How to Build a Treasure Commander Deck In MTG

The real treasure was the friends you made along the way. No, wait, it's just treasure.

By Drew Knapp | @FenrirRex | Published 10/28/2023 | 6 min read

Treasures exploded onto the Magic scene in recent sets (much like the explosive mana they can produce) and they've had a truly impressive impact on the game. Giving decks access to quick and dirty mana that also synergize with artifact and sacrificial synergies, it turns out, is very good.

In recent sets,  we've already acquired a critical mass of shiny goodies that make or otherwise work well with treasure tokens, including a healthy stack of legendary creatures that can lead your deck in Commander. While already spoiling who I recommend you should run for your treasure deck, the best place to start is with the Adventures in the Forgotten Realms Rakdos preconstructed deck: Planar Portal.

mtg commander treasure cruise format

The Most Treasured Commanders

mtg commander treasure cruise format

Treasures are still a relatively recent phenomenon, but they've arguably had the biggest impact on the Commander format out of all the mechanics we've seen printed in the last few years. Similarly, we've seen plenty of legends that love to see treasures come and go. I've picked out the top five for your consideration below:

  • Prosper, Tome-Bound
  • Korvold, Fae-Cursed King
  • Jan Jansen, Chaos Crafter
  • Galazeth Prismari
  • Jolene, the Plunder Queen

Propser, Tome-Bound is the clear winner, producing treasures when casting anything from exile and then using the mana from treasures to cast more things from exile and getting some scary value. Korvold, Fae-Cursed King draws you a card whenever you sacrifice treasure, or you use the treasures to feed him— either way he fuels your gameplan easily.

Jan Jansen, Chaos Crafter lets you alternate between sacrificing artifact creatures and treasures, getting the best ouf of sacrificial synergies and adding white for Smothering Tithe . Galazeth Prismari gets the nod into the list largely due to providing an even more unique form of ramp for spellslinger lists.

Finally, Jolene, the Plunder Queen lets you transform treasure into pure beats. She's simple, but effective. It's also worth noting that Ziatora, the Incinerator is very solid, but if you want to run treasures in Ziatora's colors you should probably just stick with Korvold. Similarly, I enjoy Breeches, Brazen Plunderer x Malcolm, Keen-Eyed Navigator but the pirate creature type isn't quite strong enough to let it make the top five.

Glittering Rakdos Core

mtg commander treasure cruise format

There are few things more satisfiying than cracking a pile of treasures to get all the mana you need, and stacking as many effects as possible when you do so just adds to that satisfaction. Mayhem Devil tops the list for the best effect to get when sacking those treasures, often taking out a number of creatures and potentially going for face damage. Pure chaotic fun.

mtg commander treasure cruise format

The devil hitting creatures as well as players is huge, but Mirkwood Bats hits your opponents when your treasures enter and when they leave. With the rate of treasure production in many decks, this can get lethal with a quickness. As an added bonus, it's often not hard to send the flyer over for extra damage on top.

mtg commander treasure cruise format

So, I heard you like treasure. What if you could make more treasure whenever you made treasure? If that sounds good, then Xorn is your man… er, Elemental. Any kind of doubling effect is worth looking at, and the fact that this is doubling a mana source means you should be paying even more attention.

mtg commander treasure cruise format

Double treasures is good, but what if you wanted to turn your treasures into potential lifegain or even card advantage? Academy Manufactor takes treasures and makes them do a little bit of everything by adding Clue and Food tokens into the mix. All we're missing is something that makes Blood alongside treasure tokens and we'd have everything.

mtg commander treasure cruise format

With all the value these core cards generate, we're already not exactly struggling to find a win. Still, if something is worth doing, it's surely worth overdoing! Revel in Riches gets you lots of treasure during a game, and a timely board wipe can almost immediately translate into a win while Revel is on the board. Gotta love having the words "win the game" attached to an effect you want to be running anyway!

Extortionists and Strongarms

mtg commander treasure cruise format

Generating lots of treasures and then taking advantage of them is the game plan, so I've got an additional bundle of creatures that basically always make their way into treasure-centric lists. Dockside Extortionist is the king of treasures, while Professional Face-Breaker lets you get card advantage off your treasures, and Grim Hireling cashes them in for removal.

Sacrifice to Capitalism

mtg commander treasure cruise format

Getting all the mana you need is one thing, but the best thing you can be doing with your treasure is gunning down the table with them. Disciple of the Vault pings down players, and Nadier's Nightblade does the thing while padding your life total on top. Marionette Master can potentially chunk the table for four (or more!) life with every treasure sacrificed, which (as you might imagine) can add up incredibly fast.

Weaponize Your Hoard

mtg commander treasure cruise format

While the black sacrifice drain effects will often get you there, Reckless Fireweaver and Ingenious Artillerist work as solid Impact Tremors variants for your treasure tokens. Kalain, Reclusive Painter also lets you weaponize your treasures when they're used to cast creatures, sometimes resulting in some very juiced up beaters.

Build Your Fortune

mtg commander treasure cruise format

Looping back around, we can do a lot of damage with our treasures but we want some more ways to generate them. Deadly Dispute is simple and effective, drawing you into more fuel while keeping the treasure flowing. Pitiless Plunderer lets you loot the dead, while Cavern-Hard Dragon punishes greedy opponents beautifully while rewarding you.

Plundered Conquest

mtg commander treasure cruise format

You can ping your opponents down or win outright with Revel in Riches , but there are still more ways to win with treasures! Madda, Brazen Outlaw can dig up some amazing dragons, including Hellkite Tyrant who may just win you the game on the spot. Meanwhile, Lich-Knight's Conquest can transform a stacked treasury into a lethal board.

Mines, Vaults, and More

mtg commander treasure cruise format

There are several lands that support artifacts or help you recur creatures, both of which are relevant to treasure-centric strategies, but there are a few more direct synergies. Mines of Moria and Treasure Vault both help add to your treasury, while Inventors' Fair sees your little stack of gold and lets you tutor for the best artifact in your list.

High Value Play

We have plenty of ways to cash in value with the deck, but that doesn't necessarily tell us how it plays— let's take a walk through the treasury. Your first few turns are spent ramping up or starting some engines. Sol Ring and Arcane Signet can lead the way towards later plays while you begin whittling down the table with an early Reckless Fireweaver or similar.

The midgame is likely where your commander drops in to start adding to your hoard, all while you can start really turning up the heat on the opposition with cards like Mirkwood Bats or Pitiless Plunderer . In a perfect scenario, you're able to get enough of these engines going, fueled by your treasures, to be threatening to bury the rest of the table in gold long before they can do anything about it.

However, the world is rarely perfect, so we must also consider the end game. You can still drain the table out with our biggest sacrificial treasure lover, Marionette Master , but also may be able to sneak in an "I Win" button off of Reven in Riches or Hellkite Tyrant . If not, you also have table-wide damage off of newcomer Flaming Tyrannosaurus and Exsanguinate . You're basically never out of the game with this deck as long as you're alive!

A Prosperous Deck

mtg commander treasure cruise format

While we have plenty of options, the core of a treasure deck should absolutely be Rakdos, and Prosper, Tome-Bound is number one in my recommendations for a reason. If you want to combine some of the most powerful, exile-based card advantage engines with the impressive resources that a stacked treasury gives you, you'll find nothing better than this starting point:
