Ilustration of Mahogany Bay Cruise Center

Essential guide to Mahogany Bay and Coxen Hole cruise terminals in Roatán (Honduras): where cruise ships dock, all services, and amenities at the cruise terminals.

By: Editor-in-Chief Updated: May 30, 2023

Most cruisers do not realize that there are two distinct ports and terminals in Roatán. Frequent cruisers that have called at Roatán with the same cruise line may believe that the port where a specific cruise line docks is the only one in Roatán.

Where Ships Dock in Roatán

However, different cruise liens dock in two distinct ports. Carnival Corporation cruise ships dock at Mahogany Bay whilst ships from all other cruise lines dock at Port of Roatán Town Center (aka Coxen Hole).

Mahogany Bay Cruise Center

The largest of the two ports in Roatán is the Mahogany Bay Cruise Center , located on the southwest coast of the island and owned by Carnival corporation. Obviously, this is the docking port (and Terminal) for Carnival ships but also for Princess, Holland & America, and all other cruise lines belonging to this corporation.

The Mahogany Bay Cruise Center has two berths where two mega ships can dock. The piers and terminal can get busy and crowded at times with over 8,000 passengers and crew.

The Mahogany Bay Terminal

The two piers of Mahogany Bay share the same exit before entering a wide walkway that leads to a vast 20 acre welcome center/terminal. Once passed a couple of stores on both sides of the walkway, you will be on large square opening into the left.

Here you will find every single service and amenity the cruise traveler many need: Restrooms, ATM, Phones, the inevitable duty-free shops with the ubiquitous brands found in the Caribbean, Grills, Bars, Restaurants and a craft market. At the end of this elongated square, you will also find an information booth, car rentals, the shore excursions hub and a taxi stand.

To the right side of the exiting walkway, it is impossible to miss the Magical Flying Beach Chair. This chairlift service transports guests from the main plaza directly to white sand of Mahogany Beach - the all day pass costs $14 USD. If you prefer, there is a shaded path to Mahogany Beach which is around 15 minutes walk away.

Mahogany Beach

The top attraction of Mahogany Bay Cruise Center is the beach. In fact, this is more like a private island run by Carnival Corporation and, in a way, is just an extension of your cruise ship. This 10-acre area with its over 800-foot-long beach is dotted with water-sports, beach activities, beach bars and grills.

For those looking for a more secluded day at the beach, the Blue Lagoon has personal beach bed cabanas on a private beach.

If you are calling at Roatán on ships of cruise lines such as Royal Caribbean, NCL, MSC, Oceania, Regent or Viking (among others) you will be docking at the Port of Roatán Town Center frequently referred to as Coxen Hole - the name of the largest city on the island of Roatán just a few minutes walk away. What's at the Coxen Hole Cruise Terminal

This port and Terminal is much smaller than Mahogany Bay, only has one pier perpendicular to the coast and the exit gates open directly into a nice but smaller plaza. But the terminal also has all basics services like Restrooms, Car Rental, Pharmacy, ATM, Internet, an Information Booth, and Taxi Stand.

Photo of Coxen Hole Cruise Terminal in Roatán (Honduras) Cruise Port

This terminal only has a few duty-free stores and gift shops. The shore excursion bus hub is on the right side of the terminal. On the left side, you will find the the taxi dispatch and the exist to the main street leading to Coxen Hole. Although within walking distance, there isn't much to see in this small town.

Roatán Cruise Port

Roatan Cruise Center

There are two cruise ports located on the island of Roatán.

Mahogany Bay Cruise Center

Carnival Cruise Line built this port/cruise center, which can accommodate two mega-ships. Carnival cruise ships dock here, along with Princess and Holland America cruise lines.

Mahogany Bay Cruise Center is a gigantic 20-acre welcome center with a “private” beach. Many cruisers will spend the day within the Cruise Center visiting the restaurants, bars, duty-free shops, craft markets, or just relaxing on the beach.

The Port of Roatán (Also Known as Coxen Hole)

This port can accommodate three cruise ships at a time. Ships from all of the other cruise lines (besides those mentioned above) typically dock here.

This port is within walking distance of Roatán island’s largest city, Coxen Hole. The port terminal has restrooms, taxi stands, tour and excursion pick-ups, and an ATM.

What Cruise Passengers Need to Know About Roatán Cruise Port

Roatan

Roatán’s official currency is the Honduran lempira (HNL). However, cash (including USD!) reigns supreme here. You can pay with U.S. Dollars on Roatán, just expect to get change back in lempiras.

The official language in Roatán is Spanish, but English (with a Creole twist) is widely spoken.

The time zone in Roatán, Honduras, is Central Standard Time, which is one hour ahead of the Eastern time zone.

Roatán is an island in Central America located just off the Honduras coast. Its climate is tropical rainforest, with temperatures hovering in the 80-degree Fahrenheit range year-round.

Mid-July through October is considered the “warm season,” with temperatures in the upper 80s and low 90s. Roatán is very humid year-round, with humidity reaching 90% in the last four months of the year.

The rainy season in Roatán is from September through July.

Getting Around Roatán

The island of Roatán is 48 miles long and 5 miles wide at its widest point. It is safest to book tours (whether private or cruise ship excursions) to get around Roatán.

Whether you port in Mahogany Bay Cruise Center or Coxen Bay, activities are within walking distance. The Mahogany Bay Cruise Center is a 20-acre complex with a beach, restaurants, bars, and shopping areas.

Coxen Hole is Roatán’s largest city. Activities and amenities, including shopping, restaurants, and bars, are within walking distance of the port.

Public Transit

There are many taxis and buses available for transport in Roatán. The “buses” are typically 16-passenger vans running regular routes between Coxen Hole and West End or French Harbour.

Taxis can be private “privado,” which costs a little more, or “colectivo,” which means you might pick up and drop off other people along your route. This is a fun way to chat with locals but might take a little longer to get to and from your destination.

Car Rentals

Car rentals are available on Roatán, with rental kiosks near the cruise terminal. The island is easy to navigate, just watch for horses and cows on the road.

The Best Roatán Shore Excursions

Roatan shore excursions

Roatán has a different vibe than other Caribbean cruise ports . This Honduran island has a Central American influence with a Caribbean twist.

Roatán is situated on top of exposed ancient coral reefs, and just off-shore is the second largest reef system in the world: the Mesoamerican Reef System, also known as the Great Mayan Reef.

The diverse culture and unique natural wonders of Roatán make for a one-of-a-kind cruise port experience. Here are 22 of the best Roatán Shore Excursions.

1. Mahogany Bay Cruise Center

Carnival designed this 20-acre port complex to be an excursion in itself. The 800-foot-long white sand Mahogany Beach is part of the Cruise Center. You can get off the ship and spend the day reading on a beach chair or swimming in the crystal clear waters.

This beach gets busier and louder as the day goes on, so grab your chair early or choose a different beach if you are looking for quiet. The Cruise Center has a mix of duty-free shops and retailers, including Diamonds International, Del Sol, and Piranha Joes.

If you are hungry, there are several restaurants in the Cruise Center. Stop by Fat Tuesday’s atop Monkey Hill for amazing views, some Caribbean Jerk chicken, and a cold and refreshing “Banana Banshee” Daquiri.

2. Magical Flying Beach Chair

This is a fun experience that is unique to Roatán. Immediately after disembarking at Mahogany Bay Port, there is a chairlift that you can take to transport you to nearby Mahogany Bay Beach.

You’ll find the Magical Flying Beach Chair up the hill and to the right of the Cruise Center. You can purchase an “all-day pass” for unlimited use.

Be aware that the Flying Beach Chair frequently stops for people to get on and off. The chance to see iguanas in the trees and the magnificent ocean view make this a pleasant option.

3. Shop ‘Til you Drop at The Town Center Coxen Bay

Roatan cruise port shopping

There is a fantastic variety of duty-free boutiques and local souvenir shops in The Town Center shopping area at the Port of Roatán.

Be sure to stop at “Yaba Ding Ding” for local handmade arts and crafts, including Garifuna and Lenca pottery artwork. If you love photography, you’ll marvel at the underwater photos by Roatán local Shawn Jackson in his gallery here.

4. Snorkel, Scuba, and Relax at West Bay Beach

The world’s second-longest reef system, the Mesoamerican Reef, lies just off the coast of West Bay Beach. This beach is 30-45 minutes from the cruise ship docks and has some of the best snorkeling and diving in Roatán.

The beach is public and free to enter. However, paying a nearby resort for their day-use fee gives you access to chairs and a break from the vendors trying to sell their goods and services.

If you want to snorkel or scuba, water taxis from West Bay Beach will take you closer to the reef.

5. Cuddle a Sloth at an Animal Sanctuary

Roatan sloth

Several animal sanctuaries exist in Roatán. These excursions typically include the opportunity to hold a sloth, feed monkeys, and interact with parrots and macaws.

You can book a private tour, which is a little more expensive but allows you to move through the animal sanctuary (and have the experiences!) more quickly. This experience takes around an hour, so it is a good one to bundle with other excursions.

6. Spend the Day at The Little French Key

This resort is a one-stop excursion spot. You can pay a fee to participate in activities like horseback riding, swimming with pigs, massages, manicures, snorkeling and scuba diving, kayaking, rope swings, and a gift shop. They also have a mini zoo where they can interact with animals.

Look for the VIP pass, which includes drink vouchers, a lunch plate, a massage, horseback riding, and access to a less-crowded beach. Little French Key is a 30-minute drive from the port.

7. Taste the Unique Flavor of Wild Honduran Chocolate at a Chocolate Factory

Roatan Chocolate Experience

Cacao beans in Honduras are unique because they are grown in the wild instead of on plantations. Several chocolate factories can be visited to try this tasty treat.

Factory tours are usually a part of a “bundled” excursion. If you are a chocolate lover, this is a “must” for treats and souvenir shopping in Roatán.

8. Scuba Dive at the Mayan Reef

You don’t want to miss the opportunity to scuba dive in the second-largest reef system in the world: the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef. Scuba diving is one of the top things cruisers recommend for porting here. Roatán has excursions available for every level of diver, from beginner to scuba-certified.

The Mesoamerican Barrier Reef is home to diverse sea life, including colorful fish, coral, sea turtles, eels, stingrays, sponges, starfish, shrimps, and lobster. Most Scuba excursions take place on the West Side, nearest the reef, and will take several hours.

There are many dive shops in Roatán. You can book a beginner scuba excursion, where you learn scuba basics in the safety of a pool and then venture to the reef. Many boutique diving excursions will allow you to use your scuba certifications for magnificent dives in the deep.

9. See the Island’s Diversity while Horseback Riding

Horseback riding is a relaxing way to escape the crowds and see the diversity of this beautiful island.

There are many different types of rides available, from beach horseback riding to mountain trails. Some excursions offer a combo that includes a ride through local villages, up into the mountains, and even a ride along the beach.

10. Bike Around an Island on Hydrobikes

If you are looking for an out-of-the-ordinary water sports experience, hydrobiking is an exciting choice. Hydrobikes have pedals like a traditional bicycle, but are on floats so you glide on top of the ocean.

Your guide will take you on a tour around a private island near French Key. Hydrobikes are easy for all skill levels and are an active way to spend a few hours in Roatán. Just be sure to put on plenty of sunscreen.

11. Eat and Beach at Ginger’s on Half Moon Bay

Half-Moon Bay is located on the West End of Roatán. It is an exceptional beach for swimming and snorkeling, and the location of a delicious Caribbean Grill called Ginger’s.

You can use the beach chairs at Ginger’s if you order food OR just come for the delicious fresh seafood. Catch a game on the TV and order coconut shrimp and a frozen mojito.

12. Cruise Through the Mangroves

Located on the East End of Roatán, this excursion includes transportation to Oakridge’s traditional Caribbean fishing village. The town is an interesting visit, with buildings constructed on stilts over the water and fishing boats bobbing in the bay.

In Oakridge, you’ll board an authentic cayuco (a small motorized canoe), and travel with a guide through a canal dug out in the mangroves many years ago to connect the harbors and bays. Parts of the tunnel are barely wide enough for the boats to get through.

The land in mangrove forests provides shelter for migratory birds and monkeys, so there is a good chance to see (and hear) unique Roatán wildlife.

13. Spot Sea Turtles Underwater and On Land

If you love sea turtles, Roatán is an outstanding place to see them in their natural habitat. This island has three types of sea turtles: Hawksbill, Green, and Loggerhead Turtles.

The best time to see sea turtles on land is during their nesting period from July to August, when they come ashore to nest on West Bay Beach and Paya Bay Beach. If you are in Roatán during the non-nesting months, you can also observe these beautiful sea creatures gliding in the crystal-clear waters.

Dive and snorkel excursions are available that will take you to spots where sea turtles frequent. Typically, they are on the West End.

14. Take a Historical Dune Buggy Tour to Punta Gorda

This half-day excursion will take you on an adventure up to the North Shore and the historic fishing village of Punta Gorda. Drivers need to be 16 years or older and have a driver’s license.

Follow a tour guide on an adventurous dune buggy drive to the Punta Gorda community. Once you’ve arrived, enjoy a dance and music show by the Garinagu (Garifuna), natives of Roatán.

Afterwards, you can purchase lunch from nearby restaurants, including Garifuna favorites like Machuca, a delicious mash of green and sweet plantains rolled into bites and dunked into tasty soups.

15. Monkey Around at Gumbalimba Park

This 20-acre beachfront adventure park offers many options for adventure seekers. Your tour guide will teach you about the history of the island of Roatán and its people while you hike around and observe animals, including monkeys and macaws, roaming in their natural environment.

After you’ve met the monkeys, you can get a monkey’ s-eye view of the park’s Trail Canopy Tour. You’ll zipline between 17 cable platforms extending from 120 to 500 feet in length.

Gumbalina also has water activities, including kayaking and going to the beach.

16. See Fish Without Getting Wet on a Glass Bottom Boat Ride

Glass bottom boats depart regularly from the beach at West Bay on Roatán. If you cannot snorkel or scuba but want to see the wonders of the reef, this is a fantastic way to do it.

These boats have windows that are underwater in a “semi-submarine” experience. Choose a glass-bottom boat ride if you want to witness the gorgeous marine life in Roatán without the hassle of sand and sunburns.

17. Underwater Scooter like a BOSS

If you want a unique scuba-like experience without the certification, you can book a BOSS (Breathing Observation Submersible Scooter) excursion. Your adventure will start with a catamaran ride out to the reef. Once you arrive, you’ll have the option to use snorkel equipment or try out the BOSS.

The BOSS submersible electric scooter has an oxygen-filled breathing helmet attached. You’ll be able to breathe freely while you scooter around 8 feet below the water surface, viewing the colorful marine life in Roatán.

Things to Do in Roatan Cruise Port

18. Learn About Local Flora at the Carambola Botanical Garden

The 40-acre botanical garden is home to a variety of beautiful plants, including orchids, fruit and nut trees, flowering plants, medicinal plants, the world-famous Honduran mahogany tree, and the popular “Chocolate Tree.”

The botanical gardens can be visited as a self-guided tour, or for more money, you can have an informational guided tour by the founder of the garden. Plan on walking along the jungle paths for anywhere from 30 minutes to 2 hours.

19. Snorkel Right-off Tabyana Beach

The reef is more accessible from this beautiful beach. Unlike other beaches in Roatán, which require a short boat ride to reach the reef, you can explore it about 300 feet off the shore of Tabyana Beach, making it one of the best beaches for snorkeling.

Some excursions include snorkeling at Tabyana, or you can take a 20-25 minute taxi cab ride from the port.

You can relax on towels on the public beach or pay a resort fee to use nearby chairs. Local beach vendors aren’t allowed in roped-off areas, so if you want to relax without interruption, the resort fee is worth the money.

20. Spend the Day on the Private Island of Maya Key

Maya Key is a small private island that is located 3 minutes from the Roatán Cruise Terminal and 15 minutes from Mahogany Bay Cruise Terminal.

This 11.5-acre island has two beaches, a 70,000-gallon pool, an animal rescue center, jungle garden paths, a Mayan Interpretation Center, A Honduras Art Exhibit, a restaurant, and a shopping center.

Day passes for Maya Key start at $35 and include a tour of the wildlife center, access to the beaches and pools, and the use of restroom facilities. It will cost extra for the museums, food and drinks, lockers and shopping.

21. Roatan Craft Markets

Roatan Rusty Fish craft market

There are some awesome craft markets in Roatan. Many items are hand made by locals. One great shop is Rusty Fish, which uses recyclable materials.

22. Sample Local Rum at the Roatán Rum Company

Rum cakes, rum cigars, and, of course, rum are the stars of this excursion. Located between West End and West Bay, the Roatán Rum Company offers samples of unique artisan rums (dark chocolate, spiced, and Caribbean coconut, to name a few) and rum cakes.

Roatán Rum Co. is located right across from El Faro Lighthouse and next door to a small souvenir market. Many excursions combine the three.

23. Choose Your Adventure with a Customizable “Best of Roatán” Tour

If you are having a hard time deciding between all of these exciting excursions, a “Best of” tour might be the way to have your rum cake and eat it, too.

You can choose the activities you want and have the expertise of a local driver to get you where you need to go. Roatán is small enough that you should be able to fit in several activities, and tour guides are often flexible with the weather.

A customizable tour is a great way to experience all that Roatán has to offer.

Booking Excursions through Cruise Line vs. Private Company

When visiting Roatan on a cruise, one of the important decisions you’ll need to make is how to plan your onshore excursions.

You have two primary options: booking excursions through the cruise line or opting for a private tour company. Each approach has its pros and cons, and the choice ultimately depends on your preferences and priorities.

Booking through the Cruise Line

  • Convenience : Cruise lines offer a seamless booking process. You can reserve excursions online or onboard the ship, making it hassle-free.
  • Reliability : Cruise line excursions are vetted and coordinated by the cruise company. You can trust that they will be well-organized and adhere to your ship’s schedule.
  • Safety : Cruise lines prioritize passenger safety and have established protocols for excursions. They typically work with reputable tour operators.
  • Guaranteed Return : If your cruise line excursion runs late and causes the ship to depart without you, the cruise line is responsible for getting you to the next port.
  • Variety : Cruise lines offer a range of excursions to suit different interests and activity levels.
  • Cost : Cruise line excursions can be more expensive than booking independently, as the cruise line adds a markup for convenience and coordination.
  • Crowds : Cruise line excursions may have larger groups, potentially reducing the personalized experience.
  • Limited Flexibility : Itineraries and schedules are fixed, leaving limited room for customization.

Roatan Cruise Port

Booking through a Private Tour Company

  • Cost Savings : Private tour companies often offer excursions at lower prices, allowing you to get more value for your money.
  • Personalized Experience : Smaller group sizes mean you can enjoy a more personalized and intimate experience.
  • Flexibility : Private tours can often be customized to your preferences, allowing you to explore Roatan at your own pace.
  • Local Knowledge : Local tour guides can provide insights into the island’s culture, history, and hidden gems.
  • Diverse Options : You can choose from a wide range of specialized tours that may not be available through the cruise line.
  • Coordination : You’ll need to coordinate transportation to and from the cruise port, which can be less convenient than cruise line excursions.
  • Safety : While many private tour companies are reputable, there is a degree of responsibility on your part to research and choose a reliable operator.
  • Time Management : Private tours may not adhere to your ship’s schedule as rigorously as cruise line excursions, so you need to be mindful of the departure time.
  • Risk : In the unlikely event of tour delays, the cruise ship may not wait for passengers on private excursions.

Tips for Choosing

To make an informed choice, consider the following tips when looking at Roatan cruise port:

  • Research : Read reviews, check ratings, and gather information about private tour companies to ensure they have a good reputation.
  • Budget : Determine your budget and compare the cost of cruise line excursions with private options.
  • Interests : Choose excursions that align with your interests and the type of experience you seek.
  • Group Size : Consider whether you prefer a larger group experience or a more intimate one.
  • Flexibility : If you value flexibility and customization, private tours may be the better option.
  • Safety : Regardless of your choice, prioritize safety by following the guidance of tour operators and respecting local rules.

Ultimately, both cruise line and private company excursions offer unique advantages.

Your decision should be based on what matters most to you—whether it’s convenience, cost, personalized experiences, or exploring Roatan cruise port’s hidden gems with a local touch.

The Roatan Cruise Ports

There are two cruise ports in Roatan: Coxen Hole and Mahogany Bay . Coxen Hole (Port of Roatan) is a public port that is used by Virgin Voyages , Royal Caribbean, Norwegian Cruise Line, Celebrity Cruises, MSC Cruises, and other cruise lines. Mahogany Bay is a private port owned by Carnival Corporation and used by Carnival Cruise Line, Princess Cruises, and Holland America Line. Both ports are located on the south side of the island, about 15 miles apart.

Coxen Hole Roatan Cruise Port

Coxen Hole is the main town and capital of Roatan, and it is where the public cruise port is located. This is the port that Virgin Voyages utilizes . It is a bustling port that has a more authentic and local feel than Mahogany Bay. Coxen Hole has a smaller shopping area with local vendors, handicrafts, and souvenirs. It also has a tourist information center, a bank, and an ATM.

Coxen Hole is the gateway to the rest of the island, and it is where you can find more options for shore excursions, transportation, and tours. You can take a taxi, a bus, or a water taxi to explore other parts of Roatan, such as West Bay, West End, Sandy Bay, or French Harbour. It does not have a beach within walking distance, but there are many nearby beaches that you can visit, such as Tabyana Beach, West Bay Beach, or Half Moon Bay Beach.

Mahogany Bay Roatan Cruise Port

Mahogany Bay is a modern and well-designed port that offers a lot of amenities and facilities for cruise travelers. It has a large shopping complex with duty-free shops, souvenir stores, restaurants, bars, and a pharmacy. It also has a transportation hub where you can book shore excursions, rent a car, or take a taxi.

The highlight of Mahogany Bay is Mahogany Beach, a private beach that is exclusive for cruise passengers. You can access the beach by walking for about 5 minutes, or by taking the Magical Flying Beach Chair, a ski-lift-style ride that costs $14 per person for unlimited rides. The beach is clean and spacious, with plenty of lounge chairs, umbrellas, cabanas, and water sports equipment for rent. There is also a beach bar and grill, a volleyball court, and a water park for kids.

Is Roatan, Honduras Safe for Cruise Port Passengers?

One of the common questions that cruise travelers have is whether Honduras is safe for cruise ships. Honduras is a developing country that has a high level of poverty, crime, and violence. However, Roatan is a separate island that is relatively safer and more peaceful than the mainland.

The cruise ports are well-secured and patrolled by security guards and police officers. The cruise lines also work closely with the local authorities and tour operators to ensure the safety and comfort of their passengers. However, this does not mean that you should let your guard down or ignore the common-sense precautions.

I felt safe all throughout Roatan. The locals were friendly and eager to have us visit as travelers. I also met a handful of travelers and ex-pats along the journey.

Enjoy the beach.

The main attraction of Roatan is the beach! The island has over 40 miles of coastline, with white sand, turquoise water, and palm trees. You can find a beach for every taste and preference, from secluded and quiet to lively and fun. Many cruise port visitors will go to West Bay Beach. Tabyana Beach and French Key are also great options for a lovely, relaxing day.

West Bay Beach is one of the best beaches I’ve ever been to. I snorkeled along the shore and saw gorgeous colorful coral and fish. The water is very calm for swimming. And, the sand is a soft powdery white.

Along West Bay beach, there are several hotels and resorts, including the popular Infinity Bay Resort (pictured below). Infinity Bay Resort also boasts La Palapa, Beach Bar and Grill, a fun waterfront hangout with delicious seafood and flowing drinks.

Snorkel the Reef

Another major attraction of Roatan is the reef. The island is part of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, the second-largest coral reef system in the world. The reef is home to thousands of species of fish, coral, and other marine life. It is also one of the best places in the world for snorkeling and diving, as the water is warm, clear, and calm.

You can find many spots and sites to explore the reef, from shallow and easy to deep and challenging. Some of the best spots and sites to explore the reef are West Bay Reef, Mahogany Bay Reef, and Mary’s Place which is a dive site on the south side of the island.

Experience the Culture

Roatan is not only a natural paradise, but also a cultural melting pot, with a variety of ethnic groups and languages. The island has a rich and diverse history and heritage, influenced by the indigenous, Spanish, British, African, and Caribbean cultures. You can experience the culture of Roatan by visiting some of the historical and cultural sites, such as the Roatan Museum which displays artifacts and exhibits related to the history, culture, and natural environment of the island, and Garifuna Village, the first Garifuna settlement in Central America.

Visit Roatan Chocolate Factory to see how the fresh chocolate is made on the island. While you’re there, scoop up some souveniers to take home!

You can also visit the Roatan Rum Company, which sells the most delicious rum cake! Some is packaged to easily take home from your travels, though you may have a tough time waiting to dig into it.

Encounter Wildlife

Roatan is not only a paradise for marine life, but also for land animals. The island has a diverse and abundant wildlife, with many species of animals, birds, reptiles, and insects. You can meet the wildlife of Roatan by visiting some of the animal sanctuaries and parks, such as Top Jungle, Daniel Johnson’s Monkey and Sloth Hangout, Arch’s Iguana and Marine Park, and Carambola Botanical Gardens and Trails.

Quick side note: Please do not touch or hold the sloths while visiting. This is considered animal cruelty, as sloths don’t like to be touched. Unfortunately, places that have branded themselves as sanctuaries are profiting over the exploitation of the sloths.

At port, there will be many drivers aggressively trying to get you to drive with them. I would recommend taking a private tour but if you just want a ride, try to arrange with a reputable company in advance of your trip.

If you dock at Mahogany Bay, you can walk to Mahogany Beach, a private beach that is exclusive for cruise passengers. It takes about 5 minutes to walk to the beach, or you can take the Magical Flying Beach Chair.

Carnival Cruise ship rescues 27 Cuban migrants on rickety wooden boat bound for the US: report

A Carnival Cruise ship veered off course to rescue 27 Cuban migrants who were stranded on a rickety wooden boat in the waters between Florida and the island nation, according to a report.

Carnival Paradise had just set sail from Tampa when it spotted the desperate US-bound migrants about 20 miles off the coast of Cuba,

The ship set a course to intercept their decrepit craft with the high-seas rescue taking place around 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Fox News reported.

The cruise ship was bound for Roatan, Honduras when it spotted the Cubans.

All 27 were taken aboard the ship, where they were fed and given medical checkups.

The Carnival crew notified the US Coast Guard and officials in Roatan.

In a statement, Carnival put the number of rescued migrants at 28 and said the ship was still scheduled to arrive in Honduras on Monday but did not provide additional details.

Earlier this month, the US Coast Guard intercepted a ramshackle home-made boat off the Key West shoreline — and shipped all 16 migrants on board back to Cuba, officials said.

The barely-sea-worthy craft — the bow of a small wooden boat with the rest made of foam — was spotted by an eagle-eyed good Samaritan and picked up by the Coast Guard cutter Charles David Jr. on April 7,  according to a press release .

The migrants were taken aboard the cutter and shipped back to Cuba, the Coast Guard said.

Cruise ship rescues migrants on small wooden boat signaling for help

The Cuban nationals were rescued from the wooden boat about 20 miles west of Cuba

A massive Carnival cruise ship turned around and rescued more than two dozen Cuban nationals after seeing them signaling from help from a small wooden boat.

The boat was adrift in bad condition with a makeshift sail when crew aboard the Carnival Paradise spotted it about 20 miles west of Cuba on Sunday, reported Fox News .

Cruise crew veered off their route from Tampa, Florida , to Roatan, Honduras, and pulled all 27 Cubans on board at roughly 2.30pm.

The Cubans were all examined by medics on board and provided with food.

The migrants were on a wooden boat with a makeshift sail

Cruise staff notified the US Coast Guar Sector Key West.

Despite the detour, the cruise reached its port at Mahogany Bay in Roatan on time, stated Carnival. The cruise is set to make another stop to Cozumel, Mexico , on Tuesday before returning to Tampa on Thursday.

It was not immediately known if the Cuban nationals stayed or are staying on board until the cruise reaches Florida or whether they disembarked at a port.

Earlier this month, the US Coast Guard spotted another makeshift boat near the Key West shoreline and took in 16 migrants who were repatriated back to Cuba.

‘The Coast Guard’s primary mission is to preserve human life at sea,’ stated Coast Guard Seventh District Lt Matthew Miller. ‘The maritime environment is inherently dangerous. The Coast Guard and our HSTF-SE partners are committed to preventing unsafe voyages at sea and enforcing US immigration laws and regulations.

‘Do not take to the sea.’

The Carnival Paradise incident was not the only out-of-the-ordinary event involving a cruise ship recently.

Last week, a pregnant passenger aboard the Disney Fantasy cruise ship was airlifted by a US Coast Guard helicopter when she began experiencing medical complications. Drone footage showed a Coast Guard crew member being lowered down to the front of the cruise and securing the woman to a rescue basket. She was lifted up and brought into the chopper safely.
