Rihanna has released a never-before-seen video highlighting her educational trip to Malawi, a country where half the population lives in poverty and only eight percent of students complete secondary school.
The pop superstar visited the southeast African nation in January to meet with its state of education. “I’m really here to see it. It’s one thing to read statistics, but I want to see it firsthand and find out all that can be done and where to start first,” Rihanna says in the video, sitting alongside former Prime Minister of Australia Julia Gillard, a board chair for the Global Partnership for Education (GPE); Hon. Dr. Emmanuel Fabiano, Minister of Education, Science and Technology, in Malawi; and Hugh Evans, the co-founder and CEO of Global Citizen .

The Global Partnership for Education works with more than 60 developing countries to ensure that every child receives a quality education, prioritizing the poorest, most vulnerable and those affected by war. Rihanna formed a partnership with GPE and social advocacy platform Global Citizen in 2016.

The Barbados-born singer, whose full name is Robyn Rihanna Fenty, is an ambassador for GPE and the founder of Clara Lionel Foundation , whose mandate is “teachers and students, advocates and allies, reaching across borders to fight together for the basic right to education.” The nine-minute video is being shown and discussed in Ottawa tonight at Fairmont Château Laurier for Global Citizen Unplugged, an event to call for Canada to support education on the fringes of the GPE board meeting. Rihanna will not be in attendance.
According to the eight million membership Global Citizen, which believes global poverty can be eradicated by 2030, “despite encouraging progress made since 2000, 263 million children and adolescents are out of school, including 130 million girls who are still more likely than boys to never enroll in school.”
Rihanna is encouraging her fans to support her and other GPE members to help raise the $3.1 billion from donors around the world, including from the major economies that comprise the G20 countries. These funds could help more than 870 million children in 89 countries receive quality education between 2018 and 2020. In the Malawi video, Rihanna talks with government officials, educators and even teaches a classroom full of kids mathematics. She is told by the Minister that many kids drop out of school because of poverty.

“It’s such a pity that they have to drop out because they are so smart,” Rihanna reflects. “And everybody is learning together and learning at the same pace it seems. It’s sad that has to end for some of them because they could probably do so much if they had the resources to continue and complete.”
One boy talks about often not having food but he doesn’t worry because “I believe in the future when I will be a businessman I will have more food.” He later says “this is a beautiful school with beautiful learners” but there is a lack of chalk and books.
Rihanna helps one child do some addition on the chalkboard, sweetly using her fingers as an aid, and then teaches the entire class, who shout back answers to her. She also plays soccer with the students and leads the girls in an empowering “girls, girls, girls” chant. Many girls are married off at a very young age.
“Its amazing,” Rihanna says. “The way they learn though, I love that they learn in melody. That’s like my favorite thing because kids, they adopt melody really, really quickly and so if you can use that as a learning tool, I think that’s the most brilliant brilliant thing.”
10 Years After 'Good Girl Gone Bad,' Rihanna Has Surpassed Her Goal of Becoming the 'Black Madonna'
At the end of the video is the call to action to encourage world leaders to increase education funding to the Global Partnership and help provide that education to millions starting in 2018. The web site is provided.
Rihanna’s influence does work. According to Global Citizen, the Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his office were “inundated with demands to commit to the Education Cannot Wait Fund” after the singer put word out on her social media accounts. “Just three weeks after Rihanna’s rallying cry on Twitter urging Global Citizens to call up PM Trudeau to make a change, which prompted 185,000 actions, a US$15.3 million commitment was made at the Global Citizen Festival on Sept. 24 by the Canadian government to grant over 98,000 children and youth all over the world desperately needed access to education in emergencies,” according to the press materials.
She made the same plea to the French government, which committed $2 million to the fund. Watch the video below.

Rihanna Visits Malawi for Global Humanitarian Program
It's no secret that Rihanna has a heart of gold. She has been honored numerous times for her outstanding humanitarian work, but for a recent trip to the southeastern African country of Malawi, she decided to keep her presence on the down low, until now.
In January, the pop star visited Malawi not as a celebrity, but as the founder of the Clara Lionel Foundation and global ambassador for the Global Partnership for Education , to teach impoverished elementary-school children math in their classrooms (as well as to teach some simple reading exercises and to hang around the playground). Living in one of the poorest countries in the world — one teacher is often responsible for supervising about 100 children — a very small percentage of students in Malawi are fortunate enough to complete secondary school without being forced to drop out due to poverty, Rihanna's organization explains in a video that documented the trip.
"It's such a pity that they have to drop out, because they are so smart," Rihanna says in the video. "Everybody's learning together and learning at the same pace it seems. It's sad that has to end for some of them, because they could probably do so much if they had the resources to continue and complete." The experience of her being there was also enhanced by the unique musical tricks she witnessed the students using. "I love that they learn in melody, that's like my favorite thing," she continued. "Because kids, they adopt melody really, really quickly. And so if you can use that as a learning tool, I think that's the most brilliant, brilliant thing."
The main goal of Rihanna's trip was to persuade world leaders to commit $3.1 billion to the Global Partnership for Education, so that the organization could continue to embark on their fulfilling programs around the world. On Instagram, she reflected on her trip when news of it broke: "My time in Malawi was so inspiring! Working with my @ClaraLionelFdn to improve the lives of students globally, alongside @GPforEducation."

Watch Rihanna Teach Math in a Malawi Classroom
I n January, music’s reigning icon Rihanna visited a school in Malawi to learn about the educational challenges facing students there. Besides singing some of the most popular music on the planet, Rihanna is also an avowed humanitarian and the founder of the Clara Lionel Foundation , which has partnered with Global Citizen and the Global Partnership for Education to advocate for improving access to education for some of the world’s poorest students.
During her visit to Malawi, Rihanna took a turn at the blackboard teaching math, reading with kids, and leading chants on the playground. A small percentage of students in Malawi manage to complete secondary school, according to Rihanna’s organization.
“It’s such a pity that they have to drop out, because they are so smart,” she says in the video shared by Global Citizen. “Everybody’s learning together, and learning at the same pace it seems. It’s sad that has to end for some of them, because they could probably do so much if they had the resources to continue and complete.”
The experience was well-suited to the pop star’s skill set.
“I love that they learn in melody, that’s like my favorite thing,” Rihanna notes about her experience in the classrooms. “Because kids, they adopt melody really, really quickly. And so if you can use that as a learning tool, I think that’s the most brilliant, brilliant thing.”
The goal of Rihanna’s visit was to help convince world leaders to commit $3.1 billion to funding the Global Partnership for Education, which works with education ministries in 89 countries to help them improve the quality of schooling for as many as 800 million children, according to the Global Citizen website.

Rihanna looks to help, educate and inspire children in Malawi
The entertainer spent time in the southeast African nation in efforts to gain a better understanding of the country’s problems
Up Next From The Uplift
Of all Rihanna has achieved throughout her career , nothing seems to be more important to the pop star than helping others in need.
In the most recent string of philanthropic efforts that has the internet buzzing, a mini-doc released this week shows Rihanna, a global ambassador for the Global Partnership for Education (GPE) and founder of the Clara Lionel Foundation , visiting with schoolchildren at the Muzu primary school during a trip to the southeast African country of Malawi in January.
In the 10-minute video, Rihanna sits alongside Malawi’s minister of education, science and technology, Emmanuel Fabiano, former Australian prime minister and GPE board chairwoman Julia Gillard and Global Citizen co-founder Hugh Evans to discuss education, poverty, health, safety and other looming issues that are hindering progress in the country.
“I’m really here to see it,” Rihanna said. “It’s one thing to read statistics, but I want to see it firsthand and find out all that can be done and where to start first.”
According to 2014 statistics provided by the Education Policy Data Center, 57 percent of youths ages 15-24 had not completed primary education, and only 7 percent completed secondary education. In the video, a teacher explains that some classrooms may have a student-teacher ratio of 100-1, which makes it harder for students to learn and concentrate and often leads to them dropping out. Outside of crowded classrooms, poverty is an even bigger factor.
“It’s such a pity that they have to drop out because they are so smart, and everybody is learning together and learning at the same pace it seems,” Rihanna said. “It’s sad that that has to end for some of them, because they could probably do so much if they had the resources to continue and complete.”
Rihanna spent time with educators, students, parents and officials at Muzu who are diligently working to better conditions and build a brighter future for its children.
But all wasn’t sad. Many of the children remained upbeat and hopeful. Besides learning about the struggles of the Malawian people, Rihanna witnessed the children being educated through song and dance. She even joined the fun by helping them solve math problems, playing rugby and even empowering a group of female students as they proudly proclaimed that “girls rule” in the schoolyard.
“It’s amazing, the way they learn, though,” Rihanna said. “I love that they learn in melody. That’s my favorite thing, because kids, they adopt melody really, really quickly. And so if you can use that as a learning tool, I think that’s the most brilliant, brilliant thing.”

Rihanna Teaching Math and Singing with Students in Malawi Will Warm Your Heart
The pop star releases a documentary on her visit earlier this year.
In January, Rihanna visited a school in Malawi to empower students and teachers, and learn about the struggles of their local education system. As an ambassador for the Global Partnership for Education and founder of the Clara Lionel Foundation, the singer stopped by the Muzu primary school, where she taught math, played rugby and sang along with children. Six months later, Global Citizen is releasing a short documentary on RiRi's impactful visit.
The film, which runs just under 10 minutes, shows how the singer's mission trip came to be. Her Clara Lionel organization and the GPE teamed up to advocate for better education for children in developing countries. The footage shows her initially meeting with Hon. Dr. Emmanuel Fabiano, Malawi's Minister of Education, and Julia Gillard, former Prime Minister of Australia.
"I'm really here to see it," Rihanna told them. "It's one thing to read statistics, but I want to see it firsthand, and find out all that can be done and where to start first."
In one meeting, she was told that often, the class ratio is one teacher to over 100 students, which makes it hard to monitor how each individual is learning. As a result, kids tend to drop out because of lack of attention and poverty.
"It's such a pity that they have to drop out because they're so smart," Rih told one educator. "And everybody is learning together and learning at the same pace, it seems. It's sad that that has to end for some of them because they could probably do so much if they had the resources to continue and complete."
The video goes on to show BadGal RiRi stepping in as a teacher in a basic math class and helping students solve problems on the board. Another scene shows her and a group of female pupils during recess chanting "Girls rule!" In other moments, she's seen singing along with the class.
"I love that they learn in melody," she said, reflecting on the students' songs. "That's like my favorite thing because kids, they adopt melody really, really quickly. And so if you can use that as a learning tool, I think that's the most brilliant, brilliant thing."

Rihanna is not afraid of a challenge, and she’s especially not afraid of an educational challenge.
In January, Rihanna took a personal learning journey to Malawi, one of the world’s poorest countries. Her goal for the trip was to better understand the problems facing children when they try to complete their education and to see the problems firsthand in order to find out what can be done to help, according to the artist .
As the newly appointed Global Ambassador for the Global Partnership for Education , Rihanna traveled to two schools in Malawi with former Australian Prime Minister and current GPE Chairperson, Julia Gillard, as well as with Global Citizen CEO Hugh Evans and her organization, the Clara Lionel Foundation .
Take Action: All Children Around The World Deserve to Go to School
The group visited Muzu Primary School and Lilongwe Secondary Girls School outside the country’s capital, Lilongwe. Both school visits highlighted a range of issues that stand in the way of students’ educational success.
Overcrowded classrooms, hunger, and a lack of literal school buildings for students, especially girls, in rural Malawi became vividly apparent during the trip through talks with experts, teachers, and students outside Lilongwe.
Many students in the world deal with similar challenges. But when 50% of a population lives in poverty, one seemingly small obstacle can become a mountainous challenge. That’s the case of education in Malawi.
In fact, a staggering 92% of students do not complete secondary school, according to Angeline Murimirwa, the regional executive director of Camfed , a nonprofit dedicated to girls’ education in Malawi.
Despite challenges, the students Rihanna met expressed an acute awareness about the importance of education and the challenges that poverty forces upon them when it comes to completing school.

Surprisingly, the challenges facing students in Malawi were best explained by Wungani Nyirenda, a bright and intelligent 14-year-old who aspires to be a businessman.
“Muzu is a beautiful school, but also there are some problems,” Nyirenda told Global Citizen , explaining what he must overcome to achieve his professional dreams.
“We don’t take food to eat to school, although sometimes we don’t eat because of lack of food at home,” Nyirenda said .
In Malawi, the average person lives on 90 cents a day. Because of the high rates of extreme poverty, access to food and hunger are prominent throughout the country. These were some of the first challenges Nyirenda mentioned when talking about obstacles to learning in Malawi.
Last year, 2.8 million of Malawi’s 17 million residents were faced with extreme hunger when El Nino’s changed weather patterns caused of one of the worst food shortages in decades. The country declared a state of emergency. And the high cost of food forced Malawians to spend as much as 50-70% of their income on food.
But students like Nyirenda remain positive about their future in the face of hunger.
“I don’t worry that I don’t eat in the morning because I believe in the future when I will be a businessman, I will have more food,” he said .
Crowded Classrooms
“A classroom with 100 students may not be easily controlled by one teacher,” a community member said in a listening session during Rihanna’s trip to Muzu Primary School.
The average class size in Malawi is 90 students , and Muzu Primary School is no exception. At Muzu, students can end up dropping out of school because of overcrowding. Teachers are not able to monitor a student’s progress in large classrooms, and so students end up dropping out, concerned community members told Rihanna, Gillard, and Evans .
Lack of Infrastructure and Resources
“You see some classes learning under the tree,” Nyirenda said. “This is very dangerous according to the weather in the rainy season.”
In the face of poverty, building adequate infrastructure for schools like Muzu Primary School is tough. The buildings erected were added on at different times by different organizations, and students still learn outside during the rainy season in some cases, another community member told the group at Muzu Primary School.
“This is a beautiful school. There are good teachers, good students, but there’s some lack of blocks, lack of chalk, lack of books,” Nyirenda said.

Infrastructure also poses a significant block for girls’ education, according to Tamara Tsambalikagwa, National Chair of the Camfed Association in Malawi. She said that if more schools were built, and distance was not such an obstacle to getting an education, more girls could attend school.
In 2009, 45% of girls completed secondary education in Malawi compared to 53% of boys. A student might face a travel distance of nine miles one-way to get to school, Tsambalikagwa said. But more schools in rural areas could help get more students to stay in school. Less distance between school and home could also help girls with attendance because they “face more dangers” on the road according to Tsambalikagwa.
In addition to lack of infrastructure, teachers are also missing. Malawi has one of the greatest teacher shortages in the world, according to a 2014 United Nations Education, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) report .
Child Marriage
Child marriages are commonplace in Malawi. The country has one of the highest rates of child marriage in the world. More than half of girls in Malawi are married before 18. And poor uneducated girls in rural regions of Malawi are twice as likely to be married early compared to girls in urban areas, according to the United Nations Population Fund .
“It’s not good for parents to arrange marriage for their children because parents may choose someone who has HIV/AIDS without getting that person tested,” a student at Lilongwe Secondary Girls School said .
Fortunately, Malawi took huge steps this year by raising the age of marriage from 15 to 18. Now, parents who consent to early marriage can face up to five years in prison and a fine of $143 , a large amount in the eighth poorest country in the world . This steep fine sends a strong message that education is more important than marriage. Hopefully, this new law will be catalyst for cultural shift to place more value in education than marriage for young girls and boys.

Despite these challenges, there is hope for improved education in Malawi. Between 2006 and 2009, both literacy and school enrollment rates increased by 10%, according to the United Nations Development Programme .
Each day, students and teachers are rising above challenging circumstances through creative alternatives to sitting inside classrooms. At Muzu Primary School teachers use interactive songs, sports, and dance.
“I love that they learn in melody,” Rihanna said. “Because kids, they learn melody really, really quickly, and so if you can adopt that as a learning tool, I think that’s the most brilliant thing.”
Hope can be seen in the eager faces of the students playing under the trees at Muzu, or the conviction with which girls who attend Lilongwe Girls Secondary School speak when they stand up and condemn child marriage.

Rihanna Sees Firsthand the Challenges Students in Malawi Face
June 8, 2017
“It’s one thing to read statistics, but I want to see it firsthand, and find out all that can be done, and where to start first.”
With this spirit, GPE Global Ambassador Rihanna joined Julia Gillard, GPE board chair, and Hugh Evans, Global Citizen CEO, in Malawi in early 2017 to meet the people behind the statistics.
This trip was borne out of the partnership , announced in September 2016, between GPE, Rihanna’s C lara Lionel Foundation , and Global Citizen. It was an opportunity to spend time with President Mutharika and the Minister of Education, development partners, educators, mentors, and students who are working collaboratively to build a better future for the next generation of Malawians.
So, what did Rihanna experience? Malawi, one of the poorest countries in the world, joined GPE in 2009 and has demonstrated a commitment to education as key to achieving its development goals.
In fact, Malawi adopted a law in 1994 for free universal education, well before the Millennium Development Goals called for universal access to primary school in 2000. However, the unprecedented influx of children into schools created challenges that are still being dealt with today: particularly overcrowding, drop-outs, and lack of resources.
Girls are particularly disadvantaged in Malawi, facing barriers such as long distances to school, lack of adequate sanitation facilities, and a high rate of child marriage.
In fact, only 29% of girls who start primary school in Malawi finish, and the vast majority drop out between grades 6 and 8.
Guided by the Minister of Education. Science, and Technology, Dr. Emmanuel Fabiano (a former teacher himself) Rihanna came face to face with these challenges throughout her visit.
Rihanna visits two primary schools
Muzu and Mpingu primary schools, in the Lilongwe Rural West district, have more than 3,500 and 2,000 students in grades 1-8 respectively. There are not enough teachers which leads to overcrowded classrooms. There also aren’t enough classrooms so most students in grades 3-5 at Muzu learn outside – literally under a tree.
Why grades 3-5? Because educators want the younger children in grades 1-2 to stay encouraged and like coming to school, so they have class inside; and the older students need to be able to concentrate and prepare for their end of school exams and secondary school, so they also have the “luxury” of studying inside a classroom.
At Muzu, Rihanna sat down with 8 th grader Wungani, who told her of his dreams of becoming a businessman and doesn’t worry about coming to school hungry every day because he knows that once he is successful, he won’t be hungry anymore. He even wrote her a song!
Teachers like Ms. Makuwira and her assistant at Mpingu, have to teach more than 120 first graders every day. They sit on the floor because there’s no room for them and bring bottle caps from home to use as aids for counting exercises in math class.
Rihanna joined Ms. Makuwira’s class at Mpingu, did math with the children and sang “ Pamchenga ” a popular Chichewa song all Malawians are taught to learn letters. Roughly translated, children sing, “I enjoy writing letters in the sand…A, E, I, O, U”.
It is challenging for teachers to keep track of so many students, knowing their names, paying attention to those who struggle. The teachers do the best they can, but as a Muzu parent pointed out, “A class with 100 students can’t be easily controlled by one teacher, and it is difficult to watch children do well in that particular class. The end result is that they drop out.”
During her visit, Rihanna also met Tamara and Elizabeth, two girls who had to drop out of school to help support their families but were able to return. Even when she wasn’t attending classes, Elizabeth would continue to go to her secondary school and teach girls about sexual and reproductive health. She wanted to help her peers further their own education, even if she couldn’t continue her own.
“GPE’s support to Malawi is vital”

Both Muzu and Mpingu are in one of the eight most disadvantaged districts in the country. The very districts GPE is supporting with a US$44.9 million grant , to help the government address some of the main challenges facing the education system.
An earlier grant of US$90 million helped to strengthen the education system, build more than 2,900 classrooms, train more than 23,000 teachers, buy and distribute 26 million textbooks, and provide financial support to more than 80,000students, 94% of which are still in school.
In the words of GPE Champion President Mutharika:
“Educating the next generation is the best investment we can make in our future prosperity. The Global Partnership for Education’s support to Malawi is vital. GPE’s focus on strengthening the education system helps to improve the effectiveness of my government’s investments in education.”
A champion for global education

Malawi has demonstrated its commitment to education not only by pioneering universal education, but also by consistently increasing its domestic financing for the sector. But despite the government’s best intentions it shows why a significant increase in external financing is needed to tackle the education crisis in Malawi and inmany other countries that are in a similar situation.
If the world answers ours call to invest US$3.1 billion in GPE between 2018 and 2020, we could support 89 countries’ efforts to improve quality and access to education for 870 million children. GPE is thrilled to be able to count on Rihanna and Global Citizen’s support to achieve this goal.

This Documentary of Rihanna’s Trip to Malawi will Inspire You
In January 2017, Rihanna ‘s Clara Lionel Foundation, Global Citizen, and the Global Partnership for Education visited Malawi in Africa . The aim of the visit was to advocate for strong education systems that ensure the world’s poorest kids can get a quality education.
Rihanna’s visit to the Muzu primary school back in January was documented in a video.
During her visit, Rihanna taught the kids mathematics and she also helped to highlight the education system in the country.
Rihanna is asking her fans to help try and raise $3.1 billion to bring education to over 870 million children in 89 countries between 2018 and 2020.

Rihanna’s Charity Work: Fighting Poverty in Malawi
During her stay, Rihanna, accompanied by former Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard, hoped to learn more about the challenges regarding health and education in Malawi. Global Citizen uploaded a short film documenting Rihanna’s charity work. The film depicts the poverty , hunger, poor education and the lack of many basic human rights that many children face in Malawi. In addition to interacting with children, Rihanna also discussed future improvement strategies with key political leaders.
The situation regarding education in Malawi requires immediate action. This documentary and Rihanna’s charity work helped bring attention to the severity of conditions in Malawi. According to a World Bank survey, one in two Malawians live in poverty, making it the country’s most pressing issue.
Currently, the fight against poverty in Malawi has experienced little progress in the past decade. Like many impoverished countries, the rural regions of Malawi are the most heavily impacted. The issue is primarily due to volatile economic conditions, natural disasters and poor performance in the agricultural sector. The World Bank has suggested that one possible solution could be investing in secondary education for women.
These issues regarding poverty and education have a particularly profound impact on young Malawian women. Rihanna’s charity work, as shown in the documentary, addresses how issues such as poor public infrastructure put young women in danger while walking to school. In addition, cultural practices such as arranged marriages deter women from pursuing education.
Rihanna’s charity work in Malawi attempts to increase global awareness of these issues while creating connections with key leaders. The Global Partnership for Education has raised funds for global education, and in past years has focused specifically on “inclusive, equitable quality education for all by 2030.” In fact, the organization hopes to raise $3.1 billion for over 870 million children in 89 countries between 2018 and 2020. Partnering with Rihanna allowed them to combine these goals with the singer’s interest in education for girls and arts education.
In years past, Rihanna has used her fame to further her charity work . As a champion for women’s rights and access to arts and education, Rihanna established the Clara Lionel Foundation in 2012. The nonprofit fights to “improve the quality of life for communities globally in the areas of health, education, arts and culture.” The foundation creates scholarships, partners with various corporations, holds fundraising events and does much more in an effort to provide these areas with the resources they need.

Rihanna displayed her Global Ambassador for Education duties when she paid a visit to Malawi to meet with educators, government officials, and schoolchildren to promote access to education for children, TMZ reports.
Keke Palmer Is Tired Of People Comparing Her To Rihanna
The Bajan superstar’s eighth album, Anti, founds its way to the fifth spot on Billboard ‘s best albums of 2016, and her venture into the fashion world has mimicked her musical success with her Puma clothing line. This new year finds RiRi achieving success on a whole new level when she made her way to Malawi, Africa as part of her ambassador role, alongside her Clara Lionel Foundation’s collaboration with the Global Partnership for Education and the Global Citizens.
The partnership focuses on the promotion of access to education for children across the globe. The award-winning artist’s venture was announced in September of last year, and now we see Rihanna making her way around the globe on her mission to further education.
The Meme of Rihanna’s Hair Being Touched By Sarah Paulson Is Gold
The “Work” singer gave a statement about the program in September where she said, “Working together, I know we can amplify our efforts and ensure that millions of children gain access to education globally.” In the pictures distributed by TMZ we can see Rihanna with Global Citizen CEO Hugh Evans and Julia Gillard, chair of GPE’s board of directors.

International star Rihanna spotted in Malawi
Barbados born musician Rihanna could not miss the camera lens earlier today as she was captured at a secondary school in Malawi’s capital, Lilongwe.
As a matter of surprise, the songstress secretly made the Malawi journey but not for a music performance. She visited Lilongwe girls secondary school as an advocate for education.
The Umbrella star came in her capacity as an ambassador of Global Partnership for Education.
Global Ambassador for Education @rihanna was photographed at a school in Malawi, Africa today. 👏 @ClaraLionelFdn @GPforEducation pic.twitter.com/mwRFuPW8xu — RihannaDaily.com (@RihannaDaily) January 27, 2017
Her role is to encourage world leaders and policy makers to boost their support for global education.
In this regard she also campaigns to ensure that boys and girls in world’s poorest nations get quality education.
Wearing a white top and grey pair of trousers with her feet hidden in black boots, Rihanna had to take off her sunglasses for students to believe it was really a star they have been seeing on Television all along. On the other hand she shamed girls who look at her as a mentor when it comes to promoting nudity.
Rihanna’s surprise visit comes a few days after American pop star, Madonna, appeared in a local court. However Journalists were barred from neither taking pictures of Madonna.
Facts on reasons behind the secret visits remain sketchy which leaves Malawians with many unanswered questions.

At the start of the year, Rihanna was part of a delegation representing Clara Lionel Foundation, Global Citizen and the Global Partnership for Education which set out on a journey to Malawi. The pictures which made their way to social media were well received and the disdain normally associated with Western humanitarian efforts in Africa was seemingly absent.
We are now presented with footage which better explains the efforts in Malawi and shows some of the experiences from the trip. The short video lets us in on some of the problems caused by poverty and viewers are given a first person perspective of the challenges many experience.
It’s particularly interesting to see that in Malawi, indigenous languages are employed in school, a move Nigeria is set to take in the near future. The video is inspirational in some regard as it shows the perseverance and hope for the future that the students exude.

A first-time guide to Malawi
Sep 3, 2024 • 5 min read
Plan a trip to the small southeast African country of Malawi with this guide for first-time visitors. Robin Bruyns/Shutterstock
Malawi ’s tagline is "the warm heart of Africa," and while this sounds like a cliché it also rings true: the welcome you receive in this small southeast African country is as much a part of the experience as sundowner Malawi gins on the beach or the heartstopping sight of huge elephant herds and watchful cheetahs.
The country is a wonderful destination for lovers of the outdoors. Vast Lake Malawi is alive with a colorful abundance of little cichlid fish, lofty Mulanje lures hikers up its wooded slopes and the sweeping national parks have seen a heartening wildlife resurgence.
When should I go to Malawi?
Most visitors travel to Malawi between May and September , when the weather is generally temperate. In October the heat can get intense, but it’s a lovely time to see wildflowers on the high and cool Nyika Plateau . The "emerald season" in April sees Malawi at its greenest after heavy rains, though bear in mind that denser foliage may impede your wildlife-viewing opportunities. During the rains from (roughly) November to March roads can become blocked and deluges may impact your plans. An upside can be the lack of fellow visitors, giving a more authentic experience of Malawian life.
Music lovers should focus their visit around September’s Lake of Stars music festival , a long-running lakeside celebration of local and international sounds. Around the same time look out for the Sand Music Festival and the new and multi-disciplinary Cape Maclear Carnival , while the Tumaini Festival in November features the outstanding talents of the residents of Dzaleka Refugee Camp .
How much time should I spend in Malawi?
To travel the country from top to toe, give yourself a month to explore. Travelers who are focusing their travels around Lake of Stars should make time for at least two other destinations: a week can give you a tempting flavor of the country. Combine the festival with a visit to Liwonde National Park , where there are guaranteed sightings of roaming elephants and wallowing hippos, then head up the high escarpment at Livingstonia, where affordable and funky Mushroom Lodge represents ethical travel at its most enjoyable.
Is it easy to get in and around Malawi?
Travelers to Malawi arrive at the airport in Lilongwe or Blantyre (the Lilongwe plane drops off passengers and continues to Blantyre).
A fairly reliable coach network connects the main urban centers , while minibuses are not recommended – they only depart when they are full (which can take literally hours), and the sardine-can experience combined with wild driving makes for an uncomfortable experience.
The antique MV Ilala ferry plies up the lake linking its major settlements, and is a wonderfully scenic way to travel without the stress of driving. You’ll need to study the timetable to figure out your lake shore schedule and accommodation bookings, whilst taking it with somewhat of a pinch of salt, as delays are common.
Top things to do in Malawi
Away from the upmarket safari lodges, Malawi has some fantastically earthy accommodation options. Lakeside Cape Maclear is a great place to sample local life: at affordable lodges such as beachfront Warm Heart with its simple but attractive thatched huts you’ll swim alongside fisher folk. Take a boat trip to Thumbi Island to snorkel with brightly colored fish and watch eagles dive, then kayak along the lake shore as the sun begins to set. Simple local restaurants offer variations on chambo (fish) and chips, and at central Hiccups bar you can down a beer or two and have a dance.
My favorite thing to do in Malawi
Arriving in Lilongwe I always make a beeline for the Lilongwe Wildlife Centre , a miraculous stretch of riverine nature near the heart of the capital. It’s a refuge for rescued, orphaned and injured wild animals, whose progress you can chart on the Trust’s heart-melting insta feed . A raised boardwalk made from recycled plastic leads you through the trees and away from the crocs which have been known to meander the paths here – a reminder that this is a truly wild city. A good cafe and an excellent craft stall round off a top-notch visitor experience.
How much money do I need for Malawi?
While you can go as high-end as you like, mid-range lodges and hotels offer excellent value for money, and eating out is affordable. The country’s beautiful crafts, from basketry to clothes made from bright chitenje fabric, are very reasonable for the quality.
When it comes to safaris , Malawi offers great bang for your buck in contrast with neighboring countries. Parks like Liwonde feature affordable camping options as well as great locally owned lodges within or near the park boundary. Park entry fees are also reasonable compared to other African countries. Here's a guide to local prices in USD.
- Beachside thatched lodge: $30–90+ per night
- Coach ticket Lilongwe–Blantyre: $6
- All-inclusive luxury safari lodge stay: $400+
- Tailor-made suit: $15
- Samosa snack: $1
- Dinner for two: $25
- Heineken "green" beer at the bar: $2
How do I pay for things?
Be ready to flash your cash in Malawi – many smaller places and cafes don’t take credit cards. Bring some dollars to exchange at the airport, just in case the ATMs aren’t functioning. Larger hotels and restaurants take dollars; otherwise you pay in the local currency, the kwacha.
Can I drink the water?
Unfortunately Malawi’s tap water isn’t drinkable . Instead of buying bottled water, invest in a filter water bottle that you can carry with you and top up as you go: these get rid of impurities and render the tap water safe.
