The right tour operators can make or break a trip. These specialists came out on top in our annual "World’s Best Awards" survey for 2023 thanks to insider knowledge and personalized service.

While we travel to see the sights, what we really take home with us are the experiences. And finding the right tour operator — one that’s able to meld insider knowledge about a destination with the best ways to take it in — can make or break a trip. But when the right combination does come along, it can be pure magic, so it’s no wonder that the last year has seen group travel on the rise .

Every year for our World's Best Awards survey, T+L asks readers to weigh in on travel experiences around the globe — to share their opinions on the top hotels, resorts, cities, islands, cruise ships, spas, airlines, and more. Nearly 165,000 T+L readers completed the 2023 survey, an increase of nearly 25 percent over pre-pandemic voting levels. A total of more than 685,000 votes were cast across over 8,500 unique properties (hotels, cities, cruise lines, etc.).

Tour operators and safari outfitters were specifically rated on the criteria below:

• Staff/guides
• Itineraries/destinations
• Accommodations

For each characteristic, respondents could choose a rating of excellent, above average, average, below average, or poor. The final scores are averages of these responses.

With nine of the companies returning from last year’s list , one major trend that stands out is the focus on a region, like with this year’s No. 1 pick, ATJ, which focuses on luxury travel, ranging from bespoke private to small group itineraries, in Austrasia. Also destination experts are Inside Japan Tours (No. 10), who offer themed trips, from honeymoons to diving, around the island nation, and Vagabond Tours of Ireland (No. 12), which makes its debut on the list, standing out for its B Corporation status, as it guides travelers around the Emerald Isle in their choice of style, either relaxed and culture-focused or active and adventurous. 

Also notable are the operators who go a step beyond, like two returning favorites: Artisans of Leisure (returning as No. 3) has been called “top notch”; one reader said that “no other tour operator comes close in terms of knowing the destinations [and] understanding what we want and executing our trip flawlessly.” Black Tomato (dropping from last year’s No. 4 to a still respectable No. 6) manages to both fulfill curiosity and allay FOMO on its adventures globally.

But more than anything, it’s loyalty that shows what a strong tour operator is made of, and readers often raved about return visits with a particular company. One, for instance, shared that after 25 journeys, Du Vine Cycling + Adventure Co. (No. 2) stands out among them all. “The best cycling trips I’ve been on,” they said. “Great staff, accommodations, and first class all the way.” And that’s the winning combo for a tour company — leaving travelers with that passion for exploring the world through their eyes. Formerly known as Asia Transpacific Journeys, ATJ made the list in 2011, 2017, and 2018, and it now leapfrogs back in triumphantly, notching the No. 1 spot. Offering tours in countries like Australia, Bhutan, Japan, Laos, Mongolia, Morocco, Nepal, Vietnam, and Taiwan, the company specializes in custom itineraries and private group trips. But what travelers rave about is its band of extremely helpful customer service reps who are “responsive and personable.” They added, “I can call and speak with a live person immediately.” Customers tend to be loyal, but so are the agents: “I have used the same agent and she always remembers what we like and any special needs we have.”

Nuove modalità di rimborso INPS ma con Elenosphi mantieni la stessa procedura di sempre!

La principale novità del 2023 è stata la nuova modalità di rimborso da parte dell'INPS: il contributo verrà direttamente riconosciuto ai richiedenti e non più all'agenzia come negli anni passati. Anche per il 2024 dovrebbe rimanere invariata. Questo cambio di modalità ha scoraggiato molti utenti in quanto presupponeva l'anticipo del costo del soggiorno da parte della famiglia del beneficiario, ed è per questo che noi di Elenosphi offriremo pagamenti a scaglioni in base alle date di rimborso , in questo modo tutto funzionerà come negli passati! Confermati invece i soggiorni tematici in Italia per i ragazzi di scuola superiore.

Cos’è e come funziona Estate INPSieme?

Ogni anno l’INPS bandisce borse di studio per soggiorni estivi di vacanza e studio in Italia , della durata di una o due settimane , e all’ estero , della durata di due settimane . È un’opportunità interessante in cui ai momenti ricreativi e sportivi si alternano varie attività culturali, gite e, soprattutto per l’estero, lo studio di una lingua straniera.

Quanto e quanti contributi prevede il bando 2024?

• Il bando “ Estate INPSieme Italia 2024 ” assegna contributi fino a un massimo di €1000 a 12.020 studenti di scuola primaria (elementare) e secondaria di primo grado ( medie )
• Il bando “ Estate INPSieme Estero ” assegna contributi fino a un massimo di €2100 a 24.282 studenti di scuola secondaria di secondo grado ( superiori ).

Chi può partecipare al bando estate INPSieme?

Il bando è rivolto ai figli o equiparati di dipendenti o pensionati della pubblica amministrazione o iscritti al fondo IPOST.  

DATE E SCADENZE

• Entro il 14 MARZO 2024 (ore 12) Trasmissione domande sul portale
• Entro il 05 APRILE 2024 Pubblicazione graduatorie
• Entro il 23 APRILE 2024 Accettazione contributo . Il richiedente deve accedere in procedura e sottoscrivere le dichiarazioni necessarie.
• Entro il 6 MAGGIO 2024 Scorrimento graduatorie
• Entro il 20 MAGGIO 2024 Accettazione contributo  dai richiedenti risultati vincitori in seguito allo scorrimento
• Entro il 20 GIUGNO 2024 INPS dispone il pagamento di un acconto, pari al 50% del contributo.
• Entro il 9 SETTEMBRE 2024 il richiedente dovrà caricare sul portale INPS la documentazione attestante il soggiorno effettuato (Attestato di frequenza e documenti di viaggio)
• Entro il 25 OTTOBRE 2024 INPS erogherà il saldo (restante 50%) del contributo. 

1)  Modalità di erogazione del contributo:  INPS erogherà il contributo direttamente ai vincitori in graduatoria in due tranche . Il primo pagamento verrà effettuato da INPS ai clienti entro il 20 Giugno (20 Giugno per i ripescati), il saldo del restate 50% del contributo verrà corrisposto da INPS ai vincitori ed ai ripescati entro il 25 Ottobre.

2)  I tour operator non dovranno più accreditarsi presso INPS,  ma dovranno rispettare dei requisiti specifici richiesti . Nel momento in cui l’utente sarà chiamato a caricare la propria documentazione INPS, dovrà caricare anche un documento, fornito da noi di Ace Tour Operator, in cui accerta che il tour operator scelto rispetti i requisiti INPS.

Verificare il possesso dei requisiti per la partecipazione al bando Estate INPSieme 2024 (Art. 3 del bando).

• Presentare o aver presentato la Domanda Sostitutiva Unica ( DSU ) per la determinazione e certificazione dell’ ISEE 2024  (Art. 5 del bando)
• Informazioni relative al ciclo di studi dell’A.S. 2022/2023
• Eventuale documentazione sanitaria

Verificare il possesso di almeno uno dei sistemi di autenticazione di seguito elencati necessari per l’accesso nell’area riservata e l’immissione della domanda di partecipazione (Art. 4 del bando):

• Sistema Pubblico di Identità Digitale ( SPID )
• Carta d’Identità Elettronica ( CIE )
• Carta Nazionale dei Servizi ( CNS )

Compila la Domanda

La Domanda dovrà essere presentata sul sito INPS a partire dalle ore 12:00 del 22 febbraio  fino alle ore 12:00 del 14 marzo 2024!

Entro il 05  aprile 2024 verificare l’ammissione con riserva al beneficio, che verrà comunicata su indirizzo di posta elettronica personale da parte dell’Istituto (Art. 7 del bando)

Carica su INPS la Documentazione

Entro il 23 aprile 2024 adempiere alle prescrizioni richieste in procedura (art. 8 del bando):.

• Caricare in procedura datato e completo di firma del richiedente, di timbro del fornitore e di firma del relativo legale rappresentante
• Dichiarare online di aver sottoscritto un contratto con Ace Tour Operator per l’acquisto del pacchetto
• Caricare la Fattura intestata al Richiedente la prestazione, che attesti il pagamento almeno del 50% o del 100% del costo del soggiorno
• Caricare, sotto la voce ALTRO, la dichiarazione sostitutiva dell’atto di notorietà compilata dal legale rappresentante
• Rendere in procedura la dichiarazione di impegno alla restituzione delle somme erogate in caso di mancata partenza (art. 12)
• In caso di giovane disabile con legge 104/92 art.3 comma 3 o invalidità civile al 100%, caricare in procedura sotto la voce ALTRO, il certificato medico che attesti il numero di accompagnatori necessari in relazione alla patologia
• Indicare in procedura il CODICE IBAN del proprio conto corrente postale o bancario, o della carta prepagata abilitata alla ricezione di bonifici, intestato o cointestato al Richiedente la prestazione; non sono validi IBAN di libretti postali
• Completare le operazioni precedenti utilizzando il tasto funzione “INVIO DATI A INPS”, per consentire l’approvazione della pratica da parte dell’ente, portando lo stato in Verifica Documentazione

Il bando di concorso Estate INPSieme Italia è finalizzato ad offrire a giovanissimi dai 7 ai 13-14 anni la possibilità di fruire di soggiorni al mare o in montagna, durante la stagione estiva nei mesi di giugno, luglio e agosto, in hotel e villaggi turistici. Sono vacanze estive alla scoperta del territorio durante le quali i ragazzi svolgono attività di animazione con obiettivi didattici ed educativi e attività ludiche di gruppo. Per i ragazzi delle scuole primarie di primo grado che partecipano al bando Estate INPSieme Italia Orange Viaggi propone destinazioni di eccellenza nel panorama italiano. In tutti i resort i ragazzi sono immersi nella natura e guidati dai nostri educatori in un percorso esperienziale dove divertimento, avventura, sport e natura si intrecciano per regalare stupende emozioni.

Per la prossima stagione abbiamo inserito nei pacchetti molte altre perle che il nostro paese custodisce, per dare un valore aggiunto al soggiorno e alimentare nei ragazzi curiosità e conoscenza. Le icone riportare nelle schede soggiorno vi indicheranno quali e quante perle italiane i ragazzi potranno ammirare come oasi del WWF, aree archeologiche, aree marine protette, spiagge Bandiera Blu e siti Unesco, per fare di questa esperienza non solo una vacanza ma anche un arricchimento a 360 gradi regalando consapevolezza e coinvolgendo attraverso l’esperienza diretta. Inoltre per la prossima stagione abbiamo aggiunto nuovi temi come il corso di canto e il corso di Spagnolo a Montesilvano, un richiestissimo tema calcio in Piemonte e un ricercato tema sport con il corso di windsurf in Campania. Rewilding Europe is a not-for-profit foundation working to rewild 15 areas across Europe in league with other charities and projects. This company is unashamedly all about boozy breaks. But these aren’t lads-on-tour benders; rather, they are refined small-group cultural tours that aim to get under the skin of a destination through its chief tipple. The range goes beyond the average wine-tasting holiday, with breaks exploring mezcal in Mexico , whiskey in Ireland and vodka in Sweden , as well as wine tours of Champagne, Burgundy and California . Launched by the former bosses of Cookson Adventures, a bespoke travel agency for the super-rich and the Aman hotel group, The Luminaire was never going to be about bucket-and-spade breaks. The operator says it wants to “reinvent educational travel” to make it appeal to all generations. Among its first trips was a voyage to Antarctica with the explorer Sir Ranulph Fiennes, and tours include adventures in Mustique, Japan and the French Riviera led by esteemed naturalists, artists, historians and archaeologists.

This sustainable company specialises in rural destinations in Sweden, Iceland , Scotland and Italy, and aims to give something back to the communities it visits. All bookings include a donation to local schemes. Most trips are group tours and itineraries include visiting magical Finnish Lapland .

To put together a client’s trip, it uses an in-depth questionnaire that goes beyond just budget and location to curate a detailed itinerary along with 24-hour support. Trips to Africa, Australasia, Asia, Europe, Central and South America, the Middle East and Antarctica are on offer.

Intergalactic tourism is finally on the horizon now that all three billionaire space cowboys — Richard Branson, Jeff Bezos and Elon Musk — have successfully launched their commercial rockets, but it will be a while yet before paying customers can join them. Until then there’s Orbite, a French company offering luxurious why-pay-less astronaut-training courses for high rollers to get a taste of space on zero-gravity flights, followed by lobster meals and 1969 Mumm champagne-fuelled evenings. Locations include France and Florida, with a new Philippe Starck-designed academy complex in an undisclosed location set to open in 2024.

7 travel and tourism trends in 2023 for tour and activity operators

2022 has been an important year for the travel industry. We have seen the global restrictions easing which led to the travel and tourism industry starting to recover. Countries around the globe have started welcoming tourists back and maximising the long awaited return of tourism in their areas. 

Surviving the pandemic left travellers very keen to get their culture fixes and start planning their next trip and experience - even if that means spending more. No surprise that in 2022 travel has reached 81% of pre-pandemic levels in the US and it’s on the way to full recovery, reaching 96% in 2023. 

As expected, many aspects of the travel landscape have changed over the past few years, with new trends and ways of travel emerging. People’s perceptions and travel habits have also seen a shift. Despite the uncertain and rather complex economic and geopolitical climate around the world, the need to travel is still present for 72% of travellers.

If 2022 was the year of the triumphant return of travel, 2023 will be the year of its creative reinvention according to Booking.com. As people find themselves struggling to reconcile what is important to them with their desire to travel, revealing that their needs are changing dramatically. 

Let’s look at the most emerging travel trends and predictions for 2023 that aim to help tour and activity operators plan better for their travellers' ever so changing needs.  

1. Cultural experiences are on the rise

Great news for tour and activity operators! In 2023 we will be seeing more and more travellers wanting to experience new cultures and experiences on their travels. The world is ready to dive into other cultures and new experiences head first. 

Half (50%) of global travellers want to experience complete culture shock in 2023 – whether it’s travelling somewhere with completely different cultural experiences and languages (51%) or exploring lesser-known cities with hidden gems that aren’t already on the radar (30%) .

Stepping out the comfort zone is something nearly three-quarters of U.S travellers would rather invest in. From water experiences, to cruising or sailing, an increasing number of adrenaline junkies are less likely to spend on an all-inclusive resort. 

According to a Viator study , water tours experiences have seen +122% growth between 2019 & 2022 - we expect to see this number increase in 2023. Forget the usual favourites, in 2023 travellers will be seeking unique vacations that shock, surprise and delight.

2. Off-grid travel

In Booking.com’s annual Travel Predictions Report we learnt that 44% of the global travellers were looking for an off-grid stay or experience in 2023. These sort of trips are promoted as a sustainable way to avoid crowds and rekindle with nature, keeping a rather low-profile. 

According to Expedia , 21% of travellers are most excited to try new experiences, like: skinny-dipping (11%), sleeping under the stars (19%), solo travelling (17%) or even having a vacation romance (10%). 

It’s no surprise that off-grid experiences are one of the top trends for 2023. Many travellers are ready to disconnect from the constant distraction of their devices and get back to what matters most: nature and actual real human connections. 

Nearly 60% of travellers surveyed are looking for vacations that allow them to escape reality and totally unplug. A similar number responded that they are even interested in learning survival skills on their off-grid vacation, like building a fire or foraging for food.

Camping will continue to grow in popularity, along with guided eco-tours and luxury “glamping” experiences.

3. Nostalgic travels and experiences

Amid global instability and the desire for escapism, people intend to carve out travel experiences that transport them back to simpler times. 88% of travellers are interested in experiences that provide the thrill of reliving the glory of the old days. 

There is a desire among the younger generations to disappear into the romance of a pre-digital age, with 23% of travellers chasing experiences that evoke emotional memories of a bygone era. Whether it’s visiting sites or attractions featured in iconic retro films or era-themed accommodation, nostalgic travels are becoming increasingly popular again.

Theme parks are also on the rise with 61% of travellers seeking activities such as escape rooms, scavenger hunts and building fortresses with giant building blocks.

4. Flexibility is key in 2023

While none of us want want to be affected by it, covid is still in the back of our minds when booking trips or activities. Will you be able to cancel your holiday in case of sickness or in case any problems arise?

During the pandemic, a large part of our travellers chose to virtually see the world from their own living rooms! Even now, more than 40% of the world's travellers say they will turn to virtual reality next year to choose their holidays. 

35% of travellers are keen to embark on a multi-day VR travel experience. This will enable the Metaverse to be more than a ‘try before you buy’. It will have the power to educate, entertain and inspire people, opening the door to infinite adventures.

 While the Metaverse will offer a new way to experience travel in the year ahead, it still won’t stop people from booking a ticket to their next destination, as three in five believe that a virtual experience is not fulfilling enough to check it off the bucket list.

5. Budget friendly trips and experiences

Considering the economic disruption caused by COVID, travellers will continue to prioritise travel in 2023, but they will be more mindful of how they can get the most of their travel budget and what exactly is a priority as part of their travel itinerary. 

While 50% of travellers say that investing in a holiday remains a top priority for them, 68% continue to prioritise travel while seeking to get more value for money. In 2023, travellers will plan their budgets more tightly by taking advantage of offers, tips and timely travel. 63% will be focusing on value for money through discounts and loyalty schemes.

From hotels, destinations, activities to restaurants roughly 52% of travellers decided to visit a specific destination or book a particular activity after seeing an image or video from friends, family, or peers on social media.

In 2023 we think operators should get super serious about social sharing. Any content from 2022 that you have collected, such as customer reviews or photos – put them to use in your future campaigns.

7. The customer experience is more important than ever

Tourism has been hard-hit by the global pandemic in the last couple years. Today, industry players are gradually recovering and looking for ways to return to prosperity and growth. Some are doing better than others, particularly those who focused on customer experience. 

Flight delays and trip cancellations have changed the way travellers are booking with brands. They’re being a lot more careful about what they invest in when it comes to travelling and despite inflation, research found that 63% of people say they’re willing to pay more to get better customer service. 

If you’re looking to increase brand loyalty and more importantly bookings, you need to deliver experiences that delight your customers. If you fail to live up to their expectations, it can prove costly — 76% of consumers will stop booking with you after just one bad experience.
