Description.
Experience the magic of GPS audio walks, cycles, drives and even boat rides with VoiceMap tours in over 350 destinations worldwide. They’re like podcasts that move with you, to tell stories about what you’re seeing right now. VoiceMap’s tours are produced by insightful local storytellers, including journalists, filmmakers, novelists, podcasters, and tour guides. Sir Ian McKellen has even created a tour. It's around London's West End, where he’s performed for over 50 years. Features: • Explore at your own pace. Start and stop tours whenever you like, then use the resume option to pick up exactly where you left off. • With GPS autoplay, you can focus on your surroundings, not the screen. Tap on Start, and let VoiceMap guide you. • VoiceMap works offline. After you download a tour, the audio will be available offline along with an offline map. • If you do go off in the wrong direction, VoiceMap plays an audio alert, and you can follow the map on your screen to the next location. • Listen to tours as many times as you like both in the destination and in virtual tour mode at home. • With over 1,200 free and paid tours, VoiceMap offers huge variety Reviews and Testimonials: “High-quality self-guided walking tours...Narrated by local experts, they provide insight into corners of the city sometimes overlooked by regular guided tours.” Lonely Planet “We may be biased, but could there be anything more helpful than having a journalist in your pocket when touring a new city? How about a historian, a novelist or just a really passionate local? VoiceMap culls city-specific stories from them all and fits them neatly into walking tours.” New York Times “My wife and I really enjoyed exploring Bruges at our own pace with this audio tour, and there were some memorable stories that the narrator shared. Also, the app worked great in relation to the location-based services. We easily followed the map and the audio was triggered in the appropriate spots. In comparison to the packs of people wandering the city with tour guides, this was a much better fit for us.” Viator review, Rick A “Brilliant. Can go at your own pace, good information and took us to places we would never have found ourselves.” Tripadvisor review, Ravin D “It was enjoyable to be under no time pressure to freely roam the city of Pisa as we so pleased. Wandering from attraction to attraction. The app is clever, concise and easy to use! Would do again - especially with another person or solo traveler.” GetYourGuide review, Grace L “Great quality information - interesting and entertaining. The time flew by. And no waffle! This is far better than any other guided tour we found - they are much more expensive and far less informative. And you can do this tour any time, any day, at your own pace, and even do it twice!” Tripadvisor review, Carcassonne 's Medieval Walls: A Self-Guided Tour “Great value for money, interesting and very clear and easy to follow! I learnt lots about London I didn't already know and I have lived here over 30 years.” London’s Alternative History Tour, Carmella V. “I loved the tour, bought all of the New Orleans ones you had and have already recommended it to two people. I will without a doubt continue to use the app.” Faith & Courage: Metairie Cemetery Stories, Jeremy L “Loved this! Real eye opener for me as a new resident of Singapore who thought this only an island of foodies and engineers. LOL! Please produce more soon!” Artoholic Singapore, Craig DeLarge ** Just so you know, GPS runs in the background while you're on a tour. This decreases battery life and it's best to start a tour with your device fully charged.
Version 12.0.0
We’re calling Version 12 of the VoiceMap app “Rome” because we developed it to solve the problem of visiting the Vatican Museums. This treasure trove, collected by one pope after the other, for centuries, has 54 galleries linking 1,400 rooms with 20,000 items on display. It’s a lot to take in over a single afternoon. Then, at the end, when you’ve been overwhelmed into a tired, footsore resignation, you arrive at the crowning masterpiece: Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel. Our solution combines inspiring, insightful content that extends your attention span with a new interface for indoor tours that helps you make informed choices about how you spend your time and energy. Here’s what you’ll find: • Locations are grouped into digestible sections, like chapters breaking up a book. Each section has a total audio time and labels like “Essential” and “Optional” to help you decide what to see. • Clear navigation along a suggested route with text directions that slide in when you need them followed by a photo of where you need to be next. • Tap “I’m Here” when you’re ready – or don’t, and choose “Skip Location” instead to get directions to the next point on your route. • There’s also a "Dig Deeper" button for locations that go beyond the basics, letting you pick what interests you most. • From start to finish, you’ll see your progress through the tour as a whole on a bar at the top of the screen. • Just below the progress bar, there’s a carousel displaying every location on the tour grouped into sections. It shows you what you’ve listened to already, and helps you tell whether an optional section just ahead has two locations or twenty. • You can use the new section menu to browse through the tour, with summaries to help you decide what you want to make time for as well as what might be best left for another day. • Or you can listen with your feet up whenever you like with Virtual Playback. This turns the tour into something you can take in like a podcast or audio book. • Some locations have multiple photos, and we’ve added pinch to zoom so you can get in close and see the finer details. • If you’re running out of time, or energy, but you’re still trying to take in as much as you can, you can adjust the playback speed to get through things a little faster, at a higher pitch.

Excellent tour of Toulouse - not to be missed
For first time or return visitors, this is an excellent VoiceMap tour of the old city center area of Toulouse. Not only is Elyse an excellent historian/art historian, but she also gives wonderful context to the buildings, but also adds details and notes of places you might want to pause at or return to after the tour to take a closer look. Also don’t miss her conversations that you can access through the website and podcast called Join Us in France. There are many episodes that take place in Toulouse and great ideas for day trips in and around Toulouse.
Solid core but a little rough around the edges
I've followed a couple of tours and found their content to be good. The app itself is easy to use on the whole, but I wish you could open up the directions to the starting point in Google Maps as I don't have Apple Maps installed on my phone. Some indication of the cardinal direction to the starting point (if navigating without using a map) would also be appreciated (e.g. "30 yards to the north" rather than just "30 yards away"). And this is quite minor, but I don't need to receive the whole "You've paused the tour. To resume..." spiel every time I pause. Once when you first use the app or even once every day or tour would probably be sufficient to remind most people. Lastly, there seems to be a minor bug with the download status where it shows the last map segment (I think it was the map) as not having completely downloaded until I restart the app. That happened for both tours I downloaded.
Good app with potential to be excellent
Let me to start off by saying that functionality wise, this is a very exciting app. The audio synced to location works well and it’s an exciting way to explore a city on your own if you don’t wish to do an organized group walking tour. The tours I took through this app in Granada, Spain completely enhanced my trip to the city taking me to places I wouldn’t go on my own and giving me a ton of great information in the history of the city. That said, I found that the tours for other cities I used the app in (Seville and Madrid) were much less successful. This app runs on free lance content and it’s missing a lot of basic walking tours for popular tourist cities, and some of the tours it does offer for those cities are too niche to be appealing for most users. Hopefully this will change in the future if the app continues to attract creators but right now it’s missing some key content.

Around Review: The Best Place to Take Audio Tours
I love walking tours. The first thing I do when I arrive somewhere is take a walking tour. It’s a great way to get the feel of a new place, see the main sights, and adjust to the local culture. You also get to meet a local expert guide who can answer your questions and give you tips on other spots to check out (I always ask for recommendations for places to eat, for example).
But sometimes the dates and times that walking tours are offered don’t line up with my schedule, especially if I’m only in a place for a few days or if I’m visiting when there is a local holiday. I also like to be spontaneous, and often tours are already filled up for the day or don’t allow last-minute registrations. Plus, I really like going at my own pace when exploring a city, and I don’t always feel like being tied to a tour for three hours.
In the past, this meant I was just out of luck. But today, there’s another option available: self-guided audio tours.
With the prevalence of smartphones, it’s now possible to access guided walking tours from your mobile device, giving you tons of freedom when it comes to taking a walking tour.
I’ve taken audio tours around the world, and they can really run the gamut in terms of quality. Around aims to take the guesswork out of finding quality audio tours by vetting local guides and compiling tours from cities around the world in one place.
In this review of Around, I’ll share everything you need to know about using this new tour marketplace!
Table of Contents
What is Around?
How does around work, pros of using around, cons of using around.
Around is a platform where travelers can find and take self-guided audio walking tours in major cities around the world. Around vets local experts who create and list tours on the website, so you always know that you’re getting a quality tour guide. (Around does not run tours themselves; they rely on local experts.)
Tours generally last 60-90 minutes, though there are longer ones (such as Full Immersion Verona ) lasting upwards of 180 minutes. Keep in mind that the estimated times do not take into account how many times you stop and start (and they certainly don’t account for that delicious pastry break!).
Since tours on Around are created by local experts, there’s a mixture of detailed tours on a particular topic (such as the 19th Century Skyscrapers Tour of Chicago , led by a professional Chicago tour guide who specializes in architecture and design) as well as general overview tours geared towards first-time visitors (like the Berlin Highlights Tour ).
Tours are mainly offered in English, though there are some tours in Spanish and Italian, with the intent of adding more languages soon.
All you need to take an Around walking tour is a smartphone with GPS enabled and an internet connection (no need to download a new app). Rather than the traditional tour model where you pay per tour, with Around, you purchase an all-access pass which lets you take as many tours as you want within a period of time, from 24 hours to 14 days.
This is a great value when you consider that taking one walking tour is normally around $5-20 USD, and for most cities on Around, there are at least three tours currently offered. If you’re visiting a place for a weekend, the three-day pass is perfect, as you can take all the tours you want for just $14.99 USD. Purchases on Around can be made in five main currencies (USD, EUR, GBP, CAD, AUD) to avoid exchange rate fees.
If you’re more of a slow traveler and staying somewhere longer, or are visiting a few different cities on one trip, there are one-week and two-week passes too.
Once you purchase a pass, you’ll unlock all Around’s available tours for that period of time. As the company started in Italy , you’ll see the most cities represented there:
You’ll also find tours in the U.S., Canada, Australia, and throughout Europe, with new cities being added all the time. In fact, since I started writing this post, new cities have been added!
On each tour page, you’ll see helpful information including the duration, recommended starting point, information about the expert guide, a map of the stops, and a short description of what the tour is about:
I really like how you can listen to a 30-second preview of the tour. That way, you can quickly get a feel for the guide before you decide to embark on a longer audio adventure with them.
Each tour page also displays some of the highlights in visual form, which is super helpful for knowing whether the tour covers main city landmarks that you might not want to miss:
While tours all come with a recommended starting point, you can start at any location on the tour. Upon starting, you’ll follow the route, guided by your map and the voice of your guide. Once you reach an appointed stop on the tour, an orange button pops up. Hit the button to listen to the guide’s expertise at the stop.
You can pause and replay each stop as many times as you like, which is handy in busy cities that might be loud or otherwise distracting.
In fact, while you’re in the city where the tour takes place, you can play each stop’s audio whenever you like. This is not only helpful if you’re using an older device that might struggle with precise GPS (so it might not recognize if you’re standing at an audio stop), but if you didn’t have time to finish the tour while walking around, you can still learn the information while relaxing in your hotel or hostel later.
And as long as your access pass remains valid, you can take the whole tour again if you really want to!
Around takes the guesswork out of finding quality audio walking tours, and there’s a lot to like about this newcomer on the tour company scene.
I especially liked how, with Around, you can:
- Take expertly guided walking tours at any hour of the day
- Stop, start, replay, and come back to tours on a truly self-paced tour experience
- Enjoy as many tours as you want for one price, with their unlimited access pass
Around is still in development, meaning that they’re still working out the kinks. While they’re off to a great start, here are some places I’d love to see them improve upon:
- More cities offered (which is something they’re actively working on)
- Downloadable tours as you currently need an internet connection to take tours, which is something you may not have when you’re traveling
- Short bios of the guides to highlight their background and expertise (most are professionally licensed guides)
Around is a cool, affordable platform with lots of potential. While there are a lot of companies offering walking tours these days, there still isn’t a lot of focus on audio tours. It’d be great to have a go-to place to find curated expert-led audio tours around the world. I’m looking forward to seeing them flesh out some of the features and add more cities too. If you’re somewhere that Around offers tours, definitely check them out!

About SelfTour
Here are the reasons selftour surpasses all other tours....
All turn-by-turn directions and descriptions are spoken for easy to easy navigation and understanding. Our tours are a complete circle so you end up where you started… not some unknown location!
All information is activated by GPS as you move.
No waiting at a specific time for others to show up. Go when you want, take a brake anytime, and resume at your own pace and schedule.
Should you make a wrong turn, there is a complete map indicating all the sites along the way. Also pictures of the individual sites are available to insure you are looking at the right sight.
Our travel experts do intense research choosing the best sites to see and the accurate information you want to know about each.
Both are available. The platform used in our apps is new technology engineered by iApp Tours using exclusive mobile software.
No more straining or pushing to get close to hear the tour guide. The audio comes directly to your ear buds or car stereo system.
If you missed something in the audio description, or didn’t understand the directions, no problem! Simply touch the position on the phone or tablet map and it will play again.
Excellent writers and professional voice actors, music, sound effects and a light delivery style make the listening fun.
Tour at a fraction of the cost of other paid guided tours. Even “free” guided tours pressure you for a “tip” or to purchase something in the guide’s “favorite store”. Our tours have no advertising or referrals.
If there’s a tour worth taking, it’s worth taking a SelfTour™

Good Narrators.
The voices were charming. I particularly liked the Italian fellow. He was like a friend leading us through his hometown.
There was not enough emphasis on the role of black folks and their contribution to this city. Our forefathers were not all musicians. They contributed in many ways to the building of the French Quarter and its history.
“It was our first trip to the Napa wine area and we would have been totally lost without this app. It not only took us to a lot of fun places, good wineries and some places we never knew existed, but was enjoyable to listen to. My husband and I highly recommend it.”
Being able to follow the route with GPS took the scariness out of roaming through a foreign city for the first time. When will you have a tour of Paris?
Too much driving on all those small roads, especially in the St. Helena area, so we gave up part way. What we did hear of the tour was good.
We particularly enjoyed the back roads the tour featured. Narrow tree lined roads, picturesque landscapes, charming houses, and some hidden wineries where you could sample some very good wine for less. A beautiful tour through a beautiful area. I’d do it again.

How It Works
Get the full story.
Just Ahead audio guides are written by expert authors and narrated by professionals. You simply drive, while Just Ahead informs and entertains you.
GPS-guided tour
As you drive in your car or travel by train or bus, Just Ahead takes you on a guided tour. It uses GPS to know exactly where you are and what to say. Imagine you’re cresting a hill and in front of you is a beautiful sight. You’re wondering what it is. That’s when Just Ahead shares with you an exciting story about what you’re looking at.
Works offline
Many of the most beautiful places in the world don’t have mobile phone service. Just Ahead is designed to work wherever you are, even without WiFi or a cell signal. Just be sure to download your guide before you go on your trip.
Built-in maps
Don’t you hate it when you try to use the maps on your smartphone and they don’t work because there’s no mobile phone service? No worries. Each Just Ahead guide comes bundled with an offline version of the maps you need, even without Internet access.
Great stories
Just Ahead guides are written by expert authors and filled with fascinating stories of history, geology, and wildlife. You can’t read and drive. It’s crazy, illegal, and will probably make you sick. Let us guide and inform you as you drive.
Suggested directions
Just Ahead can also help you avoid getting lost by suggesting directions. Just Ahead tells you why you should turn or not, what you should do after a turn, and recommends the best direction to take if there are multiple route options. It’s like having a professional tour guide in the car with you.
Trip-planning resources
Every time we go on a trip, we stress out about when to go, where to stay, what to see, etc. Wouldn’t it be great if you had someone with you who had been on that exact trip countless times? Sharing tips and tricks before you even leave your house? Just Ahead does exactly that.
We get you there and back
Just Ahead tells you everything you need to know about your destination. But we also know that there are a lot of miles between home and the park, or between this park and the next. That’s why we cover all the common routes to and from your destination. No matter which route you choose, we’re with you, telling you stories along the way.
Where next?
We at Just Ahead are working to build the most comprehensive series of audio guides for the whole world. Wherever you’re traveling, we want to be there.

What people are saying.
“I really like how we didn't need a signal since we were out of range, and also how it knew where we were and gave us info for the things right in our view!”
— Laurie G.
“Holy cow! Just got back from my Death Valley trip and I can't believe how great the app was along the journey. Not only did it guide us to hikes and places we might have (easily) overlooked, but gave us perspective of the park that allowed us to appreciate it on a whole new level (history, points of interest, flora/fauna, etc.).”
— Jesse Forest
★★★★★ “…great on-demand tour information about the park and really opened up the experience….”
— iTunes Reviewer
★★★★★ “This is one of the best apps I've ever used. Exploring Joshua Tree Park with this app was excellent. It even distinguished between the direction of driving and told different information for each direction.”

Claude vigée.
- Important Information
Claude Vigée was born on January 3, 1921, in Bischwiller. After finishing his schooling, he undertook studies in medicine. In 1940 he was forced into exile to southwest France, where he participated in the Jewish Resistance, before reaching the United States in 1943. Doctor of Letters, Claude Vigée teaches French and European literature at Ohio State University, then at Brandeis University. In 1950 he published his first major collection of poetry, La lutte avec l’ange. In the course of his career he met many great French writers, including Louis Aragon, Pierre Emmanuel, André Gide, Saint-John Perse, and Albert Camus. In 1960 he was appointed professor of Romance and Comparative Literature at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Once retired, he settled permanently in Paris. His literary work, which includes poetry and essays, many of which evoke his life experience in Bischwiller and Alsace and are marked by the theme of the heartbreak associated with exile, has been rewarded with numerous prizes, including the Burckhardt Prize, the Fémina Vacaresco Prize, the Würth Prize, the Grand Prix de l’Académie Française, and the Grand Bretzel d’Or. Claude Vigée is an honorary citizen of the city of Bischwiller.

Tour Guide System FAQs
A tour guide system is a wireless audio communication system used to communicate with an entire group simultaneously. It typically consists of a headset with a microphone and transmitter for the presenter (although handheld microphones can sometimes be used). Tour guests have headsets with receivers that allow them to hear the presenter loud and clear, even in noisy environments.
A tour guide speaks into a microphone to transmit their message wirelessly to a tour group. Guests wear earphones or headphones to hear the message. Some systems allow for interactive two-way communication with the touch of a button while others only allow the presenter to speak. Batteries are charged in a charging station and last for long periods of time.
Guided tours are conducted in a variety of settings, including manufacturing facilities, museums, historical sites, cruise ships, exhibit halls, demonstrations, college campuses, trade shows and much more. They can even be used for training, silent sessions and daily walkthroughs.

Yes. In particular, our ListenTALK system can be configured to accommodate language interpreters to listen to a presenter on one channel and communicate to international guests on another, helping encourage a diverse and inclusive tour experience.
A customized demo kit typically includes four pre-programmed transceivers with headset mics and accessories. Some tour planners, however, will rent a full system with multiple units as a test run before they decide to purchase.

Client Testimonials
Illinois Holocaust Museum & Education Center
Museum of russian icons, sacramento history museum, henry morrison flagler museum, uss bowfin submarine museum & park, mission san juan capistrano.
“As a Museum that values the power of storytelling to teach, learn, and inspire our audiences on the history and lessons of the Holocaust, the Tour-Mate system enables our guides with a high-level of clarity and meaning to connect with our visitors on a personal and more intimate level. They have enabled us to grow our tour program for both student and adults, and allowed them to share the same galleries without diminishing the experience or effectiveness of the tour quality because the guides are able to have an almost “private” conversation with their groups, providing another level of human connection for both our docents and the visitors.”
Kelley Szany Director of Education
"I just wanted to let you know that setup of the audio tours went really well at all three centres and all devices are running well… Thanks again for all your help, we have to say that we’re so excited at how easy the pieces are to use and how it took just a few minutes to set everything up including the security alerts."
Jaclyn D’Souza Marketing Specialist, Visitor Centres
"The wands are certainly a hit. We’ll be looking to add more languages over the next few years and perhaps even more tour “stops” on each tour."
Kiran Gill Judge Manager, Visitor Centres
“The Museum of Russian Icons has been Tour Mate customers for twelve years. Visitors love being able to access so much additional content at their own pace.”
Tara Young Deputy Director
"We’re really happy with the TM600 Tour-Mate system, which serves The Sacramento History Museum’s three tour programs beautifully. The Museum needed to upgrade from a radio frequency sound system to digital, and Tour-Mate’s system provides improved sound quality with a price that fit our budget, and comes with extremely responsive service. The Tour-Mate units are lightweight and small (guides portray 19th Century characters and hide the transmitters in their costumes) and easy to maintain. Steve Bannon and guest Mike Davis lay out ways a Trump White House can prosecute its enemies
Bannon: “We're going after you. The hunted are going to become the hunters.”
Written by Media Matters Staff
Published 04/24/24 12:09 PM EDT
Citation From the April 24, 2024, edition of Real America's Voice's War Room
MIKE DAVIS (ARTICLE III PROJECT): If the Supreme Court does not rule the right way and protects the presidency and therefore our country, that means the Trump 47 Justice Department can indict President Obama for capital murder, along with now-Judge David Barron on the First Circuit Court of Appeals, who was his legal advisor at the time, for their drone strike — extrajudicial drone strike — on two American citizens, including a minor. Capital murder.
The Trump 47 Justice Department can also indict Biden and Mayorkas and his advisors for their illegal mass parole and release of illegal immigrants into America and their resulting crimes.
Do the Democrats, does Liz Cheney, do these Democrats really want to go down this path, where the president of the United States and his advisors are not immune from criminal prosecution for their official acts?
STEVE BANNON (HOST): The only reason it's existing is that nobody has the stones to kick down the door and say guess what? We're going after you. The hunted are going to become the hunters.
We're going to force Jim Jordan, and that feckless, hapless staff of his to stand up and be men and go after this.

Kid Cudi is canceling his upcoming Insano: Engage the Rage World Tour after finding out his broken ankle is “much more serious” than he thought.
“Guys, so, I have a broken calcaneus,” Cudi posted Wednesday on social media. “Im headed to surgery now and there’s gonna be a long recovery time. We have to cancel the tour so I can focus on getting better to be out there in top shape to rage with you all.”
Kid Cudi is ‘hoping’ his Coachella broken ankle will be healed in time for Insano tour
Kid Cudi offers an update on the ankle he broke jumping off the Sahara stage on the last day of Coachella 2024. He seems upbeat, albeit a little uncertain.
April 23, 2024
The calcaneus is more commonly known as the heel bone. While some ankle fractures can heal in weeks, a broken calcaneus has a longer recovery time. “This type of fracture commonly occurs during a high-energy event — such as a car crash or a fall from a ladder — when the heel is crushed under the weight of the body,” the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons says on its website . Surgery is often required to prevent heel deformity.
This, friends, is why you don’t jump off one of the tallest stages at Coachella.
“There’s just no way I can bounce back in time to give 100%,” Cudi said. “The injury is much more serious than I thought.”
The U.S. leg of the Insano tour was supposed to start June 28 in Austin, Texas, and conclude with a show in Los Angeles on Aug. 30. Kid Cudi planned to head to Europe in early 2025; it’s unclear whether that part of the tour is still on.

The rapper said that ticket holders will be contacted by email and receive a full refund. Also, new tour dates will be announced as soon as possible.
In a video posted earlier this week and captured by TMZ , Kid Cudi said with a chuckle, “This is what happens when a 40-year-old man tries to prance around offstage like he’s 26, like he used to do back in the day.” He added that he was “hoping” to be healed up in time to hit the road.
So much for that idea.
“I’m so sorry fam and I love you all so much, thanks for the endless love and support. Im really disappointed as im sure you guys are too, but I will be back. Thats a promise,” the rapper wrote Wednesday.
“Im ok, just a lil soreness, but im in good spirits.”

Bob Heil, Whose Innovations Enhanced the Sound of Rock, Dies at 83
A groundbreaking audio engineer, he provided the large-scale systems that brought tours by the Who and the Grateful Dead to life.
By Alex Williams
Bob Heil’s career as a groundbreaking sound engineer who brought thunder and rich sonic coloring to tours by rock titans like the Grateful Dead and the Who began behind a pipe organ in a 1920s movie palace.
Mr. Heil, who helped usher rock into its arena-shaking era by designing elaborate sound systems that allowed rock juggernauts of the late 1960s and ’70s to play at volcanic volumes, first learned to appreciate the full spectrum of musical tones as a teenager, when he took a job playing the massive Wurlitzer pipe organ at the opulent Fox Theater in St. Louis.
“We had to voice and tune 3,500 pipes, from one inch to 32 feet,” he said in a 2022 video interview with the audio entrepreneur Ken Berger. “Voicing taught me to listen. Very few people know how to listen. Listening, you’ve got to mentally go in and dissect.”
Mr. Heil died on Feb. 28 of cancer in a hospital in Belleville, Ill., his daughter Julie Staley said. He was 83. His death was not widely reported at the time.
Although he worked behind the scenes, Mr. Heil was enough of a force that the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland credited him with “ creating the template for modern rock sound systems” In 2006, the Hall installed a public display containing his mixing boards, speakers and other items.
“The concert business became what it is today because he made the experience so much better for the customers,” Howard Kramer, who at the time was the Hall of Fame’s curatorial director, said in an interview that year with The Houston Chronicle. “No one made the leaps in live sound that he did.”
Mr. Heil got started in the business in 1966. Up to that point, top rock ’n’ roll bands often had to rely on feeble sound systems that were drowned out by screaming fans. That roar, Keith Richards of the Rolling Stones wrote in his 2010 autobiography, “Life,” was often so deafening in the band’s early days that audiences could hear nothing more than the drums: “We used to play ‘Popeye the Sailor Man’ some nights, and the audience didn’t know any different.”
Mr. Heil gave rock shows the sound arsenal they needed. “We were the first company back then to build a package P.A .,” he said in a 2008 interview with the audio magazine TapeOp. “You could come to Heil Sound in 1972 and leave the facility with a complete system: snakes, road cases, everything — even a modular mixer.”
He also put a distinctive stamp on 1970s rock with the Heil Talk Box, an effects pedal that transformed guitar parts and vocals into an interstellar drone. Joe Walsh used it in memorable fashion on his hit “Rocky Mountain Way” in 1973, and the Talk Box was a signature of Peter Frampton’s monster-selling 1976 double album, “Frampton Comes Alive!”
Mr. Heil’s career took a major turn in 1971, he told Mr. Berger, when a manager for the Who frantically called him in St. Louis, asking if he could get his crew to Boston the next day. The opening show there, part of the band’s tour in support of its hallowed album “Who’s Next,” had been a disaster, with one newspaper noting that the band’s “soaring brand of rock could not be heard” under the venue’s “miserable conditions.”
Roger Daltrey, the band’s lead singer, threatened to fly back to England until Mr. Heil arrived with his rig. When Mr. Daltrey “did the sound check,” Mr. Heil recalled, “it was OK, because it was a monster P.A.” He would work with the Who for the next decade.
Robert Gene Heil was born Oct. 5, 1940, in St. Louis, the elder of two children of Robert and LaVerna (Bills) Heil. His parents owned a clothing shop in the small town of Marissa, Ill., about 40 miles east of St. Louis.
As a youth, Bob not only played the accordion and the organ but also became a ham radio enthusiast, which gave him an early opportunity to fiddle with electronics. After graduating from Marissa Township High School in 1958, he spent time studying at the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign and the St. Louis Institute of Music.
In 1966 he opened Ye Olde Music Shop in Marissa, where he rented Hammond organs and repaired instruments for professional musicians. He also began to design his own audio systems.
Before long, he was supplying them to country acts like Dolly Parton and Little Jimmy Dickens as they came through St. Louis. His big break came in 1970, when management of his old employer, the Fox Theater, called him and told them of a crisis: The Grateful Dead was set to play there, but the band’s P.A. system had been confiscated by authorities in a drug raid.
On a subsequent call with Mr. Heil, Jerry Garcia, the band’s lead guitarist and vocalist, “almost dropped the phone” when he learned that Mr. Heil had a sophisticated system featuring an amplifier by McIntosh, the high-end audiophile brand, Mr. Heil told Mr. Berger. Performing Musician magazine later called the resulting concert “the night that modern live sound was born.”
In addition to his daughter Ms. Staley, Mr. Heil is survived by his wife, Sarah (Benton) Heil; another daughter, Barbara Hartley; a stepson, Ash Levitt, the president and chief executive of Heil Sound; a sister, Barbara Schneidewind; and seven grandchildren. Both daughters are from his first marriage, to Judy Mortensen, which ended in divorce.
By 1980, Mr. Heil had grown weary of life on the road, so he created a new line of headsets and microphones for the ham radio industry. At one point, Joe Walsh, another ham enthusiast, told him he wanted to use one of his microphones onstage.
Mr. Heil protested that the microphones were not concert quality. Mr. Walsh disagreed. “I was at his house and went downstairs to his little studio and he proved it to me,” Mr. Heil told TapeOp. “So I had to start listening all over again.”
