The Judds Reveal Final Tour: "The fans have always been my family of choice"

judds final tour cmt

The Judds made their first awards show appearance in more than 20 years on the 2022 CMT Music Awards Monday – and pretty soon, they'll be popping up all over the country.

The mother-daughter duo revealed plans for their first tour in more than a decade this week, and the tour title indicates it's the last time they'll make such a trek.

Dubbed The Final Tour, the run of shows includes 10 arena dates and launches on Sept. 30 in Grand Rapids, Mich., at Van Andel Arena.

Other stops on the tour include Toledo, Ohio, Green Bay, Wisconsin, Fort Worth, Texas, and more, wrapping on Oct. 28 at Bridgestone Arena in Nashville. Martina McBride will join The Judds on select dates.

"The fans have always been my family of choice," Naomi Judd said in a statement. "I love them dearly, so I'm chompin' at the bit to belt out our hits and reconnect with them once again. The cherry on top is singing with my beloved, wild, and extremely talented daughter… the best singer of any genre, Wynonna! She asked me if I was still going to twist, twirl and crack jokes. I answered, 'Heck yeah! I'm too old to grow up now!'"

Wynonna Judd said she was most looking forward to celebrating Judd music with fans.

"Mom and I have had quite the journey over the last 38 years, and the fans have been with us through it all," she explained in a statement. "This tour is a celebration for them!"

The Judds accumulated 14 No. 1 songs, 20 Top 10 hits and sold more than 20 million albums throughout their career. They'll be inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in May.

Tickets go on sale to the general public on Friday, April 15, at TheJudds.com.

As Wynonna Judd adds dates to what was to have been a final Judds tour, which now has other female stars rotating in Naomi Judd’s spot, a taping has been set with some of those guest performers for a “Last Concert” CMT special that will both cap off the current tour and pay homage to the Judds ‘ original swan song as a duo in 1991.

“The Judds: Love Is Alive — The Final Concert” will feature Wynonna being joined by Ashley McBryde, Brandi Carlile , Kelsea Ballerini , Little Big Town and Martina McBride, all of whom have taken their respective places as her singing partner in recent road dates and a touring addendum that has been announced for early 2023.

Popular on Variety

The concert and special will serve as a tribute not just to the Judds but specifically to the farewell special the Judds taped at MTSU’s Murphy Center on Dec. 4, 1991. After that initial split, the duo later reunited for a few select dates and mini-tours, but it marked the end of their time together as an ongoing recording and touring concern.

As with the tour, Sandbox Productions’ Jason Owen — the Nashville manager who’s also a driving force behind the current “Monarch” TV series — is acting as executive producer. “I remember when I was 15 years old, watching ‘The Judds 1991 Farewell Concert’ on repeat when it first came out on pay-per-view,” said Owen, an unabashed Judds mega-fan. “This is such an incredible, full-circle moment to reproduce that same iconic special with Wy, and having her joined by all the powerhouse women she has brought with her on tour.”

Joining Owen as executive producers are CMT’s Margaret Comeaux and Ladypants Productions’ Patrizia DiMaria. Executives in charge of production are Jackie Barba and Heather D. Graffagnino, while Leslie Fram serves as executive in charge of talent and Shanna Strassberg and Donna Duncan are talent producers.

The current leg of the “Final Tour” includes a sold-out stop Friday at Nashville’s Bridgestone Arena before wrapping up Saturday in Lexington, Kentucky. The newly added dates begin Jan. 26 in Hershey, Penn. and conclude Feb. 25 in Hollywood, Florida. The itinerary and ticket links can be found here .

The Judds Announce Their Final Tour

This fall, legendary mother and daughter duo the Judds will tour together for the first time in 10 years. The Final Tour is a 10-date trek across America.

Naomi and Wynonna Judd will begin their tour on Sept. 30 in Grand Rapids and wrap a month later in Nashville, playing arenas along the way. Martina McBride will open for the soon-to-be Country Music Hall of Fame act. Tickets go on sale on April 15 at the Judds website.

This is the third time the Judds have attempted to put a period on their career. In 1991, they played what was billed as their final show after Naomi Judd  (now 76 years old) was diagnosed with Hepatitis C. Wynonna Judd, 57, would go on to enjoy 10 years of success as a solo artist while her mother battled the disease and raised awareness. Her health allowed her to return to the stage on New Year's Eve in 1999, after which they'd reunite for the Power to Change Tour.

Ten years later, the Last Encore Tour was billed as the last tour. While it is the last time they hit the road together, they would meet up in Las Vegas in 2015 for a nine-show Girls Night Out residency at the Venetian.

Fans won't have to wait until September to to see them play live, however — on Monday night (April 11), the Judds will sing "Love Can Build a Bridge" during the CMT Music Awards on CBS.

The pair have always been known for their stunning harmonies, but also their humor on stage. Musically, they have 14 No. 1 hits of 25 singles released to radio across two decades.

NASHVILLE, Tenn.  —  CMT  and  Sandbox Productions  announced Wednesday, Oct. 26, that country music legend  Wynonna Judd  will headline a history-making concert event with “ The Judds: Love Is Alive – The Final Concert ” on  Thursday, Nov. 3,  at the  Murphy Center  at  Middle Tennessee State University .

The event recreates “The Judds 1991 Farewell Tour” for a special televised event airing in March 2023 on CMT.

Wynonna’s current tourmates  Ashley McBryde ,  Brandi Carlile ,  Kelsea Ballerini ,  Little Big Town  and  Martina McBride  are also slated to join, sharing the same bill for the first time ever, with additional special guests to be announced. Tickets will be on sale beginning at 2 p.m. Wednesday  online with a portion of the proceeds benefiting NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) Tennessee.

The Judds  homecoming at MTSU will mark the largest concert to take place at the iconic Murphy Center since Wynonna   and her mother,  Naomi Judd , had their final show together on their farewell tour over three decades ago. The Nov. 3 made-for-television event also serves as the kickoff to the venue’s yearlong 50th anniversary celebration.

The news of  “The Judds: Love Is Alive – The Final Concert”  was revealed earlier Wednesday by Wynonna herself during a press luncheon at Fox & Locke restaurant in Leiper’s Fork, Tennessee, alongside CMT and Sandbox Productions event producers and representatives from MTSU. Naomi Judd died in April at her home in Leiper’s Fork near Franklin, Tennessee, at age 76.

“Stepping onstage at the Murphy Center for the first time since Dec. 4, 1991, will be so surreal for me. It was an emotional night over 30 years ago and will be an emotional night, for different reasons, now,” said Wynonna. “I can’t wait to lean into the nostalgia with the artists who have made this tour so special and recreate one of the most iconic nights in Judd ‘Herstory!’”

Here’s a short video of her very heartfelt, personal remarks and a word of thanks from MTSU President Sidney A. McPhee:

Margaret Comeaux , executive producer and senior vice president of production, music and events at CMT said, “It’s serendipitous magic on so many levels to be able to capture Wynonna’s return to the Murphy Center, almost exactly 31 years to the date. And it’s especially meaningful as an MTSU alum to produce such a landmark event, working hand in hand with the university’s faculty and staff to have their students actively participate in the production in its entirety.

“We are also extremely excited to collaborate once again with our amazing partners at Sandbox to present a true Judds event spectacular that has been decades in the making and continue to tell the next chapter in Wynonna’s story,” Comeaux added.

Said Sandbox Productions’ Jason Owen , executive producer: “I remember when I was 15 years old, watching ‘The Judds 1991 Farewell Concert’ on repeat when it first came out on pay-per-view. This is such an incredible, full circle moment to reproduce that same iconic special with Wy, and having her joined by all the powerhouse women she has brought with her on tour. I’m so excited for everyone to watch — and for the incredible legacy of The Judds to live on forever.”

Beverly Keel,  dean   of MTSU’s  College of Media and Entertainment , noted the deep connection between mother and daughter in their music.

College of Media and Entertainment logo

“What is most compelling about the Judds’ music is that it captures the love between two women. The Murphy Center event will allow us all to celebrate that love,” Keel said. “After all, it was love that built a bridge between the Judds and their audience. It is love that connects the family of country music females and strengthens them as they work to make their voices heard.”

Beverly Keel, dean, College of Media and Entertainment

MTSU President Sidney A. McPhee thanked Wynonna for bringing such an important event to Murphy Center, which has undergone almost $6 million in renovations as the university celebrates its 50th anniversary of service as a venue anchor of the campus.

“Wynonna, with your announcement today, and the national telecast that will come from your concert, you are launching our second half-century with style and significance,” McPhee said. “This concert will join the rich history of Murphy Center, an appropriate bookend to that memorable 1991 concert.”

As announced earlier this week,  “The Judds: The Final Tour” will continue for a second run into 2023, following its initial 11-date area tour with McBryde, Carlile, Ballerini, Little Big Town and McBride all set to return for select dates, with more special guests to be announced. For more information, visit  TheJudds.com .

“The Judds: Love Is Alive – The Final Concert”  is a co-production from CMT and Sandbox Productions; Margaret Comeaux (CMT), Jason Owen (Sandbox) and  Patrizia DiMaria  (Ladypants Productions) are executive producers. The executives in charge of production are  Jackie Barba  and  Heather D. Graffagnino .  Leslie Fram  is executive in charge of talent.  Shanna Strassberg  and  Donna Duncan  are talent producers.

About The Judds

judds final tour cmt

Wynonna and Naomi Judd brought a fresh acoustic sound to country music, with unmistakable harmonies surrounding Wynonna’s powerful lead vocals and Naomi’s unshakable creative drive. The Judds are often celebrated for a rarely interrupted stretch of 14 No. 1 hits when every single of theirs released by RCA landed in the Billboard Top 10 and a career that defined what it means to be individualists in the music business. The Judds dominated touring in the ’80s with 20 Top 10 hits, have sold more than 20 million albums and blazed a trail for duos and women who have followed them. Together, The Judds have 16 gold, platinum and multi-platinum albums and longform videos, led by two-time platinum albums “Why Not Me” and “The Judds Greatest Hits.” Their stripped-back style revived the popularity of acoustic sounds in country music and opened up the genre for more traditional approaches.

Wynonna Judd set for new concert, documentary to air on CMT, Paramount+

The country music hall of famer is set to celebrate her iconic mother's legacy one year after her tragic death.

judds final tour cmt

On April 30, 2022, Wynonna Judd's mother and decade-long mainstream country music collaborator, Naomi Judd, tragically died a day before the duo was set to be inducted together into the Country Music Hall of Fame.

A new documentary feature and concert special will be released on April 26 and 29 to highlight the tumultuous past 12 months in the legend's life.

"Wynonna Judd: Between Hell and Hallelujah" -- created via a partnership between MTV Entertainment Studios, Hello Sunshine and Sandbox Productions -- premieres on April 26 via Paramount+.

A press release notes that it "offers audiences a raw, first-hand glimpse into Wynonna's life as she bravely embarks on her next chapter following Naomi Judd's untimely passing."

"Beginning with the decision to honor her mother's legacy by continuing with "The Judds: The Final Tour," the documentary captures candid on-stage and behind-the-scenes moments as part of the sold-out nationwide tour and footage of Wynonna spending quiet, reflective time on the farm processing grief with her family and animals."

"It's real and it's raw. It's celebration and sadness. It's all of the people who I leaned on during one of the toughest seasons of my life. I wanted the opportunity to tell my story in my voice. If doing so helps one person out there choose life, then I am grateful," Judd adds via a press release.

,Moreover, April 29 sees CMT premiering Wynonna's November 2022-recorded two-hour homecoming concert return to the Murphy Center at Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU), where the vocalist recreated The Judds' 1991 farewell tour finale alongside Ashley McBryde, Brandi Carlile, Kelsea Ballerini, Little Big Town and Martina McBride.

"Hello Sunshine is so honored that Wynonna trusted us, and our cameras, to join her on this tour and during this time. We hope that Wynonna's strength and vulnerability help others experiencing grief. We also hope that her humor, her heart and her powerful voice inspire viewers as much as they did us. This is a very special story," said Sara Rea, head of unscripted for Hello Sunshine.

Guyton’s new single, a gentle ballad about a mother’s fierce love, opens with the heart-touching lines, “I see pictures of my mama, hangin’ on the wall/ She’s never looked so happy, and I’ve never looked so small/ Now I’m holdin’ you and I know what they say is true/ When a baby’s born that’s when a mother’s born too.”

Guyton and husband Grant Savoy welcomed their first child, son Grayson, in Feb. 2021 and the acoustic ballad’s moving lyric video features home movie footage of Guyton in the hospital cradling her then newborn and spending time with the now toddler. “Cuz I felt it before, but it wasn’t like this/ Ain’t a thing I wouldn’t do, ain’t a thing I wouldn’t give/ It’s the kind you fall into and never hit the bottom of/ It’s a scary love,” she sings on the chorus.
