Symphony of the Seas Lifestyles Cruise ® Caribbean Takeover Cruise

November 10-17, 2024.

Oasis of the Seas Boarkwalk

Change how you stay, play and unwind during our Bliss Cruise on the Symphony of the Seas. Each day and night brings something new to do, see and explore one of the seven distinct "neighborhoods" throughout the ship. The themed neighborhoods include Central Park, Boardwalk, the Royal Promenade, the Pool and Sports Zone, Vitality at Sea Spa and Fitness Center, Entertainment Place and Youth Zone (this will be a ghost town since NO kids allowed on this cruise). Enjoy a wonderful scroll through the lush, open-air, tropical gardens of Central Park. The Boardwalk was inspired by seaside piers and features the high diving entertainment of the Aqua Theater. Connect with your fellow cruisers on the cruise line's signature Royal Promenade. Raise your glass for a toast in the Rising Tide Bar that slowly moves between the Royal Promenade on deck five and Central Park on deck eight. Looking for a thrill? Enjoy the first zip line at sea suspended nine decks high above the Boardwalk in the Pool and Sports Zone. If the zip line is not for you, relax in the sun by one of several pools and whirlpools, grab a board and go surfing or play a round of mini-golf. Need to sooth your mind, body and soul or maybe you just can't miss your workout? The Vitality at Sea Spa & Fitness Center is where you want to be. Once the sun goes down, the Entertainment Place is the life of the ship. This neighborhood offers soulful sounds of Jazz, side splitting laughter at the comedy club and music to dance the night away at Blaze nightclub.

  • Adults 21 or older only which means...NO kids allowed!
  • Open decks and pool areas are clothing optional.
  • Clothing optional shore excursions.
  • Meet & Greets to help you break the ice and meet new people.

10 Best Cruises for Singles of All Ages

From expeditions to around-the-world voyages, these sailings are perfect for solo travelers.

singles lifestyle cruise

Elizabeth Rhodes is a special projects editor at Travel + Leisure , covering everything from luxury hotels to theme parks to must-pack travel products. Originally from South Carolina, Elizabeth moved to New York City from London, where she started her career as a travel blogger and writer.

singles lifestyle cruise

Traveling the world without having to pack and unpack multiple times is ideal. And on a cruise, that's a reality as you head from destination to destination on what is basically a moving luxury hotel (or a floating city, in some cases).

Being able to sleep in Bratislava and wake up in Budapest in five-star accommodations without having to drag all your stuff with you is as convenient as it is luxurious. But cruises aren't just for couples or families — they're great for singles as well.

Colleen McDaniel, the editor-in-chief of Cruise Critic , tells Travel + Leisure that cruises are a great place to meet new people. Some ships have single cabins, host parties for single passengers, or even waive the single supplement fee (river cruises tend to do that most often).

For example, Norwegian Cruise Line offers studio cabins for single travelers that include access to an exclusive lounge with complimentary espresso and snacks. "One of the benefits of sailing as a single is cruises are generally social. That's how they're designed," McDaniel says. "If you're somebody who's comfortable traveling by themselves and looks to make friends on vacation, there's no shortage of people you're going to meet."

But while younger travelers might want to hop around Europe and party every night, someone in their 50s may be interested in a longer cruise with opportunities for cultural immersion. Whatever your travel style, here are the best cruises for singles of any age.

Cruises for Singles in Their 20s

Cruises that last three to five nights are great for singles in their 20s, in part because they're less expensive, McDaniel says. If you do end up having to pay for a single supplement, "it's a little bit less of a hit to your wallet."

Cruise line Virgin Voyages offers exciting journeys aboard their ultra-instagrammable ship, Scarlet Lady . The four-night Fire and Sunset Soirees cruise from Miami is ideal for travelers in their 20s or 30s looking for a healthy mix of party and wellness.

Another great option is a three-day cruise to the Bahamas from Miami on Norwegian Sky . The ship was refurbished in 2019 and offers 10 dining options, a full-service Starbucks, and a casino for late-night bonding around the blackjack table with your new shipmates.

Cruises for Singles in Their 30s

According to McDaniel, cruisers in their 30s are likely looking for a good mix of "bustling nightlife and engaging in classes, but they also really want to explore and experience culture." She says river cruises that offer things like silent discos and paint-and-wine classes appeal to this age group.

Expedition cruise line Atlas Ocean does not charge a single supplement fee for certain staterooms on its luxury yachts, making it a great fit for solo travelers. The cruise line is known for its culturally immersive sailings, which include tours with local guides, artisanal workshops, and even drone photography classes. Consider the Folklore & Waterfalls cruise from Reykjavik to Dublin for a chance to capture jaw-dropping landscapes while meeting like-minded travelers.

Other travelers might want to opt for a South American adventure with National Geographic. The 10-day Upper Amazon river cruise aboard the Delfin II offers a chance to spot diverse wildlife within this impressive ecosystem.

Cruises for Singles in Their 40s

Upscale, bigger cruises on ships from Princess , Holland America , and Celebrity will likely appeal to cruisers in their 40s, McDaniel says. These cruises tend to be a bit more expensive, but "appeal because they have some really great excursions and might go off the beaten path. They're destination-immersive experiences."

The seven-night Galapagos Southern Loop on Celebrity Xpedition is one fantastic option. The Galapagos Islands are a great destination for solo travelers and this cruise is a solid way to see them. Search for sea turtles, sea lions, and blue-footed boobies during the day, and spend the evening in the ship's hot tub or take in one of the nightly lectures by certified naturalists from the Galapagos National Park.

A seven-day Mediterranean with Greek Isles and Turkey cruise aboard Princess Cruises' Sun Princess is an additional option for travelers hoping to see another part of the world best explored by ship.

Cruises for Singles in Their 50s

McDaniel says that a river cruise is a great option for someone in their 50s, with some lines waiving the single supplement fee and putting age restrictions on passengers (since you may not want little kids running around). Some companies, she notes, do a great job of hosting single mixers, which adds to the social experience. A cruise along the Danube or Rhine rivers is always a great choice, and there are several lines to choose from.

Sail along the Rhine, Main, and Danube rivers on Viking's Grand European Tour , which starts in Amsterdam and ends in Budapest. Along the way, the ship stops in charming towns and major European capitals for a well-rounded trip through continental Europe.

The twelve-day Cities of Light cruise , also from Viking River Cruises, carries passengers between Paris and Prague with several stops in Germany along the way. On board, sip a glass of wine and enjoy the sight of the cities slipping by.

Cruises for Single Seniors

A world cruise is a great option for seniors, McDaniel says, as they tend to have more free time. These cruises visit multiple countries over a longer period of time, and after a while, the boat feels like home.

"One of the great things about being a senior is you tend to have a far more flexible schedule," she says. "You also likely have a bit more disposable income."

The 133-day Grand Voyage Pole to Pole from Holland America Line offers a round-trip journey from Fort Lauderdale, covering Antarctica, South America, Europe, and Canada. Overnight stops include Buenos Aires, Rio de Janeiro, Barcelona, Lisbon, and Reykjavik, Iceland, among others.

Those looking to explore both the Eastern and Western Hemisphere might enjoy Cunard's 98-night New York to Southhampton cruise. The World Voyage aboard the Queen Anne includes stops in the Caribbean and Central America before crossing the International Date Line to Samoa, New Zealand, and Australia. The ship visits various countries in Asia, such as Vietnam and Malaysia, before heading to South Africa, Spain, and England. On a cruise this long, even the shiest solo traveler is bound to make a few friends.

Celebrity Apex

The Celebrity Apex – which made its inaugural sailing in June 2021 – can hold up to 2,910 passengers at double occupancy, 3,385 at maximum occupancy and 1,320 crew members. Guests can wine and dine at 29 restaurants, bars and lounges, then spend the night testing their luck at the casino or enjoying live music at the Magic Carpet (which offers great ocean views). Specialty restaurants include a steakhouse and a raw bar, while main dining options feature Mediterranean, Italian and French cuisines. There are also meeting spaces and multipurpose areas on board, as well as upscale shops.

Visit the spa or adults-only Solarium pool to stay relaxed throughout your stay at sea. For younger travelers, there are some kid-friendly areas of the ship – such as a Camp at Sea. However, the ship is geared more toward adult clientele (or families with older children) looking for a relaxing escape.

The ship's staterooms, which start at 181 square feet, offer smart TVs, customizable air conditioning and plenty of storage space. Many rooms also offer private verandas. If you're willing to splurge, consider booking a room in The Retreat. This exclusive section of the ship features luxury accommodations as well as access to a private restaurant, sun deck and lounge. Plus, rooms in The Retreat offer more space, measuring up to 1,892 square feet.

The Celebrity Apex sails to European destinations like Italy, Croatia and Portugal, as well as to Caribbean hot spots like St. Thomas , Puerto Rico , Belize and Grand Cayman .

Scarlet Lady

The first ship within the Virgin Voyages fleet, the adults-only Scarlet Lady welcomes a maximum of 2,762 passengers and 1,150 crew members. Debuted in October 2021, Scarlet Lady boasts unique amenities not often found on cruise ships, including a tattoo studio, a record shop and a blow-dry bar. And instead of a buffet or a dining hall, the Scarlet Lady offers a collection of more than 20 specialty restaurants, all covered by the cruise fare. Standouts include Extra Virgin, a traditional Italian restaurant serving handmade pasta, and Gunbae, a Korean barbecue eatery.

The Scarlet Lady also deviates from cruise industry tradition when it comes to onboard entertainment. Instead of Broadway classics, cruisers will be treated to six original shows, along with "micro plays" that are performed throughout the ship.

Cabin sizes range from 105 to 177 square feet for the Insider rooms to over 2,160 square feet for RockStar Quarters suites. The latter are outfitted with marble bathrooms and serviced by RockStar Agents who are available to assist guests 24/7. All accommodations feature mood lighting, minibars, free Wi-Fi and adjustable Seabeds, which allow travelers to transform their beds into couches when they want to entertain.

Scarlet Lady is homeported in Miami; it sails throughout the Caribbean and Europe.

U.S. News Insider Tip:  Use the app to book dinner reservations as far out from your sailing as you can, or 45 days out for most sailors. If you wait until closer to time or until you're on board, you will likely find that the most popular restaurants and dining times are all booked up. –  Holly Johnson, Contributor

Carnival Radiance

Carnival Radiance (previously Carnival Victory) set sail in December 2021 after a full transformation. The ship, which holds 2,984 guests at single occupancy, 3,873 guests at double occupancy and 1,108 crew members, boasts plenty of fun indoors and outdoors for cruisers of all ages.

Carnival Radiance features a ropes course, waterslides, a mini-golf course, dive-in movies in the evening and a sports area for activities like soccer, basketball, volleyball and boxing. The ship also offers a kids club for youths ages 2 to 17. The pool is surrounded by lounge chairs – perfect for relaxing – and those seeking additional quiet space can spend some time at the Serenity Adult-Only Retreat. Inside, the spa, the piano bar, the comedy club and the performance event venue, which features musicals, concerts and more, round out some of Carnival Radiance's most popular offerings. Dining options (14 eateries in total, including a Chef's Table experience) abound on this ship as well: Cruisers can enjoy casual fare at Big Chicken or Guy's Burger Joint, or sit down for a more upscale meal at Cucina del Capitano, Bonsai Sushi or the Steakhouse.

Staterooms aboard the ship include Interior (porthole and picture window choices are available), Ocean View, Balcony and Suite category options. Carnival Radiance sets sail from Los Angeles to destinations in Hawaii and Mexico .

Carnival Panorama

A member of Carnival Cruise Line's Vista class, the Carnival Panorama debuted in December 2019 as the first new Carnival ship homeported on the West Coast in 20 years. With a capacity of 4,008 guests at single occupancy, 5,146 guests at double occupancy  and 1,450 crew, Panorama is one of Carnival's largest ships.

Among the ship's standout amenities is the Sky Zone – a trampoline park that offers dodgeball and basketball games, toddler bounce sessions and more. Other unique Carnival amenities found on the ship include a suspended bicycle in the air called SkyRide, a sprawling water park, the Cloud 9 Spa and an open-air recreation area and ropes course.

Dining options on board are just as diverse. In fact, there are more than a dozen dining venues aboard Carnival Panorama, including multiple Guy Fieri eateries, a sushi restaurant, a steakhouse, a seafood eatery and more.

Carnival Panorama offers the line's typical range of accommodation classes (Interior, Ocean View, Balcony and Suite) along with Family Harbor and Havana staterooms and suites. Havana Cabana Suites feature rain showers and patios equipped with hammock chairs, along with exclusive access to the Havana Bar & Pool. Meanwhile, Family Harbor accommodations are located next to the ship's Family Harbor Lounge and afford guests special perks, such as a free evening of babysitting and complimentary kids meals in the onboard specialty restaurants.

Sailing from Los Angeles , the ship cruises to destinations in Mexico, including Puerto Vallarta and Cabo San Lucas . It also departs from Singapore for transpacific voyages.

Oceania's Marina accommodates up to 1,250 passengers and employs 800 crew members, maintaining the personalized service that the line is known for.  Marina offers signature amenities like the Aquamar Spa, a casino and a 2,000-book library. Onboard entertainment includes nightly live shows, painting and sketching lessons at the Artist Loft and cooking demos at The Culinary Center. While Marina went through a refurbishment in 2016, the ship will have an updated renovation in late 2023.

Cruisers can choose from seven dining venues, including specialty restaurants like Jacques (with menus crafted by chef Jacques Pépin) and the Asian-inspired eatery Red Ginger, which recent passengers highly recommend.

Similar to its sister ship,  Riviera , cabins range from 174-square-foot Inside staterooms to 2,000-square-foot Suites. Higher category Veranda cabins and Suites come with perks like balconies, access to a Concierge Lounge, in-room iPads and more. All staterooms are equipped with flat-screen TVs, full-size bathtubs, and minibars stocked with soda and bottled water.

Oceania Marina sails to destinations in Europe, South America and more.

singles lifestyle cruise

More colorful than most of Holland America's fleet, Oosterdam launched in 2003 and was last updated in 2016. The 1,964-passenger ship houses 812 crew members, making the passenger-to-crew ratio roughly 2-to-1. The vessel holds 2,587 at maximum capacity.

The ship features six stateroom categories: Inside, Ocean View, Verandah, Signature Suite, Pinnacle Suite and Neptune Suite. All accommodations are outfitted with Sealy-Premium Euro-Top mattresses, flat-screen TVs and plenty of storage space.

Like other Vista-class ships, Oosterdam   is equipped with a large pool and a sizable spa and fitness area, along with BBC Earth Experiences and sports courts. While there are kids and teens clubs for younger passengers, most of the activities and entertainment on the ship are geared toward adults.

When it's time to dine, guests can enjoy varied dishes in the main dining room, Italian fare at Canaletto or other options ranging from casual to fine dining.

Oosterdam departs from ports in  Fort Lauderdale , Buenos Aires , Rome , Athens and more. Itineraries include destinations in Europe, South America and Antarctica.

Nieuw Statendam

One of Holland America Line's newest cruise ships, Nieuw Statendam, launched in December 2018. This 2,666-passenger ship (at double occupancy) is the second in the line's contemporary Pinnacle Class collection. Like its sister ship, Koningsdam , this vessel emphasizes elegant, eye-catching design. The ship carries 3,170 passengers at maximum capacity and 1,036 crew members.

Along with its great aesthetics, Nieuw Statendam features a mix of engaging daytime and nighttime activities, as well as facilities designed to keep guests rested and relaxed. Passengers can unwind at the spa or pools, work up a sweat at the fitness center or pickleball court or participate in enriching activities like cooking demonstrations and wine-blending classes. At night, cruisers have several entertainment options, including the B.B. King's Blues Club, Rolling Stone Rock Room or the World Stage for theatrical performances.

For dining, expect a mix of options, including a traditional dining room, casual spots and specialty restaurants that feature cuisines from Asia, France and – of course – Holland. Cabin categories are just as diverse: Accommodations range from Inside and Ocean View staterooms to Verandah staterooms to spacious suites with balconies and living areas.

Holland America now features an exclusive amenities program, Club Orange. Members can receive benefits such as a complimentary stateroom upgrade, a dedicated concierge hotline and skip-the-line priority access.

Members of Club Orange will also receive additional benefits when onboard Nieuw Statendam including a premium in-room breakfast menu and a private dining venue with an expanded menu.

Nieuw Statendam departs from Fort Lauderdale  and European ports in  Rome , Barcelona and more. It sails to various destinations in the Caribbean, Mediterranean and Europe.

U.S. News Insider Tip: If you're looking for a little outdoor privacy with pampering, book a cabana at The Retreat on one of the following ships: Eurodam, Koningsdam, Nieuw Amsterdam, Nieuw Statendam, Oosterdam, Rotterdam, Westerdam or Zuiderdam. The Retreat has double or family cabanas available to rent by the day or for the whole cruise, with an attendant for beverage and food service. – Jill Schildhouse, Contributor

Grand Princess

First launched in 1998, the 2,600-passenger Grand Princess underwent a renovation in March 2019 that added new top-deck dining venues like Alfredo's Pizzeria, Salty Dog Grill and Coffee & Cones. The Princess Theater was also refreshed to provide a more immersive audio experience. Other onboard amenities include the adults-only Sanctuary, duty-free boutiques and educational programs through the Discovery of SEA program.

The ship houses numerous dining venues, including one main dining room, two specialty venues and a variety of casual eateries serving classics like burgers and pizza. Come nightfall, passengers can enjoy cocktails at their pick of lounges.

The recently refurbished accommodations are outfitted with amenities like flat-screen TVs and minifridges. Though only 76% of exterior cabins offer private balconies – a lower percentage than other ships in the fleet – guests describe cabins as comfortable and spacious. Plus, thanks to a nearly 2-to-1 guest-to-crew ratio (the ship features 1,150 crew members), past cruisers describe the onboard service as attentive and friendly. What's more, each guest aboard Grand Princess receives an OceanMedallion wearable device to unlock his or her stateroom, make onboard payments, track down friends and family and more.

Grand Princess sails to destinations worldwide, including Alaska, Hawaii , Australia, the California coast and the South Pacific.

Cruisers can expect things like keyless cabin entry, contactless boarding, speedy Wi-Fi access (for a fee), food and drink delivery to anywhere on the ship and more.

With one main dining room, several casual eateries and four specialty dining venues – ranging from Italian to steak – guests will have no problem finding suitable spots to eat. As for entertainment, the Enchanted Princess offers musical productions, movie screenings under the stars, comedians, singers, magic acts, a casino, bars and more. Daytime activities might include playing a game of basketball or volleyball at the sports courts, relaxing in two deep tank pools and several hot tubs, or indulging in spa treatments at the Lotus Spa. What Are Singles Cruises for Seniors?

If you’re a senior who enjoys solo travel and meeting new people, you might want to book a singles cruise. These adventures can be a great way for older adults to enjoy traveling alone at surprisingly affordable prices. Beyond singles cruises, you can also look into general cruise lines that cater to the older set.

Pro Tip: To learn more about my favorite cruises, read my guide to the best cruises for seniors .

The Advantages of Singles Cruises for Seniors

Singles cruises for seniors offer many benefits, such as discounted room prices, wine tasting, and onboard entertainment –– not to mention plenty of opportunities to meet other singles.

Less planning

Since most singles cruises are all-inclusive, you don’t have to worry about last-minute itinerary planning. Most singles cruises provide a day-by-day itinerary with information on daily activities, events, and excursions. For those who want an adventurous time without having to plan, a cruise is a great option. Personally, planning travel makes me anxious, so I love handing the process over to the professionals.

Meeting new people

A singles cruise is designed to cater to people of all ages who are looking to meet new people. If you’re recently divorced or looking for a new relationship, a singles cruise offers an opportunity to meet others in a similar position. These cruises will often have programs like speed dating and dances to help facilitate interactions. Plus, some cruises cater to singles specifically, giving you a discount or “single supplement.”

Courses and events

Singles cruises offer plenty of great activities, such as wine tastings, chef-prepared meals, dancing, pool parties, concerts, and group exercises. All of this helps make it easier to meet new people.

What we like most:.

Cost: $799+ per person

Viking offers river, ocean, and expedition voyages on all seven continents. I could choose from a variety of cruise destinations, including Scandinavia, Northern Europe, Asia, and Australia. As the world’s leading small-ship cruise line, Viking Ocean Cruises has a fleet of new, state-of-the-art ocean ships, ranging from Viking Star to Viking Saturn. Each ocean ship can carry up to 930 adult guests for an intimate experience and longer overnight stays at ports. With so many adults on a boat, it was easy for me to meet people, especially at meal times.

To book a cruise, I simply visited the Viking website and selected the region, departure date, and duration of my stay. If you’re looking to travel to Scandinavia and Northern Europe for a duration of 12 days, you can choose your sail date and include a promo code to get the best deals. You can also select the number of guests and specify the type of stateroom or suite you would like to book.

Viking Ocean Cruises offers a risk-free guarantee for guests, allowing you to change your cruise date up to 14 days before your departure. Viking will also waive any change fees. Other features of this cruise include spacious veranda staterooms and suites. In addition to a variety of destinations, Viking Ocean Cruises offers special savings on both airfare and cruise costs.

FYI: Cruises aren’t the only way to meet that special someone. Consider trying one of the best dating websites for seniors .

With several destination options ranging from Antarctica, Africa, and South America, seniors can enjoy a fun solo getaway at affordable prices.

With over 28 years in business, Singles Travel International offers great savings on single supplements, free membership, and fun singles cruise meet-and-greets and cocktail hours. Other benefits include an option to find a travel companion and ongoing promotions and discounts.  For example, when I was booking my trip, I could’ve saved thousands by getting a premium membership. This is a good option if you think you want to take cruises more regularly.

Plus, when I signed up for a free membership, I got a $50 discount on my first vacation and free access to its online community for senior singles over the age of 50.

3. Silversea - Luxurious and All-Inclusive

  • Made specifically for seniors
  • Generous all-inclusive options
  • Onboard spas and fitness centers
  • Gourmet dining

Cost: $3,600+ per person

If you’re looking to pamper yourself with a luxury cruise, Silversea provides amazing shore excursions and all-inclusive service covering 900 destinations. Although pricing is on the high side, you can still find plenty of great deals on both airfare and transfers. With Silversea, you can travel and explore new destinations like the Galapagos Islands, Asia, and Alaska –– all while enjoying the views from your luxury oceanview suite.

Booking as a solo traveler, I received a 25 percent single supplement on some voyages, which means a 25 percent discount. Not every cruise line offers this discount, as each room can support two people, typically.

You can choose from all-inclusive cruises or special Silversea Expeditions luxury cruises if you’re looking to travel to remote regions. Some of the benefits of choosing Silversea include complimentary beverages, gourmet dining, shore excursions, and educational lectures on the places you’re visiting. As someone who loves to learn, I found this trip both educational and fun, not to mention delicious.

With Silversea’s all-inclusive offerings, you’ll also enjoy personalized services with butler service for all its suites. Additionally, you’ll have access to a luxurious spa and fitness center, along with a beauty salon and acupuncture services for older adults with arthritis or back pain. It was lovely to have a spa to come home to after a long day exploring!

4. Tauck World Discovery - Great Expeditions

Tauck World Discovery

  • Extensive guided land tours
  • River and ocean cruises
  • Fine dining
  • Panoramic sun decks

Cost: $3,990+ per person

Looking for a solo getaway? Tauck World Discovery offers solo cruise adventures for older adults. In addition to river and small-ship cruises, Tauck offers guided land tours in destinations like Africa, Canada, Israel and Jordan, and Latin America.

We recommend solo travelers book one of the European River Cruises. For example, I was interested in the longest, Grand European Cruise, a 25-day cruise that hits Amsterdam, Budapest, Vienna, Nuremberg, Regensburg, and Koln. It starts at $13,990. I like this cruise because it will allow me to see nine European countries and stay three nights in Bucharest. Altogether, I am going to see these countries:

  • Netherlands

Other features and benefits of booking a cruise through Tauck is that you’ll enjoy unlimited complimentary beverages, fine dining, and amenities such as a fitness center, spa, and sun deck featuring panoramic views of the river. For the European River Cruises, some of the destinations include the Danube, Douro, and Rhone rivers.

5. Holland America Line - 35-Day Trips

Holland America Line

  • Trips up to 133 days long
  • Helpful smartphone app
  • Onboard casinos
  • Wine tastings

Cost: $499+ per person

With 149 years in business, Holland America Line offers 19 cruise destinations with over 473 ports. If you’re looking for an affordable cruise option, I recommend traveling with Holland America Line. Its Worry-Free Promise program gives guests the chance to change their cruise plans or cancel for any reason up to 30 days before departure if you or a travel party tests positive for COVID-19.

Holland America Line has a fleet of 11 classic ships with destinations and ports in Alaska, Europe, the Panama Canal, Asia, and more. You can choose from seven- to 133-day cruise trips, depending on your destination and travel needs. The longest cruise goes from pole to pole, leaving and departing from Fort Lauderdale, Florida. If you’re a single senior, you’ll love the amenities the cruise ship offers, such as classical cruise ship music, theatrical shows, concerts, and other live entertainment.

Some of the additional features of this cruise line include spacious suites and staterooms, along with unique dining options and a casino. You can also use its free mobile-friendly app to personalize your cruise experience and browse your planned activities for the day. Depending on the cruise ship you choose, you can also participate in wine tastings and cooking demonstrations.

Did You Know: Before you head for the sea, be sure to have your travel insurance in order.

6. Solos Holidays - Social Activities

Solos Holidays

  • Caters to solo travelers
  • Great onboard entertainment
  • Spacious rooms
  • Ample social activities

Cost: $261+ per person

Solos Holidays caters to solo travelers who enjoy going to exciting destinations while meeting new people. Based in London, this company focuses on “singles holidays” and offers a wide selection of destinations across the globe. Some of the cruise destinations include Europe, Australia, Asia, and Africa.

I recommend going on A Taste of the Fjords. I departed from London and spent seven nights in Norway (prices start at $1,420 per person). On the ship, dining and entertainment options were plentiful, and the destinations — Bergen, Flam, and Stavanger —  were beautiful and picturesque. Plus, as a single, it was nice being with a group of eight and a tour leader, as I didn’t feel lonely. This is one of the more affordable cruise options, which is always appreciated.

7. Cunard - Great Onboard Entertainment

Cunard

  • Low starting prices
  • Orchestra performances
  • Onboard libraries and gyms
  • Planetarium shows

Cost: $699+ per person

Cunard provides luxury cruise services across the globe. In fact, in the past, it has had esteemed guests like Elizabeth Taylor and Charlie Chaplain onboard its ships. Depending on the type of vacation and travel experience you’re looking for, you can anticipate spending around $699 per person for an English cruise to up to $2,199 per person for a Caribbean cruise. This is incredibly affordable, as cruises can cost tens of thousands of dollars, which is not in my budget. Here are the prices I saw when I looked in October 2023:

When you book a cruise with Cunard, you’ll enjoy amenities such as afternoon tea, live orchestra performances, and events moderated by prolific speakers. In addition to spacious open decks and Broadway-style shows, seniors will enjoy a packed itinerary of events and activities.

Other features include twice-daily turndown services, concierge services, personal butlers, great dining options, and complimentary room service. Guests can also enjoy group dance classes, planetarium shows, and access to the library and gym facilities.

We recommend choosing one of its seven-day transatlantic cruises onboard its Queen Mary 2. The best part is you’ll have access to live performances from the Royal Shakespeare Company, along with various accommodations to make your stay enjoyable. Cruises start at $849 per person for a Christmas 2023 voyage.

8. Riviera River Cruises - Great for Solo Travelers

Riviera River Cruises

  • Luxurious amenities
  • Niche destinations
  • Flexible trips

Cost: $899+ per month

Riviera River Cruises offers several river cruises in Europe and other destinations around the world. Solo travelers can expect to pay around $899 to $5,479 for longer-duration trips.

If you enjoy solo traveling without sharing a room, then we’d recommend the Rhine, Strasbourg & Heidelberg River Cruise for Solo Travelers. This eight-day cruise starts at $2,449 per person and features eight guided tours, a live classical quartet recital, daily meals, and five-star services. For this particular cruise, you’ll embark in Cologne and visit destinations like the Rhine Gorge and the historic Mainz port. Plus, there are departures aimed at solo travelers specifically, which start at $2,749 per person. Unfortunately, there’s no single supplement, but there are also no additional fees; I paid the listed price, which was a welcome departure from other cruise lines and their many hidden fees.

When you choose Riviera River Cruises, you’ll enjoy amenities and features like daily morning and afternoon tea and coffee, along with full daily meals, complimentary Wi-Fi, and the option to extend your cruise. Other benefits include access to an expert cruise director and concierge services to help make for an enjoyable stay.

Regent Seven Seas Cruises

  • Over 450 ports
  • Great discounts
  • Spacious accommodations
  • Tours up to 21 days in length

Cost: $6,074+ per person

Regent Seven Seas Cruises offers all-inclusive luxury travel around the world, with over 450 ports of call. Each ship can carry up to 750 guests, with destinations in Africa, Arabia, Alaska, Asia, and the Mediterranean. The average price with the single supplement ranges from $6,074 per person from Cape Town to Rio De Janeiro to as high as $12,562 for an 18-day cruise from Sydney to Singapore.

Not every cruise line offers discounted prices for singles, so although these prices are on the higher side, they’re a good option for singles who want a more luxurious experience and have the funds for it.

Some of the benefits of choosing a cruise from Regent Seven Seas Cruises include all-inclusive fares, free open bars, and unlimited beverages, along with free access to specialty restaurants. You’ll also receive free unlimited internet and up to a 50 percent discount for a reduced single supplement for select suite categories.

Bottom Line

If you’re single and want to meet new people, a cruise can be a great way to step out of your comfort zone. Many cruises cater to solo travelers and single seniors, providing ample opportunities to participate in mixers, galas, and other activities aboard a ship. Many cruise lines will often offer great discounts for those who book one-passenger trips, so be on the lookout for those deals throughout the year.

The Beginner’s Guide to Hooking Up on a Cruise

Sunshine. Vacation. Swimsuits…

Is there a better combination for a having a romantic encounter? Yes, actually. Add all those elements and then combine them on a cruise ship where everyone will be together for several days, all having a similar experience.

Sexy lips

It shouldn’t be a surprise, then, that hookups can and do happen on a cruise. Call it love, call it romance, call it a one-night stand. No matter what you call it, there are people on every cruise that end up getting down after meeting on the ship.

Of course, if you’re interested in hooking up on a cruise, there are ways that you can increase your odds… and a few things that you should consider before doing so.

We’re not here to tell you not to have a good time, but you should definitely know some things before you try to get it on with a stranger met on the ship.

DO be careful

Let’s get this out of the way. If you’re going to try to have some romance on a cruise ship, you need to be careful. Even though cruise ships can seem like sanitized vacations where everything is safe and clean, hooking up with strangers always carries risk. Use common sense, and listen to your gut.

Don’t go back to someone else’s cabin if you don’t feel comfortable. Protect your drink and don’t overindulge to the point that you can’t keep your wits. Wear protection if you have sex.

Sexual assault is the most common major crime reported on cruise ships, with dozens of cases reported on U.S. cruises in 2023 . Given the millions of people that sail annually, that may not be that many, but that’s little consolation to those who are victims.

This isn’t meant to scare you. Hooking up on a cruise can be a fun and memorable experience. Just don’t let it turn into a nightmare by doing something at sea that you wouldn’t do on land.

DO attend singles’ events

Every cruise will usually have singles’ mixers during the course of the cruise. If you’re looking for a partner, the playing field doesn’t get any better than this. Put on your best outfit, have a drink or two, and go scope out the scene.

You’ll find the schedule in the ship’s daily planner. They are normally in the evening around dinner time at a specific bar. While the mixers last about an hour, the key is to take the next step of extending from the mixer to other things on the ship.

For instance, if you’re feeling that things are clicking with someone, you can ask them to dinner or to have another drink after others might have left. There’s no shortage of things to do around the ship to keep the evening going.

DO hit up the late-night bars

Let’s face it. If you’re wanting to get lucky, then that’s usually not going to happen at 10 a.m. You’ve got to be out and about when people are thinking about romance.

The best place we can suggest is to check out the ship’s bars later in the evening. Here you’ll find people that like to have a good time (but that doesn’t necessarily mean they want to hook up). Just like on land, if you’re looking for love, a late-night bar is the right place to look.

As mentioned, it’s fine to have some drinks, but don’t get sloppy. Just because a cruise ship is relatively safe doesn’t mean you should let your common sense take a rest.

DON’T be bashful

You don’t want to come across as creepy by being too aggressive, but remember that your time on the cruise ship is short. There is no time to be bashful or play the long game. If you see someone that you’re attracted to, make an effort to talk to them. If you wait until you get up the nerve, then your time on the ship could already be over.

So go ahead and take that risk of striking up a conversation… or making a move to ask someone to dinner. The worst that can happen is that they say no. After the end of your cruise you won’t see them again anyway, so there is not a big risk of being embarrassed.

DON’T be too picky

If you really want to hook up on your cruise, then you’re likely going to have to forget being picky.

Remember that even the biggest cruises will have at most about 4,000-6,000 people. Once you whittle down that number to only men or women… the people that are single… and the people in your age range… the number gets to be pretty small. The “ocean” just isn’t that big on a cruise ship.

If you’re looking for companionship during the sailing, then those that have the most success will be those who cast the widest net.

DO select the right time of year to sail

The demographics of a cruise ship change dramatically throughout the year. Want to sail with a younger crowd with more singles? Check out Spring Break or summer cruises. Cruises that sail in the fall when school is back in session will have older crowds if you’re looking for a fling with a more mature person.

In general, cruise ships have all ages on board. But as a rule of thumb, shorter sailings tend to have younger crowds. So if you’re in college, then a three-day cruise would likely have more people your age that are single. Longer trips tend to see older passengers.

DON’T expect to hook up with the crew

Young, international, good looking. The crew on a cruise ship — such as personable bartenders or the fit entertainment staff — seem like they would be a prime hunting ground for a quick fling. Don’t do it.

Crew members are on strict orders that hooking up with passengers is forbidden. It can easily cost them their job. Keep your efforts to other passengers and not the crew.

DO remember you have to share the ship

If you are looking to hook up on a cruise, the chances are you aren’t looking for love or anything long-term. Even so, the idea of getting with someone early in the trip and then ghosting them is not great.

Remember, you are on a small, floating city. If you do something like hook up with a person on the second day and then try to avoid them the rest of the cruise, you’re going to be constantly looking over your shoulder.

Instead, avoid any awkwardness by only getting together with someone you can stand hanging out with for the remainder of your cruise.

The best adults-only cruises to try if you can’t stand being around kids on vacation

Gene Sloan

What are the best adults-only cruises — the ones that not only ban kids but cater to grown-up tastes and interests?

You may be asking because you just spent time on a megaship where the kids took over the pools and hot tubs (not to mention the elevators), much to your chagrin. Or, you might be looking for a vacation with more lectures and less limbo, or perhaps a cruise that skews more R-rated than G.

The list of cruises for adults only is, alas, very short. Only a handful of cruise lines ban children from their ships and promise cruises for grown-ups — perhaps the most notable being cruise newcomer Virgin Voyages and fast-growing Viking .

The trend in recent years in cruising is, in fact, more family-focused, with more kids appearing on ships of all types. Indeed, some of the biggest, best-known cruise brands have gone full-bore after the family market , to the extent that the sun-soaked top decks of their ships sometimes can feel more like a scene out of "Daddy Day Care" than a blissful vacation retreat.

For more cruise guides, tips and news, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

Don't despair, though. Even as many lines double down on the family market, a small group of cruise operators remains all-in on the idea of adult-only cruises.

Here are our picks for the best adults-only cruise lines, with a grown-up vibe to boot.

Related: A beginners guide to picking a cruise line

Virgin Voyages

singles lifestyle cruise

The much-ballyhooed new line from Sir Richard Branson's Virgin Group has banned children under the age of 18 from its ships. It's part of an effort to create a hipper, more-sophisticated, adult-focused vibe that company leaders think is sorely lacking in the cruise world.

"We have done a ton of research really trying to create a sophisticated experience," Virgin Voyages CEO Tom McAlpin said in the days before the line's 2021 debut . "I've done some personal research. We found that when you put kids in the pool, they scream, and we don't want that."

Related: I've been on more than 150 cruise ships. Here's what I thought of Scarlet Lady

Virgin Voyages' first three adults-only cruise ships, the 2,770-passenger Scarlet Lady and sister vessels Valiant Lady and Resilient Lady , cater to grown-ups looking for a decidedly adult sort of fun with such offerings as interactive dance parties and a drag queen performance. It also offers a karaoke lounge with pink-and-purple karaoke rooms and a tattoo parlor (read about how one of our staffers was among the first to get inked on board ).

What you won't find on the three ships (a fourth is due later this year) are waterslides, watery splash zones, teen lounges and all the other family-friendly features that are becoming so common on bigger ships.

singles lifestyle cruise

To create an adults-only cruise experience, Virgin Voyages took a page from fast-growing Viking 's playbook. Viking's 12-ship ocean cruise division has banned children under the age of 18 since it debuted in 2015. In addition, its 80-ship river cruise division has had a minimum age limit for more than two decades. (Initially, the cut-off was age 12; as of 2019, that jumped to 18, too.)

Not that Virgin and Viking are anything alike. Virgin is designed to appeal to millennials and older travelers who want to party like they are millennials. Viking, by contrast, is the anti-millennial line.

Viking's target market is squarely in the 55-plus bracket. It zeroes in on that demographic with an upscale, destination-focused experience that is heavy on what the industry likes to call "enrichment" — onboard lectures and other learning opportunities. It also emphasizes tours focused on history and culture (with at least one free excursion in each port) and entertainment offerings that veer more toward string quartets than dancers in string bikinis.

"What we're looking to do is try not to be everything for everyone," Viking's executive vice president of marketing, Richard Marnell, told TPG. "We do not have a kids' program. What we have is . . . [an] immersive experience that is best suited for people that are intellectually curious."

P&O Cruises

singles lifestyle cruise

This storied British line clearly sees the demand for adults-only cruise ships, but it isn't giving up on the family market, either. The line splits the difference between the two segments. Five of its seven vessels (Arvia, Iona, Britannia, Ventura and Azura) are marketed as "family-friendly" and open to passengers of all ages. The other two (Arcadia and Aurora) are reserved exclusively for adults.

Given that more than 95% of the Southampton, England-based cruise line's passengers are British, you'll probably want to be either British yourself or a major Anglophile to consider booking one of the latter two vessels. Sailing with P&O Cruises is a very British experience, something that becomes clear the moment you see its vessels. They feature hulls painted with massive Union Jacks.

In addition, you'll find quintessentially British offerings on board P&O Cruises ships, such as elaborate afternoon teas, quoits on the top deck and restaurant menus designed by chefs big in the United Kingdom, such as Marco Pierre White.

That said, if you're a Princess Cruises fan, you might feel right at home on a P&O Cruises ship. Nestled under the same corporate umbrella, the two brands are longtime sisters that have swapped ships back and forth (though Holland America fans might be interested to know that Arcadia actually shares a ship design with that line's Vista class).

For booking purposes, P&O Cruises considers anyone who will be 18 or older when sailing an adult.

Saga Cruises

singles lifestyle cruise

Like P&O Cruises, Saga Cruises is a British line that has honed in on the business of offering voyages just for adults. But it goes way beyond what P&O Cruises or any other line does in shunning younger travelers. The minimum age at Saga Cruises isn't 18 or even 21 — it's 50.

That's right — you won't find a single millennial or even that many Generation Xers on board a Saga Cruises ship (at 58, even the oldest members of Generation X only make the cut-off by eight years). You will find a heck of a lot of baby boomers, many of them retired.

Saga Cruises operates just two ocean vessels, sailing exclusively out of the U.K., plus several river ships. Like P&O Cruises, it's a product that is probably best for British travelers or big-time Anglophiles.

Other adult-focused cruises

In addition to lines that ban passengers under the age of 18 outright, a number of cruise operators allow young children but get relatively few of them.

Examples include such upscale lines as Regent Seven Seas Cruises , Silversea Cruises and Seabourn , which cater heavily to an older crowd. Small-ship specialist Windstar Cruises allows tweens and teenagers on its six ships, but it doesn't allow any children under the age of 8.

Scenic Luxury Cruises & Tours, which sells both ocean and river cruises, traditionally discourages customers from bringing passengers under the age of 12 on vessels except during Christmas holiday sailings.

Also, the longer the cruise, the fewer children you will find. Book a two-plus-week sailing to a more exotic location, like Asia or South America, during the school year on a line like Holland America or Princess, and you'll share the ship predominantly with adults.

‘you have to develop a sense of toughness’: how this mogul went from foster care to starting a $25m beauty brand.

Now the owner of Blessed Bananas Hair Care and Lasio Professional Hair Care, Nadine Ramos grew up between the projects in the Lower East Side with her single mother and foster care. She didn’t want to “fall victim and become a statistic of my surroundings,” so she turned her struggles into determination. “That toughness has helped me to develop grit, which allows me to not give up,” she said.

Making her way from foster care in the Lower East Side to creating a beauty business valued at $25 million, entrepreneur Nadine Ramos credits New York City for being the city that made her.

“The concrete jungle, as they say, will either make you or break you,” the 45-year-old native New Yorker told The Post.

Ramos’ mother and grandparents came from Puerto Rico in the late 50s “with just the clothes on their backs and a whole lot of determination to make a life for themselves in New York.”

Nadine Ramos

Now the owner of Blessed Bananas Hair Care and Lasio Professional Hair Care , Ramos grew up in the projects in the Lower East Side with her single mother and two sisters. Her mother struggled with several issues, including drug addiction, which led Ramos to be placed in foster care from the ages of 7 to 10.

Even after being reunited with her family, life wasn’t easy.

“I dealt with a lot,” she bluntly stated.

But when her beloved mother passed away in 2000, Ramos was living in public housing and starting to go down a bad path.

“The year that I lost her, I had a choice to either do something great and risky with my life or fall victim and become a statistic of my surroundings,” she recounted.

That was around the time she saw a Brazilian man giving keratin hair treatments to local ladies out of his apartment.

Nadine Ramos

Ramos instantly recognized the magic of keratin — a treatment not yet popularized in the US — and knew she had to do something.

“I’ve always been a lover of everything beauty and fashion. Looking good made me feel good despite my circumstances and the hardships we were living in,” Ramos said. “So when I saw the transformation that this treatment did to the client, I knew instantly. The light bulb went off. I had to make it mine.”

The Brazilian man refused to share his secret, so Ramos boldly determined that she would raise money from family and friends, go to Brazil and discover the secret of keratin herself.

Nadine Ramos

She set off on her first international trip in 2001, found a formula and brought it back to NYC where she worked with a chemist to perfect it and meet US regulations. After that, she spent the next five years pouring all her time and money into creating a line of hair products.

“I went through every type of emotion but I was in so far there was no turning back,” Ramos admitted.

“When you grow up in the New York City projects, you have to develop a sense of toughness, to you. And I believe that that toughness has helped me to develop grit, which allows me to not give up. That allows me to not take no for an answer.”

Nadine Ramos

“I believe that every no can turn into a maybe and then a yes. And it’s important in business to be able to have that skill set of not easily folding.”

That determination led Ramos to make over $1 million in her first year in business with Lasio Professional Hair Care, now valued at $25 million. She also was able to expand her offerings: Her Blessed Bananas Hair Care line uses US-grown pure banana oil as its secret for beautiful tresses.

Ramos is the owner of Blessed Bananas Hair Care and Lasio Professional Hair Care.

“I feel that my neighborhood, a community of young individuals struggling in the same exact atmosphere and coming together and supporting each other, made all the difference for me,” Ramos said.

“Believe it or not, it was. It was that community that I found in New York City in the Lower East Side, that helped me to to run after my dreams.”

8 reasons why a cruise is the answer to a stress-free holiday with kids

For an easy, relaxing getaway that all the family will love, look no further than a cruise

family cruises

While holidays are an exciting time for all the family – you get to spend quality time together, make special memories and escape the routine of daily life – going away with kids can undoubtedly be stressful. Packing and long periods of travel can be testing, but also finding a trip that the whole family will love can be tricky.

The answer? A cruise! Whether you've got young children requiring lots of attention or teenagers wanting to do their own thing, a family cruise will entertain everybody. From fascinating port stops and shore excursions, to kids’ clubs and fun activities onboard, all interests and energy levels are catered for.

There's also plenty for (perhaps exhausted) parents to enjoy too, what with alfresco pools and hot tubs, cocktail bars, quiz nights, adults-only relaxation areas and luxurious spas onboard as well.

A cruise holiday also makes visiting multiple destinations easy, as once you're onboard, you needn't worry about logistics, important documents or packing and unpacking everyone's suitcase all over again. As a family, you'll get to see a range of fantastic places in just one trip by simply hopping on and off your ship .

Never considered booking a cruise as your family getaway? Read on for more on the above and other reasons why a cruise is the ultimate multi-generational holiday, however big your brood is...

Explore wonderful destinations together

why a family cruise is a stress free holiday with kids

As we've already said, a cruise is a great way to tick off numerous destinations in one trip, but choosing which destinations is the hard bit.

Visiting over 100 destinations around the globe, Marella Cruises have itineraries that sail around the Western Mediterranean , the Easter Mediterranean , the Canary Islands and the Caribbean .

Their Adriatic Delights itinerary takes in the Croatian city of Dubrovnik (ideal for any Game of Thrones fans in the family) and the Italian city of Trieste (lots of gelato will keep everyone sweet!), but if you're keen to go further afield, the idyllic beaches and tropical wildlife in the likes of St Lucia, Antigua (pictured) and Barbados in the Caribbean won't fail to impress. Decisions, decisions...

Share incredible experiences when there

why a family cruise is a stress free holiday with kids

When docked in different ports, you can go off and explore on your own. However, most cruise lines offer a huge selection of shore excursions, from coach tours around historic cities and natural beauty spots to small-group experiences like cooking classes, boat trips and sometimes even helicopter rides.

With Marella Cruises, you can sign up to shore excursions before your cruise departure or visit the guest services desk when onboard, where their excursions experts can help you pick the right one for all the family.

Whether the kids will love hearing stories of gladiator battles on a guided tour of the Colosseum in Rome or seeing the volcanic craters of Lanzarote on an off-piste biking trip, there's something for everyone.

There's a club for all ages onboard...

why a family cruise is a stress free holiday with kids

Large, family-friendly cruise ships have clubs and activity centres for kids of all ages, which offer a safe, caring and stimulating space for children to enjoy themselves. Better still, they can largely attend without parents, giving you some much-needed adults-only time.

On a Marella cruise ship, children from 3 to 17 years are catered for by free activity clubs . M Club offers daily sessions for 3-11 year olds, where arts and crafts, quizzes and mini-discos are all in store, while tricky teens can escape their parents in The Hideout, where they'll find gaming consoles, comfy sofas and silent discos. Under 3s aren’t left out though, as hosted, parent-toddler 'babytainment' sessions take place daily, too.

... and plenty to do as a family

why a family cruise is a stress free holiday with kids

Holidays are for spending quality time together too, which is a breeze when on a cruise. Together you can splash in the pool, devise a family mini golf tournament or come together for an evening in the onboard theatre, where you can catch West End-style musicals and other live entertainment.

Exclusively on Marella Cruises, you'll find Gamer Zone, a dedicated space where even the biggest of kids (we're looking at Dad here!) can challenge everyone on retro gaming machines.

Don't miss Movies by Moonlight either, where brand-new films and box-office classics are screened out on deck, under the stars. Popcorn included!

Fussy eaters won't complain

why a family cruise is a stress free holidays with kids

Even the pickiest of eaters will be impressed with the dining options on a cruise holiday.

Most ocean cruise liners have a selection of restaurants onboard, each with different dress codes and levels of formality. When booking, make sure your ship has a casual buffet-style venue that offers food from all over the globe, then you won't have to worry about being too noisy around other diners. You can dictate the pace of the meal (speed is of the essence sometimes, we know), and every palate will, quite literally, be catered for.

No one will go hungry with Marella Cruises, as you'll find an around-the-world buffet, fine dining restaurants, sushi bars, steakhouses, pizza joints and poolside grab-and-go eateries all onboard. Save room for dessert though, as there's no shortage of ice cream...

There's accommodation to suit families of all size

why a family cruise is a stress free holiday with kids

If you're concerned about space or the expense of having to book numerous cabins to fit everyone in, worry not. Most cruise ships have an allocation of staterooms designed to accommodate additional people – there will be beds that fold out from the cabin walls or sofa beds in the lounge area.

On Marella Cruises ships, there are cabins available with either fold-down beds or a sofa bed, so it's easy to accommodate a 3rd or 4th person.

Travelling as an even bigger group? You can book one of Marella's family cabins, which utilise the living spaces to sleep up to seven people.

You can go all-inclusive

why a family cruise is a stress free holiday with kids

Nobody likes an unexpected bill, especially at the end of a lovely trip – talk about ruining your post-holiday zen! – so avoid any surprise costs by opting for an all-inclusive cruise.

If you're holidaying on a strict budget (or have kids with appetites that know no bounds), paying up front for an all-in package, which usually include all meals, soft drinks and alcohol when onboard, enables you to know final costs in advance.

Sometimes packages include transfers from transport hubs as well as flights and checked luggage if you're embarking on a fly-cruise (a cruise that doesn't depart from the UK).

You can often find low-deposit deals and offers too, like at Marella Cruises, where the initial deposit for a family cruise can be as low as £100 per person.

You can enjoy the best of both

why a family cruise is a stress free holiday with kids

If you can't pick between a resort stay or a cruise for the next big family holiday, how about combing the two?

Being a part of TUI, Marella Cruises are able to offer Cruise & Stay options, where you can spend a few days, or even a week, in a hand-selected hotel or apartment after disembarking your cruise. Alternatively, you can spend a week in a hotel before setting sail.

Marella Cruises will take care of transfers between the airport, your ship and your on-land accommodation, so the only thing you need to worry about is having a fabulous holiday – and where you packed the suncream, of course...

Ted Lange Once Confronted Aaron Spelling About White Cast's Prominence on Love Boat : 'Why Can't I Greet People?'

The actor, who played bartender Isaac on the series, reunited with his costars Fred Gandy, Bernie Kopell and Jill Whelan on the Enchanted Princess cruise ship

Ted Lange served up drinks and a smile behind the bar on The Love Boat , but behind the scenes, he wanted the show to serve up equal representation, too.

While speaking on The Love Boat  Legacy: Original Cast Reflections panel on Princess Cruise ’s Love Boat Celebration sailing alongside costars Fred Gandy, Bernie Kopell and Jill Whelan , Lange recalled sitting down with the show’s executive producer Aaron Spelling and asking why his character Issac couldn’t be more front and center with the guests.

“We had a meeting with Aaron because I had some complaints about the show,” Lange, 76, told the crowd on the Enchanted Princess on Sunday, Sept. 1. “And they brought us in to talk to Aaron and he said, ‘Well, Ted, what's your complaint?’ I said, ‘Well, you got all the white guys in the front of the show. You got all the white guys in the back of the show.’ They said, ‘Well, what are your problems? You're one of the stars.’ I said, ‘Yeah, but why can't I greet people coming on to the ... because everybody does. And why can't I say goodbye after I've helped them with their problems?’"

The Love Boat ran from 1977-87 for 10 seasons, and from Saturday, Aug. 31-Saturday, Sept. 7, Princess Cruises celebrates the show and the impact it had on cruising with a sail filled with cast meet and greets, Love Boat trivia, show themed specialty cocktails, episode viewings by the pool and a vow renewal officiated by the cast. Lange hosts cocktail demonstrations onboard, the first of which drew a standing room only crowd at the ship’s Princess Live! venue.

For the 100 guests who opted for the Love Boat VIP Package, the itinerary — which features stops in Boston, Eastport, Maine, Nova Scotia and Canada's New Brunswick — also included an exclusive welcome reception with the stars and a cast dinner.

“I remember one episode where Doc said, ‘Hey, I talked to Isaac, and he told me you took his advice and he wants to say congrats,’” Lange continued at the panel moderated by author Jim Colucci. “Well, I said to the producer, ‘Why can't I say that? Why can't I be there?’ And the producer at the time said, ‘Well, what would a bartender be doing there?’ And I said, ‘What would the Doc be doing there? What would the captain be doing there? He should be on the bridge.’ And we ironed that out.”

Afro American Newspapers/Gado/Getty

During that same meeting, Lange claimed that castmate Gavin MacLeod, who played the boat’s captain and died in 2021 at age 90 , asked for a deeper story arc.

“Gavin says, ‘I'm servicing guest stars and I don't have a story. I would like to have a story instead of helping Ginger Rogers find Fred Astaire. I want to do something,’” Lange said. “And so they said, ‘Well, we'll figure out a way that we can do a personal story.’ And I think that's when you happened, because it then elevated Gavin's position as a character, as a single father. And that wasn't prevalent at the time that we were doing our show.”

Never miss a story — sign up for PEOPLE's free daily newsletter to stay up-to-date on the best of what PEOPLE has to offer, from celebrity news to compelling human interest stories.

Lange also remembered how the show’s makeup artist “accidentally” trimmed his signature mustache — which he grew to look older after playing a teenager on That’s My Mama — at the request of producer Doug Cramer.

“They wanted me to cut my mustache to here,” Lange said, gesturing to his face. “And I remember we had a makeup guy named Larry Darr. We called him Cowboy. He wore a big cowboy hat. He was a cowboy. And so I'm sitting in the makeup chair and he says, ‘Ted, your mustache is a little uneven. Want me to even it up?’ So I go, ‘Oh yeah, sure Larry.’ And he goes, ‘Whoops.’ And I go, ‘Hey man, what are you doing?’ He says, ‘Well, now I got to cut here to even it up over here.’ And I said, "Okay, what's going on?’ He says, ‘What do you mean?’”

The actor pressed Darr on his intentions, telling the makeup artist, “You're the finest makeup artist in Hollywood,” and acknowledging that Darr wouldn’t make a mistake like cutting a mustache by accident.

Eventually, Darr admitted, “‘Well, Doug Cramer wanted to shorten the mustache,’” Lange said. “And this is the third year. They hadn't noticed for three years! … So that's how that happened, is that Doug Cramer asked Larry Darr to … rather than just say, ‘Hey, Ted, can we talk to you? We'd like to...’ I would've said, ‘Yeah, sure.’”

Princess’s next Love Boat Celebration at Sea themed cruise will sail from Galveston, Texas on Regal Princess from Nov. 16-23, 2025 and makes stops throughout Mexico at Cozumel, Costa Maya and Roatan.

Home / Russia Travel Experiences / Kazan Travel Guide – Perfect Your Travel Itinerary

Craving a one-of-a-kind, awe-inspiring trip to a place of ancient histories, visually spectacular, and spiritual marvels? The Kazan Travel Guide has everything you need to get just that.

Kazan is the capital of the Tatarstan Republic, also known as Russia’s third capital. Just an hour-and-a-half flight away from Moscow, this beautiful and thriving metropolis has a centuries-old history. Founded in 1005, Kazan is one of Russia’s oldest cities (older than Moscow) with sites and architecture reminiscent of its glorious 12th-century reign by the river Kazanka. The multiethnic region is famous for the harmonious co-existence of many different religions, whose sculpted sacred sites are some of the world’s most beautiful buildings. You’ll find a sublime fusion of Tatar and Russian culture in this city, creating a glorious melting pot of different cultures. Whilst predominantly Muslim, you will find all religious backgrounds within the republic. Discover how easy it is to be entranced by the captivating Kazan – it is even worth making a detour on the Trans-Siberian Railway for.

This Kazan Travel Guide will help you plan everything down to preferred months of travel according to seasonal highlights, main attractions, meals from our pick of Tatar cuisine delicacies, methods of transport, and activities from morning until noon.

Why travel to Russia’s Kazan?

Kazan kremlin.

Kazan Travel Guide

This UNESCO listed fortified citadel is the most familiar landmark of Kazan. Kazan Kremlin is full of cozy parks, picturesque streets, delectable foods, and beautiful sites. Take a tour through the only surviving Tatar fortress in Russia and lose yourself in its Middle Ages era splendor with this heritage-listed site. Many of the Kremlin’s architectural wonders are sculpted by the famous Postnik Yakovlev and Ivan Shirjay, recruited by the Tzar. Kazan Kremlin is also home to the Söyembikä Tower and museums, where Kazan’s extensive history and legends take centre-stage. Many also flock to the multi-faith place of worship for its glorious sculpted sacred sites such as Kul Sharif Mosque.

Söyembikä Tower

Kazan Travel Guide

Kazan’s tiered tower of Soyembika, also known as the leaning tower or ‘Khan’s Mosque’ is the highlight of Kazan Kremlin. Its construction is recorded by scholars to date back as far as the 16th century, whose age-old history is expressed in some of its majestic colonial architecture. The colours are stunning in summer, and even in winter, the snow creates a fairytale-like scene. Once inside, you should pay attention to the haram carpet and elaborate details on the ceiling. Romantic and mystic legends surround the tower and the only woman to rule the Kazan Khanate for which it’s named after. It is said to be the same tower that led the beautiful Princess Syuyumbike to her death, built for her by Ivan the Terrible who seized Kazan in 1552 and then demanded they wed. Others tell a different history of a Soyembika forcibly detained here by Muscovite forces, before being taken to Kasimov where she died. For those interested in its story, be wary of self-nominated guides- the official Kazan guides are a purchase worth making. Despite its tragic history, many locals believe if you touch the tower and make a wish it will come true.

Kul Sharif Mosque

Kazan Travel Guide

The Kul Sharif Mosque is Kazan Kremlin’s main mosque and one of the city’s most beautiful buildings. You will hardly be able to take your eyes off this one-of-a-kind structure. This attraction is not just for Muslims. It is open to all Kazan’s travellers, but it is preferred that women have their hair covered during their visit. The Kul Sharif Mosque takes the place of a former mosque conquered by Ivan the Terrible in 1552. From outside, the majestic lotus-flowered dome landmark sits atop a hill overlooking Kazan. Inside, it’s fitted with a modern yet classical interior where you can pray with the names of 99 gods inscribed on ceilings and window glass. On the ground floor is a Museum of Islam, where a tour in English may be available if there’s an English-speaking docent on shift. Otherwise, there are booklets in English that explain the whole exhibit. Whilst everything is free to all visitors, they ask you pay 3 rubles for shoe slip-covers to help keep its floors clean. It is recommended you go in the morning to avoid a queue to visit the Kul Sharif Mosque, boasting a reputation as one of the best mosques in the world.

Temple of All Religions

Kazan Travel Guide

For those interested in the spiritual marvels of Russia, it is also recommended you see the Temple of all Religions located along the Volga river of Kazan . This is under construction, so it’s not a must-see, but worth the visit if you have time to kill before taking a train or bus. It boasts 16 towers all for various different religions- a stunning sight to behold from the outside.

Baumana street

Kazan Travel Guide

The Baumana Street is the main tourist and pedestrian zone between the Kremlin and Tokai Square. Tatarstan restaurants, stalls of street painters, boutiques, souvenir shops, fountains that fulfil wishes and kiosks are just a few of its gems that are ready to assure your every need and charm your socks off. Monuments and fountains make for a perfect photo backdrop, with statuary ranging from a bronze carriage of Catherine II to the “thick lazy Cat of Kazan”, a tribute to its feline protectors who fended off mice. Whilst mingling with the locals, the rich chimes of Kazan’s bell tower help bring the vibrant Arbat to life. Baumana street’s historical attractions include houses of the 19 th century, a monument to Feodor Chaliapin, and a Russian baroque style Epiphany cathedral. For opportunists seeking for the perfect Russian souvenir, Baumana street is the place to buy everything: Matryoshka dolls, Tatar folk costumes, and one particular favourite of tourists is the Tatar national male headwear “Tubeteika”. This is a street that never sleeps- when the sun sets, it becomes a hub for nightlife.

Palace of Farmers

Kazan Travel Guide

The Palace of Farmers is a vast and regal building like something out of a fairytale. Despite being a recent addition to Kazan’s collection of ancient sites, it looks to be built well over a century ago. This eclectic architectural piece boasts elements of Classicism style, the Second Empire, and the Belle Epoque. A magnificent, 65-foot tall bronze tree sculpture grows in the archway of the palace’s façade- a sight that makes for a mesmerizing photo backdrop. This is a governmental building related to agriculture, so the interior is not accessible. However, it’s worthwhile just to see its magnificently sculpted exterior. Located adjacent to the Kremlin and Kazan river embankment, the Farmer’s Palace makes for beguiling scenery for your riverside stroll. Manicured gardens out front create a serene, relaxing space in the summer sunshine, the site’s most popular season. When the sun sets, the Palace of Farmers comes alive with an array of spectacular light displays.

Raifa Monastery

Kazan Travel Guide

Whilst known as one of the largest monasteries in Russia, Raifa Monastery had humble beginnings as a place of solitude where monastic followers could dedicate themselves to God. Found in a serene location by Sumy Lakes in a lush pine forest, this centuries-old site has been rebuilt time and time again. Its history tells of temple destruction, brutal plundering, arson, and has once made a home for juvenile delinquents. The history behind the monastery’s name is no exception to this trail of tragedies. In fact, the hermitage was established and named in memory of holy fathers tortured in Sinai and Raithu. Abandoned for over half a century, the ruins have been given new life with well doted on additions. This includes the Holy Trinity Cathedral, the Cathedral of God’s Mother of Georgia, the Church of the Ss Reverend Fathers and bell tower, with beautiful onion-domed architecture and intricate iconography. It’s free to wander monastery grounds, where small shops and cafes populate the area. Arrive at this stunning rural monastery via a 40-minute drive from Kazan (with some free parking available), bus tour, or a scenic boat trip.

Sviyazhsk Island

Kazan Travel Guide

Sviyazhsk Island, or “Conqueror City”, began as a fortress for Ivan the Terrible in 1551 when Kazan was an unassailable fortress. Frozen in time, visiting the Island is like going through a time machine with no fewer than 37 cultural-historical monuments. Its religious marvels are a must-see. Trinity Church is the last of its kind in Sviyazhsk- a wooden structure dating back to the time of Ivan the Terrible. Axe marks made by Yaroslavl carpenters can still be seen. The Dormition Cathedral boasts a glorious collection of 16th-century frescos. Its most famed is St Christopher with a horse’s head- a fresco that tells the story of a saint so handsome he pleaded to God for ugliness, to avoid unwanted attention from women. However, these monasteries have seen their fair share of horrors- the Soviet political repression saw them turn into prisons, concentration camps, and psychiatric hospitals. A local museum, Sviyazhsk State Museum of History and Architecture, is no stranger to these horrors. Here, inmates and prisoners were executed and their belongings are still on display in abandoned cells inside. A monument to the victims of political repression forms a two-meter-tall marble slab on the island.

The Ancient City of Bolgar

Kazan Travel Guide

Not far from Kazan, Russia’s mysterious Muslim City, Bolgar, dates back to the 7th and 15th centuries. With such a powerful history, this Eurasian metropolis is one of Russia’s first UNESCO listed sites. It’s served as the capital of the Mongol Golden Horde, ruled by the founder of the Timurids Empire, and even the Prince of Moscow. A 1969 excavation for the State Historical and Architectural Museum and Reserve saw the city turned into a huge open-air museum.  Stone citadels, mosques, and tombs are some of its jaw-dropping remains from its glory days. Other attractions include the Khan’s palace, White Mosque, the hidden healing well of Gabdrakhman, a 700-year-old burial chamber for Bolgar nobility, and an interactive bread museum. The city of Bolgar has great religious significance, once the center of Islamic civilization in Europe. Here, you can find the largest printed Kora in the world weighing at 500kg. Bolgar remains a sacred pilgrimage destination to Tatar Muslims. The city of Bolgar is a three hours’ drive from Kazan along the scenic route of the river Volga.

Kazan from a boat

Visit Kazan Russia

Kazan’s river station is flocked to by tourists eager to experience the scenic water route along the city’s shores. Travelling through Kazan with a Volga River boat trip is filled with incredible landscapes and jaw-dropping scenes. Gorgeous views of some of the city’s beloved icons include the Kazan Kremlin, whose structure sparkles like a jewel in the sun in all its Russian glory. The comfortable steam-ships on the rivers and lakes of Russia depart a few times a day to make for regular service (12:00, 15:00, and 19:00 on most days). Two-hour boat trips without stops, with a guided tour along Kazan’s coast. A total of 9 dams choke the river and halt its waters to a standstill- a glistening, magical scene that is a magnet for artists, writers and explorers. By its shores, the Volga river is a favourite for camping, relaxing, fishing, and swimming.

Kazan Cuisine Guide: A Foodie’s Haven

Museum of Chak-Chak

Kazan Travel food guide

The Museum of Chak-Chak (Çäkçäk) is named after the mouth-watering honey-baked balls of doughy goodness, a delicacy served at celebrations and festivities. This museum-turned food establishment is dedicated to traditional Tatar foods and drinks, particularly their national sweet foods. Bashkir dishes, chak-chak, bursak, and kak-tosh made from almonds are some of the recipes derived from Tatar enlightener kayum nasyri. These are only some of the most popular must-try dishes that cannot go unsampled. Here, guests drink tea and sample desserts whilst guides tell stories of the ancient Tatar people’s way of life, tradition and customs. If you want to learn the secret to cooking the perfect Tatar dish, this is the place to be.

Dom Tatarskoi Kulinarii (restaurant)

Kazan Travel food

Dom Tatarskoi Kulinarii, or House of Tatar Cuisine, is one of the oldest national restaurants that has earnt its place in the heart of foodies from across the globe. Its dishes are based on Yunus Akhmetzyanov’s time-tested recipes and traditions – a beloved local guardian of traditional Tatar cuisine. Here you can find confectionary like Tatar sweets, and authentic dishes such as:

  • Echpochmak: These are triangle-shaped pastries stuffed with mince and potatoes. A small hole remains at the top of the stuffed and folded dough. Halfway through the oven baking process, the pastries are filled with a spoonful of broth, ensuring that the meat (stuffed raw) is moist and tender.
  • Gubadiya: Layered pie which contains cottage cheese or quark, minced beef or lamb and boiled egg, which is combined with raisins or mixed dried fruits (such as figs, prunes and apricots). This filling is then covered with melted butter before being baked into a mouthwatering dessert.
  • Kazylyk: Originating from Tatar nomadic culture, this dish is a horse meat sausage which has been traditionally cured by air-drying in the sun and wind. It is often spiced with coriander or cumin, served in thin slices with pickled sliced onions
  • Talkysh kaleve: This intricate dessert involves honey and sugar spun into a stringy fairy-floss which is then moulded into miniature cones and coated with a powder of melted butter and flour
  • Manti: Tatar dumplings made from either spiced lamb, beef or horse meat, which can be mixed with pumpkin or squash depending on the region. They can be boiled or steamed in their own juices, typically served with butter, sour cream, onion sauce or red pepper powder.

In the evenings, your wining and dining with this Bauman street food will be accompanied by live music and the opportunity for master classes about preparing national dishes.

Kazan Travel Guide: Summer Highlights

Months & temperature.

  June, July, August: +24 – +27 C

Summer is by far the most popular and most frequented time of year to trek to Russia’s glorious Kazan city. The bustling, sunny and comfortable seasons of June, July and August are some of the best months to travel here. July is its hottest month at an average of 27 degrees- the perfect time to bask by the mesmerising Volga River.

The Sabantuy Tatar National Festival in June is jam-packed with competitions, sports events, dances, feasts, and music. This holiday hallmarks the end of spring crop planting and draws crowds of up to 40,000 in Kazan’s village of Mirny. Competitions of sportsmanship draw contenders near and far, both amateur and professional, in games like the egg-and-spoon race, sack races, horse races, and wrestling matches. Contenders for the more professional scenes like wrestling can earn prizes varying from home electronics to cars. The wrestling champion is declared ‘Batyr’ and lifts an overweight ram onto his (or her) shoulders for the cheering crowd. This festival is a marvel to behold, especially witnessing it for the very first time.

The Nardugan Pagan Holiday Festival is popular in Kazan as an annual celebration honouring the winter solace. According to the ancient Tatar calendar, the birth of the Sun is December 22. A 21st-century guide to Kazan’s sights

singles lifestyle cruise

Since the Millennium Jubilee Kazan has become a very different city compared to what it used to be. It came out of the celebration of its first millennium as a completely transformed urban center staking its claim as Russia’s third capital after Moscow and St. Petersburg.

Almost all pre-existing sport facilities in Kazan were rebuilt for the World University Games, while 30 new ones were built from scratch including the Water Sports Palace, the Tennis Academy, the Ak Bars Wrestling Palace, the St. Petersburg Volleyball Center, the boat canal on the Middle Kaban Lake and the 45,000-seat Kazan Arena. It is the third-largest stadium in Russia.

Apart from the arrival of new sport facilities, many other changes have taken place. The entire city center has been restored and has seen the construction of a business district, a university campus, a high-speed tram and a metro. Historical monuments have been rehabilitated, while new streets and parking lots have been built. Kazan has also become a bike-friendly city, with a bike rental program featuring Paris bicycles (the first 30 minutes are free). Free Wi-Fi is available in the Metro and throughout the center.

A new railway station and an additional airport terminal have been built to handle the growing inflow of tourists and sportspeople. To go to the airport visitors can take the Lastochka express train, which goes from the center to the terminal in 20 minutes, cutting the journey time in half.

Tatarstan’s capital now stands out as one of Russia’s top urban destinations. Let’s have a look at Kazan’s top seven new sights.

The Kul-Sharif Mosque

The mosque has a capacity of 1,500 and the square in front of it can host up to 10,000 people. The shapes on its dome recall the “Kazan Cap,” which was the Khan’s crown. According to legend it was taken to Moscow after the fall of Kazan and is now located in the Armory Chamber in the Kremlin. Kul-Sharif is not just a religious space, but also hosts two exhibitions: The Museum of Islamic Culture in the Volga Region and the Museum of Ancient Calligraphy.

Temple of All Religions

In 1994 architect Ildar Khanov began construction of the so-called Temple of All Religions on land that he owned. In the eclectic silhouette of this cascade of buildings you can see a combination of Christian crosses, Muslim crescents, stars of David and Chinese domes. The Temple does not function as a place of worship, but features a museum, an art gallery and a concert hall.

Khanov decided to erect this curious building after his travels to Tibet and India where he studied Eastern art, Buddhism, yoga and Tibetan and Chinese medicine. He was helped in the realization of this grandiose project both by local businesspeople and like-minded locals. This humanist and artist passed away in 2013 without having managed to complete the construction of the temple, but funds are being collected to complete it.

To get to the Temple of All Religions take an “elektrichka” (local train) from Kazan and get off at “Staroe Arakchino” station or take bus no. 2 or 45 and get off at “Poselok Staroe Arakchino.”

The Palace of Agriculture

The Palace of Agriculture is impressive for its magnificent simplicity and grandiosity, characteristics typical of Baroque buildings, a style that dominated European art from the end of the 16th to the mid-17th century. You will know you have arrived when you see the fanciful and enormous tree mural in the center of the structure.

Kazan Family Center

One hundred weddings can take place simultaneously in the three halls of the complex. The design imitates the epoch of the Great Volga Bulgars, the Kazan Khanate and even Classicism. There are separate chambers for the bridegroom and the bride, halls for banquets and celebrations and is visited by tourists and prospective families alike.

It is popular for featuring one of the best viewpoints in the city. There is a two-storey viewpoint on the roof at a height of 32 meters (entrance ticket costs 50 rubles or less than one dollar). The landscaped lawns and sky above Kazan provide a wonderful background for a wedding picture or a selfie.

The World University Games facilities

Today innumerable sport facilities are available not only to professional sportspeople, but also to tourists and to local people: Besides watching competitions and using the various facilities, you can just enjoy the latter as urban sights and book an excursion by van or by minibus (from 4,000 to 16,000 rubles for a 4-hour tour).

The Millennium Bridge

The Millennium Bridge is the city’s longest bridge (1,524 metres). It unites the two sides of the Kazanka River. Its opening was the most longed-for event for the city’s and even the republic’s car drivers; moreover, the bridge became an important part of the Kazan’s Small Ring. It instantly became one of the city’s most recognizable symbols. It looks particularly beautiful in the evening, when the additional lighting is turned on and the letter M in the middle of the bridge becomes one of the  most illuminated objects of the city by night.

I've been on more than 20 cruises. Here are the 9 things I never buy on board.

  • After going on more than 20 cruises, I've learned simple ways to save money on ships .
  • I never buy drink packages , spend money on spa products, or splurge at onboard art auctions.
  • If I save money during a trip, I always put it toward my next adventure.

Insider Today

Cruise ships are my happy place.

I've been on more than 20 of them since the '90s, sailing with over five different cruise lines , including Royal Caribbean, Norwegian, Princess, Carnival, and Regent Seven Seas.

I inevitably spend money each time I'm on board, but there are several things I've learned to avoid buying during my voyages. After all, if I save money during a trip , I can put it toward my next adventure.

Here are the activities and items I never splurge on during cruises .

Ships often sell over-the-counter medications, but I can get them for less at my local pharmacy.

singles lifestyle cruise

Most cruise lines sell a selection of over-the-counter medications on board, but you'll probably pay more for them on the ship  than you will at your local pharmacy.

So, I bring my own medicine to treat minor aches and pains, like headaches or scrapes. My must-have items include Advil, Tylenol, Neosporin, and Band-Aids. Antacids, decongestants, and Aleve are also good to bring.

Also, remember to pack any prescription medications in their original packaging. It's important to bring enough to get you through the trip, along with some extra in case you have to extend your stay due to an unforeseen travel obstacle .

Drink packages are convenient, however, I rarely get my money's worth from them.

singles lifestyle cruise

The cost of beverages can add up quickly when you're lounging by a ship's pool, sipping piña coladas, and ordering several rounds.

Unlimited drink packages might make sense for cruisers who don't want to worry about their bar bill. If that's the case, I advise purchasing one prior to embarkation, when there are sometimes better pricing incentives. The moment you step on the ship, prices usually increase.

Before you buy a package, figure out how many beverages you'd need to drink each day in order to get your money's worth. Often, it doesn't even out, especially if you're off the ship exploring during port days.

I refuse to buy lanyards on the ships.

singles lifestyle cruise

Many cruise lines give travelers a credit-card-sized room key that doubles as an onboard charge card.

I keep mine in a lanyard around my neck so I don't have to worry about where I should put it as I wander around the ship.

I purchased a pack of five lanyards from Amazon for $10. On a recent cruise, I saw a staff member selling similar individual ones for about the same price.

Ships' art auctions can be entertaining, but I usually don't buy pieces without conducting proper research.

singles lifestyle cruise

I love art and used to enjoy going to art auctions on the ships. I even bought some pieces way back when. But now, I admire the pieces on display and only purchase one if it really speaks to me.

Although I've heard some art-selling auctioneers say the works they're selling are an investment, some have also been accused  of misrepresenting the value of their wares .

I usually don't have a strong enough Wi-Fi connection to look into the artists and get a fair appraisal before buying a piece, and I don't want to spend hours of my trip trying to find one.

Buy the art if you love it and are happy with the price, but don't do it to try to fatten your pockets.

Instead of spending money on a water package, I bring my own reusable bottles.

singles lifestyle cruise

It's important to stay hydrated when you're traveling. A lot of people are used to having water with them at all times thanks to popular water bottles like Hydro Flasks and Stanley cups.

Some cruise lines offer water packages, where you can order multiple bottles for a fixed price. I recommend saving some cash by bringing your own water bottle and refilling it at the ships' dining venues and poolside buffets.

Photos are a lovely way to capture memories, but I don't feel the need to pay for an entire package.

singles lifestyle cruise

It's tempting to document every step I take on my voyages.

Everywhere I look on cruise ships, I see photographers ready to snap my photo, whether I'm eating dinner in the main dining room or disembarking at a port . The ship staff also sometimes sets up photo backdrops in the evenings.

I've noticed that these photos are often the same size, typically 8 inches by 10 inches, and expensive.

If you love photos, a package may be worth it, but purchase it prior to embarkation  when you have a chance to find a better deal.

Alternatively, you can snap your own pictures and invest in one or two professional photos on the ship instead of buying an entire package.

I prefer to get manicures and pedicures before embarkation rather than during my cruise.

singles lifestyle cruise

Most ships I've been on have salons on board. While it might seem nice to indulge in a manicure or pedicure, I don't want to  miss  out on cruise activities or experiences.

Plus, I've found many onboard salons charge double or triple as much as the ones at home.

I never buy the products sold in cruise spas.

singles lifestyle cruise

If you want a massage to help you relax during your time away, go for it. You might even be able to score better deals than what's listed on the menu if you attend a spa open house or book a treatment when the ship is in port.

Just be prepared for the spa staff to try to upsell you products during or after your treatment. I've found that a lot of these items are marked up, and I've always been able to find them for lower prices at home.

I wait to buy jewelry and watches until I'm off the ship.

singles lifestyle cruise

Buy a piece of jewelry or a watch if you love it. However, I've found that prices are often much higher on ships, even if the onboard stores selling them advertise special deals.

If you're going to buy expensive jewelry, do your research and ensure the items' quality meets your expectations.
