol, tart red-fruit and high acidity character have made it increasingly popular among wine drinkers looking for a versatile, easy- and early-drinking red that goes with many foods. Though also made in places like New Zealand, Canada and Switzerland, it has found an excellent home in Traverse’s cool climate environment.

As a food wine, Traverse Gamay is a go-to. Its light tannins and subtle flavor mean it won’t overpower what’s on the plate. That includes seafood like salmon or tuna, both of which I love with Gamay. Also, it’s great with turkey, so earmark that as an alternative to Pinot Noir for your next Thanksgiving feast.

My first eye-opening experience with Traverse Gamay was at Hawthorne Vineyards , whose vineyards are a stone’s throw away from my family’s place on Old Mission. Says Brian Hosmer, winemaker at Hawthorne and also at Old Mission’s Chateau Chantal : “It’s a good wine for the region because it’s generally very easy to deal with in the cellar and doesn’t need much done in elevage [the wine-maturing steps taken from the end of their alcoholic fermentation up until finally bottling the wine] to make it expressive. We tend to do a very short barrel time in older barrels so as to not overwhelm the fruit and put the finer tannins on the mouth at the center of the wine. But the clone of Gamay from [our site] site is peculiar in that it tends to have shorter shoots and have more clusters than it should per the leaf area to allow it to ripen. Typically the vineyard manager Peter Rigan will go through and adjust that down to a couple of clusters per shoot. Otherwise, the fruit will not fully ripen in our shorter season.”

Cabernet Franc

Cabernet Franc, originating in Bordeaux and famed as a blending grape in Bordeaux wines, has been making waves as a single variety wine worldwide for some time (think France’s Loire, Canada’s Niagara Peninsula and Australia). I think it’s one of the best wines made in the Traverse area, offering (when younger) a light-bodied, silky herbs/red berry/roasted pepper character that’s great with almost any food, though I especially like drinking these wines with dishes like grilled Portobello mushrooms, chicken with thyme or lasagna with fresh oregano.

Traverse-area Cabernet Franc is now on the radar of wine critics and drinkers worldwide. Growing red wines in a cooler-climate can be tough, but Cabernet Franc happens to love almost everything TC soil and weather have to offer, making it a best bet for the region’s flagship red.

“Often when people hear about Michigan reds, it's not really in the most positive light, “says Douglas Olson, winemaker for Leelanau’s Boathouse Vineyards . “And there's a little bit of irony there because I think that we're terribly well suited for something like Cabernet Franc. We're fairly rich in the sand department and we've known from many other regions how wonderful sand is for Cabernet Franc. Here in Leelanau, we’re at almost 1,200 feet, on two main ridges with stratification and soil types. We’ve got really great examples of rock and clay and sand and as those plants grow deeper and better and stronger, we'll see different expressions. As parent grapes of so many varieties, Cabernet Franc—being the king and queen—should be able to do well in many different places. I expect Michigan to be one of them.”

But making Cabernet Franc in the Traverse climate can be tricky without specific know-how, Olson says. “There's an extra diligence we owe Cabernet Franc in the vineyard to get across the finish line. And we can't change when the grapes are going to be picked, necessarily. We can't change the snow that fell last year during my harvest. And we can't change the effects of those really cold conditions on the end. We really need to know how to treat Cabernet Franc like Cabernet Franc. And treat it as Cabernet Franc from Michigan. Trying to create a wine that is more reflective of a warmer climate is where people also get into trouble; you’re not playing to the strengths of the region.”
