Fuller's Brewery Tour

If you’ve been following us for a while, you’ll know we are big fans of beer. We have visited breweries all over the place. Some of our favourites have been in Ludlow , Santorini , and Brussels . But wherever we go, we usually find some tour or tasting to get involved with.

fuller's brewery tour

And it just so happens London has a large brewery in Chiswick, right beside the River Thames. We visited Fuller’s Brewery with The London Pass , and it had been a long time coming since the brewery cancelled two previous visits. But we made it in the end. So, how was it? Great, actually! The brewery delivered some information we’d not heard before on a tour, plus the Griffin Brewery is home to something rather special, which has nothing to do with beer, but rather a wisteria plant.

20230805 Fullers Brewery Tour 010

The Fuller’s Brewery and the Griffin Brewery are the same place but are sometimes referred to by these two names, but its proper name is Fuller’s Griffin Brewery. So what’s a Griffin got to do with any of it? Because back in the day, the Griffin was the symbol of Meux and Reid’s Brewery in Liquorpond Street, and when that brewery collapsed, the name and emblem were adopted by the Thompson brothers, who owned the brewery at the time.

20230805 Fullers Brewery Tour 009

Fuller’s Brewery Tour

The Fuller’s Brewery tour takes you around the Griffin Brewery and lasts roughly 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours. It starts and ends in the shop, but we’ll come back to that later.

Once you’re signed in and have your high-vis vest issued, you get a health and safety brief. After all, safety is the number one priority, remember!

20230805 Fullers Brewery Tour 012

Once you’ve had your H&S brief, you are led out into the yard, where you get eyes on something you might not expect to see in a brewery – a wisteria plant. But what’s special about this particular one is that it is officially the oldest wisteria plant in England, dating back to 1816. It was one of two saplings brought from China. The other went to Kew Gardens but died. If you want to see it in bloom, visit the brewery between April and June.

20230805 Fullers Brewery Tour 001 1

After admiring this beast of a plant (it covers the side of the building!), you head into the Griffin Brewery, where you are introduced to the brewery’s history, the brewing process, and some of the old brewing kit used back in the day when the brewery, as it is known today, started.

20230805 Fullers Brewery Tour 005

It’s great that Fuller’s has kept hold of its heritage and developed its modern brewing techniques around the old stuff instead of ripping it all out. The tour is more comprehensive than the others we have been, too. It takes you on a longer journey, from the roots of the brewery, right through to the packaging robots and loading bay, plus there is talk about how Fuller’s tries to reduce its waste, such as sending the spent yeast off to be made into such things as Marmite.

Hock Cellar

Once the tour around the Griffin Brewery is complete, you will step into Hock Cellar. Undoubtedly, this is the best bit of the tour because it’s where the good bit happens – the beer tasting. The tasting offered something unique to any other brewery tour or beer tasting we’ve ever done. This is because you get whatever time is left to drink as much beer as you want.

20230805 Fullers Brewery Tour 016

We had 35 minutes left after the main tour, which left 35 minutes to try as many beers on offer as we wanted, which was quite a few. There are beers on tap, plus a few bottled ones, from the Fuller’s range, plus a few from their sister breweries, including the odd cider.

20230805 Fullers Brewery Tour 019

There’s also a bit of a museum in Hock Cellar, too. You’ll find some old artefacts from Fuller’s history in there, including the impressive beer dispensing machine from the days when they used to give beer to their staff to be drunk on-site.

20230805 Fullers Brewery Tour 020

Once you’re done in Hock Cellar, you’ll be taken back to the shop where your tour ends. Inside the shop, you will find a bar where you can get another drink or wander around to pick up a souvenir or buy some beer to take away.

20230805 Fullers Brewery Tour 030

Surprisingly, the beer is good value if you are buying one of the cases to take away. And it’s also worth noting – you can visit the shop without being on the Griffin Brewery tour.

A story that's been brewing for some time. Immortalised in the name of one of our famous ales, 1845 is a year that will forever be Fuller's. It was then that the partnership papers of Fuller, Smith & Turner were officially signed, marking the start of something special for London's brewery scene.

fuller's brewery tour directory

BREWED SINCE 1845

Our heritage.

The Fuller's Griffin Brewery is a special place. Not just to us, but to anyone who has ever enjoyed a pint of Pride. It's where the magic happens, where the malt meets the hops.

Our Beginnings

Our Beginnings

Beer has been made in this part of the capital for more than 350 years, dating back to the era of Oliver Cromwell. Back then, it was quite common for large households to brew their own beer. In the late 1600s, one such private brewhouse was in the gardens of Bedford House on Chiswick Mall. Another, a far humbler concern, was operating nearby at the cottage of Thomas Urlin.

When Urlin died, the property passed to his widow and son-in-law, a gentleman named Thomas Mawson, who stepped in to take up the reigns as manager. It was he who laid the foundations for a major brewing enterprise – buying The George public house and two adjoining cottages for £70, then later snapping up the brewhouse on Bedford House too.

The Griffin is born

The Griffin is born

The next notable owners of the brewery were John Thompson and David Roberts, whose six-year partnership suffered due to a series of legal wranglings. The duo predictably parted company in 1786 when Roberts left to join the Royal Household and Thompson soldiered on alone.

Eventually, the brewery passed to his sons, Douglas and Henry. It was under their stewardship in 1816 that the brewery first acquired the Griffin name and emblem. The Griffin had previously been the symbol of Meux and Reid's Brewery in the aptly-named Liquorpond Street, but when that business collapsed, the Thompson brothers moved swiftly to snaffle the name.

The adoption of the Griffin is a decision that's certainly stood the test of time, but other decisions by the pair were far less successful. Double dealings pertaining to mortgages led the brothers – and the brewery – to the brink of ruin. They needed investment, and fast

Fuller, Smith and Turner

Fuller, Smith and Turner

The Thompson brothers invited Philip Wood, brother of London's Lord Mayor, into the partnership, but Wood knew his money alone couldn't save the brewery. He too looked elsewhere for help. It came from one John Fuller.

Fuller was a wealthy country gentleman and he jumped at the chance to come aboard, investing primarily on behalf of his son. He soon bought one of the Thompsons out and, within a couple of years, found himself the majority shareholder at the brewery.

In 1839, John Fuller died and passed control to his son, John Bird Fuller. The younger Fuller moved quickly to make his mark, and by 1845 he'd severed ties with the Thompsons to take the reins by himself.

He sought investment and expertise from third parties though, and John Smith – already helping to run a successful brewery elsewhere – was invited aboard. He invested on behalf of his son, Henry Smith, and his son-in-law, John Turner.

So it was that Fuller, Smith & Turner came into being

setting the standard

setting the standard

Following incorporation, a wave of acclaimed ales came out of the brewery. Chiswick Bitter arrived on the scene in 1930. Into the '50s, London Pride took centre stage. Then, in 1971, ESB was launched. In 1997 our first Vinatge Ale was launched using the finest ingredients available which has continued to be our philosophy to this day

Awards started flowing as freely as the beer and we soon became the first brewery to win the CAMRA Champion Beer of Britain award with three separate brews.

The story continues

The story continues

That's far from the end of the story though, as we continue to invest and to innovate, building on our history and heritage to set new benchmarks for brewing and retailing as part of Asahi UK Ltd.

We have a great amount of Pride in our rich history – but there's plenty in our future too.

Informative and entertaining tour

Really informative and well organised tour., excellent 1.5 hours for beer buffs and just an interesting for the rest of us amateur beer drinkers! Sue our tour guide knew her stuff and was very entertaining - thanks Sue for making the tour a memorable experience. We went at the weekend when the brewery and bottling plant are not operating so if you want to see it for in action, plan your visit on a weekday. Very generous beer sampling for half an hour at the end. Highly recommend!

Our tour guide Symone was incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about the brewery and its history. Please ask for her if you fancy coming on the tour because she was amazing! For the record, I visited The Griffin Brewery back in October 2022.

Brilliant tour. John was very informative. Great to see the whole process. The tasting was most enjoyable! Honey Dew was definitely a favourite of mine.

Lisa was incredable and despite her saying "I wouldn't want to be stuck in a lift with her", I really really would like to be stuck in a lift with her, she had the best anecdotes and facts. Great tour and delicious tasting session.

We took the tour in October 25, 2023 and were lucky enough to be the only two on the tour. Our guide was Colin and he was great fun and very informative. He took his time and really got into the detail for us. Highly recommended for anyone who visits the greater London area.
